New Dates For World Snooker Championship at the Crucible The Betfred World Snooker Championship has been rescheduled, subject to government policy, to run from 31 July to 16 August at the Crucible Theatre. Snooker’s biggest tournament was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic but following discussions with key stakeholders including Sheffield City Council, the BBC, Eurosport and Sheffield Theatres, new dates for the World Snooker Championship have been agreed. The dates for the
qualifying rounds have yet to be confirmed. WST’s preference is to stage the event with a full crowd inside the iconic Crucible Theatre, which seats an audience of just under 1,000 spectators. If that is not possible, based on government advice at the time, WST will consider the following options: • Playing the event with a reduced crowd • Playing the event behind closed doors • Postponing the event to a later date again WST Chairman Barry
• WE ALSO DO • PUBS • CLUBS • BAR SEATING •
Hearn said: “We are delighted to confirm new dates for this huge global sporting event which has an international television audience of 500 million people. The world is going through a very challenging period but live sport can be a massive inspiration for the public and can boost morale. This gives fans of top class sport something on their calendar to look ahead to and enjoy for 17 days. “It is crucial for our 128 tour players to know that we are doing everything we can to get our circuit
going again as soon as it is considered safe to do so by the government. The players are selfemployed and they need opportunities to earn, while we keep the health and safety of everyone involved in an event of this scale as a priority. “In recent weeks we have had intricate negotiations with our key broadcasters including the BBC and Eurosport as well as the Crucible itself and Sheffield City Council. I would like to express my gratitude to all of them as we have progressed to
a solution. “Our sincere hope is that we are able to play the tournament with a full crowd as usual. This event means so much to the fans who have a golden ticket for the Crucible experience, and to the people of Sheffield. The players will desperately want to compete in the atmosphere that only a packed Crucible can generate. “However if that is not possible then we will give careful consideration to each scenario.” Tickets for the final stages will be automatically transferred to the new dates. The policy for refunds will be announced separately and all ticket holders will be contacted.

Sarah* started smoking at the age of 23 following nights out with friends who were smokers. On average she was smoking 6-10 per day but decided to stop smoking to follow a more healthy life style. Sarah attended smoking cessation support at her local GP surgery, weekly appointments for 12 weeks meant that she had the professional support she needed, Sarah found this support excellent and very helpful and without it she doubts she would be where she is now, which is smoke free. Apart from using Nicotine Replacement Products Sarah found remaining positive was a major factor for her and helped her on a daily basis. Since stopping smoking Sarah feels far less breathless than she did and has noticed a drastic improvement and feels she now has a far better health, something she didn’t have when she was smoking. Since stopping smoking
Sarah has saved over £180 in a very short space of time and plans to treat herself with a new wardrobe full of clothes. Sarah would tell anyone thinking about stopping smoking to never touch them as they control you, you don’t control them. Yorkshire Smoke Free would like to advise that during this current time of uncertainty due to the Covid 19 virus, we are still offering smoking cessation support. Appointments continue to take place by way of telephone support. Please do not hesitate to contact the service on 0114 321649.

Yorkshire Folk Favourtie Kate Rusby to perform Christmas show at Sheffield City Hall Forever proud to call herself folk singer, Kate Rusby’s beautiful, expressive vocals never fail to connect the emotional heart of a song to that of her audience. Famously down to earth, Kate’s engaging personality and sharp, Yorkshire wit have further endeared her to concert goers everywhere for over a quarter of a century. Kate’s Christmas Tour, so wondrously captured on her Live at Christmas DVD, has, for many, become as much a part of the festivities as Christmas pudding itself! Warm and inviting, spicy and sparkly she and her marvellous band, joined
as ever by a sublime brass quintet, embody the sounds and joyous spirit of the best Christmases ever! She will be performing at Sheffield City Hall on Friday 11th December. A Kate Rusby Christmas Concert perpetuates the tradition of Yorkshire carols, Specific carols sung in the crowded pubs of South Yorkshire. Kate sat in the corner of those crowded pubs as a child, so the songs she brings to these shows are in her bones. For over two hundred years, from late-November to New Year’s Day, North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire communities would congregate on Sunday lunchtimes, in their local public house, to belt out their own versions of familiar carols, carols that were often frowned upon by the church in Victorian times as ‘too happy’. Kate’s happiness, her humour and her storytelling are a feature of her live shows. Each auditorium becomes her front room and we are her welcomed and well-cared-for guests. To date, Kate has released five albums of songs and carols from this marvellous Yorkshireinspired tradition and beyond
including Holly Head, the current Christmas Album. Kate would describe herself as a ‘Holly Head’ – someone who loves Christmas. Hugely spirited but undoubtedly family affairs, Kate’s concerts celebrate what makes Christmas so special and so much fun as she and her fellow musicians perform fabulous songs brimful of the goodwill and spirituality of the season and in doing so put smiles on faces and joy in our hearts. Kate Rusby: The Christmas Tour Sheffield City Hall Friday 11th December Tickets Available from sheffieldcityhall.co.uk

