THE TRAMLINES PEOPLEʼS CHOICE ANNOUNCED M.V. MOBILITY Sheffield band Blue Lip Feel will open the main stage at this year’s Tramlines after beating off stiff competition from 6 other acts. The Tramlines People’s Choice Gig was held at the Leadmill on Saturday (19 May). Seven of the city’s favourite bands battled it out to be crowned the People’s Choice, winning a coveted spot as the opening act on the Main Stage at this year’s Tramlines. Blue Lip Feel said: “We feel really privileged to have come out on top. There was some tough competition there. A massive thanks to everyone involved and to everyone who watched
us play. See you again on the main stage!” Blue Lip Feel will be opening the Main Stage on Saturday 21st July. The lunchtime slot will see them sharing the stage with the likes of Roots Manuva, Ms Dynamite, Chew Lips and Clock Opera. Judge Kate Hewett said:” We’d like to thank everyone who took part in Saturday’s People’s Choice competition. “As is always the case in a city with such an amazing musical heritage, there are loads of really exciting upand-coming bands in Sheffield at the moment, meaning picking a winner wasn’t an easy task.
“That said, it was one we really enjoyed. We got to see some great music at the show, and are happy to be able to award Blue Lip Feel the prize of playing on this year’s Main Stage in front of up to 7,000 people. “Being able to show off your influences without ever becoming derivative is no mean feat, and we were all very taken with the band’s 1970s sound, as well as the ease with which they produced a really impressive performance.” All entry fees from the night will go straight back into the festival. Kate added: “It’s crucial to the future of Tramlines that we’re able to fundraise through
events like this one, so on behalf of the whole team, I’d also like to thank everyone that bought a ticket for the show and came along on the night. Your support

Copley’s Column
In the twelve years that I have been custodian of this column with an estimated weekly readership exceeding fifty thousand, I take great pride that in all that time I have only received two negative comments, ironically from the same person, who is apparently not happy that I mention Sheffield Wednesday or report on the home of first class entertainment, Dronfield, my home town where only the top acts are engaged. We are spoilt with the likes of John Reilly and the Acoustic Angels, Sunny Daye, Agnetha and Frida, Emma Rossi, Tom Collins, plus top bands, Russ Dennett (ex-Human League) and his band Junkyard Dog, Firecracker, The Score, and the Canyon all appearing regularly, and accordingly only the better acts get to play Dronfield. I do of course report fairly on both our football teams, making no secret that I am a Wednesdayite, but at the same time wanting both teams to achieve promotion, and of course rooting for the Blades on Saturday at Wembley. My solitary critic quite rightly praised the contribution from my dear friend Sunny Daye who incidentally filled in at my request. Perhaps I would be better employed saying a big thank you to the fifty odd thousand readers who do get some pleasure reading this column. My first visit of the week took me out of Dronfield to the newly re-furbished Butcher’s Arms on Marsh Lane, Eckington on Wednesday where Dave Mae, son of sixties star Glen Dale of Fortunes fame, presents his weekly open mic night. What a cracking evening this was with contributions from my pal Ray, country star Arizona Wes, Diana Edwards, and the legendary Glen Dale complementing some great songs from mine host Dave Mae, who has obviously inherited the talent of his dad. Thursday night once again took us out of Dronfield to celebrate the sixty fifth birthday of my old mate disc jockey and actor Johnny Howe at the Horns Inn, Holmesfield, where the entertainment was served up by the excellent vocal talent of Mark Kay, together with a great guest appearance from Ray David. On Friday night, we were happy to receive an invitation to the opening night prior to a major re-furbishment at the Royal Oak, Brampton,
Chesterfield, which was really busy, reminiscent of a typical New Years Eve, not surprising when one considers that this lovely pub is now in the capable hands of the lovely and tremendously popular radio presenter, Becky Measures and her partner Alex, a very charismatic guy. I was proud to represent this newspaper this week at the funeral of local showbusiness legend, Tony Whyte. I attended with a couple of legends of my own, Jackie Toaduff and Bobby Dennis, who was chauffeur for the day. Well known faces present included Paul Shane, Bobby Knutt and Lance Edwards, and it was nice to see Paul on Thursday morning at celebrity breakfast. Prior to the funeral, we had breakfast at the Elsecar Heritage Centre, where I discovered a magnificent sweet shop, and could not resist having a spend up. After the funeral, Bobby wanted to visit the grave of Ronnie Dukes and Ricky Lee, ( pictured ) who older readers will well remember as being superstars on the club circuit. They lived and were buried at Cawthorne, Barnsley, although both spent their last years living on Jersey. Surprisingly, neither lived to be fifty, Ronnie dying on stage at forty nine and his wife Audrey ( Ricky Lee) dying five years later aged forty eight. They were a really classy act and those lucky enough to have seen them will never forget Ronnie dancing on the tables and Ricky’s wonderful rendition of ‘ My Yiddisher Momma ‘ I also attended the funeral this week of my old pal Les Clayton. The huge attendance said it all about this quality man.

