COLLEGE CONSIDERATIONS
(Re: The College Mirage, Issue 483)
Thanks for your wonderful magazine. We enjoy it very much every week. Although the feature on the pros and cons of college degrees was very on target, an important perspective was omitted. It is well known that the rabbanim of the previous generation were against us attending college. When people asked the Satmar Rebbe how they will have parnassah without a college degree, he replied, “You’ll open a business, and the college graduates will come work for you!” How true were his words. May Hashem bentsch us all with parnassah b’revach and harchavas hadaas. Name Withheld
TEACHERS WORK HARDER THAN YOU
(Re: Working in the Real World, Inbox, Issue 483)
I’m writing in response to the working mother who complained about the school schedule. While I do not have a solution to the issue she addressed, I want to comment on her remark that “maybe teachers work harder than she does.”
This mother obviously has never seen a teacher at work.
I am not a teacher, but I was a school secretary for ten years, and I can promise that letter-writer that unless she owns a business or is the CEO of a business, she does not work as hard as a teacher.
Do you stand in front of 25 faces at 9 o’clock in the morning after being up with a baby half a night, getting a few kids ready for school, packing up your own things, taking chicken out of the freezer for supper, and swallowing something quite distant from what can be called breakfast because you can’t just eat a sandwich at your computer? Do you have the responsibility for these girls’ emotional, spiritual, educational and social wellbeing? Do you have mothers calling you at home to discuss their daughter’s behavioral issues? Do you have to meet the expectations of a school dean, principal, curriculum advisor, 25 students and 50 parents?
Now add to all that the reality that teachers come home with a third of what most working women earn.
Our teachers are overworked and underpaid, and as hard as it may be for you to occupy your kids when they have a few days off, please don’t voice opinions that make it sound as if the teachers are getting an undeserved vacation.

A LOST OPPORTUNITY
(Re: Working in the Real World, Inbox, Issue 483)
I was very disturbed and disappointed to read a mother’s complaint about having her daughters off from school too often. They are your children, for you to raise and enjoy. Yes, when there’s school, of course they should attend. But when they do have days off, tell them how much you look forward to having them home and spending the day with them. Make them feel treasured. They’ll be home anyway; you may as well make them feel good about it. When your kids feel that you, the most important person in their life, actually enjoy spending time with them, it gives them an everlasting sense of security and confidence. On the other hand, how do you think kids feel when they hear their mother complaining that they’re home?
I understand that some women have no choice and have to work, and their responsibilities are real. But these responsibilities shouldn’t cause your kids to feel unwanted or unliked.
I wish mothers would realize what treasures their children are, and that every minute spent with them forms a sense of security and memories that will stay with them forever.

PASS THE TEST
(Re: Testing, Testing, 1-2-3, Issue 483)
Regarding teachers giving students modified tests: Teachers should only give modified tests to students who request it. Students who haven’t performed well on previous tests should not be given modified tests unless they request it. It can be deeply painful for a student to receive a modified test they have not requested. Always trust that your students can and will do better in the future, and never assume how smart they are or how well they can do (they’re usually smarter than you think).
I also want to say that a teacher’s job is to teach. They can test if they want to (or have to), but more than grading papers, their responsibility is making every student feel valued. Their job is to communicate love and confidence. That’s what builds a child’s future. Instead of giving unwanted, demoralizing modified tests, mark with rachmanus, and try to give the student the best mark you can justify giving her. This will restore the student’s dignity and can change her life.

NO MORE TEARS
(Re: Onion Fun, Inbox, Issue 482)
In response to the Inbox question about how to saute an onion properly, here’s how to do it: Put a pan on the fire so it gets heated. Dice the onion and put into the heated pan.
B.S.
Mix constantly so it doesn’t stick. When the onions start turning golden brown at the edges, you’ll know that all the liquid has evaporated, and it is time to add the oil and finish sauteing the onions.
Happy cooking!
IT’S A SIMCHA
(Re: POV, Issue 482)
Miriam
Reading POV, I was shocked at how bitter people are about attending simchas. Would you rather be menachem avel? It’s more convenient. You don’t have to get dressed up, you can go while the kids are in school, and you don’t need to spend more than ten minutes there.
Let’s shift our perspective and thank Hashem that we can go to Yiddishe simchas — despite the hassle.

MORE HOME, LESS WORK
I’m writing this letter at 7 p.m. on a Wednesday night. The little ones need baths, the older ones want supper (again), and in the middle of it all, I’m sitting and doing homework with my second grade daughter. She comes home close to 5 p.m., and she needs to eat supper, relax and play for an hour or two. (She’s on the bus by 8 a.m. That’s a nine-hour “workday” for a seven-year-old.) At around 7:30, she starts getting ready for her 8:00 bedtime. That leaves us the hour between 6:30 and 7:30 for homework — which is also the busiest time in a Yiddishe home.
To go through each of the subjects both teachers assign for homework takes a lot of time. It’s true that a few math examples don’t take that long to do, but there’s also reading practice, a worksheet, and three tasks for Yiddish homework too. It’s all very time-consuming, draining and frustrating at a time of day when we’re all tired and drained already.
My daughter is not yet old enough to take responsibility for her homework on her own, and I don’t have older children available to help. I realize that homework helps parents stay aware of their child’s progress, but I think work on one subject each night would suffice. Alternatively, homework in Yiddish and English could be assigned on alternating days. Or maybe there are other ways to diminish the time and stress homework involves.
I know this topic has been discussed previously, but I fail to understand why no changes have been made. If you’re a principal, maybe you have the power to reevaluate your school’s homework policies. If you’re a teacher, you might not be able to change the system, but you can change what you do in your class. I believe change is possible — and absolutely necessary.

