OUTSTANDING ENTERTAINMENT AT SHEFTIVAL THIS SUMMER M.V. MOBILITY Only if you’ve been under a rock this month would have not heard about the festival extravaganza that is coming to South Yorkshire this August. ‘Sheftival’ is set to be the biggest outdoor experience of music, culture and sport in celebration of the Olympics, taking place at the Don Valley Complex in Sheffield on 4th and 5th August. Stretching a vast site of 25 acres, Sheftival boasts seven stages, over 1,000 performers, 20 sports, three markets, a huge fairground, a variety of food stalls, twelve bars, a giant bungee and so much more. This is the Olympic Games done festival style and a guaranteed great day out for families, friends, couples and everyone else in between. From as little as £10 a ticket, it’s an exceedingly good deal! Don Valley Bowl is the Tramlines Arena featuring a colourful collection of music including a star-studded pop concert programmed by Real Radio; world music on the JuJu Club Stage; acoustic sets on the Busker’s Barge; a Jamaican jerk BBQ and soundsystem; Monkey Bump dance tent and a

Sharrow Family Village where children can make their own costume for the Sunday carnival. The line-up so far includes Toots and the Maytals, Macka B, The Lightning Seeds, Dodgy, The Beat, The Selecter, The Crookes, Kanda Bongo Man, Laura Steel, Balkan Badits and so many more being added on a daily basis at www. sheftival.com The English Institute of Sport Sheffield will be the base for South Yorkshire’s biggest ever sports participation event. Two pop-up boxing rings, an inflatable hockey pitch and crazy golf will feature among havea-go sessions in sports with Sheffield Eagles rugby league, athletics, basketball, wheelchair basketball, Futsal, British judo, taekwondo, table tennis, Zumba, dancing, climbing, boccia, football and zorb balls. Welcoming Olympic squads to compete against each other, the Sheftival of Sport continues into the Don Valley Stadium with even more sports and activities taking place on the pitch. You can even watch the Olympic Games on a 48 sq metre screen!

A ticket to Sheftival will grant you free access to iceSheffield, a demonstration by the Sheffield Steelers ice hockey team and the biggest foam party in the country! With a crazy mixture of music, sport, civic pride, food, drink and entertainment, Sheftival is a great excuse for communities of South Yorkshire and beyond to get together and celebrate our ability to throw the most friendly, energetic and inclusive of all parties. The concept of Sheftival is totally unique. Where else can you watch over 30 massive artists perform, take part in loads of sporting activities and watch the Olympic Games on a 48 sq meter screen?

NICKI MINAJ Weekly Wit Hot on the heels of 2 sold out Hammersmith shows and an incredible performance at Radio 1 Hackney Weekend, multi platinum selling superstar Nicki Minaj has announced an 8 date UK Arena tour this October/November. The ‘Pink Friday Reloaded’ Tour will stop in Sheffield at the Motorpoint Arena on Saturday 3rd November. Tickets priced £39.50 (subject to booking fee) go on sale Friday 29th June at 9am. 2011 was an incredible year for Nicki, with her multi-platinum selling debut album PINK FRIDAY boasting the most charted singles by any female rap album in Billboard history. Nicki also became the first artist to have 7 singles on the Billboard HOT 100 chart simultaneously. In addition to winning Best Hip Hop Video at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards along with Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album and Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Artist at the 2011 American Music Awards, Nicki was recently nominated for three Grammys for Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Album Her second studio album the certified Gold Selling ‘Pink Friday…Roman Reloaded’ was released in April this year, crashing straight to number 1 in the UK charts. It has already spawned one of the most successful singles of the year – ‘Starships’ which is 3 x platinum in the UK, was top 20 on iTunes in more than 40 countries and to date has received 41 million views online. Videos for tracks ‘Beez in The Trap’ and ‘Right By My Side’ have received 46 million and 25 million views respectively online. Her latest single ‘Pound The Alarm’ will be released July 9th. Minaj, unarguably the most exciting, colourful and larger than life artist to emerge in recent years, has just wowed crowds with her main stage performance at Radio 1’s Hackney Big Weekend on Saturday and last night kicked off her first ever UK tour with a sell out show at London’s HMV Hammersmith Apollo, with a second sell-out show at the same venue this evening. With almost 4 million albums sold, 20 million likes on Facebook, 13 million followers on Twitter and a global profile growing by the day, 2012 is the year this 5’ 2” phenomenon truly arrived. Tickets for Niki Minaj at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield go on sale 9am on Friday 29th June priced at £39.50 (subject to booking fee) and are available in online at www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk , by phone on 0114 256 5656 and in person at the Arena box office.

My local chemist says “Open 24/7” on the sign What sodding use is that? I have a migraine right now and cannot wait until the last week of July. Two women met for the first time since graduating from high school. One asked the other, “You were always so organized in school, did you manage to live a well planned life? “ “ Yes,” said her friend. “My first marriage was to a millionaire; my second marriage was to an actor; my third marriage was to a preacher; and now I’m married to an undertaker.” Her friend asked, “What do those marriages have to do with a well planned life?” “One for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go.” A wife asked her husband: “What do you like most in me, my pretty face or my sexy body?” He looked at her from head to toe and replied: “I like your sense of humour.” Yesterday I went to the doctor for my yearly physical. My blood pressure was high, my cholesterol was high, I’d gained some weight, and I didn’t feel so hot. My doctor said eating right doesn’t have to be complicated and it would solve my physical problems. He said just think in colours; Fill your plate with bright colours; greens, yellows, reds, etc. I went right home and ate an entire bowl of M&M’s and sure enough, I felt better immediately. I never knew eating right could be so easy.

