Afternoon drinks with the ladies of Kamloops Burlesque BY JULI HARLAND Photos by Juli Harland Each month on the Blue Grotto stage, a flurry of glitter, tassels, and storytelling through dance takes place. The Kamloops Burlesque team has been combining classic reveals and theatrics for over five years now, and thank heavens, showing no signs of stopping. The Mix: Kamloops had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with show producer, Miss Coco Creme, and her lovely cohort, Kara-Sheen Inferno, over drinks at Miss Coco’s back patio to talk about the empowering business of burlesque. The Kamloops Burlesque show was started back in January of 2011 by Vain Calamity Jane who wanted to perform a burlesque show before her 30th birthday. Since then the show has

evolved and grown from a mix of belly dancers, hula hoopers, magicians, escape artists, singers, comedians, and reveals to a more burlesque-heavy

focus. “Not through a desire of ours,” says Miss Coco, “or intent. I think everyone just started getting more comfortable in

getting naked.” Including Miss Coco herself. “I would say it was about halfway through the first year before I was comfortable getting naked,” she recalls. “When I first started out I was only belly dancing. And I was ‘No way, I’m too old for this. No one wants to see this naked.’ And then I got over myself. Wait a minute, people do want to see this naked. I would like to be naked. So it was a terrifying transition, but also a very freeing and empowering moment.” It’s that empowerment that brings many women to want to be a part of the burlesque team in Kamloops, in general. Including Kara-Sheen Inferno. “For me, it was the shitty relationship that I got out of and I was starting over again,” says KaraSheen. “It was like you had to figure out who you are outside of something else and when you discover that ‘It’s just going to be me,’ and then you don’t really know who ‘me’ is anymore. It’s like burlesque was this way of figuring

yourself out and learning who you are and getting back into contact with that part of you. “At first I was one of the people who wouldn’t show. I wore a bra in the performances for the longest time. And even just looking in the mirror in the classes, and I think that’s most women, we can’t even look at ourselves for too long. You walk past that reflective surface and glance at it and continue on. Whereas in the classes there is a giant mirror and you are saying, I am going to make my body look this certain way and enjoy this curve, and I am going to enjoy this curve. “If you want someone to enjoy this curve, then you have to enjoy this curve. If I want to say that my

stomach is beautiful and I appreciate it, I’m going to have to look in the mirror and say, my stomach is beautiful. And I appreciate it. And that’s a really hard barrier to get over.” And it’s a process, they say, that doesn’t end when you get on stage. “Even doing this for as long as I have,” says Miss Coco, “I still need to remind myself of that at times. I watch troops like The Lost Girls and go ‘Man they are all so fit and capable and look at them...’ But you know what? I bring other things. I love what I am capable of, and I love what I can put out there. I feel really powerful in myself right now, and that’s a continuous conversation. that’s where something like this is important.”

That is part of what makes Kamloops Burlesque as popular and fun as it has become. It’s not just another place to go for breasts and bums. It’s the confidence that these women have in themselves. They don’t meekly ask for adoration. They dare you to love them. And how could anyone give up on such a dare? And it’s not just women who share the stage at Kamloops Burlesque. There have been plenty of men who have been a part of the show. KaraSheen’s partner, The Big Buttowski, as well as a good handful of local and travelling performers, are regular fixtures on the local stage. “Like, when we had Beau Creep up,” Coco recalls. “I thought that was really wonderful for our male performers and our potential male performers to see somebody who can pull off being really aware of what they are putting on stage. To be able to get down to a full reveal and still really owning that presence, and being very male and be living within this feminine world. It was really great. I really appreciated that.” “He is so masculine when he comes out,” Kara-Sheen adds. “I’m going to be a lumberjack, this thing that women expect, that society says is sexy, and then he turns it on its head and makes it into this feminine energy coming out of a man, that was very appealing. It was so good.” Burlesque, say the women, is a perfect place to be able to explore

