Our kids had a great time making the keychains from Craft It!’s article, and they promised to be precious, but Mommy didn't have the instructions in front of her and come to find out-100 degrees really makes a difference! (I thought the oven was supposed to be on 400 for baking, but seems it was only supposed to be on 300!) Well, the crispy, over-done (burnt!) keychains were a good lesson in teaching us to follow directions! Thanks for a nice activity, and thankfully I bought enough Sculpey clay to make a less burnt version another time! An Avid Reader

CONQUERING THE PLAYROOM CLUTTER - DOWN TO A SCIENCE

Thank you for a great magazine. Regarding playroom organization tips, I researched a lot when I set ours up about 1.5 years ago and, baruch Hashem, have maintained seder due to some of the following ideas: (My seven children range from a little baby to 11.5 ke”h.) • Toy closet with open bins for younger kids’ toys • Open shelves or large bins for big trucks • The main thing that eliminated mess potential was the idea to discard all game and puzzle boxes and transferring them to: • Little plastic draws for card games • Medium and large plastic draws for all types of board

games • Puzzles and matching games, lotto etc. were each placed in a ziploc bag (the ones with the red zip that kids can open and close) with game front cover cut out and placed in the bag too. All bags placed in big closed bins. • All drawers and bins clearly labeled with color-coded labels (younger kids’ games/older kids’ games...) • The older kids’ game drawers are kept in a closet on a high shelf, but they can remove one drawer at a time when they want to play that game without toppling a pile of game boxes. And when a piece shows up around the house it's really easy to return it to its correct labeled drawer. • We used the deep plastic drawers for lego structures that older kids wanted to keep and not have destroyed by little hands. • To make the room look warm and lively, I painted a wall mural with my kids. I outlined it in pencil, and they painted it al. I then outlined and straightened it all. I used regular acrylic paints. I hope this can help others. S.T.

I’m following along the series by Suri Israel closely and find the information very interesting and enjoyable to read and to look at. After analyzing her plans, she seems to be building her “dream house” on the amount of footage that 95% of Monsey residents do not come close to, and many of the ideas are really not realistic for a regular home. plans, the homes she talks of are over 5,000 square feet. How realistic is that? The deck alone is 38 feet wide. Being that this is for Monsey residents, who for the most part do not live in such stately, spacious homes, perhaps she can feature ideas geared for “regular homes” or at least not

PASSAIC TRAGEDY IS FELT IN MONSEY It was only two hours to candle-lighting when my husband came running through the door, intense worry etched upon his face. “A Passaic girl is missing,” he told me. “They just announced that any Chaverim member able to join the search should be to ready to head out to New Jersey in a half hour.” Instantly, my stomach began turning somersaults, thinking of Leiby Kletzky a"h- terrified for the missing child, terrified for the parents, terrified for Klal Yisroel. “Go,” I told him. “Just run and take a shower before you leave- you won’t be back before Shabbos begins.” I didn’t even know if he would be home before Motzei Shabbos, but what choice did I have? A life was at stake. I packed him up a plate of steaming kugel while trying to hold my tears in check. Quickly I ran through the house, finishing the last few jobs before Shabbos arrived, holding down the fort alone. My little children asked me where Tatty was, and I told them that he went to find a girl who is lost, because he is a Chaverim member. They understood, because they know how special Chaverim is; they

see the chesed that their father performs every day. The hours ticked by while the Shabbos candles burned brightly. Inside the warmth of home, the children slept snugly in bed, and I tried to distract myself by reading, but it was no use. My stomach churned with nervousness, my brain with restlessness. Where was my husband? Did he bring a coat? Was he warm enough? Did he have food to eat? And what about that precious yiddishe girlwas she warm, fed, and safe? How long would it take to find herwould we ever? I knew it was a serious search. Information had trickled in minutes before the zman when my husband had called one last time to check how I was managing alone. The girl in question was in her twenties and had been missing for almost 24 hours. Chaverim, Shomrim, and Hatzalah members from across New York and New Jersey had shown up for the search- fearing the worst, while praying for the best. Volunteers scoured the entire area of Passaic, inch by inch, trying desperately to find signs of the missing girl. Finally, two of our own Chaverim of Rockland members found the clue that led to the painful conclusion of the search. It is with a heavy heart that I write these words, feeling the agony of a family that is waking up this week to a void where their beloved daughter once stood. We are devastated by the the loss of one of our precious yiddishe kinder, Devorah Stubin a”h. May her family be comforted amongst the other mourners of Zion and Yerushalayim. WeighSmarter out getting too scientific, it’s important to know that fish oil contains forms of fat called EPA and DHA, which are extremely important for brain and nerve function. Although flaxseed contains omega-3 fatty acids as well, it’s of a different form, called ALA, of which the body doesn’t need as much. So, a tablespoon of flaxseed oil, or some flaxseed or chia seeds sprinkled on your yogurt, or a slice of flax meal bread, is enough to get you the ALA you need. But I want to stress that some of you may be confused in thinking that you’re getting your daily dose of omega-3 by using flax or chia, and that it’s important to distinguish ALA from EPA and DHA. You’ll need to consume fish and fish oil in order to fulfill your EPA and DHA requirements.

