PLANS FOR DON VALLEY OLYMPIC LEGACY Exciting proposals for the most comprehensive Olympic legacy project outside of the capital were unveiled this week for the Don Valley stadium footprint in Sheffield. The plans – which could create up to 940 jobs – have already received a warm welcome and support from Lord Coe, chairman of the British Olympic Association and the Government’s Olympic Ambassador. The proposals are backed by critical city partners including both Sheffield universities, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP),

the trust behind the University Technical College (UTC) and Sport England. At the heart of the planned development, details of which were provided by former Sports Minister Richard Caborn, are: - Potential new homes for the Sheffield Eagles (Rugby League) and Titans (Rugby Union) teams – as well as new venues for basketball, gymnastics and snooker - A High Performance Centre linking the critical mass of professional and elite sport on the site to the development of Sheffield Hallam University’s Centre for Sports Engineering

Research and the developing Medical Advanced Manufacturing Centre at the AMRC - A refurbished Woodbourn Road athletics site featuring a 60-80 metre indoor facility to provide allweather training facilities - The potential development of a second University Technical College for Sheffield - The siting of the new National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine - The demolition of the Don Valley Stadium to be filled with land fills from Flame Hill creating a continuous site of 25 acres between the Stadium and the English Institute of Sport.

Mr Caborn said: “This is the result of intensive work by a small group of significant organisations in the Sheffield City Region to consider a future for the Don Valley stadium footprint. It is a unique scheme which has already received funding to go to the feasibility stage. “In effect it becomes an Advanced Sports and WellBeing Park giving a comprehensive delivery of the Olympic legacy that we promised in Singapore in 2005. It has the potential to build even further the sports, leisure and related wellness sector embracing and advancing a range of partners in

the Sheffield City region that will have real and measurable impact on sporting performance at many levels. “This is an economic wealth generation project which would take the Don Valley Stadium site from being under utilised to becoming an economic driver,” added Mr Caborn. “It also builds on the large critical mass of activity around medical technology. More than 200 companies in the Sheffield City Region feed into this global market worth a projected £300bn.”

KEEP WARM WITH FLAMES OF SHEFFIELD Flames of Sheffield have helped over 2,500 customers with their fire, fireplace, stove and central heating needs since they first opened their doors in 2005. Having firmly established themselves over the years as a local destination retailer for anyone looking for a gas or electric fire, fireplace, solid fuel stove or central heating boiler/system, they consistently offer customers a range of high quality products, value for money competitive pricing and a huge choice of bespoke ranges, whilst always maintaining their very highly rated standard of customer service. “We are a truly local, independent specialist fire, fireplace, stove and central heating showroom. At Flames we run specially selected promotional offers during the year on a wide range of fires, fireplaces and stoves. If a customer requires a high efficiency fire, a large amount of heat output or a fire with a unique flame picture we are always able to meet their needs at Flames”, commented Senior Sales Advisor Helen Gowling. “Flames of Sheffield are an official retailer for Trianco, Gazco, Dimplex, Paramount, ESSE, Cast Tec, Matcheless, Nu-Flame, Stovax, Valor, Crystal, Legend, Katell, Surpeme & Colin Parker Masonry to name but a few. This often allows us to offer our customers longer guarantees than normal on the gas and electric fires from these key UK suppliers, for example we give customers a 3 Year parts & labour guarantee on all Valor gas & electric fires”, explained Senior Sales Advisor Sue Martin. Solid fuel stoves have become an increasingly large part of Flames’ business over the years and they offer a professional installation service through their HETAS qualified engineers. Director Lee Day said, “Many of the solid fuel stoves being used in Sheffield and the surrounding areas have almost certainly not been installed by a qualified HETAS engineer. This can lead to many problems and issues in terms of home insurance being invalidated, being incorrectly sealed and fumes leaking into the room(s) or building regulations visiting and insisting a stove is removed due to non-compliance. At Flames of Sheffield we offer a complete project managed service from

