(Re: Make It Stop!, Issue 177) Regarding your article on telemarketing calls, I want to say that I am on the Do Not Call list, and even though some calls do get through here and there, they are few and far between. However (and I will not be surprised if many other people write in to you about the same issue), I am bombarded with marketing/robocalls daily from within the heimish community — announcing sales in stores or mosdos raising funds (not to mention what comes in before and on Election Day!). Some messages go on and on for minutes! Isn’t it disrespectful of people’s time? How many times do I stop what I am doing and answer the phone, only to find out it’s a robocall of some sort? How I wish there could be a Do Not Call system set up within the local community to stop the harassment. And if spreading your message is indeed that important, please keep it very short! Mrs. F.C.

Thanks for your interesting article about telemarketers. The million-dollar question I have is how all the Yiddishe telemarketing calls circumvent the Do Not Call list. It is annoying to receive so many calls! I came home from shopping the other day to 10 missed calls — all advertisements and telemarketers! It must be severely restricted, if not stopped altogether. Thanks for finally bringing up this topic, R.W.

(Re: Etiquette Through the Wires, Issue 177) I wanted to comment on the article about phone communication. It was a very good article with strong points, and I’d like to add one thing: that one should be aware that the person who is calling is the one who is taking the other person’s time, and as such, the caller should not ask the other party to wait while they take a beep. The caller beeping in can leave a voicemail, or if you have a working caller ID, you can call them back when you hang up. Also, callers should not assume that the person they’re calling will see their name on the caller ID. Sometimes a caller ID may not work, and some recipients don’t even have caller ID. Unless you leave a message, never assume that the other party has seen that you’ve called. Thank you for a great magazine. N.W.

GOT THE WRONG NUMBER (Re: 18 Phone Numbers to Have on Hand, Issue 177) I’d like to know why the number for the free 411 doesn’t seem to work. Can you please put the correct number in the coming week’s issue?

SMOOTH AS SYLK sylk.ny

DASSI LEVI RESPONDS: The number that was featured was discontinued in 2010. I apologize for the error and any inconvenience it may have caused. One current number for the free 411 is 1-800-FREE-411 (800373-3411). It can also be dialed with an 888 or 886 area code instead of 800. The service is sponsored by advertisements that are played at the beginning and end of each call.

(RE: Change is Needed, Inbox, Issue 177) I was appalled at the letter written by a mother who felt that schools should stop giving students Chanukah vacation, being that the girls are left without routine, which makes them unhappy. Interestingly, my memories of Chanukah vacation as a girl are the exact opposite of unhappy. In fact, the best memories I have are those of our vacation days. Yes, we were missing routine, but we were far from bored! My mother would take us on outings, play games with us, bake cookies together with us or even just spend the time making a gourmet supper with lively music playing in the background. Who, if not a mother, should be the one creating exciting, happy moments in a child’s life? These moments are the ones they will always remember! It is not the schools that need a change — it is the attitude that needs change. The attitude of those

who don’t know to appreciate precious time spent with family and the opportunity to impress upon their children that they are the most important thing in their parents’ lives, and that their mother is so happy to have an opportunity to do extra, out-of-routine activities with them. The warm feeling of a mother going out of her routine to spend time with her child and make her vacation an enjoyable one will stay with the child forever. It is an investment that is well worth it! As an aside, I’ll point out that as a teacher, I see the “structure” that girls have in school on Chanukah. The girls are not interested in learning and think that it is a time especially made for having fun and playing games. We teachers try our best to incorporate exciting activities into our lessons while keeping as much of a structure as possible. Doing that for a full week is not feasible since teachers are here to teach, and not to simply occupy the girls. Yes, Chanukah vacation is a necessary part of the school year, as it gives girls a chance to enjoy the time with their family. And when spent in the right way, with mothers who have the right attitude, it provides them with a boost to continue the school year positively. A Mother Who Is Also a Teacher

It is hard to formulate my words in response to the letter written about abolishing vacation. Should I begin by saying that this is your daughter, and that you have the responsibility of raising her? Or should I rather tell you, the tuition-paying

parent, about the low salaries teachers receive? Perhaps you didn’t realize that the days your child is exhausted and cranky at home, she would have acted the same in school. It is sad to think that there are mothers who want their children to spend as much time as possible away from home. Simply Saddened

It has also come to our attention that some physicians have begun to call topical steroids “antiinflammatory creams” in order to increase patient compliance. While steroids are not an enemy, there are very specific guidelines in regard to potency, length and area of use, and age of patient that most doctors are not well trained in, which has led to the epidemic of pseudoeczema. New State Guidelines Requiring Increased Secular Education Could Be Devastating to Yeshivos Recently released guidelines that would require all private schools throughout New York, including yeshivos, to offer students six or more hours per day of secular studies have sparked serious concern, prompting strong reactions all across the state. Hamodia reported that Commissioner MaryEllen Elia of the New York State Department of Education announced last month that the changes would require all of the state’s approximately 1,800 non-public schools to offer 72 minutes of math instruction per day, and a total of seven hours in English, social studies, science and math, with additional classes to be given in music, visual arts and other subjects. The commissioner’s use of the term “substantial equivalence” provides some amount of leeway, but it is unclear exactly how much or in what manner. Under the new guidelines, all private schools would be reviewed every five years by local public school officials to ensure that they are complying with safety laws and the new curriculum standards, with the results of those reviews sent to the state for further consideration. Schools who fail to comply with the new requirements would face loss of state funding, and students would be declared truant, a classification whose meaning remains unclear at this time. Responding to the commissioner’s new directive one week later, the Satmar Rebbe, Rabbi Aron Teitelbaum, spoke out forcefully, as reported on VIN News, telling the state to fix its failing public schools before attempting to make any changes to yeshivos. The Satmar Rebbe declared that he has no intention of following the new guidelines, saying, “We will sacrifice and stand up for our very existence so that we can educate our children and provide them with a Torah education.” Data obtained by The Jewish Press from the Department of Education shows that, in general, yeshivah students have been outperforming their public school counterparts on the New York State Regents examinations, with 19 of the top 20 private school av-

