TIP OFF

(Re: A Mentschlichkeit Tip, Inbox, Issue 480)

In response to the letter writer who decried people who take taxis and don’t tip, please be aware that many taxi drivers pay the taxi company a weekly fee for the privilege of driving for them, and keep all and any money they earn. In such cases, your entire fee goes to the driver. I see no reason to give an additional tip. (There is nothing wrong with giving a tip, either.)

Your declaration that someone who can’t afford to tip should not use taxis is very harsh and an inappropriate claim for a public forum.

HEALING AND HOPE

(Re: Give or Take, Issue 480)

Chanie Spira, you have undertaken to explore a topic that is, at best, shoved under the rug, and at worst, distorted and denigrated. The experience of a divorcee is excruciating and misunderstood. Unfortunately, divorcees are sometimes shunned or shamed for circumstances they would never have chosen and could never have imagined would happen to them.

There are organizations like Recharge and My Extended Family that encourage and support the dignity and integrity of divorced women, and due to these and others like them, there has been a positive shift in awareness of the needs of the divorced woman and her family.

In the serial Give or Take, the author manages to artfully and compassionately portray some of the challenges and dynamics that make up the lives of divorced women. Stories like this one bring awareness and insight to the community. The vehicle of a fiction story is a brilliant, nonthreatening way to educate the community and will, b’ezras Hashem, lead to understanding and healing.

Thank you to Chanie Spira and The Monsey View for a fantastic read — on so many levels.

A Local Divorcee

AT THE RIGHT TIME

(Re: The Heavenly Bagel, Issue 480)

Thank you so much for providing such quality reading material. Wednesday is the highlight of my week. After I put my children to sleep and clean up the kitchen, I settle down on the couch with The Monsey View to read and relax.

This week’s issue, about melaveh malka, was absolutely beautiful. When I read the story about the woman who had a crazy hectic Motzei Shabbos on Erev Sukkos and almost didn’t wash that week, until a delicious tuna bagel showed up at her door, I was reminded of an interesting concept that someone once shared with me. She said that doing something ruchnius’dig is l’maaleh min hazman; you’ll never have less time in life because you did this mitzvah. I try to live with this mindset and see it play out time and again. For example, the night I babysat my niece, my children behaved unusually well. Or when I took the time to daven properly in the morning, making supper took extra quick.

I’ve seen the opposite, too. Sometimes when I turn down the opportunity to do a mitzvah because of lack of time, I’ll see later on that I really did have the time. Once, my mother asked if I had the time to make her a kugel, and

Name Withheld

I unfortunately said no because it was such a busy Friday. Shortly after, my son spilled a bottle of oil all over himself, his clothes and the kitchen floor, and the cleanup was very time-consuming… Time I could’ve used to make my mother a kugel.

A QUICK LIMERICK

Here’s a limerick of my own in response to the Chanukah poetry contest.

EASY AND SWEET

(A Sweet Solution, Inbox, Issue 472)

Regarding the discussion about opening wrappers on Shabbos, I’ve noticed that nosh with Dayan Reb Eckstein’s hechsher are easy to open on Shabbos.

YOUR SAY

NUTS OVER DOUGHNUTS

When my cleaning lady asked me if Chanukah is the holiday of the doughnuts, it gave me pause.

When I was a child, my mother, a”h, would make doughnuts once or twice over Chanukah, and we kids polished them off that night because they didn’t taste as good the next day. My mother-in-law, a”h, had a milchig recipe, which we were also treated with every year. But this Chanukah, I was in a bakery to buy some bread, and I couldn’t believe my eyes. The doughnut display featured doughnuts of all kinds of different flavors, including razzle, strawberry shortcake, oreo, and lotus, and some other unfamiliar and unpronounceable flavors. And that was only the pareve selection!

My son tells me there are even alcohol-infused donuts. When did the simple minhag of eating food fried in oil evolve into this mass gluttony? Sure, it’s okay to treat the children on Chanukah, but let’s not get carried away and make the toful into an ikar. Chanukah, of all times, represents the triumph of spirituality over physicality. This display of indulgence is ironic and tragic.

The Future of Wellness in a Patch

A NEURO TECHNOLOGY BREAKTHROUGH

Have you heard about the patches that so many people are talking about? It almost sounds too good to be true!

Well, that’s exactly what I thought when I was approached through my Playful Parenting platform online about patches that could help Kids with focusing issues.

As a Child and Family Therapist for over 20 years, I’m always on the lookout for something that can help my clients. I’ve taken many trainings over the years to bring the best therapy modalities to our heimishe community and recommend products or services that I believe can support my clients in addition to therapy.

I was quite intrigued at how patches could help a child 24/7 to optimize their neurology, especially because many parents don’t want to put their kids on medication. After researching the neurotechnology behind the patches, I felt comfortable recommending them to clients.

..........Around the same time, I was struggling with long covid for almost 2 1/2 years and was unable to walk for 3 months due to covid attacking a part of my brain that controlled my ability to walk. I had been to many doctors within mainstream and holistic practices and had not yet been able to find a solution to my covid related health issues.

Curious to see if this company had any products that could help my personal health challenges, I ordered the patches, and as they say, the rest is history! My walking was restored and got better and better as the weeks passed. Within a month, I got back my energy and vitality back that had been lost with long covid. After several months, I stopped getting sick all the time. My clients NOTICED me walking again and asked me what I did that finally improved my condition. My family and friends NOTICED and asked what I had found that finally gave

me the yeshuah I so desperately needed. Of course, I let them know about the patches!

Now, 17 months into wearing these patches, I continue to see improvements in my health and have gathered compelling evidence through “before and after” QEEG brain mappings how the patches are rebuilding my brain and body. For me, it’s a tremendous miracle and I am so grateful to Hashem for sending me this simple yet super effective refuah.

As I re-entered normal everyday life and going to simchas, everyone wanted to try the patches that had given me back my health! My clients were interested too. I brought the patches into my therapy practice and started testing various combinations of patches with children, teens and adults.

Parents started reporting improvements with their children's emotion regulation, and symptoms associated with ADHD, anxiety, depression and learning disabilities. Teenagers self reported improvements with anxiety and depression and wearing these patches improved their ability to do trauma work. They also shared how they had increased ability to manage their school stressors and mental health. Mothers shared how they woke up with

more energy despite sleeping less and how they were able to manage daily stress more effectively. I saw an improvement in my ability to help my clients faster with many issues when they wore certain patches. Trauma work became more manageable as clients were no longer in “ fight and flight” during therapy sessions.

In addition, friends were sharing their stories about how combinations of patches were helping their energy levels, reducing their stress, enhancing pain relief for various aches and pains, and helping their little kids with cold and virus symptoms. It got to a point where the word went around town that every family should have the DEFEND patch for seasonal immune support, and FREEDOM patch for pain as required. I also got great feedback about the PEACE patch being a game changer for stress for kids and adults. And now, mothers are sharing how these drug free patches; specifically LIBERTY, VICTORY and FREEDOM patches are helping support childbirth and recovery. As mothers share their stories, more and more people are willing to give these patches a try.

With all these amazing results, I started telling people to leave testimonials on my hotline 9299924453 (option 2,2,2) so we could all start networking how the patches help specific issues.

SO WHAT ARE THESE PATCHES AND HOW DO THEY WORK?

You may have heard about neurofeedback, a form of biofeedback that trains the brain by measuring brain waves and providing feedback signals to the person. With the neurostimulation patches, there is no active process needed. You do not need to focus on regulating the brain regions you want to work on or actively think about the areas where pain might be or try to relax muscles in a given area. Once you put the patches on your skin, a huge network of touch receptors

will pick up the specific pattern from the neurostimulation patch just like the skin senses heat, cold, pain, etc. Your brain picks up this information within 715 seconds and then will get right to work to bring your brain and body into balance /homeostasis.

It is important to understand that every single person’s neurology is different and therefore every person’s experience will be specific to how their brain seeks to create homeostasis and balance for their brain and body. I’ve noticed that a small percentage of people see relief almost instantly. For most people, they will see some beginning shifts in their personal health and wellness within several weeks. For some, this may be a longer process to see the benefits they are looking to get with these patches.

HEALING IS POSSIBLE!

Imagine taking 10 seconds in the morning to put on patches for you and your children to give YOUR brain a tool to help YOU and YOUR FAMILY! Imagine having this AMAZING tool in your hands to improve any therapy or health treatment you do for yourself by up to 30%.

The SuperPatch company is very careful not to promise to treat or cure any disease. What they do share results that are demonstrated by their scientific research on the patches. There’s over 3 years of research data on how the patches optimize the brain using qEEG brain mapping studies. The company also has studies published in medical journals such as The Journal of Anesthesia and Pain Research, The International Journal of Family Medicine & Healthcare and International Journal of Research in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. The company has additional ADHD and metabolism studies ongoing at this time.

HOW CAN OUR COMMUNITY LEARN MORE?

I’ve spent many hours consulting with several doctors and a Professor of Neuroscience and Behavioral Psychology to bring information to our heimishe community offline. My Playful Parenting Telecourse hotline, 9299924453 (option 2,1), now includes a separate option for “ Patch Solutions” (option 2,2) a Kosher offline option for people to listen to patch information, lots of interviews, heimishe testimonials and replays from LIVE calls.

You can now speak to my team of associates who are knowledgeable about the patches and get same day pick up as well. If you are a doctor, nurse, therapist, OT, PT, health practitioner, special education provider or tutor and want more info, please call and leave a message. I will be happy to talk to you about how to integrate the patches into your practice and work with children, teenagers and adults.

If you are on WhatsApp, I have a WhatsApp chat support group to answer questions. To join, use this link https://chat.whatsapp.com/Dnw9ag5BiQb2h1NthqMsMU

WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE MOST IN A NEIGHBOR?

