With four full days home from school and cheder due to the snow, my kids were getting pretty restless. I dug through the past issues of The Monsey View on Sunday to find the snow activities you published. We the dye idea wasn’t an option, because we don’t have food coloring in our house and a letter-writer already cautioned against it… We couldn’t do the upside-down snowman, because well, I wasn’t planning on going outside with kids... The potato head was cute, but we decided on the snow ice cream. The kids were giggling when I brought in freshly scooped snow and they mixed it up! It had the texture of slush but the taste of ice cream. Next time, we will mix flavored applesauce with it to make red slushes. Thanks for the fun! A Mother of Kids Who Love Snow

SOME FOOD TIPS Thank you for the fish recipes. I am always looking for a change, for when my regular recipe gets boring. I wanted to share that since I baked my fish in Palisades parchment bags, it has never been dry. You can bake it without mayonnaise — fat free, and the taste is still moist and delicious. You can fit 2–3 slices into each bag, but remember to keep it sealed until you serve it. Regarding MSG, thanks for a well-researched article. Let’s make a demand for healthier snacks and nosh. When the companies will see that we are ready to compromise a little taste for snacks that are a lot healthier, they will hopefully switch over. A good idea would be to publish a list of MSG-free snacks, so that mothers who are too busy to analyze labels, but would rather buy MSG-free nosh can have a guide. This would also create a ruach for positive change! Thank you, B. Schwartz

NOT EVERYONE NEEDS TO DIET

ADVENTUREBUG

I am a fourteen-year-old girl in our community, a typical teenager who enjoys hanging out with her friends and family. I am an avid reader of The Monsey View, and there is one thing that troubles me immensely. Most people are familiar with what an eating disorder is. It is unfortunately very common nowadays, even in the Yiddish world. Everyone wants to have the perfect body and the right looks and live a perfect life. But that is totally not reality. As you read this, you can guess that I have an eating disorder; correctly so. Luckily, I don’t have bulimia, but in the beginning, my parents thought I did. I wish I can say it is not so bad, but that would not be true. I positively abhor it. The daily thoughts in an eating-disordered head are torturous. It is one of the most difficult tests from Hashem, but I am trying my best to endure it. My plea to you is one thing; I know this magazine has a diet section and it’s totally okay. Some people in this world need to lose weight. But for the many people in this world who have a hard time eating foods, a section on dieting is the last thing they want to look at. Please don’t get me wrong. I am not telling you to omit the diet section. I just want to request of The Monsey View if it is possible for you to feature a column or publish a story to support people with eating disorders. It would be most constructive and very eye-opening to the Monsey community. This is a message to anyone who has an eating disorder of any type: If you are a boy or girl, grown up or not, it does not matter at all. For your sake, I beseech you to get help. It will be hard at first and you will have your ups and downs. I always have my ups and downs, but I want you to know the eating disorder can be conquered. In the very beginning of my therapy, it took me an hour and a half to eat a snack. I am sorry to mention if I wouldn’t have gotten help by now, I would practically not be living. It is very scary to comprehend how dangerous an eating disorder can be, but it can be true for someone who does not receive proper help. Most importantly, remember: The eating disorder is not your friend! Thank you, A Teenager Struggling with an Eating Disorder

I read the story in Masterplan about the egg-free kugel that was made just at the right time. Having been on an egg-free diet for a short period of time, and having tried baking potato kugel without eggs, I’d like to share with those who attempt it that adding some squash, onion and additional oil to the batter will result in a fluffier kugel. Onion, in fact, can be added to any potato kugel, to make the kugel really white, and squash to add a delicious flavor. L.S.

HELP FOR THE HELPER AND THE HELPED My heart is both broken and filled with light as I pen this letter. It is shattered to pieces over the plight of one young girl, who despite having two living parents, is essentially an orphan. This girl of only ten years was brought to our home because her parents were sadly unfit to raise her, and she was one terrible step away from being placed in foster care outside of our community. Baruch Hashem, my family was able to take her in, but we were at a loss as to how to raise this child. There were many questions that came up, like: How do we discipline this child without breaking her? How do we ensure her mental health and happiness after a difficult early childhood? What services are avail-

VOICEMAILS It sounds unbelievable… The esteemed Chatzos talmidei chachamim performed the Pidyon Reshash on my behalf – exactly four o’clock, New York-time.

