SHEFTIVAL ANNOUNCE FIRST WAVE OF LINE-UPS M.V. MOBILITY A selection of artists as diverse as John Peel’s record collection will appear at summer festival, Sheftival on 4th and 5th August in Don Valley Bowl. Sheffield’s famous bowl is the idyllic mixing pot to blast out a rich recipe of reggae, indie, roots music and 2-tone, all weekend long. The Sheftival Main Arena consists of the Tramlines Arena which features the Real Radio Main Stage, the JuJu Club Stage, and the Sharrow Family Village. Between them, our festival partners have brought together some incredible acts for the two day event. We’re delighted to announce that ska and reggae legends, Toots and The Maytals, will be at Sheftival! They’ll be belting out tune after tune
on the Juju Club stage on the Saturday including hit records Monkey Man and Pressure Drop. Saturday festival goers can also enjoy a set from infamous 2-tone band, the Selecter, featuring the First Lady of Ska, Pauline Black. Sunday continues the pace with the sun-filled pop anthems of Liverpudlian band, The Lightning Seeds; alternative pop trio Dodgy; Sheffield’s own up-andcoming indie pop stars, The Crookes, as well as a headline set from more 2-tone legends in the form of The Beat. And yes, they still feature the legendary Rankin’ Roger! Throughout the weekend, further soundtracks will be provided by the big Rastaman himself, Macka B; Congolese superstar Kanda Bongo Man;
Sheffield Balkan brass and cabaret band, The Balkan Bandits; the awesome ska sounds of Jungle Lion, and a further feast of Jamaican music, sound systemstyle at the jerk chicken barbecue. Adding rockabilly rebel swagger to the bill is the wonderful Carmen Ghia And The Hot Rods; The Renegade Brass Band who’ll shake their money makers; the Bollywood Brass Brand who’ll lead the Sunday carnival parade around the site; Tramlines People’s Choice band, Sour Cherry, and many Sheffield locals on the Buskers Barge floating stage. But we’re not stopping there, oh no. Real Radio is set to bring an A-List lineup of pop acts across both days to stage Sheffield’s biggest outdoor pop concert
this summer. Real Radio Breakfast’s Dixie and Gayle said: “We are very excited to be part of ‘Sheftival’ and this first wave of artistes sound great. We’re big fans of The Lightning Seeds and Dodgy at Real Radio so we’re looking forward to seeing them play, but we are also looking forward to announcing the pop acts who’ll perform on the Real Radio main stage; soon people, soon! All we can say right now is roll on Sheftival; it’s going to be a fantastic star-studded, fun-packed couple of days! Be there.” In addition to the Real Radio line-ups, due to be announced late June, there will even more acts added to the bill. This includes an electronic dance line-up in the Monkey Bump Dance
Silks Laser Clinic
Tent showcasing Sheffield’s leading independent club brands, giving you even more variety and choice. Mixing pop, alternative and international genres from around the world will be the ultimate sound clash. When reggae finishes on one stage, pop will begin on another. Unlike most other festivals, Sheftival will even entertain festival goers between the music acts. Expect to see anything from British Judo displays to a Zumba dance-off as Sheftival combines two of Sheffield’s greatest legacies: music and sport, like never before. Tickets to access the Sheftival Main Arena at Don Valley Bowl cost just £12 for the day or £10 if you’re under 18. A family ticket is priced at £40.

WIN TICKETS Weekly Wit With... ALBERT TO SEE KELL BROOK FIGHT SNODGRASS AT THE ARENA Kell Brook will face highly ranked Carson Jones at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on Saturday July 7th as an IBF World title shot draws a step closer. Tickets priced £30, £40, £60, and £100 (booking fee may apply) are now on sale. Jones is ranked at number three by the IBF – two spots above Brook – and the stakes couldn’t be higher as the victor would move into pole position to fight for the title in the fall, which is being contested by current number one Mike Jones and number two ranked Randall Bailey on June 9 in Las Vegas. The Sheffield star thrilled a packed home crowd in the Arena in March when he dismantled Matthew Hatton in a master class that drew record viewing figures on Sky Sports for non-pay-per-view boxing. The 25 year old from Oklahoma has won his last eight fights inside the distance, and currently holds the USBA welterweight title, which he defended for the second time in April with a seventh round stoppage over Allen Conyers in his hometown, the 34th win and the 24th by KO. “It’s a step-up in class again and one that I’m truly ready for,” said Brook. “Jones is experienced for his age and has been avoided, but I want a World title shot and in order to get it, I need to go through him. “The Hatton night just blew my mind. It was the biggest crowd I’ve ever fought in front of and they were all there for me. That’s a very special feeling and I cannot wait to experience it again.” “Basically Kell Brook is the last person standing in my way to fight for a World title,” said Jones. “He will have to kill me to beat me because I have worked too hard to let anyone stop me from reaching my dream. “It does not matter if the fight is here, there or in Zimbabwe. I have made a living going to other people’s hometowns and knocking them out and this will be no exception. Kell Brook needs to be afraid, very afraid, because his fans are going to see him put to sleep on July 7th.” Tickets priced £30, £40, £60, and £100 (booking fee may apply) are now on sale, available in person from the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield box office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 and online at www. motorpointarenasheffield.com