erage scores in the June 2016 English Language Arts Regents examination earned by yeshivos. Of those schools, two were Monsey area girls’ schools, with Bais Yaakov of Ramapo and Bais Yaakov of Monsey, whose students averaged 88.1 and 86.4 respectively, coming in well ahead of the Rockland public school average of 63.4. Similar results were seen in the June 2017 U.S. History and Government Regents examination, with students at Yeshiva Ohr Reuven earning an average grade of 97.1, the highest of all private schools in the state. Also scoring higher than an average grade of 90 were students at Bais Yaakov of Monsey, Bais Yaakov of Ramapo, Bais Yaakov D’Rav Hirsch, Yeshiva Shaarei Torah, Yeshiva Gedolah of South Monsey, Mesivta Bais Shraga and Yeshiva High School of Monsey, while Rockland County’s public school students earned an average score of 85. Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of America issued a call for extra Tehillim to be said during Mincha on Asara B’Teves in order to arouse rachamei Shamayim in the face of this threat to the yeshivah education system. And as of last weekend, more than 33,000 yeshivah parents signed a petition protesting the guidelines. Also concerned about the threat to their own schools, the superintendents of the state’s 500 Catholic schools announced their intention last week to boycott the new guidelines, saying that they posed a conflict of interest and gave public schools an unfair opportunity to undermine private schools.

Airmont Hit Again with Religious Discrimination Lawsuit For the second time in a month, the Village of Airmont has found itself the subject of a federal lawsuit alleging that zoning laws are being illegally applied to discriminate against Orthodox Jews. As previously reported in The Monsey View, the first lawsuit was filed by Congregation Yetev Lev of Monsey and a group of parents at the end of November, charging the village with using zoning laws and building inspectors to restrict the growth of the local Jewish community by attempting to thwart building plans at the Central UTA school campus on Cherry Lane. The 75-page claim also accused the Suffern school district with unfairly denying transportation and other state-mandated services to special needs students in the district. According to The Journal News, a second lawsuit filed against the village on December 10 charges Airmont officials with attempting to prevent shuls from holding services, stalling building permits for shuls, and handing out violations that included $1,000 fines per day and the possibility of imprisonment. Included in the 82-page claim are allegations that Rabbi David Ribiat has spent more than $40,000 in fees over a two-and-a-half-year period in an attempt to open an approved shul in Airmont and that Rabbi Moishe Berger, who has spent over $20,000 in fees for operating an unapproved shul in his home, may be facing a year in jail for his actions. Airmont officials have denied any allegations of wrongdoing, saying that all of its zoning, safety and building codes are enforced equally throughout the village. It has previously lost two religious discrimination lawsuits in the 1990s, leaving taxpayers holding the bag for several million dollars in legal fees and penalties. The First Liberty Institute, a non-profit legal group that protects religious liberties nationwide, is involved in the case, describing it as “the most blatant case of religious discrimination we’ve seen.” The group’s attorneys hope to prove that Airmont is continuing its decadeslong pattern of discrimination that denies residents their constitutionally protected right to freely practice their religion. “Thirty years of religious bigotry are enough,” said First Liberty’s Hiram Sasser. “The Orthodox Jewish community of Airmont just wants to be left alone to peacefully worship and coexist, but Airmont officials are openly hostile.”

Is The Weight Loss Problem Really A Weight Loss Problem? The problem is not the problem. The problem is the way you look at the problem.

You become your own prisoner.

The first couple of times I heard this statement I loved it because it sounds cool. It wasn't until recently that I truly understood the depth of the saying.

Having someone to help you see what is really true is something that you can not do on your own.

We as humans have an idea about what reality is. Unfortunately a lot of the time our view of what is real and what is really real are not the same.

The thing is, as humans, we have an ego.

Many people are under the impression that fat = unhealthy thereby making skinny = healthy (1+1=2). How does one remove fat? By going on a diet. How does one stick to a diet? What do you mean? You just do it!

When someone disagrees with you, especially on things you swear to be true, it is only natural that we argue back. To protect our ego we come up with 50 reason why our way of thinking is right and that the advice you’ve been given, although may be good, doesn't apply to you in your situation.

When we think this way it is very typical and quite obvious to see why we are having a hard time living and sustaining a healthy lifestyle.

This is very typical when it comes to family members. Family members are emotionally attached and are extremely invested in one another. It hurts to see your spouse or child eat foods that are fattening. We can’t help but tell them something.

With this type of mindset the way we become “healthy” is by going on a diet. At first, the diet we chose gives us some sort of result.

They know that cake is not good for them. The reason why they are having the cake is not because it is good for them. They are having it because they want it.

Once the results start slowing down and we only lose <1 pound a week the diet must not be working.

When we come along with our “helpful” comments it is only human to justify the action.

If that’s the case it makes sense to ditch the diet and try something else.

To help someone view the situation differently it takes skill. It takes practice.

Wait one moment, how do you know all of this? Who told you that weight loss is 21 lbs in 30 days? Who said that losing over a pound a week is what needs to be happening?

A good health coach would be able to work with you to help you see what is real.

Biologically speaking when you look at how the body works you can start to see that losing 0.5 - 1lbs a week is a fantastic outcome.

At the Smith System we make it a priority to get to know the client. To see them as they are.

Most people do not experience a 5 pound weight reduction every week. There may be weeks with no weight loss and even weeks with weight gain (gasp!).

The demands and commitments they have in their day. The stress levels they are dealing with.

Diving into human psychologic it’s clear that sayings like, “just doing it” or “all you need is a little bit of discipline” is a fairy tale. Especially with the high demanding stressful lives we lead.

We work together to build the lifestyle you only dream of having.

