Interest sought for a local Men’s Shed T wo Roxby Downs residents are seeking expressions of interest from the community regarding the establishment of a local Men’s Shed.
Peter O’Conner and Deon Vosser would love to have a Men’s Shed in Roxby Downs.
There are around 1,000 Men’s Sheds located around Australia, which aim to support men with a mental or debilitating illness, provide them with a place to interact with other men and participate in activities, and help identify and resolve men’s health issues. People who visit Men’s Shed work together on projects that would often be done in a backyard shed, while forming bonds and talking openly with their peers. There are several Men’s Sheds in regional South Australia, including at Whyalla and Port Augusta, but local residents Peter O’Connor and Deon Vosser would like to see one in Roxby Downs. “A Men’s Shed is a very practical thing, and it’s very good for men’s mental health,” Mr O’Connor said. “It gives older men an opportunity to teach younger men skills. “Men can gather round, and comradery is established. “We think it’s a great concept,
and we would like to see one established here.” Mr Vosser believes it’s important for a mining town like Roxby Downs to have a Men’s Shed. “In the mining industry, [particularly] the FIFO and shift work industry, there’s a bit of a problem with regards to mental health,” he said. “In this very town, [there’s been incidents] that we know of. “From a practical perspective, it gives us that access to equipment and knowledge, but it also gives the people who suffer a place to go.” While he acknowledged that the local population is frequently changing, Mr Vosser thinks that’s another good reason to establish a Men’s Shed in the area. “We want to create that facility for Roxby Downs, knowing we have a transient population, but I don’t think that should be a reason we shouldn’t try,” he said. “I think it will still help a lot of people who come into town and don’t have the extended friends and family with them. “Having a facility like that would create access to a family feeling.” Mr O’Connor has spoken with the Member for Giles Eddie Hughes about the idea of a Roxby Downs Men’s Shed, but
he now wants to hear from residents whether this is something they would utilise. “We have no idea how many people we want or need; we just want to find out who is interested, and out of those, who would be interested in getting it off the ground,” he said. “And we also want to hear about their interests,” Mr Vosser added. “I may be interested in woodwork, but you may be interested in pottery, so we want to know how many [people are interested in having a local Men’s Shed], and what skills you can bring.” Mr Vosser hopes that there is enough of a demand to see a Men’s Shed developed. “The benefits would be that it gives men a place to connect, and it’s a social arena that’s not just sport,” he said. “It’s a safe place, not a place where you have to perform or be something else, you can be yourself. “It gives you that comradery, and it gives you the opportunity to build relationships and friendships, and find outlets. “And you can access tools!” If you would be interested in having a local Men’s Shed, contact Mr O’Connor and Mr Vosser via info.roxbyshed@mail.com

