£1.3M APPEAL LAUNCHED FOR WESTON PARK HOSPITAL M.V. MOBILITY A £1.3m appeal was launched today (Monday May 28th) to raise funds for vital new facilities at Weston Park Hospital, which will offer cancer patients across the region access to the very latest treatments. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s (WPHCC’s) ‘Do Your Bit’ campaign is raising money to create a new state-of-the-art research and treatment facility at the Sheffield hospital, which serves patients from all across South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire, North Derbyshire and parts of North Lincolnshire. Two leading organisations have
already backed the appeal, with both Westfield Health and Yorkshire Cancer Research pledging substantial donations. The campaign is to fund a major refurbishment of the first floor of the hospital to create a new Cancer Research and Treatment Suite, offering access to the most up-to-date anti-cancer treatments and therapies, initially as part of a research programme, and subsequently as NHS treatment. The new suite, bringing together two existing chemotherapy treatment facilities, will include a new and expanded clinical trials area, enabling the hospital to

increase the number of clinical trials it offers, currently standing at 100 trials a year. Work will focus on early stage trials for breast, lung, kidney, prostate and skin (melanoma) cancers. In future years, trials for other cancers could be offered. In addition the Suite will allow expansion of the hospital’s Daycase Service Unit which treats approximately 50 patients a day with anti-cancer treatments. Rachel Thorpe, director of WPHCC, said: “We are asking people across the region to help us with this campaign. With one in three people being diagnosed with cancer at some point in their
lives, most people know someone who has been affected by cancer. “We have called the campaign the ‘Do Your Bit’ campaign because every single donation, no matter how large or how small, will make a difference. This is our biggest fundraising campaign in more than a decade and we are asking people right across the region to help us reach that £1.3million. “The new suite marks a major step in terms of research and treatment here at Weston Park Hospital and will enable our patients to receive the most up to the minute treatments for their cancer, both now and in the future. It will benefit

The campaign has received a further boost with a major donation of £300,000 from Yorkshire Cancer Research. Weston Park Hospital is recognised regionally, nationally and internationally for the standard of care it provides to its patients. The new development will transform cancer care and help to ensure that the hospital remains in the 'premier league' of cancer care. Doctors at the hospital work closely with colleagues at the University of Sheffield to carry out cancer research and clinical trials, which widens a patient’s treatment options. Professor Rob Coleman, Yorkshire Cancer Research Professor of Medical Oncology, at Weston Park Hospital, said: “We will be able to offer more trials and more novel treatments to our patients. It will keep Weston Park Hospital as a world leader and give patients the opportunity to access the latest treatment at the earliest opportunity.” One in five of the hospital’s patients -1,500 people per year, are put on a clinical trial. While the number of patients on a clinical trial will remain the same, doctors will be able to offer access to a wider variety of trials in the Cancer Research and Treatment Suite, which will bring together all daypatients needing anti-cancer treatment. The new Suite will create a combined state-ofthe-art facility, to offer a more flexible service by bringing together the expertise of both clinical trials and the Daycase Service Unit in one place. Patients will have a greater degree of privacy and dignity.

Tarot Card and Zodiac Signs
7. Libra the Scales - The Chariot This is the decision card. There are conflicting influences in your life. Get some self control and make that important decision. The card shows a chariot in black and white pulling in two directions. This implies a conflict that must be resolved.
The word “Tarot” sometimes evokes a discomfort which is not really justified. This is an old method of understanding more about yourself. Each card depicts a symbol and has a corresponding number. There are twenty two Acarna but in this instance I will only be using your Numerology card number, corresponding to your zodiac sign and personal zodiac number.
8. Scorpio the Scorpion - The Strength card The greatest strength is found in your vulnerability. The strength card represents a forgiving and forgetting factor. Gentle guidance is needed to solve a problem. The card depicts a female with her head in the lion’s mouth. Don’t tread where angels fear to tread or you will be making a big mistake.
1. Aries the Ram - The Magician This card helps the mind to think up good concepts and ideas, in turn bringing your ideas into focus and reality. A writers card.
9. Sagittarius the Archer - The Hermit He in turn represents our most secretive self. Human contact with a loved will bring the Hermit into reality. He is depicted with a lamp showing the way to travellers. The Archer is the most travelled zodiac sign according to research. So a good card to be chosen from the Arcanum.

