CHILDRENʼS FESTIVAL THINKS OUTSIDE THE BOX M.V. MOBILITY Sheffield Children’s Festival is the largest festival of its kind in the UK. Children across Sheffield are to show off their creative talents. A major event in Sheffield’s cultural calendar, the Children’s Festival will be packed full of fun activities during June and July. The festival continues to build on its own success. Last year saw over 30,000 children, young people, parents and carers take part in the festival. The programme for this year’s events is out now and people across the city and beyond are encouraged to see what is in store and get involved. Cllr Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council said: “The Children’s Festival is all about getting involved. Not just the children who are performing or showcasing their work but parents, carers, families, everyone in the city. “The festival works on many levels so families, parents and siblings can get involved too. For over 20 years the Children’s Festival has been giving children a chance to get involved in the arts. Over the years well over a quarter of a million children, young people and families have

taken part in Sheffield Children’s Festival. That is a staggering number of people so pick up a programme and make sure you find out what all the fuss is about.” The festival runs from Monday 18 June until Saturday 14 July 2012 and includes exhibitions, performances, workshops and family events at venues across the city. Schools have already been busy rehearsing and creating artwork in preparation. The festival kicks off with Camp Cardboard which will see children building houses, dens, streets, telephones, cars, horses, just about anything out of cardboard. Schools across the city have already made their ideas a reality and now families can join in the fun at the Winter Garden on Saturday 23 June. Sheffield Children’s Festival gets children working with professional artists and performers and showcases their creative talents. The combination of this, and having their work showcased inspires Sheffield children, giving memorable experiences, raising confidence and aspirations. This year’s festival is being sponsored yet again

by VINCI Construction UK. Regional Director Keith Shivers said: “It is an honour for VINCI Construction UK to support Sheffield Children’s Festival, the largest in the country. We have a genuine interest in education in the city and as well as our successful partnership with Sheffield City Council on the transformational Building Schools for the Future programme it is great to support the stars of the future too. There is so much going on in the city and the Children’s Festival provides yet another way for families to get involved.” The festival’s family programme is funded by Arts Council England. The festival programme is out now and available at your local library, children’s play centres, shops, cafes, theatres, the Winter Garden and venues across the city or you can find it online at www. sheffieldchildrensfestival. org You can also follow the festival on Twitter for updates @ChildrensFest or follow #sheffculture for updates on all things cultural in the city.

Weekly Articles, Puzzles, Competitions, Entertainment & Much More

Copley’s Column

A new hero has emerged in my home town of Dronfield this week in the shape of Victoria Inn owner, Chris Snell, who was asleep alone in his bed at 6 am on the morning after the bank holiday and was rudely awakened by a shadowy figure wearing a balaclava and wielding a hammer asking him where his safe was, having already helped himself to eight hundred pounds. Whilst most of us would have been in desperate need of diocalm, our hero sat up bolt upright in bed, confronting the intruder. Seeing the spectacle of Chris, a pretty big chap, with no clothes on was enough to petrify the robber and he took to his heels. I am pleased to report that security has been upgraded in the pub and this will ensure that this unsavoury incident will never be repeated. It is not often I get the opportunity to salute a hero known to me personally and I take the opportunity to heap praise on this great guy and pillar of the community. To reward him in some way I should mention that there are great drinks deals to be had between four and seven in the early bar time with as much as thirty pence a pint off beers and lager. His sandwiches are legendary, you will never get better. My sincere apologies go out to the lovely Kim Sargant Eastwood, half of top duo G String for not reporting on a charity night in which she was involved before now. When I was first made aware of it, I was on holiday, but did pick it up whilst I was playing catch up on my return. I did intend to put it in last week, but was unable to due to lack of space, but am pleased to set the record straight this week. The event was held on the 25th April at the Wales Jubilee Club in memory of Karl Barton with the proceeds going to Sheffield Children’s Hospital The artistes performing on the night, completely

free of charge, were G String, Electric Dreams and Lee Michaels, and the show was compered by J.P.Morris, better known as Paul from legendary duo, Star Star. The event raised £1580, greatly enhanced by a generous contribution of £600 from Wales Jubilee Club, which was a magnificent gesture. The photograph depicts from left to right J.P.Morris, Cheryl Ridge from Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Shaun Wright, the mayor of Rotherham. Another charity event I have been asked to mention occurs on the 26th July. This is a charity football match between Dronfield Miners and Old School Vic whose players are the older members from the Victoria pub. I am perplexed that I have not been invited to keep goal for them, but take comfort from the fact that they were probably aware that at this time I shall be sunning myself on a family holiday on Majorca. The match kicks off at noon and after the game there will be some fabulous entertainment in the Miner’s Arms car park, with some great bands and artistes promising to appear. I well remember attending this annual event last year when over five thousand pounds was raised. If it is as good this year, then this is a must attend event.

