However, it bothered me that perfectly beautiful aspects of our town were criticized. I’ve been making phone orders from various groceries for years now, and I’m so, so satisfied with the service each gives! Whenever there is a mistake, the groceries take full responsibility and try to correct it. As for exercise groups, in my area, there are two serious groups that run a few times a week — yes with music, too! And I’m sure there are many groups like them in other areas. There are also great therapy services in Monsey,

and if child qualified in Brooklyn, I don’t see why he can’t qualify in Rockland County, too. A Proud Monsey Resident

It is already a while that I have heard from my many friends in Chinuch that they struggle terribly to make ends meet. That alone, unfortunately, didn’t have much of an effect on my conscious. After all am I — and many others — not in the same situation? I definitely felt sorry for them, but not sorrier than I feel for anyone else in the low to middle income bracket. However, my attitude changed when a neighbor of mine approached me, inquiring whether I knew of a Rebbe position available in a community outside Monsey. I turned to him in wonderment and asked, “Are you not a melamed for the past decade in ____ (name omitted for obvious reasons)? What happened? Are they dismissing you?” I asked somewhat uncomfortably. “No, not at all,” he said. “But ble”h my family is growing both in size and age and I just cannot continue at my current job on such a low salary.” So I asked him how a Rebbe position in one of the communities

outside greater Monsey would help. After all, a Rebbe position isn’t the highest paying job. “I guess you have no clue how low of a salary I am making,” he said, and shared the exact amount of his weekly paycheck. That is when I changed from having a passive feeling of pity to an active feeling of concern for this injustice. How can it be that he is in a job for so many years and his salary is not just minimal, but rather a third lower than any low-income job? He hasn’t received a raise since he started his job! (Although the tuitions have been raised many times and the class sizes are growing rapidly over the years, for some reason this hasn’t affected the melamdim’s salary.) Not because he doesn’t qualify for one, like some of you might be thinking. He is a mechanech par excellence! And that I know firsthand. The first thing I did to try to console myself was to assume that the mosed he works for is an exception and that all other mosdos surely pay way better. So for the next few days, whenever I chanced

Your Voice upon a mechanech (from both litvishe and chassidishe mosdos), be it a melamed or a menahal, I asked him how much the average Rebbe’s salary is in the mosed he is employed at. Lo and behold, I received similar numbers from everyone. Two mosdos were an exception, with their average salaries being a little more in line with the regular job market (not that it justifies the work they invest, but at least it’s up to par). Do you understand what is going on with our children’s melamdim? The very people who put their lives into the success of the continuity of Klal Yisroel, who are referred to in the Gemara as “Osay m’leches Hashem” are being so underappreciated! And this is not a job for just anyone. Your average melamed must possess a varied skill set. He is a supermarket manager of twenty-eight employees (students), yet at the same time, he must have the precision and intense concentration of a surgeon in the operating room to ensure that each talmid receives the right dosage of attention, affection, and discipline. He has to be equipped with the orating skills of a lawyer, explaining the most complex materials in a way that the most challenged student will comprehend. And this is only while in the classroom. Let’s not forget the amount of work that goes into class preparation and the “customer service” calls he receives every night from the parents. And they are the ones who are being so underpaid?! Now what? Well, the easiest thing to do is to point fingers at the board members, menahalim and administrators of the mosdos, isn’t it? Aren’t we paying a big part of our incomes for tuition? Doesn’t it add up to a substantial amount, enough to allow our

sons’ melamdim to receive a decent salary? So I sat down and made the calculations and it definitely does amass to a large amount of money. However, after calculating all other expenses besides for the melamdim (i.e. secular studies staff, maintenance, electric and water bills, administrators, office employees, menahalim, the cook and kitchen expenses etc.), I realized that playing the blame game will not only get us nowhere, but it is not so fair to blame the administration, for even if we include all those extra fees we are charged, like registration, re-registration, and insurance fees, there seems not be a surplus. Yesterday, a menahel whom I had spoken to about this topic approached me and told me that one of his best melamdim, who was always full of energy and fully focused on each talmid’s success b”H recently made a Shidduch and since then he has just not been the same. And we all know why. His head is elsewhere. It’s probably spinning many MPH, trying to figure out how he can put together fifty thousand dollars and pay it back, when he cannot even cover the month in the first place. The menahel told me that if there is no change to the status quo, he will have no choice but to quit his job. He simply doesn’t have the heart to watch this unjustifiable treatment the melamdim receive continue any longer. So what is the solution? To charge the average parent more in tuition — I think everyone is in full agreement — is not a solution. We are already paying an enormous amount in tuitions. To be honest, if I had a solution, I wouldn’t be spending my time writing these lines but rather, would take action to solve the problem. What I do know is that the Halacha is that it is the responsibility of the people in the town to hire melamdim. So, in essence, we are responsible to find a solution to keep the experienced

and qualified Rabbeim in the mosdos of our community, and ensure that they maintain their dignity and presence of mind to be able to continue their M’leches Hakodesh with great success. Therefore, I believe that the first step toward a solution is that everyone be aware of the extent of the problem and understand that this problem directly affects the success of our children. Once this is accomplished, we, as a community, will be able to come together and figure out a comprehensive solution which will be a benefit to all - the melamdim, the talmidim — and ultimately — to us parents. DON’T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU……..

With the summer about halfway through, it is a time of excursions that are memorable and lots of fun… Unless, of course, it suddenly is not. What urged me to write this letter is the experience a heimishe day camp had on a trip to a water park in New Jersey. After two hours of excitement mounting as they traveled, they arrived only to be stopped by the New Jersey Department of Transportation inspectors, whose responsibility is to ensure that the buses conform to all rules regarding the safe transport of passengers. The NJDOT often stations inspectors at various amusement parks and other points of interest to conduct random inspections of buses to ascertain their roadworthiness. Some of the things they look for are proper registration, proper insurance, properly licensed drivers, and a physical inspection of the bus itself. This particular day camp used their own school buses which they knew were in good repair, properly registered, and insured. Unfortunately, that’s where what

Your Voice should have been an enjoyable trip suddenly took an unpleasant turn. The NJDOT immediately disqualified the buses from further use, and forced the day camp to hire other buses for the return trip home. The sight of the suspenseful conversation between the drivers, camp officials, and inspectors left many of the children bewildered and a bit apprehensive, and the heretofore anticipated trip suddenly lost its luster. This is why I decided to write this informational article so that those who organize these trips and outings take the necessary measures to ensure that this unpleasant and costly experience does not occur to them. I will briefly point you to the NY State rules as well as the US DOT rules so that you can peruse these articles at length, at your own leisure. The law requires that any passenger buses, including school buses that are for hire i.e. chartered trips, especially when traveling out of your home state be: a) Properly registered with the respective state’s Department of Transportation and prominently display the registration number (or DOT number) on the vehicle. b) Have all required insurance, in addition to the regular insurance carried by the bus. (Buses doing interstate charters must have at least $5,000,000 of insurance coverage.) c) Be registered with the USDOT and FMCSA and prominently display the USDOT number on the bus as well. Buses found not to comply with these requirements can be, and are often taken out of service immediately, for the remainder of that trip. Non-conformity to these requirements can also result in very stiff fines causing unnecessary financial hardship. One day in early June, I had a meeting with both the principal of the school I teach in, and a parent of one of my students. There was no air conditioning in the room, and it was extremely hot. When I returned to my classroom, I could feel my heart racing. I was also unable to write, and my speech was slurred. I kept thinking to myself that I was just hot and somehow managed to get through the rest of the day. When I returned home, and still felt out of sorts, I called my husband. He quickly sent over a friend who was an EMT. This friend sent me to the hospital to be admitted. After a few days, I found out I had suffered from a mini-stroke. My speech and fine-motor ability were compromised, but my gross-motor was overall intact. Interestingly enough, my insurance paid for physical therapy, but not the occupational therapy that I needed. By hashgacha pratis, my sister works as an occupational therapist at a medical clinic, and was able to receive permission to treat me privately at the clinic using their equipment. PLEASE BE AWARE: This person was a young stroke patient and suddenly not being able to write or speak well are possible signs of a stroke.