Marvin, was in the hospital on his death bed. The family called Marvin’s Preacher to be with him in his final moments. As the Preacher stood by the bed, Marvin’s condition seemed to deteriorate, and Marvin motioned for someone to quickly pass him a pen and paper. The Preacher quickly got a pen and paper and lovingly handed it to Marvin. But before he had a chance to read the note, Marvin died. The Preacher feeling that now wasn’t the right time to read it put the note in his jacket pocket. It was at the funeral while speaking that the Preacher suddenly remembered the note. Reaching deep into his pocket the Preacher said “and you know what, I suddenly remembered that right before Marvin died he handed me a note, and knowing Marvin I’m sure it was something inspiring that we can all gain from. With that introduction the Preacher ripped out the note and opened it. The note said “HEY, YOU ARE STANDING ON MY OXYGEN TUBE!”

REPAIRS ON PRESCRIPTION
LONG TERM CONDITIONS http://longtermconditions.dh.gov.uk/
I’m a Senior Housing officer from Private Housing Standards – my usual role is inspecting private rented housing and requiring landlord to carry out repairs and improvements. I have lots of experience inspecting houses in Sheffield and usually respond to complaints from tenants, work with landlords to persuade them to carry out works, but can serve enforcement notices if necessary The links between people’s health and the housing conditions they live in are well known and have been the subject of many reports. Finding a way to link the work of health professionals to the home conditions of their patients can be difficult. It’s not a link that happens the moment. The Housing Act 2004 identified 29 health and safety hazards or conditions likely to be harmful to health Sheffield House condition survey carried out in 2009 found the top 5 hazards in Sheffield housing stock are: Falls on Stairs, Falls on the Level – slips and trips inside and outside, Fire risk, Excess cold – often linked to damp and mould inefficient heating, Home security – risk of entry by intruders. The Repairs on Prescription was a pilot project with Private Housing Standards working in partnership with the NHS and health professionals and the Council falls prevention team to identify risks to the occupant from those 5 hazards and offer a handyperson or small builder service to carry out minor repairs and improvements in the home to reduce the risk of accidents and harm to health from those top 5 hazards The project was based in the Page Hall and Fir Vale S4 area with tenants of Private rented housing - worst housing conditions in the private rented sector. We were seeking referrals from a range of partners – District nurses, care workers, City wide alarms, Fire service, advice and support agencies, Occupational therapists and it could also be family and friends We assessed properties then worked with a partner agency who employed builders to carry out the works with landlord and tenant consent. Where we found excess cold and fear of fuel bills we offered specialist advice on energy efficiency and affordable warmth We had to ask a landlords to carry out some works where actual repairs are needed and offer to do others we couldn’t enforce, such as tidying cables, securing carpets. A Total of 47 referrals were obtained in a 2 month period – 35 proceeded. Process Following referral homes were visited initially to identify possible works to address the top 5 hazards of Falls on Stairs, Excess cold, Falls on the Level, Fire safety, Entry by Intruders. There was a notional budget of £4-500 per property, to do 50 referrals from a budget of £20,000 but some ended up costing much more, and some much less. Average cost was about £700 per property Budget constraints limited what hazards could be dealt with at each property – most houses had more than one hazard, and poor state of repair of many houses meant other repairs were flagged up to landlords alongside works offered free under the scheme. Some landlords were prompted to carry out other repairs alongside the project works, others are requiring formal enforcement action to deal with other repairs.
The Department of Health (DH) is leading on the development of a cross-government long term conditions strategy. We know that long term conditions can affect many aspects of people’s lives, not just their health. So DH want the strategy to set out a vision for how services such as health, social care, education, housing and others can work together to improve life chances and outcomes for people living with long term conditions. This vision will cover helping to prevent or delay the onset of conditions, preventing deterioration of conditions and helping to develop joined up services to support people living with long term conditions. The strategy won’t cover specific detail of how services are delivered. They are asking people to comment until 15 June on what should be in the strategy but are not holding a formal consultation. They aim to publish the strategy by the end of 2012 and it will apply to England only. The strategy will contain common aims or ’shared goals’, which we aim for all government departments to sign up to. These goals haven’t been decided yet but they have drafted some for people to discuss. If you want to, you can comment on these when you tell us what you think at http://longtermconditions. dh.gov.uk/have-your-say/ or if you would prefer to respond by post please write to Long term conditions team, Room 2N16, Quarry House, Quarry Hill, Leeds LS2 7UE. These are the draft shared goals: People will be supported to stay healthy and avoid developing a long term condition, where possible. People will have their conditions diagnosed early and quickly. Services will be joined up, and based around individuals’ biological, psychological and social needs. People with long term conditions will be socially included, including succeeding in work and education. People with long term conditions will be as independent as possible and in control of their lives (up to and including the end of life). People with long term conditions will be supported to stay as well as possible.

