THE SMOOTHEST ANSWERS

Why is everyone raving about the Candela? What’s so magical about it?

The Candela isn’t just the latest buzzword; it’s a revolution in laser hair removal. It’s renowned for its effectiveness across all skin tones and hair types, including those pesky fine hairs. Think of it as the gold standard— the kind of tool that medical professionals swear by.

I’ve been doing laser treatments for two years, but the hair keeps coming back. What’s going wrong?

Chances are you were using a Diode laser (gel machine), which is like comparing a toy to a powerhouse. The Candela G-Max Pro Plus is the real game-changer! It delivers dazzling results in fewer sessions, tackling even the most delicate and fine hairs with ease.

Does laser hair removal have to hurt? What’s your secret to a painless experience?

Forget the old adage—our treatments are a breeze! We use a high-tech cooling combo: Cryogen and the Zimmer device. This dynamic duo sprays a refreshing mist onto your skin before, during, and after each laser pulse, turning what used to be uncomfortable, into a surprisingly soothing experience.

+ NEWEST CANDELA MODEL

+ PAINLESS TREATMENT

+ TREATS INGROWN HAIRS

+ EXPERIENCED TECHNICIANS

How many sessions until I can say goodbye to unwanted hair for good?

Each visit brings a 10-20% reduction in hair growth. Do the math, and you’ll see how quickly those numbers add up to a smooth, hair-free you!

Safety is crucial to me. How secure is your laser treatment?

Our laser is not just FDA-approved; it’s a model of safety. Suitable for use during pregnancy with your physicians written consent, and perfectly safe while breastfeeding, you can rest assured knowing we prioritize your well-being.

Are there any hair colors or types that just don’t work with laser treatment?

Unfortunately, lasers don’t play nice with gray or white hair because they lack the pigment needed for the laser to latch onto. But for the rest, the laser works like a charm!

I have a packed schedule. How long will a session take?

Your time is precious, so we’ve got you covered. Thanks to the Candela’s lightning-fast 3-Hertz speed, your sessions are streamlined and efficient, cutting down on time so you can get back to your day.

So, what makes LASER BY AHUVA a cut above the rest?

At LASER BY AHUVA, you’ll experience top-notch Candela technology, along with a relaxing, soothing salon. We offer superior results with less discomfort and fewer sessions. Open from Sunday to Thursday, 9 AM to 11 PM, we accommodate busy schedules and cater to men with a dedicated male technician. Ahuva, a BoardCertified Physician Assistant, ensures every treatment is safe and effective. Discover where cutting-edge technology meets serenity!

The new public bidding process came about as a result of Senator Bill Weber's ongoing efforts in collaboration w ith the district administration and board, as well as local advocates and stakeholders. It is an important first step in resolving a longtime stalemate between the school district and private schools. Private school students and their families have faced transportation challenges since 2016 when a change in the busing policies had a significant impact on their transportation services. This change allows busing for 462 (or 25%) of the District's private school students whose schools were successful in the public bidding process, and it comes *at no additional cost to the District.*

GLUTEN-FREE COFFEE

(Re: Coffee Culture, Issue 465)

We really enjoy The Monsey View every week, and I appreciate that I can comfortably allow my children to enjoy it as well. Thank you!

In this week’s article on coffee, I was surprised to see “Rissy” mention that Taster’s Choice instant coffee contains gluten. My daughter is on a gluten-free diet and drinks Taster’s Choice coffee on occasion, so I realized that I needed to confirm this.

I contacted Nescafe, and to my relief, they informed me that Taster’s Choice decaf and regular instant coffee (in all containers) are completely gluten-free and contain only 100% coffee. I assume their other varieties are as well, but I did not confirm that with them.

I’m reaching out now simply to reassure other readers who may be on a gluten-free diet that there’s nothing to worry about in terms of gluten in their coffee. S.F.

THE GOOD OLD DAYS

(Re: Recipe for Success, Issue 465)

Reading about Franczoz Bakery brought back so many beautiful memories of growing up in Williamsburg in the late 1950s and 1960s. It was so nice to read about the Franczoz girls!

Back in the day, challah-baking wasn’t as popular as it is now, baruch Hashem, and many women who worked in the Williamsburg

A TRANSPORTATION TREASURE

(Re: The Cheder Office, Issue 463)

Thank you for the last two weeks’ issues regarding school administration and staff. The articles were very informative and eye-opening. After reading the interviews, I feel an extra appreciation to the mosdos my children attend for all that they provide for us. I remember waiting for the bus during my school days and never knowing when it was coming or if we already missed it. Today, there’s a tracking system in place, plus a transportation secretary available from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. for any updates or bus changes, and she’s always glad to help, even for the smallest things. It’s amazing how much time, effort and money our mosdos invest to help us. And thank you to The Monsey View for helping us realize that!

YOUR SAY

BACK TO SCHOOL

Walking the streets these days, I find myself choking up with tears. As I see mothers kissing their young children goodbye and whispering a tefillah as the bus doors close, I feel like my heart will burst. Mi k’amcha Yisroel! We truly are an army of loyal, devoted soldiers. In a world with no morals, our children live like princes and princesses. From every school window you can hear the chanting of the alef-bais and Modeh Ani. In the higher grades, students are learning all about Elul and Tishrei and what it means to be mamlich Hashem.

As the sound of learning echoes and resounds from all the chadarim and Bais Yaakovs, I am moved to say “thank you.” Thank you to the wonderful principals, menahalim, teachers, melamdim, secretaries, assistants and everyone else who has invested so much so that our children can

THE NOSE KNOWS

Until a few years ago, my sense of smell was a delightful part of life. The unique smell of each place lent character to the experience. As soon as I walked into my grandparents’ home, I smelled the special smell that lingers there. You would push open the glass doors to the bakery, and the aroma engulfed you like a warm hug. The seforim store inspired with the tantalizing smell of fresh books. The fish store, the butcher, the dentist… each had a distinct smell. The unique leather scent of new shoes permeated the shoe store, the supermarket was fragrant with coffee and popcorn. Each place had its own scent. No longer. Today, establishments diffuse their fragrance of choice in the air. Forget about the loss of the unique sensory experience. These perfumes are toxic fumes that many people do not tolerate well and plenty are allergic to. It’s not healthy for anyone, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult for sensitive people to shop in local establishments. Business owners, please take that into consideration.

I’ve heard all the explanations about how it’s necessary to hide a bad smell in the store or to create an upper-class atmosphere. But if you keep your store clean, it won’t smell, and if you offer good service, your customers will come, nice scent or not.

Most shoppers are uncomfortable speaking up. But if you smell something, say something. Personally, I also compliment places that do not use these scents. Now I urge manufacturers and stores to explore non-toxic options that can offer a true upgrade to the experience you offer.

HOW OFTEN

DO YOU CLEAN YOUR JEWELRY, AND WHERE DO YOU KEEP IT? DO YOU SLEEP WITH ANY JEWELRY?

