Prohibition notice served to Sheffield pub flouting restrictions A Sheffield pub, which was found to still be opening despite current coronavirus restrictions, has been served a prohibition notice by South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield City Council. The Pitsmoor Hotel on Pitsmoor Road was brought to the attention of licensing teams by members of the public who had reported it was still serving customers. The new Health Protection (Coronavirus Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020 were announced by the Government earlier

this month. Under this new legislation local authorities and the police can close premises that are flouting the closure ban. John O’Malley, Liquor Licensing Manager at South Yorkshire Police, said: “On Friday night, officers attended the premises and found a number of people hiding in cupboards, the pub was clearly still open for business. “What makes this more significant, is that the license holder has already been served a prohibition notice under the legislation for another premise, The Staffordshire

Arms on Sorby Street. “Licenses for both venues are now under review by ourselves and Sheffield City Council, so there could be long-term implications for these businesses. “Right across South Yorkshire we have seen fantastic support, compliance and respect for the restrictions from our licensed premises. “I want responsible businesses to see that we are taking enforcement action when it comes to venues who are flouting the rules and ultimately putting lives at risk. “I’d also like to thank the public for being vigilant

and reporting their concerns.” Reports continue to be made these are being investigated. Anyone found to be operating in contravention of the new rules will face enforcement action. Cllr Bob Johnson, Cabinet Member for Transport and Development at Sheffield City Council, said: “These restrictions are in place to protect everyone from the spread of coronavirus. “Hundreds of people are still dying in the UK amidst this pandemic and whilst I am heartened by the sacrifices the vast

majority of individuals and responsible businesses are making during this lockdown period, it seems some appear to believe they can ignore the regulations and in doing so risk spreading the virus. “In these cases, as we have shown here, we will follow up on complaints and take firm action. “This license holder has ignored the restrictions, despite having another premises shut down, and may now face additional consequences around the future of these licenses. “We ask members of the public to continue reporting their concerns so that we can protect our NHS and protect lives.” People can report these issues seven days a week by mailing healthprotection@ sheffield.gov.uk.

Sarah* started smoking at the age of 23 following nights out with friends who were smokers. On average she was smoking 6-10 per day but decided to stop smoking to follow a more healthy life style. Sarah attended smoking cessation support at her local GP surgery, weekly appointments for 12 weeks meant that she had the professional support she needed, Sarah found this support excellent and very helpful and without it she doubts she would be where she is now, which is smoke free. Apart from using Nicotine Replacement Products Sarah found remaining positive was a major factor for her and helped her on a daily basis. Since stopping smoking Sarah feels far less breathless than she did and has noticed a drastic improvement and feels she now has a far better health, something she didn’t have when she was smoking. Since stopping smoking

Sarah has saved over £180 in a very short space of time and plans to treat herself with a new wardrobe full of clothes. Sarah would tell anyone thinking about stopping smoking to never touch them as they control you, you don’t control them. Yorkshire Smoke Free would like to advise that during this current time of uncertainty due to the Covid 19 virus, we are still offering smoking cessation support. Appointments continue to take place by way of telephone support. Please do not hesitate to contact the service on 0114 321649.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes latest adventure brings him to the Sheffield City Hall Named by the Guinness Book of Records as ‘the world’s greatest living explorer’, Sir Ranulph Fiennes has spent his life in pursuit of extreme adventure, risking life and limb in some of the most ambitious private expeditions ever undertaken. He brings his adventures to Sheffield City Hall on Thursday 21st April 2021 Amongst his many record-breaking achievements, he was the first to reach both Poles, the first to cross the Antarctic and Arctic Ocean, and the first to circumnavigate the world along its polar axis. In Living Dangerously, Sir Ranulph offers a personal journey through his life, from his

early years to the present day. Both lighthearted and strikingly poignant, Living Dangerously spans Sir Ranulph’s childhood and school misdemeanours, his army life and early expeditions, right through the Transglobe Expedition to his current Global Reach Challenge - his goal to become the first person in the world to cross both polar ice caps and climb the highest mountain on each of the seven continents.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes’ many endeavours have pushed his endurance levels to the very limits, inspiring generations and making him a pioneer of exploration with an unparalleled story to tell. ALBERT SNODGRASS Why do North Koreans draw the straightest lines? Because they have a supreme ruler. Breaking wind in a packed elevator... Is wrong on so many levels. I broke my finger last week... On the other hand I’m OK. I went into a pet shop and asked for twelve bees. The shopkeeper counted out thirteen and handed them over. “You’ve given me one too many.” “That one is a freebie.” To ride a horse or not to ride a horse. That is equestrian. I just got hired at a company that makes bicycle wheels! I’m the spokesperson. Yesterday one of my good friends told me I often make people uncomfortable by violating their personal space. It was a really hurtful thing to say and completely ruined our bath. The only thing I have planned for today is to get my new glasses Then I’ll see what happens.

