HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS ARRIVE WITH THEIR “YOU WRITE THE RULES” TOUR Time Out PAGE 4

THE FORCE IS STRONG IN SHEFFIELD Everyone’s favourite little big race is back and better than ever. Returning for a third year, Steve Peat and friends bring you the next instalment in Peaty’s Steel City Mini Downhill Last year there were 200 racers and over 700 spectators lining the course in Greno woods to see what happens when a Mini Downhill race is put on Peaty Style! They were rewarded by some fast racing from the ten year old groms in their first event through to the man himself; all flowing down a course crafted by local trail builders Biketrack.org, before launching into the

infamous crowd filled finish bomb hole. This year you can expect more of the same, with a course that is being tweaked to perfection and will include a new rollercoaster berm section. Timing will again be provided by MIJ organisers of their own Welsh series. As ever, we are really fortunate to be supported by the local bike scene, with stands and prizes confirmed so far from Cotic Bikes, 18 Bikes, The Bike Tree, Big Stone, Over-Ride Cycle Works, Edinburgh Bicycle COOP, Avanti Conveyers, YorScaff, Ticket2Ride, Santa Cruz Bikes, Royal Racing and Monster. Tado will once

again be furnishing all the winners with custom made medals. Local favourites and long-time supporters Bradfield Brewery will be on hand to quench thirsts and Motoré Café will be providing a lift for the discerning coffee drinkers too. If you needed more incentive to pedal harder; Whirlow Hall Farm Café will be providing us with a BBQ and Hog Roast and Streetfood Chef will be on hand to feed you with their award winning Burritos This is a Charity event and all funds raised from the race go directly back to the Sheffield Wildlife Trust and the trails in

Greno Woods. We hope you have been enjoying the improvements to the trails that last year’s race funded. Entries will be opening on Thursday 21st March at 8pm through British

Cycling and as in previous years we expect them to sell out in a matter of hours. To keep up to date on all things Steel City you can visit www.stevepeat.com/ steelcitydh and follow us on Facebook and Twitter

Copley’s Column

Last Sunday was St. Patrick’s Day, and every year, the Irish gave us all a lesson about patriotism with their celebrations. In the main, Guinness was the order of the day, with copious quantities being consumed. It is ironic that we English people tend to celebrate St. Patrick’s day more than our own St. Georges Day. We all have Irish friends and seem happy to enjoin them in their celebrations. I must confess that I much prefer the Irish to the Welsh, with notable exceptions including Sarah Fearnley from Bjorn Again and top duo Agnetha and Frida, and my opinion was re-enforced over the weekend after the thrashing England received from the Welsh in the rugby and my beloved Sheffield Wednesday losing to table toppers Cardiff City. We have a delightful Scottish lad in our local pub that really let him down with a post on Facebook encouraging a Welsh victory over the English. This foolhardy post can do nothing but cause anger amongst the English, who will undoubtedly pass comment about foreigners coming South over the border stealing our jobs. However, this flippant comment really bounced back on our Scottish friend when his football team, Heart of Midlothian were beaten by St. Mirren in the Scottish Communities League Cup Final, and his adopted team, would you believe, Sheffield United, were soundly thrashed four goals to nil by lowly Stevenage. That is what I call Karma. I was pleased to have sight of a DVD this week of top comedian, Bobby Dennis, being quite rightly lauded by his showbusiness peers whilst he was in Australia. Bobby was guest speaker at The Entertainer’s Luncheon, at the Northbridge Golf Club, where for half an hour he had to give a talk about his long life in the business without telling any jokes. I learned a lot about Bobby, narrating things about his life that this modest man had never revealed to me before. I am sure that he will want to kill me for imparting this information but it transpires that diminutive Bobby, standing all of five feet five inches was a bit of a hero. World War two was taking place, at the age of seventeen and

a half, Bobby wanted to fight Hitler as a Spitfire pilot. However, when he discovered that the training would take place in either Rhodesia or Canada and would take eighteen months, which was no good for our Bobby as he wanted to engage Hitler immediately and so he joined the paratroopers. Regrettably, on his sixth jump, his parachute became twisted and Bobby went the wrong way round in an effort to untwist it and fell heavily, resulting in him breaking his leg and sustaining head injuries and he was hospitalised for three months and he therefore missed the Rhine crossing, luckily for Hitler. He was sent to Palestine for the next two years, where there was much unrest similar to that in Afghanistan. Bobby was a keen footballer and never missed a match. He and his mates set off in a three ton Bedford, and unknown to them they each carried a petrol can. The lorry was involved in an accident and all except Bobby and three others were burnt to death. He was in hospital for nine months in Haifa badly burnt. Penicillin was a new drug at the time and without one hundred and twenty eight injections, our Bobby would not be here today. Caron and I celebrated four years together with another exceptional meal at Aubergine in Chesterfield, kindly paid for by my true real friend and local landlord, Chris Snell. We were really surprised and happy when we were joined by Diana Edwards armed with a bottle of champagne.

HARLEM Weekly Wit With... ALBERT GLOBETROT INTO SNODGRASS SHEFFIELD

The world famous Harlem Globetrotters will bring their 2013 “You Write The Rules” World Tour to the UK next year, returning with a new team and brand new show. Tipping off in March, the team will be displaying their skills to audiences across the country and packing in plenty of fun for all the family along the way. For the first time ever, during the Globetrotters’ 2013 “You Write the Rules” World Tour, your family’s smiles will begin before you even get to the show. Fans will decide the rules for the game that could affect the final outcome. This could be anything from playing with two basketballs at once, to getting double the points for each basket made. Tickets for the tour’s 270-plus games are still available. Go online with your kids to www. harlemglobetrotters.com to vote for which groundbreaking rule you want to see implemented in the game. Then, get your tickets, and see the winning rules in live action at the Globetrotters’ world championship game. This year’s Globetrotters roster features stars such as: Special K Daley, Big Easy Lofton, Flight Time Lang, Dizzy Grant, and Scooter Christensen – along with female star TNT Maddox and 7-foot-8 Tiny Sturgess, the Guinness World Record holder as the World’s Tallest Professional Basketball Player (roster may change city to city). Renowned worldwide for their top class basketball tricks and one-of-a-kind family entertainment, the Harlem Globetrotters perform to thousands of people in hundreds of countries every year, continuing the team’s legacy which began in 1926. Over the years, as well as breaking basketball records, the teams have broken social and cultural barriers – featuring on the cover of Life magazine in the 1940s, becoming the first basketball team to play in Europe and selling out a tour of the Soviet Union during the Cold War in 1959 to mention just a few. The Harlem Globetrotters UK tour will be stopping off at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on Tuesday 26th March 2013. Tickets are still available priced at £40/£25/£19/£12.50 (subject to booking fee) and are available in person from the Arena Box Office, the ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56 or online at www. motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk.

