BOBSLEIGH QUEEN SET FOR CITY SPORT HONOUR Sports centre bosses in Sheffield this week paid tribute to the city’s newest World Champion. Shelley Rudman, who trains at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield (EIS Sheffield) and iceSheffield, has become the first British female to win world skeleton gold in St Mortiz, Switzerland. Sheffield International Venues (SIV), which operates both EIS Sheffield and iceSheffield, is planning to honour the historic achievement by inducting the 31-

year-old into its Hall of Champions, which also features athletes including Jess Ennis and Kelly Holmes. The 2006 Olympic silver medallist practices starts at iceSheffield with Kristan Bromley, who won gold at the 2008 World Championships. She also completes strength and conditioning work at EIS Sheffield, which is home to SIV’s Hall of Champions. Lorenzo Clark, operations director, SIV, said: “What Shelley has achieved is incredible so it is fitting that she

should be honoured in our Hall of Champions. “It was created to celebrate the athletes who have trained with SIV on their way to World or Olympic success and Shelley fully deserves her place with this historic win. “Shelley uses EIS Sheffield for her fitness work and, at iceSheffield, we carve a groove into the ice so she can practice starts. We look forward to welcoming her back to Sheffield to mark her success.” EIS Sheffield has world-class sports facilities for

SHEFFIELD DOC/FEST LOOKS FOR A YOUTH JURY The Sheffield Doc/Fest Youth Jury, now in its seventh year, offers an exceptional opportunity for any young person interested in watching, making or critiquing documentary film, to get first-hand festival experience and hear from industry experts about the world of documentary filmmaking. For some previous Youth Jurors, taking part at Doc/Fest has been an accelerator into the industry. The Youth Jury will form a judging panel of five who will award one festival film the Sheffield Youth Jury Award at Sheffield Doc/Fest in June, 2013. Prior to the Festival, the Youth Jurors will also participate in an invaluable Hothouse project in March. This will include viewing short-listed films, speaking to industry experts - BAFTAwinner Morgan Matthews (The Fallen, Scenes from a Teenage Killing, Britain in a Day) already confirmed - and learning more about what makes a good documentary. Past speakers have included directors, commissioning editors, and worldfamous documentary-makers including Michael Palin. Isla Badenoch, a Youth Juror in 2012 says:

“Being on last year’s Sheffield Doc/Fest Youth Jury was pretty life changing - and that is no overstatement! It was a whirlwind of incredible films and people whose passion could not help but rub off on you, and whose enthusiasm furthered my motivation to be in the filmmaking industry.” Heather Croall, Director of Sheffield Doc/ Fest, says: "We're incredibly proud of our Youth Jury - the experience gives a fast track to understanding how the industry works and for some it has facilitated their break into film and TV, where they are still working today." SHEFFIELD ROLLER DERBY ON TRACK FOR OXFAM Sheffield Steel Rollergirls are getting together with Oxfam for other women around the world. Sheffield roller derby ‘jammer’ Amy Roberts, is calling for people in Sheffield to support them for an exciting roller derby event for Oxfam Get Together, a campaign that raises funds for Oxfam’s work with women in poverty. Supporters are invited to hold fundraisers for Oxfam during the week of International Women’s Day (8th March). 30-year-old Amy, who lives in Highfield and has played roller derby for 2 years, said: “Roller derby is a huge part of our lives, it’s a great way for lots of different women to come together to work out and link with a wider community. It’s strong, athletic and the only contact sport played by predominantly by women. It is women who have revived and developed the sport, and now it is the world’s fastest growing sport, and could even become an Olympic sport in 2020!” The sport involves two teams on an oval track, each with a "jammer" who scores points by passing members of the opposing team, with a lot of bumps and bruises along the way as the other players use their bodies to stop her in order to prevent her from