Most frequently mentioned kitchen tool:
BETTY CROCKER
For your convenience, responses have been sorted by category. Clip and hang inside a kitchen cabinet; you never know when you’ll need it!
Toast baguettes and spread cream cheese on both sides. Place a scrambled egg inside, as well as any vegetable. It’s quick, filling and nutritious.
I keep one or two milchig frozen meals in my freezer and have a milchig convection oven. The oven takes about 5 minutes to preheat. A frozen pizza slice takes about 13 minutes to warm up. A frozen cauliflower pizza takes 20 minutes.
DAIRY
Pancakes! Make any basic pancake recipe; you most likely have all the ingredients at home. Add frozen blueberries/ chocolate chips/sprinkles to spruce it up. Serve with chocolate milk or hot cocoa for some more protein.
Homemade pizza! The recipe takes 5 minutes to put together using basic ingredients I always have handy: 2½ cups flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 tablespoon oil, 1 tablespoon baking powder, and ¾ cup warm water. Mix by hand, then roll out thinly into your Betty Crocker and bake for 5 minutes. Add sauce and cheese, and bake until cheese is bubbly. Enjoy!
MEAT
If all you have for supper is chicken, and you have no ingredients at home for a side dish, simply turn it into a sandwich! Layer toast, dressing of your choice and chicken — and supper is served! Bonus points for adding lettuce, pickles or tomatoes. I enjoy doing this with leftover chicken bottoms: I saute an onion, add the shredded chicken to the pan with whatever sauce I have on hand, then create the sandwich.
If I’m running late with supper, I slice potatoes, green beans and chicken cutlets, and put it all into a Ziploc bag with oil and spices. I shake it up and put it into the Betty Crocker. Supper is done minutes later.
I load wraps with ready chicken (or salami/ pastrami), and add pickles, tomato, mushrooms, onions and garlic mayonnaise. A wholesome and easy dinner.
Betty Crockers were created for last-minute supper crises! Mix some mayonnaise and spices in a bowl. Dump in some cutlets. Line the Betty Crocker with parchment paper. Spread out the cutlets, and in 10 minutes, you have dinner ready.
Chicken and potatoes or farfel in a pot with your favorite spices. Cook for about an hour, covered. If doing farfel, add water to cover and keep an eye on it so it doesn’t dry up. You can also add some broccoli for the last few minutes. Super easy, and everyone loves it.
Make a mix of mayo, spices, honey, mustard, garlic — whatever your family likes. Coat the cutlets with this mayo combo, then dip your cutlets in cornflakes crumbs. Spray generously with oil, and bake in the Betty Crocker for 5 minutes per side. For a side dish, cube potatoes, mix with basic spices and oil, and bake in the Betty Crocker for about 10 to 15 minutes.
Ground beef: Roll into patties (as is, no recipe for that) and put the patties onto the grill (summer) or Betty Crocker (winter). Put some frozen fries in the oven, and cut up fresh vegetables.
If I find myself out of breadcrumbs for chicken cutlets, I crush any available snack and use it instead of crumbs. From potato chips to onion rings to Bissli — we’ve tried many; none of them disappointed.
If you find yourself without eggs and you want to make chicken cutlets, you can use water or mayonnaise instead, and it tastes great.
Microwave a few cut-up potatoes in the microwave for 8 to 10 mins. Microwave franks for 2 to 3 minutes. Cut up franks, and mix everything with some barbecue sauce. Open a can of green beans, corn or pickles. Dinner is served!
Easy pulled chicken tacos: Pour any barbecue sauce over chicken cutlets, and bake uncovered. When done, shred it and serve it with tortilla chips. (Alternatively, you can also serve it on baguettes or in wraps.)
Idea for Sunday leftovers: Recreate your Shabbos food. Sautéed liver becomes chopped liver (add eggs and oil). Chicken from soup can be shredded and placed in a wrap or roll with some sauce and veggies. Add chicken soup to the cholent to make it saucier. Cook potatoes in your chicken soup, and blend to make cream of chicken soup. There you have it — a brand-new Sunday supper!
In a Ziploc bag, throw in chicken strips and veggies like broccoli, squash or mushrooms. Toss with spices, and broil in the oven for 15 minutes. Serve over a bed of lettuce or spring mix. This is always a winner!
I put a pack of frozen diced onions, a pack of frozen pepper strips, and cubed red potatoes in the Betty Crocker with some oil. While that “sautes,” I cube chicken cutlets and bread them by tossing in a Ziploc bag with cornflake crumbs. Then I add the cubed chicken to the Betty Crocker. Add a little garlic, sweet chili and spices (I use the honey garlic cutlet recipe that was featured here a while ago as inspiration for the flavor profile), and a balanced, healthy and delicious supper is done in 15 minutes!
PAREVE
Pop a few unpeeled potatoes in salted, boiling water, and cook for about 20 minutes. When done, drain the water, add butter (or oil), and cube or mash the potatoes to your liking. Delicious, easy and quick! I use red potatoes because the skin is soft, but for an emergency, regular potatoes should work too.
Combine two cans of sardines, oil, a half packet knaidel mix and one egg. Form patties, and bake in the oven or Betty Crocker for 10 minutes on each side. Serve in a pita pocket with cutup vegetables/salad. (The same patties recipe can be done with a pound of ground chicken/meat/turkey. Spray oil and bake, and serve as above.)
Make a fresh soup really quickly using frozen bags of veggies. My favorite one: frozen diced onions, frozen cubes of garlic, frozen sliced zucchini, frozen broccoli and frozen cauliflower. Cook until soft, and blend.
Fish and potatoes with broccoli in the Betty Crocker.
Scrambled eggs in a pita pocket with cut-up veggies.
Israeli station — fun and easy!
Pita, frozen falafel, store-bought chummus, frozen french fries and cut-up veggies (skip the diced salad).
A well-rounded, delicious meal!
Veggie omelet with toasted sourdough always hits the spot! I always have little containers with sautéed veggies in my freezer, and on those days (we all have them!), supper is ready in five! If I have 10 minutes, I add a salad or fruit smoothie. I think my family likes it better than proper fleishig suppers.
Rice cake, tuna, egg salad, avocado, raw veggies, and some dips or dressings. Generally, I have these on hand.
Fish sticks and french fries in the Betty Crocker.
Isn’t this what instant noodle soups were created for?
You know the end pieces of a loaf of bread that nobody touches? The slightly-smaller-lots-ofcrust pieces? So if your kids turn up their nose at them, too, listen up! I take those pieces off every new loaf of bread and freeze them in my “emergency stash collection.” Whenever I have a busy day, I whip out my carefullycollected bread ends and fry them as French toast. The kids love it! I let them add cinnamon and sugar as a special treat, and both kids and mommy are happy. Win-win! Next question:

A Shining Spark PARSHAS BO
Y. Levenstein
Big things were happening. The Bnei Yisroel were preparing for their redemption. Hashem told Moshe and Aharon to instruct the Yidden to take a lamb on the tenth day of the month, watch over it until the fourteenth day, and on that afternoon, they were to slaughter it. Then they were to take some of the blood and place it on the doorposts.
Rashi asks: Why did Hashem require that the animals be taken four days in advance, something that we were not required to do for the Korban Pesach of subsequent generations?
Citing the Mechilta, Rashi explains: The time had arrived for the fulfillment of the promise Hashem had made to Avraham Avinu decades before, namely that He would redeem his children. The problem was, the Yidden had no mitzvos that would give them the zechus to be redeemed. So Hashem gave them two mitzvos — the blood of milah and the blood of the Korban Pesach. That night, before performing the Korban Pesach, all Yidden were circumcised.
Rashi adds that since the Yidden were steeped in avodah zarah, Hashem told them, “Draw and take for yourselves,” meaning, withdraw yourselves from idolatry and take for yourselves the sheep for this mitzvah.
This is very interesting. The Yidden served avodah zarah, so much so that they had to be told to withdraw from it and take the sheep for a mitzvah instead. In fact, so involved were they in idolatry that the malachim asked Hashem, “What’s the difference between these and those?” They saw no difference between the Bnei Yisrael and the Egyptians — both were ovdei avodah zarah! Was the zechus of these two mitzvos alone really sufficient for the Yidden to merit being redeemed?
LONDON WAS IN THE MIDST of the Blitz. At about 4 p.m. on September 7, 1940, German bomber planes appeared above the British horizon and dropped high-explosive bombs over the city. The raids continued for 57 consecutive nights. Over the next eight months, the Blitz sowed fear and destruction in the city and claimed the lives of nearly 30,000 civilians.
During the daytime, the Royal Air Force attempted to take control over the enemy forces, but when night fell, they were simply powerless in stopping the German bombers from wreaking havoc. Under cover of night, the Luftwaffe had undisputed control.
As a measure of protection, blackout regulations were put in place. Families had to cover up all windows at night to make sure no light was visible outside. All street lamps were switched off. Any light could help the enemy bombers identify their targets.
Understandably, the darkness kept most people indoors, many of them huddled in shelters and hiding in the London Underground as air-raid sirens sounded, followed by bomb blasts, and finally the all-clear signals.
One evening, a man ventured outside. It was impossible for him to find his way in the total darkness. Suddenly, the heart-stopping rise and fall of the siren was heard, signaling an oncoming attack. Within moments, he heard explosions and reverberations of collapsing buildings. He was terrified! Here he was, standing exposed in the street! Hoping to calm himself, the man pulled out a cigarette. He struck a match and put the cigarette to his lips.
As if out of nowhere, a police officer was at his side. “Stop! Put that out!”
The man was immediately taken to the police station, where he was detained for the evening. It was a difficult night, filled with fear and

dread. By morning, he was brought before higher-ups to be sentenced.
When he heard the high fine, the man protested. “What did I do that warrants such a fine? I only lit a match!”
“You’re lucky your life was spared,” came the stern reply. “Your little match was spotted by the bombers. Yes, that tiny spark was like a lighthouse in the midst of dark, raging seas! Immediately after the police took you away, the warplanes swooped right down on the street where you were standing.”
“It can’t be,” the man argued. “How can you compare the tiny spark of a match to the bright light of a lighthouse?”
“When everything is 100% black,” the official explained, “the tiny flicker of a little match is especially bright.”
* * * * *
With this, we can answer our question. How could it be that the Bnei Yisrael merited being taken out of Mitzrayim for fulfilling only two mitzvos? They were in such a low state, barely distinguishable from the Egyptians!
Indeed, specifically because the Yidden were in the blackout of MemTes Shaarei Tumah, the two mitzvos they performed shone so brightly. There, in the dark depths of avodah zarah in the depraved kingdom of Mitzrayim, every little act emanated a glow luminous enough to draw them from darkness to light, from galus to geulah
Specifically in the darkness of our galus, every single mitzvah we do, every triumph over the obscurity and challenges that surround us, shines ever so much brighter before Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