Neighbors who are kind, honest and considerate (in terms of lending items, babysitting, and keeping the mess and noise down)

Neighbors who respect my privacy and boundaries

Neighbors who have kids the same age as my kids so they can be friends

Neighbors who can become my own friends

Neighbors who have similar hashkafos as me

I would appreciate it if they wouldn’t wash laundry late at night or very early in the morning. Also, if they would clean up the litter outside that falls from their porch. – Esty

I’m lucky to have neighbors who are basically superheroes. They’ve taken my kids off the bus, lent me everything from sugar to sanity, and put up with me. My downstairs neighbor is especially awesome, and I’m so glad she’s not just a neighbor, but a good friend, too. – S. #211

I appreciate the kindness that neighbors do for each other. Whether it is organizing meals for after birth or helping out in some other way, having nice neighbors around is the best thing. – A Reader

When they can serve as an inspiration, sounding board, mothering support group and good friend. With my limited time to socialize, having nice neighbors is a huge and convenient game-changer! I also appreciate a neighbor who’s nice and helpful with lending and babysitting. – A Reader

I realized how much I appreciated my neighbor only after I moved away… Whether it was borrowing a little milk or salt (it’s a gift!), taking a kid off the bus, enjoying her company or just plain seeing her smile — I miss my neighbor! – A Reader

Looking for a plumber, electrician , singer, musician, long-distance car service, handyman, contractor, or party planner? Stop calling your neighbor, friends, or shviger! Just text Rebbe Servease , and be connected with the professionals you need within minutes!

The main thing I appreciate is solid people with strong hashkafos. It’s perfectly okay if their hashkafos aren’t exactly like mine; as long as they’re serious people with middos and mentschlichkeit, we’re thrilled to be their neighbors! – T.L.

What I appreciate most about my neighbors is that they can take my kids off the bus if I’m running a few minutes late. – R.F.

When I was married for about five weeks, my next-door neighbor asked me to watch her baby for a few minutes while she ran out for a quick errand. I remember thinking it an odd request. Shortly after, she came by to borrow a few eggs. It was the best thing she could’ve done for me, because from then on, I felt totally comfortable knocking on her door to borrow food items or ask for small favors. –Chany M.

It’s so validating when you open your door and I can see that your house is also flying. – A Reader

Honesty! Because if you’ll be saying yes every time I ask for a favor, how will I know if you’re really up to it?

– A Reader

I appreciate those neighbors who mind their own business. Good fences make great neighbors. It’s not necessary to ask what I’m making for supper each night, where my kids’ outfits are from, or what’s in that UPS package. There’s a fine line between friendliness and downright nosiness.

– A Reader

Someone who doesn’t blink even if it’s the fourth time I’m borrowing an item in the past hour. – A Reader

A good neighbor gladly lends anything you’re missing, happily takes your child off the bus when needed, but doesn’t nose around where you wouldn’t want her to. – A Reader

I appreciate a neighbor who is welcoming and friendly. I doubly appreciate a neighbor who becomes a friend. – P.G.

A neighbor who greets and smiles, but doesn’t meddle and peddle. – A Reader

My neighbors will end up being the ones who know the most about my life. I would love it if they could be as non-judgmental as possible and accept my family the way we are. – Your Neighbor

Good neighbors have window shades and know when to pull them up or down. – A Reader

I appreciate it when you tell me “No, I can’t babysit for you tonight. ” This way, when you tell me that you can, I know you mean it. I appreciate your company when we sit out together and wait for the bus together. I appreciate your noticing that my child is wearing something new. I appreciate your sending your children over to play with mine. I appreciate that you pretend you don’t notice that something is going on in my life. – A Reader

A neighbor who doesn’t judge me by the noise she hears through the walls/ floors. – A Reader

I’d love neighbors who are non-smokers so that I can open my windows and enjoy the fresh, clean air. You only value this once you experience the opposite — when your house is filled with secondhand smoke whenever a window is cracked open. – A Reader

What I appreciate most in a neighbor is discretion. You saw/heard my kid have a meltdown, myself committing a faux pas or a similar horror? Pretend you didn’t. –C.N.G.

Children who are neighbors inevitably become good friends, so a neighbor I would trust with my child in the house is a great neighbor. – A Reader

Just give me my space, and you’re my favorite neighbor. – B.S.

Anyone living next to me shouldn’t be too organized, because I need them to borrow things from me so that I can borrow from them without feeling completely incompetent. – A Reader

I like neighbors who are easygoing, mentchlich and clean. Also, who have kids of the same age and similar hashkafos. –A Reader

I’d love someone who knows their boundaries and who has a good influence on my home. Being a good friend and schmoozer doesn’t hurt either. – A Reader

With so many neighbors filling our apartment building, I could only wish I had no neighbors at all! – A Reader

PARSHAS VAYECHI

A Diamond of a Deal

In his brachos to the Shevatim, Yaakov blesses

Yissachar, “Yissachar [will bear the rigors of Torah study] like a strong donkey bears its load… For he saw that a resting place is good, and that the land is pleasant; and he bowed his shoulder to bear [the burden of rigorous Torah study], and thereby do his duty like a faithful laborer” ( Bereishis 49:14–15).

How interesting! When Yissachar saw that a resting place is good and the land is pleasant, was that a reason to bow down to bear the load? It should be reason to sit back, release all the pressure of work, and relax! Why would recognizing the value of menuchah bring Yissachar to buckle down and get to work?

CHAIM ZIPPED UP HIS CARRY-ON and glanced around his hotel room to make sure he hadn’t forgotten anything. Preparing himself a coffee from the coffee bar in the suite, he sat down in an armchair. He had another hour before he needed to head off to the airport.

His moment of relaxation was disturbed by a knock at the door. Chaim hesitated before pulling himself out of his seat. Who could be looking for me? It’s probably room service. Can’t they wait until I leave?

Chaim looked through the peephole. The visitor was a supplier he’d dealt with in the past. As part of his work in the diamond industry, Chaim was a frequent visitor to this city, and he always stayed at this same luxurious hotel. It seems he must have dropped this piece of information to this dealer once.

Chaim opened the door.

“I’m sorry for disturbing you here,” the man said. “But it seems I missed you at the diamond exchange today. I know you

must be leaving soon…”

“I’m actually on my way to the airport in less than an hour,” Chaim replied. “How can I help you?”

“I have a steal of a deal for you,” the diamantaire replied. “You’ve never seen such a beautiful stone!” There was something about the man’s tone that alerted Chaim that the dealer was desperate to sell.

“Look, I’d love to buy,” Chaim said. “But I’m so sorry. I’ve already spent all the funds I designated for purchasing on this trip.”

Knowing that a well-to-do businessman like Chaim certainly had another few dollars in his back pocket, the diamond dealer didn’t back down. “You’ve never seen such a brilliant gemstone. All C’s! And I’ll give it to you for way less than its value. I need to sell.”

Chaim thought for a moment. He did have a couple of dollars in his wallet. But he’d allocated that money for a last-minute upgrade to business class and a hotel room for the night during his stopover.

The diamantaire tried a different tactic. He opened his case and removed the diamond. It was indeed a beauty. The cut, the clarity, the carat, the color — it truly was one of a kind. And here the man was offering it at a below-market rate. The offer was too tempting for Chaim to turn down.

I can’t leave this diamond here, Chaim thought. But I need to get home… After several moments of consideration, Chaim was decided. I’ll forgo my regular upgrade to business class. I’ll just have to manage two long flights squashed in a narrow economy seat. Perhaps I’ll take a motel room for the night instead of the five-star places I’m used to. I think I can survive such a place for one night… This deal will make it all worth it.

The deal was closed.

Chaim rushed to the airport and stood in line with all

the economy passengers; no zooming through VIP lines this time. After a long, tiring flight, Chaim checked himself into a rundown motel that didn’t even offer a decent shower. The following morning, he returned to the airport for the last leg of his trip home. He sat in his seat at the back of the plane, drained yet satisfied. It had been a successful trip.

Just before landing, a familiar passenger walked by; it was Chaim’s neighbor.

“Ah gutten, Reb Chaim!” the man exclaimed. “What brings you to this little, squishy seat at the back of the plane? I think it would suit you more to sit in business class, with all the other businessmen like you!”

Chaim couldn’t resist. “Actually, I usually do. But this time, I downgraded.” And Chaim proceeded to share the story of his last-minute deal.

“I hear,” his neighbor said. “But isn’t this a disappointment? You know what business class is like. How can you sit like this, in these conditions?”

“I’ll tell you the truth,” Chaim replied. “It’s even harder than you think. But I have my pouch of diamonds right here. And every time I feel low, I just pat my pouch and remind myself what’s waiting for me when I get home…”

* * * * *

When Yissachar recognized that “a resting place is good, and the land is pleasant,” it was not referring to This World, but rather to Olam Haba.

Learning Torah comes with challenges; it isn’t always easy. What gives the Yid the ko’ach to continue and invest in his learning despite the hardships?

Reminding oneself of the menucha, the eternal peace, and the reward he is preparing for himself in the World to Come, gives one the strength to continue to learn, toil and handle the hardships that come along with Torah learning. It’s all worthwhile!

Because Yissachar saw that eternal peace is good, he was empowered to take on the load of Torah study.

Confusion and Costs as Congestion Pricing Kicks In

Congestion pricing, with its $9 tolls for drivers entering Manhattan south of 60th Street, went into effect this past week, at 12:01 a.m. on January 5.

Coming together with the increased Port Authority tolls at the George Washington, Goethals and Bayonne bridges; the Outerbridge Crossing; and the Lincoln and Holland tunnels, the new toll adds insult to injury for those who will be forced to dig deeper into their pockets for the privilege of making their way into Manhattan’s Congestion Relief Zone.

The $9 toll is in effect between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. on weekdays, and 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on weekends, dropping to $2.25 at other times. That price rises by approximately 50% for those without E-ZPass, with higher rates in effect for larger vehicles.

There are limited exemptions to the toll. Those living within the Congestion Relief Zone will only be charged once per day to enter and exit the area. Also excluded are those whose routes take them directly from the West Side Highway or the FDR Drive directly onto certain crossings, unless they utilize city streets.

