Can you list 5 people who are sensitive to milchigs?
You probably can, because dairy sensitivity is that common.
Did you know dairy sensitivity affects over half of the Jewish population? It’s why our grocery shelves are brimming with oat, almond, and rice milk.
But it’s not just about almond milk in your coffee. When you can’t eat dairy, you miss out on that delicious cheesecake at the milchige kiddush, ice cream from the ice cream truck, and
the easy nutrition of yogurt for breakfast. And milk alternatives can’t match real dairy for protein, calcium, or nutrients.
So what’s a lactose-intolerant person to do?
For F.W., the answer is Meant To Be grass-fed dairy.
“I’m lactose intolerant, so I’m happy that these products agree with me,” she says. Thanks to Meant To Be, she can savor real, delicious dairy.
How does Meant To Be milk work for her?
Three reasons your stomach will thank you:
100% Grass-fed On Pasture
Many people react to the soy and corn that conventional cows are fed, which passes through to their milk. Meant To Be cows graze on pasture, so their milk is friendlier to your stomach.
Low-heat Pasteurization
Most milk is heated too high when it’s pasteurized, killing helpful bacteria and enzymes. Meant To Be milk is gently heated, keeping the natural helpers alive to aid digestion.
A2-only Cows
Meant To Be milk is taken only from cows with A2 genes, without any hard-to-digest A1 genes.
If you’re sensitive to milk, try a stomach-friendly bottle from Meant To Be. Find Meant To Be milk in your local supermarket, or call 845-712-4719 for questions and private orders.

(Re: Pesach Edition, Issue 494)
I just wanted to say thank you for the magnificent Pesach edition. I was thrilled to have so much quality reading material when I finally had the time to relax after such a busy few weeks. I especially appreciated that the articles are uplifting and inspiring, rather than heavy and intense. I finished reading with a feeling of having had a little mental vacation.
Thank you for such a great magazine week after week.
(Re: Pesach Edition, Issue 494)
R. Traube
When I looked at the thick copy of the Pesach magazine, it occurred to me that somewhere in The Monsey View offices were a team of people who were not only cleaning, shopping, cooking and preparing for Pesach — in short, doing everything I was doing — but they were also working hard to produce this extra-special issue. I can’t imagine how much work it entailed, but on behalf of my whole family and readers everywhere, thank you so much for enhancing our Yom Tov!
(Re: Found: Chometz!, Issue 494)
First of all, I have a lot of hakaras hatov for your magazine, which my family really enjoys. I especially appreciate that I can rely on the content to be kosher and appropriate.
However, I was disappointed with your article about finding chometz on Pesach. Finding chometz is not a laughing matter or something to be treated like light entertainment. The issur of chometz on Pesach is very severe, and our meticulous commitment to hilchos Pesach keeps us spiritually alive.
Would you ever print a collection of entertaining stories about people who almost ate poison?

(Re: Found: Chometz!, Issue 494)
The stories about finding chometz at the last minute gave us a good laugh around our Yom Tov seudah. Here’s one that takes the (Pesach’dik) cake: A few years ago, the weather turned very warm on Chol Hamoed Pesach. Our friends
turned on their AC unit for the first time that season… and with that initial blast of cold air, a handful of Cheerios shot across the room.

The mother was devastated, but the kids got a hands-on lesson on the halachic requirements in such a situation.

(Re: Splitting the Sea, Issue 494)
I really appreciate that you printed a few stories about shidduchim. First of all, everyone enjoys a good shidduch story. Second, it’s really important to keep shidduchim in the forefront of everyone’s minds. This time of year, when people get together with family they haven’t seen in a while, or go places they don’t usually visit, is an especially good time to network and try to think of shidduchim. Most shidduchim are made by family and friends, not by “professional” shadchanim. You might be the person in common that both parties know, and the one person who is perfectly placed to bring a new couple together.
I keep an informal list of all the single girls and boys I know, and every so often I review the list to see if any can be a match for another. It’s a simple thing to do, and it doesn’t take a lot of time. I strongly urge others to try this as well. You can designate a specific time, like Rosh Chodesh, to review the list, so that you don’t forget to look it over every now and then.
I’ll be honest. Although I have arranged several shidduchim up to the point of the young couple meeting, I have never yet made a shidduch However, I have always received warm thanks from the parties involved. People who are looking for a shidduch have very few avenues of hishtadlus open to them. They often feel helpless, like there is nothing they can do, no way they can help themselves. It gives them a lot of chizuk and comfort to know that people think of them and make efforts on their behalf.
Hatzlacha to everyone,
A Shadchan at Heart
(Re: Man of the House, Issue 493)
What was the point in printing an article about these men who are so helpful around the house?
My husband doesn’t do anything in terms of Pesach preparation. It’s his busy season at work, and he’s too overwhelmed to help out at all. I know other men who don’t help out around the house either — either because of their job or other responsibilities, or because of their personality or abilities.
Reading about all of these helpful husbands while working hard to do everything alone just makes us resent our unhelpful husbands. Just like we’re sensitive to others and don’t flaunt our good fortune in other areas, especially in front of those who aren’t so blessed, in this area, too, we should keep quiet about our blessings.
No Help at Home
This is a letter of acknowledgement to the couple in Evergreen who stepped up to help me out financially.
I want you to know that you moved me to tears with your spontaneous offer of help. I was overcome with emotion over Hashem’s Divine orchestration of the situation, and how you so eagerly became His messenger to show me that He has not forsaken me.
I did not have the presence of mind at the time to express my appreciation to you as I would have liked. May Hashem bless you so that you and your children should never lack for anything spiritually, emotionally or materially, and may you always have the capacity to give to others. Additionally, may you always feel His presence.
Thank you so much!

