Copley’s Column
The main topic of conversation at our weekly breakfast get-together at the Chantry Hotel was the recently deceased Norman Collier, whose funeral had taken place the afternoon before at St. Helens Church, Welton, Yorkshire. Two of our diners, lifelong friends of Norman, Bernie Clifton and Bobby Dennis had along with any famous comedians attended the funeral and both reminisced some wonderful hilarious stories of experiences with Norman Collier. I am indebted to Bernie Clifton for photographs of some of the celebrities taken at the funeral. Norman was born in Kingston upon Hull on Christmas Day 1925 and weighed in at a massive fifteen pounds four ounces and was the eldest of eight children. Obviously the size of mother Mary’s first born did not deter her from further procreation. At seventeen, he joined the Royal Navy towards the end of the Second World War and on demobilisation found work as a labourer. In 1948, on a visit to Hull’s Perth Street West Club, he learned that an artiste had failed to turn up and duly offered to fill in. He was now working at British Petroleum’s chemical factory, where he kept his co-workers entertained on a daily basis, which gave him valuable experience for his future career as a full time comedian on the northern Working men’s club circuit. He became nationally known in 1971 after a successful appearance at the Royal Variety Command Performance, but whilst making occasional television appearances, he was immensely popular on the club circuit and was revered by his fellow comedians an was described by Jimmy Tarbuck as ‘the comedian’s comedian. He will be best remembered for two routines ;the northern club compere with the intermittent microphone and his screamingly funny impression of a chicken with noises and gestures and movements second to none. His autobiography, ‘Just a Job’ was published in 2009, and is on my
‘must read list’ He lived in Welton, a village to the west of Hull with his wife of over sixty years Lucy, and was the father of three children and many grandchildren and an even greater number of great grandchildren. He died on the 14th March, at the ripe old age of eighty seven after a long fight with Parkinson’s disease. Celebrities attending the funeral to pay their respects to this wonderful talented comedian, and reputedly someone never spoke ill of anybody in his life included Bernie Clifton, Bobby Dennis, Roy Hudd, Cannon and Ball, Little and Large, Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown, Freddie ‘Parrot Face’ Davies, Roy Walker, Jimmy Cricket and Tom O’Connor, evidencing the respect he commanded within the entertainment industry. Eddie Large described him as the funniest man he had ever met in his life and stated that he had driven up from Bristol for the funeral but would have walked there for Norman. The world of comedy and entertainment is poorer for his passing. Rest in Peace. Speaking of nice people, we were pleased to attend the fortieth birthday celebrations for my pal Mark Finnigan, where the fancy dress theme was rock stars, the most popular being Freddie Mercury, complete with Hoovers. Boring old me went as a showbusiness journalist.
BIG REUNION Weekly Wit With... ALBERT RETURNS FOR CHRISTMAS SHOW SNODGRASS
Following the sellout of The Big Reunion Tour here at the Arena in May, we are thrilled to announce that The Big Reunion, featuring 5ive, Atomic Kitten, B*witched, Liberty X, 911 and Honeyz, will be returning for a second Motorpoint Arena show on Friday 13th December to bring you the cracker of all Christmas parties. Tickets priced £42.50 & £34.50 (subject to booking fee) are on sale now. The hit ITV2 show, the finale of which is due to air on Thursday 28th March, has joined the six charttopping groups as they reunite a decade after they ruled pop. From oblivion right back onto a stage in front of 3000 screaming fans, viewers and fans have witnessed every step of the journey as the six bands have reformed, rehearsed and returned to the limelight. After a sold out Hammersmith Apollo show in February that saw all six bands stun those lucky enough to get a ticket with their veritable pop extravaganza, the mega-tour will be hitting the UK for the first, previously announced arena run in May, stopping at 14 cities across the United Kingdom & Ireland. Now due to phenomenal demand, all six bands, will be hitting the road once again in December for the ultimate Christmas Party - a celebration to round off a phenomenal year. 5IVE (Ritchie Neville, Scott Robinson, Abz Love, Sean Conlon) Atomic Kitten (Natasha Hamilton, Liz McClarnon, Kerry Katona) B*Witched (Edele Lynch, Keavy Lynch, Sinead O’ Carroll, Lindsay Armaou) Liberty X (Jessica Taylor, Michelle Heaton, Kevin Simm, Kelli Young, Tony Lundon) 911 (Lee Brennan, Simon ‘Spike’ Dawbarn, Jimmy Constable) Honeyz (Celena Cherry, Mariama Goodman, Heavenli Roberts)

I phoned my wife today and said, “Pack a bag dear, I’ve booked us into a hotel for a few nights.” “Ooh, why’s that?” she asked. I said, “Well I’ve been playing poker all day, havent I!” “Really?” she asked again in excitement, “How much have you won?” “Nothing,” I replied. “I’ve lost the house.” -----------------------------------------------------------Turns out cod or haddock might not be what it says on the packet ‘ its a load of pollocks. -----------------------------------------------------------A rolled up umbrella and a man in a suit of armour with no arms, walked into a hotel reception. “Hello Sir, Can I help?” said the receptionist. “Yes,” said the umbrella. “Can you put me up for the knight?” -----------------------------------------------------------The cowboy lay sprawled across three entire seats in the posh theatre. When the usher came by and noticed this he whispered to the cowboy, “Sorry, sir, but you’re only allowed one seat.” The cowboy groaned but didn’t budge. The usher became more impatient. “Sir, if you don’t get up from there, I’m going to have to call the manager. The cowboy just groaned. The usher marched briskly back up the aisle. In a moment he returned with the manager. Together the two of them tried repeatedly to move the cowboy, but with no success. Finally, they summoned the police. The cop surveyed the situation briefly then asked, “All right buddy, what’s you’re name?” “Sam,” the cowboy moaned. “Where ya from, Sam?” With pain in his voice Sam replied... “the balcony.”

