Copley’s Column
Having written last week paying tribute to the wonderful Dr. Alwyne Thomas, I am pleased to report on the most awesome funeral I have ever attended, which was conducted by his son, Shaun. This was a humanist funeral, with no religious involvement, and the theme was to celebrate the life of Alwyne, rather than mourn his death. Shaun did a sterling job, reading letters from his dad sent whilst he was working in India, a country close to his heart. These missives really evidenced Alwynes sharp wit and had us all laughing throughout the ceremony. Humanist funerals are becoming more popular these days and I must confess to enjoying, if that is the right word, this form of service rather than the traditional one with two or three hymns. I am seriously thinking of being dispatched in this way, at the same time hedging my bets by having the popular hymn, Jerusalem, as well as my favourite Matt Monro or Johnny Mathis songs to fill in the time as my life has been pretty uneventful in comparison to many other people. I am fortunate to know a couple of celebrants, the people who perform these ceremonies, and I shall be busy exploring ‘mate’s rates’. I was delighted to spend a couple of hours on Sunday with Shaun, talking about the life of Alwyne, making me realise how much myself and the many people who attended the funeral will miss him. Characters like this are these days very few and far between. Ellie Maguire organised a charity night this week to raise funds to find Ben Needham, the little boy who disappeared whilst on holiday on Kos. The night was a huge success and raised four thousand eight hundred pounds for this very worthy cause. My heart goes out to Ben’s mum, Kerry. It is hard to imagine and quantify the agony and never ending grief that she has suffered. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ellie for the wonderful job she did organising this event, which I understand ran like clockwork and all the artistes who gave up their time and talent

for this very worthy cause. It is occasions like this that restore my faith in human nature. Kim Sargant - Eastwood is shortly to leave top girl duo G String to follow a solo career I am sure you will all join me in wishing her much success in the future. How I remember her with affection when she worked on the sales team in the early days of this newspaper. How time flies as we approach the one thousandth issue. When I joined the paper we had only just reached three hundred issues. We are shortly holding a party to celebrate our one thousandth issue and guest of honour on my table will be the man without whom you would not be reading this column now, founder and original owner, and still my close friend, Phil Booker. On Saturday night, we fancied a drink in the Dronfield Arms, run by my good friend Veronica Tomlinson, and was pleased to see a very busy pub. Veronica is a smashing lass and has a great personality. We had heard that a top band was appearing at the Hearty Oak in Dronfield Woodhouse. Imagine my surprise and delight to discover that it was Vida/ Firecracker, a particular favourite of mine, who are amazing, with wonderful vocals by frontman Rich Lowndes, and three great musicians including my good pal Chris Firminger on lead guitar. The evening was enhanced by the attendance of Driving Range boss Rob Knox and his lovely wife Zoe and family with whom we will be holidaying for two weeks on Majorca in July. The closing of the Don Valley Stadium is a tragedy. This was financed by a Labour Council on borrowed money which has still not been repaid and the closure is being blamed on the enforced fifty million pounds cut by central government. I suggest that is the financial mis-management of the previous Labour government that has made these cuts necessary, and to suggest that the gold medal achieved by local top athlete justifies everything. We all know that the gold dealings by Gordon Brown are a huge embarrassment to his party.

KHAN COMEBACK Weekly Wit With... SET FOR SHEFFIELD ALBERT
After nearly two years fighting away from England, the “King” is back. On Saturday, April 27 at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield, British superstar Amir “King” Khan returns to England to face former World Champion Julio “The Kidd” Diaz. Tickets priced £300, £200, £125, £75 and £50 (subject to booking fee) are now on sale. Plus, 2012 Olympic Bronze Medalist Anthony Ogogo makes his long-awaited professional debut in a four round middleweight bout against an opponent to be determined. “April 27th is going to be a special night,” said Khan. “It’s been two years since I last fought in the United Kingdom and I can’t wait to get in the ring in front of my fans. Julio Diaz is a former World Champion and a very dangerous opponent who is coming off of an impressive performance in his last fight. I know he will be coming with guns blazing and I’m ready for whatever he has to throw at me. With my speed and boxing skills, and his power and experience, it makes for a really exciting matchup. He may have other ideas but I’m adamant that my return to the British shores is going to be a very successful one.” “I’m not going to England for the fight to go to the scorecards. I’m fighting for the knockout,” said Diaz. “I know the knockout is the only thing that will get me the win, so I’m training extra hard already in order to get a victory on Khan’s home turf. I’m a heavy hitter and he can’t take a punch, so to me, that is the perfect combination.” “I’m proud to be British and so the opportunity to turn pro on such a big fight card in England is a dream come true,” said Ogogo. “I want to become a world champion and this is the first very important step. I know what I have to do and that is to win and I want to win in style. I can’t wait to show the British public what I can do and will be training as hard as I possibly can between now and April 27th to get myself in the best shape I’ve ever been in”. “Return of the King”: Khan vs. Diaz is a 12 round 143 pound catch-weight bout presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Khan Promotions and sponsored by JD Sport and Maxi Muscle. Tickets, priced at £300, £200, £125, £75 and £50 (subject to booking fee) are on sale now, available in person at the arena box office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.motorpointarenasheffield. co.uk

