NEW £1.8 MILLION MUSIC HUB IN SHEFFIELD Sheffield will be a city moving to a new beat as the local authority launches a massive project to get more young people playing music. Sheffield City Council has received a £1.8 million funding boost from the Arts Council to create a ‘Music Education hub’ – an umbrella group of people, projects and events providing music opportunities city wide. The Hub, which was officially launched on Sunday, 24 March, could benefit up to 62,000 children and young people across the city. It will be made up

of the Council’s music service, music organisations, schools, teachers, parents and young people, working together to seek out and provide the best music opportunities – including musical ensembles, singing, instrumental lessons, events and more. Councillor Jackie Drayton, Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families, said the Music Education Hub could transform music in the city– and provide wide reaching benefits for children, young people and families.

She said: “This is an exciting new initiative, by working together in partnership we can ensure that all young people have the opportunity to make music together, regardless of where they live or who they are. “Music can play an important part in helping us achieve our ‘big ambition’ that is ‘every child, young person and family achieves their full potential – by raising expectations and attainment and enabling enriching experiences’. Music can build confidence, inspire all and create pathways for employment and career

opportunities for all. “Britain hosts a thriving music industry and Sheffield in particular is known for its musical heritage and innovation. I am particularly pleased that the inspiring musician, Eliot Kennedy, has agreed to be the Music Hub Ambassador for Sheffield - this is an exciting opportunity for the City.” An interim board of music and education professionals, young people and parents/ carers will initially run the hub and decide how it will be governed in future. The Arts Council

grant replaces the Government’s Music Education Grant which has supported Sheffield Music Service since 1999. Sheffield’s hub bid has received national recognition by the Arts Council as one of three examples of good practice – outlining a number of novel approaches to be delivered through recognised expertise, from young people’s inclusion in hub governance, to the new Music Hub Champion School Network - an innovative approach to developing relationships with schools.

Copley’s Column

This week has been excellent on the entertainment front where, consistent with my policy of seeing only the better artistes, I have been regally entertained on two evenings. On Wednesday evening, a night when there is usually no entertainment on offer, I was pleased to attend a charity evening to benefit the Sheffield Animal Centre, a branch of the R.S.P.C.A. at the Abbey Hotel, organised by Larry Anderson. Larry does not enjoy the best of health these days, forcing him to end a very successful career. However, his excellent vocals were still in evidence as he opened the show. Next up was a particular favourite of mine, Rachel Raynor, who performed an acoustic set accompanied on guitar by Nigel, husband of another outstanding singer, Karen Gilmore, who I previously heard sing on a night out with my great friend Sunny Daye. Both these lovely girls were outstanding on the night, with not a backing track to be heard. Next up was showbusiness veteran, Adrian Paris, who has been singing to a high standard for as long as I remember. David Garforth, son of legendary sixties star, as lead singer of top band The Fortunes, was seen to raise an eyebrow as Adrian covered his dad’s big hit ‘You’ve Got Your Troubles’. Adrian’s voice has not diminished with age. Adrian was followed by award winner, Gary Phillips, who as usual instantly connected with the audience with his relaxed friendly style, and is always one of the first to put his hand up for a worthwhile charity. Not surprisingly, he turned in a sterling performance. Another artiste who is always prepared to turn up when her busy schedule allows was on next, Diana Edwards, who has sung as Agnetha, the blonde one in the world’s number one Abba tribute band. She is also in a very successful duo, Agnetha and Frieda, with fellow band mate Sarah Fearnley. Diana is a quality experienced performer and always adds to the kudos of the evening. The final artiste of the evening was a revelation to me. How I remember Ashton when he first started singing whilst working at the Co-operative store in Dore village. He was a novice in those days, but twelve years in the business, when he has always invested in the best sound and light

systems have transformed him into a first class confident performer. He obviously noticed my jaw drop during his first song; such was the quality of the performance making him nearly laugh. Three hundred and thirty three pounds was raised on the evening, and I have been asked to mention that donations, particularly clothes are urgently needed at the branch shop on Chesterfield Road, Woodseats. As usual, I would like to express my admiration for all artistes who appeared on the night, giving their time and talent free of charge. I am indebted to Rachel Raynor for sending me the photographs of the evening, and I am happy to include a picture of Rachel and Karen Gilmore. After such a fabulous evening, it was hard to find somewhere to go locally on Saturday evening that would be an anti-climax, but the solution was found when I discovered that the excellent Cassi Kennedy was appearing at Newbould Working Men’s Club, which is reasonably close to my girlfriend’s house. We were joined by Diana Edwards, who was enjoying a rare Saturday night off. Cassi was superb as usual, showing off her powerful vocals with a wide range of material which included covers from Adele, Fleetwood Mac, and by popular request, a few numbers from her Meatloaf tribute. We took Caron’s dad with us, explaining that he would enjoy Cassi, as she was very raunchy. He discovered the veracity of this when she playfully came off stage, mid song, and sat on his knee, to his obvious delight.

Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS

My girlfriend’s psychiatrist told her that I’m paranoid and jealous. I’m sure he’s just saying that to get her into bed. ------------------------------------------------------------I treated my last patient of the day, closed the surgery and walked into town for a quick pint. As I ordered a drink, a man collapsed at the other end of the bar, having a heart attack. His wife panicked, and in tears shouted, “Is there a doctor in the house?” Unfortunately for the man, there was nothing I could do to save him. If she’d asked if there was a doctor in the pub, my pedantry wouldn’t have even come into it. ------------------------------------------------------------I was digging a hole when my mate approached. “What are you doing?” he asked. I said, “I’m digging a hole to bury my dog.” “Well,” he persisted. “What are the other three holes for?” I said, “They were going to be to bury my dog in, but they weren’t big enough.” ------------------------------------------------------------I recently got a new job as a bus driver. My boss said to me, “Today you start on the oneman buses, meaning you do both jobs. Collect the fares and drive the bus.” Later that day the bus hit a tree. I was collecting the fares upstairs at the time of the crash. ------------------------------------------------------------I’ve just seen an advert in my local newspaper. ACCOUNTANT NEEDED! £35,000 - £40,000 So I phoned them up and said, “The answer is -£5,000.”