Chaverim Welcomes 21 New Members
With the number of calls for help increasing dramatically over the past year, Chaverim of Rockland welcomed 21 new members and multiple new dispatchers last week to meet the growing demand for its services.
“The phones don’t stop,” Chaverim coordinator Yossi Margaretten told The Monsey View.
With the greater Monsey area expanding to include Haverstraw, Stony Point, Pomona, New City, Chestnut Ridge, Montebello and Nanuet, Chaverim has seen the need for having volunteers located in a much broader area than in the past.
The need for dispatchers has grown as well, as Chaverim’s call volume has swelled. While previously dispatchers were able to man the phones intermittently over a period of several hours, dispatch has become a full-time job, with a maximum shift of two hours.
Chaverim currently has approximately 200 volunteers and 35 dispatchers. As previously reported in The Monsey View, the organization answered more than 64,000 calls for help in 2024, a jump of over 11,000 calls from the previous calendar year.
Eisenbach’s Advocacy a Boon for Spring Valley Residents
Disruptions are being kept to a minimum on heavily trafficked days in Spring Valley, the result of years of bridge-building with local utility companies.
Village trustee Yisroel Eisenbach has been working closely with utilities providers over the past five years to avoid scheduling construction and other projects on Erev Shabbos and Erev Yom Tov, days when many locals are on the road, traveling or taking care of last-minute errands. Orange & Rockland reached out to Eisenbach at the start of 2025 for a detailed Yom Tov schedule, as they have over the past several years, a clear acknowledgement by the company that it is prioritizing communal needs.
Veolia Water and other utilities have also been in touch with Eisenbach about arranging local work, further proof that Eisenbach’s dedicated efforts continue to benefit village residents.
Gas Station Manager Tracks Down Monsey Man To Return Missing Wallet
The service station at the bottom of the Palisades Parkway may be familiar to Monsey residents as a great place to refuel
on their way into the city, but it is also becoming known as the workplace of a very honest individual.
Gas station manager Mohammed Allam discovered a wallet containing a driver’s license, credit card and other valuables that had been left behind last week by a customer. Alam began asking his Jewish customers if they knew the owner of the missing wallet, finally striking paydirt after two days.
The owner of the wallet, a Monsey resident, was elated to discover that his wallet had been located. When he returned to the gas station, Allam gave him his wallet and offered him a cup of coffee on the house.
This isn’t the first time that Allam, who has managed the station for nearly 30 years, has reunited customers with their misplaced possessions. Allam discovered a bag of passports that had been left behind at the gas station a short time ago, and managed to get those important documents back to their owner as well.
Act Now To Become REAL ID Compliant, Says DMV
With the looming deadline requiring travelers to have federal identification to go through airport security, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is encouraging state residents to avoid the last-minute rush and upgrade their identification now.
As of May 7, 2025, fliers and those entering secure federal facilities will be required to have federally approved identification, which includes a United States passport or the DMVissued REAL ID or Enhanced ID. According to guidance issued earlier this month by the United States Department of Homeland Security, federal agencies will have a grace period of up to two years to phase in the identification requirement if they publish details of those plans on their websites before the official May REAL ID deadline.
“You don’t want to wait until the last minute to get into the DMV if you still need a REAL ID or an Enhanced ID and you have upcoming travel plans,” said DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. “ We do not yet know how the REAL ID Act will be enforced on May 7, so the best way to ensure smooth travel and avoid delays is to get to the DMV and upgrade your ID right away.”
The upgraded licenses can only be issued to those who apply in person at a DMV office to replace their state-issued drivers’ licenses, non-driver identification cards, and learners’ permits.
There is no charge for a REAL ID above the regular renewal fee, and even those whose identification is not yet up for renewal are being urged to upgrade to the federal identification. There is an additional $30 cost for an Enhanced ID, which can be used to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico and

Spirit Takes the High Road With Modest Attire Policy
It may be known for its no-frills approach to aviation, but Spirit Airlines is hoping to remake its image by requiring passengers to be properly attired on its planes.
Aviation Source News reported that Spirit announced the change last week. The airline has previously prevented travelers from boarding its planes because of their dress, and issued the guidelines to prevent similar occurrences. Under the new airline’s new contract of carriage, passengers who buy tickets on Spirit are required to be “adequately covered,” wear shoes, and cover up any tattoos or garments that contain offensive content.
The move has sparked controversy, but is being hailed as positive by those who believe in the importance of family-friendly flights that adhere to a certain level of decorum. How Spirit will be enforcing what are most certainly subjective guidelines has yet to be clarified.
Cicadas Are Coming, But Hopefully Not Here
News reports have been emerging in recent weeks about a group of cicadas that are expected to come out this spring in more than a dozen states, including New York, after a seventeen-year hiatus. But if you are holding this magazine in your hands, chances are excellent that you won’t be seeing the noisy, red-eyed winged nuisances at your home, at least not for a few more years.
Cicadas emerge in the spring when temperatures eight inches below the ground warm to 64 degrees, with different broods emerging at steady intervals. This year’s group, known as Brook XIV, will be creeping out of the soil by the millions in Georgia, Kentucky, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia for the first time since 2008. According to Cicadamania.com, only New Yorkers living in Nassau and Suffolk counties will be affected by the emergence of Brood XIV.
Jewish communities in the Lakewood suburb of Manchester and in Cincinnati, however, may well find themselves surrounded by cicadas from mid-May to late June, until the newly hatched baby bugs burrow underground, where they will live for the next seventeen years.
At least parts of New York can expect to see cicadas coming out in 2030, when Brood II emerges, with Brood VII due to pop up in 2035. The trillions of cicadas in Brood X, the largest bunch by far, will be showing up in 2038.

