SHEFFIELD CITY TRUST ASSIST SHEFFIELD CITY HOSPITALS DURING COVID-19 OUTBREAK Sheffield City Trust (SCT) has confirmed it is working with the NHS to help Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH) take delivery of around 1,800 new beds. The Trust, which manages 13 sports and leisure venues across the city via its operating company SIV, says the FlyDSA Sheffield Arena is being used to store old beds to allow STH space for their new

consignment. Andrew Snelling, chief executive of SCT, said: “It is important that at this time all city organisations work together across a variety of sectors. We were only too pleased to assist Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in this way and the old beds are now safely stored. “Contrary to reports in some sections of the media there are no plans for the Arena to

be another Nightingale hospital. But we stand ready to work with STH, Sheffield City Council and the NHS during the outbreak of COVID-19. “The health and wellbeing of the people of Sheffield is at the heart of everything we do. We made the decision to close our venues on March 17, ahead of government guidelines which were issued on March 20, and we continue to monitor

advice from the relevant authorities.” Kirsten Major, chief executive at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, posted on Twitter: “We are very grateful to FlyDSA Arena Sheffield who are working with us to provide additional logistics capacity at this time.” “Before COVID-19 started we had ordered circa 1,800 new beds for our hospitals as part of a planned replacement

scheme because our beds are over 10 years old and becoming inefficient to repair. We can no longer dispose of the old beds as we would normally do and need the space in our own stores for other supplies at this time. “The arena team have been amazing in offering to store the old beds until they can be disposed of once the outbreak is over. Thank you FlyDSA Arena Sheffield team for all your incredible support.”

Sarah* started smoking at the age of 23 following nights out with friends who were smokers. On average she was smoking 6-10 per day but decided to stop smoking to follow a more healthy life style. Sarah attended smoking cessation support at her local GP surgery, weekly appointments for 12 weeks meant that she had the professional support she needed, Sarah found this support excellent and very helpful and without it she doubts she would be where she is now, which is smoke free. Apart from using Nicotine Replacement Products Sarah found remaining positive was a major factor for her and helped her on a daily basis. Since stopping smoking Sarah feels far less breathless than she did and has noticed a drastic improvement and feels she now has a far better health, something she didn’t have when she was smoking. Since stopping smoking

I’ve just written a book about falling down a staircase. It’s a step by step guide. People say I’m a plagiarist... Their words, not mine.

I recently switched all the labels on my wife’s spice rack.... She hasn’t realised yet, but the thyme is cumin. When my wife caught me standing on the bathroom scales, sucking in my stomach, she laughed, “Ha! That’s not going to help!” “Sure it does,” I said. “It’s the only way I can see the numbers.” Instead of a swear jar, I have a negativity jar. Every time I have pessimistic thoughts, I put a penny in... It’s currently half empty. What did the cannibal’s wife say when he came home late for dinner? I’m giving you the cold shoulder. Did you hear about the guy who’s left side was cut off? He’s all right now. What do you call a magician who has lost their magic? Ian. I bought a knife that can cut through four packets of bread at once. It’s a four loaf cleaver. For the past few days, I wake up to see someone has dumped a bunch of LEGO blocks on my front porch. I don’t know what to make of it.

Tips on how to look after your vehicle while staying at home With the over 70’s and those with underlying health conditions self-isolating and the rest of the country following the government advice to stay at home, many of us will be wondering how best to look after our cars. Vehicles are not made for standing around for a long period of time unused, so here are a few things to check and do to keep your car roadworthy:

your house garage as the exhaust fumes can be toxic. Electric vehicles and hybrids have 12-volt batteries, the same as conventional cars. However, they charge differently. Pressing the start button, so the ready light comes on, will operate the charging system. Doing this for 10 minutes once a week should keep the 12-volt battery topped up. Some electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles can maintain their 12-volt batteries if they’re plugged in to the mains charger. Check your vehicle handbook for details on this.

What if my car needs an MOT? The government have granted vehicle owners a 6-month exemption from MOT testing from 30th March 2020. Vehicles must be kept in a roadworthy condition, and garages will remain open for essential repair work. Be aware that drivers can still be prosecuted if driving unsafe vehicles.

Life on the inside: things pet owners need to know about lockdown Since social distancing rules came in, it’s been tricky for some dog owners to make sure their pooches get enough exercise. Thankfully for our animal companions, there are some great ways to keep them in tip top shape. – My dog is used to two walks a day. What do I do? For people who for any reason can’t exercise their dog, or whose dog is used to being walked two or more times a day, there are a number of ways dogs can be stimulated inside the home or garden. These could include dividing meals so that your dog is fed smaller, but more frequent, portions. Another tip is to scatter their food so that they have to use their brain to find the food and, of course, it takes them longer. – I have two (or more) dogs, can I take each of them for a separate walk? Sadly not. The Government guidance is you can leave your house to exercise once a day and you should combine this with dog walking.

– I am self-isolating, how can I make sure my dog gets walked? If your dog cannot exercise at home, you should ask someone outside of your household to walk your dog for you. Members of the public may leave the house to provide care or help a vulnerable person. This includes walking a dog for someone who is unable to leave their house because they are self isolating or being shielded. They should remember to wash their hands before and after handling the dog and keep two metres away from other people and animals, including when handing over the dog to the owner.

training with your dog, but owners should remember to be patient. You know what you want them to do, but they will take time to understand it. Also, use only positive reward-based methods, i.e. lots of praise when they get it right and a treat or their favourite toy. – I am a cat owner, is there any specific advice for me? The Government says you should wash your hands before and after any contact with your cat.