The

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

Dreams (Part Two) This is the second part of dreams. Certain things can help you dream, especially crystals. Some crystals can invoke lucid dreaming or assist in restful sleep, alleviating nightmares. The quality of your sleep is important as dreaming is an effective method for cleansing the unconscious and addressing problems. Dreams often contain messages from your inner self that are pertinent to what is happening in your life at any given time. I have compiled a list of dream stones and their properties. Amethyst - helps with insomnia. Put two stones under your pillow to bring about pleasant dreams, or rub it across your forehead to bring relief from headaches. Agate - offers protection from bad dreams. This stone comes in a variety of colours and in ancient times was placed at the head of a sleeper to give rich and varied dreams. Malachite - creates vivid dreams. It stimulates your imagination and makes your memories appear more real. Labradorite - One of my favourite stones. It is brown but shines like a rainbow. It is a daydreaming stone that shows us our real goals and intentions. It is also the thinker’s memory stone, which is what I use it for. Dream Symbols Finger - To dream of burning your fingers signifies envy or fun. To dream you lose your finger in an injury means that you will suffer a loss in your personal life. Fingernails - To dream of long nails signifies pain and to dream of having your nails pulled off indicates a great misfortune. Flies - To dream that a swarm of flies is pestering you means that you will be betrayed by someone you trust.

Flowers – To dream of holding or smelling flowers signifies joy and pleasure. White flowers can mean obstruction and failure in business and red flowers are an indication that life is about to be difficult for you. Jewels - Jewels may represent the qualities that we value most within others or ourselves. Diamonds express incorruptibility, integrity and perfect wisdom of the true self. Sapphires are the jewels of heaven and symbolize hope, joy and aspirations. Rubies evoke the hot blood of passion. NEWS & INFORMATION

CLOCK CHANGE SMOKE POLICE AND ACTION ALARM DRIVE BACKED FRAUD TO TEAM UP TO http://www.syfire.gov.uk/2686.asp COMBAT FRAUD AND Firefighters in South Yorkshire are backing a national drive to get the public to test their INTERNET CRIME smoke alarms when they put their clocks forward. Fifteen children died in accidental fires across the UK last year, and in South Yorkshire 50 injuries were caused by dwelling fires. But South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue is determined to prevent as many deaths as possible and make sure people test their alarms when the clocks change on 31 March. A working smoke alarm can buy families the valuable time they need to get out, stay out and call 999. But you’re more than four times as likely to die in a fire if you don’t have a working alarm. Kevin Ronan, Head of Community Safety, said: “In South Yorkshire we’ve been to more than 100 house fires in the last three years where the alarm had either been removed or the battery was missing or flat, putting the safety of the residents at risk. “Don’t take the chance on your family’s life. Promise to test your alarms this clock change weekend, and let’s make it a household habit.” Smoke alarms should be tested regularly, ideally once a week. South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue offers email or Twitter reminders to the public to test their smoke alarms. To sign-up to the free service, visit pressthebutton.co.uk

PUBLIC ASKED FOR VIEWS ON FIRE SERVICE RESPONSE TIMES http://www.syfire.gov.uk/2692.asp

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue (SYFR) is asking the public for its views on whether firefighters should have a target response time for reaching life-threatening call-outs. The three-month public consultation was launched by the governing Fire & Rescue Authority today. Fire deaths and injuries have fallen to record lows across South Yorkshire even though the service has never met its self-set target of reaching 80% of all life-risk incidents within 6 minutes, prompting Authority members to agree to the request of fire chiefs to review the current response time standard introduced in 2006. The service has put forward three response time target options for public consultation to run until June 24th as part of its Operational Plan 2013-15, and a final decision will be taken by the Fire Authority later in the year. 1. No response time standard – simply an undertaking that the fire service will get there as quickly as possible with the resources available. 2. Single County-Wide Standard – keep a response time target for the whole of South Yorkshire, but review the current target of 6 minutes which was introduced in 2006. It is difficult for the public to hold us to account against a target we are unable to reach. In many other emergency services the target is 8 or 10 minutes. 3. Risk Based Response Standards –have different response time targets for each area depending on the risk level. We hold risk information which is based on historic incident data for house fires, population density, deprivation and other relevant factors. SYFR’s Chief Fire Officer Jamie Courtney said: “We always aim to get to every incident as quickly and as safely as possible and that will never change, but given the Government cuts to our budget and the possibility of further cuts, we are genuinely concerned about the impact on the frontline. “We want to have an honest and open debate with the people we serve about exactly what they expect from us in terms of a response time, and what we realistically can deliver with the resources available. The full consultation document will be made available later this week.

http://www.southyorks.police.uk/news-syp/ police-and-action-fraud-team-combat-fraudand-internet-crime

This week sees the four police forces of Yorkshire and the Humber team up with Action Fraud – the central point of contact for reporting fraud and financiallymotivated Internet crime. Action Fraud is being launched nationally on 1 April, but from 25 March members of the public from across the region will be encouraged to report fraud and Internet scams directly to Action Fraud via www.actionfraud. police.uk or by calling: 0300 123 2040. The four forces have been working together to ensure that the new reporting system is adopted consistently throughout Yorkshire and the Humber and, in doing so, remain committed to tackling fraud, scams and conartists at a local and regional level. Action Fraud, run by the National Fraud Authority, will be the main agency for people to contact if they are a victim of a scam or fraud offence – both in terms of making reports and accessing support and prevention advice. Reports taken will be used to formulate a national picture as well as being passed on to other law enforcement agencies for further investigation. Speaking of the initiative, Detective Superintendent Steve Waite, Head of Intelligence for Regional Operations, said: “Action Fraud will enable a better sharing of information about the nature and extent of fraud across the region and beyond, which will assist all law enforcement partners in tackling the different types of fraud affecting our local communities and businesses. “In non-urgent situations people will be encouraged to contact Action Fraud as the most appropriate agency. However they will still be able to report fraud to their local force, which will take action if, for example, a possible fraudster is at their door.” During the last financial year it’s estimated that around 1,000 crimes reported to South Yorkshire Police would have been recorded by Action Fraud. Commented Graham Wragg, manager of South Yorkshire Police’s Economic Crime Unit: “Action Fraud will improve the service that the police give to victims of fraud. “We will be able to analyse fraud offences and those who perpetrate it across the country rather than just locally, thereby enhancing our ability to detect and prosecute offenders. “Where there are viable leads of enquiry, Action Fraud will task the relevant law enforcement agency to investigate. Where the offenders are present at the scene and fraud is being perpetrated, police will always respond and victims should ring 999. “I’d encourage members of the public who have concerns about fraud to visit the Action Fraud website, where they will be able to access fraud prevention advice.” Fraud is a serious offence that affects thousands of people across the UK each year. However in many cases, falling victim is avoidable if people consider some simple rules to help protect themselves against fraud: • if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If you didn’t enter a lottery for example, how can you have won it? • ask questions. If someone is legitimate they won’t pressurise you or be elusive • be very wary about giving your personal information to strangers or providing money up front • Always check the real company’s details against the ones you have been given, and ring them direct if you are in doubt.