Mars moves into your sign, and this can do wonders for your drive and personal energy, both which may have been blunted by recent cosmic activity. There is a sense of getting into a more dynamic frame of mind, whilst still being mindful of more sensitive considerations. Call for more advice...
A feistier you can emerge as Mars travels into in your sign of partnerships, and by the week’s end races towards a connection with Uranus. If you feel someone has been unfair or lacking respect, they’ll soon know they need to take more note of you. Call me for more news and astral advice...
On the back of last week’s New Moon, you can find yourself feeling really optimistic about the future. Yet Mercury squares up with Jupiter this week, so when it comes to money, it’s best to apply the mantra that if something sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Call for more advice...
Splashing out on a big ticket item might prove tempting this week, but then if you figure you can save money or time or make your life run more efficiently, you may decide it is worth it. You can also feel more attractive and draw a lot of admiration or goodness your way. Call for more news...
With your ruler Mercury in its last week of its current retrograde, and merging into a square with the bountiful Jupiter in your sign, if you promise or pledge something around a job, role or task, you will need to see it through, or else your credibility could suffer. Call for your in-depth forecast...
Mercury’s angle with Jupiter may see you tempted to brush someone off who wants to talk about a sensitive subject. Don’t! Even if you are reluctant to open up, there is much to be gained by sharing your true thoughts. By the week’s end, Mars can bring a much greater spark to bear. Call for more...
Someone may tell you something which they mean in good faith, but it mightn’t be true. Then again, someone’s exaggeration should be taken for what it is - wishful thinking. Your desire to expand your horizons shows no sign of diminishing. Call now for more news and astral advice...
Your mind continues to work overtime, but it could lead to a careless comment or something being said which you may later regret. You might also become a bit defensive if someone asks you a question you don’t like, or tries to pin you down about a touchy subject. Call me for more news...
Food Review: Chico-Chile 1 Orchard Square, Sheffield S1 Laura from meanmuncher.blogspot.com This week, I went rogue, becoming a bit like a gastronomic Jack Bauer: I took the brief (“to review restaurants”), spat on it, trod on it and brutally hurled it into the green recycling paper and cardboard compartment at work. Yep, I went wild. You see, instead of sauntering out one evening to a restaurant, to take pleasure in the service and the vibes, I decided to review Chico-Chile, a takeaway counter located at the bottom end of Orchard Square. This place has been around for ages; first called Pirates Pastys and presumably selling pasties, then called Pirates Pastys but selling Mexican chillis and wraps and finally, the owner told me to come back this week for the latest renaissance, where the name finally bears some resemblance to the product. You might call this place the Snoop Lion of the culinary world. I plumped for the Quorn chilli fajita (£4) and my friend took a diablo chicken burrito (£5). Now, Mexican purists might take issue with these dishes because ‘fajita’ generally refers to grilled slices of meat, served with cheese, onions and peppers, while burritos generally contain refried beans. However, my chilli fajita (wonderfully outlandish in itself) was stuffed with lovely fresh lettuce and wonderful crunchy pieces of tortilla chip - not traditional, exactly, but both welcome additions. The burrito was huge and was filled up with rice and (un-fried) kidney beans. We were so bewildered by the size of this wrap that we decided to place it on some postal scales, just to see how much weight we could expect to put on post-consumption. Impressively, it weighed in at just under three quarters of a kilogram. Just to put that into perspective, 750g is (possibly, sort of) the same weight as a 6-month-old unborn baby and using Royal Mail, it would cost £2.70 to post first class within the UK. Don’t do that though because I’ve heard that posting foetuses is not regarded as particularly PC. Now, where was I? Oh yes, at the takeaway counter. If you listen carefully, whilst waiting for your order, you will be sure to hear a gentle hum, followed by a distinctive “PING!” I feel I should mention this because some people will immediately and perhaps slightly snobbishly, dismiss these burritos as Subway-in-a-sombrero. You know what though? Even Heston has claimed that microwaves are the best way to cook some foods (fennel) and if you want your hot food in a matter of minutes, then short of a blowtorch, you’re going to have to suck it up. Just make sure you wait for 45 minutes before consuming, to let all the radiation settle down. Is £5 is a bit steep for a takeaway wrap in Sheffield? Not really. Because as you start to munch on this beast, you begin to wonder - much like the re-paving of the Moor - whether it will ever end. Unlike the re-paving of the Moor though, you really don’t want it to.

ABANDONED AND SILENT CALLS http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/2012/10/ abandoned-and-silent-calls/
The phone rings, you rush to answer but there’s no-one on the line. Abandoned and silent calls can be annoying and irritating at the best of times. But for some people – for example, those living alone – these calls can be particularly frightening. This guide explains more about these calls, what can cause them and what you can do about them.
can I do? If you are receiving abandoned or silent calls we recommend taking the following action:
Try and identify the caller: All companies using automated diallers should present a Calling Line Identification number on your telephone’s display, and allow you to obtain the caller’s telephone number by dialling 1471. Alternatively, the automated message from an abandoned call should disclose the name of the organisation and provide a number that you can call to opt-out of receiving further calls.

AFTER 125 YEARS, HAS JACK THE RIPPER BEEN IDENTIFIED AT LAST? In the Autumn of 1888, the Whitechapel area of London was gripped with fear when the world’s most infamous killer took to the streets. The case has fascinated millions of people for over a century and is recorded as unsolved... or is it? Most of the original evidence gathered at the time has now been lost and replaced with the ‘opinions and theories’ of film makers and writers. Alan Hancock is a Sheffield Police Officer who has been researching the case for over 3 years in his private time and believes that the killer has been identified at last. Alan has already delivered a number of presentations to community groups, where he has revealed the results of his research, including some remarkable evidence that he believes identifies the killer. Due to the vast amount of research and content, Alan has devised the presentation in such a way that it can be delivered in its entirety in a one-off event, or split into 2 parts should groups have restricted times. There is a charge for the presentation. Enquiries to: Alan Hancock. Telephone: 07917 198393. Email: point7project@gmail.com
SHEFFIELD STRATEGIC HOUSING MARKET ASSESSMENT Sheffield City Council is currently working with the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University to do a Strategic Housing Market Assessment for Sheffield. This is a research project designed to gather lots of information about the housing market in Sheffield. As part of this research, we are sending out a survey to 18,000 randomly selected households across the city, to find out about their housing circumstances. We will also be holding a number of interviews and focus groups with different household groups and housing stakeholders, such as students, city centre residents, private landlords, estate agents and developers. The survey is being sent out this month and needs to be returned by the 27th March 2013. Please encourage your customers to return this survey and equally if you or your family/ friends receive the survey please spare the time to complete it. It is important that we hear the views of Sheffield’s residents so that we can make sure housing meets the needs of households in the future. For more information, please contact Rachael McGown at rachael.mcgown@sheffield.gov.uk or on (0114) 2736396.

BACK TO THE 40s A Salute to the 1940's will be playing at the Majestic Theatre in Retford this weekend, March 9th 2.30pm and as well as the regular artistes performing, Vera Lynn, George Formby, Gracie Fields, Andrews Sisters and Warden Braithwaite, Gary Birtles, the producer is delighted to introduce a couple of new faces to the team. Guest tributes will be G.I Frank Sinatra and Andy Eastwood, who as well as performing the hits of George Formby, will be serenading everyone with his tribute to Arthur Askey. Gary, producer of Groovy Gazza Productions, says 'We are over the moon to get Andy and Tony Martin (Frank Sinatra) into the show, it's such a strong line up anyway, but to get the extra is a big bonus.' The show has been performing all over the country and several shows have sold out. “At Market Drayton we sold out within weeks and had to add an extra performance in the evening, the crowd have really been getting behind the show and we have some who follow us round the country, they are like an extension to the company because many of them come in 1940's costume”, Gary adds. This will be the shows 4th year and in June they will be making their 3rd appearance in the Sheffield