CLEAR FUTURE AHEAD FOR STEELERS FANS
6. ‘The mole had been working very hard all morning’ is the first line of which famous book?
Fans of the Sheffield Steelers are set for a clear future following a major investment in new facilities at the ice hockey club’s home rink. The Motorpoint Arena Sheffield, home of the Sheffield Steelers, is replacing the glass around the ice with new scratch-resistant Plexiglas. Plexiglas is a transparent, lightweight and shatter-resistant alternative to glass. It is part of a multi-million pound investment programme at the award-winning indoor entertainment venue. Stage one, which is currently underway, will upgrade the Arena roof for the first time since it opened in May 1991. The second stage of the investment, due to start in July, will see all 12,500 seats replaced with the same ergonomically designed seating that is used in London’s o2 Arena. There will also be new energy efficient lighting and external concourse doors. Sheffield Steelers player Drew Fata said: “The whole Arena investment plan sounds fantastic and I’m sure our fans will enjoy the extra comfort of the new seats and surroundings. I guess it will help being able to watch all of the game as well through the new glass being installed. “All of the Steelers believe that we have the best facility in the league, these improvements will just add to that. We want to be the best team playing in the best building. With the new video wall, the new glass, the seats it will be like playing in a brand new building. I can’t wait.” Arena bosses have chosen an historically quiet time in July and August to carry out the refurbishment work meaning the new Plexiglas will be ready to use for the Steelers’ 2013/14 season. Rob O’Shea, general manager at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield, said: “The investment plan will make a huge difference to the customer experience at the Motorpoint Arena. In particular, the scratchresistant Plexiglas will vastly improve the view for Steelers fans who sit on the lower tier. “The refurbishment work will be carried out during July and August, which is traditionally the quietest time for events, meaning the least impact on programming to maintain our position as the region’s premier entertainment venue. “We are proud to be home to the Steelers. Exciting changes are ahead for the club over the summer and we can’t wait to see the new-look Plexiglas in place ready for the 2013/14 season.” Further investment plans for the Motorpoint Arena are also planned and will be announced later in the year.

Local bands are coming together in support of children and young people’s charity SAFE@LAST for a night of fresh music ranging from funk and soul to indie rock, blues and folk acoustic. The event will take place at The Harley on 17th April and will include four local bands with their own music, who will be donating their time to the charity for free. Following the first event at West Street Live on 20th March – which raised over £100 for SAFE@LAST – this event has seen four new bands handpicked by the charity to represent the charity and help raise money for children and young people at risk through running away. The set list is as follows: Carl ‘On Fire’ Watkins, Jack Athey, Yarbo and Every Animal On Earth. Helen Pine, SAFE@LAST volunteer and event organiser, said “we wanted to take advantage of South Yorkshire’s musical talent and bands have
5
been so supportive of us in the past, we just had to go for it.” She added “the last event at West Street Live was a great success and we had some great support from the bands as well as from the public. Hopefully we’ll be able to see the same success for the next gigs if not more.” Fundraising events like SAFE@LAST Big Band Night and last year’s PLAY SAFE at Plug make it possible for us to provide the help and support we do from crisis to prevention, educating children and young people about the dangers of running away, and working with young people on the very edge of society who may not have any other contact with professionals to support and signpost them to appropriate services. Every Animal On Earth’s singer, Laura Thompson, said “It’s great to be able to play a gig that’s going towards something more worthwhile. It’s helping an important cause, rather than just making a few people tap their feet.” Following the event on 17th April, a third event will be held at The Greystones on Wednesday 1st May. The chosen bands for this event are Kid Conventional, Grand Old Ukes of Yorkshire, Ham Pocket and Dnae Wellington and the Indigo Sound Project. The night starts at 8pm with £5 donation on the door.

Dreaming of a cucumber may mean that you require a cigarette. Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis
Dreaming of Food We all love to eat our favourite foods but what does it mean when these foods appear in our dreams? Dreaming of meat may symbolise your overtly sexual side. Dreaming of eating meat suggests that you are bored with your current partner and want to try something different. For many people the smell of frying bacon brings back memories. If bacon features in your dreams, it’s association with nostalgia may represent a desire to revert back to your childhood.
Eggs are a universal symbol of birth and creation. A broken egg can suggests that ill health is coming your way, so look after yourself. Once used in preparation of sacrificial meats, butter symbolises a source of sacred energy. Butter may be associated with prayer or generally an urge to invoke the help of a superior force. I hope you have enjoyed reading the dream themed articles. Next week it’s ‘Dreams and Legends.’ Please phone for a reading on 078632353 or visit www. psychicglynis.com
Fruits appearing in abundance are a symbol of fertility. At a deeper level the fruit may signify a desire to be pregnant or fulfilment from creativity. Lots of celebrities choose fruit related names for their children. I can’t imagine anyone ever calling their child ‘Banana’, ‘Lemon’ or ‘Orange’ but you never know!

In Chinese tradition peaches are symbols of purity and immortality and consequently dreaming of the silky, velvet peach means that you will have a long life.
72 Upwell Street, Sheffield S4 8AJ
As the forbidden fruit through which Adam and Eve gained self knowledge resulting in them being thrown out of Paradise, the apple may symbolise a return to lost innocence. Stealing apples may indicate a desire for an affair and dreaming of apple pie can indicate rivalry within a family, especially if one person gets the bigger piece. Dreaming of grapes means that you have a free spirit and I would say, that you like wine! Dreaming of a banana skin lying in your path on the ground might represent your misgivings about proceeding with a particular task or enterprise. A common dream image presents a variety of vegetables in great proportion. This may reflect a desire for money. However, dreams that indicate a yearning to be rich may in fact reflect concerns about money or prosperity.

