CAMPAIGN AGAINST ALCOHOL PRICE HIKE This month the Government will begin reviewing formal responses to their 10 week Alcohol Strategy Consultation, which proposes an alcohol price hike and a ban on multi-buy promotions in shops and offlicences. The Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) has launched a campaign via www. whyshouldwepaymore. co.uk encouraging the public to speak out against the price hikes that they believe will punish the vast majority of responsible drinkers and won’t address the real causes of alcohol misuse.
New polling by ComRes on behalf of the campaign reveals that those in Yorkshire and Humberside do not believe that the proposed price hikes will be effective. The research showed that: · 68% believe that the Government’s plans to increase the price of alcohol will not reduce alcohol-related antisocial behaviour · Fewer than one in four overall (15%) support minimum unit pricing · 52% of the population claim they would feel angry at being punished for others’ irresponsible drinking · 87% of people believe that binge drinking will
continue irrespective of the plans to set higher alcohol prices · 61% believe people would take more ‘party drugs’ instead of drinking alcohol if minimum pricing was introduced The proposed 45p minimum unit price will, according to the Government’s own figures, cost consumers in England and Wales more than £1 billion pounds extra per year[1]. Research from the Centre for Economics and Business Research also shows that it will hit the poorest hardest – with the lowest 30% of earners bearing the brunt.
Miles Beale, Chief Executive of the WSTA, said: “Our campaign website www. whyshouldwepaymore. co.uk allows the public to get in touch with their local MP, through email or Twitter, to learn more and voice their opposition to minimum unit pricing. They can also sign an online petition and calculate the costs of the policy on their shopping baskets.” “Evidence shows that there is no simple link between alcohol price and harm and we do not believe that increasing the price of alcohol will effectively tackle problem drinking. The
polling out today shows that less than one in four people in Yorkshire and Humberside region support minimum unit pricing, while just over two in three people think it won’t change drink-related anti-social behaviour and almost nine in ten say it won’t stop binge drinking.” “The UK already has some of the highest alcohol prices in Europe, and given that alcohol consumption has fallen by 13% since 2004, these radical plans to increase the price of alcohol seem completely unfair, untargeted and ineffective.”

Copley’s Column
I have always been a great believer in justice, although that belief was severely tested during ten years of fighting for my children in the family court, However, in hindsight, I do realise that judges can only pass judgement on the evidence presented to them. Regrettably, my case was lost due to the total ineptitude of social services that preferred to accept a pack of lies, rather than the truth. Of course, being of the male gender immediately put me behind the eight ball, and they were probably the reason for the formation of ‘Fathers for Justice’ My next reason for doubts setting in occurred when top American football star, O.J. Simpson overcame unbelievable evidence against him, some allegedly fabricated to obtain a not guilty verdict on charges of murdering his wife and her male friend, Ronald Goldman. Simpson was however later convicted of these murders in the civil court, and is now incarcerated, probably for the rest of his life on other serious charges. How, I ask, did he get the not guilty verdict, after a lengthy trial, (I watched every minute of it) and it never looked in his favour? I have a theory about this, which concerns a certain Mr. Rodney King, whereby it was captured on film where he was dragged from his car by a number of Los Angeles police officers for allegedly drink driving, and severely beaten with riot sticks. Rodney King, needless to say was black, and the incident provoked outrage from all sectors of the community, particularly when no disciplinary action was taken against them. I firmly believe that the O.J.Simpson verdict was a statement made against the Los Angeles police force. A further reason being it being believed that one of the officers, Thurman, a man known to have made racist comments in the past planted the blood-stained glove at Simpson’s house, unfortunately for the prosecution, a glove three

sizes too small which could not possibly have been worn by the accused. There is definitely a hint of racism involved. Talking of justice or lack of it, and racism leads me into the unbelievable case of top athlete, Oscar Pistorius, probably the only man in history to get bail while on a murder charge. I cannot begin to understand why this happened, although I suspect that it is a public statement from a country that historically has been very anti-black, that white men are good guys who can be trusted, particularly national heroes. A black man on the same charges would have had his application turned down in a matter of minutes, yet the case involving Pistorius went on for days. And the magistrate, apart from impounding his passport and asking him to report to the police twice a week, has turned him loose to do whatever he wants. Thankfully, celebrity status and racism play no part in the British legal system. My girlfriend and I visited a pub in Chesterfield on Saturday night to see local band, The Score, who, as a result of much hard work, have come on leaps and bounds since we last saw them. They entertained a full house, and a guest appearance from top mandolin player, and extremely nice guy, Colin Sawford, was excellent. I have, in fairness, deliberately not named the pub, which was being well run until a brawl, involving about ten customers, broke out, knocking our table over and spilling our drinks. The management and staff handled the situation brilliantly, ejecting those responsible in quick time. This did, however, spoil a good night. Saturday was a great day for football in Sheffield, with the Blades winning and going top of the table, and Dave Jones, manager of the Owls, repeating last season’s great run with a victory against high flyers, Crystal Palace, making the possibility of local derbies next season a reality.

