SUPPORT OUR WOMEN OF STEEL Sheffield City Council last week launched the ‘Women of Steel’ fundraising appeal, calling on people to come forward to help raise £150,000 for a permanent memorial to Sheffield’s inspiring women.

The appeal will raise money to commemorate a special group of Sheffield women aptly named the ‘Women of Steel’. The women worked tirelessly in Sheffield’s steelworks and factories, during the two world wars. Their bravery, determination, work ethic and guts in the unfamiliar surroundings of the factory floors has been virtually un-recognised over the last seventy years.

But now Sheffield wants to

celebrate and congratulate this remarkable group of women with a statue in their honour.

In order to fund this project the Council is calling on everyone to get involved. £150,000 is needed to produce a figurative statue made of bronze which will be in Barkers Pool.

Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council Said: “We all owe it to these amazing women to make the statue a reality. If everyone in the city gave as little as 30 pence we’d have enough for the Women of Steel statue. That’s half the price of a first class stamp.

“I’m calling on everyone out there to do what they can to help us raise money, have a bake sale, sit in a

bath of beans, do the Star Walk, run the half marathon or just donate. It doesn’t matter what you do, we just want you to get behind these wonderful women.”

Woman of Steel Kathleen Roberts said: “I know people haven’t got a lot of money at the moment but we just want people to give what they can.

“I think the Sheffield industry could give more because they give so freely to others. I don’t think people appreciate what we did. I worked 12 hours a day, six days a week. I only had Saturdays off and I was 20 years old. I gave up my youth to work in the factories.

“Times were tough in 1941, as a country we had our

backs against the wall. We worked flat out for the work effort and we were just young girls. It breaks my heart that we haven’t been recognised and everyone else has been, I just want people to please give what they can so we can have a lasting memory of what we did.”

There are many different ways people can get involved. There will be events across the city raising money, independent fundraising projects, and donations through justgiving.com.

The statue has been designed by artist Martin Jennings. The Women of Steel and Martin Jennings have been working together on the design and the

macquette has now been unveiled.

Woman of Steel Ruby Gascoigne said: “I’m thrilled Martin Jennings was commissioned to work on this project. We are very pleased with his work, it’s a beautiful statue. It’s just lovely and I am chuffed to bits.”

Woman of Steel Kit Solitt said: “I’m happy our efforts in the steel factories are finally being recognised. Seventy years later it’s about time we got recognised, I’m so happy it’s on its way. I’m looking forward to seeing the end product.”

MARCH IS FREE MUSIC MONTH FOR TODDLERS Sheffield composer and singer Vanessa Johnson is starting a new music group for 0-4 year olds in Crookes with a month of free taster sessions this March to spring things into action.

Vanessa is launching the fun new Songbuds group to meet growing demand since she began the first one in Stannington last year. The sessions are led by singer Vanessa, who lives in Stannington with husband Dave and three-year-old daughter Jenny. Vanessa has performed at the world’s biggest music festivals, had her work featured in major commercials and Hollywood films and has recorded with Sony and Chrysalis Music.

Other professional musicians make guest appearances at Songbuds so that babies and toddlers can experience a wide range of musical styles and hear live instruments.

Vanessa: “It’s fun and different, mixing traditional material with original new songs written by me especially for our groups, then learning them together with song sheets so parents can sing and share Songbuds at home with their children.

We also have free-flow musical play every Songbuds session when children try out child size instruments in the room. This gives young ones a chance to express themselves, clanging, dinging, strumming and experimenting with music without having tons of equipment at home or disturbing the neighbours, and adults can have a coffee and chat too!”

Vanessa: “We will be running the Crookes sessions at St Vincent’s Church on Wednesday mornings starting on March 6th. Parents and carers looking for something exciting and stimulating to do with their young children are very welcome to book onto a free session. Skills Holidays have been selected to take part in the new documentary series “Britain’s Secret Shoppers” to be aired on Channel 4 in February 2013. The series “help businesses increase their profits and grow their client bases!”

Filming and interviews were conducted from August to November 2012 in and out of the office, in shops on the coaches and on tour with TV crews, business analysts and the shows business experts, providing detailed analysis and developing new ideas alongside MD Nigel Skill and his team “the TV crew pretty much moved in, it’s surprising how much time goes into filming and making a TV show” said Nigel Skill.

The host of the new show ‘Britain’s Secret Shoppers’ is meat entrepreneur Justin Preston.

Justin will go undercover as well as work with members of Skills Holidays team to help the business deliver great deals for their customers.

Using secret focus groups Justin proves that sometimes customers really do know best, and explore how Britain’s businesses can offer the best deals to super-serve their loyal customers and make a tidy sum themselves.

When asked what it was like being involved in a new TV series for Channel 4, Nigel Skill replied “It was an experience and an eye opener to say the least. I’m really proud that all of the Skills team got on board with this project, pushing many outside their comfort zones and some of the tasks

presented were quite bizarre, especially in front of TV cameras for a show that will air to millions of people. We have all learnt a great deal in the past six months which I believe will give more people the confidence to choose Skills for their next holiday.”

He went on “We believe the series will help boost confidence in the coach tourism industry as well as our own business and help other operators improve along the way too. The advice and suggestions from Justin have been implemented and we are already seeing results from this that has led to increased enquiries and sales in January. A ladies group from Ecclesfield in Sheffield were so moved by a talk given to them by The Sick Children's Trust's Treetop House Manager, Ann Wyatt, that they decided to support the charity's current fundraising appeal.

The Sick Children's Trust's Branching Out Appeal will raise funds to build a new 11 bedroom house on Sheffield Children's Hospital site. The charity needs to raise £980,000 to build the new house which will provide accommodation for families of sick children being treated in hospital.

The 36 members from Ecclesfield Ladies' Group invited house manager Ann to speak late last year about the work of the charity. Irene Proctor, chairlady, from the group said: "We we're really impressed by Ann and the work of the charity not only in the Yorkshire region but all across the UK too. Every year we choose a charity to donate a sum to and this year, what with The Sick Children's Trust in great need with their £980,000 fundraising appeal, we couldn't think of a better cause.

"When our group was first formed 46 years ago it was originally a mums group so children's charities have always been close to our heart but as the age of the members got older we decided to change the name. However a lot of our members are grandmas too so we still have a soft spot for charities which support the family even now. The thought of one of my grandchildren being a lone in hospital is unbearable and before we met Ann we weren't even aware of the situation that some families are put in with the lack of hospital accommodation which is why we were delighted to donate the £250."