ROXANNE’S ROCKY HORROR DELIGHT! Just ahead of the tour coming to Sheffield, we were delighted here at the Mercury to get the chance to chat to Roxanne Pallett – former Soap Start turned singer turned ice-skating queen, (courtesy of reality TV shows Soapstar Superstar and Dancing on Ice) – who after Emmerdale has not only appeared in Hollywood films but is now respected for her work in live theatre – culminating in her present lead role as Janet in Richard O’Brien’s iconic cult classic – “The Rocky Horror Show” – which is stopping off in Sheffield from 15th- 20th April at the Lyceum! Roxanne was a regular on our screens after landing the part of feisty marriage wrecker Jo Stiles in Emmerdale – blowing apart the marriage of youngsters Andy and Katie Sugden in devastating fashion! Following on from the show, we saw a taster of Roxanne’s wider talents when she won the Soapstar Superstar competition with a surprisingly strong vocal ability, developed during her last year at university with her band Urban Angel.
More reality TV followed as she made headlines with her partner Daniel Whiston during Dancing on Ice, where the couple introduced the now-famous “headbanger” to the competition. Given the quality of her acting, singing and dancing, it is no real surprise that she has now gravitated to live musicals, via a number of TV and film roles, as well as some more serious stage roles in the interim, and she is absolutely thrilled to be part of what is now recognised as not only a classic musical, but also the ultimate interactive audience show! No wonder she told us “I daren’t adlib or get my lines wrong – the audience know the script better than the cast!” Nevertheless she readily acknowledges that each performance is unique – “we feed off the audience and each other – no two shows are identical as the crowd become part of the cast and the show itself – it really is a unique experience as an actor to be part of the phenomenon!” She went on “Please don’t ask me if this is my favourite role or whether I prefer live stage to TV – as an actress each experience is unique and it’s impossible to choose – however right now I can say I’m having the time of my life and I’m not looking forward to leaving it behind – but hopefully my next project will be just as exciting!” To book tickets call the Box Office on 0114 249 6000 or go online at www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk – but hurry!

Food Review: East and West 227 Abbeydale Rd, Sheffield S7 1FJ Laura from meanmuncher.blogspot.com Nothing is new; it’s all been done before. The Rolling Stones were the best rock ‘n’ roll band, the 1920s/50s/60s had the best fashion and Nokia phones are basically as good as technology is ever going to get. Sadly, the same can be said for the world of food: an Indian restaurant usually means a pickle tray to start, some curry and a side; an Italian means a thin-crust pizza or lasagne and a Chinese means chicken coloured in with a luminous orange highlighter. So, when you come across something a bit different, something that you don’t quite understand, it’s a bit of a shock to the system. East and West is a tiny, inconspicuous South Indian and Sri Lankan restaurant squeezed onto Abbeydale Road and is exactly that: a cuisine that until now, I was virtually unaware of. The neon sign à la ‘local takeaway’, the no-frills interior spotted with wonky tables, the toilet located outside, down an alleyway, and the metal school-dinner trays that each course is served upon might cause the typical restaurant-seeker to do a Dionne Warwick (walk on by, for the uncultured). However, if you’re feeling a little adventurous then East and West is just the ticket. I still don’t fully understand the menu – what is a starter and what is a main? Do these things even exist? Why do we eat three times a day? I don’t know! Stop asking me questions! To ‘start’ I had the Chilli Paneer (£4.25), which was a total dream and highly, utterly recommended: chunky peppers, onions, and this un-meltable cheese all smothered in the greatest sharp, zingy sauce. We then moved onto a Dosa, which is basically a large crepe, filled with whatever you like. It’s not quite a main and it’s not quite a starter – reflected in the price (£3.50 - £5.95) but it’s worth a try. We tried grated paneer and masala dosa, both of which were nice and tasty but could have done with a bit more filling to warrant the Saharaesque expanse of pancake. The brilliantly-titled Chicken Devilled (£5.50) for me, at least, conjures up terrific images of a world taken over by chickens, all led by a possessed rooster despot. Back in Sheffield though, this translates into chilli chicken and is a joy. I must point out that East and West is no longer a BYOB establishment and they enforce this new licensing very strictly (a woman left the restaurant because she was not permitted to drink her bottle of red onsite). Alcohol is for sale though and the bottle of wine we shared did the job nicely, so much so that my recollection of how the food tasted from this point onwards is slightly hazy. To finish, I ordered the Mixed Veg Uttappam (£4.95), which is described as a thick crepe. For me, it felt more like a solid omelette, full of chunky tomato slices and a few peppers but garnished superbly with herbs and a choice of three sauces to dip into. The gratification of eating out and being able to pick something like an Uttappam, in complete ignorance, is something I miss. This new world of guessing and road-testing unfamiliar dishes and liking them or not liking them is something that we so rarely see now. This owes to the authenticity of the food at East and West, marking it on the map as a must for any food lover.