We have had ex servicemen who fought in the war and they come wearing their medals with pride, which is great to see. One gentleman who often comes to see the show was a bomber pilot for 3 yrs”. STROKE OF GOOD FORTUNE PUTS YOUNGSTERS IN THE SWIM Free swimming lessons are being offered to hundreds of young disabled and disadvantaged children in Sheffield thanks to a £10,000 funding grant. The Awards for All Fund has been granted to the Help a Child Have a Chance charity, which is working in partnership with Sheffield International Venues (SIV) to improve the lives of children and families in the city. The money will be spent on 130 one-to-one swimming lessons as well as exclusive family swim pool parties at SIV’s Hillsborough Leisure Centre. Rebecca Kilner, trustee of the Help a Child Have a Chance charity, said: “We know there are many children in Sheffield who are isolated or excluded, and through the charity we are working to provide them with positive activities that will improve their health, confidence and self-esteem. “The swimming lessons are a great opportunity for children to get involved in a healthy physical activity at a fantastic venue. They are also a chance for families to get together and have a deserved break.” The family swim pool parties begin on Saturday, March 30, and will take place every two months for a year. Rebecca added: “It’s so important for disabled and vulnerable children to have an opportunity to learn to swim in an environment that is complementary to their specific needs. “The sessions at Hillsborough Leisure Centre will allow them to integrate into mainstream sessions, helping to develop physical and cognitive skills and, importantly, their confidence.” Help a Child Have a Chance charity was set up in 2009 and supports sick, needy and disadvantaged children throughout South Yorkshire. It is run by the family of the late Hallam FM DJ Dave Kilner, who raised thousands for charity and trustees Eamonn Hunt and Martina Bradshaw. Tim Hicks, general manager at Hillsborough Leisure Centre, said: “SIV has always been committed to improving the health of the community, and the latest funding will have a very positive effect on many young people’s lives. “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Help a Child Have a Chance to help children in Sheffield who need it the most. “SIV has supported local groups and charities with much success over the years, and we’re passionate about providing sports opportunities to the city’s younger generation – especially to those from disadvantaged backgrounds.” For information or to support the charity visit http://helpachildhaveachance.co.uk and to apply for the swimming lessons, email info@ helpachildhaveachance.co.uk.

MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
It’s always a pleasure to welcome some big names through the doors. Just last week the famous Baldrick from Blackadder was on with me at Breakfast time, actor and historian Tony Robinson. This week I’m going to be joined by the lovely Sarah Beeny, property expert and presenter of a variety of TV shows such as Property Ladder, Help my house is falling down, Village SOS and Restoration Nightmare which followed her own story as she and her husband Graham bought the Grade 2 listed Rise Hall in East Yorkshire. They ran into a fair few many problems both in the building works and with the pressure on their own family life. Thankfully that’s all well documented and behind them now. Rise Hall has become a fully functioning home and plays host to a variety of public events too. Sarah will talking about her own interesting upbringing which literally saw her living off the land, and about what inspired her to enter the property market at a very young age. Added to that, join me when you wake up for competitions and prizes, details of what’s going on and just great songs in the morning! It’s all here on Magic AM Breakfast. See you then Trevor

live REVIEW
Words by KT Evans
Although still within the early months of a brand new year, few could argue Deftones aren’t in contention for the best tour of 2013. Combining together sold out UK and European shows alongside freshly releasing their enormous seventh album “Koi No Yokan” in November 2012, the five piece have safeguarded themselves as the best rock band in the world at the moment. Purely instrumental and absurdly abstract, London’s Three Trapped Tigers were a solid first support for the night, however their performance was whole heartedly overshadowed by chief headline support Letlive. Beating the hell out of their half hour long set, lead vocalist Jason Butler made like Tarzan to scale the venue’s top balcony (cue a frenzy of security guards in full preparation for a savagely broken leg) sound tracked by the group’s 2010 smasher “Fake History.” New single “27 Club” is fiery as it is subdued, something which letlive do with tremendous ease. With their new album set for release in early summer, if their most recent single is anything to go by, we suggest you buckle up for the release of the year. Opening up with “Diamond Eyes”, title track off the Californians sixth studio album, Deftones mammoth power whilst on stage smacked us all square in the face. They fail not to reach out to each and every person who came out and bought a ticket to one of the most anticipated shows of the year, an indication of the timeless nature the group harbour. Their set comprised of tracks both from album one to album six...”Nosebleed” off the groups 1995 debut album stood as proudly as “Koi No Yokan” belter “Swerve City,” proving not only that Deftones have moved with the times, but have also stuck to their guns and remained truthful to their authentically original style. Other tracks “Rosemary,” “Sextape” and “Tempest” followed, all of which indicated one strikingly obvious point…Deftones are the ultimate God Fathers of metal. Hell they come on stage in their shirts and smart trousers, looking all “trendy uncleesque,” however the full frontal blow each and every hit delivered goes to show how much the group personify all that is world class alternative metal. It’s hard to dispute the fact that even though Deftones might not be the most cutting edge of bands to have ever walked the infamous stages of rock, ultimately…they are the backbone.

THE LAST CARNVIAL THE PLUG 09/03.12
Clothing, Footwear, Jewellery... A Little Bit of Everything
Open 10-6 monday-saturday _ 11-5 Sunday
Words by KT Evans
Having been described as the “new breed of rock and roll,” The Last Carnival are unlike your traditional up-and-coming British group. Armed with a collection of enormous songs, including their brand new EP “Falling for Luisa” out on 13th March, this suited and booted five piece guarantee to bring a belter of a live show when they play at Sheffield’s Plug on 9th March. A mash up between Little Richard, Beach Boys, Van Halen, Bowie and The Rolling Stones, The Last Carnival are riding the wide of successful British talent. Although with references to each of thieer favourite bands intertwined within tracks off the groups back catalogue, the band have their own unique take on creating explosive live music. Front man and songwriter Russsell James Williams has the ability to not only shred the hell out of a guitar but also compose tracks which stick around way longer than their running time. Hits “It’s the Fall I’m Living For” and “Luisa Rey” have both bouncy chorus lines verses sleek melodies, something which the group combine together effortlessly. Other members of the group include drummer Adam, mike on bass, keyboardist Kieran and Justin on guitar. The result of being close friends has clearly been played to the bands advantage…throughout each track its evident how effectively all members work together. Unlike some groups who can become patchy and disconnected, The Last Carnival work in sync to create a final outcome which is ridiculously catchy and overly listenable. With their debut album released later this year, recorded with renowned London engineer Jay Reynolds and mastered by Pete Maher (U2/The Killers/Snow Patrol), 2013 promises to be their biggest year yet. Two national headline tours across the UK and Ireland in 2012 saw them grace the stage at such prestigious venues as the world famous Cavern Club, Liverpool, O2 ABC Glasgow, O2 Academy London, Academy Dublin, Academy Manchester and many more. The ‘Carnie-Army’ – their ever-growing loyal fan base – has even more to look forward to with tours booked throughout the coming months. Tickets are on sale now at www.thelastcarnival.co.uk for their show at Sheffield’s Plug on 9th March.