But the details of those exemptions are anything but simple. According to the MTA, drivers taking the FDR Drive to the Brooklyn Bridge, or traveling from the Brooklyn Bridge to the northbound FDR Drive without entering the city’s street grid, will be spared the toll. Also evading congestion pricing will be cars making their way directly between West Street and the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, while vehicles using any other path in and out of the tunnel will be required to pay the toll.

Many motorists traveling Manhattan’s highways will be forced to pay up, including drivers exiting the Brooklyn Bridge to access the southbound FDR via Pearl Street, and all motorists utilizing the Lincoln, Holland and Midtown tunnels. And while drivers who travel the Queensboro Bridge via the FDR will be subject to congestion pricing, those taking the upper level from Queens who exit onto 62nd Street will not.

The one saving grace for tunnel drivers is a $3 credit that will be in effect at all of New York City’s tunnels for EZPass drivers during peak hours.

Among those who will be impacted by congestion pricing are Hatzalah drivers who use their private vehicles to answer calls within the targeted area. A letter written by Hatzalah CEO Rabbi Yehiel Kalish that appeared on BoroPark24 warned volunteers that,

currently, only its ambulances are exempted from congestion pricing, although efforts are underway to secure similar privileges for drivers going on calls.

“Yes, Chevra Hatzalah has been working with the governor, the DOH and MTA on exemptions, and when that process is complete, if you have an exemption, you will be notified,” wrote Rabbi Kalish in the January 3 letter. “However, if you have not been notified by our office, it is safe to assume that you will be charged the appropriate toll if you enter the congestion pricing zone for any reason — even to answer a call.”

New Minimum Wage Rates Take Effect

Higher minimum wages went into effect in 21 states nationwide last week, with rates in some parts of New York exceeding $16 per hour.

Hourly workers in New York City, Long Island, and Westchester are now earning $16.50 per hour, with those elsewhere in the Empire State seeing their wages increasing to $15.50 per hour. New York joins California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Washington and Washington, D.C., in hitting or topping the $15 per hour wage mark.

The federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour remains in effect in 20 states, and while that number has held steady since 2009, annual minimum wage hikes are here to stay in New York, at least for now. The minimum wage will jump another 50 cents on January 1, 2026, with additional increases starting in 2027 to be based on the three-year moving average of the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers for the Northeast Region.

Chaverim and Hatzolah Respond to 82,000 Calls in 2024

Monsey volunteers rose to the occasion in record numbers this past year, with both Chaverim of Rockland and Hatzoloh of Rockland County reporting impressive year-end statistics.

Hatzoloh responded to 17,873 calls in 2024, with 8,864 patients transported to hospitals and 284,770 miles driven. Chaverim received its highest-ever number of calls in 2024, with 64,135 reported, an increase of 11,132 over the previous year.

Both groups racked up a call for their 2025 numbers this weekend when a hiker fractured an ankle after slipping on the ice at Harriman State Park. Members of Chaverim’s Search and Rescue team braved frigid temperatures as they came to the aid of the injured hiker along with New York State Forest Rangers and the New York State Park Police. After stabilizing the injury and warming the hiker, who had been sitting on a sheet of ice while waiting for help to arrive, Chaverim members brought the injured hiker out of the park on a specialized stretcher to where Rockland Hatzoloh members were waiting with an ambulance to arrange medical transport.

Zos Chanukah Neis, as No Injuries Reported in Double Wind Collapses

Zos Chanukah was a time of miracles in the greater Monsey area, as high winds caused two significant crashes in two separate locations, with no injuries reported in either incident.

The first incident took place on Truman Avenue in New Square, when three

cherry pickers holding a large sign for a hachnasas Sefer Torah fell onto two parked cars at approximately 4:45 p.m. Despite the fact that hundreds of village residents were on the street at that time heading to davening, no one was injured when the heavy equipment fell over due to strong winds.

Just hours later, sustained wind gusts knocked over an electrical pole four and a half miles away, in the Evergreen Uptown parking lot on Route 202. The pole crashed onto several empty parked cars, with no one in the lot sustaining any injuries.

IRS Rebates Coming to 1 Million Taxpayers

There’s good news coming in the mail for an estimated one million Americans, who will be receiving rebates for as much as $1,400 per person from the Internal Revenue Service.

The money will be going to taxpayers who were eligible for the COVID-related federal stimulus payments in 2021, but didn’t claim the credit on their tax returns, or received less than the full amount.

Those who qualify for the payment will be notified by mail and will have the funds automatically deposited into the bank account listed on their 2023 tax return, or sent by check to the address on file with the IRS. According to the Associated Press, the IRS will be distributing approximately $2.4 billion in payments by the end of January.

Most Americans have already received the stimulus credit, known as the Economic Impact Payment, from the federal government. Americans who have yet to file their 2021 tax returns may still qualify for the credit if they file their tax return and claim the Recovery Rebate Credit by the April 15, 2025, filing deadline, even if they had minimal or zero income in 2021.

Recap: Ezriel doesn’t want Perela to take the job at Prance. Kaily’s boss asks her to commit to working from the office more.

She had fifteen minutes until she had to leave to the rehab.

Kaily ran around her apartment, throwing food into her bag — a yogurt, a granola bar and, of course, chocolate — all while trying to concentrate on Jerry and her calendar.

Things were both easier and harder since her mother had been transferred to rehab. The rehab center didn’t allow visitors to sleep over, but that made it even more important that someone be with her mother all day.

But four people could only do what four people could do.

As she reviewed her schedule, her two brothers’ schedules, and Perela’s schedule, she knew that there was no way for Jerry from Lake Harbor Marina Fishing Expeditions to accommodate her availability.

Unless he offered midnight cruises.

But, alas, he didn’t. He operated on a very regular nineto-five schedule, with the option of one-hour or two-hour tours.

“Jerry, what do you have left for the week of the twentysecond?”

The week of the twenty-second was the week before Rosh Hashanah. The last possible week for a Sisters on the Go trip.

Since the Shabbaton, Kaily hadn’t planned a single event. Not even a kumzitz or a game night. The shifts, the scheduling and the juggling didn’t leave her with an inch of headspace to think outside the immediate crises.

So she was to blame, apparently, that the Sisters OTG events had stopped. Of course she was to blame. Who else?

She was only wondering why Mira wasn’t badgering her. It wasn’t like her to buy her excuse of being busy. But it seemed that, for once, Mira understood that she couldn’t possibly do more than she was doing.

Mira was a great partner, a great person. But asking Mira for anything involving logistics was like asking an ant to move a mountain.

SO SHE WAS TO BLAME, APPARENTLY, THAT THE SISTERS OTG EVENTS HAD STOPPED. OF COURSE SHE WAS TO BLAME. WHO ELSE?

“I HAVE TO GO INTO THE OFFICE. OTHERWISE I’LL LOSE MY JOB.” KAILY TRIED TO KEEP HER VOICE EVEN

But Nechy Koth had sent her a heartrending text yesterday. How she could barely get through the day, and only the Sisters OTG events kept her going. So now Kaily was trying to book a late summer fishing cruise to somehow compensate for the last few weeks — and for the next few weeks. Maybe even forever.

“We have one slot left on Wednesday. Take it or leave it.” Jerry’s voice had lost its friendly customer service tone and had taken on one of exasperation.

Wednesday. Of course she couldn’t make it, and she couldn’t even blame Perela for it. She could blame her boss for choosing Wednesday as his day on the road.

It was the cruise or her job.

“Nothing else? Maybe… Thursday?” Although Thursday wouldn’t work for many of the working women in her group. It was a long-established fact that no boss allowed Thursday off, ever. And those who didn’t work all had cleaning ladies on Thursday.

Jerry was growing impatient. “Take it or leave it!” he repeated.

Take it or leave it.

“I’ll take it,” she said tremulously.

Within moments, Mira’s voice trilled over the conference line. “Sisters, are you ready? In the spirit of Rosh Hashanah, join us on a fishing cruise next week Wednesday. May it be a ‘heady’ year, and may we share only good news.”

Amen, Kaily whispered as she hung up and went to read all the thank-yous that were streaming in.

The vans were leaving at 8:45 a.m., and Mira showed up in Kaily’s kitchen at 8:00 a.m. to help with packing up the breakfasts. She was wearing a scarf the color of the sea, and her eyes were dancing.

“Kaily!” She hugged her warmly. “How did you think of breakfast? Look at these cute bags!” She unfolded one paper bag. “And I thought you could barely breathe!”

“I really don’t have a moment to breathe, but this is my treat,” Kaily said.

She had bought pretty picnic-style gingham paper bags and matching little ribbons that she’d tied over small containers and portion cups.

“The girls are gonna love it!” Mira said after the first one was done. And then she became quiet. Quickly, efficiently and quietly, they filled the bags with baguettes, spreads, cheesecake and iced coffee. Then Kaily stapled on a little poem about fish and Rosh Hashanah.

Kaily was terrified of telling Mira that she wouldn’t be joining the trip, and she was grateful that Mira, too, was pensive.

“I can’t wait,” Mira finally said as she stood up and

What to do this Sunday?

brushed the crumbs into the garbage of Kaily’s little kitchen. “The water, the sky! Bliss! Though I could do without the fish.”

Kaily nodded, slightly less enthusiastic. What Mira didn’t know couldn’t hurt her. Yet.

“So it’s the last trip of the year,” Mira said carefully, that same pensive look filling her eyes.

Kaily nodded. “Another year passed,” she said slowly, sadly. She gathered the extra cheesecake and transferred it to a bakery container.

Nechy was waving at them. It was time to greet the girls.

* * * * *

“You brought Yanky?” Roiza’s heart expanded as soon as she spied Perela at the doorway.

She hadn’t seen a baby in weeks. How she longed to stroke Yanky’s cheek! She straightened in her chair and stretched her arms, trying not to notice her right hand lagging behind her left.

Yanky eyed her warily, and Perela coaxed him.