At precisely four o’clock, our mazel seemed to have overturned. We closed a lucrative business deal, and one of our children gave us a real nachas surprise. The precision of the timing was uncanny…

able for children like this  — mentally stable, but emotionally distraught? How will we, a young kollel family, pay for another person to feed and clothe? And, just as importantly: What about our family? What if we need a break to recharge? Where can this girl go for a short while, so that we can continue caring for her with peaceful, loving hearts? These questions used to make our minds spin, worrying us to no end. But then we heard about Bayis L’Yeled, a Monsey organization that helps displaced children and the families that take them in. Not only do they provide guidance and chizuk, but they also help with childcare-related bills and helped us access available services. It truly was a lifesaver, both for our family and the child we took in, causing our hearts to be light once again. As told to: Basya Lev

I am a director at a girls’ school, and my kindergarten teacher called me with the concern that she was having trouble finding a substitute for the two weeks she was going to be away. She said she had tried a lot of people and nothing was working out. She did not know what else to do. I decided I would call my niece who used to run a playgroup; perhaps she would be able to recommend someone. She heard what I had to say and, after a moment of thought, said that she would be glad to do it. I was thrilled. With one phone call, the problem was taken care of and with someone who was experienced. Two weeks later, my sister’s friend called to tell me that she was talking to her neighbor and this neighbor was raving about the substitute teacher who was obviously experienced. She said her daughter looked forward to going to school each day. Once this person realized it was her friend’s daughter, she called up her friend to give her nachas. Then, she called me so I could also hear the positive feedback.

consume foods that are not only rich in healthy fats, but also full of antioxidants, minerals, vitamins and phytonutrients. Consume the following to stay youthful and energetic:

Becoming Weigh Smarter

A N T I O X I D A N TRICH TEAS: Green tea, black tea and white tea are rich in antioxidants called polyphenols, which protect your cells from aging. These teas are great for weight loss and general health as well. I especially like peppermint green tea, which is perfect for after meals. This option is excellent for digestion.

How to Age Healthfully It’s no secret that we all want to age healthfully, but what does this really mean? What can we do as part of our hishtadlus to age well? I’m not sure about you, but I believe that healthy aging means living to a ripe old age without being dependent on anyone. And while we can’t choose how many years we’ll live, we can make healthy choices to stay vibrant for as long as possible. In short, we need to put forth our best effort to lead healthy lives, whatever that means to each of us. Yes, I happen to know someone who ate an all-organic diet and didn’t make it to her fifties, and another person who ate processed foods and lived a long, full life. But does that really tell us anything? I don’t think so. According to a few studies, more and more people are living longer lives, but with a sharp increase in health problems. So where does that leave you? Well, I’ve put together some very helpful information to encourage healthy aging. If you happen to be 20 years old, then you can get an early start! The more healthy choices you make, the more you boost your chances of living an active, quality life. For preventative reasons, it’s important to start adopting healthy habits as soon as possible. You don’t need to wait until you start suffering from arthritis, diabetes, back pain or other common health issues! Admittedly, there is an aesthetic component to aging as well. If wrinkles are of concern to you, make sure to eat healthy fats like organic extra-virgin coconut oil, organic flaxseed oil and full-fat butter. If you’re worried about your waist, then it’s even more important that you incorporate these fats into your diet (while lowering your carbohydrate intake). When some people lose weight, it may seem as though they aged a decade — and this is usually because they are afraid of fat! If you want to lose weight and look younger, consuming healthy fats would be my first suggestion. Since aging is a natural process, as you get older your body will go through some complex biological functions. To make sure this transition is gradual, you’ll want to

WILD ALASKAN SALMON: Wild Alaskan salmon is full of anti-in flam mator y omega-3 fatty acids. It also contains a high level of vitamin D, which promotes strong, healthy bones and slows down the aging process. You will want to make sure that the fish is wildcaught. LEAFY GREEN VEGETABLES, BERRIES, TURMERIC AND GARLIC are rich in antioxidants as well.