scoring. The Sheffield Steel Rollergirls will be raising funds for Oxfam Get Together on 9th February during one of their intraleagues. The match will take place at Skate Central on Queens Road from 7pm onwards. Amy, adds: “The majority of people living in poverty are women. Get Together raises money for Oxfam’s work, helping women reclaim their rights and make their voices heard. We want everyone in Sheffield to attend our match and help us raise as much as possible for other women around the world”. Harriet Roberts, Oxfam community fundraiser in the North West, says: “An Oxfam Get Together can be absolutely anything; from cocktails or a movie night at home, to a killer quiz with colleagues or even a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. We want to encourage as many as possible to take inspiration and organise their own glamorous Get Together”. Rugby fans can now make their final vote for their favourite street names for the two new streets in a competition run by Chesterfield Borough Council in association with Chesterfield Panthers Rugby Union Football Club. The two streets are part of a new development on the club’s former Sheffield Road Site, Stonegravels. Chesterfield Borough Council ran the first part of the ‘Name a Rugby Road’ competition in November 2012 for residents to suggest names for the streets. These have been shortlisted to the six below: Lord Avenue after the Lord family’s long association with the rugby club stretching back more than 30 years Gilthorpe Way after Clarence Gilthorpe, who began his rugby career in Chesterfield before playing for London Wasps and England in the 1930s and 1940s Obolensky Way after Prince Alexander Obolensky, who played for Chesterfield between 1929 and 1933 before playing for England, scoring the iconic ‘wonder try’ in 1936 Rugby Drive after the game, first played at Rugby School

ICE CREAM ALL ROUND CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

This week, we are popping over to Sunderland where there was once a thriving club, the Democratic Workmen’s Club. Kevin Wardle of Sunderland got in touch with Club Historians to share some of his fond memories of the club. Its grand title reflects some of the high political ideals many of the older clubs held. He wrote how as a young lad in the sixties, when he was around ten, he was often with his dad in this small club. Two main groups used the ‘Demmy’, shipyard workers and coal miners, almost with an equal split. It was a profitable and well-run club ‘with a superb ethos for its members’, says Kevin. The committee provided everything from Christmas parties, Easter parades, gentlemen’s “smokers” (no strippers though Kevin tells us!) just free beer, a pre-packed meal and cigarettes on the tables. One particularly funny story stuck in his memory. This was regarding some lapse in committee men’s skills of calculation, which took place during one annual club trip to Crimdon Dene, a seaside resort in North Yorkshire. ‘The club would hire four or five council double decker buses, laden with kids, mams and dads each under the supervision of a committee man dressed in his best suit and waistcoat.’ Some of the committee men decided that to keep the kids happy they would treat them to ice cream from the local ice cream man. He offered a bulk purchase in large aluminium tubs but they were not sure how many to buy. Kevin relates how the conversation went: “Do you think one will be enough or shall we get two?” “Better get two.” They only later discovered that one tub supplied about 1000 cornets! Of course this meant they were left with gallons of ice cream. Not wanting to waste it, on the following Saturday night, anyone going into the club was presented with a cornet or wafer sandwich. There was still plenty to spare so the remainder was carried next door to the Conservative Club, who, says Kevin, ‘were suitably chuffed to be able to offer their members said ice cream!’ It was largely the demise of the shipyards and pits that eventually saw off ‘the Demmy’ but happy memories remain of how this CIU club once affected local people’s lives.