TIME RUNNING OUT FOR HEALTH AND WELLBEING BOARDS TO CONSIDER NEEDS OF DYING PEOPLE http://www.ncpc.org.uk/news/half-new-nhsboards-ignoring-end-life-care

With just two weeks to go until England’s 152 Health and Wellbeing Boards take on new legal responsibilities as part of the Government’s health reforms, almost half have failed to set out what they will do to meet the needs of dying people, according to research published today by the National Council for Palliative Care (NCPC). The report, ‘Does dying matter to England’s new Health and Wellbeing Boards?’, finds that of Boards who have made public their strategy only just over half (63 out of 117) had explicitly discussed end of life care. This is despite the fact that on average almost 3,000 people each year will die in the local authority area covered by a Health and Wellbeing Board. The report also raises concerns that with just two weeks to go, 35 of the 152 (23%) Health and Wellbeing Boards still have not publicly made available even a draft strategy. Today’s report follows earlier research carried out by NCPC in autumn 2012 which called on Health and Wellbeing Boards to seize the opportunity to join up support for people who are dying. However, although six Boards have subsequently updated their strategies to include end of life care and others have since published their strategy for the first time, three boards have since removed references in their strategies as to what they plan to do for people who are dying. NCPC will be contacting the Health and Wellbeing Boards who have not considered end of life care and who have not produced a strategy to offer help in the form of information, support, toolkits and examples of good practice from other boards to assist them to address their omission before it negatively impacts on local people.

Providing quality facilities at affordable prices....

39 Station Rd, Renishaw, Derbyshire, S21 3WF Telephone: 01246 435 226 www.sitwellarms.com WELCOME to our third edition of The Wedding Guide. I hope you have all managed to battle on through the snow and that it hasn’t damped your spirits. There doesn’t seem to be an end to the bad weather, it seems like the longest winter on record, but whatever the weather, I am sure planning your day will be special. The Mercury held their very own wedding fayre at the Copthorne Hotel on Sunday 3rd March, and what a brilliant day it was. Over 20 exhibitors were on hand to help and advise brides to be on their big day. All guests were welcomed by the red carpet, canapés and a glass of bucks fizz on arrival, and a string quartet played in reception. Two fashion shows were the star attraction, and overall the day was a great success. Our next wedding fayre is on Sunday 15th September at Hillsborough stadium. Exhibitor places are still available, please call The Mercury for details. A winter wedding, a summer marquee, a church or civil ceremony, whatever you have chosen to celebrate your wedding our guide is here to help you with news, views and helpful advice. This is an interactive guide; we want to hear your stories so if you have some advice to pass on, please let us know so we can all share your views on this page. I want your highs and lows, the good and bad. Send me your success stories, or photographs of your special day to mandy@ mercurynewspaper.co.uk Most of the service providers on this page say we

have put them firmly on the map by being part of this monthly feature and opened up a whole new world, so come on all you brides to be there must be someone on this guide who has got what you are looking for. The average wedding is said to cost £20,000 and I can imagine how easy it is to get carried away reaching that amount. Obviously, you don’t have to spend that much, some venues are offering the whole package for under £2000 so it can be as extravagant or as intimate as you want. Moving onto our pages this week, many of our advertisers in this feature have been in the business for a number of years and can offer you experience, value and customer service, but mainly their aim is to help make your day the most memorable and special occasion. I have had the pleasure of working along side most of these people and have witnessed their dedication, passion and commitment to making your day special. Venues are generally one of the first things on your list to select, as this will be the main focus of the event. They are also booked up well in advance, up to 3 years in some cases, so it’s never to early to view them. Large, small, grand or intimate each wedding is different and each venue can offer different things depending on your requirements. It is always good to have a couple of venues in mind and go view them, more than once if need be. The proprietor will be more than happy to show you around and talk through your requirements until you are completely happy.

The Sitwell Arms at Renishaw are proud sponsors of our Wedding Guide and they provide quality facilities at affordable prices. It is a beautiful 18th century coaching inn with beautiful surroundings, perfect for the photographs. The Old Rectory in Handsworth is set in beautiful surroundings, whether you want a buffet or a banquet. This venue can cater for weddings ranging from 25 to 150 guests. Looking for a venue with a difference? The Kiveton and Wales Parish Hall offer you the whole package for one affordable cost, so check them out. Onto bridal wear now and Michelle has changed the name of her showroom in Neepsend from Lilly’s to Loveona but the friendly warm service remains the same. Michelle will offer you a warm welcome at her contemporary showroom. A lot of personal touches and thought has gone into this venture and you will feel immediately at ease with the friendly, professional manner in which Michelle treats her guests. You will arrive as a client and leave as a friend. The next Wedding Guide, will be out on Wednesday 24th April. Good luck with the planning and don’t forget to call our experts for friendly advice and make sure you tell them you saw them in The Mercury See you next month Mandy

THE RETURN OF DEVONSHIRE MARKET

The return of Devonshire Market is set to provide a boost to the city economically and culturally. Once again in partnership with Exposed magazine the re-launch event will be the first of many months of markets which originally grew in popularity locally with its mix of eclectic makers, designers, sellers, gourmet foods, amazing cocktails, live music, and DJ’s, that brought the feel of London’s Portobello Road to Sheffield’s city centre. “We’re really excited to be re-launching Devonshire Market.” Said Sam Wherrett of independent organising company Big Live Event Limited. “As a small

business it can be really challenging to get your product to the masses cost effectively, and this will again prove to be the perfect opportunity.” “With a great turnout at the original events, we want Devonshire Market to be a monthly destination unlike any other in the city. We spent a number of hours at the original market, eating tasty food, drinking delicious drinks and relaxing with friends. It was just a great atmosphere where people could picnic or lounge on the green, or sit back with a mojito.” Come join us to celebrate our wonderful city. Fancy a stall? the