Balancing Out High Quantities of Omega-6 What’s the Solution? You now know that you probably have an overabundance of omega-6 in your body. One way to counteract that is to reduce your consumption of oils and processed foods that contain omega-6, which I wrote about last week. Now today I want to offer the ultimate solution. Aside from curbing your intake of omega-6, you’ll also want to focus on finding balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. The ideal ratio is 1:1, and certainly no higher than 1:5.

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS: The best and most obvious way to balance out your omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is to add omega-3 to your daily food intake. There are some foods that are in fact sources of omega-3, but because your omega-6 overload is so extreme, the sources of omega-3 may not be enough to counteract it. Consequently, it’s extremely important that you incorporate a potent omega-3 supplement – specifically from fish oil – into your daily routine. With-

Do you ever stop and appreciate the many gifts we tend to take for granted? Our eyesight, for example. Vision is something that enhances our life so much, yet we tend not to think about it too often. What about our ability to walk, for those who can? Or our ability to breathe? Anyone who has cared for a person on a respirator can testify to the miracle of every breath. There is another gift we tend to take for granted: our bechira. Our bechira is a precious gift from Hashem, and yet we use it so often that it doesn't even feel like a gift. It feels like a part of ourselves, like our ability to see. But, like our ability to see, Hashem can take it away. Many people are not aware that this can happen, assuming that only physical attributes can be taken away, but it is one of the lessons we learn from Parshas Beshalach and the entire story of yetzias Mitzrayim. When Hashem hardened Paroh’s heart, He was taking away Paroh’s bechira to prevent him from doing teshuva. The Rambam, in Hilchos Teshuva (Perek 6, Halacha 3) writes: “A person may commit a great aveira or many aveiros causing the judgment rendered before the True Judge to be that the retribution to this transgressor

for these sins which he willfully and consciously committed is that his teshuva will be held back.” Further on, the Rambam explains that Hashem hardened Paroh’s heart “to make known to all the inhabitants of the world that when HaKadosh Baruch Hu withholds teshuva from a

Our bechira is a precious gift from Hashem, and yet we use it so often that it doesn't even feel like a gift. sinner; he cannot repent, but he will die in the wickedness that he initially committed willfully.” In other words, if a person willfully chooses to do an aveira repeatedly, or even just once if it is a very serious one, then that person might find himself unable to do teshuva for that aveira. He has lost his bechira in regards to this aveira. The Rambam cites this week’s parsha as one of the sources for this: “For these reasons, it is written in the Torah (Shemos 14:4) ‘I will harden Paroh's heart.’ Since he began

to sin on his own initiative and caused hardships to the b’nei Yisrael who dwelled in his land, as it states: ‘Come, let us deal wisely with them,’ judgment obligated that he be prevented from repenting so that he would suffer retribution. Therefore, HaKadosh Baruch Hu hardened his heart.” So, even though Paroh acted without bechira because Hashem had hardened his heart, he was still held accountable and punished. Paroh lost his bechira because he had freely chosen, again and again, to harden his own heart. The Torah tells us that Paroh hardened his heart when Moshe Rabbeinu first came before Paroh to ask for the release of the b’nei Yisrael, and that he hardened his heart after each of the first five makkos. Only then do we see that Hashem hardened Paroh’s heart. Paroh had been given more than enough opportunities to choose better, yet he consistently made the same wrong choice. The loss of his bechira, then, was his own fault, so it was fair that he continued to be held accountable even when he was no longer making the choice consciously. Nobody is perfect, and we all have areas of weakness. We are in this world to struggle, to “turn from evil and do good.” (Tehillim



HAVE IT DONE RIGHT. 34:15) As long as we continue to fight our yetzer hara, our bechira is safe. But if we ever cross the line from regretted failures to hardened habits – from weakly caving in to willfully choosing sin – then we may have placed ourselves in a teshuva trap. We have placed ourselves at risk of having our bechira in this area taken away from us, and then we might not ever be able to do teshuva. Perhaps this is one reason why we are admonished not to do an aveira now thinking to do teshuva later.

If we ever cross the line from regretted failures to hardened habits – from weakly caving in to willfully choosing sin – then we may have placed ourselves in a teshuva trap. We should not think that such a thing could happen only to Paroh. The Rambam brings down in Halacha 4 that even great navi’im and tzaddikim, like David HaMelech, would daven to Hashem that they not find themselves in this situation. If a person suspects he may have lost his ability to do teshuva, is there no hope? The Gate of Teshuva may then be closed, but the Gate of Tears is always open. We can always cry and beg Hashem to save us from our aveiros. Of course, prevention is the best cure: let us be careful not to put ourselves in that situation to begin with.

One may rinse them enough so that they should not have an unpleasant smell on Shabbos. If one will be using the room where the dishes are, then it is likewise muttar.