all aspects of self. The feminine, the masculine, vulnerabilities, and strengths. “It should make your audience question,” says Kara-Sheen. “It gives you questions about yourself, and what you view as sexy in your own sexuality and perhaps drops down some walls for people. And if you

can put something forth that they find sexy that is along those lines then they’re like, ‘Oh I kinda get it now.’ “One of the best compliments is people telling me that they got a really confused boner. That they have such a confused boner right now. Well maybe go home and think about that,” she

laughs. There are a couple of ways to get involved with the Kamloops Burlesque troupe. Auditions can happen though appointment, or people can sign up for Miss Coco’s burlesque classes to learn the ropes as you build friendships and fun. Check www.facebook. com/kamloopsburlesque

LOCAL HEROES

Who is your local hero? BY JULI HARLAND I wanted to create a space where we, as a community, could celebrate the people that help shape our lives. The unsung heroes. The everyday superheroes that create a space of sharing, of service, of love. Too often there is a focus on the wrongdoings of people that we lose focus on the notion that we are one. That there are those out there who bring back faith in humanity. That we are, in fact, a tribe of people who need people. I encourage you to send The Mix: Kamloops your own stories about the people who make a difference in your life. Be it your mother, your father, your partner, your friend, or that guy you met on the bus that one time when you were feeling down. I firmly believe that in celebrating the goodness in others, we encourage goodness. What we put out into the world is what we will receive. We look forward to hearing about the people who make your world a better place. For me, I have two very

dear, very amazing, and very loving heroes who I am fortunate enough to call my friends. These women have, literally, saved my life and allowed me to embrace my own confidence, my journey, and have become an irreplaceable part of my family. Marian Hartley and Muriel Keller are two of the most wonderful people I’ve ever known in my 40+ years. I met them first as landlords, and they became fast friends and confidants. I can’t count how many over-the-fence conversations we’ve had, how many times I’ve sat under their awning lamenting about life or sharing secrets, or how many times they’ve just ‘known’ when I needed encouragement. If I didn’t know better (and I’m not sure I do) I’d say these women were magic. When I was in the process of divorce and what seemed like insurmountable life changes, this pair were there to support and lift me up. When my daughter was moving to town they opened their hearts and their home so that we could

all be together. When I was feeling like there was no way I was going to be able to make it on my own as an older, underemployed, single parent again at this phase of life my ladies were there to support and encourage me, and remind me, through sharing of themselves, that there is nothing I can’t do. It’s because of these women, and their support, that you’re holding this paper in your hands today. I can’t even imagine where the last year and a half of my life would have

taken me if not for their selfless love. For that, and for countless other moments, words, actions, and kindness, I could not possibly live enough lifetimes to thank these women for the passion in life that they’ve been a part of restoring in me. But I’ll sure try. And it’s not just me. These women have such a network of sharing and love. Everywhere I go, I hear tales of how Mur and Mar have made amazing impacts on others’ lives though simply sharing of

themselves. That’s what makes these women heroes. Not because of any grand doing. Not because they changed the world or raised a billion dollars or were famous, but because they live their lives in love and compassion. And I, for one, aspire to do the same. Thank you, my ladies, Muriel and Marian. For all you are and all you do. You’re my heroes.

Reflections on a sun-kissed mourning BY LINDSAY CURRY You slip from tree to tree on the path of righteousness, eager to hide from plain sight as you travel. I predict that paradise will shrink from you like the tide recedes from the beach when the moon calls. On this lazy afternoon, the endless sky reflects your life, stretching out in all directions as you search for absolution. A trace of the past flickers by you, filled with debris from the floods of emotion that accompanied your fall from grace. You would rescue yourself from despair and doubt if only you thought that you were worthy. An artistic logician mends phrases that engulf you in their truth, even as you strive to deny their power. You will end here, struggling to make sense of what the prophets have said, leaving behind everything that has ever meant anything to you.

