WILTON MANORS CANDIDATES CAMPAIGN TO KEEP LIFE BETTER
// John McDonald
Wilton Manors prides itself on life being better here and three commission candidates are campaigning to ensure that’s the case.
The top two vote getters will take their position on the commission. All three candidates are gay men.
Vice Mayor Paul Rolli is the lone incumbent. First elected in 2018, Rolli, 71, is a retired top level federal government executive who directed overseas operations at the IRS.
“I am seeking a second term as city commissioner to ensure the initiatives in process are brought to fruition and to keep the momentum of the commission moving forward,” Rolli said. “This commission accomplished so much because it is a focused and cohesive team.”
Rolli faces newcomers Don D’Arminio and Roy David Walker. Commissioners serve four-year terms and earn a $25,000 annual salary.
D’Arminio, 60, is an accounting and tax professional who has served for the last six years on the city’s planning and zoning board. He moved to Wilton Manors 14 years ago from the east coast.
“I immediately felt a connection, a sense of belonging … an instant affinity with the
Island City. The people were [and still are] very friendly, genuine and welcoming.”
Walker, a park naturalist for Broward County, brings knowledge and experience in environmental and sustainability projects along with a millennial’s perspective. If elected, Walker, 37, would be the youngest member of the commission.
“Public service is very important to me and having lived in Wilton Manors for over 12 years, I decided the best way to improve the city and help the community is to be part of the process,” said Walker, who received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award from former president Barack Obama in 2015.
Keeping the city budget sustainable and improving water and sewer infrastructure are top issues for all candidates. By working as a team, Rolli said the commission has many accomplishments worth nothing, including managing the COVID-19 crisis without dipping into reserve funds.
“The city commission adopted a five-year strategic plan with six key areas; approved a 25 to 30-year water/sewer infrastructure plan; completed over $3 million in water/ sewer improvements; updated development regulations to attract new residents and businesses and increase tax revenue, initiated a rewrite of the city’s outdated code
of ordinances; awarded over $4.4 million in surtax funds for city-wide transportationrelated projects; approved a state agreement to receive about $6.4 million from the American Rescue Plan Act and many others,” Rolli said.
D’Arminio touts his ability to get things done as well as his involvement in several community organizations and charities.
“This community engagement opportunity allowed me to be able to ‘pay it forward’ while also applying my extensive career/professional/life experiences to be of even greater service to this unique city of which I so proudly call home,” D’Arminio said.
Maintaining Wilton Manors’ small town vibe is frequently mentioned by all candidates. With housing costs on the rise, Walker is proposing new developments carve out a portion of their plans for low income and elderly residents.
“Although this may not be the silver bullet for affordable housing, it is a first step in addressing the issue,” Walker said.
Election day is Nov. 8. Early voting begins Oct. 24 and runs through Nov. 6. The Woman’s Club of Wilton Manors, 600 N.E. 21st Court, is the city’s early voting site. The last day for voters to request a vote-by-mail ballot is Oct. 29.

PRE-WEDDING PLANNING: TO MARRY OR NOT TO MARRY?
PRENUPTIAL AND POSTNUPTIAL AGREEMENTS
Most of us believe it won’t be us - but, statistics say approximately half of marriages end in divorce. In the absence of a legally binding pre-nuptial agreement, should your marriage end in divorce, your assets (real property, personal property, bank accounts, brokerage accounts, and retirement savings accounts) may be subject to being divided between you and your ex by Florida’s rule of equitable distribution. In order to avoid that potentially devastating outcome, many couples agree in writing to give up all or most of the rights to the other’s separately acquired assets, retirement plans, and assets earned during the marriage. The agreement can be entered into either before the wedding - a “pre-nuptial” agreement, or after the wedding - “post-nuptial” - but, should comply with some basic rules that ensure it won’t be overturned in a nasty divorce. For example, both parties should be represented by an attorney so that neither can assert that she didn’t realize the legal implications of signing the document, that the document wasn’t presented on the “eve” of the wedding, avoiding the argument that it was presented at the last minute and that it was signed under the pressure of the imminent nuptials.
Pre-nuptial Agreements are regarded by many as a very unromantic proposal to make upon the acceptance of the marriage proposal. However, the effect of entering into the agreement in advance of a possible divorce, is that your behavior when you are at your worst, that is, at the divorce settlement table, will be governed by your agreements made when you were feeling sane, in love and respectful of your spouse to be. Marriage shouldn’t be encumbered by a coerced financial liability to your spouse, but, should be a consensual union based upon mutual love and respect. That being said, the decision to create a “pre-nupt” should be jointly reached and not coerced and negotiated with love and mutual regard. For example, if you intend to be the working spouse and your betrothed the stay-at-home parent, then, your agreement should include provisions assuring that your partner who is forgoing advancing his or her career, etc., be compensated for his “sacrifice” to your joint marital plan.
As for planning for disability and death, essential documents are still needed. First, a will and or a revocable living trust to ensure that your assets are managed according to your wishes upon your death. Marriage provides some inheritance rights, but, does not ensure that your spouse will inherit as you both might imagine. To assure that your
wishes be carried out in the event of disability, a Durable Power of Attorney (for finances), a Living Will, a Designation of Healthcare Surrogate, and a Preneed Guardian Designation, may be prepared.
DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIP
Domestic Partnership is a subject close to my heart: I worked on the Los Angeles County Domestic Partnership legislation with Tom Coleman in the 1980s and, with his blessings, I imported it to Broward County in 1997. The rise of the importance of domestic partnership as a status for unmarried committed couples reflects the sea change in the way people live and configure their families in the United States. In the fifties, 78% of households in the US were headed by married couples. Now more than 50% of all households in the US are headed by unmarried people. 42% of the workforce is unmarried. Across the US we have seen a trend towards inclusive domestic partnership benefit packages provided by employers, that is, gender-neutral, encompassing both gay and straight domestic partnerships. To say that “you must marry” in order to obtain equal treatment at work, including pay, family leave, insurance, taxation, is just wrong. I think the current debate over the demise of domestic

LGBT COMMUNITY RALLIES FOR CHARLIE CRIST
With state-sanctioned hate spewing from every corner of the Republican-controlled legislature and Gov. Ron DeSantis, Florida’s LGBT community is looking to send as many allies as it can to Tallahassee.
// John Hayden
Photo via Charlie Crist/Facebook.
One of them is Charlie Crist.
The former governor and congressman came to Equality Florida’s Wilton Manors headquarters on Sept. 14 to accept the endorsements from a coalition of LGBTsupporting PACs. The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) PAC, Equality Florida Action PAC, SAVE Action PAC, and the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus all officially embraced the man trying to unseat DeSantis in the November election.
“I’m honored to be here. I can’t tell you how pleased this makes me,” Crist told supporters who packed the office.
He quickly focused the group on priority
number one: defeating the incumbent governor.
“Ron DeSantis is a nightmare. You all know that. Florida knows that. Folks here today are leaders of our community, state, and nation who have been on the frontlines in our fight for equality for years.”
Afterward, SFGN asked how he planned to leverage these endorsements to maximize voter turnout. His answer was very vague.
“We’ll advertise, go door-to-door, do everything we can everywhere.”
After several weeks, the campaign is going back on television with ads. Usually that hurts a candidate, but he said he’s seen the gap close in that time and attributes it to people realizing they don’t like DeSantis.
NOT THE FIRST CHOICE
Crist was governor as a Republican from 2007-2011 then a congressman
from a Tampa/St. Petersburg district as a Democrat from 2017-2022 (he resigned his seat last month to focus on his campaign). If he is to win the election, he has to overcome voter apathy and distrust. Incredibly low turnout in the primary could be an indicator of a lack of enthusiasm. Also, some say switching parties is more political opportunism than a change of values.
At their meeting in July, Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus voters were strongly in favor of Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Nikki Fried being the nominee by a nearly 2-1 margin. Now their president, Stephen Gaskill, said it’s all water under the bridge.
“I think regardless of who won that primary, we would be organized and mobilize behind them. The party has chosen and we’re all uniting around Charlie Crist.”
Early voting runs Monday, October 24-Sunday, November 6, with regular voting on Tuesday, November 8.

JARED MOSKOWITZ
Jared Moskowitz is a lifelong public servant who will be our strong advocate in Congress. As a Broward County Commissioner, Florida’s Director of Emergency Management, a Democratic State Representative, and a City Commissioner, he has always fought to defend our rights and push for reforms that help South Florida families.
Our rights and freedoms are under attack, and we need strong leaders in Washington who will fight back against attempts to roll back our progress. The LGBTQ+ community, women, and people of color are all being targeted, and Jared will work to protect impacted communities. As a top priority, he will work to codify marriage equality and abortion access into federal law, ensuring that the Supreme Court cannot tear down these essential rights.
After the Pulse nightclub shooting, Jared pushed for a special session to pass gun reforms and create a memorial in support of the Orlando LGBTQ+ community. Unfortunately, too many politicians in Tallahassee fought against this effort. In the aftermath of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting, Jared worked to pass the most comprehensive gun violence prevention, mental health, and school safety bill ever passed in Florida. This bill also ensured that a memorial would be built for Pulse, accomplishing this important goal after years of commitment. The MSD Public Safety Act was used as a model for federal legislation, and Jared will continue to expand gun violence prevention laws to keep our community safe.
While he oversaw Florida’s testing and vaccination sites during the early stages of the pandemic, Jared made sure to prioritize access for communities that might be especially susceptible to COVID-19. That’s why he partnered with the AIDS Foundation to help at-risk people get vaccinated.
Jared Moskowitz has the expertise and experience necessary to be a powerful advocate for our community in Congress.

TANIA MARIA WILLIAMS
Tania Maria Williams has sat on both sides of the courtroom as a lawyer and the 11-year-old daughter of a defendant. Those two perspectives shaped her into the trial lawyer and person she is today.
Tania’s childhood experiences instilled a deep desire in her to ensure fairness in every interaction she has both inside and outside the courtroom. She carried that mantle of fairness into her 20-year legal career including her 4 years as a prosecutor and 4 years as a school board hearing officer.
Tania is running for judge so that every person, no matter race, creed, color, sexual orientation, gender identification or any other characteristic, will be treated fairly, equitably and with compassion. She believes that she has the right experience to be the right judge for all of Broward County.
JACQUELYN
Everything I have done up to now in service of the city and my neighborhood has prepared me for a seat on the City Commission. In the more than 50 years I have lived here, I have watched it transform from a sleepy small town — reliant on tourist dollars and spring break revenue — to a world-class city. I have not just watched from the sidelines, but have rolled up my sleeves and volunteered to help make it happen.