CAMRA COMMUNITY PUBS MONTH
public. CAMRA has produced and distributed over 6,000 promotional pub packs across Britain to help pubs market what activities they have planned. The campaign follows independent research from CAMRA that shows that 42%* of people are using pubs less than they did a year ago. CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Mike Benner, Chief Executive, Ale, last week launched a month- said, “The Chancellor has become long celebration of British the toast of Britain’s cash-strapped community pubs following beer drinkers and we should now the scrapping of the beer duty be paying around 10p less per pub escalator and the first cut in beer pint than they would have been duty in a generation announced had the escalator remained in place in last month’s Budget. The aim of these campaigns is ‘to raise the profile of pub-going and increase the number of people using pubs regularly’. CAMRA is using Community Pubs Month to call for the industry, Government, local councils and consumers to back its campaign for British pubs by: • Asking local councils to include pubs protection and promotion policies in their local plans • Urging Government to build a package of support for community pubs including reform of planning law to protect viable pubs from
change of use and delivering legislation to re-balance the relationship between large pub companies and their licensees • Asking brewers and pub companies to back CAMRA’s Community Pubs Campaign initiatives throughout the year • Asking consumers to celebrate the end of the beer duty escalator in their local throughout April Mr. Benner said, “There is now a need for everyone to work together to help reverse the decline in pubgoing and put this great British industry firmly back on the map.” Community Pubs Month provides pubs with a national campaign to hook their promotions around and CAMRA will use the four pub campaigns during the year to work with Government and councils to bring in more measures to support the future of pubs. CAMRA is also urging the media to come on board and talk about the positive things pubs are doing for communities, highlighting the important role pubs play in improving community life. In the research pub-goers were also asked what types of pubs would encourage them to visit the pub more often. The findings were as follows: • Pubs that offer quality food and drink – 43% (40% male, 45% female) • Pubs that offer live music – 27% (24% male, 30% female) • More family orientated pubs – 24% (19% male, 29% female) • Pubs that offer more traditional pub games like darts, pool, skittles – 15% (18% male, 11% female) • Pubs that offer promotions – 15% (13% male, 16% female) • Free wifi and lap tops / PCs – 9% (10% male, 7% female) • Social networking pubs where you can socialise in a pub with a friend who is in a different town using video technology – 5% (7% male, 4% female) • Range of board games – 4% (2% male, 6% female)

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques
Radio Nightingale broadcasts to the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital. Most of our programmes are music based to help try and make every patients’ stay in hospital a little bit easier by providing entertainment that appeals to all tastes to help them recover. This week though I had a special guest on the programme - PC Andy Robinson from the Crime Reduction section of South Yorkshire Police. Andy spoke about ways to keep possessions safe through good awareness and some useful tools and gadgets to secure and mark items. Over the next few months we have some collection dates booked and need a little help to cover all the dates and times available. Could you spare a couple of hours to help raise much needed funds to keep the service broadcasting? All the events are on Saturdays, contact us for the dates and to discuss how you could help. This can be as a one-off or the start of a more regular volunteering opportunity.
MEATLOAF MAGIC MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
He’s one of the largest and loudest performers in rock, and as he gets set to retire we’re celebrating his music all next week and giving you the chance to win a copy of his finest work. Born back in 1947 in Dallas, Texas as Marvin Lee Aday, Meat loaf started off as an opening act for Van Morrison, and was actually approached to join Motown. He ended up appearing in the cast of the hit musical Hair in Los Angeles, which led to a chance meeting with producer Jim Steinman. It was from there he entered the cast of The Rocky Horror Show and The Rocky Horror Picture Show and history was made. YASHIN 30/03/13 RADSTOCK
If you have any news, reviews or events you would like featuring please email info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk
live REVIEW
Words by KT Evans
It would be a fair and accurate statement to stress that Yashin are one of the biggest cult bands in Britain. Smashing every single show they perform with their trademark fire ball passion, the Scottish hardcore pack rarely put a toe out of line with their polished and pitch perfect sets hitting the mark every time. This mentality was evident throughout their spanking live showcasing at Liverpool’s Radstock Festival 2013, one hell of a highlight to the weekend’s events. Radstock Festival, although still in its very premature years made like any seasoned event to deliver a line-up of head banging bands across three stages. With a show to match the highest stage they were placed on, Yashin did all they could to remain in the memories of all who witnessed long after their half hour long time slot. Opening up with “New Year Or New York,” the groups 2012 belter off their second studio album “We Created A Monster,” comparisons between Black Veil Brides and Medina Lake are always going to be lingering in the air, although whilst on stage, this is long forgotten. Instead, the Scottish five piece take us all on a personal journey through the past five years of their lives…whether “Stand Up” touches anybody who has ever lost faith in themselves or “Make It Out Alive” simply sparks up the inner dancing bug, Yashin’s connection with their audience is something really quiet unique. The main focus with in Yashin itself is the slap bang obvious point that the group have two vocalists…Kevin Miles the screams vocalist alongside Harry Radford, their cleans, Ok ok we could all stand here and argue how “emo” that is, with a definite distinction between raucous verses and bridges in contrast to melodic chorus lies. We could all stand here and argue that yes…but hey you wouldn’t have a leg to stand on. Yashin are all about creating a show not only intriguing to listen to but exciting to watch aswell, something with the quintet do with tremendous ease. If their gimmick is that they have two contrasting vocalists, then really Yashin should stand proud in the fact they can deliver both punch and hug at exactly the same time. But regardless of how they might sew their set together, ultimately…the crowd goes wild every time. Check out www.myspace.com/yashin for upto-date tour info, announcements and pictures. Radstock Festival returns next year so keep your eyes peeled.