chapter FIFTEEN
Before she even opened her eyes, Kaily remembered: I’m in Ma’s house. I live there now
She opened her eyes and was immediately engulfed in the scent of coffee, the strong dark roast her father had favored. There was no coffee brewing; there was no one, certainly not her father, around to brew it. But the smell lingered. Had her father once spilled coffee in the bedroom? Or was her mind playing tricks on her?
It’s Rosh Hashanah. You need to get up.
Kaily pulled up the covers, imagining her father’s quiet, stoic presence enveloping the house with a Rosh Hashanah aura.
She remembered how he would wake up before dawn and pad to the dining room with a dark coffee. He would take a Tehillim and a Sfas Emes and softly hum for an hour or two before heading to shul for a full day of davening.
All those years that she lived downstairs, she would stand on the third step, listening, allowing her heart and mind to fill up with the awe and fear of the day. Then she would hurry, hurry, hurry. Dress the boys, dress herself in her ivory cashmere sweater, and hurry to shul with her parents.
Her father would hold Chaim’s and Gedalya’s little hands and then Sruly’s hand as Chaim and Gedalya became too old to hold his hand as they walked to shul. There was quiet, strong love in those hands. They didn’t look like poor fatherless
boys as they galloped to keep up with her father.
She missed her boys so much.
Of course, she understood that Rosh Hashanah wasn’t a Yom Tov for hosting. She knew the boys belonged at their yeshivos. But she longed for a male presence to set the rhythm of the day, to go to shul and come back and bring with him the feeling of Yom Tov.
She lay back onto her pillow, willing the tears to remain in her eyes by the sheer force of gravity. She missed being a child, a daughter to a man who protected her.
How had it happened that she’d gone from being a daughter — yes, a divorced mother of three, but still — to carrying the load of her life all by herself?
She turned over to make sure her mother was sleeping deeply. She was. Kaily tiptoed out of the room, leaving the warmth behind. Like the many changes in her life, no one had asked her about sleeping upstairs, because there was no question. Of course she would.
And she would. Willingly. Graciously. But all she wanted was to be asked. To be spoken to as an adult. Not as the convenient single sister who — such hashgacha! — lived downstairs.
She suddenly longed for a dark coffee. She padded to the kitchen in her robe and snood.
THERE WAS QUIET, STRONG LOVE IN THOSE HANDS. THEY DIDN’T LOOK LIKE POOR FATHERLESS BOYS AS THEY GALLOPED TO KEEP UP WITH HER FATHER
CHANIE SPIRA
In every Lux Pavone piece, pure linen becomes the canvas for timeless artistry. In a modern world of mass production, our pieces are symbolic of artisan tradition, where every fiber is carefully chosen and every pattern meticulously planned. As candlelight flickers across its surface and fine china casts gentle shadows along its folds, our tablecloths transform mere dinners into moments of transcendent luxury.
No ivory cashmere sweater because it’s chilly in shul, and isn’t this a perfect Rosh Hashanah sweater because it’s white and warm? No taking along her mother’s favorite crocheted pashmina to throw over her shoulders when Unesaneh Tokef made her shiver.
This Rosh Hashanah, it would be her and her mother at home. Listening to her cough out the lingering effects of smoke inhalation. And later, the physical therapist would even drive by to check on them and cause all the shades on the street to go up, because who dares drive on such a holy day?
HER FINGERS TREMBLED AS SHE OPENED THE SEFER. HER LIPS MURMURED THE TIMELESS WORDS AS HER THOUGHTS RACED. PLEASE, HASHEM!
This arrangement, too, was self-understood. And she got it. She knew the story of the Sassover Rebbe rocking the cradle on Kol Nidrei night. She knew that the kohanim in the Beis Hamikdash were busy cleaning and cooking all through Yom Kippur because that was their avodas hakodesh.
She knew she couldn’t expect Perela to be here on Yom Tov when all of her kids were home. She knew Eli’s wife was busy from morning to night just trying to keep their family together.
But she wanted to be asked. To discuss it with someone. So someone would know what it would mean for her, what she would have to do, and what she wouldn’t get to do. Did her siblings even grasp what it meant to have so much responsibility without sharing it with anyone?
Kaily shivered. Rosh Hashanah needed that old crocheted pashmina. She headed to her mother’s coat closet and removed it from the top shelf. She wrapped it tightly around her shoulders and sat down with a Tehillim.
Her fingers trembled as she opened the sefer. Her lips murmured the timeless words as her thoughts raced. Please, Hashem! Let Sruly be happy with Bina and Mommy be healthy and Eli have parnassah and an easier life with Chuni.
And please, Hashem, give Chaim and Gedalya, their wives Malky and Suri, and their sweet children ah gutte, zisse, gebentchte yahr. And just please, Hashem, can you give me the ko’ach to deal with another year?
Her eyes fell on the adorable pictures her kids had sent for Yom Tov. Moishy, Chaim’s son, smiled up at her. He was really growing up. And Gedalya’s baby Yanky, named after her father, alav hashalom, was so sweet and innocent.
Thank You, Hashem. I know you give me so much. Please, Hashem, help me perceive the good, too.
The tears fell softly, only the early morning quiet witness to her tefillos.
She sipped the coffee. It was scalding and bitter. But good and deep. It tasted of Rosh Hashanah. But it needed a good piece of dark chocolate to go with it.
Bless Bina for sending that chocolate platter. And she hadn’t even called to thank her! What would she think of her?
Kaily hurried downstairs and removed the ruined platter
KAILY’S EYES SKIMMED OVER THE NEXT FEW LINES, READING THE WORDS, BUT NOT COMPREHENDING A SYLLABLE
from the top of the fridge. A white, textured envelope with her name written on it fell to the floor. She bent to pick it up.
But it was not Bina’s handwriting. Only one person in her life had such a large, artistic and exotic handwriting.
Mira?! Why had Mira sent her chocolate? There was no one like her.
Thank you, Hashem, for Mira, she whispered. How would she ever have coped without her?
She took the chocolate and the card to the couch.
She popped a chocolate into her mouth and opened the card.
Dear Kaily,
Ah gut gebentcht yahr. May this year be one of simcha and nachas. How do I thank you for another year of friendship?
I also want to share some news. It’s hard for me to say it, especially since you’ve been going through such a tough time. I tried telling you a few times, but the timing was never quite right. But I want you to be the first to know that I’m getting engaged!
The chocolate clogged her throat.
It’s going to be official on Sunday, Tzom Gedalya.
Kaily’s eyes skimmed over the next few lines, reading the words, but not comprehending a syllable.
I’m looking forward to seeing you at the vort!
Love, Mira
“Kaily?” Roiza said as Kaily rotated her right ankle.
“Hm?”
She wasn’t listening. Three times every single day, Kaily insisted on exercising all of Roiza’s muscles “so they’ll be ripe and ready when your hip heals.” And now, after having missed two days over Yom Tov, it seemed that Kaily wanted to make up for it.
“Kaily,” Roiza said again, “don’t you have an event tonight?”
Kaily stopped mid-rotation.
“H-how did you…? I mean, no.”
“No?” Roiza responded.
“No.” Kaily resumed the rotations.
“I have one,” Roiza announced. “And I was hoping you’d come with me.”
“Oh?” Kaily switched legs. First the toes, then the ankles, slowly move up toward the knees. She studiously avoided looking up.
“You can’t skip the vort tonight,” Roiza said, past the pain in her legs, past the humiliation of having her daughter exercise her muscles.
“But how do you know?” Kaily demanded.
“I was invited. By the kallah herself.” Roiza looked at her daughter intently. She knew her daughter was hurt — if her puffy eyes were any indication — but she also knew that it was for her benefit to get past it.
“You intend… to go? You’re having surgery tomorrow.”
“The surgery is a joke, and you know it.”
“Not a very funny one,” Kaily muttered. She stretched her aching arms.
“It’s not. And the vort will help me forget about it.”
“I’m not going,” Kaily said flatly. “I’m too exhausted from Yom Tov.”
“Right. And you’re also totally in the mood of fish, right?”
“I’m not going. Let’s try to stand up.” Kaily rolled the walker toward her mother. But Roiza didn’t get up.
“Kaily, let’s make a deal. I’ll get up and practice walking, and you’ll come to the vort with me.”
“No!” Kaily said. Her voice was so pained and angry, Roiza recoiled.
“Are you sure?” she asked.
Kaily nodded.
Roiza stayed quiet. Then she took a deep breath and stretched her hands to reach the walker. She would have to get back on her feet.
Silently, inch by painful inch, she heaved herself up. For her daughter.