My experience and knowledge of how the city functions gives me a decisive edge in this race because I won’t need to be trained on the job. My service began at the neighborhood level in Colee Hammock, where I formed the HOA to fight rezoning and traffic issues detrimental to our residents. I served as President of the Council of Civic Associations, was a founding board member of the HAC on 7th Avenue, and a founding member of the Broward County Sexual Assault & Treatment Center. Most recently, I served as Chairperson of the City’s Planning and Zoning Board, Vice Chair of the Noise Committee and member of the Infrastructure Task Force.
The City of Fort Lauderdale has so many worthy goals and initiatives already in process. We need someone from District 4 who can come in with a running start and lead from Day 1. My priorities include ensuring public safety, preserving our waterways, protecting our neighborhoods’ unique character and maintaining our city’s stormwater and sewage infrastructure. I am running because I am passionate, dedicated and invested — and I am well prepared for this next big step to lead.

WILTON MANORS MAYOR’S RACE PRESENTS STARK CONTRAST FROM FAMILIAR FACES
T
he mayor’s race in Wilton
Manors is a stark contrast of platforms from familiar faces.
This is Mayor Scott Newton’s second administration as mayor, having held the position from 2004 to 2008. Born and raised in the Island City, Newton, 65, won a hard-fought three-way race for mayor in 2020 and is seeking re-election on a pitch of leading a cohesive commission towards long-term goals.
“The decision to run for mayor is to continue the work our commission and I, along with the city manager, have done to move our city into the future,” Newton said. “To have financial stability. To update our current parks and to complete our infrastructure.”
Newton faces challenger Boyd Corbin, 54, who is making his fourth run for mayor. An outspoken critic of both Wilton Manors and Fort Lauderdale governance, Corbin’s focus flows from the tap.
“Annual city spending has increased by several million dollars over the past few years and our water bills are being padded to pay for it,” Corbin said. “The city commission has always said there is nothing we can do about our green/yellow/ tan city drinking water since we buy it from
Fort Lauderdale. I disagree and I’ve been working on the quality of our tap water for the past four years. I’ve been talking about our outrageous water bills for eight years.”
Corbin is quick to pull out his phone to record incidents of sewer line breaks, which have plagued the city in recent years. He’s calling for lift station repairs and sleeving of the sewer lines.
Newton doesn’t deny Wilton Manors’ aging infrastructure is in need of upgrades. He declined to lay blame on one department.
“We have had big challenges in the last few years with COVID that hurt some departments, but we are getting back to fully staffed and back on track,” Newton said.
Wilton Manors Commissioners recently voted to increase the mayor’s salary from $11,500 to $30,000 annually. Both candidates are businessmen with Newton owning an upholstery shop and Corbin operating a vacation rental.
The lone straight man and parent on an all-gay male commission, Newton said he loves to see diverse businesses come
to Wilton Manors. Having a component of affordable housing in projects for the working class is needed, Newton said.
“There is interest from developers to bring in different projects that could include workforce housing,” Newton said.
Corbin said he is taking a free market approach to commerce with one exception.
“The blood plasma center on Andrews Ave. attracts drug addicts who sell their blood,” Corbin said. “We don’t need businesses like that if we can help it.”
A little more than 7,000 Wilton Manors residents cast votes in the 2020 mayoral election. Newton defeated former commissioner Julie Carson by 116 votes (3,161 to 3,045) with celebrity chef Josie Smith-Malave taking 873 votes. A count by the U.S. Census Bureau that same year showed the city to have a population of 11,426.

Mark Napier is a self-described ‘real’ Independent LGBTQ+ Congressional Candidate for Florida District 23. Originally from Kentucky, Napier has lived in Florida since 2005. As a ‘real’ Independent, Napier does not move to the Left, nor to the Right, instead...”I move forward turning weaknesses into opportunities for success.”
Napier’s campaign seeks to provide a voice for the ‘Discarded and Forgotten’ of the middle to low-income, impoverished, and homeless, while still working with the Visionaries (Business Leaders). Napier was left chronically homeless for 5 years in 2009 after he previously reporting a Child Pornography incident that bruised egos of senior Central Intelligence Agency officials who mishandled the investigation. In 2015, with perseverance and fortitude Napier pulled himself off the streets and now seeks office. “I want to truly represent the people of SOFLO.”
Napier devoted 20 years to the CIA and 26 years--two mobilizations--to the US Army Reserves and National Guards. Napier’s experiences span a variety of fields to include serving as the CIA Deputy Chief of Base at Bagram Airbase, Afghanistan for 17 months and conducting Counterterrorism Operations along the Afghan-Pak border for two plus years. Napier holds a Master of Science degree in International Management and is a graduate of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.
Napier’s experiences span the areas of Counterterrorism, Export Controls of Weapons of Mass Destruction, Defense Industry Analysis, Risk/Threat Assessment & Management, Contingency Operations-Planning & Exercises, and Middle East Peace (particularly Israel). My military experiences focused mainly on Intelligence.
Napier’s website: NAPIERforCongress2022.org is comprehensive and transparent on policy issues Napier would pursue. “My vision for SOFLO is to build a consistent year-round economic prosperity for all in the industries, goods, and services, while providing a ‘Hand-up Approach’ for the misfortunate. My ‘Focus’ will be on Inflation, the Economy, National Security and School Safety.”