I do an official cleaning on Erev Pesach only. Every so often, I’ll touch up my jewelry on Motzei Shabbos using an old toothbrush and some dish soap. It works wonders! – A Reader

I keep my jewelry in an eyeglasses case, and whatever I don’t use, I hide it well. – A Reader

I clean my jewelry twice a year and do a more expensive cleaning every few years as necessary. I’d love to tell you that I keep it all in my jewelry box, but the pieces I wear often are on a tray on my dresser, and my watch barely leaves my wrist. – A Reader

I keep my Shabbos jewelry in a pouch in my dresser. My diamond ring is the only piece of jewelry I sleep with. I rarely ever remove it; I find that my finger is the safest spot for it! – A Reader

Win the race to the parking lot

I clean my jewelry in honor of special occasions in a cup of ammonia for five minutes. I keep it in an open divider tray; it keeps all pieces separate without the need to open jewelry boxes every night. I sleep only with my necklace to save time in the morning. – A Reader

I clean my jewelry once a year. I keep all of my jewelry in a special jewelry box, a gift from my dear mother, a”h, aside from my earrings and necklace, which I never take off. – A Reader

I HARDLY EVER CLEAN MY JEWELRY. ANSWERING THIS QUESTION MAKES ME THINK I SHOULD DO IT MORE OFTEN. THE ONLY JEWELRY I SLEEP WITH IS MY WATCH. I KEEP MY JEWELRY IN A DRAWER IN MY WALKIN CLOSET. – A READER

I clean my jewelry before Yom Tov or a simcha. Occasionally, if I feel it can really use a cleaning, I’ll do it on a random weekday as well. I clean it myself, either by letting it sit in hot water and dish soap for a few minutes, or by brushing it softly with toothpaste and rinsing with hot water. I keep my Shabbos jewelry in a box and everyday jewelry in a jewelry dish. I do not sleep with any jewelry on. – C.P.

I clean my jewelry before a sibling’s chasunah. Generally, I keep all of it in a safe. I never sleep with any jewelry because it’s not comfortable to sleep with. – A Reader

I NEVER, EVER TAKE OFF MY DIAMOND RING. SINCE I’M A SHEITELMACHER, IT GETS COVERED IN HAIRSPRAY, SO I HAVE TO CLEAN IT EVERY NIGHT. IT’S NOT GOOD FOR THE RING, HOWEVER, AS MY SETTING HAS CRACKED DUE TO THE EXCESSIVE CLEANING. – A READER

I hardly ever clean my jewelry. I clean it before Pesach, if I get to it, and before a close simcha, if I manage to remember. It belongs in my top dresser drawer, but it often stays on the bathroom counter until cleaning lady day, when I quickly retrieve it before she will. Not infrequently, my jewelry finds a good resting spot in a random kitchen drawer when I remove it to wash dishes. As for the jewelry that used to belong to my mother, a”h (which was given to me for safekeeping many years ago), hey, why would you want to know where I keep it?! – Esty S.

I clean my jewelry before Pesach and before a close family simcha. I keep them in the original box. I always wear my weekday necklace and earrings and take them off only for Shabbos. – A Reader

I clean my jewelry before Pesach or a close wedding by boiling up water and dish soap, dropping it in for a few minutes, and running them over with a toothbrush. It comes out clean and sparkling. I always wear my kiddushin ring, which is square shaped. – A Reader

I usually take my jewelry off on Motzei Shabbos and put it in a cup with boiling water and a little Palmolive dish detergent. I rinse it with cold water and dry it. You don’t expect me to announce where I keep my jewelry, do you? – P.H.

I DISCOVERED A PRODUCT CALLED HAGERTY JEWELRY POLISH, WHICH WORKS WONDERS WITH JEWELRY. YOU SIMPLY DIP YOUR JEWELRY IN IT FOR A BIT AND WIPE IT DOWN WITH A BRUSH. IT REALLY CLEANS THE JEWELRY WELL! BUT NO, EVEN THOUGH IT’S REALLY SIMPLE, I USUALLY DO IT ONLY BEFORE YOM TOV OR A FAMILY SIMCHA. REGARDING JEWELRY THAT I KEEP ON… NONE OF IT! THE FIRST THING I DO WHEN I GET IN FROM THE OUTDOORS IS REMOVE MY RINGS, BRACELETS, WATCH AND NECKLACE! ONLY THEN DO I FEEL COMFORTABLE. – A READER

I should really clean my jewelry more often. I would love to hear easy and effective ways to do it. – A Reader

I would like to say that I clean my jewelry every few months, but in reality, it happens a minute before sof zman biur chometz on Erev Pesach, when I give it a speedy rinse. I do not sleep with any jewelry on. – A Busy Mommy

I CLEAN MY JEWELRY ONCE A YEAR, ON EREV PESACH. – M.G.

MY JEWELRY GETS CLEANED ON EREV PESACH, WHEN I KASHER IT. I KEEP IT ALL IN A JEWELRY ROLL AND DO NOT SLEEP WITH ANYTHING ON. WHO CAN SLEEP WITH EARRING BACKS PRICKING BEHIND THEIR EARS? – A READER

I try to clean my jewelry before every Yom Tov. I combine dish soap and water in a washing cup, add my jewelry, and let it soak for a few minutes. Then I gently clean it with a toothbrush. I keep each jewelry piece in a separate compartment in my jewelry box, and I never, ever sleep with jewelry on. – A Reader

I do not clean my jewelry, and that would explain why they don’t sparkle. (Now that I’m thinking about it, I should really clean them. Along with the playroom. And the bathrooms. I’m looking forward to life management suggestions.) I keep my jewelry in my dresser drawer in a fuzzy blue jewelry box, and I don’t go to sleep wearing any jewelry, except for a few beaded friendship bracelets my daughter made for me. – A Reader

I KEEP MY JEWELRY IN THE BOX THAT IT CAME IN. I DON’T SLEEP WITH ANY JEWELRY, BECAUSE I’M AFRAID THAT IT MIGHT FALL OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. – A READER

I have a pretty storage case, but my jewelry often ends up on my windowsill when I take it off for the night. My gold earrings are very precious to me. I’m a teacher, and I bought the earrings with the money that I saved up from tips. – A Reader

I clean my jewelry only once a year, before Pesach. I take off all of my jewelry before going to bed, except my watch. In fact, my watch has become like another limb. I think I’d probably wear it even if it would stop working… – A Reader

I cleaned my jewelry recently for a simcha. I thought I’d have to give it in to get it really clean, but I just used ammonia and a toothbrush, and it really came out beautiful. I hope to do it more often now. I keep my jewelry in a simple jewelry box on my dresser — when I’m not lazy to put it away, that is. I don’t keep any jewelry on all the time. Although many women sometimes have their fingers swell up, my fingers work the opposite way, and my rings literally fall off my fingers. In the summer, my rings fit me better, so I wear them more often then. Otherwise, I only wear my rings on Shabbos. – A Reader

I GOT A JEWELRY CLEANSER AS A GIFT, AND USE IT EVERY OTHER MONTH. I KEEP MY JEWELRY ON MY DRESSER (OFFICIALLY IN THE DRAWER IN A JEWELRY BOX, BUT YOU KNOW HOW IT IS), AND I SLEEP WITH MY EARRINGS ON. – A READER

Let’s just say that the last time I cleaned my jewelry was before Pesach… I recently had to fix my diamond necklace, and the jewelry store cleaned it as a courtesy. It looks beautiful now. I should really clean all my jewelry more often. – A Reader

I clean my jewelry as needed; it takes no more than two minutes. I put my jewelry on a white plastic plate, spray it up with Windex, turn it over and spray again. I allow it to sit a few minutes and then rinse the pieces with the hottest water I can handle. The ammonia in the Windex is what cleans it. You can do the same thing with plain ammonia in a plastic soup bowl, but it smells awful. Pour in a little ammonia, swish around the jewelry in it, and rinse. The only jewelry I would sleep with is a watch. – A Reader

I usually clean my jewelry when I notice that the diamonds on my rings don’t sparkle. I wipe silver jewelry with a polishing cloth. I keep some of the better jewelry in cases inside makeup bags deep inside the closet, and some in a small metal safe. I never sleep with my jewelry; it is very uncomfortable. – A Reader

I definitely do not sleep with jewelry on. It can fall off or get damaged during sleep. Plus, it must be uncomfortable to sleep with bits and pieces of jewelry. I clean it as often as needed. When there’s a simcha coming up, I either clean it in my own solution or have it done professionally (but that’s costly, so it doesn’t happen too often). My jewelry is kept in the boxes in which they were purchased. – A Reader

PARSHAS KI SAVO

Thank You, Hashem!