start to finish for a customer and are happy to take responsibility for installing and certificating a solid fuel stove or fire/fireplace” As for central heating, Flames of Sheffield offer a different proposition to the majority of installers. They operate from their Hillsborough Barracks bricks and mortar showroom, are open 7 days a week, are not just a mobile number in a book or on the side of a van, plus they have their consumer credit licence and therefore offer a competitive finance facility. Flames are also an Accredited Installer for the entire Worcester-Bosch range of boilers and therefore offer a 5 to 7 Year Parts & Labour Guarantee to their customers, they also give additional guarantees on top of the standard option for all Vaillant boilers and a 5 Year Parts & Labour Guarantee on the equally high quality Remeha range. All of the central heating work they undertake is also backed by a 1 Year Guarantee on the quality of how it is installed, which also gives customers extra piece of mind. Food Review: Silversmiths 111 Arundel Street, Sheffield S1 2NT Laura from meanmuncher.blogspot.com After last week’s little jolly into the world of takeaway, I’m now back in the zone and perhaps most crucially of all, back in a restaurant. I wanted the best: service, ambience, food and company and so I plumped for what can only be described as a celebrity restaurant. Silversmiths is a celebrity because it once played host to a celebrity chef (the sweary one, not the school dinner one), who shouted a lot and told them what to do. I had booked my table earlier in the day and toyed with the idea of giving myself a pseudonym. This is what restaurant critics sometimes do, you see, so they don’t get superior treatment when the restaurant works out who they are. Now, unlike those idiots, I would actually love to get preferential treatment and so I considered such false names as “Beyonce” and (to make it a bit more realistic) “Sean Bean”. However, my friend wisely reminded me that I had a duty of care as a reviewer and that I should therefore retain my own name to ensure total anonymity. Silversmiths is located just behind the Sheffield Hallam students’ union and very near to the train station. The restaurant itself is unusual. There is a long, lone bench, split up into black leather sofas. This means that you dine very publically and very close to others. A man next to me, having just been shown to his seat, exclaimed “This isn’t what I imagined at all! I don’t like it...” I do like it though. Too many times, I have wrongly assumed restaurant booths to be soundproofed, private chambers where unremitting gossip cannot be overheard by others. Too often, this has not been the case and I would say that restaurant booths are almost entirely responsible for my depleted social circle. We chose to sample 2 courses for £14.90, which is a deal available on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Both of us decided on mains and desserts - not because there was anything wrong with the starters - but simply because we love a cake. I went for the cauliflower pie and my friend enjoyed some ‘loose birds’ (I’m too into womens’ lib for the joke in your head). This dish consisted of free-range chicken terrine and Wentworth pheasant terrine, sticky cabbage and creamed leeks. We were both impressed with our mains, although you will need a side or two to share (£2.95 each) to pad it out. I then had a bit of a Sliding Doors fiasco with the desserts. After spending an age debating between baked vanilla cheesecake and flourless dark chocolate cake, I decided on the chocolate. As if there was some mighty force laughing at my gaffe, the waitress mistakenly brought out the cheesecake and I wish I had accepted it. There was nothing wrong per se with the chocolate cake (apart from the beetroot sorbet, which I think I am too much of a barbarian to ‘get’) but the cheesecake had looked incredible. My friend took a honey and lemon panna cotta and we both agreed that this was a perfect palette-cleanser, wonderfully textured and a sure fire winner.

NEWS & INFORMATION

HELPING PEOPLE SOUTH YORKSHIRE SHEFFIELD CITY COPE WITH CHANGES POLICE AIR COUNCIL - WHERE TO BENEFITS OPERATIONS UNIT THE MONEY COMES http://www.southyorks.police.uk/about-us/ourSheffield City Council is taking steps organisation/departments/operational-support- FROM to help people who will be affected by services/air-operations-unit https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/ Government changes to benefits, which come into force from 1 April. The changes are complex, but the reforms which will have the most impact straight away are the introduction of Council Tax Support, which replaces Council Tax Benefit, and will see residents who currently have their Council Tax paid for them having to make a contribution to the costs, and the new underoccupancy rule, commonly referred to as ‘bedroom tax’. This will see tenants who are living in a property that is deemed to be bigger than they need being forced to pay more rent, or to move. Future changes, which will start to affect people in Sheffield from April next year, will see people start to receive all their benefits in one monthly payment. People who previously had their housing benefit paid directly to their landlords will instead see any money to help them pay their rent come straight to them, creating a new challenge for them to manage this money to keep up with their rent payments. Councillor Harry Harpham, Cabinet Member for Homes and Neighbourhoods, said: “One in seven Sheffield residents will be affected by these Government cuts and changes, and two out of three Sheffield Homes tenants. The changes are complicated and varied, and our job is to help people to understand how they will be affected, and let them know how to get help and advice.” Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Communities and Inclusion, added “We’re working closely with partners from our local advice and support centres, housing providers and the Credit Union, to provide the best possible guidance for affected people. There are more changes to the system planned for later this year, and into next year, so we know that this is a long term project.” To help people understand the changes, Sheffield City Council, supported by the Fairness Commission, have developed web pages, posters and booklets providing detailed information about the changes. In collaboration with Sheffield Homes and voluntary organisations, there is a programme of direct community activity, including home visits and community events. Sheffield resident, Wayne Forsythe, told the Council, ‘I’ve got to downsize my flat because of this new rule. I’m trying my best, but to be honest, it’s a struggle already, and with the extra money I’m going to have to pay towards my Council Tax, I’m not really sure how I’m going to manage’. Other proposed changes are to Personal Independent Payments, and the introduction of the benefit cap. More information and useful signposting to services can be found at www.sheffield.gov.uk/ benefitchanges or by calling 0114 2734567.

The Force’s helicopter has become a familiar sight patrolling the skies of South Yorkshire. ‘SY99’ flew into the area in December 2003 at a cost of £4m. It’s operated by the Air Operations Unit and aids the work of officers on the ground. The current helicopter replaced its 21-year-old predecessor providing extra space for passengers and much greater reliability. What is the helicopter doing above my house? If you have ever wondered what the South Yorkshire Police helicopter was doing above your house or workplace you can now find out by following South Yorkshire Police’s Air Operations unit on Twitter. SY99 is the most expensive resource the Force has but this is money well spent. The aircraft covers Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham preventing crime, tackling criminals and saving lives. Many people associate the sight and sound of the helicopter with car chases and criminals on the run, thanks mainly to ‘cop’ shows on TV. However, SY99, the pilots and observers play a vital role in reducing antisocial behaviour, gathering intelligence and locating vulnerable missing people, as well as apprehending suspects on the run. A bit about the aircraft Model: MD 902 Explorer Colour: Midnight blue and yellow, chosen because the contrasting colours increase flight safety Flying hours per year: 1200 Started flying: December 2003 Top Speed: 140 Knots or two miles a minute Equipment: Tracker, Wescam MX15, Skyshout 700 public address system, Nitesun, NOTAR system If you have seen SY99 you may have noticed that the unlike conventional helicopters SY99 does not have a tail rotor system. Instead, it is equipped with a NOTAR ducted fan system, which means it is up to 50 per cent quieter than helicopters fitted with tail rotors. It also means that the aircraft is safer for air and ground crew.