RADSTOCK 30/03/13 O2 ACADEMY
REVIEW Words by KT Evans
O’h festival season…how we begin. Kicking off in late march through to the end of September, if you are still a newbie to the festival experience, we suggest you jump on board the band wagon right now…and if you beat our personal record of eleven in one year, we’ll forever be in awe of your dedicated nature to all that rocks. The very first Radstock festival not only raised a massive salute to the very epicentre of modern hardcore, but also allowed us all a day of head banging, mosh pitting and trying out very best (failing attempts) to vocally scream…never works… With three stages spread out over Liverpool’s O2 Academy, having two stages in one room meant that there were no clashes between stage one (the main headlining stage) alongside stage three which was held on the balcony over stage one… it all sounds far too complex to be enjoyable however this split stage setup acted as a point of difference for Radstock 2013. Although majorly annoying photographers who couldn’t get up to snap the awesomeness of stage three, this failed not to deter away from the power and energy omitted from up in the Gods. Swedish alternative rockers Tantrum to Blind made like Tarzan to scale the 20ft high balcony alongside Blitz kids who, as per usual, made us all want to get back and download their entire back catalogue instantly. The second stage at Radstock 2013 saw Bleed From Within, our favourite Scottish screamers perform a belter of a set. Lead vocalist Scott kennedy decided it would be a grand idea to literally walk on the crowd whilst mid song, welcomed by an audience far too large to squeeze into a room which should have been much bigger for the caliber of bands performing within it. Bury Tomorrow headlined stage two, although a lengthy instrumental check meant that they clashed with the headlining band, The Blackout on stage one. Showmen to the point where we’re not quite sure whether they are musicians or entertainers, The Blackout are the biggest mavericks within the music industry. Lead vocalist Seam Smith sparked booing, cheering and possibly even a brief crying session all within their sixty minute set…o’h and somebody proposed to their wife on the stage whilst The Blackout were performing. If you think that’s bizarre…you should see the pictures. Visit ww.radstockfestival.co.uk for the latest on the event’s line-up next year.Check out www. facebook.com/clairesimmonsphotography for pictures of Radstock 2013.
round-up by stuart renton
It’s April and the last of the wintry weather has finally departed. There may be more snow to come (if you believe the Satanist weathermen) but we don’t care about that as we’re all loved up on Chocolate and even the promise of twelve inches can’t scare us… until the sugar high wears off and we start feeling guilt and self-loathing at the six chocolate eggs we scoffed along with two packs of mini eggs and a box of Thornton’s toffee. And a Twix. I think we can safely say Easter is a time for overindulgence, but you know when you say something to someone and you really should have given the answer a bit more thought… Well, my mother asked me what kind of egg I wanted for Easter and when I said “surprise me”, she got me the vibrating love kind… I didn’t laugh (she didn’t even get me any batteries!). Although I am wearing it right now and it genuinely does touch the parts Cadbury’s can’t reach. Speaking of being touched… there were some unusual themed events going on in Sheffield over the Easter weekend. I was invited to an evening of Doughnut Punching on Thursday, which I had hoped was organised by Krispy Kreme… But when I finally found the venue at the top of a rundown block of flats, there wasn’t a sugary bread product in sight. And it gets worse because on Saturday I went to a Fudge Packing morning in aid of the local children’s hospice. That was a real eye-opener (and I’ll never get the stains off my jacket). And lastly, there was an afternoon of tit watching at Doncaster Baths, but I couldn’t make it, so I’ve no idea what went down. Call me naïve but I’m not entirely sure what kind of tits they’d find at a swimming pool… On the telly, The Voice is back and it’s just as crap
as ever. The show sees four outrageously weird celebrities trying to outdo each other while some rubbish singer armed only with a sob story does a bit of singing in the background. It’s television of the most predictable variety and a source of much embarrassment for the BBC. I wonder if they felt their twenty two million pounds of License Payers’ money was great value. Somehow I think not. And speaking of embarrassments for the BBC, it seems Bruce Forsyth has finally listened to reason (or the sound of his old bones cracking) for he’s said he’s probably going to take a diminished role in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing. This can only be good news and although many people are playing the ageism card, Political Correctness should only be taken so far and when the guy can’t make the demands of a weekly show, is continually slurring his words and telling the same tired old jokes he was in the seventies, well it’s definitely time to call it a day. And speaking of putting useless things to rest, Brian Dowling has finally been replaced by Emma Willis as the presenter of Big Brother. Hurrah! This sees an end to amateurish fawning in between segments and is a great decision for television anywhere. Now, if producers can only get rid of Vernon Kaye, Eamonn Holmes, Christine Bleakley, Stephen Mulhern, Jeremy Kyle, and Chris Moyles, we’ll consider that a job well done. Oh and Stacey Solomon. Thanks. And that’s it for this week. Next week is the one thousandth issue of the Mercury and to celebrate this lofty achievement I’ll be offering one random reader a Shandy J (it’s like a “Handy J” but I need to drink ten pints of shandy before I’m up to the task) and one lucky winner will get to take home an STD of my choosing (so basically, it’s just another night in Rotherham, really).

angler’s corner by Clint Walker
Still snowing; as I write this, the amount of snow has steadily decreased, but it’s still snowing and it’s affecting everyone’s fishing plans! We’ve all had enough now.....so when you are ready.....make the sun work please? The snow very nearly ruined my plans to visit the very first Northern Angling Show held at Event City, Manchester last weekend. Up here on the Moors, drifts over seven feet could be found in places and the roads were very tricky, but I decided to go for it; with the van loaded with enough shovels, blankets, flasks and other clobber, I set off for the show..... I hope you went too; if you didn’t then you missed out. I arrived in Manchester (no snow!) and parked up before fighting my way through the hordes of camo-clad (and Onesie wearing!) anglers to enter the main hall and was immediately confronted with absolutely hundreds of people wandering purposefully around the myriad of stands, listening to the informative presentations by angling masters such as Julian Cundiff, Matt Hayes and others, or spending money on some fantastic deals. There really was something for the whole family and it was great to see loads of youngsters queuing up to meet their heroes and for those heroes to take the time to meet and greet everyone of them! Brilliant! The show had innovative ideas such as cold and wet rooms to test out angling clothing, interactive stages where ‘Q&A’ sessions were held with a number of instantly recognisable anglers, plenty of new tackle on display and numerous experts to discuss it with in addition to a host of other things. I was pleased to see very few anglers waiting for tickets on the day, indicating that literally thousands of tickets had been bought online prior to the event; they must have done