WeighSmarter So, if you made it through the fast, your best option is to break your fast the same way you started it. Whatever you do, do not drink a cup of orange juice with a slice of marble cake! I know it’s very tempting, but it’s really one of the worst ways to break a fast. Instead, turn to proteins like chicken, fish, or eggs, and incorporate some vegetables into your meal as well — either cooked, fresh, or in soup. If your stomach feels very sensitive, you can always break your fast on light coffee or tea, and start eating a bit later. If you want to stay in “fatburning mode,” it’s the perfect opportunity to continue eating low carb. 2. I know you’re hungry, but make sure to chew your food slowly. I repeat, chew your food 20 times and eat very slowly. Your digestive system will thank you. 3. Everything I’ve mentioned also applies to people who would like to maintain their current weight.

How much do calories really matter? Since Tisha B’Av is coming up, I want to address a few details regarding starting and breaking the fast. You might have heard the saying: “Any person can fast, but it takes a man of strength to know how to break it.” Although some people fast better than others, knowing how to break the fast is crucial.

STARTING THE FAST 1. Before the fast, make sure to drink plenty of water. More importantly, drink fluids that contain electrolytes, like Zero Vitamin Water, or consider using Cellfood drops from the health food store. (Make sure to follow the directions on how to use it). The most important thing is that you stay hydrated. 2. It’s important to note that stuffing yourself with food at the start of the fast won’t help you. In fact, it might make you crave even more food! 3. As for your meal before the fast, a combination of protein, fat, vegetables, and some grains (about a half-cup) will suffice. 4. Avoid bingeing on sugary, high-carb foods. Please be fair to yourself and your body, and choose to fill up on healthy foods. Eat eggs, salad, and matzah instead of cheese noodles, kugel, and chocolate pudding. Got my point?

BREAKING THE FAST 1. This is a tough one, but if you’re struggling with extra body weight, I’d like to fill you in on a little secret: When you fast, your body can go into ketosis, which means that you will burn your stored fat for energy instead of storing fat from high-carb foods.

you need to reduce your caloric intake even more for your “diet” to continue working. So, you eat less and less, and maybe you lose some more weight, but here is the deal: Low-calorie diets are known to break down muscle mass! You want to lose fat and keep as much muscle as possible, and maybe even add some. In order for your muscle mass to survive, you need calories in the form of healthy food. After all, the more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn — even while you sleep! So, if you choose to go on a low-calorie diet, you’re simply wasting away your muscle mass. You will burn fewer calo-

ries, making it more and more difficult to lose weight and maintain your new size. Hunger is a major issue as well, because the last thing you want to be is hungry when you’re trying to reach your goal size or weight. Fighting hunger is not part of human nature — human beings are supposed to eat! When you restrict your caloric intake, you will automatically be eating way less fat (fat has the most calories), and that’s not a good thing. You see, fat satiates you, and eating healthy fats like avocado (which is a great pre- and post-fast option), almonds, full-fat cheese, and full-fat sour cream help you

stay satiated. Ultimately, the low-calorie, low-fat diet option isn’t effective in the long term. It makes sense when you do the math, but in reality, you’re paying a high price for your health. MOURNING OUR LOSS Leah* is a high school girl who lost her mother at a very young age, lo aleinu. She cannot remember her mother at all. Her teacher had a discipline policy whereby one lateness to class would result in a warning, and a second lateness would result in a phone call to the girl’s mother. After Leah committed the offense twice, the teacher asked for her mother’s phone number. “Oh, you can’t reach my mother by phone,” winked Leah, as her friends chuckled along. “There are no phones in the bais hachaim!” Despite Leah’s outward show of nonchalance — possibly to avoid being pitied — I have no doubt that Leah feels deeply the pain of not having a mother. Surely she can see what the other girls have and realizes that she is missing something very significant, so she does have a sense of the pain of not having a mother. But having never been mothered, she cannot feel the full impact of having lost her mother. Only those who grew up having a mother and experiencing a mother’s love and care can truly fathom the depth of such a loss. Losing her mother was a tragedy for Leah personally, it was a tragedy for her family, and it was a tragedy for her mother. We are like Leah. We lost the Bais Hamikdash, and we do not remember what is was like to

have it. But unlike Leah, we do not see anyone else having a Bais Hamikdash, so we cannot guess what it must have been like either. We do not know what we lost personally, we do not understand what we lost nationally, nor can we fathom Hashem’s pain. On Tisha B’Av, we mourn the loss of the Bais Hamikdash. The question is: How can we mourn

How can we mourn something we have not experienced and which we have never witnessed? something we have not experienced and which we have never witnessed? We must do our best to try and understand what it is that we mourn, and without personal experience, we can only accomplish this through learning and contemplation. There are three main aspects of this mourning. The most important aspect is Hashem’s mourning — the Shechina lost its dwelling place in this world. Hashem had strongly desired to have a dwelling place for His Shechina in this world (Midrash Tanchuma Naso

16), and this was lost. There is also the national aspect of losing the Bais Hamikdash — Klal Yisroel lost something significant. But in this article I would like to focus on our personal loss as individuals striving to grow closer to Hashem. I went swimming in two places in Eretz Yisroel, and I had a very different experience in each place. I swam in the Yam Hamelach, where it takes very little effort to stay afloat. There is a reason why the Gemara calls the Yam Hamelach the water in which nobody ever drowned! It felt as if the water itself was holding me up. I also went swimming in a pool of water beneath a waterfall in the north of Eretz Yisroel. For some reason, it was extremely difficult to stay afloat. Treading water took tremendous effort. It felt as if the water itself was pulling me down. After a while, I finally realized why this was so. A large amount of water was falling into the pool from above, yet no river or stream was flowing out of the pool to carry away the added water. Most likely, the water was flowing downwards and out into a hole at the bottom, possibly into a cave. The water itself was ever so slightly pulling swimmers down, and you could feel it. We want to grow in ruchniyus. We want to grow close to Hashem. We read inspiring sto-

ries about great tzaddikim and tzidkanios, and we want to be like them. We make plans and dreams of how to improve ourselves — we will daven with more kavanah, we will say more Tehillim, we will do more chesed, we will speak more kindly — but all too quickly, the feelings get drowned out. We get bogged down in the difficulties of daily life, and our yetzer hara keeps us distracted. Like trying to swim in the pool of water beneath the waterfall, we feel like we are being sucked down, and any progress we make is the result of gargantuan efforts. The Gemara in Sotah 48a says that when the Bais Hamikdash was destroyed, people with complete emunah and bitachon ceased to exist, and from the day that the Bais Hamikdash was destroyed, there is not a single day that is not cursed. The Gemara in Sotah 48b says, “R’ Ami says, ‘When the first Bais Hamikdash was destroyed, fine silk and fine crystal ceased to be.’” The Sefer Keren Ora writes that the “fine crystal” which was darkened refers to the loss of clarity of the light of Torah, and that the “fine silk” refers to our “garments” – our Torah and mitzvos, which had become sullied. He explains that when the Bais Hamikdash was standing, it brought light to the world, helping to illuminate and reveal the derech Hashem. This light put us on the right path and made it easy for every person to purify himself. With the destruction of the Bais Hamikdash, the light disappeared. The world is darkened without the light of the Shechina emanating from the Bais Hamikdash, and we are left to stumble in the darkness. But we can still experience glimmers of the Shechina today.