WELCOME to our May edition of The Wedding Guide... Where has the time gone? We are almost half way through the year already, but at least it looks like the summer has arrived, what a beautiful two weeks we have had. After that awful wet April we endured, we all deserve some sunshine, and doesn’t it make you feel better. The smell of bbq’s is in the air, and everyone is smiling. This is the kind of weather that every bride dreams of for her wedding day . Well the Guide is proving to be a great success already. I have had several calls from the service providers on this page saying we have put them firmly on the map, and opened up a whole new world, so come on all you brides to be, there must be someone on this guide who has got what you are looking for. I am sure you will have already found the first two editions useful and interesting, and guess what? I have had my first email from bride to be Abigail who lives in Swallownest, Sheffield. Hi Abi, first of all I would like to congratulate you on your forthcoming wedding. Abi would like some ideas on Wedding Venues in Sheffield and Rotherham. There are plenty on these pages to choose from, but Abi is particularly interested in any venue that has a Marquee, the only one I am aware of is the beautiful Aston Hall Hotel, which is only up the road from Swallownest. It is directly by Aston church and so perfect for a church wedding, followed by the reception at the hotel. Aston Hall also have a civil license to marry on their premises in several different rooms or the marquee, which holds 120 guests, so its perfect for you Abi. Give them a call and go and view the premises, and don’t forget to tell them the Mercury recommended them. If you need any more help Abi, let us know, and please let us know how you got on with Aston Hall so we can share your views on this page. It would be nice if you could send us a photograph of yourself and your fiancé so we can see who we are talking to. If any one else knows of any other marquees, please let me know, and I want to hear your news, come on girls, please share your highs and lows, your good and bad with us on this page, I want to hear all about it and so do the other readers. Send me your success stories, or photographs of your special day. Email me at mandy@ mercurynewspaper.co.uk It is your page as well as mine. The guide will be published the last Wednesday of the month throughout the summer until September, and will be full of helpful advice and information to help you plan your special day. Don’t forget to put the Mercury Wedding Fair at the Hillsborough Stadium on Sunday 16th September in your diary, if you are looking for ideas for a 2013 wedding, or last minute extra’s for a late wedding this year, it is sure to be a large prestigious event. Entry is free, and we will give you a complimentary glass of bucks fizz for the Bride and Groom, as a warm welcome. If you are an exhibitor, I still have space available at competitive rates so call me now for further details. This week’s topic is Budget The average wedding is said to cost £20.000. I can imagine how easy it is to get carried away and reach that amount. Obviously, you don’t have to spend that much, some venues are offering the whole package for under £2000, so it can be as extravagant or as intimate as you want. Prioritising which elements of the wedding to spend most of your budget on can be daunting, but at least half of it will be spent on the food and venue, so the remaining half has to be spent wisely. You can do this by asking the question ‘what do I want my guests to remember most about our wedding day’ It could be the dress, the
band, the finishing touches, so bear that question in mind, and spend on that accordingly. You will always spend over budget, so divide it into sections for flowers; cars etc but allow a little more for the things that are close to your heart. It will require deep thought and organisation, and no doubt cause a few little disagreements. Moving onto our pages this week, Many of our advertisers in this feature have been in the business for a number of years and can offer you experience, value and customer service, but mainly, their aim is to help make your day the most memorable, special occasion. I have had the pleasure of working along side most of these people, and have witnessed their dedication, passion and commitment to making your day special Venues are generally one of the first things on your list to choose, as this will be the main focus of the event. They are also booked up well in advance, up to 3 years in some cases, so its never to early to view them. Large, small, grand or intimate, each wedding is different, and each venue can offer different things depending on your requirements. It is always good to view a couple of venues in mind, and go and view them, more than once if need be. The proprietor will be more than happy to show you around, and talk through your requirements until you are happy with your choice. The Sitwell Arms at Renishaw are proud sponsors of our Wedding Guide, and they provide quality facilities at affordable prices. It is a beautiful 18th century coaching inn with beautiful surroundings, perfect for the photographs. The Old Rectory in Handsworth is set in beautiful surroundings, whether you want a buffet or a banquet, this venue can cater for 5 for 150 guests. Whitley Hall is an historic building where not only can you celebrate in style, they are also licensed for civil ceremonies, so the ceremony and the wedding breakfast can all take place under one roof. The Burghwallis in Doncaster has extensive grounds for photograph opportunities, as well as a civil licence and facilities to cater for up to 120 guests.
The Perfect Honeymoon Destination...
AMSTERDAM
Looking for a venue with a difference? The Kiveton and Wales Parish Hall offer you the whole package for one cost, so check them out. Other venues include, the Earl Marshall, Southey Club, The Sherwood, and the Malin Bridge who all offer value for money wedding receptions with the best in service and attention. Sarah at All Seated venue dressing in Swallownest sure knows how to dress a table and a venue. Her twinkle backdrops are the show piece of any wedding, and I have seen them, from grand to dainty, Sarah has dressed them all. All seated also provide bridal jewellery and hair accessories, as well as cards, gifts and balloons, and much more, so visit her showroom, you will be spoilt for choice and well looked after. The honeymoon is always an exciting choice, if you call Chris at Avista UK, he will personally assist you in your choice. He has some amazing cruises to choose from, and conducts all tours himself, so he is an expert. The next Wedding Guide, will be out on Wednesday 27th June, but in the meantime, good luck with the planning, and don’t forget to call our experts for friendly advice and help, Or email me with your news See you next month…..Mandy