Atlantic recording artist Bruno Mars has unveiled details of his hugely anticipated world tour. Stopping off at the Motorpoint Arena on Saturday 12th October, Sheffield is one of only 4 UK dates announced. Tickets for Bruno’s Sheffield debut go on general sale at 9am on Friday 1st March. The announcement of “The Moonshine Jungle World Tour” comes just as “When I Was Your Man” – the latest single from Mars’ just-released sophomore album, “UNORTHODOX JUKEBOX” – has exploded into the top 10 on Billboard’s “Hot 100” where it joins the album’s blockbuster first single, “Locked Out Of Heaven,” which recently spent six consecutive weeks atop the “Hot 100” chart. Bruno Mars is undoubtedly among contemporary pop’s most gifted and compelling artists. And with global sales currently certified at 40x-platinum and over 50 million singles sold worldwide, the 14-time Grammy Award nominee has fully proven himself as a true superstar. Tickets for Bruno Mars at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield go on general sale at 9am on Friday 1st March, in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www. motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk
MULTI-MILLION ECONOMIC IMPACT REVEALED Sheffield’s premier entertainment venue brings more than £20 million a year into the city economy, according to new figures revealed this week. New independent research carried out on behalf of Sheffield International Venues (SIV) shows that annual expenditure in the city as a result of worldclass music, comedy and sporting events held at the award-winning venue totals a staggering £20.8 million per annum. Events staged at the venue, which has played host to concerts and shows from some of the biggest music and comedy stars in the world, from Robbie Williams and Rihanna to Lee Evans and Peter Kay, have huge benefits to the region’s economy. The contribution of the Arena and its events to the local economy considers three factors – people who are employed directly by the Arena and the gross value added (GVA) it supports, income and employment generated from companies which supply goods and services to the Arena, and the associated GVA. Finally, it takes into account employment and the GVA supported by the spend of those directly and indirectly employed by the Arena. Ian Slater chair of Hospitality Sheffield and general manager at the Park Inn said ‘the Motorpoint Arena has a significant impact on hotel occupancy. The venue provides an increased choice and availability of events in Sheffield and increases both the national and international profile of the city. The increased expenditure in Sheffield from visitors and participants alike has also shown to create employment opportunities within the city. In total, the venue supports 475 jobs, with a GVA to the local economy of £13.2 million. The figures also show that the venue, which holds more than 100 events per year ranging from concerts, sporting events, comedy and family shows to exhibitions and conferences, attracts its largest audiences for standing concerts and major sporting events from Yorkshire and Humber region, and that East Midlands, West Yorkshire and the North West are also main sources of spectators. For all other events, South Yorkshire made up the main percentage of the audience, whilst areas including East Riding of Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire, Kingston Upon Hull, North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, York and North East Lincolnshire were also key. Steve Brailey, chief executive SIV said: “One of SIV’s key objectives is to maximise the economic impact of the Sheffield City Region and these latest figures from the Arena show that we are achieving exactly that. “Bringing money into the city through development of the venue, events and employment opportunities has not only contributed to the regeneration of the Don Valley area itself, but has continued to help put the Sheffield City Region on the world map and highlights the venue’s position as the region’s premier entertainment venues.” The figures follow the announcement of a multimillion pound investment programme for the awardwinning indoor entertainment venue. The first stage already underway with the Arena getting a new roof for the first time since it opened in May 1991. The main focus of the second stage of the investment, which will get underway later this year, will see the removal of all the venues 12,500 seats to be replaced with more modern and comfortable seating. There will also be new energy efficient lighting and the replacement of all the external concourse doors Steve added: “With the investment set to enhance customer experience and help us continue to attract the biggest names in the entertainment industry to the venue, we hope to see a further boost to our economy as a direct result of the plans we have in place.” For the latest line up of events at the Arena visit www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis
Meditation Meditation plays a large part in my life. I find that meditation is most beneficial when used to calm the mind, particularly just before a daunting task that requires inner strength. It can also be used to optimise intuition and give clarity of thought, skills that are very important in spirituality. Meditation is used in many walks of life, for instance, Wiccans use meditation for a number of purposes from raising energy to conducting rituals. The best known spiritual pathways that value meditation are: Hinduism Hinduism has approximately six schools of Yoga, incorporating meditation as a core practice. Buddhism Meditation is central to all forms of Buddhism. Their meditation consists of posture and chants. Christianity The use of prayer, the Rosary and Adoration are all forms of meditation. Judaism There are two words that come from the Old Testament. They are ‘Haga’ which means ‘to meditate’ and ‘Siha’ meaning ‘to muse or rehearse in ones mind.’ Islam Mohammed spent long periods in meditation and this practice is fundamental to the mystical side of Islam (Sufism). Taoism/Daoism Taoism uses ‘meditation in motion’ in the form of Tai-Chi. Where should I meditate? Do not attempt to meditate in a noisy, cluttered environment. Try and keep the environment as calm as possible. Lighting incense (Lavender or White Musk) and candles will help to create a relaxing atmosphere. Beginning your meditation Lie on your back, arms by your side and palms facing upwards, breathing gently but deeply.
Systematically work through your body, imagining that golden light fills every crevice. Ask the angels/your spirit guide to come forward and protect you. Now you are ready to open your Chakras so spirit messages can be delivered. The Chakras are energy centers in our body. I use the crystal method to open my Chakras and allow energy to flow. For example, the first Chakra is located at the base area near your coccyx. I imagine a red Garnet crystal growing larger as it opens the Base Chakra. Here are the remaining Chakras and my choice of crystal: Solar Plexus Chakra - Yellow Citrine (Confidence Crystal) Heart Chakra - Pink Rose Quartz or Green Aventurine (Love and Healing) Throat Chakra - Blue Lace Agate (Communication) Third Eye Chakra - Lapis Luzuli (Clear Vision) Crown Chakra - Clear Quartz or Purple Amethyst (Guidance Stone) The next step is to imagine that you are walking towards a bridge. What do you see? What do you hear? Take note of these signs. As you approach the bridge does a figure greet you? This figure could be your spirit guide. If you are wanting a message from the spirit world then now is the time to ask, if not just enjoy the experience of meditation. In order to finish meditating it is essential to close your Chakras. Breathing slowly and deeply, with the flat of your hand, hover over each individual Chakra and imagine it closing. Stretch to return to your normal state and thank angels/your guide for their help. You can now analyse your experience. There are many different kinds of meditation but one of my favourite is Tony Stockwell’s CD ‘Walking with Angels.’ The more you meditate the more experienced you will become and the happier you will be. Food Review: Bragazzis 220 Abbeydale Road, Sheffield S7 Laura from meanmuncher.blogspot.com Bragazzis, a popular and independent little café-cum-deli, is located on Abbeydale Road, Sheffield’s very own up-and-coming ‘in vogue’ area. Some may say that the London Road stretch is the Sheffield equivalent of Dalston, despite the fact that Dalstonites are currently amidst an identity crisis after Harry Styles was spotted in the area, thereby instantly transforming the neighbourhood from one of unwashed hair and laddered tights to clean-living, bubblegum pop and colossal, veneered smiles. Barring any appearances from One Direction, Bragazzis retains its cool and serves very nice food and coffee too. The mouth-watering sandwiches – made with thicker-than-aChinese-phonebook bread - served heated or cold, your choice (£3.85) and selection of freshly-made, routinely innovative cakes (£2.50) are certainly the highlights. With fillings and flavours varying each day, you’ll have to frequent the place more habitually than Katie Price swings by the OK! Magazine HQ before you need have the same one twice. To describe the food adequately, I feel that it is necessary to call in the help of pretend-Dr Gillian McKeith and her silly adage “you are what you eat”. When in Bragazzis, I am a beautiful Italian supermodel, dressed from head-to-toe in the best quality designer clothing. I am deep, complex and memorable for all the right reasons and I’m the kind of woman that Berlusconi wishes he could go out with but I certainly wouldn’t waste my time on him. And so, there is a reason why McKeith is as qualified as Homer Simpson to dole out advice about food. As I sit here, a mundane, quarter-Pole and non-model from Rotherham, I can begin to see why. This takes nothing away from the food though. I had a large Americano (£2.10) and my
date had a small mocha (£2). Bragazzis have developed their own blend of coffee, which you can buy from the deli department, if you so choose (£4.50). Also available at the deli is a selection of anti pasti: grilled artichokes, plump marinated olives (both £2.20 per 100g) and three types of thick, authentic pesto (£2.75 per 100g). The piles of sandwiches, stacks of jars and abundance of produce provide the perfect example of “good clutter” and if I had known about Bragazzis a few years ago as a teenager, I would have taken my parents there to show them how stylish organised-disorganisation can look. The tables and chairs are delightfully mismatched, presumably having been sourced from jumble sales and generous grandmas alike. You don’t pay your bill until you’re ready to leave and instead of being presented with an itemised list, you simply cobble together what you’ve consumed with the help of the person that served you. The day’s selection of cakes will be scrawled across the blackboard in the corner and there isn’t an American soft-drink in sight. This is the kind of place that the big corporate coffee bores wish they were; they will try desperately to imitate such panache and they will inevitably fail. So make sure you enjoy the perfect antidote to all those cardboard cakes, flat-pack interiors and seasonally-coloured cups and give this joint a whirl.

NEWS & INFORMATION
SENIOR CITIZENS DRIVE SAFE COURSE Susan and Murray Wilson, Sheffield 50+ members
We read about this course for the over 60s, being held in Rotherham on this page in the Mercury - made contact and attended the one held in November 2012. The course is designed to bring older drivers’ knowledge up to date and enable them to continue driving for longer, maintaining mobility and independence. There may be many like us, who passed our driving tests in the 1950s, and who have been driving ever since with no way of knowing what is the standard of our driving. So it was that we felt that a bit of a refresher course and assessment might be a good idea. The course is put on by the Sheffield Safer Roads Partnership in conjunction with South Yorkshire Police and the Safety First Driving Academy, and held at the Lifewise Centre in Hellaby. If you are going from Sheffield it is very easy to find, being just off J1 of the M18. We were welcomed with coffee and found our places in the large meeting room along with over fifty others. Introductions were made, and the morning programme of talks began. The aim of the course is focus on area of special interest to the over 60s. These include general health and well-being, eyesight and eye health, alcohol awareness, vehicle maintenance including car adaptations and mobility aids, alternatives to car travel with
HEALTHWATCH INFO SESSION IN SHEFFIELD