because it was packed! On a personal note, it was great to see that many of the bigger manufacturers had chosen to attend and they will definitely get a head start on the 2014 show in an event that seems destined to be around for at least five years and probably more. I grabbed a few minutes with Dean Macey on the popular Guru stand, caught up with Harris Sportsmail boss Steve Collett, Angler’s Mail man in the North Ian Chapman, had the swiftest of words with Ali Hamadi, Julian Grattidge on the Northern Monkeys stand (Google them, great website!) and numerous others before treating myself to a hook sharpening system from the boys on the JAG stand. I was also delighted that many anglers who have featured in my Carp-Talk magazine North report took time to say hello and thank me for putting them in the magazine; in reality, it is me who is grateful to each and every one of the anglers who take time to send me reports to share with readers, so it was fantastic to meet everyone of you! Here’s to next year’s show; no doubt bigger and better and here to stay! Well done ot all involved!

It’s time for the annual thud and blunder of the spectacular Grand National from Aintree this Saturday. As usual it’s a very difficult one to call as all 40 runners will have reasonable chances - if they can get round. However, there are some other races at the 3 day meeting that should provide better chances. This meeting is one that can often provide a few surprises as those that ran well at Cheltenham can sometimes underperform at this very different track while those that flopped at the Festival can bounce back on this flat track. Also those that missed going to Cheltenham altogether should not be overlooked as they have often been saved specifically for this meeting where they are expected to perform better than they would have done on the stiff Cheltenham track. The main meeting is obviously at Aintree which dominates the TV coverage on Saturday but there may be a race from Lingfield (the 3.00)slipped in amongst the Aintree ones. With three days to cover there is no analysis this week but a shortlist for each race that is given in order of preference, but do remember how competitive this meeting is! Millers & Rovers News 2012-13
OLD BOY RETURNS TO HAUNT MILLERS Deon Burton came back to haunt his old club once again this season as his 12th goal of the season secured all the three points for table topping Gillingham. His first-half header was all that separated the two sides, despite Rotherham bombarding the Gills penalty area in the final 20 minutes. Both teams tried to force an early opening at a rather chilly Priestfield Stadium but were finding it difficult to break each other down. Daniel Nardiello had the visitors first opportunity in front of goal. After good link up play with strike partner Alex Revell, the Millers top scorer screwed his effort a yard wide of the far post after 11 minutes. The Gills had a great chance to open the scoring soon after on 14 minutes. Joe Martin’s cross wasn’t dealt with and the ball fell to Adam Barrett who swivelled and forced Shearer to tip over the crossbar. Nardiello’s surging forward run forced a rash challenge from the Gillingham defence, but Kari Arnason’s 25-yard free-kick was comfortably collected by Stuart Nelson after taking a deflection. Martin Allen’s team were looking to build their play off the front two of Danny Kedwell and Deon Burton, and it was the pair who combined for the only goal after 22 minutes. A long-throw by Chris Whelpdale from the left was flicked on by Kedwell and converted by Burton who was racing in at the far post. Whelpdale was unfortunate with a dipping drive on 34 minutes as the Gills continue to apply the pressure. The winger was allowed time and space to turn on the edge-of-the-box but his effort struck the crossbar and was cleared away to safety. Anton Robinson and Charlie Allen both had shots comfortably saved by Shearer as the home fans cranked up the noise levels. But it was Rotherham who almost equalised on the stroke of half-time as
Arnason’s deep cross was cleared off the line by Martin. Steve Evans made a double substitution at half-time to try and give his team fresh impetuous in search of an equaliser, bringing on Ben Pringle and Michael O’Connor for Lionel Ainsworth and David Noble. After the break, Whelpdale continued to cause mayhem inside the Rotherham penalty area with his long-throws as Gillingham took the game to the visitors. A fine counter attack from the Gills almost brought about their second goal. After a surging run from Matt Fish, the defender crossed to Deon Burton on the edge of the area but his well struck shot was palmed away by Shearer. Nardiello had a glorious chance to grab the leveller on 57 minutes but after Kearns had played the striker through on goal, he waited too long to take the shot and it allowed Nelson to gather at his feet Evans made his third and final substitution on the hour mark by taking off Nardiello and replacing him with Kayode Odejayi and his first act was to force Rotherham’s first corner of the half as they increased the pressure on the Gills. However, the Millers were fortunate not to concede a second on 70 minutes. The ball was chested into the path of Kedwell who rattled the crossbar with a fierce drive on the corner of the 18 yard box. Odejayi and Revell almost combined to give Rotherham an equaliser soon after, however the latter could only fire his shot into a pack of onrushing defenders. The game was starting to become stretched and Burton had a good chance to get his second of the afternoon after he latched onto the end of Allen’s flick, but he lifted his shot over the bar. Kedwell was next to try his luck when he headed Nelson’s long goal kick towards goal, forcing Shearer into a smart save. Gillingham were grateful to their goalkeeper on 75 minutes as he pulled off a world class save. The ball fell to O’Connor on the edge-of-the- area who struck the ball on the volley, only to see it tipped over by Nelson with it heading for the top corner. The Millers pilled on the pressure in the final few minutes and had appeals for a penalty turned down before Revell headed over in the dying seconds. Attendance: 6796 (360)
ROVERS DOWN ROBINS The Rovers made two changes from the starting line-up against Coventry City, Dean Furman coming in for James Husband and Kyle Bennett replacing Iain Hume. Swindon made three changes from their last game, against Oldham, Nathan Byrne replacing Nathan Thompson, James Collins and Adam Rooney coming in for Gary Roberts and Andy Williams. The Rovers defended the South Stand end in the first half before the Sky Sports cameras, who were showing the match live. The Rovers got off to a bright start on a hard, bumpy pitch that militated against good football. The visitors, however, got the first strike on goal in the 4th minute but Parrett fired over from 25yards. The Rovers had the better of the play over the next ten minutes but only had a 30yard strike from Furman that went wide to show for it. Then Furman had a terrific shot from just inside the visitor’s penalty area that was blocked and cleared. In the 19th minute a good run down the Rovers left by Cotterill but his cross to the near post was pushed out by Foderingham for a corner, which the keeper caught well and cleared. The game evened out a bit but was mainly being played out in midfield. Past the half hour and Swindon won successive corners but they came to nothing. In the 37th minute a loose pass by Griffin was picked up by McCormack, who took it on before firing high over the bar from about 25yards on the left. Griffin then linked with Cotterill on the right and from the byline hit a low cross for Brown at the far post but it was intercepted by Flint, who nearly put it into his own net but Ward cleared off the line, Minutes later and Parrett, for Swindon, fired over the bar from 30 yards. The Rovers attacked to the half whistle but were not troubling the keeper. In fact neither keeper had a real save to make throughout the first half. Swindon got the second half underway but the Rovers were awarded a free kick for a foul on Bennett in the second minute. The ball was cleared out to Furman but he fired wide from the edge of the penalty area. Minutes later and Lundstram was first to a ball out of the Swindon defence. He linked with Furman, who put out to Bennett on the right but his shot from the edge of the area was saved and collected at the second
attempt by the keeper. In the 53rd minute, Brown crossed from the left high to the far post where, under challenge by Bennett he could only punch it out for a corner, which Cotterill placed to the far post where in a bit of a melee it went out and after some indecision the referee gave a goal kick. The Rovers pressed on, with only sporadic attacks from Swindon. Past the hour and Cotterill went down the left before crossing low to the middle for Brown, who was ready to pull the trigger when a defender stuck a foot in front of him. In the 66th minute, a free kick from Cotterill was headed for goal by McCombe at the far post but Foderingham brilliantly tipped it round the post for a corner. This came out of the Swindon defence to Griffin, who fired wide. The pressure was continuous, another corner came to nothing and then a free kick by Cotterill from 35yards was going just inside the near post when the keeper got to it and pushed it out for a corner. Another corner followed, which Brown headed over. The Rovers were playing some good football. Another corner in the 80th minute from Cotterill was placed to the middle where McCOMBE got highest and headed down and into the net. Swindon tried to hit back but the Rovers were not going to be denied. Woods had not been troubled throughout the half and his defence saw to it that he would complete the match with a clean sheet. The Rovers had played well and were back on the winning trail.

