WORLD STAGE CREATES DIVERSITY AT TRAMLINES 2012 M.V. MOBILITY Curated by Papa Al of The JuJu Club, this year’s World Music Stage has an emphasis on diversity, development and access. This year’s line up includes a group of Romanian musicians, playing Southern Indian music designed to strenthen our chakras (Sahaj Group); young Roma dancers from the Czech & Slovakian Republic living in North East Sheffield (Romano Jilo) and Top Cat, a vocalist at the heart of the explosion of the UK urban dance music from the early nineties - all on the same stage. The stage is headlined by Reggae legend Cornell Campbell and reggae/afro-beat band the Soothsayers.
Alan Deadman said; “It would be hard to track down a stage at any festival this that year mixes it up as much as ours. Alongside our ambition to create great public entertainment that is diverse and that stimulates development, we want our stage to be accessible to groups of musicians who are just starting to break into the festival scene. We are very proud to welcome, The Stars Band and The Clubland Detectives, two bands from Sheffield’s ground-breaking Reach 4 The Stars project which brings together music and young adults with learning difficulties.” The World Stage is at The Peace Gardens on Saturday 21 July from
11am until 10pm. The World Stage offers a development opportunity for local bands with global roots who have been recently formed and who have honed their performance at other festivals, fundraisers and live club nights. Neither Soukous Revelation not Truly Apparent existed 12 months ago, but with support and encouragement from local promoters and other musicians, the two bands, the one playing funky African dance music, the other delving deep into classic reggae music will make their mark at Tramlines. Sarah Nulty, Festival Director at Tramlines said: “The World Stage has been a key part of
Tramlines since we started in 2009. Every year the Peace Gardens has the most diverse audience, dancing around and enjoying the eclectic World Music Stage. Yet again, Papa Al has come up with a fantastic line up that we are all really excited about.” Tramlines is a festival unlike any other. Entry is free and it delivers a lineup that would normally cost a packet. Giving festival-goers a chance to see established artists alongside up and coming acts, across four outdoor stages and over 70 venues. This year’s line up includes Roots Manuva, We Are Scientists, Reverend and The Makers, Ms Dynamite, Field Music, Frankie &

Copley’s Column
My main topic of conversation this week has been answering enquiries about how my pal Jimmy Carol is after being the victim of a savage beating by a huge, fit thirty odd years old bully in Benidorm. I am pleased to report that although hurt and clearly shaken up, this fine trouper was back on stage the next night and has now made a full recovery, and is now holidaying in Canada with his girl, Juliet, for the next seventeen days. On his return, he is performing another acting role at the Academy Theatre, Birdwell, Barnsley from the 24th of July to the twenty eighth as Rigsby in Rising Damp. This is a must see event if it is anything like Jimmy’s performance as the lecherous Bob in Rita, Sue and Bob too, which I was pleased to attend on the opening night. I have no hesitation in recommending a visit to this lovely theatre where I am confident that the performance will be as outstanding as the last time I was privileged to see this likeable, hilariously funny Scouser showing another string to his bow. As well as being the region’s top comedian for many years, he is now becoming known as a fine comedy actor. He gave me a rollocking for having the temerity to book a family holiday whilst this show was on, and I must confess that I would really liked to have been there, but not quite enough to fly back for one night. Everyone seems to be talking about a trilogy of books by El James entitled Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. A notice at the book department in Sainsbury’s, Archer Road, explains that demand for these three books is so great that the publishers cannot meet the demand and that they were hopeful of getting more copies next week, which I understand will sell out within an hour. The demand is just as great in America and much of the rest of the English speaking world and so I resolved to find out what all the fuss is about. Apparently, these books are extremely erotic, and very popular

with the female gender, to the point that one young lady explained that after reading the books, men will be totally redundant. Now I am always up for a challenge in that department and any book that can buy a round of drinks is a must for me, and I have accordingly been on line to Amazon and purchased all three books as a present for my girlfriend. I can confidently predict that she will still be my lifelong partner after she has read them. The European football tournament is finally over, and what a delight it has been, as long as you don’t come from England. I had a good bet on Spain to win the final against Italy and my winnings were never in doubt as the Spaniards played brilliantly and hardly gave the Italians a look in. The last time I was in Spain, the whole country was in party mood, having just won the world cup, and here we are two years on, when I am returning to more celebrations. I am happy to announce that I shall be leaving this column for two weeks in the capable hands of my managing editor, Andrew Platts, who I am assured will not be spending the whole time, if indeed any time, in my beloved home town of Dronfield. The changing fortunes of countries that play cricket is amazing. In the not too distant past, Australia ruled the world in the sport as also did the West Indies with England being an also ran, but not anymore. I have just watched England thrash the Aussies and should the series end in a whitewash in favour of England, then we will then be number one in the world in all three facets of the game. On Saturday evening, Caron and I had a trip away from Dronfield to the Butcher’s Arms, Eckington to see my pal Mark Kay singing there. Mark is very easy on the ear, and the pub was very busy. We were delighted to be joined by our very own local hero, Chris Snell and his girlfriend Linda, who wisely opined that an evening out with us was infinitely preferable to being a boozer’s slave in his own pub, the Victoria in Dronfield, where we inevitably finished the night off.

Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS
Did you hear about the man who drowned at work in varnish? A terrible end, but a beautiful finish. I was chatting to a girl in the pub last night and she told me she liked Sex and The City. I said to her, “What a coincidence, so do I. Who would you say is your favourite City player?” I love the look on people’s faces, standing soaked in the rain at the bus stop as I drive past. It’s partly why I became a bus driver. I took my son to the circus yesterday. At the half time interval, I got talking to the lion trainer. I said, “What do you give them for dinner?” He said, “30 minutes, the same as every body else.” I was sat watching the TV with my mate the other day when my wife came in and interrupted me with some stupid and random questions. “How many years have we been married?” she asked. “Errrrr, 15 love.” I replied. “Oh god, do you think I’m getting old? How old do I look?” she asked. “Errrrr, 30 love.” I replied “N’awww good answer, do you actually know how old I am though?!” she asked. “Errrrr, 40 love.” I replied. “Bloody hell, you’re impressing me today!” she replied. “Game, set and match. Sorry darling, was just watching the tennis, what was you saying?”

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis
Divining The Runes There are many forms of divinations, and this week I shall look at one type that is ever popular The Runes. The Runes are mysterious and they originated in Scandinavia as an ancient aphabet, although much later they became known as Elder Futhark. Runes can be made from, plastic, stone and wood. I can just visualize the little old man carving his runes in the Scandinavian woods. They can also be used as good luck talismans. According to legend, Odin, the God of Magic and the Underworld impaled himself with a spear and hung by the feet from a branch of The Yaddrasil (The Tree of The World) for nine days and nights. His search for enlightenment was rewarded when he discovered some runes lying below on the ground. Over time the runes had a carving and a meaning put on them using a small piece of wood. They were used for divination, and according to folklore the procedure was carried out by the local priest or the male head of the family. The Elder Futhark The original Germanic alphabet from which the runes are derived should not be confused with the runes which are used nowadays for divination. There are twentyfour runes and these are known as Elder Futhark. They are divided into three categories of eight runes - each group is known as an aett, each group of which has a particular significance. The first aett is ruled by Freya the Goddess of Creation and describes the basic areas of life. The second aett is known as Haegl`s aett and is concerned with situations beyond our control. The final aett is called Tyr, the God of Justice War and Transformation . Interpretation Of The Runes Runes don’t tell the future in clear cut terms in the way that, for example, the Tarot Cards can. Instead they describe situations in broader terms and need careful analysis. This is why I have never tried to use runes, because most clients want a clear cut reading. Casting The Runes The client chooses the runes to be cast. A simple one rune can be used for a yes or no answer. To give the
client a clearer picture more runes should be used. The runes are divided into three spreads using the aett formula. Unlike the Tarot or Angel cards runes do not give a striking picture. However they do offer fabulous Scandinavian names. I have chosen three runes and their meanings for this week’s article, and I shall discuss others next week. Fehu The casting of this rune implies that someone is not concentrating hard enough on an important issue - for exams or an interview for example Raide Suggests a journey of some kind whether psychic, mental, environmental, or spiritual. It may also indicate a need to move forward in life. Eihwaz Indicates the importance of being strong in the face of difficulties and challenges. Eihwaz is linked with inheritance If a client were to cast these three runes, therefore, a posible interpretation could be; the likelihood of an interview for a new job, one which may involve travel. It may be that this would be a good job to take as there is a need to move on in life after a major event, perhaps a bereavement. Next week I shall discuss the remaining runes, so make sure you get your Mercury Newspaper before they are all gone. Barbara also studied at the world famous Arthur Findlay College at Stansted to enhance her mediumship skills. Barbara is known for her private sittings, both at home and abroad, (Canada, USA and France). Most of Barbara’s sitters come to her by word of mouth, as a satisfied sitter usually tells others of the proof they have received. She believes that onel ink with the Spirit World, is worth more than any amount of psychic links. There is nothing more satisfying to a medium, than proving life after death to someone who is grieving the loss of a loved one. Barbara is both caring and thoughtful in the way she puts across messages from the spirit. Her mediumistic techniques include reading colours, stones, ribbons and Tarot. She has also created her own unique, spiritual version of Graphology (handwriting analysis). Barbara has since taught this method to the Swiss contingent of the International Spiritualist Federation. HEALTHY LIVING PHARMACIES
www.sheffieldlink.org.uk/bumper-june-bulletin Authorised representatives of the LINk (Local Involvement Network) have started doing ‘enter and view’ visits to pharmacies with a difference. Community pharmacies have a huge role to play in supporting the health and wellbeing of the public. This role is being recognised and assisted nationally through the creation of ‘Healthy Living Pharmacies (HLPs) – and Sheffield is at the forefront of this work. Many pharmacies already offer high-quality advice, consistent services and access to highly qualified healthcare professionals. HLPs do this in a more structured way with public health display areas (pictured above) and a Healthy Living Champion to provide advice on issues such as smoking, alcohol, weight management and sexual health. What is special about a Healthy Living Pharmacy? • Consistently delivers a broad range of commissioned services to a high quality, whatever the day of the week or month of the year. Has a team that are proactive in supporting health and wellbeing, with the community’s health at the centre of what it does. • Promotes healthy living and wellbeing as a core activity. • Supports people with long-term conditions. • Is accessible and approachable. • Is valued and trusted. • Maintains premises to a high professional standard with private consultation facilities and IT linked to local practices when available. • Works closely with other healthcare providers, reactively and proactively. • Will be identifiable to the public and other healthcare professionals. Sheffield is one of just 20 pathfinder sites that successfully bid to test out the HLP model. The 10 local pharmacies currently involved were selected to provide a good mix of location and size and include both chains and independents. Since pharmacies complete a self evaluation form to become an HLP, NHS Sheffield and the Local Pharmaceutical Committee invited Sheffield LINk to provide external validation. We are using our ‘enter and view’ power to visit three HLPs in late June and early July. The visits will be used to help refine the process for selection and self evaluation. The pharmacies taking part in this are: Basegreen Pharmacy; Boots Pharmacy on High Street, Co-operative Pharmacy in Grenoside; Gleadless Valley Pharmacy Limited; Lloyds Pharmacy in Stocksbridge; Rowlands Pharmacy in Chapeltown; Vantage Pharmacy at Manor Top; Weldricks Pharmacy in Crookes; Whitworth Chemists in Beighton and the Wicker Pharmacy. HLPs will be quality marked and promoted more widely following this initial review. In the meantime, you can find out more about this at: www.sheffield.nhs.uk/yourhealth/resources/ healthypharmacy.pdf