Strines Inn

“Where you can combine a day in The Peaks with excellent family dining” OPEN ALL DAY FROM EASTER Despite being within Sheffield’s borders, The Strines Inn could be a world, and an age, away. Nestled amongst breathtaking moorland scenery, it is a local landmark within the Peak District National Park, yet only 20 minutes drive from Sheffield centre. Over the centuries The Strines Inn has gained and maintained a well-deserved reputation for good quality traditional English home made food, much of which is made on the premises and cooked to order. The menu includes firm favourites: - the pies are particularly popular, and visitors never fail to be impressed as to how giant the giant Yorkshire Puddings actually are! There is a generous choice of vegetarian dishes, and for children we have a special menu with the same quality foods in smaller quantities to promote healthy eating. At the bar is a Specials Board that is updated daily providing the latest choices of soups, pies, fresh fish and desserts as well as the current one-off dishes. It really is refreshing to visit The Wick At Both Ends (henceforth TWABE, for the sake of my word count) with a clear head. The last time I was here, I was treated to a flambéed lemon cheesecake shot which also doubled up as a Men in Black ‘Neuralyzer’, causing me to lose all memory between the hours of 11pm and 6.30am. This time though, sober and strained from work, I stumbled into TWABE to sample the new menu and was immediately tranquilized - not by the alcohol – but by the dreamy low-ceiling, the nooks and crannies strewn with entwined fairy lights and ivy, the muted candles and dark wood flooring. I thought to myself “Wow, it’s good at night and it’s great in the day…I wonder where they get the name from?” TWABE is more Division Street than West Street but I’m glad it’s chosen the latter as its home. It’s a bit like Caitlin Moran writing for the Times: she doesn’t just take the easy Grauniad route and preach to the converted. TWABE is the same sort of thing and West Street is all the better for it. My guest ordered a selection of 3 small plates for £10: welsh cockle pies, mini cottage pies and a carpaccio of duck. I decided to gallantly sample the mushroom burger (£6.95) with an extra helping of Y-Fenni mustard and ale cheese. Now, I don’t want to get too brown-nosey about the burger but this one does beat almost all of the offerings from dedicated burger restaurants. I’ll try to tell you why because after all, that’s why I’m here, isn’t it? It’s the bun – which is so soft and brioche-like, it’s the chips which – shock horror – are included in the price and it’s the piece of information, underneath the burger selection, that doesn’t just say “add cheddar” but permits you to add ANY cheese from the cheeseboard to your burger. We were similarly impressed by the Welsh cockle pies which, once you broke through the delightful crispy pastry on top, were full of creamy sauce, bacon, leeks and fairly obviously, cockles. These were the pinnacle of the show and are highly recommended. The cottage pie was, well, a cottage pie and it would be silly to expect anything other than a homemade-tasting pot of beef and peas in a gravy sauce (the rich, red wine element being slightly lost) topped with mash. Nothing bad about that though and certainly a safe choice. And finally was the carpaccio of duck, which was delightful in itself with the port and cherry reduction but - and now I’m being really picky didn’t need the extra garnish of glacé cherries; a bit like a supremely good-looking bloke wearing too much expensive aftershave. To finish off, we took 2 of the 3 desserts (which can cleverly be used as 1 of your 3 small plates for £10): cheesecake with a raspberry coulis and freshly baked cookies with ice cream. The other option is baked chocolate fondant served in a teacup, which for me completes perhaps the most faultless trio of desserts on offer in any restaurant, any where. The fair prices, the quiet, the warmth, the good music, the service and the quality and choice of the food mean that, for me, TWABE is a Sheffield meal you can’t afford to miss out on.

BLAST FROM THE PAST AS THE JOSIE’S CROWD RE-UNITE!

Despite the atrocious weather conditions, we were able to go ahead with the Josie’s Reunion Night at the Mercure St Paul’s Hotel last Friday night – and what a great night it was! Over 250 braved the snow for a great night out, and we are grateful for the dedication and determination the crowd showed in making their way to the city centre! However we do appreciate many people were unable

to make the trip for reasons beyond their control – and as a consequence we have decided to add another event to our calendar. Provisionally scheduled for June/July, we will re-create the format that proved such a success last week. Once dates are finalised, we will invite anyone who was unable to attend to choose between the Summer and Autumn dates (November 21st is already confirmed) and we

will exchange unused tickets for one of these events. Keep an eye on the Mercury, visit www.mercurynewspaper. co.uk, or follow us on Twitter or Facebook, and we hope to publish details in the very near future. Once again, thanks for supporting our events and we look forward to seeing you all soon! The Mercury Team

1st ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS AT THE HILLSBOROUGH THIS SATURDAY When Alison Newbold took over the reigns at Sheffield’s Hillsborough Hotel exactly one year ago, few could have predicted the enormous success she would bring to this locally famous hostelry. Alison’s previous experience was in helping to run the bar at The Hillsborough after several years in the pub and club business. Not only did she take on the hotel’s full management, she went on to launch the Wood Street Brewery, based on the premises, and then take over the running of The Roebuck, one of Sheffield city centres landmark pubs. This is managed by Alison’s daughter Jodie, who is currently overseeing a major refurbishment. These achievements would be a success story at any time, but in today’s challenging trading conditions they are almost miraculous. Together with partner Chris and managers Michelle at the Hillsborough, Jodie at the Roebuck, and the teams at both pubs; Alison not only runs the pubs and the brewery but also the great fresh food menu, the six high quality, en-suite hotel rooms, the catering for weddings and other functions, and the booking of live bands, a regular feature of The Hillsborough which today is one of the best quality entertainment venues in the area. To celebrate the first anniversary this Saturday, 30th March will see a performance from live Sheffield band Refugee, and Alison is including a Birthday Party Free Buffet. Alison says, “We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers, friends and families for their help and support.” Customers old and new are invited to join in the celebrations. To find out more about The Hillsborough’s and Wood Street Brewery’s services contact Alison or Michelle at: The Hillsborough Hotel 54-58 Langsett Road Sheffield S6 2UB Tel: 0114 232 2100 E: info@hillsborough-hotel.co.uk www.hillsborough-hotel.co.uk