CAMRA CELEBRATES 101 BEER DAYS OUT CALLS TO PENALISE UNDER-18S THAT BUY ALCOHOL Britain is enjoying a golden age for brewing, with over 850 breweries now operational across the country producing over 5,500 different beers. To celebrate this remarkable industry, CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale has released a new book, ‘101 Beer Days Out’ to showcase how Britain has beer and brewing experiences to rival any in the world. CAMRA’s 101 Beer Days Out, by award-winning author Tim Hampson (Chairman of the British Guild of Beer Writers), brings together the most exciting ways to take in the nation’s rich beer and brewing culture, whether through conventional city pub trails and tourist brewery tours, or via more unusual – and eccentrically British – events such as bog snorkelling or the World Marble Championships! Listing attractions, events, and venues that are must visit examples of Britain’s brewing
heritage and modern beer scene, the book is bursting with entries from the Orkney Isles to the south coast of Cornwall. With an estimated 30 million visitors to the UK in 2012, CAMRA hopes tourists will take the opportunity to experience Britain’s national drink. Tim Hampson, 101 Beer Days Out author, said:‘Beer travel is a new form of tourism. Think about when you visit a town or region that you’ve not been to before, and the first thing most of us do is seek out the best pub for a drink or something to eat. ‘101 Beer Days Out is much more than a book about pubs and breweries and their beers. It is a travel book, which can help you explore the length and breadth of Britain. It is a history book through which the reader can explore local traditions and heritage. It is a book which weaves all these elements together to tell the story of beer from the grain to the glass and its place in British culture.’
Breaking down the listings in 11 regional sections, readers of 101 Beer Days Out are supplied with a full event calendar to plan their year in beer. A few of Hampson’s favourite days out from the book, from around the country, include route in the South East, South West, East of England, East Midlands, West Midlands, Wales, Yorkshire & The Humber, North West, North East and Scotland. CAMRA’s 101 Beer Days Out is out now, available from the CAMRA shop and all good book retailers, (www.camra.org.uk/ shop) priced £12.99 (£10.99 for CAMRA members).
A licensed trade consultant has launched an e-petition calling on the Government to take action against under 18year-olds who attempt to buy alcohol in pubs. Michael Kheng says the on-trade is “always targeted and blamed” for underage sales of alcohol yet To be in with a chance of winning a copy of CAMRA’s those that commit the crime are “never, or rarely, penalised”. 101 Beer Days Out simply With many outlets investing send your name and daytime heavily in preventative telephone contact number measures, the petition calls for

the police to issue fixed-penalty notices to under-18s committing the offence. Currently, a member of bar staff or the licensee could be given an £80 on-thespot fine for serving alcohol to anyone under-18. The licensee could also face a licence review, and a fine of up to £20,000. If the petition reaches 100,000 signatures, the issue will be debated in Parliament. This week we recorded a service of Thanksgiving for the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen at the Rotherham Minster. The service held on Saturday morning was led by the Vicar of Rotherham, Rev. Canon David Bliss to celebrate the 60 year reign of the Queen. The service was attended by dignitaries from Rotherham including the Lord Lieutenant, the Mayor and leader of the council. Other invited dignitaries from Barnsley, Doncaster and Wakefield were in attendance. The congregation of almost 200 came from a variety of churches across Rotherham. The service was translated into British Sign Language for the deaf and hard of hearing community. The hour long service included hymns, bible readings and prayers, including the Diamond Jubilee Prayer written at the Queen’s direction by the Chapter of St Paul’s Cathedral. Our recording of the service will be broadcast on Radio Nightingale on Sunday 3 June at 5.00pm as part of our Diamond Jubilee schedule. Also on Sunday there’ll be a Diamond Jubilee special of The A to Z of Pop with Richard Smith. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. MAGIC AM MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
Well alongside playing all the great songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s on Magic, it’s especially nice when we manage to get the stars who made those tunes into the building as well. There’s a treat in store this weekend when we welcome the one and only David Cassidy who is presenting a show featuring his own favourite songs. What was the rivalry like between him and Donny Osmond? Was it difficult moving away from making hit records? May be he featured on your bedroom wall, he was certainly on all three of my big sister’s! No doubt he’ll answer some of these questions and tell a fair few many stories along with featuring some good music – Saturday 1.00pm on the Magic Gold Weekend. Next week we’ll also be looking ahead to the first major concert that’s being held at the home of the Chesterfield, the B2 Net Stadium. Elton John plays there on Saturday June 9th and I’ll have some more FREE tickets to give away on air in the mornings between 6.00 and 10.00am next week. I look forward to your company!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CLUB HISTORIANS PART TWO CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
Four years ago, my investigations into clubs and their users past and present, had led me to the CIU HQ where their archives were kindly opened for me. It was suggested that I put something in the Club Journal about my research with a request for information and stories. I was very happy with the responses, with offers of information and support. Plus there was a suggestion from a Geoff in South Yorkshire that I set up a website. We discussed by email the possibilities and it went from there, with Geoff offering to do all the techie stuff. We thought it would attract a few hundred people and provide some useful contacts but it quickly took off far beyond our expectations. It was clear that we were catering for an audience that had long been neglected. We encouraged, still do in fact, people to send in their own experiences, memories and views and write up the stories they want to share. We cannot answer all the queries that come in about committees and rules but instead point people in the direction of their local CIU branch office. Some people have become such regular contacts and feel like friends- a veritable ‘club family’ has grown up around the site. Many invites to visit clubs are received to meet those on the other side of the laptop. I realised early on that doing write ups of clubs would be useful, even of clubs that have closed such as the Dial House. We now have 34 write ups in the Club Factfile section. There is always a warm welcome when visiting a club with my tape recorder and camera and I am usually rewarded with lots of wonderful stories, information and a few halves of lager! Club Historians was the first site to collate a list of clubs online, offering this as a free service. There are around 150 clubs listed here so anyone wanting to visit another club can simply click and go! CIU founder Henry Solly probably would be baffled but I like to think he’d be happy with the service that Club Historians provide also its campaigning side, as it highlights the valuable community roles played by clubs as well as their important social capital that should go on into the future. Club Historians is not just about looking to the past, but very much towards the future!