Involve is collaborating to run an events in Sheffield, aimed principally at new volunteers. You don’t need medical knowledge to be a Healthwatch volunteer– just common sense and a desire to influence issues such as: • Are older patients properly treated in hospital? • Do students and young people get the health advice they need? • How should health services be arranged for rural residents? • Are the drugs and treatments that patients want available? Healthwatch volunteers will get: • Opportunities to influence decisions about health services • Valuable experience in community work and volunteering • The chance to represent the interests of friends, family and community • Training opportunities in community leadership Pop in to the Healthwatch info session for the chance to meet other potential volunteers, hear from local Healthwatch organisers and learn about volunteer opportunities. advice on public transport options, and the role of the emergency services after a road traffic collision. We were shown videos of motoring scenarios, ‘what should you do?’ etc, and throughout there was plenty of opportunity to ask questions and share experiences. The morning ended with a very good buffet lunch, and afterwards we could visit the many stalls offering advice and help in the areas we heard about during the morning. There were lots of give-aways too! This was also a chance to see the Lifewise Centre which is a large ‘warehouse’ type building made up of various scenarios, like a television studio, used by amongst others, all the junior schools in South Yorkshire where pupils moving on senior schools spend a day learning how to keep safe. At the end of the day we were offered the chance to sign up for a one-to-one driving assessment. This we did, and in early January an instructor from the Safety First Driving Academy came to our house, and we each had an hour driving, in our own car, in all sorts of situations around Sheffield. It was a most interesting experience, and I am glad to say that we both ‘passed’ with complimentary reports! The whole experience was well worthwhile, cost nothing, and we could certainly recommend it to others, who like us have been driving a long time, and hope to To book a place on the next event on Thursday 4 April, starting at 10am, call 01709 832 455 or email drive.safe@southyorks.pnn.police.uk continue to do so.

IS THERE ANYBODY THERE? That is one of the questions we ask ourselves on a daily basis. Is there really ‘life after death’? Clairaudient Medium Steve Holbrooks’ main claim is that, indeed, life does go on. Night after night in packed theatres across the UK, Steve passes messages on to people in the audience from relatives who have moved on to their spiritual home. You too can see for yourself why he is so popular, as he visits a town or city near you and really does confirm that our spirit never dies, just moves on to a different level, a spirit that retains a love for the living and a memory that will never die. Steve has worked successfully for over 30 years in the UK, and has worked on many Caribbean cruises, and a Mediterranean cruise. He will pass messages on from our loved ones in the most accurate detail, and is commonplace in Steves shows. On one occasion, a lady was being spoken to by her mother in the spirit world, who mentioned a pink poodle – it turns out the daughter had been making home-made tomato soup for her mother while she was ill, but it tasted so bad she fed it to their pet dog, and it turned its fur pink! Who on earth would know such random details, unless the loved one was communicating through Steve? Steve is actually a ‘Clairaudient’ medium rather than Clairvoyant, so he hears the spirits rather than sees

them, and sees himself as a telephone exchange between this world and the next. The evenings really take you on a roller coaster of emotions, comfort and joy, and from laughter to tears and back again! One lady was once receiving a message from her late husband, and just as Steve was about to give her some proof, she shouted ‘Send him back, I couldn’t stand him!’ It just goes to prove that it’s not always those who you want to come through that do so initially. Steve now works on a regular basis with a Psychic Artist, called Sandy Ingham, who draws the spirits Steve is talking to, a really amazing sight to see, a real complement to the whole evening. Dates where Sandy is appearing are on our website, so keep an eye out for this wonderful experience. Steve has 3 books out – Light in the Darkness, Out of this World, and Survival, the most recent. A true insight into the day to day life of a working medium, Steves beliefs on many areas of Spiritualism, and a great background into Steves life. We are always being prompted for a new one, so hold on, and watch this space! Steve has raised tens of thousands of pounds for charities over the years, over £50000 for his local hospice in Wakefield, £5000 for MacMillan Support, and most recently our current total for PACT – a charity that helps terminally ill children across the UK – is over £18000. He is dedicated to raising money and awareness for this charity. DON’T MISS THIS EMOTIONAL, COMPELLING AND MOVING EVENING

WELCOME to our second edition of The Wedding Guide 2013. I hope you have all managed to battle on through the snow, and that it hasn’t dampened your spirits, whatever the weather, I am sure planning your day will be special. A winter wedding, a summer marquee, a Church or Civil ceremony, whatever you have chosen to celebrate your wedding our Guide is here to help you with news, views and helpful advice. This is an interactive guide; we want to hear your stories so if you have some advice to pass on, please let us know. So we can all share your views on this page. I want your highs and lows, you’re good and bad. I want to hear all about it and so do the other readers. Send me your success stories, or photographs of your special day to mandy@ mercurynewspaper.co.uk Most of the service providers on this page say we have put them firmly on the map by being part of this monthly feature and opened up a whole new world. So come on all you brides to be, there must be someone on this guide who has got what you are looking for. This weekend is our very own Mercury Wedding Fair at the Copthorne Hotel on Sunday 3rd March. If you are looking for ideas for a 2014 wedding, or last minute extra’s for a wedding this year, it is sure to be a great event.
Entry is free, the red carpet, and a complimentary glass of bucks fizz for the Bride and Groom will be available in Reception, canapés will also be served. A string quartet will play in the reception area to create the mood. There are 2 fashion shows at 12 noon and 2.00pm courtesy of Lillys Bridal at Neepsend. If you are an exhibitor, I still have space available at extremely competitive rates so call me now for a quote The average wedding is said to cost £20,000, I can imagine how easy it is to get carried away and reach that amount. Obviously, you don’t have to spend that much, some venues are offering the whole package for under £2000, so it can be as extravagant or as intimate as you want. Moving onto our pages this week, Many of our advertisers in this feature have been in the business for a number of years and can offer you experience, value and customer service, but mainly, their aim is to help make your day the most memorable, special occasion. I have had the pleasure of working along side most of these people, and have witnessed their dedication, passion and commitment to making your day special. Venues are generally one of the first things on your list to choose, as this will be the main focus of the event. They are also booked up well in advance, up to 3 years in some cases, so it’s never to early to view them. Large, small, grand or intimate, each wedding is different, and each venue can offer different things depending on your requirements.
It is always good to view a couple of venues in mind, and go and view them, more than once if need be. The proprietor will be more than happy to show you around, and talk through your requirements until you are happy with your choice. The Sitwell Arms at Renishaw are proud sponsors of our Wedding Guide, and they provide quality facilities at affordable prices. It is a beautiful 18th century coaching inn with beautiful surroundings, perfect for the photographs. The Old Rectory in Handsworth is set in beautiful surroundings, whether you want a buffet or a banquet, this venue can cater for 5 for 150 guests. Looking for a venue with a difference? The Kiveton and Wales Parish Hall offer you the whole package for one affordable cost, so check them out. THE PHEASANT HOSTS LIVE ENTERTAINMENT
The Pheasant at Oughtibridge is bringing a feast of live entertainment every Saturday throughout March, for the enjoyment of regulars and visitors from further afield. This Saturday, 2nd March, sees the return of Sue and Paul’s Entertainment Night, a great attraction soon brought back by popular demand. Then on the 9th, Male Vocalist Deano appears again, with Paul Barry following on the 16th. Saturday 23rd is a date to note in the diaries of the many followers of the Bus Pass Buskers. This group of evergreen entertainers will be bringing their unique act, featuring Skiffle, Country & Western, and Blues to The Pheasant and this promises to be great night of fun and frolics. If you haven’t discovered The Pheasant yet it is to be found on Station Lane (postcode S35 0HS) Oughtibridge, where landlord Ken and his team have created a warm and welcoming village pub atmosphere. Why not try it on a Friday instead of visiting a chip shop; The Pheasant can provide quality fish, chips and mushy peas for two people for only a Tenner! That’s got to be worth it. Functions are also catered for; for details phone Ken on 0114 286 4577.

