SHEFFIELD PREPARES TO WELCOME OLYMPIC TORCH M.V. MOBILITY Sheffield is excitedly gearing up for the arrival of the Olympic Torch, which is coming to the city this summer ahead of the London 2012 Games – and you are being invited to join in the celebrations! The Torch will be in Sheffield on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 June, and during the celebrations you will get the chance to get together with other local people, friends and relatives to celebrate the once in a lifetime occasion. The city’s celebrations will culminate with a special free Evening Celebration Event

in Barker’s Pool on 25 June, which will feature musical and dance performances. Whilst in Sheffield, the Torch will pass through Chapeltown and Ecclesfield, before heading towards Penistone Road. It will then make its way along Glossop Road, Clarkehouse Road and Brocco Bank, before being down carried Ecclesall Road to St Mary’s Gate, Eyre Street, Arundel Gate, Norfolk Street and Surrey Street. Click here for the full route. It will reach the final leg of that day’s journey when it hits

Leopold Street, ready for the evening’s celebrations. The torch will depart from Sheffield on the morning of Tuesday 26 June during an event involving local schools at Don Valley Stadium, and will then pass the English Institute of Sport A number of inspirational local people have been nominated to carry the Torch around the Sheffield route. One of the torchbearers is James Needham, GB wheelchair rugby player who was confined to a wheelchair aged

seven following a car accident, and now works visiting spinal units around the country teaching wheelchair skills and helping recently injured people.

Weekly Wit MICKEY’S ALBERT MAGIC SHOW SNODGRASS

With...

In a captivating combination, favourite Disney characters join a professional illusionist live on stage in a performance that will excite and delight children of all ages. From Feld Entertainment, the producers of Disney On Ice, Disney Live! presents Mickey’s Magic Show brings audiences into a world where Disney magic takes on a whole new meaning. The tour makes its stop in Sheffield during the children’s summer holidays on Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th August, with three performances per day of 10:30am, 1:30pm, and 4:30pm performing to a much reduced capacity Arena in an intimate theatre style setting. Disney Live! presents Mickey’s Magic Show features the special magic from legendary Disney films, performed right before your eyes: Cinderella’s rags turn into a beautiful ball gown in a split second; Aladdin’s Princess Jasmine levitates into the air; and the enchanted dancing brooms in Fantasia help sweep Minnie off her feet. The Master Magician himself – Mickey Mouse – performs astonishing illusions along with Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother, Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter, and professional illusionist Michael Barron. The magic is complimented by appearances from Disney princesses Belle and Snow White and Mickey’s pals from Toontown — Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy. “This one-of-a-kind show gives parents and children the power to see magic everywhere,” says Kenneth Feld, producer of the Disney Live! shows and producer of the most successful live illusion show of all time, Siegfried & Roy. “We take them on an inspirational journey with the Disney characters where they learn to find the magic within and all around them. At the same time, families will see world class illusions that will truly take their breath away.” The production values and stagecraft of Disney Live! presents Mickey’s Magic Show make this an exceptional family show. Famed Illusion Designer Jim Steinmeyer, who has worked with leading magicians David Copperfield, Lance Burton and Siegfried & Roy, brings his more than 20 years of world-class experience to the illusions in the show, which include a dynamic sawing-in-half duet and an awe-inspiring levitation of Minnie. In another astonishing magic act, illusionist Michael Barron levitates Princess Jasmine. The moment is pinnacled by a starry night sky, with a mood both mesmerizing and surreal. To the tune of “A Whole New World,” Michael ultimately joins Jasmine in the air as they soar high above in harmony. “In every show we do, we try to exceed audiences’ expectations,” says Director Jerry Bilik. “With the sheer magnitude of the illusions, we are able to take the audience to a place far beyond what they would ever imagine. From the moment the magic begins on stage, audiences will be in for a visual surprise as they take part in a unique Disney experience.” Michael Barron’s interactive style as an illusionist adds another dimension to the show as he brings children up on stage to assist in the magic. Whether it’s making a Magician’s Apprentice tissue paper hat or inspecting a trunk for ‘The Fastest Escape in the World,’ children in the audience have the opportunity to become part of the show. No matter if they are on stage or in their seats, children are given an unforgettable experience as magician’s helpers in Disney Live! presents Mickey’s Magic Show. Amidst a show jam-packed with surprises and spectacle, audiences learn to find the magic inside as they take part in a revolutionary blend of captivating magic. Audiences will see their favourite Disney characters including Donald Duck, Goofy, Alice in Wonderland, the Mad Hatter, and Disney Princesses; Jasmine, Belle, Snow White, and Cinderella. Mickey, Minnie and friends come together with word-class magicians to perform magic from legendary Disney films right before your eyes. See the Fairy Godmother transform Cinderella’s rags into a beautiful gown in a spilt second, the spectacular levitation of Aladdin’s Princess Jasmine and the enchanted dancing brooms of Fantasia. Anything can happen if you just believe! Just bought some counterfeit Mr Kipling’s. I must say, they’re exceedingly good fakes. My morning health and fitness routine is a mixture of aerobics, isotonics, isometrics and a bit of yoga, diligently exercising every muscle in my body and focusing my mental faculties ... ... though I admit that to the casual observer I appear to be merely lifting a coffee cup and lighting up a cigarette. I said to my wife, “I wish there was a little more magic in our marriage.” “What, you mean be a little bit more adventurous.” she replied. “No, I’d like to see you do a vanishing act.” I had a fight with my French neighbour over metric v’s imperial measurements. I ended up beating him to within 2.54cm of his life. Every now and then I like to lie back, stare up and the night sky, with all it’s glowing stars, and just wonder to myself... ‘How the hell do I get out of this planetarium?’ I had the laptop open earlier and said to the missus, “Which one do you fancy, Spain or Portugal?” “Oooh!” she squealed “Portugal please!” “Not a problem, consider it done,” I replied. God knows why she’s so excited. I only put a pound on for her on BetFred - she’ll hardly win anything.