Taking challah is our special mitzvah, which is why many women have tons of excuses for avoiding it. Excuses like, “It takes too long,” “It’s too hard,” or “It doesn’t taste like my mother’s,” are voices of the yetzer hara, who makes sure we give up before trying. We should realize what a zechus we have and use it wisely.
Baking challah
l’kavod Shabbos is a tremendous mitzvah and brings forth many amazing yeshuos. I try to bake challah every Friday. After a hard week, out comes the Bosch mixer! All my week’s stress goes into kneading the dough.
I try baking challah every week because I don’t want to miss out on the opportunity of hafrashas challah. While adding in each ingredient, I daven for my family, with a different tefillah for each ingredient. I got these ideas at a hafrashas challah event, but you can daven for whatever you feel like in your own words.
I recently heard a beautiful thing about preparing food for your family. While you mix and pour and stir, take the time to daven that the children who will be eating this food should bring you much nachas and be yirei Shamayim with gezunt and all brachos. Your tefillos literally go into the food and have a tremendous power. I specifically use my challah mixing and braiding time to submit all of my bakashos to the Ribbono Shel Olam. It’s the highlight of my Shabbos preparations, and anyone who could do this definitely should.
Whenever I bake challah, I make one loaf of kokosh cake with part of the dough. (I add lots of sugar to sweeten it.)
We only bake shlissel challah. We make a big batch and put some in the freezer for the next couple of weeks.
When I was newly married, I asked my rav if I should bake three-pound batches more often, or five- to six pound-batches, which would last me longer but give me the opportunity to take challah. My p’sak was that the mitzvah of baking challah l’kavod Shabbos is worth more than the mitzvah of taking challah, so it is preferred that I do smaller amounts more often, even if I don’t get to take challah
I bake challah every week and send some to my parents and grandparents.
I don’t bake challah because my husband prefers bakery challah. This used to give me an inferiority complex, but I’ve come to the point of really being okay with it. Plus, it’s one less thing to do.
I know it would be nice to bake every Erev Shabbos, but it’s just not doable for me. Recently, my son told me that rewarming the challah is like baking it, so we do that, hoping that we are accomplishing great things with our desires and choice of bringing in Shabbos calmly, to the best of our ability.
Being in a hectic stage of my life, my Bosch mixer (and challah baking career) is sitting and collecting dust in a cabinet. My four-year-old came across it while I was Pesach cleaning and innocently asked, “Ma, what’s this machine for?” B’ezras Hashem, one day!
When the challahs are ready to go into the oven, put them in at 190° for 20 minutes, and then move up the temperature to 385°. The results: the fluffiest, most lightweight challahs.
If baking in the middle of the week, bake one smaller challah to serve that night at dinner. The kids walk in from school hungry, and the house smells divine — treat them to some fresh, hot challah!
After prepping the dough, immediately remove it from the bowl and put it into a garbage bag so you can wash away all the dishes. Spray (or smear) the inside of the bag with oil so the dough won’t stick. Also, if you’re running late or are too tired to braid the challahs, just put the entire bag into the refrigerator overnight. In the morning, leave it on the counter for 30 minutes to warm up, and then proceed as usual. You won’t taste a difference. Try it!
During the summer, when Shabbos starts late, I make a kids’ meal right after the zman. I make little rolls in muffin pans so they each get a whole challah without needing to cut up a big challah.
I make my dough and shape the challah rolls on Thursday afternoon, and then place them in the refrigerator to rise overnight. On Friday morning, I remove them from the refrigerator, let them come to room temperature for about two hours, glaze them with an egg, and place them in a preheated oven. That’s how I get to bake challahs fresh on Friday, but with all the utensils having been washed and put away the day before.
Be mindful not to allow any metal to come into contact with the yeast while activating. You can achieve this by proofing it in a glass measuring cup and using a silicone spatula.
Cut down the yeast to one or two tablespoons, and let the dough rise longer for a finer, softer dough. You will need to re-knead the dough every 30 to 60 minutes when using this method.
I make the dough and don’t let it rise. Instead, I braid the challah right away and put it in the oven at 170° until it rises, around 45 minutes. Then I set the oven to 350° and bake the challahs until they’re ready. This method allows me to clean up the kitchen right away.
In the summer, when you have the air conditioning on and want the dough to rise quickly, place it in a room that is not air conditioned. Alternatively, cover it well and put it outdoors (e.g., on the porch). It will rise beautifully in the heat and humidity.
I bake twelve pounds of challah at a time. When the challah count in the freezer goes low, I choose a convenient day, usually before the cleaning lady comes, to bake the next twelve pounds.
For those who love sesame seeds, here’s a tip I learned from my grandmother: Sprinkle sesame seeds into the bottom of your greased pans before putting the braided dough in. The challahs will come out deliciously full of sesame seeds.
I bake spelt challah and find the taste more flavorful than challah made of wheat flour. As for the texture, the recipe on the back of the Grain Brain white spelt flour wins, hands down. All spelt challah will leave more crumbs than wheat flour challah, but this challah is like a cloud. I leave the dough in the mixer after kneading, let it sit for five minutes, and turn on the mixer for a minute to punch it down again. I do this two or three times before letting it rise. This creates a very fluffy challah. Also, if it seems like the dough can’t hold any more water, try the punching down trick, and add the rest of the water then.
A tip I learned from my mother-in-law is to let the mixer knead the dough for at least ten minutes. It gives the dough an amazing consistency because the gluten in the flour gets properly activated.
In the winter, I bake challah on Thursdays, and in the summer, when there’s more time, I bake challah on Friday. I bake my challah at 430° for 35 minutes. On Erev Shabbos, I bake it for another five minutes and put it on the hotplate. It comes out very crispy on the outside and very soft on the inside.
I prepare the dough, and then wait until the kids come home from school/yeshiva so they can answer amen to my bracha of hafrashas challah. I also offer them a piece of dough to braid themselves. I want them to see that making challah isn’t stressful, and that I’m glad to bake a batch every week.
I switch some sugar for vanilla sugar in my challah dough. It gives the challah a more cakelike scent and taste, which my family loves. (Beware, however; I’ve had some guests over the years who preferred their challah without the vanilla flavor.)
Since I don’t need a full batch of challah every week, I use part of the dough to make garlic knots. I form the knots and bake them for about 20 minutes. Then I refrigerate them, and on Motzei Shabbos, I smear oil mixed with garlic, parsley and kosher salt on the knots and bake them for another fifteen minutes. This makes the house smell delicious and gets everyone to wash for melaveh malka.
Mix some vanilla sugar into the egg wash. It makes for a beautiful and delicious crust!
I put a wet towel on top of the metal bowl while letting the dough rise. I also spray the top of the dough with cooking spray so it doesn’t stick.
It used to take me very long to braid the ten challahs from each batch until I heard this hack: Instead of rolling each strand separately, roll out the dough, and cut through with a knife almost until the end to create connected strands.
My best-kept secrets: Add a pinch of baking soda to your challah dough for unreal fluffiness. It doesn’t alter the taste at all. Also, try egging your challah twice, once right after braiding and once right before baking.
When sifting the flour, do so into a garbage bag, and then let the dough rise in this floury bag.
Using metal baking pans for my challahs has transformed their texture and taste a hundredfold. If you’re still using disposable, do yourself a favor and buy these metal pans today. Thank me later.
Using spelt flour for your challah is a delicate process, as it becomes dry with too much handling. Here’s a method that I’ve found works best: Do not let the dough rise, and do not preheat the oven. Instead, add one ingredient at a time to the mixing bowl while mixing continuously. Once everything is well combined, immediately braid the loaves. Place the challah directly into the cold oven, then turn the oven on to 350° and bake until done. This will result in soft and fluffy challah.
Instead of 5 cups warm water, use 2½ cups warm water and 2½ cups seltzer. I use flavored seltzer (Mayim Chayim lemon-lime, but any will do the trick).
A tip for pretty bumps on your challah is to braid loosely and only five or six times per challah.
A braiding tip I use is to lift and cross two strands at a time (instead of doing each one separately). I also cut off the two not-soperfect ends and hide them under the loaf to give it a nice lift. My challahs come out beautiful this way.
Use a kitchen scale to measure each piece of dough before braiding to get uniform-sized challahs.
When you make challah, make two batches, one after another, to save time. After you finish the first batch, fill up the bowl with water, rinse, and start the next batch.
The first thing I do when baking challah is spread a plastic tablecloth on the counter, allowing it to cover my drawers and cabinets, too. I leave it there until after taking the challahs out of their pans, because that also makes a mess.

In this week’s parsha, the Torah enumerates the halachos of maachalos assuros, forbidden foods, and lists which animals are not kosher and may not be eaten. We are commanded not to defile ourselves with such impurities. The Torah concludes, “ V’hiskadishtem v’hiyisem kedoshim — And you shall sanctify yourselves and be holy” ( Vayikra 11:44).
The pasuk seems repetitive — “sanctify yourselves and be holy.” Why the repetition?
THERE’S A STORY brought down in the Gemara (Pesachim 104a) of Rabbi Menachem Bar Simai who was known by the name “Benan shel Kedoshim” because he never looked at the form of a coin. This was not because Rabbi Menachem wasn’t involved in business or didn’t ever need to handle money, but rather because there was the shape of a cross minted on the coin. Even though halachically there was no issue with using such coins, since they aren’t actually avodah zarah, Rabbi Menachem was machmir and would not even look at such coins.
Chazal say that on the day Rabbi Menachem Bar Simai was niftar, a miracle happened, and all coins melted like wax in the sun. The kedushah of this holy tzaddik became known to all. Even the non-Jews who saw their melted coins recognized his holiness and the omnipotence of the Ribbono Shel Olam.

In his old age, the Chofetz Chaim once traveled on a long journey. It was an exhausting trip, and from time to time, the Chofetz Chaim’s head drooped downward as he nodded off. The wagon reached a city that was heavily populated by religious
non-Jews. At every street corner, they hung their avodah zarah
The person accompanying the Chofetz Chaim thought to himself that if anybody saw the gadol sitting in his seat in the open-roofed vehicle, they might notice his head tilting downward. This could chas v’shalom look as if he were bowing to their cross. The man considered covering the Chofetz Chaim’s head with a blanket so nobody would see him. But, amazingly, no action was necessary. Every time the wagon approached a junction, the Chofetz Chaim’s head would immediately jerk upward. Even mid-sleep, the gadol held his head upright!

Reb Baruch* was in the final stages of releasing a sefer he had written. In the process, he visited the local printing house in Yerushalayim several times. He got to know the workers there, including one simple Russian man who knew little about Yiddishkeit. Reb Baruch couldn’t help but notice that the Russian Jew wore a chain with a cross prominently around his neck. Sadly, he was so far removed from Yiddishkeit that he didn’t seem to realize there was anything wrong with doing so.
One day, Reb Baruch came to the shop and saw the Russian worker. He immediately noticed that the necklace was missing. Curiously, he asked about it.
The man answered, “As a technician for printers and copy machines, I was called to the home of Harav Ovadia Yosef to fix a broken printer. As I entered the house, I thought to myself that perhaps it isn’t respectful for me to wear my cross in the rabbi’s presence. So I turned the necklace to my back.
“The rabbi was in the middle of learning, and I was told not to begin working since the noise could disturb him. I waited until the rabbi closed his sefer and stood up to go daven [Mincha] so I could start the job.
Every time the wagon approached a junction, the Chofetz Chaim’s head would immediately jerk upward. Even mid-sleep, the gadol held his head upright!
A while later, the rebbetzin noticed that the cake was still on the table, untouched
“As the rabbi walked past me, he stared into my face and said, ‘It is forbidden for a Jew to wear what you’re wearing.’
“I promise,” the Russian said, “that the rabbi did not see me before I entered his house. He did not see my cross. I realized that he could sense the impurity of the necklace even without seeing it, and I decided I must throw it out.”
In his great kedusha, Rav Ovadia could sense the tumah of the cross even without seeing it!