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2 12-13 DISAPPOINTING STALEMATE VS CARLISLE SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk The Blades picked up four points over the Easter period but Unitedites left the Lane disappointed after Monday’s goal-less draw. It was United’s third successive scoreless draw at home but the persistent pressure could not breakdown Carlisle’s resilient rearguard. Liam Noble hit a post for Carlisle, who had Sean O’Hanlon sent off in the second half. With Flynn picking up an ankle problem in the last fixture, loanee Poleon was given a start and Murphy returned to the bench. Carlisle’s team included former Blades McGovern and Thirlwell, with Cadamarteri on the bench. Kick-off saw Poleon on the left, a straight swap for Flynn, allowing Robson to stay wide on the right and Forte and Kitson to operate centrally.
Despite the sun shining, a slow start failed to ignite the crowd. For the visitors Miller beat the offside trap but was denied by a combination of Hill and Doyle, whilst Welsh headed wide a deep cross from Simek, United’s offerings were a McDonald shot that was blocked and a Poleon header, although he was called offside. A number of set-pieces, free-kicks in dangerous positions, and corners, failed to get the Blades off the mark, although goalkeeper Gillespie was tested by a near post effort from Robson and Maguire appeared to be hauled away as he attempted to meet another. Long had to be well positioned when Welsh found space for a shot on 22 minutes, whilst United were quickly back on the offensive with Collins heading from close range after another Robson corner. On the half hour, McMahon was the first to be shown a yellow card, following a discussion between the referee and one of his assistants, but the Blades continued to force Carlisle back. McDonald’s firsttime, lashed half-volley was pushed away by Gillespie, whilst Robson was just wide with a shot from the edge of the box. The best chance of the half was the last one and it came from the visitors. The Blades failed to clear a move down Carlisle’s left and Noble’s half-volley from
the edge of the box struck Long’s left post before being hacked away to safety. Kicking towards the Kop in the second half, the home side made a double change with Higginbotham and Murphy replacing Hill and Poleon. Murphy was quickly involved, delivering an inviting cross which Robson almost got on the end of. Doyle fired wide with his unfavoured right foot before the Blades made a final change just after the hour, Ironside taking over from Kitson. Once again the substitute almost made an instant impact, the teenage striker doing exceptionally well to hold up the ball before laying off for Forte to scuff wide. In a rare attack from the visitors, O’Hanlon headed just wide a cross on 71 minutes and it turned out to be his last positive contribution as soon after he was shown a yellow card for his foul on Ironside. It was the Carlisle central defender’s second booking and he disappeared down the Lane tunnel. Murphy’s run down the right caused problems for the ten men and a Robson shot was off target as, predictably, Carlisle slowed down the action in the final ten minutes. Carlisle’s Murphy got back to deny Forte as he looked to get on the end of McMahon’s pass, whilst United’s Murphy could not get enough on a header to trouble Gillespie.
Five added minutes gave the Blades hope but Forte fired over and the late aerial pressure failed to produce the coveted winner, even though Collins won the last header of the game.
WILSON DISAPPOINTED SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Danny Wilson is keeping a positive perspective on United’s promotion prospects, despite admitting his frustration at the goal-less draw with Carlisle United on Easter Monday. It is the third home game in succession that has ended 0-0 and Wilson feels his players are struggling to breakdown teams who come to Bramall Lane to defend. The Gaffer commented: “It is obviously frustrating, but when you get the opportunities we got, especially given the way the opposition setup, then we should have capitalised. “When you face a team who set out to frustrate you, it is crucial to make the most of the half-chances and we didn’t do so again. If you breakdown the opposition the whole complexion of the game changes, but sadly we are finding it difficult to score at home. “We have to do better, if it takes a scrappy 1-0 to win all three points then so be it.” Wilson felt the dismissal of Carlisle defender Sean O’Hanlon galvanised the Cumbrians rearguard and made it even harder for the Blades to find that elusive winner. He continued: “The ten men got even tighter in the last 15 minutes, they didn’t look to play out at all, they just cleared the ball and kept their shape. “We didn’t have that bit of luck in front of goal at times, but when the ball did bounce our way, we didn’t take full advantage and that is the frustration. “We remain in a strong position, though, and we must stay positive, why wouldn’t we with the prize that remains within our sights?” Looking ahead to Saturday’s clash with play-off hopefuls Walsall, the Blades boss concluded: “It will be a tough game at Walsall on Saturday, especially with them having just put four goals past Coventry. “It will be a really difficult match for us, but if we are at our best it is a game we are capable of winning. “As we have been for several weeks now, barring the Stevenage blip, we don’t give much away, but at the other end we must be more clinical.”