finance/where-does-the-money-come-from.html The Force’s helicopter has become a familiar sight patrolling the skies of South Yorkshire. Revenue Most of the money (63%) comes from central government grants. Income from Council Tax only covers 12% of the spending. A further 25% comes from charges for services, such as council house rents and entrance fees. The money needed for looking after council housing comes from rents from tenants and other income from tenants’ services. Sheffield City Council (SCC) is not allowed to spend money raised from Council Tax on council housing. Capital Over the 5 year life of the capital programme, most of SCC’s capital projects are paid for by contributions from their revenue budget to the capital budget (56%) or grants (27%). Most of the revenue funds for capital are for council housing investments. The remainder of their capital projects is funded by borrowing (8%), the sale of surplus assets (6%) and other contributions (3%). SCC repay the cost of borrowing from their day-to-day revenue spending, often from the savings generated by the projects which allow them to deliver services more efficiently. This year SCC will spend a large proportion of this money to improve homes and schools which together account for 74% of the capital programme in 2013-14. Also see how SCC spends it.

GUTTERBAND TO HEADLINE 1000TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT The Mercury Newspaper – 1000 and counting! 2013 is a very special year for the Mercury – we are only seven issues away from celebrating our 1000th edition! By way of celebration we are holding a very special event – our good friends, the legendary Gutter Band, have agreed to play a special concert for us on Friday April 12th, at Crookes Social Club, headlining a 70s Night with disco and (optional) fancy dress! The boys got back together late last year for a couple of one-off charity appearances,

and they have kindly offered to dust off the kit for one more performance, helping us to mark this very special issue! Over the last nineteen years or so the Mercury has kept you, our readers, informed of all the latest entertainment news and events in and around South Yorkshire – and thanks to our loyal support we plan to be around for many more years to come! Meanwhile the Gutter Band have been around even longer than the Mercury! For almost thirty years the boys have been rocking around the UK

and Europe with their unique “hydraulic” stage show complementing the glam rockers and providing a very special experience for their army of fans. Over the years they have built up a strong and dedicated following, who have flocked to their reunion shows at the later end of 2012. We are delighted therefore that they have agreed to perform for us. We also hope to announce details of the support acts in the next couple of weeks. Meanwhile tickets are selling fast already! If you want to be a part of this special evening,

and also catch what could well be one of the band’s last gigs, make sure you get in early! To book, simply call us on 0114 2763701. Tickets are £6.00 each or tables of 10-12 can be reserved.

We are also offering a very limited number of VIP tables, priced at £120 for ten people. This includes a snack buffet served on the table, and priority waiter service for drink orders, as well as prime seating in the venue.

MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

It’s an age old debate, but where does your preference lie? Would you go for a plain old Digestive or Rich Tea, or go for one of the new recipe chocolate covered ones. Perhaps it’s the ability to dunk which is the most important factor to take into account, or it could just be the taste or look. One of the most annoying things has to be when it’s been one dunk too much and your biscuit simply disintegrates in the cup! As we get set for a charity, or chari – tea, tea party to help raise money for local needy children across South Yorkshire and the North Midlands, with our associated charity Cash for Kids, I’m launching a pole to find our area’s favourite biscuit. Head to our website at magicam. co.uk or just text Trevor, followed by the space key, and then the name of your choice to 63103 (texts 25p + standard network rate). I’ll reveal the overall result on next week’s show, and you’re invited to join us to get your fill of biscuits, cake, tea or coffee at the Tea Party at Little Mesters, Kelham Museum, Sheffield on Saturday March 23rd from 10.00am. You can pick up your tickets either from the venue, or by calling our Cash for Kids office during the day on 0114 209 1100. Come and join me and Sam from Cash for Kids for a spot of tea, a range of top notch cakes, and perhaps even a custard cream or three!

LEEDS FESTIVAL 2013

If you have any news, reviews or events you would like featuring please email info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk

live PREVIEW

Words by KT Evans

And it’s here…the announcement we’ve all been waiting for to determine which festival truly has the very best line up of the summer, not to mention which event we’re going to invest a healthy amount of money into buying a ticket purchase. Well, halt the search as Leeds Festival 2013 has announcement its second wave of acts across many of the weekend’s infamous stages. We like what we see. A lot. So we already heard that Biffy Clyro and Eminem were to headline the annual August bank holiday weekend which we were pretty made up about, however with a whole new batch of bands added to the bill, Leeds Festival looks to the best year to date. Friday 23rd August will see Nine Inch Nails perform the main stage, a band who are back for the first time since 2007 to perform a 2013 UK exclusive show. Fall Out Boy also return to the festival with a UK exclusive appearance. Friday will also see Azealia Banks grace the NME/Radio 1 Stage after blasting through her massive performance on the Dance Stage at last year’s festival. Ex Alexisonfire cleans vocalist Dallas Green and his band City and Colour are to perform on the NME/ Radio 1 Stage. Set to embark on a UK support tour with Biffy Clyro, we estimate this as a certified highlight of the entire weekend. Headlining Saturday 24th August will be Green Day, pop-punk pioneers and all round extreme entertainers. The mighty Deftones are set to perform on the main stage, easily the biggest rock band on the current scene not to mention producers of the finest alternative metal anthems. Sheffield’s Bring Me The Horizon have been confirmed along with Steel City screamers While She Sleeps who are fast becoming the most talked about group in the industry. Announced for the NME/Radio 1 stage on the middle saturday includes A$ap Rocky, the most talked about rapper in the world today along with south London indie quarter Bastille and “Sound of 2013” nominees Peace. Along with the already announced Eminem on the main stage of Sunday 25th August, Chase and Status along with Foals have been confirmed. Winners of the “Best Track” at the NME Awards for “Inhaler,” Foals are the UK’s most prestigious alternative indie group and are set to play one hell of a show. Godfathers of emo, Brand New return to Leeds Festival for the first time since 2009 with a UK festival exclusive performance. Headlining The NME/Radio 1 stage is Alt-J, dance pioneers who bring a massive show each and every showcasing. The Smith’s Johnny Marr is also sharing the stage with Alt-J, having been in one of the most historic and influential groups of our time, The Smiths. Having now released his solo album “The Messenger” to critical acclaim, Johnny Marr is a piece of history you do not want to be missing. Weekend and day tickes are available from www.leedsfestival.com / www.seetickets.com / 08712310821

MISS MAY I CORPORATION 14/3/13

PREVIEW Words by KT Evans

Miss May I…whether you’ve heard the name, glanced at it throughout various music magazines or simply never come across it before, we ask you one simple favour…remember it. One of the most current and fresh bands to emerge from the US post hardcore scene, Miss May I are quickly reaching the very pinnacle of their explosive career. Announced to play Sheffield’s Corporation in an almost hush hush tone, the hype surrounding this band is enough to send shock waves throughout the Steel City when they perform on 14th March. Miss May I truly are in a class of their own. Not only do they extract the very essence of adrenaline riddled live music and transform it into a collage of enormously epic hits, they also have remained enough under the radar to obtain their exclusively underground feel. Although adorning the front covers of music mags throughout the world, the group themselves remain obscure enough to harbour a truly unique and individual vibe. Hence why their performance on 14th March will be held in the small room of Corporation, which holds a capacity of only 200 people. But hold on, If Miss May I are all about creating explosive live sets and have built themselves up as one of America’s finest exports, why are they choosing to perform to such a small crowd? Miss May I are all about the atmosphere. Their music is as fierce as it is emotional, allowing for a set both versatile and on edge, a rollercoaster of feelings, moods and thoughts intertwined within. They don’t care for massive live shows where the atmosphere is lost and only the hardcore fans at the front can feel the music. Yes they have the talent, ability and know-how to maintain massive crowds, although why would they when they can hit Sheffield with the most exclusive and exposing set our city has seen in a very long time. But be warned…it’s going to be brutal. Check out www.corporation.org.uk for tickets to this show. Doors 7pm. 14+. Limited number of tickets still available.

round-up by stuart renton

Justin Bieber might be as irritating as an open sore on the top of a private area, but the whole photographer incident in London last week was pretty shocking. I consider the paparazzi to be considerably lower than scabies on the social hierarchy but that photographer should be never allowed to work in the media again. His attitude was beyond belligerent and while they’ll say ‘it goes with the job’, his behaviour and language were unacceptable. Saying that, weird boy-man Bieber’s response was equally ridiculous. Leaping out of a car to attack a photographer is not setting a positive example to teens everywhere. But it’s not that he’s a carbuncle on pop music that’s the problem, or even that he has a bad attitude, but it’s the fact he clearly believes his own press. The story of the contest winner that got about ten seconds with him after waiting hours in line was pretty damning, yet Bieber thinks it’s OK to fob that story off lightly in a press statement, and worse, that he thinks that’s any way to treat a fan. It really isn’t. Talking about Bieber is a waste of good column inches. And speaking of inches, the only way to see a smaller penis would be to visit the Penistone Reservoir Annual Nude Winter Swim For the Over Sixties, which, much like a Bieber concert, has been known to make grown men spontaneously vomit at the sight of so much extraneous flesh on display. Fandom is a strange and fickle beast and it seems the personal integrity of a celebrity is irrelevant to the supporters, who will follow blindly even