Businesses asked to share experiences of Covid-19 Sheffield Covid-19 Business Response Group is calling for businesses in the city to share how they have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Response Group is made up of Sheffield’s leading business networks and support organisations, who are working together to help address the issues local businesses are facing now and into the future. The group are encouraging all Sheffield-based businesses who have been impacted by the pandemic to complete an online survey (which can be found at sheffield.citizenspace.com), which will shape the support provided to businesses in the region. The responses will also inform discussions with Central Government on the funding and support needed to help local organisations recover. The survey aims to identify how different sectors in Sheffield have been affected and to what extent, to help ensure that more targeted and specific support is provided wherever possible. It is also hoped that it will provide an overview of the issues that are of most concern to business owners both currently and looking to the future, from impact on cash flow to social distancing. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “We know that Coronavirus has had a massive impact on businesses in Sheffield and has presented many challenges and uncertainty that

Sheffield locals can now donate to those in need with ease thanks to Jack’s Supermarket Jack’s Supermarket, on Kilner Way, will now feature a collection point at the front of the store for customers to donate items which will directly help those in need in the local community. Shoppers will have the opportunity to support their local food bank by leaving supplies at the new in-store collection point, which will be donated to Trussell Trust at the end of each month. To avoid unnecessary waste, any donations made must be non-perishable or long-life goods, such as; UHT milk, tinned goods, breakfast cereals, pasta, rice, biscuits, jams, and tea and coffee, as well as toiletries and hygiene products. Sheffield Foodbank on Mains Gate, is part of the Trussell Trust food bank network, and was founded by local churches and community groups, working together towards stopping hunger in Sheffield. The Trussell Trust supports around two thirds of the nation’s food banks by providing emergency, nutritionally balanced food directly to individuals. Staff work with frontline professionals who identify people in need and issue them with a voucher entitling them to support.

people haven’t experienced before. “Sheffield Business Response Group, which includes the Council, has launched this survey to help us better understand exactly how businesses have been affected, so that we can make sure we’re providing the support that people need the most. “We can’t do this without your help, so I’d like to ask all business owners in Sheffield, whatever your experiences of Covid-19, to please take the time to fill out the survey. “It’s also important to reiterate that there is a lot of support available to businesses right now to help with things like your short-term cash flow. We know there are a number of eligible businesses that haven’t applied for a grant, so if you think you could qualify please contact us to find out more.” Alexis Krachai, Co-Chair of the Sheffield Covid-19 Business Response Group, said: “Covid-19 has impacted on us all, and we know that businesses in particular need a lot support to recover from this pandemic and thrive again. “Nobody is better placed to explain what they need than businesses themselves, so that’s why we’re asking as many business owners as possible to share their insight with us. “Filling out this survey will give us valuable data that will be extremely important in helping us to shape a stronger and more inclusive economy moving forward.” Support for businesses and information on business grants is available at sheffield.gov.uk/ coronavirus-business. Alternatively, you can contact Business Sheffield at businesssheffield@ sheffield.gov.uk or call 0114 224 500.

To find your nearest food bank and apply for a voucher visit: https://www.trusselltrust.org/gethelp/find-a-foodbank/ Samantha Stapley, Chief Operating Officer at the Trussell Trust, said: “As the coronavirus outbreak develops, more people are likely to need a food bank’s help. Our teams are working tirelessly to ensure that food banks are able to remain open and have the necessary stocks to respond to this crisis. “The support of Jack’s supermarket means we can remain agile to respond to the fast-changing situation and ensure food banks continue to provide the lifeline of emergency food and additional support for people in crisis.” Michael Bradley, Store Manager at Jack’s Sheffield, said: “At Jack’s we’re passionate about helping people in our local community in any way we can. We regularly make food and product donations to some very worthy causes, but now customers can help too and it’s really simple to do. I’m proud of Jack’s and all of our colleagues for their efforts, especially over the last few weeks; it’s been challenging but really rewarding to know you’re making a difference.” Jack’s also has a Community Food Connections service which alerts local food banks in the area when a store has surplus food that would otherwise go to waste which is collected several times a week.