round-up by stuart renton
More British tat finds its way abroad this week, for hideous lower than low-brow “talent” show Splash has been picked up by pretty much most of Europe. That means we’re not only inflicting chavs on the rest of the world but those poor sods have to endure our TV crap as well. This doesn’t look good for the future of Saturday night television. And speaking of Saturday night TV, soulless media mogul, Simon Cowell has narrowed down his search for the next X Factor judge to a wrinkled crone with all the warmth and personality of Anthrax (Sharon Osborne) and Mel B. Personally, there’s no contest – if I wanted to watch a stretched to bursting soulless hag on the telly - I’d watch Anne Robinson, but the thought of that harpy, Osborne, back on our screens turns me off faster than a fat bird covered in Oreos screaming: EAT ME!!! It’s not the trying to look sixteen that bothers me about Sharon Osborne. It’s the fact the woman literally has two faces. Literally. You only have to look into the wrinkled pits of her eyes to see the screaming harridan just dying to say what she really thinks but is terrified of the ratings (what will the children think…? she wails to Piers Morgan). This is a woman whose face has been stretched so many times she needs to get major scaffolding company, Totty, in to handle the Botox injections (it’s not the only time she needs help with an erection but she can handle her own column in her own time). There aren’t many celebs that fill me with as much revulsion (apart from Katie Price, Peter Andre, all

the cast of TOWIE, and several hundred others which I really need to get around to cataloguing) but the Shazbot takes the cake. I always imagine her to peel off her face after a show, and I don’t mean the many layers of cement-like make-up (that could easily deflect a nuclear missile), I mean she literally tears off her face to reveal the demonic visage within as she smears herself with the juices of a few hand-picked altar boys. Which, in no contrived way, brings me neatly to the Catholic church which is in the news again, and this time the holier than thou, Cardinal Keith O’Brien faces inquiry over misconduct, which, translated means: one, that everyone knew about it, and two, that it’s inevitably going to involve some kind of sex. It seems corruption and the church go hand in hand (as they leave the vestry and skip gaily into the bedroom). I imagine forbidden sex in the Catholic church is like an episode of the Vampire Diaries. You see it and you don’t want to look, and you try really hard to look away, but no matter how hard you resist, eventually your eyes fall back on it and after a few seconds, you’re plunged deep into a black hole from which there’s no release (for about forty five minutes). You know trouble will follow and you feel ashamed and dirty afterwards but you just can’t stop yourself as it feels sooo good! And once you’ve done it once… So, my wish this week is that Simon Cowell makes the right decision and cancels X Factor entirely… I mean chooses Mel B over the shrill two faced demon-harpy. Mind you, the show’s on its last legs and abuses its contestants beyond imagination. Any shred of integrity stretched it once had has been stretched beyond all recognition. Actually, that sounds like a perfect fit for Sharon Osborne.

angler’s corner by Clint Walker
After my rant last week, I mentioned that I had met an elderly gentleman worth telling you about. I often spend time mooching around my local tackle shop to catch up with the gossip, see what is new on the scene and who is catching what, and last week was no different. Whilst I was chatting and browsing, an elderly chap was looking at item of tackle I’d previously used and struggled with, so I offered my opinion and we discussed an alternative which he then subsequently purchased. My good deed for the day.....so I expected some karma! I wasn’t to be disappointed...... As I returned to my van after the visit, the chap followed me out the shop and we got chatting as fellow anglers do. Stan was 70 odd years old, a lifelong angler and proceeded to regale me with tales of cane rods, bent pins the gudgeon of his youth before continuing onto to stories of monster bream and perch (a favourite of us both it seemed) and the present state of angling. Despite a biting wind and freezing weather, we stood debating for almost half an hour before the extremes became too much, but during those thirty minutes, I learned much about Stan’s angling, his aching body, his failing eyesight and his passion for his hobby....more importantly, I enjoyed every second of talking to a chap with no agenda, no cynicism with just a healthy obsession with fishing and a desire to compare ideas without any inkling of one-upmanship. It was truly a breath of fresh air and I drove home with a smile on my face; meeting anglers like Stan are just one of the things I enjoy about fishing,

so if you ever read this Stan, thanks very much for sharing those thirty minutes with me! This week’s trip to the bank has been once more to Shardlow Marina, a venue full of big predators, plump roach and hard fighting barbel and chub. The weather was bitter again (about time we had some sun) bright sunshine, and the water was frozen with cat ice for the first two hours and it promised to be a difficult trip. I intended to fish the ‘tip hoping for a decent perch or two, but after three hours of casting every twenty minutes, I’d had little more than a couple of ‘knocks’ to show for it; certainly no fish! There were other anglers present, all biteless, so it wasn’t just me who was struggling! I did eventually end up catching; after balling in some groundbait, I attracted a shoal of silvery dace and the odd bigger perch, but it was the first time I’d really encountered the beautiful dace so after failing to hit lightening fast bites for about an hour, I finally got my first one in the net! After sorting my rig to give me the best possible indication, it was a delight to put together a net of these pretty fish as I’d not really fished for them before, but, on the day, I was grateful for them! If you have never caught one, go and give your river ago before the season ends...be quick though, because dace are!