The parsha begins with the special mitzvah of bikkurim

A Yid enters his field and finds that the first of his fruit has ripened. He ties the first fruit with red string and prepares to bring it up to Yerushalayim. Along with the bikkurim, the Yid would offer praise, in a raised voice, going back to the start of our history as a nation, and outlining all that happened to us until we arrived in Eretz Yisrael and were blessed with such fine fruit — a true chesed of Hashem.

Here’s something to ponder: Is it such a big deal that the tree bore fruit? Is this something so unusual that it warrants such song and dance? Juicy, sweet fruits are the natural way of the world.

How can this mitzvah be explained?

When we merit extraordinary nissim, it’s only normal for us to think of thanking Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Wow! Something so out of the ordinary took place; of course we’ll remember to sing His praise. But when it comes to regular, daily occurences, like the fact we’re alive, that we can breathe, hear and see, we rarely remember to be thankful.

This is what the Torah wants to teach us. Don’t think the natural way of the world is any less of a miracle than extraordinary, unusual occurrences. Bikkurim reminds us to contemplate the fact that life continues smoothly for us daily, and to thank Hashem for that.

“Al kol neshimah u’neshimah tehallel Kah” — we must thank Hashem for every breath, for every heartbeat. These small, regular things deserve our joyous gratitude and praise.

The Rambam says that one must daven for the future and express thanks for the past. “ V’chol hamarbeh l’hodos… harei zeh meshubach!”

In fact, the term “Yehudi” comes from the root “to thank.” This trait is the foundation of a Yid. The more one thanks Hashem, the more praiseworthy he is.

SHMUEL* SAT AT HIS DESK, brow furrowed in concentration. He reviewed the details on the screen. At first glance, everything seemed to align perfectly. But something wasn’t adding up.

As one of the top players in a local organization, Shmuel was tasked with managing certain projects that benefited many. Today, he was working on one particular project in which he had

invested lots of time and effort. He also invested lots of heart, perhaps more than usual. This initiative had been his personal brainchild, and he was hopeful that it would succeed. But it seemed that someone was sabotaging his efforts. The process was stuck in a one step forward, two steps back pattern. Shmuel wasn’t sure what was going wrong.

Then he saw the email. The contents shocked him. Someone

Someone whom he considered a friend was actually undermining his efforts, blocking him from succeeding!

whom he considered a friend was actually undermining his efforts, blocking his efforts from succeeding!

Shmuel’s first thoughts were a mix of disappointment, anger and revenge. It would take hours and hours on his part to prod his pet project back on track — all because of one man’s interference.

It was six p.m. Time to close shop for the day. As Shmuel took out his car keys, he decided to unlock a different chamber of his heart. He would deal with the technicalities tomorrow, but in the meantime, he was determined to surmount this challenge. Thank You, Hashem, he thought to himself. Thank You for this challenge. Thank You for putting the idea in my mind in the first place, and for giving me the ability to work it through. And thank You for torpedoing my plans… It must be for my benefit, though I cannot see it now.

Throughout the entire ride home, Shmuel went through many tiny details of his life, and thanked Hashem for them all. He thought of his wife and children, of the fact that they had a roof over their heads, that everyone was healthy, that his children were in a great school, and that he had a good job. It wasn’t easy, converting his mindset from pain to gratitude, but Shmuel mustered the strength.

Feeling uplifted by the focus on gratitude, Shmuel gave a light knock on the front door and entered his home. He was happy he could call out his typical cheerful “Hello!” as he walked inside, despite the problems the afternoon had brought.

He received silence in return. Walking inside, he found his wife and daughter, Dini, standing near their two-yearold, looking pale. The tension was palpable.

“What happened?” he asked.

“What a nes!” His wife was the first to find her tongue. “We just had a real miracle!”

She described how just moments before, their toddler had been sitting on the windowsill, watching the street below their fifth-floor apartment. Suddenly, one of the bars of the window guards disconnected, and the baby began falling forward, headfirst.

Shmuel looked toward the window and back at their baby. She was here! Alive and well…

“Could you imagine?! Just that minute, Dini walked past. She saw the baby hanging outside the window gates… hanging between life and death… She ran over and grabbed her — just in time!”

Dini and her mother were still shaking, and the toddler looked confused. This had taken place literally moments before.

It didn’t take long for Shmuel to realize that at the very moment that his daughter had been hanging between heaven and earth, his own heart had been there too. He had been painstakingly taking his personal difficulty and turning it into an impetus for gratitude. At those very moments when he was thanking his Creator… a new reason to thank Him was being created.

In a Victory for Yeshivas, Appeals Court To Hear State Regulations Case

Nearly three months after an appellate court decision left yeshivas facing state regulation, an appeals court has granted a motion challenging that outcome, kickstarting the process for the case to be heard in the coming months.

REAL ID Pushed Off Again, Sort Of

After multiple postponements, the law requiring travelers to have federally-approved identification to board a plane will finally be taking effect on May 7, albeit with a few loopholes that will defer full enforcement for another two years.

The New York State Education Department has been attempting to mandate secular curriculums in yeshiva since 2022, with a group called Parents for Educational and Religious Liberty in Schools formed to champion parental rights. Since that time, the matter has been in and out of the court, with regulations struck down in 2023 by the Albany Supreme Court. That decision was reversed in June by the Appellate Court, reinstating the regulations once again, much to the outrage of the yeshiva community, as previously reported in The Monsey View

PEARLS issued a statement following that decision, accusing NYSED of targeting yeshivas, and began pursuing the only legal avenue left to overturn the regulations — filing a motion with the State Court of Appeals. The appeals court is known for rarely accepting any of the many cases that are submitted for consideration, but the court announced on September 12 that it would be hearing the yeshiva case.

Both sides will be submitting their briefs, and the case will likely be heard in the winter of 2025.

The REAL ID Act was created in response to 9/11, establishing minimum security standards for stateissued driver’s licenses and identification cards. Under the act, those over the age of 18 entering a federally-regulated commercial plane, certain federal facilities and nuclear power plants will all be required to carry the upgraded identification.

Most recently, the REAL ID Act deadline was pushed off twice because of Covid, but the United States Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Transportation are finally putting it into play, rolling out the new requirement in phases because of low-enrollment in the REAL ID program. According to reports, just 56% of drivers in the country are REAL ID-compliant, with the DHS expressing concern that repeated postponements have left Americans with a sense of complacency about making the upgrade to their licenses.

As of May 7, flyers who don’t have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, an enhanced driver’s license issued by their home state, a passport, a DHS Trusted Traveler card or other acceptable forms of identification, may find themselves facing long lines at the airport as TSA agents

utilize other methods to verify their identity. The REAL ID requirement is currently expected to become a nationwide reality in 2027.

Massive Crowd Turns Out for Weber’s Senior Fair

There was a record turnout at Rockland Community College on September 8, as 1,250 seniors and caregivers flocked to the Eugene Levy Fieldhouse to learn about services and programs that are available locally to enrich their lives.

The 38th Senate District has been running the annual senior fair for years, but while events held previously had drawn 80 vendors, this year’s expo included 138 exhibitors. Several of those vendors serve members of the Orthodox Jewish community including Community Outreach Center, Hamaspik HomeCare, Rockland Jewish Family Services, Serenity Center, Marquis Home Care and Monsey Health Center, among others.