The Shechina rests on the Kosel HaMaaravi, on the face of and in the presence of a tzaddik, and by the tziyun of a tzaddik. If you have ever been in the presence of a true tzaddik, you know how it feels. I have been to see the Skulener Rebbe, shlita. A light shines from his face, and a warm, gentle glow of peace envelopes the room. In his presence, I felt not only the inspiration to strive for more in ruchnius, but I also felt that the possibility was more real. If only I could bask in his holy presence every day, I am sure that I would be madreigos beyond where I am today. Like the waters of the Yam Hamelach, which lift up the swimmer, experiencing even a taste of the Shechina makes growing in ruchnius easier to achieve. When the Bais Hamikdash stood, the light of the Shechina emanated outwards and elevated people throughout Y e r u s h a l ay i m , Eretz Yisroel, and the world. Bechira still existed and if a person chose to turn his back on Hashem, chalila, he certainly could, but if a person wanted to grow close to Hashem, it was far easier to do so. Now that we have a sense of what we are missing, we can begin to mourn our loss. And once we mourn our loss, we can make ourselves fitting to see the rebuilding of the Bais Hamikdash, as it says: “Whoever mourns Yerushalayim will be zocheh to see her happiness, and whoever does not mourn Yerushalayim will not see her happiness.” (Gemara Taanis 30b) May the next Tisha B’Av be one of celebration in the rebuilt Yerushalayim Ir HaKodesh.

A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO THE HALACHOS OF TISHA B’AV 5776 WHEN TISHA B’AV FALLS ON SHABBOS (AS IT DOES THIS YEAR), THE FOLLOWING HALACHOS APPLY: • One may eat regular Shabbos meals. Those who say divrei Torah and zemiros every week may do so without any limitations. • One must finish eating shalosh seudos before shkiya. One may have a regular shalosh seudos. Those who are noheg to say divrei Torah every shalosh seudos may do so, but should rather focus on inyanai Tisha B’Av or mussar. One may sing zemiros, the way one is noheg to do every week. • After tzeis/night (each according to their own minhag of zmanim), one should say Hamavdil. After Hamavdil, one must change into weekday clothing, making sure to not put on any freshly laundered clothing. At this point, one should remove all leather footwear. However, some are noheg not to put on Tisha B’Av shoes until after Barchu. One should not change into weekday clothing before night. • On Shabbos, it is muttar to say Tehillim. • One may read about the churban bayis or any other churbonos that occurred during Yiddish history. • Women in extenuating circumstances or women with health issues should ask a shaila with regards to fasting. If one needs to break one’s fast, leading poskim hold that one should first be yotzei with Havdalah before eating. (Each person should ask a shaila how a women should be yotzei with Havdalah). One may not make Havdalah on wine or grape juice. Instead one should use tea, coffee, or milk. However, even if one was yotzei with Havdalah on Tisha B’Av, one should be yotzei with Havdalah again on motzei Tisha B’Av only with someone else reciting Havdalah. TISHA B’AV • According to leading poskim It is a mitzvah for women to hear or recite Eicha and some Kinos. • It is assur to rinse one’s mouth with water or mouthwash. • Swallowing capsules, bitter tablets, or liquid medicine without water is muttar. • People who take daily medication, and as per their doctor should not skip a day, should swallow it with a little water. • Skipping medication against medical advice or fasting against halachic medical advice is forbidden, and a fasting under such circumstances is not considered a taanis. Bathing and Washing • It is assur to wash any parts of one’s body, even with cold water. This includes the hands, face, and feet. • It is muttar to wash dirt, perspiration, eye discharge etc. with lukewarm water. However, one may only wash that particular spot. • If one has an infection, ulcer, cellulitis, or wound that according

to doctor has to be washed daily, it is muttar to do so. • If one’s hands have an odor through dealing with children’s diapers etc., it is muttar to wash them with water and soap. However, using sanitizing lotion, such as Purell, is a preferable option. • One is obligated to wash one’s hand in all the following circumstances: • Negel vasser upon waking up • Before davening • After using the bathroom • After touching any body parts that are usually covered • In all the above circumstances one should wash one’s hand only up to the knuckles. • Before davening mincha, one should wash the full hand. (It’s only for the purposes of davening mincha, meaning after one has davened mincha, one cannot continue washing the full hand.) • One should sit on a low chair or stool until chatzos. • It is assur to wear makeup or use any other cosmetics, including oil, soap, alcohol, cream, ointment, perfume etc. • It is permitted to use deodorant, preferably unscented. • One may not greet anyone on Tisha B’Av. However if a person would be insulted through a lack of greeting, one should do so. • One should not give or promise to give a gift. • It is a inyan to give tzedaka on Tisha B’Av. • When one is informed on Tisha B’Av by a baal simcha that a simcha has occurred, one should preferably say, “Tonight I will wish you mazel tov.” • Social gatherings, reading things that distract from the spirit of the day, taking a walk for pleasure, or exercise etc. are prohibited. • After chatzos the following is muttar: • One may take small children for a walk or to a park or playground, if it is necessary for the children. • One may shop for food. • One may wash one’s hands and wash away the Shabbos dishes. One may wipe down counters and sweep, but not wash, the floors. • One may cook or bake. MOTZEI TISHA B’AV • When Tisha B’Av is a nidcha (pushed off from Shabbos until Sunday, like this year), it is permitted to wash laundry and take showers on motzei Tisha B’Av. • Drinking wine and eating meat is assur until Monday morning.

WHY WAS EIZER LAMUZEN CREATED? Fourteen years ago, I was standing in line at a grocery store, waiting to pay for my purchases. Ahead of me, a young boy was checking out his items. He didn’t have much, just some basics: milk, yogurt, bread, and

a wonderful flash of inspiration and I realized that almost anyone can spare $5 a week — it is such a small amount. If it automatically went into store accounts as people shopped, it is also such an easy way to give. I decided to try it out in my friend’s store, in Landau’s Supermarket in Williamsburg. My friend loved the idea, we implemented it, and after a half a year, I saw a ton of success. I decided to implement it in more groceries and locations.

It is a wonderful feeling to know that instead of having to choose between bread or milk, the person that they are helping can buy their basic necessities with ease. Every applicant must inform us who is his Rav, Dayan, or someone he has a connection with, so we can find out any details we need to know. I must tell you that every Rav we speak to expresses admiration for our unique concept of giving and receiving. HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU GIVE EACH FAMILY? Generally, the money that comes into Account 120 is divided exactly among the families we help. For example, if $5,000 dollars comes in during a given month, and we have ten needy families in that store, each family will receive $500 dollars. If one family needs more than another, we give special instructions to the store. DO FAMILIES KNOW THEY ARE RECEIVING HELP FROM EIZER LAMUZEN? Most do not know; they simply see a credit on their accounts. We set up the system so that recipients themselves aren’t even aware that there is money coming into the account or where the money is coming from. We even have members who donate

$5 a week, but since others have informed us of their hardship, they themselves receive money in their account and are not aware of it. IS THE $5 A SET PRICE? We usually won’t take less than that, however, if someone wants to give more, we will gladly accept it. 90% of our members contribute $5 a week.

