Enjoy Sheffield’s parks but stay alert and stay safe Following the Government’s latest guidance, allowing us to spend more time in outdoor spaces, Sheffield City Council is urging people to stick to social distancing measures while enjoying the city’s beautiful green spaces. With more than 800 green spaces across the city, there is enough outdoor space for everyone to enjoy. In Sheffield you are never far from a park, woodland or the glorious countryside.

Sheffield City Council kept all park grounds open during the full lockdown period to allow people to take their daily exercise, but closed facilities such as playgrounds, toilets, games areas, and these remain closed. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “I know that daily exercise in our many beautiful local parks has been a saving grace for so many people in Sheffield,

including me. “We are extremely lucky that wherever you live in the city you can access green open space very easily and we knew how important that is at this very difficult time. “With the Government’s new guidance that people can spend more time in parks and meet, with social distance, with one person from another household I must ask everyone to stay alert and stay safe. Please do not get complacent. We have to adhere to social

distancing and if the place you visit is very busy, consider trying somewhere else. “I’d like to thank everyone who has been following social distancing guidelines, I know it’s very hard not to have close contact with friends and loved ones but it is essential and it is for everyone’s benefit. “It looks like we have more fair weather on the way, so get out there, have fun, keep fit, but stay safe.” A deserted Botanical

Gardens in Sheffield The Government’s updated guidance from 11 May states that people can now spend time outdoors – for example sitting and enjoying the fresh air, picnicking, or sunbathing, and meet one other person from a different household outdoors – following social distancing guidelines. It remains against the law for three or more people to gather in a public place unless they are from the same household. South Yorkshire Police will continue patrols across the city this weekend to encourage compliance with social distancing measures. They have the power to disperse gatherings and issue fines.

Sarah* started smoking at the age of 23 following nights out with friends who were smokers. On average she was smoking 6-10 per day but decided to stop smoking to follow a more healthy life style. Sarah attended smoking cessation support at her local GP surgery, weekly appointments for 12 weeks meant that she had the professional support she needed, Sarah found this support excellent and very helpful and without it she doubts she would be where she is now, which is smoke free. Apart from using Nicotine Replacement Products Sarah found remaining positive was a major factor for her and helped her on a daily basis. Since stopping smoking Sarah feels far less breathless than she did and has noticed a drastic improvement and feels she now has a far better health, something she didn’t have when she was smoking. Since stopping smoking

Sarah has saved over £180 in a very short space of time and plans to treat herself with a new wardrobe full of clothes. Sarah would tell anyone thinking about stopping smoking to never touch them as they control you, you don’t control them. Yorkshire Smoke Free would like to advise that during this current time of uncertainty due to the Covid 19 virus, we are still offering smoking cessation support. Appointments continue to take place by way of telephone support. Please do not hesitate to contact the service on 0114 321649.

PREMIER LEAGUE DARTS RE-SCHEDULED TO OCTOBER

The FlyDSA Arena in Sheffield is set to host the culmination of the Unibet Premier League season after the visit of the world’s top darts players was put back to Thursday October 15. April’s planned Premier League night in Sheffield had been originally postponed to July 2 as one of a number of rescheduled dates forced by the suspension of the season last month. However, the July date has now been moved back to October 15 - which means that Sheffield is now in line to host the semi-finals and final of

the Premier League season in one dramatic night, should there be no further changes needed to the revised schedule. Tickets purchased for the original league night (along with any pre-booked parking) will remain valid for the new date - if you have already received you tickets they’re still valid for the new date - you just need to show up on the night and they’ll be accepted. Any fans unable to attend the new date of the 15th October are entitled to a refund from their point of purchase.

NIGHT FISHING IS ALLOWED: STATEMENT FROM THE ANGLING TRUST

The government had previously announced that it intended to publish a new rule on travel that would mean that anyone travelling for sport and leisure would have to return home at the end of each day. This would have effectively banned night fishing.

However through our contacts at Sport England, Angling Trust have successfully lobbied for a change in wording. We are delighted to announce that the Government’s much anticipated new statement on travel and sport instead now reads: “From today (13th May 2020) people in England can spend more time outdoors and enjoy a wider range of activities for any length of time, subject to social distancing rules.” The Angling Trust’s view is that night fishing is allowed. A series of detailed FAQ’s from the Government will be circulated later. It is worth noting that overnight stays in holiday homes and camp sites are still banned and that with

the dynamic nature of this situation the Prime Minister has warned government guidelines could change quickly so we must all act responsibly. Jamie Cook, Angling Trust CEO, said: “This is a happy day for the angling community. We were front of the queue with being released from lockdown and have shown that we are stronger together. For now, please stay safe, keep social distancing and tight lines.”