Rav Ovadia Yosef was sitting and learning when his wife brought him a plate with a slice of cake. A while later, the rebbetzin noticed that the cake was still on the table, untouched.
“Taste it,” the rebbetzin urged. “It’s fresh from the oven.”
Rav Ovadia lifted his eyes and asked, “Who baked it?”
The rebbetzin mentioned the name of a particular relative who had come to visit. “But it was baked in our kitchen, in our oven.”
Rav Ovadia wasn’t satisfied. “You know that, unfortunately, she isn’t shomer Shabbos,” he said. “There are poskim who hold that a mechallel Shabbos has the din of a non-Jew. If so, something he cooks or bakes is considered bishul akum and may not be eaten.”
It was not visible to the eye, yet the food’s questionable status was perceived by the great gadol.

5 Million Meals. 5 Million Moments of Relief. One Promise That Still Brings Miracles.
It’s been 100 years since the histalkus of Reb Shayale of Kerestir zt”l, one of the most beloved tzaddikim of recent generations. A century has passed since his warm, welcoming home in Kerestir stood as a beacon of hope for the poor, the hungry, and the brokenhearted.
And yet, his chesed is still alive. His presence is still felt. His legacy continues to feed thousands of hungry children every single day.
This is the story of how a tzaddik’s final wish has become the greatest force of chesed in our time, and how you can become a part of it.
Anyone who’s ever heard the name “Reb Shayale” knows his greatness wasn’t only in his kedusha or ruach hakodesh—it was in his limitless devotion to Klal Yisroel.
He didn’t just perform chesed He lived it.
Day and night, his doors remained open. No Jew ever left hungry. His home was a haven, his table was full, and his compassion never ran dry.
Reb Shayale fed the bodies of the hungry and lifted the spirits of the downtrodden. And in doing so, he became not just a man of miracles, but a father to the people.
“Carry
In his final moments, Reb Shayale shared a heartfelt request with his descendants:
“As long as you continue my chesed, I will continue to bring yeshuos for Klal Yisroel.”
His grandchildren took that promise to heart—and built some-
thing extraordinary.
They established Rav Lehoshia: an organization founded for one purpose only, to fulfill Reb Shayale’s will by feeding the children of Klal Yisroel. Not just any children, but the most vulnerable ones among us who cannot even complain about their hunger. They can’t yet ask for food; all they can do is cry.
These unfortunate children rely on Rav Lehoshia for the costly baby formula that their parents cannot afford, as it is their essential food without which they would otherwise go hungry.
To this day, every container of formula, every meal, every bite of food is an extension of Reb Shayale’s holy hands, reaching out from Kerestir to the hungry of today.
Every month, Rav Lehoshia distributes 3 cans of baby formula per child to struggling families across Eretz Yisroel. That’s not just formula—it’s a full pantry for a baby. Breakfast, lunch, supper, Shabbos, Yom Tov, weekday, Pesach—it’s all there.
Here’s what Klal Yisroel helped accomplish just this past year:
3,019 children were fed every single day.
108,684 cans of formula were distributed.
Each can provides 46 feedings, on average.
That means 14,123 times a day, a child was fed through your compassion.
4,999,464 times in one year, hunger was replaced with nourishment, warmth, and hope.
And to date:
26,988,384 meals have already been served through Rav Lehoshia.
That’s 26 million times a Jewish child in Eretz Yisroel was able to eat because someone like you chose to help.
Now, for the 100th Yahrtzeit—A Goal Worthy of the Tzaddik
In honor of the 100th yahrtzeit of Reb Shayale, his grandchildren and supporters have set out to achieve their most ambitious goal yet: to provide 5 million meals to feed thousands of children in the coming year.
Not just to remember Reb Shayale, but to live his legacy.
Imagine it: 5 million meals. 5 million sighs of relief. 5 million expressions of gratitude.
5 million moments of dignity for a Jewish child, and 5 million zechusim lifted before the kisei hakavod in your name.
A Century Later – More Chesed. More Yeshuos.
This year, as Reb Shayale’s chesed reaches more children than ever before, the promise he made echoes louder, and the yeshuos are pouring in on tidal waves. Because when a tzaddik’s love feeds thousands of hungry children, the gates of Heaven cannot stay closed. His final wish was clear: “Continue my chesed—and I will continue to carry Klal Yisroel.” And this year, we are seeing that promise come alive like never before.
To honor that promise, Rav Lehoshia is once again distributing the sacred kemiyah handed down from Reb Shayale, renowned for
being a segulah for yeshuos and rachamim. It will be gifted to anyone who donates $100/month.
Additionally, this year’s campaign includes, for the second time, a raffle for an apartment in Kerestir, located on the main road leading up to Reb Shayale’s tzion. Every supporter who contributes at least $391 (the gematria of “yeshuah”) will be entered into the raffle. Monthly donors of $100 will be entered five times.
Last year, the winner of the first-ever Kerestir apartment raffle was Harav Elazar Chanun shlit”a of Yerushalayim, the gabbai of the Shomrei Emunim Rebbe shlit”a
“The Spoon of Yeshuos”
This year, Rav Lehoshia introduces a one-of-a-kind opportunity: Reb Shayale’s actual silver spoon— the very one he used to serve food and perform his chesed—has been melted down to create a limited number of spoons, which are now being gifted to select donors.
Why this spoon? Because the miracles it brought are legendary. One Motzei Shabbos, a group of Jewish soldiers arrived late for Melave Malka. The kitchen staff told Reb Shayale there wasn’t enough borscht left. But the tzaddik raised his spoon and said, “What do you mean there’s not enough? We mix
and serve, mix and serve!” And miraculously, he took his holy spoon and stirred the last drops in the pot and served borscht and potatoes until every last soldier was satisfied. Now, a limited number of these holy spoons—forged from the original—are being given to donors who contribute $7,200 or more, to bring the power of Reb Shayale’s brachos into their own homes. Once they run out, no more will be made.
The name “Rav Lehoshia” isn’t just symbolic—it’s a lived reality. Hundreds of donors have reached out with incredible stories of yeshuos
Shidduchim Parnassah. Health. Children. Turnarounds that defy logic—in the exact same way that Reb Shayale’s miracles once did. Because when you feed a child through Rav Lehoshia, you’re not just giving food, you’re plugging directly into the brachos of a tzaddik who made a promise—and continues to keep it.
Join the thousands who are calling the Rav Lehoshia office at 718-682-5056 to take part in this historic campaign—the zechus of providing 5 million meals to hungry children.
When you call, you can also submit your personal requests, and representatives of Rav Lehoshia will bring your kvittel to the holy tzion of Reb Shayale on the day of the yahrtzeit
It’s more than a donation. It’s a partnership in chesed, a connection to a tzaddik, and a moment to ask for the yeshuos your heart desires.
Together, let’s feed 5 million children. Together, let’s make Reb Shayale proud. Together, let’s change the world— one meal, one child, one miracle at a time.
REAL ID is about to get real, with domestic fliers required to have federallyapproved documentation in order to clear airport security as of May 7.
Regular state-issued driver’s licenses will only be accepted for domestic travel if they have a star or a flag in their upper right hand corner, indicating that they meet the federal government’s minimumsecurity standards. Motorists have the option of upgrading their standard driver’s licenses at their local Department of Motor Vehicles office, or they can use a federal document such as a passport as identification to board a flight.
“REAL ID is a coordinated effort by the federal government to improve the reliability and accuracy of driver licenses and identification cards,” said John Essig, federal security director at New York City area airports for the Transportation Security Administration. “The improvements are intended to inhibit terrorists’ ability to evade detection by using fraudulent identification.”
Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005 in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks, with its official rollout originally scheduled for 2008. Its implementation has been slow, with an initial group of approximately a dozen states becoming compliant in 2012, and a final April 2020 deadline further postponed by the pandemic.
Visitors to the Bronx Zoo over the last few years may be entitled to part of a settlement being paid out to guests who were hit with an additional charge while purchasing their tickets online.
A fifteen-page lawsuit filed against the Wildlife Conservation Society, which owns multiple zoos in the New York City area, said that individuals purchasing non-member admission tickets were not initially shown the full purchase price as required by New York State law. Instead, an additional two-dollar fee was applied to every ticket purchased from August 28, 2022, through January 16, 2024, on the final checkout page.
“This cheap trick has enabled [WCS] to swindle substantial sums of money from its customers,” noted the lawsuit.
Eligible zoo visitors can file a claim to receive their share of the $990,000 settlement fund online at www.bronxzooticket-
feesettlement.com. All claims must be received by July 21, with settlement amounts prorated based on total processing fees paid by each member of the class action lawsuit.
Attorney General Letitia James is facing her turn in the hot seat, with the Federal Housing Finance Agency alleging that she falsified records to obtain home loans for a Virginia property in 2023.
James was serving as a New York state prosecutor, a position that required her to maintain a primary residence in the Empire State, when she filed a mortgage application for a property purchase in Norfolk, Virginia. Those papers allegedly announced James’ intention to establish her primary residence in Virginia, making her eligible for lower interest rates and better loan terms, reported the New York Post
Ironically, James filed her mortgage application just weeks before she launched a civil fraud trial against the Trump Organization for inflating property values on many of its assets. Announcing the lawsuit, James declared, “No one is above the law, not even the president.” She repeated that phrase often throughout the Trump case, which ended in a $454 million judgement against the Trump Organization.
A letter from the Federal Housing Finance Agency to the Department of Justice alleged that James had displayed a pattern of making misleading statements on her mortgage applications, describing a five-family building in Brooklyn as a four-unit dwelling on multiple applications in 2021, and listing property purchased jointly with her father in 1983 and 2000 as being made by “husband and wife.”
George Washington University law professor and Post columnist Jonathan Turley categorized James’ statements as misleading, and noted that she could be facing criminal allegations similar to those she brought against the president.
“This is a person who prosecuted Trump for everything short of ripping a label off a mattress, and among the charges that were brought in New York, in [not] just the civil but the criminal case, was making false or misleading statements to financial institutions,” said Turley.
“If we apply the Letitia James standard she created, there’d be little question here,” added Turley. “This seems pretty straightforward.”
A statement released by James’ office professed her innocence, saying, “Attorney General James is focused every single day on protecting New Yorkers, especially as this Administration weaponizes the federal government against the rule of law and the Constitution. She will not be intimidated by bullies — no matter who they are.”
Despite the recent spate of cool weather, summer is just weeks away, and New York State’s Home Energy Assistance Program, known as HEAP, has begun accepting applications for its free air-conditioner giveaway.
Overseen by the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, the program will pay for air conditioners for eligible households with children under the age of six, adults over the age of sixty, or members with documented medical conditions that can be worsened by extreme heat.
The program’s application process began on April 15, and its income criteria varies by household size. Its cooling assistance includes the cost of an air conditioner as well as its installation, and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
“High temperatures and humidity in the summer pose a grave threat to those with certain medical conditions, as well as older adults and young children,” said Governor Kathy Hochul. “This assistance is crucial for at-risk New Yorkers, and I encourage those who may be eligible to apply as soon as possible so they can stay cool in their home when the worst of the weather hits.”
Over 87,000 households have received cooling assistance over the past five years, at a cost of more than $67 million.
Residents outside of New York City may apply by contacting their local department of social services by phone or in
person. New York City residents may apply in person at a local Human Resources Administration Benefit Access Center or online at access.nyc.gov.
Despite the soggy weather that was prevalent at the start of Pesach, Rockland’s burn ban remains in effect through at least mid-May.
Unusually dry weather in recent months has created extremely dry conditions in the county, prompting the warning that prohibits all open burning, the leading cause of wildfires in New York State.
Fast-moving brush fires devastated parts of Long Island in early March.
Fires can be reported to New York State rangers by calling 1-833-NYS-RANGERS (1-833-697-7264).
Two years of renovations at White Lake’s Sullivan County Airport are expected to be finished soon, transforming the property into a state-of-the-art international gateway.
Built in 1969, the airport’s outdated terminal has been replaced by a 15,000 square foot energy-efficient facility as part of an $18.5 million project that began in March 2023. Sullivan County Airport was one of nine airports transformed by Governor Kathy Hochul’s $230 million upstate airport economic development and revitalization competition, which is intended to drive local economies by promoting both tourism and business development.
The airport also serves as the home base for Hatzolah Air. Additionally, its new terminals will feature conference rooms and office space for aviation-related businesses including car rentals.
Kaily decides to move upstairs with her mother and rent out her apartment to earn money.
hearing about her move. She hadn’t told Chaim or Sruly either. She’d barely told herself
chapter
TWENTY-SIX
The move was anticlimactic. It was as simple as telling Mrs. Gordon that, yes, she could have the apartment as of December 1. Mrs. Gordon handed over a security deposit of one month’s rent plus December’s rent.
Aufruf catering, covered.
Gedalya was not impressed. “Ma! Remember Moishy Freulich?”
“Sure!” Moishy had been in his dirah in Eretz Yisroel. “He had his first baby, a girl, today. The kiddush is in Monsey. And, besides, you haven’t seen my Faigy in ages! She cut a tooth, did you know that? Can we come for Shabbos?”
Hmm… she had to be out of her apartment by Sunday. The painters were coming on Monday. The apartment looked like a cardboard thunderstorm, because after taking stock of her possessions, she’d realized there was no choice but to put as many things as possible in storage. Now she was busy deciding what should go where. Should she keep the Duplo for the einiklach or pack it away?
“Hmm… I’m not sure. Lemme ask Babi if you can sleep upstairs.”
“Whats’a matter?”
“Well, the extra room is full of boxes…” Kaily said slowly, fully aware that this was the first her son was
She opened the hall closet, and a familiar choking feeling engulfed her.
“I’m moving, Gedalya. Babi needs me upstairs.”
“Because of Babi ? Why would she care if you keep your stuff downstairs? And why are you packing things up? And why didn’t you tell us?”
She had no choice but to tell him.
“Because of money?” he asked incredulously. “You’re moving because you need money for the chasunah? You know we would gladly help!” She could tell he was angry.
“I didn’t want to make a matzav. And I didn’t want Sruly to know and feel bad.”
“No! You didn’t trust us with this. You were afraid we would actually help you.”
“I didn’t want to burden you,” she said.
“He’s our brother. And, besides… um… maybe my father would help.”
“Right!” she said bitterly.
“Did you ever ask?” he asked gently.
“There was no one to ask.”
“That’s not true. You know he has some yerusha. He might not have the seichel to offer, but if we ask him…” his voice trailed off. “Anyway, I guess I’ll stay in Lakewood for Shabbos. I understand you can’t host us.”