POP CULTURE

When the world makes your head ache BY TODD SULLIVAN The Hangover I have a headache. And you probably do too. It might not be an actual, literal headache, where you are in actual, literal pain, and you need to swallow a couple of Tylenol to make it through the day. More likely it’s a kind of existential headache. Not something that hurts you physically, but something that aches from inside the very core of your being. You can’t quite put your finger on it, but there’s a throbbing there anyway. This is something I call a cultural hangover, and it’s a direct result of being alive in the 21st century. There is so much madness swirling in the ether around you that it can’t help but seep into your brain and leave a stain there. And that’s assuming you don’t pay any attention to it. If you do give it your attention, well you’re

in for an even uglier ride. For example, on the night I am writing this column, apparently #mcchicken became a huge trending topic on Twitter. Weird, you’re probably thinking, right? I mean, it’s a tasty sandwich, no doubt about it, but probably not even on my top 3 of what I’ll order the next time I’m at McDonald’s (for the record, my go-to sandwich is the Quarter Pounder BLT. Don’t judge). But then, as I discovered that #mcchicken was trending, I saw that all of the references to it on the web were basically trying to convince people not to look up why #mcchicken was trending. And, well, as anyone who knows me will assert, as soon as you tell me not to do something, it’s a pretty good bet that’s going to be the next thing that I do. So I googled it. And… Okay, I feel like I need to put in some

#McChicken was recently trending on Twitter. You probably don’t want to know why.

kind of a warning here. Like, if you want to still feel good about humanity, for heaven’s sake turn back now. If you proceed, you have no one to blame but yourself, though I can totally relate to your unquenchable thirst for pop culture knowledge, even knowing that it might not be for the best. So, here’s what happened. Someone posted a video of himself enjoying a McChicken sandwich in a particularly intimate fashion. And yes, that means what it sounds like it means. And yes, it was a full XXX production. Weirdly, it took me more than just a few minutes to track the video down, which seems to work against what one suspects of the Internet, and maybe offers some small hope for humanity. More than anything, searches seem to bring up reaction gifs and memes, which give you some sense of the horror awaiting you if you actually manage to

find the video. Which, by the way, you really should not do. Speaking of poultry, let’s talk about Donald Trump, who seems to have been playing games of political chicken with both the voters and the Republican Party in the United States. Now I know here in Canada, we can’t do much about the election except watch it in some confused state of disgust and awe combined, but I am concerned about how the election will turn out, as I consider Canada to be in the ‘collateral damage zone’ of a Trump presidency. Thankfully, Trump’s campaign has been taking a turn for the worse over the last few weeks, thanks almost entirely to Trump’s own actions. Whenever it seems like he can’t possibly say anything more terrible than he has before, Trump has a tendency to look you square in the eye, double-down, and do exactly that. Donald Trump is pretty much

the human version of the honey badger. But what worked for him during the primaries, seems to be taking a toll on him now. Polls have shown that Hillary has an ever-widening lead, and a shakeup on the Trump campaign might very well mean that the background players are wanting Trump to be a little more political and a little bit less hysterical. Here’s hoping the movement doesn’t succeed, not because Trump would be less entertaining (he would be), but because it would mean an increased likelihood of him winning (it would). Moving on from the man many love to hate, we mourn today a man that many have loved to love. Comedian and actor Gene Wilder passed on August 29, 2016 at the age of 83. Probably best known for filling us all with both wonder and terror in film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, his death was the result