if their hero took a dump on their bed and it’s this blinkered devotion that defies belief, logic, or sanity. Despite having all the artistic merit of a collection of shrivelled off cuts, the boys of One Direction are clearly loathsome little creatures, yet their fans seem blind to their less than savoury antics. One Direction can behave horrifically on social media sites, while Justin Bieber shows he’s nothing more than bad attitude wrapped in a sack of talentless flesh, yet none of it matters to the fans who seem incapable of separating right from wrong where their heroes are concerned. Mind you, when serial killers receive regular marriage proposals, you’ve got to think there’s something wrong with the minds of those elevating them with near religious devotion. Bieber allegedly said he’s never coming back to the UK. We can only pray that’s true. Now, if we can get the same vow from Cheryl Cole and Wicked Witch of the Arse, Sharon Osborne, the UK will be a much better place. Forget Abu Hamza, extradite Osborne back to the US, she’s more dangerous with her duplicitous words and fake smiles. And Botox. In other news, X Factor moron, Christopher Maloney, stunned absolutely no one when he announced he was gay this week. This desperate sleep-inducing headline came as a surprise only to those deprived of at least three major senses - this is the guy whose last headline was that he got a Bette Midler tattoo on his back. He should have had it on his face - a mask of Bette Midler would BE A STEP UP for that sour-faced tosswit. Maloney is still adamant that he’s the nicest guy you’ll ever meet, and that might be true if you lived in Hell and the other guys were Satan, Ted Bundy, and Hitler, but in the real world, it’s obvious he’s just a complete c**k!

TACKLING PROBLEM BEHAVIOUR IN DOGS The PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report 2012 found that 1.3 million dogs show signs of aggression towards people and other pets every week. This includes growling, snarling, snapping and biting. Aggression could lead to very serious consequences. PDSA Senior Vet, Elaine Pendlebury said “The figure taken from the (PAW) Report is worrying for a variety of reasons. The worst could be that some of the dogs showing these signs may have the potential to go further and cause serious injury or death. “ PDSA is encouraging all owners to make sure their dogs aren’t at risk of adding to this animal welfare and public health problem. Although attacks by dogs on people and on other dogs are thankfully rare, cases are still being reported in the papers, with some having fatal outcomes. Elaine continues “In many dogs the root cause of aggression is fear. When a dog feels threatened by something that they are afraid of they may give a warning signal like a growl followed by a bite. In many cases this type of aggressive behaviour can be prevented by properly socialising puppies, gradually exposing them to a range of people and other animals as well as getting them used to household sights and sounds, such as your vacuum cleaner. This should be done from a young age, in a kind and considerate way.” The PAW Report also found that 25% of owners who had their dog as a puppy did not adequately socialise them, 44% of owners don’t know what socialisation their dog had when young, and half of all dogs were never taken to training classes during the first six months of life.

angler’s corner by Clint Walker

After my struggle with dace last week, and the trials of hitting lightening fast bites, it’s been a case of more mini species this week too! I’ve had a long standing invite to visit The Glebe Fishery in Leicestershire which I finally got around to graciously accepting this week. The Glebe is owned and built by hugely successful match angler Roy Marlow who has also been involved in the tackle trade for many years so knows how to make a successful venue! Roy was part of the famed ‘Marks and Marlow’ tackle shop partnership with legendary angler Ivan Marks and also progressed rapidly through the match ranks, joining the ‘Leicester Likely Lads’ along the way before representing England before reaching the peak of runner up in the World Championships; not a bad CV! The plan was to meet up with another well known member of the Marukyu team, Tim Hodges and a couple of others to fish for perch, reputed to reach in excess of 4lbs from Pool Four which had been recommended after a load of big perch turned up in the nets recently. I spent the evening prior to the long trip preparing bait, adding powdered and liquid krill additives to raw prawns, turning casters, checking worms and riddling groundbait, so how could I fail? We all arrived around 7am, so after a quick walk around, I decided to set up camp in the lee of some dogwood bushes in the corner with a shelf and area of deep water in front of me. Tactics involved three smallish balls of groundbait laced with caster, dead maggot and worm chop, then floatfish lob tail and maggot over the top whilst a straight bomb approach offered a prawn tail under the bushes to my right. First cast and the float sailed away....

LOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEK SPONSORED BY CHAMPS

missed it; same thing happened on subsequent casts before I managed to connect with...........a gudgeon! That was followed by a couple of tiny roach, skimmers to 4ozs and the odd small perch before I got snapped by a carp....not the best of starts during a quest for nig perch. In truth, the other lads were faring worse with only three fish all day for Tim, and none for the other lads, so at least I had something to crow about! Whilst replacing my snapped hooklink, I happened to glance at the quivertip and saw an almost imperceptible twitch before it wrenched around and stayed there nodding angrily as whatever it was tried to drop the hook. Why does that always happen when you are drinking tea, biting into a particularly nice pie or sandwich, or answering the call of nature?! With my float rod across my knees, hiding from the rain within the confines of my brolly, with a spare link clenched between my lips, I couldn’t get to rod!!! Needless to say, the fish released the bait and the tip sprang back just as my fingers closed around the rod butt....typical, my one chance of the day and I’d missed it! I had no further interest from anything remotely resembling a big perch, and after a net full of tiddlers, decided enough was enough; I pack away my soaking kit and went home... I will be back though, it was just one of those days where we were destined not to catch, but The Glebe is a fantastic place and I can’t wait to go and have another go soon!