Conversely, certain foods may speed up the aging process. Try to minimize your intake of the following options: REFINED SUGAR: Refined sugar promotes a process called glycation,

which damages cells and causes wrinkles. This is the top-rated food for speeding up the aging process. GRAINS: Grains are proinflammatory (if they’re not sprouted, that is). This leads to glycation as well. Consider buying sprouted bread or sprouting your own grains to optimize your health. At the very least,

try consuming grains in very small amounts. TRANS FATS AND HYDROGENATED OILS: These processed fats promote inflammation, which leads to unhealthy aging.

As long as you exercise regularly, get enough sleep and eat nutritious

foods, you are on the right track to aging healthfully. Consider picking up some anti-aging supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids, resveratrol, coenzyme Q10 and basic multivitamins as well. And most importantly, don’t forget to enjoy and appreciate every moment of your life!

More Poll Locations Coming to Alleviate Election Day Crowds in Monsey? (The Journal News) TWO NEW LOCATIONS may be added as polling places for school board elections, a move intended to shorten lines at the busiest voting sites in East Ramapo. Voting in school board elections is typically higher in East Ramapo than in other county locations. Last May, eleven percent of Ramapo Central’s registered voters came to cast their ballots and four percent of

those eligible to vote turned out in Nyack. East Ramapo, however, saw twenty percent of its voters showing up to vote in the school board elections. Changing the boundaries of the district’s polling locations would allow for two new polling locations to be added: one at Elmwood Elementary School in the Robert Pitt area and the other at Bais Shifra Miriam

on Highview. Currently, the busiest voting locations in East Ramapo are the Avir Yaakov Girls’ School, Ramapo High School, Kakiat Elementary School and Spring Valley High School. The plan will be discussed at the March 14th school board meeting and, if approved, would be in place for the school board elections to be held this May.

Governor Cuomo to the Rescue as Williamsburg Man Gets Stuck on Snowy Roadway (Hamodia/VIN News) A WILLIAMSBURG MAN who got stuck on the side of a Westchester highway on his way to yeshiva in last week’s snowstorm got the shock of his life when a man who stopped to help him turned out to be none other than Governor Andrew Cuomo. Both Noach Fisher and his nephew, Moshe Goldberger, were driving on the Taconic State Parkway on Thursday afternoon during the snowstorm when a car in front of them stopped short. Goldberger turned his car toward the shoulder to avoid hitting the sliding car, ending up in a ditch on the side of the road. Fisher pulled over as well and the two tried unsuccessfully to get Goldberger’s car back on the road. Both a state trooper and a New York State HELP truck were unable to get the vehicle out of the ditch and approximately 30 minutes later, a group of three black SUVs pulled over and insisted on helping. One of the passengers in the SUV got out of the car and got to work ty-

HYPERCRITICAL

QUESTION: My seven-year-old daughter is very self-conscious. She is always worried that people don’t like her or that she is not being treated fairly. She is very often negative, and it really affects her life and everyone around her. She’s also hypercritical and can ask me, “Mommy, what’s wrong with you?!” when I do or wear something she doesn’t like. Why is my child behaving this way?! CHAIM WINTER, LCSW, RPT RESPONDS: Kids need to have a great environment in order for them to grow and be nourished, and we, as parents, have the natural ability to provide this environment for our kids. Sometimes, though, children are exposed to traumatic events that may be a one-time event or an ongoing form of trauma. Trauma can come in many forms, such as bullying that is being experienced, a loss of a loved one, some form of abuse or even just a life upheaval that naturally occurs through a move or some other drastic change in a child’s life. I suspect that something traumatic happened to your child. While I have no way of blindly knowing exactly that the situation was that causes her to constantly act this way, I can help you understand why she continues to act this way. During trauma, the “fight-flight-or-freeze”