of complication from Alzheimer’s Disease. Having now found an outlet for our collective cultural hangover, I must admit that I do feel a little bit better, a little bit lighter. My head doesn’t hurt quite as much as it used to. I’m hoping you’re feeling a bit better to. But the relief will only last so long. Building theatre out of the box BY JULI HARLAND Photos submitted by Andrew Cooper Chimera Theatre has just celebrated its second-year anniversary and is looking forward to the start of their third season. In that time the theatre group has managed to become an integral part of the stage community in Kamloops and surrounding area. The Chimera Theatre group had its beginnings by sheer force of happenstance. “Basically, two years ago I was in a show with Project X Theatre,” founder and director, Andrew Cooper explains. “A friend of mine who was in the cast told me about this theatre festival in Nelson, and she said that she was going to do it but she had to drop out because of some other scheduling. So she says there’s this spot in this theatre festival, and I should apply, and I didn’t have anything ready, and it was in two weeks, so I was like: ‘Yes! I will do it!’ So I had friends, that night, who were coming to see the play that I was performing in. So I texted them while they were in line to see the show, and I was like: ‘Hey I’ve go this crazy idea. Do you want to build a show and go to Nelson in two weeks?’ And they said yes!” And with that, in less than two weeks the troupe rehearsed a script Andrew had from his TRU days, put on the show, and enjoyed it so much they literally started a company. Chimera Theatre was incorporated in September of 2014, and they haven’t looked back since. The team is now co-producing the popular Tunnel Tours at Tranquille Farm Fresh. They also put on one large scale production each year, and perform lot of projects like the recent very popular Sun Peaks run of Knights of the Sun, a medieval physical theatre piece. They also run monthly improv nights, which have grown tremendously in popularity. “I’m just blown away by how much people love the improv,” says Andrew. “The shows sell so well. People really love to laugh. Who knew?” And to encourage growth and new blood, they also hold regular workshops throughout the season. These guys are digging in, and loving every minute of it. Chimera Theatre’s season runs September through August, with not a break in sight. They’re in Victoria for the first week of September, finishing up the Victoria Fringe Festival with a movement based piece focusing on the mythical Greek story of Andromeda and Perseus. “So it’s acrobatics and dance and physical theatre and yoga stuff. We just tell the whole story using very very few words. So it’s super neat,” Andrew says. And immediately upon return they’ll be in rehearsal for the coming Tunnel Tours at Tranquille. And if that weren’t enough this troupe will be holding auditions

Featuring (left to right): Melissa Thomas, Andrew G. Cooper, Nich Gulycz and Maddison Hartloff for the Improv team on September 11. And they are scheduling a technical theatre workshop as well, to help boost the non-performer side of things. And that’s just their September. Chimera Theatre is working hard to be an integral part of the Kamloops creative community. And it’s working. We look forward to seeing what Andrew and his team have up their sleeves next. “There’s nothing I’d rather be doing,” says Andrew. “I’m so glad that I can do it in Kamloops. That I can maintain this theatre artist lifestyle in Kamloops because it’s not a huge city like Vancouver, but there is enough theatre going on that I can do it.” “People are always saying

that there’s not much going on in Kamloops, but there is so much if you really just look. There’s a lot of culture stuff going on. “We have a burlesque group that performs every month. So cool. I’ve seen a couple of their shows. I’ve been in a couple of their shows. Now we’ve got an improv group that we do. We’ve got a regional theatre company which is one of two outside of the Island or the Lower Mainland. There’s only two others in the whole province. Kelowna doesn’t have one. We do. It’s so great. We have a Symphony. We have an Art Gallery. there’s just so much culture in this town. I love it.” And there’s Chimera Theatre. Their season will be officially

launched on September 16, when they’ll announce workshops, plays, and other endeavours to the general public. You can keep up to date on their goings on at www. facebook.com/chimeratheatre. Andrew did give some hints about the major production coming up: “I can’t give away what we’re doing, but our main stage show that we’re doing, it is a scripted play, it’s going to involve a lot of movement, physical theatre, and acrobatics just like our fringe show does. That was like our test run on can we do it, and now we’re going to take all of those skills and use it in a main stage show. Half circus-y acrobatics, half scripted political drama. Stay tuned for more details.”

