Where we’re going Welcome to whole new year! We’re excited to see what 2017 has in store for Kamloops, the creative community, and the world around us. It’s bound to be memorable, if anything else. This issue our columnists are continuing to bring you their views. Our Dear EB has been getting good attention. And I thank you for your support while I continue plugging through the 12 issues of my journey towards becoming a fitness fiend. Or at least less of a couch potato.
There are a load of great things coming up, too. In the next issue we’ll be talking with the team from Vagina Monologues, looking into the coming KISS Film Festival, a brilliant new gallery event, and we’ll take a peek at a local author who just released their second YA novel. We’re always amazed at the sheer amount of talent in our small city. We are blessed beyond compare to be able to share, celebrate, and promote the
people and the work that make Kamloops’ creative bunch shine like the gems you all are! Keep it coming! 2017 is going to be the best year, yet. And we want to be here to champion it on! Let us know what you’ve got coming. Give us your thoughts, your events, your hopes, and plans. Let’s keep this conversation flowing. Thank you for being here with us. THEATRE
Breaking ouf of the box: Mockus takes the stage BY JULI HARLAND Chimera Theatre is gearing up for their February 9th through to the 11th production, Mockus, written by George M. Johnson and directed by Andrew G. Cooper. Mockus tells the story of an out of the box thinking Mayor, who, in the face of some of the hardest hitting violence and poverty, took on the challenges of the local troubles with mimes, balloons, and some grab-you-by-the-seatof-your-pants antics designed to find a better way of bringing peace to their city. The play itself is written by local playwright and TRU Professor and Chair of the English and Modern Languages Department at Thompson Rivers University, George M. Johnson. George has won, and been nominated for, numerous awards with his previous stage offerings: Still Life With Nudes; Look
Up, America; The Wonder; and Peace Pledge. Mockus is sure to be another solid hit for the local talent. Mockus is inspired by Mary-Wynne Ashford, and her speech about the antipolitician Mayors of Bogota, Columbia, particularly Antanas Mockus, and by the description in her book, Enough Blood Shed: 101 Solutions to Violence, Terror and War. In the spotlight is the Mayor of Gabota, Juan Antonio, played by actor Todd Sullivan, and his clown counterpart, Mockus Aurelius, played by Brittany McCarthy. “I think it’s a bit about thinking outside the box when it comes to facing issues and challenges and trying to face things in a more peaceful and creative, emphasis on creative, way,” says Todd. “Don’t get locked into old systems that don’t work. Don’t be afraid to try new things.
The cast of Chimera Theatre’s upcoming production of the play Mockus works a scene at a recent rehearsal. “It is, somewhat, based on a true story. There was a Mayor in Bogota named Antanas Mockus, who implemented a lot of the things that are shown in the
play. They were these sort of fun, clowny, thinking outside the box things. Many of them, actually, worked. Even though they were completely the opposite of what people traditionally thought would have worked.” The play, itself, thinks outside of the box. A feast for the eyes, the show features acrobatics, dance, clowning, and magic mixed in a choreographic symphony of the stage marked with a compelling story and solid performers. “It’s been really challenging in different ways, like I have to do magic, which I’ve never done before. So
learning a new skill, or clowning, which I’ve never done before. It’s been challenging in that way,” says Brittany. “But also the process has been really good. I’ve worked with half this cast, so it’s nice to see familiar faces. But I’ve also never worked with Todd before, and we’re in a lot of scenes together, we do a lot of silly stuff together, so I have to get all in his personal space. It’s been fun, he’s my pal. I yell at him all the time.” Mockus is the first Chimera production for long time thespian and playwright, Todd. “I’m getting a chance to meet a bunch of new people, and work
NOW PLAYING
with a bunch of new people. Everyone’s been really warm and welcoming. Except for Brittany,” he laughs. The camaraderie is evident in the playful teasing that spills out to the performance, itself. Rounding out the cast is: Harmony Maher; Morgan Benedict; Taylor James McCallum; Josh Sunderman; Dela Coutts; Taryn Coleman; and Nathan Medos. Mockus will take the Pavilion stage on February 9th and run through to the 11th. Tickets can be found at kamloopslive.com, or at the Kamloops Box Office at the Pavilion Theatre at 1025 Lorne Street.

