Bill Gates visits ICRISAT Hyderabad, India —Mr. Bill Gates, Co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, visited the ICRISAT headquarters in Patancheru, Hyderabad . This was Mr. Gates’ first visit to this Institute where he held discussions with the management and several key scientists to gain a better appreciation of the foundation’s research for development investments to ICRISAT. With food insecurity and malnutrition persisting as the greatest challenges facing humanity in the coming decades, Mr Gates acknowledged the potential of ICRISAT‟s works on grain legumes and dryland cereals in helping millions of smallholders farmers in the drylands of Asia and sub-Saharan Africa lift themselves out of hunL-R: ICRISAT Director General, Dr William Dar & The Ambassador of ger, malnutrition and Goodwill, Mr. Bill Gates. poverty. “ICRISAT crops are great – as they target millions of smallholder farmers globally,” said Mr Gates. The tour highlighted the uniqueness and importance of theworks and initiatives of ICRISAT and its partners, particularly in providing modern crop improvement technologies and best management practices on once „orphan‟ or neglected crops like grain legumes and dryland cereals. “The drylands are home to 644 million poorest of the poor, and highly nutritious, drought-tolerant crops such as grain legumes and dryland cereals are the best bets for smallholder farmers in these marginal environments to survive and improve their livelihoods,” explains Dr William Dar, ICRISAT Director General. Dr David Hoisington, ICRISAT Deputy Director General for Research, highlighted the case of grain legumes and dryland cereals: “Chickpea, pigeonpea and groundnut are the „poor people‟s meat‟ – crucial for ending global malnutrition. Sorghum and millets provide food security to the poorest people.” ICRISAT scientists demonstrated the different high-end sciences that the institute uses – genomics, bioinformatics, phenotyping and genetic engineering – all integrated or complementing each other as part of its crop improvement program for smallholder farming. Considered as international public goods, scientists and national partners worldwide can have free access to ICRISAT‟s genotyping and phenotyping data, captured and analyzed through its work on bioinformatics, for their respective molecular breeding processes. “That was cool!” was how Mr Gates reacted on ICRISAT‟s lysimeter facility for phenotyping, a first of its kind in the world and the largest within the CGIAR system. The facility is now being successfully used for measuring plant responses to water stress related to drought and climate change adaptation. Mr Gates also engaged in a roundtable discussion with ICRISAT scientists on the impacts and challenges of applying the science on the ground. Two projects funded by the foundation were highlighted as the case: the HOPE project (Harnessing Opportunities for Productivity Enhancement of Sorghum and Millets)

The New Shepherd of Imus By: Jose Eduardo Mayo OfmCapuchin The Cathedral church of the Diocese of Imus was a flurry of gold: bright yellow banners of the diocesan sigil stood out beside the crimson red background of the seal of the Holy See, over three hundred priests decked in wide gold stoles brilliant against immaculately white albs, the procession of over fifty bishops with mitres embroidered with gold thread and chasubles delicately designed in the gold-andwhite palette of the Roman Church, and the church itself seemingly aglow in gold as incandescent tungsten lights bounced off the reddish adobe walls. The canonical possession of the new bishop (secular Franciscan Reynaldo Evangelista, OFS, DD) of the local church of Cavite was adorned with all the fitting elegance and regalia that could have been mustered: the choir sang majestically, the liturgy was deliberate, precise, and impeccably organized, and there was a clear joyfulness in the atmosphere among the clergy, religious, and laity present within the temple. of course, there were some technical glitches here and there (who can trust technology, really?) and there were some frustrated parishioners that insisted beyond the call of charity to be let inside the relatively small cathedral (as an act of hospitality, guests were the ones allowed inside--local laity were positioned outside the church); aside from these almost-normal occurrences, the formal welcoming of the new bishop went extremely well. Kudos to the liturgists and seminarians of the diocese!