THE FULL MONTY TAKES TO THE STAGE Sixteen years on from the film’s release, an allstar cast takes to the stage of the Lyceum theatre to re-tell a story close to the hearts of many Sheffielders. Scripted by it’s creator Simon Beaufoy and directed by Daniel Evans, this production is a superb stage adaptation of one of Britain’s best-loved comedies. The Full Monty explores the lives of six unemployed men, four of them former steel workers, who decide to raise money by forming a male striptease act. Barely an empty seat in sight, the curtains opened to a large and expectant crowd. The play tackled bleak themes, such as, depression, unemployment and suicide with strong language and a gritty sense of humour that caused the audience to laugh out loud from start to finish. Staying faithful to the film’s soundtrack the audience were treated to the music of Donna Summer, Tom Jones and Hot Chocolate, which as well as delivering familiarity, provided essential comedy. The scene where Gaz and friends start to dance in time to Hot Stuff while queuing at the job-centre was particularly memorable. The cast were exemplary with a standout performance from Simon Rouse (Jack Meadows from The Bill) as middle-aged Gerald, afraid to tell his wife he no longer has a job. The big scene at the end did not disappoint and gained loud cheers from female members of the audience. A must see play. I nearly died in an accident at Cadbury World, I was trapped for ages because every time I shouted “the Milky Bars are on me!” everyone just cheered. ------------------------------------------------------------I’m so rock and roll that I live my life by the Spinal Tap rule; turn everything up to 11! Haven’t had a decent slice of toast in years. ------------------------------------------------------------Custard pies have been banned at the circus. That’ll be a big slap in the face for clowns then. ------------------------------------------------------------I went to the library today and asked, “Have you got any books about modern trains?” The librarian replied, “Sorry Sir. It should have been here this morning, but it’s not arrived yet.” ------------------------------------------------------------The neighbour next door said his mate would leather me if I continued to insult and mock him... “So he’s an upholsterer as well as a a***hole” I said. ------------------------------------------------------------A pie factory has exploded injuring 4 members of staff. The blast was heard 3.146 miles away. ------------------------------------------------------------My girlfriend came home all excited. “You know your ex, Claire? The one I stole you off?” she asked. “Well, she must have forgiven me because she’s invited me out gambling tonight! She told me I can have all the fun while she just watches.” “Oh,” I said. “That’s.....good.” “I know,” she gushed. “And I can’t wait to find out how the Russians play roulette differently to us”.

Daisies - To dream of Daisies is extremely fortunate

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

Dreams Probably the most famous example of a dream is when Jacob saw a ladder leading up to heaven. He later interpreted a Pharaoh’s dream and adverted the danger of famine, pestilence and civil war in Egypt. People ask “what is a dream?” and “where does it come from?” A dream is a manifestation of thoughts, activities, and memories. I did a feature for a magazine about St Hilda of Whitby Abbey.

Dentist - To dream of the dentist means you will have trouble with your digestion. You had better take care of your health! Eagle - To dream you see an eagle in a high place is a good sign to those who are in business Earrings - For a woman to dream of being given earrings means your lover may be unfaithful. Earrings made of pink rose quartz means he is a true love - black onyx means it will not last. Eyes - The eyes are the windows to the soul, and Ancients believe they are the light of understanding. To dream of an injury to the eyes or disease affecting them is a sign you have enemies. To dream of being haunted by a pair of staring eyes is an omen of good fortune.

I researched the information and changed the wording four times just to get it right. That night (not suprisingly!) I dreamt of the Abbess St Hilda. But also I looked up the meaning of this dream and it said “if you dream of an Abbess a friend is saying spiteful Fairies - If you dream about a fairy giving you money, the opposite will happen! It’s a sign you will things about you.” lose money. Here are some interpretations of different subjects we may dream about: Falcon - To dream of birds of prey signifies increases in riches - but also warns you to beware - you may be Abbey - I often dream about Whitby which always surrounded by enemies. features the Abbey. But the interpretation of Abbey is “your difficulties are coming to an end.” Fire - People who dream of fire have a fiery temper. To dream you are burning is often the sign of a Baby - To dream you are nursing a stranger’s baby violent fever. foretells sickness in the family . Bat - To dream of a bat or a flying bird means “don’t do any business that day.” To see a bat flying about in a dusky evening signifies you will meet a deceitful person. Generally dreaming of bats is not a lucky omen. Cap or Hat - To dream of putting on a cap or hat signifies that you must be careful in your love affairs: if you receive a cap you will soon be married. A red cap means passion, whereas a blue cap means a spiritual person. So when you remember your dream check what colour the cap is.

Food Review: Wagamama 2 Leopold Square, Sheffield S1 Laura from meanmuncher.blogspot.com As much as I try to concentrate on local, independent operations in Sheffield, you sometimes just want to sack off all the risk-taking and run along to the old-faithful. It’s a bit like Sunita’s affair on Coronation Street – in the end, she just wanted to be back with solid and dependable Dev. Sometimes familiarity is the nicest thing. After being seated at one of the large canteen-style benches at the Leopold Sqaure branch, a friendly waiter came over to ask whether we had been to Wagamamas before. Now, if the restaurant worked in an unconventional way like, I don’t know, you had to write your menu choices on your forehead and recite the lyrics of Food Glorious Food for someone to come and take