Sheffield Wednesday News 2012-13
SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 12-13 CITY SALVAGE LAST GASP POINT SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
A late leveller by Sam Baldock rescued a point for Bristol City at Ashton Gate. The Owls led through a first half Jermaine Johnson strike but in second half stoppage time, Baldock volleyed home to earn his side a point. It was a cruel blow for Wednesday who had held firm up to that point and were seemingly heading towards a vital victory. Manager Dave Jones made five changes from the side that triumphed 2-1 over Barnsley on Saturday. Striker Steve Howard made his debut for the club following his loan move from Hartlepool, while David Prutton and Giles Coke returned in central midfield. Kieran Lee stepped in at right back for
the suspended Lewis Buxton. Wednesday were looking to build on that vital win over the Tykes while three points for City was a must if they were to keep alive any hope of avoiding the drop. The Robins made a bright start and created the first clear opening on six minutes. Baldock centred for Stephen Davies, who looked odds on to bury his header into the net but for a vital interception from Miguel Llera. The early pressure was coming from the hosts and Chris Kirkland was called into action twice within the space of two minutes. The Owls goalkeeper was at full stretch to push the ball to safety following a curled effort from Lewin Nyatanga before denying Davies’ low drive with his feet from close range. Jermaine Johnson did well to fashion a chance on 20 minutes after racing past a cluster of defenders but fired over the bar before City promptly responded at the other end. Midfielder Liam Kelly sent in a powerful cross that needed just a touch from Davies to divert goalwards but there was a fraction too much pace on the ball for the striker to capitalise. The warning signs were there for
Wednesday as Brendon Moloney delivered dangerously into the box but Marvin Elliott could not adjust in time to finish at the back post. But despite the Robins’ pressure, the home side were dealt a huge blow on 35 minutes when Wednesday hit the front through Jermaine Johnson. Debut man Howard won possession and sent the pace ace through one-on-one with Tom Heaton, and the Jamaican kept his composure to apply a neat finish after rounding the keeper. Back came Bristol City, though, who had a golden chance to restore parity moments before the break Baldock slid the ball towards to the unmarked Davies, who was just yards from goal, but the striker couldn’t connect and the chance had gone. City started the second half as they did the first and the Owls were on the back foot – but it was Jones’ men who almost bagged a second on the counter. Jermaine Johnson weaved his way past three challenges and drove hard and low across goal, with the onrushing Howard a whisker away at the far post. That proved the Jamaican’s last involvement as injury dictated his withdrawal and JJ’s replacement, Leroy Lita, smashed into the side netting with his first touch after breaking free down the left of the penalty area. With 15 minutes left on the clock, there was drama as Greg Cunningham went down in the area under a challenge from Kieran Lee – the referee immediately stopped play but cautioned Cunningham for simulation. Nyatanga was thwarted by a superb challenge by Anthony Gardner in stoppage time but City were not to be denied. Deep into added time, Kirkland was challenged in the air by Elliott and the ball dropped down to Baldock who smashed home on the half volley to level late in the contest.

Dave Jones spoke of his disappointment following Bristol City’s last-gasp equaliser to deny the Owls a valuable three points at Ashton Gate on Easter Monday. Jermaine Johnson had earlier given Wednesday the lead before Sam Baldock salvaged a point for the hosts in controversial circumstances at the last. Jones said: “Chris Kirkland has been hit in the face by their lad going up for the cross and if it’s anywhere else on the pitch, it’s a free kick. “You might have been able to get away with that in the old days but not any more. It’s frustrating because we have come away with a point when it should have been all three. “We would have taken four points from the two games we had over Easter but we should be talking about maximum points “But there is nothing we can do about that now – the players have worked their socks off, they will now get a couple of days off and then we get ready for another big game on Saturday.” Jones made five changes from the side that beat Barnsley on Saturday, some enforced and others to shuffle his pack given the close proximity of games. He added: “We’ve had two games in three days and there are a lot of stiff bodies in that dressing room. “We lost Seyi Olifinjana and Stuart Holden before the game, they were very tight after Saturday. “Gary Madine was tight after the game on Saturday so we put Steve Howard in there to give us an hour and then Gary would come on. “Both of them did well today and I thought Gary might have had a penalty at the end but it wasn’t to be.”