racing form by Timelord
This Saturday’s TV cards come from Sandown and Wolverhampton with the feature race being the Paddy Power Imperial Cup at Sandown. Wolverhampton offers a Listed race and a Lincoln Trial Handicap on the All Weather surface. There is usually a big bonus on offer for the winner of the Imperial Cup, if it can go on to win at the Cheltenham Festival. Sandown: 2.05 EBF Paddypower.com “National Hunt” Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Final, Grade 3, 4-7yo, 2m 4f: I Shot the Sheriff (178), God’s Own (165), Close Touch (138), Utopian (120) and Special Catch (119) head my ratings table. The one that appeals most is Nicky Henderson’s Close Touch who has the best last time out rating of these and looks to be in good form. The reserves’ order is: I Shot the Sheriff; God’s Own; Utopian; Special Catch. 2.40 Download the Paddy Power App Handicap Chase, Class 3, 5yo+, 0-135, 3m 110yds: Fine Parchment looks to be on the way back and gets the nod to land this open affair. Next best look to be (in order): Qianshan Leader; Riguez Dancer; King Fontaine; Inside Dealer; Three Chords; Lively Baron; and Goring One. 3.15 Paddy Power Imperial Cup (Handicap Hurdle), Listed, 4yo+, 2m 110yds: Philip Hobbs’ Thunderstorm is going for a six-timer here and cannot fail to be in the reckoning somewhere. His best performance in my system came from when beating Beyeh by a neck at Market Rasen the time before last. However Beyeh did nothing to advertise that form when finishing down the field at Doncaster last weekend (after I had tipped it in this column). That performance tempers enthusiasm for the chances of Thunderstorm here. Instead I prefer the chances of last year’s winner Paintball, Claret Cloak, Barizan, Le Bacardy, Pine Creek, Tominator and Changing the Guard. In a tight call Paintball gets the nod to score second victory in the race. First reserve place goes to Pine Creek followed by Changing the Guard, Le Bacardy, Claret Cloak and Thunderstorm. 3.50 EBF/DBS Mares’ Standard Open National Hunt Race, Listed, 4-7yo, 2m 110yds: Definitely Glad has my top and best last time out ratings and gets the selection to score. Next best may be Calibre Style followed by Centasia, Supreme Quest, Carole’s Spirit and Our Pollyanna although there are plenty of other candidates (a few of whom are unbeaten) in a wide open event. Wolverhampton: 2.20 Williamhill.com EBF Lady Wulfruna Stakes, Listed, 4yo+, 7f 32yds: This looks to be an extremely tightly-knit contest with several of the runners coming within a point or two in my system from their last time out runs - and there is not much between them on lifetime best figures either. The nod goes to Marco Botti’s Grey Mirage who has the best last time out rating by a couple of points over Docofthebay with Light from Mars being a point adrift of the second best and Kickingthelilly being a further point adrift. Chapter and Verse could also be dangerous, having the lifetime best rating and a decent last time out figure. 2.55 William Hill Lincoln Trial Handicap, Class 2, 4yo+, 0-105, 1m 141yds: If Clive Brittain’s Miblish turns out for this he gets a relatively confident vote to score after his second to Planteur last time out in the Listed Lingfield Winter Derby Trial. That race was run in a cracking time and resulted in a career best performance from Miblish in my estimation. If there is a doubt it is his relatively meagre wins to runs ratio and whether he will be as good second time out since he seems to run very well when fresh. If he doesn’t show the reserves are (in order): Nazreef; Strictly Silver; Loyalty; Memory Cloth; and Laffan. With Cheltenham starting next Tuesday I have had a quick look at the entries for the first two days. It is very difficult indeed to pick winners at these big meetings where all will be trying their hardest and a few surprises could be in the offing from unexposed horses. I have therefore suggested some possible value each way bets at longer odds on horses that could run well. I have shown the current best price available alongside the horse’s name. The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle looks a tough race to crack. Ten of the possible runners have either won their last two races or have won a Graded race last time out. The Irish runners look to be quite formidable - Willie Muliins’ Champagne Fever won the Festival Bumper last year and

seems to like the place; Jessie Harrington’s Jezki has done nothing but improve this year; and Mullins’ Annie Power is unbeaten and receives the mares’ allowance that could make her hard to beat. However, I have suggested Dermot Weld’s Rock Critic who is also unbeaten and although he has a little to find could prove to be up to doing so. I also like Melodic Rendezvous who beat Puffin Billy by nine lengths at Exeter and could be up to winning this. In the Arkle Novices’ Chase Simonsig has a good chance but, at a best price of 4/6 currently, is too short in the betting in my view. Captain Conan at 12/1 is better value in my opinion as are: Overturn (11/4); Majala (33/1); Module 33/1; Twinlight (40/1); and my top rated Baily Green (33/1). The 2.40 handicap looks wide open but Deal Done carries my top rating and could run well at a big price (33/1). For the 5.15 novices’ handicap The Cockney Mackem could go well at 20/1. It looks as though Hurricane Fly should win the Champion Hurdle as Willie Mullins seems to have him back at his best this year. The current 2/1 about him is reasonable. For the 4.40 on Tuesday Quevega should win as she seems to be a “standing dish” at this meeting. However her current best price of 1/2 is very skinny indeed given that they can all have an off-day, get brought down or fall. I have therefore suggested an each way chance on Alasi (16/1). On Wednesday Sprinter Sacre ought to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase but again is at a very short price (2/9) so I have suggested an each way shot on Realt Dubh at a reasonable 25/1. Tuesday: 1.30 Rock Critic – 25/1, one point each way 2.05 Baily Green – 33/1, one point each way 2.40 Deal Done – 33/1, one point each way 3.20 Hurricane Fly – 2/1, 2 points win 4.00 Backstage – 16/1 one point each way 4.40 Alasi – 16/1 one point each way 5.15 The Cockney Mackem – 20/1 one point each way Wednesday (to be updated next week): 1.30 Buddy Bolero – 8/1 one point each way 2.05 Cause of Causes – 20/1 one point each way 2.40 Mikael D’Haguenet – 25/1 one point each way 3.20 Realt Dubh – 25/1 one point each way 4.00 Nagpur – 50/1 one point each way 4.40 Habesh – 33/1 one point each way 5.15 Sgt Reckless – 16/1 one point each way. Saturday selection Summary: (In case of absences reserves are shown in order of preference after the selection) Sandown: 2.05 Close Touch, if absent I Shot the Sheriff then God’s Own, Utopian, Special Catch 2.40 Fine Parchment, if absent Qianshan Leader then Riguez Dancer, King Fontaine, Inside Dealer 3.15 Paintball, if absent Pine Creek, Changing the Guard, Le Bacardy, Claret Cloak, Thunderstorm 3.50 Definitely Glad, if absent Calibre Style, Centasia, Supreme Quest, Carole’s Spirit, Our Pollyanna Wolverhampton: 2.20 Grey Mirage, if absent Docofthebay then Light from Mars, Kickingthelilly, Chapter and Verse 2.55 Miblish, if absent Nazreef then Strictly Silver, Loyalty, Memory Cloth, Laffan.