JAGERMEISTER LIVE TOUR REVIEW 18/03/13 Words by KT Evans O2 ACADEMY

If the prospect of a 100,000 plus capacity festival is a tad too daunting for you, why not try a small time festival, held around the country and catered to accommodate the needs of spectators who may not fancy the hustle and bustle of a three day weekender. Radstock festival is exactly that. Held at Liverpool Academy on 30th March, their line up not only boasts a handful of bands at the very top of their game but also a vibrant location to match. Whether you’ve seen Radstock festival in the news, throughout twitter or simple never come across the name before, this premium one day event promises to be one of the most exciting days in the festival calendar. Headlining and easily the showmen of the rock world, The Blackout are primary headliners for Radstock 2013. With energy and charisma in bucket loads, lead vocalist Sean Smith is a certified party animal and will no doubt put on a killer show for the masses. Also included on the bill is Don Broco. Having emerged from the alternative rock scene in Bedford, On Broco are rapidly becoming this years hottest band with a string of singles and recordings in their pipeline. Secondary headliners and one of the finest hard rock bands to emerge the scene, We Are The Ocean have walked the infamous stages of rock with their performance at Download festival 2012. Although a change up in line-up which resulted in no screaming vocals, We Are The Ocean have a fan base to rival the chart toppers alongside a repertoire to match. Having been somewhat of the radar since the release of their second album back in 2012, Yashin are also set to play radstock. One of the biggest cult bands in this country, Yashin are all about putting on memorable live shows…something which they will no doubt deliver this weekend. Also on the bill for Radstock Festival 2013 includes Southern screamers Bury Tomorrow, Scotland’s Bleed From Within, US exports and producers of some of the finest rock metal hits Red Jumpsuit Apparatus alongside Polar, Sonic Boom Six and With One last Breath. Check out the full line up at ww.radstockfestival.co.uk aswell as ticket and festival info. See you in the pit.

Jagermeister…or “hunter-master” if translated from German to English seems to have an effect on all it touches. Whether it stains the hell out of any white material it manages to get split on, turns innocent drinkers from respectable human beings to crazy party animals or simply supplies an eye watering headache if drunk in vast amounts (always), Jagermeister is not only the trendiest brand about but is also a mighty fine supplier of live music. Kicking the Jagermeister live tour off in our very own Steel City, Heights, The Defiled, Gojira and Ghost were on the cards at an almost over-capacity filled O2 Academy. With each venue platforming the brand / record labels underground bands, Herfordshire’s Heights performed with pride as they showered the audience with fierce bassline riffs and edgy vocals…hell they may not exactly be on the same theme as the nights headliners Ghost, although this certainly did not reflect upon their sterling performance. Next up, The Defiled, who having recently been signed by Nuclear Blast, are all about putting on colossal live shows. Their music may not be quite as elaborate as their image, although new single “Sleeper” packs an almighty fine punch to the ear drums, highlighting the Southern five piece standing loud and proud to deliver a set which begs to be even longer. Gojira aka French progressive metal heads came next in the firing blocks, a group who spark as much hype from their name as they do whilst in the depth of performance. Lead vocalist Joe Duplantier oozes passion through every pour of his body, whilst taking on the role of puppet master to cleverly contort the crowd into an almighty Gojira army. Their 40 minute set was full of intricately woven breakdowns alongside tormented melodies, an indication as to why Gojira are one of the most successful groups to appear out of the European market. Headliners and no doubt suppliers of a fair few nightmares, Ghost clearly don’t do things by halves. Emerging on stage in their full Catholic robes and head dress regalia, we didn’t quite know whether to throw open our arms and pray to the almighty Swedish heavy metal group or simply run in fear throughout their 90 minute set. Hats off to the stage managers who created a backdrop to rival The Vatican (a full scale stained glass window and candelabras showering the venue alongside smoking incense sticks) an explanation into the elaborate lives of Ghost. Ok so we may not be able to see their faces or expose thier identity, however Ghost are all about putting one a ‘hell’ of a show to anybody who has the balls to watch.

TRAMLINES FESTIVAL CONFIRMS 2013 RETURN

ticket offer will be available. Festival goers can sign-up to Become a Tramliner on www.tramlines-org.uk to get access to a limited number of weekend tickets, priced at just £15.00 for all three days of music. Other than this, there'll be no presale tickets available, with all day tickets on sale on the door at the venues and stages. Festival Director Sarah Nulty commented: “We have worked hard to deliver a fantastic diverse line-up this year and we are confident that our festival goers will support the festival with the new ticket price. We've kept the cost as low as possible and at just £6 a day, we know our offer makes us one of the most competitively priced festivals out there. The Become A Tramliner campaign has been designed to give something back to our loyal fans who've made Tramlines such a wonderful event over the years. Without them, Tramlines wouldn't be half the fun it currently is!” Tramliners will also be the first to hear about new additions to this year's line-up, as well as getting access to Tramlinersonly VIP ticket giveaways and competitions from artists, friends of the festival and sponsors. A combination of factors have led to the new ticket model including the loss of Nokia as sponsor, the reduced council budget, the costs for the major venues of putting on bigger shows, and increasing safety costs relating to an ever growing audience. Free family entertainment will remain on offer around the city and most of the city's pubs will be putting on a show that can also be enjoyed for free. With a steadfast music programme over three days, Tramlines 2013 is expected to attract a greater number of fans from outside the city as it steps up another notch to become a destination event for credible musos from across the country.

The UK’s biggest inner city festival, Tramlines, returns to Sheffield for its fifth year on Friday 19th July to Sunday 21st July with a bigger and better music programme than ever before. Last year’s Tramlines saw over 150,000 people turn Sheffield into one massive festival over three days, creating the feel and atmosphere that rivals any green field festival site. Although line-ups won’t be announced until the end of April, festival bookers have confirmed there are lots of new additions for 2013. 70 of the city's music venues and performance spaces will be pulling out the stops staging approximately 700 artists across Sheffield. Devonshire Green's Main Stage and the new-and-improved Stage 2 (formerly known as the New Music Stage) will be home to some of the most exciting artists around. There'll be an expanded dance music programme, curated once again by the one and only Toddla T, a Street Theatre area, and the welcome return of the Folk Forest, the Peace Gardens' World Stage, the Buskers Bus, the Weston Park party and the Blues and Ale Trail. In order to make this year's festival possible, for the first time ever, there'll be a £6 daily door charge to access the main stages and music venues (the ones who usually charge a fee to enter their venues). With the enormous diversity of music and activities on offer, Tramlines 2013 is amazing value for money. Valuing the crowds who have made Tramlines the unique, award winning festival it is over the years, a discounted