or the first time, Dunes Café will be open over the Christmas and New Year period, excluding Christmas Day.
Normally the café would close for at least two weeks over the festive season, but according to Dunes Café Manager Joe D’Arrigo, customers want to see it remain open. “Basically throughout the few years that I’ve been here we have had feedback of ‘maybe you should open up a little bit’,” he said. “7/7 has also played a part in us opening. “It’s experimental; it may not
work, but we are giving it a go.” Mr D’Arrigo said there will be some changes to the menu during this period. “We are doing a smaller, condensed menu, but there will be breakfast throughout the whole day,” he said. “However, we will only be serving cake and coffee on public holidays.” Mr D’Arrigo encouraged residents to take advantage of this opportunity and bring their family and friends to the café over the holiday period. “A lot of the town will be closed, so this will be the hub,” he said.
“You can imagine what the town looks like, and having this place open will be good. “You can come and watch a movie and have a coffee and something to eat. “This is definitely a trial, and we are looking forward to it working.” Dunes Café will be open every day excluding Christmas Day from 9am-2pm, and from 10am2pm on public holidays. For more information, contact 8671 0500. RIGHT: Josh Arancelovic from Dunes Cafe, which will be open over the Christmas and New Year period.
School’s out at Woomera
S
taff and students at the Woomera Area School (WAS) are celebrating a successful year.
Speaking with The Monitor last week before school finished for the year, Principal Tony Holden said 2017 had been a good year for the WAS. “It’s been very positive this year,” he said. “It’s been a productive year, and we are quite happy with how everything has gone.” Mr Holden was really pleased with the students’ academic performance. “All of our students have shown growth this year,” he said. “We had three students who began their SACE (South Australian Certificate of Education), and all of them passed all of the compulsory components,” he said. “The junior school all passed everything they did; all of their maths, science, reading, literacy, and numeracy is all progressing smoothly, so on that front it’s pleasing to say that all of the kids set and achieved their goals this year. “We are really pleased with their achievements, and the teachers have worked hard with them to make sure that they’ve been able to get through
and have done a really good job with them.” When reflecting on 2017, Mr Holden said there were many highlights for staff and students. “We’ve appointed a Principal to the position now for the next five years [which is me],” he said. “We’ve also converted our casual primary teaching position to a permanent position, and that’s Lisa-Jane Parsons. “We had our school camp at Tasmania which went really well; everyone enjoyed that and there were lots of exciting things that we did there.” The State Government’s Department of Education also conducted an external school review on WAS during Term 3, and Mr Holden was thrilled with the findings. “ The Department comes in and looks at what we do and suggests ways of improving or working differently, and they highlight all of the positives and that kind of thing, and we came out of that very well,” he said. “The review did suggest some areas of change which we are on to, and we will be addressing those as of next year. “But they were extremely positive com-
ments so we were very pleased about that.” Mr Holden is already looking forward to 2018. “We are introducing a lot of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) based activities, so we are going to be doing robotics with all of our primary kids,” he said. “We are also going to be introducing computerised model railways and drones, so the kids will have a lot of hands on stuff with that, and that will all be integrated with their everyday curriculum learning. “They’re all very excited about that, especially now that everything is starting to turn up.” WAS is also expecting an increase in the number of students attending the school. “At this stage, our likely enrolment is about 15 or 16 students, which is up considerably from this year,” Mr Holden said. “[In 2017], we started with 11 and ended up with six. “We’ll start the year off with three Year 12 students as well which is excellent. “We are really looking forward to a more productive year next year.” Mr Holden thanked WAS’ Governing Council Chairperson Alamein Brown, and this year’s
recipient of the school’s Rowan Ramsey Award Steve Kowald for all of their efforts. He also thanked the school’s staff and Governing Council for their hard work and support.

Christmas messages Amanda Astri - The Monitor Journalist
‘
I
2017 has been a year of change at The Monitor.
While we’ve farewelled our Finance and Sales Assistant Mel Rigden and Managing Editor Amanda Hudson, we’ve welcomed back Mikaela Wedding from maternity leave, and I joined the team in August. It’s been a huge change for me moving 1,800 kilometres across the country, and I’ve loved the new challenge of working for The Monitor. In the last four months, I’ve been lucky to have met so many amazing people who have not only made me feel welcome in my new home, they’ve also had some incredible stories to tell. Something I have quickly learnt is that the community spirit in Roxby and the surrounding regions is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. This is evident in the ‘Love for Lexi’ fundraising campaign. Around two months after I started at The Monitor, I heard the devastating news that two year old local girl Lexi Helm was diagnosed with leukaemia. While still dealing with the news, within hours, a few people quickly got to work raising money to support Lexi and her family while she receives treatment in Adelaide. Through the generosity of local residents and businesses, over $30,000 has been raised. For a small town that has had a challenging few years, this fundraising effort blew me away. I’ve been frequently told how giving