56 / THE MONSEY VIEW

reflex becomes activated in the brain, causing stress hormones to be released and the body to shift itself into survival mode. During said survival mode, the central nervous system becomes dysregulated, with a flood of cortisol (a stress hormone) killing off cells in the hippocampus of the brain, rendering it underactive. Another part of the brain, the amygdala, is responsible for survival-related threat identification, and becomes overactive during trauma. When that happens, the person becomes hypervigilant and on-guard, feeling that danger is right around the corner. These changes in the brain work in our favor during true crises and trauma, helping us to survive honestly dangerous situations. The problem occurs when the brain and body do not switch into recovery mode after a traumatic event. Unfortunately, this happens to some kids (and adults, too!). Instead of decreased stress hormones and reactivation and deactivation of both over- and underworking areas of the brain, some people just stay stuck in survival mode. And that’s not a good thing. Kids who are stuck in survival mode with a dysregulated central nervous system often perceive threats all around them, making them both hypervigilant and hypersensitive. They might frequently experience sudden bursts of rage or just out of the blue dissolve into a puddle of tears. They might have nightmares or insomnia, and often feel unloved and uncared for. They develop anxiety, and worry over things that are not perceived as perfect (read: safe), and they sometimes transfer that anxiety, together with blame, onto other people. In your case, your daughter’s brain is interpreting your “failure” to meet what she feels are the expectations of the world as a threat, a danger to her personal well-being. Her brain is sending messages to her that if

you are not “perfect,” you — and by extension, she — will be open to the dangers of the world. Such children get very frustrated when things don’t go exactly as planned. Can you blame them? Their minds are telling them that it’s dangerous! You might also experience a general, unspecified moodiness radiating from your child, while friends and teachers may never see that side of him or her. Outside of the home, children are generally more guarded, while at home, they feel safer and their emotional shields tend to drop. A healthy home, after all, is the child’s safe haven. When something is bothering a child, they may not be able to put it into words — but their actions will speak loudly. New behaviors like embarrassment, secretiveness or outbursts of anger are the child’s way of hinting that something is wrong in life. Our job, as parents and therapists, is to decipher the actual message from the behavioral cues, and help the child to work through whatever is bothering him or her. Using the right methods, we can help a child pull herself out of that detrimental survival mode she is stuck in, that causes her to act out. When done properly, play therapy is proven to help regulate the central nervous system, causing everything to get back on track. Stress hormones will go down, parts of the brain that should be active will wake up and parts that need to relax will calm down. Your child will finally feel at ease and be able to let down her guard to enjoy life without constant anxiety. It’s really amazing how our brains and body are connected, and how something so enjoyable as therapist-guided play can help your child be free from feeling that there is constant danger surrounding her. Are you ready to discover the power of play?

Kids First is home to Monsey’s most dynamic team of child health professionals. We’ve brought together the best and the brightest in OT, PT, Speech Therapy, Behavioral/Social Health, limud/kriah and general tutoring to help ensure your child’s best chance at leading a successful life. Part 2:

Quick Fixes

BY: RUCHY REESE It all began with a pimple. A few of them actually. Almost all imaginary. The smoothness of my skin meant the world to me, shallow to say. In reality, though, it wasn’t shallowness at all. It was low self-esteem and the desire to one day “make it.” All human beings view themselves with a microscope, carefully noting and harping upon any points of weakness. In my case, I’d felt myself rather socially challenged as a child; quiet and contemplative to a fault. Those were the years of my deepest poetry in which pieces were penned that could move the most burly of men to tears. My hands, as well, were gifted, and I spent hours every day sketching. And yet, my inner world of ideas and visions couldn’t seem to cross the boundaries of social acceptance, and I always felt the odd man out. Well, I would change that, I thought. I’d dress the same as the outgoing type of girls, I’d speak with the same word choices and inflections and I’d do whatever I could to fit in. I’d go from “who-cares-what-I-wear-aslong-as-I-have-something-good-to-read” to “put-together-and-outgoing.” As an older teen, I set out to remake myself into a round peg to fit the similarly shaped hole. No more squares for me. I’d focus more on externals and would thereby ensure that no one would ever dream me an introvert, an out-

sider. I would be, in a word: perfect. ***** “It’s a powerful drug,” the doctor told me, “but that’s what makes it so good. You won’t have to worry about your skin for years. It does, though, have a lot of side effects…” He then proceeded to list them for me, and handed me a big folder with bright red coloring, declaring the potential dangers. Potential Crohn’s disease, pancreatic disease, severe depression, psychiatric disorders, hearing impairment, damage to vision, increased risk of suicide… just to name a few. It was such a potent medication that I’d have to travel to Manhattan to take monthly blood tests during the six-month course of treatment. “And sometimes during the process, your legs will develop open sores and start bleeding. But it’s okay. I’ve a got a