The Mercury Events are getting more and more popular each week. Tickets are flying out at the moment, we are almost full for the NOSTALGIC 50’S afternoon at the Embassy on the 7th February! We are just waiting for confirmation on a second date, as a result of the first being so popular. Watch this space for further details to come. There are a few tickets left so don’t delay, book today for an afternoon of fun. See the main advert for more details. SUE CUNNINGHAM will be appearing at the Ridgeway Arms on Tuesday 12th February. We have already sold several tickets, but you can pay on the door for this event. Sue, an international medium and author is new to The Mercury, so come along and support her. Why does everybody hate Monday? Productivity in workers is under 30%, on average people moan for ten minutes as soon as they wake up, almost 50% of employees are late for work on this very day. We’ll tell you why we don’t hate Monday…Soyo Live duh! Easily one of the highlights of the week, Soyo Live is a weekly live music event, hosting a range of talents from Yorkshire and beyond. This week’s turn? Alvarez Kings. This show was rescheduled from back when we were hit with heap loads of snow, however rest assured this gig wasn’t put on the back burner. A packed out Soyo saw a bolting atmosphere which is seen less and less at small time indie gigs these days, allowing for the mixed bag of attendees to polish up their dance moves and throw some serious shapes. We’re pretty sure someone whipped out the robot within the six foot radius Soyo like to call their dance floor…O’h you hipsters you. The main headliners with support from Ada Kay, 10Take and the Ratells, Alvarez Kings did what they came to do and put on an almighty show to well and truly kick the Monday blues. Alvarez Kings never change. They will forever remind us of sunny tramlines days, caring only about which band we’re hoping to catch next. They’re summery vibe and light hearted melodies are weaved throughout each of their tracks, allowing for a repertoire more than easy to listen to. Hell they could be a tad more versatile but with a support as strong as theirs as well as various live festival experiences, we don’t blame them for sticking to their guns and serving us a set full of traditional ‘King’ anthems. Easily the highlight of the set, their new single “Walking In The Air” is as bizarre as it is brilliant…who ever thought of the idea to record such a prolific single deserves a huge high five, especially when the band somehow pull it off effortlessly. This is precisely the direction Alvarez Kings need to be heading…we all know they’re the masters of creating Sheffield’s finest indie pop tracks, however they not only have the ability but the determination within their own talents to pull off a hell of a lot more. Our ultimate favourite event of the entire year, Leeds Festival 2013 has announced its first wave of headliners and main acts to get us all god damn excited for August Bank Holiday. Held within the huge surrounding of Bramham Park, this time round promises to be bigger and better than ever before…but hey we say that ever year! One of the most successful alt-rock bands of all time, System Of A Down make a welcome return to Leeds, The band have only played a handful of gigs since they reformed in 2010, but they are back with a revenge to seize festival proceedings on this year’s main stage. Expect mosh pitting…lots of mosh pitting. Also announced within the festivals bill, the recently reformed Fall Out Boy. This will be a UK festival exclusive performance so if you’re a fan of Pete and co, we damn right expect to see you right at the very front barrier. Having recently released brand spanking new material, their performance this summer will feature a backlog of both old and new material, definitely not to be missed. Sheffield’s finest metal exports, Bring Me The Horizon are back on Leeds Festival main stage 2013. Having gone from local metalcore kings to one of the world’s most infamous acts, the five piece are to release their new album “Sempiternal” in April of this year…we may have heard it and it may be absolutely amazing. Throwing together melodic cleans along with fierce bass lines, BMTH are masters at putting on a show you will never forget. And remember, a black eye is a badge of honour right?! Foals have played Leeds Festival three times before, working their way up from the smallest tent to this year taking their rightful place on the Main Stage. Recently nominated for “Best Track” with their single Inhaler and “Best Live Band” at this year’s NME awards, Foals run a strict skinny jeans policy so only those with bandy legs are allowed to watch their set. This is a total lie. All these acts are added to the already announced headliners Eminem and Deftones. Leeds Festival 2013 will also feature Alt-J, Sub Focus and Boy Better Know (ft. Forget David Attenborough - one of the greatest mysteries of the modern world is: how the hell did Splash manage to nab itself a second series? This unfathomable question ranks alongside: how does Kerry Katona keep getting work? How does any female member of The Only Way is Essex manage to stand upright (without the aid of a complex cantilever system), and, who would voluntarily have sex with Katie Price (for reasons other than to sell their story to Twattè Magazine)? These questions will probably never be answered, but it’s clear from six million viewers that the British public has more than a screw lose when it comes to Splash. While I can’t deny it was a stroke of genius getting Tom Daley in nothing but his budgie smugglers for an hour, I still think making Vegetable Mastermind would have more actual integrity. Splash really is low brow television of the highest possible order and there’s a reason it came under such criticism by the press: IT WAS CRAP. In fact, I was so shocked and appalled by the quality of the show that I had to watch it on repeat. Thrice*. Fortunately, Splash is now over for this year. I know you’re all as gutted as I am, but as you know, producers are now desperate to recreate the show’s ‘magic’ with some other shows of a similar ilk. So, here are my suggestions for some late night TV fun. Probably very late night... Celebrity Caber Tossing with Geoff Capes – watch Geoff and pals tossing their cabers live on ITV. The two losers go through to the Toss Off with Jason Gardiner. Getting Your Leg Over with Jessica Ennis – another old favourite, this show sees golden girl