The words looked like flying birds on a paper. Parkinson’s was a thief with no conscience. Slowly, stealthily, cruelly, it stole treasured bits of herself.
AS OF SUNDAY, KAILY WOULD OFFICIALLY BE LIVING UPSTAIRS, SO SHE HAD TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE TIME KAILY WAS SAFELY PACKING DOWNSTAIRS
Roiza tried reading what she had written on the page. She could barely read the number sixty next to Mordechai Newman’s name.
She couldn’t even blame her cataracts anymore.
But she wouldn’t wallow now. She had frighteningly minimal time when Kaily wasn’t hovering or breathing very close by. As of Sunday, Kaily would officially be living upstairs, so she had to make the most of the time Kaily was safely packing downstairs.
It was time to call in the general. Someone capable enough to get this shidduch off ground.
Roiza’s ground troops had done a swell job. Yiddy met Mr. Newman and found out which shul he davened in, where he worked and a million other random details, such as that he still watered his late wife’s plants every day.
Eli did his own share of sleuthing. His chavrusa’s brother lived in Staten Island and knew Newman. He apparently had two married daughters and one married son.
Kaily would finally have daughters. But she was getting ahead of herself.
All these flying birds on her paper wouldn’t get this shidduch moving. A good shadchan would.
Mira would know just whom to call. It was time to update her about this shidduch. Since they’d spoken about finding Kaily a shidduch, Mira kept calling to find out how she could help.
“Hi, Mira,” Roiza began when Mira picked up. “I know you’re getting married in a bit more than a week, but can you help me?”
As soon as she heard what Roiza wanted, Mira jumped in. “I have just the woman! Fruma. Esther. Jaraslowitz. That’s who you need!” She said each part of the name as if it were a standalone sentence.
Roiza held her pen, poised to
take the number. Stop shaking! she commanded her hand. She gripped the pen tightly and wrote down her phone number. Fruma Esther Jaraslowitz. The birds on the paper took flight.
“Do you think I was ready to get married? You know what kind of matzav my Kobi is in now?” Mira continued sadly. “But there’s no saying no to Fruma Esther Jaraslowitz.”
She heard Kaily thumping up the steps with more boxes.
“I’ll call her,” Mira continued. “Maybe she can meet Kaily at my wedding.”
“Maybe!” Roiza whispered. “Bye.” She closed her notebook and hid it under the call list. It was time to call the next boring number on the list to offer Solar King’s services. She often felt like the children in the time of the Yevanim, playing dreidel.
“Who were you talking to?” Kaily asked, huffing and puffing under a pile of boxes.
“Just a business call,” she answered.