CHERYL

Earlier this week Cheryl announces her first solo nationwide arena tour. With dates up and down the UK, the announcement comes as her latest single looks set to top the charts this week. Cheryl ‘A Million Lights’ Tour will be stopping off at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on Tuesday 9th October. Tickets priced £35 (booking fee may apply) go on sale Friday 15th June at 9am. Cheryl released her new single Call My Name this week which went straight to #1 within hours of release on iTunes, clocking up record breaking sales. Cheryl will be performing songs from all three albums on the tour as well as some surprises. Although this will be Cheryl’s first headline arena tour, she is certainly no stranger to the live circuit. She opened as special guest on the Black Eyed Peas European tour in 2010 and also played four sold-out arena tours as part of Girls Aloud. Tickets for Cheryl ‘A Million Lights’ Tour at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield go on sale Friday 15th June 9am, priced £35 (booking fee may apply). Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS

Passengers aboard a luxurious cruise ship were having a great time when a beautiful young woman fell overboard. Immediately there was an 80-year-old man in the water who rescued her. The crew pulled them both out of the treacherous waters. The captain was grateful as well as astonished that the white-haired old man performed such an act of bravery. That night a banquet was given in honor of the ship’s elderly hero. He was called forward to receive an award and was asked to say a few words. He said, “First of all, I’d like to know who pushed me.” A musical director was having a lot of trouble with one drummer. He talked and talked and talked with the drummer, but his performance simply didn’t improve. Finally, before the whole orchestra, he said, “When a musician just can’t handle his instrument and doesn’t improve when given help, they take away the instrument, and give him two sticks, and make him a drummer.” A voice was heard from the percussion section: “And if he can’t handle even that, they take away one of his sticks and make him a conductor.”

PSYCHIC EVENT

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

The Saints This week we look at Andrew, David, George and Jude. Have you ever wondered how the Saints got their Sainthood? I have often thought about this so I have chosen the next two weeks’ articles to look at how eight of them in particular became Saints. St Andrew of Scotland St Andrew is the patron saint of fishermen. He was a disciple of John the Baptist and associated with St Andrews Cross. At his own request he deemed himself unworthy to be crucified on the same cross of Jesus. He was crucified on an X shaped cross. The flag of Scotland bears the X shaped cross as it`s emblem in acknowledgement. The feast day for St Andrew is 30th November.

St David of Wales St David of Wales was a monk and a bishop of the 6th century. St David is usually depicted in episcopal vestments, standing on a mound with a dove at his shoulder. The custom of Welshmen wearing leeks or daffodils on St David’s Day is described by Shakespeare as “ an ancient tradition” . St George of England The story of St George and the Dragon is by no means unique in folklore, but this verson became immensely popular. According to legend a dragon terrorized the whole country with its fiery poisoned breath - if you were caught in the poisoned breath it was fatal. The dragon was appeased with an offering of two sheep, but when they grew scarce a human victim was chosen. The King’s daughter was chosen and was dressed as a bride for the offering. St George asked the people tobelieve in Jesus Christ and in return for their faith he would slay the dragon. The King agreed - 15,000 men were baptised, and St George killed the dragon. St Jude This particular Saint has caught my eye in a local paper. People give thanks to St Jude who apparently is a miracle worker.St Jude was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus and is sometimes known as James. He is the Saint of hopeless cases. I wonder if that is why people give him thanks for helping those who have passed over, or someone who is unable to cope with life or a severe illness. In such cases getting back to some kind of normality or being cured is indeed a miracle. To book a psychic reading please call 07811632353 or visit my website www.psychicglynis.com

SWFC ENJOY SOCCER CAMP SUCCESS Sheffield Wednesday is celebrating a successful halfterm of soccer camps with more children than ever before joining the football sessions. More than 200 youngsters per day attended the Spring Bank Soccer Camp, which was organised and hosted by trained coaches from the club's Community Programme. The sessions, which took place at the Owls training ground, saw kids aged between 5 and 14 enjoy the opportunity to further their football skills while benefiting from a whole lot of exercise. Nine-year-old Owls supporter Bradley Sinclair enjoyed attending the three-day camp along with younger brother Ben. He said: "I thought it was brilliant and so did my brother because

it gave us something fun to do in the school holidays. We have both made lots of new friends and I think I am a lot better player because of the things the coaches taught me." As an extra treat the kids became stars of the small screen when Sky Sports News broadcast live from the camp as part of their 'Get Involved' week promoting grassroots sport across the UK. Community manager Marcus Brameld said: "I am extremely pleased that our Spring Bank Camp proved so popular with a record number of kids joining us this half-term." It was also great to have Sky Sports News in attendance allowing

us to show showcase the high quality coaching and engaging activities we have on offer as well as raising the profile of our camps." For information on future Sheffield Wednesday Soccer Camps please contact the Community Programme on: 0114 221 2215 or email community@ swfc.co.uk