Jess teaching zelebrities how to do the hundred meter hurdles. Celebrity Log Flogging – watch z-listers trying to sell their wood to the highest bidder (I hear Christopher Biggins features heavily in the pilot). I Have Got Wood – a show where Bill Oddie has to guess from which country a celebrity’s wood comes (Gillian McKeith showed everyone her lovely Scottish bush in the first episode). A prelunchtime version of this show has been planned, appropriately called: I’ve got Morning Wood. And there you go. Four shows that are literally filled with promise but will never see the light of day because they’re so utterly awful. That didn’t stop Splash, sadly. I could stop protesting about it and simply not watch the second series. I could avoid Splash entirely, but frankly, watching Daley’s face as he tries to keep the male contestants at arm’s length as they celebrate every successful dive with a manly hug is simply a joy to behold (can’t look gay, can’t look GAY!, he thinks approximately every seventeen nanoseconds). It’s moments like that that really fill me with pleasure. Am I twisted? Probably! And... I’m spent. There’s more twisted TV mockery next week. Unless this column was too much for my editor and I’m retired to the news section to report on Girls Aloud for the rest of their career (which will only be about two minutes so it’s not all bad). *I didn’t actually watch Splash on repeat. Once was enough. More than enough, actually. And even then I was surfing the web looking for pills that could alleviate the agony of Saturday night television. From wiping off a horse after exercise to reduce the risk of chills and providing a tray of grass in your house for indoor rabbits, to some very simple things which wildlife lovers can do - these small steps could make a big difference. Winter can also be challenging for birds, hedgehogs, squirrels. Every year between one and two thousand wild animals are brought into RSPCA wildlife centres in December, January and February suffering from dehydration, hunger and cold. Last year, there were nearly 500 in December alone. As the countdown to the Festival continues (only 5 weeks to go!) this Saturday sees another round of preparatory races from Newbury and Warwick which can often provide clues to some of the Festival’s big races. There are six races scheduled to be shown on Channel 4 – four from Newbury and two from Warwick.

MILLERS SILENCE COBBLERS ROTHERHAM UNITED breathed new life into their League Two promotion charge by putting fellow challengers Northampton Town to the sword at New York Stadium. Following indifferent home form of late, Daniel Nardiello notched his 14th goal of the season from the spot to put the Millers in charge before second-half strikes from Ben Pringle and David Noble saw Steve Evans’ coast to a much-needed victory. Following their disappointing home reversal at the hands of Bristol Rovers last time out, the Millers made four changes to their starting line-up. The visitors started brightly and they had the first sight of goal when a ball was drilled into the feet of Adebayo Akinfenwa, who showed clever footwork to evade the challenge of Johnny Mullins, before drilling a low effort which was smothered by Andy Warrington. Moments later, Chris Hackett cleverly exchanged passes with Akinfenwa, paving the way for a glimpse of the target but under pressure he blazed his shot well over the bar. Following back-to-back corners, Pringle floated an inswinger to the front post and Slew showed great invention to backflick the ball towards goal but the ball rolled tantalisingly wide of the upright. With the game finely poised, the visitors’ came within a whisker of the breakthrough when Jake Robinson cut inside from the left flank leaving Pringle in his wake before unleashing a rasping drive from distance which swerved in the air before crashing against the upright and then rolling to safety, to the Millers’ relief. Moments later, the Millers were again denied by the woodwork when a fantastic outside of the boot pass from Michael O’Connor switched play to the rampaging Liam Ridehalgh, whose first time cross flashed across the box but with Nicholls just a bystander, the ball smashed against the crossbar. The Millers were rewarded for the pressure just five minutes before the interval when Northampton failed to clear a Ridehalgh cross and Bradley pounced on the loose ball before being tripped just inside the box by Ben Harding, leaving referee Miller no option but to point to the spot. From the resultant penalty, Nardiello kept his composure to calmly send Nicholls the wrong way before finding the corner of the goal to notch his 14th goal of the season in all competitions.