your order then it might make sense to explain it. Wagamamas just works like any other restaurant though and so I think what they’re trying to say here is that it’s possible that not all your dishes will arrive at the same time. If you’re a bit wary about Japanese food, thinking it’s all uncooked fish and weird, salty tasting sauces, you should definitely order a katsu curry. You will be fed either healthy chicken or obese chicken (the chickens are, as far as I know, uniformly farmed but the fried stuff will make you obese and the grilled stuff might make you thin) covered in chip shop curry sauce (£9.40). There is also a deep-fried veggie option (obese) which I ordered (£8.45). Katsu curry is so cutting edge that I don’t think the Japanese have even discovered it yet. The fools! My fellow diner ordered Itame Yasai (£8.65), which is also newly available with prawns (£10.85) or chicken (£9.75). The itame contains a ton of fresh ingredients for the price you pay: beansprouts, chillies, red and spring onions, bok choi, pepper and mushrooms. Wagamamas are perhaps the only company I know to suffer from reverse Creme Egg syndrome. What I mean by this is that usually, everyone complains that manufacturers make their products smaller (whilst simultaneously increasing the price “to take account of inflation” aka to buy a new company car). Now, ruling out the fact that I have unwittingly become Benjamin Button, I believe that over the years, the portions have expanded. This is a company policy that should be applauded and applied to boobs, wine bottles and Jammy Dodgers; wouldn’t THAT be a party you’d want to be invited to?Having said all that, when you go to these chains you do hope that the economies of scale are paying off. In return for sacrificing any hint of passion or individuality, you should expect to pay less than, say, a family-run noodle bar. What makes me sad about Wagamamas is the price of the desserts. A slice of (admittedly, very tasty) white chocolate and ginger cheesecake costs a whopping £5.10. They’re just pushing their luck a bit, aren’t they? Let’s conservatively assume that there are 12 slices per 1 mass-produced cheesecake. Do a bit of maths and you will soon discover that this cheesecake is worth £61.20. Shave a quid off the desserts, keep making the portions bigger and I’m yours, Wagas.

NEWS & INFORMATION

YOUR LOCAL CREDIT DRIVING AWAY LONELINESS IN UNION Jackie Halliwell, Sheffield Credit Union SHEFFIELD A little time ……. A lot of fun Fed up of banks and their high bonuses, with their unreasonable charges and lack of assistance for people in times of austerity and hardship? Don’t want to turn to high cost lenders that invade our high streets and our TV screens? There is a great alternative – your local Credit Union. Not-for-profit and run by the people for the people of Sheffield, the bigger we get, the more we can offer to our members. Upon becoming a member, you are able to access savings for a range of purposes, including Christmas and holidays. Savings are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, and so are always safe in the Credit Union. Christmas savings earn a high street voucher reward, and savings earn a dividend. Affordable loans are flexible and simple to arrange – we don’t charge interest up front like banks, and there is no charge for overpaying or paying off a loan early. We specialise in smaller to medium sized loans, for home improvements, household goods, holidays and expensive times of year, like Christmas. We are a cheaper, more transparent way of borrowing than companies who offer payment terms for goods or insurance. The interest helps cover our costs and improve our services rather than providing needless bonuses and dividends to shareholders in distant places. A recent DWP study confirmed Credit Unions to be the best value provider of loans under £2000 in the UK. Why else should you join? As well as our mission to provide more and better notfor-profit financial products for the people of Sheffield (our aspirations are to offer interest bearing accounts, ISAs and even mortgages one day), we offer products such as budgeting accounts to help those who struggle to manage finances plan more effectively and maximise their money. But, saving the best until last, the members drive the direction of the organisation, so you can have a say over what we can do for you! Sheffield Credit Union are at 16 Commercial Street, Sheffield S1 2AT and can be contacted on 0114 2760787 number or e-mail admin@sheffieldcreditunion.com Their website is www.sheffieldcreditunion. com

Sunday is the loneliest day of the week for those elderly people who live alone, often without family nearby, and are unable to get out without a helping hand, and so miss the social contacts they had once had. We form small groups for monthly Sunday afternoon friendship tea parties held in the home of a different local volunteer host each month. Each older person is collected by a volunteer driver taken to the host’s home which brings friendship, laughter, conversation back into their lives. Our groups are kept small, about 7 or 8 older guests, 3 or 4 monthly drivers and about 10 yearly hosts. The party runs from 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm every month. The charity has 485 groups nationally, with 36 in Yorkshire – Sheffield has 2 active groups in and a 3rd needing more help to keep going. We are looking for friendly people to help ... Drivers - Just one Sunday afternoon a month - or as a reserve. Use their own car to take one or two members to the tea party and join in and take them home again. Everyone involved enjoys the experience. Hosts – just once a year welcome a small group into your home for afternoon tea just once a year on a Sunday afternoon. Not too many steps and a downstairs toilet are essential. Or to organise the monthly visits … Normally a driver, who ensures that all is well, and coordinates the visit to a different host each month. A member said recently “once you are old you can become a non-person, but Contact has changed all that – being taken out by my lovely driver and welcomed into someone’s home has made me feel alive again and gives me something to look forward to every month….” If you would like to make a difference to the lives of those who are lonely please ring Mary and she will ring you back with all the details. Mary Robinson, Executive Officer, North and Midlands – Tel: 01535-632592 Email: mary.robinson@contact-the-elderly.org.uk or via our Website: www.contact-the-elderly. org.uk on 101. SCC do not ask for your name but there are some optional questions in the ‘about you’ section at the end that will ensure that they include a cross-section of residents across the city. Telephone survey The survey can also be carried out free over the telephone by calling 0800 5873115. You will be put through to a Research Adviser where you can complete the survey over the phone. You will not be charged for the call. Paper copies To request a paper copy of the survey please call the Freephone Helpline on 0800 5873115. SHEFFIELD LAWYER HOSTS CONCERT OF FILM MUSIC FOR LOCAL CHARITY

Andrew Wallis, from the Real Estate team at national law firm Irwin Mitchell’s Sheffield office, is hoping to raise money for a Sheffield based charity which provides the neurosciences department of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital with state of the art surgical equipment and facilities. Andrew and his family have been Neurocare supporters for several years.

