celebration of the current folk and acoustic scene in England, Homegrown Festival presents individual concerts across Bury over three days in October.

The festival steps beyond the usual to reach new audiences and showcase a breadth of styles and influences to snapshot this evolving and exciting aspect of the English live music scene. Highlights include all plucking, all singing superstars The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain; folk legends Steeleye Span; Turin Brakes; flute, whistle and uilleann pipes maestro Michael McGoldrick; and singersongwriter Nancy Kerr. Our international partnership ensures vibrant contrast and exciting collaboration, which is at the heart of any good festival. This year, three of the best bands from the Flanders region of Belgium join us across the weekend – we’re excited to bring you Surpluz, Trio Dhoore and WÖR. We look forward to welcoming you to Homegrown for an entertaining weekend of the finest English, and Flemish, folk.

Homegrown is organised by Bury Metropolitan Arts Association, a registered charity (no 701879). We gratefully acknowledge the support of our funders and sponsors.

Thursday 13 October Megan Henwood

Turin Brakes Megan Henwood 7.30pm

The Elizabethan Suite £20

One of the finest indie bands of the last decade who have sold over a million records to date, Turin Brakes continue to produce powerful new music as their journey continues. Their seventh studio album Lost Property reached the UK top forty album charts on its release in January this year and the first single from the album Keep Me Around was A-listed on BBC Radio 2.

“the whole album yields a little more magic with each play.” CCCC Q

Award-winning singersongwriter Megan Henwood makes music that defies the boundaries others have tried to place around her. A distinctive new voice she writes with an honesty that finds her dealing with deeply personal themes. Influences of idiosyncratic singer-songwriters such as Elliott Smith, Bill Withers and Anaïs Mitchell can be heard in her writing.

“Comparisons to Laura Marling are too hard to resist... a fabulous voice and some fire in her belly.” Mojo

Michael McGoldrick Band James Delarre & Saul Rose Megson 7.30pm

Castle Armoury Drill Hall £20

Manchester-born flute, whistle and uilleann pipe maestro Michael McGoldrick is a cofounder of Flook and Lúnasa and a linchpin of Capercaillie’s line-up. He has performed with a stellar list of collaborators, including Bob Dylan, Mark Knopfler, Youssou N’Dour, Zakir Hussain and John Cale. However his true genius lies in his trailblazing work as a player and composer, brilliantly showcased on his three solo albums to date.

New duo James Delarre and Saul Rose combine thrilling fiddle performances with some of the finest melodeon playing. Together they produce flowing melodies, rich harmony and considered vocal delivery. Their joy in playing music together is hypnotic, captivating and addictive.

Michael McGoldrick Husband and wife duo Megson bring an infectious mix of heavenly vocals, lush harmonies and driving rhythmic guitars.

Belinda O’Hooley and Heidi Tidow are “one of folk’s mightiest combinations” (Mojo). Their powerful, deeply moving performances are infused with an honesty and empathy that will disarm even the hardest of heart. One of the only bands of the ‘young generation’ of folk musicians in Flanders, Surpluz put their own twist on traditional Flemish songs. Will Pound is one of the finest harmonica players of his generation. Eddy Jay is a master of the accordion. Together they are forging a path to new folk sounds.

Heg and The Wolf Chorus create theatrical original folk which draws inspiration from fairy tales, taking the listener on a journey from Grimm’s fantastical forests, across the stormy Atlantic to the black, dangerous coal mines of Illinois and far beyond.

Holy Moly & The Crackers Flats & Sharps Holly Macve 7.30pm

Fusilier Museum £12

Holy Moly and The Crackers are a seven-piece “gypsy folk’n’roll” band who are influenced by an eclectic range of styles and artists: the grit and gravel of Woody Guthrie, the gypsy bone-cage burlesque of Gogol Bordello, and the spectral clarity of Joni Mitchell. They play a unique mash-up of folk/blues, waltz tempos, hoe-downs and french zazou in outlandish carnival style. It’s loud, funky and fun.

Flats and Sharps blur the lines between bluegrass, folk, country and pop, performing their own highly original songs as well as renditions of bluegrass classics.

“...effortlessly entertaining.” Mark Ellen, R2 Magazine

Holly Macve is a 20 year old singersongwriter from Yorkshire.

Marry Waterson & David A Jaycock

Trio Dhoore 7.30pm

Castle Armoury Drill Hall £20

“Perfectly balances traditional and contemporary [folk]… echoes of Nick Drake, Vashti Bunyan and Sandy Denny.” CCCC Metro

Steeleye Span are one of the most influential names in British roots music. Pioneers of folk-rock, they changed the face of folk music forever, taking it out of small clubs and into the world of gold discs and international tours. Members have come and gone over the years, but Steeleye has always remained at the forefront of the genre they helped to define. Expect to hear many familiar classics next to gems both old and new, all delivered with a burning passion and unrivalled experience.

Part of the astounding Waterson-Knight-Carthy musical dynasty, Marry Waterson is joined by David A Jaycock to perform tracks from their album Two Wolves. Said to echo the surreal poetic appeal of her mother Lal Waterson’s work, Marry and David’s songs are slow but varied, plaintive and quietly powerful.

New instrumental Flemish folk band Trio Dhoore collect stories and encounters with fascinating people to create upbeat grooves and swinging melodies.

“...a wonderful listening experience ...catchy melodies, tight grooves.” Folk World