With Cheltenham on the go I have given some selections for the Wednesday to Friday cards below. I apologise in advance for the number of horses named (some more than once in different races)but, because of multiple entries for horses in several races over the Festival, I have given quite a few reserve selections in the event of non-runners. However, if you fancy more than one in a race the odds of some of these might just allow it but please don’t overlook how difficult it is to pick winners at this meeting. All told there is plenty to go at this week. Millers & Rovers News 2012-13

SETBACK FOR MILLERS ROTHERHAM UNITED’s promotion hopes suffered a setback as Luke Wilkinson’s late winner saw Dagenham claim the points despite a battling display from the ten man Millers. The Millers’ were quick out of the blocks and after Alex Revell was clumsily bundled over on the edge of the box. From the resultant free-kick, Michael O’Connor curled a delightful effort which had Chris Lewington nervously scurrying across goal but it whistled narrowly wide of the upright. In their first foray of note, Dagenham missed a guilt-edged chance when Matthew Saunders’ drilled corner found Medy Elito at the far stick whose clever pull-back saw Abu Ogogo blaze the ball over from six yards with the goal at his mercy. Just past the quarter hour, the Millers’ were finally building a head of steam and Ben Pringle’s arrowed ball saw Liam Ridehalgh got the better of Saunders in a tussle before fizzing an effort which was deflected away to safety. The Millers’ came within a whisker of the breakthrough just shy of the half-hour when O’Connor curled another tantalising free-kick over the Dagenham wall but with Lewington frantically throwing himself across goal, the ball shaved the outside of the upright. Minutes later, fine interplay between Johnny Mullins and David Noble paved the way for Lee Frecklington to have a sight of goal, but his first-time shot was comfortably gathered by Lewington. With half-time approaching, Pringle waltzed around Kevin Maher and Gavin Hoyte before playing a slide-rule ball into the advancing run of Mullins, but his goalbound effort was blocked by a retreating defender. The home side almost broke the deadlock in first-half injury-time when Frecklington robbed Hoyte, who dallied in possession and Nardiello’s reverse pass back into the path of the Millers’ midfielder saw him bear down on goal but his low effort was blocked by Lewington. The Millers’ hopes were dealt a blow just short of the hour mark when Wilkinson’s long punt upfield saw Elito get on the wrong side of Kari Arnason before the two clashed in the box and the referee, after a few moments thought, awarded the spot kick before brandishing the red card to the Icelandic international. From the resultant spot-kick, Elito

picked himself to blast the ball into the heart of the goal evading the dive of Warrington. Evans’ immediately reshuffled his pack with Mark Bradley introduced into a three man defence and they responded bravely when Nardiello ghosted past Saunders before striking an effort from distance which Lewington was forced to parry over. From the resultant corner, the New York Stadium was in full voice when Noble swung a delightful inswinger and Claude Davis rose highest to power a header into the roof of the net to put the home side back on level terms despite their numerical disadvantage. The home side were buoyed by the equaliser and Nardiello deceived Doe with a clever piece of skill before firing an effort which rolled tantalisingly across the face of goal. At the other end, Davis was well-stationed to snuff out a wicked Billy Bingham cross before a superb counter attack led by Pringle saw Nardiello have a one-on-one opportunity with Femi Ilesanmi but he dragged his shot well wide of the target. The home fans had their hearts in their mouths when Davis cynically hauled down Elito just outside the box with appeals for a spotkick from the visitors. However, Dagenham made the Millers’ pay when Saunders’ carefully disguised free-kick saw Wilkinson ghost away from his marker before calmly slotting the ball into the top right corner of the goal giving Warrington no chance. The Millers’ again responded positively and when Frecklington was the victim of a robust challenge on the edge of the box, Pringle smashed the resultant free-kick against the crossbar with Lewington just a bystander. The Daggers’ should have sealed the game when a lucky ricochet put Howell in the clear but his dinked effort beat Warrington but rolled wide of the target. Rotherham:- Warrington, Mullins, Davis, Arnason, Ridehalgh (Bradley 61), O’Connor, Noble, Pringle (Agard 89), Frecklington, Nardiello, Revell (Odejayi 83). Unused:- Shearer, Tonge, Morgan, Rowe Dagenham and Redbridge:- Lewington, Wilkinson, Ilesanmi, Doe, Scott, Elito (Strevens 84), Saunders, Maher (Bingham 46), Howell, Hoyte, Ogogo. Unused:- Seabright, Green, Reed, Dennis, Gracco.

steelers news

STEELERS HIT 4 WITHOUT REPLY TO BEAT THE DEVILS

The Steelers staged a stunning come back in Cardiff trailing 4-1 after 23 minutes but eventually beating out the Devils 5-4 Rod Sarich scored the game winning goal 4 minutes into the final session after early strikes from Messrs: Limpright, Tait, League and former Devil Chris Frank. Ashley Tait had the Steelers ahead after just 19 seconds but Ryan Finnerty’s side then conceded 4 in the next 23 minutes, first period efforts from Gerad Adams and Kenton Smith followed by two quick goals at the start of the second session from Birbraer and Piggott. It was all too much for the Steelers head coach who pulled John DeCaro for back up goalie Geoff Woolhouse. Woolhouse would go onto to face 14 shots in the remainder of the game without conceding. Steelers fight back started at 30.08 whilst killing a Shawn Limpright roughing minor, the Steelers were shorthand but Legue and Michel assisted on Chris Franks goal. With the middle period coming to an end the Steelers struck twice in 19 seconds. First Jeff Legue at 39.36 and then Shawn Limpright for the Steelers second short handed goal of the night with Simon Ferguson off for elbows. With the game tied the Steelers scored the only goal of the final period, Rod Sarich with the