WEIGELA SPECIES
Delightful shrub As we head into early summer and June look out for this delightful shrub. Weigela never fails to catch the eye of passers-by, one of those shrubs that you can’t help stopping at to wonder what it is. In late spring and early summer Weigela produces a show of exquisite little bell or funnel-shaped flowers, the colour range goes from ruby red through to pink, there are also yellow and white options. The pinks are the real glory with this plant though, from strong to flushed the colours are striking. Sorts of Weigelas If you are interested in buying one of these versatile shrubs, here are some great options to look out for next time you are at your local garden centre. Weigela ‘Eva Rathke’ is a popular favourite with dark green leaves providing a perfect backdrop to lush deep pink flowers and white stamens dotting the centre of the flower. Weigela florida ‘Foliis Purpureis’ is a stylish option with its pink flowers pale on the inside the bell and dark on the outside. Again ‘Foliis Purpureis’ has mid-green leaves provideing the ideal background to show off its flowers to the best. This plant works well in a shrub border with soft white flowers, perhaps cow parsley, planted in front of the Weigela – this would give a wonderful floating contrast to the pink Weigela bells.
Excavation & Demolition
SKIPS FOR HIRE
up to 2.5m tall and are great for a mixed or shrub border. Weigela are wonderful for that forgotten corner that needs a good strong shrub to fill it but provides lots of colour and interest in early summer before the main summer display of flowers around the garden. Plus Weigela is fantastic for informal hedging.
MINI DIGGERS FOR HIRE
If you don’t have time or don’t particularly like uber-tidy trimmed hedges then the more natural informal look that plants such as Weigela bring could suit you. Most Weigela grow from between 1.2 to 2.5 metres wide – ample as part of an informal hedge. Not climbable and difficult to get through they are quite intruder-proof.
If you would like your Garden featuring in The Mercury Homes & Gardens Feature please email a photo with a short description to
Maintenance Weigela are easy to look after – they will do best in any fertile, well-drained soil, they like sun (don’t we all!) or partial shade. To make sure your flowers keep coming back, each year after flowering just cut back to a strong bud on the branches that have flowered. Having a plant like this doesn’t just encourage you into the garden and help you get some of the all important ‘Vitamin G’ (that’s ‘G’ for green!) to boost your sense of well being and reduce stress. It also brings in much needed garden friends such as bees whose soft summer buzz tell you ‘summer’s here – time to relax!’ Who would have thought a shrub in your garden could bring so much to your life!

FOLKS FLOCK TO THE FOREST AT TRAMLINES VOICE OF THE Tramlines Folk Forest is back for Tramlines 2012, and this year it is set to be bigger and better. Last year Endcliffe Park was transformed into an enchanting Folk Forest over Tramlines weekend. Thousands flocked to see a stellar line up of artists, showcasing local, national and international talents. This year it is happening again - visitors will be able to experience the best in folk music in a beautiful glade in the heart of Endcliffe Park, just over a mile from Sheffield City Centre, on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 July. The Folk Forest will host of some of the greatest names of folk music including James Yorkston, The Big Eyes Family Players, Mary Hampton, Katrina Gilmore and Jamie Roberts, and Maybe Myrtle Tyrtle. Gareth Roberts, of Regather CoOperative, who organise the Folk Forest said: “Even though we are only ten minutes away from the city centre the Folk Forest
is a whole world away. We’ve got some excellent folk music, plus high quality food and drink, a craft market and outdoor activities. People can escape the city centre for a relaxed atmosphere in beautiful river and woodland location.” This year the Folk Forest has grown to include a games area, heritage crafts, a forest school and an arts and craft market in partnership with Folksy. Sarah Nulty, Festival Director at Tramlines said: “Everyone loved the Folk Forest last year so we are really pleased that it is making a return in 2012. The team at Regather have put an amazing line up together. “It’s strange to think that the Folk Forest is only a mile or so away from the hustle and bustle of the Main Stage in the city centre, it is definitely worth the short trip out on the Busker’s Bus.” Tramlines is a festival unlike any other. Entry is free and it delivers a line-up that would normally cost a packet. Giving festival-
goers a chance to see established artists alongside up and coming acts, across four outdoor stages and over 70 venues. This year’s line up includes Roots Manuva, We Are Scientists, Reverend and The Makers, Ms Dynamite, Field Music, Frankie & the Heartstrings, Aluna George, Alt J, James Yorkston, 65 Days of Static, Future of the Left, Toddla Sound, Mr Scruff, Eugene McGuinness Rebel MC with Nancy & Phoebe, Roska, Keep Shelly In Athens, Grooverider and much more The festival runs from Friday 20 – Sunday 22 July 2012 and covers all musical genres from indie, electronica and blues to world music, folk and everything in between. Further announcements are still expected over the next two months. For up to the minute information, regular bulletins and news on the Sheffield music scene go to www.tramlines.org. uk or follow us on twitter @ tramlines

NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques
Viking have got another stunner of a prize for our July competition. The new 32 GB iPad from Apple has faster graphics, 4G wireless options, a better camera, and a gorgeous high-res screen. But you’ve got to be in it to win, so read below on how to enter! To enter all you need to do is make a purchase through the easyfundraising site before 31st July. Each time you make a purchase you receive an entry into the draw so, twenty purchases means twenty chances to win! Plus we’ll give you TWO entries when you make any purchase from competition sponsor Viking. And tell your friends about easyfundraising to earn extra entries into the draw too. This months competition sponsors are Viking – suppliers of thousands of business products, from pens and pencils to office furniture and everything in between. Did you know Viking also sell a wide range of products for the home, including games consoles, games and accessories, home entertainment, cameras, DVD box sets and so much more. So easy, so why not?
I’d like to tell you about what’s been a special week for me, as I was invited to take part in an event for a charity close to my heart. Most people will have been affected by cancer in their lives; Andy Lee and Ritchie James both lost their fathers within the last twelve months and they invited me up to the famous Full Monty club – Shiregreen! Great to see the place full on a Tuesday night – we did two 45 minute spots, there were psychics and mediums, and a charity raffle – and of course, it being the home of the Full Monty – you guessed it – that’s how we closed the show! Sincere thanks to everybody – the night itself raised £1330, but with all the other events and fundraising he organised, Andy now has over £4000 to present to charity – WELL DONE! Paul (Rocky Horror)
SMOKING BAN: MAJORITY OF LICENSEES WANT SMOKING LEGISLATION AMENDED FOR PUBS
Five years after the introduction of the smoking ban in England, almost seven out of 10 licensees want the legislation amended to allow for separate smoking rooms in pubs. A survey of the Publican’s Morning Advertiser readership revealed 68.3% either agree or strongly agree that pubs should be permitted to have separate smoking rooms, in line with some European countries . Furthermore, six out of 10 felt there should be designated smoking and non-smoking bars. However, there was less appetite for a full repeal of the ban. Just four in 10 respondents agreed it should be scrapped. GHOSTFEST LEEDS UNIVERSITY 30/6 - 1/7/12
REVIEW
Words by Katy Evans
It seems a somewhat regular occurrence for small time hardcore and metal festivals to appear out of the blue and serve up a decent line-up to a decent sized audience membership. Ghostfest is the complete contrary. Although only catering for a limited capacity of up to two thousand hardcore music attendees, a two day belter of a line-up along with a first rate three staged live venue transformed a typical rockers day out into an unquestionable musical mecca…minus the white robes…but you get our drift. Kicking processions off with their fire ball set of brutal post-hardcore, Silent Screams prowled the Impericon main stage as any fierce caged animal would. A tight energy omitted from the pack, the momentum carried within the mosh pits from kick off indicated a half hour set jammed tight with brutal force. Up on their feet to tackle an already riled main stage audience, Bleed From Within seized Impericon processions upon day one of Ghostfest. High off the announcement of their full UK tour with While She Sleep, Polar and Crossfaith in late 2012, the Glaswegian quartet served up a selection of Scottish delights…it’s a certified fact the crowd are anticipating an enormous gig when a circle pit spits out before any band member graces the floor. Maintaining such high levels of anticipation, the regular littering of break downs and spikey rhythmic sections only aided the groups primary aim to deliver a thirty minute set all can appreciate…and if head banging is a sign of approval, Bleed From Within we salute you. Main headline support for The Black Dahlia Murder on the first stage of the sold-out Saturday line-up, Comeback Kid made like any seasoned professional would to present us with a belting live set. However, although making sure every reviewers box was given an almighty tick, their show seemed to waver at times and at moments patchy. Clearly not a true indication of a group who have walked across international stages of rock, Comeback Kid didn’t so much as let us down, more failed to inject us with their usual high voltage character. Heart in Hand on the flip side personified exactly what Comeback Kid were lacking. Headlining Time Will Tell stage, the smallest capacity room was hit by a screwed up fist of huge force to reflect upon the bands fierce seventy five minute show. Declaring ‘We’re so grateful to be headliners on this stage…it’s a total f***ing honour,’ the hardcore head bangers threw themselves into it to prove all their worth. Headlining Sunday’s Monster stage and in full preparation to close the weekend’s events, Defeater were undeniably one of the more underground headliners however easily put on the performance of the entire weekend. Performing a littering of tracks throughout the groups extensive back catalogue, it’s hard ignore the blinding torment and anger entwined within the group’s whole performance. Closing with ‘Cowardice,’ the grittiest belter Defeater have to offer, the only encore of the weekend was rewarded to the strength and passion of five piece’s closing set. And hell did they deserve it…