In the aftermath of the goal, Nardiello celebrated by blasting the ball into the jubilant home faithful and was duly booked by the referee on their return to the centre spot. Following the interval, Rotherham started with a positive intent and after Northampton failed to clear decisively, Pringle nodded the ball into the path of Slew, whose instinctive first-time effort looked destined for the far corner but Ben Tozer bravely blocked his effort. Seconds later, Nardiello rampaged through the heart of the Cobblers’ rearguard before fizzing a low effort which forced Nicholls into a smart save. The ex-Barnsley striker came within inches of notching his second of the afternoon minutes later as he was the first to meet Pringle’s inswinging corner but he couldn’t control his header as it dribbled across the goalmouth. The Millers were looking the most likely and Bradley swung a delightful centre which was met by the head of Odejayi, but his header blazed wide of the target. However, against the run of play, Akinfenwa worked a shooting position for Hackett, and although his first effort was blocked by retreating defenders, his second strike forced Warrington into a superb reflex save. Just past the hour mark, Bradley saw yellow for hauling down Widdowson in full flight before Rotherham almost notched their second when Pringle danced around Carlisle with a minimum of fuss before pulling the ball back into the path of Odejayi, whose cushioned ball saw Ridehalgh crash a fierce drive which wizzed narrowly over the crossbar. However, the Millers were not to be denied as they gave themselves a much-needed cushion with their second goal on 75 minutes. A ball forward from Ridehalgh was flicked on inavertedly into the path of Pringle, who pounced on the loose ball and after weighing up his options, he superbly drilled a stinging drive into the far corner of goal giving Nicholls no chance. The Millers were running riot at this stage and they put the game beyond doubt with their third on 79 minutes. The home side turned defence into attack with the blink of an eye and Nardiello rounded Tozer with ease before curling an effort which forced Nicholls into a full-stretch save but Noble was quick to capitalise on the loose ball by lifting the ball before calmly stroking the ball home from six yards. O’Connor came within a whisker of adding a fourth with a delicate free-kick from just outside the box which Nicholls was forced to parry over, before the exScunthorpe midfielder left the fray to a standing ovation. Despite the home dominance, the visitors had the final say with effectively the last play of the match when Hackett’s superb delivery found the head of Carlisle, whose point-blank header gave Warrington no chance.

BURY STUN ROVERS A cold, dry and fine afternoon dawned for the match against Bury. It’s over nine years since the Rovers visited Gigg Lane and a similar result, it was 3-1 to the Rovers, would have been great. The transfer window had closed without the Rovers adding to their squad but Bury had released some players and brought others in. The Rovers starting line-up was unchanged from their last match a fortnight ago against Leyton Orient. Bury made two changes from last Saturday’s starting lineup, newcomer Carl Regan replacing David Worrall and Andy Bishop coming in for Lenell John-Lewis, who was released during the week. The Rovers kicked off and spent the first few minutes in the Bury half without troubling the keeper. However, in the 4th minute, Coppinger and Bennett linked up well as the latter moved across the pitch before shooting from the edge of the area but putting wide as he was challenged. Bury then got into the game, with Woods having to come out to the edge of his area to clear a long ball. Then, in the 11th minute, a free kick on the Rovers right from Cotterill was met with a firm header by Brown but Carson saved well. The referee then dished out a couple of cautions, first to Quinn for a foul on Ajose and five minutes later to Eastham for handball. In the 20th minute a free kick by Cotterill came out of the home defence to Jones on the 18yard line but he shot hurriedly high and wide. At the other end Schumacher had a go from 30yards but it was well over the bar. Then, in the 26th minute, the deadlock was broken when a cross from the Bury left, was met at the near post by BISHOP with a glancing header into the far corner of the net. On the half hour the Rovers won the first corner of the game but nothing came from it. But that wasn’t the case in the 35th minute when Bury won a corner. Skarz put an inswinger to the far post where AJOSE put it into the net. The Rovers tried to hit back before the break but they came up against a brick wall that was the Bury defence. In added time Coppinger tried a shot from 25 yards but put wide. The Rovers hit their stride straight from the start of the second half but it the 52nd minute before any meaningful action in front of goal and then