We’ll be ready, say John and Enda John Egan and Enda Stevens have both praised the communication within the club, especially with the players being ‘kept in the loop’ with regards to a likely resumption of Premier League action. The Irish duo have also revealed the players have maintained their regular routines and

Trust receive community emergency fund from Sport England Rotherham United Community Sports Trust are pleased to announce Sport England have awarded the trust £10,000.00 to help support the local community during this ongoing global crisis. Since the government put restrictions in place, Rotherham United Community Sports Trust staff and Volunteers have

trained hard throughout the lockdown, following the safety protocols in place, despite the suspension of top-flight football which originally began on the 13th March. Egan commented: “It’s important, we’re being kept in the loop through the Club, via the skipper (Billy Sharp) and a lot of conference calls. “We’re being kept in the loop well and we’re just following our training programmes. I’m sure when the decisions are made, we will have a plan to make sure we’re as ready as possible. “We’re used to preseason and getting

ready for games. We’ve had some time off, but it’s not really been time off. I think George (Baldock) is right, some of the sessions have been really tough, everyone has done them and we’re making sure everyone is in the best possible shape to return and hit the ground running.” Stevens added: “We have communications and the protocols in place to prepare. We’ve just got to bide our time now, listen to the people in charge, the ones guiding us and respect the decisions they make. “I’ve my little girl to

keep me busy. I’ve kept

continued to support the vulnerable within the local community by assisting with trips to the local supermarkets and pharmacists to ensure they have adequate food supplies and medical prescriptions. Not only are they aiding with the essential trips to the shops, they also offer a way of communication for the most isolated households where

residents unfortunately don’t have family or friends readily available to chat via phone or text. Jamie Noble, Head of Community Said “Receiving additional resources to assist in our ongoing efforts to support our community in this unfortunate time is essential, we are grateful to all our funders and couldn’t continue the inspirational work without

them.” “I’m overjoyed by the response of the local community, the unity shown is unprecedented and I would like to thank each and every staff member and volunteer for their continued efforts in supporting the local community”. that routine of waking up and doing my gym sessions and training sessions within the hours that we would have been used to. “I’ve then been going out and having that bit of exercise, take the dog for a walk with my missus and the baby, it clears your head a bit. “The weeks tend to pass you by really quickly, it’s more the weekends that tend to slow you down. We’ve had some great weather in Sheffield, so that’s helped.”

Owls loan duo feature in 2.Bundesliga Matt Penney and Joost van Aken both resumed their campaign on loan in 2. Bundesliga over the weekend. Penney joined St Pauli on a season-long loan last

August to link back up with former Owls manager Jos Luhukay. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the German leagues postponed all fixtures in early March but returned over the weekend with St Pauli at home to FC Nuremberg. Penney was named in the starting line-up and featured for 67 minutes as his loan club registered a 1-0 win to move up to ninth in the table. The Wednesday academy product has enjoyed a productive loan spell in Germany with 14 St Pauli appearances under his belt and one goal which came in the big derby clash away at Hamburg. Defender Van Aken is also on loan in the same division - 2.Bundesliga – for VFL Osnabruck. For Van Aken and co. it was a tough restart against big rivals and league leaders Armenia Bielefeld. Van Aken started for Osnabruck in the derby and was at the heart of the early action when bringing down Fabian Klos in the box after 16 minutes. The same man picked himself up to convert the resulting penalty.

Anderson: Barrow loan was best thing for me Tom Anderson says that time spent on loan at nonleague clubs when he was a young pro gave him the best start to his professional career. After signing his first deal for Burnley in 2012, Anderson went on nine loans (including Rovers) over the next six years in order to help him get grow as a player and learn about first-team football. The first of these loans was a spell at Conference side Barrow when he was still a teenager and looking back the centre-back believes was probably one of the best decision he’s made. “My loan to Barrow was probably the best thing for me if I’m being perfectly honesty because you go from playing youth team football where I was one of the biggest and strongest and then you go into National League,” he said. “I think in my first ten games there, I broke my nose twice and got a few cuts. It’s a good standard and it was so beneficial for me both on the pitch and off it.” It was not just the physicality that was new for Anderson, it was also the mental side and the will to win which was an important part of first-team football. “It teaches you the mentality you need,” he added. “You go from the youth team where it’s nicey-nicey and you’re playing against people you know every week, and then you’re coming up against men who want to win and they’ll do what it takes to win. “It was good to get used to a first-team dressing room, which, when you’ve been in youth football, it can take a while to get used to. Everybody’s different - some people can settle in in a few weeks, others take a few season to get used to it. “Looking back now, I think that was the best thing I did.”

But Osnabruck hit a 93rd minute equaliser to rescue a point with Marcos Alvarez on target. It was an important point for Osnabruck, who are now two points above the relegation zone. Van Aken has made 21 appearances this season for Osnabruck.