Andrew Lloyd Weber’s The Really Useful Group and AEG Live announce the first ever UK arena tour of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary rock classic Jesus Christ Superstar. Award-winning musical comedian Tim Minchin – also the co-writer of West End smash musical Matilda – is confirmed for the role of ‘Judas Iscariot’. Three million album selling pop icon and former Spice Girl Melanie C will take the only female lead as ‘Mary Magdalene’, and BBC Radio 1’s Breakfast Show host Chris Moyles will make his major stage debut as ‘King Herod’, in what is set to be one of the biggest and most impressive arena tours to hit the UK. The ITV primetime show ‘Superstar’ will give the UK public the chance to decide who will play the starring role of ‘Jesus’, with a panel of live show judges led by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Celebrating 40 years since it first opened in London’s West End, the Jesus Christ Superstar arena tour stops off in Sheffield at the Motorpoint Arena on Sunday 21st October. Tickets, priced £45, £55 & £65 (subject to booking fee) go on general sale Friday 18th May 9am in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 56 56 or online at www. motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk. Andrew Lloyd Webber said: “Jesus Christ Superstar began life as an album followed by a sell-out arena tour of the US. Our very first show was at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where we played to over 13,000 people. Tim and I have always wanted to take Superstar back to its roots and we are both delighted that it will finally play an arena tour in the UK in venues where many of the world’s great rock acts have gone before. We’re thrilled to have such great talent in the cast for the new show – they are all true ambassadors of UK entertainment. The re-mastered album sounds fantastic and we hope that fans both old and new will enjoy it.” Tim Minchin said: “As a huge fan of Jesus Christ Superstar, I’ve always thought it needed 3 key things: a big cast and band; loads of volume; and me playing Judas. I’ve been in two small productions of the show, and understudied the big man both times. I am really bloody excited about this.” Melanie C said: “I have been lucky enough to perform at arenas across the globe and to star in London’s West End but taking on the role of Mary Magdalene in the incredible Jesus Christ Superstar has to be one my most exciting challenges to date. I can’t wait to take the show to some of my favourite venues in the UK with such a talented and formidable cast including Tim and Chris.” Chris Moyles said: “To receive a phonecall from Andrew is very cool, but then when he asks you to be in his musical that’s pretty amazing and there is only one thing to respond with... And that is yes! Absolutely! My mum’s gonna be well excited!” The Jesus Christ Superstar arena tour is a coproduction between AEG Live, and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Really Useful Group. ‘Superstar’ is an ITV Studios Production for ITV1. Tickets for the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield show on Sunday 21st October, priced £45 & £65 (subject to booking fee), go on general sale Friday 18th May 9am. To book call 0114 256 56 56, visit www. motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk or in person at the venue.

An old Italian man lived alone in the country. He wanted to dig his tomato garden but it was very hard work as the ground was hard. His only son, Vincenzo, who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament. Dear Vincenzo, I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won’t be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I am getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. If you were here, my troubles would be over. I know you would dig the garden for me. Love, Papa A few days later he received a letter from his son. Dear Papa, I’d do for you Papa, except dig up that garden. That’s where I buried the bodies. Love, Vinnie At 4 am the next morning, FBI and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and left. The same day the old man received another letter from his son. Dear Papa, Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That’s the best I could do under the circumstances.