YOUNG SPRING VALLEY BIKE RIDER HIT BY CAR A six-year-old boy escaped serious injury after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle. The child, who sustained injuries to his lower body, was at the intersection of Paikin Drive and Marman Place when the accident occurred. The boy was treated by Hatzolah and transported to Nyack Hospital. The motorist was not injured and received no summonses from Spring Valley police who were called to the accident scene. Detective Robert Bookstein of the Spring Valley Police Department said that an investigation determined that the motorist was not at fault. With more and more children riding their bikes in the warm weather, parents are reminded to make sure that their children always wear properly fitted bicycle helmets, approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, in order to prevent head injuries. According to the Automobile Association of America, children should be taught to: • Be particularly cautious around parked cars

HUDSON VALLEY BANK ROBBER STRIKES AGAIN An Orange County bank robbery may be the fourth heist pulled off by the same individual in the Hudson Valley over the last few weeks. The latest heist took place on August 2nd when a man walked into a Chase Bank in Middletown and handed the teller a note saying that he had a gun and was demanding money. The man left the bank with an unknown amount of money and both state police and local authorities responded to the scene. Similar robberies have taken place at the M&T Bank in the Orange County town of Wawayanda,

approximately 20 miles from both Kiryas Joel and Bloomingburg, at a Chase Bank in Garnerville, six miles north of New Square, and at a TD Bank in Fishkill. In all four cases, the suspect did not actually display a weapon and left the scene on foot. The suspect is described as a white man in his twenties weighing approximately 180 pounds and six feet tall, wearing a black baseball cap and sunglasses. (Ramapo Daily Voice, Times Herald Record)

WEISSMANDL ASKS STATE TO RESTORE FULL TERM FOR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER

After an administrative error cut the term of an East Ramapo school board member’s term in half, school board president Yehuda Weissmandl has reached out to the state for help in resolving the technical glitch. Sabrina Charles-Pierre ran unopposed in the May school board election to fill a spot left open by a trustee who had resigned, but by law had to be sworn in within 30 days. Charles-Pierre’s actual swearing-in took place on July 14th, along with three other incumbent board members, several days past the 30-day deadline. Once the mistake was discovered, the board appointed Charles-Pierre to a one-year term, which according to Weissmandl, was the only option open to them under state law. In a letter written on August 1st to New York State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia, Weissmandl said that having to name Charles-Pierre to an abridged term was due to “the application of an arcane

law.” Weissmandl also said that the board’s decision was made at the direction of East Ramapo’s attorney and in consultation with the Department of Education. Noting that Charles-Pierre was elected by close to 5,000 voters when she ran unopposed in the May school board elections, Weissmandl asked the state to intervene and to allow Charles-Pierre to serve out her full term in order to correct the mistake which he described as a “technical error.” A spokesperson for the New York State Department of Education said that the matter is currently being reviewed. “I am glad to see the board is taking action by contacting the commissioner to try to restore my twoyear term,” said Charles-Pierre. “It shows their support and effort to correct the situation.”

for the second part of the day. She hadn’t done that in years. But it was a must. Instead of yelling the kids all the way to their quilts, she would rest. But itwasn’t safe. So one ear twitched and listened. And one ear listened to dreams. She needed energy for the night. Tonight, she decided, she would go to the building offices and she would sell the house. She would sell it, and she wouldn’t wait, like she was told to, until the children got married. She had to do it. She couldn’t take the lack of money. So much work, no help, so little food, so little sleep. She couldn’t. If she sold the apartment, the one she bought for her children when Nachman passed away, she would have money. Instead of crawling down the hill to the makolet every after- So much work, noon, to collect the left- no help, so little over vegetables and see so little what else she could buy food, to survive the day, she’d sleep. buy a large order, once a week. She’d have money for that. And for sandals, because Moishe’s toes were over the front of his sandals already, his toes curled on the floor, his nails chipped and hurt. And she’d have money, maybe, for a babysitter, for the children, once a day, so she could nap. Maybe, she could start living. A bang rattled the stone floor and she shook awake. How long had she dozed off for? She ran to the kitchen, sleep still throbbing through her. The baby was okay. Covered in sugar, but okay. She sat back down, to allow her sensations to normalize. But they wouldn’t, and she remained sluggish and angry, all throughout the day. It was a miracle that when the older ones came home, she saw them through playtime, suppertime, bedtime, and then she was ready to go. Her neighbor had offered to babysit. Malka’la donned her beautiful black tichel, the one with a flower tie on the side. She placed the gold brooch, shaped like a peculiar flower, on her lapel. She remembered how Nachman gave it to her, during their sheva brachos. How rich she had been at that moment. She rushed out into the dusk, heading for money, for hope, and she remembered the first time she hurriedly come to this same office. She had sat then, freshly bereft, a gash so raw with exposed flesh, it hadn’t even started to rot back then. They sat around a small table, but it felt larger, because the room, in a vaulted office in a basement near Shom-

rei Emunim, was polished, and suffused with exhaled smoke. “We gathered the funds,” her father-in-law had said to her, as if she was a small one, entrusted with a big one’s errands. “Some of it is mine, the chasunah money that remained from Nachman.” Had there been money allocated to Nachman, that her shver had kept from them, to be equal to her father’s contribution? But it wasn’t time to let annoyance flare now. For weeks, the face of her husband had plastered the streets of Jerusalem, beseeching people immune to death and loss, to feel something, to give something. Now they had the money. “I can use it. I don’t see how, without Nachman, I can raise the children, and bring in bread.” For four weeks, there had been bleakness and questions. How would she do it? How could he have left? Now,

they needed to get there, because as it was, without a father and with only half a mother, starved and exhausted as she was, they might not make it at all. She rang the bell. They buzzed her in. She laid her claim. “You can’t have that.” “I decided. It’s what I need to do.” “It’s not available.” “What do you mean?”

The money? The apartment? The hope for the future, the straw for today? Gone. Puff. there was a glimmer of realistically shouldering the loss. “I will budget wisely, and use it well.” “On the contrary. This isn’t for today. Today is over nearly as soon as it starts. It’s the future, and the worry about it, that stretches today into impossibly long reams of time, insurmountable. Think about marrying off your children. Who will shtadel for them?” She had smiled, acknowledging that she did appreciate his worry about the future. He took it as consent, and the paperwork was signed by her rushed but unsteady pen. She would redeem it now. Sell that apartment. Take out the money. And when the children would get married? First

They continued smoking. “You are lying to me because I am a widow without any hope or resources.” “We would never.” She looked at them, they looked back. “We would never. Here, we’ll even give you 100 shekels. Just to help.” “I don’t need your 100 shek-

els when you just took off with my 100,000.” She pushed the bill back toward them, but it swayed and rustled and stayed near her, and they didn’t take it back, and in the end, she was forced to pick it up and jam it into her pocket because it spelled breakfast for tomorrow, or not, but the money was tainted with toxic poison, and it burned a hole of disgust straight through her pocket and into her deepest being and as she walked away, down the Jerusalem slopes, it finally hit her, what they had told her in that hazy, smoke-filled office. The money? The apartment? The hope for the future, the straw for today? Gone. Puff. With 100 shekels, the embers of a burning dream, burning her. She flushed the bill out of her pocket. “Take it, take it, I don’t want it,” she said to no one. Her children needed it. They did, but she couldn’t. She let her fingers go slack from pinching the bill. The Jerusalem night wind whipped it out of her hand and blew it, down the sidewalk, tumbling on the road, faster than a moving cat. Summer Soups Making supper is a bit challenging in the Nine Days. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to lose the severity of this time in the myriad pots and pans, yet I still maintain that it is the womanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s duty to feed her family a healthy, nourishing meal. That said, it just takes a lot more to make a milchig supper truly satisfying. Soups are the perfect starter to complete a meal. I bring this variety of light summer soups, very different from my ordinary hearty vegetable ones, to enhance your recipe collection all year round.

CHERRY SOUP

I like to prepare a fruit soup for shalosh seudos when Tisha b’Av fast falls on Sunday. This is a great choice.

6 ripe pears 4 Granny Smith apples 4 large plums, preferable dark 6 apricots 4 large peaches 1 ½ cups sugar (It’s very hard to give an exact sugar amount, as sweetness depends on the ripeness of the fruit. Feel free to adjust accordingly.)

2 lbs. cherries 1. Place cut fruit (except for cherries) into an 8-quart pot. Fill ¾ with water. Add sugar. Cook for 1 ½ hours and blend.

• You can also substitute the cherries with some fresh fruit, which you should add to the pot after the soup is blended, and then cook for additional half hour.