Getting a jump start on fitness: The pain continues BY JULI HARLAND On December 6 I started a journey to wellness. A response to my own need for energy to play with my five year old. A need to care for my well being in the face of my mother’s battle for health. The medical reality that I need to get a handle on my blood sugar if I want to avoid insulin. And the desire to get my sexy back, I’m sure I left it somewhere, I just have to remember where…. So thank you for keeping up with me, checking in, and being my incredibly public accountability partner. Stats over the holidays? Well, I didn’t lose anything, but I didn’t gain anything, either, and, for me, that’s a bloody victory. It’s been a few weeks since the last check in, and there have been a few changes. The biggest change being that I’m working with a new trainer. James Krause, from Empowered Fitness. The next big change, or addition, really, is my ultimate goal. The piece de resistance. The light on the horizon ... or in my case, the thing that may very well have me dragged off in a stretcher yelling about the injustice of a broken ass. What is this palace of pain that I’m running (jogging … speed walking, really) towards? Tough Mudder 2017. Or, at least the Half Mudder, which has all the awesome with half the kilometers, and none of the pesky electricity or ice. Starting out with James has been a whole new ball of wax. Our first meeting started with a pile of paperwork that talked about my medical history, fitness levels, diet, reasons for getting fit, and my personal goals (note to self blurting out Tough Mudder can have long term effects). I was impressed with this young fella’s professionalism. And
he trains his mom, how sweet is that. We are working out three days a week. Now I am perpetually late for most everything, workouts included. Seriously, ask anyone who has ever planned anything with me, ever. It’s not for lack of trying. I simply have a broken fuse in my brain that tells me that I have way more time than I have. And I have the attention span of a gnat. James will have none of that. None. I’m late? Shitty deal. That comes out of our workout time. Let me tell you, that is motivating. Next time I was early. AND did my warm up. I might just be on time for a thing or two. I didn’t want to completely die after the first work out. But I did sleep like the dead. In fact sleep is one of those things I’m supposed to do more of. “Hahahaha .. sleep,” I guffawed. I’ve not been given ‘the mom’ look by someone other than my own mother or those I gave birth to in a very long time. Let me tell you, I was given that look. So, okay, I’m working on it. That one could take some time. The other thing I’m supposed to work on is my coffee intake. “But … but .. coffee!” I wail. “Ya, but you want to sleep,” says James. I’m thinking, do I really want to sleep? So we came to an agreement. No coffee after 2:00 pm. Which I wrangled from noon. A girl has to cheer the small victories. The next day I received a text, asking about my coffee. And my sleep. The coffee I’ve been good with. I’m overdosing on teas and flavoured water. Sleep is coming a little harder. I find my most creative time is at night, after the five year old is in bed and the tea is made. And that creative streak can take me through to the wee hours of the morning. Often. Sadly, the five year old also means that I have to get up early to get her to school,

and then there’s whole ‘work’ thing. It doesn’t leave a lot of time for the sandman to visit. More he drops in for a quick coffee … er … tea, and then leaves. So if anyone has some tips on getting creative during the day, I’m all ears. All caffeinedeprived ears. I’ve also been trying to keep up on daily meditation, something I have been pretty hardcore about in the past, but have fallen out of habit. In the last few weeks I must have tried about a dozen websites and phone apps for guided meditation, breathing exercises, imagery, and so on. The one I found, that I like, is a simple phone app called Calm. It’s got a number of properties to it, and it notifies me every day to take time out to
meditate or breathe. I’ve been using it, sometimes with the little one, pretty much every day for a week. Between the texts from James, and the phone app asking me to breathe, I am having no choice but to focus on my health.
I did plan on a Zumba class, but ended up going to the wrong YMCA. Sigh. Ah well, I stuck around, anyhow, and did cardio for close to an hour, instead. Next Saturday, however, Zumba is on the list. I’ve also been

hitting the swimming pool. I love being under the water, and it helps me to forget that it’s a million degrees below zero outside. Of course there are challenges. With The Mix being independent and brand new, it takes a whole lot of my time, energy, and resources to get it out to the public. The household has had to make some sacrifices to get the paper off the ground, my mom is battling cancer, the five year old is at that point where she needs to get involved in extracurricular activities, and I’m crawling out of the winter blues. Normal things. But there are days when I run out of spoons early in the day. I am thankful to my friends and family for all that they give in time, support, cheerleading, and late night mental health phone calls. Hell, I’ve even gone so far as to make a “goal board” to hang in the kitchen to keep the goals in sight. The little one is learning to read, so she likes to take it down and remind me about it. Every day. “You’re drinking water again because your sign says to drink lots of water. Water is good for you, right mom?” “Yes, it is, kiddo. It’s going to help me be healthy for a long time” And that, right there, is why I’m taking this journey in the first place.