Words by Katy Evans
All hail Sheffield’s very own unique slice of unadulterated Northern rock, Reverend and the Makers are back with a brand spanking new album ‘@Reverend_Makers’ along with extensive live UK appearances to match. Having being somewhat off the radar since the release of their second studio album, ‘A French Kiss In The Chaos’ back in 2009, the five piece have smashed their way back into the British music industry with lead single ‘Bassline’ confirmed as one of the groups most anticipated new releases. What a year 2012 has been for Jon Mclure and co. so far…amidst the writing, recording and producing their hugely sought-after third album, the quintet has sampled us with some explosive live show dates and announcements. 25th May played witness to Sheffield’s finest grace the infamous stages of Leadmill to greet their hometown masses, a more than easy highlight of the bands seven year chart topping career so far. Performing a concoction of tracks throughout their entire back catalogue, their set was a salute to fans both old and new who came out to support such a hugely influential force within the steel city. Up on their feet for round two of UK live platforms, the band are fresh off the stages of Knebworth, being one of a hand-picked support for international legends Red Hot Chilli Peppers in late June. Sharing the bill with Dizzee Rascal, The Future Heads and The Wombats, Reverend And The Makers are unquestionably back on their adrenaline fuelled pinnacle form. Having already announced a full UK October tour to include blasting through Newcastle, Manchester, Liverpool and London, the group are certainly not going to be twiddling their thumbs this summer. Set as a major headliner on the Nokia Stage 1 on Friday 20th July for Sheffield’s free weekend festival Tramlines, Reverend And The Makers have also been added to the Y Not? Festival bill. Held on 3rd – 5thAugust in Pikehall Derbyshire, the band will no doubt bring to life their originally unique take on alternative ‘Brit-pop’-esque’ rock….and hell we simply cannot wait! Entitled @Reverend_Makers “nothing representing the modern times more than the ‘@’ symbol” according to Mclure, the bands sterling new third studio album is the certified soundtrack to this summer. Having already set free a string of singles as an early album sampler, the band have successfully geared up their sound with punchy electronic elements, fiery rhythmic sections and their trademark Mclure chorus lines. Having been released on 18th June, it has already received huge critical acclaim, with The Independent granting it a massive 4/5 rating. It’s therefore finally safe to safe…welcome back!

round-up
by stuart renton You wouldn’t write and complain to the President of France if you got bitten by a rabid dog (no, I’m not talking about Kerry Katona), because we all know that biting people is exactly what mad mutts do. And applying that logic to the real world, why is there all this outrage over Conor’s comments on last week’s Big Brother? Over one thousand people apparently felt the need to complain, demanding the cancellation of the show because of a few strong comments one housemate made to another. At its heart, Big Brother is a TV show designed to show people at their worst, but even knowing that, there are countless dumbwits out there who feel the need to overreact. So, here’s a newsflash: it’s just a television show! Big brother used to be a social experiment in human interaction, but that went down the toilet when the producers started filling the house with the lowest possible common denominator. These are the worst kind of people: the most narcissistic, outspoken, prejudiced and exceptionally stupid, and it’s all made worse with their hunger for fame. These people are quite literally prepared humiliate themselves on public television in search of celebrity status. They’re the kind of people who will ‘accidentally’ whip their jugs out on national television while tittering: ‘ooh one of my baps just popped out, I’m soooo clumsy’. For more information, you can also check out the brides who complain their wedding day has been “ruined” on any number of ‘my brain dead fiancé designed my wedding’ shows. Sorry, love, but I’m sorry to say your fiancé isn’t the only thing that’s brain dead around here… The contestants on Big Brother are utterly lacking in humility or compassion or consideration, and yet, even knowing what kind of people they’re watching, the public is still outraged when they say something even remotely offensive. But these are the rabid dogs and no one should be surprised when they “bite”. The housemates are behaving entirely as expected, yet time and time again the public is baying for their eviction, when we should be asking for more intelligent and interesting housemates, someone with something to say (rather than someone who thinks revealing all the girls they’ve shagged constitutes a deep and meaningful conversation). I’m not saying we should forgive these people for their outrageous statements, just that we should acknowledge these people exist, that they’re young and the crème-dela-crème of the supremely stupid, and as such, anything they do on screen is bound to be contentious and ultimately, unworthy of us raising more than an eyebrow. Oh they’re swearing and saying racist / sexist other ‘ist’ crap, but that’s fine. We tell ourselves and our children that that kind of language is not acceptable and we move on. Writing in to complain is a complete waste of everyone’s time. The producers are still going to drag these utter morons into the Big Brother house with every new series as they appeal to the Hollyoaks watching crowd who can relate to barely twenty-somethings who have less life experience than the average fruit fly (about a couple of weeks). Basically, don’t take the words of anyone who thinks shouting is a valid form of communication too seriously.