For many generations, both present and past, a bowl of soup served to express love and warmth to family and strangers by the Yiddishe Mama. My grandmother accomplished that while growing up in war-torn Siget; as a young child, she would stand on a stool to stir a huge pot of soup which her grandmother would put up early each morning, and the poor and the refugees knew that at the Drummers they’d be served a warm plate of soup at all hours.

• For a delicious dairy version, take 8 oz. sour cream, pour in 1 cup of liquid from the soup, blend, and slowly pour back into pot.

Go ahead, make some extra, and if you look around, you’ll surely find someone in need to enjoy it.

2. Add halved and pitted cherries and cook for an additional 15 minutes. • If you don’t have time to pit the cherries, you can substitute the fresh cherries with two glass jars of cherry compote. Adjust water and sugar accordingly.

3. Serve cold.

PEA SOUP WITH DUMPLINGS

This soup is simple to make and very much enjoyed. If you don’t have time to make the dumplings, serve with croutons.

SOUP 3 onions, cut into chunks 5 cloves garlic 2 potatoes, diced 2 lbs. frozen peas

½ tsp. White pepper 3 T. kosher salt DUMPLINGS 1 cup flour 3 eggs

3 T. water 3 T. oil ½ tsp salt ¼ tsp. baking powder 1 pinch of pepper

1. In an 8-quart pot, saute onions and garlic for 10-15 minutes. 2. Add potatoes and peas. Fill the pot ¾ with water. Bring to a boil. Cook for 30 minutes. 3. Blend with immersion blender. 4. Mix ingredients for dumplings and drop into boiling soup. Cook additional 15 minutes. SHORTCUT: Place dumpling batter into quart-size Ziploc bag. Snip off one corner and squeeze dumplings directly into soup. Cut corner according to desired thickness of dumpling.

GARDEN TOMATO SOUP

This is the ultimate summer soup. It is much lighter and very different tasting than any tomato-sauce based soup. It has a unique blend of flavors. When served as part of a dairy meal, our family enjoys it sprinkled with some mozzarella cheese.

My neighbors held an impromptu backyard picnic the day I made this soup, and its interesting crimson color piqued everyone’s interest. I served them tastingsize servings and had a unanimous vote in favor of this creation joining my recipe column.

2 large white onions, finely diced 3 cloves garlic, diced ¼ cup oil ½ cup brown sugar 5 lbs. tomatoes (approximately 6 large beef size

or 16 plum size) 2 red peppers 3 T. kosher salt ½ tsp. cinnamon ¾ tsp. white pepper 10 cloves (Place the cloves onto a square piece

of parchment paper, 6x6”, fold it into a parcel shape, tie with white thread, and prick tiny holes with a toothpick or sharp knife to allow flavors to permeate the soup.)

1. Saute onion and garlic in oil until translucent. 2. Chop tomatoes and peppers in fruit processor, until they break down into small pieces. Do not allow to blend completely. 3. Add to pot, along with sugar and spices. Allow to simmer for 15 minutes. 4. Fill pot ¾ with water. Bring to boil and cook for ¾-1 hour. 5. Don’t let the cloves sit more than an hour in the soup, as the flavor will intensify.

BAGEL SHOP SOUP

This soup, with its superb mix of blended and cubed vegetables makes for an amazingly textured, flavorful bowl of goodness. It is very filling yet light, because it contains no dried beans, making it the perfect repast for breaking your fast.

My sister treated me to lunch from a local bagel shop while I was on convalescence with my now sixteen-year-old daughter. This soup was one which I had to recreate.

¼ cup oil 2 medium onions 1 potato 3 cloves garlic ½ small knob celery

3 green squash 2 sweet potato 1 bag carrots 1 red pepper 1 tray checked celery

16 oz. frozen peas 3 T. kosher salt ¾ tsp. white pepper

1. Cut the following vegetables into chunks and place in a heated 8-quart pot with the oil, and saute. Onions Potato 1 ½ squash ½ bag of carrots Garlic cloves Knob celery 1 sweet potato 2. Dice remaining squash, sweet potato, and red pepper, and slice remaining carrots and celery. Place in mesh cooking bag, and set over vegetables in pot. Cook for 20 minutes. 3. Add water, filling pot ¾. Bring to a boil. Cook for 30 minutes, until vegetables are soft. 4. Remove bag of vegetables. Blend the soup in the pot. Then, open the cooking bag and drop the contents along with the bag of peas into the pot. 5. Season with salt and pepper and cook for an additional 15 minutes.

KHAN-GATE AND THE TRUMP-REPUBLICAN RELATIONSHIP As we mentioned last week, one of the speakers at the Democratic National Convention was Khizr Khan, the father of a US Army Captain who died in Iraq. In an interview following the convention, Trump was asked for his reaction to Khan’s speech at the convention which criticized Trump, and Trump reacted by attacking Khan with the insinuation that his wife Ghazala, who was on stage with him, was not allowed to speak because of their religion. He went on to claim that Khan was put up to speak by the Clinton campaign and wasn’t there from his own free will, and said he didn’t have a right to attack him. The response was immediate, both from the general public who was overwhelmingly outraged, as reflected in the polls, as well as Republican leadership, who distanced themselves from the comments, reiterating again that they did not agree with Trump on all issues. Following this upheaval, in another interview, Trump made matters worse by refusing to endorse House Speaker Ryan, and Senators McCain from Arizona and Kelly Ayotte from New Hampshire, who are up for reelection and are currently in a primary contest. He finally relented to pressure and did, in fact, endorse them on Friday, but these incidents did nothing to help the image of a party divided. It is,

of course, in Trump’s best interest to maintain a Republican majority in the House and Senate for him to be able to pass any legislation or appointments through Congress, were he to win the White House. Candidates for president and Congress from the same party usually work hand in hand campaigning for each other, trying to ensure that their supporters vote across the party line to give each other the advantage of carrying both the executive and legislative branch. Being that Trump is an outsider, it has been a difficult adjustment for the Trump Campaign and the party to work alongside each other, and as the last week has proven, they have not yet gotten past this unity problem.

CLINTON’S SHORT CIRCUIT The email scandal and the issue of trustworthiness has continued

to dog Hillary Clinton throughout this campaign. No matter their view on Trump, voters have had a hard time trusting Clinton and accepting her excuses for the use of a private email server. This past Friday, Hillary finally held a press conference, albeit for only a limited pool of reporters with questions that had been pre-approved by the moderator, and it became clear why she had avoided holding presses for a staggering 260 days. Clinton was asked about the discrepancy between how she and FBI Director Comey had presented her use of a private server. The question she was asked was, “This week you told two separate news organizations that FBI Director James Comey’s said quote, ‘My answers were truthful, and that what I said is consistent with what I have told the American people.’ That assertion, as you know, has been debunked by multiple news organizations, which point out

The next time you start a load of laundry, spare a thought for your great, greatgrandmother. She held a bar of hard soap in her own two hands, rubbing it with the clothes against a metal washboard over a tub of steaming hot water. In the next era, washing machines were introduced as a primitive invention, but promised legions of housewives and washerwomen a new era of relief from their heavy labor. With microprocessors and automatic everything, today’s washers and dryers bear little resemblance to their predecessors. Doing laundry is hardly the tedious chore it used to be, yet we never seem to get to the bottom of the laundry basket. Sigh. Remember, if you throw in the towel it will only make more laundry…

If it’s not your mother or grandmother, there is probably someone in your life who just seems to know all the tricks and hints to make laundry and clothing care easier. Well, if not easier, at least how to make it come out clean. A big part of our laundry problem is that we don’t always know how to wash certain items, which means they stay in the basket far longer than they should. Chances are, even if you’ve been doing laundry for longer than you can remember, you could still use some fresh pointers on how to wash your clothes efficiently. There’s more to washing your clothes than just

dumping them into the machine and adding detergent or fabric softener. To manage this essential and routine household chore with ease, you need a goof-proof laundry plan to extend the life of your wardrobe and keep your clothes from fading or shrinking. From food stains to leaky pen marks in your pocket, everybody stains their clothing from time to time. But stains aren’t just common annoyances; if you can’t get them out, they can cut short the life of otherwise perfectly nice (and sometimes expensive) apparel. The key to preventing yourself from throwing money out the window along with your stained clothes, is to learn how to tackle stains as soon as pos-