SHE CRINGED AS THE NURSE WHEELED HER DOWN THE HALLS. A BURDEN. HOW THE ROLES HAD REVERSED. SHE WAS LIKE YANKY, BEING PUSHED LIKE A BABY DOWN THE HALLWAY

Mira watched her carefully. “Who knows what next year will bring?” She opened the door and started carrying the bags outside. Kaily spied Nechy walking up the block. It was now or never.

But Mira was talking quickly. “Kaily, I want you to know… that…” She cut her off. “Mira, I’m not coming on the trip.”

Mira’s eyes opened wide. “What do you mean?”

“I have to go into the office. Otherwise I’ll lose my job.” Kaily tried to keep her voice even. She picked up more bags and continued walking. She wasn’t in the mood of having to defend and explain.

But Mira didn’t try to do any of that. She just looked at Kaily, eyes twin pools of empathy. “Wow… that’s tough,” was all she managed.

Nechy was only a few yards away. What had Mira wanted to tell her? She looked at her friend, at her smooth, open face. “What was it you wanted to tell me?” she whispered.

“Nothing… Just that… I can do a shift, if you need.”

Kaily narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “Thanks. I’ll let you know when we need someone to take over.”

“Look, Yanky! Bobby!”

“Baba,” Yanky babbled. Perela gently placed him on her mother’s lap, and Roiza grasped him tightly and planted a kiss onto his hair. She didn’t remember him being this heavy.

“I wish I had a lolly to give him. Which Bubby doesn’t have one?” Roiza fretted.

“I came prepared,” Perela grinned. She fished in her bag and slipped a lollipop to her mother.

Roiza held it out like a winning lottery ticket, and Yanky grabbed it, looking at her with pure adulation. If only it would be this easy to make more people happy with a lollipop! Especially the lollipop-sucker’s mother. Did she always have this… cloud of discontent on her face?

“The weather is gorgeous,” Perela said. “Maybe we should head to the garden?”

Roiza nodded, even though she was terrified. She hadn’t felt the air on her face in weeks, hadn’t felt the sun warm her back since she’d been imprisoned in the hospital.

Perela took Yanky, strapped him in his stroller, and went to get the nurse.

She cringed as the nurse wheeled her down the halls. A burden. How the roles had reversed. She was like Yanky, being pushed like a baby down the hallway.

But it was worth it. The garden was small, yet beautiful. And the nurse parked her wheelchair next to a bench. Perela parked the stroller right next to her.

“IT’S ME,” SHE SAID SADLY. “I’M THE ONE KEEPING YOU FROM TAKING THE JOB”

“I haven’t been outside in weeks,” Roiza said. Her voice was clogged with emotion. Little things, little pleasures could not be taken for granted anymore.

“There’s this Rosh Hashanah smell outside,” Roiza said, sniffing. “I can almost smell a honey bundt.”

“Uh-huh, yum,” Perela agreed. “But don’t mention Yom Tov. I didn’t cook a thing yet.” Again, that unhappy cloud around her.

Roiza looked at her daughter wistfully. “I wish I could help you!” Was Yom Tov worrying her?

“No… Chas v’shalom. I never start earlier, and we never go hungry,” Perela said lightly.

Roiza wasn’t going to remind her that last year she’d sent over all the sides and round challos, and of course, her honey bundt.

“And shopping is easier this year,” Perela continued. Then stopped.

Roiza frowned. Shopping. Shopping. Why should it be easier?

“Why is shopping easier this year?” Roiza asked. She watched a butterfly sniff one of the hydrangeas from the bush. It looked so happy.

Perela hesitated. “Whatever. Nothing major, really. But I met this lady, Tziri Blass, from a kids’ clothing store. She wants me to join her team. She has a few stores plus she manufactures her own brand. She gave me samples for the kids for Yom Tov.”

This was it. Roiza was sure. The way Perela rushed through the words, trying to make it sound like it barely mattered to her. She knew her baby.

“Wow!” Roiza whistled. “You always had an eye for fashion. It’s perfect for you. Nu?”

“Well…” Perela paused. She unstrapped Yanky from the stroller and held him on her lap. “I’m busy with the kids, keneina hora,” she said lamely, pointing to Yanky.

“You make time for the things you like,” Roiza said.

Perela looked uncomfortable.

It hit Roiza: She was the one who was keeping Perela from doing what she loved.

This was her life now. She was a burden.

“It’s me,” she said sadly. “I’m the one keeping you from taking the job.”

Perela shook her head quickly. Too quickly. “Ezriel,” she said quietly. “He feels it’ll be too much for me.”

Roiza shook her head, too, unconvinced. She knew that even if Ezriel wasn’t thrilled with the idea, Perela would find a way around it. It must be that Kaily was objecting.

But Perela wanted the job, and Roiza wanted her to be happy. She looked her daughter in the eye.

“Listen. Perela, do it for me. Take the job, and I’ll talk to Kaily about it.”

There’s a famous story about a new CEO eager to impress. Determined to appear indispensable, he spends his first day in business pretending to juggle endless important calls. He transfers lines, taps buttons, and motions for visitors to wait, all while chatting away on imaginary business. After twenty minutes of this elaborate act, he invites the first visitor in, only to discover that he is the technician from the telephone company, there to connect the office phone lines… On some level, we’ve all tried to influence how others perceive us. And in today’s world, there’s a whole profession dedicated to this craft. Meet PR. Public relations (PR) is all about shaping a positive image for an organization or individual by managing communication with target audiences and the media.

Humble History

The classic joke about Jewish mothers proudly declaring, “My son, the doctor,” or, “My son, the lawyer,” doesn’t extend to, “My son, a public relations specialist” for a simple reason: Public relations as a formal profession is relatively new. While law and medicine boast deep historical roots, PR, though practiced informally for centuries, has only recently emerged as an official career path.

Public relations may seem modern, but its essence — strategic communication to shape public perception — has existed for ages. In ancient Iraq, a clay tablet promoting improved agricultural techniques is considered one of the earliest examples of PR. Likewise, rulers in Egypt, Persia and Babylon used monumental architecture, like pyramids and statues, to reinforce their authority and legacy.

main elements of public relations are practically as old as society: informing people, persuading people and integrating people with people.”

PR Perception

Promotions are a very strong aspect of PR. However, PR is more about trust, relationships and perception.

In 2019, EasyJet had a chance to strengthen its bond with travelers but missed the mark in a big way. A passenger posted a picture of an elderly woman sitting on a backless seat during a flight from England to Switzerland, tagging EasyJet in the message to draw their attention. Instead of issuing an apology or addressing the situation, EasyJet asked the passenger to remove the message and requested to discuss the

PUBLIC PERCEPTION — HAS EXISTED FOR AGES

During the Age of Discovery, explorers embellished tales of the New World, describing swampy regions as “sweet, fruitful and wholesome,” to attract settlers. When colonists in Virginia complained about hardships and conflict with Indians, anonymous pamphlets were circulated to reassure settlers and deflect criticism.

Throughout history, political figures have harnessed speeches, events and publications to shape public opinion. The Boston Tea Party, for instance, was a deliberately orchestrated act designed to sway sentiment — and its success changed the course of history forever.

Edward Bernays, a pioneer of modern public relations, aptly summarized its enduring relevance: “The three

Negativity Notwithstanding

The phrase “all publicity is good publicity” suggests that any attention — whether positive or negative — can be advantageous. This idea is evident in recent presidential campaigns, where even gaffes and missteps went viral, dominating headlines and social media. Such incidents, despite their seemingly negative impact, keep candidates in the public eye and fuel ongoing conversation, ensuring their relevance.

Human psychology plays a significant role in this phenomenon. Opposition or controversy often provokes curiosity rather than deterring interest. When something becomes a target of criticism, people are naturally drawn to investigate further, asking, “What’s all the fuss about?” This curiosity not only sparks engagement, but also heightens awareness, keeping the individual or organization firmly in the spotlight.

Consider a blush-worthy moment involving the Red Cross, where an employee accidentally posted a message about enjoying beer from the organization’s official account instead of their personal one. The message remained up for over an hour before it was removed, seemingly a PR disaster in the making.

However, the Red Cross responded with humor and grace, turning the mishap into a brilliant opportunity. Their self-aware, entertaining responses not only defused the situation but also attracted positive attention. Even better, the beer company mentioned in the message joined the fun, encouraging fans to donate to the Red Cross, showcasing how a mistake can evolve into a PR win.

On the flip side, even high-profile flops can have unexpected benefits. In 2019, Tesla’s unveiling of its “bulletproof” truck became the talk of the town — but not for the reasons they anticipated. During the live demo, Elon Musk and his team attempted to prove the truck’s durability by throwing a metal ball at its windows. To their dismay, the glass shattered — twice. While this might seem like a PR nightmare, Tesla’s existing reputation and PR backbone turned the flop into a viral moment of humor and laughs. Way to go, Tesla!

matter privately. This tone-deaf response only fueled the online backlash, demonstrating how poor PR can escalate criticism instead of quelling it.

This principle applies across industries. Today, it’s common for customers to review their experiences online, and businesses understand how crucial these reviews are. A single negative review can tarnish a brand’s image, while glowing feedback can boost sales.

Effective PR often involves generating organic media coverage. Instead of buying ad space to promote a client, a skilled PR professional gets the media to feature their story. A glowing article about an organization’s achievements carries way more weight and credibility than an advertisement written by the company itself.

When a new product or restaurant becomes a smashing success, the media is eager to tell their story. Could there be better advertising than this kind of organic media spotlight? (Answer: No!)

PR professionals play a crucial role in building trust and goodwill. From crafting campaigns to managing crises, arranging interviews and fostering internal communication, they work strategically to shape public perception. Successful PR is about understanding what different groups value and addressing their needs in a way that resonates.

Measuring the Impact of PR

Tracking the effectiveness of PR efforts is as crucial as executing them. Public relations serves to amplify your message, build engagement and expand influence. But without clear metrics, it’s impossible to know if your strategies are hitting the mark. Success lies in ensuring that as many people as possible are talking about your brand and understanding what you offer.