Millers & Rovers News 2012-13
ALL SQUARE AGAINST SHRIMPS Rotherham United left it late once again to salvage a point thanks to captain Johnny Mullins’ second goal of the season in a Millers shirt. The defender eventually connected with Noble’s cross to save the game after a Kevan Hurst wonder strike had put the hosts ahead. Manager Steve Evans made made two changes to the side that drew with York City in the week, as Michael O’Connor and Ben Pringle returned to the side in place of Mark Bradley and Kieran Agard. Meanwhile, Daniel Nardiello, declared doubtful by the Millers boss in the week made the starting 11. And it was the former Welsh international who had the first real opportunity of the game, connecting with Pringle’s cross only to see his goalbound header palmed over the bar by Paul Smith. David Noble, playing as part of a two-man sitting midfield with the returning O’Connor then tried his luck 11 minutes in, but despite the swerve on the ball saw his effort held by Smith. The visitors were on top, but Southend’s first real attack, twice saw them go close. Instigated by a drag-back by Bilel Mohsni, the home side broke down the left and when Sheffield Wednesday loanee Danny Mayor got his shot away from the edge of the box it was deflected narrowly wide. From Kevan Hurts’s resulting corner, Matthew Lund found himself in acres of space at the front post but couldn’t get his effort on target. After the lively start, which also saw two players booked, Claude Davis for handball and Matthew Lund for bringing down O’Connor, both sides relaxed and the game suffered a lull. With the first-half being played out with a lack of action, it was no surprise that
the last real chance of the half came from a mistake. O’Connor was dispossessed by Mohsni on halfway whose through ball to Britt Assombalonga put the striker one-on-one with Davis. When he eventually got a shot away, he was denied by Andy Warrington who made a stunning save low to his left. Both sides began with the second-half with the same personnel but it was the hosts who started better. Mohsni capitalised on Davis’ missed backheel but could only fire over, and then Assombalonga continued to be frustrated by Warrington as his header from close range was parried by the Millers stopper. The home side’s pressure continued and another Ryan Leonard long throw wasn’t cleared, leading to Mayor again trying his luck, but the midfielder was again off target. The action dipped once again as the Millers put up a firm resistance and it wasn’t until after the hour mark that either side looked like breaking the deadlock. Pringle fed Nardiello with a lovely through ball but the striker was denied by Sean Clohessy just as he was about to pull the trigger. Moments later O’Connor hit a free-kick which was saved well by Smith. The scoresheet was finally marked on 73 minutes and in stunning style through Hurst. Mayor got on the ball wide on the left and poked the ball inside for the winger-turnedmidfielder who dug out a shot from 25 yards into the top corner which left Warrington with no chance. Moments later Leonard tired a spectacular overhead kick after the Millers failed to clear Hurst’s cross but he was off target from the angle. The Millers introduced Jordan Slew with their final change, switching to three at the back and it was one of those three who salvaged the point. Noble’s teasing cross was missed by everyone and the Millers skipper eventually bundled the ball over the line at the far post at the third time of asking.
ROVERS EARN POINT IN TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH It was a top six clash at the Keepmoat on Saturday as the leaders came up against the team in thied place, Yeovil arriving on the back of a terrific run of form. In Division One’s game of the week Yeovil got the game underway and won a corner in the third minute. This was cleared out to Coppinger, who linked with Cotterill to put Paynter in on goal but he was tackled and lost out. In the 6th minute Spurr was penalised in an aerial challenge on the Rovers left touchline. The free kick was played to the far post where Woods, seeing it late because of the mass of bodies in front of him dived and parried the ball back into play. MADDEN, from two yards, hammered it into the roof of the net. The Rovers won a corner but nothing came from it then, in the 14th minute, a good attack from the home team gave Paynter a shot from 15yards that Stech tipped over the bar. From the Rovers corner the visitors’ broke away but only won a corner. In the 20th minute, good play down the Rovers right ended with Coppinger, just inside the penalty area, firing at goal but Stech caught the ball well. Two minutes later Burn, for Yeovil, had a go from 35yards but put well wide. This was followed by Cotterill, on the Rovers right, spotting Stech off his line and trying his luck from 45 yards but the keeper got back to catch the ball. The Rovers were trying hard but found a resolute defence in front of them. However, they pressed on and as time ran down they got their reward. In the 45th minute Husband got to the left byline and crossed for Paynter to head in but he headed the ball down for it bounce up against the bar, with Coppinger heading the rebound over the bar. Into added time and Husband hit a searing drive from the edge of the penalty area that Stech, diving full length to his left, pushed out for a corner. Cotterill put over the corner and PAYNTER, with a bullet header, levelled the score. The Rovers came out for the second half and played some good football for the first five minutes but got no reward. Then Upson, for the visitors, collected

STOP FEELING SORRY FOR YOURSELF SAYS FINNERTY The Sheffield Steelers hit the road again this weekend as they try and brush off the blues, or that is how head coach Ryan Finnerty see’s it. “Anyone watching us can see that we are a different team right now to that side that won 8 straight a few weeks ago. It seems that since the loss in Nottingham some of the guys heads have dropped. They perhaps see the league title is out of our hands and they are feeling sorry for themselves. They have to snap out of it very quickly, we still have a lot to play off, there is the cup and the play offs “We are also the Sheffield Steelers. This club expects the best professionals, expects them to show up every night and fight for their team and team mates. When you come and sign for this club there are lots of benefits. There are also lots of pressures. The fans, the owners, the sponsors, the mdi a all expect you to win every night. The spotlight is on you. Some guys love that spotlight when things are going well, but then don’t like it when things turn on us. “Not one person is feeling any sympathy for us I can assure you. We will go into a packed Nottingham and on Saturday and if we aren’t ready, if we are still feeling down in the dumps we will get punished. However if we man up, prepare properly and give Nottingham our best shot then I am confident we can take the points from the Panthers and maybe give the title advantage to Belfast “I learn’t as a player that there is no hiding place, especially in Nottingham and Cardiff where we will be this weekend. I understand that they were all distraught after the Nottingham game. I was too. I can understand there frustration but that can’t linger. That can’t remain with you. I can’t nurse you, I’m going to have to make you responsible and accountable and that’s what I will do. I will learn a lot about my players in the next couple of weeks. “I can see us turning it around though. We have the ability to win both these games this weekend. We have to take momentum, start the build up for the play off.’s. It’s time to stop feeling sorry for ourselves and start to feel sorry for those who we are playing by punishing and beating them”
the ball on the halfway line, took it to the edge of the penalty area and fired wide. In the 58th minute Cotterill put a free kick to the far post where Spurr lifted it back to the middle but Jones headed over the bar. Past the hour and after a lengthy spell of possession for Yeovil Williams had a go from 25 yards but put wide. A corner shortly afterwards to the visitors’ was hit high over the bar from 20 yards by Madden. Then, in the 65th minute, Cotterill won a corner, put it to the middle where Jones headed it down and Coppinger put an overhead kick wide. A poor backpass to Woods in the 70th minute led to a race for the ball between Woods and Williams. The Yeovil man won but poked the ball wide of the post. Then a few minutes later and Lundstram had a twenty-five yarder saved. Hume, from the right, put wide of the far post and at the other end McAllister put over the bar from a free kick followed minutes later by Williams doing similarly. The Rovers pressed hard for a winner but Cotterill fired over from the angle of the penalty area on the right. Six minutes of added time couldn’t produce a winner for either side so the referee blew the whistle on a fiercely contested and equal battle.