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE
THE DOWNTOWN STAR IS BACK
RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques
MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
She started her career way back at the time of World War 2, even took off the legendary Vera Lynn, toured with fellow young rising star Julie Andrews and then took to singing in both French and her native English. That was until the 1960s and a blossoming pop career which awaited for one of our best loved solo female vocalists, recording songs like “Don’t sleep in the subway” and of course “Downtown”. Now just turned 80, Petula Clark has returned to the music scene once more with “Lost in You”. It’s her first new CD for some time and includes both new songs and re-workings of older familiar ones as well. There’s “Love me tender”, John Lennon’s “Imagine” and even a 2013 take on Petula’s own classic, “Downtown”. I’m pleased to say that here at Magic we’ve managed to secure some copies which we’re giving away all week long. Just tune in across the day for details of the next winning track, call in when Radio Nightingale broadcasts you hear it and you could be a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week winner. for the patients and staff of the I look forward to hopefully Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. For giving away a copy to you more information about the station on my show first thing in the visit www.radionightingale.org.uk morning. This week I interviewed Lt Col McPherson of the Royal Artillery. Col ‘Mac’ is leading on the development of services in Rotherham for forces veterans. The Armed Forces Community Covenant follows the principles that individuals should not be disadvantaged as a result of their service. Particularly in relation to healthcare, housing, education, benefits and tax. The Community Covenant is a voluntary statement of mutual support between civilian organisations in Rotherham and its local Armed Forces The Community Covenant team are working to set up a Military Community and Veterans Centre in Rotherham. Throughout January and February they have been conducting surveys with current or veteran forces personnel to find out what individuals would want from such a centre. The team are interested to hear from as many people as possible so if you have served, or are serving, in any of the Armed Forces and would like to contribute, contact Steve BenthamBates on 0785 228 7799, or email him at sbenthambates@cto.org.uk to request a copy of the survey. V FESTIVAL 2013
If you have any news, reviews or events you would like featuring please email info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk
live PREVIEW
Words by KT Evans
The summers ultimate party weekend and highlight of the entire festival calendar, V Festival is an almighty salute to the best acts within the highflying music industry. Having seen the likes of Rihanna, Eminem and The Killers take to its stages on previous historic occasions, this year’s wave of announcements have both come as a massive treat and enormous shock to each and every potential V Fest ticket holder… If you were left feeling gutted about not being able to snatch one of the Mrs Carter World Tour tickets for Beyonce’s live shows across here in the UK, all is not lost as the first headline act to be announced at both the Staffordshire and Essex split sites for V Festival is no other than the global superstar herself. Beyonce is easily the biggest name in pop at the moment with a string of number one hits and albums to her name. Recently popping out a baby to Mr Jay Z, ‘Sasha Fierce’ (the ex-destiny’s child stage name) is gearing up to produce one of the most memorable live sets ever to appear at a summers event. Remember Kings Of Leon, our loveable US import who wrote the killer of an album, ‘Only By The Night,’ a certified soundtrack to 2008? Yes, us to… they’re back. We almost did a double take upon finding out KOL were to headline V Fest 2013 as they’ve somewhat slipped under the radar since the release of Come Around Sundown in 2010. However let this be a sign that future recording plans are on the horizon for the Nashville family quartet who with an enormous anthemic repertoire will no doubt get you singing your hangover away. Also announced within the very early stages of V Festival 2013 include The Script, Stereophonics and Emeli Sande. Since performing at a mid-afternoon slot to now one of the major headliners of the summers event, Emeli Sande has had a terrific year. With her debut studio album one the biggest selling album of 2012, the starlet recent single clown’ is a good old tear jerker so we give prior warning to bring plenty of tissues. Further names to play V Festival include Calvin Harris, Paloma Faith, Rudimental, Jessie J, Basement Jaxx, Fun, Labrinth, Maverick Sabre along with many many more. Check out www.vfesttival. com for a full line up and ticket information. Tickets can be purchased or this summer’s best live event from 1st March 2013.

THE BRITS THE WINNERS
Clothing, Footwear, Jewellery... A Little Bit of Everything
Open 10-6 monday-saturday _ 11-5 Sunday
Words by KT Evans
Brit Awards, we really do have time to take our hat off to you and say how much of a fantastic show of excellence you put on for us every single year. Not only a celebration of all things huge within the music industry, it seems this year in particular has unearthed a whole new wave of performers who were in desperate need of being celebrated. Hosted by James Cordon at London’s O2 arena on 20th February, we couldn’t think of any one more deserving that the batch of winners who were handed over a designer Brit Award… we want one! In total, 14 BRIT awards were given out on the night, which harboured more lip stick and hairspray than we have ever seen before in all our lives. A cracking performance from Ben Howard celebrated the solo artists two awards, one of British breakthrough act and another for British male solo artist. Although his name may not stand out of the ordinary to you, the acoustic singer has a voice which could melt even the stoniest of hearts along with writing some of the best love songs this side of the millennium. On the flip side to this, British female solo artist was awarded to Emeli Sande, but let’s be honest, that was pretty much in the bag for her after her rendition of ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon at the opening ceremony of the Olympics 2012. Coldplay, our biggest musical export for America were marked best live band, a much deserved award for the anthemic group. Mumford and Sons won best British Group along with The Black Keys who were awarded Best International Group. The Black Keys personify all that is good about indie music. Taking themselves with a pinch of salt and producing some of the finest music videos on the current market (check out ‘Tiighten Up’ if you want a really belly laugh) they performed at Leeds and Reading festival 2012 and emerged with a barrage of new fans. Adele was awarded British single for her James Bond theme tune ‘Skyfall,’ followed by International female solo artist granted to Lana del Ray. British International success went to no other than One Direction (have you seen their new tattoos, you will cry with horror) and Best album went to Emeli Sande for ‘Our Version Of Events.’ A successful night for each and every one who attended the Brit awards 2013, how on earth are they going to top this year’s mega even in 2014? We’ll just have to wait and see…

REVIEW
round-up by stuart renton
It’s my second birthday. I’ve been putting the gutter into gutter press for exactly two years and to celebrate... I’m going to cross the line with a multitude of sins, so hang on to those extra-large suppositories - you’ll need them! I did originally want to make this column a list of all the outtakes that have been deleted over the years (including the Mile High Club volcano eruption joke and the mystery of the missing sausage at Our Lady Snatcherly’s Nunnery), but they went down faster than an M&M thrown onstage at an Rik Waller concert (I hear he’ll literally work for peanuts these days). So I’m left discussing Seth McFarlane’s potential faux pas at the Oscars with his ‘We Saw Your Boobs’ song which celebrated the reveals of various Oscar-winners’ jugs over the years. While the song moves along at a perky pace, it was quickly revealed that part of the song involved actresses who were involved in rape scenes, and thus the controversy starts - mainly by a couple of newspapers who promptly listed the movies that no one knew about in the first place and informed everyone exactly how angered they should be about this anti-feminist and ultra-offensive nonsense. “I am outraged,” Ms P Niss, feminist from Big Beaver, Pennsylvania, ranted. “As soon as the New York Times listed the movies involved I was incensed and felt the need to rant about McFarlane’s song that sets women’s rights back decades to anyone who would hear.” And now everyone’s talking about the Oscar boob winners and how insulted (or aroused) they were by going back and re-watching all the movies (just to see if the jugs really were proffered to the world as Seth promised). For those of you with pause buttons, the details you require are: 27:45 (Silkwood), 1:14:53 (Gia), and 43:17 in

Mullholland Drive. Don’t say I’m not good to you! So, is there really any point in getting upset when someone is deliberately trying to be intentionally offensive? I get upset every time I hear Jimmy Carr laugh, but I struggle to hold it inside. Ultimately, like ‘We Saw Your Boobs’, people that get outraged over the ridiculous or the obviously-trying-to-beoffensive really gets on my tits. But, if you don’t agree, you can always write to the Daily Mail at iseejugz@thedailymail.co.uk. Or better still, wait until the paper tells you what to feel upset about (which it does on a regular basis - woman on dole buys bird for a grand – how dare she? I’m going to write and complain!). I swear if the media just put their powers to better use the world would be a much more productive place (instead of reporting on the most outrageous stories and trying to make everything seem so much darker than it actually is). Then we could write letters to out corrupt politicians (which is almost all of them) and right wrongs instead of simply moaning about the injustice of it all and worrying about the unimportant stuff. Need an example? Did you know that while the Government was telling us all how liberated and brilliant it was for taking the next step toward gay marriage, it also managed to sneakily pass the Secret Justice Bill, giving the Government considerably more power to hide certain high-level dealings from the public by binding the media and other social networks. That’s scary stuff that allows them to conduct many things almost invisibly. This is the kind of thing that goes unnoticed, because no one cares. And why should they when they’ve got Seth McFarlane’s booby song to complain about?! Anyway, Happy Birthday to me. Here’s to another two years of filth loosely wrapped up under the guise of professional journalism!