For organizations investing in PR, measuring results can sometimes be straightforward. For instance, new donor interest following a powerful ad campaign or an uptick in website visits after a magazine feature often signals PR success. Other times, it requires direct feedback; asking clients or donors how they heard about you — whether through a campaign, an article or a speech — can provide valuable insight into what works.

At the end of the day, influencing how others perceive a business or organization is essential to its health and success. And before we know it, “My son, the PR strategist,” will be introduced with pride.

When PR Segues to Marketing

One step after crafting positive public relations is creating media campaigns to further the impact. The effects of many iconic campaigns are still rippling today.

Lego’s Rebuild the World was the first global PR campaign in decades. This initiative inspired creativity in both children and adults, seamlessly aligning with the brand’s playful identity. The campaign encouraged customers to submit pictures of their Lego creations, which were then featured on an interactive 3D globe on the company’s website. Viewers could spin the globe to explore imaginative works from around the world. By balancing inspiration with playfulness, Lego reinforced its identity and brought its community closer together.

In our own community, the V’zakeini campaign is an extraordinary initiative that has gained remarkable traction since its inception about four years ago. V’zakeini’s campaign kicked off with a stunning new song that played on repeat in cars and homes, with listeners calling it “addictive.” It’s the kind of song that cannot be overplayed. What made this song especially touching was its inclusivity. It brought together singers from a variety of backgrounds, including Lubavitch, Litvish and Chassidish. Once listeners were hooked to the song, the initiative was introduced and embraced.

Now, every Friday, 50,000 women around the globe come together in an inspiring act of collective generosity, each donating $1 to support a childless couple in their quest to build a family. This simple yet profound effort has become a beacon of hope, transforming lives and uniting women worldwide. With tremendous siyata d’Shmaya and incredible PR, V’zakeini exemplifies the power of small, consistent acts of generosity to create an enormous impact.

Another organization making a significant impact is RCCS. Renowned for their innovative approach to fundraising,

INFLUENCING HOW OTHERS PERCEIVE A BUSINESS OR ORGANIZATION IS ESSENTIAL TO ITS HEALTH AND SUCCESS

RCCS launches a uniquely themed campaign each year, capturing the attention and imagination of donors and fundraisers alike. These creative themes are highly anticipated and play a crucial role in driving their fundraising success. The participation in these campaigns highlight RCCS’s remarkable ability to inspire its donor base year after year.

To better understand the magic behind these campaigns, I spoke with Esty Kohn, RCCS’s incredible campaign coordinator, who brings these concepts to life.

“GCNY is really the genius behind our ideas,” Esty shared. “They pitch an idea or two, and I go with the one I feel will resonate best with our hostesses and donors. But it’s more than just creativity; it’s about ensuring that the message aligns with RCCS’s mission.”

When asked about this year’s campaign, Esty shared her initial hesitation. “I loved this year’s theme right away. But I was a little nervous about how our cancer patients might perceive it. Turn cancer into a joke? It’s really not a joke. The theme walks a fine line, and I wanted to make sure it wouldn’t come across as insensitive. So I ran it by some cancer patients, and they actually thought we hit home. It gave me the confidence to move forward.

“The response from our donors makes it all worth it,” Esty adds. “Seeing people rally together for such an important cause is incredibly inspiring.”

Creating campaigns that deeply resonate with audiences and align seamlessly with brand values is what PR professionals do to drive lasting impact. PR has been around for centuries… and it’s here to stay.

Tell us about an unexpected and hugely successful marketing moment. Who was the client, and what was the initial idea?

A recent, hugely successful marketing project was the product naming and packaging design for the super-popular Sorbii pop produced by Abe’s Ice Cream.

The client came to us with the idea of combining two of their bestselling products — Parvelicious and Sorbetto — into one popsicle. While they developed the product, our creative team got to work, and we quickly determined that this was a treat geared for a more mature palate.

We set out to find a name and design packaging that would attract our target audience and eventually chose the name Sorbii to communicate a light, fruity, refreshing, sophisticated and premium feel. Every detail of the package design was carefully and strategically chosen to communicate the right message and attract our target audience. The serif font was chosen to communicate elegance and sophistication, and the flying fruit design elements and the careful attention to the texture shown in the renderings was to communicate the natural, fruity and fresh vibe. Baruch Hashem, it all came together in a beautiful, striking package design that really stood out.

When did you realize that this went beyond your expectations?

The Sorbii was delivered to the stores on Wednesday, and on Friday, the client called to tell us that they were completely sold out. There had been no heavy advertising, just a simple intro ad, and the product was flying off the shelves. It has continued to sell well since, even now in the winter.

Why do you think this debut turned out to be so successful?

It starts with the product. We were confident that the product was a good one and that our client will deliver on his promise of a refreshing, elegant and delicious pop. The product also had additional features of being parve and sugarfree, which greatly increased its appeal. Our strategy to focus on a mature target audience was, baruch Hashem, on-point, and the name and package design resonated with this group, contributing to the huge success of this project.

Tell us about an unexpected and hugely successful marketing moment. Who was the client, and what was the initial idea?

Before launching his new taxi company, the owner of Go Cab reached out to us. He wanted us to do the marketing for his new service as well as come up with a name for it.

At the time, there was major awareness about taxi safety in Monsey, and our client wanted to create a Yiddish-owned company that would have non-jewish drivers and cameras installed in each car. However, just before launching our campaign, another new taxi company advertised as well. This was a pretty significant hurdle we had to overcome.

When did you realize this went beyond your expectations?

When they asked us to stop the campaign for two weeks since they couldn’t keep up with the demand. They had to take the time to get more drivers on the road.

Why do you think the campaign turned out to be so successful?

We addressed all taxi-related issues, and the communication was clear and transparent. People knew: These are the issues, and this is what we are doing about them. The ads were not especially clever or creative; rather, they were all about communication. Of course, the ads were nicely designed and all that, but communication was key. People understood the message and people began using Go Cab.

ARTISTIC GROUP

Tell us about an unexpected and hugely successful marketing moment. Who was the client, and what was the initial idea?

I remember sitting at the Money Matters Event, hosted by our client The Fiscal Group, and thinking, “Wow, this actually happened.” It started out as an idea we suggested, and after much guidance and planning, the 50th anniversary was live, and full of attendees.

Our long-term goal had been to increase the customer base at their original location and drive traffic to the new location they recently opened in Monsey. The short-term execution idea was to host an anniversary event. Their 50th company anniversary was coming up, and we decided to tap into that occasion to arrange a large networking and informational event that would bring together many business owners who want to hear more about finances in general, and taxes in particular. This both helped their client base expand and also increased awareness and authority around their brand and what they stand for.

When did you realize that this went beyond your expectations?

When I stepped into the Crowne Plaza lobby on a rainy and dreary night and saw a packed venue. We had a job: to get people through that door. Walking in there and seeing more than a thousand people engaging with our client was big. People came to hear, to listen, to gather new ideas. There was no call to action; there was only generosity. That built the client’s likeability, and as a subconscious act of reciprocity, people signed up to do their taxes with The Fiscal Group.

Why do you think the event turned out to be so successful?

Siyata d’Shmaya at every step of the way.

Was there any related promotional item that was distributed at the time?

We had some branded company swag: a calendar, pens and notepads.

DART

Tell us about an unexpected and hugely successful marketing moment. Who was the client, and what was the initial idea?

The client was O’fishally, and the concept was to showcase a product — fish — in a humorous, playful way, while keeping the messaging clear and onpoint.

When did you realize that this went beyond your expectations?

We launched a campaign to promote a new service with a specific goal in mind, but the results far exceeded our expectations, achieving over 300% of our target! We saw the impact just hours after the weekly papers were released — by Wednesday afternoon.

Why do you think the campaign turned out to be so successful?

The client had a clear vision and defined goals, which helped drive the campaign’s effectiveness and resonated with the audience.

Tell us about an unexpected and hugely successful marketing moment. Who was the client, and what was the initial idea?

During Covid, a physical therapist reached out to us saying that he wanted to start doing physical therapy with patients who were affected by Covid and needed to recover in their own homes. We created an ad campaign, which we ran in many local circulars, as well as in national magazines.

The company, Link Home Therapy, has since expanded their focus and footprint and now offers additional wellness services to assist older patients in all areas, so they can have the best quality of life possible as they age.

When did you realize that this campaign went beyond your expectations?

When the client requested a brochure with information about their therapy gyms opening in assisted living facilities across the country. That’s when we re alized that the campaign had majorly succeeded.

Why do you think it turned out to be so successful?

The ads were the initial push, but we can credit a lot of the success to the way they treat their patients, as well as how they built their busi ness model inter nally. They really just want to help people.

We had the opportunity to market a groundbreaking product — a superlightweight shtreimel named the Yeshiya Shtreimel and produced by Kraus Shtreimel. This product was designed for individuals who prefer a lighter option, whether due to comfort or intolerance to weight, without compromising on durability or elegance. After years of research and development using innovative techniques and specialized materials, our client was ready to launch this revolutionary product.

Given that this was a completely new product category, our strategy was to take a subtle yet consistent approach. We planned a low-key campaign to steadily attract potential customers while building intrigue and awareness.

When did you realize that this went beyond your expectations?

The campaign began with a teaser ad in several Yom Tov magazines, followed by the official product launch after Yom Tov. Unexpectedly, a competitor attempted to imitate the idea and market their version of a lightweight shtreimel. This created a buzz in the industry, sparking conversation that significantly increased interest in the Yeshiya Shtreimel.

Why do you think the campaign turned out to be so successful?

This aforementioned buzz generated free publicity for both the product and the Kraus Shtreimel brand. What began as a focused campaign quickly turned into a marketing sensation, with interest and demand growing far beyond our expectations.

FRIEDCO

Tell us about an unexpected and hugely successful marketing moment. Who was the client, and what was the initial idea?