Bears of Sheffield sculpture trail postponed until Next Year It is with a heavy heart that The Children’s Hospital Charity announce that the Bears of Sheffield sculpture trail has been postponed until the summer of 2021 due the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The event, which was due to start in July, would have seen both big and little bear sculptures on display in both indoor and outdoor locations around Sheffield. It has been supported by 100 schools, more than 60 businesses and 60 artists from throughout the region. Charity Director David-Vernon Edwards explained: “The Bears of Sheffield trail was designed to be open to all and unite businesses, communities, artists and schools from throughout the city and across the country in support of Sheffield Children’s. “The enjoyment, health and safety of everyone taking part has always been our top priority. We are determined to continue to support the national effort to protect the NHS, save lives and slow the spread of coronavirus in line with the latest UK government guidance. “We owe it to everyone who has backed this project with such enthusiasm to make it the best it can possibly be and that can only happen when everyone can enjoy the trail safely. With social distancing likely to continue as an essential requirement in the fight against Covid-19, we have taken the difficult decision to postpone the Bears of Sheffield until 2021.” The Children’s Hospital Charity looks forward to bringing the Bears of Sheffield to the city next summer and will share the new trail dates at the earliest possible opportunity. The project would have supported the appeal to transform the Cancer and Leukaemia ward at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and aimed to surpass the £600,000 raised during The Children’s Hospital Charity’s previous sculpture trail, the Herd of Sheffield. The vital funds it was due to raise have never been more needed, as every day during the coronavirus pandemic brings new challenges and pressure on the hospital’s services. David Vernon-Edwards continued: “Staff at Sheffield Children’s continue to work day and night to support the public, helping to care for some of those most at risk during the crisis, including children and young patients with underlying health conditions. “We need your support to help the hospital continue its vital work in paediatric care, giving children the best chance to fulfil their potential and ensuring there is no long-term impact once this crisis is over. If you can help, then please make a donation. Whatever you can give will make a huge difference to our patients now and in the future.” Donations at this time can help fund additional resources to support staff wellbeing as well as craft activities, toys and games for young patients at this difficult time, with reduced contact measures now in place for their own protection. If you would like to make a donation to support the patients and staff at Sheffield Children’s Hospital at this unprecedented time, you can donate online at www.tchc.org.uk, call 0114 321 2470 or text SHEFFCHILDRENS to 70085 to donate £5. This costs £5 plus your standard message rate.

FISHING AND GOLF GOVERNING BODIES LEAD THE WAY IN HELPING SPORT COME OUT OF LOCKDOWN Anglers and golfers have launched a bid to persuade the Government their hobbies can be safely restarted with strict social distancing. They are leading the charge of sports governing bodies, most of which are in talks with the Government about how they might be phased back in.

The Angling Trust submitted a 15-page report to ministers yesterday in which it describes angling as a ‘social distancing sport’ and suggests safety measures that could be implemented. These measures would include local fishing only, no sharing of tackle and a 15-metre riverbank gap between anglers. Jamie Cook, the chief executive of the Angling Trust, told The Daily Telegraph that the sport was suited to current social distancing advice. ‘The majority of anglers practise self-isolation and social distancing as a matter of course anglers tend to seek solitude even in normal circumstances,’ he said. Golfing authorities have drawn up similar proposals for courses to reopen with safeguards such as the removal of bunker rates and no touching of flagsticks. Both sports’ governing bodies hope their proposals could

mean a return to activities later this week when the Government reviews the lockdown. Sir Charles Walker, chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Angling, said: ‘The focus has been on professional sport which covers a fraction of the population. ‘All of us weekend warriors, putting on our football boots or grabbing our fishing rods, covers millions and millions of people. ‘Hopefully, what we and golf have done will be held up as best practice.’ Tim Hollingsworth, Sport England’s chief executive, said: ‘What we are anxious to make sure is that, when there is clarity about what the circumstances under lockdown are, and if there is some gradual easing of that, then what does that mean in terms of what is possible.’

To sponsor your team’s weekly football news call our Sales Team on 0114 276 3633 Warne’s lockdown Baldock’s desire to video call highlights finish the themillers.co.uk caught up with Paul Warne via another video call to ask him season how he and his family are coping with George Baldock acknowledged the bigger picture of the Covid-19 pandemic but is adamant the currently suspended Premier League season should be played to a conclusion if safe to do so. Speaking to the local media on Wednesday, Baldock commented: “I see the bigger picture here, people have lost

All sides of the story With uncertainty the buzzword regarding any return of football around the world, Julian Börner can see all sides of the story. Plans for the game to resume in his native Germany have been punted back due to the COVID-19 crisis, while

loved ones, people are dying, people on the frontline have contracted the virus and sadly died, it’s really sad. “But with football, I just can’t see the logic of starting something without finishing something. That’s not me being biased with the season that we’ve had, I just feel that for the integrity of the game, no matter how long it takes, you’ve got to finish what you’ve started. “It’s not like we’ve played four or five games, some teams have nine games left , some have 10. I think we’ve got to finish this one before we start the next one, definitely.” “I’m up with anything to finish the season, I just think whatever sacrifices we have to make to finish the season we will do it, there are sacrifices being made ten-fold by frontline

workers and others that are working, sacrificing their lives to save this country.” Meanwhile, the popular defender was pleased to back at Shirecliffe earlier this week, as the players start to return to training individually for testing and specific sessions. He added: “It felt great, but a lot better before than it did after, after what we got put through. “It was good to drive in, see a few familiar faces from a distance and it gave me a bit of positivity that things might be getting back to normal soon. “Each player got a watt bike, which has been linked up to our phones and heart rate monitors, so we’ve been on that every morning for an hour or an hour and a half. It’s been tough and a lot of the lads would agree with me.