angler’s corner by Clint Walker
Well, as promised, I went to the Ricoh Show and it was as I expected.... good to meet up with Maver boss Phil Briscoe and the Spomb team before wandering around trying to find some contacts for forthcoming Tackle & Gun magazine features. I did pick up a set of Reuben Heaton’s at a great price, bought nothing else, but I did see Roger Surguy of Dragon Carp who was knocking out cheap tackle like there is no tomorrow; in this age of support your local store (or lose it) remember this....buy cheap, buy twice....draw your own conclusions, but I know what I would avoid buying.... Cheap tat brought for a few quid will fall to bits within hours, and may put off potential anglers from a lifetime of enjoyment; I know some tackle can be pricey, but spend the extra money and buy something that will last, rather than line the pockets of those who buy it for pennies, import it, and knock it out at a few quid as “.... reduced, should be £100,special price £20” It never was, it never will be......avoid! Anyway, I’ve been fishing, and I’ve caught fish....my golden streak continues despite bitter winds giving a windchill of almost -7 so at the moment, I’m happy with my lot. My new baits are doing the business; the more I use them, the more I catch, and the greater my confidence grows so I’m hoping that this year will be a good one! My latest trip to a freezing cold Cudmore fishery saw me on Arena Pool, as used in Fish O’Mania finals, to try and tempt something (anything!) in absolutely atrocious conditions. As I set up, I was approached by an irate angler who informed I couldn’t fish the 32 peg pool as he had booked
LOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEK SPONSORED BY CHAMPS
a match for pensioners. I have no problem with being asked to leave for that reason, but as I’d been told I could actually fish by the owner as the match hadn’t been confirmed and would be for a maximum of twelve anglers anyway, I was somewhat disgruntled with his comments....a short row ensued, which wasn’t pleasant, but I will not be bullied off a pool I’m perfectly entitled to fish just because some stroppy git says so! If a more polite request had been made, then I would gladly have moved! Chump! Anyway, the match went ahead, and an almost complete lack of action apart from three anglers hitting a shoal between them saw some anglers pack up early as the biting wind tore through flat caps and cagoules at a rate of knots. I had just the one carp, but on my side of the ‘doughnut’, not one angler even had a bite, never mind a fish, and I was happy to see the original protagonist sit huddled over his rod, freezing and cussing for five hours without a single knock! Karma? Perhaps..... hope so! I met another pensioner this week, and do you know what? He was an absolute gent, but I’ll tell you more next week....tight lines!

WEEKEND ROUND-UP LOCAL FOOTBALL by Michael Clarke
County Senior League Premier Division Shaw Lane Aqua Force Barnsley scored five for the second week running. They beat Everest FC 5-3 at Handsworth Working Men’s Club. The result was enough to take them top-of-the-table, due to Houghton Main not playing. Aqua Force are now a point clear with 11 games to play. An Alvin Riley brace helped inspire Penistone Church to a comprehensive 4-1 home win over Frecheville. Mitch Savage and Danny Joynes were also on target for the inform Penistone. Penistone have won their last three league games, and only sit a point off the lead in third position. Millmoor Juniors made it seven straight league wins, with a 6-1 home win over Grange Park Football Ground. Liam Royles scored a hat-trick for Millmoor, who are three points behind Aqua Force with a spare game. Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves continued their inconsistent run, as they were downed 3-1 at Kinsley Playing Field by Kinsley Boys. The points were much needed by Kinsley, who remain third bottom. Ian King and Ben Compai scored the goals for High Green Villa, as they beat Ecclesfield Red Rose 2-0 at Thorncliffe Playing Fields. It is only the second time this season that High Green have registered back-to-back league wins. South Kirkby Colliery were held to an exciting 4-4 draw by Swallownest Miners Welfare at Millar’s Walk. The point was enough to take South Kirkby off the bottom and above Ecclesfield Red Rose. The draw is South Kirkby’s second in four days, as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Wombwell Main on Wednesday night. Division One League leaders Athersley Recreation Reserves game away against Hallam Reserves was postponed due to a frozen pitch, so Oughtibridge WMSC had the opportunity to put
some pressure on them. This was an opportunity they gladly took with the help of 22 year old Matthew Spencer. Spencer scored four goals as Oughtibridge won 5-2 away against Thorpe Hesley. Oughtibridge are now a point behind the leaders with two games in-hand. Swinton Athletic won for the third consecutive week. They were 3-1 winners over Bramley Sunnyside Juniors at Swinton Miners Welfare. The three points keep Swinton in third, but they are only two points off the lead. Silkstone United were held to a 3-3 draw at home by Sheffield Athletic. Despite the draw, Silkstone remain fourth and are now four games unbeaten in the league. Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves made it back-to-back wins for the first time this season, as they beat struggling Caribbean Sports 1-0 at Park Road. Scott Turner with the goal for Worsbrough. Goals from Scott Dinnigan, Rob Jerrison and Greg Ashmore got the goals for Sheffield Bankers, as they defeated Wickersley 3-2 at Davy Sports Club. Division Two Jubilee Sports stretched their league unbeaten run to 11 games, with a 3-1 win over Sheffield Lane Top at Civil Service Ground. The win keeps Jubilee at the summit of Division Two. Millmoor Juniors Reserves are also in good form. They made it four straight wins, with a 2-0 away win over Frecheville Reserves. Both Andy Green and Michael Clarke were on the score-sheet for Millmoor, who are only second on goal difference. Hare & Hounds MFC edged-out Boynton Sports 4-3 at the Civil Service Ground. Hare & Hounds remain in third position, and are also only kept from the lead by a poorer goal differential. New Bohemians continued their renaissance, with a 3-1 home victory over Kingstone United. Chad Riley-Long, Nassim Koriba and Craig Fox were all on target for New Bohemians, as they registered their five consecutive league win.
racing form by Timelord
The Channel 4 coverage this weekend will show seven races - four from Newbury and three from Doncaster. With just a few days left before the Festival the racing is at a slightly lower level this weekend as many of the big names are prepared for the Cheltenham showpiece. Newbury: 2.05 Betfair Supporting Greatwood Handicap Hurdle, Class 3, 4yo+, 0-130, 3m 110yds: A decent-sized field looks likely to go to post for this trappy handicap. My top rated few seem to be out of sorts to varying degrees this season and, for that reason, are overlooked as they do not inspire a great deal of confidence at present. Instead I am opting for Michael Appleby’s Beyeh who has finished a close second on her last two outings and looks to be ready to strike. However she also holds an entry for the 2.00 at Doncaster on Saturday so check where she runs on the day. In this race she may have most to fear from Emma Lavelle’s gelding Off The Ground who reverts to hurdling after a spell of chasing but who has run well recently over the larger obstacles. After these two the next best could be Powerful Ambition followed by Water Garden and Monetary Fund. 2.40 Barbury International Supporting Greatwood Veterans’ Handicap Chase, 0-145, 3m 2f 110yds: Not many of these have recorded good figures on their most recent outings but one who has my top rating and fastest last time out figure is Victor Dartnall’s Exmoor Ranger who earns a relatively confident nod to score. Hey Big Spender and Posh Bird are the two that I fancy may follow him home based on their most recent runs. Desperate Dex’s last time out second to Master Overseer was not a bad effort but came in a slowly run affair at Wincanton. Of the others Idarah, Possol, Rockiteer, West End Rocker and Tartak could make nuisances of themselves if at their best. 3.15 Ladbrokes Supporting Greatwood Handicap Hurdle, Class 3, 4yo+, 0-140, 2m 110yds: With apparently uninspiring form figures on offer Paul Nicholls’ Ted Spread is a somewhat speculative suggestion to take this but he may have a better chance than they indicate and could be decent value on the day. He hasn’t run since finishing down the field behind Raya Star at Ascot in early November but, based on that run, could end up in the winners enclosure if fully tuned up for this. He will probably meet the sternest opposition from Michael Blake’s Sporting Boy who is a strong first reserve and who is on a roll just now. He looks to have the edge over Meetings Man based on their Wetherby running last time out and would appear to be on the upgrade. Others to catch the eye in a fairly open contest are: Zafranagar; If in Doubt; Cry of Freedom; and Master of the Game – all of whom can be given chances of sorts. 3.50 Stan James Supporting Greatwood Gold Cup (Handicap Chase), Grade 3, 5yo+, 2m 4f: This looks to be too short a distance for Ballabriggs who would appear to be getting another prep run for his main target (the Grand National) but if he runs well it could point to a very big run in that race. After some deliberation I reckon that this
could end up in a very close finish between recent scorer Midnight Sail, Micheal Flips, Pepite Rose, Renard, Mahogany Blaze, Big Fella Thanks and Join Together. Very marginal preference is for Pepite Rose who recorded the best last time out figure in my system but who has an alternative entry for the 1.45 at Doncaster. The first reserve slot goes to Renard who also ran well last time and who holds Cheltenham entries for the Byrne Group Plate and the Grand Annual Chase. After these two the pecking order is: Mahogany Blaze; Midnight Sail; Join Together; Micheal Flips; and Big Fella Thanks. Doncaster: 2.20 William Hill – Download the App Handicap Hurdle, Class 2, 4yo+, 0-145, 3m 110yds: The quintet with entries also at Newbury: Beyeh; Destroyer Deployed; Powerful Ambition; Water Garden; and Monetary Fund could all prove troublesome if putting in an appearance here. However, I like the chance of the Keith Reveley trained gelding Victor Hewgo who won last time out in a good time for the conditions. Beyeh gets the first reserve slot (if turning up), followed by (in order of preference): Barafundle; Ogee; Powerful Ambition; Water Garden; Monetary Fund; and Destroyer Deployed. 2.55 William Hill Grimthorpe Chase (Handicap Chase), Class 2, 5yo+, 3m 2f: Strictly on their running over this course and distance back in December 2011 at these weights Ikorodu Road would have a little improvement to find with Harry the Viking. However, Ikorodu Road progressed from that run to win this race last year and having run well last time out gets a narrow verdict over Harry the Viking. Next best could well be Night in Milan, followed by Court by Surprise, Duke of Lucca (who ran well to be third in last week’s Racing Plus Chase), Lord Villez and Mr Moss. 3.30 William Hill – No.1 Downloaded Betting App Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, Listed, 4yo+, 3m 110yds: Of the eight runners here none troubled the clock on their last appearances and three have still to do so in their careers. My overall top rated mare is Wilde Ruby (96) but she was pulled up last time out which does not provide much comfort. Second best in my system is Ma Filleule (95) who is one point adrift of Wilde Ruby but, more reassuringly, won last time out. Ballinahow Star has won her last two starts and must therefore enter the picture but she is one of the three that still has to record a time fast enough to register in my system. Carrigeen Lechuga and the other last time out winner Highland Retreat are the remaining two that still have to register fast enough times to go into my system. This leaves Tweedledrum (70), Detour Ahead (61) and Toubeera (50) all of whom don’t need to make much improvement to trouble the top pair. In what looks a wide open contest I narrowly prefer the chances of Ma Filleule.

