MARTIN SIMPSON

TINY TIN LADY

The haunting music of tragic singer-songwriter Nick Drake still resonates with fans the world over. His poignant melodies and distinctive playing led many current top artists to cite him as a major influence, from Paul Weller to Badly Drawn Boy. Keith James’ concert is a loving re-appraisal of Drake’s timeless music.

Nine Below Zero’s fierce live reputation grew as the band emerged from the ashes of the punk scene in 1979. Their raucous maximum R ’n’ B has seen them wowing audiences all over the world ever since. With Ray Davies, Pete Townsend and Eric Clapton amongst their fans, who are we to disagree?

Winner of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Music Awards ‘Musician of the Year’ in 2004, Martin Simpson is a virtuoso guitarist with a wonderful voice and an idiosyncratic style revered amongst fans and musicians alike. Martin will be playing material from his new album Kind Letters.

Since playing to 20,000 people at the Cropredy festival in only their 4th gig, Tiny Tin Lady have gone on to win many admirers. These three teenagers from St Helens blend classic writing with beautiful harmonies that belie their years.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF

THE KATHRYN TICKELL BAND

DABY TOURE

Bob Cheevers is a master storyteller from the heartland of America. With a beguiling voice that pitches somewhere between Willie Nelson and Neil Young, his songs are full of humour, pathos and real life. An Emmy award winner, Bob’s rootsy, bluesy songs deliver tales of the Delta straight from the heart.

This year’s musical from Prestwich Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society is Jerry Bock’s classic tale of the struggle between love and life in a small Jewish community. It is the story of a father who has to make the right decisions for his family and features timeless songs such as Matchmaker and If I Were A Rich Man.

Kathryn Tickell is one of Britain’s most acclaimed folk musicians. A recording artist since the age of 16, she mixes her own compositions with traditional folk, played on the Northumbrian Smallpipes and the fiddle. Her current band combines mandolin, melodeon, guitar and fiddle to haunting or lively effect.

Daby Toure’s remarkable music reflects the broad cultural spectrum of his life. From Senagalese roots come tribal rhythms, through adolescence in North Africa, to playing the bars of Paris. His blend of jazz and folk with Afro-centric pop has filled stadiums around Europe as support on Peter Gabriel’s last tour.

The former Squeeze man comes to The Met with his distinctive, catchy brand of ‘pop music for grown-ups’.