round-up by stuart renton

It’s only two weeks until the one thousandth issue of the Mercury and it’s no secret that I’ve been carrying the paper for the last couple of years. Literally ninety eight per cent of readers pick up the paper solely to read my column (while the other two per cent come to see the latest discussion on whether women really should be allowed in Working Men’s Clubs). The answer is of course, no, but if you’re an actual woman then I recommend posting your knickers in protest to the nearest Working Men’s Club immediately. It’s my firm belief that women should be restricted solely to the house and should only ever be allowed out of the kitchen on special occasions (like going to the local Satanist’s meeting or to abuse the elderly). If you are the kind of man who thinks it’s OK for women to integrate with the community then seek professional help immediately. It’s wrong and we BOTH know it! While the subject of allowing women autonomy to leave the family home (or more preferably even the bedroom) is a fascinating discussion the likes of which we haven’t seen since the topic “Does Hell Exist” on Sunday morning’s The Big Debate (in which Vanessa Madwoman told us that if we don’t worship Jesus we’re all going to hell (which, she maintains, is a real place, despite the fact that I’ve never seen it on a map. And I’ve looked. I’ve found Hull - which does seem to have many similarities. For example, you can still find Neolithic man walking the streets of Hull, so there could be something to this story). Anyhoo, I’ve got something so stimulating to discuss this week, you won’t have been this titillated since Jeanatte Cranky’s blazer popped open during a Royal Variety performance and showed the world that she may not be a lady but that’s she’s all woman! It’s the kind of hard hitting subject that’s bound to polarise the nation. And no it’s not even the rumours that ex-

Doctor Who Showrunner, John Nathan-Turner, used his position of power to have sexy time with the under age (which admittedly back then was twenty one). That non-story pales in comparison to what I have to discuss this week. So, what’s the main course on today’s smorgasbord of effrontery? Well, it’s the snow. Mr Frosty shot his wintry load all over the country this weekend, and unless you’re on life support, suffer from total sensory deprivation, or you’re an actual snowman, you may be vaguely aware that we got quite a lot of snow here in Sheffield. And, my god, people are going to talk about it. And talk about it. And talk about it. And, when they’re not talking about it, they’re complaining about it, and when they’re not complaining, they’re posting things on Facebook like: “F*cking snow – go away!” Sorry, but the snow is entirely non-sentient and even if it were alive and had important faculties like a brain and accompanying sensory network, I very much doubt it would list its hobbies as reading pointless Facebook updates about the inclement weather! Yes I know it snowed, but do I have to encounter an endless commentary about it every time I go online? I imagine a few of you reading this will have posted such updates, and I hope you’re hanging your heads in shame. But fear not, for I have a solution. Instead of taking our anger out on the weather, let’s blame the weathermen, who are clearly in league with the devil as we were promised warm weather and what we’ve got could shrivel the randy boy parts of Lucifer himself. Last year at this time we were all out in our string vests drinking Snakebite and lounging around in the Peace Gardens (or was that just me?); this year we’re all huddled around the fire at home lamenting the fact that there’s almost no gas left. And then where will we be. Erm… Actually, pretty much the same place we are now. Only colder.

angler’s corner by Clint Walker

The weather is not conducive to fishing at the moment, but I’ve had to get out and do a bit for a variety of reasons....number one of which is if I don’t, I’ll go mad!! I’ve been on a local commercial this week which I regularly visit as it offers a variety of options for product pictures, rig shots and catch images; I had some new bait to photograph, a pike to catch and a prototype bait on trial to evaluate, so a busy day was forecast despite the snow! A bitter easterly wind (has there been any other recently) promised a tough day, so I was very pleasantly surprised when my tip pulled round after less than five minutes with the prototype bait. I was using a different groundbait mix too; this time Marukyu EFG 142, packed with Sanagi (silkworm) and usually a warm water product....I hadn’t used it before though so wanted to have a trial run to see how it went. My run of good fortune continued with a string of carp, bream and chub which fell to a variety of Marukyu baits, and it was especially pleasing as the other two anglers on the lake shared five small fish between them before coming round to ask what I was using. We discussed our tactics and found we doing much the same thing, so I passed them a few spare JPz and asked them to give them a try; an hour later and both had upped their catch rates with a few more fish, and were keen to try Marukyu again. That is one part of being on the bank that I love; sharing tips and tactics and showing other anglers how Marukyu baits work....it’s not all one way though, I often learn more than I divulge as there are many anglers (probably every!) who know more than me! After a few hours of Marukyu madness, I moved over to Tara Lake, the recognised predator water, to try and tempt a pike to put a bend in a rod I had to review. The rod in question comes from the Savage Gear stable and I have to admit to being impressed; it’s one of the MPP (Multi Purpose Predator) range and has the ‘grunt’ to chuck out a 50g lure a fair way and allow the angler to feel every wobble and kick on the retrieve. Twinned with a small fixed spool loaded with 30lbs braid, I was soon into a small pike

of around 8lbs which finished off my photo sequence beautifully. I had another hour wandering the banks but saw no more action, so I stopped to chat to a couple of carpers who were also catching on artificial baits....plastic corn. It seems that imitation baits have really caught on in the carp world, so I’m hopeful that Marukyu will develop some in the near future....you never know! racing form by Timelord

After last week’s abandoned racing because of the dreadful weather this Saturday Doncaster will attempt to run the card that was intended for last Saturday. However, only two of the races are now scheduled to be shown on Channel 4. The remaining Channel 4 races come from Kempton on the All Weather track (2 races), Musselburgh (one turf flat race) and Haydock (4 races over the jumps), all subject to the vagaries of the unseasonably inclement weather. In case of abandonments I have this week given selections for more race meetings than usual. The nine races scheduled to be on Channel 4 are covered first. Kempton: 2.20 6 Places Each Way Grand National at Betvictor Magnolia Stakes, Listed, 4yo+, 1m 2f: The shortlist comprises: Cai Shen; Genzy; Lahaag; Media Hype; Miblish; Robin Hoods Bay; and Tinshu. Preference is for Robin Hoods Bay who ran close behind the improving Farraaj last week with Cai Shen just behind in third. 2.55 Betvictor.com Roseberry Handicap, 4yo+, 0-105, 1m 3f: My shortlist here contains (in alphabetical order): Buckland; Cry Fury; Eshtibaak; Greylami; Tappanappa; Tepmokea; Tinshu; and Vasily. Narrow preference is for Cry Fury but there isn’t much between the lot of them on my reckoning. Doncaster (selections repeated from last week): 1.55 William Hill Spring Mile Handicap, Class 2, 4yo+, 1m: Educate remains first choice followed by (in order of preference: Chosen Character; Yojimbo; Lochantanks; Gaul Wood; and Anton Chigurh.