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

The Saints We continue this week by looking at St Patrick, St Hilda, St Francis and St Ledger. St Patrick St Patrick, a Christian missionary, is recognised nowadays as the Patron Saint of Ireland (c. 435 AD.) He was captured in Wales by Irish pirates and reduced to slavery for six years. He entered the Church and returned as an ordained bishop. Patrick encouraged the Irish to embrace religion and become monks and nuns. In the National Museum in Dublin his shrine contains his tooth and bell, which can often be seen on display. March 17th is St Patrick’s Day and traditionally on that day you would wear green, eat all things green and wear a shamrock, which symbolises the Holy Trinity. St Hilda of Whitby St Hilda (614- 680AD) was Abbess of Whitby Monastery. She is the Patron Saint

of Learning and Culture. A local legend says when seabirds fly over the abbey they dip their wings in her honour. I have seen a ghost in the monastery but I am not sure if it is St Hilda. She looks out to sea watching for the sailors returning safely . St Francis of Assisi St Francis of Assisi (1181-1226AD) is the Patron Saint of Animals. He was the founder of the Franciscan Order. Born into a rich family at a time of unrest, he turned his back on war and wealth and travelled as a pilgrim helping the poor and lepers. St Francis had a close rapport with animals and loved to talk and preach to them. St Ledger St Ledger (616-679AD) was Bishop and Martyr of Autun. Once ordained he became Abbot of Saint -Maixent (653AD) which he reformed by introducing the rule of Benedict. He cared for the poor building churches and helping the poor. St Ledger fought in battles and fell from favour and was beheaded. The St Ledger horse race is not connected - this was named after an 18th century Colonel St Ledger. They don’t have to be part of WRVS, they can be volunteering for any other organisation or volunteering more informally. Do you know a Diamond Champion? Help celebrate WRVS Diamond Champions by nominating someone you know. Sixty entries will be shortlisted in each region: Scotland; Wales; Northern Ireland and the following regions of England, North East, North West, Yorkshire and Humberside; Midlands, East and South East, South and South West by a judging panel. All 480 shortlisted Diamond Champions will be presented with a specially designed Diamond Champions badge and certificate at a local celebration in the early autumn. At each event a regional judging panel will select ten people from each region to join the other 70 other regional Diamond Champions at a royal residence to meet Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall later in the autumn. Nominate your Diamond Champion by using the online Diamond Champions nomination form or download a Diamond Champion nomination form.

A NEW DEAL FOR SHEFFIELD BUS PASSENGERS

http://www.sypte.co.uk/media.aspx?id=2956 People in Sheffield are to be asked their opinion on a new city-wide bus partnership scheme. The new service, introduced by the Sheffield Bus Partnership, aims to make bus travel easier, more affordable, convenient, economical, and more reliable than ever before. The Sheffield Bus Partnership is a unique agreement between First South Yorkshire, Stagecoach Yorkshire, TM Travel, Sheffield Community Transport, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), and Sheffield City Council. It will see all parties working together to make sure the new proposal for bus travel works best for customers. South Yorkshire Integrated Transport Authority meeting will discuss a recommendation to approve consultation on the new scheme. This includes the introduction of co-ordinated timetables, meaning that people will have to wait less time for their bus, the option of buying cheaper multi-operator bus tickets, and the likelihood of tram travel being included. Changes to the network will also happen less frequently than before. The partners believe that by working together they will be able to help grow the number of people using buses by making the network simpler, more flexible and more convenient. From 18 June to 14 July the partnership will be asking people what they think about the network proposals, which have been designed to best fit people’s needs. Members of the public can give their feedback using the dedicated website www. sheffieldbuspartnership.co.uk or can pick up a form from Travel Information Centres in Sheffield. In addition to timetabling and network improvements over the next year people in Sheffield will be able to look forward to: smart tickets, which means easier payment methods and removing the need to pay cash to the driver more convenient ticketing offers offering more flexibility with a choice of tickets newer greener, low floor buses David Young, SYPTE’s Director of Customer Experience, said: “We think that this package we have come up with will make big difference to the quality of the bus network in Sheffield. By all working together the partners believe we can make travelling by bus a more convenient option for people throughout Sheffield.”

TENANTS ASKED TO GET INVOLVED IN FUTURE HOUSING SERVICES https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/in-your-area/ initiatives/futureplan.html

The city’s council tenants are being asked about what they want from housing services in the future, as Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Homes prepare to bring their services together within the Council. Tenants and leaseholders are being asked what they would like to see from services in the future and how these should be delivered, when council housing management is led by the City Council. This opportunity will start as part of ongoing work with tenants with an initial consultation being launched on Monday 18th June. People are being urged to look out for a postcard enclosed with the Sheffield Homes ‘In Touch’ magazine. The 5 minute, freepost survey kicks off the ongoing consultation with tenants, which will include a variety of ways for everybody to have their say on council housing. This feedback will then inform more detailed work with tenants, leaseholders and staff to develop the new service – this will take place from the Autumn onwards. Councillor Harry Harpham, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Homes and Neighbourhoods said: “I want to personally invite each and every tenant to get involved and tell us what they think. We want to give tenants a bigger say in how council services are run during this time of change. It is important that we hear how tenants want to shape the service we offer as a council in the future and they will know better than most, what works for them. We will use all the feedback we get from tenants to help us create a quality housing service. “

Celebrating Seventy-Five Years of Success at the

Arundel Ex-Servicemens Club With 2,000 members, the Arundel Ex-Servicemens Club is Sheffield’s largest and still thriving after three-quarters of a centur y. What are the reasons behind its success? Club Secretary Brian Simmonite is definite, “pile it high, sell it cheap and look after your members.” This is his maxim and it certainly works – just take a look at what is on offer Beer prices start from an incredibly low £1.46p per pint, with Lagers from £1.76 and Guinness at only £2.00. Spirits are just £1.05 a shot. Boddingtons, Stones, John Smiths, Wards, Heineken, Carling, Carlsberg: these are just some of the famous brands provided at the bars throughout the Arundel. Snooker and Pool fans can play completely free, permanently, on

the two snooker tables and one pool table in the games room. Quality live acts appear on an unequalled five nights every week on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays; entertaining members in the 500 seat concert room. For those wishing a more relaxed evening out, the club’s facilities include not one but three (yes three) comfortable lounges. The bars open Monday to Saturday from 11.00 am to 3.00pm, then from 6.30 pm to 10.30pm. On Sundays this changes to 11.30 am to 2 pm, then from 7pm to 10.30 pm. “These have been our traditional opening times for 75 years,” says Brian. “Our members appreciate and respect these hours, especially as we are considerate about ‘drinking-up time.’”