Dogs and cats may hold pride of place as the UK’s most popular pets, but with nearly two million rabbits, together with large numbers of guinea pigs, mice, rats and gerbils kept as pets, it’s clear that these smaller animals will always hold a place in our hearts. However, whilst owners clearly love their pets, some may not be having all their needs met. For instance, over one million rabbits are kept alone, but as a highly social animal they need the company of another rabbit to prevent loneliness and boredom. PDSA Senior Vet, Sean Wensley, says: “Small pets are more intelligent than people often realise, and appropriate mental stimulation is vital for their wellbeing. The Animal Welfare Act 2006 outlines the five needs that all owners must meet for their pets in order to keep them healthy and happy. These are: a suitable environment, a suitable diet, the right companionship, opportunities to express normal behaviour and to be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease.” Whilst meeting small pets’ basic needs, such as housing, food and water, may be relatively simple, meeting their behavioural needs takes some imagination - and can be lots of fun! To help owners, Sean has prepared some tips on how to keep small pets happy:

1. Appropriate companionship. For social animals, having suitable company is incredibly important – rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, rats, mice and dwarf hamsters all need friends of their own species, whereas golden hamsters prefer to live alone. If you own one of these pets and they currently live alone, think about introducing a suitable companion and get advice from your vet practice or a reputable animal charity on how to do this safely. 2. Suitable toys. Giving your pet suitable toys to play with will help to keep them occupied, and rotating these toys each week will prevent pets becoming bored of them. Make one or two toys available at a time, and use this opportunity to clean the other toys. Cardboard tubes, boxes and egg boxes (regularly changed) make great free places to hide and explore, while ladders, solid wheels (ones with no gaps between the rungs) and seesaws for smaller rodents can be bought in pet shops. 3. Digging. Many small pets have a natural inclination to dig, and providing opportunities to do this will keep them occupied and active. For rabbits, a planter, deep-sided cat litter tray or a child’s sand pit filled with potting compost are all ideal, whilst hamsters should be given an area with a deep layer of wood shavings. Gerbils are best kept in a large ‘gerbilarium’ – usually a large tank filled with compost with a caged area above - as this gives them plenty of opportunities to dig tunnels. 4.Gnawing. Rodents’ teeth grow constantly, so they need to gnaw regularly to wear their teeth down. Hamsters, mice, rats and gerbils need things they can gnaw on, such as untreated apple branches or a gnawing block, whilst rabbits and guinea pigs need constant access to clean, fresh hay or grass as their main food – rabbits should eat about their own body size every day! Without this, their teeth can become overgrown, causing painful dental disease. 5. Hiding food. Hiding small pieces of their daily food allowance around the cage or in tubes is a great way to encourage interest and activity. You could wrap some food in brown paper as a ‘food parcel’ for them to open, and stuff some of their daily hay in to cardboard tubes. Avoid regularly giving sugary and fatty treats such as fruit, carrots and sunflower seeds, as too much of these foods can lead to obesity. For more information about meeting the five welfare needs for small pets, visit www.pdsa. org.uk/pethealth.

angler’s corner
PARKLANDS POND
DONCASTER
by Clint Walker
No fishing for me this week, too busy painting the kitchen for she who must be obeyed (especially if I want to go to Pendle View for 24 hours next week!) and dealing with a multitude of emails, features, photographs and other work, but I have achieved something constructive today...... After a recent exchange of correspondence regarding potential co-operation between the Angling Trust and a second party, I’ve decided to sign up to the one body that truly represents the interest of anglers of all disciplines across the UK and beyond. Admittedly, it’s cost me £25 as an adult member, but when you contrast that with the potential for real action to safeguard our sport, environment and develop of angling, then it’s a very small price to pay and I already feel that it’s money well spent. But what does the Angling Trust actually do? To be fair, much of their work is behind the scenes in addition to the daily ‘in your face’ tasks that fall to the AT, but most details can be lumped into four sections. Fighting for Anglers includes action to repress illegal fishing, both by those who seek to take fish to eat and those who illegally fish in contravention of byelaws, fighting for continued rights to access and fish waterways, arguing for other users to pay proper tariffs and stop the inequality of anglers having to pay when others do not and lobbying of the EA to provide item specific reports into exactly where YOUR licence fee goes.... Managing our Fisheries; DEFRA needs to issue more licences and include more predators so that owners can proper disperse or destroy predators which affect fish stocks and the AT provides an effective medium for raising awareness and maintaining pressure on the appropriate bodies to enable this to happen. Managing invasive plant species, non-indigenous introductions and removing them completely to restore waterways all come under the remit of the AT, as does campaigning for funding to continue the battle to make the Government sit and take notice! Environmental campaigning; in reality, this speaks for itself, but the AT are able to apply concerted pressure to water companies and related parties to improve water quality, reduce water wastage and use legal challenge to restrict damage and diversion of water courses. Promote and develop; this raises the positive profile of angling through media directives and campaigns to introduce new anglers to our sport in a huge number of ways. The AT organise events, matches and show stands to interact with anglers at the base level, really getting amongst anglers to find out what is important and listen to their views to make change, enhance our environment and progress relationships with groups who may not agree with fishing (or anglers!) in the correct way to prove that angling does benefit the economy, the surroundings and the people who enjoy it! The Angling Trust are also hugely involved in personal development of individuals who seek to gain recognised qualifications to further the sport by obtaining coaching skills and can offer assistance both financially and educationally. I’ve only touched briefly on the full portfolio of the Angling Trust; there is so much more to discover, so why not take a look at www.anglingtrust.net to find out more? The membership page is there too.........