Millers & Rovers News 2012-13
THREE WINS IN A ROW AS MILLERS SINK THE GAS Rotherham United made it three wins in a row as two goals in two minutes helped them to a 2-1 victory over Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium. Substitute Kayode Odejayi opened the scoring on the hour mark before Lee Frecklington doubled the lead, whilst Joe Anyinsah’s fine individual effort proved a mere consolation. Manager Steve Evans was forced into one change for the lengthy trip to Gloucestershire with Daniel Nardiello travelling, but not making the 18 man squad. Kieran Agard took his place in the starting 11, with Craig Morgan starting on the bench; his first inclusion in the squad since getting injured in the victory over Cheltenham Town on November 17th. An uneventful first 20 minutes saw the action flow from end to end with little in the way of clear cut chances. Kari Arnason had a shot blocked from distance, whilst it was the lovely Joe Anyinsah doing most of the running for the home side. The first real effort arrived 25 minutes in as John-Joe O’Toole collected the ball 25 yards from goal, and with a lack of options fired low, narrowly wide and into the sidenetting, sending one half of the Memorial support into a temporary bout of celebration. The Millers enjoyed more possession and should have been ahead 35 minutes in. After a magnificent claim by Andy Warrington, the ‘keeper picked out Alex Revell whose flick-on found Agard; the striker got a fine slice on the ball to feed the onrushing Frecklington who really should have done better when opting to lob the onrushing Steve Mildenhall. Within a minute they could have been punished, but Mark McChrystal’s header at the far post was high and wide. The Millers responded however, and went on the attack with Danny Kearns collecting a ball in the centre circle and bursting forward in the 42nd minute. He eventually slid Agard in on the right who opted to square the ball rather than going alone and his final pass was beyond Revell. The second-half was just over a minute old when Warrington’s palms were stung. Out of nowhere, full-back Michael Smith fired goalwards from 25
yards, and his shot was destined for the bottom corner until the ‘keeper parried wide. Meanwhile at the other end, David Noble fed Frecklington, now operating wide on the right of midfield who stood the ball up for half-time substitute Odejayi, but his powerful header was cleared off the line by McChrystal. The home side had a spell of pressure, going close from two set-pieces just before the hour mark, but Agard’s run from his own area to that of the Gas soon took the pressure off. The Millers attacking play resulted in Arnason firing over from distance. However, Evans’ side didn’t have much longer to wait for the opening goal as they committed men forward and Revell found space on the right-hand side of the area; his shot wasn’t dealt with by Mildenhall who parried to the feet of Odejayi. The striker took a touch before showing the composure to pass the ball into the bottom corner. Just two minutes later and the lead was doubled. Arnason’s hopeful ball into the box saw Odejayi this time turn provider, flicking-on to the far post where the previously quiet Frecklington half-volleyed into the top of the net from 10 yards out. The Millers were soon reminded that it was far from game over, as a poor clearance from a free-kick landed at former Bristol City man David Clarkson’s feet. The forward volleyed goalwards and despite a double deflection taking it away from Warrington, the ‘keeper got down well to tip wide. Moments later, captain Tom Parkes fired over from a similar position. A goal did eventually arrive as the clock ticked into the 82nd minute through Anyinsah. The attacker is proving to enjoy the meetings between the two sides as this was his third goal in four games. He collected the ball on the corner of the area, before stepping inside and firing across Warrington into the bottom corner to bring the home side back into the game with just eight minutes to go. With time ticking, a Millers attack was half-cleared and Johnny Mullins’ knock back into the box was flicked on by Odejayi for Revell running in behind who was denied by a wonderful last ditch tackle by Parkes.