The day’s strong educational component included an introduction to CPR presented by Spring Hill EMS, and presentations on a variety of topics including estate planning, senior living and healthcare. Visitors to the senior fair had the opportunity to convert their regular license to an enhanced version or to a federally issued REAL ID at a New York State Department of Motor Vehicles mobile unit, with free kosher lunches from Glatt Geshmak sponsored by Polaris Healthcare. The fair also provided seniors with more than a few freebies, including flu shots, diabetes screenings, blood pressure and general wellness checks, and senior-friendly smoke detectors equipped with visual strobe lights or bed shaking technology. And at least 10 people who did an unclaimed funds search with a representative of the New York State Comptroller’s office hit paydirt, discovering thousands of dollars that were owed to them.

“Our seniors deserve for us, as a community, to be there for them, which is what we accomplish year after year with the senior fair,” said Weber, adding, “Being able to benefit so many seniors by providing critical information and an enjoyable day out is both a privilege and an honor for my office.”

Chapter 11

Recap: The Nazis destroy Ludmir. The Blums hide in the ceiling of the store.

Maria Roluk had never seen her husband so distraught. She hadn’t seen him drink like this in 20 years. But now he was asking for yet another glass of vodka.

All he kept saying was a strange word she had never heard before: “Treblinka.”

And all she kept asking was, “What is Treblinka?”

And all he answered, if he answered anything, was, “Treblinka.”

Then the front door opened, and Stephan walked in. Ivan looked at his son, dressed in his SS uniform, and tracked every step with his eyes, which seemed to be on fire. Suddenly, without warning, Ivan jumped out of his chair, raced toward Stephan like a madman, grabbed him fiercely by the collar, and drove him back into the far wall.

“Stop!” Maria shouted.

Ivan looked deep into his son’s eyes with a look that could kill. Stephan had never seen his father like this. He smelled the vodka on father’s breath, but he didn’t know how to react. And even if he wanted to react, there was nothing he could

do; his father’s grip was too powerful.

After what seemed like an eternity, Mr. Roluk released his son, spit on the floor next to him and muttered, “Treblinka.”

Then he fell to the floor and started crying like a baby.

* * * * *

As the mass murder of Ludmir’s Jews at Piyatidne continued, Rachel and her family remained in the attic. They dared not leave. They dared not move.

The attic was incredibly cramped. There was no room to even sit up. Each person went in head first with hands stretched out in front of them and then stayed in that position. The way they went in, that was the way they stayed.

There was no food. No water. No bathroom. Day after day, they heard the sounds of horror from the outside: shouting, screaming, machine-gun fire...

YAAKOV ASTOR
She could not even muster the energy to wet her tongue. Her world was spinning around, and she could not move

And then, one day, it stopped. There was an eerie quiet. There was no way not to notice the sudden disappearance of 18,000 people in a small town. The quiet was deafening.

Mr. Blum was the first one to venture out.

One by one, he helped his children down from the ceiling. First Chana. Then Motl. Then Wolf. Then Simcha. And finally, Rachel.

Rachel, though, was so close to death that her tongue stuck to her palate (one of the signs of imminent death by starvation). She could not even muster the energy to wet her tongue. Her world was spinning around, and she could not move.

Her father briefly left the store to survey the situation. Later, he returned with a little water. At first, Rachel could not even take a sip. They wet her lips, but still she could not move her tongue. Finally, she swallowed a drop of the water they had put on her lips. Then she took a small sip. Then another sip. Then she sat up. Soon she was able to walk.

* * * * *

During the day, Rachel and her family went back up to the attic and stayed hidden. They only came out at night. Not to go anywhere or to do anything, but just to stretch their limbs and look for a little food.

Most of the murdered Jews had been shot in Piyatidne. Many, however, had been murdered during the round-up as the Nazis and Ukrainians tried to get them out of their houses. Dead bodies still lay in the houses and streets all around.

To clean up the streets, the Nazis forced the surviving Jews to cart away the dead. They came with wagons. Not wagons with horses. Just wagons. The Nazis made the Jews fill the wagons with the dead and then cart them away.

* * * * *

The Nazis had created two sections in the ghetto. The Blums were hiding in a part of the ghetto that had now been declared off limits. The Jews themselves called this area the death ghetto (toiteh ghetto in Yiddish), because anyone living there was illegal, and those caught would be killed. The other half of the ghetto (which was physically smaller) housed Jews who were allowed to live if they had working papers. That section was called the living ghetto (leibedik ghetto in Yiddish).

One night in November 1942, Rachel’s brother Motl went out in search of food and found a loaf of bread. On his way back, he slipped stealthily from building to building, because Ukrainian guards always lurked about. He would go behind or into one building, listen out for any sounds, look around, and then go to the next building. He was in the building just across from the Blum store when he suddenly heard foot-

“Stop!” a man said in Ukrainian. Rachel and her family heard everything as they hid in the ceiling just a couple of feet from where the Ukrainian found Motl

steps. He stood perfectly still until the sound of the footsteps died down, and then he waited.

Still not quite sure it was safe, he left the loaf where he was and made his way out of the building toward the building where his family was hiding up in the ceiling. It was so quiet that even the smallest sound was magnified. He made it into the storefront without getting caught and let out a silent sigh of relief.

As he was about to climb up to the hiding place, he suddenly heard the footsteps again. Even Rachel heard them, up in the ceiling. The footsteps were unmistakable and coming closer. Motl had no chance to do anything.

“Stop!” a man said in Ukrainian.

Rachel and her family heard everything as they hid in the ceiling just a couple of feet from where the Ukrainian found Motl.

The Ukrainians in general were some of Europe’s most notorious antisemites. Many were descendants of the Cossacks who had brutally murdered hundreds of thousands of Jews in the years 1648–1649 (the Tach v’Tat massacres). For many Ukrainians, especially the younger ones influenced by the free-flowing antisemitism of the times, little had changed in the ensuing centuries. They generally did not need a reason to turn in Jews. Nevertheless, it helped that they were given money by the Nazis or promoted for each Jew they captured alive. This Ukrainian was no exception. He pointed his gun at Motl and told him to come with him.

The next night, the Blums found the loaf of bread in the building next to theirs. Motl had dropped it there when he first suspected he might have been discovered. He probably did so to help his family remain hidden, be-

cause if his captors had seen the loaf, they might have suspected it was there to feed hungry Jews. Or, if they came back and found the loaf in the other building, they would have intensified their search there rather than anywhere else. No one would ever know exactly what Motl was thinking. As noble as he was to the end, Motl was murdered by the Nazis.

Although they were hiding up in the ceiling at night, the frigid winter wind would whip through the storefront below. The windows and doors hadn’t been repaired. Even up in the ceiling, the freezing cold was unbearable.

In early December, on a particularly cold night, Simcha, the youngest Blum child, froze to death right there in the ceiling. He was a quiet, unassuming teenager who had never hurt anyone, and now he, too, was gone.

* * * * *

The Nazis and their Ukrainian henchmen were always on the alert for any sign of Jews in hiding. One day, they sent around a team with a large dog to try to sniff out where people may be hiding. The team came into the store at one point, and the dog paced back and forth, both inside and out. It sniffed the ground again and again, but it could not figure out where the smells were coming from. Rachel, a few feet above where this was happening, was so frightened she could hardly breathe. But after searching the place from morning until night, the dog finally gave up.

4. Place half of the Viennese crunch on top of the ice cream.

5. Wash the bowl again. Add the remaining ice cream, and mix until smooth. Add the honey, and pulse gently just to combine. Do not overmix.