EXPLOSION OF COLOURS

Musical theatre buffs will know, but for those of you who don’t, this line comes from a song entitled June is Bustin’ Out All Over! from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel. This piece of musical history is set in Maine, USA and the song refers the stirring and thrilling arrival of summer in June. Of course it doesn’t always happen that way, Summer these days seems to begin and end in April! But when it does, the effect on everyone is palpable. The explosion of colour andscent from the flowers and plants in your garden can be a very pleasant assault on the senses and combined with the sunshine, will give a lift to even your dreariest mood! Geranium or Cranesbill A plant with definite mood enhancing properties is the Geranium or Cranesbill. This group of plants is large and varied and they are often seen as bedding plants or houseplants. However, perennial geraniums are a wonderful addition to the summer garden producing fabulous flowers in large quantities and what’s more, they are quick to establish, and with limited maintenance they will keep their vigour for years – perfect for a busy gardener. Sorts of Geraniums Geraniums are infinitely versatile. The smaller hardy Geraniums are great in rock gardens, pots and hanging baskets or at the front of borders. They can also make handy ground cover plants. Take a look at our selection – pick and choose or try them

all! Geranium ‘Ann Folkard’ produces pretty, magenta coloured flowers with black centres from mid-summer to mid-autumn. If space allows, it can reach a spread of 1m or more. Geranium clarkei ‘Kashmir white’ produces delicate, refined, saucer shaped white flowers to 4cm across from early to late summer. For bright pink, trumpet shaped flowers right through from early summer to early autumn, go for Geranium endressii. Flowers on this cluster forming plant are 3-4cm across and have an iridescent silvery sheen to them. For a burst of midsummer colour try Geranium X magnificum, a gem which produces rich violet flowers to 5cm across. One special Geranium to look out for is ‘Rozanne’ – it was chosen as perennial of the year a couple of years ago by the Perenial Plant Organisation and with good reason as it is an absolute jewel. It flowers non-stop through the growing season producing large violet blooms with delicate pale centres and dark, marbled foliage. This selection is made up of fully hardy plants. Heights range from 45 to 75cm and spread is generally about 60cm. In terms of maintenance, cut back summer’s growth in autumn to encourage next year’s growth. Splitting clusters every two or three years will also help to reinvigorate your chosen plants. Seasonal stars of gardens Perennials like geraniums are the seasonal stars of gardens all around the country at the moment. They add bold splashes of colour and fun wherever you make space for them. Make sure you see June ‘Bustin’ out of your garden, plant some geraniums today!

Faye, Tom, Paul & Angie Welcome you to HAVE SLIMMER SUMMER DAYS AND SUMMER NIGHTS! The Heeley & Sheffield

Research shows that almost one third of people put on weight in the summer – up to half a stone – and with temptations like holidays, picnics and barbecues it’s easy to see why. The fabulous Slimming World Consultants in Sheffield say that making the most of the warmer weather, at home or abroad, doesn’t have to result in excess baggage. In fact Slimming World helps slimmers enjoy every event summer brings their way, and still lose weight beautifully. Donna, who runs a Slimming World group in Mosborough, says: “When you’re trying to slim down summer can be a very challenging time, with parties, picnics, and sporting events like the Olympics, Euro 2012 and barbecues on top of holidays away. It’s no wonder that nearly a third of us gain weight during this season. But you don’t have to miss out on having fun, because with just a few small changes to the way you shop, cook and eat you can rise to the challenge and have a great summer too. Best of all, you may even find you’re a

dress size or two smaller come the autumn! “Slimming World’s Extra Easy plan is the perfect companion for slimmers this summer. It’s filling free food creates a whole host of delicious recipes that cater for all occasions so you really can be ready for anything. Whether you’re planning an al-fresco dinner with friends, grilling up a bumper barbecue, heading out on a picnic or just looking for a simple summer supper, you’ll find the perfect dish. They taste so good no one will believe you when you tell them they’re kind to the waistline too.” Slimming World’s famous Food Optimising eating plans are all nutritionally balanced, based on banishing hunger and satisfying even the healthiest of appetites. Food Optimising encourages slimmers to enjoy unlimited amounts of everyday foods like fruit and vegetables, rice, pasta, potatoes, fish and lean meat, which are filling while also being naturally low in calories. Extra Easy Summer Days are a feast for your eyes as well as your stomach because they can be packed full of fresh ingredients like berries, asparagus, salmon, chicken and pork,” says Donna. “Lots of delicious healthy foods are in season at this time of year meaning they’re easy to get hold of and great value, and the warmer weather gets you outside and active which boosts your weight loss and your mood. When you combine this with the inspiration, motivation and friendly support that members get any Slimming World group that’s a powerful weight loss package that’s hard to beat. So while summer brings many hurdles that could get in the way of a slimmer’s success, with all the right tools summer can be one of the best times to lose weight. A comment echoed by Slimming World’s two latest recruits Lindsay who is opening the Abbeydale Group and Kita the Crystal Peaks group. To find your local group visit www.slimmingworld.com or call 0844 897 8000 a warm welcome guaranteed.

CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

Sunday June 10th is a date I’ve had in my diary for many months. The planned visit to the grave of CIU founder Henry Solly in the small Oxfordshire village of Childrey was like a pilgrimage to a club historian like me, especially on this special occasion: June 14th is the day the Working Men’s Club and Institute Union formally came into being. Without Solly’s vision and tireless efforts, there would have been no CIU and the working men’s club movement would have faltered. We might have had several hundred clubs scattered across the country, of course. But they would not have been part of a national, united movement that through collective action supported men not only in their efforts to establish their own leisure spaces but offered assistance in many other ways. What better way to pay my respects to him than visiting the peaceful spot where RADIO NIGHTINGALE he was laid to rest in 1903, at by Mel Jaques the grand old age of 90. BIFFY CLYRO @ DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL

live REVIEW

Words by Katy Evans

Biffy Clyro always seem to get a particularly mixed reaction when they’re announced as performer at heavy rock and metal festivals. Sonisphere 2011 saw the band headline the main stage which needless to say was hit with a mixed reaction…but hey Slipknot and Biffy on the same bill was always going to stir up animosity. Letting this not hinder their performance at Download, no question the biggest festival in rock throughout this year, the three piece took to the stage like any seasoned professional would to serve up arguably one of the best sets of the event. It’s a difficult ask to attempt to place Biffy Clyro within the current musical spectrum. A band who have peaked at the top of the charts with their fifth studio album ‘Only Revolutions,’ along with the (say in hushed tones) X Factor song knock-off, the trio are more main stream than the majority of bands scheduled throughout the festival however still remain largely a punk rock pack. Combining together the traditional fast paced, spikey riffage of bands The Buzzcocks and Ramones, Biffy Clyro seemed only to hold their own throughout their hour long performance on the main Kerrang / BBC Radio 1 main stage. With a turn-out of over sixty thousand viewers, the set was smashed open with ‘The Captain,’ a poignant tip of the hat to fans who bought the bands most successful album to date, making Scotland’s finest exports now one of the worlds most treasured live bands. Unlike the typical warm-up act to a main headlining band, Biffy Clyro are anything but your traditional supporter. Since the formation onto the rock circuit in 2002, Biffy Clyro have won a collection of prestigious awards along with countless nominations to secure them into the rock ‘n’ roll hall of international fame. To therefore call them a support band is totally out-doing the success of such an influential band as Biffy Clyro who could quite easily headline any rockers festival and do a bloody good job of it too. Performing a littering of punk infused belters across all of the bands five hugely celebrated studio albums, a highlight of the set came with the performance of melodic anthemic belter ‘Many Of Horror.’ Ok ok so call us soppy buggers, but to combine Simon Neil’s pleading vocals alongside anthemic chorus lines is needless to say the pinnacle of the bands writing ability. Following on from this, the group went onto perform ‘Shock Shock’ and ‘Bubbles,’ emphasising the brute force of ‘Only Revolutions,’ easily the bands most prolific album to date. Concluding with ‘Boom Blast & Ruin,’ the colossal energy and passion omitted by the trio projected them as a more than easy highlight of the entire weekend…but Simon mate, white trousers just aren’t appropriate at a festival yeah?!

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL DONNINGTON PARK

REVIEW Words by Katy Evans

All hail the mighty force of Download festival 2012…after a week of torrential downpours and winter-esque temperatures, Donnington Park was transformed into rock mecca to deliver a welldeserved rest-bite of classically brutal belters to bring the sun out into everyone’s weekend. With the headlining acts as The Prodigy, Metallica and the return of Black Sabbath with its fully original line up intact, one hundred thousand festival attendees were served the very pinnacle of the alternative genres legendary bands and acts throughout the entire summer rockers circuit… Download we salute you! Weather. It can either make or break an outdoor event, particularly when soggy grass and pop-up tents play a major involvement. However, although Download dished out its fair share of welly-covering sludge paths, this really didn’t have an effect on the huge success of such an anticipated weekend. The festival itself spreads out over four stages with the headliners gracing the main Kerrang / Radio1 stage. This didn’t mean to suggest that the most talented bands were to be selected upon stage one…the stand out award for the first day goes to Sheffield hardcore piece While She Sleeps. Having been voted best British newcomer at the Kerrang awards the day before, WSS captured the crowds on the Pepsi Max Stage with fierce mosh pits, shattering baseline melodies and massive riffs to succumb to one hell of a head-bangover. With their debut album to be released this summer, WSS are to be Sheffield’s next biggest export. Performing under the mighty Metallica, one of a staple selection of super band headliners, Biffy Clyro seemed not to be phased by such a huge mountain. Opening up their hour long set with ‘The Captain,’ the band drew together many different attendees musical tastes with their heavily punk influenced tracks to suggest one of the best performances of the second day. Taking on his Godly like stature with head-to-toe white garments, lead vocalist Simon Neil’s Scottish twang carried as much force and power as any world-wide dominating group and hell, they sure know how to deliver a forceful alternative punch. Following on from Biffy Clyro to conclude the second day, Metallica. Although undoubtedly rock’s most prolific live bands, it all seemed a little too predictable…with fresh new talents as Black Veil Brides, Kids In Glass Houses and You Me At Six all emerging onto the international stages of rock, their set seemed a tad on the old-fashioned side. Metallica though…come on. Sunday 10th June saw the return of rock’s most X-Rated super groups Black Sabbath return with its full line-up. Contrary to popular belief, Ozzy still commands the main stage with his trademark pleading vocals and captivating onstage persona. Performing belters ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Evil Woman,’ the closing track of the entire weekend was granted to one of Sabbath’s most influential screamers ‘Paranoid.’ Spitting out sky engulfing fireworks to salute the weekend, Download 2012 really could not have put on a more enticing weekend of rock galore. Keep your eyes peeled for 2013’s line-up (if we survive the zombie apocalypse) at www. downloadfestival.co.uk