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

Pendulum Power I have always been fascinated by the power of the Pendulum! I have five pendulums. My chakra has five colours and looks quite masculine I use this when reading for men. I have a crystal rose quartz called Mekrkbar for ladies, and my favourite is a yellow citrine called Angelica - this is my personal pendulum. I also have a Russian one which is made from the willow tree, which I use less frequently, and lastly a green Aventurine with red jasper flecks in it which I save for special uses. Pendulum Power A pendulum is the tool used for dowsing. Professor Tom Lethbridge was a man who professed a healthy scepticism for all aspects of the Paranormal, but he had a secret- a passion for dowsing. At the risk of being ridiculed Lethbridge devoted his life to exploring the Power of the Pendulum as a divining device. He tested the theory by hiding coins in a wood, and asking his friends to find the coins by using the pendulum - and they succeeded! In France physicians have been known to use the pendulum to assist them in making a medical diagnosis. It is considered a science throughout Europe and known as Radiesthesis. Gender Of An Unborn Baby Many people have used a pendulum to determine the sex of a unborn child by holding the pendulum over the pregnant woman’s stomach. If the pendulum swings from side to side, this indicates a girl and a circular motion means a boy is on his way! I use the citrine pendulum regularly in my psychic work for this purpose and find it very accurate. Finding Lost Pets It is heartbreaking to lose a pet. When they pass over you know they are gone, but when they get lost and you don’t know where they are it can be harder to cope. If they are chipped there is a chance of being united with the owner. I

have found two dogs by way of the pendulum. A lady from Oxford contacted me when her Staffordshire Bull Terrier went missing. When I meditated I was led to Gorton in Manchester. I got out a map out and the pendulum started swirling round when it passed over Gorton. The dog was subsequently found in some high rise flats there. My other success was a little sadder. A little Border Terrier called Lucy had chased a rabbit and got lost. She suffered from fits and needed medication. Again I asked for a sign, and I was led to Skellow in Doncaster and the image of a man with a blue car picking her up. Then I was shown an elderly couple with Lucy. A few weeks however later I saw Lucy`s spirit. I told the owner, and she said this confirmed what she had been told by another medium. So at least the owner had the comfort of knowing that she had died peacefully in the care of a loving elderly couple. How Does The Pendulum Work? Just as a television picks up signals so does the pendulum. The powerful pendulum is an antenna that receives vibrations and energy waves emitted by people, places and thoughts. Some people call it divining, believing that the information comes from divine source. Their customer service team will take your address and payment details. You can pay using most debit or credit cards. You can also email your contact details to: sheffieldenquiries@veolia.co.uk and they will call you back to take your payment. The charge is £1.20 per sack including VAT. There is a minimum order quantity of 10 sacks. The maximum number is 100 sacks. Your sacks will be delivered within five working days of your payment being received. Any sacks you buy must be used before the service ends in December 2012. STEP 2 - FILL YOUR SACKS Please help us to recycle as much green waste as possible by only putting the items listed below in your clear sacks: YES PLEASE: Grass mowings Hedge and Plant clippings Leaves Prunings Small branches Twigs Weeds and cut flowers Chipped bark Please do not put any of the items below in your clear sacks as they cannot be accepted at the composting facility and your clear sacks will not be collected: NO THANKS Food waste Household waste Japanese Knotweed Plant pots and garden gnomes Plastic bags and packaging STEP 3 - COLLECTION To arrange for your clear sacks to be collected please ring Veolia’s Call Centre between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday on: 0114 273 4567. You can leave between 5 and 10 sacks per collection. Veolia will collect your sacks within 10 working days. Please put your clear sacks out by 7am on the next working day after your call. Please put your clear sacks on the front boundary of your property, where Veolia can see them and access them from the roadside. If you do not have a front garden please put your sacks in a location that is at the front of your property and which will be visible from

the roadside. Please do not block footpaths or grass verges. Only green waste contained in the clear sacks purchased from Veolia’s Call Centre will be collected. Any other sacks or extra waste will not be taken. If you have an ‘assisted service’ for medical or age related reasons then please let our Call Centre know so that this service can be provided for your clear sacks.

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR GARDEN WASTE? Green waste collected in Sheffield is sent to composting sites across the City. The green waste is made into high grade compost and used by commercial landscapers, the Local Authority, and can be bought by home gardeners. Here is how they do it: Garden waste is delivered to the sites where it is shredded. The shredded garden waste is put into large piles. The garden waste generates heat as it breaks down into compost. This process kills any unwanted bacteria. The piles are then turned regularly to help with the composting process. After 12 weeks, the compost is ready to be used as a very useful soil conditioner. HOME COMPOSTING Before you put your garden waste into the green bin why not consider a compost bin and give your garden a treat! Composting transforms your kitchen and garden rubbish into a nutrient rich food for your garden. Compost is easy to make and improves your soil’s condition and your plants and flowers will love it. All you need to get started is a compost bin and some outdoor space. To find out more about home composting and how you can buy a bargain compost bin please go to: www.veoliaenvironmentalservices.co.uk/ Sheffield/Reducing-your-waste/Homecomposting/.