The faint smell of soy franks and potatoes in greasy red sauce hit Perela as soon as she entered the school auditorium. Ahh! The smell of her youth. Every Monday, without fail, the school had served the same lunch. Now her own daughter was a student, but apparently, some things never changed.
“Doesn’t this smell like home?” she joked to Kaily.
Kaily chuckled tightly. Well, if she was so unhappy about moving upstairs, why had she done it?
Perela supported Roiza from one side while Kaily held the folded walker. The auditorium was quickly filling up, but Perela could bet that no one there felt like she did.
As she’d styled Sheva’s hair in the

middle of the morning chaos and put a chocolate with a good-luck note in her briefcase, she couldn’t help imagining what Sheva’s hair would have looked like if Ezriel had styled it. As hard as it was for her to admit it, Ezriel had been right. It would have been wrong to miss this.
She scanned the rows of chairs.
PERELA SMILED CALMLY, DESPITE HER RACING HEART, AND SILENTLY GAVE HER A THUMBS-UP. SHE WAS CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE STAGE FOR SHEVA TO SEE HER LIPS
“I think we should go all the way up front,” Perela whispered to Kaily.
Kaily nodded, and they headed to the front row aisle seat where they had enough room to store the walker, and her mother had extra legroom in case she started tremoring.
“I’m so nervous for Sheva!” Perela told her mother. Her stomach was in knots, almost as if she were the one performing. “She’s starting the play with her dance.”
“You started your class play once too,” her mother said fondly. “Remember your sixth grade solo?”
“Sure. In this very auditorium.” Perela chuckled. “Same smell. Same broken chairs.”
An eighth grader sat down in the aisle next to them holding a large flashlight. Hello, spots! Perela couldn’t help thinking. Nothing had changed since her days.
After waiting far past the eleven o’clock sharp on all the invitations, the principal got up to speak. She explained the theme of mesiras nefesh, and how Yiddishe mammes had saved their generation so many times.
The music started and crackled over the speakers. Perela spied another eighth grader off to the side, holding an mp3 player with a mic to amplify the sound.
But none of this mattered. As the mic screeched to a crescendo, Sheva gracefully pirouetted out of the wings. She looked positively glamorous. Her hair was done in a low bun and covered with a glittery net. She was dressed as Chana giving up her seven sons.
Perela’s heart swelled. Sheva looked so gorgeous and graceful as she glided across the stage. Her mother squeezed her hand lightly as they followed every one of
Sheva’s movements.
When she got to the center of the stage, Sheva paused, waiting for music to start again.
As if in slow motion, Perela watched her daughter’s eyes open in fear as she took in the audience. Sheva went completely still, and her entire body seemed to turn to jelly.
The music finally swelled. But the girl in the center of the stage, her face glittery with makeup yet so pale underneath, didn’t move.
Perela heard the audience shift in their seats. She felt Kaily’s eyes bore into her head. She saw Mrs. Pilchik gesturing frantically toward her daughter. But nothing. The girl looked like a statue.
Mrs. Pilchik waved to the girl with the mp3 player to stop the music. The music stopped.
The mic screeched.
Perela froze, too. But she was Sheva’s mother
Finally, Sheva’s eyes met hers. Perela smiled calmly, despite her racing heart, and silently gave her a thumbsup. She was close enough to the stage for Sheva to see her lips. She mouthed, You can do it!
Something in her daughter’s eyes shifted. She watched Sheva straighten, pick up her hands and start moving. The music started up again, and Sheva, at first shakily, then gaining confidence, started her well- rehearsed dance in fluid motions.
The audience exhaled.
Perela exhaled, too. Then she leaned back and listened to the lyrics describing the power of a mother.

The call that would change the course of Mrs. Chaya Rochel Weiss’s life came at the height of the COVID epidemic.
Mrs. Weiss lives in Kiryas Tosh, Quebec, and the authorities had clamped down hard on the Jewish community. Draconian social distancing rules and curfews were being zealously enforced. The Canadian authorities regularly patrolled the formerly bustling streets of Kiryas Tosh, hunting assiduously for any offenders.
Mrs. Weiss ran a custom cake business at the time, supplying caterers and baalei simcha with her beautiful creations. But COVID put a damper on simchas, with the government enforcing a 6 p.m. curfew. Then came the call: Would she be interested in baking for a group tour at a luxury resort in an exotic location?
“It was a no-brainer,” recalls Mrs. Weiss. “The offer came at just the right time, combining the two things I love to do most: baking and traveling. I took along my sister and niece to help me, and that’s how I got started.”
Since then, Mrs. Weiss has traveled all over the world, from tropical islands to cities with rich Jewish histories, as the in-house baker.
For travelers and vacationers on tour, these trips seem to be well-oiled operations, with mountains of delicious food seeming to appear out of nowhere, prepared by unseen hands. The operators ensure that everything goes off smoothly, but an enormous amount of meticulous preparation and logistics goes into planning each of these trips.
The quantities of food that Mrs. Weiss produces are not for the fainthearted: hundreds of rugelach, desserts for 200 people, and at one Shabbos event, over 600 challahs!
Let’s hear more about how it all goes down.
A passion turns into a business when…
I’ve always loved to bake, and I’ve always enjoyed the kitchen, in general. I’m lucky that my mother let us patchke when my siblings and I were young; it’s so important. If your children enjoy puttering around in the kitchen, and you give them the space to enjoy it, then they can really develop their talents. I always tell mothers that letting their children play around in the kitchen is so much more important than a clean kitchen.
Over time, I took a number of courses to develop my talents professionally. I’ve taken classes by Efrat Libfroind, and I also attended a culinary school in Montreal — where, of course, I wasn’t able to taste anything. But really, it’s all siyata d’Shmaya. I wasn’t looking for this career, but Hashem knows what I love, and He sent this career to me.
Running such a large operation entails…
It helps that I love what I do. I really do love baking and making people smile. I also make sure to ask for as much help as I think I’ll need, in advance.
Really, I think the only way you can pull off such large undertakings is if you have a positive approach to life. I’ve had people coming over to me at events to tell me that they could taste my simchas hachaim in my cakes!
In this line, you need to have a flexible attitude, and you need to be able to pivot at the last minute when things don’t go according to plan — which inevitably will happen. For example, at one event, I was going to start my day’s baking with kokosh cake, but there was no yeast available. I had to improvise and start baking other things.
In general, if you maintain a positive attitude and aren’t too rigid, then it’s all smooth sailing.
At one event, which was held in Portugal, the kitchen was in a different location than the hotel, and all of the baked goods had to be transported by car. Well, the car wasn’t loaded very well, and during transport, all the cakes fell. We had to go back to the kitchen and start all over again.
There in Portugal, we enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the local Chabad shluchim. They helped us out enormously, hosting us for Shabbos before the main group came, and providing us with a wonderful, heimish atmosphere. We were happy to gift them with all of our leftover cake, which worked out great for them, because they were hosting a bas mitzvah.
On another memorable occasion, I forgot to pack some essential clothing. That would have been a real disaster, but baruch Hashem, one of the singers was traveling from Montreal. I quickly called my children to pack up what I needed and bring it from Kiryas Tosh to Montreal. Thankfully, I was reunited with my clothes when the rest of the attendees arrived.
I returned from Panama at the height of the COVID epidemic. Traveling was a nightmare then, and I needed to have constantly updated COVID tests.
There were no direct flights from Panama to Montreal, so I flew to JFK, hoping to catch a connecting flight. At the gate, the clerk told me that I couldn’t get on the plane because my COVID test was more than 48 hours old and had expired. He directed me to an office on another floor where I could get a COVID test. When I got there, I found it deserted. After searching the place, I finally found a clerk who told me that they only opened at 9:00 a.m., three hours later.
First I started to panic, but then I started davening. I said, Hashem, You’re bigger than any COVID regulations or enforcers. Please, help me get home to my family!
Then I went back to the gate and gave the clerk the same COVID test I had handed over previously. Unbelievably, he took it from me without a word, and I got onto my plane without any further issues.
“It’s so nice to explore new places,” Mrs. Weiss says. “I always make sure to finish my work on time so I can join all the tours. Morocco, in particular, was one of the most interesting places I ever visited.”
The locals were welcoming and friendly, continuing a long tradition where Jews were welcomed and treated with respect throughout Morocco’s history.
“I had a particular advantage,” she says. “Since I’m from Quebec, where we are required to learn French, I was able to communicate easily with the locals.” (Morocco was a French protectorate in colonial times, and locals still speak French.)
Morocco is a fascinating country, awash in color, sound and exotic smells. Jews have lived for over a thousand years in Morocco, for the most part coexisting peacefully with the local Arabs. There are many tzaddikim buried in Morocco, and it is one of the only Arab countries that still hosts a sizable Jewish community, especially in the cities of Casablanca, Marrakesh and Fez.
On another trip, which took us to Panama, there weren’t proper provisions for a parve kitchen. I had to make do with a makeshift kitchen set up in the hallway. My husband said it was like when a hospital’s emergency room has an overflow of cases, and they end up putting stretchers in the hallway. It was very disorganized, which led to some regrettable errors; a cheesecake was accidentally put into the fleishig oven, which meant no cheesecake and an oven that had to be dealt with.
We usually arrive about three to four days before the main group. That time is spent baking up a storm as we prepare all the cakes, pastries and desserts that will be served throughout the tour. The tea room must always be well stocked, and there must be a dessert at each meal — breakfast, lunch and dinner. And, of course, there’s always cake for noshing between meals.
I make sure to pace my work so that I can enjoy the trip and get some touring in, and take full advantage of the local sights and sounds.
Are mapped out months in advance. A few months before every trip, I have to make the calculations for the quantities of ingredients I’ll need. I have to figure out how many dozens of eggs I’m going to need and how many cheesecakes I’m going to bake. Everything has to be meticulously planned, because every single ingredient gets shipped in. Since we can’t rely on the standards of kashrus in these far-flung places,
we can’t source any ingredients locally.
On one trip to Costa Rica, we were so far inland that every single thing that was needed for the trip had to be brought in in advance. It was almost like going to a desert island. To give you an idea of how remote it was, there wasn’t even any Chabad house for hundreds of miles.
It’s hard to choose when every place has something else to offer. I loved Morocco because of its rich history, but others stand out for their sheer beauty. One particular trip was to a spectacular location in the Dominican Republic. The hotel was right over the ocean, and there was something so breathtaking about the pristine white sands and the glittering ocean.
Oy, don’t ask. At one event in Portugal, we really didn’t understand each other. It was actually a little like dor haflagah; I would ask for eggs, and they would bring me sugar. I’ve since learned to review and write down some essential words I’ll need to know in order to maintain an efficient work environment.
Most of my recipes are simple, basic recipes that have withstood the test of time. Some are from der alte heim, and some are recipes I’ve tinkered with over the years until the results were satisfactory. But I’m always open to new ideas, and I collect inspiration wherever I go. I share recipes easily; I’m not one of those people who zealously guards my trade secrets. My parnassah is from Hashem, and I know I won’t lose out by sharing recipes with others.
I’m known for baking cakes that are both delicious and elaborately decorated (not a simple feat; most cakes are either/or). But the cake I get the most requests for is the good ol’ chocolate babka. My babkas have been around for so long, some people actually call me the Babka Lady.
Mrs. Weiss ships babkas all over the world — and not only to far-flung locations. You can order your own babka at 514-880-8386.
Whether it’s in an exotic location or in your own kitchen, delicious baked goods are a great way to put a smile on anyone’s face. But there’s extra pleasure in serving the people you love the homemade food they love.
This is the perfect cake for that first Shabbos after Pesach. That’s when everyone is craving some simple, old-fashioned chometz, but you don’t have the time to patchke with fancy recipes. This recipe yields a full cookie sheet, so you’ll have lots of cake for those perpetually hungry bochurim during the last days of bein hazmanim!