What is the best way to wipe a spill on Shabbos? If it's a clear liquid, the ideal way is to throw a used or white towel on the spill and let it absorb the spill, but not to wipe with it. One should put enough towels, so that they won't get wet enough to drip when picked up. One may then kick away the towel with one's foot. One should not use fancy towels that one would typically wash as soon as they become soiled. If the spill is colored, one can likewise use regular towels. THE REVIVAL OF SECOND-HAND ROSE

In these financially difficult times, even with the economy improving, it still behooves us to be prudent and watch our pennies. Laya tells us how. My maternal grandmother landed on the shores of America in the late 1890s when she was just a little girl. Bubby Gordon was feisty and smart—qualities which, years later, helped her survive The Great Depression. When necessity demanded that she develop thrift, she did so with determination and spirit, while raising her large family on a tight budget. My American-born mother already had thrift in her DNA,

in the snazzy section of town was nothing short of an adventure. One of the chesed organizations received clothing from abroad and it was real quality. Nothing “Made in Israel” could compare to the Carters pajamas for the babies or the wash-andwear shirts that you could wash and then actually wear. At one point, Chaya - my then teenaged daughter - caught the secondhand “thrift” bug, and she and her friend would look forward to their occasional day off from school just so they could pay a visit to the second-hand shop and “check things out.” One day, Chaya came home describing a lovely dress she had discovered on her latest foray to the Carmel. “So, where’s the dress?” I wondered aloud. “I didn’t buy it,” she confessed rather ruefully. “It was just too expensive - even for a thrift shop.” I was proud of her: a) for willingness to wear second-hand clothes to begin with, and b) for being so prudent when it came to spending her money. I told her that I would go back, and if the dress was still there, I would purchase it for her. When I got to the shop, I had no problem spotting the dress. It was still there, and it was truly beautiful. Going to pay, I overheard the volunteer salesladies whispering, “What a shame. The pretty blond girl who was here this morning looked so good in that dress - it’s made for her! And now,” they sighed, “it’s being sold.” “Don’t worry,” I assured them.

I always thought I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth. Did it matter if it was second-hand? having inherited her mother’s penchant for it. In fact, my mother was the epitome of histapkus b’muat, being satisfied with less; whether it was in Kelm, Lithuania as a young bride, back home in America raising us children, or still later, when she and my father moved to Yershalayim, settling in Kiryat Matersdorf in the early days of its development. As long as an item was serviceable, my Mother never minded that others may consider it too outdated to use or too old-fashioned to wear. Thus she lived her entire life, free from the pressures of “keeping up” with anybody. I always thought I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth. Did it matter if it was second-hand? For as long as I can remember, I loved a bargain. After marriage, when my own growing family moved to Eretz Yisroel and settled in Haifa, going up Mount Carmel to the second-hand thrift shop located

“I am her mother; the blond girl will have the dress!” Indeed, the dress was such a good buy that it lasted for years, going through numerous transformations. The bottom part eventually became a skirt. The top part became a vest… and when Chaya got married and had children, she fashioned them into a splendid outfit for her young son. Years later, when we moved to Chazor Haglilit, I didn’t have to purchase my dresses in second-hand thrift shops, baruch Hashem. The kids were all married and it was only my husband and I at home. My wardrobe needs were minimal. For chasunos of the grandchildren, I had two dressy outfits in my closet which I have been alternating for the past ten (!) years. (Shades of Rebbetzin Elyashiv, who wore the same dress to all weddings! When asked why she doesn’t get a new one since her eineklach were beginning to get married, she replied with a smile, “If I change my dress now, how will people recognize me?”) So, actually, it’s been years now since I’ve set foot into any

thrift shop… But was my love for bargains over and done with, or was it just lying dormant somewhere in the recesses of my soul… yearning to resurface? Well, one day, I received a notice that the annual chesed sale of second-hand clothing for all the family was coming to our small town. The sale was being held in a local schoolhouse one evening. Imagine, everything for 10-20 shekels or less! Excitedly, I marked down the event in my daily planner and was delighted when the big day finally arrived. That morning, while I was going on an errand to town, a car pulled over, asking for directions to the schoolhouse. “Are you by any chance bringing clothing for tonight’s sale?” I blurted out. When they said that indeed they were, my hopes sagged. The alte shmattes spilling out of the cartons on their back seat were far from the second-hand stuff of my dreams. Neverthe-

less, undeterred, I set out that evening for the classroomcum-store, with my hopes high. I was too embarrassed, however, to be an early-bird, but not to worry - by the time I arrived, a half hour after the opening, the hall was already packed. I had 60 shekels (about $15.00) in my purse, figuring that if I found one or two items (that would total 20-40 shekels) I would consider myself lucky. Well, folks this is what I found: * A “Chanel” wedding/sheva brachos suit in brand-new condition for NIS 20! Only they spelled Chanel wrong – the label said “Chantal”! Admittedly, the suit is a bit matronly, but for 20 shekels I don't mind (looking matronly, that is). The jacket is black (what else?) with machine-embroidered white flowers on the skirt, and it’s scattered with sequins throughout. With different buttons, I believed the look could be somewhat updated. The skirt was just the right length! What Siyatta Dishmaya that it was made for someone short like me. * A brown lace chasuna skirt which matches the brown chasuna jacket I already own. There was something a bit wrong at the hem. Hmmm… I'd have to fix it. * An adorable Pollyanna print dress for one of my granddaughters for 10 shekels. “If my daughter doesn't like it or if she thinks the red is too brash, she can always make a throw pillow out of the flower-patterned fabric,” I thought to myself. A word of caution—never buy second-