this community is, and I believe it. I’ve seen it. Hearing these kinds of stories has made me feel very lucky to live in this town and work at this paper. I’d like to thank those who have advertised with The Monitor this year, as well as the people, organisations, and groups who have contributed stories and content to the paper, and to those who have allowed us to share your stories with the community. And of course, a big thank you to our readers for your support in 2017. I look forward to seeing what 2018 has in store for you and this region. On behalf of The Monitor, I’d like to wish you and your family a safe and Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.
t’s hard to believe 2017 is almost finished – what an amazing year we’ve had.
It has been another big year at Olympic Dam. One of my personal highlights was announcing our partnership with the mighty AFLW Crows team. At Olympic Dam, we believe that there’s no job a woman can’t do, and similarly no sport a woman can’t play. My hope is that young people living in rural and remote Australia can look up to the AFLW Crows team and understand that anything is possible. The players in the team juggle caring commitments, jobs, community life, as well as living in some very remote locations – and they make it work. After all, these are the winners of the inaugural AFLW competition! I’m really pleased that local communities were able to participate in the AFLW Crows ‘Growing With Gratitude’ seminars recently in support of the partnership. After all, this is what our partnerships are all about. The team at Olympic Dam is growing, and over the past nine months, we have been actively recruiting in South Australia as we go through a time of investment into our operation. It’s great to see quite a number of new team members from Roxby Downs working in a variety of roles across the surface and mine. We will always need local expertise at Olympic Dam, and if you are interested in working with the #OlympicDamSquad, please visit the BHP website (www.bhp.com/our-approach/work-with-us) and register. It’s been a great year for our community partnerships too, with Mining Minds taking out the Community category at the prestigious BHP Health Safety Environment and Community (HSEC) Awards in Melbourne.

As the year has progressed, we have seen the town fill with people, businesses get busier, and the feeling of positiveness return to our community. Each month, the agenda for the Community Board has been full of activities and suggestions for improvement through the various forums. The community can be proud of how it has weathered the slow times and come out the other side, with a brighter and wonderfully resilient attitude. There has been changes of personnel at the Roxby Downs Council, and the Administrator Geoff Whitbread and the Chief Executive Roy Blight are extremely dedicated to cost reduction, improved communication, and positive outcomes right across the community. BHP have undertaken an extensive maintenance program in the latter part of 2017, all aimed at ensuring longevity for the Olympic Dam mine and healthy employment opportunities for many years to come. I am looking forward to positive

times in 2018, and a vibrant community where residents are happy, businesses are buoyant, and the future for all is more secure. I wish you all an enjoyable and safe Festive Season full of family, friends and happy times.
We continue to support a number of important local partnerships including Arid Recovery, Time for Wellbeing, Strengthening our Families, and Fliipsyde Youth Health Services, and I look forward to their success in 2018. As the year draws to a close, I wanted to extend my thanks to the team at Olympic Dam, their families, and the wider community. Thank you for your continued support throughout 2017. Please take the time over the Christmas break to recharge, and let’s make 2018 our best year yet. Please stay safe. Jacqui
t’s Christmas? Once again
we are racing towards Christmas Day, a day of celebration, gifts, food, fun, and family. All my life I have known Christmas to be a special day. As a young child it was magical; the anticipation daunting, the excitement too much and the challenge to stay awake too great! I never managed to meet Father Christmas when he brought gifts to our home. I tried! Oh, how I tried to stay awake and thank him. How did he always know what I wanted? Well, a lot of water has gone under the bridge since then and I have gained some knowledge about those days and about him, where he comes from, and how he knows what the kids want, but it’s a secret! As an adult, my gifts come from family, friends, and loved ones. In turn, I give gifts to them. There is an exchange and a transaction that takes place, and this brings great enjoyment
and delight. A few years ago, I learned of another wise Father. The Father of us all, Father God. The Almighty God, or to many of us, Daddy, Abba, or Papa. He is also a gift giver, and it is why we have such a festival in the first place. He sent his Anointed Son, His only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, as a gift to an estranged world so that all who would believe in Him and receive Him would receive the gift of eternal life and the promise of His help today, tomorrow, and forever more. That’s a pretty cool gift, I think! To have the personal attention of the one who created everything! The lyrics of the famous Christmas Carol ‘Hark, The Herald Angel Sings’ say “Glory to the newborn King! Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled”, which speaks of this marvellous gift of mercy, peace and reconciliation through His Son – The Newborn King!
As a Pastor, I meet many people who are fearful of Him, think He is angry at them, or that they are not worthy to receive His gift. This is just not true! He knows you…..everything! And yet He loves you and wants to care for you. Maybe this year is the year that you give Him the greatest gift you can – YOU! Have a Very Merry Christmas
Geoff Whitbread - Roxby Council Administrator