This friendly, unique and family-run centre opened its doors on 10th March 2012 as the new home of Freshlook Furniture. After the High Street Banks showed little interest in the project, Paul, Dawn and Paul’s partner Anne decided to invest in the funding themselves, having seen the huge potential of this stunning Grade Two Listed building. They restored and revived the original features of the interior to create a fresh, vibrant antique centre. All original features were elegantly and cleverly reused wherever possible; the old vault was made into a bespoke cabinet room by Paul, now showcasing a range of exquisite finds; Anne
lovingly restored the original Victorian ceramic tiling; and the cornice and interior mouldings were delicately painted by Dawn with the help of her brother Les. The result is a truly amazing building which is very pleasing on the eye. All the hard work has to be seen to be appreciated – and the bank has now unlocked its doors to showcase a range of timeless treasures belonging to over thirty dealers within the centre. The range includes traditional antiques and vintage-inspired items within the Fresh & Chic Boutique (located on the top level of the centre.) There are endless displays of fantastic jewellery, vintage clothing, contemporary art and vintage toys. There are two

ALL THE YOUNG 09/06/12 THE PLUG
live PREVIEW
Words by Katy Evans
Rapidly rising up the ranks to result in one of the most talked about new bands of this year, All The Young are fast becoming pioneers within the British indie rock scene. With a brand new album, tour slots and national recognition now safely tucked under their belts, the four piece from Stoke On Trent are set to perform at Sheffield’s Plug on 9th June. Recently been named as one of XFM’s top twelve bands to watch out for throughout 2012, All The Young have a vision of reinventing purely British guitar fuelled compositions. Believing a genuine lull has been spread out across the UK, lead vocalist Ryan Dooley reveals, “The thing is, I can understand as much as anyone right now why there’s been a lull in proper guitar tunes. People have been waiting for something bigger to come along. When there’s a lull it made me want it more and fuelled the hunger for it.” And with tracks The Horizon, Welcome Home and The First Time, it’s plain to hear how much of an impact this movement is having upon the upcoming new group. Their overall sound is that of the postBrit Pop scene and with their signature reliance upon instrumentally tailored chorus lines, All The Young would most certainly not sound out of place thorough any day time radio station airplay. They have a uniquely commercial sound which easily stocks around after their belters have faded away… Having already shared the stage with the likes of Morrissey, Kaiser Chiefs and The Courteeners, All The Young are no strangers to the public’s critical eye. Opening up for two nights alongside The Wombats, the quartet have gone on to record their debut album, ‘Welcome Home’ which snatched up a hugely impressive number thirty two on the UK album charts. “Welcome Home’ was the one when after we first played it all the way through, we looked around at each other in a different way. Like we didn’t know we had it in us,” says bassist Jack Dooley. “It means business that one. There’s no way you can play it without your heart and soul fully in it.” All The Young will be performing at Sheffield’s Plug on 9th June alongside Sheffield indie pack Section Sixty as well as with Kartica. A night no doubt full of premier upbeat tunes, don’t miss out on your chance to witness one of the UK’s most prosperous live bands. Check out www.the-plug.com for all the latest info.