The group meet every Thursday, one week they have a speaker and on the alternative week they have a coffee evening where members can sit and talk, have a discussion or a quiz. During the year they also have outings, summer party and twice a year as well as other activities.

Ann Wyatt, House Manager at Treetop House, the charity's existing ‘Home from Home' added: "I am delighted by the generosity of this ladies' group and the money raised will go towards a great cause."

Food Review: Kashmiri Aroma 798 Chesterfield Road, Woodseats Laura from meanmuncher.blogspot.com I bring good news to those readers who happen to live in Meersbrook, Woodseats or Greenhill because you can legitimately call this curry haven your “local”. For those of us who live a little further afield, atop one of the other seven hills that make Sheffield the British equivalent of Rome, you may need to call a taxi.

Call it you should because this little gem is worth a visit.

Now I don’t wish to over sell Kashmiri Aroma but in my very humble (and often flawed) opinion, this is the best curry in Sheffield. Or maybe even the world. Okay, let’s not get too ahead of ourselves because I have not tasted every curry in the world.

However, I probably have tasted nearly every curry in Sheffield.

There’s nothing here that you wouldn’t expect in other curry houses: friendly staff, pleasant interior, beautiful food, an extensive menu and a recorded version of happy birthday that will, without doubt, be blasted out for some poor soul who will be presented with a chocolate “bombe”, garnished with genuine firework.

The thing, though, that makes Kashmiri Aroma different is that it’s consistently good. They don’t rest on their laurels after you’ve been a few times, they’re not lazy with their service when they work out, after your fifth visit that week, that you’re addicted to their food. They always want you to have a great night and they will never take your business

for granted.

The building itself is a huge white block containing roughly 60% call centre and 40% lovely restaurant.

The restaurant is on the lowest level and elicits no thoughts of “but WHY is it you feel you don’t want to change supplier?” (except for me, as I used to work there selling gas and electricity).

If you once worked at the call centre too then don’t panic because as soon as you sit down to enjoy the hastily presented and wonderfully tasty pickles, you’ll be transported off to another world. Apparently, there are indeed other worlds out there and many are rumoured to contain parallel steel cities; so this is definitely not just a flippant metaphor an amateur food reviewer might write down when stuck for descriptive words.

The starters menu provides more dishes to choose from than many restaurants manage on their whole menu: soups, sizzlers, kebabs, tikkas, seafood and veggie galore! If you are as ham-fisted as I am when it comes to making decisions, my best advice is to blindfold yourself with a napkin, spin around three times, divide your mother’s maiden name by 27 and take the dish that comes. It’ll be delicious anyway.

When it comes to the mains, if you want to enjoy a good old can’t-go-wrong curry, I urge you to order the lamb karahi. Those succulent pieces of tender lamb are like butter in your mouth. Whichever curry you order, you will be guaranteed numerous pieces of meat and you won’t be forced to become some sort of biryani game show contestant, charged with finding the elusive chunk of winning protein.

Veggies, fish lovers and philistines alike are all amply catered for here (yes, they even serve chicken nuggets), so book a table and make your way there for this is a curry you don’t want to miss out on.

LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY

A Lasting Power of Attorney lets you appoint someone to make decisions on your behalf.

It’s normally used when someone is unable to make their own decisions.

There are 2 types: • health and welfare • property and financial affairs You can choose to make one type of Lasting Power of Attorney or both.

Health and welfare Lasting Power of Attorney This allows you to choose 1 person or more to make decisions about things like: • your daily routine (eg eating and what to wear) • medical care • moving into a care home • refusing life-sustaining treatment This Lasting Power of Attorney can only be used once someone is unable to make their own decisions.

Property and financial affairs Lasting Power of Attorney This lets you choose 1 person or more to make decisions about money and property for you, eg: • paying bills • collecting benefits • selling your home You can appoint someone to look after your property and financial affairs at any time.

Austin encourages doing Power of Attorney sooner rather than later so that you are able to make an informed decision about your attorney.

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 must be used to define whether you have the capacity to appoint an attorney. This means a lack of capacity in consequence of impairment of brain or mind, which is usually as a result of disease, alcohol or drugs. If there is no impairment but not the capacity it will not count as lacking capacity. A person is assumed to have capacity unless the person wanting to make a decision proves it and has taken all practical steps to help you make a decision.

For example if you have a dementia and are capable in the early afternoon. Decisions must be the least restrictive in the light of their rights.

The donor (person who is authorising) will have to identify who will act as donor, that they are willing, their relationship, ability and are willing to put time in. The Attorney can be more than one and jointly or severally and whether there are restrictions to their powers.

It is compulsory that proposed Attorneys read the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and assumes that you understand it. The Act also has a best interest check list and states that you must take into consideration decisions already made.

Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney is at least as important, if not more, than Finance and Property, especially at a time with decreasing health and social care budgets. If you do not have a Health and Welfare Power of Attorney then decisions will be made by Social Workers etc.

Finance and Welfare Power of Attorney can be used if you still have capacity, provided that you say so. It is easier to say use now and then the Attorney does not have to prove you do not have capacity.

Power of Attorney does not allow Deprivation of Liberty and the duties of an Attorney are mainly common sense.

If you do not taken out Power of Attorney and are unable to manage your own affiars then you have to apply to the Court of Protection for Deputyship. Health and Welfare Deputyships are rarely granted.

Chesterfield gets in the blitz spirit with a full programme of all things 1940s in a series of events organised by Chesterfield Borough Council.

Back for the third year running, the 1940s weekend takes place from Friday 1 to Sunday 3 March and includes events at the Winding Wheel, Chesterfield Museum and the Pomegranate Theatre.

The event kicks off on the Friday evening with a swing jive dance in the Winding Wheel auditorium with local band SwingAmathing accompanying the revelry. Tickets cost £7.50.

Saturday and Sunday will see a vintage fair in the Winding Wheel from 10am-4pm featuring a vintage market in the auditorium, live entertainment in the ballroom and a 40s style café in the function room.

Make a splash in fancy dress at Water Bombing Fancy doing something different? Macmillan Cancer Support is looking for teams of four to bomb off the top diving boards – in fancy dress - at Ponds Forge in Sheffield!

The World Water Bombing Championships, now in its ninth year, will be back with a splash on 1 May 2013 at 6.30pm, and promises to be the biggest event yet! Bombers can get creative with fancy dress and team names for this wet and wonderful way of raising money for people affected by cancer.

The event is sponsored by Matthew Twigg Foods – suppliers of Pukka Pies, eBECS – Experts in Microsoft Dynamics and Sheffield International Venues.