SO YOU THINK YOU KNOW ABOUT THE POLICE COMMISSIONER? A new campaign has been launched in South Yorkshire to raise awareness of the role and impact of the forthcoming Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC). The ‘Think PCC’ campaign, led by South Yorkshire Police Authority, is designed to help highlight the new role and encourage the public to have their say when it comes to choosing the county’s first PCC. The commissioner will replace the county’s Police Authority, taking over the role of holding the police force and the Chief Constable to account. Ahead of the November election to choose the PCC, the Police Authority will be attending a number of events across the county to raise awareness of the new role and to consult on residents’ policing priorities. Bill Wilkinson, South Yorkshire Police Authority chief executive, said: “This will be the biggest reform in policing for more than a quarter of a century so we are ensuring we get out into the community to highlight the forthcoming role and the changes it will bring with it. Their first priority for the PCC will be to approve the Police and Crime Plan for 2013/14. Other duties will include deciding how the policing budget is spent and consulting the public and victims of crime on community safety. The PCC will have a stronger role in commissioning and managing service contracts from partner organisations than the current Police Authority, reflecting their wider intended role within the criminal justice system. The Police Authority is currently preparing the office for the PCC and is managing the process through a joint transition board with South Yorkshire Police and partners. Members of the public will be able to vote for their chosen PCC on November 15, with the person elected taking office a week later. For more information on the Police Authority visit www.southyorks.gov.uk or follow the Police Authority on Twitter @sypoliceauth

HELPING HEROES IN STOCKSBRIDGE There will be a stall this Saturday, Armed Services Day, on Stocksbridge High Street to raise funds for the Help for Heroes charity. Stall organiser Dawn Allen told Mercury Newspaper: “This is for our soldiers returning injured and maimed from wars. “We'll be opposite Greens from 9am onwards. Anyone can help by donating money directly, and there will also be collection boxes in local shops and cafes. We will pass all profits to Help for Heroes in an effort to make a difference to their lives. “We also welcome people giving us cakes to sell, or buying our plants and products on the day - and we're looking for people with ideas for organising a sponsored event! “Whatever your political views on these wars, these lads and lasses do need our help.” For more information, contact Dawn via the “Don Valley Cottage” page on Facebook.

WELCOME to our June edition of The Wedding Guide... We are almost half way through the year already, and it looks like the summer is never going to arrive, we had a beautiful two weeks in March and one in May, and that’s it! All its done since then is rain…rain…. rain. We all deserve some sunshine, it makes you feel better. The smell of bbq’s, and everyone is smiling. The kind of weather that every bride dreams of for her wedding day. Well we can keep dreaming …….. Our Guide is proving to be a great success Most of the service providers on this page say we have put them firmly on the map, by being part of this monthly feature, and opened up a whole new world, so come on all you brides to be, there must be someone on this guide who has got what you are looking for. There are plenty on this page to choose from, last month Abigail in Swallownest was interested in any venue that has a Marquee, the one I recommended was the beautiful Aston Hall Hotel. If any of you need any help finding things or have some advice to pass on, please let us know. So we can all share your views on this page. Please share your highs and lows, your good and bad , I want to hear all about it and so do the other readers. Send me your success stories, or photographs of your special day. Email me mandy@ mercurynewspaper.co.uk It is your page as well as mine. The guide will be published the last Wednesday of the month throughout the summer until September, and will be full of helpful advice and information to help you plan your special day. Don’t forget to put the Mercury Wedding Fair at the Hillsborough Stadium on Sunday 16th September in your diary, if you are looking for ideas for a 2013 wedding, or last minute extra’s for a late wedding this year, it is sure to be a large prestigious event. Entry is free, and we will give you a complimentary glass of bucks fizz for the Bride and Groom, as a warm welcome. If you are an exhibitor, I still have space available for florists, cars and jewellery at extremely competitive rates so call me now for further details. Last months topic was Budget The average wedding is said to cost £20.000. I can imagine how easy it is to get carried away and reach that amount. Obviously, you don’t have to spend that much, some venues are offering the whole package for under £2000, so it can be as extravagant or as intimate as you want. This month I am talking about Hen and Stag nights The traditional, last night of freedom for both the Bride and the Groom, used to be the Thursday before the actual wedding, but my how things have changed….. Instead of a quiet meal or drink with family and friends at the local pub, it seems a week in Ibiza or a game of golf in Portugal are top of the list for some people It is purley a personal decision, but I cannot think of anything worse than a week in Ibiza, so induced with alcohol that I cannot remember the sand sea or

sunshine. If I am going to drink myself into oblivion, I may aswel save on the holiday fare and do it at the local, however some people feel the need to push the boat out, but I would rather spend the money on the wedding itself, giving everyone something to remember. There are many other options, The Mercury for instance hold a Dirty Dancing Event where the girls get a meal, and 3 sexy dance lessons, see our main advert for more details. You Hens may prefer a quiet meal with friends or family, or even a spa day. The choice is endless. Most Stags prefer a pint, and are more likely to take a long weekend away with the lads, if that is the case, make sure you get them to plan it well in advance of the wedding, just in case they miss their flights or suffer a holiday tummy etc. What ever it is you do …….enjoy Moving onto our pages this week, Many of our advertisers in this feature have been in the business for a number of years and can offer you experience, value and customer service, but mainly, their aim is to help make your day the most memorable, special occasion. I have had the pleasure of working along side most of these people, and have witnessed their dedication, passion and commitment to making your day special Venues are generally one of the first things on your list to choose, as this will be the main focus of the event. They are also booked up well in advance, up to 3 years in some cases, so its never to early to view them. Large, small, grand or intimate, each wedding is different, and each venue can offer different things depending on your requirements. It is always good to view a couple of venues in mind, and go and view them, more than once if need be. The proprietor will be more than happy to show you around, and talk through your requirements until you are happy with your choice. The Sitwell Arms at Renishaw …. Are proud sponsors of our Wedding Guide, and they provide quality facilities at affordable prices. It is a beautiful 18th century coaching inn with beautiful surroundings, perfect for the photographs. The Old Rectory in Handsworth is set in beautiful surroundings, whether you want a buffet or a banquet, this venue can cater for 5 for 150 guests. The Burghwallis in Doncaster has extensive grounds for photograph opportunities, as well as a civil licence and facilities to cater for up to 120 guests. Looking for a venue with a difference? The Kiveton and Wales Parish Hall offer you the whole package for one cost, so check them out. Other venues include, the Earl Marshall and The Sherwood who offer value for money wedding receptions with the best in service and attention. Sarah at All Seated venue dressing in Swallownest sure knows how to dress a table and a venue. Her twinkle backdrops are the show piece of any wedding, and I have seen them, from grand to dainty, Sarah has dressed them all. All seated also provide bridal jewellery and hair accessories, as well as cards, gifts and balloons, and much more, so visit her showroom, you will be spoilt for choice and well looked after. See you next month…..Mandy