h a n d stuff for your daughter-in-law unless she asks for it. If you do— you’re asking for it! * A cotton housecoat. Its previous owner must have been a short lady who had elongated arms! I only had to have the sleeves shortened on this one. * Five shekels for a brandnew Motherwear (with a name like “Motherwear” what could be bad?) faux-suede baby blue pants for a 6 month old. Since it's new, I can get away with giving it to one of my newborn greatgrandsons. He won’t know where it came from, that’s for sure. There were plenty more items for sale but these five were enough for one shopping spree, I decided. I mean, even for bargains, there’s histapkus b’muat! But, I tell you, it’s not only the money. It’s the principle of the matter, if you know what I mean. Especially if you come from a long line of principled women, like I do. Indeed, from their exalted places in Gan Eden, I know my ancestors are certainly kvelling. Following a colorful career in public relations/fundraising, Laya translated several books most recently a biography for teens on Rebbetzin Batsheva Kanievsky, “The Rebbetzin Loved Me!” followed by “Rav Elyashiv”. Tu B’shvat Fare Although this Yom Tov is one with minimal fanfare, let’s prioritize and cash into its power. May we be zoche to a fruitful year with bountiful blessings for us and all of Klal Yisroel. Since I find that the total celebration ends up being one family meal, I try to incorporate fruits and the shivas haminim into the main dishes, rather than wait for dessert. We usually wash for bread with olive spread, serve a soup with barley, and a meat with cooked fruit.

Although you may be tempted to skip the boiling and rinsing process, do not! It will result in a bitter taste.

2 esrogim 2 quince apples

2 c. sugar 2 c. water

Wash esrog very well and cut away any bruises or blemishes. Slice thinly and remove all seeds. Place slices in a 3-quart pot. Cover with water. Bring to a boil and rinse. Repeat this process for a total of seven times. Add the rest of the ingredients to the pot and allow to simmer on a low flame for approximately 4 hours. Note: If using only 1 esrog, increase water to 1 ¼ cup and reduce cooking time.

If your esrog is still soaking somewhere in the back of the fridge, waiting to be turned into a delicacy, then this recipe, with its “alte heim flavor” is definitely for you. 60

Slice onion and place in a heated chicken fryer with garlic, oil, and honey. Allow to saute for 5-10 minutes. Add chicken, skin side up. Pour the rest of the ingredients over the chicken and arrange orange slices on top. Sprinkle paprika over chicken. Cook on low flame for 2-2 ½ hours.

This tangy sauce works well over any sliced and pickled meat. Delicious for any time of year, its fruitiness, and the fact that it includes one of the shivas haminim, make it especially appropriate for Tu B’shvat.

TU B’SHVAT FRUIT SALAD WITH LEMON POPPY SEED DRESSING Normally I always think of fruit salads as a summer side dish, but there’s still a lot of fruit in season during winter, so why not take advantage of that and make a delicious Tu B’shvat fruit salad? Just like any fruit salad, this is so easy to make, and it adds so much gorgeous natural color to your table. This is the first time I’ve added pomegranate arils to a fruit salad, and I absolutely loved it! I mean, when you have four large pomegranates in your fridge you had better put them to good use, right? When they are $1 each, you just don’t walk past that without grabbing a bunch. One thing I love about this time of year are all the oranges and mandarins that are in season – and that scent! I also love the fact that I don’t have to peel the mandarins for my kids (call me lazy); it’s so easy to peel, even a three-year-old can do it. For make-ahead with this salad, you can peel the mandarins a day in advance, as well as seeding the pomegranate, and peeling and dicing the kiwi (just store them in the fridge). But for the bananas and apples, I’d definitely recommend waiting until you’re just about ready to serve it to begin dicing those. This recipe is enough for a small crowd, but it can definitely be scaled down if you want to make it for a smaller number of people for dinner (I loved it so much that I made a 1/4 of the recipe for lunch the next day). And just like any fruit salad, this is a versatile recipe. You can swap out the fruits for others you may have on hand–like pears, tangerines, mangos, pineapple, etc. I love the way the fruit pairs with the sweet and slightly tart lemon poppy seed dressing in this fruit salad. And, of course, I can’t get enough of all the vibrant flavors of the fruits used here. Those pomegranate arils are always bound to do good things! What’s not to love about this delicious fruit salad? There’s just so much goodness no one will be able to resist at your Tu B’Shvat seudah!

3 T. fresh lemon juice 3 T. granulated sugar 1/4 cup olive oil (optional)

1/4 cup vegetable oil (optional) 3 T. honey 2 tsp poppy seeds

8 mandarin oranges, peeled and segmented 4 apples (preferably 2 gala and 2 golden delicious) 4 ripe kiwis, peeled and diced

4 bananas, peeled and diced 1 1/2 cup pomegranate arils (from about 1 large pomegranate)

Directions For the dressing: In a mixing bowl or jar whisk together lemon juice and sugar until sugar has dissolved. Mix in olive oil, vegetable oil and honey until well blended. Stir in poppy seeds. Oven-Drying Fruits On Tu B’Shvat and the months following, enjoy nature’s candy with this great do-ityourself method. No need for dehydrators or drying cabinets; your oven will do. SUPPLIES: Oven, parchment paper, sheet pans, and fruits of your choice This method in fruit drying works by heating the fruit at a low temperature, to allow just the right amount of moisture evaporation to prevent bacterial growth. INSTRUCTIONS • Select ripe or just overly ripe fruits. • Wash well, using cold water. • Remove blemishes, stems, and pits. • Cut and slice the fruits evenly (for even drying). • This is not a must, but some fruits (specifically peaches, nectarines, and apple) dry better sans skin. • For the best looking dried fruit with color intact, soak in lemon juice and water for ten minutes, drain, and blot dry with a lint-free towel. • Preheat oven to 145 degrees Fahrenheit, us-

ing 10-15 degrees lower temperature for thinly sliced fruits, and a little higher heat for whole berries. Arrange fruits on a lined sheet pan in a single layer. Place fruit in oven. Rotate fruit every two hours, so that the heat should get distributed all over. When dried fruit feels like leather, yet is still pliable, remove from oven. Enjoy!