This was the catalyst that led to her community involvement.

CHARLIE CRIST
As Florida’s 44th Governor from 2007 to 2011, Charlie Crist led Florida through the Great Recession and the Deepwater Horizon Gulf oil spill, always keeping his word to fight for the people. He helped lower the cost of doing business and living in Florida, increase transparency in government, strengthen Florida’s economy and ensure the safety and world-class education of Florida’s children. • He prevented massive teacher layoffs during the recession, working with the Obama Administration to use federal stimulus funding to save 20,000 teachers’ jobs. • He stopped radical attacks on women’s rights, vetoing laws to restrict a woman’s right to choose. • He led efforts to protect civil rights, acting to automatically restore voting rights of non-violent ex-felons and to extend voting hours across the state for all Floridians. • A staunch environmental advocate, he secured a landmark land acquisition to preserve the Florida Everglades and fought to hold BP accountable after the 2010 oil spill that ravaged Florida’s coastline. • He lowered property insurance rates by 10% by doing what is right for the people and holding the insurance companies accountable. • Today, as the Congressman from Florida’s 13th District, Charlie Crist fights to create opportunities so every Floridian can thrive. In 2016, Charlie flipped a Republican seat and won election to Congress. Since then, he has built a record of working across the aisle to make meaningful change for Florida families. President Trump signed his Veteran Treatment Court Coordination Act into law to get veterans the help they need instead of jail time. He also established the Spam Calls Task Force, to get every agency of government working together to fight the scourge of spam calls. • And alongside President Biden, Charlie supported the once-in-a-generation Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, while leading the fight for affordable flood insurance, more solar energy, and a permanent ban on drilling off Florida’s coasts. And with the American Rescue Plan, Crist helped deliver billions of dollars to the State of Florida to stabilize the budget, preventing devastating cuts and tax hikes.
PAUL ROLLI
I am running for re-election as city commissioner to ensure the initiatives in process are completed and to continue the current forward momentum. We accomplished so much because we are a focused and cohesive team. I will continue to focus on: ensuring long-term financial sustainability, implementing the repair-replacement program of water/sewer infrastructure, ensuring timely delivery of the other strategic plan initiatives including: efficient and high performing government; sea level rise and climate change issues; traffic and transportation issues; creating an investment climate to attract tourism, residential & commercial development, including a boutique hotel; keeping our city safe, preserve neighborhoods & protect our quality of life and including bringing more art into the city.
Some major accomplishments: adopting a five-year Strategic Plan with six key areas; approving a 25-30 yr. water/sewer infrastructure plan; completion of over $3 million in water/ sewer improvements; updating development regulations to attract new residents and businesses and increase tax revenue; initiating a rewrite of the City’s outdated Code of Ordinances; being awarded over $4.4 million in surtax funds for city-wide transportation-related projects; approved by the State to receive about $6.4 million from the American Rescue Plan Act and many others. The City managed the covid crisis without having to use reserve funds. I recommended the commission consider term limits for elected officials and that issue is on the November ballot for their decision by voters.
I have lived in Wilton Manors for 16 years with my husband and we like it here more and more every day because of the friendly community and caring people. I retired as a top-level executive from the Federal Government where I learned to lead and think strategically. As the head of a large organizational component, I was responsible for policy, budget, and utilization of resources. Coupled with my other work with community nonprofits and my proven track record as a city commissioner/vice mayor I am well qualified to continue leading the city.

KEVIN COCHRANE
Kevin Cochrane is a community advocate with an immense passion for the City of Fort Lauderdale. After graduating from Stanford University, Kevin founded his first company, Interwoven, when he was 24 and took it public 3 years later. The company helped organizations build their first Internet, intranet, and eCommerce websites. Kevin also ran product and marketing at public Swiss software company Day Software, where he built it into a global Internet powerhouse, sold it to Adobe Systems, and created the Adobe Marketing Cloud.
Since making Fort Lauderdale his home, Kevin has been a passionate advocate for our city. He organized a group of individuals concerned about bad public policy to advocate for better solutions for our infrastructure, our waterways, and our neighborhoods. In 2020, Kevin led the effort to secure over 15,000 signatures on a petition to address the challenges Fort Lauderdale faces with overdevelopment. His efforts to raise public awareness, education, and advocacy to make water and infrastructure #1 priorities for our Mayor and City Commission.
Kevin is also a marathon runner who is active in Fort Lauderdale’s running scene. An active member of Fort Lauderdale’s very own Front Runners and Walkers, Kevin can be seen running around town from our local LGBTQ running group weekly. In addition, in 2018, Kevin ran 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days, and in 2019, he did a solo run from Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco along US Highway 1. This year, aside from running for office, Kevin will be running the Big Six Marathons –after Boston in April, his next races include Berlin, London, Chicago, New York, and Tokyo.
WATER
Our canals, rivers, and beaches are the lifeblood of our economy and what makes Fort Lauderdale the best place to live on the planet. Yet, we have allowed our waterways to be degraded. We need to protect and restore our waterways. Clear waters, teeming with life that is safe to swim in. Our waters should be the envy of the world.