The symbols have changed over time. For example in the United Kingdom, diamond was a well known symbol for the 75th anniversary, but this changed to the now more common 60th anniversary after Queen Victoria's 60 years on the throne was widely marked as her Diamond Jubilee. The origins of the current gift conventions date to 1937. Before that, only the 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 50th, and 75th anniversaries had an associated gift. In 1937, the American National Retail Jeweler Association (now known as Jewelers of America as a result of an organizational merger) introduced an expanded list of gifts. The revamped list gave a gift for each year up to the 20th, and then for every fifth anniversary after that.

Years & Gifts

The names of some anniversaries provide guidance for appropriate or traditional gifts for the spouses to give each other; if there is a party these can be brought by the guests or influence the theme or decoration. These gifts vary in different countries, but some years have well-established connections now common to most nations: 5th Wooden, 10th Tin, 15th Crystal, 20th China, 25th Silver, 30th Pearl, 40th Ruby, 50th Golden, 60th Diamond. The tradition may have originated in medieval Germany where, if a married couple lived to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their wedding, the wife was presented by her friends and neighbours with a silver wreath to congratulate them for the good fortune that had prolonged the lives of the couple for so many years. On celebration of the 50th, the wife received a wreath of gold. Over time the number of symbols expanded and the German tradition came to assign gifts that had direct connections with each stage of married life.

LOVELY LAVATERA

Classic, fresh plant Get ready for summer fun this July with the help of a classic, yet always fresh plant - Lavatera. Popular name mallow, it’s a fantastic, floriferous shrub that grows quickly and vigorously. An established specimen may put on thousands of flowers, each one of which is a delight to the eye and a draw for bees and other beneficial insects. This characteristic makes it popular with children or the child in all of us! Who doesn’t want to do their bit to help our friends the bees – we’d be in trouble without them. Mallow maintenance Mallows are true sun-worshippers and also thrive in drier soils. Once established they are happy in droughty conditions (but keep them watered as they settle in). Drought tolerance cuts down on the worry of watering, especially if you’re going away and contributes to their credentials as ‘sustainable’ plants for today’s gardens. Another tick in the box for sustainability is that because they attract beneficial insects, they are a great companion plant to grow with roses. As well as complementing the fabulous blooms, their power to bring in beneficial insects will help to invite natural pest control into your garden.

The vigorous growth and copious flowering is very rewarding and the fact that hard pruning in early spring will be rewarded by vigorous new growth and even more flowers in the coming summer will help a novice to get their confidence with the pruning shears.

MINI DIGGERS FOR HIRE

Mix between refuge and entertainment If you’ve got school-aged children anywhere near you’ll need no reminding that school breaks up for the long hols this month. With this in mind, the garden can serve as both a refuge and a destination for entertainment, depending on your own priorities. Buying and planting flowering shrubs is a fun activity in its own right and will deliver instant results and brighten any border. With options on offer like Lavatera, what are you waiting for?

CLUBS AND SOCIAL NETWORKING The rapid growth of people using social networking sites has led many clubs to ask what committees can do about members using their phones or computers to make critical and offensive remarks about the club or individual committee members. Some businesses have disciplined and even sacked employees for remarks made on Facebook or Twitter; Employment Tribunals have ruled some of them as fair dismissals as employers successfully claimed the remarks harmed their organisations. A club’s rule book is paramount in governing the relationship between a member and the club as it is in effect a contract between both parties. If a member has an issue with the club or the management of its affairs that member should

pursue it through constitutional channels, as the rules provide, and not resort to posting questionable remarks on a networking site; the club’s management should also deal with the issue within the strict context of the rules. The standard misconduct rule in the Union’s model club rules were obviously formulated before Facebook and Twitter became everyday features of life and the National Executive intends to consider whether the rule still fits the bill and to question whether there is any fundamental difference between postings on networking sites which are readily accessible or which leak into the public domain and, on the other hand, similar remarks bandied about by word of mouth. Some of these remarks may be “mere tittle tattle” but others, particularly if malicious

and/or unsubstantiated, can gain common currency and may, with little or no foundation, damage a club’s reputation. In such a case it is understandable that club management would be inclined to react.Club committees may wish to consider, as a first step, summoning the author or authors of the offending remarks to account for themselves before contemplating any formal disciplinary action.

Hi Readers! Took a trip up to the Butchers Arms, Marsh Lane Eckington recently – and it has certainly changed! I was chatting to the landlord Phil, and his lovely wife Bev. In the four months since they took over, they’ve introduced an excellent menu six days per week, with a very reasonable “Buy One get One Free” offer, and added a super Sunday Lunch. There are lovely beer gardens with swings and a bouncy castle to keep the kids amused, and if you go up on Wednesday there is a great “Open Mic” Night. I went on Saturday, as there is now live entertainment weekly, and the well-known Mr Steve Black did the first half, followed by his daughter, Chrissie May, who has come on in leaps and bounds recently. A great vocal talent who is developing in confidence and promises to be a

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques

This week we launched our new website. There’s still some work to do on filling in all the sections and making it interactive but it is at least current and looks pretty good. Visit the new website at www. radionightingale.org.uk We’re also on Facebook and Twitter so you can Like us at www. facebook.com/radionightingale or send us a Tweet to @ nightingale1350. As the season of summer fetes and gales is fast approaching it seems the right time to mention the Radio Nightingale What’s On Guide. Broadcast on Wednesdays each week throughout the year, we share the details of events in South Yorkshire with our listeners for when they are feeling better. If you’re organising an event and would like us to include the details please phone, write or email to whatsonguide@ radionightingale.org.uk all the important information in good time.