medication to heal that.” The doctor then proceeded to hand me a tube labeled Vanos. “It’s a superpotent cortisone. The strongest topical you can get. Use it while you are on the Accutane; you’ll feel better.” And with that he sent me on my way. Young and naive, convinced of my own infallibility, I thought little of what I was agreeing to do to my body. True to the folly of youth, I felt invincible. Bad things could never happen to me! And besides, perfect skin? The tradeoff was invariably worth any discomfort I’d perhaps experience! And so, I went from being the girl who didn’t even own a bottle of Tylenol to the girl in search of the creams and potions of beauty, happily using whatever I was given. After all, Doctor knows best, right? ***** “What are you putting on your face?” I asked my husband of but a few days. “Dr. W.’s compound. It’s a hydrocortisone mixture for my eczema. Only one pharmacy in town makes it.” I shrugged and moved on, happy that he both looked and felt well. As for me, my Vanos cream had been packed away in the medication cabinet for a while, and my post Accutane skin was smooth; the weeping sores had long since healed. Eventually though, I developed an itchy finger or two from what I recall, and noting how well my husband’s eczema seemed to be under control, I helped myself to the tube of hydrocortisone he kept at home. Over time I began using more and more of it, sometimes even digging into the tub of Dr. W.’s compound, which was smooth like butter and felt great on my skin. For some reason, though, instead of getting better, the itchy, red skin seemed to spread. From one finger, it jumped to two hands, and from there to my face and the back of the knees. Now my husband and I were twins; two itchy people with an ever growing collection of cortisone. ***** “I can’t breathe,” I gasped. “The air is just not going in!” Rushing me to his allergist’s office, my husband begged the doctor to help me. “Well, it’s not asthma,” he pronounced, “because the air is coming out fine, and asthma is diagnosed on the exhale. I am not sure why you are have trouble breathing.” “What about prednisone?” my husband queried. “Every time I’ve had trouble breathing, that’s what I’ve been given and it really helps.” The allergist shook his head, saying he didn’t know if my doctor would allow it. A quick phone call, however,

Self Portrait Written at age 14 Today I drew a picture Unlike any other, With lines deep and bold, And others soft and shy; It was the picture of perfection And pleasing to the eye. All who beheld its view Pondered on its essence; They yearned to know its inner core And simply stared into its presence. And then they knew That they would never know, For ‘twasn’t but a picture, But a portrait of my soul.

The Forgotten Days of Youth Written at age 14 Childhood soul left behind; child still in body. Gaze within the eyes and soul — for they are both entwined, For deep within the age-old heart Lies the solemn truth: That once what was, Is no more — The Forgotten Days of Youth.

assuaged his fears. I was handed a prescription for oral cortisone which I used off and on for the next several months. Blissfully unaware of the dangers associated with prednisone, I took my pills whenever I felt I needed to and always felt fantastic afterwards. Any rashes would resolve, my skin would be smooth and white, breathing became effortless and I’d have boundless, youthful energy. I’d be the epitome of everything I was expected to be — though I was undoubtably short-tempered... Any time I ran out, the prescriptions were easy to fill; I just had to call a certain doctor and request it. I was never discouraged from frequent use. After all, what could be wrong with that little white pill? What could be wrong indeed...

BROWNIE FUDGE RECIPE FOR OVERSIZED COOKIE SHEET 9 eggs 4 ½ c. sugar 4 ½ sticks margarine 2 T. vanilla sugar 1 ½ tsp. baking powder 1 ½ c. Dutch processed cocoa 4 ½ c. flour ½ c.prepared coffee

RECIPE FOR STANDARD COOKIE SHEET SIZE 6 eggs 3 c. sugar 3 sticks margarine 1 ½ T. vanilla 1 tsp. baking powder 1 c. Dutch processed cocoa 3 c. flour ⅓ c. prepared coffee

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350°. 2. In a mixer fitted with a cookie hook, beat eggs, sugar and margarine, until margarine is fully broken down and forms a smooth consistency. 3. Add the rest of the ingredients. Mix, being careful not to overmix. 4. Pour into parchment paper-lined cookie sheet. 5. Bake the standard cookie sheet recipe for 30 minutes and oversized for 35 minutes. SEASONED CHEF: I try to refrain from using margarine in my everyday baking, but since mishloach manos tends to stay out for a while, I use margarine so it results in a hardier product. Feel free to substitute with oil. 1 stick margarine = 3.5 oz. oil

Decorating individually designed brownies are time-consuming and large quantities cannot be done at once, as glaze will set before you finish decorating them. Work with a small area at a time (approximately ¼ of a cookie sheet), and lightly mark squares before decorating the centers. It’s helpful to have a second pair of hands available.