So where does all this history of success stem from? The original Manor & District Ex-Servicemen’s Association was reformed as the Arundel Ex-Servicemens Club in 1937 when it opened at new premises on City Road, its home for 75 years. The club has been extensively expanded and refurbished over the decades and the premises are now one of the biggest club buildings in South Yorkshire. The oldest member is well into his 90’s and Brian himself has been a member for 55 years, while his father Percy Simmonite was a founder member back in 1937. In fact, Brian’s three sons continue the family tradition, with Nick running the Frog and Parrot while Mark and Adam share in the management of Henry’s. Both of these bars are famous Sheffield hostelries in the city centre. Their success stems from Brian’s experience. Many visitors from within the industry have commented

on the efficient running of the Arundel, with some likening the operation to that of controlling a navy ship. From sound purchasing methods to stock control (the cellar operation is amazing) from staff training to customer care and for the ability to create a great atmosphere for members, the entire team at the Arundel are to be highly commended. They have all played their part, not only in helping the club to achieve its 75th Anniversary, but also for continuing to provide such a popular entertainment venue for 2,000 members and their guests 7 days every week. In a time of difficulty for many clubs, it is great to be able to report on one that sets such a good example of continuing success.

Many Congratulations from The Mercury and the Arundel’s suppliers.

GATECRASHER TO OPEN NEW SHEFFIELD CLUB Exactly 5 years since one of the UK’s most iconic clubs was decimated in a fire, owners of worldcelebrated Sheffield nightclub Gatecrasher have revealed firm plans to develop a new flagship venue in the city. The club brand is currently looking at a various venues with a view to launching in the city later this year. On Monday 18th June, 2007, lying in a heap beside the crowds of locals who gathered to watch a piece of history razed to the ground were the remains of Gatecrasher One which was reduced to a blackened shell after a fire ripped through the building. The loss of Gatecrasher in Sheffield sent shockwaves throughout clubland, no-one was hurt but dance music fans worldwide mourned the loss of a clubbing institution. Following the fire the club received over 5000 emails and letters of support. Club bosses vowed to return to their spiritual home as soon as possible and have spent several years trying to find a suitable location and secure planning. In 2010 bosses revealed their intent to return to the city and although planning permission was refused on the first venue they looked at, Gatecrasher has since been working alongside Sheffield City Council’s planning department to secure an alternative venue. Gatecrasher has received overwhelming support in the city. In 2010, within days of announcing their return to Sheffield, Gatecrasher received support from over 15,000 people. And bosses are once again urging the city to get behind them and ‘Vote Yes’ for the new club . A facebook group has been created to talk directly to fans about the new venue with over 12,000 active members and new ones joining daily. Simon Raine, MD of Gatecrasher, commented; “This week marks one of the most significant weeks in Gatecrasher’s history. Exactly five years ago our beloved Sheffield club was razed to the ground following a devastating fire. The whole event ripped the heart out of the Gatecrasher team. A club which we had spent over 10 years nurturing and developing was gone in a matter of hours, a piece of clubbing history lost forever. But that was never going to be in the end of the story and we always vowed to return to our spiritual home in Sheffield. Gatecrasher will rise like a phoenix from the ashes, defining a new decade of clubbing. Our new site will exceed all expectations bolder, bigger and a lot more cutting-edge than ever before. We want to create the best nightclub in the world that has always been our aim!." Simon continued; “We were devastated at the loss of the Sheffield club in 2007 and have been searching tirelessly for a location so we can return to our spiritual Sheffield

home. What’s been heartening is all the support we’ve had from the city, we get emails daily asking us when we are returning to Sheffield and now it is finally a reality, with plans rapidly falling into place." Since Gatecrasher launched in Sheffield in the mid90s, it has played a significant role in the development of the city and has been previously been praised by council officials for its impact on the economy and tourism. The clubs contribution to Sheffield’s thriving nightlife and entertainment scene firmly placed the city on the International map creating major interest and inward investment. The impact the club has had on the city is staggering with over 8 million people attending Gatecrasher in Sheffield in over 10 years. A survey also found Gatecrasher to be the number one reason that students decided to study in Sheffield. During Gatecrasher’s reign in the city, the club played host to the most spectacular club nights which are now immortalised in clubbing history. The club kick started a dance revolution and helped forge the careers of the world’s biggest DJs including Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto, Timo Mass, Mauro Picotto and Armin Van Buuren. Gatecrasher also staged a monumental millennium event in the city when Paul van Dyk performed in front of 27,000 clubbers at the Don Valley stadium. The new club promises to take clubbers back to the halcyon days of the dance revolution, encapsulating the ethos and spirit of the original Gatecrasher Sheffield. A club where Paul van Dyk’s feted 6hr sets became clubbing folklore. A club which inspired the Chemical Brothers to write hit track ‘Superstar DJs’. A club which made dance history every week. And a club that put Sheffield on the map! From humble beginnings to a world-conquering global club brand, Gatecrasher has continued to push boundaries and dominate dance music. Its reputation as a flamboyant, individual and hedonistic brand continues to grow and the Gatecrasher name remains emblazoned in the heart and soul of clubbers throughout the world. The Gatecrasher lion has always sat proudly at the forefront of clubland, responsible for many of Sheffield’s never-to- be- forgotten events. Simon concluded; “This about more than a club opening a club. It's about the coming together of everyone who loves Gatecrasher to create the ultimate club. A club made by the people, for the people. A republic!” The proposed club has many high profile supporters including Sheffield’s world renowned DJ and producer Toddla T who commented; “When I travel the world DJing, one of the things people ask about apart from The Arctic Monkeys & Warp Records, is 'What’s Gatecrasher up to these days?' It was definitely a staple of the Sheffield music scene not only nation-wide, but world-wide. I think it’s important we get it back not only for the thousands of people in Sheffield that miss it, but the fact that it’s has been so focal as part of the Sheffield club scene for years!” Gatecrasher is looking to engage the city of Sheffield in the quest to launch its new club and is looking for suggestions and support from clubbers via its facebook group; http://www.facebook.com/ Gatecrashertobuildsheffieldvenue