There are too many stories to count, but one stands out as it was a case in which we set out to do a modest job, and stumbled into changing the frum world in a long-lasting and remarkable way.

About seven years ago, we were approached by Keren Ezer, an organization that assists families in the community with financial matters, to raise awareness about the then-hyped “dirah crisis” in Brooklyn.

As part of our responsibilities, we were tasked with highlighting how dire things had become, how they were only going to get worse, and how families should begin considering moving to more affordable neighborhoods.

At the time, moving out of the area wasn’t as commonplace as it is today; it was considered an option that was mostly for people “on the fringe” — those who came from out of the area or didn’t belong to central communities.

When did you realize that this went beyond your expectations?

As soon as the campaign was launched, the organization that hired us saw a deluge of requests for more information on where to move and how. It quickly became apparent that they had struck a raw nerve, and that the problem wasn’t really awareness — it was logistics.

We reconvened with the organization to plan the next step and decided to shift gears and meet the moment with a first-of-its kind “dirahs expo” to promote some of the exciting solutions already available, or those soon to appear on the horizon. But even then, we didn’t envision the type of success we would be greeted with.

Why do you think this project turned out to be so successful?

Developers and pioneers from different communities began registering for the expo, promoting multiple fledgling neighborhoods as well as new developments in more established ones.

As the big day drew closer, the excitement throughout the community kept growing, and it was clear that a paradigm shift was occurring in real time.

The event was a smashing success, blowing past even the most optimistic projections. But even more transformative was the impact that did not take long to follow.

The event helped areas like Union City and Linden establish themselves as bonafide frum communities that now count proudly among the places that heimishe Yidden call home. It also helped mainstream the exodus to areas surrounding Monsey, as well as those near Lakewood, as places where chassidish families are comfortable raising their children, among like-minded neighbors.

There was an additional effect of this expo that completely flipped the kosher commercial world on its head. It may be hard to recall, but expos for every industry and field was a novelty at the time. There was one food show annually, and that was it. The success of this event soon led to many others emulating the expo model, with Jewish community expos becoming a common occurrence today.

Tell us about an unexpected and hugely successful marketing moment. Who was the client, and what was the initial idea?

It’s actually happening as we speak. Keter, who is a respectable and erliche brand, wanted to showcase a beautiful new collection of velvet tefillin beitelen. In order to get bochurim excited about it, we decided to put photos on our ads, with each one featuring a custom beitel that says something like, Yossi from X yeshiva has this beitel, or, Moshe from Y yeshiva has this beitel

We used real names and real yeshivos, and the oilem really connected to it in an unbelievable way. We wanted to get the bochurim excited, but we couldn’t have anticipated just how excited they would all be.

{$1,000 Value!}

When did you realize that this went beyond your expectations?

As soon as we published the ad, every yeshiva bochur stopped me in the street, and I got many phone calls from yeshivos to find out what was happening. The boys were very busy about it, analyzing specific yeshivos and types.

Why do you think the campaign turned out to be so successful?

We felt like tefillin is a special mitzvah, and for hiddur mitzvah, we wanted to create something very special. We figured that we’d connect bochurim of this age to the product by using real names and yeshiva names.

Tell us about an unexpected and hugely successful marketing moment. Who was the client, and what was the initial idea?

Our client was Aspect Glasswork, a glass and mirror installation company we were rebranding. As part of its transition from its previous identity — they’d been known as Royal Glass — we created a large ad to announce the change. We also did a car wrap to create further buzz.

The idea was simple; we just wanted to inform existing customers that the company had rebranded, and introduce its new name, logo and updated visuals. However, the response was unexpected: The campaign not only created interest but also brought in multiple new customers.

When did you realize that this went beyond your expectations?

The moment the client started getting inquiries because of the branding announcement. People who hadn’t worked with them before reached out, expressing interest in their services. It quickly became clear that the announcement was way more than that; it was working as an effective marketing tool.

Why

do you think it turned out to be so successful?

The ad was visually appealing, and carried a clear and confident message. It communicated professionalism and trustworthiness while showcasing the client’s work.

Tell us about an unexpected and hugely successful marketing moment. Who was the client, and what was the initial idea?

When working on an ad for Pledger Charitable, we decided to incorporate a gold coin as a design element. The initial idea was to include the gold coin as a subtle representation of value and charity, tying it to the organization’s core message.

What started as a basic visual choice unexpectedly became a sensation. Today, whenever people see a gold coin on a blue background, they immediately associate it with Pledger Charitable. The coin has essentially become a second logo for the brand and appears on all ads, signs and promotional materials.

When did you realize that this went beyond your expectations?

After we placed a billboard on the highway to Upstate New York. Due to the billboard’s placement at a curve in the road, the gold coins were more prominently visible than the logo itself. People identified the billboard — and the brand — solely by the sight of the gold coins, which was an entirely unexpected outcome.

Why do you think this element turned out to be so successful?

FEB. 2 - 5

Tell us about an unexpected and hugely successful marketing moment. Who was the client, and what was the initial idea?

The client was Chocolate Wise, and the goal was promoting their new kids’ collection.

We wanted to create a unique and engaging teaser campaign. First we designed an ad featuring images of their new line, intentionally excluding the company’s name. The theme of the campaign was “Guess and Win,” and people were invited to guess which company the ad represented for a chance to win a $500 gift card.

We provided a hint, mentioning that the company had introduced multiple chocolate collections that year. The winner would be announced in the following week’s publication, which encouraged people to check back. This strategy not only built anticipation, but also drew significant attention to the company and their new product.

Initially, we estimated that we might receive a hundred or two hundred correct guesses. After all, there are so many chocolate brands advertising all the time. We thought the raffle would help make the campaign fun and memorable, but we didn’t quite anticipate how engaged people would become.

When did you realize this went beyond your expectations?

The entry period lasted from Wednesday, when the publication came out, to the following Monday. By Friday, we had already received over two thousand responses. By Tuesday morning, when we held the raffle, the to tal had surpassed four thousand entries! Even more impressive, over 90 percent of participants had guessed the correct company.

Why do you think this campaign turned out to be so successful?

We believe the success of the campaign stemmed from the strong presence the client had already established through their previous ads. People recognized the brand we created for them, and connected the dots quickly.

MANGO

Tell us about an unexpected and hugely successful marketing moment. Who was the client, and what was the initial idea?

We were tasked with creating an ad for Sprinkles Ice Cream to introduce their new push-up-style ices. The idea was to position this frozen treat as a playful, easy, mess-free dessert — something both kids and adults would love. We anticipated a fun, straightforward campaign that would spark interest

PINEX

Tell us about an unexpected and hugely successful marketing moment. Who was the client, and what was the initial idea?

The client was ParCare, a medical center in Boro Park. The point of the campaign was to promote their wide variety of specialists on staff. Such a campaign often turns out to be a series of ads, with each one featuring a different specialist, from a neurologist to a cardiologist and so on. However, we know that when someone needs a specialist, they simply head to one in Manhattan; they don’t remember an ad they saw six months earlier.

That’s why our initial idea focused on informing people that they could skip the trip to Manhattan. People would never remember a long string of specialists, but they would remember that Boro Park has all the specialists Manhattan has!

The campaign launched with posters featuring iconic Manhattan sites. We hung these all over to get people curious, and then we introduced the line “Skip the City, Skip Manhattan.”

On the first day of Chanukah, we set up a carnival and called it Manhattan Day. We brought down ten yellow cabs, billboards, had music playing in front of the building, and put down cones with smoke coming out of them. Suddenly, the street looked like a Manhattan street.

When did you realize this went beyond your expectations?

When people started driving around the yellow cabs, people who were passing kept saying, “It’s like Manhattan, it’s like Manhattan.” That was the moment we felt that the campaign clicked, and people realized for the first time that ParCare is a facility that has everything a person could need.

Why do you think the campaign turned out to be so successful?

We brought real life into the picture. Instead of simply printing ads, we created a Manhattan scene. People didn’t only see Manhattan; they felt it.

Was there any related promotional item that was distributed at the time?

We gave out a custom matching card game. But instead of the game featuring matching sets, one card said “Dermatology,” for instance, and its set explained what type of doctor that is. We got tons of feedback about this game. People, including adults, learned the meaning of many specialties, which upped the challenge and the fun.

PIVOT

Tell us about an unexpected and hugely successful marketing moment. Who was the client, and what was the initial idea?

I’ll tell you about a special client who saves lives every day — Makdim. What began as a single ad reminding adults to schedule a colonoscopy evolved into a movement that continues to change the way the frum community approaches preventative health. Makdim, whose name was inspired by the idea of being proactive — “Makdim refuah l’makah” — has become a lifeline for thousands.

It started off with a caring individual who called us with an idea: He wanted to let people know that getting a colonoscopy can prevent serious disease, r”l. After personally being impacted by an early diagnosis, he wanted to spread the word, so he collected a few dollars to get an ad written, de-

signed and placed by us. As we created the ad, we decided to put a name to the message: Makdim.

When did you realize that this went beyond your expectations?

The feedback from that single ad was overwhelming. In just one month, hundreds were inspired to get colonoscopies, and a large number discovered life-threatening conditions that would have gone undetected, r”l. Calls were pouring in from people who told us, “Your ad saved my life.”

That’s when we realized this was more than an awareness campaign; this was a movement. Makdim was creating a shift in the frum world toward prioritizing health, and we knew we shouldn’t stop there.

With a steadfast team and round-the-clock work, Makdim went from an ad campaign to a nonprofit organization in weeks. First, we expanded the focus: adding physicals, women’s exams, and other preventative care services. Then we built a website to accommodate appointment requests and set up a telehealth line to provide one-on-

one help so we could handle the intake volume. After that, we decided to leverage the community’s enthusiasm and host an awareness event, which garnered hundreds of people in person and thousands more online.