HOROSCOPE

Aries, Saturday, 27 August 2016 Your Week Ahead: 'Something's gotta give'. That's the expression when things get so difficult that we can't see how a situation can remain the same. Used like this, 'give' is shorthand for 'give way', when there has to be an imminent collapse because of pressure being applied. Yet why can't it mean what it says? Couldn't it also apply to the moment the universe finally presents us with what we've been looking for? Let's claim this phrase for the positive it could represent. You may well have been wondering where hope is going to spring from. But this week, something's gotta 'give'. Taurus, Saturday, 27 August 2016 Your Week Ahead: The phrase 'big-hearted' is a compliment to describe people who live, give and love to the maximum. But, medically speaking, being big-hearted is not to be admired. Those suffering from enlarged hearts are rarely in great health. Perhaps this phrase should be a warning to all those with a metaphorically enhanced ventricular capacity. Being too bighearted can be bad for emotional health too. You can't say 'yes' to everyone who tugs your heartstrings. Be kind and generous but not to your own detriment. Then you can forge a hard-wearing, mutually supportive partnership. Gemini, Saturday, 27 August 2016 Your Week Ahead: To understand what really happened in your past, just wait a while. Soon the future will arrive. Then you'll be able to see what kind of an impact your story has had so far. Too often, we dismiss valuable opportunities because they don't match our ideas. Yet, despite Mercury turning retrograde this week, don't become unduly anxious. Look at the details of your current situation. Your ruler's conjunction with Jupiter, and the arrival of a Solar Eclipse, offer you a rare chance to go back to yesterday and alter something with the potential to bring you a brighter tomorrow. Cancer, Saturday, 27 August 2016 Your Week Ahead: This week brings the chance to start afresh and renew your commitment to the key stories that run through your life. The wheat and the chaff will become more clearly separated. You can begin to differentiate between what you need on your journey, and what you can do without. It's as if a veil lifts and you see things for what they truly represent. Though much will stand up to this scrutiny, there may be casualties too. Jettisoning things will only make it easier for you to move forward in the right direction. It's a week for new endings as much as beginnings. Leo, Saturday, 27 August 2016 Your Week Ahead: Are you being treated with the respect you deserve? Are your talents being valued, your contributions appreciated? Can you do something that makes others take notice in the most positive possible way? A lot of questions but you won't find them hard to answer. Inwardly, you know what's going on. You are being empowered to go beyond an emotional reaction to a contentious situation. Your ruler's Eclipse forms a T-square that opposes Neptune and squares Saturn. You can harness its power to shatter people's illusions and begin acting with real authority. Virgo, Saturday, 27 August 2016 Your Week Ahead: The British comedian Harry Hill once blamed rising crime on mobile phones. He reasoned: more mobile phones means fewer telephone boxes; so it is harder for Superman to get changed! This week, there are opportunities for you to spring into action. You may be spoilt for choice. The fact that there are so many places for your unique skills to be applied, underlines the lack of opportunities you've faced lately. You don't need a small cubicle on a street corner to change into your power suit! You can easily access the strength to deal with whatever is thrown at you. Libra, Saturday, 27 August 2016 Your Week Ahead: As important as it is that we're kind to one another, it's just as important that we're generous to ourselves. And this is especially true for Librans. Quite often, to us, the way forward seems obvious. 'Of course they'll do this' we think, 'because that's the right thing to do to be fair to everyone'. Then, lo and behold, we're confounded to discover that a very different path has been taken, one a lot less to our liking. It's important to remember that the only way to influence an outcome is to speak up. Luckily this week your voice will be in fine fettle. Scorpio, Saturday, 27 August 2016 Your Week Ahead: Let me introduce you to two of the greatest thieves of happiness. Their names are 'outrage' and 'umbrage'. A sneaky pair, they wriggle into our thoughts, taking offence here and registering deep disapproval there. There's nothing wrong with recognising something is wrong. But there is nothing right about welling up with righteous indignation. The influence of the Eclipse invites you to start afresh with one particular situation. See what needs to be seen, do what should be done - but don't allow yourself to be held hostage by what you feel. It's important to stay calm this week. Sagittarius, Saturday, 27 August 2016 Your Week Ahead: It's not just our ego that benefits from being acknowledged by others. Our wallets, careers and hearts all have peaks and valleys that fluctuate with what we believe people think about us. It's a skilful juggling act, changing your ways to suit different situations. It's good to be known as happy-go-lucky but this is not the characteristic of someone to call in a crisis. Conversely, people like to surround themselves with success and prefer not to invite a sourpuss to their party. This week your efforts will pay off and give you that aura of success... and the good fortune you access will help you achieve it. Capricorn, Saturday, 27 August 2016 Your Week Ahead: When we go to social functions, we meet strangers and want to know who they are; they want to know who we are. So we ask questions and, from the answers, we make assumptions and jump to conclusions. No matter how hard we try, it takes time to get to know people. There will always be hidden facets that can take years to reveal themselves. The same is true for ourselves. You may think you know your limitations, but as the coming Solar Eclipse forms the corner of a T-square with Saturn opposite Neptune you're about to discover you're capable of so much more. Aquarius, Saturday, 27 August 2016 Your Week Ahead: What you think you want for yourself may not be not quite what you want! We all create fantasy shopping lists. Luxury yacht? Tick. Perfect when you winter in Monaco. Ferrari? Skip. Too few miles to the gallon. Forget the material list. What you crave are grounded people with unshakeable faith in you. Possessions can wall us away. They certainly can't hold your hand as you drift down an uncertain path. This week you're encouraged to start afresh with your way of interacting with some people close to you. Begin by revealing that what you really want, is to deepen your connection. Pisces, Saturday, 27 August 2016 Your Week Ahead: Someone is challenging the image you want to project of yourself. It may feel threatening, but it's not an affront. It's not designed to subvert your authority. In fact, it will only be detrimental if you treat it as such. New artists’ gallery opening soon UNeek Gallery is soon opening their doors in Kamloops as a space dedicated to showcasing new and up-and-coming artists in a variety of mediums and styles. The warehouse style space has housed many industrial, creative, and musical vibes, and will now be home to a variety of local new, up-and-coming artists, alongside local glass designer Mike Hedges. Mike has been the owner and operator of Unique Mirrors for longer than he cares to remember. Crafter by trade, his passion has always been for the artistic. Now he is ready to swing open the doors and share