Discipline is a skill. Skills can be taught and need to be learned. In today’s society, eating healthy isn't just following a simple diet. In order to achieve long term results —I mean results that will last you a lifetime, YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR LIFESTYLE. But if you believe that dieting is the way to go; that you need to lose weight quickly first, you will be stuck on a yo-yo. When you see that losing 0.5-1lbs a week is great (it isn't enough to just know, you want to believe it to be true)— When you look at a scale as a device that shows you your progression in your diet instead of the end-all-and-be-all of you as a person you won't get completely discouraged by fluctuating numbers. You can understand that it isn't the diets fault; it isn't anyones fault. It is just an indication that what you are doing, at the moment, is not the right course of action. If you want to improve your result improve what you are doing day-to-day. But because your perception tells you, “No, weight loss is supposed to be following a diet and diets only work if I lose 3+ pounds a week,” then as soon as you lose < 3 pounds = automatic failure. This results in you becoming trapped in the vicious cycle of dieting.

The problem is not the problem but the way you look at the problem.

We don't just help each client see the truth we also give each client the tools and strategies they need to help build the life they want. When we learn a new thing or start a new diet we feel excited. Once we start to apply the techniques we see it isn't as glamorous as we thought, the newness fades away, that is about the time where we start dropping the ball. At the Smith System we make sure this never happens. Our one-on-one coaching session challenges our clients. We want to ensure that you will be doing everything you can to progress yourself forward. It isn't about making a perfect plan and then demanding that you change your life to fit the plan. It is about knowing what ultimate health looks like, seeing you as a person and bridging the gap between your reality and your goals. It is about teaching you how to be discipline and giving you an opportunity to practice discipline. It is about showing you how to adapt the right tools into your life. It is about being your support team helping you move forward and adjusting as life throws one challenge after another. It is about having the accountability to inspire you to do your very best! Does it sound like a lot of work? You bet! With the right coach and the right team in your corner this process of change can be made a little bit more enjoyable. It can be done with a little bit less friction. This is what a coach can do for you!

Oatmeal Goodies

For the gluten-free and for the rest of us, too BY: RIVKY WEISS PHOTO CREDIT: EPIC PORTRAITS 845.213.8865 Do you think of oatmeal only as a hot breakfast cereal for a cold winter morning? Oats are so much more than that! It’s a flavorpacked, naturally gluten-free, good-for-you grain. Its high fiber content makes it especially useful for the gluten-intolerant, being that many gluten-free flours have little of that good stuff, which all of us know we need for healthy functioning. Simply put, oatmeal equals snacking that satisfies mind and body in one delicious munch!

I adapted this from a recipe I’ve been making for years from the original Heimishe Kitchen cookbook. Because they have only oats, they do crumble a bit more, but at the rate they disappear (even within the gluten-eating population), it doesn’t seem like anyone minds.

Only-Oats Cookies

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

3 eggs ¾ cup oil ¾ cup (organic) sugar or brown sugar 1 tsp. vanilla extract ⅓ cup water 2 cups quick (1-minute) oats, well blended 2 cups quick (1-minute) oats ½ tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking powder Optional add-ins: chocolate chips, cinnamon, shredded coconut, craisins

76 / THE MONSEY VIEW

1. In a mixing bowl, beat eggs, oil and sugar. Add extract and water. 2. Mix oats with salt and baking powder. Add to bowl — along with any add-ins— and mix. Allow to stand (at least 15 minutes) for oatmeal to absorb liquid and hold together better after baking. 3. Preheat oven to 350°. Drop with spoon onto cookie sheet. Bake for about 25 minutes. Yields 35 cookies Note: This recipe doubles and triples easily.

These bars were created as a nutrient-rich, what-could-I-eatafter-school snack for a gluten-free family member. Millions of people wake up each morning to their cup of joe, relying on it to kickstart their day. Traversing continents, cultures and nationalities, there isn’t a country that doesn’t have an intense relationship with the bitter bean. And is it any surprise? Coffee is so much more than a drink. It is a culture, an economy, an art, a science — and has quite a history. Over the years, coffee and its health effects have been the object of countless studies. The findings ranged from “Stay away from coffee. It causes all kinds of ills,” to “Coffee is good for you. Drink up!” Here’s how the most famous beverage has been reported since the turn of the twentieth century.

EARLY 1900s: COFFEE STUNTS GROWTH As the coffee industry evolved, so did the negative beliefs (and myths) about it. There were reports in those years that coffee stunts the growth in children and is the cause behind ailments like nervousness, insomnia, heart palpitations and indigestion. The probable rationale behind it is the fact that the caffeine in coffee may prevent sleep if consumed at the wrong times, and a child needs proper sleep in order to grow.

1927: KEEP KIDS AWAY FROM COFFEE During this year, researchers interviewed school children about their coffee-consumption habits, and what came to light were facts they found “startling”: Most kids drank at least a cup of coffee a day, something that researchers decided were the reasons behind their lackluster scholastic achievements at school. At this time, children across the States were warned that drinking coffee would give them low grades.

1943: A SECOND SERVING OF COFFEE FOR $100 As World War II was raging in Europe, back on the homefront, instant coffee was being saved for the men on the front. Initially, the coffee was rationed in a manner that allotted one pound of coffee per five weeks for every person over the age of 15, then it was reduced to a pound every six weeks. Coffee shops would only sell customers one cup of coffee. One shop, though, offered a second cup for 100 bucks (the value of over $1,400 today!).

1970s: COFFEE CAUSES HEART DISEASE Various studies during these years pointed to a negative correlation between coffee and increased heart disease, one citing a 60 percent increased risk for heart attacks in coffee drinkers, and another a short-term rise in blood pressure.

2001: COFFEE INCREASES THE RISK OF CANCER A study researching coffee found a 20 percent increase in the risk of urinary tract cancer in coffee drinkers. Tea drinkers did not show this risk increase.

2007: COFFEE DECREASES CANCER RISKS Several analyses showed that drinking coffee prevents the risk of liver cancer, one finding that two black coffees daily decreases the risk by 43 percent.