Bombers will be launching themselves of either the 1m or 3m diving platform, for this fun event. Each team is then graded based on style, splash and presentation by a judging panel which includes two Macmillan nurses and a mystery guest.

George Thomson, captain of reigning champions MMA Allstars (pictured) said, “I have taken part in the last five World Water Bombing Championships.

I first signed up after finding out that my father had cancer and was being helped by the Macmillan Nurses. Sadly he passed away a couple of weeks after the event but since then I’ve helped to raises £6500 for Macmillan Cancer Support so they can continue the fantastic support they provide.”

He continues, “The most fun part of the event for me is the fancy dress. Every year the standard

gets better and better. In the past I have dressed up as bomber pilot, Spartacus and a member of LMFAO. This year we will be defending our title and we want brave and ever so slightly mad people to compete against us and raise vital funds for Macmillan.”

Over the next two years Macmillan is spending £800,000 in South Yorkshire to develop a range of new services and posts in the city, including an End of Life Care project Team based across Sheffield Hospitals and in care homes who will support and care for patients, plus a 1-2-1 Support Nurse who will support Colorectal and Breast Cancer patients who have been discharged following treatment.

If you don’t fancy getting wet you can also come down and lend your support for this fantastic event. A PUKKA pie and peas will also be available at the discount price of £2.50 for hungry bombers and their supporters.

To take part, each team pays a £20 registration fee and aims to raise a minimum of £376 sponsorship -. £376 could fund two Macmillan nurses for a whole day, giving vital help and support in Sheffield. SHEFFIELD ROCKS FOR ‘THE BIG C’

Local musicians and bands are coming together to provide a night of non- stop music at the 02 Academy in Sheffield to raise money for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

‘The Big C’ will feature headlining act, Riffler, as well as supporting band, Kings of the Realm and others, who are all ready to rock on Saturday 23rd of March from 6.30pm.

The band members, who have all been closely touched by cancer, are coming together for a live musical extravaganza, in a bid to raise as much money as possible for a cause so close to their hearts.

56 year old event organiser, John Grant, who is the Drummer for the main band Riffler said, “In the last 2 years I have lost both my father and brother to cancer.

Weston Park Hospital couldn’t do enough to support my family through this distressing time and organising this concert is my way of saying how grateful we all are.”

Funds raised at the concert will all go towards Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s Do Your Bit Campaign, which is being fronted by Hollywood Legend and Charity Patron, Sean Bean.

Sarah Cross, Charity Fundraiser said, “We are so very grateful to John and his band for organising such a fantastic event which will help support our Do Your Bit campaign.

The money raised from the event will contribute to the building of a state-of-the art Cancer Research and Treatment suite at Weston Park Hospital which will benefit cancer patients across the region and

help keep Weston Park Hospital at the forefront of cancer treatment.”

The Riffler’s Lead Guitarist, Paul Madin, who is also Technical Director at Sheffield Forgemasters, has an extremely poignant reason behind supporting the concert. Paul said, “My wife was treated and initially cured of Parotid cancer 20 years ago at Weston Park Hospital.

Unfortunately, 15 years later after mothering our 3 children, she was diagnosed with an unrelated form of cancer that sadly took her life. I will be eternally grateful to Weston Park Hospital for giving me the invaluable extra 15 years I got to spend with my family.”

The venue, which has played host to the likes of rock legends Papa Roach and British rock band, The Cult, is the ideal setting for a night of what promises to be a strumming success.

As well as gaining support from local bands and including special guest appearances on the night, The Big C is also being supported by Sheffield’s very own Lord Mayor, John Campbell.

John said, “I am a big supporter of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity therefore I am delighted that Sheffield’s music community is planning to come together for a special night in support of the Charity’s Do You Bit Campaign.”

Another Valentine’s Day over with, and what an eductional show I had that morning.

I was joined by husband and wife team Andrew and Anna Wallas, who have just penned a book outlining their take and their story on how to make a relationship work after they met in the most unlikely of circumstances.

Years in the dating game, journalist Anna reluctantly took the advice to start attending psychotherapy sessions. Some time later she and therapist Andrew hit it off, and realised they were true soul mates and life partners.

Now they’re sharing their secrets in “Call off the search”.

So, what do you need to do to have that ideal connection?

We threw down the gauntlet.

Suggestions from our listeners ranged from being more understanding of one another to having mutual interests to separate beds.

Andrew and Anna say it’s actually honesty that matters.

We need to be honest with ourselves and then with each other. They did confess that it’s even resulted in confrontations when out clothes shopping, and Anna’s asked “Does my bum look big in this?”

Personally I would have probably bitten my lip rather than give a bad answer.

It’s pretty amazing to track the progress Don Broco have made since their formation back in 2008. Stemming from Bedford and forming their alternative rock group just months after they left university, the four piece has gone on to sell out national tours, headline some of the UK’s best festivals along with snatching up a top twenty album. Now with a totally sold out ‘Priorities’ tour ready and set to kick off, the suited and booted brigade are to bring their snappy live show to Sheffield’s Corporation on 27th February.

Whether you’ve heard the entire album or simply a stand-alone track, Don Broco have successfully injected the fun back into rock music. Taking themselves with a pinch of salt and genuinely having a good old giggle whilst on stage, the quartet are all about bringing a laugh to their audiences…and this they most certainly do. Ok so let us paint you a pretty little scene…queue introductory opening bars to single ‘Priorities,’ a sliding base line, rhythmically fast pasted sample of music. Queue three band members (the drummer is exempt from this act ) who run on stage and quite literally thrust themselves into the running man. We can’t quite emphasise how much of a shock this was until we saw it live back at Download Festival 2012.

Lead singer, Rob Damiani reveals: ‘Our booking agent books for Bruno Mars and he invited us to come along and watch one of his shows. Anyway we went to see him and we were blown away, the whole band were doing these crazy dance moves and we thought, hey why don’t we do something like that, just a little bit more subtle. When we’d recorded the album, we were listening to Priorities the single which has a bit of groove, bouncy riffs and thought we can exaggerate this by doing the walk.’

2013 holds a terrific year for Don Broco who, since the release of their number 14 debut album in the UK album charts exploded their career, have gone onto sell out their very own headline nationwide tour. Also on the cards for the Broco boys includes a headline slot at this year’s Hit The Deck festival in Nottingham and Bristol towards the end of April along with countless other major festivals we are expecting to be announced in the foreseeable future…keep a beady eye peeled and come down to Sheffield’s Corporation to enjoy one of the highlights of the gig calendar.