Big Brother is back, and it’s the show that sees more nutters in one place than an England supporter’s pub crawl (I jest, I jest). This year’s house is jam packed with crazies of all shapes and sizes (hide the sharp objects and don’t give them any sugar) and while they all seem almost “normal” on the surface, there hasn’t been this many arguments over a sausage since the Island of the Lesbian Amazons captured their first male castaway back in 1942. That poor man. That poor, poor man… Big Brother is essential viewing if you like almosthuman people watching, but if you’re not into what is essentially a bunch of post-teens partying, behaving inappropriately, and drinking a lot… you probably should give nightclubbing in Rotherham a miss. Prime Minister, David Cameron, was in the news this week for leaving his daughter, Nancy, in a pub after he and his wife went out for a “quiet meal”. This should come as no surprise to anyone… it’s hardly the first time a Tory backbencher has dumped his wife to pick up a nancy in a bar… A bit of a shout out now to the Penistone Paramount cinema this week, and while ‘Penistone Paramount’ is almost an innuendo in itself, the Council-run cinema is a fantastic place to watch a movie. People moan endlessly about the big cinema complexes that they’re overrun with rude and ignorant people who talk through the movie, a sea of brightly lit mobile phones, and general bad attitude that ruins the whole experience, but there’s none of that at the Paramount, which even has an intermission so you can purchase some of their delicious ice cream, popcorn, or a bevvy from their fully licensed bar… Local cinema is dying and the Paramount deserves our support. You can find out more at: http://www.penistoneparamount.co.uk/

My good deed done, I’ve got about one hundred words left to slag off positively discuss some celebrity or other, and top of the list is the supremely “talented” Cheryl Cole, who has recently announced an eight date Arena tour around the UK. I’m not normally one for negativity (no really) but please God, if you have any mercy, let this show die a death. Actually, God, if you’re taking requests, why stop there? It was bad enough Arlene Phillips saying Cole could be the world’s best dancer after her new video, did you SEE her dancing? It was only by cutting the video to death that she didn’t look like she wasn’t having some kind of seizure… But it’s not just the footage of Cole “dancing” that I’d like to have cut to pieces… Still, we can live in hope… In other news, Cole offered herself on a plate to Prince Harry in a recent interview, asking the still single royal to “call her”. Which would suit all parties, as Harry was only talking the other day about how much he really wanted a dog. More news next week!

WOODWARD LAKES AND LODGES – A PARK IS LAUNCHED… On Friday 4th May, at 2.30pm world renowned botanist, author, broadcaster and environmental campaigner, Professor David Bellamy OBE, officially opened Woodward lakes and lodges Holiday Park. Located in a peaceful, tranquil setting close to the Viking built village of Armthorpe in South Yorkshire, Woodward lakes and lodges is a magnificent 300 acre £20 million lodge park development incorporating luxury, individually designed, bespoke wooden lodges styled to give the ultimate comfort and lifestyle in beautiful surroundings and is the legacy of John Woodward OBE, founder of Blue Anchor Leisure Limited and owner of many private Holiday Parks and Resorts along the Lincolnshire coast. David Bellamy along with his wife, Rosemary, toured the entire park throughout the afternoon, inspecting all areas and giving particular attention to the conservation work undertaken to preserve, protect and encourage wildlife. Both were extremely impressed with the creation of new habitats and special areas for all the wildlife species and marvelled the landscaping, open grassland, extensive tree planting and stunning lakes. Discussing the importance of ecology on the park, Professor Bellamy praised the park for its forethought and applauded the care and sensitivity given to its natural environment. A special Tree Planting Ceremony took place when children from Southfield Primary School assisted David Bellamy with the planting of a Weeping Willow to celebrate the opening of the Park and to commemorate the late John Woodward. The Weeping Willow will serve to remember a man who was awarded the OBE not only in recognition for his contribution to tourism but for his generosity, dedication and commitment to the charitable work and efforts he gave to research for children with Leukaemia and for his fundraising for the Outward Bound Trust. An unexpected visit of students from the Hayfield Social Education Centre provided another special moment for a collaborative photograph with David Bellamy before the ribbon cutting event at the Park Entrance. Director of Blue Anchor Leisure Limited

Jonathan Moses accompanied by Contracts Manager Ray Chapman joined Professor Bellamy to cut the ribbon and officially open the Park. Congratulating the owners on such a remarkable achievement the Professor commended Woodward lakes and lodges for its uniqueness and truly inspired lifestyle in harmony with the natural surroundings and wished the park a prosperous, successful future promising to return and visit whenever possible to see its progress and development. A terrific number of invited guests, members of the public and interested, prospective customers attended the event on Friday which continued until late afternoon on Bank Holiday Monday. Local Residents and Councillors inspected the luxurious log cabins and examined the surrounding lakes and grass land. Sales Manager, Julie Lench is delighted with the success of the launch event which produced many enquiries for holiday home ownership on the Park and deposits were taken for specific lodges and appointments for design arrangements were made. Woodward lakes and lodges is working in close association with WH Brown through several of its offices in the South Yorkshire area who are now busy arranging valuations and helping with the sales process. Woodward lakes and lodges offers an exclusive luxury lifestyle in a peaceful, tranquil setting and is a modern holiday park sculpted from the South Yorkshire landscape. With natural beauty, exquisite nature trails, access to wildlife and spectacular scenery, the park features an impressive 40 acre lake fully stocked with specimen Bream, Carp, Tench, Roach and other species, a 9 hole Golf Course, Bowling Green, Tennis Courts and off road Cycle Routes. Woodward lakes and lodges is a great place to unwind and the perfect Yorkshire retreat for everyone. The Directors of Blue Anchor Leisure and Management Team at Woodward lakes and lodges carry the theme set down by John Woodward. Guided by his principles and with an understanding of his beliefs and values, Woodward lakes and lodges is truly a special place and will become a haven of inspired luxury living in tune with the natural environment and all it has to offer.