Support to bereaved families in Sheffield losing loved ones during COVID-19 Losing a loved one is always difficult, but the social distancing measures currently in place can make it especially hard.
The measures, which place restrictions on gatherings including visiting hospitals and attending funerals, means it is not possible to be there in person for family and friends during the pandemic. Sheffield City Council has launched a new service to help people bereaved during Covid19. The aim of the service is to provide practical, emotional health and wellbeing support to residents of South Yorkshire bereaved during this time, and to signpost residents to other support available as required. By providing this service to the public, it will help reduce the risk to those affected by offering timely and practical information and guidance following a sudden bereavement. The service provides: • One to one telephone support by a qualified worker • Emotional and practical information, guidance and support • Practical help in dealing with healthcare agencies • Local information with regards to the current funeral process • Help to overcome any feelings of isolation or anxiety • Referrals and signposting to other services as required The accredited service, an adult counselling helpline delivered in the city by Listening Ear, is available through a free phone number 0800 048 5224. More information on the support available can be obtained from the
Food Parcel Delivery Service is a "Godsend" A Sheffield charity has been hailed as a “godsend” by a 75-year-old woman who is shielding at home from the coronavirus, thanks to food parcels that are being delivered directly to her door. Violet’s son and daughter in law are nurses who are part of the NHS front line fighting the corona virus, which has made it difficult for them to support Violet with food supplies. Due to self-isolating and living alone, Violet had been having to rely on paying her neighbours to carry out shopping, and so Age UK Sheffield arranged for her to receive one of their weekly food parcels, delivered safely, straight to her door. Violet explained “My son and his wife are nurses working 12 hour shifts at the hospital fighting the corona virus and they have their own family so they can only help so much. Before I received these parcels, I was paying neighbours to fetch me my food, who are older themselves and it wasn’t always possible for them to do, so it wasn’t a great situation. The food parcels have been a godsend. They’ve got
website www.listening-ear.co.uk/refer which is available for anyone registered with a GP in Sheffield. Richard Brown from Listening Ear said: “We have been providing the Amparo service, for people bereaved by a probable suicide local for approximately 18 months and we understand the mixture of trauma and bereavement. “Listening Ear will work with people that have been bereaved during the coronavirus pandemic and we recognise that there will potentially be similar presenting issues. “The practical support at this time will also help to reduce feelings of anxiousness and stress.” Calls are welcome from anyone who has lost a friend, relative or loved one, from any cause – not just from Covid19. As well as being promoted by the Council, the number is also being shared by hospitals, funeral homes and faith groups.
Cabinet member for Health and Social Care at Sheffield City Council George LindarsHammond, said: “Losing a loved one is never easy and it is especially difficult when we are not able to go through the usual grieving process such as saying goodbye or attending a funeral. “It’s important not to shoulder the burden of loss on your own. This is why this service is so important. By talking to someone at Listening Ear, the team will help you with the practical help available and to listen to you to support you at this sad time. It’s especially hard when we are social distancing as the first thing people will want to do is to visit friends or family. “By calling the service we hope having someone to talk to will make things a little easier.” everything in, there’s bread and milk, everything! They’re really thinking when they’re making these parcels up! They even put you jam in and butter in.” “Without this help I would have had to get a taxi, and because I’m bad on my legs, I can’t walk around the shops, so I’d have gone into the supermarket and have to ask them to help to get me things.” “The contents have been great and the one that came last week even had a home made style beef stew, with heating instructions, ready to go in the microwave, I really enjoyed that! It’s made life a lot easier, nobody really understands what it’s like if you can’t get out and you haven’t even got any milk for a comforting cup of tea. Honestly, I really do appreciate it and it’s made such a difference for me. I’d be lost without them” Age UK Sheffield are so grateful to be able to provide this much needed service for so many people who, like Violet, had no other guaranteed safe options to access food. This is all thanks to the generous donations to our fundraising appeal from individuals and businesses across Sheffield. To donate and help others , please visit the donation page at www.ageuk.org.uk/sheffield

New website & app for children’s activities in lockdown
First Mainline ....................................01709 566000
Last week Sheffield Council launched two new brilliant resources to support Sheffield children and young people (aged 0-24) and their families in lockdown.
Mercury . ............................................0114 276 3701
Create Sheffield and 50 things to do before you’re 5 are availablenow and completely free to use. Create Sheffield’s new website hosts a series of fun, creative adventures for young people, children and their families, brought together by Create Sheffield and their partner arts and cultural organisations from across Sheffield. The launch comes at the end of the week which should have seen the start of the summer school term. The website’s activities have been transformed into #homeadventures to try in lockdown. Participants are encouraged to share what they get up to on each home adventure on social media, and to invent their own #homeadventures to share with others across in the city. Ian Naylor, Chair of Create Sheffield, said: “The cultural education partnership is here to foster a movement, where every child in the city, no matter what community they live in, can explore, share and revel in the creativity that both defines them, and defines our amazing city. “Creativity is the best friend that every child is born with, it lies at the heart of what makes us human. Creative thinking is at the core of the deepest learning and we know that the structure of our education system can at times feel like this innate creativity is under pressure. The best scientific discoveries, every story ever written, the solution to a mathematical formula were all borne from creative thinking. Without care this very basic human need can be taught out of our children and young people. “At a time when we are turning to creativity and play like no other, there seems no better time to try and draw our city and its young people together through this creativity. It also highlights that there are so many children and young people who face barriers to exploring and sharing creativity for themselves. Together, the partners of Create Sheffield, will work tirelessly to ensure that every child in our great city can grow, develop and shine. “I am delighted to share the start of this journey with our city through the launch of our website. And because this movement has creativity and collaboration at its heart, it will really come alive when our city, our home, our place and the children and young people who bring it such vibrancy can contribute to its development. “Start by sharing your #homeadventures via social media – if you’re a musician you can do this through your #gardengig making music on your doorstep, in your garden or with your window open every day at 4pm.” ‘50 Things to Do before you’re 5’, one of Create Sheffield’s partners, is also launching a Sheffieldfocused version of their website and app. This fantastic resource particularly aimed at the under 5s has been funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and special additional material has been put onto the website to help with its use for families in lockdown.