6. Pour the honey ice cream over the crunch. Top with the rest of the crunch, and add the pomegranate seeds on top. Freeze. To serve, gently cut the pan around, and place onto a serving tray.

ORANGEINFUSED HONEY

This simple recipe adds a touch of mystery and elegance to the standard honey that we use on Rosh Hashanah.

INGREDIENTS

1 orange

1 cup honey

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 225°.

2. Wash the orange well, and pat dry. Use a vegetable peeler to remove strips of zest from the orange.

3. Bake the orange strips on a parchmentlined baking sheet until the edges start to curl; approximately 15 to 25 minutes.

4. Place dried zest and 1 cup honey into a small pan.

5. Warm the honey over lowest heat, stirring frequently and making sure the honey doesn’t boil. Leave on heat for 10 to 15 minutes, until desired flavor is achieved.

6. Strain through a fine mesh sieve to remove zest (or, for stronger flavor, leave the zest inside).

In the shadowed, cobblestone streets of Mainz, Germany, whispers filled the air. The town usually buzzed with the sounds of commerce and Torah study, but today the busy hum was muted, as if the very air awaited the outcome of an event far away in Rome.

Yitzchak, a respected member of the community, paced outside the stone edifice of the Mainz shul. His footsteps echoed off the walls, a rhythmic beat that matched the racing of his heart.

“Do you think he’ll succeed?” whispered Moshe, approaching Yitzchak with eyes wide with a mix of fear and hope.

Yitzchak turned, his face a mask of worry tempered with a flicker of hope. “Rabbi Shimon, in addition to being a talmid chacham, is a baal kishron, a master of strategy. If anyone can turn the Pope’s heart, it’s him.”

“But chess?” Moshe’s voice trembled slightly. “Does our fate really hang on a game of chess?”

“Not just any game, Moshe. A game played by Rabbi Shimon Hagadol,” Yitzchak replied, his voice steadying. “He plays not just by his wits, but with the tefillos of all of Mainz.”

Chess With the Pope

In Rome, the architectural grandeur of the Vatican stood in stark contrast to the simple yet dignified sil-

houette of Rabbi Shimon Hagadol. Rabbi Shimon was led into an opulent room where the Pope awaited, a chessboard set before him.

“Rabbi,” the Pope began, his voice echoing slightly in the vast chamber, “they tell me you’re a master of this game.”

Rabbi Shimon bowed slightly. “Your Honor, I am but a servant of Hashem, seeking justice for my people.”

“Then let us play,” the Pope said, gesturing to the board. “If you win, I will reconsider the edicts against the Jews.”

Rabbi Shimon nodded, his eyes not on the Pope but on the chessboard, where the fate of the Jews of Mainz lay in the balance.

As the game commenced in the Vatican’s grand hall, Rabbi Shimon Hagadol sat in deep contemplation, his fingers lightly touching the carved wooden pieces before him. Each move he made on the chessboard was deliberate. Across from him, the Pope, surrounded by his advisors, watched every move with a calculating eye, aware of the stakes that extended far beyond the marble chessboard.

YAAKOV ASTOR

The chess match unfolded like a silent battle between seasoned warriors. Rabbi Shimon’s brow was furrowed in concentration. The Pope, impressed by Rabbi Shimon’s calm demeanor, responded with moves that were carefully calculated.

Back in Mainz, the usually vibrant streets were deserted as the entire community congregated in the shul. Young and old stood side by side, their voices united in a haunting melody of supplication as they beseeched Hashem for Rabbi Shimon’s success and the safety of their community.

Checkmate!

The tension in the Pope’s room grew palpable, mirroring the anxiety of the Jewish community in Mainz. As the game progressed, Rabbi Shimon’s strategic foresight began to shine through, his pieces advancing with purpose and precision. Each move he made was a step towards vindication, a silent prayer in the language of chess.

Meanwhile, the community in Mainz continued their tefillos, their voices growing more intense, filling the shul with a powerful energy of hope and collective will. The children, not fully grasping the gravity of the situation, felt the weight of their parents’ fears and clung to their fathers’ hands.

The chess match approached its climax as Rabbi Shimon, with a deep breath, made a daring move, advancing his queen into the heart of the Pope’s defenses. The conversation in the room fell to an awed hush as the Pope’s counselors whispered among themselves, secretly marveling at the rabbi’s bold strategy.

“Checkmate,” Rabbi Shimon finally declared, his voice a soft echo that carried the weight of centuries of prayers and dreams. The silence that followed was a moment suspended in time, a bridge between despair and salvation.

In Mainz, the intense prayers in the shul reached a crescendo, a communal cry to the Heavens. Suddenly, an elderly sage known for his pious ways and ruach hakodesh declared, “Victory! Rabbi Shimon has won!”

A few days later, a messenger arrived confirming the news: Indeed, Rabbi Shimon had prevailed. The shul erupted in a cacophony of relief, tears and laughter. Children were hoisted into the air. The news spread like wildfire, igniting every heart with reinvigorated faith in Hashem’s hashgacha

A Hidden Message, A Father’s Hope

When Rabbi Shimon returned to Mainz, whispers began to circulate within the community, though Rabbi Shimon himself shared little. He had gone to

Rome burdened with a terrible secret. Years earlier, his son Elchanan had been kidnapped by Christians as a child, baptized, and raised in their faith. Despite this, Rabbi Shimon never lost hope of his return and even expressed his hope in a piyut that became part of the Ashkenazic nusach of Rosh Hashanah davening In this tefillah, there is an acrostic that begs Hashem, “May my son Elchanan live into the eternal world.” It was a hidden message about a father’s hope that his lost son return to him and the Jewish community.

Despite Rabbi Shimon’s silence, rumors spread that during his visit, something extraordinary had transpired beyond the chess victory. It was said that in the course of the match, as Rabbi Shimon and the Pope faced each other, they realized they were father and son.

The formalities of the chess game having concluded, the Pope invited Rabbi Shimon to converse in private for a few moments. In the secluded chamber, Rabbi Shimon and Elchanan stood facing each other. Trembling, Rabbi Shimon whispered, “Elchanan.” Elchanan, looking into the eyes that mirrored his own, felt a stir of recognition and a pull toward the man before him: his father. He remained still, locked in the gaze that sought to reconnect the severed bonds of the past.

Rabbi Shimon spoke softly, recounting stories of Elchanan’s childhood, invoking the memory of his mother, and the life that had been torn from him. Elchanan listened, the barriers built by years and doctrine beginning to crumble under the gentle assault of his father’s love and the undeniable truth in his words.

The conversation was halting at first, choked with emotion. Elchanan, caught between two worlds, felt an innate pull toward his father, a flicker of memory, and a sense of belonging reignited by the encounter.

As their time together dwindled, they shared a

rtuh kcsue kpbh vahnua

look, a moment of unspoken understanding and mutual respect. It was a farewell, filled with the hope of another meeting, under different circumstances, in a place where they could express their true feelings without fear.

Quietly, they parted. The door closed, leaving Elchanan alone with his thoughts and a tumultuous sea of emotion.

The Whispers of Mainz

When Rabbi Shimon returned to Mainz, he shared no details openly, aware of the dangers such a revelation could pose — not just to his own son, but to their entire community. Nevertheless, whispered rumors swept through Mainz about a father finding his long-lost son.

Not long after Rabbi Shimon’s return, a new whisper swept through the streets of Mainz: Elchanan had fled his life as a Christian and had returned to the Jewish faith.

This story, cloaked in the veils of secrecy and passed in hushed tones, became a legend with remarkable staying power in the Jewish world and is recounted in many books. Yet there never has been any evidence to confirm its veracity.