eventual winner. Final score: Cardiff Devils 4-5 Sheffield Steelers. Ryan Finnerty confirmed the reason he pulled goalie John DeCaro at the 24 minute mark in Cardiff was because Johnny didn’t deserve what was happening in front of him “Johnny wasn’t our problem early on” said Finnerty “It was those in front of him. Johnny deserved better “When we made the change there were a few home truths told and a few guys had to sit for a while and have a think, a few guys responded like Rod Sarich, he stepped his game up and played with emotion. He deserved to get the winner. “The reality is we go what we deserved all game, we weren’t great for 20 minutes and Cardiff deserved their lead. We were very poor at the start of the middle period and the Devils deserved their extended lead. After that we played miles better, just like we know we can and we deserved to hit four without reply and win the game 5-4. We deserved the 2 points “The reason Steven Goertzen didn’t play tonight was purely precautionary after coming back early from injury the night before. I was pleased how Scott Champagne responded. He worked and played hard and had a decent game. “Right now I can tell we are thinking Challenge Cup and Play Off’s. We have to get our consistency back before those games though”

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2 12-13 ALL SQUARE DOWN AT THE LANE MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

The Blades were applauded off after Saturday’s stalemate with MK Dons. Danny Wilson’s side showed most of the attacking intent in the 0-0 draw, which enabled the Blades to record a sixth consecutive clean sheet. Murphy returned to the Blades starting line-up following his groin problem, Poleon dropped to the bench, where he was joined by Higginbotham and Forte. Despite United being forced to kick towards the Kop in the first half, the Blades fans were in fine voice from the start, responding to Danny Wilson’s pre-match calls for positivity. Murphy began from the left, allowing Robson to operate centrally with Kitson and a couple of tasty tackles set the scene. United started well, won the game’s first corners and Robson tested goalkeeper McLouglin in the slippery conditions with a long-range shot after six minutes. The Dons weathered the early Blades pressure and hit back with a dangerous free-kick and corner but the home side were quickly back on the offensive. From a McMahon cross, a header from Kitson was straight at McLoughlin, whilst a Robson volley on 25 minutes was on target but hit a defender in a crowded penalty area. On the half hour there was the strange situation of a linesman giving offside from a goal-kick but he was helped out by the man in the middle, eventually. The referee’s next action was to book Maguire for sliding in on Chicksen. McMahon was off target after a neat build-up and United were applying the pressure again as half-time approached. The best chance of the half came on 44 minutes when Lewington was robbed

by the double act of Flynn and Kitson, resulting in the latter crossing for Robson, who headed just over when arching his back. The Blades players were applauded off at the break but were forced to defend early in the second period, Bowditch whipping in a free-kick which Kay headed over. Murphy had a couple of runs at the Dons defence but he was the first United change, being replaced by Forte on the left. Forte almost made a quick impression when he beat the offside trap to latch onto a McDonald pass but McLoughlin got just enough of his body onto the shot to deflected the ball wide. There was a nervous moment for Blades fans on 76 minutes when Bamford went down under a Doyle challenge in the penalty area - fortunately, the official blew to caution Bamford for a dive. United’s own spot-kick appeals were turned down when Flynn went down after connection with Williams but the referee again waved play on In the final ten minutes Poleon replaced Robson and the substitute almost got on the end of a Doyle pass, but the visiting goalkeeper was quickly off his line. McDonald fired just over the angle of post and crossbar. Roared on by the crowd, the Blades continued on the front foot as the game neared the 90 minute mark. Gleeson fired wide of the near post for the visitors but as three extra minutes was announced, the home side were still on the attack, winning a couple of corners. However, the hard-working Blades were unable to find a winner, the last chance being Collins attempting to get onto a Doyle free-kick. Blades: Long, Maguire, Hill, Flynn, Doyle, McDonald, Kitson, Collins, Robson (Poleon 83), Murphy (Forte 62), McMahon. Unused: Westlake, Higginbotham, Ironside, McFadzean, Coyne.

DIEGO OUT FOR THE SEASON GAFFERS NOTES www.sufc.co.uk

Danny Wilson has revealed Diego De Girolamo could miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury. The young striker damaged his knee whilst playing for Italy’s U18s against Austria last week, after earlier scoring for the Italians. The Blades boss says the 17-year-old will be sidelined for the immediate future, although the full picture should become clearer later this month. Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Crewe, Wilson said: “Diego will have scan on the 20th March to confirm what we feel about the problem. He isn’t going to play for a while, but we don’t know how long he will be out for at the moment and I am not prepared to speculate. “It isn’t fair on the lad without knowing all the facts, but he will certainly be missing for the next few weeks, minimum. “We are all gutted for him, especially with him being a young lad. He has got everything in front of him, but all that excitement has been taken away from him now. “He would have relished the opportunity to feature in the run-in. But this injury is how football is and he will have the support of the club throughout his recovery.”

KEVIN HAPPY ON THE ROAD SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

Kevin McDonald is optimistic the Blades can continue the excellent form on the road during forthcoming trips to Crewe and Stevenage. United have won 10 and drawn six of the 18 away matches played so far this term and McDonald feels the Blades are perfectly equipped to continue to pick up points away from home to aid the push for promotion. Looking ahead to Tuesday night’s clash with the Railwaymen at Gresty Road, McDonald commented: “I think we underestimated Crewe earlier in the season and paid the price by not winning the match and conceding three goals in the process. “We should have still won that game, but I am sure Tuesday night will be a much tighter fixture. “Our away form has been very good all season, excellent in recent weeks, we set our stall out to be solid and teams struggle to break us down. “It is the complete opposite to playing at home to be honest, the home side has to come out and attack and we are very good at picking teams off on the counter attack. “In away games, when we get control of the match, we are capable of making the opposition work hard out of possession and that helps us create goalscoring opportunities.”