Words by Katy Evans
Springing into life upon an already hectic schedule of summer festivals, Crash Doubt runs in the same vein as Ghost Fest, Hit The Deck and Slam Dunk to serve up a selection of some of the UK’s most brutal live bands. Having only been in its second year of running on the national circuit, the two day event offered an alternative celebration to the Jubilee Concert, although with attendee numbers on a dangerously low level, its pretty safe to say…Queen – 1, Crash Doubt – 0. Spread across three stages throughout The Showroom conference venue in Lincoln centre, in theory Crash Doubt should have been a huge hardcore high five. With headliners to include Feed The Rhino, Bleed From Within and Devil Sold His Soul, the calibre of acts could easily have propped up the event and raised it up to a well-deserved weekend of brutally kick-ass rock. But we strike the key component…attendees. Ok ok so progressive hardcore, post punk and alternative screamo rock are needless to say a niche market, however with the majority of people either in a band or friends of the performers, finding a viewer without a VIP wrist band on was somewhat of a difficult challenge. Letting this not hold back the power and energy put both into performing live, Mallory Knox took to the Big cheese stage like any seasoned professional to deliver, under the circumstances, a punchy live show. Performing their brand new track ‘Hello,’ the five piece let loose with a rhythmically first rate show along with sterling melodic vocals throughout the half hour long set, to succumb to one of the primary highlights of the weekend. Hildamay, London’s alternative rock pack attempted to seize the Lincolnshire crowd with gritty chorus lines and ear splitting guitar riffs, but with viewers peaking little over forty pairs of eyes, better look next time guys. Placed onto the bill of the Kerrang Awards tour with Welsh reggae metal kings Skindred, as standard procedure for a critically acclaimed live band, Feed The Rhino failed not to deliver big on all levels. With lead vocalist Lee Tobin combining more energy than a caged circus bull waiting to rip open his keeper, the front man not only leaps into action from the word ‘go,’ but combines this with passion and fervour in bucket loads of abundance. Performing tracks ‘The Butcher’ as well as a sample of new material from the groups most recent album ‘The Burning Sons,’ FTR smash together the bolshiest of rhythmic sections along with splintering melodies to result in a set more intense than a three hour showing of the Queen’s Jubilee concert. Check Out www.crashdoubt.tumblr.uk for next years announcements.

REVIEW
round-up
by stuart renton The winner of The Voice was crowned over the weekend and… that’s right, no one cared. The media is calling the victor “the Fat one” (AKA Leanne). But again, as no one watched, it’s an issue of absolutely no importance whatsoever and she’ll be forgotten before… sorry, who was I talking about? Susan Boyle hit the news this week for being offensive in Burger King after she stopped off for food after a London show. I was appalled by this story – the mere fact anyone could call Burger King ‘food’ is just ridiculous! Sorry, must focus on the issue. Yes. SUBO again has made headlines with the story that she’s suffering from mental illness and depression. Hang on, her behaviour could just be because she’s a b***h! I mean, that’s the most logical option, right? My friends the other day asked me how far it was to Skegness as they wanted to go see Ashleigh and Pudsey at Butlins. I wanted to say if you want to see a dancing dog, just go to any club in Rotherham on a Saturday night. The place is packed with them. Joke! That was a joke! There’s no need to write in and complain. Although, talking about complaints… In other news, people actually complained to the BBC about the little publicised fact that it was the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this weekend. The “expert” reporters at the Daily Mail said there were a number of people who felt there was ‘too much coverage of the event’ at the BBC. It doesn’t really need saying that these people need to get a life. Not only is this a once in a lifetime event, it’s only ever happened once before and love it or loathe it, if you don’t care about it, just switch of the telly and go and do something else. Don’t waste anyone’s time complaining about it. Anyway. It was probably the rain that caused the veritable hordes of anti-royalists to complain, or it could just have been another huge exaggeration by the paper that brought you Andrew “Sachsgate” – which saw literally tens of thousands of people write in to complain about a radio broadcast they had to find on YouTube before they could be justifiably outraged! But hang on, I hear you cry: you’re a journalist; you’re speaking to the nation. Why should we believe anything you tell us? Well, that’s a very good point, but, unlike the daily tabloids, it should be clear that everything I say is merely a cheap excuse for a smutty innuendo. We should take everything we read in the papers with a dose of scepticism as most journalists would sell their own children to the Michael Jackson’s School for Orphans for a good story about Cheryl Cole and a wide range of kitchen appliances. You see. That’s the kind of level we’re at on this column. There’s no getting irate about the BBC coverage of the Queen here (although I could probably find an innuendo in there if I really wanted to). And, on that note, it’ll be Wimbledon soon, and being the “high calibre” sports journo that I am I’ve been sent on a mission to get down and dirty with the talent. That’s right, I’ll be covered with the top male seed over the coming weeks. Oh yes. This is high class journalism at its best. More next week!

Tues: Feeling his newly formed bond with his father could be at stake if he introduces Aidan too soon, Chris backs down. By lying to Aidan, is Chris setting himself up for disaster? After the terrible date with Bernard, Susan attempts to avoid him by taking a different yoga class. Brax is convinced that Hayley is still playing her games and suggests that she should leave town. Gina has organised a mediation between Casey and Townsend to allow Casey to apologise for punching him. Townsend is convinced not to press charges. But then the River Boys take matters into their own hands. Colleen is left feeling disappointed by the people she thought of as family. Wed: Colleen is so overcome with a surprise farewell party that she starts to question whether she wants to leave the Bay. Townsend has decided to press charges against Casey. Gina learns about Townsend’s shady past and uses it to convince Townsend to drop the charges. Gina asks Jett why he has been skipping school. Thurs: When Bianca fears the baby may be in danger, she rushes to the hospital. Xavier catches Jett running away just as Heath finds a dumped wallet. They realise it is Indi’s, and return it to her. Xavier suspects Jett stole it, but Gina is less sure. Romeo is struggling with his injured knee. Ruby tries to give him some hope by suggesting they go into a surfing business together. Indi borrows Sid’s car and crashes it. Fri: Bianca rushes to hospital worried about her baby. Sid reveals that the there are some complications and Bianca worries that her stress levels are the reason. Harvey’s court case is coming up and Roo convinces him to let Morag represent him. Morag tells him that his only chance is to plead guilty. When Indi tells Sid that she smashed his car, he explains that he will not bail her out this time.