popular regular on the club scene before very long – in fact she went down so well on the night that the crowd didn’t want Steve back on! Good Luck Phil & Bev – you’re doing a great job and I hope you get in the crowds you deserve! That’s all from me for this week folks. Paul (Rocky Horror)

OBITUARY - JOE MEADOWS Born in Wigan in 1950 lived there until he was 3 years old Joe moved to Swallownest with his parents then to Arbouthorne where he married Christine, had 3 sons, Simon, Paul and Tony. He then moved back to Wigan with his second wife Cora, where he died age 62. He was on the committee as a secretary at Upper Heeley WMC for 10 years where he was best known. He was also the agent for Simpson variety agency in Leeds, and he was the first person to bring Chubby Brown to Sheffield, along with Alvin Stardust, Bob Monkhouse and many other artists. He will be sadly missed.

GOING TO GRACELAND MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

It was one of the most ground breaking albums ever released. Released at a time when his own writing and playing career had been going through a quiet and mainly unsuccessful period, Graceland featured a unique mix of so many styles of music Paul Simon had been listening to. Much of the release, his 7th solo studio piece of work, was put together in South Africa, quite an achievement in itself during 1986. Tracks included the country’s musicians and groups along with the Everly Brothers, Los Lobos and Linda Ronstadt. Hit singles lifted from the album included ‘The Boy in the Bubble’ and of course ‘You can call me Al’ with comedian Chevy Chase lipsynced to Simon’s vocals on the accompanying memorable video. To mark a quarter of a century since this historic and highly acclaimed album hit the UK’s Number One spot, it’s back out again and repackaged into a commemorative sleeve and we’re giving you a chance to win it all through this week. Simply listen for one of the winning Paul Simon hit songs, be a lucky 9th caller and it’s yours.

B.T. HAL - THE ʻGENIAL AUTOCRATʼ CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

I’ve been remembering the Reverend Henry Solly over the past two weeks as we mark the CIU’s 150th anniversary. Looking back to the organization’s formative years wouldn’t be complete without mentioning another great man who left his mark- Mr. B.T. Hall. His strong leadership style combined with pleasant and helpful manner to those seeking assistance in the club movement gained him the title of the “Genial Autocrat”. He served as General Secretary from 1893 to 1929. He had more in common with the majority of club members than his predecessors, being from the same social class, the first proper working class leader of the organization. He made his mark by helping the CIU to gain strength and stability and become a true Union with the establishment of regional branches. His work was central in ensuring the continuation of clubs well into the 20th century. He also worked on promoting the respectability of the CIU and its clubs, with its model rules and regulations that were being developed and fine-tuned during his time in office. He visited numerous clubs around the country, offering practical support and assistance as well as a friendly manner. One example is the Darlington Club and Institute, set up by a group of railwaymen in 1901. They held their first meeting in Frarey’s cocoa rooms, Tub Well Row, Darlington and decided to affiliate to the CIU. B.T. Hall visited the club and supplied the first committee with model rules, books and literature on the working and management of a club. This was what the CIU did but when possible, B.T. Hall provided that personal touch to welcome and nurture new clubs coming into the CIU fold. He felt that some clubs failed because in places like London, there were too many rival attractions but generally he identified the failure in the fact that some clubs were not spontaneously originated and democratically controlled. Without democratically elected committees and members having their say in the running of their club, disagreements could easily bring about their closure. B.T. Hall steered the CIU through some turbulent times with some legal battles related to changes in licensing laws. Criticisms and attacks on the CIU were frequent, usually emanating from people who didn’t know much about the club movement and what it stood for. Some were against the spread of working men’s clubs, believing them to be solely about the promoting subsidized drinking. B.T. Hall continually strove to dispel that myth and emphasize the responsible nature of CIU clubs and all they had to offer.

HEART OF A COWARD CORPORATION 31/05/12

REVIEW

Words by Katy Evans

A hot, humid night is slap bang at the top of the menu tonight at Sheffield’s Corporation, delivering a collection of some of harcore’s most brutally kick ass upcoming bands. With the line up consisting of Martyr Defiled and Heart Of A Coward packed into the small room, the room was well and truly dripping with sweat...yum. Martyr Defiled seem to have been a little quiet on the music scene recently, but with the announcement of a new EP set to be released later on in the year it’s a dead cert that we’ll be seeing much more of them in the near future. Right from the opening riffs of their half hour long set, front man Matthew Jones throws himself around the stage like a pissed off circus tiger, harboring enough passion and energy to rival some of Corp’s megastar names who have historically graced its stages. MD who are sounding pretty damn tight tonight start off with a few older releases, undoubtedly playing the crowd into their own hands. The classic ‘hard to please’ Sheffield audience soon get into the swing of things, but with relentless guitars and soul shaking drops aplenty, who the Hell could stay still?! Egging their time to shine, the certified highlight of their set was hearing some new material which will be on their new EP. Described as ‘groovy shit’, groovy it was...shit – it most certainly was not! This is where the walls really started sweating as everyone in the room bounced along to the belters, with front man Matt telling the audience to ‘lose your mind’ Last up, the headline act Heart Of A Coward. From Milton Keynes this hard hitting 5 piece metalcore outfit are steadily on the up-rise. With ex Sylosis vocalist Jamie Graham taking the helm last year, we’ll nick your line Orange and quote ‘the futures bright….’ Starting the gig with a collection of more melodically swayed tracks, the place felt like a pressure cooker waiting to burst open into an energetically riled frenzy. A more static front man than the previous band but non the less just as statuesque, Heart Of A Coward were the puppet masters to a crowd who were totally buying what they were offering out to all who played witness. With vocals that make your blood boil and every hair on your body stand on end, Jamie filled every single gap in the room...Hell if you’d have opened the door it probably would have splintered onto the street corner. Once the faster paced songs kicked in, the floor was like an ice rink. Two stepping was proving even more dangerous tonight. With the evening coming to a sweaty raw climax, no one can say that HOAC didn’t absolutely kill their hugely enticing live set. With a new album ready to pre-order, these guys are sure to be making a big impact on the scene in the remaining half of 2012.