A FESTIVAL OF YORKSHIRE This summer Scarborough will host a truly unique five-day festival to celebrate all that is great about Yorkshire. “A Festival of Yorkshire Scarborough”, supported by Welcome to Yorkshire, will run from Yorkshire Day, 1 August, with music and literature, games, performances and exhibitions across Scarborough. Some of the events will be free. One of the highlights will be an exhibition by world-famous artist, David Hockney, which opens at the Woodend Creative Industries Centre on Yorkshire Day itself. The festival culminates with the Wykeham Gathering mini music festival just outside Scarborough. The new event is being coordinated by Scarborough Borough Council and the Scarborough Urban Area Forum as part of its arts culture and sport theme for 2012 in association with other partners including The Yorkshire Society, Scarborough Spa, Scarborough Castle, the Woodend Creative Industries Centre, Scarborough Museums Trust and Scarborough Library and Information Centre. It ties in with Yorkshire Day, after Scarborough was invited by the Yorkshire Society to host the main civic gathering, with up to 200 mayors, chairmen and other dignitaries from across the region expected in the town to show their Yorkshire Pride. A Festival schedule and more detail can be found at www. discoveryorkshirecoast.com

PARKLANDS POND

DONCASTER

by Clint Walker

An unusual week for me this time; a visit to a venue I’ve been looking forward to very much has had to be cancelled due to spawning, so I’ll have to rebook at a later date, I’ve had a request to visit my local radio station to discuss fishing from a local and national viewpoint with an angling chum of mine Dan Millward, and I’ve also negotiated a contract to take over the social media and press releases for a Devon venue; busy, but no fishing! As a result of the aforementioned deal with Emperor Lakes in Devon, I’ve had to get ‘with it’ and set up my first ever Facebook page.....except it’s not that simple is it? To have a page for a company means very little interaction with other users, to have a page as an individual to advertise a company or venue is against the rules, so I had to set up TWO pages...... except that isn’t easy either.....I have had to use another email address to open an account so my personal email isn’t swamped with queries, so now I have two email accounts to monitor, a Facebook page and Twitter account and I have to contact Devon based media to spread the word.....I will get around to getting it all ‘in one sock’ so to speak, but at the minute, I’ll keep asking my 14 year old boy what to do next! How do teenagers cope with the digital age???? They make it look easy...... If you are thinking of a holiday in Devon, then check out www. emperorlakes.co.uk to see details of 40lbs+ carp and cats to almost 70lbs! My day last week at Ladybower should feature shortly in Angler’s Mail magazine, so keep an eye out for it. If you haven’t been fly fishing before, then Ladybower is an absolutely brilliant place to get started, especially if you visit for one of their ‘open days’ which sees free tuition and ‘taster’ sessions to get a feel for the noble art. There are loads of fish to be had from bank or boat, and the new team are now growing on their own fish to introduce at regular intervals to ensure you have good sport....and you can take some home for tea; what could be better?! My local radio station has also been in touch this week to ask me to do a guest slot on ‘Sportsdesk’; I like going on the radio, I’ve been lucky to have done it a few times now on a variety of stations; it’s something different and it’s always good fun, but this one will be a live, unscripted appearance which makes me a little more nervous! Hopefully, it will be a gentle questioning, but if I get a presenter with the interviewing skills of Basil Fawlty, then it may get lively! I’m taking my friend Dan Millward as back up to help out, so we will have to see what transpires......hopefully Dan can take over if I start to drown!!

In the run-up to Royal Ascot next week it’s another weekend of mainly tricky handicaps (with a couple of Listed races thrown in for good measure) on Channel 4, where coverage of the seven televised races comes from Sandown and York. The forecast ground at both venues is on the soft side, (soft at York and heavy at Sandown) so looking for horses that go on this ground will be the order of the day. York: 2.05 Queen Mother’s Cup (Lady Amateur Riders), (Handicap), Class 3, 3yo+, 0-95, 1m 4f: If ever there was a race to be left alone this is it. Not only is this a very closely knit handicap but also it has the further complications of: potential non runners (15 of the current 35 must drop out); stable form; and, last but not least, rider capability (regarding judgement of pace and tactics etc). There are possibly quite a few that could have been “laid out” for this so any selection is very tentative. Last time out performance could also be a key factor so my shortlist comprises: Hot Rod Mamma; Full Toss; Judicious; Lexington Bay; Nafaath; Troopingthecolour; and Scrapper Smith. Scrapper Smith, who has run well on his last two starts, gets a narrow verdict over Troopingthecolour, who has the not to be underestimated help of Sarena Brotherton from the saddle. Next best look to be Lexington Bay, Nafaath, Hot Rod Mamma and Judicious. 2.35 Ladbrokes.com Handicap, Class 2, 3yo+, 0-105, 1m 208yds:

3.45 Ian and Kate Hall Macmillan Stakes, Listed, Class 1, 3yo+, 1m: Andrew Balding’s Tullius gets a confident vote to continue his upward progression and land the hattrick after his last time out effort at Windsor. The main dangers to his chances would appear to come from: Winter’s Night; Dance and Dance; Barefoot Lady; Fury; and Beatrice Aurore. If the selection doesn’t run Dance and Dance gets the reserve slot ahead of Barefoot Lady, Fury and Winter’s Night. Sandown: 2.20 Betfred Mobile Sports Handicap, Class 3, 3yo, 0-90, 1m 1f: A maximum field size of fourteen requires that eighteen of the current thirty two entries have to be eliminated. Any selection is therefore somewhat tentative. If getting a run Dance With Me is narrowly preferred over Takeitfromalady, Quick Bite, Fennel Bay and Ishas (in that order). Others that may run well if bouncing back to their best are: Ventura Spirit; Spirit of the Law; and Lelaps. 2.50 Betfred the Bonus King Handicap, Class 2, 3yo+, 0-100, 1m 14yds: Sam Sharp and Leviathan have joint top ratings in my system for this one and cannot be totally left out of calculations but the one I prefer is top weight Man of Action who could be decent value. He finished down the field last time in the Lincoln at Doncaster but that race was run in a good time and fourth-placed Edinburgh Knight is currently vying for favouritism in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot next week, giving further substance to the form. If the selection fails to fire it could be that Fantasy Gladiator is the one to benefit ahead of Stage Attraction and Fennell Bay. 3.25 Novae Bloodstock Insurance Scurry Stakes, Listed, 3yo, 5f 6yds: David Barron’s unbeaten Pearl Secret is the one they all have to beat here. Ballesteros, Dam Beautiful, Seventeen Seventy and Miliika look like the ones to get closest to him with a narrow preference of that contingent for Seventeen Seventy.

3.10 Bond Tyres Trophy (Handicap), Class 2, 3yo, 0-105, 6f: Van Ellis gets the nod to come out on top of this tricky handicap after his very encouraging first effort on soft ground at Chester last week. The Michael Easterby trained pair Boris Grigoriev and Nameitwhatyoulike could prove to be big threats however, along with Gabriel’s Lad, Our Boy Jack, Gold City, Bella Ophelia, Rusty Rocket and Queen’s Revenge all of whom ran well on their last outings.

Selection Summary, York: 2.05 Scrapper Smith 2.35 Dubai Dynamo 3.10 Van Ellis 3.45 Tullius

Another very competitive race is in the offing here. Mark Johnston’s Landaman is on a roll at present but the spoils may be landed by Ruth Carr’s Dubai Dynamo who looks to be at the top of his game just now, his last week’s run behind Imperial Djay at Chester being one of the best that he has posted. The extra furlong and a bit here will help and the forecast ground will hold no terrors for him. He may have most to fear from Willie Jarvis’ Oriental Scot who was another posting a career-best in my estimation last time. If putting their best foot forward Hillview Boy and Tinshu could also be capable of big runs while the others that appear to be in good fettle at present are: Man of Action; Staff Sergeant; Extraterrestrial; and Summit Surge.

Good Luck!

SHEFFIELD GOLFERS TO TEE OFF FOR FAMOUS CUP Golfers will have the chance to battle it out in one of Sheffield’s oldest golf tournaments when it returns to the city this month. Tinsley Park Golf Course, which is managed by Sheffield International Venues (SIV), is hosting the prestigious Banning Cup competition on Saturday 23 June. The stroke play competition, which is celebrating its 91st year, is played over 36 holes with a prize table for both gross and net scores over the day and for morning and afternoon rounds. The competition is open to all amateur members of golf clubs affiliated to the Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs, as long as they hold a current handicap of 12 or less. Andy Carnall, SIV’s golf manager, said: “The Banning Cup is a historical Sheffield tournament dating back to 1921 and one that we are proud to host at Tinsley Park year after year. “The competition always creates a lot of interest with local golfers and, with the course in great condition, we are looking forward to see who scoops the famous trophy this year.”

The Banning Cup will be presented to the player with the lowest net score after the 36 holes of competition and the Len Ledger Trophy is awarded to the player with the lowest gross score. Tinsley Park Golf Course is an 18-hole par 70 course and provides challenge for golfers at all levels, with length, accuracy, judgement of distance and concentration all required. Entry to the Banning Cup is £25 per person and players can register online or can pick up registration forms from reception at Tinsley Park Golf Club. Alternatively, contact Tinsley Park Golf Club on 0114 244 8974 or visit www. tinsleyparkgolfcourse.co.uk/ for more details.