space and encourage creativity with other artists of all genres. Our own Juli Harland of The Mix: Kamloops will be taking care of the gallery space itself, as well as being the contact point for artists wanting to get involved. “We really want to have a dedicated space for artists who are new, who haven’t had big showings, to showcase their talents, to have a space, to even have time to work, share, and highlight what they have going on,” says Juli. “There is such a dynamic group of creative people here in Kamloops, and anything that can be done

MUSIC

More than just long hair and fog machines BY JULI HARLAND Photos submitted by Dave Coalmine If Kamloops is alive with music, the Dave Coalmine Band is on the pulse of the scene’s heartbeat. Dave Coalmine, namesake of the DCB, has taken the leap to make music his life work, and so far it seems to be working pretty damned well. After what Dave calls, “a short trail of being fired over and over again,” he decided to literally give up the day jobs and put his all into the great unknown of music as a career. “I think in many ways the universe tries to push you towards the things you need to do,” says Dave, “And everybody in the whole world has a talent. If you can find what that talent is and how to utilize it properly you don’t need a nine-to-five. There’s another way to do it. I think I’m one of those people that kind of got a golden ticket. and I really need to try to do something with it. “Like any other artist there’s a shitload of self-doubt. You wonder sometimes if you’re really wonderful or if my mom just thinks I’m cool.” But he took the plunge, threw caution to the wind and took up rock and roll full time. “I tried to express it to the universe and anyone who would listen that this is what I’m trying to do with my life and