it was the home team, with Ajose getting in a shot from 25yards that was high and wide. At the other end a free kick by Cotterill caused panic in the home penalty box before the referee deemed the ball had gone out for a goal kick and not a corner. In the 57th minute, Schumacher took a free kick from 30yards but blazed high and wide. From the goal kick Brown collected but put his shot wide. Then a good Rovers attack down their right led to Quinn crossing to the middle but it was put wide. On the hour a Rovers defensive lapse in the middle let Bishop in on goal but Woods beat his shot out and McCombe put out for a corner. From this point on it was all Rovers. Playing good football they besieged the Bury goal. McCombe put a close range rebound over the bar, Jones headed wide from a long throw by Spurr and a good run through the middle by Coppinger ending with a stinging shot was tipped over the bar by Carson. Jones followed up another good attack and from a rebound put wide, Cotterill followed suit a minute later and then headed wide at the far post to another attack. The ball would not go into the net for the Rovers despite the incessant attacks. In injury time Bury should have added a third goal when they broke away but were stopped and then the ball fell to Thompson three yards from goal but he scooped it over the bar. It was a case of 13th time lucky for Bury after twelve winless games and 13th time unlucky for the Rovers to end their unbeaten away run.

A late goal prevented United’s improved second half performance earn a point in Friday night’s encounter at Bramall Lane. Dave Kitson’s scored from a Barry Robson corner as United battled back from an early Leon Clarke goal but the Coventry striker added a second with three minutes to go. Robson and Jonathan Forte both impressed as substitutes but the Blades remain without a league win in 2013. Boss Wilson opted to name new arrivals Forte and Robson on the bench but there were recalls for Collins and Flynn, who took the places of Westlake, who dropped to the bench, and Premiership-bound Blackman. The line-up of the team saw Higginbotham start at left-back for the Blades for the first time, allowing Collins and Maguire to re-acquaint in the heart of the defence. It was United’s rearguard that were tested first, Coventry winning a succession of corners and Baker wasting a good opportunity at the back post from Elliott’s cross. The Kop attempted to lift the home side and Higginbotham made a couple of timely interventions but the Blades fell behind on 14 minutes. Porter gave away a cheap throw and from a resulting Baker cross, CLARKE’s effort deflected off Maguire and found the net via the underside of the crossbar. McSheffrey shot wide after McMahon’s mistake and United’s only attempts of the first half hour came from Kitson, his first a header from 15 yards and his second a long-range shot, which was blocked. McMahon picked up a yellow card on the half hour, referee Sarginson indicating a series of fouls by the right-back, and Kitson was the second booked for a lunge at Baker. The later stages of the half saw United

operate more in Coventry’s territory but without seriously hurting the visiting side’s back four. Murphy fired over a half-chance early in the second period but Long had to make a save from Edjenguele’s header on 50 minutes to ensure the Blades did not fall further behind. Forte was introduced for his second debut on 54 minutes, replacing Porter, and it gave the crowd a lift, three sides of S2 finding their voice. The substitute soon registered United’s first effort on target, shooting at goalkeeper Murphy, who gathered at the second attempt, after Doyle had challenged from a Higginbotham cross. Long had to save an effort from distance by Baker and McMahon blocked from McSheffrey but the Blades were attempting to mount a spell of pressure. On 67 minutes there were huge shouts for a penalty but the referee said no. Higginbotham’s forward ball was headed down by Kitson and McDonald took a touch before he appeared to be held back by Adams, just yards from goal. Robson was introduced with just under 20 minutes to go and he was influential in United levelling. The debutant’s first touch was to deliver a corner, from which KITSON powerfully headed past Murphy from six yards. Kitson volleyed wide soon after as United forced the visitors back. Forte hooked one wide as the game entered the final ten minutes, whilst Robson was offside after an enterprising run from Flynn. McDonald was booked for a tired challenge and United’s games crumbled on 87 minutes. Kitson’s pass was intercepted by Moussa and although his effort was parried by Long, CLARKE was ideally positioned to slot home the rebound. It could have been worse following a break from a Blades corner but Long saved with his feet from Thomas. Five minutes of added time brought hope -

Robson’s shot was blocked and Doyle ﬁred over - but the last action was Long saving from Jennings as a third consecutive home defeat was conﬁrmed soon after.