SHREDDED HALVA Spread strands of readybought shredded halva over wet glaze. (Entire cake can be done at once.) Note: These will turn a bit sticky when frozen.

HALVA Cut Achva marble-flavored halva bar into ¼ inch strips. Spread glaze over brownie, and arrange halva strips diagonally, while lightly pressing into glaze.

Alternatively, chop desired toppings into small pieces, glaze cake, and scatter pieces over entire surface at once. Drizzle with chocolate.

SPRITZED CARAMEL

It’s best to glaze the cake at room temperature.

Use one Gedilla round caramel- or nougatflavored chewy toffee per brownie. (May be flattened slightly with rolling pin prior to glazing the brownie fudge.) Place in the center of brownie while glaze is wet, pressing in gently. Drizzle with melted baking chocolate.

CHOCOLATE GLAZE VARIETIES A ready bought chocolate glaze has a smooth, professional finish, but feel free to use any homemade variety or try: INGREDIENTS: 3 ½ c. confectioners sugar ⅓ c. cocoa ½ c. oil ½ c. warm water

DIRECTIONS: 1. In a large bowl, mix well until it is very smooth with absolutely no lumps remaining. The above recipe is enough to cover the oversized pan.

68 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 15, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Make sure that the toffees you are using are pareve.

RASPBERRY STICKS Slice chocolate raspberry sticks into thin slices. (I used Pardes chocolates.) Arrange three slices over each square while glaze is wet and drizzle with pink chocolate. Each 2-inch raspberry stick will decorate approximately 2 brownies.

TRI-CHIP In a container, mix 7 oz. dark chocolate chips, 7 oz. caramel chips, 7 oz. white chocolate chips of uniform size. Spread chocolate glaze over entire surface of brownie. Scatter over wet glaze, pressing chips lightly in. Then, melt 1 ½ oz. white chocolate and 1 ½ oz. dark chocolate in two separate sandwich bags and drizzle diagonally across the cake in opposite directions.

MINT ROUNDS Slice Pashkes mint rounds in half. Place one piece slightly off center of square while glaze is wet, put the other half overlapping on the chocolate, using melted chocolate to secure if necessary. Drizzle with melted white chocolate.

OREOS Chop chocolate sandwich cookies into approximately 1/3 inch piece. Glaze entire surface of cake and scatter cookies before it sets.

MINI MINTS Spread glaze over brownie. Scatter green and white mint lentils over wet glaze. Drizzle with green melted chocolate. Alternatively, use any color lentils to coordinate with your color scheme.

CARAMEL GLAZE VARIETIES I used a ready bought glaze. Feel free to use any homemade coffee glaze.

PECAN CHOCOLATE Place one pecan diagonally in the center of each square while glaze is wet. Spritz with melted baking chocolate.

CHOCOLATE-COVERED PRETZELS Break small chocolate-covered pretzels in half and arrange 3 halves slightly upright in the center of each square. Broken ends should be on the surface, with round edges toward the top. Shibolim has a great size; make sure to use pareve ones only.

CHOCOLATE COFFEE BEANS Glaze brownie and scatter coffee beans over glaze. Each square should have approximately 3 beans.

PEANUT GLAZE VARIETIES

GLAZED PEANUTS Scatter glazed peanuts over wet glaze and drizzle with melted white chocolate.

PEANUT GLAZE: 3 oz. peanut butter chocolate bar 3 oz white chocolate 3 T. simple syrup or corn syrup

VIENNESE CRUNCH

1 T. margarine

Coarsely chop Viennese crunch with a knife and scatter over wet glaze. Drizzle with melted black and peanut chocolate in opposite directions on a diagonal.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Melt all ingredients in a double boiler and spread over cake, while glaze is still warm. The above recipe should cover approximately a 9x13-area.