REVEREND & THE MAKERS REVIEW 25/05/12 LEADMILL Words by Katy Evans
And…..they’re back. Hail the heavyweight Gods of Sheffield’s dazzling music scene, Reverend & The Makers may have strayed from the chart topping path in recent years, however are back to shape indie crowds across the country into their very own Makers minions. Returning home to a sold out Leadmill main stage appearance, we all forgot about the dodgy second album instead embracing what succumbed to one of the most upbeat and passionate display of welcome seem for years. And hell did they deserve it… Having sprung their way onto the national UK charts back in 2007 with the massive debut album ‘The State Of Things,’ John Mcclure and Co. aren’t your typical Northern post-Brit Pop quintet. They’ve got charm…lyrically, the front man could quite easily sweet talk the pants off even the most stoniest of hearts with lyrics ‘…tap room gossip, spies in Mother Care...,’ ‘…put on my best shirt I’m gonna score…,’ and ‘…make Sundays vow that we won’t get so leathered…’ all pretty much throwing it out there. They’ve got charisma…a sponge wouldn’t have enough space to soak up all the energy omitted from the crowd when belters off their debut were blasted. But most strikingly, they seem to have crafted their very own niche into the UK market…forget carbon copies or naff imitations, Reverend & The Makers sca-esque riffs and staccato bouncy melodies ensure the group’s certified unique sound through and through. A rarity yes, but most importantly the bands signature trade mark. Opening with ‘Empire Of The Sun,’ Mcclure was the puppet master to over seven hundred fans, all of which were here for one reason alone…the triumphant return of Sheffield’s infamous heroes. Cranking out some of the golden oldie classics ‘Bandits’ and ‘He Said He Loved Me,’ the bands most prolific single ‘Heavyweight Champion Of The World’ in theory should have concluded the set, instead planting its way towards mid-way processions. An unusual set list to say the least, the night took a brief lull with a string of new releases and second album bombs which were thrown in the mix…because of the stature of such a celebrated night, it would have made more sense to shower the set with the majority of hits from ‘The State Of Things’ which are undoubtedly crowd pleasers across all Reverend fans. Taking the more alternative route however made the night seem patchy and at times uneven until album#1 hits were performed… but hey with a debut record that hit the top ten charts with almighty force, what would you expect? Check out www.iamreverend.com for all the latest.

YASHIN
From harbouring one of the most dedicated fan bases in the current post hardcore market to touring Europe with some of rocks most prolific names, Yashin are on a mission to stamp their brutal mark over the UK. Ahead of the release of their hugely anticipated second studio album ‘We Created a Monster,’ Mercury speaks to screams vocalist Kev Miles to see if they really have created the next Frankenstein’s monster… Laying the nest within the Northern regions of Glasgow, Yashin chewed up five of Scotland’s most passionate musicians (plus your token American) to create a stand out album ‘Put Your Hands Where I Can See Them’ back in 2009. With the hope and a prayer of any inspired upcoming group, the post hardcore pioneers have gone on to reach impossible heights to include an extensive tour with Red Jumpsuit Apparatus last year, along with sharing some of Rock’s most infamous stages with Black Veil Brides and Papa Roach. But with a release date of 25th June for the bands second studio belter ‘We Created A Monster,’ the strength from such a powerful debut album was always going to be a challenge to follow. ‘We are all so proud of (Put Your Hands Where I Can See them) record, although it still didn’t get as big as we wanted it to,’ reveals Scottish screamer Kev, who completed the groups line-up back in 2009. ‘There were just six of us working our asses off, because we were a new band, it was a debut album and very much up to us. But with We Created A Monster, we’ve got a really good team behind us now. You know, our management are putting shows on for us which means we can concentrate on the music instead of trying to make it as a band.’ Having already sampled the bands most recent single ‘New Year or New York’ back in April of this year, it’s evident how much Yashin’s hardcore nature has stepped up a gear or two. Forget Britney Spears covers or wavering moments of five out of ten on the Richter Scale, Scotland’s finest exports have well and truly beefed up what is to be one of the most exciting releases of the year. ‘Although we haven’t written an album for almost two and a half years, we wanted everyone to know that we’re still here, still the same band but coming back with a heavier sound.’ Ok ok so we could now go one about how much of a sellout it is to up sticks and move to a much heavier avenue, but there really is no need. Yashin simply don’t appear to have sold their soul to the mosh pitting devil, and hell their fan base really does speak for itself. But after almost two years of slipping under the single releasing radar, why have we not heard from the Northern belters since mid-recession? ‘Over the two years since we recorded and released the first album, we’ve constantly toured, we were constantly on the road. Finding time between touring to concentrate on a new album was difficult. We’ve been on the road with Black Veil Brides, Papa Roach, Red jumpsuit Apparatus last year, which meant it was a tall order to write a new record. Harry and myself got to know each other more when we joined in 2009 and although our music tastes are chalk and cheese, the songs materialized into the new album We Created A Monster.’