then another session in the evening either on the bike or a run in the park. “We’ve also had to do leg weights; a lot of the lads have taken weights home from the training ground or some of them have a bit of equipment at home. “Everything has been recorded, we’ve had to send in video evidence, so no stone has been left unturned. The manager is keeping a keen eye of us and I’m sure we’ll come back better than ever. “I actually feel really fit, we’ve had to stay on top of our weight. There’s been no shortcuts, you’ve got to do the work and if you don’t, there’s fines in place. If everyone has done it and I know they have, everyone will be fit and judging by the runs I did the other day, it was positive, and I felt fit.”

here in the UK clubs await further government guidance in the short and long term. Owls defender Börner is ready and waiting to pull on the training shirt but adamant that any solution must have firm foundations in place. He told swfc.co.uk: “In Germany they had the dates in mind to start playing again but now this must change. The first priority is a safe environment for everyone. “Speaking as a player, I want to train and I want to play, but it must be safe for everyone and I mean the players, the staff, the officials – anyone at all

who would be involved. “There must be testing available and is vital that the nurses and the doctors and the key workers have the access before football. “Football is important to millions of people but staying well and healthy is far more important.” Games will be played behind closed doors upon resumption, a concept to which Börner is not adverse given the circumstances, albeit one he would far from relish. He explained: “It will be the sensible thing to do but it will be very strange, like a pre-season game with no fans. “Fans make the football

and without them it will not be the same but the authorities are doing the right thing because people’s lives come before anything else. “It is so hard at the moment for everyone, there are bigger problems in the world. There are so many people who have lost their lives and so many who have the virus. “A lot of people cannot work, a lot of people have lost their jobs, businesses have closed down and may not return. The nurseries and the schools are closed, the economies around the world are at stake. All these things are much more important

lockdown. He provided iFollow Millers with an update on how the lads are faring both physically and psychologically, while also giving us the lowdown on what leisure activities he has enjoyed over recent weeks... Warne on the opportunity to sharpen his fitness from home during lockdown… “The exercise has been good. I’ve done more running than I have ever done I think. I’ve been joining in on the online classes that Ross [Burbeary] has been kindly putting on. “There is probably an hour-and-a-half a day of that, so that has been quite good.”

Warne on his contact with the coaching staff and Matt Hamshaw’s performance as quiz host… “Hammy has been great. I speak to Hammy and Rich on Facetime all the time because we’re doing loads of than football. “Football is a religion in Germany and England but football is not everything. There are bigger decisions to make, the political decisions that will affect us all and we must respect and have confidence in the people making these decisions. “For me, every day is a new one, I am a lucky one

at the moment. I do my running, I do my cycling, I am keeping as fit as I can and I miss the lads, I miss the ball at my feet, I miss the fans. “But I am well, my family is well, I am so thankful for that. We need everyone to be the same and stay the same before we can think of football coming back.”

different things and looking back over the season, over games, set pieces and things we can change or could have done better. “Hammy has kindly done the quiz for the last couple of weeks. “I mean I have noticed that the figures are dropping, so I might need to have a little chat with him about that, but we’re trying to do it so that we can have two or three different people present it at one time, which would be quite funny.” Warne on the importance of checking on his players’ emotional well-being during lockdown… “It is just about keeping in contact with people and the lads. I know they’re not at work so to speak but it is just to make sure we reach out and make sure everyone is okay. “Some of the lads live on their own and it is the same as loads of people in the community, but it is quite tough for a lot of people. It’s about making sure everyone is happy and healthy.” Warne on squad morale at present… “I think morale is quite good. I think the novelty of being at home has worn off because they’re pack animals. They’re used to being in groups with 30 of us at the training ground most days of the week. “For them to suddenly not have that is weird. “I think they all enjoy seeing each other and they’ll all look forward to coming back. If we do come back in a couple of week and we start with one-on-one [sessions] it will still be nice to see them all. “I think they’re coping alright. All of the lads seem to be. A lot of them have young children so that will have it’s own tests. It is always nice to be able to watch your kids grow up, so they shouldn’t take that for granted.” Warne on how the players are keeping themselves fit away from the club… “I think they’re ready to come and kick a ball again. They’ve been voluntarily running. I can see what everyone has been doing if they choose to do it – we can’t force them to do anything. “They’re keeping themselves on top of their fitness. I think they’re like everyone else really in that they’re missing a bit of football and just missing seeing people. “I was laughing with Hammy earlier because I’m going to struggle [when we’re back] - I’m a hugger aren’t I? This whole social distancing thing is hard for me!”