Danny Wilson felt his team deserved at least a point from Friday’s League One clash with Coventry City. Leon Clarke’s brace helped the Sky Blues to a 2-1 win at Bramall Lane to consign the Blades to a third consecutive home defeat, despite Dave Kitson’s second-half strike. Speaking afterwards, Wilson was adamant his team shouldn’t have lost the game, although he was critical of their first half showing. The Blades boss commented: “I can’t believe we lost the game in the end and the fans will probably be thinking the same because we were excellent in the second half. “We were massively off the pace in the first half and Coventry took advantage. “But we got our teeth into the game after the break and played some good football without the ball bouncing our way. “We felt we had a stonewall penalty turned down for a foul on Kevin (McDonald) and that could have changed the complexion of the game completely. “Decisions aren’t going our and it is doubly frustrating that a misplaced pass has cost us at the other end.” Wilson continued: “It was certainly a game of two halves. We didn’t have any fluency in our play in the first half and Coventry deserved their lead. “The second half was a total contrast, we were positive from the off, created chances and got the equaliser. “There only looked like being one winner, but one slip has cost us the game and that sums up our luck at the moment. “Some weeks you get punished for your mistakes and the luck was with Coventry which is unfortunate. “The fans will be disgruntled, but no more so then myself and the players and it is down to us to turn things around, starting on Tuesday against Crawley Town.”

Danny Wilson is backing Jonathan Forte and Barry Robson to play an instrumental part in the Blades promotion push. The duo, signed on transfer deadline day, impressed as second half substitutes in Friday’s defeat to Coventry and Wilson believes both will be instrumental between now and the end of the season. Speaking of the contribution of his aforementioned recruits against the Sky Blues, Wilson commented: “Jonathan (Forte) made a real impact from the moment he was introduced. “Supporters will have noticed he has changed since the last time he played for the Blades and that comes through experience. “He gives us exactly what we need, a threat in behind, genuine pace and his movement makes life tough for the opposition. “Barry (Robson) is an old head and on the ball has real class. The fact he hasn’t played for three months means we have to use him carefully initially to avoid him picking up a knock. “His ﬁrst touch was the pinpoint corner for the equaliser, so again he has plenty to offer us and gives us something a bit different to what we already have. “Hopefully with Barry we can get him up to full speed within a week or two.” When questioned about his plans to enter the loan market when it re-opens later this week, Wilson added: “If someone becomes available and we feel he would add something to the squad then we would look to bring him in, but at the moment that isn’t the case. “We have to know what is available to us elsewhere and if we can improve the squad then obviously we would look to do so.”

Sheffield Wednesday turned in an impressive Hillsborough display to beat ten-man Brighton 3-1 on Saturday. Leroy Lita and Danny Pugh put the Owls into the ascendancy and Ashley Barnes was sent off to compound the first half damage. Andrea Orlandi pulled one back for the visitors early in the second period only to see Michail Antonio extend Wednesday’s lead and ultimately seal victory. Brighton arrived on the cusp of the play-offs and needing a positive result to keep on the shirt tails of the top six, while Wednesday were out to move into the clutch of clubs directly above them in the table at the other end having markedly improved their form in 2013. And that pedigree continued just four minutes in when Lita fired the Owls in front.

Antonio picked up possession down the left ﬂank and sent over a looping ball into the danger zone, where Lita was on hand to cleverly volley past Tomasz Kuszczak. Brighton responded with Inigo Calderon forcing Miguel Llera into evasive action a yard from goal after some good work down the right, before Chris Kirkland saved low from Leonardo Calderon moments later. The contest then settled into an even affair, with the Seagulls perhaps edging the attacking threat – until their chances of taking something back to Sussex were dramatically reduced ten minutes before half time. First, Barnes saw red for a late lunge on Kieran Lee and from the resulting free kick, Pugh smashed in a rasping drive from a tight angle that nestled into the back of the net. That double blow gave Brighton a mountain to climb in the second half and Gus Poyet introduced livewire striker Craig Mackail-Smith to aid the cause. The former Peterborough man looked typically busy in the early throes but Wednesday almost put the game out of reach when Lita slotted inches wide following a drilled cross from Jeremy Helan. But on 53 minutes, Brighton reduced the arrears – with Mackail-Smith at the heart of the action. The bubbly hitman danced his way into