Andrew said: “The charity’s work is close to my heart on a personal level, as my family have had first hand experience of the fantastic care and treatment offered by the staff on Royal Hallamshire’s Neuro Ward. I’m delighted to say that Irwin Mitchell’s Sheffield Office, particularly its personal injury Neurotrauma department, has also been a supporter of Neurocare for a number of years and supporting great local causes is part of the ethos running through Irwin Mitchell.” Joining forces with Unite the Union (City of Sheffield) brass band and together with the help of his family, the Neurocare Group of Champions and the charity itself, he has organised a night to remember with familiar music from movies old and new. Employers Irwin Mitchell have

VOICE OF THE WIN ‘NOW’ NIGHTINGALE WITH MAGIC RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques

Radio Nightingale, the radio service at the Rotherham General Hospital, is celebrating Hospital Broadcasting Week with an open evening on Monday. The station is run by volunteers and provides entertainment for the patients around the clock to help pass the time during their admission. The annual event of Hospital Broadcasting Week is an opportunity to raise awareness of the work of Radio Nightingale and other stations across the country. Later this year Radio Nightingale is celebrating 35 years of broadcasting. A series of events are being planned to celebrate this achievement and Radio Nightingale are looking for new volunteers to join the team specifically to help with anniversary celebrations. In particular, people who can organise events, fundraise, update the station website and use social media, record and edit audio to create jingles and programme features. Also, the station is going back to hospital radio roots and returning to providing football commentaries from Rotherham United home games and there are still some spaces to fill in the team. It’s a really exciting time to be involved in Radio Nightingale. There are so many developments in so many aspects of our work as we strive to provide the best possible service to the patients. If you can offer any of your time, even if it’s only for a short time to help us with the anniversary celebrations, we’ll appreciate your contribution to this fantastic team effort. The open evening is on Monday from 6.00pm to 8.00pm. Where previous listeners are welcome to come along and meet some of the team and look around the studio plus it’s an opportunity for people interested in volunteering at the station to find out more about the roles available. Alternatively if you think you can help Radio Nightingale and have the time to volunteer but can’t attend on Monday please contact the station on 01709 304244 or visit the website www.radionightingale.org.uk and complete the volunteer form.

MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

One of the most amazing figures from the world of music we play has to be Dionne Warwick. Celebrating 50 years as a recording artist, Dionne is a lady from an influential background. Her family were gospel singers, which led to her building her own group and a meeting which would add the glowing finishing touch to her career. Whilst singing in backing sessions, the award winning songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David took an instant like to her voice and hit after hit followed. Who can forget “Walk on by”, “Do you know the way to San Jose” and there were more collaborations with Bacharach and David such as “Anyone who had a heart” and “I just don’t know what to do with myself”. These were more known for their cover versions from Cilla Black and Dusty Springfield. Later hits included the classic tearjerker “I know I’ll never love this way again” and “Heartbreaker” and now she’s back again with an album simply entitled “Now” featuring both new and legendary songs given a new lease of life. We’ve got lots of copies to give away right across the day completely FREE, all week. Simply listen for the winning tracks, call when you hear one and you could be a winner.

LOCAL YOUNGSTERS GET INYERFACE

Hillsborough based INYERFACE ARTS are excited to announce 2 brand new music making opportunities for local youngsters. RockFace is a Monday evening singing group for young people aged 10 – 18 performing pop and rock songs in the ‘Glee’ style. The emphasis is all about having fun and singing the type of songs that young people themselves want to sing. For the very young Inyerface are promoting Diddly Tots, a Saturday morning music and movement group for the Under 3s and their busy Mums & Dads. Both sessions take place at the excellent Burton Street Foundation in Hillsborough. Formerly known as Inyerface Theatre Company the group was originally formed to provide live performance opportunities to children and young adults who might otherwise be unable to enjoy them. Inyerface is all about having fun and is proud to have a low cost no audition policy, promising everyone who wants to the chance to perform live on stage. Over 400 young people have performed in concerts and shows over the past 10 years and a number of ex-Inyerfacers are now starting professional careers in music and the theatre. Previous theatre productions include Disco Inferno, Fame, Return to the Forbidden Planet and last year’s amazing Romeo & Juliet – the Steel City Edition which rocked the Crucible Main House. In October this year Inyerface will continue with their tongue in cheek take on Shakespeare by presenting a new rock musical version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream set in Sheffield in the 60s. For the past 10 years Inyerface have produced concerts covering all types of music from pop and rock to classical, often working with local schools and the Music Academy and are delighted to now be able to expand their range of musical offerings working as part of the Sheffield Music Hub . They recently worked with All Saints School on a week long singing & songwriting workshop and will present Live & Loud 2013 – a classic rock night on April 27th and Songs from Movies & Musicals on July 14th. More details of Inyerface Art’s productions and work with young people can be found at www. inyerfacearts.com. or on Facebook.

HAMMERFEST 2013

Words by KT Evans

City centre based music festivals are all about one thing...joining forces and getting anybody who enjoys live music on board for a week of audible delights. Live at Leeds is exactly that. Similar to Sheffield’s Tramlines, The Camden Crawl or Manchester’s Parklife, Live At Leeds has a massive line-up of bands and acts itching to get themselves out into the public eye…and quite frankly, we can’t wait to see them either. Bring it on… With their main aim being to “celebrate the best in upcoming local bands alongside more established national acts,” Live At Leeds not only is platform for the very best this country has to offer, but also exposes musicians who may not normally have to opportunity to play to such eager and vast crowds. So, to theheadliners…One of the biggest names to spring out o the dance movement within 2013, Alunageorge is set to grace Live At Leeds with her own unique take on current chart music. Indie rockers The Pigeon Detectives have built up the ranks to become of the most celebrated alternative groups in the UK alongside Everything Everything, easily the most talked about groups within the music industry at the moment. Having recently been announced to grace Live At Leeds bank holiday celebrations, The Walkmen. With their alternative rock anthem “The Rat” an essential play within trendy hangouts, clubs and bars, these US rockers are all about bringing the atmosphere within every live show they perform. Darwin Deez, New York’s soul man and NE’s coolest dude will also perform alongside Little Comets and chart topping DJ’s Rudimental. So, for the weekend rundown…Friday 3rd May will see a free seminar held by The Unconference at Leeds College Of Music, ran by industry professionals and a fantastic insight into entering the industry side of the music world. Saturday 4th May, the main event will require a wrist band priced £22.50 and is held across 12 stages throughout Leeds City centre. With hundreds of bands eager to perform, we guarantee this will be one of the best Saturday’s you’ve had for a hell of a long time. Sunday 5th May will see the Vaccines perform at Millennium Square although this a separate event therefore a £25 additional ticket purchase will be needed in order to gain access to this show. Finally, Monday 6th May is Live At Leeds annual football tournament at Foals Soccer Centre, Kirkstall Road. Get involved! Check out www.liveatleeds.com for more info.