Guide2012
It’s summer and the BBQ invites start coming thick and fast. But have you been invited to a Royal Garden Party this year? If you have, lucky you, however, if you’re like me and have never been invited then why not take your cue from Royalty and host your very own garden party. Every summer, the Queen hosts at least three parties at Buckingham Palace, as well as one at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. Over 8,000 people from all walks of life attend each of these parties. Now I know that most of us can’t compete with the Queen – My garden could probably hold 18 guests rather than 8,000. When it comes to invitees, it will probably be the same familiar faces that normally come to my plain old BBQs. So let’s all inject some excitement this year with the wow factor of fabulous perennials that flower in the garden year after year. This month we have a trio of garden lovelies that never fail to impress! Our first pick is Astilbe commonly known as False Goat’s Beard or False Spirea. Astilbes are very easy to grow and will reward you year after year with a reliable show of ornamental plume-like flowers in delicate hues of white, pink and red. The blooms are held high on erect stalks above clouds of foliage. Bonus benefits are the length of time they bloom and the fact that they are generally pest free. They grow well in shady areas and add interest and texture wherever they are planted. Plants to seek out are Astilbe ‘Fanal’ which produces dense panicles of dark crimson flowers or the intriguing Astilbe ‘Perkeo’ which produces pyramidal spires of pink flowers. Next on the guest list is Astrantia, not a particularly common plant in UK gardens although it should be! Its unusual looks
are characterised by densely packed flowers on oval bracts. This flower/bract configuration give the plant a star like quality – which seems to have influenced the name: Astrantia is said to originate from Astron, the Greek word for star. Look out for Astrantia ‘Sunningdale Variegated’, with its wonderful foliage or the pretty Astrantia major which produces green, pink or sometimes deep purple-red flowers. Our last guest is by no means the least… Geum is a versatile garden plant that loves the sun but can also thrive in partial shade. The flowers are most common in flame shades of fiery red, burnt orange and molten amber. The dark green foliage is covered in stiff hairs and the plants are very effective as bedding plants or when used in borders. Geum chiloense ‘Fire Opal’ is a stunning plant, producing reddish-orange flowers on purple stems. For rock gardens consider Geum montanum with its deep yellow flowers produced on short stems. Any garden party will be enhanced with these wonderful plants as part of the backdrop. Who cares if the guests aren’t the high and mighty of the land, as long as you enjoy their company? Have fun!