ENGLAND WOMEN HEAD TO NEW YORK England Women’s return to the Sheffield & Hallamshire CFA region to take on Canada at Rotherham United’s impressive New York Stadium, on Sunday 7 April – 3pm kick-off. International stars Sophie Bradley (left) and Jill Scott (centre), who are pictured with Sheffield & Hallamshire CFA’s Gemma Gale at the stadium, have been in the town promoting the fixture and delighted pupils at Ferham Primary School and Thornhill Primary School by paying them a visit. The two players, who have over 70 international caps between them and were named in the 2013 Club England Team of the Year, where they were met with huge cheers from the school children as they took part in coaching sessions and joined assemblies for question and answer sessions. Both Scott and Bradley hope the children will be inspired to come along and cheer them on when they meet the Olympic bronze medalists in what promises to be a thrilling match. Scott, who was part of the Team GB squad at the 2012 Olympics, said: “We are really excited to be playing an International match at New York Stadium for the first time. It’s been great to come up to the stadium today, as well as meet some of the local school kids. Facing Canada is a really important warm up match as we prepare for the Euros and we are hoping that the fans in and around Rotherham will really get behind us.” The fixture, which will form part of the #FA150 celebrations marking the milestone anniversary of The FA, is part of two tough home internationals as Hope Powell prepares her England side for Euro 2013. The Three Lionesses will also play World Cup holders and Olympic silver medallists Japan on Wednesday 26 June. It is the first time that a Women’s International has come to Rotherham United and the Lionesses are hoping that the region’s avid football fans will come out in force to get behind the team. With a family ticket (two adults and two children) costing only £10, this sporting occasion offers a perfect opportunity to experience top-class women’s International football at an affordable price, right on the doorstep. The Millers Chairman Tony Stewart said: “We feel privileged that The FA has granted Rotherham United the opportunity to host this international fixture against Canada. It is a fantastic opportunity to use New York Stadium as a setting to showcase the best of women’s football.” There will also be lots of free fun and games for fans to enjoy before the match, which will take place outside the stadium from 1.30pm. Tickets are available via ticket hotline 08444 140737, at the Red and White Shop and online at www.rotherhamunitedshop.co.uk

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2 12-13 BLADES MAINTAIN MOMENTUM MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk The Blades gave a solid and competent performance to ensure that Danny Wilson celebrated his 100th game in charge with a win. Second half goals from Michael Doyle and Dave Kitson were enough to beat Oldham on their own patch as the Blades chalked up a fifth clean sheet on the bounce. A travelling contingent of 2,591 packed into the away end at Boundary Park and were singing at the final whistle as three more vital points were added to the tally. There was no Higginbotham on the United teamsheet, Hill stepped up from the bench to take over at left-back and Whitehouse was added to the list of substitutes. Former Blade’s apprentice Brown was named in the Oldham team. Robson began in a central role but it was his strike partner, Kitson, who made the first impact, charging and causing problems for goalkeeper Cisak inside the first 60 seconds. Oldham’s front two, Smith and Baxter, both had sights of goal, whilst for the visitors, Doyle’s effort hit Robson and drifted wide. In between a number of hefty challenges, the first committed by Croft, the goalscoring opportunities continued. Wesolowski and Simpson had efforts blocked after a period of nervous defending, whilst United’s chances fell to defenders McMahon curling a free-kick just wide, Collins having an effort kicked away and Maguire heading over a Robson corner. Smith was appealing for a penalty in an aerial challenge but the offside flag had already been raised, whilst Baxter curled a free-kick over the crossbar after a couple of decisions went Oldham’s way in quick succession. Doyle followed M’Voto into the referee’s book and before the break the Blades created two more chances, again falling to defenders. Maguire got on the end of a Robson free-kick but could not get enough purchase, allowing Cisak to turn the ball around the post, and McMahon linked up well with Flynn before the right-back’s powerful shot was deflected over by Tarkowski. In first half injurytime, however, Oldham came very close to taking the lead but Baxter’s shot from 20 yards was just over Long’s crossbar. A slow and messy start to the second half
prevented either side from gaining any real momentum but as the sun began to shine on the Unitedites, a mistake was capitalised upon by the visitors. With 57 minutes gone, Tarkowski dallied in possession and was robbed by Poleon, who cut in from the right and saw his shot blocked by the body of goalkeeper Cisak. But DOYLE raced onto the loose ball and found the target with a controlled effort, which found the target with the aid of a post. Poleon’s pace almost brought United a quick second when he got the better of Brown but the loanee’s finish was rushed, whilst the home side’s first chance of the second period arrived on the hour but Maguire kicked away Wesolowski’s shot. On 68 minutes there were big shouts for a penalty when Oldham fans believed Hill pushed Simpson away from Obita’s cross, whilst the cramp suffered by Poleon, who was replaced by McFadzean, also appeared to upset the home supporters. McDonald was booked for hauling back Baxter, whilst Oldham went close again when Smith’s header from a Croft cross flew just past Long’s left post on 75 minutes. Oldham introduced more attacking power with Iwelumo coming off the bench but Smith’s shot on the turn was pushed away by Long, who recovered to kick away the rebound. The Blades also had further chances, namely two Maguire headers, the second of which needed to be pushed away by Cisak. The Blades sealed the points with moments remaining. McMahon delivered a free-kick from the halfway line and Cisak wandered off his line but was beaten in the air by KITSON who headed home from around 15 yards. The goalscorer celebrated with the Blades fans and was lost amongst them for a spell, earning himself a booking when he returned to the playing area. Late on Long palmed away a Smith shot to protect his clean sheet and Doyle went close to make it three but his volley was parried away by Cisak but soon the final whistle was greeted with the sounds of ‘one Danny Wilson’ from the Blades fans who had made the trip across the Pennines.
DEFENCE EARNS PRAISE GAFFERS NOTES www.sufc.co.uk
Danny Wilson says the current six match unbeaten is largely down to tightening up defensively. United have won five and drawn one of the last half dozen, keeping five clean sheets in the process, and Wilson says everyone deserves their share of the credit. Speaking after Saturday’s 2-0 win over Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park, the Blades fourth consecutive away success, the Gaffer commented: “There have been a lot of excellent teams over the years that have made sure one goal is often enough to win a game. “If you aren’t conceding you give yourself a real sound base to build on and we have real sharpened up at the other end too. We had added that bit of extra quality in the final third and thankfully that is proving to be the difference. “Our defensive work has been exceptional in the last month or so and that has given us the platform to go on this unbeaten run. We have a fantastic work ethic to defend from the front and when we are at our best we are extremely difficult to breakdown.” The Blades boss, who hopes to have Jamie Murphy and Jonathan Forte available to face the MK Dons on Saturday, says he is thinking about nothing apart from the next game. Wilson concluded: “We need to set our stall out to win every game, we don’t know when the next twist will come, but if we keep winning we won’t go far wrong. “I am solely focused on what we are doing and thankfully we should have a couple of extra bodies available again next week.”