FORMER CLUBLAND ENTERTAINER RECEIVES MBE 1940ʼS RETURN TO SHEFFIELD REVEREND HENRY Joe Longthorne, much loved British vocalist and former clubland entertainer, received an MBE in the Birthday Honours List on Saturday June 16th 2012 for services to charity and music. Longthorne was born into a show business family; his parents were both travelling show people. When he was six, he came first in a talent show and his prize was a toy motor car. At fourteen he landed a part in Yorkshire Television’s series Junior Showtime, and remained with the show for over two years. He then turned professional and earned a living in Northern working men’s clubs. In his 40+ year career Joe has played to millions of people across the globe and has worked tirelessly for many charitable organisations. He has devoted a huge amount of time in particular to the Variety Club of Great Britain who honoured him in 2010 with their Silver Heart Award. That made Joe the only person ever to receive three Variety Club Awards - his first was Promising Young Artist and the second a Lifetime Achievement Award in

2007. Joe has also performed four times at the Royal Variety Show. This is all the more remarkable since Joe recently recovered from leukaemia and a harrowing bone marrow transplant. Joe is currently on a major tour encompassing over 60 dates in the UK as well as shows in Australia and Spain before the end of the year. By then he will have performed over 150 world-wide shows in 2012 alone. Commenting on the MBE Joe said “To say I am delighted would be an understatement. It’s all the more dear to me as it comes in this very special Jubilee year. This is an unexpected honour and very humbling and I am extremely glad that I’m still here to receive it!” Joe first shot to fame in 1981 as a singer and an impressionist on LWT’s Search For A Star. His success led to appearances at the London Palladium and a month long run at the Talk Of The Town. His own prime time TV show followed, The Joe Longthorne Show, running from 1988-1991. At the height of his success, however, he was struck down

with lymphoma - he battled this while continuing to work. Sellout shows at the Royal Albert Hall, the Sydney Opera House and the London Palladium ran side by side with mismanagement, resultant bankruptcy and the diagnosis of leukaemia. In 2006 Joe received a bone marrow transplant and in 2007 fought back to perform another sell show at the Palladium.

This coming Saturday, 23rd June, sees Groovy Gazza Productions of ‘A Salute to the 1940’s’ perform in the Sheffield Peace Gardens. Gary Birtles who is the producer says ‘We can’t wait, this will be the 2nd year we have performed at the Peace Gardens and just hope that the weather is the same as last year. We had a great crowd, initially we just expected people to sit down for a short while and listen but they stayed for the whole show, a great atmosphere.’ GGP are a Sheffield company and 5 out of the 6 are South Yorkshire based. ‘It will be great performing in our home city, many of the cast have family and friends coming too.’ says Gary. Normally the show is on the road traveling as far as Scotland or Norfolk. Gary’s wife is Lorrie Brown who performs in the show with a tribute to Dame Vera Lynn. Lorrie has been portraying her for almost 20 yrs now and has performed all around the country inc 2 National theatre tours with the legendary Danny La Rue, a sold out performance at Blackpool Opera House alongside the great Frank Carson and singing to 33,000 football fans on the pitch at half time.

Lorrie, who spoke on Radio Sheffield over the Jubilee weekend about Vera Lynn, is hoping someday to meet the great lady, she says, ‘I really admire her, she was a gutsy girl and whilst performing in ENSA, (the entertainment company established to entertain the troops around the world), she played in some of the most inhospitable places in the world, inc Burma, she didnt have any music, sound system or stage, she would just turn up and stand next to a jeep or by the tents and entertain the troops, this is partly what made her the forces sweetheart’. Gary says ‘We have a great company who really enjoy performing the show, everyone has a spot on their own and at the end, the whole company joins together to get everyone on their feet with classics such as Always Be An England, We’ll Meet Again and Land of Hope and Glory. The show starts at 1.00pm following the veterans parade and ceremony, which starts in Millennium Square at 11.45. For more details on where A Salute to the 1940’s, or Lorrie’s A Salute to Vera Lynn will be performing, go to the web site at www.veralynntribute.eu

To let patients know what they can expect from Radio Nightingale we produce a variety of printed materials which are distributed around the hospital and available from outside our studio on level B of the hospital. One of these is our quarterly information booklet which includes news about the station and fundraising activities along with programme details. Production of this is made possible by the local businesses who place adverts in the publication. Work is underway on preparing for print on 50th edition of the booklet but there are still a couple of spaces available for advertisements, which we need to fill to cover the costs of printing. If you run a local business and would like to include your details in this professionally produced publication please get in touch with us as soon as possible. The booklet is distributed around the hospital so passes your message to a variety of people. Take the opportunity to promote yourself in this low-cost advertising medium and be satisfied in the knowledge that you are supporting a local charity at the same time.