How long do fruits need to dry for? 6 hours

8-10 hours Tip:

If you’d like to preserve your dried fruits to be enjoyed for the next few months, they should be cured. When the food is removed from the oven it should be placed into a glass or plastic container. Leave the container open for about 5 days, so that any moisture left should evaporate, shaking the container once a day to move the fruit around. After 5 days, seal the container and the fruit can be used for about ten months.

To easily remove fruit skin, draw a small X at the base of the fruit with a paring knife, dunk into boiling water for thirty seconds, and then into ice cold water. The skins will slip right off.

Tip:

To cut down on about two hours of baking time, place a cooling rack on top of the pan you are using, and let the fruit bake on it. This will allow the heat to reach all sides of the fruit, causing it to dry faster.

Chocolate-dipped fruits Chocolate dipping is always a delightful and delicious activity for children and for the young at heart. Prepare dipping plates for each participant, and let them slice up their Tu Bâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;shvat fruits, assembling them on skewers or wooden picks. These pretty bamboo picks are available in local groceries and party good shops. Alternatively, use a chocolate fountain where children can coat their exotic fruits in chocolaty goodness.

Fruit Pops Even in the winter cold, frozen treats have a special allure. Throw some chunks of fruit of your choice into ices molds and fill the empty space with water, fruit juice, or a mix of the two. A sweeter option is to fill the space with a jello mix, prepared according to package instructions. These are as gorgeous as they are delicious.

Crepe Desserts Crepes are trending as a hot dessert item. Use your regular cheese crepe recipe, substituting any dairy products for their non-dairy alternatives if this will be used to end a fleishig meal in style. Spread a thin layer of ice cream, chocolate spread, or whip on the crepe, top with fruits, roll up and enjoy this delicious dessert.

These sushi ice cream confections were created with chocolate crepes, which were cooked on a rectangle griddle. An ice cream and whip mixture was spread on the crepe, and then topped with mango and kiwi cubes, after which it was all rolled up, shaped into a pyramid, and sliced. As you can see in the second image, they can also be rolled into a tube and sliced.

Yeshiva of Spring Valley Girls Turn Out for

Mega Challah Bake By: Sandy Eller There were sticky hands and flour-smudged faces at Yeshiva of Spring Valley’s MotherDaughter Challah Bake, part of the school’s Shabbos Project, one of several special activities that are part of the theme of the year, “Kedoshim Tihiyu.” 700 girls took part in the massive event, which was split over two nights, in order to accommodate all of the students and their mothers. Grades 1 through 4 returned excitedly to school on Wednesday night, January 7th, eager to stick their hands into their mixing bowls and turn the pre-measured ingredients into challah dough, as Mrs. Ayala Berney, mena-

heles of Bais Yaakov of Ramapo, explained how the various challah components mirror the con-

nection between the body and the neshama. Students in grades 5 through 8 had their turn the next night, enjoying Mrs. Miriam Lapides’ heartwarming stories about Shabbos as they indulged in a hands-on experience designed to enhance their appreciation for kedushas Shabbos. Commemorative black and pink aprons were distributed to each student, and emotions ran high on both nights as smiling students worked with their mothers, many of who confessed to being teary eyed as they uttered private tefilos after hafrashas challah was performed for the entire group. The songs that rang out through the room ranged from the poignant to the jubilant, and attendees commented on the palpable sense of kedusha that permeated the room. Every girl went home with her own hand-braided challah, ready to be baked for Shabbos and a beautiful CD of Shabbos songs, with laminated hafrashas challah cards distributed to the mothers. The Shabbos Project also included a schoolwide Cholent Challenge and Kugel Klub, a special focus on davening in Shul and a pair of gala Motzei Shabbos Melava Malkas for both the younger and older grades. INTRODUCTION: How many bedrooms does your house need? The answer to that question depends on the size of your family and the number of guests you anticipate having. When building a house, it is always advisable to think ahead about your future needs. Plan for a minimum of four bedrooms, because if you choose to sell your house down the road, having less than four bedrooms can prove to be a liability. Allow space for a minimum of two bathrooms near your bedrooms, which includes a dedicated master bathroom. It you have more than four bedrooms, try to allow for a third bathroom if at all possible to prevent family members from intruding on the privacy of your master bathroom.

MASTER BEDROOM A master bedroom could be as small as 13 feet by 13 feet and as large as 15 by 20 feet, depending on how you plan on using the space. Try to minimize the amount of furniture in the room to keep things airy and uncluttered. If you have the space, a sitting area or porch are both great additions to the master bedroom. Putting your closet and bathroom away from the sleeping area allows you to use the facilities and get dressed without disturbing a sleeping spouse. A baby nook off the master bedroom area is extremely practical in your childbearing years. When your little ones get older, the room can easily be converted into a small exercise room or a private home office.