3.05 William Hill Lincoln (Heritage Handicap), Class 2, 4yo+, 1m: At this point I see no obvious reason to shy away from last week’s choice so Justonefortheroad remains first choice followed by: Eshtibaak; Educate; Chosen Character; Yojimbo; Lochantanks; Anton Chigurh; Billyford; and Gaul Wood. Haydock: 2.05 Betvictor.com Tim Molony Handicap Chase, 5yo+, 0-130, 3m 4f: Quite a few of these seem to me to fairly closely matched. However, I like the look of Handy Andy who could be on the upgrade and gets the nod to go in again. To my mind the ones that could prove most troublesome are: Rapidolyte de Ladalka; Lively Baron; Abnaki; You Know Yourself; Posh Bird; Circus of Dreams; Emperor Concerto; and Et Maintenant. 2.40 Betvictor.com Handicap Hurdle, 4yo+, 2m 4f: On my figures Flaming Charmer ran well when finishing second to Le Bacardy at Newbury last time, and although Le Bacardy could only finish seventh in the Imperial Cup at Sandown afterwards that was on terrible ground, so Flaming Charmer gets the vote to score here. Lucky Landing and Parc des Princes are my idea of the ones likely to give the selection most to do. 3.15 Betvictor.com Levy Board Handicap Chase, 5yo+, 2m4f: This valuable chase looks a closely-knit affair to me. Eleven of them scored decent speed figures on their last outings and the others all have decent speed figures in their lifetime performances. Carrickboy scored at Cheltenham and is obviously in good heart at present but that performance will not have gone unnoticed so I am looking elsewhere. My top few on last time out figures are: Cloudy Too; Ohio Gold; Shangani; Tony Star; and Tap Night. Preference is for Cloudy Too ahead of Shangani and Ohio Gold. 3.50 Betvictor.com Handicap Chase, 5yo+, 2m 6f: This is another valuable prize and has attracted a competitive entry as a result. My shortlist comprises: Frontier Spirit; Reginaldinho; Balinroab; Noble Legend; Patsy Finnegan; and Simonside. There isn’t a lot between these based on my figures but top weight Frontier Spirit gets a narrow vote over the others. Musselburgh: 3.35 Totepool Royal Mile Handicap, 3yo, 0-100, 1m; This will most likely be fiercely run and to my mind presents a difficult challenge with several improving sorts from the back end of last season making their seasonal reappearances. Much might depend upon how well forward the various stable strings are and whether the bad weather has held them back in their work. Mark Johnston has most entries (6) followed by 2 each for Richard Fahey and Richard

Hannon. The remaining nine come from a variety of leading stables. Seven of the field have won on the all weather quite recently and others have been running well on that surface. I think that the Mark Johnston pair of Penny Rose and Pure Excellence could go well. Richard Fahey’s Khelman ran well at Doncaster last week and will be a danger to all, as will Ian Mc Innes’s Top Notch Tonto. On paper it looks a very tricky puzzle to solve but in what is a virtual coin toss I am going to side with Pure Excellence who was performing well on soft ground last term, has been in Dubai recently and could have avoided the effects of the bad weather here. Millers & Rovers News 2012-13

ALEX REVVED UP FOR EASTER Alex Revell is remaining upbeat despite the recent bad weather postponing last Saturday’s home game against Exeter City. The treacherous conditions haven’t stopped the firstteam squad training, though, and Revell is looking forward to the Easter programme. “We were in on Sunday and managed to get onto the pitches and have a good session today to build up to Friday,” he said. “Training has been good and we’re all looking forward to a big weekend.” The Millers entertain AFC Wimbledon at New York Stadium on Good Friday, before heading to Kent on Easter Monday to face league leaders Gillingham, and Revell understands the importance of the two fixtures. He revealed: “They are massive and we want to try and get maximum points from the next two games. “Obviously going down to Gillingham will be a tough game, but I think we should’ve beaten them when we were at home, so we can take confidence from that.” The 29-year-old striker reserved special praise for the club’s ground staff who have cleared the training pitch of snow and allowed the team to prepare as normal. “They have been brilliant. It’s allowed us to be able to train and do another training session.”

THE MILLERS TRIUMPH ROVERS NAIL IRON IN THE CENTRAL LEAGUE CUP Rotherham United Reserves continued their recent good form with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Morecambe in the Central League Cup. A brace from Daniel Nardiello and a further strike from Kieran Agard sealed a straight forward victory, watched by assistant manager Paul Raynor. “We wanted to get Daniel some more game time, and he got himself a couple of goals,” Raynor told www. themillers.co.uk “We felt it was important to get some of the lads who haven’t had a lot of time on the pitch recently some match time, and it proved to be a good exercise for us. “Nards took his goals extremely well, as did Kieran, whilst we got another 90 minutes into Scott Shearer so on the whole it was a good day.” The Millers fielded a mixture of professionals and academy prospects, with the likes of Craig Morgan and Kayode Odejayi also gaining some valuable match time. “Another 90 minutes for Craig which was important because obviously he has been out of action for a while,” added Raynor “These reserve games are ideal for keeping the lads ticking over, Craig isn’t the only one who has benefitted today, it was a useful exercise all round.”