This year’s Chesterfield Canal Festival will be held on 30th June & 1st July from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Staveley Town Basin (S43 3XZ) and will be part of Staveley Feast. The Festival will be formally opened by The Duke of Devonshire at 10.30am on the Saturday. Attractions will include a canal boat/vintage bus/ steam train round tour in association with Barrow Hill Roundhouse which is a mile away. All three of the Chesterfield Canals Trust’s tripboats will be in action. Entertainment will include the Woodhouse Prize Band, Life & Times, Albert’s Skiffle Band, the New Orleans Strollers, Feet First, the Natterjacks, the
doing Water Rescues, canoeing, canoe water polo and the trust’s Volunteer Work Party building the new lock. Food and Drink by Brampton Brewery, North West Catering, Frederick’s Ice Cream, Mr Spud, Coffee Continental and Coconut Kitchen. Besides all of this there will be dozens of stalls. At the same time, Barrow Hill Roundhouse will be having Family Days with steam train rides. There will be connecting buses between the two events. There will be a major concert featuring The Swing Commanders on the Saturday night. Click here to buy tickets for this concert. To book boat trips to or from Hollingwood, ring
Urban Gypsies, the Sheffield Celebrated Clog Dancers, Brampton Community Band, Reelin' And A Rockin', the Pomegranate Youth Theatre and Springwell Community College Junior, Youth & Adult Choirs with thanks going to Markham Vale who have sponsored the Arts activities. Children’s activities will include Carlo the Clown, zorbing, Bungee trampolines, Santa Fe Train Ride, Mixed Toy Ride, Games Stall and Hook-a-Duck. Attractions will include Segway rides, a Steam Roller, the Raptor Foundation flying Birds of Prey, a Ropemaker, the Sheffield Ship Model Society, MG cars, Nicky Ward Art, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service
01246 477569. All boat trips cost £5, or £3 for concessions. There will be free parking nearby, or park at Hollingwood Hub and come by boat, or park at Barrow Hill Roundhouse and come by special bus. Entrance to the Festival will be £3, free for Under 12s. Buses 78 and 90 pass the site; 70, 74, 77, 80, 81 go very close. As it is on the isolated western stretch of the canal, it will essentially be a trailboat festival, but there will be the possibility of craning larger boats into the water. PETS
MICROCHIPPING MONTH June is National Microchipping Month, which aims to raise awareness of the benefits of getting pets microchipped. The most important animal welfare benefit is returning straying, injured and lost pets to their owners, and PDSA recommends microchipping as it is the most reliable way of permanently identifying a pet. Although dogs are still legally required to wear a collar and identity tag, these can easily be removed or get lost. Cats are not required to wear collars, and if they are not the ‘quick-release’ type, collars can actually cause severe injuries to cats. Vets strongly recommend microchipping, and compulsory microchipping for dogs is currently being discussed by the English and Welsh Governments, following on from the introduction of compulsory microchipping in Northern Ireland earlier this year. In the meantime, however, 30% of dogs and 54% of cats are still not microchipped*, so Sean Wensley, PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, addresses some of the most common reasons owners give for not microchipping their pets. I’m worried it will hurt my pet A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is injected into the loose skin between the shoulder blades. It is a very quick, harmless procedure, similar to a routine vaccination. Once inserted, the pet won’t feel the microchip at all. It’s too expensive The cost of getting a microchip varies from around £15 to £20, but this is a cost that any responsible pet owner should plan for when choosing to take on a pet. It is also a negligible cost when considering the lifetime cost of owning a dog (estimated at £16,000 to £31,000*) Ask your vet about the cost, but also check other local services such as charities, councils and dog wardens, as they sometimes hold special events offering free or discounted microchipping. The cost of getting your pet microchipped is a small amount to pay for peace of mind for your pet’s safety and wellbeing.
My pet doesn’t need a microchip Despite the best of care, the worst can sometimes happen – your dog chases Open 5 Days a Week,Closed Thursdays & Sundays something and disappears through a hole TEL: 07950421704 in a hedge and runs off, or your cat is out one night and is involved in an accident. Without a microchip, the chances of SKIPS being reunited with a lost pet are greatly reduced. Nearly all vets, charities, police forces and animal shelters now have scanners, and when an unknown pet is brought in, the first thing they will do is scan for a microchip. If a chip is detected, this gives them a unique reference number that SKIPS AVAILABLE allows them to quickly access a database MINI SKIPS, 3 TON, containing the owner’s contact details. A microchip can mean the difference 4 TON, 6 TON, between your pet being permanently lost 8 TON (SOIL, BRICK, and a happy reunion. RUBBLE/WOOD/MIXED) Sean adds: “An important point to remember is that the owner is responsible 16 YARD (WOOD) for keeping the database up to date, so if your details have changed it is essential to contact your vet or the organisation that provided the chip.”

I have an easy job to write this week’s column as I’ve had a splendid day of fly fishing on a local venue which is a joy to share with you. David Smith recently invited me to the open day at Ladybower Fishery in Bamford, to show me a little more of what the intentions are with regards to development of this already established fishery. After our initial discussions, it was suggested that I partake of a day of fly fishing in the company of England Ladies Team Manager Paul Sissons and England Fly Tyer and consultant Steve Newsome.....I didn’t need asking twice! After we had finally managed to sort out an appropriate date, I asked Gary Newman of Anglers Mail magazine if he fancied joining us for his ‘Weekly Adventure’ feature to help me highlight just what is on offer at Ladybower; the four of us met bright and early at the fishery to plan the day. It was decided that as complete fly angling novices, (neither Gary or myself had fly fished for over thirty years!) that Steve would accompany me, and Paul would show Gary the ropes, so we set off in the fisheries own boats to sample the sport on offer. David had kindly set me up with a White Tadpole imitation before we set off which was duly thrashed out as best I could before Steve passed on his wisdom to allow me to cast with a modicum of subtlety. I could see Gary having similar issues in the adjacent boat, but again, with some gentle coercing from Paul, a decent cast was soon in evidence and Gary presented his fly in a likely area... Steve explained all about setting the correct drift with the aid of the drogue, how the weather would affect the chances of success (apparently, bright sunshine and high temperatures were not particularly conducive to good sport) where the trout were likely to be found and what else to look for during our first hour, and also regaled me with tales of England Team events which was absorbing and a great way to spend time whilst seeking our quarry. After our first couple of drifts, I felt a sharp pluck on my fly and proceeded to reel in my first ever fly caught trout! At just about a pound in weight, it was quickly unhooked and returned to fight again, but it left me very happy! The weather wasn’t doing us any favours, and it was sometime before I got lucky again; this time fishing an area known as Middle Brook, I latched into another fish of a similar weight which was again returned unharmed. Paul and Gary were in the same area and delightfully told us they had also caught fish but they were finding it tough too; in fact Gary hadn’t had a sniff although Paul had boated a small brace and lost a couple. As the day drew on, it was soon time to consider getting back alongside to take the required photographs for Gary’s weekly feature; a final drift saw me hook something bigger which tore off into the depths! After what seemed an age, a stunning 3lbs rainbow lay nestled in the net to make a trio of lovely Ladybower fish for me; Paul had also bagged three fish, Gary had sadly not caught, and Paul spent too much time helping me to bother with fishing! It was a day of great fun, great fishing and we made great friends; if you fancy wetting a fly line, then get in touch with David at Ladybower to find out more about fishing, tuition and prices; it really is a great day out! I’d like to add a huge thank you from me to all who made it possible. www.ladybowerfisheries.co.uk