BEDROOMS Bedrooms don’t have to be overly large, but they should have adequate space for their intended occupants. A nice size bedroom can range anywhere from 10 to 13 feet wide and 10 to 16 feet long. Don’t underestimate the importance of a properly sized closet in each bedroom. If you are fortunate enough to have a full wall

A stained glass door will provide privacy without making the bedroom area look closed off. • Creating a shaped hallway to differentiate between the bedroom and living areas.

LOCATION When it comes to bedrooms, location is the key. You want your bedroom to be conveniently situated but you also want to be somewhat removed from the noise in order to ensure a peaceful and restful space. Some people prefer to have all of their rooms on a single level while others prefer to house their bedrooms on a totally separate floor. An even better option is to have a split level home which requires more footage but allows for the best of both worlds. COLONIALS PROS: • Building a two-story house allows for better use of outdoor space since the house has a much smaller footprint than a single level home. • Bedtime will be much easier for everyone because the upstairs areas are much quieter. Grownups and children will both have an easier time falling asleep since the bedrooms are removed from the noisier parts of the house. • The upstairs typically stays much cleaner since during the daytime most family activity takes place downstairs.

• Can of pineapple rings • Some pomegranate seeds • A few blueberries • 3-4 kiwis • Mango (optional)

Crush the crackers in a blender or food processor.

Melt the butter or margarine in a small pot.

Add the cracker crumbs to the pot and mix well.

Put a tablespoon of the crumb mixture into a tartlet pan.

Pat it down and then squeeze it some more with another pan on top.

Put small spoonfuls of custard all over the cracker crust.

Spread the custard carefully so that the crumbs donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fall into the custard. Peel and cut fruits to prepare for assembly.

Take a pineapple ring and cut seven upside down vâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all around the pineapple. Cut a kiwi circle in half and then cut the half circle into small v shapes

Place the pineapple ring over the custard. Put the kiwi pieces in the seven spaces around the pineapple

Place a blueberry in the center of the tartlet and sprinkle pomegranate seeds around it.

Like a Needle In a Haystack… Search and Rescue Efforts

The summer had just wound down, but the Gross* family was reluctant to let go of their favorite season. Grabbing onto the fading wisps of summer, they headed out to a local mountain for one last hike - forgetting that dark was coming more quickly these days… They were deep in the wilderness when the sky became streaked with the purple hues of the setting sun. Frantically, Mr. Gross and his five children realized that they had but a short time to reach the parking lot where their car was waiting to take them safely home. They had come unprepared for a night in the woods. They were unprepared for the dark, for the cold, for the wild animals. They had no food, no tent, no fire, and most importantly - no overnight camping experience. With steadily growing panic, Mr. Gross hurried his progeny along- even as they tripped over rock and twig in the rapidly descending twilight. And then… the sun was gone. Just like that. Without a flashlight to guide them, the Grosses were hopelessly lost. Just one wrong move would take them away from the path and deeper into the woods, where they would be even harder to find. Fortunately, Mr. Gross’s cell phone still had battery. Dialing 371-NEED, he called Chaverim, a quiver in his voice. Trying to remain strong for his children, he described their whereabouts as best he could, and was promised that help was on the way. Sitting down upon the forest floor, Mr. Gross led his children in Tehillim and told them stories to distract them. Over at the Chaverim base, a special search and rescue force was assembled. Maps were consulted, gear was packed, and the members were on the way. The Grosses were successfully located by 11 pm and exited the park toward the comfort of home by 12 am. Once again, Chaverim was credited with the possible saving of lives.

Search and rescue: yet another thing that Chaverim does well. Over the course of the past sixteen years, Chaverim members have had plenty of opportunity to train in this vital area - and to put their skills into action. People go missing all the time, and Chaverim knows just how to respond when the calls come in. Mr. Moshe Jacobowitz, head of the search and rescue unit at Chaverim, shares with me the

He tells me that their first job is to determine the hiker’s locale, pinpointing their supposed location by asking questions about what they see and hear, their elevation, and various landmarks. Then he tells me that Chaverim knows the local hiking spots like the back of their hands - and they know the shortcuts in and out of the woods as well. I ask him to repeat himself when he tells me that Chaverim has inside knowledge of where to find powerline roads.

371-NEED is the most important number for community members to know when someone goes missing. scoop behind this special team. “We have ten members,” he tells me, “that undergo constant training for hike-related searches. We go out on monthly hikes to all of the local parks, sometimes by night, other times by day. We go in the rain or snow - all to prepare us for every possibility.” Each of the members, he tells me, come prepared with a pack full of enough food, water, and gear to last 36 hours - even carrying enough for another person. There are compasses, trail maps, and special cleats that attach to the hikers’ shoes to help them gain traction on hard-toclimb mountain terrain - and of course, they all tote along with them the years of training that they’ve received from the government, private instruction, and past searches. While in the midst of a wilderness search, Chaverim has loads of special knowledge that stands them in good stead. I am baffled when Mr. Jacobowitz tries to describe to me the various ways that Chaverim members are able to get to hikers quickly.