Sheffield Wednesday News 2012-13
SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 12-13 REVIVAL CUT SHORT MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk
Wednesday suffered a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Saturday evening kick off at Hillsborough. Dangerman Radoslaw Majewski scored the game’s only goal in the first half – his fifth goal in Forest’s last three games. The visitors turned in an impressive performance at Hillsborough and were good value for their victory. The Owls went into the live televised clash in excellent form looking to extend their unbeaten run in the Championship to eight straight games. Forest, though, were also in the middle of a purple patch of their own which had been spurred on by the return of boss Billy Davies to The City Ground. The visitors had collected seven points from a possible nine prior to the fixture at Hillsborough – which made for an interesting game on paper in S6. It was Forest who started the game on the front foot. Dexter Blackstock had an early shot at goal which Chris Kirkland comfortably dealt with after some neat build-up play before Connor Wickham tested Karl Darlow with a looping header moments later. Andy Reid’s in-swinging free kick from the right dangerously bounced the wrong side of the far post before Forest had the ball in the back of the net on 25 minutes. Reid’s delivery picked out Blackstock, who delicately headed past Kirkland into the back of the net but the linesman’s flag was raised to rule out the goal. But in Forest’s very next attack, they did find the breakthrough. Simon Cox jinked his way past a number of challenges in the area before squaring to Majewski who slotted home from six yards. Things could have got worse for the Owls on 27 minutes when Chris Cohen raced down the left flank before delivering a
dangerous low centre that just evaded Blackstock in the middle, as Anthony Gardner made a vital interception. The visitors continued on in the ascendancy as Wednesday struggled to get into their stride. Cox then flashed a low strike inches past the far post after smart build-up play from the Reds. Jeremy Helan looked to provide an outlet with a pacey burst forward but his low cross was cleared behind for a corner as Forest finished the half strongly. Dave Jones made one change for the second half with Jermaine Johnson replacing Wickham in the Owls attack. Forest began the second period stongly as Majewski’s curled attempt seemed destined to hit the target but was well blocked by Gardner. Michail Antonio did well at the other end to fashion a chance in front of goal but blazed over before Majewski dragged his strike wide of the near post. David Prutton then saw his half volley from 20 yards blocked out in the area by a sea of Forest defenders as Wednesday pressed to find a way back into the game. The Owls had to up the ante in order to find the equaliser and Lita almost found a way through but Darlow made a key save from the striker’s low header. Spurred on by over 20,000 Wednesday fans, the Owls threw everything at Forest in the late exchanges to get back level but the visitors stood strong to claim all three points. Owls: Kirkland, Buxton, Gardner, Llera, Pugh (Lee 66), Antonio, Coke, Prutton (Madine 78), Helan, Lita, Wickham (Johnson 46) Unused substitutes: Bywater, Taylor, Semedo, McCabe Forest: Darlow, Collins (Lascelles 81), Guedioura, Cohen, Reid, Cox (Sharp 77), Lansbury, Blackstock, Majewski (Moussi 73), Ward, Reyes Unused substitutes: Evtimov, McGugan, Greening, McLaughlin
LADY LUCK MISSING ON SATURDAY OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
The Owls lacked that little bit of luck against Nottingham Forest that can make all the difference, according to Dave Jones. Wednesday counted themselves unfortunate to take nothing from the live TV game and on another day might have had a penalty and in turn a potential share of the spoils. But two contentious handball decisions went the way of the visitors, who emerged triumphant through Radoslaw Majewski’s first half goal. Jones said: “We were out of luck today because I think we could have had at least one penalty and that would have been our reward for a better second half performance. “Forest were the better side in the first half and could have been two up by half time. But we came back into it after the break and gave it a good go but it wasn’t to be today. “I think with a little bit more composure, we could have taken something. We saw plenty of the ball in the second half and Chris Kirkland has had hardly anything to do. But Forest are a good side with some good players and we are aspiring to be where they are. I can’t fault our players, though, for effort because they gave everything. But it was a game of two halves and the only difference was that they scored when they were on top and we didn’t.” The Owls must now pick themselves up in time for the trip to promotion-chasing Watford on Tuesday night and Jones insists that the Hornets hold no fear to his charges. He added: “I would rather play the top teams because we seem to play better against them. We know all about Watford, they are a very good side but we can be a good side too. That’s two defeats in 13 games and I think most people would have taken that at this stage of the season no matter where you are in the table. It’s still incredibly tight down there and the frustrating thing is that had we won today, we would have jumped a few places and been in amongst the teams on 43 and 46 points. But there are still 12 games to go with a lot of points to play for so we will come in and go again and be ready for the Watford game on Tuesday.” Samantha & Carl Welcome You To

OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Owls loan ace Leroy Lita has been named as the swfc.co.uk Player of the Month for February. The striker attracted 42 per cent of the fans’ vote. The 28-year-old has made a big impact at Hillsborough since his loan switch from Swansea and got off to a flying start away at Charlton by scoring a dramatic last-minute winner against the Addicks. In February, Lita scored the opening goal of the game in the 3-1 win over Brighton on his home debut and followed that up with the winning strike against Crystal Palace three weeks later. The result of the vote was as follows: Leroy Lita: 42 per cent Miguel Llera: 14 per cent Giles Coke: 14 per cent Thank you to all those who took part in the swfc.co.uk Player of the Month vote.

An innovative new work programme which uses sport to increase employment opportunities for young people is set to be launched in South Yorkshire. It has been developed by South Yorkshire Sport and Job Centre Plus who are working with four professional football clubs in the region to deliver the pilot scheme. Job seekers aged between 18 and 21 years old can sign up for the eight-week programme, which starts on March 18. Those who register will be expected to take part in up to four hours of sport a week with community teams at Doncaster Rovers, Barnsley or Sheffield United in return for a Sport Leadership qualification. Helen Marney, director of operations for South Yorkshire Sport, said: “This is a fantastic new prework programme designed to get young people ready for employment. “It is about recognising the role that sport plays in mental wellbeing and increasing self esteem, motivation, communication and leadership skills in 18 to 21 year olds who are receiving job seekers allowance.”

NEW SPORTING EMPLOYMENT SCHEME FOR SOUTH YORKSHIRE JOB SEEKERS
2013 Trips - Book Now!
Job seekers who sign up will take part in activities including football, rugby and street dance and the scheme will culminate in a celebration event at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield (EIS Sheffield). Helen added: “While we are working with football clubs to deliver the activities, the scheme is not about securing jobs in sport. The main aim is to increase the probability of young people entering work and encouraging exit routes into apprenticeships. “We ran an initial pilot with two clubs in 2012 and it was a big success. We are looking to build on this with the second stage pilot. We have started recruiting now and up to 20 places are available with each club.” For more information or to sign up for the scheme visit www.sysport.co.uk.