INFRASTRUCTURE
We are rapidly growing our population. But we have not invested with the same speed and level of investment in the core infrastructure needed to support that growth. We saw the consequences of this in 2020 with the breaking of sewer and water pipes. The state mandate forced our city to invest, but it’s not enough - our pipes continue to break. We need to plan and build the infrastructure now to support the next 20 years of growth.
PUBLIC SAFETY/SERVICES
Similar to infrastructure, are we making adequate investments in our police force, our firefighters, our teachers, and other public services to support our population growth? We need growth to improve our quality of life. When we do not invest and grow the ranks of those that provide the essential services to ensure the public welfare, we conversely diminish our quality of life. I aim to change that.
HOUSING
We are seeing housing become ever more unaffordable. While growth should improve our quality of life, we’re instead seeing local workers priced out of living in Fort Lauderdale. Are we supporting our firefighters, police, teachers, and local workers with the right jobs, wages, and developments so that they can afford to live here? We’re growing. Let’s make sure that growth lifts up and support all members of our community.
HOMELESSNESS
Our community thrives only when the least amongst us thrive as well. We are seeing unprecedented population growthand sadly, including our rising homeless population. We need to make it a priority to better fund and end our homeless crisis. We can no longer turn a blind eye - including to proper funding and staffing of our police and firefighters who are on the front line day providing emergency care and services.

JOHN C.
GARY
Born in New York City, I graduated from Stuyvesant High School. Following my honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps, I earned a bachelor’s degree in Accountancy from Baruch College – City University of New York and later an MBA from the University of North Florida. Both degrees were completed at night while working full time. I also completed the Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program at Harvard University- John F. Kennedy School of Government
My private sector experience includes investment banking, Big 4 public accounting, the insurance industry, stockbroker, and entrepreneur. In the public sector, I worked as the Finance Director for the City of Neptune Beach and the City of Jacksonville. In 2006 I spearheaded the establishment of the City Auditor’s Office for Fort Lauderdale.
As your City Auditor for the last 16 years, I have been involved in every financial decision that the city has made. I’ve reviewed thousands of agenda items before the Commission voted on them. I analyzed every annual budget. And I advised the Commission on the financial viability of proposed public-private partnerships. Through three City Commissions, four City Managers and three City Attorneys, I have remained the steady guiding hand overseeing the integrity of the city’s financial, budgeting and procurement activities.
Finally, I have served on a variety of community organization board-level committees, including the Broward Performing Arts Center Authority, Broward County School Board, Broward County Housing Authority, Community Foundation of Broward County, and the Broward Housing Partnership.
Gary learned the lessons of hard work and perseverance from his parents. Gary’s father served in the Marines and met JoAnn upon his return from Korea. They married soon after, having two children, Gary and his sister Linda. JoAnn recognized her husband’s potential and urged him to return to school, where he graduated second in his class at FAU.
But Gary’s father had a desire to do even more- to go to law school and become a lawyer. The family relocated to Ohio, and his father attended University of Toledo College of Law. His father established a successful law practice and served as a distinguished jurist and as Chief Judge of Florida’s Fourth District Court of Appeal.
While Gary’s love and passion for the law were driven by his father and their shared experiences together, his commitment to public service and strong desire to serve the community was significantly driven by his mother JoAnn. After years in the workforce, and raising her family, she became a social worker and at the age of 60 earned a degree in Social Work.
As a lawyer, Gary, Jr. fought for the rights of his clients on a wide range of complex legal issues. His decision to run for the State Senate was based on his desire to pass laws to protect the rights of individuals and right to access of the courts. Gary’s decision to run for the Circuit Court is based on his lifelong commitment to the law and his desire to help people every day.
Senator Farmer has been an outspoken proponent of expanding and improving services for mental health and substance abuse treatment. He is strong supporter of the Broward Behavioral Health Coalition where he serves on the Board of Directors.

economic and healthcare policies for the people! I have the expertise and track record to move bold policies forward. My proven track record of political courage, job creation, building generational wealth, and bringing healthcare into the community speaks to my ability to deliver results.”
City Transit Authority in the Capital Programs & Environmental Sustainability division, managing over 2-million-dollar projects. In 1999, I launched my career with Trinity Health Care Services, Inc., leading to several promotions and achievements and being named Chief Executive Officer.
I’m not a politician. I’m a wife, mom, advocate, executive, and the Democratic nominee of Florida’s 20th Congressional District.
We can no longer ignore the sliding scale of our progress, rising unemployment rates, the soaring cost of living, inadequate access to quality health care, and lack of equitable opportunities.
It’s time to take a stand for District 20, and I’m asking you to stand with me for the future of our loved ones, our children, and the next generation.
Over 10 years ago, I began advocating in Washington D.C. on Capitol Hill to drive positive change in Health Care Reform. My success and expertise as a Chief Executive Officer of a healthcare company opened many doors, including sitting down with many members of the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate.
With every door that opened, I took each opportunity to advocate for children with disabilities, healthcare expansion, and economic development.
Over the years, my frustrations continued to grow. Finally, the unwillingness of some elected officials to move legislation that would address the community’s immediate needs led me to run for office. When people ask me why I’m running for Congress, my response is clear, “Our community has been suffering immensely from the lack of healthcare and economic opportunities. Now is the time to exercise political courage and put forth bold
In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, I led monumental efforts to meet the immediate needs of our district. Through our partnership with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Florida Department of Emergency Management (FDEM), my company vaccinated over 300,000 and employed over 1,000. While many businesses were shuttering and reducing employee hours, we were the largest black woman-led and owned company to participate in this federal and state initiative.