Demonstrasyon sa paggamit ng Inbred Varietis ng palay isinagawa sa Calapan By Luis T. Cueto CALAPAN, Oriental Mindoro, (PIA) -- Nagsagawa ng demonstrasyon sa lungsod kamakailan ang National Seed Industry Council (NSIC) ukol sa paggamit ng Inbred Varieties bilang punla ng palay. Humigit-kumulang sa 60 magsasaka mula sa iba‟t ibang barangay ng lungsod ng Calapan ang nabiyayaan ng bagong impormasyon na ipinagkaloob dito ng Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Field Unit (RFU) IV-B katuwang ang City Agricultural Services Department (CASD). Ang pagsasagawa ng demonstrasyon ay naglalayong maipakita sa mga magsasaka ang kaibahan at mga benepisyo sa paggamit ng pagtatanim ng Inbred Varieties na punla ng palay. Ayon kay Marcela Bagos, CASD Agriculturist, sa pamamagitan ng ganitong gawain ay naipapaabot sa mga magsasaka kung aling binhi ang mas madaling anihin at kung aling binhi ang masmadaling kapitan ng sakit. DSWD database reveals poor households in MIMAROPA QUEZON CITY, (PIA) -- The National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction (NHTSPR) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office IV- MiMaRoPa has identified 242,633 poor households in the region. Out of the 513,759 total number of households assessed, 47.1 percent or 1,364,844 individuals are considered poor. NHTSPR is an information management system that identifies „who and where the poor are‟ nationwide. This is conducted thru household assessment using the department‟s Household Assessment Form (HAF). The said form contains verifiable variables which help to determine the socio-economic status such as household composition, housing structure, demographic profile, household with PWD members, access to basic necessities and Indigenous People household. . The household assessments were completed last December 2009 covering the five provinces, two cities 71 municipalities and 1,458 barangays. The province of Palawan has 95,952 identified poor households while 73,878 poor households in Oriental Mindoro. There are 37, 421 poor households in Occidental Mindoro and 21,230 poor households in Romblon. Nonetheless Marinduque has 14,152 poor households. Most of these poor households are found in rural areas with 83.7 % share while 16.3% reside in urban areas. DSWD uses the Proxy Means Test (PMT), a statistical formula that approximates income to determine the poor using the socio-economic variables. The estimated household income will be compared to the poverty threshold. As of May 2013, the Department has 167,803 households beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program out of the identified number of poor. The data are now available to National Government Agencies, Local Government Units and other stakeholders advocating for social protection programs thru a Memorandum of Agreement on Data Sharing with the department. International Food Expo, naging matagumpay By Voltaire Dequina SAN JOSE, Occidental Mindoro, (PIA) -- Naging matagumpay ang ginanap na International Food Expo sa SMX Convention Center sa lungsod ng Pasay na katatapos lamang kamakailan. Ang naturang food expo ay pinangunahan ng Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) sa pamamagitan ng Center for Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM). Ang CITEM ay isang export promotion agency ng kagawaran na naging daan upang magkaroon ng international linkages ang mga Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sa nasabing expo, lalo na ang mga nagmula sa mga lalawigan ng Occidental at Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon at Palawan (Mimaropa). Ayon kay DTI 4B Regional Director Joel Valera minabuti nilang kumuha ng isang pavilion upang mabigyan ng sapat na espasyo ang mga produktong dala ng Mimaropa. Ang pavilion na ito ay may 14 stalls kung saan ang isang stall ay may sukat na 2x3 metro. Ang lalawigan ng Occidental Mindoro ay kinatawan ng tatlong Tuna dealers at buyers mula sa bayan ng Mamburao at Sablayan. Ang mga ito ay sina Marites Evangelista ng Tuna Queen Fish Dealer, Avelino Fulgencio ng NM Fish Buyer at Michael Gerance may ari ng Percy Fish Buyer. Isinali naman ng Oriental Mindoro ang kilalang Suman sa Lihiya, banana chips at iba pang exotic foods na timplado. Kasoy sa Palawan, uraro at iba pang coconut