Words by Katy Evans

Arguably one of the most inspirationally pioneering and enticing groups of a generation of guitar fueled, rhythmically challenged music, Blink 182 brought their explosive live show to Sheffield´s Motorpoint Arena on 17th June. Having blossomed into a trio of hugely celebrated musical legends, support came in the form of Scottish screamers Twin Atlantic along with beyond bizarre Tyson Ritter´s All American Rejects. Although slipping somewhat under the single releasing radar in the last few years, Blink 182 were only ever going to totally fill out the entire capacity of the arena. A group who harbor an undoubtable under ground stretch, the US three - piece´s show was rearranged back from last July due to illness, therefore had to ensure fans were whole - heartedly satisfied...and hell did they deliver. Seizing the plectrum as an opening slot for such a celebrated night, Twin Atlantic. Serving up a selection of belters off their debut studio album, the group´s most infamous tune ´Free´saw a close to a set much more worthy than first slot support. So it´s pretty easy to follow trends on Twitter right? And if you´re into your international musical characters, raise your guitar shredding mitts of rock to Tyson Ritter. We´ve all know All American Rejects were...how to put this pleasantly...wired up wrong, however their forty five minute set as headline support for Blink 182 well and truly confirmed this. Alarm bells screaming at a rock star who could quite easily be slipping beyond the barrier of normality, his eccentricity rubbed off to a tremdous effect upon their performance. Declaring ´do you guys not know how to party´proceeded by ´we´re a sexy kind of a band...in a deep sexual way...´their flop of a strange set concluded with ´This Is Hell,´which confirmed All American Rejects as easily one of the most fruit loopy bands about. Opening their hugely anticipated headline show with ´Feeling This,´a more suitable, fitting belter could not have been more appropriate for their entire two hour long set. Blasting into the stage with their trade mark geeky personas, drummer Travis Barker oozed cool with his rhythmic sections throughout What´s My Age Again, All The Small things and I Miss You. With each and every tune delivering as much brute energy and force as their opening track, the band exploited their light engineer to succumb to one hell of a light show...it´s easy for a band to sound insular and captured within four walls, however this only seemed to heighten Blink 182´s hugely fiery and piercing live sound. Parting the standing crowd towards the latter part of their twenty song set, audience members took on the role of wild caged animal when the group (minus Travis) performed an intricate show of Reckless and Going Away To College. This is exactly what makes Blink 182 that little bit different...ok ok so they´re one of the biggest and most celebrated rock bands in the world, however still maintain a closeness and heartfelt thank to their huge fan base across the world, a factor almost unseen in world renowned groups these days. Closing their set with ´Carousel´and ´Dammit,´Blink 182 brought together Sheffield´s hardcore fan base, resulting in easily one of the best live shows the Arena has seen in heap loads of time...apart from Steps. They kicked ass.

REVIEW

round-up by stuart renton

First up this week is a bit of a rant about this whole Jimmy Carr offshore money thing. Let’s be absolutely honest, if there was a way you could pay less TAX, you would. It’s as simple as that. Sorry, let me clarify: if there was a way you could legally pay less TAX, you would. No one wants to pay Taxes; the Government takes more than enough away from us as it is and Carr did nothing but follow a loop hole in the law which allowed him to save a bit of his hard-earned cash. The media is quite content to manipulate the facts to suit its agenda and it’s the way this whole issue was handled, with its black and white standards, that really makes me sick. The media’s recent moral quagmire seem to have been put on hold as they take the high ground, along with the current generation of corrupt politicians who are quick off the mark to brush their own malpractices under the carpet while pointing the accusing finger at others. It’s misdirection of the most appalling quality. Ultimately, Carr did nothing wrong; he didn’t do anything illegal, yet he’s been treated as a criminal by the papers who are acting as though he sold his own children into sex slavery. And thus neatly on to a review of The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, the live stage show that brings all the original radio play cast back together for what could very well be the last time in a triumphant recreation of Douglas Adams’ beloved work. The two hour show is performed with such energy and the script covers all of the Hitch-Hikers’ books in a clever adaptation that will keep you laughing from start to finish. You can really tell the cast adore what they do and that they love the Hitch-Hikers (after all, it’s been a life-time career for some of them). Of course, it’s far funnier when they cock up, not because we’re a bunch of miserable Vogons who want to see the show fail, but because the actors genuinely rally together in moments of disaster, and seeing Christopher Timothy as “the Book” who found the script more than a mouthful, was a true delight as he struggled, albeit it professionally, through the minefield of names and places of the Hitch-Hikers’ universe. My only criticism of the whole show was that it was on for so few nights around the country and with such little publicity, it was gone before it even got going. It didn’t even come to Sheffield at all! A crying shame as there’s an awful lot of fans who will never get the chance to see this phenomenal show! Summary: Unmissable. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the work of Adams recreated live on stage with the original radio show players. It’s done flawlessly with a veteran cast. Go see it - you’ll probably never get another chance. Check it out: http://www.hitchhikerslive.com/tourdates.html