I cannot say that this weekend’s racing fills me with anticipation as the main races look to be some devilishly tricky handicaps where the ground holds the key to many horses’ chances and to make things more difficult many have entries in several races. There are four races from Newmarket, two from Doncaster and two from Chester scheduled to be shown on Channel 4. Newmarket: 2.20 Fly London Southend to Ibiza Handicap, Class 3, 3yo, 0-90, 1m: With a maximum of 16 set to take part this could yet cut up quite badly. To complicate things further there are plenty of unexposed types in the race, several of whom had winning form last time out. Those that recorded pretty fair speed figures last time out include: Asifa; Falcon in Flight; Farang Kondiew; Mayo Lad; Nelson’s Bay; and Shot in the Dark. Of the others Lelaps and Juvenal have good ratings in the book. Nelson’s Bay is a very tentative choice in a wide open affair. Handicap, 2.55 Fly London Southend to Barcelona Handicap Class 2, 3yo+, 0-105, 6f: This is another one where over half the current entries must drop out to get down to the maximum 16 runners. King of Jazz earns the vote from his third place in the Ascot Victoria Cup which was run in a good time and may throw up a fair few winners yet. Tax Free ran well last time and seems to be running himself into form but the Nicholls’ stable overall recent form is a slight concern so the reserve selection goes to Albaqaa who also ran well last time. Colonel Mak and Piazza San Pietro are two others that must enter calculations. 3.30 Fly London Southend to Dublin Levy Board Handicap, Class 2, 4yo+, 0-105, 1m 4f: The shortlist for this race comprises: Eternal Heart; Classic

Vintage; High Jinx; War Poet; Little Rocky; Ermyn Lodge; Borug; Mulaqen; and Albaraka. Preference is for top weight Eternal Heart whose Chester Cup effort may yet be shown in a very good light. He may have most to fear from the hat trick seeking War Poet, Classic Vintage and High Jinx. 4.00 Fly London Southend to Faro Handicap, Class 3, 4yo+, 0-95, 1m 2f: In the hope that he turns up in this race and not one of the several others for which he is entered Little Rocky gets the call ahead of Tornado Force, Fattsota, Camberley Two and Stand to Reason. Licence to Till, Mountain Range, Shavansky, Dragonera and Borug are others that could prove troublesome to the selection. Donacaster: 2.05 Freebets.co.uk Handicap, Class 2, 3yo, 0-105, 1m: My four against the rest are: Mukhadram; Mawasem; Faklcon in Flight; and Nameitwhatyoulike with the selection going to Mukhadram who could yet turn out to be quite good. Mawasem is feared most on good ground but if it turned soft Nameitwhatyoulike would be a big threat. 3.45 Freebets.co.uk Free Bets Handicap, Class 2, 4yo+, 0-105, 7f: I am again going to turn to the form of the Victoria Cup for the selection here and like the chances of Tariq Too who has a quite decent 7lb claiming apprentice on board and could go well at decent odds. Escape to Glory may prove to be his main rival although others that could go close are: Fathsta; Lord Aeryn; Imperial Djay; Dubai Hills; No Poppy; and New Leyf. Chester: 2.35 Willow Water Handicap, Class 2, 3yo+, 0-105, 7f 122yds: Powerful Presence may be able to land the four-timer as he has been in such good form of late. Old favourites Pintura and Kyllachy Star can test his mettle however with Bay Knight, Osteopathic Remedy and Viva Ronaldo also looking capable of big runs. 3.10 John Halewood Memorial Handicap, Class 2, 4yo+, 0-105, 1m 2f 75yds: Course and distance winner Oceanway has my top rating but very soft going seems to be imperative for him to show his best and he is therefore passed over in favour of the hat trick seeking War Poet, who gets a narrow vote over his fellow hat trick seeker Landaman. Of the others Memory Cloth and Pravda Street also rate highly as considerable dangers. Good Luck!