2011: COFFEE CONSUMPTION REDUCES RISK OF STROKE A meta-analysis on the link of coffee and stroke risks found no negative association between the two, even showing a benefit when black coffee is drunk in moderation. Another study actually found coffee to have preventative effects in those at risk of strokes.

90 / THE MONSEY VIEW

2010: COFFEE CAUSES LUNG DISEASE A meta-analysis found a link between coffee and lung disease. However, it couldn’t rule out the fact that most participants smoked, too, and that it may have been that factor that was behind the uptick in lung disease in study participants.

2013: COFFEE REDUCES RISK OF HEART DISEASE A study of more than 1.2 million participants found that moderate coffee drinking seems to be associated with lower risk of heart disease. Additional large-scale studies found that coffee reduces mortality rates in general. In fact, in 2012, studies showed that one would have to drink as many as 10 cups daily for coffee to have a bad association with cardiovascular disease. Two studies conducted in 2013 also proved, like in 2007, that coffee reduces the risk of liver cancer.

UPGRADE YOUR COFFEE Bring the cafe experience into your own kitchen with a few quick tricks. LATTE: Steam milk; once it’s steamed, but not yet boiling, add instant coffee along with sweeteners and flavorings and stir. VANILLA: Add a sprinkling of vanilla sugar to your coffee

‫איהה‬ Sunday, Jan. 6 ‫פ בא‬

HAZELNUT: Praline paste does the trick. Stir well with hot coffee before adding milk. MOCHA: Add some cocoa to your coffee. May require more sugar than your regular coffee. MINT: For the lovers of this flavor, a bit of mint extract gives your coffee a refreshing kick. MELTED CHOCOLATE: This can be prepared either with coffee, or with steamed milk. Steam milk. Once steamed, turn off flame. Place 2-3 good-quality milk chocolate squares (and desired amount of instant coffee) into a cup, and pour hot milk over it. Stir. ICE CREAM: Out of fresh milk or just in the mood for a treat? Add a scoop or two of dairy ice cream to coffee instead of milk.

2015: COFFEE AND HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CAN GO TOGETHER According the the U.S. Department of Agriculture, at up to five cups daily (a maximum of 400mg of caffeine) “coffee can be incorporated into a healthy lifestyle,” and was shown to lower the risk of death from heart or neurological diseases. In this same year, though, the 2001 finding of coffee seeming to increase the risk for urinary tract cancer was proven once again by a meta-analysis. People with a risk factor are told to consider this.

2016: NO LINK BETWEEN COFFEE AND CANCERS

2017: COFFEE MORE LIKELY TO BENEFIT HEALTH THAN HARM

The effects of acrylamide, a chemical produced in the coffee-roasting process, is extensively studied, finding “no conclusive evidence for a carcinogenic effect of drinking coffee.”

Over 200 studies done on coffee concluded that three to four cups a day were found to lower the risk of liver disease; fatal strokes; some cancers; neurological, metabolic and liver disorders; and improve overall mortality rate.

2018: CALIFORNIA: LOS ANGELES JUDGE REQUIRES CANCERWARNING LABELS ON COFFEE During the roasting process of coffee, the chemical acrylamide is produced. Acrylamide is also present in foods like potato chips, french fries, breakfast cereal and toast — as well as cigarette smoke. There is little evidence though, that acrylamide in food causes cancer. Many establishments in California put up the warning signs (Starbucks was the first to do so), although health experts claim that there are no grounds for it since the studies that caused cancer in mice were done with very high doses of acrylamide.

THE OVERALL PICTURE So now that we spilled all the beans, what are we to take out of this? In the words of Dr. Frank Hu, chair of nutrition at Harvard’s University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health, “the overall picture is quite clear.” He says, “There is no long-term increased risk of major chronic disease, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease or even cancer,” when drinking coffee. Health experts at large say that coffee consumed in moderation is not only not harmful, but even has health benefits. So, drink up! However, there are few things to take in mind before guiltlessly indulging.

HEALTH PITFALLS OF ALL TIMES • Studies consider a “cup” of coffee 8 ounces, and not that 24-ounce cuppa you’re sipping as you read. • Coffee creamers and syrups and whip — and an overload of sugars and sweeteners — can add hundreds of calories to the beverage. These flavored coffees, cappuccinos, frappes, lattes, mochas, or whatever names they go by, should not be consumed on a daily, or even frequent, basis. • Mind what you have with your coffee. Calorie-laden pastries, chocolates or other sweets accompanying the coffee may tip your entire coffee consumption to the unhealthy side. • Caffeine may pose an issue with certain medications and exacerbate certain diseases. Consult your physician if you have reason to think coffee may not be right for you.

From Tonic to Trouble If Joseph Priestley, the scientist who first found a way to carbonate water, would see the tremendous variety of soft drinks on supermarket shelves today, would he be impressed at the tremendous impact his discovery had on today’s world, or dismayed at the vast amount of junk being imbibed by Americans every day? Chances are he’d be a little bit of both. Soft drinks, also known as carbonated drinks, have had a colorful history. There aren’t too many products that can claim they’ve been used as a medicinal tonic in early years — and then found themselves banned two centuries later. But since the scientists who first discovered methods of carbonating liquids were simply trying to replicate mineral water, there were no nutritional disadvantages at that point. On the contrary, until the early nineteenth century, drinking either natural or artificial mineral water was considered a

healthy habit, and it was also greatly promoted by the temperance movement, which was seeking to limit the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Over the next few decades, however, as sugar and flavorings were added to the carbonated drinks, soda gained popularity, and it was soon more appreciated as a refreshment than as a tonic. By the 1840s, there were more than 50 soft drink manufacturers, and the year 1851 saw more soft drink publicity: At the Great Exhibition in London, Schweppes was the official drinks supplier, and they sold over a million bottles of lemonade, ginger beer, seltzer water and soda water. Nowadays, a significant reason soft drinks have become such an issue nationally is that as unhealthy as they are, they’re cheap, and they’re an easy answer to sugar cravings. The result? Widespread obesity, as well as other weight-related health issues, including diabetes, elevated blood pressure, and an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Other problems that may de-

100 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 19, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

velop include dental decay, bone loss and a significantly higher risk of developing kidney stones. Those defending the soda industry claim that statistics on obesity can be blamed on the fact that people with poor healthy eating habits in general also consume large amount of soft drinks. Thus, they say that prevailing obesity should be blamed on their general lifestyle versus one particular item in their diet. Whatever the case, trends have shown that the more soda consumed, the greater the prevalence of obesity and accompanying health issues, and these numbers can never be denied.