SUMMERTIME BLUES FOR PETS: DANGERS OF HEATSTROKE With some warmer weather predictions finally on the horizon, leading veterinary charity, PDSA, is urging people to remember the potentially harmful impact that the heat can have on our pets. PDSA’s Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley, said: “Pet owners need to be aware of the harm that hot weather can cause to pets. Pets can’t tell us when they’re too hot in their fur coats, so it’s up to owners to spot the signs and ensure they remain happy and healthy in the heat. “Pets will normally seek shade to keep cool, but if they can’t then this can quickly result in fatal heatstroke. Owners need to make sure they provide enough shade, as well as taking other steps to protect their pets during the warm summer months”. To help owners, PDSA has compiled its top ten tips to make sure your pets don’t suffer in the sunshine. Further advice is also available on the website at www.pdsa.org.uk/summerhealth

• Never leave pets in cars, not even for just a few minutes with windows open. You may be delayed and temperatures can soar dangerously high in minutes, causing potentially fatal heatstroke. • Don’t let pets sit out in strong sun, or leave hutches, runs or cages in direct sunlight. Make sure there is always access to shade. • Make sure pets have access to plenty of clean, fresh water at all times and change water regularly throughout the day. • Know the signs of heatstroke – excessive panting, extreme salivation, distress and collapse. If this happens, gradually cool your pet’s body temperature with cool (not cold) WANTED water, and call your vet for further advice. • If you have a long-haired pet, get their fur trimmed to prevent them from over-heating. • Walk dogs in the morning or evening – not only will this prevent them overheating in the midday sun, but hot road surfaces, pavements and sand can burn paws. • Silver Coins Pre 1947 • All Military Items • If you have a BBQ, make sure any plates and • Badges • Postcards • Bank Notes leftovers are securely disposed of and not left • Most Collectables - Anything of Interest lying around. angler’s corner

PARKLANDS POND

DONCASTER

by Clint Walker

I hope that you may have had chance to read the excellent feature compiled by Gary Newman in last week’s Angler’s Mail about our day on Ladybower? It came out very well with some lovely images and a great write up, so a huge thank you to the team at Ladybower for making it all happen! Sometimes, when I sit down at my laptop to write this column, I have a complete blank and can think of little to write which may be relevant, topical or even mildly interesting; today is one of those days.... so I put an SOS on to a Facebook page I administer to get some help from real anglers about what to write.... The response was fantastic, and within a couple of hours, I reckon I had more than enough points to write something for every day of the next month! What did our anglers want to know about? Well, if I’m honest, there was the odd daft suggestion, but on the whole, those who ventured an idea came up with some really appropriate things to consider; how about cormorant control? It appears the Angling Trust are lobbying for more power to be given to fishery owners to shoot cormorants which plunder stocks with impunity; a fine idea if you ask me, many prime stretches of river and some outstanding fisheries have been decimated by the ‘Black Death’ and they need to be controlled! Litter; another subject during which discussion often becomes animated; is a real problem on our waterways and should be addressed....not by the authorities, but by anglers themselves. It is easy to say that isn’t the responsibility of anglers, but countless sweetcorn tins, groundbait wrappers and discarded line point the finger squarely at us as a group of people who could do more....you take it, so why not bring it back? All we are really doing is giving ammunition to the ‘anti-brigade’. Another popular subject is the weather, its effects on fish behaviour, spawning and catch rates as it is so changeable at the moment. This obviously then leads on to comment about the close season which although clearly defined for anglers, isn’t so apparent to the fish! It’s a subject I touched briefly on a few weeks ago, and a debate that will rumble for a good while yet; if it is abolished, then the ‘other’ side in favour of maintaining it will be able to raise their argument for, despite counter spite from those in favour of dropping it....it will rumble on..... Many other anglers would like a ‘how to’ column in which I tell you my methods to catch big fish; the problem with that is that I’m certainly no expert, and your methods may well be different to mine. Who am I to tell you how to enjoy your chosen hobby? Nah, I don’t think so..... I’ve only touched on the myriad of subjects close to the anglers heart and the great thing is that we are all right in our opinions when it comes to our own angling (unless you happen to be a member of the dreaded ‘carp police’) and that writing about angling brings up something different every time!

After the highs and lows of Royal Ascot this weekend’s fare is at a lower level but nonetheless is extremely competitive, as usual for a Saturday. The action on terrestrial TV comes from Newmarket and Newcastle with some very interesting but difficult races topped off by the Northunberland Plate at Newcastle. In Ireland on Saturday the Irish Derby is run at the rather strange time of 7.40 in the evening at the end of eight races from the Curragh. On Sunday the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes is run at 4.20. Newmarket: Cup, 1m 2f: 2.00 £150,000 Tattersalls Millions 3yo Cup Saint Hilary may be able to come out on top of a very tricky event where there are plenty of horses with good chances. If the selection fails to turn up here then Archbishop is the reserve choice followed by Coup de Ville. 2.30 ACD Projects Supporting the Animal Health Trust Empress Stakes, Listed, 2yo Filies, 6f: Richard Hannon has a strong hand here and, if she puts in an appearance, his City Image would rate a pretty confident selection after scooting in at Windsor in a fast time. The doubt appears to be whether she will turn up as Richard Hughes is down to partner Tim Easterby’s Royal Rascal who won recently at York. However, if City Image doesn’t show up then Columella gets the first reserve vote. 3.00 Betfair Supports the Animal health Trust Fred Archer Stakes, Listed, 4yo+, 1m 4f: After running Sea Moon to a head at Goodwood Dandino is certainly on the short list given the exploits of Sea Moon at the Royal meeting last week. Of the others Polygon may run well if the ground remains soft while Ithoughtitwasover also ran well at Royal Ascot. A chance is taken with Ithoughtitwasover but neither of the other two would be surprise winners. 3.35 John Sunley Memorial Criterion Stakes, Group 3, 3yo+, 7f: The unbeaten Harbour Watch is the selection but he is not a certain runner at this stage. If he failed to show then Eton Forever would be the second choice although he also is not certain to line up. Two that do look likely to start are Edinburgh Knight and Firebeam with preference being for the former despite his finishing down the field in the Royal Hunt Cup. Newcastle: 2.15 Betfred Mobile Lotto Chipchase Stakes, Group 3, 3yo+, 6f: A chance is taken on Inxile after his showing behind Mirza in a Listed race at Cork last week. If he doesn’t go then the reserves are (in order of preference): Doncaster Rover; Sunrise Dance; The Reaper; and Maarek. 2.45 Betfred Mobile Sports Handicap, 3yo+, 0-100, 6f: The shortlist is filled by: Mass Rally; Bertiewhittle; Marvellous Value; Italian Tom; and Arganil, although many of the others have been running well also. Mass Rally just gets the nod to land a wide open event. 3.20 John Smith’s Northumberland Plate (Heritage Handicap), 3yo+, 2m 19yds: It takes a decent staying performance to land this prize on such a stiff track. Prominent performances can be expected from many as the race is chock full of staying talent. In analysing the chances I ended up with at least 17 that looked to have a very good shout. I have finally come down in favour of Ile de