Over the years, I have consistently served my community through our non-profit and outreach programs. We provided over 100,000 masks to community members in partnership with the Florida Office of Minority Health and Equality. We provided over 4,000 hot meals to families in need through my Sunday Dinner Program. Most recently, I was recognized as Rising Star Awardee (2018); Miramar’s Progressive Woman of the Year (2019); and Community Voice of the Year (2020).
Small business will always be the heartbeat of our communities. I led an aggressive small business initiative assisting small businesses to acquire Payroll Protection Program grants, federal and state contracts, and investors. In order to provide capital for small businesses, we created a minority women’s investment group in which members invested over $1 million into small businesses.
I’ve served as the Chair of several Board of Directors and Advisory Boards and instituted transformational policies that increased transparency, profit, market share, diversity and acquisition of state and federal contracts.
I continue to serve our district diligently. Presently, I’ve been appointed to the Human Relations Committee, Advisory Board for Broward County Public Schools and Chair of the Advisory Board for the McCormick Law Firm Essential Community Health and Haitian Chamber of Commerce.
Before joining Trinity Health Care Services, I worked as a project manager for New York
My family is my proudest achievement. Before joining forces with my husband, I was a single mother for twelve years. Like so many women, I raised my daughter alone while completing coursework working towards a Master’s in Business Administration, and putting myself through law school with navigating my daughter’s learning disability. I was told that my daughter would never attend a regular school. Out-of-pocket medical expenses began to pile up. But together, we persisted in the face of adversity. Today, my amazing daughter is enrolled in honors prelaw, preparing to pursue a career in law.
I’m a proud graduate of ChaminadeMadonna College Preparatory, Howard University, and St. Thomas University School of Law. In addition, I completed extensive coursework toward an MBA from the University of Maryland University College.
As the proud daughter of immigrants I have experienced the American dream, but it has not been without hard work or hardships. As Americans, we all share this story of trials and triumphs. As citizens, it is our right to demand more, of our system and of our leaders. It is our right to pursue a more perfect union. It is accessible healthcare that creates opportunities for our people. Economic opportunities that keep our families together and our brightest at home in Florida.
I’ve invested 20 years into building healthcare for Americans who need it most and spent the last decade lobbying on Capitol Hill to drive positive change in Health Care Reform.
As your Congresswoman, I’ve delivered for the district by leading the fight to fix housing, tackle inflation, grow our local economy, and expand access to quality affordable healthcare. As a strong Democrat in Congress, I look forward to continue working with President Joe Biden, and our democratic leaders to build a better America. I humbly ask you to keep me in the fight by re-electing me on August 23rd.

CHIEF DEMINGS ASSIGNED TO RETIRE RUBIO
//John McDonald
Marco Rubio’s days as Florida’s senior
United States Senator could be numbered
40 | THE | OCTOBER - NOVEMBER 2022
Democrats have enlisted Congresswoman Val Demings to retire Rubio, famously branded “Little Marco” by ex-president Donald Trump.
It’s the top of the 2022 ticket and a race Democrats feel carries the strongest chance of earning an elusive statewide victory. Demings, former Orlando Police Chief, has raised more than $47 million, the third most of any Senate campaign.
“Val Demings will beat Marco Rubio to be our next U.S. Senator,” said Stephen Gaskill, president of the Florida LGBTQ Democratic Caucus. “She is running a statewide grassroots campaign focused on reaching out to everyone in Florida, unlike Rubio, who stays in comfortable MAGA echo chambers. She has outraised him in every quarter and best represents the changing and dynamic demographics of Florida.”
A Florida native, Demings, 65, was first elected to Congress in 2016. She represents Congressional District 10, an Orlando area seat that includes the Walt Disney World theme parks and resorts.
“I’m running for the United States Senate because of two simple words: Never Tire,” Demings said in a campaign video that includes photographs and video of her childhood growing up in Jacksonville and tenure at the Orlando PD.
The video also portrays Rubio as a lazy politician with “tired talking points and backwards solutions.”
“Voters know Rubio is uninterested in his Senate position and is only holding on to run for President again,” Gaskill said. “He has no track record in the Senate and barely even shows up to work. Chief Demings will lead a strong Democratic
FUN
ticket in November.”
Rubio has never been an ally to the LGBT community. He recently said voting to codify same-sex marriage in the Senate was a “stupid waste of time.” Speaking to clergy at a campaign event in Davie, Rubio said mainstream Christianity teaches “the only relations that God recognizes and tolerates as not sinful are a husband and a wife.”
“Nowhere in scripture does it speak to that,” said Rev. Tony Viglione of Church of Our Savior MCC in Boynton Beach. “I have yet to find any scripture – Old or New – to support any law against love.”
Viglione said Rubio is deploying a thinly-veiled strategy of drumming up support among older, white evangelical voters as the election nears.
“I understand what he’s doing,” Viglione said. “He’s speaking to his class of citizenry – middle-aged white men. He’s talking in evangelical terms. My God is and always will be a God of love. No one person or religious body can claim with authority to know the heart of God and then dismiss God’s love and acceptance of God’s children as equal.”
Demings wasted no time in condemning Rubio’s remarks.
