festival of English folk music returns to Bury, Greater Manchester, this October for three days of great music at venues across the town. Now in its third year, Homegrown features thirteen concerts across the weekend of 16-18 October. Highlights include popular Devon folk stars Show of Hands, Cornish singing legends Fisherman’s Friends, a special concert by Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band, a rare appearance by BBC 6Music’s Tom Robinson and a performance by chart-topping folk-pop duo Nizlopi. We look forward to welcoming you to Homegrown for an entertaining and enlightening weekend of English folk.

Spiro use folk friendly instruments and the odd traditional tune, but there is also an affinity with contemporary classical and dance music. Their music is sweeping, majestic and cinematic – essentially English and beautifully brilliant.
Leveret is the new trio from Andy Cutting, Sam Sweeney and Rob Harbron, three of England’s foremost acoustic musicians. They join forces to play traditional and new compositions with style, virtuosity and humour. Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker combine classically trained musicianship with Josienne’s jewel-like voice to produce ageless stories of love and loss. Nominees for the 2014 BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award, their new album, Fire and Fortune, was released in July.

Harp and a Monkey are electro-folk-storytellers imbued with a deep Lancashire sensibility that shines through in their beautifully crafted vignettes of northern life, love and remembrance. Their latest album All Life is Here was released this spring.
Fronted by singer Jade Rhiannon, supported by rich vocal harmonies and sensitive acoustic musicianship The Willows draw inspiration from British and American folk traditions. Their album Beneath Our Humble Soil was nominated for Best Debut in the Spiral Earth Awards 2014.

Fisherman’s Friends are singers from Port Isaac who have delighted visitors and locals there for more than fifteen years, meshing their voices in a rousing and joyful set of shanties and Cornish folk songs. Every member of this unique group are or have been fishermen, lifeboat men and coastguards, and learnt their powerful brand of Cornish harmony singing at the local Methodist chapel. They have skyrocketed from singing in their local pub to playing the main stage at Glastonbury.
“Master of the mouth harp” (Uncut) Will Pound is in demand as a live performer and session musician, in his award-winning duo with
‘banjo wizard’ Dan Walsh and on The Hillsborough Single, which featured Sir Paul McCartney, Mel C and Beverly Knight. Twice nominated for Musician of the Year at the BBC Folk Awards, with The Will Pound Band he tours with Chris Sarjeant, Henry Webster and John Parker playing a mix of jazz, bluegrass, blues, rock and funk rhythms.

Faustus brings to the stage Saul Rose, Benji Kirkpatrick and Paul Sartin, three of the leading English players of their generation. Lisa Knapp won Best Original Song for Two Ravens at the 2014 Radio 2 Folk Awards. “Songs that twist, turn and constantly surprise” The Guardian.
In their surprisingly engaging and often hilarious show, The Hut People perform a high-octane blend of folk from around the world embellished with foot stomping accordion, a mind-boggling array of percussion and a bit of dancing for good measure.
Blair Dunlop crafts deep and meaningful songs that connect with people on an emotional level. His new album, House of Jacks, was released in May.

Known on the folk scene for their appearances with The Unthanks, for this special Homegrown concert Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band will perform brass arrangements of English traditional tunes and a selection of rousing brass band favourites as well as a very special collaboration with Lucy Ward. One of the hottest performers on the UK folk scene, in 2014 Lucy became one of the youngest people ever to be nominated for the BBC Folk Singer of the Year award.
John Spiers is a squeezebox master best-known for his work with Bellowhead and his duo with Jon Boden.

In Melrose Quartet multiple Folk Award winners Nancy Kerr and James Fagan join forces with Sheffield duo Richard and Jess Arrowsmith. The band have a bold take on English songs and tunes with four-part harmony singing combined with twin fiddles, melodeon and bouzouki.

Luke Daniels is a musician and singer-songwriter whose work explores life, love, doubt and faith. Previous winner of BBC Young Tradition Award, Luke comes to Homegrown with his new album, What’s Here What’s Gone. Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman are two of the British folk scene’s most accomplished performers.

Show Of Hands are one of England’s most successful acoustic roots duos – Steve Knightley and Phil Beer. Their widespread appeal is based on the combined power of Steve’s original songs, the quality of their vocals and harmonies, and their multiinstrumental virtuosity. With performances featuring guitars, mandocello, fiddle, cuatro, viola and concertina, the duo have built up a huge following which has seen them sell out the Royal Albert Hall three times, headline festivals from Glastonbury to WOMAD and play across the world from Europe to America, Australia and India.
Philip Henry and Hannah Martin won Best Duo at the 2014 BBC Folk Awards. Inventive, mournful, haunting and compelling, each of their songs is a fresh journey of discovery – twisting, curling melodies and eclectic rhythms around perceptive lyrics.
The Old Dance School’s ear-bending contemporary folk features duelling fiddles, soaring brass and irresistible grooves. Their provocative songs and cinematic sound has won them acclaim throughout the country.

Best known as the underground act that topped the UK and Irish charts with The JCB song in 2005, Nizlopi have a reputation for unforgettable live shows. John Parker (double bass/beat box) and Luke Concannon (vocals/guitar), have made folk hip-hop their own private genre and when they perform live, they are a positive force like no other.
Winter Mountain blend melodic folk songs and heartfelt lyrics to create sixtiesstyle harmony pop reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel or Crosby, Stills and Nash.

Teesside trio The Young’uns beguile with their irrepressible humour, bold vocals and sublime a cappella harmonies. BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year Bella Hardy pairs up with Canadian singer-songwriter Cara Luft to perform new material created as part of a UK/Canada songwriting exchange.