Suddenly, community leaders, doctors and even those who had never given much thought to their health were reaching out, eager to join. By the time Makdim was a few months old, thousands of appointments had been made, hundreds of early-stage diseases were being detected, and countless lives were being saved.

Today Makdim is a full-fledged nonprofit organization with global impact, helping communities prioritize health through education, awareness events, reminders and logistical support. It’s a movement that started in Boro Park, but has already been replicated in the UK and Australia.

Why do you think this campaign turned out to be so successful?

It’s all siyata d’Shmaya, of course. Beyond that, the idea was built upon a real need and a practical solution. The messaging came from people who understood the issue and why it was being ignored. Our message was clear: “A trip to the doctor can be lifesaving.” Our direct language, combined with handson support — from scheduling to reminders and transportation — broke down barriers that prevent people from seeking care.

But Makdim went beyond logistics. For example, during the summer, they arranged night hours for doctors and gave complimentary suppers to those who came for testing. The extent they go is unbelievable, and so are the results. Until this day, we get messages from people who tell us they were on the verge of a stroke, nearing a heart attack, or found early-stage cancer, and b’chasdei Hashem, they are now getting the care they need to live in health.

But our impact isn’t just local. Jewish communities throughout the USA and around the world are reaching out to replicate the model, and we’re so grateful we played a role in this life-saving movement.

SAMKUP

Tell us about an unexpected and hugely successful marketing moment. Who was the client, and what was the initial idea?

Definitely US mobile. What started out as a small, four-week trial in Monsey simply blew up.

What’s interesting is that unlike most of our campaigns, which are known for their out-of-the-box style, we took a simple approach with this one, highlighting the product with simple messaging — $8 a month.

When did you realize that this went beyond your expectations?

The company got almost a thousand calls in the first week. They couldn’t keep up with the volume; we had to halt the campaign for a few weeks while the company hired and trained new agents. The success of the campaign promoted the company to run a full, long-term campaign in all heimishe communities.

Why do you think this campaign turned out to be so successful?

Because it answered a need. People were paying $25 a month for just talk-and-text phone service, and they learned that they can get the same product for a third of that. When you have a good product, you just have to let the product speak for itself, without crafting an overly creative marketing approach.

SKY MEDIA

Tell us about an unexpected and hugely successful marketing moment. Who was the client, and what was the initial idea?

NOW IN MONSEY & NEW SQUARE

The client was Five30 Fitness Center in Boro Park. Leading up to their grand opening, we ran a campaign called “messages from you.” The idea was to influence people to act on what their inner voice is telling them — to show up for themselves and to work out. The text on the ads were reversed, and when held up to a mirror, the message became legible. We hired Devorah Schwartz for the grand opening, and we also involved her in the campaign.

When did you realize that this went beyond your expectations?

When we showed up at the event we’d coordinated and had to elbow our way through the crowd.

While strategizing whom we want to attract, we knew we were on the right track in terms of messaging and entertainment, but we didn’t anticipate the entire 18th Avenue in Boro Park looking like a parade of women and girls. We found out along with everyone else.

Why do you think this grand opening turned out to be so successful?

I think that there was a void in the market that was waiting to be filled. The campaign spoke to the essence of every woman and girl who wanted an opportunity to exercise in a fun and safe environment. When we rolled out the advertising campaign, everyone’s eyes were on it. Devorah Schwartz was a very onbrand choice for the clientele we were targeting, and she brought them all out that night.

Was there any related promotional item that was distributed at the time?

Yes. There were a lot of free promos handed out, and even though you would think the marketing agency wouldn’t play a huge role in that, it kept us quite busy during the weeks leading up to the event.

MONSEY & NEW SQUARE

TAGLINE

Tell us about an unexpected and hugely successful marketing moment. What was the campaign all about?

Recently, we were trusted with the task of helping Monsey re-elect Reb Aaron Bentzion Wieder. Every political campaign comes with its unique challenges, but in Monsey, where heated debates and passionate opinions are part of our culture, it’s a whole different ball game. From the start, we knew this campaign would be different. As we expected, the political climate was intense, and for many, the elections felt deeply personal. Emotions ran high, but we knew our direction: only positivity, no negativity. As Torah-observing Yidden, our approach was clear. We had a strong candidate with an incredible track record of service to our town and city. This was our focus, and we didn’t waver.

When did you realize that this went beyond your expectations?

The response was extraordinary. The passion and fire in the air were palpable. Instead of letting that energy divide us, we channeled it into a unifying force — a reminder that

we all share the same goals for Monsey’s future. By focusing on Reb Aaron’s achievements and the unity of our community, we turned the campaign into a celebration of what we all stand for. It wasn’t just about politics; it was about ensuring Monsey’s continued success.

Why do you think the campaign turned out to be so successful?

Every message, poster and statement exuded optimism and gratitude. Our strategy centered on reminding the people of Monsey, and ourselves, of the tremendous contributions Reb Aaron Bentzion Wieder had made to our community. We set aside the personal grievances and political noise to focus on the bigger picture: Reb Aaron is not just a politician; he’s a vital part of Monsey. His work has impacted each of us personally, and his presence in Albany has been an undeniable asset to our community.

When Karen Wisinska went shopping one day at a Primark in Northern Ireland, she came home with more than she bargained for. Primark is a UK-based fashion brand, selling clothing, shoes and beauty products for low prices. When she opened her purchase, she saw something puzzling. In the folds of the fabric was a yellowed piece of paper with “SOS! SOS! SOS!” scrawled on top. The rest of the paper was filled with handwritten Chinese characters, which she could not read. When the note was translated, Amnesty International broke the news to her: The note was a cry for help, purportedly from a prison labor camp in China.

“We work fifteen hours every day and eat food that wouldn’t even be fed to ... dogs. We’re [forced to] work like oxen,” the handwritten note said in Chinese.

The message appealed to the international community to “condemn these human rights abuses by the Chinese government.”

This was not the first time that calls for help were found in items manufactured in China. One woman in Oregon found a call for help in a box of holiday decorations purchased at Sears. The note read, “If you occasionally buy this product, please kindly resend this letter to the World Human Rights Organization.” It went on to detail the harsh conditions of China’s notorious “re-education camps,” where prisoners were forced to manufacture goods for export, against international law.

These stories happened a number of years ago. The companies that sold the items all rejected the claims that they benefitted from forced labor, and said that they incorporated stringent measures to ensure that their products were ethically sourced.

So have things improved or have they gotten worse?

THE EXPLOSION OF SUPER-CHEAP GOODS

Shein, a manufacturer that specializes in inexpensive fashion, was first founded in 2008. By 2022 it had grown to become the world’s largest clothing retailer. According to a report compiled by Money.co.uk, Shein has taken over giants like Nike and Adidas as the most-Googled clothing brand, and Zara and Macy’s in online sales.

Temu, another ultra-cheap retail website, exploded on the scene in 2022. In just a short time, it has grown into a shopping behemoth. It has targeted the U.S. market with aggressive advertising, famously spending $7 million on one single ad, with their current spending exceeding $5.17 billion since bulldozing onto the U.S. market.

The aggressive marketing tactics of these retail leviathans seem to have paid off. American shoppers have happily filled their carts with clothing, electronics, beauty products and all kinds of schmattes, with the rock bottom

prices eliminating the need to carefully consider your purchases. After all, if a sweater costs just $7, what’s the worst thing that can happen? It’s too cheap to return, so it just goes into the garbage, and you’re only $7 poorer.

The price we ultimately pay, however, might be considerably more significant.

Every item that we purchase, whether from around the corner at a mom-and-pop shop or from halfway across the globe, has an entire index of costs behind the sticker price. That price includes logistics, labor, tariffs and taxes, and marketing. The price we pay often includes another price most would be reluctant to pay if they were actually aware of it: extreme harm to the environment, use of toxic materials, invasion of privacy and human exploitation by aggressive, unethical marketers eager for your American dollars.

ENVIRONMENTAL COSTS

You don’t have to be a crazed, blue-haired eco-warrior to care about the environment. After all, we’re lucky enough to live in a country that regulates the way factories can dis-

pose of their waste, and our waters and air are now cleaner than ever. We can all snicker at the latest ban on plastic bags and straws, assuring ourselves that people are deluding themselves by thinking that this will accomplish anything in the long run. But a polluted environment affects everyone, whether it’s a hemp-wearing hippie or a Wall Street trader. Microplastics, the latest scourge of the environment, have made their way into everything, including the fish we eat and the water we drink, and may be making us sicker.

What are most cheap goods made from? You guessed it: polyester and other synthetic fabrics, which are, essentially, another form of plastic. Additionally, manufacturing processes overseas, which do not have any of the environmental restrictions that the Western world imposes, dump tons of toxic waste into the water and air.

TOXIC DANGER

Women’s accessories sold by Shein and Temu were found by South Korean researchers to have toxic materials sometimes hundreds of times above acceptable levels. Children’s shoes were found to contain high levels of phthalates, a known carcinogen (cancer-causing chemical) that can disrupt the body’s natural hormonal balance. Phthalates are used to make plastic more flexible, and one pair of shoes sold by Shein was found to have 229 levels above the legal limit of phthalates. Other known carcinogens such as formaldehyde and lead were also found to be at unacceptably high levels.

STRANGER DANGER

Ever wonder why, after making a few purchases from Ali Express, you keep getting images of little boys in curly peyos popping up on your screen? Even more disconcerting is the fact that they’re wearing cute

matching Shabbos’dig pajamas. That’s because all of these firms use an incredibly effective form of data mining to figure out what kind of clothing you like, what demographic you belong to, and what kind of purchase you are likely to make next.

If you clicked on a cute Shabbos outfit, well, then you are very likely an Orthodox Jew, and now you’ll get dozens of suggestions from tichels to challah covers to custom upsherin peckelach. Every time you visit one of these sites, the company is collecting information about you, from where you live, to whether you have children, to your personal taste.

The Temu app is now the most downloaded app on the App Store, which just tells you how pervasive they have become, living silently on peoples’ phones while beckoning them to make just one more quick purchase.