By Idy Swimer You did a laundry check before loading the washer and found some stains. Now what? Firstly, try to identify the source of the stain. The following are several remedies for specific stains. IN K STAIN S

sible with the right method. No matter the mark, the important rule to remember is to prevent the stain from setting. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Settingâ&#x20AC;? is an informal term that refers to the material forming a chemical bond with the fabric. At that point, it is effectively permanent. To keep your spills and spots from clinging to your dresses, shirts, and pants, treat stains with a pre-wash product. Examples of good pre-wash solvents, whether in gel or spray, are Shout or Zout. Fresh stains are easier to treat than caked-on stains, so act fast to avoid the spot from setting into the garment forever. If you are on the go, and do not have either a stain removal pen or wipe, or the proper solvent with you, treat the stain with water. Wherever you are, gently dab water onto the stained area with tissue paper until the stain is thoroughly saturated. Yes, it may be more visible with water dabbed on it, but it will prevent the stain from becoming permanent. It is a good idea to blot rather than rub to treat a stain. Blotting draws the stain away from the fabric, and rubbing pushes the stain into the fabric, damaging the fiber finish and the color of the fabric.

One of the most common laundry blemishes we are often confronted with are ink stains. They can happen at work, home, or school, and can really ruin a good outfit if not dealt with correctly. This combination will erase your ink stains stress free. Supplies needed: 2 parts whole milk to 1 part white distilled vinegar and a large bowl Directions: 1. Place your garment in a bowl that is deep enough to allow it to be covered by the mixture. 2. Pour the milk into the bowl, covering the stain completely. Add about half as much of the white vinegar. 3. Let the garment soak overnight to ensure that the ingredients have time to work their magic. 4. Remove the garment. If you still see a slight trace of the ink stain, rub the fabric lightly to work out the stain. Toss the garment in the wash to remove the milk and vinegar. Good as new! CHOCOLAT E STA IN S Whether it is a fancy chocolate creation or a just a simple chocolate candy bar, chocolate is perfection â&#x20AC;&#x201D; that is, until it stains a good shirt, or any other garment. Chocolate is a combination stain; a bit of an oil stain, a bit of a dye stain. Start by using a dull knife or the edge of a spoon to lift away any chocolate solids. Do not rub the stain with a cloth or napkin because that will only send it deeper into the fabric, and make the stain harder to remove. Once the solids are removed, pour milk directly onto the stain to completely saturate it. Let it sit for several hours. Launder. If the stain is still visible, you can further soak it in milk with a combination of OxiClean as well. Launder.

RESCUE REMEDY FOR LAUNDRY STAINS 1. Today is the day to tackle all those set-in stains. The first step is to have your ammunition ready. Mix the following recipe: 2. In a small bowl of hot water, place 3 teaspoons of OxiClean powder, and a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide. Allow it to bubble up. You can pour this mixture into a spray bottle or leave in the bowl. 3. Apply to stains and let it sit for a few hours. As a precaution, you can test it on an inconspicuous area first. 4. Once you have given it time to settle in, launder as usual. Note: the amount of detergent is approximate and should be adjusted according to the stain. This remedy is effective for many types of stains including blood stains, fruit spots, and old, set-in stains. T I P S FOR REMOVING OIL-BASED E NA M EL, ART, OR MODEL PAIN T Oil-based paint must be removed from clothes while it is wet. If it dries, it is nearly impossible to remove. So, keep it wet until you can start cleaning. If the paint label lists a specific paint thinner to use, start with that or some turpentine. Working from the back of the fabric, place the stain over a thick pad of paper towels or old white rags. Wet the area with paint thinner and scrape the area with an old spoon or scrub brush to force the paint out. Keep changing the paper towels underneath as paint is absorbed into the towels. Be patient; this will take time. Once the paint is removed, saturate the area with liquid detergent and work it in well. Submerge the stained area into the hottest water temperature recommended for the fabric and let it soak overnight. Scrub again with some detergent, and launder as usual. L AU N D RY DETERGENT POD POISON IN G In the past few years, doing laundry has become a little easier with preportioned detergent pods. Just throw in a packet, and out comes perfectly cleaned clothes. But unfortunately, the story doesn’t end there. According to a new study, poison control calls regarding laundry detergent pods and young children have increased by a large percentage. Many families don’t realize how toxic these highly concentrated laundry pods are. The thin wrapping of the packets makes it easy for children to bite and consume the contents, and critics have suggested that they look too much like candy or teething toys The safest way to prevent any detergent poisoning is to keep detergent up, away, and out of sight. If you do opt for laundry pods, make sure it’s locked in a high cabinet. In case of an emergency, contact the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222.

Remember, if you throw in the towel it will only make more laundry… There are several important things to remember before placing garments to wash. 1. Always check for and pretreat stains. 2. Perform pocket checks. Place a small bowl by the washer as a visual reminder to give each garment a once-over prior to loading. 3. Zip it up and fasten those Velcros. In this way they will be less likely to snag another fabric or themselves. 4. Turning clothes inside out will preserve the fabric of the garment. 5. In addition to separating clothes into piles of whites, lights, darks, and delicates, wash heavily soiled items separately to avoid transferring stains. 6. Once your clothes have washed, check all laundry before putting it into the dryer to see if all stains are gone. The heat of the dryer can make a stain permanent. Make it a habit to follow these steps every time you wash to reduce the stress of laundry care. wash soak can have numerous benefits. Add ½ to a full cup of vinegar to a bowl of water. Add your new garment. This will help neutralize allergenic chemicals that new clothes may have been treated with, and stop colors from bleeding and fading. You can also use a vinegar rinse to help break up yellow perspiration stains, especially on whites. To make this rinse, simply fill your washing machine with water (using the “soak” function) and then add ½ cup of vinegar. Your pre-wash soak should take about 30 minutes. Don’t forget to drain the soak before starting the wash. 2. Main Wash Cycle Add ½ cup of vinegar to your regular wash cycle to help get rid of heavy odors, such as body odor or mold. You can also add 1 to 2 tablespoons of vinegar to lightly soiled whites as a soft bleaching substitute. If you live in an area with hard water, you can add ½ cup of vinegar to help soften it. 3. Rinse Cycle The rinse cycle is where adding vinegar can be most productive. Add 2 or 3 tablespoons to a load