or you may be lead into situations. Walk away don’t get involved. Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis
There are twelve Astrology signs. They influence everything from world events to the day to day situations we face in our normal lives. Your birth sign is shared by one twelfth of the world’s population and each one influences millions of people. Understandably therefore, people ask, if so many share the same zodiac sign, how can a horoscope message apply to them all? The answer is that there are other influences alongside the birth sign, like rising stars, your planet, and whatever planet is in your zodiac sign when you were born, so not everyone is influenced at the same time with the same energies. See what your astrology number says about you and what lesson you have to learn.
6. Virgo the Virgin: Number 6 influences love, passion and caring.Do not suffer with self pity, and sometimes resentment. Open your heart to love. 7. Libra the Scales: A powerful number which influences emotions, productivity, and intution. Open up your heart and find your own truth in the situation.Weighing the problem up will not solve it. 8. Scorpio the Scorpion: This sign influences karma, power, and passion. Do not fall into the trap of verbal abuse and vanity. You have to find your own inner strength. You can overcome things by being yourself. 9. Sagittarius the Archer: The characteristics of this sign are influences over leadership, humour, and compassion. Sagittarians often have unrealistic expectations of others. They must learn to see life as it is.
1. Aries the Ram: this number highlights inspiration, leadership and new direction, with the relentlessness of a spiritual warrior. A major lesson to be learnt to take responsibility for yourself and feel more passionate about your life. 10. Capricorn the Goat: The number ten influences wisdom, knowledge and ambition. You must avoid a loss of purpose and a weak will 2. Taurus the Bull: Sharing, a need to relate and at times arrogance can creep in.You have to others through feelings, and emotions are all important factors. The lesson to be learnt here is to work on your spiritual development, and find your spiritual pathway. to be more receptive and give more to others. 3. Gemini the Twins: This influences joy and adaptability. Further develop your people skills relating to other people in all kinds of social situations. Sometimes the twins have no direction in life so you need to be finding your priorities and acting upon them. 4. Cancer the Crab: This number highlights structure and discipline, boundaries and loyalty. The message is to take responsibility for yourself, and to feel more passionate about your life. 5. Leo the Lion: The key issues are movement, self expression and magnetism. The lesson to be learned is not to be too restrictive and insistent,
11. Aquarius the Water Bearer: This highlights a need to relate to others through feelings and emotions. The lesson to be learnt is to be more receptive and perhaps give more away. You have excellent knowledge, share it ! 12. Pisces the Fish: The Number 12 influences laughter, joy, activity and creativity.Learn to develop your skills to relate to more people in different kinds of situations. This may enhance your confidence in life. OLDER, WISER, WARMER IS A WINNER!
Sarah Hardy, Events and Publicity Coordinator, Heeley City Farm Shelly Davis and her volunteers are celebrating after winning a prestigious award at the Yorkshire Post Environment Awards recently. Shelly, who coordinates the Older, Wiser, Warmer project from the South Yorkshire Energy Centre (SYEC) at Heeley City Farm, was all smiles as she collected the award at the ceremony held at The Queens Hotel in Leeds on the 10th May. Nominated in the Community Awards section, the panel were impressed by Shelly’s hard work in ensuring that older members of several Sheffield communities were helped to insulate their homes, reduce their energy bills and keep warm through the colder months of the year. ‘I’m collecting this award on behalf of all my volunteers too’, said Shelly ‘They are the real stars of the project, volunteering to be trained as Energy Champions and then going on to promote our holistic approach to keeping warm and well across Sheffield.’ The project has been possible thanks to funding from Comic Relief and is running for at least another 18 months. Shelly is moving in to the Heeley and Gleadless Valley neighbourhoods next so keep a look out for upcoming volunteer training sessions and events for the next phase of Older, Wiser, and Warmer. EVERYTHINGʼS COMING UP ROSES!
Roses are so much at the heart of gardening in this country that it is a delight to write about them. The challenge is that with so many cultivars to choose from and a seemingly never-ending list of uses for various parts of the plant, it is difficult to know where to start! The rose is never very far from anyone’s lips with so many songs, poetry, films and artists using the rose as their muse. Don’t underestimate the importance of the rose in history, mythology, religion and homeopathic medicine. In Victorian times, roses were used to convey messages that could not be spoken. For example, red roses – ‘I Love You’, white roses – ‘You are Heavenly’, yellow roses – ‘I am not worthy of your love’ or pink roses – ‘Please Believe Me’… (Not sure how happy I’ll be the next time my husband buys me pink roses!) So if you would like to send a message to a loved one, you could consider this quaint way of expressing yourself – just remember though, if the recipient has no idea about the language of flowers, your heartfelt expressions of love could be falling on deaf ears! Different countries around the world hold festivals in honour of the rose. In Morocco, the Valley of the Roses festival takes place in the Dades Valley. Visitors travel miles to attend the festivities and a Rose Queen is elected to reign over the crop. Hundreds of thousands of the flowers are harvested to be turned into exquisite, scented oil. Tons of rose petals are used to produce just a few litres of rose oil. Just imagine, the streets covered in pink petals and a stream of carnival floats making their way through town carrying would-be Miss Roses – what a fantastic spectacle! In this country this essential oil is as popular as ever, its therapeutic qualities and unmistakable perfume make it an all-round winner. The list of homeopathic uses is long and includes asthma, depression, hangovers, headaches,
insomnia, pregnancy and skin care. On top of the numerous health benefits, we can also add to the list the rose hip, the fruit of the rose. Actually, many of the domestic cultivars do not produce hips. However, rose hips of some species, in particular the Dog Rose (Rosa canina) and Rugosa Rose (Rosa rugosa), are very rich in vitamin C, among the richest sources of any plant. The hips are a good source of food for birds and other wildlife. Human uses for rose hips include rose hip tea, rose hip syrup and rose hip jam. In the garden there is a rose for every situation (climber, rambler, dwarf, shrub, ground cover etc) and within those groups so many colours and flower forms from which to choose. A handful of our favourites: Rosa ‘Rambling Rector’ - a rampant rambler, bearing beautiful, fragrant, creamy-white flowers in summer - perfect for disguising unattractive garden features. Rosa glauca is a vigorous species rose that will thrive in a container on the patio. Rosa Gertrude Jekyll, a classic ‘English’ rose, was recently voted Britain’s favourite rose and Floribundas are roses that offer absolutely masses of colour through the summer. Whatever your wish, speak to your retailer and they will advise. Sourcing the right rose can be a voyage of discovery akin to a knight’s quest. Who knows where yours will take you?

National Dementia Awareness Week (20-26 May) aims to raise awareness and understanding of this condition, which affects as many as 800,000 people in the UK. But PDSA is alerting owners that pets too can suffer from a very similar condition as they become older. Dementia is an ‘umbrella’ term that is used to describe a set of symptoms that are caused by a gradual loss of brain function. Symptoms are varied but can include memory loss, confusion and poor attention, and onset is generally associated with old age. Research* suggests that as many as half of all cats over the age of 15 are affected by Feline Cognitive Dysfunction (commonly known as Feline Dementia), and dogs can be similarly affected as they age. Spotting this disease in pets can be more difficult than with humans, so PDSA has put together a list of signs to look out for that could indicate your pet is affected. Signs can include: · Confusion or disorientation · Loss of toilet training · Change of sleeping patterns · Change in social interaction and relationships · Loss of memory · Changes in activity · Changes in vocalisations · Change to appetite PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley, says: “These signs can indicate a dementia-like condition in pets, but a number of them can also be caused by other diseases, so it’s important to visit your vet as soon as possible for an accurate diagnosis. Early detection is important, as this can often result in more successful treatment or management of many conditions, so regular check ups for elderly pets are key.” If a pet is diagnosed with cognitive dysfunction, then your vet may prescribe medication, or recommend ways of managing the condition, which can help pets have an improved quality of life for some time after the original onset of illness. Owners can also take steps to help pets suffering with this condition: · Avoid moving things in the house – this includes their food / water bowls, beds (and litter trays for cats) as well as other furniture or items around the house. · Increase other environmental clues – for instance familiar smells in certain rooms, or keeping the radio on in a particular room can help navigation. · Encourage interaction – play games you know they enjoy, but keep things gentle. · Re-training – if your pet’s memory allows, use rewardbased training to help them re-learn lost behaviours, such as toilet training and basic commands.