WIND YOU UP MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

After leaving the toilet seat up and no toilet paper to use, what are our most common bathroom complaints? I opened the lines just the other day during my show on this particular subject. Suggestions included not cleaning the bath out after it’s been used, stray hairs here and there and several people mentioned bad smells. It’s normally us fellas who are to blame, according to your comments. Pauline in Sheffield said her husband has a wet shave every day and always leaves the contents of the razor all over the sink, while Yvette in Hoyland has struggled over the years with getting the family to abide by toothpaste tube etiquette. Back in the day of screw on lids, that would always be the first thing to go missing. Even now with flip top lids, it’s always left open at her place. On top of that, the tube being squeezed from the middle was mentioned several times over. Yvette also said her kids must eat the loo paper, with the amount they seem to get through. The correct answer ranking in third position was actually toothpaste bits strewn around the sink! Give me a call on 01709 304244 Tune in for lots more fun, games to discuss how your business can and of course great music. SOLLY, THE MAN, THE LEGEND CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

What sort of man was Reverend Solly and why did setting up working men’s clubs become such an important mission for him? We can say that he was a philosopher, a social reformer, a man dedicated to helping others and more, all rolled into one. Through careful consideration and participant observation of Victorian society’s darker side, he came to see working men’s clubs as something positive, an institution that could make a difference. And he believed he could make a difference, which he certainly did! Solly was a clever man: being well educated he could have entered any profession but chose the religious life. He was a person who believed in the benefits of education and artistic pursuits as he was fortunate enough to have been brought up with these. He saw them not only as individual pleasures but as things that had great social value. They were not just for the wealthy and privileged in his view but should be spread around. The philosopher side of Solly believed that educationally oriented leisure could help to raise people up and in doing so, improve society as a whole. He was not alone in this view as at the time others attempting to bring about reforms such as those working within the rational recreation movement. There were many schemes attempting to inculcate a sense of appreciation of art and education into the common people. Some worked, others fell by the wayside. Solly’s model of working men’s clubs came to be a lasting success story, as we see 150 years after the CIU was established. Solly was a reformer but not a revolutionary. He recognized many problems with capitalism and its inherent inequality but was wary of rapid, violent change. For him, working with people and bringing out the best in them was what was needed and he believed clubs could do this for working men. They would reform themselves by getting involved in setting up and running clubs and taking on social responsibilities. He tried to avoid being patronizing but probably sometimes did fall into that trap and some found him difficult to work with. But in setting up ‘the Union’, he helped bring about thousands of clubs and left us a huge legacy, which continues to this day. I wonder if he realized at that time the extent to which his beloved club movement would spread and how long it would last?

METALLICA DOWNLOAD 08/06/12

live REVIEW

Words by Katy Evans

Easily one of the most favoured classic rock bands to ever walk the four corners of planet earth, Metallica were always going to be a hugely powerful headlining act at the tenth annual Download Festival. Pulling in crowds of almost seventy thousand spectators, the Saturday headliners not only brought to life the authentically communal vibe, but also a little bit of newly formed history aswell…a set solely based around the entire ‘Black’ fifth studio album. And hell did they smash it. Although a somewhat common fixture on the worldwide rockers festival circuit, since their formation onto the international stages of stardom in 1981 Metallica have no doubt pioneered the commercial success of heavy thrash metal. Resurrecting it back from the ashes of which it lulled, the four piece have reignited everyone’s pure passion for hard rock with their particularly poignant slot on the Download 2012 main headlining stage. Whole heartedly saluting their most brutally kick ass studio recording to date, the quartet’s set was a tribute to ‘The Black Album,’ Metallica’s fifth release with some of their finest belters intertwined. Snatching five top twenty hit singles in the UK charts alone, the 1991 release not only sums up the brute force demonstrated by the rock Gods, but also their pinnacle moment as the world’s greatest metal band. Opening their set with the final track off the album ‘The Struggle Within,’ face melting hooks and fierce baselines engulfed thousands upon thousands of spectators, all of which from kick off were eating out of lead vocalist James Hetfield’s shredding mits. Other belters ‘My Friend Of Misery,’ ‘The God That Failed’ and ‘Of Wolf And Man’ all followed much in the same vein to capture the true authenticity of such an influential US rock group. Although a somewhat lengthy time since the band brought out a worldwide, chart dominating hit, it’s more than evident how much enthusiasm and commitment for such a brutal genre they still harbour. To play the puppet master to a soundtrack over twenty years old is a certified medal of longevity to ensure Metallica remains in the hearts of minds of metal fans across the globe. Granting their crowd with a blasting performance of the groups official top most played song on their repertoire, ‘Enter Sandman’ is Metallica’s legacy to the God’s of Rock. Snatching up the number one position in over seven countries upon its release in 1991, although ridiculously overplayed and outgrown, the fiery chorus line still sounds as authentic and fresh as the day it was produced. A handshake from the past to the present, Metallica showed everyone how simply they can slip back into their early nineties power stance to take us all on a journey through time and space. Rock on.

Words by Katy Evans

Bringing to life their unique take on electronica vs indie rock galore, Hot Chip have been somewhat off the boil for a while however are back with a brand spanking new UK tour and intricately infused alternative tracks to match. With new album material, ‘In Our Heads’ littering the London based seven piece’s ninety minute set, it’s pretty damn safe to say…Hot Chip are back. Ok ok so forgive us if we were only under the impression Hot chip released their one off belter of a single ‘Ready For the Floor’ back in January 2008, which unlike more of the groups underground material, reached international success with critics giving the track an outstanding nine stars out of ten. Forgive us if we thought Hot Chip had slipped so far under the radar that we totally overlooked their four other studio albums which have built up a more than impressive recording contract to EMI. And finally, forgive us for not liking Hot Chip as much as we should do, because from the sights and sounds of their Leadmill main stage performance on 9th June, hell they smashed it. Incorporating all of the Leadmill’s unique quirkiness, unspoken style and downright trendy image, Hot Chip allowed for a first rate insight into the trails and tribulations of a working electronic band. Forget the naff haircuts or dodgy Nike air trainers, these Southern lads sure know how to put on a cracking live show with blaring base lines, rip rawring melodies and fierce hooks coming as a much standard procedure upon the night. Combining together track off all four of the bands studio albums, new material from the now released fifth record ‘In Our Heads’ follows much in the same vein as previous material, however has enough punch and grit to stand out as a pretty reputable sound. New tracks ‘These Chains’ and ‘Flutes’ capture the essence of what is Hot Chip; fast paced, intricately crafted belters to not only entice the Sheffield masses but making them pine for so much more. Although always going to be the case with a band who had such a powerful chart breaker as ‘Ready For The Floor,’ the climax of the entire evening came with the performance of the indie anthem, a while hearted salute to electronic verses deep rooted chorus lines. Seizing the mood with this trade mark lyrics, lead vocalist Alexis Taylor worked the room to mould it into the most dedicated of Hot Chip fans about…arms o’raised, spindly legs o’dancing,