The fresh aroma of chocolate cake did nothing to still the pangs of nervousness in my stomach. My five-year-old had filled her birthday cake order, leaving me with the task of shaping it into a number five. Nothing else would do. There was only one person who could save me from this mess, my friend Goldi. I reached for the telephone. “Hi, is this Goldi, the cake decorator?” I asked. Goldi responded with a laugh. After laying down my daughter’s impossible demand, I listened to her infamous tale of woe: her mountains of laundry that kept growing. I got the hint. Ten minutes later, I was at her house. With my chocolate cake in her skillful hands, I headed in my hiking boots to her laundry room. I got to work, separating the large items from the smaller ones, shaking loose socks clinging to linens and towels, and hanging shirts. My arms’ ache was rewarded with Goldi’s presentation of my chocolate cake in a number five shape. I thanked her lavishly, but she did not reciprocate my gratitude. Instead, with a sullen face, she asked me what happened. “What happened?” I asked back. “All I still have to do is frost the cake and pipe your daughter’s name — and you didn’t… I mean the laundry… it isn’t started yet!” I eyed her in silence. I knew that explaining the ease of folding sorted laundry over the unsorted would go right over her head. If only she would have sorted everything as she took them out of the dryer or before she put things into the wash. “Don’t worry,” I appeased her. “I’ll finish it.” She lightened up. After giving her the exact spelling of my daughter’s name, I resumed my task. Soon there were five budding rows of folded laundry on the bed. She eyed them suspiciously. “Why five?” she asked. “This is Tatty’s laundry, Mommy’s, the boys’, the girls’, and the baby’s,” I answered as I pointed to each. She did not smile. “What’s with the pile of unfolded socks?” “It is easier to sort, match, and fold when all the socks are together.” She raised her eyebrows. “Thanks,” she finally mumbled, remembering her manners. I stepped out her front door with a lavishly

decorated number-five cake, annoyed at Goldi’s lack of appreciation. By the next morning, I was a more understanding laundry hill climber. I was going to refrain from invading on her territory, and do her laundry her way. I learned from her how to roll towels instead of folding, fold shirts instead of hanging, and hang nightgowns instead of folding. We spent a few more laundry sessions together, and to my great pleasure, her laundry hill slowly crumbled into small pebbles. A year went by and my daughter’s’ birthday was approaching again. I picked up the telephone to call Goldi.

“Have any laundry for me to do?” I asked. She laughed. “No, thanks to you, my laundry is all folded!” “Great,” I said, “so could you decorate a number six birthday cake?” Ten minutes later, I was at her house. With my sponge cake in her skillful hands, I headed to view the miracle of folded laundry in Goldi’s house. On the bed was a sole basket filled with folded goods. I eyed it suspiciously. “Why the basket?” I asked “To deliver all the laundry to their place with one trip,” she answered. I raised my eyebrows. “What’s with this pile of unfolded teeshirts and sweaters?” “I discovered an easy method

of folding them in a department store, I wanted to share it with you.” Laying a tee-shirt facedown on the bed, she brought the two sleeves together in a straight line, towards the center of the back, so the two cuffs met. After folding the bottom up towards the top, she placed it in my hand for my scrutiny. “Wow, it comes out so much flatter than the way I do it.” I was impressed. It was worth the humbling experience of accepting the fact that Goldi had surpassed me in the laundry arena.

CCHF WORLD-WIDE TISHA B’AV EVENT: Bringing Healing and Sholom to Jews Across the Globe

The son was so angry at his parents that he couldn’t forgive them. He was already an adult, living in a city far from his parents. He never spoke to them. The parents were so angry at their son. They were not going to be the ones to apologize. The grudge lived on, each day adding a little more bitterness to each of their lives. Tisha B’Av arrived. The parents decided to attend the World-Wide Event. In a city far away, the son also decided to attend the Event. The same words, spoken by Rabbi Ephraim Eliyohu Shapiro, entered their hearts: “The one who is mevater wins. Let bygones be bygones.” Over and over, Rabbi Shapiro hammered home his message. Not knowing that his son had heard the very same message, the father decided that the time had come. The estrangement was too costly, turning what should be a joyful bond into a dark abyss. He arrived home, picked up the phone and called his son. The son could barely believe his ears when he picked up the phone and heard the long-lost but familiar voice of his father. His heart began racing and tears sprung to his eyes. “Let bygones be bygones,” he heard echoing in his mind. This was what he had silently prayed for as he heard Rabbi Shapiro’s words. “There’s been so much pain between us,” his father said softly. “We can’t undo what’s done, but I can tell you that Mommy and never wanted to cause you pain. And any pain we caused, we’re truly sorry for. We always love you and we just want to be a family again.” The son forgave with all his heart and asked forgiveness for his own mistakes and misdeeds. In two households, the burden of years of strife lifted like a boulder off the top of a well. Now, the refreshing life-

giving spring of love could flow. As the father and son re-entered each other’s lives during that conversation, they both discovered the inspiration for their mutual move toward sholom. They had both heard Rabbi Shapiro’s words: Let bygones be bygones. Both had been where they needed to be, among thousands of fellow Jews at the Tisha B’Av Event, where inspiration and healing could finally hit home. The Tisha B’Av Event has become a powerful force in healing rifts and stopping feuds in communities throughout the world. It is not only the inspiration for people torn by estrangement and machlokes to make sholom, but the actual venue for many of these reconciliations as well. Gathering together with fellow Jews in 700 sites, in 16 countries around the world, gives special power to the speakers’ inspiring yet sensible words. People who have been harboring a little grudge have sought each other out after the event. Sometimes they say “I’m sorry.” Sometimes they just give that extra-friendly smile that lets the other person know the air is clear between them. “Nowadays on Tisha B’Av, you can sit all day on the computer and watch speeches,” says one attendee. “But nothing brings home a real feeling of ahavas Yisrael like being together with other Jews, and knowing that all over the world, Jews are hearing the same words. There’s a real sense of purpose people have when they leave the Event.” This year, that sense of purpose is summarized by the Event’s title: “Opening the Door: The Power of Ahavas Yisrael to Unlock the Geulah.” The message will be brought home in two different programs, each featuring world-renowned speakers.

Something Is Alive in Our Attic! By Itta Shayowitz When one moves to Monsey, it is imperative to understand that one is essentially moving into the forest. Now this is not necessarily a bad thing. I, for one, have found living in the wilderness to be very educational. Such as the time my five-year-old came home from kindergarten informing me about which species of trees we have in our backyard based on the leaves that have fallen. He said his morah taught him all about it in preschool that day. I’m pretty sure they didn’t teach us that in kindergarten back in Boro Park! But it’s not just about the beautiful trees in our backyard. As everybody in Monsey knows, the forests are full of many different types of wild creatures. Some are friendly. Others… not so much. Some mind their own business, while others decide to take up permanent residence in your home. So one Friday night, my husband went off to shul and I was putting the children to bed, when suddenly I heard a loud thump. And how that THUMP made me JUMP! (Dr. Seuss, anyone?) I soon realized that there was something inside my house, and it wasn’t the kids who were tucked away in bed or the baby who had fallen asleep in my arms. I tried my best to stay calm and collected and not to shriek on the top of my

lungs — which is what my inner sixteen-year-old self really wanted to do. As the banging continued, I remained completely silent, listening to the noise, while at the same time silently willing it to stop and just go away. It took a few seconds for me to realize it was coming from the storage room in the attic. But once I did, I calmed down significantly. At least this “thing” wasn’t in my bedroom! I convinced myself that whatever it was must be stuck up there and couldn’t possibly come inside my house. I remained totally calm… Well, totally calm until the minute my husband arrived home from shul. That was when I finally gave myself permission to totally freak out. He was still wearing his hat and jacket when I ran towards him and

yelled, “SOMETHING’S ALIVE IN OUR ATTIC!” “Umm, Good Shabbos to you, too,” was his response. I had married a level-headed man, it was true. But at that moment I was wondering whether he was just a bit too level-headed. Either way, he informed me that there was really not much to do about this until after Shabbos was over, so we sat down that Friday night to our Shabbos seudah with some really unusual background “music.” By Shabbos day, the thumping had subsided considerably, but we did hear it occasionally. We patiently waited until after Havdalah to call an exterminator who could come and get that “thing” (as we fondly called it) out of our house and out of our lives. Dovid was still in middle of saying “a gutte voch,” while I was already dialing my mother-in-law’s number. She picked up the phone on the second ring and be-