What goes into the perfect ingredient to make a world class rock star? Ask Andy Biersack, Black Veil Brides frontman and all around teenage girl crush, who we’re pretty damn sure is followed round by a permanent army of screaming females. Although barely old enough to legally buy himself a pint over in his hometown of Hollywood, the face of one of the biggest rock bands in the world well and truly brought it with his five star show at Sheffield’s sold out 02 Academy. Not even heap loads of snow could keep his fans away…

Opening up the night with enough hairspray to force Elnett into liquidation, Fearless Vampire Killers were all about one thing…getting the crowds nicely heated for the four strong bill of the night. Their performance of Elton John’s “I’m Still Standing” may have been a tad unorthodox however they managed to pull it off with their trademark style and questionable confidence whilst on stage. Second in the firing line, Tonight Alive, one of Australia’s most anticipated pop punk bands. Surprising us all with a set varied of both upbeat verses sober tracks, front woman Jenna McDougall has such a set of pipes on her, we’d be surprised if Tonight Alive weren’t quickly on their very own headline live tour.

Main headline support and easily one of the best vocalists we’ve seen in ages, Chiodos dominated the stage with Craig Owen as their chief puppet master.

Their eight song set may have come as a shock to the more diehard of Black Veil Brides fans, with their progressive hardcore undertones clearly evident throughout Chiodos’s performance, however with tracks “Is It Progression If a Cannibal Uses A fork” and “If I Cut My Hair, Hawaii Will Sink,” it’s easy to see the hype created by this five piece.

Let’s be honest with ourselves now…there is one (five)big fat (skinny) reasons why the vast majority of Sheffield’s teenage population bought tickets to the nights show…Black Veil Brides. Embarking on stage with less clothes than a holiday maker who had his bastard suitcase lost at the airport, tinnitus was on the cards as Andy, Jake, Ashley, Jinx and CC set about their hour long performance. Opening up with smasher “I Am Bulletproof,” we challenge anybody to say they are not a fan of Black Veil Brides after they’ve witnessed one of their full live shows.

Other tracks “Rebel Love Song,” “The Legacy” and “Fallen Angels” followed, all of which sound tracked by marauds of ear splitting screams (whatever you’ve got Andy, bottle it and sell it, you’ll be a billionaire next week guaranteed) closing with their one song encore to “In The End.” Joining in with the last song of the night, Will Francis of William Control got up on stage to tear up the tour (queue raised decibel levels), a poignant end to one hell of a set.

So can you really look us in the eye and tell us you’re not a BVB fan?

By the time you read this, I’ll have been to the Ricoh Show in Coventry for a look around to see what is available on shelves now, and hopefully get a few pointers about new releases coming soon. I do enjoy the shows, there seems to be a real buzz around many of them and everyone I talk too is keen to see the latest new big thing....but are there any more real innovations left in angling or have we now done it all? Since the hair rig, I don’t think there has been that much to hit the market that stands out as special, innovative or that will change my angling in any great way; true, things such as the Spomb will render the spod extinct (it will, believe me, you try a Spomb, there is no going back!) so where do we go from here?

Sometimes I get a snippet of information from trade sources which alert me to things I should get excited about, but so far this year, I’ve heard very little, so the show is likely to be about repackaging old favourites, re-releasing last season’s kit and revamping existing baits to offer ‘new’ products for the retail trade to ensure turnover, agent fees, and stock purchase continues...so who is the real winner?

Huge online stores have really become a market force to be reckoned with over the last couple of years and the high street retailer continues to struggle along with

only excellent customer service saving some going to the wall as anglers seek advice as well as purchases. This means the high street guy has to sell to make profit, secure further stock and obtain new lines to keep the buyer coming back, so there are deals to be had by you every time you walk through the door; he has to sell. The online conglomerate can make huge orders securing mega discounts from manufacturers and have vast amounts of stock in storage ready to meet demand.

Purchase savings can be passed on to the buyer at will, safe in the knowledge that it’s only a matter of time before the tackle shop up the road shuts down due to a difficult trading environment, so again, there are savings to be had online too!

Surely a win/win situation for the angler??

In my humble opinion, I still think the high street is king; high postage costs take the edge off many of the attractive deals on offer, it can be difficult to resolve any issues with missing or broken parts and if it has to be returned, you may be liable for costs....so it’s not all rosy online. A problem with a shop bought item and a it can be simply resolved with a little face to face communication and the onus is then on the retailer to sort..much better if you ask me!

The Ricoh Show will still be fun though, and I’ve no doubt the market will change further throughout 2013 with even more online superstores opening their doors, but for me, the musky smell of maggots and waft of hot coffee as I engage in shop floor banter with staff I’ve bought tackle from for years will win out every time!

This weekend’s action comes from Kempton and Newcastle with six races scheduled to be televised on Channel 4. The feature race is the Racing Plus Chase from Kempton, a 3 mile Grade 3 Handicap that always attracts a decent field. There are a two Grade 2 Hurdles on offer as well, one for juveniles and the other open-age. The supporting meeting is at Newcastle where the marathon Eider Chase is the highlight. This 4 mile+ event, one of the longest in the racing calendar, is going to take some getting in the forecast heavy ground.

Kempton: 2.05 Racing UK Subscribe for Cheltenham Adonis Juvenile Hurdle, Grade 2, 4yo, 2m: Some quite promising types line up for this juvenile contest. All are unexposed to some extent so it can be tricky to predict the winner. Paul Nicholls has two entered, Irish Saint (a course and distance winner) and Lac Fontana, both of whom are interesting and unexposed. Alan King has three entries with course and distance winner L’Unique, who is seeking a hattrick, looking the most interesting. Nicky Henderson has two entries, as does Gary Moore, whose Chris Pea Green is also seeking three in a row. Donald McCain, Tom Vaughan, Mick Channon and Brian Ellison complete the trainers’ array with one entry apiece although Ellison’s Travis County may not run after finishing second at Southwell on Monday.

Nicky Henderson’s Vasco du Ronceray looks to have a decent chance following his creditable third to Kashmir Peak at Doncaster last time. However, I am taking a chance that Tim Vaughan has got Swnymor’s jumping sorted out after his last flight tumble at Chepstow last time out when he looked set to land the Grade 1 Finale Juvenile Hurdle fairly comfortably until that error took its toll.

2.40 Rewards4Racing Handicap Chase, Class 3, 5yo+, 0-130, 2m 4f 110yds: This looks to be a wide open handicap with quite a few young chasers from prominent stables taking each other on. My top few rated on lifetime performance are: Midnight Sail; Mentalist; Milarrow; Plein Pouvoir; and Tafika – although there isn’t an awful lot between most of them on my figures. To narrow it down a little I have concentrated on their last time out ratings and this has thrown up four with good figures from their last runs, These are: Tafika (134); Mentalist (53); Triangular (47); and Plein Pouvoir (35). With a healthy lead on my figures from his last time out winning run Tafika gets the vote.