The premise and promise of chomesh
CHAPTER 2 OF 4
AHUVA GANTRY
The Gantry family begins giving chomesh — another ten percent of their income after maaser — and sees an extra dose of siyata d’Shmaya
No matter how much we believed and saw that giving chomesh was bestowing upon us real bracha, it was often difficult to give one-fifth of our earnings — even while shefa kept knocking at the door.
Hashem wants us to sweat a little so we can still use our bechirah to make good choices. We know it now, and we knew it then, but somehow, the nisayon never disappears — even when the flow of blessing is so obvious, so comforting.
We’d just bought a house, and money was tight. There were no huge bills hanging over our heads, and we didn’t owe more money than planned, but still. Yaakov was mostly learning, and chomesh was one-fifth of our earnings! It didn’t amount to a lot of money, but that was because we weren’t earning that much money to begin with. It wasn’t an easy sacrifice to make.
Doubt began to niggle at our hearts, and we told ourselves, well, this is a tight spot we’re in. Let’s stop giving chomesh for a bit. Maybe things will ease up a little.
It was a foolish mistake, but a human one.
The thing is, however, that when Hashem manages our money, the math doesn’t quite add up. Here we were, tuck-
ing more of our money into our own pockets, but somehow, there was less shefa, less bracha
After a year or two of this, I turned to Yaakov and said, “Listen here. This isn’t working. We need more money. And the only way to make this happen is if we give more money.”
And that was that. We were giving chomesh once again.
* * * * *
Just like the many miracles of daily life, the countless miracles of our chomesh story disappear into the black hole we call “normal.” But sometimes things happen that make Yaakov and I look at each other, awestruck, and we know we won’t forget that one so fast.
That’s what it was like when we needed a new car. We didn’t want a new car. We needed one. We’d financed our old car, and now it was both creaking with old
age — it only drove with a mini screwdriver stuck into a space near the gear stick — and was also too small to transport our whole family.
But a larger car meant a larger expense each month. And to make the move even harder, we’d need to put down over $5,000 at the time of purchase. This included a $2,500 loss on our old car and the down payment for our new one. We were going to go for it anyway, but there was no denying it was a stretch.
At this point, my husband was working at a men’s clothing store in the morning, and when talking cars with his coworkers, his boss said, “Hold on. Are you buying the car from Katz?”
Turns out that Yaakov’s boss, Heshy, had done some business with Mr. Katz a while back, and he was pretty sure there was still some money owed to him.
“Look here,” Heshy said. “I think Katz still owes me a little money. Not much, or else I’d have taken care of it, but if you can get it, it’s yours to keep.”
A pretty entertaining conversation with Mr. Katz followed. In the end, it turned out that Mr. Katz didn’t actually owe Heshy any money, but since Heshy had offered
DID YOU KNOW?
Yaakov the funds, he decided to stand behind his word and gave him a $1,000 bonus toward the car.
Then we found a new buyer for our old car, and we sold it without a loss.
Is the story over yet? No.
A few days later, my boss emailed me with the happy news that he was giving me a raise. The timing was both so arbitrary, and so very precise, it was surreal. The difference in monthly payments — and insurance, and gas — was suddenly a non-issue. Like so many times in the past, the money gap was filled before it was even created.
The remaining $1,500 for the down payment we managed to pull off fairly easily, and Yaakov signed on the dotted line. The sale of our old car and the purchase of our new one were underway.
The very next morning, the new car was parked in our driveway, and later that evening, the driver hired to take away our old car arrived.
He soon appeared at our doorstep, holding the small screwdriver that kept the car going.
“Here,” he said, holding it out like a lost hundred dollar bill. “I think you left this in the car.”
“Oh,” Yaakov said with a tiny laugh. “I think you’ll need that to drive.”
The driver looked at him strangely, but tucked the screwdriver into his pocket.
Giving maaser or chomesh begins with keeping a careful record and setting the money aside. Even if you’ll need to borrow back some of the funds until you can afford to give the complete sum, first put the money aside so it’s been taken from your income.
Yaakov wished him good night, silently wished both the screwdriver and car a semi-fond good riddance, and closed the door.