World Chess Champions

Throughout the history of chess, many players have been heralded as the strongest of their times without being given a formal title. The concept of organizing an international chess match or tournament to formally identify the world’s leading player didn’t come to fruition until the 1800s.

The Chess Connection

As the echoes of Rabbi Shimon’s story resonate through the centuries, let’s trace the history of chess, from its murky beginnings to modern chessboards, and from the hands of kings to the minds of contemporary chess masters. There is a surprising connection between the Yidden and chess.

A Brief History of Chess

The history of chess is long and complex, stretching back about 1,500 years. Its earliest form, known as

The World Chess Champion is the winner of the world championship, a title marking the best player in the world. While all world champions are grandmasters (a formal title introduced in 1950 that refers to the highest class of chess players), not all grandmasters become world champions.

There have been 21 undisputed World Chess Champions since the first one in 1886. A disproportionate number have been Jewish, including the first two: Wilhelm Steinitz and Emanuel Lasker. Lasker held the title of World Chess Champion for 27 years, from 1894 to 1921, which is the longest any champion has held the title.

chaturanga, originated in India around the 6th century CE. The game symbolized four branches of the military — infantry, cavalry, elephantry and chariotry — represented by pieces that evolved into the modern pawn, knight, bishop and rook, respectively.

From India, chess spread to Persia, where it was called shatranj, and after the Islamic conquest, it moved into the broader Muslim world, influencing various languages and cultures. The Moors brought chess to Spain and North Africa in the 10th century,

and from there, it spread throughout Europe. By the year 1000 CE, chess was known across the continent.

The Mad Queen

European chess evolved significantly from the 15th century onward. The transformation of the queen into the most powerful piece on the chessboard occurred during the late 15th century in what is often referred to as the “Mad Queen” or “Queen’s Leap” rev-

Shmuel Reshevsky, Chess Master

One of the greatest chess masters, Shmuel Reshevsky, lived right here in Monsey.

Known internationally as Samuel Reshevsky, he was born in Ozorkow, Poland, around the year 1911 into a family connected to the Gerrer Rebbes and descending from Rabbi Yonasan Eibschutz, zt”l. A chess marvel from childhood, Reshevsky learned the game at four. By age six he was playing simultaneous games against multiple opponents, memorizing their every move. He was celebrated as “Shmulik der vunder kind,” the wonder child.

In 1922, his family moved to America, where young Shmuel’s chess prowess quickly became renowned. At West Point Military Academy, the eleven-year-old outplayed seasoned officers. His chess exhibitions across the U.S. were phenomenal, and he lost only 8 out of over 1,500 games.

However, this demanding schedule led to a legal battle over his schooling. Julius Rosenwald, a co-owner of Sears-Roebuck, stepped in, ensuring Reshevsky’s education at the University of Chicago. After taking a seven-year hiatus from competitive chess, Reshevsky didn’t just return to the game; he excelled, securing the title of international grandmaster and winning prestigious tournaments worldwide.

Raised in an observant household, Reshevsky maintained the Jewish practices of his childhood, famously abstaining from playing chess on Shabbos. His faith was significant throughout his life; he even formed a connection with the Lubavitcher Rebbe while living in Crown Heights and committed to daily Torah study following a conversation with the Rebbe.

Reshevsky moved to Monsey, New York, in 1950, where he lived until his passing in 1992. Though never a World Champion, he remained a dominant force in chess, competing well beyond the typical age for grandmasters. Reshevsky’s legacy as a chess giant endures, marked by his unique blend of faith, intellect, and skill.

New Beginnings. DRESS FOR

olution. This period marked a significant evolution in the game of chess, primarily taking place in Europe.

The transformation of the bishop’s moves to what we know today also occurred during the late 15th century. Initially, the piece equivalent to the bishop was called the “elephant” and had very limited movement. It could leap exactly two squares diagonally, but it could not jump over intervening pieces. The modern move of the bishop, allowing it to travel any number of squares diagonally without leaping over other pieces, gained players much more tactical and strategic options, significantly altering the dynamics of the game.

Around the same time, chess became known as the “King’s Game” due to its popularity among the nobility. Chess sets from this period were often elaborate and luxurious, made from precious materials and serving as symbols of wealth and power. Kings and queens used chess as a diplomatic tool, offering lavish sets as gifts to other monarchs or important dignitaries. These gestures not only demonstrated their own cultural sophistication but also fostered alliances and mutual respect.

From Ivan the Terrible to Computer Chess

In Russia, Czar Ivan IV, known as Ivan the Terrible, was an avid chess player, though given his infamous temper, there’s a good chance that his opponents didn’t try too hard.

The Russians became widely recognized for their prowess in chess particularly after World War II. During the Cold War, chess was taken very seriously by the USSR as a sign of intellectual might. Many top Soviet players were employed by the state to play and win, promoting Soviet dominance.

In 1997, a monumental moment in the history of chess and technology occurred when IBM’s Deep Blue, a highly advanced chess-playing computer system, achieved what was once thought impossible: It defeated Garry Kasparov, the reigning World Chess Champion at the time. (Kasparov is a Russian Jew.) It was the first instance of a machine outsmarting a human champion in such a complex intellectual game, and it also sparked widespread discussions about the future of machine learning and the limits of artificial intelligence.

Chess in Jewish History

The relationship between Jews and chess is woven with many unconfirmed legends and historical anecdotes. One such legend suggests that Shlomo Hamelech engaged in chess matches with his advisor Benayahu ben Yehoyada. There’s even a version that credits Shlomo Hamelech with the invention of chess in the first place.

Chess’s journey into Jewish culture likely followed its spread from Persia or India, regions believed to be its birthplace. Chazal, well-versed in various forms of knowledge, possibly knew the game, though with different rules. This is hinted at in the Gemara (Shavuos 29a) that mentions “iskundarei,” interpreted by Rashi as “pieces of wood that a game is played with.” Some have identified these as chess pieces. In early medieval texts, such as Sefer Chassidim, chess is called “ashkuki” (probably from the Old French escacis, which Rashi mentions in Kesubos).

The merits and demerits of playing chess in general have been debated by rabbanim for centuries, as has the permissibility of playing chess on Shabbos. There have been authorities on both sides of the issue, so consult your own rav before playing!

“Ma, pleaaaase! It’s not fair! Why can’t I have it?”

The woman waiting in line in front of me at the toy store gave a long-suffering sigh.

“Yaakov, we already spoke about this. You have a perfectly good neck fan. There is no need to buy another one.”

“Yeah, but it doesn’t work anymore! Last week, I used it on the bus on the way to Liberty Heights Trampoline Park, and it didn’t help, not one single bit! I was boiling shmoiling the whole time. It’s the worst neck fan ever! I need a new one. I need it!”

Yaakov’s mother raised her eyebrows. “And how do you know that this neck fan is going to be any better?”

“Because I just know! This one has an on and off button, and my old one just has a switch. This is the best kind of neck fan.”

At this point, the second cashier motioned for me to step forward, and I reluctantly placed my items on the counter. I was so invested in the drama taking place, I would have gladly waited an extra five minutes to see how this scene would be resolved.

Unfortunately, the mother and son duo were still going at it as I left the store, but my sixth sense told me that Yaakov was going to be bringing a new neck fan to camp tomorrow.

As I turned on my car and backed out of my parking spot, I mentally swapped my “mom snood” for my “therapist wig.” As a mother, I can understand that it is far easier to simply buy what a child wants. But as a therapist, I can see how this mother may be making her life more difficult in the long run. I can see this situation playing itself out over and over again, because there wasn’t really anything wrong with the old neck fan!