MK Dons: McLoughlin, Lewington, Williams, Potter, Bowditch, Smith (Bamford 58), Chicksen, Lowe, (Gleeson 69) Powell (Doumbe 32), Lines, Kay. Unused: Otsemobor, McLeod, Flanagan, Baldock.

Sheffield Wednesday News 2012-13

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 12-13 OWLS OUT FOX LEICESTER MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk

Sheffield Wednesday gained a valuable three points in their bid for Championship survival at Leicester on Saturday. A single goal scored by Sunderland loanee Connor Wickham – his first for Wednesday – after the break secured a vital victory at the King Power Stadium. It was the perfect response from Dave Jones’ side after the midweek setback at Watford, who turned in an excellent display in all areas against the promotionchasing Foxes. There was pressure on both sides heading into the fixture as the Owls were aiming to pull away from the dangerzone after back-to-back defeats to Nottingham Forest and the Hornets. For Leicester, the game presented an opportunity to make up ground on the top four in the Championship after winning just one game in their previous six. There was a good atmosphere inside the ground at kick off and plenty of noise being made by the 3,500 Wednesday fans in the corner but it was the home side who threatened first. Foxes’ frontman David Nugent brought a fine diving save from Chris Kirkland, who plucked the ball from the top corner in the fifth minutes. Michael Keane headed over from Ben Marshall’s corner moments later as Leicester began the game on the front foot. But with Jeremy Helan and Michail Antonio patrolling the flanks for Wednesday, there was plenty of threat for the visitors and it was the latter who carved the Owls’ first opening on 12

minutes. Antonio made fast tracks down in the wide right position before whipping a dangerous ball in the middle for Leroy Lita, who couldn’t direct his header on target. Kirkland was then called into action on the half hour making a key near post save from Ritchie De Laet before Antonio and Lita almost combined to put the Owls in front but Lita’s header was comfortably gathered by Kasper Schmeichel. De Laet was at the heart of the action again for Leicester as the full back jinked inside from the right and hit a firm drive on target but Kirkland was equal to the strike from ten yards and parried to safety. There was a lively start to the second period with big chances at both ends. First, ex-Owls loanee Marshall delivered a superb ball with pace into the box that Harry Kane headed over from close range. From that chance, play quickly reverted to the opposite end where Lita played a cutting ball into the path of Antonio but Schmeichel was out quickly to close down the angle and keep out the strike. The home side were beginning to enjoy the lion’s share possession but the breakthrough would come for the Owls on 70 minutes. Lewis Buxton sent over an accurate cross into the middle, Antonio made a connection in the centre before the ball fell for Wickham, who powered his half volley on target and Schmeichel could not get enough behind the ball to keep out the ferocious effort. The Foxes went close to grabbing a quick equaliser when Andy King struck the post with a glancing header. But despite the late pressure and the five minutes of added time, that was as close as the home side came to rescuing anything from the game as the Owls emerged triumphant.

JONES HAILS MAGNIFICENT PERFORMANCE OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Dave Jones has hailed what he tagged ‘a magnificent performance’ as the Owls beat promotion hopefuls Leicester at The King Power Stadium on Saturday. Connor Wickham’s first goal for the club proved the difference, the loanee from Sunderland striking 70 minutes in to seal a crucial victory for his temporary employers. Jones praised the teenage hitman – together with his team mates, who the manager said continued where they left off from Watford in midweek, save the score. He said: “I thought we were magnificent, absolutely magnificent. We had a gameplan and it worked against one of the strongest sides in the division. “We just carried on where we left off at Watford on Tuesday. We were extremely disappointed to come away from there without all three points, never mind nothing. “But we came here to win and I thought we played ever so well. “Connor was superb in getting the goal but they all were. They deserve all the plaudits they will get from this win.” Continuing on Wickham, Jones confirmed that talks will begin on the immediate future of the former Ipswich starlet. He said: “I will sit down with the chairman, talk to Martin O’Neill up at Sunderland and see where we go from here. “He’s a pleasure to work with, he wants to learn and I’m delighted for the lad that he has got his goal.” Concluding his post-match press conference, Jones paid a special tribute to the travelling army of Wednesdayites in attendance at Leicester. He added: “I have to say a special thank you to those supporters out there today. “All I could hear was them and when you have that kind of support, it makes all the difference. “There were almost three and a half thousand of them here today and they demand a performance. “The players responded and I’m proud of them, proud of them all.” Samantha & Carl Welcome You To

Wednesday winger Jermaine Johnson has received a call-up from the Jamaican national squad. The Reggae Boyz are scheduled to play Panama and Costa Rica later this month and both games are FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Jamaica will first of all play host to Panama in Kingston on Friday 22 March before travelling to San Jose on Tuesday 26 March where they will take on Costa Rica. The 32-year-old featured for Jamaica last month in their 0-0 draw against Mexico. Prior to that game, Johnson’s last cap for his country came back in November 2009 in a friendly against South Africa. Johnson has made 36 appearances for Wednesday this season, scoring three goals.