REVIEW Words by KT Evans

Hammerfest 2013...what a weekend. An almighty salute to head banging, mosh pitting metal supporters, the annual metal mecca is all about dedicating a solid four days to sinking your teeth into the very best of what the genre has to offer. Held at Pwllheli based Haven holiday park Hafan y Mor, the festival has outgrown its original setup of Prestatyn, Wales, however with heaps loads more room and an ear splitting line-up to accompany, we can’t quite think of a better way to kick off the jam packed festival season of 2013. Having been announced to headline the festival over six months ago, Hatebreed, the Godfathers of hardcore were always going to split opinion within the Hammerfest masses. However with energy, charisma whilst seizing the reins and one hell of a set of lungs on him, lead vocalist Jamey Jasta made like any seasoned professional would to mould the audience into a diehard Hatebreed massive. Although their set was cut short having been stranded at Heathrow airport, their half hour performance time transported us all into the twisted world of one of the heaviest hardcore packs the world has to offer. Friday 15th also saw Evil Scarecrow seize the second stage on first day processions to an absolutely sold-out audience. Unlike your standard on-stage outfit (jeans, t-shirt, trendy jacket if we’re lucky) Evil Scarecrow instead prefer to dress up as monks, bishops, axe men and…you guessed it, Scarecrows to tantalise their crowds. Their own unique performance of “Heads, shoulders, knees and toes” may have been slightly unorthodox, however coming from a group who won’t be seen without various spikes and swords on their person, we’ll call this relatively normal. Saturday 16th saw Swedish doom metal band Candlemass headline the last day of Hammerfest, a group who are no strangers to the very epicentre of brutal rock. Having performed throughout the world to some of the most infamous stages on the planet, Candlemass brought with them destruction as they pulled down processions with their high voltage on stage personas and massively epic sound. Surrounded by beautiful scenery and housed within the foot hold of Snowdonia, Hammerfest 2013 is as iconic in its situation as it is with its famous line-up. Whether a true metal head or simply along for the ride, we recommend this festival to anybody who enjoys alternative rock combined with beautiful setups. Tickets are now on sale for Hammerfest 2014, Book Of The Dead at www.hammefest.co.uk . Check out the website for further pictures, interviews and exclusives from this years festival.

round-up by stuart renton

I never thought it would happen but I’ve actually run out of things to talk about. I’ve bitched about every pointless zelebrity under the sun and the fact is that they’re not making vacuous fame-starved reality show rejects like they used to (although I hear the cast of Hollyoaks is about to get a load of fresh meat so it’s not all doom and gloom on that front). Frankly, I’m short of inspiration and my enthusiasm is somewhat flaccid. Sure, I could do what I do every other week, grab my column and start pounding away until something exciting happens. I could even look at some naughty websites to get my juices flowing… but I just don’t feel like looking at Heat Magazine or Perez Hilton’s latest gossip snooze-fest about who’s wearing what shoes… Sure, I could talk about Katie Price – but slagging her off is like shooting fish in a barrel (the IQ’s about the same), but Jordan’s been done endlessly and everyone’s sick of hearing about her. Mind you, the rest of the newspapers are in the same boat. Now Bieber has fu… left the UK, the papers are starved of stories to the point they’re resorting to headlines of Kate Middleton with her heel trapped down a grate. Now, I know you’ll join with me to say that’s truly riveting stuff and we all want to read about that on the front page. Of every newspaper. For two days! But, like my column when TV gold, Splash returns next year, it’s all got a bit harder this week as the Government finally decided on the format of the Hacked Off proposal which, in a bizarre sort of u-turn, now creates an independent body which will oversee the media to ensure it doesn’t breach any policies in terms of acceptable guidelines (as set out by the Government). It’s supposedly about protecting the public interest, but we know that’s just Nu Coalition butt-speak for “we couldn’t get away with binding the

media so it only prints what we want it to, so we’ll fool you into thinking we’ve abandoned that idea and now we’ve got an organisation (we secretly control) which will diplomatically ensure the media only says what we want”. This means that while it’s not apparent – yet – the Government will be able to get away with murder and there’s nothing anyone will be able to do about it. In fact, we won’t even hear about most of their more unsavoury goings-on except through smoke and whispers on rebel underground Internet channels (the joy of conspiracy theorists everywhere!). The truth of what’s going on in the UK will be hidden and while this won’t happen right away, you can be sure it’s only a matter of time. Cameron might want to install himself as the Ultimate Ruler of the Universe, but while he sees himself as Overlord Supreme, he’s really more Chicken Supreme (and even that contains 70% horse meat). Up until recently, it’s always been the Government’s policy to make a huge fuss over some hugely popular policy change, while secretly slipping something undesirable through at the same time which is lost in the furore. Now they won’t need to be as sneaky. Simply bind the media with a restraining gag, and you can even spank them with a table tennis bat at the same time. Democracy my butt cheeks! Sadly, I won’t be able to say anything like that in the coming weeks once this new body passes. In fact, I probably won’t be able to say half the things I say as they’re contrary to the Government’s new media laws (which they’ll continue to update in secret and as it’s all bound to this new organisation, the media won’t be able to report on it). Can you see where this is headed? Like Jordan’s lady parts, it’s not a good place to find yourself without backup (or at least a very large plank)… On reflection, I haven’t been bound in this much red tape since I went to a really strange house party in the 90s that had a huge bowl of hamsters in the hallway. You know you’re going to have an odd night when instead of running water, the bathroom taps dispense an endless flow of lubricating jelly. But that’s a story for another time…

