an it really be the tenth year of the National Cajun and Zydeco Festival?
Founded in 1990 with an event that seems miniscule by modern standards – just four concerts over two days – the decade has seen the festival go from strength to strength, growing to become one of the most important dates on the UK Cajun calendar. These ten years have brought some great names to Bury, with classic performances by Eddie LeJeune, D L Menard, Canray Fontenot, C J Chenier, Lisa Haley, and many more. For this anniversary festival, we’ve brought back some old friends from previous years. The Flatville Aces and R Cajun and the Zydeco Brothers first appeared in ‘91, The Cajun Company and Zydeco Active in ‘96.
But it’s not all nostalgia. As always with the Bury Festival, we like to look to the future of Cajun and zydeco music as much as to the past. This year we’re proud to introduce J Paul JR and the Zydeco New Breeds – a dynamic young zydeco band who we feel sure are going to be enormous! What can we say but laissez les bon temps roulez – let the good times roll! We are extremely grateful to Manchester Airport for their generous sponsorship of the festival. Many thanks to Frank Warren of Matters Musical for helping to make this festival happen.

Charivari Charivari come from Evangeline Parish in the state of Louisiana – heartland of Cajun and birthplace of some of its most famous musicians. Formerly known as the Mamou Prairie Band, they are a high energy, traditional outfit who use all the different aspects and styles of Cajun music in their performances. The songs they perform include waltzes, twosteps, fiddle tunes, Creole and zydeco songs – classic pieces and their own compositions. Hailed in Louisiana as the best new band around, Charivari are now taking the sound of Cajun music out to the world.

Adding modern hip-hop, R&B and gospel to traditional zydeco sounds, the band have brought a whole new audience to the music in the US – whilst keeping traditionalist fans happy with the sort of down-home accordion playing and soulful singing that they love to hear.

& The Flatville Aces Support comes from Southampton’s The Flatville Aces, who are possibly Britain’s most respected traditional cajun band, playing with a vigorous Louisiana flair which Eddie LeJeune has described as “truly authentic”. Probably the best Cajun fiddle player in Europe, Jock Tyldesley has also been known to work his excellent Cajun French vocal inflections with Cajun bands in and from Louisiana. Inspired by recordings from the 1920s and '30s the band capture the authentic sounds of early Cajun, playing in a traditional Louisiana style with two fiddles, guitar, accordion and triangle but no drums. The band's success in capturing the authentic flavour of old time Cajun was confirmed when in 1997 they were nominated for an award by the Cajun French Music Association in Lafayette – the only European band ever to be paid such an honour.

Adding modern hip-hop, R&B and gospel to traditional zydeco sounds, the band have brought a whole new audience to the music in the US – whilst keeping traditionalist fans happy with the sort of down-home accordion playing and soulful singing that they love to hear.

& The Flatville Aces Support comes from Southampton’s The Flatville Aces, who are possibly Britain’s most respected traditional cajun band, playing with a vigorous Louisiana flair which Eddie LeJeune has described as “truly authentic”. Probably the best Cajun fiddle player in Europe, Jock Tyldesley has also been known to work his excellent Cajun French vocal inflections with Cajun bands in and from Louisiana. The Cajun Company The Cajun Company are Holland’s premier Cajun band. Inspired by recordings from the 1920s and '30s the band capture the authentic sounds of early Cajun, playing in a traditional Louisiana style with two fiddles, guitar, accordion and triangle but no drums. The band's success in capturing the authentic flavour of old time Cajun was confirmed when in 1997 they were nominated for an award by the Cajun French Music Association in Lafayette – the only European band ever to be paid such an honour.

R Cajun and the Zydeco Brothers The weekend’s final session kicks off with a set from R Cajun and the Zydeco Brothers – Britain’s longest established home-grown Cajun band. Great Cajun, plus zydeco and Swamp Blues too.
Zydeco Active Zydeco Active is Britain’s first zydeco supergroup, five musicians who play the funky new style zydeco currently taking American dancehalls by storm. Blending zydeco’s traditional high energy rhythms and French lyrics with a driving edge which is definitely nineties, Zydeco Active are an awesomely groovy contemporary dance band.