I’ll be honest with you -- I took a certain amount of joy in not having to care a whole lot about what was going on in the pop culture zeitgeist over the last few weeks. And as my deadline approached, I started to worry that I might not have much to write about for this issue. Then, in the last few days … well, let’s just say I haven’t been too worried about what I was going to write about. First, let’s talk about The Golden Globes. No, not the movies (I’d love to be able to discuss La La Land but apparently my screener got lost in the mail) but the speech given by the winner of the Cecil B. DeMille award, Meryl Streep. Who, but the way, if you’ll indulge me for just a moment, is a goddamn treasure. Love you, Meryl. Streep took the opportunity and the platform that

it provided her to speak out against Donald Trump, and in particular to zero in on his apparent mocking of a disabled reporter, saying, “This instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing.”
Response to Streep’s comments have kind of been all over the map. For every note of support, there’s someone else citing her comments as being just the sort of elitist Hollywood prattle that pushed people to vote for Trump in the first place. And then there were those, including, apparently, Marky Mark Whalberg, arguing that Streep, and other stars like her, should just shut up about politics and stick to making entertainment. Which, I’m sorry, is just dumb. Dumb, dumb, dumb. As dumb as many of the characters that Wahlberg has played in the past. Maybe even dumber. Here’s the thing about politics. It affects everyone. You, me, that guy over there, Meryl Streep. And as such, we all have a vested

interest in it. We all have a reason to care about whether it’s working. And we all have a right to stand on our individual soap boxes and say what we think. So if Streep wants to take to the stage at the Golden Globes while receiving her lifetime achievement honour and talk about how Trump can apparently be a bit of a shitbag, that’s her right. Or, for example, I could use this column to talk about how weird and kind of fucked up it is that Donald Trump apparently hired a bunch of prostitutes to join him in the Presidential Suite of the Ritz Carlton in Moscow so they could pee all over the bed, and therefor defile the spot where President Obama and his wife had recently slept. Because, oh, by the way, that’s a story that came out the last few days too.
As much as I hate to admit it, Donald Trump appears to be the pop cultural inspiration gift that keeps on giving. Specifically, an unconfirmed intelligence report was published by Buzzfeed (it’s up at https://www. documentcloud.org/ documents/3259984Trump-IntelligenceAllegations.html if anyone wants to peek at it themselves) alleging a great number of troubling things about the President Elect of the United States. The thing about the prostitutes peeing is probably the least concerning of it all, actually, but it’s the bit that seemed to get the most traction on Twitter. The Internet is nothing if not classy. More concerning were claims that the Russian government had been working with Trump for the last five years, along with
confirmation that they had in fact been behind the hacks of the Democratic National Committee computers that were all over Wikileaks during the election. If all of this seems like a bit much to take in -- and believe me, I feel exactly the same way -- I understand that the film La La Land is pretty good, and might provide a good chance to distract yourself with some singing and dancing and some Ryan Gosling. I can’t vouch for it myself, though. At least not yet. I’m sure that screener will be here any day now. You can email me at guru@ themixkamloops. com or follow me on twitter at twitter. com/lewzr -- I’ve even been tweeting a bit in the new year! Hunt me. I am prey
Hunt me. I am prey. Lurking in the brush, Offering snippets of juicy delights. Soft flesh primed and ripe. It will be a lengthy hunt. I will run. My meat is better when flushed from flight. Muscles become lean and the sinew softens, As does my resistance. The days will pass and I will tire, Surrendering all that I am to you. Alive in the grip of your teeth. Not to be hastily ravaged and devoured whole, But slowly savoured. Take tender nibbles and cradle me in your mouth. Allow my flavours to glide across your your tongue, A decadent dance with your taste buds. Freed as I am consumed and become a part of you. Taste my past present and our future simultaneously. As predator, you may fool yourself, Believing you hold the power. You have taken down your prey! But once the prey is absorbed, She can never be completely eliminated . She is with you forever. The microbes and proteins that define her now define you. Her dreams now mingle with yours and become new. Hunt me. I am prey. I will nourish you. My flesh and blood dissolve in your belly Fine particles swim through your body. Finding new shores in your organs. Seeds planted in a foreign land. Destined for growth. Paths entwined Until the Hunter becomes the Hunted born again as prey. — Susan Wolf