SP RT

angler’s corner by Clint Walker

This week I have been experimenting with Marukyu krill products; if you haven’t yet seen one of the worst kept angling secrets (where have you been?) then you really should look into it..... Krill is a small marine organism which varies in size from 2mm to 6cm and forms the building block on which is based much of the food chain within our oceans; it is harvested in huge numbers under sustainable quotas and can be used as foodstuff for humans too; believe it or not, individual krill can live for up to six years! Properly processed, krill offers a wealth of possibilities in angling; as a liquid, it can be added to casters, corn, pellets or used to mix ground baits, but it’s as a powder it really comes into its own as an additive! I’ve added it to corn with limited success, but over maggots, it’s deadly! If you add a couple of teaspoons to a pint of maggots, then freeze them, the powder is absorbed by the maggots as they cool and then thaw offering oodles of extra attraction! On a method feeder in cold temperatures, I think it’s without equal...... I’ve also used krill powder with Pepperami sausage in pva mesh; usually, the oils in Pepperami make it messy to get out of a Korda Krusher, or affect the pva in addition to sticking to your hands, so a dollop of krill powder coats the meat, allows it to be used without mess and helps form a tasty mouthful on the lake bed which constantly leaks krill bits.....easy! What about boilies? Glug your boilies in krill liquid, then leave until sticky before dunking in krill powder and air drying for 24-48 hours until hard. The krill powder then forms a layer and you are left with a ‘bon-bon’ effect of a fluffy outer coating, a sticky layer of krill liquid and then the boilie itself; how can any fish resist? In ground baits or stick mixes, both the liquid and the powder offer unrivalled pulling power; add a splash of liquid to the water you are going to mix your bait with, stir into to give krill flavoured water and add to your groundbait to ensure perfect distribution. A sprinkling of krill powder into the dry mix beforehand will give an even bigger boost and if you watch fish over the bait, they really get into it! In truth, like any additive, the only limit is your

LOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEK SPONSORED BY CHAMPS

imagination; with Marukyu Krill, there are both fine and coarse options, and a new range of ‘Credence’ baits to accompany the existing krill ranges, so I’m confident that this year my catch rate will soar. I’ve used it on all sorts of baits, and there are some I’ve yet to try, but it is making a difference to the way I fish...I’m putting a lot more thought into how I use my additives, and I’m having lots of fun doing it; isn’t that what fishing is all about? Try and let me know how you do....

racing form by Timelord

Doncaster: 2.05 William Hill – No. 1 Downloaded Betting App Handicap, Class 2, 4yo+, 0-100, 6f: Scott Dixon’s Thunderball seems to like this track and often runs well here. This was the case last October when he had several of these behind when winning a £10,000 0-105 handicap off 8st 5lbs on soft ground. That day he beat Ancient Cross into second by a head in receipt of 5lbs and, although 1lb worse off this time, is taken to confirm that form on ground that suits. The main dangers look to be Ancient Cross, Spinatrix, Shropshire, Farlow, Prodigality and Jamaican Bolt. 2.40 William Hill Spring Mile Handicap, Class 2, 4yo+, 1m: This is the consolation race for those that don’t get into the Lincoln. The horse that appeals most to me is Ismail Mohammed’s Educate who seemed to come on leaps and bounds at the back end of last year and who could still have more to offer. He ran really well to defeat Deepsand in a heavy ground York handicap last October and could still be on the upgrade. The main danger ti his chance may come from the Tom Dascombe stable whose trio of Anton Chigurh, Chosen Character and Gaul Wood all hold very respectable chances. Two others that could be troublesome to the selection are Yojimbo and Lochantanks. 3.15 William Hill – New ipad App Cammidge Trophy, Listed, Class 1, 3yo+, 6f: Winner of a Listed race in France last time out Eton Rifles gets the vote to land another prize at this track. It could prove a close call though with Switcher, Our Jonathan, Jamaican Bolt, Humidor, Capone, Effie B and Inxile all running well when last seen. 3.50 William Hill Lincoln (Heritage Handicap), Class 2, 4yo+, 1m: With only 22 able to run 49 of the current 71 entries are due to come out, leaving something of a guessing game as to who will run. Richard Fahey won the race last year with Brae Hill and has this one entered again along with six others, including the top weight Majestic Myles, giving him a strong hand to play. The one that appeals most of these is Justonefortheroad who has an almost 25% wins to runs record, goes well on soft ground and seems to run well in early parts of the season. He is sure of a run and will have the services of Frederick Tylicki to boot. Of course in a race like this there are many dangers, of which Eshtibaak, Educate (if getting a run here rather than the 2.40), Chosen Character, Yojimbo, Lochantanks, Anton Chigurh, Billyford and Gaul Wood look to present the most potent threats. Newbury: 2.20 EBF/Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, Mares’ Novices’ Chase Finale, Handicap, Listed, 5yo+, 2m 6f 110yds: Tara Rose gets the nod for this one ahead of Ixora, Alpine Breeze, Double Silver and Marie des Anges. 2.55 EBF Ultima Business Solutions Mares’ “National Hunt” Novices’ Hurdle Finale, Limited Handicap, Listed, 4yo+, 2m 5f: With none of the participants troubling the clock last time out it is left to their lifetime ratings to determine a selection. Queens Grove has the top lifetime figure and is therefore the selection. First reserve place goes to Too Generous, followed by My Legal Lady, Hidden Identity, Wilde Ruby and Polly Peachum. 3.30 Ultima – Best Company Award Winner Handicap Chase, Class 3, 5yo+, 0-130, 3m 2f 110yds: Mr Moss is chosen in the hope that he can get the better of Ballyoliver, Inside Dealer and Cedre Bleu. Others that could figure prominently in a pretty open event are: Dover’s Hill; Bradley; Rhum; Loch Ba; Mister Marker; and Alderluck. Selection Summary: (In case of absences reserves are shown in order of preference after the first choice selection) Doncaster: 2.05 Thunderball, if absent Ancient Cross then Spinatrix, Shropshire, Farlow, Prodigality, Jamaican

MILLERS HAVE A MARE AT CHELTENHAM The Millers were defeated 3-0 by fellow promotion hopefuls Cheltenham Town in difficult conditions at Whaddon Road. Steve Evans made one change to the team that managed a 2-2 draw at Wycombe Wanderers in midweek, with Craig Morgan returning to the heart of the defence to make his first appearance since the two sides met at New York Stadium in November. Morgan’s inclusion meant Dale Tonge assumed a place on the bench, leaving captain Johnny Mullins to fill the void at right back. Meanwhile, Cheltenham boss Mark Yates honoured the gentleman’s agreement between the two managers by leaving former Millers midfielder Jason Taylor out of the squad, following his move to Whaddon Road in January. The hosts almost made an ideal start to the game when Sam Deering found himself in behind the Millers’ defence inside the first minute, only to be denied a good chance of the opener by an excellent saving challenge by Mullins. Yates’ side threatened again when McGlashan raced onto a Michael Hector through ball only to see his centre turned behind by Claude Davis with Paul Benson lurking in the area. The Millers first real chance arrived on 13 minutes when Lee Frecklington unleashed a fierce effort from 30 yards, which looked destined for the top corner before the intervention of Scott Brown who tipped the ball over the crossbar. The Robins came within inches of taking the lead after McGlashan’s run and pass found an unmarked Pack on the edge of the area, whose effort cannoned back off Andy Warrington’s post an away from danger. The hosts continued to apply the pressure and almost opened the scoring when a hopeful long ball drew Warrington from his area, before Benson collected