“Powerline roads?” I ask, trying to figure out what he means. He goes on to describe the massive electricity towers that dot the landscape - even in the woods. In order to build those towers in the middle of nowhere, he points out, vehicles must have had access to

those specific spots. …Oh, I never thought about that before… I’m quite thankful that we have a team that actually knows what they are doing! Chaverim has all sorts of inside knowledge that I learn about through the course of our conversation. We cover so much more than just wilderness searches and the techniques Chaverim uses to find the missing. Here in Monsey, every member participates in searches. We talk about lost children, elderly gone AWOL, and teens that just disappear. Hershy* was supposed to catch the bus to the city Thursday night to spend Shabbos back home with his family. He almost made it, but a block away from the stop, he saw the bus pull away. Try as he might, he just couldn’t catch up by foot, especially when lugging his suitcase. Hershy looked around him, deciding what to do. He was only 14, and his parents had trusted him to get home on his own, not suspecting he’d miss the bus. Oh well. He didn’t have a phone to call them, and being the independent type, he went to find a place to bed down. Around 2 am Hershy’s frantic mother called in to Chaverim, nearly in tears, telling the dispatcher that her son had never made it home that night. The search began at Hershy’s last known location and branched out from there. The Yeshiva was found empty, as well as the nearby streets. One by one, the gabbaim of all the local shuls were awakened as Chaverim phoned each of them from the special list that Chaverim maintains, asking

them to open the locked houses of prayer. Eventually, Hershy was found sleeping in the back of a locked Monsey shul. It’s not just lists of gabbaim that Chaverim has in their possession. They have a list of all bus managers - in case school children go missing during travel time, and a secret list of every Monsey shortcut - which members frequently update. Rabbi Meisels* was missing. The family had been searching for a while already, when someone thought to call Chaverim. Instantly, two members were dispatched to the scene. Beginning with the house they searched every nook and cranny, and then moved out to comb the immediate neighborhood, calling in more units as the search intensified. Chaverim noted that the Rabbi’s car was parked in the driveway - signaling to them that he had taken off on foot. Finally, after consulting their list of shortcuts, they found him on a very rarely used path - sprawled upon the ground where he had fallen - hurt, and unable to move. It had been hours since he had fallen, and not a single person had passed by. Fortunately, Chaverim knew just where to look.

im moved outdoors, realizing that realistically she couldn’t have gone far without shoes. Soon they found her aboard an unlocked mini bus that none of the family had thought to check. Just a little bit longer, and the cold would have been too much for Mrs. Gold’s frail body to handle… The calls come in to Chaverim frequently. Perhaps a tired Tatty hasn’t come home after work, and a worried wife will call in frantic, only for her husband to be found simply sleeping away the time in their car - eager to catch a nap in the middle of the daytime stress. Each call is taken seriously, but when a lost child is reported, Chaverim really goes into overdrive. Mr. Jacobowitz tells me that in addition to basic information gathering, a large part of a missing child search often comes down to thinking like a kid. “Sometimes we have to ask questions like, ‘Who has a new toy on the block? Who just got a bike?’” Sometimes kids will wander away to visit people that they may barely even know, solely on basis of a newly acquired possession. Other times, kids will try out shortcuts they may have once traversed - and although the parent assumes the child wouldn’t remember the path - the child in fact does. “Never underestimate a child,” I am told, then being treated to a story about out-of-town guests,

whose five- and seven-year-old went missing. The parents were frantic - not knowing where their boys were. When they were found at a relative’s home, they told their parents that they remembered that a cousin lived not far away and set out to find him - remembering the way from previous visits. Other times, children have been innocently found to be sleeping in seldom used closets, under a port-a-crib, or wrapped invisibly inside a blanket. I laugh when the search coordinator tells me how he once responded to a call from a family that had been searching high and low for their daughter, but was unable to find her. When he arrived at the scene, he pulled out a dining room chair to sit on while he took the information, and lo and behold a little child tumbled from her comfortable nest that she’d made across two seats. Of course, we can never let our guard down, imaging that all stories end well. Unfortunately, our community knows all too well what can happen when a child goes missing… Thankfully, we have a great team on the trail that knows just what to do when one a community member is presumed missing. Here’s one last great story that just goes to show the importance of calling Chaverim right away when someone is unable to be located…

It was Shavuos night, and Chasidishe yungerleit filled the streets with flashlights, calling out in the dark for a lost boy. Mr. Jacobowitz just happened to be passing by and noticed the scene, asking them why they hadn’t called Chaverim when a child went missing. Quickly, Chaverim was mobilized and Mr. Jacobowitz arrived at the two-year-old’s home where police cars and fire trucks had already gathered. The swarm of humanity was quite the sight. Chaverim began their own search, looking everywhere possible for the little boy. As Mr. Jacobowitz surveyed the surroundings, he mentally lowered himself to the level of a child. All of a sudden, it dawned on him where the boy might be found. Running across the street he peeked under the neighbors’ raised porch. It had been raining earlier that night, and the porch was just the right height to provide shelter for a little person… There beneath the slats was found an adorable, giggling two-year-old, comfortably ensconced in his little hideout - immensely enjoying the lights and search forces called out in his honor. People go missing for all sorts of reasons, but with the right combination of siyata d’Shmaya, training, and a good dose of sechel - Chaverim is zoche to return many people to the safety of their loving homes.