opportunities came my way. The Pogue Mahone management have been great supporters of what I do with Tuesday night jams, Friday night karaoke, and battles of the band, Saturday night entertainment.” And the DCB gets out in the community a lot. And I mean a lot. In fact, anyone in the region would be hard pressed to have not caught one of their shows at least once in the last few years. The band has gone through some transformations over the years, says Dave, and has evolved into the solid team of talent that now makes up The Dave Coalmine Band. On drums is Dion Perry. Says Dave, “Drums are the hardest instrument of them all. There’s this drum curve of talent, where you get good, and then you’re good and loud, and then you figure out how to dial it all in and become a professional at it. And he’s at the far end of that curve where he get’s it. He’s phenomenal. And his attitude is great. I love Dion.” Jody Paton, who has been with Dave the longest, plays the piano. “He really helped elevate the quality of what we were doing and it helped me pull in better musicians,” says Dave. The electric piano also allows for the synth sounds of some of the modern music on DCB’s repertoire. “We can play

things like ‘Fireball’ by Pitbull and ‘I Can’t Feel my Face’ by The Weeknd and it’s not some watered down dilution of the original. So that was really important to me.” The bass player, Matt Bond, is a fairly recent addition. “He’s just a really, really talented musician. He’s a studio musician from back east. He’s a really great player.” Dave goes on, “He’s very solid, I love his playing.” Around the same time that Matt joined, Cal May joined the group. “He’s the lead guitar,” says Dave. “We’ve competed against each other in battles of the bands back in the day. He’s very talented. He went to university in Toronto for jazz guitar, so he’s legit. He can really rip.

“For a long time I was doing lead, and I’m not very good at all. I’m a fantastic rhythm guitar player and not much more. I can grow hair and play rhythm guitar, that’s about it.” And then there’s Mr. Dave Coalmine, himself. Dave has been playing music since he was about 15-yearsold in high school in Bonnyville, Alberta. A place, he says, that he didn’t quite fit in until he stumbled into, of all things, a karaoke class. He says, “I’ve been a procrastinator my entire life. So in grade 8 I didn’t fill out my options form where you decide what extra classes you’ll be in. So I got stuck in anything that had extra space in it. Like flag football and karaoke. And so all of a sudden I’m in a class where I’m supposed to sing. And it turned out I could.” From there he built a band and went off to

seek fame and fortune. “I moved to Calgary and I lived with my band for over four or five years. Five guys fresh out of high school living together. You had to book a night off from practice, and we practiced seven nights a week unless somebody had something else to do. It was all original music. We had about 40 originals. It was a whole lot of treading water and smoking pot, but it was a lot of fun.” But, as happens that band dissipated and Dave got out of the music scene for a while. Thankfully the universe decided he wasn’t going to be gone forever. After moving to Kamloops, Dave met Darren Jones of what is now local band Bluesfoot. They were looking for a singer, and Dave stepped in. “There’s nothing like playing with people better than you to

make you a better musician. I was 12 years the youngest and they really help elevate my game. In some ways my passion helped elevate them. And that was the beginning of it, the beginnings of getting back into music.” The guys are currently working on putting together a six to 10 song EP of originals. And in the meantime they will continue to wow the crowds all over the region. Keep up with what they’ve got going on on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ davecoalmine. “I truly feel you get one trip, and this is it,” says Dave. “So between here and my coffin I want to enjoy it. I want to live without regret. And I want to earn a living out of something I’m passionate about, and that’s music. However I’m going to do that is how I’m going to do it.”