017 is marked by a number of notable events, projects, and happenings in the town. The Governance Review medium term recommendations were implemented, and most significantly we welcomed the appointment of Roy Blight as Chief Executive in July. The much anticipated Splashpad was completed and is a great aquatic addition to the Roxbylink complex. Richardson Place was improved in its appeal and significance as a public space - increased shaded areas, improved visibility, more seating, and ease of access in terms of parking. The planning work for an upgrade to the Emu Walk also commenced. Council was successful in obtaining partial government funding for these projects. On the financial performance front, the CounPage 4 -- Wednesday, December 20, 2017
cil received a “clean bill of health” from the external auditor, and recorded a turnaround of $1.4million in budget performance. In setting the current financial year budget and taking into account inflation, council rates, electricity, water, and sewer charges marginally decreased. We continually sought to improve our community communications and note the successful interactive use of Facebook in particular. The array of formal and informal activities available in Roxby - be they social, artistic, sport, or leisure - are immense, and the participation rates are generally high which is a good measure of community wellbeing. The facilities and organisations that underpin these activities are mostly driven by volunteers to whom we should be very grateful. BHP, the Council, Community Board, and a number of key businesses are terrific sponsors and supporters.
In 2018, we at the Council will be focusing much of our effort into planning (community plan, strategic plan, long term financial plan, asset plan, as well as the annual business plan) – all of which are essential building blocks to provide a solid foundation for the future of the town. To that end, we will be working closely with BHP as their direction will be determinate. Current indications from the BHP executive are very encouraging for an economically strong next several years. In recognising the renewed activity in the town, The Dunes café, gym and pool will be open this year during the Christmas/New year period – see Roxbylink Facebook for further information. On behalf of us all at Roxbylink and the Council office, I wish you a happy Christmas and a safe passage for those many who travel.

Monitor OPINION The
Police to crackdown on underage drinking
Let’s make this the festive season of belonging
For many Australians, the festive season is one of joy and connection, where friendships and family are celebrated, food is shared and holiday plans are made. Yet for others in our neighbourhoods, that sense of togetherness, warmth and belonging will not be felt, and rather an acute sense of loneliness will take hold. Christmas Day might be lunch for one, sleeping rough or spent with the paralysing uncertainty of not knowing where family is, after being separated because of war or conflict. There is hope. At Red Cross loneliness is not something to be ashamed
of. We’re there for people who have nobody else: calling and visiting, driving them to appointments, offering one-to-one support to those struggling with mental illness, or giving a warm welcome to those seeking safety from violence or persecution. We know loneliness doesn’t discriminate. It stealthily creeps into our lives, no matter our age, gender or ethnicity, and takes hold when tragedy happens, like losing a loved one, a divorce or losing your job. And if you don’t catch it early, loneliness can reach chronic levels and have a significant effect on our health. But it’s bigger than that. When there’s no one by your side, and you’re feeling deeply isolated, communities start to become less trusting,

The first set of reforms to the State’s liquor laws came into effect on 18 December, and make the supply of liquor to a minor under the age of 18, and the consumption or possession of liquor by a minor an offence, except under strict conditions. The new laws will target large parties and events where groups of teenagers have been supplied with alcohol, with the aim of making ‘after parties’ for minors a thing of the past.
Anyone who supplies liquor to a minor in contravention of the new laws will face a maximum penalty of $10,000, or a fine of $500. Minors who are caught with alcohol in contravention of the new laws will face a maximum penalty of $2,500, or a fine of $210. Minister of Consumer and Business Services John Rau is pleased to see the new laws introduced, which were developed in response to a 2016 review conducted by retired Supreme Court Judge Tim Anderson QC. “Tim Anderson’s review into our liquor laws highlighted the need for tougher laws govern-

