WE WANT TO BUILD A BETTER MET

We gratefully acknowledge the support of our funders and sponsors:

BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE IT HAPPEN The Met is a much loved venue, but our 165 year-old building is starting to show its age. We want to refurbish and improve the building, to create an exciting and vibrant space for you and for artists, while retaining The Met’s unique character. We’re calling this project A Better Met, and for the past three years we’ve been working hard behindthe-scenes to make it happen. Transforming the building will cost £4.6 million, of which we’ve already raised £4.1 million. We need your help to find the final £500,000. R 0161 761 2216

HOW CAN YOU HELP? The best way to help is by making a donation. You can donate on our website, by text (to send £5 right now text BMAA01 to 70070), at our ticket office or at an event (look out for the red buckets). Every penny helps. WANT TO KNOW MORE? Come along to our open evening on Friday 10 October and hear more about our plans. We’ve been overwhelmed by the support for the project so far and with almost 90% of our fundraising target already achieved, we hope you’ll join us in the final push to create a brilliant venue for arts and music in Bury. “Sublime fiddle playing and the passionate delivery of evocative old songs by their ablest interpretor.” Telegraph on Dave Swarbrick

The remarkable duo of Martin Carthy (Radio 2 Folk Lifetime Achievement Award winner 2014) and Dave Swarbrick created a new era of English instrumental folk music and a new approach to folk altogether.

Returning with all the old skills and a new collection of songs, their experienced approach lacks none of the fervour of their early days, and brings a maturity born of many years living in the music.

Thursday 25 September 8pm / £15 / £13 concession In 2009 Bellowhead fiddler Sam Sweeney bought a violin in Oxford. It looked like a new instrument but the label inside gave the date 1915. Research revealed that the violin had been made – but never finished – by a music hall performer from Leeds called Richard Spencer Howard.

He had been conscripted in 1915 and two years later was killed in battle. The pieces of the unfinished violin were given to his daughter, who kept them all her life as a memory of her father. After her death the violin was auctioned and finally finished in 2007. The history of the fiddle that took almost 100 years to complete has inspired Sam to create this multimedia performance telling it’s incredible story.

The Queen’s Knickers

Dale Storr Friday 31 October 8pm / £10

Presented by The egg and Southbank Centre Saturday 1 November 1.30pm / £10 What would you do if you lost the Queen’s pants? Dilys, the Queen’s maid, is the custodian of her Majesty’s ‘intimate apparel’, otherwise known as the Queen’s knickers. She guards HRH’s smalls as if they were the crown jewels. She would be mortified if anyone got a glimpse of them. But one day the knickers go missing, causing a national

state of emergency and a diplomatic incident of catastrophic proportions. A celebration of the garments we all wear, but never show, this children's classic is inventively told by two elastic actors.

The Music of New Orleans

“Dale is the best New Orleans player I've ever heard” Richard Hawley

Inspired by legends such as Dr John and James Booker, Dale Storr is now recognised as the UK’s leading exponent of New Orleans piano. Before going solo Dale played for the likes of Eugene ‘Hideaway’ Bridges and Earl Thomas and has been nominated four times

for Best Piano Player in the British Blues Awards. Dale’s ambition has always been to play the music of New Orleans, which can be anything from a classically influenced minuet, a latin rhumba, a back o’ town junker blues to a frenzied boogie woogie.