3.15 William Hill Dovecote Novices’ Hurdle, Grade 2, 4yo+, 2m: This looks a cracking contest on paper with most of the top stables represented. Philip Hobbs’ exciting 2011 Festival Bumper winner Cheltenian makes his long awaited re-appearance after an absence of almost two years – his last run was when winning that race and this is his hat-trick bid. Venetia Williams’ Brick Red is going for a four-timer and Nicky Richards’ Duke of Navan is also seeking a hat-trick of wins. Added to these are some unexposed lightly-raced animals and three debutants over hurdles. Of these others the ones that make my shortlist are: D’Oyly Carte, Fair Trade; Forgotten Voice; Lordofthehouse; Utopian and Valdez. Fair Trade and Lordofthehouse are interesting from their Ascot runs behind Close Touch last November, where they finished second a fourth respectively.

Although I do very much like the credentials of Cheltenian he may just need this after such a long lay-off so the vote goes to Brick Red who has my top rating overall and a good last time out figure from the Musselburgh race where he won quite impressively eventually. He looks to be progressive and can continue on an upward curve.

3.50 Racing Plus Chase (Handicap), Grade 3, 5yo+, 3m: This is always a spectacular race to watch as they go at a good clip on this flat track. Tom George’s Nacarat, who won the race in 2009 and 2011, always seems to run well here and is attempting a third win this year. Last year’s winner Quinz is also in the field where his trainer Philip Hobbs is doubly represented (by Quinz and Duke of Lucca). However Quinz’s last three runs are all pulled-ups so that does not augur well for his chances and I think I prefer those of Duke of Lucca who went quite well in the Hennessy last time before fading into eleventh.

Mister Hyde also has a course and distance victory on his CV while Summery Justice has won over 2m 5f at the course and over the distance elsewhere.

Paul Nicholls sets a poser by entering three with the hat-trick seeking Rolling Aces (Ruby Walsh) seeming to be his number one hope based on jockey arrangements. The other two are What A Friend and Join Together both of whom have decent chances based on my ratings. Wyck Hill is also chasing his hat-trick here and could be dangerous to dismiss, as could Same Difference from the Nigel TwistonDavies outfit. After quite some deliberation I am taking a chance on What A Friend who carries my top rating, has a decent last time out figure and has the valuable 5lb claim of Harry Derham’s allowance to reduce the burden of top weight. Next best could

be Duke of Lucca from last year’s winning stable.

Newcastle: 2.20 Betfred Mobile Lotto Handicap Hurdle, Class 2, 4yo+, 0-145, 2m: Twelve of the nineteen entered here did good speed ratings last time out which makes this a very difficult one to call. However, I am taking a chance on David Pipe’s The Tracey Shuffle who reverts to hurdles after a spell chasing, has a course win to his name and handles heavy ground. Posh Bird is lightly weighted and could perhaps provide the biggest threat although Meetings Man is another to have run well last time. Of the others respect is accorded to four-timer seeking Robbie, Harvey’s Hope, Rocky Wednesday and Crowning Jewel.

2.55 Betfred Eider (Handicap Chase), Class 2, 5yo+, 0-150, 4m 1f: If Master Overseer runs the others will carry fairly light weights for this extreme stamina test in heavy ground. All the last time out winners in the field are respected, particularly Cool Operator who is seeking a hat-trick and Chac du Cadran who recorded a decent speed figure over 3m 6f at Catterick last time where he made all and stayed on well to draw clear at the end of the race, beating Desperate Dex by 8 lengths. On a line through Desperate Dex Chac du Cadran should have the beating of Master Overseer on these terms and Desperate Dex, who re-opposes, should not be able to turn round the eight length Catterick defeat. However, another lightly weighted individual who ran well last time out is Our Island, whose fifth to Monbeg Dude in the Welsh National reads well in the context of this contest. From that race, on a line through Mon Mome, he should have the beating of Master Overseer, Desperate Dex and Chac du Cadran and therefore gets the nod.

DeCaro had a double shut out in the wins over Fife (3-0) and Hull (4-0) and has only conceded one goal in the last 3 games "Johnny is in a great run of form right now" said Finnerty "we need that to continue this weekend with the three games in three nights" Steelers moved into second place in the Elite League standings with their 4 point weekend just 3 points behind league leaders Nottingham.

Finnerty's side take on the Panthers on Friday evening before flying to Belfast (Saturday) and Dundee (Sunday) for the most difficult series of games "three games in three nights in three Countries" said Finnerty "It's what you have to do if you want to win a championship. We can't do anything about the schedule we just have to concentrate on the three games, whats that old cliché - "one game at a time' I guess that’s what we will do "It's pointless worrying about Belfast and Dundee until after we have played Nottingham. MILLERS VICTORIOUS IN LOCAL DERBY ROTHERHAM UNITED’s automatic promotion hopes were given a boost as they put local rivals Chesterfield to the sword thanks to Johnny Mullins’ second-half header.

The visitors’ had the first sight of goal when Lester picked up the loose ball on halfway and with home defenders backtracking, he fired a skimming drive which forced Andy Warrington into a smart save.

From the resultant punt upfield by the home ‘keeper, the ball fell kindly for Daniel Nardiello, who danced around Liam Cooper with a minimum of fuss before firing a low drive which beat the outstretched hand of Tommy Lee but agonisingly smacked against the outside of the post.

Moments later, a ball into the channel found Alex Revell in space who fizzed a first-time cross which narrowly evaded the outstretched foot of Nardiello, as he had ghosted behind the last line of defence.

The Millers were looking the most likely and following good work by Kari Arnason, Daniel Kearns fired a stinging effort from distance which deflected off Neal Trotman before looping narrowly over the bar.

At the other end, Warrington showed great reflexes to snuff out the danger as Drew Talbot’s dangerous centre struck Claude Davis before falling in the grateful hands of the Rotherham stopper on his own line.

The home side had faint appeals for a spot kick as Trotman get himself in an awkward position in his own box but the referee waved away home shouts before Noble’s curling free-kick from just outside the box stung the palms of Lee moments later.

The Millers then launched a quick counter attack as Nardiello beat the offside trap and his first time cross found Kearns, whose pull back saw Noble strike goalwards but his effort was deflected wide by a retreating defender.