Money. What a loaded word. It has the power to place a roof over our heads and food in our mouths. It marries off our kids, covers the tuition of our children’s Torah education, and drives us to the places we need to be. It pays for our esrog, our matzos and so many other mitzvos.
So, no, a comfortable income is not a luxury in frum society. Balancing the books of a Yiddishe home demands a steady flow of cash.
This need is not new. Ever since that very first day of the world’s existence, when Adam Harishon was cursed with the burden of bringing in the bread, parnassah consumes a seemingly disproportionate concern in our daily lives.
But when the pocket is empty or there is simply not enough to get us to the end of the month, as believing Yidden, we’ve got what to fall back on.
T. GESTETNER
In honor of this week’s shlissel challah, let’s take a closer look at segulos for parnassah
DAVENING IS AN INTEGRAL STEP to bringing in the bounty. The Midrash Pinchas says that it’s a segulah for parnassah to daven for one’s livelihood.
Chaim* was out of a job and growing desperate. Weeks turned to months and he was still struggling, while his growing family desperately awaited salvation. “No money, not funny,” they said.
Chaim tried following every lead he could find, but nothing seemed to work out.
One day, he decided to go to the tzion of the Ribnitzer Rebbe, zy”a, and say the entire Sefer Tehillim. Toward the end, as he said the words of Ashrei (Tehillim 145), he had an “aha” moment.
“Posei’ach es yadecha… — Hashem, I’m opening my hands; all I ask is that You pour livelihood inside! I’ve done my hishtadlus; I’ve tried my best. The rest is up to You.”
Incidentally, the Ben Ish Chai says that having kavanah while reciting this pasuk is a segulah for parnassah. That very week, Chaim received the job offer he was waiting for.
Even when it seems that our parnassah is in our hands, let us not forget to turn to the One in whose Hands our bread lies.
Nevertheless, it’s good to keep the following in mind. A chassid once came to the Ruzhiner Rebbe with a complaint. “Every year during the Yomim Noraim, I make sure to have kavanah during Kedushah, as I know it’s supposed to be a segulah for wealth, yet I am still a poor, poor man!”
The Rebbe replied, “The segulah works for people who have this kavanah only during Kedushah; during the rest of davening, they remain focused on the words they are saying. But if the only thing you think about throughout the tefillos is money, money, money, you can’t expect to see any results.”
SHABBOS IS THE MEKOR HABRACHA, as we say each week in Lecha Dodi: “Likras Shabbos lechu v’nelcha, ki hi mekor habracha.” Taking a break from our weekly grind and giving a day for Hashem opens the gates for much bracha to enter our lives.
Rav Shimshon Pincus, zt”l, describes a man who walks up to a store, only to find it locked. He doesn’t understand what is going on; it’s in the middle of the day, but the owner won’t buy or sell.
“What’s going on today?” he asks the owner, whom he spots standing nearby.
“A large shipment of merchandise just arrived,” the owner replies, “and I need some time to unpack it. Once it’s all on shelves, I’ll reopen my store, and you’ll be welcome to come in and buy whatever you need.”
So, too, with Shabbos. On Shabbos, the “store” is closed. On Shabbos, all the “goods” we will subsist on over the following week are being organized and prepared for us.
Keeping Shabbos properly is a key to unlocking financial bounty.
Rabbi Elimelech Biderman, shlit”a, recalls how 40 years ago, the financial situation in his childhood home was dire. His father, the Lelover Rebbe, zt”l, had no choice but to travel abroad to raise some money to support his family. He stayed in London and then in New York for close to half a year, until he finally came up with a hefty sum. Just before returning to Eretz Yisroel, he made a stop in Toronto for a few days.
That Shabbos, a thief broke into the home where he was staying. Oddly, the thief made off with the Rebbe’s stash of cash and nothing else. Understandably, the host felt terrible and was very afraid of his guest’s reaction. But when the Rebbe heard of his loss, he broke into a lively dance, singing about Shabbos with a completely composed and joyous demeanor.
His host was amazed and let everyone in the
A great many things are said to be segulos for parnassah. Here we bring several reputably sourced segulos. Keep in mind that it’s always preferable to stick to one or two segulos for a long period of time than trying different ones all the time.