INTERVIEW Words by Katy Evans
round-up by stuart renton
I hate to say it. I really do, but it’s hard being an omniscient love god with almost supernatural powers to see the future. I said last week what a depressing mess this year’s Eurovision would be, and again, I hit the nail bang on the head with my prediction - not that I’m blowing my own trumpet or anything. The UK, as per usual, just managed to scrape a few points off the bottom position, which should come as no surprise to anyone and if you put money on ‘the ‘Hump’ to win, I can officially say you deserve a sharp slap with a stinky haddock (or maybe that’s exactly what you’re after! Anyway. Moving very swiftly onward. My personal Eurovision scorecard read something like this: twelve points goes to the singing Russian grannies as they were just brilliant. Depriving this act of victory shows Europe has no sense of humour. Graham Norton was a bit more amusing this year, so he gets my ten points (but still not nearly as brilliant as the genius commentary of Lord Terry of Wogan). My eight points goes to all the respondents in the points giving stage who think it’s ok to have a conversation – nay – an entire monologue before they give their country’s scores. This is Eurovision (where viewers have the attention span of a bludgeoned badger) not Richard the Third. Just give the damn scores and then get off you saccharine-sweet and overly cheery nutters. We don’t want to hear your empty platitudes about how great the show was, or how brilliant the frankly rubbish hosts of the show were… because we all know in reality that it was all slightly ropey and just a little bit crap! And you can call me miserable, but old Humperdinkkkk, with his dreary song, gets the traditional nil points from me. Another abysmal song choice made by the UK. With any luck, that will be the last we ever see of Jedward, and I can only hope they get packed away with the Eurovision set, only to be found in a year’s time crushed between two massive concrete floor panels. It’s mental images like those that really do give my day that extra bit of sparkle! Finally, on my list of things to rant about discuss calmly is the weather. Yes, I know it’s hot and I know we’re ALL talking about the weather. But does it really have to be all the time - Every. Bloody. Minute. Of. Every. Sodding. Day? It’s not like we’re aliens who’ve never seen snow (and are thus fascinated by it), but in the UK we are obsessed with the weather - over and over to mind-numbing proportions. I took my dogs out the other day and I think about two hundred people said: eeeh, it’s too warm, innit? Yes it’s warm, but if you cast your feeble minds back just ten days you’ll remember we’ve had more than two months of constant rain and temperatures that make your little boy parts vanish into the ether and give you nipples like the tips of Exocet Missiles (delete as applicable)! My point is that this weather ain’t going to last so let’s just enjoy it while we can. That said, have a great Jubilee (four days off), wear sun cream, and I’ll see you next week!