The exact causes of cognitive dysfunction aren’t proven, but veterinary specialists suggest that a good diet, regular mental stimulation (e.g. exercising and playing outdoors) and companionship (for social animals like dogs) can all help to reduce the risks of animals developing the disease. Townsend catches Casey giving a Sasha a lift illegally on the Angelo’s delivery bike and reports him. Fri: Romeo injures his knee but manages to conceal his pain during a meeting with a sponsor. Sid tells Romeo his injury is serious – he will be out of action for months. Colleen reveals that she has given Lance all her money in the hope of moving in with him. Neighbours Mon: Summer reluctantly attends Andrew’s gig and tries to push through the awkwardness of their new friendship. Susan grows increasingly concerned about a possible MS relapse. Tash chooses to escape for a night of carefree dancing. Tues: When Vanessa learns of Sonya’s struggles to conceive, she reminds her to see the upside of not being pregnant. Andrew is still struggling to let Summer go. Struggling Sonya resolves to make the best of things and begins to embrace her baby-free life. Wed: Lucas continues to reach out tentatively to Vanessa. Callum confronts Rani about her odd behaviour. Sonya surprises Toadie with a night on the town. They propose a holiday to Europe, committing to life without a baby. Thurs: Ajay is not happy to find Callum and Rani alone together. Sophie finds she now has nobody to hang out with. Kyle is surprised when his grandmother Sheila arrives on his doorstep. When Lou proves popular with the ladies at a seniors’ dance class, a plan begins to take shape. Fri: Chris claims that Aidan is just Tash’s friend. Despite Sheila’s disapproval, Kyle and Jade remain committed to each other. Determined to find a rich widow to solve his money woes, Lou meets Vera and works hard to woo her.

CARCROFT CLUB LAUNCH MAJOR CHILDRENʼS CHARITY INITIATIVE Members of Carcroft Club in Doncaster are rallying round to raise money for Children With Cancer, with a view to purchasing a caravan on the coast for young cancer sufferers and their families. This is memory of local boy Reece Perry, who lost his brave battle against cancer. Friday June 1st sees the first of many planned events, with a Gala Concert Evening featuring Cameleonz, NOW and Simon Ashley. Tickets are only £3.00 and all proceeds will go to the fund. The demands of caring for a sick child are such that many families are forced to give up work for some time, meaning that luxuries such as family holidays cannot be considered. By purchasing and funding a caravan on a family-friendly park, the charity will be able
to offer families the chance of some respite, spending quality time together in a relaxed environment. Readers of the Mercury will be aware that a number of caravan parks advertise with us on a regular basis. We are delighted to report that we have had contact from some of the parks
who have heard of this appeal, and have offered their help to the club by way of significant savings on the cost of owning and running a caravan. This is a very ambitious and extremely worthwhile cause, and we hope that all our readers will help by turning up and supporting the events!
CHAMPION BRASS BAND HOST FINALE Sunday 27th May sees the finale of the 2012 season of the City of Sheffield Band Club at Niagara Sports & Social Club in Hillsborough Sheffield. The Fountain Precinct Lower Ground Floor Sheffield S1 2GZ 0114 270 6760
the band club hosts, and the current 1st Section Yorkshire Champions, the Unite the Union Brass Band (formerly the City of Sheffield Band). Radio Nightingale is a registered charity and each week we hold at least one collection to raise funds for the station. This is in the foyer of the Rotherham General Hospital on Monday evenings between 6.00pm and 8.30pm. The visitors to the hospital are extremely generous and we’re really pleased with the contribution this makes towards our ongoing running costs. However it is only a part of the money we need to deliver the station so we are looking to expand into a Thursday evening but don’t have enough volunteers for this session. If you could offer any time, preferably on a regular basis (that could be just one evening per month), to help Radio Nightingale in these collections it would be very much appreciated. Contact us on 01709 304244 to discuss how your availability could contribute to our fundraising. We hold other collections at various venues around Rotherham along with these regular sessions. If you would like to help us at these events please get in touch and then we’ll contact you as and when events are organised. If you don’t have any time to offer but want to support us, please visit our website where you can find out more about our lottery, webshop and search engine which raise money for Radio Nightingale. Or if you would like to be involved in the station in activities other than collecting, on our website you’ll also find an application pack which gives more information about the types of work we need volunteers to help with. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. For more information about the station visit www.radionightingale.org.uk
WORD
MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
Well it’s been a good few weeks now and the mystery thickens, but you’ve got more chance than ever now of being able to solve it and WIN a jackpot pile of prizes. Our latest ‘bleeped out’ word is from one of our own singing superstars Tony Christie. During an interview with us he talks about doing a show for the Apple Store down in London, doesn’t know what that show is, but says it’s a sort of a…… It isn’t a Gig, Shindig, Promotion, Exhibition, Cabaret, Showcase or Singalong amongst what we’ve had guessed up to now. The telephone lines are open for you to guess each weekday morning with me at 8.10 and then again at 9.30am, and you can listen to the clip of Tony speaking by logging on to my section on our website at magicam.co.uk/ breakfast right now. You will also see the full list of wrong answers and find out exactly what you will win by getting it right as well. One contestant each time has the chance to win, and it could be you walking away with a pile of goodies as long as your arm in the morning. Remember that the longer you listen, the more hints you will get. I look forward to your company every single weekday from 6.00 -10.00am
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CLUB HISTORIANS PART ONE CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
Club Historians has a long way to go to catch up with the CIU - 146 years to be precise, but this week we are happy, and proud, to celebrate our 4th birthday. As I usually spread out my own birthday across a couple of weeks, I will do so with Club Historians own special day. This unique website, dedicated to documenting the history and development of clubs and their users over the ages has very quickly become a well-used and highly respected global resource. The total number of ‘hits’, or visits, has now reached 121,600 as I write and is rising all the time. Not bad at all for an amateur site that is run by two people in their spare time from home on a not-for-profit basis! The appeal of the site has gone beyond our own national borders with regular visitors from the States and Australia dropping in to have a look and check up on something. This week someone in Hanoi, Vietnam has been looking at our write up of the Innisfree Club in Newcastle – perhaps an expat from the North East now living in the Far East? Another person in Modesto, California has been researching the former Dial House Club in Sheffield. Gone but clearly not forgotten, the Dial House is often the destination of site visitors. We’ve had visits this week from people in Belgium and Uttar Pradesh, India-again maybe an expat wanting to keep in touch with their club back home as do some soldiers in Afghanistan. Each week brings new visitors and many returners, all wanting to see what is new on the site. The appeal goes far beyond club users with many students regularly clicking on seeking help with material for essays and dissertations, as well as academics writing scholarly papers. Many media professionals enjoy the site and use it when writing about clubs for newspaper features, magazines or when planning TV or radio programmes. I never dreamt this would happen when I very tentatively embarked on this venture four years ago with webmaster Geoff Booker. So how did Club Historians come into existence and whose idea was it? Like most good things in life, by chance and by a fortuitous meeting of minds. We never imagined back then that the site would take on a life of its own and become so useful and valued by so many people. More next week! And a reminder – Saturday, Eurovision and, Engelbert. Be there or be square!