Wilder thanks the real heroes Harris: ‘I will Chris Wilder has described NHS staff and key workers in a number of sectors as the ‘real heroes’. Chris Wilder has described NHS staff and key workers in a number of sectors as the ‘real heroes’. Speaking recently about the current Covid-19 pandemic that is affecting everyone across the region, UK and many countries across the world, the Blades boss has also praised those who have adhered to strict social distancing guidelines set out by the Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as the country tries to halt the spread if the deadly virus. Wilder remarked: “We’re
Thank you Sheffield Wednesday from Age UK Sheffield Local charity Age UK Sheffield have shared their thanks with Wednesday following the club’s donation of £5,000 from our COVID-19 charity campaign. The donation has boosted Age UK’s own
all frustrated that our normal lives have been interrupted, but looking a bigger picture and the enormous work that has been going on, the brilliant work by the frontline workers, the people in the NHS and the other people keeping the country going. “It just shows what this country is all about when asked the question, when the finger is pointed at us we come up with goods, everybody is working away and adhering to the lockdown better than what anyone in the government would have ever thought. “I think there will be a lot of reflection from a political and social point of view about what’s gone off over this period, we have to make sure that we
get it right because a lot of other people are getting it right and doing as their told in their walk of life and an enormous amount of people can be proud of what they’ve done. “I’ve worked from 16 to 52, I’ve been out the game for three months and it’s completely different situation for me, but one we can’t feel down about and hopefully there’s light at the end of the tunnel
and we can all come out of this as better people. “There’s going be an awful lot of work done, not just from a health perspective but from an economic perspective, it’s been a big hit to us all.” The Gaffer added: “We have heroes on a Saturday and a Tuesday night, and I think it puts it into perspective, in the situation that we’re going through, who the real heroes are!”
fundraising campaign, aiming to raise £50,000 to for the urgent food and medication delivery service created to support some of the most vulnerable older people self-isolating across Sheffield during the Coronavirus crisis. Cally Bowman of Age UK said: “Every penny really does count, because this service has become vital to so many people who simply couldn’t do without it. “The sum of £5,000 is an incredible help towards funding this vital service for Sheffield and we are so grateful for the
support from Sheffield Wednesday.” Local resident Violet has benefited greatly from the vital service Age UK provide and added: “My son and his wife are nurses working 12-hour shifts at the hospital fighting the Coronavirus and they have their own family so they can only help so much. “Before I received these food parcels, I was paying neighbours to fetch me my food, who are older themselves and it wasn’t always possible for them to do, so it wasn’t a great situation. “The food parcels have
been a godsend. Without this help I would have had to get a taxi, and because I’m bad on my legs, I can’t walk around the shops, so I’d have gone into the supermarket and have to ask them to help to get me things. “It’s made life a lot easier, nobody really understands what it’s like if you can’t get out and you haven’t even got any milk for a comforting cup of tea. Honestly, I really do appreciate it and it’s made such a difference for me. I’d be lost without them.”
never be more ready’
Kadeem Harris has pledged to come back better and stronger once the players receive the green light to resume training. Whilst completely conversant with the bigger picture, Harris is focused on returning to duty when the nation reverts to some kind of normality. The Wednesday wideman enjoyed a promising start to his S6 career but agrees his form slipped in tandem with that of the team before the COVID-19 pandemic brought the country to a halt: He said: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with Sheffield Wednesday. There have been ups and downs but I was playing week in and week out and that’s one of the reasons I signed for this club. “I was really happy with the way I started but I think all our standards dropped since that Christmas period really. “There’s not one thing you can really put your finger on but what this time away has done is given all of us time to reflect on how we can improve when we get back to training and hopefully playing. “First and foremost, it’s essential we only come back when it’s safe to do so and that goes for the whole country in every walk of life. We will be guided by the authorities. He added: “When we do come back, I want to get back to the kind of form I had at the beginning. “Looking back, I think I was maybe playing with more confidence, I really wanted to hurt my full back. “I don’t know if I wasn’t seeing the ball as much or just generally we didn’t play as well as a team. But this is a talented squad, the boys are all together and we know we are capable of much more. “Personally right now I am feeling fit, strong and positive and when we do get back, I will never be more ready.”