lmo st a we ek of extreme temperatures saw weather records smashed in the far north last week.
The high temperatures kicked in last Tuesday, with Roxby Downs climbing to 41.3, but it was Wednesd ay that began the heat record in nearby Woomera. Wednes day reached top of 46.1 degrees in Woomer a, followed by 46.8 on Thursday, 46.1 on Friday and 46.1 on Saturday. Roxby Downs wasn’t far behind with temperatures of 46 degrees on Wednesday, 46.8 on Thursday, 45.9 on Friday and 46.4 on Saturday, with the coolest daily minimum recorded on Wednesday morning (24.4 degrees).
While the entire State felt the brunt of an extreme weather pattern, it was Woomera residents who sweltered the most, with a new record set for the hottest four days in a row. According to Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) Senior Climatologist Darren Ray, Woome ra experienced its hottest run of four days equal to or greater than 45 degrees. “Our temperature records for Woomer a go back to 1949, and this was CONTINUED ON the first run of four days PAGE 3 greater than 46 degrees,” PICTURED: Chelsea Mr Ray said. “Woomera has had four Baggs attempts to stay cool during the heat days in a row greater than wave last week. 44 before, but not 45 or 46.” PHOTO: Patrick Glover

any families in Roxby Downs leave town over the Christmas holidays, and it’s important to take precautions to ensure your house is safe while you’re away.
You might like to consider the following tips when getting ready to leave on holiday: - Ensure you leave the house securely locked, including windows. - Ask a neighbour or friend to collect your mail. - Secure your garage and move bikes inside the house. - Put spare keys for your cars and house out of sight. - Consider light timers to make your house appear occupied while you’re away. - Do not leave cash, presents or jewellery lying around the home. - Ensure your lawn and garden are tidied before you leave. Lock the shed door and ensure all garden equipment has been put away. A large number of break-ins are opportunistic, but taking these easy steps will prevent you and your family from becoming victims of crime. Ensuring your property is secure while you’re away will make for a fun and stress free break. If you witness any suspicious activity, it’s very important to let the Police know. You can contact the Roxby Downs Police Station on 8671 4200.

Pink Stumps plans underway P
reparations have begun for the 2018 Pink Stumps Day in Roxby Downs.
The annual local event organised by the Roxby Districts Cricket Association (RDCA) is one of the most successful fundraisers for the McGrath Foundation, which supports breast cancer patients around the nation. RDCA President Ben Vandeleur hopes that next year’s Pink Stumps Day, which will be held on Saturday 17 February, will be the best one yet. “What it’s been in the past is a community event where there’s two teams picked from the local community which include police officers, cricket players, and people from all walks of life, and they would play each other in a fun, charity game” he said. “This year, what we are looking at trying to do is have the T20 grand final on Pick Stumps Day and actually make it a proper contest, and do the community stuff [including the charity game] prior and during that game. “We’d have the majority of it under lights, plus bouncy castles and face painters for kids, music between balls, and we might have catching contests where every catch adds $50 towards the cause or something like that. “It will be a community day with some fun and games, and we’ll make it as fun as we possibly can.” In October 2016, Glenn McGrath himself visited Roxby Downs to thank the community for their support of previous Pink Stumps Day events.
There was no high profile guest at this year’s event, but Vandeleur is hoping that won’t be the case next year. “I’m trying to get Daryl Braithwaite,” he said. “Everyone wants Daryl to play ‘The Horses’. “He’s a busy guy, but I am stalking him on Facebook.” This year the RDCA reached a goal of raising $100,000 for the McGrath Foundation, and Vandeleur encouraged the community and sponsors to continue supporting the cause. “If we can raise $5,000 on [Pink Stumps Day next year] that would be great,” he said. “I think it’s such a phenomenal community, and I hope that Pink Stumps Day has become one of our marquee days like the Christmas pageant. “It’s one of those days that we all get around, and as much as it is good to support an external cause like the McGrath Foundation, it’s also just a coming together of the community as well just to remind ourselves where we’ve come from and where we are going to go.” The RDCA is forming a subcommittee for next year’s Pink Stumps Day which will help with the organising of the event. Vandeleur wants to hold a subcommittee meeting in the near future. If you would like to join the Pink Stumps Day subcommittee, contact Vandeleur on 0407 794 399.