With the country reeling after the snow fall of yesterday, Scunthorpe did well to get their pitch and the surrounding area cleared with the help of volunteers so that the game could be played. However, a freezing cold wind and grey skies could well be a portent of what was to come, hopefully after the match. The Rovers made one change to their starting line-up, Iain Hume coming in for Billy Paynter, who dropped to the bench. Scunthorpe were unchanged. The Rovers defended the Railway end in the first half and immediately went on the attack. A free kick was awarded to them on the right but Cotterill overhit the cross and the ball went out for goalkick. A corner was then won by the Rovers which was played past the far popst to Husband who shot from aboiut 12yards was saved by Johansen. Then, in the 5th minute, Cotterill got to the right corner flag before crossing low to the middle. The goalkeeper didn’t come for it and MIRFIN, trying to put it out put it into his own net. Continuing to attack, Cotterill crossed from the right in the 9th minute, Brown laid it back to Coppinger but his shot was blocked. The home team then went upfield and Ryan tried his luck from about 30yards but hit it high over the bar and over the Stand. Continuing to have the better of the play, Hume, for the Rovers, cut in from the right and hit a good left footed effort from the edge of the area straight at the keeper, who saved comfortably. A couple of corners to the Rovers followed over the next five minutes. The second one brought a header from Jones at the far post that was blocked on the goal-line, Hume recovered the ball but couldn’t get in a shot and the ball was eventually cleared. Scunthorpe then got to the Rovers end where Sodje shot wide from 25yards. Then Ryan hit the ball high and wide from a similar distance. Past the half hour and a throw in on the Rovers left was headed on by Brown for Hume to take it down the left but his shot from an oblique angle went past the far post. Minutes later and Lundstram chipped the ball for goal but put wide from just outside the penalty area. In the 39th minute, good work on the Rovers left led to the ball being played back to Jones on the half way line. He threaded a good low pass through for HUME to run on to and slot past the keeper. The home team hit back by going on the attack and maintaining it for the first time in the game. They were awarded a free kick about twenty-five yards out in a central position in the 42nd

minute. DUFFY took the kick and flighted it into the top corner of the net where Woods couldn’t get to it. The home team got the second half underway but three minutes in the Rovers went further ahead. A good build-up on the Rovers right led to Brown crossing to the far left where it was played back low to the middle for BROWN to slot in. A corner to the Rovers a couple of minutes later came to nothing. Scunthorpe then got into the game and won a corner that came out to Ryan, who shot wide. In the 55th minute, a cross from Quinn, on the Rovers right, was put out for a corner, which came out of defence to Husband but his shot was saved at the near post by Johansen. Minutes later and a poor clearance by the home keeper went straight to Brown. His shot was blocked and came back to him. He gave it to Hume in the middle but he side-footed wide. Past the hour and the home team won a corner. Coppinger got the ball and played it out to Spurr on the left. He took it on before shooting wide of the far post. Minutes later and Coppinger gave to Hume, who played it out to Husband on the left but his shot was saved. Scunthorpe won a corner, which came out to Ryan, with his shot deflected for another corner. In the 73rd minute after a good buildup Coppinger shot over the bar. The last ten minutes came up and Scunthorpe went for broke. In the 85th minute it paid off following a corner, the ball pin-balled about in the six-yard box before rolling over the line for a second goal to the home team. They pressed on and in the third minute of added time they won a corner, which came out to Ryan, who skewed the ball wide. Time went and the Rovers got the win they deserved.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE BLADES SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

Last week marked the 124th birthday of the Blades. At 7.30pm at no. 10 Norfolk Row just off Fargate (the offices of cricket stalwart and member of the Bramall Lane ground committee Joe Wolstinholme) on the second floor a group of like minded men met to discuss the success of the FA Cup Semi Final that had taken place on Bramall Lane on 16th March between Preston North End and West Brom, the considerable income that had been gleaned from it and, as a result, the possibility of forming a football club to play at the stadium starting later that year. Local luminaries such as Michael Ellison, HH Stones, Charles Stokes and the man who would become football’s first ever ‘Sir’ Charles Clegg passed the motion for the club to be formed and notices were posted in the newspapers the following day for potential players to out their particulars forward Sheffield United FC were born. * Next year sees our 125th anniversary - plans are already in place to mark this momentous occasion and more information to follow later in the year.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 12-13

SNOW JOKE SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Owls head groundsman Steve Kiddy has outlined the additional efforts required of his team given the current inclement weather. Like almost the whole of the country, Sheffield 6 has been covered with a blanket of snow over the past few days. But having kept a close eye on the forecast, Kiddy was expecting the cold snap and laid plans accordingly. He told swfc.co.uk: “We are always right on top of the weather forecast throughout the season and this is even more important in the winter, for obvious reasons. “We knew we would lose the training ground to the weather and that being the case, the players train at Hillsborough when possible. “Obviously, the manager needs somewhere for the players to train

outdoors and we’ve had the undersoil heating on, which has proved vital. “That has shifted 90 per pent of the snow, which allows the players to train in an outdoor environment.” Save an unexpected turn for the worse, Saturday’s clash with local rivals Barnsley at Hillsborough is not under threat, thanks in no small way to the efforts of Kiddy and the groundstaff. Kiddy added: “The snow is an inconvenience but something that we are prepared for. “There is a huge amount of extra work around the clock, both at the training ground and on the main pitch in these situations. “The weather is getting more and more unpredictable as each season goes by and it’s our job to prepare the pitch and the training ground the best way we can.” *The Owls are reminding supporters that anyone wishing to order tickets by post for the Barnsley game should do so by 3.00pm today (Tuesday) given the upcoming Easter holidays. Tickets for Wednesday v Barnsley are selling at the rate of almost 1,000 per day and the club are urging supporters to purchase in advance to avoid potential disappointment – particularly for group bookings. Tickets for some stands may not be available on the day but can be purchased in advance in person at the Owls Megastore, by telephone on 0871 900 1867 (£2 booking fee per person) or online at shop.sheffieldwednesday.co.uk

AIMING FOR NEW ALLOCATION IMPACT SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Chris Maguire is aiming to play a part in helping Wednesday successfully negotiate the battle against the drop and maintain Championship status. The 24-year-old striker has been limited to just two substitute league appearances for the Owls this season but is out to make an impact in the remaining nine games. With a huge derby against Barnsley at Hillsborough next-up, Maguire is keen to show what he can do with all still to play for in the run-in. He said: “There are nine left and as much as it’s been a disappointing season for me, it could end well. That would put me in good stead to kick on next season. “Hopefully I’ll get a run of games. I think a lot of people would like to see what I can do and I’m enthusiastic about showing people what I can do.” The ex-Portsmouth man has also featured four times in cup competition for Dave Jones’ side this term and believes he is ready for action if called upon. “It’s been a long season for me,” Maguire said. “I didn’t expect to go this long and not play in the league. I’ve only made two league appearances and they’ve both come off the bench. “I’ve been working hard in training and I’m hoping I can get that breakthrough. “It’s tough but you have to keep going and push for a starting place because you never know when you might get an opportunity.”