Just shy of the half-hour, Cooper’s arrowed free-kick was misjudged by a home defender and Richards controlled smartly before firing an effort with the outside of his right foot but to Rotherham’s relief his effort failed to trouble Warrington as it struck the side netting.

At the other end, Noble’s floated set-piece was met by the head of Davis, but his downward header lacked power as it was comfortably gathered by Lee. Minutes later, Warrington’s clearance was flicked on

by Revell into the path of Nardiello, whose first time effort had Lee scrambling across his line to parry the ball to safety.

Cooper then saw yellow for clipping Revell as he looked to strike goalwards from the edge of the box but Rotherham failed to make them pay as Noble’s resultant free-kick was blocked.

County Senior League Premier Division Houghton Main retained their two point lead at the top of the Premier Division, with a 1-0 away win over Kinsley Boys. Luke Sykes scored the only to give the leaders a narrow win.

Carl Fothergill fired a hat-trick for second placed Shaw Lane Aqua Force Barnsley to help keep the pressure on Houghton Main. Aqua Force took the points comfortably with a 5-1 away win over Wombwell Main. They remain two points off the lead, with spare game.

Penistone Church sit three points off the lead, following the 3-0 defeat of Davy FC. Alvin Riley (2) and Mark Crossfield scored the goals for Penistone.

Millmoor Juniors made it six straight league wins, with a 2-1 away win over Ecclesfield Red Rose. Liam Royles and Lee Jordan scored the goals for the in-form Millmoor.

Adam Todd fired a hat-trick for Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves to give them a 3-0 win over Swallownest Miners Welfare. Swallownest had won their three previous league games.

Daniel Bainbridge scored twice for Frecheville to heap the woe on bottom-side South Kirkby Colliery. Frecheville won the game 2-1, as they recorded back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

High Green Villa ended a run of four straight league losses, with a 2-1 home win over Everest. The win is High Green’s first in the league since 10th November.

Division One

With Rotherham in the ascendancy, Noble’s clipped cross saw Revell strike a sweet shot which was deflected wide.

by Lee. Following good work by Kearns on the left flank, Liam Ridehalgh swung a tantalising centre which picked out the unmarked Nardiello, but he blazed his header over from eight yards.

The Millers were finally rewarded for their pressure with the breakthrough on 58 minutes thanks to their skipper Mullins.

Following a period of pressure, Noble floated a delightful corner which saw the ex-Stockport County defender bulldoze his way through a ruck of bodies to meet his centre to power an unstoppable header into the heart of the goal from point-blank range giving Lee no chance.

The visitors responded immediately and Sam Togwell dragged a shot wide following Lester’s layoff before Richards blasted over from an acute angle.

With fifteen minutes to go, Revell’s superb flickon released Nardiello, who teased and tormented Trotman before dragging a shot narrowly wide of the target.

Lee Freckington then saw yellow for tripping Armaud Gnanduillet in full flight but on a more positive note seconds later he forced Lee into a smart save following a stinging drive.

The visitors momentarily thought they were on level terms with five minutes to go when an arrowed ball saw Gnanduillet knock the ball down into the path of the on-rushing Togwell, who calmly slid the ball past Warrington but his joy was curtailed by the offside flag.

With time running out, Arnason fizzed a freekick narrowly over the bar from distance before Chesterfield came within a whisker of the equaliser when Talbot’s glancing header from Conor Townsend’s inswinging free-kick shaved the outside of the post to the relief of the vast majority of the New York Stadium.

In the last play of the game, Townsend’s corner saw Gnanduillet climb highest but his header screwed well wide of the target.

Oughtibridge WMSC cut Athersley’s lead at the summit of the First Division to just four points, following the 4-0 defeat of Wickersley. Oughtibridge also have three game in-hand of the leaders.

Swinton Athletic edged-out Hallam Reserves 5-3 in a thriller at Swinton Miners Welfare. Swinton have now won three of their last four league games, and sit in third place.

Penistone Church Reserves registered a 3-0 away win over Sheffield Athletic. Tim Council, Peter Hobson and Florent Fadiga were all on target in an excellent win.

Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves climbed out of the bottom three, with a 2-0 away win over Caribbean Sports.

Sheffield Bankers were big 5-0 winners over Thorncliffe at Davy Sports Club. Joe Jerrison (2), Mike Russell, Sami Eric and Dave Gardner grabbed the goals for the Bankers.

Joe Hall and James Mason were on the score-sheet for Thorpe Hesley, as they beat Bramley Sunnyside Juniors at Rockingham Community Centre. That is back-to-back losses in the League for Bramley for the first time since early-September.

Division Two Jubilee Sports continued their good form, with a comfortable 5-0 win over Kingstone United. Matthew Turner, Ben Doane, Lee Grocock, Gary Cooper and Jordan Livett got the goals to fire Jubilee to the summit of the Second Division on goal difference.

Naz Koriba and Josh Darlington notched braces for New Bohemians, as they defeated high-flying AFC Dronfield Woodhouse at Boundary Sports Club. It is back-to-back losses for Dronfield Woodhouse, who fall from second place to fifth.

ROVERS RETURN TO SECOND AFTER CRAWLY DRAW A fine day brought a fine evening, albeit a cold one, for the live showing of the match at Crawley Town on Sky Sports Television.

The Rovers starting line-up showed two changes, Lee Fowler coming in for Martin Woods, who drops to the bench and James Harper replacing Andy Griffin, injured. The home team made just one change following their loss at Scunthorpe United, Dannie Bulman replacing Mike Jones, who drops to the bench. Ex-Rovers full back Mustapha Dumbuya starts against his old club. The Rovers defended the North Stand where their supporters were housed.

The home team set the ball rolling leaving the teams to sound each other out in the early minutes. In the 4th minute the home team won a corner but nothing came from it. General midfield play ensued over the next ten minutes as each side sought to get on top. Then a spate of free kicks for both sides either side of the quarter hour brought no rewards. In the 23rd minute, Crawley attacked down their right, with Proctor and Clarke playing 1-2s to give Clarke a shot at goal but he fired wide of the far post. However, two minutes later, the 25th minute, and following a Rovers attack that broke down, Adams, for the home team got away down their left. A pass inside led to a shot that was kicked away by Rob Jones at full stretch, with the ball going to SIMPSON, who rocketed his shot into the net from 25yards.

The Rovers almost hit back two minutes later Cotterill and Coppinger linked up on the right, with Coppinger getting in a strike from inside the angle of the penalty area that struck the outside of the far post. Past the half hour and following a corner on the Crawley right, played to Simpson on the edge of the area but he tamely put wide. Although the Rovers were playing well enough they hadn’t troubled Paul Jones in the Crawley goal up to the 40minute mark. Then Simpson received an injury and was replaced by Torres. In the 43rd minute came an equaliser for the Rovers when a great cross from Cotterill, on the right, to the far post was met by a diving header from HUSBAND into the net.