Premiership, making 34 appearances in their 200910 promotion-winning campaign, the defender has since enjoyed successful loan stints with Sheffield United, Portsmouth and most recently Brighton. On the international stage, Mattock has represented England at various levels including Under-17s, Under-19s and Under-21s.

Sheffield Wednesday have completed the capture of defender Joe Mattock. The 22-year-old will join the Owls on a three-year deal. Mattock came through the ranks at Leicester City before making his senior debut for the Foxes in April 2007. The defender was shortlisted for the Young Apprentice of the Year award in 2008 for his achievements at the Walkers Stadium but was narrowly pipped to the prize by current Owls stopper Mark Beevers. The attack-minded full back made 73 appearances for Leicester before, then Championship side, West Bromwich Albion paid £1m for his signature in August 2009. After aiding the Baggies in their return to the

WILSON HAPPY WITH SEVEN BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

Blades manager Danny Wilson has welcomed the decision by the Football League to increase the number of substitutes clubs can name in their matchday squad’s next season. Earlier this season, the Blades boss claimed that reducing the number of players at his disposal could have a detrimental effect upon the development of home grown talent. “I can understand and appreciate the reasons why it was cut to five in the first place but it’s not one I necessarily that I agree with,” he said. “Looking at the bigger picture, it means that young lads coming through have probably been denied the experience of being a part of things at first team level more than would otherwise have been the case. “Even if they don’t get a game, just being in the dressing room and soaking-up what it’s like can be

JAMIE FOWLER TESTIMONIAL OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

The Owls will face SPL side Kilmarnock in Jamie Fowler’s testimonial at Rugby Park on Wednesday 8 August. Killie veteran Fowler was signed by manager Bobby Williamson in a full time contract in July 1997 in the aftermath of Kilmarnock’s Scottish Cup victory over Falkirk. Initially a pacy winger, he made his debut against East Fife in July 1999 at right back and to date has made over 400 appearances for Kilmarnock in this position and is vying with Motherwell player Steven Hammell for the most League appearances since the inception of the Scottish Premier League. Jamie had scored four goals for the club and last season almost doubled his contribution with a further three in the league, now totaling seven. The past season he captained Kilmarnock in their League Cup final victory against Celtic at Hampden Park and has recently signed a new two-year deal at the club. He has been honoured three times at Scotland Under-21 level in 2001, and also in a “B” international against Finland in 2007. In 2011 he was granted a testimonial season for his commitment and dedication to Kilmarnock Football Club over the last 14 years culminating in a series of activities which will conclude with a match against Sheffield Wednesday.

EVANS PLAYING WAITING GAME MILLERS NEWS www.themillers.co.uk

Boss Steve Evans is having to be patient as he waits for a response about his loan bid for an as yet unnamed striker. Evans planned a raid for the ‘exciting prospect’ last week but after being rebuffed in his efforts to sign the striker permanently; he submitted a long-term loan offer. Speaking to www.themillers.co.uk today, Evans revealed that he is still awaiting a response to his offer, but is expecting more news shortly. “We are expecting something back soon, but we have had no word today,” he said. “As I said in my ‘Gaffer on a Sunday’ column, we have made an approach and now it is left with the Chief Executive to discuss things with the club in question, so I have let them get on with it. “Hopefully we can have some news soon but if it is not to happen we will move onto other targets.” The Millers are looking to strengthen their attacking options following the sale of Lewis Grabban to League One side Bournemouth, whilst Evans also admitted at the weekend that he is working hard to strengthen the left-back area.

an important part of their development at such a crucial stage of their careers.” Clubs voted to reduce the number of substitutes allowed before the start of last season after several expressed fears it hiked costs at a time when they were struggling to fulfil UEFA’s Financial Fair Play criteria. However, they were permitted to name seven in both the Carling and FA cups.

PEMBERTON BECOMES NEW DIRECTOR BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

In light of the well publicised Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) John Pemberton has become the Blades new Director of Academy Coaching. This will see Pemberton oversee the design and implementation of the club’s Academy coaching programme which will see the coaching contact time double. He will be responsible for all of the club’s youth coaches, and will also have responsibility for their education and performance as the club looks to continue to produce its own talent. The EPPP is a major shift in football’s governing bodies thinking and Pemberton’s role will be the most influential in the Academy overseeing the implementation of the new performance plan where it matters most; on the pitch. A new post as Academy Manager will be appointed in the coming weeks to administer all of the supporting strands required for the successful running of United’s Academy. This will give Pemberton the best possible chance to continue to develop the best possible talent for the Blades. Blades Group Chief Executive Julian Winter explained the Academy Manager’s role as providing ‘services’ to Pemberton to ensure his focus is solely upon the coaching and development of the region’s top talents. Winter said: “The club has a very good reputation for producing talent; Harry Maguire, Matt Lowton, George Long, Kyle Naughton, Kyle Walker, Phil Jagielka, Nick Montgomery, Stephen Quinn are just some of the names that spring to mind. “John has certainly been instrumental in the development of Harry and George and we have others that are coming through. “This change of role for John will see him continue that work and add to it by removing some of the administrative encumbrances he has had to cope with and allocating them elsewhere. “We are confident that this change will enhance John’s ability to develop the best talent for the club”