based products tulad ng coconut virgin oil sa Marinduque at peanut butter naman sa Romblon na gawa sa coco sugar. Sinasabing ang peanut butter na ito ay ginawa para sa mga may sakit na diabetes. Dagdag pa ni Valera na dahil sa ang layunin ng trade mission ay market matching at international linkages, hindi masyado pinagtuunan ng pansin ang kita sa retail ng bawat pwesto. Alay Tanim Project sa Marinduque, isinagawa Ni Mayda Lagran BOAC, Marinduque, (PIA) -- Sa ikalawang taon ngayon, muling naisakatuparan ang Alay Tanim Project sa Barangay Balanacan, Marinduque. Ang naturang proyekto ay isinagawa sa Balanacan Watershed at nagtulong-tulong ang 23 implementors at 50 estudyante ng Alternative Learning System (ALS) kasama ang ilang kawani at mamamayan mula sa Barangay Balanacan. Layunin ng proyektong ito na maisalba ang kagubatan sa pamamagitan ng pagtatanim nga mga puno at maproteksiyunan ito hindi lamang mula sa “forest degradation” kung hindi para maiwasan ang pagguho ng lupa o landslide. Napili ang Balanacan Watershed dahil sa paniniwalang ang pagtatanim ng mga punong kahoy ay makakatulong din sa magandang daloy at sistema ng tubig dito, lalo‟t marami sa lugar na ito ang hirap sa suplay ng tubig. Ang proyekto ay pinangungunahan ni ALS Supervisor Antonio M. Osicos, Balanacan barangay kapitan Arnulfo del Prado at ALS district coordinator na si Michelle Mutya. Ito ay bilang pagtalima sa DepEd Order No. 3, s. 2012 (ALS Lingap Kalikasan) at Executive Order No. 26 o National Greening Program ng pamahalaan, sa pakikipagtulungan ng Bureau of Alternative Learning System-Department of Education. Naisagawa na ito noong Mayo 27 sa barangay Bantay at noong Mayo 29 sa barangay Bangcuangan, Sta. Cruz. Sa Hunyo 4 naman ito gagawin sa barangay Daat, Sihi, Buenavista; sa Hunyo 6 naman ay sa barangay Bachao, Gasan at Hunyo 9 sa Sitio Kay Puerto, Brgy.Malibago, Torrijos. (LBR/MNL-PIA4B Marinduque)
Paraan ng pagsugpo ng sakit na Dengue mas pinapalakas By Orlan C. Jabagat\
PUERTO PRINCESA, Palawan, (PIA) -- Nagsagawa ng tatlong araw na pagsasanay ang Provincial Health Office (PHO) kasama ang iba’t ibang tanggapan para sa pagpapalakas ng pamamaraan sa pagpuksa ng sakit na dengue. Dumalo dito ang mga provincial, city at rural sanitary inspectors, municipal Dengue Point Person at Center for Health Development (CHD) Extension Office Staff. Ang pagsasanay na ginanap kamakailan ay naglalayong maibaba ang kaso ng sakit na dengue sa lalawigan o tuluyang masugpo ito sa pamamagitan ng mga istratehiya na masusing pinag-aralan ng PHO. Isa dito ay ang pagtukoy, pagkilala at pagsugpo ng lugar na pinamumugaran ng lamok na may dalang sakit na dengue lalo na‟t nagsimula na ang panahon ng tagulan. Ayon Arnold Flores, program coordinator on Dengue ng PHO, ginawa nila ang pagsasanay sa pagpapalakas ng Vector Surveillance o pagroronda sa mga lugar na pinangingitlugan ng lamok dahil isa ito sa importanteng bahagi sa pagkontrol ng mga sakit dala ng lamok. Tulad ng ibang sakit na wala pang bakuna o gamot panglunas dito at ang tanging pamamaraan lamang upang maiwasan ito ay ang pagkontrol sa paglaganap ng pinamumugaran ng lamok na sanhi ng dengue. Ikinukonsidera itong isang pinaka-

importanteng istratehiya sa pagsugpo ng sakit na dengue at ang pag-iwas ng pagkalat nito lalo na sa panahon ng tag-ulan. Ipinaliwanag din ni Flores na kailangan ang ibayong pamamaraan tulad ng Integrated Vector Management (IVM), o ang makatwirang paggamit ng mga resources para sa mas epektibong pagsugpo ng vector (dengue). Batay din ito sa pahayag ng World Health Organization (WHO) noong 2008 na sa pamamagitan ng IVM ay mapapabilis ang pagkontrol sa mga vector-borne diseases, o mga sakit na dala ng lamok. Nakasaad sa Global Strategic Plan ng IVM ang agarang pangangailangan para sa paggawa o pagkilos, habang ang Global Action Plan ng IVM ay nagpanukala ng malawakang pagsulong at pag-
unlad ng pagsasanay patungkol sa IVM. Itinuro naman ni Dr. Ferdinand Salazar ng Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) ang pagkilala ng mga Dengue Vector. Si Allan Larracas ng CHD ang tumalakay sa Vector Bionomics at Review on the Existing Guidelines on Actual Conduct of Vector Surveillance and Materials Needed at si Dr. Efren M. Dimaano ng San Lazaro Hospital ang nagbigay ng presentation plan.