round-up by stuart renton

I saw a brilliant headline in the paper the other day. It said: “Come on England”, and, if you believed half the stuff you read in the papers, there are plenty of people who already have (those dirty, dirty footballers). In other news, it’ll come as absolutely no surprise to anyone that The Voice UK tour has been cancelled due to lack of interest. Which is a crying shame as they’d given me a small percentage of unsold tickets to give away here on my column (a small percentage in this case being about eighty thousand!). The message here to the BBC is don’t waste tax payer’s money on crap shows and if you absolutely must waste money on utter drivel then you’d better make sure the people you’re putting through to the live rounds have more character than road kill! And speaking of things with the personality of road kill, Cheryl Cole has miraculously hit the number 1 spot in the charts with her single, Call My Name, that she not only sang (thank you, Auto Tune) but she also co-wrote. Now, if you’re fortunate enough to have missed this song, the lyrics go: “Yes I love you say for the way I know we’ve been apart. It’s an endless circle of poison arrow to my heart” and before you ask, there are no typos in that sentence. Finally Ms Cole has found her calling with these lyrics of near-Shakespearean proportions. My personal stance on the whole Cole phenomenon is that it’s all a load of XXXX (something Benedict Garret had in the bath last week on Big Brother). Asked why her new album, Cheryl, didn’t have her surname on it, Cole replied in an interview that they didn’t have room for it (obviously no one’s heard of that little ‘shrink font’ button that’s available on all major desktop publishing packages. They could have put the word over her face, but it wouldn’t be the first time a Cole has sat on… (this joke deleted for being entirely inappropriate (and probably libellous)). I wish there was a “shrink rubbish non-celebrity careers” button, but sadly, deprived of anything even remotely resembling a tactical nuke, I’ll have to make do with griping about their general lack of talent. But speaking of actual talent, Douglas Adams’ legacy, The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, is touring the universe and it’s coming to Nottingham in the near future, so if you’re a fan of “the Guide” then there’s still time to pick up tickets for the show that sees all the original cast back together to recreate the magic of the radio series live on stage. Just remember to bring a towel! Check it out at: http://www.hitchhikerslive.com

FELINE HYPERTHYROIDISM One of the commonest conditions to affect older cats is overactive thyroid glands, or “feline hyperthyroidism”. This is caused by an increase in production of thyroid hormones by the thyroid glands, which are located in the neck. Sean Wensley, PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon says: “Thyroid hormones regulate the body’s metabolic rate and general activity levels so overproduction causes cats to burn energy much faster than they would normally. This explains the most common sign of hyperthyroidism, which is weight loss despite a cat having an increased appetite and eating more.” Feline hyperthyroidism most commonly affects middle aged and older cats, and rarely affects cats younger than seven. As well as increased appetite and weight loss, other signs of the disease can include increased thirst, restlessness, irritability/aggression, mild to moderate diarrhoea and/or vomiting and poor coat condition. The disease affects all cats differently, so you may not see all these signs. Additionally, some of them can be signs of other illnesses, so if you notice any change in your cat’s habits, behaviour or appearance you should always visit your vet. If your vet suspects hyperthyroidism then blood tests are usually done to confirm the diagnosis. Luckily, the disease can often be treated very successfully, so if your cat is diagnosed your vet will advise what course of treatment is appropriate. There are three main options for treatment: 1. Daily medication (tablets) may be prescribed to regulate the levels of thyroid hormones; 2. Surgery may be recommended to remove an affected thyroid gland; or 3. In certain cases, radiotherapy may be recommended to destroy the abnormal thyroid tissue. Radiotherapy is uncommon as it can only be performed at one of a small number of licensed veterinary facilities in the UK. Sean continues: “Hyperthyroidism is very common in older cats, but by knowing the signs to look out for owners can ensure the disease is detected and treated, allowing a cat to resume a good quality of life in to their old age.” For more information about pet health, visit www.pdsa.org.uk/ petheatlh.

Homes &Gardens

The Mercury Newspaper - Homes & Gardens 2012

Guide2012

Perennials Which plant group is the backbone of the summer garden, delivering colour, fragrance and attracting the attention of beneficial wildlife and humans alike? The answer is perennials, that wonderful family of herbaceous plants that launch into life every spring.

Colour is key with perennials Think of the stars of borders in gardens big and small and the chances are they will be perennials. Colour is key with perennials – there is such a varied palette to choose from. It’s up to you to decide the mood you want as the garden backdrop to your life – the excitement or vibrancy of red, the romance of pink or the calm of blue and for a plant family that offers all of these and more, look no further than perennial Salvia or sage plants. Stunning colour and style Offering true perennial perfection, these are a wonderful choice for gardeners looking to bring stunning colour and style to their borders. There is an amazing range to select from, many of them Award of Garden Merit holders, so you can be sure of getting top performance. Now is a great time to plant container grown plants and many salvias are drought tolerant, once established. This makes them a fantastic asset if you are gardening in a drier area.

fully hardy across the UK, but others are less so and in certain areas may be better looked on as annuals. Your local garden centre will be delighted to help with advice. Sorts of Salvias Here are some suggestions: Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ – a wonderful perennial reaching about 75cm in height, bearing violet to purple flowers, fully hardy; Salvia officinalis – a foliage plant with culinary uses, evergreen and hardy, up to 80cm high; Salvia coccinea ‘Lady in Red’ – great for a summer show of red flowers (tender). The closely related ‘Lady in White’ bears white flowers. Salvia patens ‘Cambridge Blue is frost hardy (safe down to -5oC’) and produces very elegant, pale blue flowers. Salvia pratensis is a clump-forming perennial with a woody base. Up to 90cm in height and bearing flowers of violet, though in some case may be pink or white. Hardy. Salvia’s maintenance Salvias are a sun-loving plant, so grow in either full sun or dappled shade. Soils need to be well-drained and moderately fertile. Remove flowers once they have ‘gone over’ (dead heading) and trim in late spring any shoots that spoil symmetry.