Frampton Lane, Hubberts Bridge, Boston, Lincs PE20 3QU

The Environment Agency have confirmed that they are not currently offering out refunds for fishing licences as a result of the current COVID-19 lockdown. There have been growing calls on social media for the Agency to provide some compensation to anglers, who have not been able to get out on the bank due to social distancing laws. A spokesperson from the EA said: “We do not know how long the restrictions on movement will apply and so do not know what impact Coronavirus will have on people’s opportunities to go fishing over the rest of the year. “We are not currently offering a refund on licences or other options such as extending the period of time a licence is valid. We are, however, continuing to review the situation and will take any action at the appropriate time. “In the mean time we urge anglers to follow government guidelines on leaving the house only when necessary.”

GET THE BIVVY UP TO SUPPORT OUR NHS A keen catfish angler is calling on other anglers to throw up the bivvy and spend a night in the garden this Friday, to show support for the NHS. Fifty-five-year-old Steve Stewart, who is a member of the Catfish Conservation Group, came up with the idea after seeing a post from a friend on Facebook, who had set their bivvy up out the back of the house to get their fishing fix. Dorking based Steve told Angling Times: “A light bulb went off for me this morning, when I noticed my friend’s Facebook post. “I thought how cool would it be if the fishing community could come together as a group to support our NHS staff.” Steve also revealed that like so many others the NHS is very close to his heart… “It’s a personal one for me as my daughter is a front line worker.

“A great deal of us are sat at home, some with children that need amusing. So as anglers lets show our support this Friday in a way we know how. “If anyone can make a small donation, I’m sure it will be greatly appreciated.” Steve has set up a JustGiving page and aims to raise £500 for NHS staff which is available at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ steve-stewart-2

Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury PLAYERS SEND MESSAGES BRIAN STOCK INDUCTED TO NOMINATED CHARITIES INTO THE HALL OF FAME Despite the current Covid-19 pandemic that currently sees the UK on lockdown for an indefinite period of time, United’s players have sent their best wishes to the Club’s nominated charities via a video message. The Blades have seven nominated charity partners with Cavendish Cancer Care, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Hallam FM Cash for Kids, St. Luke’s Hospice, the Children’s Hospital, Weston Park Cancer Charity and Paces benefiting from their ties with the Club

duration of the current campaign. The players involved in recording the videos were Ben Osborn, Luke Freeman, Panos Retsos, Jake Eastwood and Enda Stevens, as well as Women’s manager Carla Ward and player Sam Tierney. Operations Director Dave McCarthy commented: “Everyone at the club is thinking about those who are working for, or who are receiving treatment or services at organisations that form our nominated charities this year. “We know how hard all

the staff are working at what is such a testing time and there’s no doubt that all the efforts will be appreciated by those who benefit from the excellent services that are provided across the local community and region. “We at United send our best wishes to the patients and their families at the hospitals, hospices and those at the centres and hope you all remain safe and well.” This is latest commitment of United assisting the community in addition to the NHS and Government in the

current pandemic, with the Bramall Lane car park being used free of charge for NHS staff, whilst members of United staff have also been given the green light to sign up for the NHS volunteering scheme in lieu of regular day-to-day duties at the club. The club has also donated a substantial amount of sanitiser and wall units to Sheffield City Council for use in sheltered housing and independent living schemes for the elderly.

Brian Stock has become the next Rovers legend to be inducted into the Hall of Fame by supporters after being voted as the standout player of the 2000s. Stock began his career at AFC Bournemouth under manager Sean O’Driscoll. When O’Driscoll was appointed Rovers manager in 2006, Stock was his first signing. A gifted midfielder with impeccable vision and passing, Stock soon established himself as a key member of a Rovers

sums up how we are all feeling. With the pandemic taking hold around the world, my overriding thought is that the biggest priority by far at the moment is the health and well-being of our families and friends and the wider communities - people who you don’t even know but who perhaps we can help in any small way. We are all living within the guidelines of the lockdown and I can only echo the key messages that we are all familiar with because it’s only by following these measures that we can ultimately

help save lives, which is everything. Like you, all of us at the club are coming to terms with this unique situation the best we can. We finished normal training just under two weeks ago and immediately formulated a plan setting out the home fitness programmes for the players and the importance of following them on a daily basis. They have all been given individual schedules which are monitored daily through the technologies at our disposal, so we have a very accurate idea of their fitness levels. We

were very well prepared with the input of Tony Strudwick and the club doctor, Richard Higgins. We are continuing the analysis side of things in preparation for the return to normal. We are in constant touch with the players by telephone and conference calls as it’s equally important to talk. Obviously it is impossible for us to train as we normally do and the physical conditioning that brings. But we are covering every possible angle we can to make sure the foundations for the players are as strong as possible for when we can return.

I think we are all in agreement that we would like to finish this season properly but as with a lot of things right now it is still unclear how and when that will be possible. So we will have to wait until the governing authorities give us all the clarity. I am in touch every day with officials from the club on various matters but as I write, there is no likelihood of coming back on the near horizon. As much as we all miss it, it is absolutely right that we cannot even begin to think about resuming normal training and playing again until the threat to health has gone. It has to be a completely safe environment for everyone and these decisions will be left to those who are qualified to make the calls. I’m hungry to get back, the players are hungry and I’m sure you are too but we have to be guided by those who know best. My hope is if we are to take any positives from this situation it’s that we will appreciate the little things we all take for granted in our lives and take that forward when we return to normality. So in the meantime please take good care of yourselves and everyone around you.

Good morning and I hope you are all keeping as well as you can in these most testing of times. This whole situation feels strange and unique to anything we have all experienced before. Something that none of us really thought could or would happen in modern society. Someone said to me it’s like a war but we’re facing an invisible enemy which kind of