DEALING WITH FLEAS
No-one likes the idea of sharing their home with fleas, but as well as the occasional bite to owners, fleas can be an serious cause of distress and suffering for pets. “Fleas need warmth to thrive,” explains Sean Wensley, PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon. “As most homes now have central heating we are providing the perfect environment for them, so fleas are now a year-round problem. They reproduce rapidly, so regular preventive treatment with safe and effective products is vital.” To help pet owners, Sean has put together some top tips on dealing with fleas: · Choose the right product – many different products are available, but some over-the-counter treatments are not as effective as others, or as those prescribed by a vet. Ask your vet for advice, as they can recommend the most suitable treatment for your pet. · Treat regularly – this is important as some products will only kill adult fleas, so any remaining eggs and larvae will remain and continue to grow. Regular treatment breaks the life-cycle. · Never use a treatment intended for one species on another – for example, using a dog treatment on a cat is a common cause of poisoning, which can be fatal. Equally, exceeding the recommended dosage can make pets ill, so always follow the instructions. · Treat for worms too – fleas are actually vital in the life-cycle of some tape worms, so it’s important to treat your pets regularly for both types of parasite. · Treat all your pets – fleas can jump straight from one species to another, so it’s important to treat all the pets in your house at once. · Treat your home as well – flea eggs and larvae can live in carpets, beds and blankets so it’s important to treat your home to prevent re-infestation. Wash your pet’s bedding regularly, and vacuum areas where your pet spends time. Regular grooming helps to keep your pet’s coat in tip top condition, and it also gives you a chance to keep an eye out for any signs of skin problems, including those caused by fleas. Signs of fleas living on your pet include scratching, hair loss and red, inflamed skin. If your pet develops any of these signs, make an appointment with your vet. You may not have seen a flea, but that does not mean that none are present; sometimes they are difficult to detect. In addition, some pets are allergic to flea saliva, so even the bite from a single flea can cause serious discomfort. It is also important for your vet to rule out other possible causes, such as a bacterial infection or allergy. If fleas are diagnosed, your vet will advise you on treatment, including any other pets, and your home. For further information about protecting pets from fleas and other parasites, download a copy of PDSA’s free leaflet, Fleas and Ticks from www. pdsa.org.uk/leaflets.

angler’s corner
PARKLANDS POND
DONCASTER
by Clint Walker
Last week, I wrote about my brush with the law; the ‘Carp Police’ to be exact, on a forum where I dared to disagree with an opinion; well this time, I’m still writing about the internet, but for much nicer reasons! I had a phone call this morning from a fishery in Devon of all places whose owner had seen some of the work I do to promote Pallatrax both on the bank, in print and online, and asked if I would consider doing similar work on behalf of his venue. This got me thinking because although I recognise that ‘social media’ is an absolutely vital tool to tell anglers about a product, service or venue, many do not take advantage of it, or understand the cost effectiveness of this rapidly expanding global networking system. Now, I’m no expert when it comes to marketing strategies, consumer breakdown or customer trends, but I’ve been doing the social promotion for Pallatrax since September last year and we have already increased our website traffic (and web shop traffic) by well over 100%. Our Facebook pages (www.facebook.com/pallatrax if you are interested) has risen steadily from around 400 ‘likes’ to around 1300, and our Twitter (@pallatraxuk) has risen from a measly 32 followers to almost 1200! Does it convert to sales though? Of course it does; it may not have a direct impact on sales figures (it does sometimes though) where visitors all click through to our shop, but people who use our interactive social pages do much of our hard work for us when it comes to promoting products. Once the company is prepared to engage with its customers online and directly, then the happy customer posts pictures of his latest catch and extols the virtues of the product which encourages further sales. Is it that simple? No, obviously not; an unhappy client can make life hellishly uncomfortable online if he isn’t happy with either product or level of service provided. As the public ‘face’ of the company who responds directly, I have no recourse to slander, libel or just good old expletives whereas the offended party can do all that and more! So what is the best way to counter it? The only way is to treat customers as I would expect to be treated and ensure that the service provided online is right....then there can be no complaints! There are other drawbacks where people will ‘try it on’ just to see who blinks first; I remember an individual who proffered that he had ordered bait and not received it, then threatened an internet hate campaign unless my client refunded in full with compensation, or sent a double order. Clever sparring and good manners resulted in the guilty party being unable to provide any evidence of transaction, nor could it be confirmed on the computer logs or orders, (no such order existed) so it was blatantly an attempt to get ‘freebies’ or cash.... without success, but it can be a minefield. In my short column, there is my take on internet social media marketing; a double edged sword in part, but an exceptionally effective marketing tool; if you don’t use it to promote what you do, then you should!

Epsom: Friday: Stakes, Group 3, Fillies and Mares, 1.40 Princess Elizabeth Stakes 1m 114yds: I reckon that Joviality has a good chance here. Having been found wanting in two Group 1’s and a Group 2 on her last three outings, this Group 3 contest is a more realistic ask. She may have most to fear from Navarra Queen, Lay Time, Valencha and Boastful. Handicap, Class 2, 2.15 Investec Wealth and Investment Handicap 4yo+, 1m 2f 18yds: Ramona Chase is something of a favourite of mine and gets the nod in a tightly knit affair after winning last time out. The chief opposition would appear to be Fadhaa, Oceanway, Fork Handles, Pekan Star, Resurge and Roayh. 2.50 Investec Diomed Stakes, Group 3, 3yo+, 1m 114yds: A course and distance winner a year ago Dance and Dance may be able to step up to this level on a course that suits. However, last time out scorers Fury and Marcret are very likely to make it tough for the selection, along with Mac Love, St Moritz and Side Glance. 3.25 Investec Mile Handicap, Class 2, 4yo+, 0-105, 1m 114yds: Ralph Beckett’s Moone’s My Name gets the call in another very difficult handicap where almost any could win. Prince Jock, Man of Action, Filed of Dream and Starwatch head the long list of dangers. 4.05 Investec Oaks, Group 1, 3yo Fillies, 1m 4f 10yds: In what looks a wide open affair I like the chances of The Fugue (Musidora winner last time out), Kailani (unbeaten