the goalkeeper’s weak clearance and lobbed an effort goalwards that crept just wide of the post. However, the deadlock was broken in spectacular fashion when Kaid Mohamed’s cross from the left found McGlashan unmarked at the back post, who lashed his powerful volley into the far corner of Warrington’s goal to give Cheltenham the lead. Yates’ side persisted to threaten from the flanks and almost doubled their advantage when Benson flung his body at a Billy Jones cross, only to see the ball evade his outstretched leg in the six yard box. The Robins did get a second moments later from that same left-side and it was the influential Mohamed who again provided the assist. The pacey winger reached the byline before his cut back was casually stroked into the bottom corner from the edge of the area by Marlon Pack. Sido Jombati had an excellent chance to extend the hosts’ lead immediately after the break with a Cheltenham corner eventually falling for the fullback who skewed his effort well over the crossbar from ten yards. Millers boss Evans introduced Daniel Kearns at half-time in place of David Noble in an attempt to add some flair to the attack and the winger almost made an instant impact, just missing out on making contact on a teasing Ben Pringle cross at the back post as the visitors surged forward. The Millers continued to press but were denied any notable chances by a resilient Robins’ back line. A speculative Frecklington half-volley from 25 yards served as one of their best opportunities of the game, but the midfielder failed to trouble Brown in the Cheltenham goal. Cheltenham substitute Byron Harrison would’ve got his name on the scoresheet minutes after his introduction had he not be denied by a superb save from Warrington, whose point blank save temporarily averted the danger for the visitors. However, the resulting corner caused problems in the Millers defence allowing Elliott to smash home from close range, adding the gloss to the scoreline on 84 minutes. The Millers were defiant despite the deficit and continued to search for a goal, coming close through Nardiello following a driving run and shot, which was well saved by Brown at his near post three minutes from time.

ROVERS CANT GET UP POMPEY A fine but cloudy afternoon welcomed Portsmouth to the Keepmoat Stadium. A win for the Rovers would consolidate their position at the top of the table but Portsmouth desperately need points to have a chance of avoiding relegation. Gary Woods resumed in goal for the Rovers, with Neil Sullivan on the bench. The Rovers defended the South Stand end in the first half. The Rovers won a free kick on their right in the second minute from which Brown headed wide. But apart from the Rovers winning a corner after five minutes the first twenty minutes were spent in midfield in a fairly even contest. In the 20th minute the Rovers were awarded a free kick on their left for a foul on Spurr. Cotterill placed the ball to the far post where Jones headed wide. Then, at the other end Portsmouth won a corner but this was cleared. In the 26th minute, Cotterill crossed left footed from the right, with the ball going across the face of goal but Paynter just failed to get to it. Two minutes later and Coppinger put Paynter through on goal but his shot hit the oncoming keeper and bounced clear. Straight away the Rovers came again through the middle before passing out to husband on the left. Cutting in he hit a twenty-yarder wide of the far post. Pompey were still active in midfield and on the half hour they attacked down their left and won a corner but they made a mess of what was probably a training routine and the Rovers cleared. Then Butler, with a free kick on the Pompey right, overhit the ball and it went out at the far post. In the 37th minute, a good move down the Rovers right let Cotterill cross low to the near post where BROWN stabbed in. Having established a lead the Rovers took command to the break without any further incident of note. The Rovers got the second half underway and attacked but were held. Four minutes in and a corner to the visitors was caught by Woods and cleared. In the 55th minute Walker, for Pompey, tried to catch

Woods out by trying his luck from 45 yards but he was well wide of the mark. A couple of minutes later and a corner to Pompey came to nothing. On the hour, husband worked hard to win the ball on the halfway line and having done so set off down the left flank and won a corner. Then, a long throw by Spurr, from the Rovers left, into the Pompey penalty area, was headed on by Jones before coming out to Cotterill. He drilled in a good shot from 20yards that Eastwood could only beat away and Jones, following up, kneed it over the bar. In the 66th minute, Connolly, for Portsmouth, fired high over the bar with a free kick from 25yards. Minutes later Racon fired in a cracker from distance that Woods collected at the second attempt. Then, in the 75th minute, what had been threatening for ten minutes happened. The Rovers didn’t clear their lines and Agyemang, on the Portsmouth right, crossed low to the middle for WALLACE to fire in from close range. Minutes later and Wallace cut in from the right but fired wide of the near post. Then Connolly put wide from 25yards. As time ran down the Rovers got back into the game. A thunderous drive from Furman was pushed round a post by the flying Eastwood and Cotterill, on the Rovers left, shot wide of the far post. The Rovers attacked to the end of four minutes of added time but the referee blew for time with the score at one goal apiece.

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2 12-13 BLADES UNDONE AT LAMEX MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

United’s string of six clean sheets and seven matches unbeaten was unceremoniously ended at Stevenage on Saturday. A Dani Lopez hat-trick was the catalyst for Stevenage’s win and leaves the Blades without a victory at the Lamex Stadium in three visits. Danny Wilson named an unchanged team for the visit to Stevenage but did recall Porter to the bench at the expense of Ironside. The home side made a concerted effort from the kick-off, backed by their fans, and an early shot from Lopez was deflected wide after Robson had been dispossessed. There was a further issue

for the Blades to deal with on ten minutes when Murphy limped off after treatment and was replaced by McFadzean. In the early stages the Blades struggled to find a rhythm and took 18 minutes to register a chance, McDonald well off target with a first time effort after Kitson laid off Flynn’s cross. McDonald, however, did better in his provider capacity soon after, threading a pass to put Flynn in the clear but the winger’s shot was turned around the post by goalkeeper Arnold. A couple more opportunities fell to United in the following minutes around the half hour mark, but Robson’s header from McMahon’s cross was at Arnold and Kitson’s first touch let him down when Doyle found him with a forward pass. Stevenage also had chances. Long saved from Grant, unknowing the striker was offside and Haber was slipping as he attempted to turn home a Akins cross. The home side, however, did snatch the lead as half-time approached. LOPEZ managed to get through Collins on the right before poking beyond Long at the near post. It could have been even worse for United as there was still time for another effort. Buoyed by his goal, Lopez tried his luck from 25 yards and his shot was dipping in before Long used all his inches to tip over