For beautiful presentation that’s simpler and more economical, prepare coffee, chocolate and vanilla glaze. Set aside a half a cup of each in a sandwich bag for decorating. Prepare 3 sheets of brownie and spread with coffee, chocolate and white glaze respectively. Drizzle with the two other colors that was reserved prior to glazing. If glaze hardens, place bag in warm water to melt.

BAKING PAN I was recently introduced to this extralarge baking pan, and boy am I enjoying it. At a whopping 15x21 inches, it has one and a half times the area of a standard cookie sheet, allowing for more squares with less edges. 18-inch parchment paper fits perfectly for the width. Note: This is the largest size pan to fit into a standard 30-inch oven.

Price: $9.50

SIX-WHEEL DOUGH CUTTER This useful gadget can be set up to size and will mark a cake for precise cutting. It is advisable to try it first on a plain cake, as you will need to learn to maneuver the wheels. Make sure to hold this gadget very steadily, so that it should not slide away.

DECIDING

to up the care of your relative or loved one by sending him or her to a facility or arranging for a home care provider is always a difficult decision to make and often a complicated transition to oversee. A significant amount of effort, a good deal of research and a dose of common sense are needed to ensure that the transition is smooth and ultimately beneficial. How do we decide which facility, nursing home or home care provider is the right one for our loved one? What kind of preparations are necessary to give us the confidence and foresight to make the right choice? And how do we ensure that our loved one is safe and content, once in different hands? CONSIDER “In order to minimize unnecessary time and effort on your part, first know what you’re looking for,” says Leibel Kenzer, administrator of a Preferred Healthcare nursing home in Michigan. “Every facility is varied, each offering its own set of accommodations and provisions. It’s best to prioritize on the few characteristics that are important to you and limit your search to a select few companies or facilities.” Another important factor to keep in mind is that different types of facilities and companies offer varying levels of care and intervention to cater to variant needs and levels of dependence. For example, it’s important to

80 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 15, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

differentiate between assisted living and residential living, and skilled care and custodial care, since the terms refer to different options of available care. Before limiting your search, you might want to ask yourself some of the following questions: • Are you seeking long- or short-term care? • Are you looking for a facility that is covered by Medicaid? • Are separate units that specialize in dementia essential? • Are you looking for a hospital-like or household-like facility? • Are facilities or companies that provide physical therapy a top priority?

RESEARCH Take advantage of the wealth of informational sources available. Reputable companies, such as Eldercare.gov, Cms.gov, the National Association for Homecare and Hospice, which can be visited online or contacted via telephone, are just a few examples of organizations designed for the purpose of making your search easier. One indispensable service their organizations and websites offer is a facility or company locator, which provides information on the accreditation and ratings of different facilities. Facilities that are covered by Medicaid or Medicare must be accredited and rated on a scale of two to five stars. Ratings are based on conditions such as the quality of care, staff-to-patient ratio and cleanliness of the facility. The organizations will also offer other pertinent information such as what services the facilities offer and how long the facility or company has been in business for. Another vital source of information often overlooked is an eldercare or a nursing home lawyer or a geriatric doctor local to the company or facility. A lawyer or doctor might have information that would otherwise be hidden from public knowledge, such as any past or recent court cases filed against a facility or company related to insurance coverage cases, and cases of abuse or neglect.

VISIT The importance of observing a facility firsthand can not be understated. By prearranging a visit or a tour of a facility, you’ll be able to put your knowledge, your five senses and your common sense to use, and get access to information not explicitly written out, but just as important. While visiting or touring, trust your senses to give you a complete picture of the facility. Pay attention to conditions such as the overall cleanliness of the halls, the smell, the look of the food and the sounds. For example, does the food look appetizing? Are there dust or cobwebs in the corners of the rooms? Are there any overwhelming odors that might be indicative of a cleanliness concern? Are there any residents calling for a nurse to use the bathroom without receiving a timely response? You can gauge a lot from the quality of care just by observing the staff members’ interactions. “Eavesdrop on the aides and nurses,” advises Cynthia Ramnarace of the AARP Bulletin. “Listen in to how the staff are interacting with each other. If they are rude to each other, they are going to be rude to your parent. Also pay attention to how they’re spending their time once the