and from a top stable), Kissed (unbeaten and from a top stable), Vow (unbeaten and won the Lingfield Oaks trial last time out) and Coquet (won her last three races including two Listed contests). Of the others Betterbetterbetter could be something of a surprise package at a big price. The form that appeals to me most however is that of the Musidora Stakes so the vote goes to The Fugue. Betterbetterbetter could be worth a small each way “saver” if the odds are still at 40/1 on the day. Saturday: 1.35 Diamond Jubilee Handicap, Class 2, 3yo, 0-105, 1m 2f 18yds: Gerard Butler’s Star Date earns a narrow vote over Mark Johnston’s Fennell Bay in another tight contest in which The Giving Tree is also in with a good chance on my reckoning. 2.05 Investec Woodcate Stakes, Listed, Class 1, 2yo, 6f: There are several highly promising types in the line up for this one. The ones that stand out most to my way of thinking are: Lastchancelucas; Liber; Top Boy; and Storm Moon. Lastchancelucas gets the nod as I was quite impressed with him at York. Storm Moon may give the selection most pressure towards the finish. 2.40 Diamond Jubilee Coronation Cup, Group 1, 4yo+, 1m 4f 10yds: Aidan O’Brien’s Treasure Beach could come out on top ahead of his St Nicholas Abbey and John Gosden’s Masked Marvel. The selection has top class form in the book and can make up for an unlucky defeat in last year’s Derby at the hands of Pour Moi. 3.15 Investec Specialist Bank “Dash” Handicap, Class 2, 3yo+, 5f: Getting the winner of this veritable cavalry charge is always something of a lottery. I like the chances of Long Awaited, Cadeaux Pearl, Ballesteros, Indian Trail and Judge’n’Jury. I have come down in favour of Judge’n’ Jury as he won last time out and has a very capable 5lb claimer on his back in Darren Edward Egan, who is beginning to look like the apprentice “find” if the season. 4.00 Investec Derby, Group 1, 3yo Colts, 1m 4f 10yds: Dante winner Bonfire gets the call after a very imperious win last time on the Knavesmire. Camelot is not to be underestimated however, but at 4/6 is just too short, and neither is Main Sequence who was also impressive when winning the Lingfield Derby trial where he showed a good turn of foot at the end of the race. Two others that also have decent chances in my estimation are Chester winners Mickdaam and Father of Science who could both be worth a small saver at the current odds of 33/1 and 50/1 respectively. Musselburgh, Saturday: 1.55 Toteplacepot Edinburgh Castle Conditions Stakes, 2yo, 5f: Assuming that Lastchancelucas and Liber both go to Epsom the way could be left open for David Brown’s Satsuma to score again. Heavy Metal looks to be the one for the forecast. 2.25 Totepool Tradesman’s Derby Handicap, Class 4, 3yo, 0-80, 1m 4f 100yds: Juno the Muffinman needs a few to drop out to get a run but that could happen and he merits the call in an open handicap. Of the others, Eshaab, Spirit of the Law, Rocktherunway and Cades Reef look to present most danger to the selection. 2.55 Totescoop6 Scottish Sprint Cup Handicap, 3yo+, 0-105, 5f: Dancing Freddy may be able to record a hat trick after winning last week at York. Go Go Green and Long Awaited look to me to be his most dangerous rivals. 3.30 Totepool.com Edinburgh Handicap, Class 2, 3yo, 0-105, 1m 4f 100yds: Handsome Man gets the nod here over Good Morning Star, Commitment, Gabrial the Hero and Ruacana. Haydock: 2.10 Bet at Bluesquare.com Stakes (Handicap), Class 2, 4yo+, 0-100, 2m 45yds: Taikoo could have too many guns for the likes of Palazzo Bianco, Western Pearl and Montaff who look to form the main opposition. 2.35 Timeform Jury Stakes, Group 3, 4yo+, 7f: I like the look of Red Jazz for this one. A winner over this course and distance on his last outing he probably has most to fear from Firebeam (who he beat narrowly then) and Royal Rock although Six of Hearts and Smarty Socks may also prove troublesome. 3.10 Grosvenor Casinos Pinnacle Stakes, Group 3, Fillies and Mares, 4yo+, 1m3f 100yds: Polygon should take all the beating if returning to her best form. Primeverre and Jehannedarc look next best. 3.40 Blue Square Sandy Lane Stakes, Listed, Class 1, 3yo, 6f: Roger Charlton’s Mince has earned the selection after her last gasp win at “Headquarters” last time out. Roger Sez could be the one to follow her home with Slade Power and Fanrouge also not too far away.