There is another cracking weekend’s action forthcoming on Channel 4 this Saturday when they will be showing seven good races. The two feature races are the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks at Haydock and the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse from Sandown, but there are some quite attractive supporting events also. Sandown: 2.05 Coral Charge (Registered as The Sprint Stakes), Group 3, 3yo+, 5f 6yds: Stakes) This is a wide open event concerning a number of in-form horses that seem to be at the top of their game at present. My short list comprises: Angels Will Fall; Caledonia Lady; Inxile; Judge’n’Jury; Night Carnation; Spirit Quartz; and Stepper Point. Angels Will Fall beat My Girl Anna last time which seems to give her the edge over a couple of contestants here (Inxile and Duchess Dora finishing behind My Girl Anna in Ireland when she was second to Mirza). She looks like being hard to beat but one that is right at the top of his game just now and who possibly could do so is Judge’n’Jury. To my mind this previous course and distance winner has a clear edge over Angels Will Fall and Inxile through Mirza, whom he beat by over four lengths at level weights when second to Definightly last weekend. He has won twice already this year and seems to be better than ever at the age of eight. Of the others the main danger could come in the shape of Stepper Point whom seems to be coming to a peak and Night Carnation who also has a course and distance win in her CV. 2.40 Coral Challenge (Handicap), Class 2, 3yo+, 1m 14yds: Godolphin’s Con Artist, who was beaten eight and a half lengths by Gatewood in the Listed Wolferton Handicap at the Royal meeting, earns a narrow vote for this contest. That race was run in a very fast time for the conditions and the form may turn out to be strong. Others that are running well at present are: Trade Commissioner; Classic Colori: old favourite Kyllachy Star; Invisible Man; Stage Attraction; Cai Shen; Directorship; Field of Dream; Sam Sharp; Ibtahaj; and Don’t Call Me. In the event that Con Artist doesn’t run Kyllachy Star gets the reserve slot ahead of Trade Commissioner and Classic Colori. 3.10 Coral Distaff, Listed, 3yo Fillies, 1m 14yds: Starscope’s second to Fallen For You in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at the Royal meeting looks to be a strong enough piece of form to ensure that she has a very good chance of lifting this lesser contest. In that race John Gosden saddled first and second and should know the value of the form. Finishing third that day, and looking to be the main danger to the selection here, was Godophin’s Irish History. She may have to settle for second here. Of the others Roger Sez, Falls of Lora and Arsaadi are all running well enough at present but may just lack the class to trouble the selection. 3.45 Coral-Eclipse, Group 1, 3yo+, 1m 2f 7yds: This may concern only three or four come the day. So You Think was a three length conqueror of Reliable Man at level weights in the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at the Royal meeting. Therefore, on a line through Reliable Man, So You Think would appear to have the measure of Crackerjack King, who finished well behind Reliable Man in the French Derby last year. However, Crackerjack King has

been beaten only once in his career of eight outings and won an Italian Group 1 race last time out. He may have improved this year. It will be interesting to see them clash. Third in the Ascot race was Farhh who re-opposes So You Think here. Lightly raced, he has to improve by almost three lengths to get past So You Think but may have the scope to do so. The other one that interests me is John Gosden’s Nathaniel who hasn’t been out this year but has excellent form in the book (he beat Workforce is last year’s King George) and, with the stable firing in the winners, comes here with every chance. In a fascinating contest where So You Think is too short Crackerjack King is the value choice followed by Nathaniel. Giofra is another with a decent outsider’s chance. Haydock: 2.20 Bet365 Handicap, Class 2, 3yo, 0-100, 1m 3f 200yds: Yazdi, who will have the assistance of Kieren Fallon from the saddle here, didn’t get home in the two mile Group 3 Queen’s Vase at the Royal meeting but, having led briefly three out, dropping back in trip here may suit. In a tight contest the hat–trick seeking Rule Book, the once-raced Proofreader and the unbeaten pair Valiant and Anjaz may be the ones to give him most to do, although there are plenty of others with decent chances, notably: Handsome Man; Ruacana; Pilgrim’s Rest; Naseem Alyasmeen; Position; and Willie Wag Tail. 2.55 Bet365 Lancashire Oaks, Group 2, Fillies and Mares, 3yo+, 1m 3f 200yds: Coming from the all-conquering Gosden stable Great Heavens is much respected. However, I slightly prefer the chances of the older brigade in this contest where the three that interest me most are: Set To Music; Aquamarine; and Testosterone. Amongst the three year olds, the best chances may be held by Great Heavens and Salford Art with a slight preference for the latter. In what should be an intriguing clash of the generations Set To Music earns a narrow vote. 3.25 Bet365 Old Newton Cup, (Heritage Handicap), Class 2, 4yo+, 1m 3f 200yds: After his showing last time out in the Cumberland Plate at Carlisle Donald McCain’s Lexi’s Boy gets a confident vote to follow up, even though this is one of the most competitive events about. The principal dangers to my mind would appear to be: Quiz Mistress; Number Theory; Hillview Boy; Askaud; Mulaqen; Allied Powers; Ithoughitwasover; Kiama Bay; Easy Terms; and Scrapper Smith. If the selection doesn’t run the reserve slot goes to Number Theory, followed by Quiz Mistress, Hillview Boy and Allied Powers. This latter-named could be very interesting at a price, given his last run behind Sea Moon in the Hardwicke and that his trainer is putting up a 7lb claimer which should not harm his chances. Selection summary: Sandown: 2.05 Judge’n’Jury, if absent Angels Will Fall, Stepper Point, Night Carnation 2.40 Con Artist, if absent Kyllachy Star, Trade Commissioner, Classic Colori 3.10 Starscope, if absent Irish History then Roger Sez, Arsaadi, Falls of Lora 3.45 Crackerjack King, if absent Nathaniel, Farhh, Giofra Haydock: 2.20 Yazdi, if absent Proofreader, Valiant, Rule Book, Anjaz 2.55 Set To Music, if absent Testosterone, Aquamarine, Salford Art, Great Heavens 3.25 Lexi’s Boy, if absent Number Theory, Quiz Mistress, Hillview Boy, Allied Powers. Good Luck! Last week’s results: If only! - I just missed out in tipping a 33/1 shot last week when preferring Dandino (2nd. @ 4/7) to Polygon (1st. @ 33/1) as reserves should Ithoughtitwasover not run. Knowing the respective prices now I am kicking myself as the whole basis of this column is to try to find good value winners, which quite patently Polygon was and Dandino would never have been. Nevertheless from the nine resultant selections that ran there were three winners providing a ten point return to one point level stakes for a one point profit. Newmarket: 2.00 Saint Hilary, Archbishop, Coup de Ville –all non runners 2.30 City Image – won @ 3/1 3.00 Reserve - Dandino – 2nd @ 4/7 3.35 Reserve - Edinburgh Knight - 2nd @ 4/1 Newcastle: 2.15 Reserve - Doncaster Rover – 7th @ 8/1 2.45 Mass Rally - 5th @ 16/1 3.20 Ile de Re – won @ 5/2 3.55 Reserve - Memory Cloth –won @ 6/4 The Curragh: 7.40 Reserve - Astrology – 5th @ 14/1 Sunday: The Curragh: 4.20 Sapphire – 2nd @ 2/1