A Declining Trend Today the soft drink trend is finally declining. Studies show that while the average American drank 45.5 gallons of soda in 2005, the average number five years later, in 2010, was 40.7 gallons — still a frightening number, but a change nonetheless. This change is due to the harmful effects seen in people all over the country — and all over the world. Many of these changes can probably be attributed to the discussion of soda taxes, which were implemented in many U.S. cities, and bans. And even while New York state’s proposed Soda Ban was officially repealed, the fact that this proposal — which would have limited the sales of many sugary drinks over 16 ounces in volume — was under discussion shows that the nation is paying attention to the harsh effects of drinking too many soft drinks. The past decade has also seen many changes to the school system in regard to the availability of soft drinks. The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 removed soft drinks from schools and urged schools that receive federal funding to provide healthier food choices to their students.

The Soft Drink Industry Unhealthy contents notwithstanding, soft drinks don’t seem to be going the way of the dodo anytime soon. On the contrary, the history and development of the soda industry, which has been a force ever since the mid-nineteenth century, reflect the trends of growing American businesses and the success of marketing. Today, the most popular soda, hands down, is Coca-Cola. While its taste and fizz is loved by consumers worldwide, Coca-Cola also remains a symbol of American culture, and it is this result of genius marketing that created this legendary drink. What, exactly, is behind the Coca-Cola empire?

A Brief History The original Coca-Cola recipe was formulated by John Pemberton in Georgia in 1885, though the drink was at first slated to be a coca wine. Pemberton, a Confederate colonel who’d been injured in the Civil War, had found himself addicted to morphine after recovering from his injuries, and he created this formula, which contained coca leaves, as an alternative to the drug. A year later, however, when Prohibition legislation passed in Georgia, Pemberton adjusted the formula and began selling this non-alcoholic version in a local pharmacy for 5 cents a glass. It was originally marketed as a patent medicine, or “brain and nerve tonic,” since it contained small amounts of cocaine as well as caffeine. Pemberton’s accountant, a Frank Robinson, is credited with coming up with the name Coca-Cola — for the cocaine leaf and caffeine-containing kola bean included in the formula — and he also designed the distinct, script logo containing the two loopy C’s. It was also Robinson’s idea to promote the drink by distributing free drink coupons and hanging posters all over the city, a clever move that THIS TICKET FOR A FREE quickly made this drink GLASS OF COCA-COLA WAS FIRST DISTRIBUTED very popular. IN 1888 TO HELP PROMOTE THE DRINK.

THE MONSEY VIEW / 101

The Beginning of a Tradition Over the next few years, ownership of the Coca-Cola Company transferred to Asa Candler, and as soon as he had complete ownership, Candler authorized an annual advertising budget of $11,000. While this number seems huge, it was actually a very modest beginning to Coca-Cola’s legendary advertising tactics. Candler also made some significant changes to the Coca-Cola formula at this time, which included doing away with most of the cocaine, and consequently, with its claims of having medicinal qualities. Then, in a brilliantly strategic move — both for the publicity and for intellectual property protection — Candler announced that he was the only person in possession of the “real” formula. Thus began the tradition of the “secret recipe.” But Candler didn’t stop there. Understanding the value of heavy advertising, he earmarked increasingly larger funds for advertising, and in

White Coke During World War II, former president Dwight D. Eisenhower, then the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, introduced Coca-Cola to Soviet Marshal Georgy Zhukov. Zhukov liked this new drink immensely, but since Coca-Cola was a sign of American imperialism, he was afraid that his drinking this soft drink would be reported in the newspapers. Zhukov, however, was determined to get hold of this drink, and he requested that a special production of Coca-Cola be manufactured and packaged to resemble vodka. This request was passed on to President Harry S Truman, whose staff, in turn, contacted the Coca-Cola Company with this unusual request. Not surprisingly, the Coca-Cola Company wasn’t going to turn down a request that came through the White House! They soon found a chemist who was able to remove the color from the drink, and this “White Coke” produced especially for Marshal Zhukov was then bottled in clear glass bottles with a red star in the middle. Remarkably, while other shipments entering Soviet territory normally took weeks to be cleared at the border, these Coca-Cola shipments went straight through without delay.

1901, the Coca-Cola Company’s advertising budget surpassed $100,000 for the first time. And the results were telling! Coca-Cola was evolving into a statement, a concept, and something much more than simply a nice, refreshing drink. Advertising campaigns hit the streets, one after another, until Coca-Cola was more a culture than a beverage. Who didn’t want a Coke? After all, “It’s the real thing,” ads promised. “Enjoy a glass of liquid laughter,” other ads announced. “Have a Coke and a smile!” Yet other ads proclaimed, “Where there’s Coke, there’s hospitality,” and a little catchy three-line ditty read, “Fifty million times a day | At home, at work or on the way | There’s nothing like a Coke.” And if someone wasn’t yet convinced, the ads kept on coming, ever changing. “The best friend thirst ever had,” they said in the summer. And in the winter? “Thirst knows no time nor season.” Ten more years later, the advertising budget had already increased tenfold again, reaching the milliondollar mark, and advertisements were all over. They were in calendars, painted on signs, printed on pencils and napkins, and were soon on billboards all over the country.