THE CRIBS 16/05/12 THEATRE ROYAL
live REVIEW
Words by Katy Evans
They’re back…hail the almighty musical force that is the Jarmans, NME’s ‘biggest cult band in the UK’ have made a stomping return with an explosive new album and a string of show appearances across the country. Branded as ‘the most exciting show we’ve ever played’ by one third of the brotherhood Ryan Jarman, The Cribs seized the ornately beautiful Theatre Royal in Wakefield and thrust it into an out-take scene from an alternative variety performance. Minus the Queen…but you get out drift. The very epicentre for all that carries strength and versatility within regional music scenes, The Cribs undoubtedly remain one of the North’s finest exports. Whipping up their hometown on 16th May, the trio return after a couple of restful years to both write and record their UK#5 studio album ‘In The Belly Of A Braisen Bull,’ an almighty salute back to their originally raw and organic thrashy rock roots. Opening the set with ‘Come On, Be A No One’ to a sold out venue of hardcore followers, driving melodies and shattering bass lines swept through the senses of the Northern crowd with eye watering effect. Forget naff clichés, half-hearted puns or giving selfish performances, The Cribs are all about delivering a set specifically designed around their hugely uptempo belters, something which they demonstrated with A* ability on the night. With a set a culmination of songs cherry picked out of the groups five studio albums since their formation onto the UK indie rock circuit in 2004, unlike The Arctic Monkeys who have delved into a whole new avenue of compositions since their 2007 smash ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not,’ The Cribs seem only to have reinstated a chunk of their endearing naïve charm back into their new work. ‘Another Number,’ a melancholy, breezy ballad was not only played at the group’s debut gig back in ’03, but also on this very special night, arguably one of the most poignant tour date of The Cribs career…the brothers are returning home to a rock stars welcome. And hell do they deserve it. Other first rate classics ‘Men’s Needs,’ ‘Cheat On Me’ and ‘Hey Scenester’ all littered the two hour long stage show which unlike many sets which pull over the ninety minute mark, seemed only to take us on a turbo charged race through the last eight years of The Cribs career. With clearly everyone there to support such a powerful Wakefield force, aside from a first rate performance, the crowds themselves kept up the pace with all who witnessed on their feet throughout…but with the best suppliers of bolsteringly gritty chorus lines and shattering rhythmic sections, its more than easy to see why. Check out www.theatreroyalwakefield.co.uk for all the latest performances at the beautiful venue in the heart of the center.