Re after his Chester Cup success over Overturn, who didn’t let the form down last week at Ascot despite not being able to win. There is a host of dangerous opponents however, led by: Motivado; Eternal Heart; Kangaroo Court; Crackentorp; Petara Bay; Becausewecan; and High Office. Also capable of bold shows are my top rated ones, Palazzo Bianco and The Betchworth Kid. 3.55 Betfred Bonus King Bingo Handicap, 3yo+, 0-105, 7f: A chance is taken on Spa’s Dancer in another very open event. Although Powerful Presence is seeking a four timer the selection may have most to fear from Memory Cloth, Fulbright, Rakaan, Don’t Call Me and Imperial Djay, all of whom have been running well of late. The Curragh: Saturday: 7.40 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, Group 1, 3yo, Entire Colts and Fillies, 1m 4f: After Most Improved’s exploits last week I am sticking with the form of the French Derby until it is let down and like the chances of Imperial Monarch here. Astrology lands the reserve slot. Sunday: 4.20 Barclay’s Bank Ireland, Pretty Polly Stakes, Group 1, 3yo+, Fillies and Mares, 1m 2f: Sapphire rates a very confident choice to prevail again over Betterbetterbetter and Soon. Selection summary: Saturday: Newmarket: 2.00 Saint Hilary, if absent Archbishop then Coup de Ville 2.30 City Image, if absent Columella 3.00 Ithoughitwasover, if absent Dandino then Polygon 3.35 Harbour Watch, ifabsent, Eton Forever, then Edinburgh Knight and Firebeam Newcastle: 2.15 Inxile, if absent Doncaster Rover etc. 2.45 Mass Rally, if absent Bertiwhittle etc. 3.20 Ile de Re, if absent Motivado etc. 3.55 Spa’s Dancer, if absent Memory Cloth etc. The Curragh: 7.40 Imperial Monarch if absent Astrology Sunday: The Curragh: 4.20 Sapphire, if absent Betterbetterbetter Good Luck! Last week’s results: On Tuesday Frankel duly did the business in the Queen Anne Stakes and looks to have improved again. Later on in the St James’s Palace Stakes Most Improved and Gregorian did their bit to uphold the form of the French Derby which looks as though it could be worth following later this year. In the Jersey Stakes on Wednesday Sentaril (5/1) was just touched off by Ishvana (20/1, and ironically my eventual top rated runner). The others failed to fire although Stevie Thunder did run well to finish seventh in the Royal Hunt Cup at a big price. On the other days quite a few ran prominently but couldn’t go on to win, except for Black Caviar who just scraped home at 1/6 in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. On reflection this just goes to show how competitive this meeting is and how difficult it is to pick winners when they are all trying their best and are all at the top of their game. Overall the 23 resultant selections resulted in a 15.4 point loss to one point level stakes. Royal Ascot: Wednesday: 2.30 Sentaril - 2nd @ 5/1 3.05 Emulous – 7th @ 11/4 3.45 Planteur – 7th @ 10/1 4.25 Stevie Thunder – 7th @ 50/1 5.00 Star Up In the Sky – 17th @ 33/1 5.35 Electrelane – 16th @ 13/2 Thursday: 2.30 Cay Verde – 6th @ 11/4 3.05 Kailani – 7th @ 13/2 3.45 Opinion Poll – 2nd @ 5/1 4.25 Chapter Seven – 20th @ 12/1 5.00 Mukhadram – 4th @ 13/2 5.35 Samba King – 12th @ 20/1 Friday: 2.30 Miss Diva – non runner 3.05 Athens – non runner 3.45 Laugh Out Loud – 6th @ 7/2 4.25 Qaraaba – 4th @ 9/2 5.00 Gassin Golf – non runner 5.35 Imperial Djay – 11th @ 12/1 Saturday: Royal Ascot: 2.30 Hillbilly Boy – 11th @ 16/1 3.05 Aiken - 4th @ 4/1 3.45 Black Caviar –won @ 1/6 4.25 Arctic – non runner 5.00 Cill Rialaig – 5th @ 11/1 5.35 Overturn – 8th @ 3/1 Ayr: 1.55 Bosun Breese – won @ 11/2 2.25 My Girl Anna – 2nd @ 15/2 2.55 Fennell Bay –non runner 3.30 Tmaam – non runner Newmarket: 2.05 Amadeus Wolfe Tone – 2nd @ 4/1 2.40 Flameoftheforest – non runner 3.10 Russian Rave – non runner