The opening ten minutes was pretty scrappy stuff, with neither side settling on the ball.

Then, in the 57th minute, Torres ended a Crawley attack by shooting high over the bar.

Past the hour and Dumbuya robbed Husband halfway in the Rovers half on the Crawley right, took the ball to the byline before shooting for the near post but Woods caught the ball well. In the 65th minute, Dumbuya crossed from the Crawley right to the far post where Proctor put wide. The Rovers were on the rack at this time but they withstood their 2-1 home win over Kiveton Park Reserves. Michael Clarke and Josh Foster scored the goals for the hosts.

Hare & Hounds MFC followed up last weeks’ 5-1 away win over Sheffield Lane Top, with a 7-1 away win over struggling Frecheville Reserves. Hare & Hounds climb to third with the win.

Meadowhall League S&HCFA Senior Cup Quarter Final Hackenthorpe A were unlucky in the S&HCFA were unlucky against Athersley Recreation. They held Athersley to a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes, but were beaten 5-4 on penalties.

League Cup 3rd Round 21 year old Jordan Livett was the star on show at Chaucer Sports Centre. He scored four goals for Wadsley Bridge WMC, as they beat Throstles U21’s 5-2 to progress to the Quarter Final stage.

Arbourthorne EA took the scalp of Premier Division Royal Earl for the second time in three weeks. They beat them 2-1 in Senior Cup at Warminster Road. This time it was exactly the same, as they won 2-1 in the League Cup. Arbourthorne have had an excellent season thus far, and remain undefeated in all competitions.

Premier Division Brunsmeer Abbey AJW claimed the result of the day, as they beat Premier Division leaders Crookes 4-0 at Warminster Road. The loss for Crookes ends a run of five straight league wins for them.

Handsworth Turf Tavern took advantage of Crookes’ slip to close the gap at the top of the division to just a single point.

A Paul Turner hat-trick helped Handsworth to a 6-0 win over Packhorse Inn at Thorncliffe Playing Fields.

Michael Kay and Danny Milner were both on target for Greenhill White Hart, as they beat Sharrow United 2-0 at

everything thrown at them including three corners and some good footwork by Clarke, which took him into the penalty area on the right but his left footed effort went wide of the far post. The last ten minutes came up, with the referee’s book coming out of his pocket at regular intervals. In the 85th minute Clarke again cut in from the right but his left foot shot again flashed well past the far post.

Then, as four minutes of added time came up, the Rovers moved forward in an attempt to snatch the other two points. A free kick just outside the penalty area from Cotterill was put out for a corner, which was headed around in the area before being cleared. Another corner to the Rovers saw Jones penalised for a foul.

The Rovers kept the game in the opposition half and when the referee’s whistle went they celebrated the winning of a hard earned point.

However, Winn Gardens remain top by two points, but have player six games more than second placed Arbourthorne EA. Penistone Church were in fine striking form as they beat HSBC 6-1 at the Memorial Ground. Tom Eaton scored a hat-trick and Tim Council registered a brace for the hosts.

Penistone Church are now five games unbeaten.

Karl Fox scored a hat-trick for Jack-in-a-Box, as they beat Ridgeway Athletic 7-0 away from home. Jack-in-a-Box have won their last three league games.

Division Two Mitch Savage scored four goals for Hurlfield to inspire them to a 7-1 away win over SWD. The win takes Hurlfield within three points of leaders City Taxis (Stradbroke) with a game spare.

U21 Division Swinton Spartans U21’s edged out Greasborough U21’s 5-4 in a thriller at Swinton Comprehensive School. The win takes Swinton into a comfortable mid-table position.

Hollinsend U21’s recorded back-to-back wins for the first time this season, with an impressive 7-0 away win over Crosspool Juniors U21’s.

Sharrow United U21’s heaped more woe on struggling Swallownest, by defeating them 4-0 at Burgoyne Park.

Goals from Barry Robson, Kevin McDonald and Dave Kitson helped the Blades make it three wins on the bounce and also arrest the string of home defeats.

Robson netted his first in a Blades shirt from the penalty spot after he was fouled

by Colchester captain Josh Thompson.

Kevin McDonald added the second, his first of the campaign, with a well-placed effort after the break in a game where Dominic Poleon, on loan from Leeds, made his debut and Diego De Girolamo came on for his league bow, setting up Dave Kitson’s late tap in.

Robson made his first start for the Blades, replacing Forte, who failed to overcome a problem he picked up in midweek. New signing Poleon, whose loan capture from Leeds was completed before kick-off, took Robson’s place on the bench.

It was quickly clear that the make up of United’s offensive line had altered to accommodate the change in personnel - Murphy switched to a central role alongside Kitson, with Robson and Flynn supporting from the flanks and the latterly named duo did not take long to make an impact.

Little more than three minutes had elapsed when Flynn wriggled free down the left and delivered a low cross which Robson connected with just before being felled by Thompson. Referee Webb immediately pointed to the spot and newboy ROBSON took responsibility, drilling home the penalty. Colchester skipper Thompson, who gave away the penalty, sailed close to the wind on nine minutes when he challenged Murphy in the box, but this time the referee awarded a corner.

A neat move involving McMahon, Flynn, McDonald and Robson failed to create a chance but earned a round of applause from the crowd, whilst Colchester won a couple of free-kicks in decent positions and Thompson, Sears and Wright all failed to find the target with half-chances.

As well as being first scorer, Robson picked up the game’s first booking, for a foul on Porter, before both goalkeepers were called into action in the space of a matter of moments. Firstly, Walker did well to hold a half-volley from Doyle and then Long managed to usher away a shot from Sears, which bounced just in front of him.

The Lane crowd were again apprecia-

tive when the Blades went close twice in the space of a couple of minutes, Firstly, Murphy’s shot from the left channel was collected at the second attempt by goalkeeper Walker, who needed to be alert to drop on Kitson’s intelligent flick from McDonald’s cross.

Before the interval, Colchester could count themselves very fortunate not to be two or even three behind. On 44 minutes, Kitson headed home Robson’s right-wing cross but was adjudged offside and then, in injury-time, after McDonald’s enterprising run, Doyle smashed an unstoppable shot from 25 yards against a post.

In a quiet start to the second half both Flynn and Murphy had efforts blocked but the visitors caused one or two problems and Clifford fired over.