CHASDEI CHASHIE L’KALLAH A Legacy of Chesed Chasdei Chashie LKallah, in memory of Reb Zev and Chashie Weiss A”H, is not just another organization, rather, a glimpse into the personal story of a family along with their messages of faith, courage and the ability to build from their pain. R’ Zev and Chashie Weiss A”H home was built on foundations of Torah and Mitzvos. Their home was infused with Emunah, Bitachon while caring for every Yid. Rabbi Zev and Chashie Weiss’ mesiras nefesh for gemilas chasodim and tzedaka was legendary. That legend became desperately underscored when a serious illness suddenly and without warning struck both of them. Along with an abundance of tear-filled fervent tefilos to the Ribono Shel Olam, the Weiss children - six of whom were still living at home and unmarried - committed themselves to furthering their parents’ devotion to the needs of others by taking upon themselves the lofty mitzva of hachnosas kallah as a zechus for a refuah shelaima for both of their parents. Tragically, R’ Zev and Chashie, the pillars of the Weiss home, left this world in the prime of their lives, leaving a deep vacuum in the hearts of their family and in those that lovingly knew them. The legacy of their extraordinary ahavas yisroel and chesed, however, lives on in the activities of Chasdei Chashie L’Kallah. “Mazel Tov! My daughter became a kallah! I’m trying to feel the simcha - and although we can’t afford much, we are managing the best we can by getting the things she needs on sale - BUT BEDS DO NOT GO ON SALE! I realize this is something I cannot do on my own - Your Chasdei Chashie L’Kallah has provided the beds and lifted a lead piece off of our hearts! Thank you!” “The economic times speak for themselves. My husband and I both lost our jobs. Now with a kallah in the house, we did not know what to do!! By setting up the beds, dinette table and chairs, their once bare apartment will become a home that they will able to show for themselves! Thank you, Chasdei Chashie L’Kallah!” “Chasdei Chashie L’Kallah, how can I put into words the wonder that you have done? After notifying you about the x family, you wasted no time in responding and reacting, discreetly delivering beds and a beautiful dinette set to a new home that otherwise would have been empty. When the kallah set her eyes upon the furniture, her face literally shone with a refreshing new happiness. She and her chosson now share feelings of exuberance that up until that moment had been sorely lacking!” With utmost sensitivity, high quality mattresses, box springs, and in some cases, dinette sets, are distributed to hundreds of needy kallah’s each year. Working with little overhead and no paid employees, Chasdei Chashie L’Kallah’s dedicated volunteers work discreetly to do background checks and to ensure that the dignity of the organization’s recipients’ is rightfully preserved. Many of the times the couple does not even know that they are receiving this furniture from a Tzedaka, as they get to pick out the sets themselves. The radiant kallah’s joy knows no bounds! Who are Chasdei Chashie L’Kallah’s recipients? Chasdei Chashie L’Kallah’s recipients are your fellow yidden. They could be your friends or neighbors. They could even be your own relatives…The people who show a smile on the outside and greet you amiably as if they had not a care in the world, may be crumbling under the financial pressure of marrying off a child. This wig was created with red yarn.

Ribbon of two different widths and textures resulted in a dressy collar. I finished off the base with blue paint.

A piece from an old white shirt was used in creating this costume.

OLD MAN

I painted this base with white paint.

Some black fabric and four identical buttons were used for the suit.

A doll hat and doll glasses were the perfect size to fit this bottle.

For the beard and moustache, I cut a piece from a white fur strip to the right shape.

HILCHOS BORER | PART 2

There are three conditions one needs to follow in order to separate an ochel (food) and pesoles (garbage) mixture in a permissible manner: 1) take the ochel from the pesoles, and not the other way around; 2) take it only immediately before eating; and 3) use one’s hands and not a kli that helps in the separation process.1 These same rules apply to non-foods as well.2 In this article we will begin to address the first condition — removing the ochel from the pesoles. What is ochel and what is pesoles? When there is a mixture of garbage and food, then it is clear what is the ochel and what is the pesoles. When there are two kinds of foods, however, then the food one wants to eat at that time is considered the ochel and the one he doesn’t want to eat at that time is the pesoles.3 For example, if there is a bowl of colored jelly beans, and little Michoel decides he only wants to eat the blue ones, then all the other colors would be the pesoles, regardless of the fact that he really does like all the jelly beans but only wants the blue ones now. It would be muttar for Michoel to remove the blue jelly beans from the bowl to eat them immediately, but it would be assur for him to remove the other jelly beans

110 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 19, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

so that he would be left with a pile of blue jelly beans to eat, because that is considered taking the pesoles from the ochel. These same rules apply to non-foods as well;4 what one wants to use at that time is considered ochel, and what he doesn’t want to use at that time is now pesoles. Partial separation and splitting a mixture One is not allowed to take out even just one pesoles from ochel, even if he leaves over some pesoles. For example, Suri has a bowl of peanuts with peanut shells in front of her. It would be assur for her to pick out just some of the shells, and not all of them, regardless that she is still leaving a mixture of ochel and pesoles. Just by removing some of the pesoles, she is improving the mixture, and it is considered borer.5 Suri, however, would be allowed to take a bowl of peanuts mixed with their shells and split it into two bowls, even if she doesn’t want to eat it right away. In this case, she is not separating any ochel from pesoles, but is just splitting the mixture into two. Taking for someone else Kalman likes the olives from the salad and wants to eat one now, but Zalman doesn’t. Kalman asks Zalman to take an