T. GESTETNER
Nobody likes to feel embarrassed. Nobody likes to make a mistake, be mocked or be spotted in an awkward situation. Yet we all experience shameful moments; this shows we are human.
The Gemara in Sotah (8b) explains that a person would rather experience physical pain than shame. But why? What is it about the sensation of shame that we all want to escape? Is all shame bad? Can there be any gain to the pain of shame?
Let’s examine the Torah perspective on shame, through the annals of Tanach.
SINCE THERE WAS NO YETZER HARA, THERE WAS NO CONCEPT OF BUSHA. SHAME ONLY EXISTS DUE TO THE PRESENCE OF THE YETZER HARA
Adam and Chava
They were the only two people around — husband and wife, Adam and Chava. Alone in Gan Eden, in those very first hours of their existence, Adam and Chava sinned. They ate the fruit of the eitz hada’as. Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they discovered they were naked. They heard the voice of Hashem and instinctively hid.
That’s when Hashem uttered the famous question, the one that has been echoing ever since: “Ayekah — Where are you?!”
Adam replied, “I was afraid, because I am naked, so I hid.”
And thus, we are introduced to the very first emotion mentioned in the Torah — shame. Adam felt ashamed that he had fallen, ashamed to be found unclothed, despite the fact that just moments before, he sensed no humiliation associated with his natural appearance. And what was his knee-jerk response? To hide! He wished the earth would open up and swallow him, much like our typical response to extreme mortification.
What is this emotion of busha Adam sensed? Why do we recoil in shame when we realize we’ve made a mistake or perceive a flaw in our character?
Before the cheit, Adam had no yetzer hara. His entire being was fully focused on doing the will of his Creator. Completely pure, nothing stood between himself and Hakadosh Baruch Hu, as the Meshech Chochmah explains.
Since there was no yetzer hara, there was no concept of busha. Shame only exists due to the presence of the yetzer hara. After eating from the eitz hadaas, Adam was given his archenemy: the yetzer hara. And with it, the world was introduced to the struggle of shame.
Yosef and His Brothers
The first word of the Torah, תישארב, can be rearranged into two words: “ ארי — respect, awe,” and “ תשב — shame.” We are rewarded tremendously for serving Hakadosh Baruch Hu with humility — the positive application of shame.
(TikuneiZohar)
It had been more than two decades since the shevatim had made the fateful decision to sell their handsome brother, Yosef, into slavery. As they went to Mitzrayim to purchase wheat for their family so they could be sustained during the famine, they were reminded of their brother. It was highly likely that he had somehow landed in Mitzrayim, the global superpower at the time.
Yet, despite the intriguing “royal” treatment the brothers received — being accused as spies and later being invited to a lavish banquet — the brothers did not recognize Yosef. Even when they saw how much the viceroy knew about them as he seated them in perfect order around the table, they did not suspect that the man sitting before them was their long-lost brother.
Suddenly, the viceroy was overcome by emotion and couldn’t suppress himself any longer. He dismissed the servants from the room to minimize his brothers’ shame and called out the famous words: “Ani Yosef ! I am your brother, Yosef! Is my father still alive?”
The brothers’ response? Silence.
They were too shocked to speak. Too ashamed to respond.
When the stately viceroy revealed himself as the very brother they had sold into slavery, it became clear that they had made a terrible mistake by selling him into slavery. Their shame at being suddenly shown to be wrong after all these years rendered them speechless.
The question, “Is my father still alive?” further aggravated the brothers, as it hinted at an accusation. Here, the brothers were so concerned about Binyamin and were ready to put their own lives on the line, claiming their father would not survive if he was not brought back home safely, yet years earlier, they hadn’t taken these considerations when they’d sold Yosef.
The midrash says that the great embarrassment the shevatim experienced at that moment is nothing compared to our embarrassment when we come to Shamayim on our Judgement Day.
The Beis Halevi explains that our shame after 120 will come from our internal inconsistencies that will be highlighted to us. You had no time to do that favor, but you did have time to do something for yourself? When Yosef pointed out the shevatim’s embarrassing inconsistency, they had no answer. Likewise, any excuse we may have will fall flat in the Next World.
As long as we are in the state of a “holech,” capable and able to improve our ways, our sense of shame can be channeled to help us prevent such shameful judgement.
Korbanos and Teshuvah
he seeks atonement for now, but for the rest of his sins as well! As the Netziv points out, we learn this from the fact that he brings specifically a female goat.
You see, one may also bring a female lamb for a chatas, and when he does, the pasuk says, “He shall be forgiven for his sin.” While walking a lamb up to the Har Habayis, the people
As he walks up toward the Har Habayis, his ears feel warm and take on a deepening shade of crimson. He tugs at the string leading his female goat and quickens his speed. He is bringing a korban chatas, an offering for an aveirah punishable by kareis, which he did unintentionally.
The humiliation he is experiencing is not for naught. In fact, he will receive magnanimous forgiveness, not only for the sin
WHEN A PERSON FEELS EMBARRASSMENT OVER HIS SIN, SAYS THE NETZIV, HE IS FORGIVEN FOR ALL OF HIS AVEIROS, AS THE PASUK SAYS IN A MORE GENERAL TERM, “HE SHALL BE FORGIVEN”
around may not realize the person had sinned, since the lamb offering is brought for other kinds of korbanos as well.
The female goat, on the other hand, is only brought for a korban chatas. By choosing to bring the goat, the sinner chooses to humiliate himself. When a person feels embarrassment over his sin, says the Netziv, he is forgiven for all of his aveiros, as the pasuk says in a more general term, “He shall be forgiven.”
It’s incredible to note how the Torah takes our humiliation into account! Every ounce of shame affects greater forgiveness.
The Defining Character of a Yid
Dovid Hamelech describes three characteristics Hakadosh Baruch Hu gifted Klal Yisroel: “Rachmanim, bayshanim v’gomlei chasadim — Yidden are compassionate, ashamed of doing wrong, and perform acts of kindness.”
These traits are intrinsic to Klal Yisroel; they’re in our blood. Dovid notes that when you see someone who has no bashfulness, it is clear his ancestors did not stand at Har Sinai.
Bashfulness. It is the ability to evaluate ourselves with brutal honesty and face the parts within that aren’t yet perfect. It is the first step to stopping us from doing wrong. And it causes us to think before saying something, to make sure we won’t shame or hurt another. Bashfulness means feeling self-conscious before others and before Hakadosh Baruch Hu.
The Mishnah in Avos (5:20) says, “Boshes panim l’Gan Eden.” When a person loses his emotion of busha, he is liable to behave inappropriately, without considering societal norms. Yet one who channels this painful yet powerful emotion properly, his reward is supreme.
Red as a Beet
Miss Weiss notices her eighth grade students’ snickers. She looks down and is mortified to realize she is wearing mismatched shoes. Her cheeks turn beet red.
Chany runs down the hallway. Suddenly, she slips on some water and finds herself sprawled out on the floor. Before she can dust herself off, she feels her cheeks glow crimson.
Yechiel gives his chavrusa a friendly slap on the back. The man turns around to face him; it is his rosh kollel. Yechiel’s face turns hot.
What is it about embarrassing situations that causes one to blush?
Blushing is the body’s natural response to emotional stress. When faced with embarrassing circumstances, the nervous system activates a fightflight-freeze response. The heart rate increases, and with it, the blood vessels in the face widen, drawing more blood to the surface. The cheeks automatically feel warm and take on a red shade. Blushing is totally normal and nothing to be ashamed of. But if you’d like to stop that redness, the most important thing to do is relax. Breathe slowly and deeply. Now smile; it may fool your body into thinking you aren’t stressed. Move to a cool spot or take a sip of water to cool down. Try and close your eyes for a moment, imagining that the people who just witnessed your clumsiness and may be judging you — often the root cause for that sense of humiliation — have disappeared, and the uncomfortable situation has never occurred.
It’s interesting to note that Chazal call humiliating another “halbanas panim,” whitening of the face. Does a shamed person turn red or white?
Rav Ovadia of Bartenura explains that, at first, an embarrassed person will turn red in the face, as he experiences initial indignation at his shame. The next step in his response is to turn inward, to focus on his internal sense of pain, and that’s when the blood drains from his face, leaving him a pale white.
The Midrash Shmuel says about a person who is truly embarrassed, “His face first turns red, and then turns white, because due to the magnitude of his shame, his neshamah ‘flies away,’ as if it wishes to leave the body. Once the blood returns to its source, his face turns white, like someone who has died…”
This aligns with the Gemara (Bava Metzia 58b) that states, “One who shames his fellow in public is as if he shed blood.”
Shame is a powerful tool. One of the positive results it can bring about is teshuvah, a deep inner cleansing. Shame can ultimately lead us to feel positive about our painful feelings. It’s a form of suffering, but it’s a productive suffering — one that motivates us to keep away from falling into the yetzer hara’s trap again. It spurs us to improve and elevate ourselves, and ultimately helps bring about a kaparah
The Gemara in Brachos (12b) says, “One who does an aveirah and is embarrassed of it, all of his aveiros are forgiven.” Shame is a sign that one truly does not want to do wrong, and regrets having done so. This alone has the power to atone for his actions.
This kind of busha — embarrassment of Hakadosh Baruch Hu — is a positive and desirable trait.
Dovid Hamelech
Facing rebellion by his very own son Avshalom, Dovid Hamelech was on the run. As he fled Yerushalayim, he was accosted by Shimi ben Geira, a descendant of Shaul Hamelech, who hurled stones and curses upon him. Shimi ben Geira called Dovid “wicked” and a “man of blood.”
Dovid’s response to the insults was simple yet incredibly inspiring: silence.
In his most vulnerable state, the king reacted in the most noble of manners. He refused to respond, refused to allow himself to be drawn into dispute, but chose to swallow his disgrace.
Those around him were less forgiving. His general, Yoav ben Tzeruya, begged, “Let me kill him!”
Yet Dovid refused. “Let him curse me,” he said, “because Hashem told him to do so.”
Dovid saw straight through the assailant, recognizing it wasn’t Shimi ben Geira who was defaming him; rather, this
SHAME IS A SIGN THAT ONE TRULY DOES NOT WANT TO DO WRONG, AND REGRETS HAVING DONE SO. THIS ALONE HAS THE POWER TO ATONE FOR HIS ACTIONS
shame was a custom-made message to him, sent directly from Hashem.
At that moment, Chazal say, Dovid earned the privilege of becoming the fourth leg of Hashem’s chariot, alongside the three Avos. This was his reward for recognizing that his personal troubles came from Hashem, instead of directing his wrath on the person causing the humiliation.
Every challenge we face is a test from Hashem. When we are the recipient of someone’s insult, we can choose to take it to heart or recognize that this shame was aimed at us, directly from Hashem.
True, it takes gargantuan strength to keep quiet in the face of insult. Chazal say, “Those who are insulted and do not insult, who hear their shame and do not respond… about them the pasuk says, ‘They who love Him are like the sun going forth in its might.’”
Withstanding the test of insult makes one beloved by Hashem. Ultimately, all brachos are sure to follow.
Take this modern-day incident — a display of middos, inner work and tolerance. It was a Friday night, at a seudah served to some hundred guests in the modest Machlis home in Yerushalayim. One Sefardi guest, who was apparently tasting gefilte fish for the first time in his life, was displeased.
“Who made this fish?” he demanded. “You have no idea how to make fish! With sugar? Matzah meal? This isn’t fish!”
To everyone’s surprise, Rebbetzin Machlis, who had been cooking and hosting huge crowds each week for decades, spoke up. “You’re right,” she said. “I don’t know how to make fish. Do you want to teach me?”
Sure enough, the following Thursday, the man showed up and gave Rebbetzin Machlis a step-by-step tutorial on how to prepare authentic Moroccan fish. That week, as the guests received their portions of warm fish, the Sefardi guest stood up and took credit for it.
“Do you know why there’s fish tonight?” he asked. “Because I taught her how to make it!”
Rebbetzin Machlis swallowed her pride. She bore insult with grace, not only remaining quiet, but even bolstering another’s feelings while putting her own to the side.
Mar Ukva
Mar Ukva, a reish galusa in the times of the Amoraim, was very kind and giving. He felt the plight of a certain pauper in town and decided to help him. Every day, on his way to the beis midrash, he would stop at his home and slip four coins under the door. This provided the poor family with tremendous relief. The poor man was curious to know who his benevolent benefactor was, and he decided to look out and see for himself.
That day, Mar Ukva’s wife accompanied him to the beis midrash. As they approached the house to drop off the money, the door opened, and Mar Ukva and his wife immediately began to run away. Mar Ukva did not want his recipient to see him and thus be ashamed. The couple ran as quickly as they could, and ended up jumping into a hot oven (whose coals had just been removed).
Why did Mar Ukva go to such lengths to avoid being discovered?
The Gemara (Kesuvos 67b) explains, “It is preferable for a person to throw himself into a fiery furnace than to embarrass his friend in public.”
How powerful it is to refrain from causing shame to another!
Here’s a contemporary tale about the lengths one can go to avoid shaming another, simply by being tuned in to the feelings of those around them.
EVERY CHALLENGE WE FACE IS A TEST FROM HASHEM. WHEN WE ARE THE RECIPIENT OF SOMEONE’S INSULT, WE CAN CHOOSE TO TAKE IT TO HEART OR RECOGNIZE THAT THIS SHAME WAS AIMED AT US, DIRECTLY FROM HASHEM
It happened during this yeshiva zman. A prominent maggid shiur was delivering a shiur on the topic of a “levi pasul,” or a disqualified levi, born through an illicit marriage. One talmid, whose name happens to be Levi, walked in a bit late, after the shiur had already begun. The maggid shiur was about to say the words “levi pasul,” but he stopped mid-sentence and waited several moments. Everyone looked around. What had happened?
“Levi just walked in,” the maggid shiur finally said, and then resumed his talk. He didn’t want his talmid to think he was referring to him because he had just walked in late!
May we all acquire the skill of swallowing insults sent our way and develop the art of sensitivity to those around us. Additionally, may we all channel our natural trait of busha to bring us closer to Hakadosh Baruch Hu and shine brightly with the intrinsic glow of a Yid.