But poor Yaakov is just another child to fall prey to what we call “black and white thinking.”

WHAT IS BLACK AND WHITE THINKING?

Black and white thinking is when we tend to see things in extremes; it’s either all good or all bad. It’s like looking at the world with only two colors, black and white, without seeing all the shades of color in between. Swap out the black and white for other extreme opposites, like “the best and the worst,” “everyone and no one,” or “love or hate.” You will find that all of these descriptive words fall under the “black and white thinking” category.

As a mother, I can understand that it is far easier to simply buy what a child wants. But as a therapist, I can see how this mother may be making her life more difficult in the long run

Yaakov’s old neck fan was the worst. Your highachieving teenager getting an 89% on a Chumash test means, “Ma, I’m the dumbest kid in my class,” and your boss hates you because he didn’t give you the raise you wanted.

While many kids tend to engage in this type of thinking, teenagers and adults do this as well. It plays out differently based on the stage of life you’re in and the situations you face in your day-to-day life.

THE NEGATIVE IMPACT OF THIS MINDSET

It’s important to recognize how this mindset will work against you. While you may think you are simply being realistic, in reality, you are setting the standard so high for yourself that you may never reach it! What a depressing way to live life!

Yaakov will never be happy enough with the neck fan he has because it’ll never be “the best one.” Something else will always come along after that and will appear fancier, stronger or easier to use. And if Yaakov can’t accept “good enough” for himself, then he’ll always be on the lookout for something more, something different.

I feel bad for his mother. I feel bad for him.

If your teenage daughter looks at an 89% on her Chumash test as “the worst mark ever,” then she will see herself as a failure instead of seeing her current mark as a small piece of a bigger picture. A healthier mindset would be to see an 89% as a good-enough

grade. Chances are that this was a particularly challenging test, and that she did well enough.

When you ask your boss for a raise and he doesn’t grant your request, it doesn’t mean that he hates you or your work ethic, it just means that it’s not the right time for the company to commit to that, and that asking at a later date may yield better results.

COGNITIVE DISTORTION AND HOW TO RECOGNIZE IT

In psychotherapy jargon, black and white thinking is also known as “all-ornothing thinking” (notice the extreme opposite there). This type of thinking is considered a “cognitive distortion.” A cognitive distortion can be explained as follows: Your brain is like a camera that takes pictures of your thoughts. Sometimes, however, the pictures come out blurry. Perhaps the people in the picture are stretched too thin, or too wide. The colors may be off too. Overall, the picture does not represent reality at all. These pictures are “cognitive distortions.” They make us see and interpret situations in a way that isn’t true or accurate.

Reading about and understanding what cognitive distortions are is one thing, but identifying them in your own thought processes is an entirely different challenge. Here are some tips to help you get started on this journey.

The first step is to notice the negative thoughts. Imagine that you were supposed to meet up with a friend, and she cancels on you at the last minute. This is not the first time she has done this to you. It’s only natural to find yourself thinking, “Ugh! Sara is completely unreliable, and every time we try to get together, she cancels on me! Either I can’t trust a word she says, or she really doesn’t like me, and she is trying to avoid spending time with me.”

While all of that may be true, it’s important to recognize the toxicity of thinking this way. You are either painting your friend Sara as a pathological liar, or yourself as an unlikable person. Neither of these places are a good place for your brain to hang out. It’s like refusing to turn the lights back on when the blackout is over and the electricity is working again,

As with any other chinuch effort, we must be role models for any ideas, concepts or skills that we want our children to learn

choosing to stay in the dark. Who does that?

The next step is to ask yourself how you can direct your thoughts into more neutral territory. Perhaps think something like, “Okay, this has happened before. Clearly Sara has a hard time with social commitments. While I love Sara for her usual kindness and sensitivity, I’m going to keep that in mind when we plan to meet up in the future.”

USING THIS SKILL IN YOUR PARENTING

As with any other chinuch effort, we must be role models for any ideas, concepts or skills that we want our children to learn. This means that we must model this type of neutral thinking and even go so far as to verbalize our thoughts to our kids.

An example of this would be the following. Yaakov really wants a new neck fan, the one that his campmates have. He claims the one that he has doesn’t work, because it failed to cool him off on a twohour bus ride. His mother’s response can be as follows:

PART 1 “Yaakov, that must have been so frustrating. You were hot and tired, and you had expected your fan to cool you off, and it didn’t. That’s so unfair!”

This type of talk is called validation. It shows that you can understand the other person’s feelings. It paves the way for you to have a smoother conversation, instead of a confrontation.

PART 2 “However, since we just bought the

TODDLERS AND THEIR TANTRUMS

Toddlers engage in all-or-nothing thinking almost exclusively. This is completely age-appropriate. In fact, it’s a sign of maturity when you’re able to reason with your almost three-year-old, and they do not immediately throw a tantrum when they don’t get what they want.

As a toddler matures — first becoming a child, then a teenager, and then finally an adult — this type of cognitive distortion can exacerbate feelings of anger, fear, sadness and many other negative emotions, turning the initial feeling into much more extreme versions of itself.

Anxiety and depression in children often manifest themselves as irritability, rigidity or an inability to problem-solve. A generally anxious five-year-old child who is taught that they must never swim beyond the rope that divides the deep and shallow ends of the pool since it is very dangerous, may have a complete meltdown when their older sibling happens to dip their toe in the water before the rope is properly in place. To everyone else, that reaction does not seem to fit the actual level of threat. But in this child’s mind, out of the pool equals safe, and in the pool is synonymous with pending doom, and so, she thinks that her sister is drowning!

Your son might come home from school one day, crying that his classmate grabbed the ball away from him during recess. He continues to cry, saying that he is being bullied by his classmate, and that all the other students hate him, including the rebbi. As the adult in the room, we can see how your son has interpreted this situation to an extreme degree. We can make the distinction between being bullied and being treated unfairly. But children often struggle to see these nuances, especially in social interactions.

Most of the time, the ability to see the shaded space between the black and the white is a skill children tend to develop as they grow older, without any special intervention on our part. What they do need, however, is for the adults in their life to make sure to model the language, the behavior and the right attitude for them.

other neck fan for you, we cannot buy another one so fast. The one you have now definitely does work; it just may not be as effective in a super hot environment. Remember how you used it at the barbecue in the park two weeks ago? Everyone wanted to borrow it from you!”

This part of the response is showing Yaakov the difference between something not working as well as he’d like, as opposed to actually being a piece of junk.

PART 3 “Yaakov, if you want to save money to buy this one, that’s your choice. You can do that.”

Kids tend to respond well when they are given options. They appreciate the feeling of autonomy. We parents just need to make sure that the options we are giving them are options that we are okay with having them choose.

Let’s go with another example.

Most of the time, the ability to see the shaded space between the black and the white is a skill children tend to develop as they grow older, without any special intervention on our part

Your daughter Leah comes home from school and goes straight to her room and closes the door. This is not like her. It’s clear that something is bothering her. You knock on her door and call her name.

“Leah, can you open the door? I have a surprise for you.” (You are holding Jolly Ranchers, her favorite. This may or may not be called bribery, but everything is allowed when you are dealing with teenagers.)

“Ma, I know you are holding Jolly Ranchers. That’s not a surprise.”

“Aw, you got me. Can you let me in anyway?”

Leah reluctantly opens the door.

“Sweetie, what’s going on? You don’t usually go to your room right when you get home. What’s wrong?”

Leah’s face falls. “I got an 89% on my Chumash test.”

“Wow! That’s great! I’m so proud of you!”