Words by Katy Evans
Pioneering the reintroduction of British folk and nu wave genres, Lucy Rose blossoms from a uniquely alternative take on soft indie compositions. A voice which could easily draw a tear to the eye of even the most stoniest of hearts, the singer songwriter is to grace Sheffield’s Plug on 5th June. Having been named ‘absolutely outstanding’ by BBC Radio 1’s Edith Bowman along with ‘one of the countries promising new voices’ by The Sunday Times Culture Magazine, Lucy Rose lays her nest in Warwickshire however has an undoubtable worldwide stretch. Reminiscent to that of Florence Welsh and Beth Consentino, lead vocalist of shoe gazy surfer rock group Best Coast, Lucy Rose is set to seize British indie lovers by force with the release of the solo artist’s debut album, an endearing soundtrack to what could be a hugely successful future for the twenty three year old star. Having been recently signed to Columbia Records with a roster of acts to include Pink Floyd, Adele and Mariah Carey, Lucy has already touched national recognition with her work being played on E4 hit Skins, in turn making her an internet sensation. Running in the same circuit of musical inspirations as Noah and The Whale and Bombay Bicycle Club, Lucy contributed guest vocals to two of the latters studio albums ‘Flaws’ and ‘A Different Kind Of Fix,’ along with touring with ‘Five Years Time’ duo in the early sector of this year. Undertaking a full UK tour of some of Britain’s most exciting venues, Lucy has main support by Nathan Holme, a performer famed for his unique take on abstract electronica. One not to be missed we guarantee you! Racking up more than 800,000 views on her youtube music video ‘Middle Of The Bed,’ Lucy’s impressive online fan base has rewarded the star with a combined viewing total of over one and a half million hits. Her fragile melodies in tracks ‘Middle Of The Bed’ and ‘Red Face’ all equate to a powerful imagine of which Lucy Rose portrays of first rate alternative, trend setting movements which will no doubt capture the hearts and imaginations of all who play witness. Lucy Rose is performing at Sheffield’s Plug on 5th June 2012. See www.the-plug.com for ticket info and details for the night. £8 advance. 14+. 0114 2762676

PREVIEW
round-up by stuart renton
I’m going to talk about Eurovision this week, and as it’s my column and I like to get it in as often as possible, I’m going to compare it to having sex with a really gorgeous but depressingly unimaginative person. This commentary therefore comes in two parts: The first is the build-up, in which you spend every waking moment obsessing over and imagining from every possible angle, just how perfect the whole “dirty love-match” is going to be. The second part (next week) is the meat of the review, which is basically what a let-down the whole “sexperience” was. That’s right, the nookie you spent a year lusting after was nothing more than a huge disappointment. Aside from a vaguely gripping bit right at the end, you had to do most of the hard work yourself and could have achieved the same level of “excitement” in the privacy of your bedroom with a worn out Sandie Shaw poster! And it’s exactly the same with Eurovision (I’m reasonably certain that I was talking about Eurovision all along – although I’ll admit it might have got a bit blurry somewhere in the middle of that last paragraph). It’s all looking a bit bleak: we’re not going to win; I mean: the song – and singer – choice this year is just baffling: why the hell choose Engelbert Humperdink? Can anyone see the sense (other than they’ve tried every other z-list “celebrity” willing to debase themselves on the show, so why not try something so utterly ludicrous that it might just win). My hired assassins failed to take out Jedward so they’re representing Ireland once again (those boys are clearly way too stupid to realise that it’s a onetime event and everyone at Eurovision was too polite to tell them to go home) so they’re back with another insipid track that’s thankfully only about ninety seconds long (which is approximately eighty nine seconds longer than I would have liked it to be). If singers whose names were a mouthful and our “winning” track record wasn’t enough, we’ve absolutely bugger all chance of winning this year as we’re in the death slot. No one likes to come first (unless you’re a bit of hound in the bedroom), but the news that Humperdink is opening the show was the final nail in the coffin. This is a disaster, but as no one votes for us in Europe anyway, means we’ve less than no chance of winning. In summary, the whole thing’s a bit of a farce, but we’ll all watch anyway. We’ll just deny it to our friends and vehemently slag it off when anyone asks us about it: “I’m not watching that Eurovision crap!” you’ll declare loudly at the water cooler at work, while slipping surreptitiously back to your desk to print off the score cards from the BBC website (we’ve all done it). I’ll be back next week to lament our failure, but don’t worry, it’s the Jubilee soon so we can all revel in the stream of unbridled patriotism spewing forth from the nation. Or just be grateful for another free bank holiday!

angler’s corner
PARKLANDS POND
DONCASTER
by Clint Walker
I’ve been chastised this week by the ‘Carp Police’ on a recognised internet forum for daring to disagree with another opinion.....I’m sure you have all browsed similar areas and found that one or two users occasionally have forthright positions which, in their mind, are not subject to challenge, and if you do, then you are instantly denounced??? Well it happened when I tried to put an alternative viewpoint in a discussion about the rise of foreign imports being introduced into a growing number of fisheries. The subject of wrong ‘uns appears to be fairly emotive amongst those who consider themselves ‘Old School’ (a badge I consider ill worn by many who have only a couple of years of experience to pronounce upon, or may wear it somewhat hypocritically) or fully paid up members of the ‘Carp Police’ whose sole aim is to decree how others should fish for ‘their’ carp; well, I’m sorry, but the import of large carp from abroad is a simple matter of supply and demand if you ask me.... I fully appreciate that many carpers would prefer to sit by an estate lake and catch wonderful dark backed scaley creatures with a lineage of many years, but as I see it, the fact is that many other anglers would just like to catch a big fish and fishery owners have to stock these large fish to cater for what their customers want or else miss out. I’m dead against the import of illegal fish with the potential to decimate venues with diseases unknown, but the customer demands big fish and those with limited time and the financial resources to travel and seek out these fish, and want them now! Driven by the increased number of ‘sponsored’ anglers (who, to be fair, are under considerable pressure to be pictured with big fish) and companies represented each week in almost every angling publication, the reader sees a huge carp and wants the chance to put it in his net. Day ticket and many club venues provide this option, but only if they go and buy the fish; to breed from young costs an awful lot of money, and more importantly, time.....and we all know that time is money. I truly believe the era of large English fish may soon be overtaken by venues which stock imported carp; it does sadden me, but fishing continues to grow, and that growth will only be provided by investment in bigger and better fisheries which allow access to leviathans. That will come from happy customers and nowhere else.... So who is right? Me or the ‘Carp Police’? In truth, I’m not really bothered as I respect the opinion and choices of every other angler on the bank and would never seek to change them, but it appals me that some self appointed protector of the species ‘anglers’ see fit to slander something with which they don’t agree, especially if they will not put their name to it... I hope you enjoy your angling and don’t fall foul of the ‘Carp Police’!