Taxes and Mortgage by Ann Zeilingold It's that time of year again. Taxes are due; you can file your federal tax return as early as January 19th. Taxes are crucial and can be the difference between one getting a mortgage loan or not. The reason being that in order to get a mortgage today your income needs to be verified. Sometimes a pay stub and a w2 suffice, but when one is self-employed, we calculate income based on the last filed tax returns. Sometimes just one return is required and sometimes a two-year average is needed. Isser Zeilingold, CPA in New City, says, “Usually my self-employed clients are not ready to file in January. It is very important to go over all the expenditures and make sure that any deductions that can be taken are taken.” The self-employed borrower will pay less income taxes if their net income is lower. Additionally they may be partners, and the partnership returns are prepared by a different accountant and may not be ready. “We need to wait until those returns are on in order to file a proper return.” From an accounting standpoint, filing more expenses is crucial and doing that properly is one of the marks of a good accountant. How many times have you heard someone say. “My accountant is so good! I paid so little taxes this year!” But when it comes to mortgage, we base the loan on the net income, not the gross. Therefore, if your accountant is overly aggressive, or if you pay personal expenses through your business, this practice may hurt your opportunities in being qualified for the mortgage that you may need or want. Even someone who is employed and receives a w2 needs to be careful. Some of the things that I have seen over the years which you should watch out for are the following

employee expenses that are: • Paid or incurred during your tax year, • For carrying on your trade or business of being an employee, and • Ordinary and necessary. An expense is ordinary if it is common and accepted in your trade, business, or profession. An expense is necessary if it is appropriate and helpful to your business. An expense doesn't have to be required to be considered necessary.” There is a form that your accountant can fill out that lists unreimbursed expenses. When I see this form, I need to deduct those expenses from the tax return. A perfect example is a client that I was not able to qualify for a loan recently. He was a union plumber that made $41,000 on his w2. His wife made $32,000 as a nurse’s aide. He filed $45,000 of unreimbursed expenses. His wife filed $18,000. I had to reduce their income from $74,000 to $11,000. They no longer q u a l i fi e d for their dream

home. They got a nice refund tax time, but they ruined their chances of getting a mortgage. Now there is one way around this: a mortgage program that doesn't require the tax return, just a pay stub and a letter from their employer confirming their job history in writing. Unfortunately this client didn't qualify for that program. The second issue that has been coming up lately is IRS payment plans. If your tax return shows that there is a balance due, we either need to see that it was paid via a cleared check, and/or a confirmation from the IRS that there is no balance - or a payment plan needs to be in place and we need to qualify the liens with this ad-

ditional debt. We are now in January. Taxes for the most part have not yet been prepared. Talk to your mortgage specialist before filing your return. Make sure that your accountant and mortgage professional are on the same page. Discuss the items that are problematic with you accountant so that you, he and the mortgage professional can properly prepare you for being approved for a mortgage in 2016.

‫אחדות און געשמאק‬ ‫ווי באקאנט האט זיך דער בית‪-‬המדרש‬ ‫ערווארבן א שם‪-‬טוב במשך אירע יארן פון‬ ‫עקזיסטענץ‪ ,‬בשעת די שכנים פון ארום‬ ‫געניסן פון דעם דאזיגן ארט‪ .‬יעדער איינער‬ ‫וואס שפאצירט אריין אין בית‪-‬המדרש‪,‬‬ ‫ווערט ארומגענומען מיט איר רואיגקייט‬ ‫און געשמאק מיט וואס דער בית‪-‬המדרש‬ ‫צייכנט זיך אויס‪ .‬אויך די תפילות ווערן דארט‬ ‫אפגעראכטן מיט א ווארעמקייט וועלכע‬ ‫ווערט שטארק געשעצט און ארויפגעקוקט‬ ‫ביי די שכנים‪ ,‬דער אמן יהא‪-‬שמיה רבה‬ ‫איז א שם דבר אין די גאנצע געגנט‪ ,‬ווי אזוי‬ ‫אידן שרייען אויס מיט א ווארעמקייט‪ ,‬ווי‬ ‫צו זאגן "בריותיך אנחנו"‪ .‬עס לאזט זיך זאגן‬ ‫בפה מלא‪ ,‬אז אונזער בית‪-‬המדרש איז א‬ ‫רוחניות'דיגע וואונקל וועלכע ווארפט א‬ ‫ליכטיגקייט אויף די געגנט‪.‬‬ ‫די אטמאספערע צווישן די מתפללים‪,‬‬ ‫איז זייער היימליך און ברידערליך‪ .‬עס האט‬ ‫זיך פארמירט צווישן די מתפללים אזא לופט‪,‬‬ ‫כאילו עס איז די רעדע פון איין משפחה‪ ,‬איין‬ ‫חבורה‪ .‬ווען אימער איינער מאכט א שמחה‪,‬‬ ‫העלפט מען זיך ארויס אין יעדן פרט‪ ,‬אלע‬ ‫האלטן מיט די שמחה און מען העלפט‬ ‫זיך‪ ,‬עס הערשט א ווארעמקייט צווישן די‬ ‫מתפללים‪.‬‬ ‫אין אלגעמיין זענען די מתפללים‬ ‫געקנאטן פון א תורה'דיגער ישיבי'שער‬ ‫ציבור‪ ,‬הגם עס זענען פאראן אין בית‪-‬‬ ‫המדרש פון אלע מינים און אלע סארט‪,‬‬ ‫אלע זענען דארט ווילקאמען הצד השוה‬ ‫שבהם אז אלע האבן ריינע כוונות לעשות‬ ‫רצון אביהם שבשמים‪ ,‬דאווענען און לערנען‬ ‫כראוי וכיאות‪.‬‬