THE HIGH HUMAN COST

The highest cost yet may be the human cost. China’s factories are shrouded in mystery, and few know exactly what goes on there. Some light has recently been shed on the plight of the Uyghurs, a Muslim minority living in Northwestern China. The Chinese government has been aggressively targeting the Uyghurs, and penalizing them for

holding on to their religion. Women who persist in wearing headscarves, or men who have beards that are “too long” for Chinese sensibilities, are sometimes sent to “re-education” camps, where many of them are then forced to manufacture the very goods that have come so cheaply to your door. Forcing prisoners to manufacture goods for resale is a violation of international law.

Roizy, a heimish wife and mother, experienced firsthand what life is like in Chinese factories.

“My husband has an Amazon business, and sometimes we need to actually travel down to China to oversee the

manufacture of the goods,” she explains. She got way more than she bargained for when one of their agents “invited” them to see what a workers’ dormitory looked like. Roizy was horrified at this invasion of privacy, but the agent persisted and led them into the workers’ private quarters.

“Consideration and respect for human beings is something that we are used to in the Western world, but in China, only one thing matters: money, and producing goods as quickly as possible so that they can make more money.”

Workers are recruited from rural villages and are housed in dormitories, where they live away from their families for months at a time.

“They travel to their home villages about once a year, and that’s the only time they see their families,” Roizy says.

Even the relatively affluent live lives dominated by work, and also work long hours and are separated from their families for great lengths of time.

“One thing that we never saw, throughout our visit to China, was a factory that was air-conditioned. The machines were well cared for, but the workers’ comfort was never considered,” Roizy adds.

A recent project placed undercover journalists with hidden cameras in factories that manufactured clothing for

Shein. What they uncovered was shocking. While officially Chinese policy is to have a workday no longer than eight hours, some of these workers were reportedly putting in seventeen-hour days, seven days a week. The only days off were one or two days per month. The first month’s pay was withheld, and penalties were invoked for every item that was subpar, with the predetermined amount deducted from their paltry salaries. In one factory, the workers made a daily base salary of $20, which would then be docked by $14 if any garments had mistakes.

A RECENT PROJECT PLACED UNDERCOVER JOURNALISTS WITH HIDDEN CAMERAS IN FACTORIES THAT MANUFACTURED CLOTHING FOR SHEIN.

WHAT THEY UNCOVERED WAS SHOCKING

This documentary ruffled many feathers, even from people who prefer not to think about where their clothes come from. After an initial expected period of denial and obfuscation, Shein finally admitted to “some” violations of their official policies, and declared, “We know we have a responsibility to safeguard the welfare of workers in our supply chain. In light of the recent report in the news, we launched an investigation into the claim that two of our suppliers had unacceptable working conditions at their facilities.”

However, even though many unsavory facts about these factories’ conditions have come to light, their popularity has continued to soar.

THE FUTURE OF CHEAP GOODS

Congress has recently started to discuss methods of implementing stronger tariffs on goods imported from China. In a system that many frum Amazon retailers have decried, American sellers of goods that have been manufactured in China and imported by American companies often have excessive tariffs and fees imposed on them. On the other hand, Chinese companies can have their goods imported directly from China with much lower fees, as well as without the

added expense of maintaining warehouses in the U.S.

But what can we, the consumers, do? How can we resist the lure of that really cheap coat that looks just like a Moncler but costs under $100? Perhaps the answer is to look deep within ourselves, and to question if modern American consumer habits are consistent with our Torah values. The fashion industry, for many years, ran under the assumption that fashion has four seasons. With the meteoric rise of the disposable fashion juggernaut, fashion is now said to have 52 seasons. Buy it, wear it a few times, then dump it (don’t even bother washing it!) because now something else is trending.

Why are we jumping through all these hoops that have artificially been constructed for us and do not represent a value system we are aligned with? Perhaps we may have been too quick to embrace the fast fashion bandwagon. Perhaps we should be going back to the way we used to shop, investing in a few high quality pieces that could then be worn for a few years.

But we may be complicit in our own downfall by buying and disposing of clothing after a single season, and then complaining about having to go shopping… again.

CHAPTER 6 OF 6

Tzviki teaches Moshe stretches to relieve his injured back and shows him how to work out in ways that won’t hurt him.

Moshe arrived ten minutes late to our final session, and started talking as soon as he saw me.

“This was a fun experiment,” he said, “but I don’t see this working-out thing working out for me.”

I wasn’t surprised, but a wave of disappointment washed over me.

It had only been five weeks since I bumped into Moshe, the exercise skeptic. We had such a strong start. After just two sessions, Moshe was even willing to try exercising on his own. But then, the setback: He hurt his back, and I could sense that this was the beginning of his hesitation.

Even though we were able to relieve his pain by helping him move more deliberately, his motivation wavered. He almost skipped the fourth session, claiming he didn’t have time. And now, Moshe was making it official; this was just a “fun experiment” to him, not something he could commit to long term.

“I hear that,” I said, keeping my tone neutral. “You’re a busy guy, and you got hurt trying to exercise. I get how those things can discourage you. But can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

“What went well for you over the last five weeks of exercising?” I asked.

“What went well?” Moshe echoed, sounding slightly thrown off as he stepped onto the box and nearly lost his balance.

“You tell me what went well,” he shot back, regaining his footing. “You’re the coach; aren’t you supposed to tell me how things are going?”

This was a delicate moment. If I handled this conversation right, I could get through to Moshe, the potential exerciser who was on the verge of giving up.

“I can see why you’d think that,” I responded calmly. “By the way, pick up the pace a little. We want to get your heart rate up.”

As Moshe began to step faster, I pushed gently. “Humor me. What did go well while you were exercising?”

Moshe thought for a minute, stepping off the box and moving on to the next exercise: lunges.

“Well, I felt more energized on the days I exercised,” he admitted, his voice less defensive now. “And even after, the next day, I felt… good. Besides the week when I threw out my back, my body felt looser, more ready to move.”

He lunged forward again. “I also noticed that things got easier. I mean, this warm-up was a struggle just five weeks ago, but now I can do it without thinking.”

As he bent down, crawling his hands forward into a plank, I could see the realization starting to set in.

“Hmmm,” I said, watching his form. “Now, what’s wrong with continuing?”

Moshe rolled his eyes. “First you want me to think about what’s working, and now you’re asking me what’s wrong?

“Well, it’s hard,” he continued, his breath growing shorter. “It takes up time, makes me sweat, gets me out of breath… and besides, I don’t have time for this.”

If I had a penny for every time someone pulled the “no time” card…, I thought, but I kept my tone steady.

“You’re right; exercise takes time,” I agreed. “But as you just said, you felt more energized and found that even simple tasks became easier. Let me ask you: Did having more energy and feeling less worn out improve your productivity?”

Moshe stepped back onto the box, thinking. “I did notice that things got done quicker, and I was able to get more done,” he admitted.

“Exactly. Use this step as your active recovery,” I instructed.

“Control your breathing.”

As Moshe slowed his breath, he looked calmer, more reflective.

“SO BY TAKING TIME TO EXERCISE, YOU FELT BETTER AND WERE ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH MORE. SOUNDS LIKE A SOLID RETURN ON YOUR INVESTMENT, DON’T YOU THINK?”

“Interesting,” I continued. “So by taking time to exercise, you felt better and were able to accomplish more. Sounds like a solid return on your investment, don’t you think?”

Moshe wiped the sweat from his forehead and nodded. “It does. But I know myself — I won’t keep it up on my own.”

“I know,” I agreed. “That’s why the Smith System exists. We become your partner — your chavrusa — and make sure this happens.”

Moshe shook his head, chuckling slightly as he returned to his lunges. “So now you’re asking me to give up my time and my money? Forget about it. I’m not going to pay to be tortured.”

“You call having more energy and being more productive ‘torture’?” I challenged, grinning. “You’re focusing on the journey, not the destination. When you go on a trip, do you enjoy the flight, the airport, all the running around?”

“No,” Moshe admitted.

“Exactly,” I continued. “But you do it because you want to get to your vacation spot. Exercise is the same. You don’t do it because you love it. You do it because it helps you show up as your best self.”

“No way,” Moshe said, shaking his head as he bent down into another plank. “Not going to happen.”

“What are you afraid of?” I asked as he held the plank, his body trembling. I couldn’t tell

if he was shaking from exertion or frustration.

“Afraid?” Moshe scoffed as he stood up. “I’m afraid of nothing.”

“You already see the value,” I pressed. “So what’s really holding you back?”

He paused, then looked at me, more serious now. “Honestly? I’m afraid of hurting myself again. And I don’t want to commit to something just to give it up later.”

“Look, I get it,” I said. “Life happens. Sometimes, the yetzer hara holds us back from starting something good. You see the value, Moshe; don’t worry about five years from now. Take each week as it comes, and we’ll be here, supporting you along the way.”

Moshe looked at me. I stared right back.

He blew out a breath. “Fine,” he said. “I guess this means… you win.”

I grinned and shook his hand. “No, Moshe,” I said. “This means you win.”

He gave me his signature smirk. “Of course,” he said. “See you next week.”

WEEK 5: PULL

The pull pattern is super helpful for everyday movements, like when you open a heavy door, grab groceries, or pull out a chair. Not only does it build strength in your arms and back, but it also helps improve your posture. When you do pulling movements, you strengthen the muscles in your upper back, which helps you stand and sit up straighter.

A great pulling exercise to try at home is the Bent-Over Row. You don’t need fancy equipment; you can use water bottles, cans or even a backpack filled with books as weights.

Here’s how to do it:

1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and slightly bend your knees.

2. Lean forward at your hips, keeping your back straight and chest up, so your body is almost parallel to the floor.

3. Hold your weights (or household items) with your arms hanging down toward the floor.

4. Pull the weights up toward your waist, squeezing your shoulder blades together, like you’re pulling something toward you.

5. Slowly lower the weights, and repeat ten to fifteen times. This will help build strength and improve posture.