Goodwood: 2.15 32Red Casino Handicap, Class 2, 3yo, 0-100, 1m 1f 192yds: Mr Spiggott gets the call here ahead of Misdemeanour, Sheikhzayedroad, Opinion and Kinloch Castle. 2.45 32Red Festival Stakes, Listed, Class 1, 4yo+, 1m 1f 192yds: I have been keeping an eye on SOS Brillante who looks to running ahead of his rating this year and am prepared to give him another shot at getting his head in front as he has performed so very well lately. There are plenty of dangers however headed by: Retrieve; Cai Shen; Beaten Up; Tinshu; Obligada; Opera Gal; Myplacelater and Halfsin. 3.20 32Red.com Handicap, Class 2, 4yo+, 0-105, 1m 4f: Mark Johnston’s Eternal Heart is the selection after his good showing the Chester Cup behind Ile de Re. He may have most to fear from Hanoverian Baron and High Jinx although Cosimo de Medici may also prove troublesome if fit and ready for this. Of the others Caravan Rolls On, Late Telegraph and Royal Peculiar could figure prominently.

Haydock: 2.00 Betfred Mobile Sports Handicap, Class 3, 3yo, 0-90, 1m 3f 200yds: Tom Tate’s Beyond Conceit is a fairly confident choice to open his seasonal account here. He looks to have most to fear from Sir Graham Wade, Gabriel the Hero, Ballyheique and Last Shadow, but should be able to prevail. Handicap, Class 2, 3yo, 2.30 Betfred Silver Bowl Handicap 1m: In a very tight handicap a narrow vote goes to the hat-trick seeking course and distance winner Trail Blaze. However there are numerous horses with what look to me to be good chances, most notably: Fire Ship; Dance the Rain; Basseterre; Apostle; Chapter Seven; Frog Hollow; Johnno; and Arnold Lane. 3.00 Betfred.com Temple Stakes, Group 2, 5f: I was almost tempted to go for Borderlescott again as he seemed to be getting ready to strike soon judged on his last appearance. However, I think I prefer the chances of Tangerine Trees who gets the nod ahead of Monsieur Joe, Masamah, Confessional, Swiss Dream and Borderlescott. Two others that could be dangerous if putting their best foot forward are Stepper Point and Prohibit.

SATURDAY 25th JUNE NEWARK SHOWGROUND COMPLIMENTARY TICKET Admits One to ANY Tackle Show
York: 3.10 Stowe Family Lawyers LLP Grand Cup, Listed, Class 1, 4yo+, 1m 6f: Mark Johnston’s Gulf of Naples earns the vote, again following a really good run in the Chester Cup. Dawn Twister, Joshua Tree and Zuider Zee may chase him home. 3.45 Whixley Handicap, Class 2, 3yo+, 0-105, 5f; I reckon that Lexi’s Hero can lift this prize. Johannes, Celerina and Tax Free can give him most to think about. The Curragh: Saturday: 3.15 Abu Dhabi Irish 2000 Guineas, Group 1, 3yo Colts and Fillies, 1m: In a race that looks fairly tough to call the Aidan O’Brien stable has almost half the entries (as usual) and the two of his that I like best are Crusade and Reply. However, Jim Bolger’s Parish Hall looks to be a worthy favourite to me and at the current 6/1 is at a backable price. John Oxx is represented by Takar who has won his last two races and looks like an unexposed improver, a remark that could also apply to Dermot Weld’s Speaking of Which. Trumpet Major ran well to finish fourth in our 2000 Guineas and represents the strong Richard Hannon team which often does well on its forays abroad. However he was beaten that day by Camelot, French Fifteen and Hermival, who re-opposes here. It is possible however that Trumpet Major did too much in that race as he weakened in the last 100yds or so and he may be a different proposition here if ridden a touch more conservatively. Nevertheless Hermival still commands plenty of respect. Having mulled the race over for quite some time I am siding with Parish Hall but I am also going to have a small each way bet on David Wachman’s colt Alkazim who is too big a price at 50/1 in my view. Sunday: 3.10 Tattersall’s Gold Cup, Group 1, 4yo+, 1m 2f 110yds: After his victory in the Dubai World Cup Godolphin’s Monterosso looks to have a very good chance. However, back on turf I am siding with Planteur to turn the form around with him. I reckon that So You Think will not be too far way either and he rates a big danger, along with Treasure Beach, Poet and Famous Name. This latter-named has never won away from Ireland so back on home soil has to have a decent shout. Songcraft may also go well, as may Jessica Harrington’s Bible Belt who may be a long price to boot. 4.15 Etihad Airways Irish 1000 Guineas, Group 1, 3yo Fillies, 1m: If Homecoming Queen goes for the double I can see no reason why those that finished behind her at Newmarket should be able to get past her here. I have a shortlist that comprises: Homecoming Queen; FireLily; Ishvana; Yellow Rosebud; Wading; Remember Alexander; Devotion; Gray Pearl; Princess Highway; and Betterbetterbetter. If Homecoming Queen runs she is the selection but if not I am going to take a chance on Betterbetterbetter who could go off at a decent price. Selection Summary, Saturday: Haydock: 2.00 Beyond Conceit 2.30 Trail Blaze 3.00 Tangerine Trees Goodwood: 2.15 Mr Spiggott 2.45 SOS Brillante 3.20 Eternal Heart York: 3.10 Gulf of Naples 3.45 Lexi’s Hero The Curragh; 3.15 Parish Hall The Curragh, Sunday: 3.10 Planteur 4.15 Betterbetterbetter Good Luck!