2016: The year the music died BY JAMIE HORSLEY Tone Soup Holy Ghost of Summers Past, Batman! Can you believe it’s September already? Where does the time go? And what a year it’s been. It has been said that 2016 could go down in history as “The Year the Music Died.” The first blows were struck in December of 2015 when we lost Lemmy Kilmister (Motorhead) and Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots) within nearly a week of each other. Then, in January, when David Bowie released his 25th album on his 69th birthday, nobody but he expected it to be his farewell album. Two days after its release he died of liver cancer. The whole world mourned, and Blackstar became David Bowie’s only #1 Hit album. Then, a week later, drummer and founding member of Mott the Hoople, Dale Griffin died. And that was immediately overshadowed by the death of a founding Eagles member, singer, songwriter, Glenn Frey the very next day. When we thought we couldn’t deal with any more death, we lost the legendary Paul Kantner (Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship) and Maurice White (Earth Wind and Fire). Since then we’ve lost Sir George Martin (“the fifth Beatle”), Phife Dawg (A Tribe Called Quest), Merle Haggard and the world had another good cry when we lost pop superstar, Prince. More recently, here in Canada we all experienced another great and deeply saddening moment when The Tragically Hip played what will likely be their last concert ever, as lead singer, Gord Downie, has been diagnosed with terminal

brain cancer. The Hip, a true Canadian gem, loved by millions, chose not to play their final show in the biggest stadium in the country and make the most money possible, but instead played to their home town of Kingston, Ontario (barely bigger than Kelowna) in an arena that barely held 7000 people. CBC understood the importance of the event and did the most noble thing possible. They broadcast the concert live on every one of their platforms: television, radio and streaming online — for free! It was a phenomenon. Theatres, bars, restaurants and venues everywhere held viewing parties. Others watched from home with friends and family nearby. For three hours every screen and every radio around was tuned in to this one band’s last performance. It was extremely emotional. Even Gord broke down in the second encore. I think the rest of the country broke with him. That was by far the saddest concert I’ve ever

seen. Holy crap what a depressing article! Hi Kamloops! Welcome to Tone Soup, here in The Mix: Kamloops. Hope you’re enjoying this awesome new publication we’ve got here for you. No, I promise what I write isn’t usually nearly that sad. I plan on telling you about all the best and most interesting new music I can dig up for you, and hopefully steer you clear of the worst of what the record producers would like to spoon feed the masses. I’ll pepper it with a little news of what’s coming up and what’s going on in the industry (not celebrity drama). Speaking of the most interesting new music I can dig up, have you heard of The Claypool Lennon Delirium? Yes, this is exactly what you think it is. And it’s exactly as bizarre and amazing as you’d expect. Musical monster by pedigree, Sean Lennon and musical monster by

insanity, Les Claypool have teamed up to create a psychedelic rock of an album called Monolith of Phobos. It’s full of fantastical stories about bizarre characters. As Sean put it, “The Gods of Pinot Noir shone favorably down and granted us a bundle of devilish tunes about monkeys, outer space and sexual deviancy.” It’s tough to sum it up better than that. This one’s for fans of later, more psychedelic Beatles albums (Yellow Submarine, White Album) and Primus or any of Claypool’s other creative projects. I’m running out of space here, so here’s a few more sweet 2016 releases not to miss: Fans of Nine Inch Nails and Ministry need to check out the first release from Mortiis in over six years, The Great Deceiver. Then go check out his back catalogue because you’ve never heard of him. If you want heavy music without the heavy screaming, check out

Guidance by Russian Circles; they’re instrumental progressive metal. Highly recommended to fans of Pelican and Earth Radiohead traded in their clicky sounds for an orchestra on A Moon Shaped Pool, their greatest album since Amnesiac. I’ll bet Crystal Castles fans won’t even be able to tell there’s a new singer on the new album Amnesty (I). It’s that good. And I don’t even think I need to mention the new Gojira album, Magma, because Gojira fans already know all the riffs. If you’re a fan of Mastodon, or maybe Meshuggah, you should definitely not be missing out on this. Check back next issue when we hope to have heard new albums from M.I.A. and Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. Later in the fall we’re looking forward to new ones from Opeth and Beck.