BEEVERS SIGNS FRIDAY FIXTURE TWO YEAR DEAL FOR BLADES OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Sheffield Wednesday defender Mark Beevers has signed a two-year contract extension. The 22-year-old will remain at Hillsborough until the summer of 2014. Beevers rose through the S6 ranks from academy level to the first team and has made 162 senior appearances for the Owls. The centre half also enjoyed a productive loan spell with MK Dons last season, making 14 starts for the Buckinghamshire side in their drive for the play-offs. He returned to Hillsborough to play a key role as the Owls secured automatic promotion on the final day of the season.” Beevers told swfc.co.uk: “This was something I always wanted to do and I’m really pleased to be staying for another two years. “Sheffield Wednesday is my club and I will be here as long as they want me. “I’ve been through the highs and lows with Wednesday and winning promotion last season was the biggest high of all. “We are all aiming now to do well in the Championship and we’re excited about the challenge ahead.”
BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Two of United’s npower League One encounters have been brought forward in order to avoid fixture clashes. The home match with Coventry City and the away game at Tranmere Rovers - both in the second half of the campaign - will now be played on Friday evenings, instead of Saturday afternoons. The fixture against Coventry, originally scheduled for Saturday 2 February 2013, will now be played on Friday 1 February 2013, kick-off 7.45pm at Bramall Lane. This is due to a potential fixture clash with Sheffield Wednesday. Meanwhile, the trip to Tranmere’s Prenton Park, penciled in for Saturday 30 March 2013, will now take place on Good Friday 29 March 2013, kick-off 3pm, subject to Football League confirmation. This is due to a would-be fixture clash with Everton.

MILLERS NEWS www.themillers.co.uk
Rotherham United’s first team squad reported back today for the first day of pre-season training. The Millers squad, including nine summer recruits, were put through their paces at the club training ground at Parkgate, overseen by manager Steve Evans and assistant Paul Raynor. “We have done some good work with the guys today, and it was nice to get all the new lads in and integrate them into the squad,” Raynor told www. themillers.co.uk “We haven’t done anything too strenuous today, we have gently eased the lads back into things but it was enjoyable and nice to get back to work.” It is an early start for the Millers squad but Raynor believes that with nine new arrivals it is important to give them time to gel together. “We have come back a little earlier than a lot of teams, purposely to allow them to integrate,” added Raynor. “We have nine new players, obviously we are looking to add to that, and it is important that we can garner a good team spirit and camaraderie, that will only come together by being together and that is what we are trying to do this week. “At the moment we are gauging fitness levels and then we can increase or decrease things accordingly. They have come back in good physical shape which was good to see, everybody has worked towards their programme so we have been pleased with the first day.”
McCORMICK MAKES IT SIX ROVERS NEWS www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk
Rovers can today confirm that Jake McCormick has put pen to paper on a one year professional contract with the football club. McCormick is the sixth and final youth team player to sign having being offered professional forms by manager Dean Saunders and the midfielder spoke to Rovers Player about how it felt. “It feels brilliant, it’s obviously something that I’ve been working towards ever since I started playing football so I’m made up with it,” he said. “I’ve had two years here and a few years with various other clubs so all the hard work has paid off. All the other lads are made up for me for getting my contract and I’m made up for them as well.” McCormick follows in the footsteps of highly rated quintet James Husband, Jonathan Maxted, Liam Wakefield, Paddy Mullen and Jordan Ball in making the progression from the successful Youth Team of last season and he heaped praise on his mentors Paul Wilson and Paul Stancliffe.