NEW SHIRT AVAILABLE FOR WEMBLEY BOUND FANS BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Sheffield United fans can wear next season’s new-look replica home shirts at Wembley. They will feature the Westfield Health branding following the announcement from the organisation that it has extended its sponsorship deal with both Sheffield football clubs. A limited number of shirts will go on sale for the first time at 8am tomorrow (Tuesday) at the club’s Superstore. Fans can also order online. Season ticket holders will receive a 10 per cent discount. Blades Managing Director Dave McCarthy said: “This is another opportunity for United fans to make Wembley red and white. We received a great reaction from fans when the players wore the shirts for the final home league game of the season against Stevenage and we thought our supporters would appreciate the opportunity of wearing the new strip at Wembley” Supporters unable to get down to the Superstore can buy online at www.sufcdirect.co.uk with shirts ordered before Thursday being delivered by the play-off final. Fans will only get the shirt before Wembley if they select next day delivery, although the club will send normal delivery is selected but cannot guarantee delivery before Wembley. Superstore manager Lisa Crossland said: “We have pulled out all the stops to get the kit available in time for Wembley. All adult and children shirts, shorts and socks sizes will be available.” Westfield Health - one of the UK’s leading not for profit health insurance providers - will feature on the front of Sheffield United’s shirt when they wear their home strip and on Sheffield Wednesday’s shirt when they play in their away strip.
OWLS & BLADES CONTINUE WITH WESTFIELD BLADES/OWLS NEWS www.sufc.co.uk - www.swfc.co.uk
Westfield Health is to extend its sponsorship deal with both Sheffield Wednesday and city rivals United. The deal will mean Westfield Health - one of the UK’s leading not for profit health insurance providers - appearing on the front of the Owls’ away shirt, whilst also on the Blades’ home strip. Westfield Chief Executive Jill Davies said: “We are delighted to continue with our support for both Sheffield clubs. It is a winning association for Westfield. “Our success owes a huge amount to our Sheffield roots. A large number of our policyholders are from Sheffield and the surrounding region, so working with the clubs provides a fantastic opportunity to showcase to a significant proportion of our policyholders that we understand what’s important to them, while also giving us the opportunity to inform about Westfield.
OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
SWFC Player of the Year Jose Semedo believes the Owls will head into the new Championship campaign full of confidence after a hugely successful 2011-12. For Semedo, the possibilities are endless as to what Sheffield Wednesday can now go on to achieve following promotion to the second tier. The Portuguese ace said: “What we have achieved since the beginning of this season has given us a very good platform. “New players will come to the club to strengthen what we have here and we will do the best we can in the Championship. “We might get to the Premier League. Who knows? I hope so. Anything is possible.” Of course Wednesday’s promotion was confirmed on the final day of the season in front of over 38,000 supporters at Hillsborough and Semedo has said it is a campaign he will never forget. “It’s been amazing for us” he said. “We had our ups and downs. “The turning point for me was when it started to look as if we might not get second spot yet the fans kept coming to support us home and away. “We thought ‘they are coming because they believe; if they believe, so should we.’ We kept going. We have a big responsibility to the fans. “They deserved promotion more than anyone else.”
“The Owls and the Blades have enjoyed terrific seasons. Under Milan Mandaric’s guidance, Wednesday have fulfilled their aim of returning to the Championship and United are hoping to follow suit at Wembley at the weekend. “Westfield has long and historic partnerships with both clubs and we look forward to continued success on and off the pitch over the coming season.” Sheffield Wednesday chairman Mandaric said: “Sheffield Wednesday and Westfield Health were proud partners in League 1 and both parties are now looking forward to more of the same next season. “We have achieved our aim of promotion and I am delighted that the Owls will help enhance the brand and support of Westfield Health as key club sponsors in the Championship.” Sheffield United chairman Kevin McCabe added: “We’ve just celebrated the fact that Westfield has been sponsoring the Blades in different ways for more than 50 years, so we are delighted to move into a new era with the support, once again, of one of the biggest names in health insurance. “We are proud to carry the Westfield name on our shirts and we hope we can get the new era of sponsorship off to a winning start at Wembley.”
BLADES FANS GET FORMER SKIPPER RETURNS TO MILLERS READY FOR WEMBLEY MILLERS NEWS www.themillers.co.uk
Rotherham United have made former skipper Ian Sharps their third signing of the close season, subject to completion of a full medical. The defender left the Millers in 2010 following the play-off final defeat to Dagenham and Redbridge but after two-years and a promotion with Shrewsbury Town, he has returned to the club signing a two-year deal at Mangham House this morning. “It has taken a long time to get Ian here,” manager Steve Evans told Millers Player. “He has had a fantastic two years at Shrewsbury, he is someone we admire and respect and I am looking forward to seeing him in action.” A fans favourite from his first spell with the club, Sharps made 185 appearances for the Millers between 2006-2010, receiving the club Player of the Year award in 2009. Vastly experienced at League Two level, Sharps has been named in the League Two Team of the Year for the past three seasons, playing 43 league games as the Shrews were promoted in second place last season.