OWLS MAKE SECOND OWLS SKIPPER SUMMER SIGNING STANDING PROUD OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Sheffield Wednesday have continued their summer recruitment with the capture of defender Kieran Lee, who will join the Owls upon the expiry of his contract at Oldham Athletic. The 23-year-old right back has agreed a threeyear contract at Hillsborough. Lee came through the ranks with Premiership giants Manchester United, spending four years at Old Trafford - appearing in the Premiership and League Cup - before moving across Lancashire to join the Latics in 2008 via a loan spell with QPR. He made a total of 117 appearances for Oldham, chipping in with five goals along the way, and topped the Latics’ list last season with 53 starts from a possible 56. An immensely popular player at Boundary Park, Lee swept the board at the club’s Player of the Year awards in his first season, scooping all four accolades on the table, and then promptly repeated the feat last time out.
OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Owls captain Rob Jones has said winning promotion to the Championship with Wednesday is one of the proudest achievements of his career. Jones made 37 appearances in total last season as the Owls regained their Championship status after a two-year absence. The skipper said: “To be made captain of this club and to help them win promotion - it doesn’t get much better than that. “I’m always proud to captain Sheffield Wednesday. It’s been great for me and I have enjoyed it thoroughly. “It’s mission complete in terms of what we wanted to achieve. “We wanted to get out of League 1 and into the Championship. It’s been a long, long season but we got what we wanted and now we can look forward.” Looking back at the campaign, Jones has paid tribute to the fans for their support throughout the season - the highlight of which was seeing over 37,000 Wednesdayites crammed into Hillsborough on the final day of the season. “You’ll probably never see that many Sheffield Wednesday fans inside Hillsborough again and that is a memory you have got to cherish,” Jones said. “The fans have been fantastic from start to finish. They stuck with us during the downs and came along with us in the ups. “Away from home we’ve sold out our tickets week in, week out. When you go to places such as Wycombe and Exeter and the away end is sold out, it just brings home how big the club is and how much it means to our supporters.”
McCABE PLANNING ROVERS STADIUM STATEMENT FOR SUCCESS BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Kevin McCabe spoke positively after watching his team suffer the heartache of the penalty shoot-out defeat to Huddersfield Town. “We won’t be wallowing in self pity,” said McCabe “Yes, we have suffered a set-back. But we are looking to the future now, not back. The planning has already started and we are planning for success. “I don’t think any reasonable person can say we have not given it our all over the course of the year and we’ll be doing exactly the same thing again over the course of next season, to get to where we want to be.” The shaping of the 2012/13 squad will begin immediately. “Now we know what division we are in, everything begins in earnest,” explained the Blades owner. “There are young players who I know the staff feel are ready to make the step-up and they’ll be given the opportunity to do that, together with others I’m sure who will be coming in. “We have had a successful season which has unfortunately ended in failure. We fell at the final and that hurts. It hurts a lot. “The supporters have been fantastic this season and that’s been very much noted and appreciated by all. We hope they stick with us, which we’re sure they will do, because they are a crucial part of what we are trying to achieve.”

ROVERS NEWS www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk
John Ryan, Chair of Doncaster Rovers Football Club said: “This is fantastic news for Doncaster and we are pleased that the council Cabinet have ratified a deal which will see Doncaster Rovers take over the running of the Keepmoat Stadium. “This is clearly the best option for the future of the stadium and the option which meets the needs of local residents by removing the current burden on the tax payer. In-depth legal discussions will now take place and subject to an agreement being made we will take over management of the stadium on July 1 2012. “We will work closely with both the council and the Stadium Management Company to ensure that any deal firmly embeds the stadium in the heart of the community. “Our aim is to bring the stadium back to the residents, our fans and the business community and to remind people that the Keepmoat Stadium is a venue to be proud of.”
DOUBLE BLOW FOR MILLERS BOSS EVANS MILLERS NEWS www.themillers.co.uk
Millers boss Steve Evans is disappointed a deal to sign an unnamed wide player fell through on Tuesday. Evans admitted Monday afternoon that a deal was close and he expected to tie up the signing Tuesday, but terms could not be agreed forcing the Millers manager to now look elsewhere. “Yesterday (Monday) we thought that a deal had been agreed for the young man to join us but he has arrived this morning (Tuesday) with his representative, we had a brief handshake and I left him with Paul Douglas. Paul has since told me that a deal could not be concluded in line with the numbers we are working to, so he has now left the building and he hasn’t signed,” Evans told Millers Player. “Paul has told me that the numbers didn’t meet with what we had agreed and written down yesterday. He is someone who I still like as a player, someone I thought we could develop but it wasn’t to be. “It is disappointing, we thought yesterday (Monday) that we were there, but Paul (Douglas) hasn’t moved the goalposts, that I do know.” Evans also admitted yesterday that talks with a central midfielder were ‘at an advanced stage’ but in a double blow for the Millers boss, that deal is also in danger of collapsing. “Communications might resume on that but at this minute in time that deal is off too,” added Evans.