angler’s corner

PARKLANDS POND

DONCASTER

by Clint Walker

Hopefully, if you read Anglers’ Mail, the UK’s biggest and best angling weekly, you will have seen our feature at Ladybower Reservoir Fly Fishery. David and the team at Ladybower made both myself and Angler’s Mail writer Gary Newman extremely welcome, and with the assistance of Paul Sissons and Steve Newsome, we even managed some fine trout despite awful fly fishing conditions. I can heartily recommend a visit to this fantastic fishery, set in stunning surroundings and it’s right on our doorstep! Give David Smith a ring on ????? to find out more or to book a guided session if it’s your first time with a fly rod; keep an eye for their open weekends too offering free tuition and the chance to wet a line. Having visited for what was only my second ever attempt at the noble art, the help I received has me seriously considering buying a fly set up to put it to use for pike, perch and chub in addition to trout....it really did open up a can of worms so to speak! This week saw the glorious 16th once more upon us; all across the country, many anglers will have been patiently waiting on the banks for the ‘all in’ at midnight to begin yet another river season. Personally, I think the close season per se is a bit of a waste of time nowadays; if it’s okay for the carp waters, clubs and commercials to open up year round, why not the rivers? I know there are the purists who will subscribe to a blanket close season (and I can appreciate that) across ALL venues to allow the fish to spawn in peace, but my feelings are that it will never happen when business means income for commercials and club waters. Besides, I’m not the fish have a calendar, and with the British weather no longer playing by the rules, I’m not sure a definitive period helps..... One thing I do abhor is the fact that whilst anglers are not on the banks during an enforced lay off, those who seek to take fish for the table ARE. I think that the time has come to argue for the abolition of the river break so that anglers who care about the environment and the fish who would otherwise be present, can help to deter those who care little for the ecology and natural beauty abundant in our river systems.....I hear countless tales of set lines, long lines and nets deployed with no fear of recourse during the times that anglers are absent; it needs to stop! I hope to see much more of the EA teams around the waterways and byways this year to help eradicate (or at least offer deterrent) , but sadly I’ve heard that government cuts are biting hard, so the reality will probably see even less sadly....Whilst I discuss the EA, I’d like to place on record my appreciation for the work carried out at Madelely Pool which suffered a silage contamination resulting in the deaths of many fish. The EA were part of a community who rallied round to save thousands of fish and secure the fishing for years to come; you may have seen it on the local and national news, so well done to all involved.

As always the big Royal meeting is ultra competitive but I have given some suggestions for each day from Wednesday to Saturday. I suggest that each way punting is worthwhile at this meeting as the odds usually permit this and, with uncertainty about the weather, there could be a few upsets. By the time you read this Frankel ought to have extended his unbeaten run in the Queen Anne Stakes on Tuesday but do not miss the appearance of the unbeaten Australian wonder mare Black Caviar, who is going for the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at 3.45 on Saturday. Unless the racing down under is below European standards (which I think is definitely not the case) I fully expect her to extend her unbeaten sequence. With so much racing it

However, not to be outdone Channel 4 is screening seven races from Ayr and Newmarket on Saturday while the BBC covers all the races from Royal Ascot on its terrestrial channels and BBCi (if you can get it) – giving a total of thirteen races on terrestrial TV.

OWLS TRAVEL TO DERBY ON OPENING DAY

OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk The newly-promoted Owls will kick off their Championship campaign next season with a trip to Derby County. The 2012-13 term begins on Saturday 18 August and Wednesday take the short hop to the Midlands to face the Rams at Pride Park. Two quickfire home games follow, with the Owls hosting Birmingham on Tuesday 21 August before Millwall land at Hillsborough four days later. Eye-catching fixtures include the visit of Yorkshire rivals Leeds on Saturday 20 October and a home clash with Nottingham Forest in early March. Dave Jones’ side are away on Boxing Day at Bolton and will wrap up their season on home soil on Saturday 4 May against Middlesbrough.

PEMBERTON BACK TO PREPARE BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

Returning to Shirecliffe Blades Academy Director of Coaching John Pemberton took time out to talk to BladesPlayer about many aspects of Academy life. He began by talking about last season; the interview in full will be available on BladesPlayer. “Our aim is to develop players,” Pemberton explained. “We are not judged on results necessarily but more on being able to provide players for the first team squad.” With a number of former Academy players already in the first team squad Pemberton is sure that more will follow.

WEDNESDAY TO FACE EUROPEAN GIANTS OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Sheffield Wednesday can confirm a second preseason friendly in Portugal next month against European giants Sporting Lisbon. The game will take place at Estadio Municipal de Albufeira on Sunday 22 July. The Owls will then take on newly-promoted Premiership side Reading in the same stadium, on Tuesday 24 July. Both games kick off at 8.00pm subject to change. Dave Jones’ men return to home soil to play Doncaster (a), West Brom (h) and Kilmarnock (a) ahead of the 2012-13 Championship campaign. “It’s been another exceptional year with five players being pushed through this summer, after the five players who were already involved with first team squad last season. “If we develop a player for the first team, then he must have the tools in place to perform. It’s not just about ability; it’s also about the complete person. Young players shouldn’t have distractions they should be able to concentrate on their football. If you want to be a professional footballer you have to put your heart and soul into it. Pemberton sees Harry Maguire as the perfect example of a player who wants to play. “I feel I have done my job properly when a player not just gets into the first team but stays there. I have been delighted he has stayed at Bramall lane, having fifty or so first team games on his CV is much better than thirty or forty reserve team games. He will just get better and better as a player playing competitive matches which in my opinion is what he should be doing.”