community know what a tzaddik they had in their midst. If this was the way he could react when all of his hardearned money was taken from him, he must be a great man. The community members flocked to see him and brought along nice donations. By the time the Lelover Rebbe left town, he was loaded with a greater amount than he had come with after months of collecting.
He who honors the Shabbos merits a “nachala bli metzarim.”
THE FIRST TIP for parnassah that we’ll mention is no far-flung segulah promised by a mekubal; it’s a guarantee spelled out in the Gemara (Taanis 9a) regarding our halachic obligation to tithe our earnings. The pasuk (Devarim 14:22) says “Aser te’aser,” which Chazal explain means, “Aser bishvil shetisasher,” give a tenth in order to become wealthy. By giving of our earnings to maaser, we actually bring Hakadosh Baruch Hu into our businesses as a full-fledged Partner. As in any good partnership — or even better — our success thus becomes His primary goal, too. Hashem helps us prosper!
ways gives maaser, which comes out to 500 shekels per month.
“What?!” his workmate replied incredulously. “I don’t understand you! How can you give maaser if you earn so little? How do you get to the end of the month?”
“Let me ask you a question,” Danny replied. “If I earn 5,000 shekels and I give away 500, how much am I left with in my pocket?”
Interestingly, giving maaser is the only place Hashem invites us to “test Him.” It says in Malachi (3:10), “U’vechanuni na b’zos — Bring the maaser into the treasury, and test Me with it,” says Hashem, “[to see] if I will not open for you the windows of Shamayim and pour down for you bracha until there will be no room to contain it.”
Danny* works as a doorman at a supermarket in Yerushalayim. He earns 5,000 shekels (just under $1,500) a month for standing at the door and stamping receipts as customers exit with their purchases. One day, he mentioned to his coworker who stocks the shelves that he al-
“4,500 shekels.”
“Nope!” said Danny. “I’m left with 500 shekels!” He paused for a moment. “I use 4,500 shekels to pay my rent and food expenses. That goes down the drain, but the 500 shekels that I give away — that stays in my bank account forever.”
In fact, Dovid Hamelech says in Tehillim (112:3), “Hon v’osher b’veiso, v’tzidkaso omedes la’ad,” which can be understood to mean that wealth and riches remain in one’s physical house, but the tzedakah he gives remains with him forever.
A person’s real income is not the earnings he brings in and spends, but rather the earnings he gives away. He’ll meet them again in Olam Haba.
Several years ago, there was a young French boy from a poor home who came to live in Eretz Yisroel. Sadly, he knew little about Yiddishkeit other than the fact that he was a Yid. He spent Shabbos at a Chabad house and enjoyed every minute. In conversation with the rabbi, he mentioned that he dreamed of being a wealthy man one day.
“Listen to me,” the rabbi replied. “If you give 20% of all that you earn to charity, you’ll be a rich man.”
Well, it is now more than 35 years later, and this young boy owns a global company that’s doing exceedingly well. And, no, he has never neglected to separate maaser and chomesh from his earnings. In fact, he has several wealthy friends, unfortunately not shomrei Torah u’mitzvos, who
also enjoy inflated bank accounts — all on the account of the secret to success that this man taught them. Give maaser. You won’t regret it.
DO YOU WAKE UP IN THE MORNING and rush right into your day? It’s so easy to forget to take care of ourselves. But here’s a tip: Eat a good breakfast — if not to satisfy your hunger, then to satisfy your Heavenly bank account. Washing for bread and bentching properly is a powerful way to bring on the money.
Washing netilas yadayim is also a great segulah for parnassah (Refael Hamalach). The first letters of the words “םידי תליטנ לע” spell out the word “ינע” to show us that one who isn’t careful with washing his hands will fall into poverty. On the other hand, pouring an abundance of water, or “םימ,” brings wealth, following the acronym it spells out: “ךדי תנתמ רשועמ.” By pouring plenty of water over our hands, we will be showered with handfuls of bracha and prosperity from Above!
Then, after completing the meal, we have the opportunity once again to open the gates of blessing by reciting Birkas Hamazon.
The Sefer Hachinuch writes that one who recites Birkas Hamazon with kavanah is guaranteed never to be de-
prived of parnassah. The Beer Heitev similarly explains that saying Birkas Hamazon with kavanah removes Hashem’s wrath, thus bringing abundant livelihood to last a lifetime. The Chida writes that bentching aloud in a pleasant voice is a segulah for wealth.
Elchonon* had a great job. Working at the same place for more than a decade, he worked his way up to a managerial position and brought a comfortable paycheck home. Out of the blue, his boss informed him that he was selling the business, and with it, Elchonon would be losing his position.
Learning to scrimp and make it through the month after being accustomed to a cushy lifestyle was very difficult for Elchonom. A few weeks into this challenge, he attended a family simcha. At the end of the meal, he noticed that the cousin sitting near him was bentching far longer than anyone else at the table. This cousin had noticed Elchonon’s demoralized demeanor, and before leaving the hall, he asked about it. Elchonon described his predicament, and this relative told him that since he’d taken upon himself to recite Birkas Hamazon with kavanah, he saw a blessing in his personal finances.
It couldn’t hurt to try, Elchonon thought, even though he knew he wouldn’t always have patience for the extra five minutes this would require.
Shortly thereafter, Elchonon was in a minor road accident and landed in the hospital for several days. There, he
met another frum Yid, and he suddenly found himself pouring out his broken heart. Not only had his new kabbalah not brought the results he was waiting for, but here he found himself in such a vulnerable place, recovering from surgery in the hospital! The man listened, and on the spot, shared that he was the CEO of a large company and happened to be looking for an individual with the qualifications Elchonon had.
Indeed, bentching with kavanah from a bentcher is the best investment one can make.
THIS IS QUITE BASIC, but deserves mention: the value of “ehrlich fardint ” gelt, or “kosher” money.
The Chofetz Chaim states that one should be careful not to harm another by stealing or taking money that is not coming to him, and through this, he will see much abundance in his books. The Midrash Pinchas writes that it’s a segulah for parnassah not to engage in any dishonesty in business.
In general, yiras Shamayim in all areas is key to unlocking our source of bounty.
Don Ghermizian, CEO of the American Dream Mall, shared the following encounter. He once met a group of young men who asked for
After they agreed, he said, “Guard your eyes.”
The men looked at him incredulously. They came to ask for business advice, not mussar!
“Yes, that’s your best business advice,” Mr. Ghermizian reiterated. “I’ve been in business for 40 years, and that’s the best advice I can give you. If you keep your eyes pure, especially in today’s day and age when it’s so hard, you are showing Hashem that you are ready to overcome your natural inclination, and Hashem will go above and beyond for you as well.”
The following Tuesday, one of the men who’d been present called with an incredible story.
“After speaking with you, I decided to delete a certain app,” he said. “On Sunday, I deleted it. But then I restored it. On Monday, I decided to delete it for good.”
That very afternoon, the gentleman received a phone call from a client he’d been chasing for years without success. Out of the blue, he was offered a contract, valued at $30 million annually. The man was dumbfounded.
“Within minutes of showing Hashem that he was serious about protecting his eyes,” Mr. Ghermizian concludes, “Hashem delivered this tremendous blessing, so he could see this was no coincidence. He did the right thing, and Hashem immediately handed him the reward!”
May all of Klal Yisroel be zoche to be mefarnes our families with honesty, full wallets and no worries!
Kids in the kitchen is a wonderful… play on words. It’s also a wonderful thing to think about doing. It’s even a wonderful memory, when you think about having done it in the past. However, kids in the kitchen is often a wacky experience, with even wackier results. It’s not for the faint of heart, and even several grandmothers with years of experience tackling big deals like Pesach and moving days have admitted to feeling lightheaded at the thought of allowing their children (or grandchildren) into their kitchen.
But there has to be a way to make it at least a little bit easier. So we’ve asked around, begging veterans for slivers of inspiration and crumbs of ideas on how to successfully bring kids into the kitchen. We’ve whipped up quite a selection of tips and tricks, many of which come frozen in the freezer section of the supermarket. Go ahead, preheat the oven to 350° and read on.

When I tell Hendy why I’m calling, she shares the following story, which is rather telling.
“It was going to be an individual Mommy-and-me chocolate chip cookie activity with my two-and-a-half-year-old son. We had all the ingredients ready on the counter when the power blew. It was in the middle of the day, so there was sunlight, and it didn’t look too dramatic to my little boy. He didn’t understand that the mixer just wasn’t going to turn on, no matter what. Ay, the tantrum! He wouldn’t stop! He even suggested that I buy batteries for the mixer! In the end, I let him eat all the chocolate chips from the package, and he calmed down. When the electricity came back on, he ran to the mixer, clapping with joy. Except that now we had no chocolate chips left. Guess who was stuck making chocolate-chip-less chocolate chip cookies?”
Every ingredient must be wiped down before going back into the refrigerator or pantry. This helps avoid runny corn syrup in the cabinet.
Pro-tip
Children should work on a counter saver or plastic tablecloth for easy cleanup.
Hendy’s go-to cookie recipe
Bingo’s ready-to-bake chocolate chip cookies. It’s about $7 for plenty of raw cookies, and the children think they’re really making it from scratch if you let it defrost and allow them to reshape the dough with cookie cutters.
This perfect balabusta produces miniatures with layers and glazes, seemingly with the wave of her magic wand. She bakes spelt and white challah most weeks, has sourdough-making under her belt, and has a houseful of both girls and boys.
Her answer when asked how she is able to bake her amazing goodies at record speed — and still feel comfortable when strangers open her kitchen cabinets to see the spotlessly organized insides — is an eye opener.
“I’m not a big Mommy-andkids baker, at all.” Translation: I don’t let my kids enter the kitchen.
Ah. That explains a lot.
But still; there has to be a way to comfortably have kids in the kitchen. Where is the mother who could teach me some tricks?

