The circumferential coastal roads of Marinduque are cemented and well maintained, making going around the island pleasurable. The public transport consists mainly of jeepneys and tricycles but air-conditioned vans are available for hire. Being a net producer of agricultural products, the prices of food in Marinduque is lower compared to the Luzon Poctoy White Beach (Torrijos) mainland. Cows, goats and chicken in considerable quantity can be seen in the fields all over the island. The wet markets (GASAN) are full of sea food in their freshest state. Marinduque has plenty to offer tourists. The white sands of Poctoy Beach, Elephant and Maniwaya Islands are comparable to other white beaches in the country. The sulfuric water of Buenavista’sMalbog hot springs is reputed to have medicinal properties. The Bathala Cave complex is a sight to behold after one overcomes the small entrance. Several water- Bathala Cave (Sta.Cruz) falls also dot the island. Marinduque also boasts of many dive sites. Natangco Reefs in Mogpog and the Tres Reyes Islands are just two of the must see sites.

By Victoria Asuncion S. Mendoza PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan, Sept 28 (PIA) -- The municipality of Cuyo under Mayor Andrew Ong won this year’s Most Outstanding Local Government Unit (Category B) in the prestigious National Literacy Award given by the Literacy Coordinating Council (LCC). Cuyo’s implementation and support to innovative and unique projects under the Alternative Learning System (ALS) are making headway in promoting literacy and continuing education in its municipality. Jesus V. Pagliawan, provincial DepEd’s ALS coordinator, said that one of the unique projects that scored points in the competition is the “Layag” project, a floating and mobile learning center, which regularly goes to remote island barangays and sitios specifically those with no high schools. In cooperation with other offices, the Layag goes to these hard-toreach areas so that out-of-school youths (OSYs) and other marginalized sectors can access literacy programs through the ALS. Pagliawan said that the Layag also serves as a floating/mobile library. The project is a joint undertaking of the Cuyo municipal government and the provincial government of Palawan. Cuyo also implements and supports the E-escuela continuing education through the internet for the OSYs and sustains its instructional programs for them for more than two years now. The other winners in the Outstanding Local Government Unit (Class B) were 2nd place - Bato, Catanduanes under Mayor Eulogio R. Rodriguez; 3rd place -Laoac, Pangasinan under Mayor Silverio Alarcio Jr; 4th place-Braulio Dujali, Davao del Norte under Mayor Lolita Moral; and, 5th place-Garcia-Hernandez, Bohol under Mayor Miguelito B. Galendez. (VSM/ TBO-PIA 4B, Palawan)

By Voltaire Dequina SAN JOSE, Occidental Mindoro, (PIA) -- The province exhibited indigenous products during the Market Week, a five-day trade fair organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in SM Megamall in Mandaluyong. The trade fair, which started September 19, is one of the department's support projects to the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME), assisting them from production to marketing their products. A total of 414 MSME exhibitors from all over the country joined the trade fair. The department's initial plan was to have an expo of One Town One Product (OTOP), but due to the appeal of non-OTOP products, DTI came up with the Market Week, DTI-Mimaropa Regional Director Joel Valera said. The trade fair invited exhibitors that showcased food, home decors, and fashionable items. The trade fair was already a success on its first three days with a total income of P33 million, combined from all the participants. Mimaropa exhibitors got P600,000 while Occidental Mindoro earned P200,000. Valera added that the success of Occidental Mindoro exhibitors can be attributed to the efforts of the different agencies like DTI and DOLE and the provincial government headed by Governor Josephine Sato for her unwavering support and readily providing financial help for cooperatives and other institutions. DTI officer-in-charge Fe Banayat said the province had three booths in the trade fair. The first booth displayed wood carvings made by Ligad Visual Arts and Crafts. The second booth had beautifully crafted flowers, dolls, and bags made up of corn husks created by Occidental Mindoro Agri-Buhay Association Incorporated (OMABAI), while the last booth showcased a variety of products from the different municipalities of the province. The town of Paluan brought pastillas to the fair; Barangay Malawaan of Rizal showcased tuyo or dried fish; the municipality of Lubang presented skillfully designed big baskets, garlic, and pastillas; Calintaan had processed dried fish while Sablayan presented the beautiful spots in their town. This town had three participants in the fair Mary’s Delicacies specializing in bangus like tinapang bangus, bangus na siomai, and boneless bangus. Nica Food Products had cashew nuts, peanuts, spicy and sweetened tamarind. Rich Blitz showcased mouthwatering cheese cakes. The department is expecting to surpass its target gross income of P50 million. (LBR/VND-PIA4B, Occi-

Lyn Angeles is back! It was a pleasant surprise to see Adeline “Lyn” Angeles, former provincial board member from Mogpog, during the luncheon hosted by Cong. Lord Allan Velasco. Lyn is that feisty lady who has not been with local politics for some nine years now after deciding to take up challenges in another field, believing that “there’s life after politics”. Lyn was always in the middle of local environmental issues then during her stint as Bokal, and feels strongly now that she could contribute a lot more to the new directions being taken by a new breed of leaders to truly achieve what's close to her heart - environmental protection in the islandprovince of Marinduque./Eli Obligacion

Senator Loren Legarda stressed the vital role of the business community in making the country’s laws work during the 38th Philippine Business Conference at the Manila Hotel. Legarda, Chair of the Senate Committees on Climate Change, Foreign Relations, and Cultural Communities, was invited as speaker for the plenary session on Charting the Legislative Agenda for Economic Transformation: Prospects for the 2013 Mid-Term Elections. “With the mid-term elections on our horizon, it is time to revisit our desired ends and the means by which aspired outcomes can be achieved. The business sector is a vital partner of the government in carrying out the needed programs and reforms for a progressive nation,” she stressed. The Senator was particular in enjoining the business sector in contributing to the effective implementation of the country’s laws that are related to disasterresiliency, such as the Climate Change Act, the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act, and People’s Survival Fund Law. “As disaster risk reduction is everybody’s business, I urge heightened action from the business community. Private companies should be encouraged to come up with their business continuity plans (BCP) that will showcase how prepared they are to face disasters and be back in business as soon as possible,” Legarda said.

She noted that BCPs are already being undertaken in Japan that is why recovery has been fast and efficient. The business community in the Philippines must begin to think about this. “The higher value of corporate business is not found in the monetary profit it brings neither in the wealth it creates, but in the nobility of purpose—to improve the quality of life of the people and to build a sustainable and resilient human society.” “The road promises to be filled with stumbling blocks. But instead of slowing us down, these challenges should bring about consensus — an agreement that our country should double, even triple, its efforts to reach our targets,” Legarda concluded.