the penalty area only to see a snapshot cleared off the line by Pugh and Orlandi was on hand to blast home the rebound. But the visitors’ joy was short-lived as Wednesday promptly restored their twogoal advantage. Pugh swung an accurate corner to the back post and the alert Antonio forced the ball over the line from close range. From that juncture, the points looked safe for Wednesday but there was still time for controversy late on when a block by Pugh on Calderon earned the Owls loanee a booking and led to a melee in the technical areas, with Dave Jones and Brighton ﬁrst team coach Charlie Oatway each sent to the stand.

WINDOWS, ILLUMANATI AND CHEQUES FANʼS COLUMN by Bunsen Bob The two transfer windows that Sky Sports so lovingly indulge us with every year are just as pointless as the need to display an armageddon-like countdown to tell us when it will be, thankfully, over. I am yet to hear a valid argument for the system which seems only to hike up already inflated transfer fees by imposing a deadline on floundering managers desperate to add to their squad. Obviously the new-age armchair dwelling, Football Manager playing ‘fan’ laps up this gaudy mess so I’m afraid we are stuck with it for the foreseeable future. I believe this is down to the Illuminati or football agents, if there is a difference of course. But what of Wednesday’s involvement? Well, the massive countdown on Sky seemed to affect some fans who put their, “Get yer cheque book out Milan!” track on repeat (are transfer fees still paid by cheque? Is anything?). Our beloved saviour is by no means a Sugar Daddy. He bailed us out in heroic fashion but he’s never really spent massively or at least he won’t with us. Quite frankly, I didn’t want Dave Jones to be handed a Relegation Battle War Chest (or blank cheque) because his signings as Wednesday supremo have been poor to average. Anyway, our recent revival which has seen 6 wins and 2 draws from 10 games was ignited before the transfer window slipped off it’s corrupt latch. That said, who can argue with the impact that Leroy Halirou Bohari Lita has had in his first two appearances? He came in similar circumstances to Jay Bothroyd; lacking in opportunities at his parent club. Thankfully, well hopefully anyway, that is where the similarities end. Wednesday are on a bit of a roll at the moment and I think DJ has tweaked things just enough to hopefully ensure that we are a Championship club when the next transfer windows opens in August. I can’t wait.

Dave Jones insists his players will be keeping their feet ﬁrmly on the ground following the Owls’ impressive 3-1 win over Brighton at Hillsborough. Jones’ side overcame the ten-man Seagulls to take their recent record to six wins, two draws and just one defeat in the last nine games. He said: “We won’t be getting too carried away, we’ll be keeping our feet on the ground because that’s the only way you can be. “You can’t get too down when you are losing games and you can’t get too up when you are winning them. “You have to stay grounded, keep focused and keep on working hard, which is what we are doing.” Jones hailed his side’s performance against Brighton as ‘outstanding’ and pointed to the win as a measure of the progress Wednesday have made since the reverse ﬁxture in Sussex earlier in the season, which the Owls lost 3-0. He said: “I thought we were outstanding today against a very good, dangerous team with some very good players. “We had quality all over the pitch and it showed. We had a bit of a wobble when they scored early in the second half but we scored our third goal at just the right time to get us back on track. “I think it shows how far we have come since we went down there in September. We have done to them what they did to us in winning the game comfortably. “I have always said we are a work in progress but we are heading in the right direction and that is the main thing.” Jones wouldn’t be drawn on the second half incident that saw him banished to the stand following a melee on the touchline involving both benches. He said: “I don’t really want to talk about it, I would rather talk about the result and the performance. “All I would say is that it was nothing really but the referee made the right decision in taking the heat out of the situation.” The manager also issued an update on Reda Johnson, who was absent from the squad for the Brighton win. Johnson has taken a knock on the foot injury that dictated his absence earlier in the term and has travelled to France for further assessment.