olive out of the bowl so that Kalman can eat it immediately. Zalman, who is anyway looking for an excuse not to touch the olive, claims that it would be borer for him to pick it out from the salad, but Kalman argues, “No, no, dearest Zalman! It is muttar for you to pick out the olive even though you won’t be eating it because you are doing it for me, and for me it is considered ochel from pesoles!”6 In this case, Kalman would be right. Peeling fruits Sometimes it’s not so simple to take the ochel from pesoles, because the ochel is not accessible. An example of this case is when someone wants to eat a banana or an orange. The banana, which would be the ochel, is covered by its peel, the pesoles. In such a case, the halacha says one may peel it immediately before eating and this is still muttar, because there is no other way to get to the ochel and this is the way that it is eaten.7 However, in a case where it is not entirely covered by the peel, and one can get his hands on the ochel and take it out, one must do so. For example, if there is a pile of already separated lettuce leaves, with some spoiled lettuce leaves lying on top of fresh ones, one must take the good ones since they are accessible without removing the bad ones.8 The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacha-related questions, consult your rav for a psak. 1 Shulchan Aruch 319:1; see Shulchan Aruch HaRav 319:1 who explains that these three conditions constitute derech achilah, and therefore it is muttar. 2 See Taz 319:12; Shulchan Aruch HaRav 319:8; Mishnah Berurah 319:15; not like the Ohr Sameach, Shabbos 8:11, who holds there is no borer by keilim. 3 See Tosfos Shabbos 74a; see Biur Halacha siman 319 “umaniach” for the opinion of the Rambam.

See Taz 319:12; Shulchan Aruch HaRav 319:8; Mishnah Berurah 319:15; not like the Ohr Sameach, Shabbos 8:11, who holds there is no borer by keilim.

5 This is unlike the Yerushalmi brought in Biur Halacha 340:1 “umelaket.” See, though, Mishbetzos Zahav 319:13. 6 See Shulchan Aruch 319:1 and Mishnah Berurah 6 there. 7 See Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 321:19 and Biur Halacha “liklof” and Chazon Ish Orach Chaim 54:4; see also Biur Halacha 319:4 “misoch” where he brings another reason according to the Yam Shel Shlomo, but see the Chazon Ish (Orach Chaim 54:4) who argues on this reason.

Have you had your morning coffee or tea yet? If you were born in America, those two beverages are staples on any breakfast menu. Around the world there are drinks that are considered “regular” in their locales but would raise an eyebrow (or two) elsewhere.

COSTA RICA

HOLLAND

ECUADOR

Who needs coffee when you’ve got sugar-water? AGUA DULCE, literally translated as “sweetwater,” is made by dissolving unrefined sugarcane in hot water. This is a popular breakfast drink in Costa Rica, which is, ironically, a large producer of the world’s coffee…

Like licorice? Maybe you’d enjoy a cup of ANIJSMELK, which is a favorite in Holland. This is drink is made by soaking aniseed or anise sugar cubes in warm milk.

In what sounds like an awesome start to the day, oats are boiled together with brown sugar and orange and then strained for a drinkable oat-based breakfast called COLADA.

TIBET

MIDDLE EAST

Packed with healthy fat and calories, PO CHA provides essential energy for Tibetans who live in cold, high altitudes. It is made of black tea, yak butter, yak milk and salt. They say it’s an acquired taste. Feeling daring? Here’s a recipe: (Try it with cow’s milk and butter.)

Typically called TURKISH COFFEE, this beverage is actually popular all over the Middle East. Made of finely ground coffee, water and sometimes sugar all boiled together, Turkish coffee is traditionally “so thick even a water buffalo wouldn’t sink in it.” The grinds are consumed as part of the brew, causing the coffee to pack a powerful punch. Despite that, the teeny-weeny pots the coffee is brewed in are quite adorable. And watching a grown man clutching a doll-sized cup? Priceless.

• 4 cups water • 2 tea bags of black tea • ¼ tsp. salt • 2 T. butter • ½ cup whole milk Instructions: Steep tea bags in boiling water and add salt. Remove tea bags and pour in milk. Turn off flame and add butter. Blend with an immersion blender.

TEA RITUALS

CHINA

JAPAN

Tea’s early history was in China, where it was originally used in medicinal brews. Over time, though, tea evolved into an integral part of Chinese society. The Chinese take tea very seriously, with it featuring in various ceremonies.

Eventually, the Japanese discovered China’s jewel and brought tea back home to be cultivated there. Aside from the standard type of thin tea we are accustomed to, the Japanese created a dried tea powder, called MATCHA, which is the Turkish coffee of the tea world. Mixed with a bit of water, the thick brew is intensely flavorful and supposed to be very healthy. Matcha tea is now becoming a trend worldwide amongst tea connoisseurs.

The Gung Fu tea ceremony lasts anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes and involves multiple preparations of hot water, which is transferred between vessels to warm the tea cups before the tea is finally served. Before drinking, guests are expected to show appreciation for the smell and color of the tea.

While some of the Asian tea traditions appear to be only socially significant, many of the ceremonies are actually based in avoda zara, especially in Japan

As in China, tea ceremonies are taken seriously in Japan, with special huts being used to serve tea. Classes are offered for older children to learn the complicated rules of ceremonies.

In a Chinese marriage ceremony, the bride and groom prepare and serve tea for their new in-laws as a sign of respect and to thank them for the time and effort expended in raising their spouse.

BRITAIN The British have enjoyed tea since the 1600s, but it wasn’t until 1840 that the renowned British tea time came to be. That’s thanks to Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, who routinely found herself hungry around 4 or 5 in the afternoon. She began requesting tea, together with cakes and miniature sandwiches, and grew to love the ritual so much that she began inviting friend to dine with her. From there, tea time grew into an icon of the British way of life. December 19, 2018 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 115 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Story/ A Tear in the Pants, a Tear in the Heart “Nice new pants, Yankele!” “Thanks.” Yankele smiled, adjusting the belt on his new pants. “They’re new for me, but they first belonged to the children of Uncle Avrum. He’s not really our uncle, but what’s the difference? The main thing is that he sends us packages of clothing from time to time.” “We don’t have any cousins sending us clothes, so we buy them in Reb Shmiel’s store. Soon my brother Yehuda will have his bar mitzvah, and they’ve already bought me a beautiful suit!” said Kalman. “My mother never lets us go out with torn pants,” he added, winking at Yankele, as if to say, “Look at Benzion’s pants…” Benzion, sitting right across from them, on the low wall surrounding the shul, lowered his gaze. He got the hint and was deeply hurt. What did his “friends” think — that his mother was happy to send him out like that? But with Tatty