UNFORTUNATELY MINE IN TIME,
Some moments in life are a joy to relive, even if only in conversation. But others we just want to eradicate from memory, and pretend they never happened in the first place…

Working as a secretary in a school’s payroll department is intense. My responsibilities involve organizing, reviewing and reporting monthly payroll. The thrill of knowing that staff members depend on me to receive their paychecks on time, allowing them to provide for their families, keeps me motivated.
As with many mosdos, funding payroll can be challenging. While we continue to collect tuition and secure whatever government funding is available, there are times when those eagerly awaited paychecks are delayed by a month or two.
One particular year, both the June and July paychecks were postponed. After receiving numerous anxious phone calls from staff members, I found myself uncomfortably explaining that there was little I could do to expedite the process. Then I realized that as the secretary, I had a role to play. I could print the checks, prepare them, and seal them in envelopes ahead of time. This proactive step meant that when the funding finally arrived, I could mail the checks immediately, without any delay. When the time came to send them out, I felt satisfied, knowing that having prepared the checks in advance saved a day in the process.
Until I received the first call, followed by another, and yet another. The office phones were ringing nonstop, lines flashing like fireworks, while I tried to soothe the frustrated and understandably upset staff members.
It turned out that the checks had been mailed without any signatures. In my excitement to get the checks out quickly, I had overlooked signing them, and they couldn’t be deposited.
Some staff members were furious, others were annoyed, and yet others were understanding. All I could do was apologize, listen, and inform them that they would need to come down to my office in the sweltering August heat to have their checks stamped with the administrator’s signature.

AS TOLD TO GOLDIE HIRSCH
The days leading up to Sukkos were chaotic. Hectic household, crowded streets, and all the Erev Yom Tov hustle and bustle. I had errands to run, so I paused my cooking and got ready to leave the house. I gathered my money, phone and list, and on the way out of the house, grabbed a full garbage bag that was waiting to be taken out.
But Yiddishe mammes are busy. And have a lot on their minds. As I mentally reviewed the Sukkos menus, which guests were coming for which meals, and how the seating would work, I discovered myself wandering along Thirteenth Avenue, several blocks from home, still clutching the garbage bag like it was the latest fashion statement.
I scanned the avenue, hoping to find somewhere I could leave it. But no. Not on Erev Sukkos. On Erev Sukkos, the streets were mobbed with people, the curbs teeming with sukkah vendors eagerly hawking and haggling over their esrogim, lulavim, and sukkah decorations. There was no way or place for me to gracefully get rid of the garbage bag.
I trekked all the way home and put the garbage bag in its rightful place. As for the errands… They waited patiently for the next day.
It was a minor oversight, but it caused anxiety for over a hundred staff members and left one young and overeager secretary feeling utterly mortified.
MARKED WITH SHAME

Decades ago, a few local mosdos offered a government-subsidized college mentoring program. Through this program, students who signed up met with their professors one-on-one once a week in a yeshiva building, got work assigned to be turned in the next week, and then took a final at the end of the semester. I grabbed this golden opportunity to
HUNGRY GUESTS
TZIVI LIEBER
When we were teenagers, my sister and I once went away for Shabbos. We stayed at the home of relatives, a middleaged couple who were the nicest people. They urged us to “take food, take whatever you want,” and they actually had fully stocked cabinets that were so tempting. But we were too embarrassed to nonchalantly open up the cabinets and take food, especially when our hosts never seemed to be eating. Friday night, after the meal, we were nice and relaxed, but a little hungry. The house was so quiet, we decided to dare it. We crept downstairs, blankets wrapped around our robes to hide the food — just in case. Each stair seemed to creak horribly. As we reached the bottom of the stairs, we realized that our host was not safely in bed like we thought, but sleeping lightly in an armchair in the foyer.
We looked at each other, and wordlessly decided to still go for it. We got to the kitchen. Took out some cookies and licorice. Padded silently back to the stairs.
I felt a laugh bubble up inside of me and didn’t dare look at my sister.
One step, two steps. In a minute we would be safely back in bed. Just a few more steps...
But then a stair creaked. A laugh emerged. A heavy footstep landed — And our host’s eyes flew open to find his two guests open-mouthed, a shower of cookies cascading onto the stairs.
The worst part was that during the Shabbos morning meal, our host turned to his wife with a smile and said, “A big portion for our guests, okay? I think they’re hungry…”
get my degree in a kosher environment. Despite being a busy working mother, it worked for me because there was no time spent sitting through lectures in class.
But making it work doesn’t mean it was easy. Going to school as a teacher and student simultaneously is challenging. Throw in being a mother of a few children and a daughter of aging parents, and you can picture how stressful life was for me at that time.
I pushed through week by week. When finals and reports loomed, I found myself slowly sinking as I grasped for more time in my day.
On the last night before college finals began, I met a friend of mine who was also enrolled in the program. We stood together at the table where the professor of our course, “Teaching Math to Elementary School,” was handing out the requirements for the term paper. We were both overwhelmed by the workload, so perhaps because we had each other for support, we felt comfortable complaining bitterly to the professor that the requirements were way too difficult, that there
was no way we could do it, that she was expecting too much, and could she please make things easier for us. We pleaded our case with a lot more drama than was warranted, but we were desperate.
Fully immersed in my en treaties, I was oblivious to anything else — until my eyes caught sight of someone standing to the side and observing us. Something made me look again. I recognized the woman. Yikes! She was the mother of one of my high school students. She had a front-row seat to the entire scene, watching her own daughter’s teacher whine and complain in a way that she would never accept from her own students.
Horrified, I slunk away. Forget the professor. If that mother gave me an F, I deserved it.
HATS OFF TO YOU
AS TOLD TO HINDY KLEIN
We’re living in a new apartment when the rainfall of the century comes pouring down. In the condo next door, there’s a bit of a flood as water seeps in from under a door that hasn’t been sealed well, and unfortunately, some water travels under the walls and into our own apartment.
Soon a heimish yungerman, who’s employed by the contractor who built the house, is at my door. The rain is still coming down, and over the din of the downpour, we’re trying to figure out how to deal with the mess. The conversation is serious and somewhat agitated, but once there’s a plan of action, I retreat inside.
As I walk past our hallway mirror, I stop short. Floor, please open right up…
There, perched on top of my head, is a birthday hat I completely forgot I was wearing. We’d been celebrating a
double birthday in our family just a few minutes earlier, but the thought of the party had all but fallen out of my head the instant I knew we were in trouble. But the hat, unfortunately, hadn’t fallen off my head at all. It had great staying power, courtesy of a loop of elastic that went all around my head.
MIRROR IMAGE
So there I was, talking about urgent matters through the rainpour like a mature adult. But I was wearing a raincoat, boots, a snood — and a birthday hat, perched on a jaunty angle on my head.
I left the dentist office after my six-month cleaning with a sense of relief. No cavities! Music to my ears (and teeth). I wouldn’t have to go to the dentist for another full six months.
As I pranced home, I met an acquaintance, a very stately and respectable woman a decade older than me. We stopped to chat, and she shared with me news of a simcha in her family. I stood there saying all the right things — Wow! Mazel tov! So beautiful! — but my eyes were riveted to a glob of toothpaste on her lip. I couldn’t think about anything else.
Should I say anything? Surely it would embarrass her… but it would also embarrass her to be seen walking around with toothpaste on her face. But what could I say? “I’m sorry, I feel you may appreciate knowing that you’ve got some toothpaste on your face. Here, I have a tissue to wipe it off.” Eek. I was a coward. I couldn’t do it. “So who’s the grandmother? And who was the shadchan?” I said instead.
Eventually, we finished our schmooze and parted ways. Now, instead of thinking about my free pass at the dentist, I was fixated on whether I had done the right thing by remaining silent. When she eventually looked in the mirror, would she be angry at me for not saying anything?
I got home and went to exchange my sheitel for a snood. As I stood in front of the mirror, I gasped. There, on my face, was a glob of toothpaste.
At least now I knew she wouldn’t be angry at me for not saying anything.