“Ma, no! It’s a horrible mark. Before my teacher handed the tests back, she said she was so proud of our class because the majority of girls got grades in the 90s. Which means everyone got great marks except for me! I’m the dumbest kid in my class!”

Your heart hurts for her. You know how hard she studied.

PART 1 “Oh, no, Leah. I feel so bad. I know how hard you studied for that test. That really does seem so unfair.”

As before, we always start off with validation. Additionally, one may feel the need to reach out and hug

their child at a time like this. (Do keep in mind that some teens do not like being hugged when they’re upset. Judge this case by case, child by child.)

PART 2 “I know I’d feel the same way if I were you. I wish your teacher hadn’t said anything. But Leah, 89% is a fantastic mark. It’s just one point less than 90%! I can’t explain why most girls got in the 90s and not you, but I’m sure you’re not the only one. This time you’re the one who got an 89% and someone else got a 95%, and when you take the next test, you might be the one to get the 95%. And you are not the dumbest kid in your class. That’s just how life is. This 89% does not reflect your overall intelligence in the slightest.”

As you are saying this to Leah, you notice that she is trying hard not to cry. Her face is twisting and twitching, and it’s clear she’s trying to hold back tears.

PART 3 “Leah, is it okay with you if I hug you now?”

Asking permission ensures that you don’t make the wrong move at the wrong time.

Leah practically falls into your arms. You stay like that for a moment or two, and then Leah says, “Thanks for that, Ma. Can I have the Jolly Ranchers now?”

YOUR DAILY DICTION

Don’t be fooled. It isn’t easy to teach yourself a whole new language, and it certainly doesn’t happen overnight. Learning to avoid extreme opposites in your daily diction will take time, but it will be worth it. Your kids will notice, your spouse will notice, and it will change the atmosphere around you.

Today, if you ask your ten-year-old daughter, “How was school today?” she might say, “Bad! It was bad! The lunch was gross.” But in a month from now, if you ask her the same question, she might say, “It was good, I just didn’t like the lunch. But otherwise, it was good.”

And then, when no one is looking, you can pat yourself on the back for being an awesome parent.

Judge us with compassion, and set before us a path of goodness. Seal for us a fate saturated with Your love.

We feel sullied, our innate purity trot upon by the earthly footsteps of the human beings that we are. But we console ourselves with the knowledge that You are here now, in our midst, to cleanse us. That You have granted us these days, and the day of Yom Kippur in particular, to purge us from the impurities that cling to us, from the blights our neshamos have incurred over the past year.

Like the mikvah that washes away all particles impure, Your Presence purifies each of us who accepts Your gift of teshuvah.

Though we may stray, we are Your children, bound to You for eternity. You are our Father, and we trust in that role, we lean into that embrace, and we know that as we stand before You, we are not mere servants, serving You out of obligation, but Your children, turning to You with love.

As the world, alluring and noisy, beckons, Your study halls reverberate with the kol Torah. Your People, busy and overwhelmed, shouldering immense burdens of responsibility and pain, shut out the static and immerse themselves in Your Word. Is there any music more beautiful to You than this? Behold Your People, behold your batei medrash, and shower us with all the blessings listed in the Torah to which we dedicate our lives.

* Annual percentage yield (APY) is effective as of 5/8/2023. $1,000 minimum balance to open the 7-month CD; $500 to open the 13-month CD. $1.00 minimum required to obtain stated APY. Withdrawals may result in earnings below the published APY. A penalty may be imposed for early withdrawal. IRA CDs are also eligible, for which minimum opening deposit is $250. This is a limited time offer and may be withdrawn at any time.

Who deserves Your mercy more than a Nation who emulates it? Behold your children whose hearts beat with the pain of their brothers. Watch Yidden who drop everything at a moment’s notice to aid their brother in need, who turn the world over for another Yid, who uphold the pillar of chesed upon which Your entire world stands. And let Your compassion overflow as we stand at the gates awaiting Your rachmanus.

There’s an unbreakable tie that binds You to us, Your Am Segulah. As we stand before You in remembrance, we take courage from the bris You made with our ancestors. We entered the covenant of Avraham Avinu to whom You promised that we will be Yours. Pay heed to our loyalty, our devotion to Your commandments. Remember us in favor.

We are the children of Avraham who were promised the land of Eretz Yisroel. Has the time not come?

The year behind us has taught us much about hardship and pain, resilience and transcendence. As we turn the page of this new year, we daven, we plead, we hope. We beseech You, our Father, our King: Pour only bracha into our days. Start this year with sweetness. Bentch us with a year of blessing. Unlock for us the gates of healing, of joy, and finally, the geulah sheleimah.

BITS OF WITS

SPELL IT OUT

SOS does not stand for “Save

Our Ship.” These three letters were chosen merely because of their simple Morse code representation (three dots, three dashes, three dots).

OOPS! SETTING COMMON

MISTAKES STRAIGHT

These two words are from the most commonly misspelled words in the English language: coolly — the adverb describing something done in a manner that lacks warmth, and which is commonly misspelled as cooly; and minuscule — a word whose meaning makes writers assume it would start with the word mini and therefore is commonly misspelled as miniscule.

PIECE

OF HISTORY

FARMING FOR CENTURIES

The Orchards of Concklin in Pomona (at the corner of Route 45 and South Mountain Road) is the oldest family-owned business in New York — and probably the oldest family fruit farm in all of the United States. It has been continuously farmed by eleven generations of the Concklin family for the past 307 years.

In 1711, Nicholas Concklin chose this place as his homestead, purchasing a 400-acre tract of the Kakiat Patent. Concklin was the one to name the area’s post office Pomona, after a Latin word for fruit, for the abundance of orchards in the area.

ADD TO DICTIONARY

Hot off the press!

The word zhuzh [‘zhuzh] was recently added to the Merriam-Webster dictionary as both a noun and verb. It means a small improvement, adjustment or addition that completes the overall look, taste or quality of something; or to improve the quality of something with one such small adjustment.

What can we do to zhuzh up the Bits and Wits column? Feedback is welcome!

WORDS YOU MAY NOT KNOW THAT SAY THINGS IN A WHOLE NEW WAY IT SHOULDN’T COME AS A SURPRISE THAT THE PRESIDENT WHO VETOED THE MOST LAWS IS THE VERY ONE WHO DEFIED CONVENTION BY OVERSTAYING HIS WELCOME IN THE OFFICE, TOO. FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT USED HIS VETO POWER 635 TIMES AS PRESIDENT. RECORDED! A LOYAL WARRIOR WILL RARELY WORRY WHY WE RULE.

Facetious is the only (common) word in the English language that has all five vowels in alphabetical order. And for those who count y as a vowel, facetiously does the trick!

WHAT DO YOU KNOW?

We welcome town trivia, historical facts and photos, and Torah-themed riddle submissions. We’d also love to hear if you have additional answers to our puzzles! Email comments@themonseyview.com to add your very own bits of wits. Please include your name and contact information.

HMMM WHATS HER SECRET?

I mean, whats her actual secret? how is it done?

The table is so beautifully set, her kids shine and look so adorable!

And the food OMG OMG how is it possible? I mean look at this food... Oh the smell ahhh feels so Yomtiv’dig.

She does work all day and look after a family of kids, so how? How is it actually done??

I need to find out her little secret...

When I first started OT at On the Ball, I was very shy and the thought of actually looking at someone’s eyes or being touched made me squirm. Sensory experiences were overwhelming for me so I avoided them.

I now talk to friends at recess and on the bus. My mommy is so happy that now, when she gives me a gentle hug and kiss, I can hug her back and rest my head on her shoulder. I wasn’t even so anxious at my cousin’s chasuna last week!