Tone Soup’s top 10 albums of 2016 Before I get started, I’d just like to say that this is simply my favourite and most listened to of all the albums I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing for you in 2016. Even though I was fairly oblivious to much of what came out before we got started in August, I still had a ridiculously hard time narrowing about 35 albums down to ten. Without further ado, here are my favourite albums this year: 10. Tanya Tagaq, Retribution Most terrifying album. Best song: “Retribution” Runners up: “Rape Me” 9. Nine Inch Nails, Not the Actual Events Best album that I barely got to listen to. Best song: “The Idea of You” Runner Up: “She’s Gone Away” 8. Regina Spektor, Remember Us To Life Best Piano Rock album. Best Song: “Grand Hotel” Runner Up: “Sellers of Flowers” 7. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Skeleton Tree Best Gothic album. Best song: “Anthrocene” Runner up: “Distant Sky” 6. Every Time I Die, Lo w Teens Best album to vent along with. Best song: “Religion
of Speed” Runner up: “The Coin Has a Say”
5. Lady Gaga, Joanne Well 2016 was a truly bizarre year. I never, ever thought that a Lady Gaga album would be in my Top 10, let alone Top 5. Gaga is truly fed up with the industry that forces her to conform to their moulds. She’s done making money for other people. She’s now a mature pop star at the height of her career and she can do whatever the hell she wants. And she is. This album is far more mature and showcases a wide variety of oldschool inspiration. It’s leaps and bounds from the glam pop that she’s so well known for, and it’s magnificent. Best song: “Angel Down” Runners up: “John Wayne”, “Joanne”, “AYO”
4. Mr Oizo, All Wet OK, OK, I admit, this might not be

everyone’s cup of tea but I love this weird, chaotic, breaky shit. This is Mr. Oizo’s first album to feature other artists on a majority of the tracks. Long-time fans weren’t really impressed with the modern pop sounds that the other artist brought with them, arguing that the true Oizo was drowned out by it all. I think the step a little closer to the mainstream will open a broader audience to him. And really, there are enough of his own tracks and his influence does shine through the collaborations enough that this album could be one of his best, and most accessible albums to date. Best song: “Low Ink” Runners up: “Chairs” (feat. Mocky), “Freezing Out” (feat. Peaches), “Goulag Drums”
— on Monolith of Phobos Best song: “Lazarus” Runners up: “Blackstar”, “Dollar Days”, “Girl Loves Me”
3. David Bowie, Blackstar The album that foreshadowed the tragedy of 2016. Bowie infamously released this album and then, the next day, ascended back to the star he came from. (See what I did there?) His death hit so soon after the album that few reviewers were able to separate the album from the fact that this was “David Bowie’s last album”; his farewell. Yet we know now that more was planned. Death was on his mind while he penned these songs, that much is obvious, but this was not meant to be his final farewell. Nevertheless, it’s an instant classic, and will go down in history as his first #1 selling album.
2. Goat, Requiem Goat was a new discovery for me in 2016 with this (their fourth) album. I love everything about this band. I love the legend of the origin of the band (regardless of the amount of truth behind it — I love the legend of Gwar too, so there ya have it). I love the Eastern European folk flavour married with bits of American rock and countless other worldly influences. I love their jam-band style. It’s the most organic sounding music I’ve heard all year. Best song: “Goatfuzz” Runners up: “Trouble in the Streets”, “I Sing in Silence”, “Temple Rhythms”

1. The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Monolith of Phobos Oh. My. God. I cannot gush enough about this album. Les Claypool and Sean Lennon make the perfect psychedelic pair. Sean inherited his psych-pop sensibilities from his father, while Les was granted the power of space bass from the mushroom gods. Together, these two glorious freaks of nature have spawned even more bizarre characters than themselves within the verses of this incredible album. Best song: “Monolith of Phobos” Runners up: “Mr. Wright”, “Bubbles Burst”, “Captain Lariat”

anything particularly exciting in the dating world. I’ve thought a bit about removing myself from the dating pool until I can get my finances in a better situation, but the fact is, I’d still really like to meet someone. Is there any way I can be a reasonably decent catch even if if my wallet is pretty much empty? Hows this? You have an opportunity. It’s easy to buy love, or something that looks like it. As things stand for you, if someone
choses you, you know it’s because you’re who they want to be with. If they choose not to be with you either because your finances don’t match or because you can’t offer the opportunities they might be looking for, so be it. You are more than your wallet. Your situation is what it is—but you are who you are. It might not feel like enough, and for some, and for a while, it might not be. Money definitely widens a person’s appeal. But there are more people interested than you think. You might have to change your demo a bit—if you’re looking for love among the moneyed, you will likely be disappointed. But there are people out there for whom money is down the list of priorities. Your situation will ebb and flow over your lifetime. There are people who would be thrilled to walk that journey with you. Be ready to find them-keep your eyes up and a smile ready. For the right person, who you are is plenty.