YENTY MERMELSTEIN, 24
3 children, ages 0–4
“The extent of our mini baking sessions,” Yenty says, “is making a small amount of a basic sugar cookie recipe in a two-pound container by hand.”
Yenty’s kids get cookie cutters in various shapes as well as sprinkles, and decorate the cookies on lined cookie sheets spread on a plastic tablecloth at the kitchen table.
“By now,” Yenty adds, “I know what I’m dealing with and only bake when I’m up to it. The first few times I baked with my four-year-old, I couldn’t imagine why I was so exhausted at the end of the day!”
kitchen rule for junior chefs
No eating raw cookie dough.
Pro-tip
For anxious little tasters, you can rush the process and bake the cookies in the Betty Crocker.
Yenty’s go-to cookie recipe
4 cups flour
3 sticks margarine
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 T. vanilla sugar
Mix vigorously with a fork until the margarine combines with the other ingredients. (For best results, do this when the kids are away at school or napping, but if need be, you can let the children pour the ingredients into the plastic container.) Bake at 350° for 12 to 15 minutes.
HOLTZER, 30
4 kids, ages 1–10
“I’m not such a good mother,” Shiffy announces when I finally reached her.
Because she doesn’t bake with her kids. Ever. (Maybe that makes her a better mother than some of the moms who hover over plastic-lined counters? I’m not judging either way. Yiddishe mammes are all super mothers!)
She either bakes when the kids are out of the house and the baby is napping, or she buys cookies at the local bakery. How about challah? Her mother sends challah for Shabbos. Yes, always. Ever since she got married. Shoutout to Yiddishe bubbies!
MELBER, 42
2 kids at home, ages 3 and 8
Ariella has a great pro-tip. “Just don’t bake. I take my children with me when I go to the bakery. On the rare occasion that I try to bake something on my own, I’m busy calling my friends for tips, help and reassurance as the batter splatters and spills over the sides of my mixer. There’s no way I can do that with my children around!”
6 kids at home, ages 2–16
Gitty shares simple, easy-to-follow answers. How does she deal with the mess? By threatening never to let them bake again. (Then breaking her word the next Sunday, of course.)
“I’ve found cocoa in every single kitchen cabinet so far, including the narrow one where we keep only Havdalah items!”
A
If you’re old enough to bake, you’re old enough to clean up.
5 kids at home, ages 2–14
I reach Rivky when she’s sitting in the waiting room at a doctor’s office, and I ask her how she bakes with her kids. With children ranging from toddlers to teenagers, I knew she had to have some kind of system in place.
But before she shares some tips, she shares a story.
“One Chol Hamoed, we decided to spend the day baking with the kids. Each child chose a recipe from one of my cookbooks, we compiled a grocery list, and then we went together to buy the ingredients at the supermarket. Once we had the ingredients, the fun began.
“I’m changing details to protect family privacy and to block out the trauma, but trust me, it wasn’t pretty. There was fighting, crying, lines for the mixer, grab-fests for the sugar, messes upon messes, and more and more and more crying. In the end, it looked more like Tisha B’Av than Chol Hamoed.”
There’s one basic rule in the house: If you want to bake, you have to do it all the way. This includes buying the ingredients and continuing to roll out the cookies, even after the excitement wears off — which usually happens when the bowl is still full. And, of course, cleanup.
Pro-tip
Keep it simple. Don’t try any exotic magazine recipes that look amazing but will end up in the trash.
“I once tried making a three-layer cake topped with fondant and edible pearls,” Rivky says, “because my daughter liked the picture of it in a magazine. Enough said.”
But not everyone thinks that kids in the kitchen is such a big deal.
4 bochurim at home, ages 14–20
A mother of many bochurim, Fraidy shares an interesting perspective.
“Who says baking is only for girls? My boys are fantastic in the kitchen.”
Baking doesn’t faze her. She says that on Friday afternoons, her sons regularly defrost dough from her freezer and bake rugelach. Which is pretty impressive, I must admit. But the story she shares is even better.
Fraidy’s married son walked into her house one day while she was making granola bars. He sauntered over to the counter and announced, “Yum, I haven’t made those in a while!” and promptly took charge of the baking.
kitchen
In Fraidy’s house, the rules are clear. Baking comes with cleanup — and the boys are pretty good at it. They even use steel wool and dish soap.
Fraidy’s go-to granola bar recipe
Combine the following in a bowl, mixing after every few ingredients.
1 cup oil
2 cups brown sugar (or 1 cup demerara sugar)
4 T. honey
4 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla sugar
2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. cinnamon
Pinch salt
2 cups old-fashioned oats
2½ cups crisp rice
1 cup chocolate chips
1½ cups craisins, optional
1 cup slivered almonds, optional
Using a spatula, spread the mixture on a cookie sheet. Then use a rolling pin to roll the mixture until it’s flat. To keep the rolling pin clean, put a piece of parchment paper over the mixture before rolling.
Bake at 350° for approximately 25 to 30 minutes. When done, cut into rectangles or squares.
7 kids at home, ages 2–19
I was visiting Esther one summer afternoon. Her summer home was clean and cool, and her cleaning lady was wiping down her kitchen counters.
At one point, her daughter came in and asked, “Mommy, can I bake?”
“Sure, no problem,” my friend answered easily.
I was so surprised. Why would she allow her daughter to mess up a freshly cleaned kitchen?
I watched the baking session unfold. Her daughter took a disposable cookie sheet, lined it with disposable parchment paper, brought the box of Ostreicher’s chocolate chip cookie dough from the freezer, spread the cookies evenly on the paper and — oops!
“Ma, what should I do?!” she wailed. “I forgot to preheat the oven!”
I laughed out loud. Hardly a calamity.
“But the cookies are going to be deformed!” the girl fretted. “They need to go into the oven right away; it says so on the box!”
Esther advised her to put the cookie sheet into the refrigerator while the oven preheated.
Crisis averted.
There was even a “cherry on top.” When the cookies were almost ready, Esther’s daughter took them out of the oven, gently pressed some mini-marshmallows into each one, and then let them finish baking with the marshmallow, resulting in a s’mores-pie-like cookie.
Pro-tip
Counter savers and background music.
Esther’s go-to s’mores pie recipe
1 graham cracker pie crust
Melt the following in a double boiler or in a disposable aluminum pan in the oven.
1 stick margarine
2 T. oil
1 cup sugar
1 T. vanilla sugar
Allow to cool before adding:
2 eggs + 1 yolk
¾ cup cocoa
½ cup flour
½ cup chocolate chips
Mix with a fork, pour into the pie crust, and bake for 30 minutes (or until center is slightly set but still moist). Remove from the oven, add mini marshmallows, and return for another 10 minutes.
PABLO!
PIETRO! WHAT…?
WE’RE NOT FOOLS. WE’VE BEEN FOLLOWING YOU. YOU NEVER TOLD US YOU KNEW WHERE THE TREASURE WAS. YOU WERE PLANNING TO KEEP IT FOR YOURSELF!
NO! I WANTED… I THOUGHT… MAYBE WE COULD GIVE AT LEAST PART OF IT TO THE IMMIGRANTS. SOME OF THE TREASURE BELONGS TO YISHAI AND MY FATHER… THEY WANT SO BADLY TO SAVE —
STOP BABBLING, LIAR. A JEW STAYS A JEW. YOU BETRAYED US, PEDRO. NOW WE BETRAY YOU.
HAND OVER THE TREASURE!
RECAP: BACK HOME, MANY IMMIGRANTS HAVE DIED OF TYPHOID, AND WITHOUT MORE RESOURCES, ANOTHER OUTBREAK IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME. A CLUE SPARKS A REALIZATION – MICHAEL AND MISHA FINALLY REALIZE WHERE THEY’D SEEN THE INSCRIPTION BEFORE!
NO, THIS ISN’T THE TREASURE YET. IT LOOKS LIKE YET ANOTHER PIECE OF THE PUZZLE.
BUT… WHERE DOES THIS HANDLE BELONG?
WHEN MICHAEL SAID HE RECOGNIZED THE ARTWORK, HE WASN’T TALKING ABOUT THE LOST CITY. WHAT? WHY ARE YOU SMILING?
AT THE MORENOS’ HOME:
I CAN HIRE MORE WORKERS AND SEND THEM TO THE FIELDS.
THAT’S GENEROUS OF YOU, BUT IT MEANS YOU AND THE KIDS WILL HAVE TO PLOW THE LAND ALL ON YOUR OWN.
OR… MAYBE WE CAN TAKE OUT A LOAN.
TATTE! ABUELO! WE FOUND ANOTHER STRANGE PART OF THE PUZZLE — LIKE THE GEAR!
AND MICHAEL REMEMBERED THAT ABOVE ABUELO JOSÉ’S FIREPLACE, THERE’S A PAINTING… I CAN’T BELIEVE IT! MY GREATGRANDFATHER’S PAINTING! HOW DID I NOT NOTICE...?
BUT… I CAN’T FIND WHERE TO INSERT THE HANDLE.