OWLS ACE WINS QUESTIONS PFA AWARD PLEASE OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Owls ace Jose Semedo has been named as the npower League 1 PFA Fans’ Player of the Year. The current SWFC Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year has added another award to his long list of accolades for the 2011-12 season. Up against some stiff competition, the Wednesday midfield general was rivalled for the coveted award by Alan Judge (Notts County), Jordan Rhodes (Huddersfield), Chris Solly (Charlton) and new Owls capture Kieran Lee, who impressed last term with former club Oldham. Gordon Talyor OBE, chief executive of the Professional Footballers’ Association of England and Wales and Honorary President of FIFPro said: “He was crowned Charlton Athletic’s Player of the Year in 2011 before joining Sheffield Wednesday where he has performed with distinction. He has been a key factor in Sheffield Wednesday’s promotion-winning season as well as rightly being voted their Player of the Year.” Congratulations once again, Jose!

BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

Planning for next season’s official matchday programme is underway and the Blades want fans to interact once more. Several new features are being considered for the npower League One campaign, which kicks off with a Bramall Lane encounter against Shrewsbury Town on Saturday 18 August. Programme editor, Kevin Cookson, says: “We received a lot of positive feedback from last season’s programme, from both supporters and collectors, but we remain committed to continue to improve. As well as speaking to supporters, we have taken on board comments from the recent fans survey and are attempting to deliver a product that Unitedites can be proud of. “Our programme will have a new feel, a new look and plenty of fresh features - something for Blades fans of all ages.” One of the new ideas is question and answer sessions with prominent Blades from the past…and we want Unitedites to come up with the questions they want to pose. Tony Kenworthy, Martin Smith and Carl Asaba are just three of the names that have agreed to be interviewed and you can send in your questions for the trio now to kevin.cookson@sufc.co.uk Kenworthy, of course, was one of the darlings of the 1970s and 80s, making 350 starts in a Blades shirt, whilst Smith’s time at the Lane was short, but he did score 15 goals in 30 starts at the end of the 1990s. Asaba is another to have an impressive scoring record for United, his 24 goals for the club included an 11-minute hat-trick after coming on as a substitute! Over the course of the 2012-13 campaign many other Blades stars of the past will be interviewed and sufc.co.uk will give supporters sufficient time to submit a question. In addition, Unitedites are also being given the opportunity to have their holiday snaps printed in the official matchday programme. Over the years, United’s programme has carried photos of Blades fans on their travels, far and wide. We’ve had loads of photos of supporters in exotic locations showing off their true colours, whilst in the season just gone, there was a page dedicated to holiday snaps in the majority of issues. This season we are continuing this tradition so if you are on your travels soon don’t forget your camera and Blades gear and send us your pictures, plus a few words about your holiday and who is on the snap. If you want your summer snaps in United colours in the programme, send them to kevin.cookson@sufc. co.uk and we’ll endeavour to use them when the new campaign kicks off.

EVANS MAKE TRIO AVAILABLE MILLERS NEWS www.themillers.co.uk

Manager Steve Evans has said that trio Ryan Cresswell, Danny Schofield and Jamie Annerson are ‘free to further their career elsewhere’. Evans took the difficult decision to circulate their names this morning after meeting individually with all three to tell them they are free to move on. “The lads have been offered the opportunity to further their careers elsewhere,” Evans told Millers Player. “Basically what I have said to the lads is that we don’t see them getting the first team football that perhaps they would expect. We have to be open and honest with them, they have the options now to move on permanently, we are not going to entertain anybody taking them on loan. Every club in the Football League and Conference have been made aware that these lads are available on a free transfer, so we will see what happens.” Whilst Evans has made all three available, he refused any notion that the trio would be frozen out if they did not find new employers. “We will certainly treat these players right,” added Evans. “One thing that Steve Evans does is he treats his players and staff properly.” ‘Keeper Annerson had already been informed he could move on at the end of last season and Evans confirmed there was interest in the former Sheffield United stopper. “We have had interest, and we are talking to one or two clubs now,” confirmed Evans.

LATE DECISION FOR LIONEL MILLERS NEWS www.themillers.co.uk

It was a move that Millers boss Steve Evans thought was dead, but he has traffic on the M25 to thank for giving him the time to resurrect a deal for Lionel Ainsworth. Ainsworth, who put pen-to-paper at Mangham House this afternoon, was travelling to sign for a League One club before encountering heavy traffic on the motorway. The delay in signing gave Evans his opportunity and after meeting with the former Shrewsbury player again, he eventually got his man. “The move came about all of a sudden to be honest,” admitted Lionel to Millers Player. “I was stuck in some traffic on my way to sign for another club so I decided to turn my car around, before explaining to the club that I couldn’t get through the traffic. I then received a text from the gaffer here saying would I like to meet him and over the weekend I thought, why not?” Ainsworth becomes the Millers eighth signing of the close season with Evans admitting that he was one of players right at the top of his summer shopping list. “He (Evans) really sold the club to me,” continued Lionel. “As a player I have been in the stands watching for 90 minutes, but just watching him because he is just really passionate about his job. That is what you want from a manager, someone who really believes. I have spoken to players who have played for him previously and they say he is a good manager, he is ambitious so hopefully we can be successful.”

ROVERS OPEN NEW SEASON AT WALSALL ROVERS NEWS www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk

The eagerly awaited release of all English domestic fixtures in the Football League and Premier League has handed Rovers a trip to West Midlands side Walsall on the opening day. Rovers’ first home game of the season will be against Bury on Tuesday 21st August followed by Crawley Town on 25th August which is the first Saturday home game of the season. The festive period is always a busy time for football clubs - and for Doncaster Rovers it has handed the side clashes away at Oldham Athletic on Boxing Day and Sheffield United at the Keepmoat Stadium on New Year’s Day. The Rovers last home game will see Notts County visit the Keepmoat Stadium for the final clash on South Yorkshire soil, followed by a trip to Griffin Park for the season finale against Brentford.
