(LBR/LP/VSM/PIA4BPalawan)

BFAR issues red tide alert in Honda Bay, Palawan PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan (PIA) -- The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has issued a red tide alert in Honda Bay, Puerto Princesa City. The agency said all types of shellfish, including alamang are not fit for human consumption. City Agriculturist Melissa Macasaet said that her office received the BFAR advisory on July 23 which bans the gathering and eating of shellfish taken from the Honda Bay where shellfishes routinely collected and tested by BFAR resulted positive to paralytic poison beyond the regulatory limit. She said that the laboratory results registered 108 micrograms/100 grams of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxin level which is way above the normal level of 60 PSP. In a radio interview, Macasaet said that her office together with concerned offices in the city government conducted information dissemination of the red tide alert specifically among the officials of the affected barangays, fish market vendors, and other food establishments in the city. So far, there has been no report of victims of possible paralytic poisoning due to the red tide. Macasaet said that developments of the red tide bloom are under continuous surveillance and monitoring not only in the Honda Bay but including the Puerto Princesa Bay as well. The bulletin states that fish, squids, shrimps and crabs are safe for human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly and internal organs such as gills, and intestines are removed before cooking. The last red tide occurrence in Honda and Puerto Princesa Bay was in 2010. (LBR/VSM/PIA4B/Palawan)

A. 10586), Motorcycle Helmet Act (R.A. 10054) at Land Transportation and Traffic Code of the Philippines (R.A. 4136).

Jocelyn D. Santiago, MD,DPCOM at Dr. Onesimo M. Panaligan na pawing mula sa PEME Inc. Government to build cold storage facility, new ports for fishermen By Lyndon Plantilla QUEZON CITY. The President assures fisherfolks that they can look forward to better days ahead. In his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA), Monday, President Benigno Simeon Aquino III announced several initiatives to boost fisherfolks' earnings and uplift their living conditions. Citing the Municipality of Bataraza, Palawan as example, the President said a cold storage facility will be put up in this town to help the fisherfolks maintain the freshness of their catch and command the right price in the market. Bataraza, a town about 5 to 6 hours away from Puerto Princesa City, is located in the southernmost tip of Mainland Palawan near the municipalities of Rizal and Brookes' Point. Aside from fishing, people in Bataraza are also into farming. The President reported that Bataraza is surrounded with water yet its fishermen, just like other fishermen and fisherfolks around the country, could not dictate the right price for their fish because of their inability to keep it fresh.

(But because the fish cannot be brought to the merchants on time, still fresh, the fishermen end up having to dry the fish and sell tuyo instead. It is such a waste, because every three kilos of lapu-lapu is only equivalent to one kilo of tuyo. What if the freshness of the fish could be preserved in a cold storage facility? You could go to the merchant and still sell your catch at full price. That's why Bataraza will have its cold storage facility)," said the President. The President lamented that 41 percent of fishermen are poor based on statistics in 2009. They hunted fish for the country but what was left to their families, were only fish bones and spines)," the President said. Yet, the fishery sector, as reported by the President, contributed Php 193.65-Billion in the economy last year. To raise productivity and increase incomes of all fisherfolks, the President said government will build more seaports in strategic places as well as improve roads, bridges and other infrastructures. The President also took the opportunity to ask members of this sector to help conserve their sole source of livelihood by allowing some time for the seas to rest and recover from fishing activities. The Department of the Interior and Local Government, he added, is working with the Philippine Coast Guard and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources to prevent ove rfishing in the seas.