The best way to get your answer on a specific brand is to ask advice of an independent salesperson or aromatherapist who deals with all brands, since quality can vary tremendously from company to company. Some companies claim their synthetic aroma-infused oil provides medicinal benefits. Additionally, the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) developed guidance policies to promote the responsible commerce of herbal products, so you can look out for AHPA compliant companies. Some companies have external monitoring by experts in the field as additional quality control. Does aromatherapy have any side effects? Side effects are extremely rare. Sometimes individuals can experience very mild nausea, headaches, or allergic reactions. What type of license/schooling is required for an aromatherapist? Aromatherapists in the United States currently don’t require a license. Do your homework well, and ask for references before visiting an aromatherapist. Many aromatherapists are trained in other forms of therapy or healing systems (such as massage or chiropractic, etc.) which does require licensure. CRAZY AMERICANS WASH UP It is said that Eretz Yisroel is acquired through difficulty. While I knew that this applies to those who choose to make their home in the Promised Land, I was surprised to learn that it applies to vacationers as well. It was supposed to be the ideal vacation, spent in the holiest place on earth, at one of the holiest times of the year. We’d booked tickets for motzei Yom Kippur to take us to our Sukkos destination in Eretz Yisroel. Aside from the kedusha that permeated the air, though, our trip was not what we’d expected. Right from the start we bumped into all kinds of mishaps It’s hard to even tell you the highlights of luckless-ness, for they are many. I could tell you about the near-deathly allergy attack on the plane. I could tell you about slicing my leg open the day after we’d arrived. Or the asthma attack and subsequent explosion of our American nebulizer when plugged into a Israeli outlet. (Yes, we used a converter.) I could share with you how I gasped for breath six flights up, and that it took my husband six tries before he found someone with Hatzolah’s number. Upon arrival, the medic took my husband, and they sped off to the pharmacy on his motorcycle because he didn’t know how to use the outdated oxygen tank he’d brought. (Yes, oxygen tank — not nebulizer.) Only halfway back did my husband realize that he’d left his wife alone, struggling to breathe. Baruch Hashem I was

When taken to a medically licensed doctor, her swollen leg was diagnosed as an “allergy” for which she was prescribed hydrocortisone cream. We could discuss the emergency root canal that took place on our second day of Yom Tov (while Yom Tov was already over in Eretz Yisroel), which allowed the dentist to work on my husband’s mouth. Instead of being in shul, my husband spent the day in agony, lying in a dental chair as per the psak we received. But those adventures are not for today. No, today I’d like to talk about something more mundane: our laundry and sponga adventures. It was Erev Yom Tov when our laundry pile had grown large

enough to tackle. With a oneyear-old, we knew we’d have to throw in a load or two before Yom Tov began. Though the machine seemed quite small and rather outdated, we had confidence that it would do the job, and I shoved a load of essentials into the machine before heading out to stock up on Yom Tov supplies. Not knowing exactly how Israeli washing machines worked, I guessed and spun the panel, hoping that I’d chosen the correct temperature setting. The truth is, the American woman I’d swapped countries with for Yom Tov had given me a quick rundown over the phone, but I hadn’t imagined it’d be so complicated, and had only listened with half an ear. Four hours later, I returned to the apartment, expecting to find a clean load of clothing that I’d quickly toss in the dryer — something I was told was a luxury in Eretz Yisroel. When I tried to open the door, however, I was shocked to find it locked. Hard. No matter how I tried to push or pull, that door wouldn’t budge. In a panic, I called my husband to the machine, and he

bent down to look inside. There was still water and soap suds bubbling inside. The machine, four hours after beginning, was mid-cycle. “Oh no! It’s almost the z’man! I have to have clean clothing! What will the baby wear?!” I couldn’t handle the thought of having our most vital pieces of clothing stuck mid-cycle for the duration of Yom Tov. “Get that door open!” Good husband that he is, Mr. Door-Opener grasped the handle, and ripped. Ripped the whole door off. Well. Hmmm. That wasn’t exactly what I meant. Now it was time to really panic. We had just broken the machine! If that weren’t bad enough, the front-loading washing machine was steadily belching out a mixture of warm water and soap bubbles. The floor was several inches deep in suds. “We’ll pay for the machine. For now, sponga!” my husband declared with a smile, the everhappy man proceeding to push, push, push the water out of the small apartment and toward the

balcony’s sponga hole in our first attempt to wash the floor. Beginning to see the humor in the situation, I started giggling, though several minutes later that giggling was interrupted by a frantic pounding on the door. Opening up, we were bombarded by the Israeli landlady who pantomimed her way through a thickly-accented dialogue. “Rabbi, Big Rabbi! Tolna Rebbe. Sukkah l’matah. No sponga! Rabbi sukkah mayim, mayim me’od!” Snapping out of her panic, she realized that she could speak Yiddish with us, and proceeded to tell us that when the house was constructed, they’d mistakenly built our apartment’s sponga hole directly on top of the first floor’s balcony. And that balcony just happened to belong to the Tolna Rebbe. And his table just happened to be beneath our sponga hole. And it just happened to have been set for Yom Tov. To say we were mortified is an understatement. To say that we rectified the situation would be a lie. Little did we realize that the

o n e and only air conditioner in the apartment was a leaky one, and it would drip onto the balcony where it was positioned, you guessed it, straight into the Rebbe’s sukkah — all Yom Tov long. When Yom Tov was over, the landlady once again came upstairs, furiously demanding to know why we’d been doing pouring water onto the Rebbe’s head all Yom Tov. When we explained about the air conditioner drip, her eyes jumped out of her head, and asked us if we’d left it running the entire day. “Of course,” was our reply. “It’s hot. Over 90°. What else should we do?” “Crazy Americans,” was her reply. And we didn’t disagree, because after all that we’d been through, it did sort of seem that way...

Buying a Home When One Lives a Long Distance Away

by Ann Zeilingold Bracha and Shlomo live in Milwaukee. Shlomo got a new job in New York. How does a family navigate a long-distance house move? Do they purchase right away? How do they look for homes? How do they make offers, do inspections, negotiate contract terms, navigate the long-distance move, time their movers etc… And what about Shaindy and Arye? They live in Eretz Yisroel and are moving back to America. What should their first steps be? Every time a family makes a move, whether it’s from a rental to a newly purchased home or even a “move up” move, from one home to another, or a “downsizing” move, moving into something smaller as the family needs change, the stresses and emotions and logistics are tough. As I write this article, I am personally in the middle of a “move.” My father has moved in with me, causing my housing needs to change and therefore a decision to move was made. The thought of selling my home in time to buy the next home just scares me, and I am in the business! So if it is hard for a family moving from one home to another within the same community, how does one handle a long-distance move, where most likely, the largest financial decision a family is making is occurring across a continent or an ocean? Ricky Drillman, realtor at Realty Teams in Pomona has handled multiple clients making the move from Eretz Yisroel to the Monsey community. She says, ”All of my clients come referred to me by family and friends, so there is that layer of trust.” She shared with me a story of a

client who didn’t even see the house personally until the closing. “I had sold other members of their family homes and when this family was moving from Eretz Yisroel to America, they naturally called me.” I previewed homes for them, and when one seemed perfect, I sent pictures and videos. A close family member actually looked at the house for them. “It boils down to a system of trust.” I handled everything for them, from recommending the attorney, the inspector, and I followed up on the mortgage for them. It was only at the walk -through, on the day of the closing, that the family purchasing the house actually got to see it. Robin Kessler, realtor in Brooklyn, NY, discussed with me the additional handholding and trust required when handling a long-distance move. “One of my first clients was a family coming from California. Not only did I spend hours on the phone discussing different homes, I also handled things that clients normally would do themselves, if they were here. For

example, I met with the inspector, negotiated with contractors to get estimates for repairs.” Sharon shared that her client came in for viewings, but once just the husband came and once just the wife. “I had to balance both of their needs in finding them a home.” Sharon said that she previewed homes for sale to show to her clients. “I relied heavily on emails, and if no video tours were available, I actually videoed the homes myself to send them to the clients to see.” Reeta Casey of Orlando, Florida, Broker Owner of Stockworth Realty Group, Orlando, Florida,has a whole division in her company just for relocation clients. “We don’t just find them homes, we pick them up from the airport, book their stay in a hotel.