The second period was just 13 minutes old when Poleon was introduced, to replace Robson. The new boy headed for a central role with Murphy switching to a wide position.

McMahon was booked for a foul on Porter and as United failed to produce the rhythm of the first half, Higginbotham’s poked clearance was only a foot wide of Long’s goal.

However, it was the assistance of the Colchester defence that the Blades doubled the lead on 73 minutes. A stray pass landed at the feet of McDONALD 30 yards out and the midfielder advanced towards the edge of the box before slotting into the bottom corner of Walker’s net.

As the game entered the final ten minutes, both Doyle and McMahon won tackles to set up a chance for Kitson, whose effort was blocked by Walker’s legs. Higginbotham was the next to be denied by the goalkeeper, the left-back’s curling effort pushed into the path of Flynn, who failed to take advantage.

The fourth official added four minutes after the allotted 90 and there was still time for more action and another goal.

Deep into the extra period, McMahon chased down the right flank and pulled the ball back for De Girolamo - on moments earlier for Flynn - whose shot was blocked by Walker, but fell invitingly for KITSON to tap in from a yard.

Danny Wilson was delighted to complete a perfect week of results, after the Blades beat Colchester United 3-0 at Bramall Lane on Saturday.

The Blades boss spoke pre-match about the importance of returning to winning ways at home after consecutive away victories at Shrewsbury and Bury respectively and goals from Barry Robson, Kevin McDonald and Dave Kitson saw United win for the first time in four matches at the Lane.

Wilson commented: “The scoreline would suggest this was a great result, but we have produced more emphatic performances this season without winning games so convincingly.

“Over the last week we have come through three very tough games where the lads have had to call on all their desire, determination and commitment to the cause.

“We must commend the players on their fitness to perform as they have done in the last three matches.

“We were determined to get a much needed home win and to score three goals for our own fans was terrific.

“The lads have been told to believe in themselves. We have retained that self belief when things were going against us and we always knew our luck would change.

“It wasn’t as though there was a great deal wrong, it was a case of fine tuning and that is what we have done in the last seven days or so.”

The win lifted United back up into second and with results over the weekend going in the Blades favour, Wilson is confident the Blades can handle pressure as the race for promotion hots up.

He added: “We have know for a while that we need to go the distance, I just feel some of our rivals are struggling to handle the pressure, but we have had it to contend with since the day I arrived.

“We handle and embrace the expectation level and we are seeing the results going our way at present.”

BLADES BOUNCING BACK FANʼS COLUMN

February has traditionally been a terrible month for Sheffield United regardless of how the remainder of the season has unfolded. But this season it seems that January has proved to be a dark month for the Blades and Mr. Wilson is getting it right in the second month of 2013. However United should be fortunate that despite not winning since Boxing Day and losing three home matches on the spin they never lost too much ground on their rivals.

Yet surprisingly you have to go all the way back to 24 November since an away league fixture ended in defeat, that was at Brentford and we spin back to end of January where despite defeats were only eight points from automatic spots and now following three epic wins over Shrewsbury (2-1), Bury (2-0) and Colchester United (3-0) are breathing down Bournemouth’s neck with a game in hand.

Of course points on the board are better but the Carwley game was postponed at the right time when United were out of form, they face Bournemouth on Saturday where a draw wouldn’t be so bad. I’ve never been one to lose faith in ‘our Danny’ and am confident that he will mark a memorable season with promotion; more fans just need to believe! Up the Blades.

Taking place today (Monday) and Wednesday, the purpose of the event this week is twofold.

For age groups 9-11, the schoolboys will be undergoing a series of training exercises which will see the youngsters put through their paces with passing drills, possession work and conditioning.

A qualified coach of the SWFC academy has been assigned to each age group (9s11s) and the goalkeepers, who are split into a separate category of their own.

Alongside that, the academy scouts will also be assessing the budding young talent in the area in two separate tournaments which will be contested by

local sides in a recruitment drive.

The first tournament, which will take place this morning, will see the Under-6 age group in action across three mini pitches at Hillsborough College.

The second tournament takes place on Wednesday for the Under-7s and will take the same format as the Under-6 tournament, with half of the pitch split into three mini pitches.

Foundation Head Coach Matt Burton said: “The staff and I are really looking to both days.

“The tournaments will provide us with a perfect opportunity to identify the best young talent in the area and getting access to our registered players throughout the day means they will have increased training time which can only benefit them in their quest to develop as elite footballers at SWFC.” Academy manager Dean Ramsdale said: “Events such as these are excellent to look at talent within the local area and give players the opportunity to play in competitive games in a safe environment.

“Hopefully we will find players that can become part of our academy as well as becoming Owls for life.”

Owls midfielder Paul Corry has joined League 1 promotion-chasers Tranmere Rovers on an initial 28-day loan deal.

Corry joined Wednesday in the summer of 2012 from University College Dublin in his homeland of Ireland.

The midfielder has since made eight senior appearances for the Owls.

The 22-year-old is eligible to feature in Tranmere’s live televised clash against Shrewsbury this evening in League 1.

The weekend off gave us all time to take stock and get our bearings before a highly gristly March that crescendos with a home tie against our brethren from Barnsley.

But to look to the future we need to learn from the past so let’s take a look at the Derby game.

Derby out hustled, bustled, tussled and rustled us in the first half. Nigel Clough obviously sent out his side to press from all quarters and they did that splendidly. The visitors made it difficult for our midfield to get any kind of grip on the game which was compounded by the Owls’ persistence in conceding possession at every turn.

Derby didn’t really out play us in the first half but their pressure and high line of defence ultimately got them a deserved lead although it was a soft goal to concede.

It got softer after the break as before Wednesday could stage a second half response Llera conceding a penalty that the word ‘stonewall’ was invented for.

It didn’t look good and maybe a few months ago the game would’ve been lost but after two goals from an aggregate distance of eighteen inches we ended up looking like nicking a winner but to be fair, that would’ve been slightly harsh on Derby.

The form of our relegation threatened rivals has been staggering. I said a few weeks ago that there are usually one or two teams that pull away from danger with one or two falling close to the League One precipice. However, those numbers can be doubled at this moment in time as the likes of Bolton, Wolves and Birmingham have been introduced to the battle to avoid the third tier for the first time in a long time and Barnsley, Bristol City and Peterborough have really kicked on.

With a six-pointer in the Second City already decided at the time of going to print the run-in is here and with it the now familiar sense of anticipation and indeed, trepidation.

Would I swap these six-pointers and the accompanying excitement and trauma they bring for a steady mid-table berth?

Absolutely. But that’s the easy way out and Wednesday very rarely take that route do they?