“Shame on Marco Rubio for attacking our LGBTQ community,” Demings tweeted. “In the Senate, I will continue fighting to protect freedoms for ALL Floridians.”
In July, Demings voted for the Respect For Marriage Act, a piece of legislation intended to safeguard the right of samesex and interracial couples to marry in the event the Supreme Court were to overturn such rights as it did with abortion.
“VOTERS KNOW RUBIO IS UNINTERESTED IN HIS SENATE POSITION AND IS ONLY HOLDING ON TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT AGAIN.”
- Stephen Gaskill
PRESIDENT OF THE FLORIDA LGBTQ DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS
“I voted to protect marriage equality,” Demings tweeted. “There are some politicians who are trying to tear down this basic freedom – even interracial marriage. That’s shocking, that’s extreme. I’m fighting to protect marriage equality.”
The Senate is the upper chamber of Congress with each state allotted two seats. Senators are elected to six-year terms. Presently, there are 50 Republicans, 48 Democrats and two Independents. Both of Florida’s Senators – Rubio and Rick Scott – are Republicans.

Most Popular LGBT DestinationsWedding
by Rick Karlin
Inthe little more than a decade since same-sex marriage became legal in the U.S., destination weddings for gay and lesbian couples have become a billion-dollar business. Still, you must choose your destination wisely; you won’t find a lot of options in the Middle East or much of Asia. In South America, some countries have adopted same-sex marriage laws, while in others it varies by locality. Even our neighbors to the south in the Caribbean have a patchwork of just a few places that allow us to marry.
If you’re planning a destination wedding, do your research, not only do you have to check into the legality of your ceremony, but several places (including some places in the U.S.) also have stringent rules for non-resident marriages. On the flip side, due to the considerable num ber of same-sex weddings taking place, many locations have local guides to lead you through the process.
LoveLove
Adding to the allure of a destination wedding for many is the fact that you will probably have a smaller wed ding party, which means a smaller budget. In many foreign countries, the exchange rate can also work in your favor, saving you even more. Hiring an ex perienced wedding planner in a foreign country is essential. They’ll know the best venues and suppli ers and steer you away from those that may not be as experienced or willing to work with a same-sex couple and will be able to save you money.
If you’re planning to jet away to say, “I do!” here are some of the most popular international destinations for same-sex weddings and plan ners working in the area with experience with LGBT weddings.

In ENGLAND, marriage equality has been around for al most 15 years. While most people think of London, you might also want to consider Manchester, one of the U.K.’s exciting gay hubs. Consider it the San Francisco of Britain, with its strong LGBT community, making it the perfect place to tie the knot. While Liverpool’s Century Pavilion has hosted numerous same-sex unions in the U.K (thecenturypavilion.co.uk).
In 2015, mostly Catholic IRELAND surprised the world by becoming the first nation to legalize same-sex mar riage by popular vote, rather than through legislation. Its beauti ful countryside and cosmopolitan capital, Dublin, are big draws. Daragh Doyle runs Rainbow Weddings, an event planning business that specializes in same-sex weddings (rainbowweddings.ie).
Vasiliki and his company, Luxury Weddings, can make your dreams of a wedding in the GREEK ISLES complete (luxury-wedding.gr). The team consists of experienced profession als, each one specializing in a different field, who have a common goal to turn your dream into a unique creation.
SWEDEN adopted a gender-neutral marriage law in 2009. In Stockholm, the venue choices include top ho tels, as well as smaller, quaint places. For a “Frozen” inspired wed ding, head up to the Arctic Circle for the famous IceHotel, where they have done numerous same-sex unions (icehotel.com).
AUSTRALIA passed same-sex marriage laws in 2017, and the legendary beauty and party atmospheres of Sydney and Melbourne have quickly made them favorite destinations for same-sex couples. For help planning an event anywhere on the con tinent, check out australiansamesexweddingdirectory.com.au
In 2010, ARGENTINA was the first Latin American coun try to pass marriage equality. Fabulous Weddings was one of the first wedding planners to actively recruit same-sex unions and has become one of the most popular in Argentina, especially for destination weddings. Laetitia Orsetti brings together event plan ning experience with expertise in the Argentine culture and legal system (fab-weddings.com).
FIJI and its lush vegetation were just made for weddings. The Pearl Resort & Spa features multiple ceremony and reception venues from which to choose. All packages (starting at $2,500 to $15,000 for a party of 50) include the services of a wed ding coordinator (thepearlsouthpacific.com).
Don’t overlook CANADA, our neighbor to the north. Now well into its second decade of marriage equality, Canada offers a variety of venues as vast and varied as the country itself, from chic and sophisticated Montreal to the laid-back vibe of Vancouver, there’s something for everyone. The same-sex wedding industry has had a long time to establish in Canada, so any decentsized city will offer its share of experienced wedding planners.
Or look to the south. While not all of Mexico allows samesex weddings (it varies from state to state, just as it did here in the U.S. for a few years), they are legal in JALISCO, home to PUERTO VALLARTA, the gayest city in Mexico, and now in the YUCATAN. Cozumel Dream Wedding has packages to fit every budget from a $250 elopement package to large wedding parties (cozumeldwm.com).