ALL SQUARE IN PROMOTION CHASING CLASH Yeovil got the game underway and won a corner in the third minute. This was cleared out to Coppinger, who linked with Cotterill to put Paynter in on goal but he was tackled and lost out. In the 6th minute Spurr was penalised in an aerial challenge on the Rovers left touchline. The free kick was played to the far post where Woods, seeing it late because of the mass of bodies in front of him dived and parried the ball back into play. MADDEN, from two yards, hammered it into the roof of the net. The Rovers won a corner but nothing came from it then, in the 14th minute, a good attack from the home team gave Paynter a shot from 15yards that Stech tipped over the bar. From the Rovers corner the visitors’ broke away but only won a corner. In the 20th minute, good play down the Rovers right ended with Coppinger, just inside the penalty area, firing at goal but Stech caught the ball well. Two minutes later Burn, for Yeovil, had a go from 35yards but put well wide. This was followed by Cotterill, on the Rovers right, spotting Stech off his line and trying his luck from 45 yards but the keeper got back to catch the ball. The Rovers were trying hard but found a resolute defence in front of them. However, they pressed on and as time ran down they got their reward. In the 45th minute Husband got to the left byline and crossed for Paynter to head in but he headed the ball down for it bounce up against the bar, with Coppinger heading the rebound over the bar. Into added time and Husband hit a searing drive from the edge of the penalty area that Stech, diving full length to his left, pushed out for a corner. Cotterill put over the corner and PAYNTER, with a bullet header, levelled the score. The Rovers came out for the second half and played some good football for the first five minutes but got no reward. Then Upson, for the visitors, collected the ball on the halfway line, took it to the edge of the penalty area and fired wide. In the 58th minute Cotterill put a free kick to the far post where Spurr lifted it back to the middle but Jones headed over the bar. Past the hour and after a lengthy spell of possession for Yeovil Williams had a go from 25 yards but put wide. A corner shortly afterwards to the visitors’ was hit high over the bar from 20 yards by Madden. Then, in the 65th minute, Cotterill won a corner, put it to the middle where Jones headed it down and Coppinger put an overhead kick wide. A poor backpass to Woods in the 70th minute led to a race for the ball between Woods and Williams. The Yeovil man won but poked the ball wide of the post. Then a few minutes later and Lundstram had a twenty-five yarder saved. Hume, from the right, put

STEELERS BACK TO WINNING WAYS Dundee Stars 1-3 Sheffield Steelers The Sheffield Steelers returned to winning ways with a come from behind victory over the Dundee Stars on Sunday evening. Goals from Jeff Legue (2) and Matt Stephenson earned the Steelers their only points of the weekend following two road defeats in Nottingham (Friday) and Belfast (Saturday). Star’s forward Sami Ryhenen had scored the only goal of the opening period before the Steelers hit back with strikes from Legue and Stephenson in the middle session. Legue added a 3rd 6 minutes before time to secure the win. Sheffield were without Shawn Limpright and lost Chris Frank on a 5 minute penalty and a game misconduct in the 33rd minute, before that forward Steven Goertzen picked up a knock and didn’t play the final stages of the game “We were pretty short benched there at the end” said head coach Ryan Finnerty “we were down to two centre’s with Legue and Hewitt double shifting. We never gave up though and played committed for the whole 60 minutes. “We made some adjustments on the power-play tonight and it certainly looked sharper. Our defence played well limiting the Stars to few real quality chances. “I think the boys are still feeling it after the defeats to Nottingham and Belfast, there is a feeling they let the fans and others at the club down. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves though, trust me no one else is. “We haven’t given up on this season at all. There is still lots for us to play for starting on Wednesday with the Challenge Cup semi final first leg”.

The Rovers pressed hard for a winner but Cotterill fired over from the angle of the penalty area on the right. LOCAL REFS REWARDED BY PRO CLUBS
Sheffield & Hallamshire FA have once again joined up with our five local professional clubs – Barnsley, Doncaster Rovers, Rotherham United, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday – to provide our referees with tickets for one of their home fixtures. The clubs have donated hundreds of tickets between them as an incentive to help the County FA retain the services of its army of grassroots football referees. Sheffield & Hallamshire FA’s Brian Coddington said: “The County FA has noticed an increase in the numbers of referees who continue to referee after their initial qualification. This is excellent news and the support of the professional clubs in reaching this position cannot be understated. We are extremely grateful for the assistance of the clubs and look forward to the partnership continuing.” Paul Douglas, Chief Operating Officer at Rotherham United said: “I think I speak for all five of the pro clubs when I say that we are very pleased to be able to support local referees in this way. As we all know, refereeing is sometimes a thankless task, and quite often you can’t do right for doing wrong or do wrong for doing right! Local referees are an important ingredient in the local football mix and this is one small way of saying thank you for all their efforts.” More than 1,100 referees are affiliated to Sheffield & Hallamshire FA but there is always a need for more. If you or anyone you know fancies taking up the whistle get in touch with Craig Grundy, Referees Development Officer, for more information via email at craig.grundy@sheffieldfa.com or telephone 0114 2414992. Sheffield & Hallamshire FA would like to think each of the clubs for their wonderful contributions.

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2 12-13 FOUR WINS ON THE SPIN FOR THE BLADES MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk
Jamie Murphy’s first half goal was enough to make it four wins on the bounce and dent the momentum of a promotion rival. Murphy slotted home after 20 minutes to complete the double over Bournemouth. However, it was a solid, organised display which paved the way for a third consecutive clean sheet. Boss Wilson took the opportunity to name an unchanged squad after the impressive victory over Colchester a week earlier, whilst the home team included former Blade, Francis. The Blades - playing in all white - began with Flynn and Murphy wide and Robson central in support of Kitson and the early signs were positive. Less than three minutes had elapsed when a neat, patient build up began with Collins and involved Maguire, Higginbotham, Flynn, Higginbotham again and Kitson’s flick on before Robson’s half-volley struck the top of the crossbar. Bournemouth, however, displayed why they are also promotion hopefuls by hitting back with two good chances in the space of 60 seconds - all before the first ten minutes had been completed. After a Pitman run, Long was forced to push away a shot from Grabban and then, from a corner, Doyle, situated at the near post, blocked a powerful blast from Arter, which was heading for goal. Higginbotham’s header from Robson’s free-kick was saved by goalkeeper Jalal but the Blades edged in front on 20 minutes. Kitson won a free-kick, which was delivered from the halfway line and after a significant slip by Painter, MURPHY picked up possession, saw his first shot rebound off a post but the Scotsman coolly slotted home at the second attempt. Clever touches by Kitson and McDonald presented a chance for McMahon, but he fired over, whilst for the remainder of the half the Blades did a very efficient job in stifling Bournemouth and keeping the locals quiet. Starting with Kitson in attack, the Blades worked hard out of possession to prevent the home side getting a view of Long’s goal. The half ended with Murphy recovering from a knock and a little bit of ill-feeling on the pitch but the slender lead was intact. Maguire began the second period like he did the first, by blasting the ball out of the ground to alleviate any potential danger but the United defender was pleased when Grabban failed to latch on to Pit-
man’s cross on 51 minutes. The unpleasantness from the first half continued when Pitman ran into Collins looking to get the Blades defender in trouble. Fortunately for United, the referee was ideally placed and saw what happened. United’s first offensive move of the second half came when McDonald burst forward but his deflected shot came just a little too quickly for Kitson. Bournemouth’s constant barracking of the officials continued when O’Kane’s cross hit Collins, but no penalty was forthcoming, although there were bookings for Robson, who spoke out of turn, and Doyle, who was pulling back McQuoid. Bournemouth used all their allotted substitutions with more than 15 minutes remaining and with them chasing the game, expectedly, they made most of the running late on. With 78 minutes gone, Ritchie’s cross was turned onto his own crossbar by Maguire but Long was wellplaced. Robson’s last contribution, before being replaced by Poleon, was to set up a Blades move down the right. Murphy played across the box to Kitson and then Flynn, who slotted home, but Kitson was adjudged guilty of holding back Cook in the build-up. Substitute Fraser was off target for Bournemouth before four added minutes were announced, in which, the Blades defended like the previous 90 - solidly and majestically. Bournemouth: Jalal, Francis, Cook, Seaborne, Painter (McQuoid 45), Ritchie, Arter, O’Kane, Pugh, Grabban (Tubbs 73), Pitman (Fraser 68). Unused: Allsop, Hughes, Fogden, MacDonald. Blades: Long, Higginbotham, Maguire, Flynn, Doyle, McDonald, Kitson, Collins, Robson (Poleon 84), Murphy, McMahon. Unused: Westlake, Hill, Ironside, McFadzean, Coyne, De Girolamo.
WILSON’S MURPHYS DELIGHT PRAISE GAFFERS NOTES www.sufc.co.uk
SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Danny Wilson believes the Blades 1-0 win at Bournemouth on Saturday was down to his team playing with ‘a real intelligence’. Jamie Murphy’s 20th minute strike at Dean Court was enough to secure United a fourth consecutive victory and in the process propel them above the Cherries to the summit of the League One table. United were full value for their third away win on the bounce which was achieved with another clean sheet. Speaking afterwards, the Gaffer couldn’t hide his delight, he commented: “I thought we were excellent but the way we stuck to our game plan was what pleased me the most. “We played with a real intelligence and that was terrific, especially at a place like this where we restricted them to possession away from our goal. “We were clever enough to cause them problems in and out of possession, the way we performed pleased me immensely. “We had some very good opportunities from the first minute when we hit the bar, but defensively we were excellent. “We stood up and competed. We also showed maturity not to get involved with the other side of the game, which again was crucial to our success. “The two teams were evenly matched on the day but fortunately we got the edge. “We have fought very hard in the last four matches and we knew a run of wins would get us to where we wanted to be, the job now is to stay there.”
Saturday’s matchwinner Jamie Murphy was keen to heap praise on his team-mates following the victory at Bournemouth. Murphy’s second away goal in successive matches paved the way for a win over the Cherries, which propelled the Blades back to summit of League One. The Scottish winger was delighted to get on the scoresheet again, but insisted it was a real team effort that was behind the success in Dorset. Murphy said: “It is always nice to score and get an away win, but especially in such an important game, against a good team like Bournemouth. “The goalie flicked my first attempt on to the post and when it came back to me I just kept my composure. I seem to score more goals with my left foot than right these days but they all count. “To get the win could be crucial and we thoroughly deserved it. It was a hardworking performance and our concentration levels were first class. We had worked all week on being organised and staying resolute because we knew Bournemouth would have long spells of possession. “Thankfully we got our goal early and that real gave us a foot hold in the game and from the first minute to the last we defended brilliantly.”