Sheffield Wednesday are delighted to report that a massive 20 per cent of Season Tickets sold for the 2012-13 campaign have been to new purchasers. As Season Tickets sold head rapidly to the 13,000-mark, the Owls will welcome at least 2,500 new holders for what promises to be an exciting Championship campaign. Overall, the club have already exceeded last term’s Season Ticket tally - with more than two months still to go before the big kick-off in August. Almost 10,000 Owls fans committed to buying their Season Tickets during the Early Bird renewal period at the beginning of the year and following promotion, Wednesday have experienced huge demand for next term. SWFC chairman Milan Mandaric said: “There is a huge feelgood factor around this club at the moment. One chapter has closed and now another one begins. “We need as many people on board for what I am sure will be another incredible season at Sheffield Wednesday.” Remember, buying a Season Ticket not only

DOCTOR ON CALL SUPPORTERS SNAP Sheffield Wednesday’s club doctor Richard Higgins has received an international call-up and will represent team GB at the summer Olympics. Dr Higgins has worked with the England Under-21s for two years and has got the nod from Stuart Pearce for the Olympics, which will be held in London in July and August. He said: “Working with England is a great honour, and to be chosen for the Olympic job is a huge honour. “Potentially we have some high profile, experienced players in the team and some up-and-coming players, and potentially a great squad that could definitely be in with a chance of winning it.”

Rotherham United striker Lewis Grabban has agreed terms to join League One club AFC Bournemouth. The forward netted 18 league goals for the Millers last season topping the scoring charts in the process, but after talks with Crawley Town broke down last week, Grabban sealed a move for an undisclosed fee today. “It goes without saying that on behalf of everyone at Rotherham United, we’d like to wish Lewis every success in his time at AFC Bournemouth,” said manager Steve Evans. “Those people that know me will know that I speak my mind, and I can say very genuinely that Lewis conducted himself in an excellent manner in the short time I worked with him. “He will be difficult to replace as there are not too many wide players who scored 18 goals last season. However, we will do our best to fill that gap.” Despite losing Grabban, Evans continues to concentrate on recruitment for his current playing squad ahead of the new season. “Our aim next season is to win promotion, and that is the only focus everybody at Rotherham United now has. I was in the club shop earlier today, it was a very busy place and the supporters banter was brilliant. “I am driving home this evening with a real buzz; this is going to be a crucial week in respect of our player recruitment, it is essential we get this right if we are to enjoy the season ahead.”

UP NEW SHIRT BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Since the home kit was launched, demand for the new shirt has been huge. Feedback on the shirt has been encouraging with many enjoying the new design, which is based on a kit which was first worn in the 1977-78 season, by the likes of Alex Sabella, Alan Woodward, Mick Speight and Keith Edwards. It is very similar in design with the United badge central on the shirt and black lines separating the red and white stripes. Lisa Crossland, United’s Retail and Sales Manager, commented: “We have had an amazing response to this new shirt, fans were queuing outside the store on the day on the launch and fans looked great in it at Wembley. We are delighted that we have been able to sell the shirt before fans head off on their summer holidays.” The Blades Superstore and SUFC Direct are stocking shirts but only limited sizes are now available until a second batch arrives. www.sufcdirect.co.uk
Doncaster Rovers are requesting that all Rovers fans attend a ‘free-to-attend’ club meeting on Monday 18th June at Keepmoat Stadium. In an exciting event, Rovers Chairman John Ryan plus other major shareholders will be in attendance giving all Rovers fans the opportunity to discuss the club, the plans to rebuild the first team for next season and the commercial and community projects that are being planned for the future. Despite a difficult twelve months the future is looking bright for Doncaster Rovers with several changes taking place behind the scenes at the club. One of the most notable changes is the plan for the management of Keepmoat Stadium to be transferred to Rovers control in July. The club meeting will give fans the opportunity to ask questions on what this decision means for the club moving forward and the impact this decision will have on the club’s playing budget. Chairman John Ryan will also field questions relating to investment in the playing squad and how Doncaster Rovers will be looking to rebuild for the 2012/13 season and once again move back up the football league. As part of the meeting the club will also be revealing some of the results from their major fan engagement project, In Rovers We Trust, which has seen over 800 fans take part in an online survey explaining what the club means to them and how match days at Doncaster Rovers can be improved. The club meeting will be held in the East Stand at Keepmoat Stadium on Monday 18th June starting at 6.15pm. A ticket will be needed to gain entry into the event, tickets are free and available from the Keepmoat Stadium Ticket office from Wednesday 6th June.