Leave it to FRANCE, the country that invented love and bureaucracy to take its time passing marriage equality (in 2013). Getting married anywhere in France is expensive, espe cially in Paris, but you might be able to save a few bucks picking a smaller city, perhaps even one on the Riviera, and what could be more romantic than that? For nationwide information, check out samesexweddingsinfrance.com
A leader among gay-friendly countries in the world, SPAIN was the third nation to institute marriage equality way back in 2005. From the Canary Islands to the dreamy Mediter ranean beaches and lush wine country, Spain offers numerous pos sibilities for a dream wedding. With years of experience in planning same-sex weddings,Lyndyloo in Spain (lyndylooinspain.com) and Sunshine Weddings (sunshineweddingsspain.com) have the con nections you’ll need.
THE NETHERLANDS led the world in establishing same-sex marriage when it legalized gay marriage in 2001 and Amsterdam is one of the world’s most romantic cities. Cloverjean specializes in same-sex ceremonies in the Netherlands (cloverjean.com).
One of the most popular places to hold a destination wedding may not be on land at all, but AT SEA . While you can’t legally marry on all cruise lines, it depends on where the ship is registered (for example Royal Caribbean is registered in the Bahamas, where same-sex marriage is not recognized), you can do so on all Celebrity Cruises (Celebrity’s fleet is registered in Malta, where marriage equality became law in October 2017). Two years ago, the cruise line announced that same-sex marriag es performed on its ships are legally recognized. The cruise line has ship captains as wedding officiants and onboard wedding coordinators.
Those are the top foreign destinations. Here in the U.S., HAWAII is always a popular wedding destination. Other popular locales include PROVINCETOWN, SAN FRANCISCO, NEW YORK, and SOUTH FLORIDA. If you’re planning a destination wedding in the U.S., check out EquallyWed.com for a list of venues, suppliers, and planners. Equally Wed also identifies women and mi nority-owned businesses. ODDS ON FAVORITE TO WIN COASTAL HOUSE SEAT M ost analysts agree, Broward County Commissioner Jared Moskowitz is the odds on favorite to win U.S. House District 23. // John McDonald Photo via Jared Moskowitz/Facebook.
Moskowitz is running for the seat being vacated by seven-term Congressman Ted Deutch. It’s a district that leans Democrat and includes coastal communities from Fort Lauderdale to Boca Raton – home to a large population of queer folks of all stripes.
So how will Moskowitz, a clean cut, heterosexual, married father of two boys, respond to the needs of his LGBT constituents?
Florida Senator Shevrin Jones, the state’s first Black gay senator, used a basketball analogy to describe that allyship.
“Jared is more than just my closest friend, he’s an accomplice to the LGBTQ community,” said Jones. “Not only will he walk the walk for us, but I know he will get in the paint with us, that’s just who he is, a hands on leader.”
The recent brouhaha over Florida’s Parental Rights in Education law – aka “Don’t Say Gay” – is case in point.
“The policy that came out singled out only the gay community,” Moskowitz said. “I think most parents would agree that we don’t want any kind of sexual conversation with our little children in school. Any kind. That is reserved for parents. But to single out only part of that conversation and say this is the part we don’t want, that is where the divisiveness comes into this issue that didn’t need to exist.”
Moskowitz, 41, has steadily climbed the ladder of public service, starting as a commissioner in his hometown of Parkland and then serving as a state representative in Tallahassee. In the aftermath of the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Moskowitz led gun violence reform efforts, enacting historic legislation that raised the age limit for firearm purchases from 18 to 21 and put in place red flag laws.
“He’ll be a force to be reckoned with on the gun issue,” said Jason King, a lobbyist, who managed Dean Trantalis’ winning 2018 campaign for Fort Lauderdale mayor. “We have to bring civility back to politics and
FUN
Jared is a guy who knows how to work across the aisle. He has the aptitude to deal with the gun issue and to work constructively with Republicans in Congress and we need more people in government like that.”
Moskowitz credits his late father for the ability to build coalitions. Michael Moskowitz, an influential Democratic party committeeman, died in January from pancreatic cancer.
“I grew up in a Democratic family and we only supported Democrats,” said Moskowitz. “At the same time, I remember my dad telling me, ‘You’re not going to just work with Democrats in life, Jared, you gotta work with people you disagree with and so long as you’re making progress and helping people in the community, you work with whoever you need to work with. You stay true to who you are, but don’t decide you are not going to work with 50% of the people because you don’t agree on 100% of the items.’”
And so with that philosophy in mind, Moskowitz went to work for Governor Ron DeSantis. When the COVID-19 crisis hit, DeSantis turned to Moskowitz to direct the state’s division of emergency management.
Dubbed the “Master of Disaster,” Moskowitz implemented pandemic programs, which included supplying masks and gowns to hospitals, setting up testing sites in tents and pharmacies and going into homes of the immunocompromised and Holocaust survivors to get vaccine shots into arms.
The rapid response, Moskowitz believes, avoided a prolonged shutdown that other states endured.
“Florida is experiencing a sort of renaissance,” Moskowitz said. “The demand to move to Florida is unprecedented and I think, quite frankly, that’s because of how we handled COVID. Compared to other states, people really liked what we did here.”
Florida has 27 congressional districts. In the 117th U.S. Congress, the Florida delegation includes 16 Republicans, 10 Democrats and one vacant seat. Overall, there are 435 seats in Congress with each state’s representation determined by population. There are 221 Democrats, 212 Republicans and two vacant seats.