Sheffield Wednesday News 2012-13
SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 12-13 OWLS MARCH ON AT HOME MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk
A late Leroy Lita header handed Wednesday a crucial win over promotion-chasing Crystal Palace on Saturday. And the Owls were good overall value for the points, giving an excellent account of themselves against the in-form Eagles. Chances were few for both sides but Lita converted the one that mattered as Wednesday extended their recent purple patch. Unbeaten in six games and having suffered just one defeat in 11, the Owls were out to move clear of the Championship trapdoor and started in confident mood. Lewis Buxton sent a curling free kick narrowly over the crossbar before David Prutton’s fierce snapshot from distance followed suit. Lita then found space in the box but just failed to control an accurate feed from Buxton as Wednesday bossed the early exchanges. Palace, missing injured talisman Wilfried Zaha, were on the back foot as the first half unfolded and only rarely ventured upfield. When they did, the visitors met with a solid and well-drilled rearguard, boosted by the return of captain and former Eagles defender Anthony Gardner. The contest kept a similar theme leading to the interval, with the Owls in the box seat, and they might have headed up the tunnel a goal to the good had Damien Delaney not blocked a fizzing close range drive from Kieran Lee with keeper Julian Speroni beaten. The Londoners needed to up the ante after the break and did exactly that from the restart when Yannick Bolasie burst down the right and Giles Coke almost headed the resultant cross into his own net.
Loanee Scott Dobbie forced Chris Kirkland into a low near post save five minutes later, then Kagisho Dikgacoi tried his luck from 25 yards and was unfortunate to see the ball whistle wide. Dave Jones introduced Gary Madine with Connor Wickham making way as Wednesday sought to recapture their earlier dominance and Jeremy Helan, on for Lee, also entered the fray. The changes swung the game back in the Owls’ favour, although Palace had armoury of their own from the bench, most notably Kevin Phillips. But it was Bolasie who went close on the counter with 20 minutes to go when the tricky winger bore down on goal and Kirkland had to be alert to thwart the danger The game’s decisive moment, though, came on 81 minutes when Wednesday stole into the lead. Michail Antonio stood up a teasing cross right into the danger zone and Lita climbed the highest to bury a powerful into the back of the net and secure a priceless three points. Owls: Kirkland, Buxton, Gardner, Llera, Pugh, Lee (Helan 63), Coke, Prutton, Antonio (J Johnson 82), Lita, Wickham (Madine 57) Unused substitutes: Davies, Taylor, Semedo, McCabe Crystal Palace: Speroni, Richards, Parr (Butterfield 88), Bolasie, Dikgacol, Dobbie (Wilbraham 88), Jedinak, Murray, Williams (Phillips 68), Delaney, Ramage Unused substitutes: Price, Marrow, Easter, Moxey
JONES HAILS GOOD OLD OWLS WORK FASHIONED ETHIC VICTORY OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Dave Jones has hailed the work ethic rife throughout Hillsborough as the Owls continue their climb up the Championship table. Saturday’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace was earned by what the manager tagged ‘a dogged performance’ and symptomatic of the evident graft on and off the pitch. He said: “We are working from within and it is showing in all aspects of our game. There is a fantastic work ethic in this football club, from the chairman all the way down. “He loves the club, loves the place and it is a super place to come to work to. Everybody gets on, they enjoy each other’s company and that is a real plus. “The supports come in their thousands, they make for a terrific atmosphere and we are all so grateful for that “The players are a really good group and they now have a real determined look about them and some real belief. “They just don’t look like they are a going to concede, never mind lose, and it is credit to them for that. “They deserve all the praise they are getting because they have put the work in and are now getting the rewards.” Jones picked out midfield duo David Prutton and Giles Coke following the Palace triumph – and also reserved a mention for goalscorer Leroy Lita. He added: “That’s what Leroy does and that’s why we brought him here because he makes a difference. “We had barely got the ball to him for most of the game and then he pops up with the deciding goal. “He deserves credit for that and behind him, I thought David Prutton and Giles Coke were outstanding in the midfield. “Behind them, the defence was solid and I don’t remember Chris Kirkland having a great deal to do. “I am pleased for all of them because when we were losing games, we were playing well and they kept at it, they didn’t feel sorry for themselves or sulk. “They continue to put the work in and they are doing all the right things, now they are getting what they deserve.” Samantha & Carl Welcome You To

FANʼS COLUMN by Bunsen Bob
I love a good old fashioned 1-0 win. It has a certain air of satisfaction about it that gives me such fulfilment that a 4-3 victory doesn’t. But I’m a weirdo. I can consume a slide tackle, shoulder barge or towering header with as much relish as a normal football enthusiast enjoys a step over, bicycle kick or fancy flick. It’s probably because I have never executed the latter three personally in my life (with a successful outcome anyway), so I can relate to the more rustic features of our beautiful game. Our performance against Palace was one of the most effective defensive performances I’ve seen in a long time. Gardner and Llera were colossally organised against a potent strike force that were restricted to very few chances and Coke and Prutton, who played particularly deep, gave them a good shielding. Going forward we were a bit more lacklustre. I struggle to remember a Wednesday player taking the ball past a Palace defender whilst Lita and Wickham had very little to work with. The latter was particularly quiet and it was good to see Madine come on and play with a determined attitude to prove a point. It was the instinct of Lita that ultimately won us the game and his half naked celebration was a rousing one. With results elsewhere better for us than they have been of late this was a significant win. One that will raise already healthy confidence levels and has whetted the appetite for Saturday’s televised match against Forest. I expect a good game against a Forest side with fresh impetus since the return of the highly dislikable Billy Davies. However, with it being a 5.20pm kick off next week’s account might be slightly slurred...