the crossbar. United made a second change at the break, Forte taking over from Flynn, whilst a run from McFadzean livened the Blades fans and put the home side under pressure - it proved to be a false dawn as Stevenage doubled their lead on 50 minutes. A half-cleared corner was chipped back into the penalty area by Mahon and as the visiting players looked towards the linesman, LOPEZ stole in and beat Long with a controlled volley. Robson, now operating from the right, almost got on the end of a Forte poke forward and from the resulting corner, Arnold touched over a Maguire header. The Blades went closer still on 53 minutes from a McMahon cross but McFadzean’s looping header hit the underside of the crossbar and a defender on the line before being cleared. Lopez had a hat-trick chance, which flew wide before he completed his treble on 64 minutes. There was a spell of unpleasantness with the referee speaking to both captains before Stevenage turned defence into attack, the ball being shifted to the right for LOPEZ to smash home his third from the edge of the box. It got worse for the Blades as Stevenage quickly added a fourth. This time AKINS was allowed space to cut in from the right

and although Long got a hand to the shot, the goalkeeper was unable to stop the ball trickling into the corner of the net. Robson was booked for lunging in on Dunne as the Blades looked frustrated late on. Long was forced to save from Grant and to prove it was not United’s day, a two-on-one situation failed to bring a consolation, Arnold saving from Kitson after Forte laid off. Referee Russell waved away United’s penalty appeals when McFadzean went down under a Comminges challenge which summed up the visiting side’s luck and the three minutes of added time was not going to crucial as the Stevenage victory was already sewn up.

WILSON GETS FOCUSED GAFFERS NOTES www.sufc.co.uk

Danny Wilson says he is focusing on getting a positive response from his players after Saturday’s disappointing 4-0 defeat at Stevenage. Speaking of the Blades performance, the Gaffer gave an open and honest account of his team’s shortcomings and is demanding a radical response when Brentford provide the opposition in front of the Sky cameras next week. United’s surprise reversal at the Lamex saw the Blades drop to third place in League One after the Bees netted a late winner against Preston at Griffin Park. Wilson commented: “We have saved up all our mistakes for one game and defensively we were second best throughout. “All four goals we conceded are very poor from our perspective because we have given the opposition to much time on the ball. “Stevenage will think they thoroughly deserved their four goals and the win but that performance from us wasn’t good enough and mistakes have cost us the game, that is taking nothing away from Stevenage. “These results and performances can happen though, what is important is how we respond, that is what will give us the best tonic. “We have a fantastic game against Brentford at Bramall Lane to prepare for now and we know we must improve drastically. “It is fair to say everyone is annoyed and frustrated at the manner of the defeat, we haven’t been completely outplayed, we have contributed heavily to our own downfall and that is particularly disappointing.”

Sheffield Wednesday News 2012-13

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 12-13 BLUEBIRDS DOWN OWLS MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk

Goals either side of half time gave Cardiff victory over Wednesday in a game of few chances at Hillsborough. The Owls matched the league leaders in most areas of the pitch but the Bluebirds had the edge in front goal and that proved the difference. Don Cowie’s opener right on the stroke of half time was a turning point after a first half that saw the two sides largely cancel each other out. Matthew Connolly then put the game to bed with a headed goal just after the hour. It was an important match for both sides, the Owls looking to keep their distance from the drop zone and continue the form that saw them defeat promotion-pushers Leicester last week. Meanwhile, table toppers Cardiff were hoping to further their lead at the summit with a win. The Owls started brightly and Jeremy Helan forced an early save from Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall. There were few clear cut chances for either side for the majority of the opening 45 minutes but it was the Welsh outfit that broke the deadlock on 45 minutes. A Craig Bellamy corner fell to Cowie, who fired a deflected shot past Chris Kirkland to give the visitors the advantage at the break. With the hour mark approaching, Dave Jones switched to a 4-4-2 formation. Gary Madine replaced Danny Pugh and took up position alongside Leroy Lita in attack. But the change of formation was to no avail as the Bluebirds doubled their advantage on 65 minutes. Peter Whittingham’s free kick found

Connolly unmarked in front of goal and his header left Kirkland with no chance. The Owls almost hit back immediately when Miguel Llera’s goal-bound free kick forced a stunning fingertip save from Marshall. A second free kick from Llera brought another save out of Marshall on 80 minutes and the Spaniard’s set pieces seemed to be Wednesday’s biggest threat as they looked to salvage something from the game. But the Bluebirds’ defence held firm despite some late pressure and the visitors took all three points back to Cardiff. Owls: Kirkland, Buxton, R Johnson, Gardner, Antonio (Maguire 78), Helan (J Johnson 67), Pugh (Madine 55), Lee, Lita, Prutton, Llera Unused substitutes: Bywater, Taylor, Semedo, McCabe

FREE KICKS DOWNFALL OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Dave Jones says the two Cardiff free kicks that won the visitors the game was the only difference in a tight affair at Hillsborough on Saturday. Goals either side of half time from Don Cowie and Matthew Connolly did the damage as Wednesday slipped to defeat at the hands of the league leaders. But the manager says there was little to separate the sides in the bigger picture. He said: “There was nothing in the game apart from the two set pieces and

that’s what has done us. “Our keeper has barely had a save to make and neither has their keeper but it was that kind of game. “It was bitty, it was scrappy and it you got the feeling that an ugly goal would change the game. “We showed our naivety at times and It is really frustrating because we have come a long way in a short space of time. “We have played five of the top sides recently and taken six points from 15 and we know it could and should have been more. “But Cardiff are an efficient side, they are not at the top of the table without good reason.” Jones issued an update on Michail Antonio, who was stretchered off towards the end of what proved a bleak afternoon for Wednesdayites. He said: “Michail has popped his groin so we will wait 48 hours for any swelling to go down before we can assess him.