116 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 19, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

sick and unable to work, and with six hungry kids at home, who could think of “luxuries” like new clothes? Meanwhile, the shul emptied out. Tefillas Shabbos was over, and everyone passed in turn before the gaon and tzaddik Rav Dovid Yungreis, Rav of the Eidah Hachareidis, and wished him ah gutten Shabbos before hurrying home for the Shabbos seudah. Yankele and Kalman were also about to leave when they noticed that the Rav was not heading toward his own home, but in the opposite direction, to the street leading to their houses… “I wonder where he could be going now, before the seudah…” said Kalman. “Strange,” Yankele agreed. “But we can check it out. There aren’t many houses on our street. Hey, look! He’s gone into the yard of Moishele Friedman, the third grader!”

From behind the big bush at the corner — with growing astonishment — the two children watched what went on at the Friedmans’ door. THE head of the family opened the door and was shocked to find the gaon standing there. “Good Shabbos,” said Rav Dovid, with a big smile. “I’m looking for your dear son. I believe his name is Moishele. May I speak with him for a moment?” Now the father was even more mystified. The Rav wanted to speak with his seven-year-old? But, of course, he rushed to call the boy, who came to the door, flustered and bewildered. “Ah, here is the fine boy I’m looking for,” Rav Yungreis said. “I came to conciliate you, Moishele. After davening, when it was your turn to wish me ah gutten Shabbos, I was preoccupied with a halachic question that one of the mispallelim had asked, and therefore, I didn’t respond properly. So I came here now to wish you ah gutten Shabbos!” SHOCK. Silence behind the bush. Kalman and Yankele stood there, ashamed. They looked at each other and could barely get a word out. “The Rav… walked all the way here… to apologize to a little boy for a possible trace of an insult,” Yankele finally said. With tears in his eyes, Kalman continued, “And we… we really insulted poor Benzion… but it didn’t even occur to us to ask his forgiveness…” Rav Dovid walked homeward, leaving behind him two boys who had just learned a powerful lesson in bein adam l’chaveiro, a lesson they would never ever forget. (Based on a story in the book Otzroseihem Amalei)

Ask the Rav/ Seats for the Class Trip By: Harav Hagaon R’ Menachem Mendel Fuchs, Shlit”a Moreh Tzedek of the Eidah Hachareidis, Rav Kiryat Shomrei Hachomos, Ramot, and Rav of Mishmeres Hasholom

Question Before the annual class trip, one of my classmates, Toby*, told me that this time she’s not planning to sit next to her long-time good friend Yitty* on the bus as always, but rather next to Zissy*, a different girl she recently became friendly with. Out of concern that Yitty may end up sitting alone, I went over and told her what I’d heard, so that she could arrange a different seatmate in advance. I wanted to ask — was that the proper thing to do?

Answer The questioner did not specify how she explained to Yitty the fact that Toby would not be sitting next to her on the bus. We will present two possibilities: a. If the questioner explained that Toby has become close with Zissy instead of her, implying that Toby is planning to abandon her friendship with Yitty — she is guilty of rechilus. b. If she explained that Toby wants to befriend and boost Zissy, and that’s why she’d be sitting next to her on the bus, she was not guilty of actual rechilus, but still did not behave properly, because this, too, apparently aroused concern and suspicion in the heart of the old friend, Yitty. True, it is evident from the words of the questioner that she wanted to do a mitzvah — to make sure that Yitty won’t have to sit alone — and not chalilah to start a fight. Nevertheless, she should have done so in coordination with Toby and found the best way to do it so as to avert suspicion and ill-will between the two friends. There is good reason for the Chofetz Chaim warning us to put in much thought and deliberation before saying lashon hara or rechilus l’to’eles (for a constructive purpose)! (In the event that the facts became known to the questioner only at the last minute, and she didn’t have time to think and plan out and explain, then one can understand her conduct.) Therefore, the questioner should do teshuvah for what she did, and if she finds out that the words reached the girl she spoke about and caused her pain, then she must also appease her — apologize and explain that she’d meant well and was wrong in not seeking advice in advance regarding how to go about it.

THROUGH A LENS OF ZECHUS/ The Mischievous Pencil Case I love the first day of school! All the kids come early with eager smiles on their faces. The books and notebooks are covered in shiny, new book covers. The pencil cases are full of sharpened pencils and clean erasers. The book bags are neat and orderly, with no wrinkled papers… no plastic bags holding the moldy remains of sandwiches… That’s why I was so upset by what happened with my seatmate, Yechiel Schwartz. I pulled out a sharpened pencil from my new pencil case to do the Mishnayos worksheet, and — would you believe it! — Yechiel put his hand in my pencil case, and without asking permission, pulled out a pencil for himself, too, and started writing! Then, he rummaged in the second compartment, looking for an eraser. And when the rebbi asked us to highlight a line in yellow, he was “kind enough” to say that soon he’d finish using the highlighter and give it to me… Tell me, was that a chutzpah or wasn’t it??? I thought to myself, “I’m not stingy. I’d be happy to lend Yechiel school supplies, especially since I have a full pencil case today. But what kind of way is this to behave? Is it so hard to ask?” Only at the end of the lesson, when I bent down to pull out my sandwich from the book bag did I realize what had happened — My new pencil case was there, precisely where I had put it yesterday. And the pencil case on the desk — the one we’d both used for the entire lesson? It was Yechiel’s! He’d also bought his school supplies at the discounted sale in the neighborhood, choosing the same items I did. You guessed it! The one who’d used items that weren’t his — again and again, without even asking permission — was none other than myself!

How simple it appears, when you know the other side,