IN A CLICK
BAILA BERGER
I’m lazy this afternoon. I feel like sitting on the couch and forgetting the laundry, the dishes, and even my unmade supper. The kids are happily playing with Magnatiles and mentschies in the playroom, so I take a moment to indulge. I sink into the couch.
Then the phone rings.
It’s my sister Chavy. Company! Suddenly, I’ve got energy to tackle the world. We yap about this and that, anything and everything and nothing important, as a pot of soup begins to bubble on the stove.
There is a light click, but I don’t even hear it. We’re still chatting about trivialities, sister to sister, and our conversation moves faster than the speed of light.
“Um, hello?”
I hear the deep voice of a man clearing his throat. Somehow, the line had switched to an incoming call, and I hadn’t realized. What else did he hear me say? I’m afraid I’d rather not know.
DON’T PUSH IT
AS TOLD TO MALKA DEUTCH
It was after a sleepless night and busy morning that I made my way to the grocery. In a daze, I dropped a few items into my cart, and then I went up and down the aisles as I oriented myself and tried to remember what I needed.
Somewhere along the way, in a supermarket full of Erev Shabbos shoppers, I must have abandoned my shopping cart by mistake, but I was oblivious to the matter until I met my friend. “Hey, Malka!” I turned around. “Gitty! So nice to see you!” I exclaimed. She walked right up to me and looked oddly at my cart. Following her gaze, I looked, too, and then had to pretend it was totally normal and socially acceptable for me to be pushing a cart that had no groceries — but was stuffed with neatly folded egg boxes. Mortified, I bade my friend a courteous good-bye and rolled quickly out of the aisle in search of my own cart.

The color red commands attention. In various industries, a vivid red is the color of choice when the purpose is capturing and holding attention.
When displays of nature appear in bold, bright or even glaring red, they may represent cause for alarm — or simply deliver a landscape that inspires both awe and wonder. This reminds us that the world we live in has been designed by the greatest Designer and created by the One Creator.
THE WAVE , a sandstone rock formation, is located in Arizona, right near its border with Utah. This specific rock formation is pretty complicated to visit since there’s no marked trail leading to it. Instead, hikers must cross a wide expanse of desertland on their own. Additionally, only 64 permits are allocated to visitors daily, which leaves plenty of disappointed tourists without that perfect photo op.
Commonly known as the FLY AGARIC, this mushroom looks almost like a figment of an illustrator’s imagination. Turns out that the Artist of all artists designed this mushroom, and while it looks friendly, its red color is a warning to all curious explorers. Fly agarics are in fact poisonous, and their toxins are known to cause hallucinations.
This volcano in Iceland, known as MOUNT FAGRADALSFJALL , is actively erupting in this photo. See the red lava, spreading red-hot danger along with a hefty dose of alarm.
Did you know that the warm pigments we associate with FALL are present all through the spring and summer? Leaves are generally green because their chlorophyll masks their inherent pigmentation, but once the chlorophyll decreases and the fresh green color fades away, the leaves’ true pigmentation is revealed.

KOYASHSKOYE is a pink salt lake in Kerch, Russia, that appears red under light. High salt content in a lake encourages a specific kind of algae to flourish, turning these bodies of water into spectacular sights.
RED POPPIES are bold flowers that grow especially well in soil that’s been disturbed. During the First World War, corn poppies grew in abundance between the trenches on the Western Front after hand-to-hand combat left fields in ruin. That’s why the poppy widely symbolizes the memory of men who died in combat during the Great War.
BIG RED is the largest of a collection of dunes in the Simpson Desert, which is a red, sandy plain located in central Australia. Oddly, these dunes are static, which means their forms don’t change much with the wind.
Colloquially known as redbirds, CARDINALS can be found fairly easily in our region. One can often catch a flash of these red beauties as they flit from tree to tree, and somehow, the thrill never dies.
This beautiful SUNSET has been captured for posterity in Faro, Portugal. When the sun is farther away, like during sunrise or sunset, the shorter wavelengths of light are broken up and fall away in the greater distance between the sun and earth. These lost bits of light compose the blue portion of the rainbow, leaving only the warmer tones to light the world.
A SHORT WHILE LATER:
JUST SO YOUR LITTLE FRIEND DOESN’T GET ANY IDEAS, I’M LEAVING MY FRIEND HERE IN YOUR HOUSE TO KEEP AN EYE ON HIM. TRY TO RUN, AND YOU’LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS...
SEÑOR SEEMS VERY ANGRY.
WHY WOULDN’T I BE?! I ENDED UP IN PRISON BECAUSE OF THOSE RUSOS. THAT MISHA TRICKED ME! HE TEAMED UP WITH MY FATHER AND OLDER BROTHER!
THIS PEDRO… HIS HEART IS SO BLACK. HE’S ALWAYS ANGRY.
I UNDERSTAND, SEÑOR. I HAVE BROTHERS TOO.
OH, YEAH? DO YOU ALSO HAVE A BROTHER SO SUCCESSFUL THAT ALL YOU’LL EVER BE IS A DISAPPOINTMENT?
MY BROTHER IS VERY SMART. HE CAN LEARN LANGUAGES IN A FLASH. AND HE’S A GENIUS AT MATH.
KNOWING MISHA AND KNOWING PEDRO, I’D SAY HE PROBABLY DESERVED IT…
EXACTLY! AND DOESN’T THAT MAKE YOU FURIOUS?! ALL YOU’RE LEFT WITH IS BEING THE “BAD KID.”
WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, SEÑOR, THESE ARE JUST EXCUSES.
RECAP: PEDRO FINDS NATIVES WHO KNOW ABOUT THE TREASURE. HE THREATENS THEM WITH FORCE SO THEY SHOULD HELP HIM FIND THE TREASURE AHEAD OF THE RUBINOVS.
WHAT?!!! SAY THAT AGAIN.
IT’S EXCUSES, SEÑOR. EXCUSES NOT TO HAVE TO WORK HARD AND DO WHAT YOU NEED TO DO.
YOUR BROTHER IS MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN YOU — SO WHAT? ARE YOU GOING TO LET YOUR BROTHER CONTROL YOUR LIFE? CONTROL YOUR CHOICES?
IF YOU WANT TO BE GOOD, BE GOOD. IF YOU CHOOSE TO DO SOMETHING BAD OR STAY ANGRY, AT LEAST BE STRONG ENOUGH TO ADMIT IT’S BECAUSE YOU FEEL LIKE IT. DON’T BLAME YOUR BROTHER.
WHAT WAS I THINKING?! WHY AM I ARGUING WITH HIM? IF HE KILLS ME, WHO’S GOING TO SAVE TATTY AND MISHA? EVEN IF IT’S THE TRUTH…
I LIKE YOU, KID. COME ON, AMANDO, WE NEED TO HURRY AND SET UP CAMP BEFORE IT GETS DARK.

“There’s” is very commonly used when a plural noun follows, but that doesn’t make it correct. In informal talk, we’re used to hearing sentences like, “There’s so many people in there, but a plural verb is needed. Correct would be: “There are so many people in there.”

First grade was supposed to be so exciting, new and grown up. But all I am is worried all the time about what I should be doing, if I’m doing it right, and what will happen next. My classroom is so pretty and my teacher is so fun, but for me, it’s all just so busy and fast moving. I wish first grade could just be a little slower so I could be more relaxed.
Mommy realized that I was feeling anxious and overwhelmed and she helped me by taking me to OTB. There, I learned to calm, ground, and center myself in the moment while my therapist worked her magic on helping my body feel in control. First grade is just great! I love math best!