82 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 15, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

charting and direct care has been finished from their unit,” adds Cynthia. “Are they gossiping with each other or taking time to sit with their patients?” “One surefire way to tell whether the facility is comfortably staffed and whether the staff is attentive,” adds Leibel Kenzer, “ is to keep your eye out on the call buttons that are in the halls. When you see a call light go on, how long does it take for a nurse to come and attend to the resident?” Another way to gauge the level of care is by observing the administrator. “A unit manager or administrator walking the halls is often a sign of a manager who is actively involved with the residents,” says Leibel. “It should ring alarm bells in your mind if the administrator or manager is never to be seen.” “Choose to make a surprise visit,” advises William Dorich, author of The Nursing Home Crisis. “This will allow you to observe the [facility] as it normally operates from day to day.” Making surprise visits to facilities and the home of relatives under the care of an aide can give you a clue to the transparency of the facility, company or home aide. If they appear to be what they say they are even during a surprise visit, you know you’re dealing with a company that takes pride in transparency. Too many inconsistencies found should be enough to raise questions in your mind.

ASK Aside from relying on friends and acquaintances to provide the information you’re looking for, don’t be shy; direct your questions and concerns to the manager of the company or facility. Here are some important questions you might want to be prepared to ask when speaking to a manager or administrator: • What kind of schedule is in place to keep the residents active? • What is the staff-to-patient ratio? • What certification is necessary for a home care aide? • Are screenings conducted on all staff members? • Has the home care aide ever had his or her license revoked? • Will the client’s course of treatment be well documented? • What are the payment options and insurance coverage policies? • Are the residents given any freedom in terms of their schedule, mobility and food menu? • Do rooms and bathrooms have grab bars and call buttons? • Is transportation available to take residents

to appointments? Aside for what the administrator or manager of the company or facility may answer, how they attend to your questions might be nearly as important. A manager who is patient, accommodating and takes your questions seriously will likely be caring advocate for your loved one, while you may not want to place your relative in the hands of someone who is irritable, dismissive or unavailable.

UNDERSTAND When signing your loved one over into foreign hands, ignorance is not bliss. Before signing a contract, read all the information thoroughly and clarify whatever you don’t understand. Learn and review the rights of the elderly in a facility or the care of a home care aide. Common rights and protections under federal law include the right to have one’s privacy respected and the right of a resident to choose his or her own doctor.

FOLLOW-UP Every individual in a facility or under the care of a home aide needs an advocate. Show the facility or home-care aide that your loved one has a proactive advocate by visiting or arranging visits to your loved one, be it at home or in the facility, on a regular basis. Observing your relative’s overall behavior and deportment is really the best way to learn whether he or she is safe, content and well-cared for. The level of your loved one’s hygiene is one giveaway. “Another telling sign whether the resident is in good hands is his or her mood,” says Leibel. “If a resident is suddenly more edgy, moody, depressed or anxious, it can be a telltale sign that something is not right.” In addition, bedsores on the body can sometimes be indicative of lack of mobility. Bruises, especially bruises on the upper arm, can, at times, be alarms for excessive force or abuse. It’s never easy to transfer the care of your loved one to strange hands. But, with a dose of preparation, a dollop of common sense, and host of prayers for siyata d’Shmaya, it can prove to be a move that is beneficial for everyone.

MY MOTHER’S PETIRA was sudden and totally unexpected. All nine of her children were catapulted into a different world. A mentsch tracht un G-t lacht; my mother was my father’s junior by at least thirteen years. A European who had lost a wife, two children, parents, siblings, in-laws, nephews and nieces in the Holocaust, my father had told us that his true age was not known to him. When contemplating the future, we always pictured our mother being the survivor. But my father’s personality was truly that of a survivor. Life had always

to handle the transition? Each child would gladly have my father live with them, but where would it be best for him? For the shivah, my two siblings who lived in the States came to Eretz Yisroel and we were all united. United in our grief and united in our determination to see that our father was properly cared for. My eldest brother felt that he could best take care of my father and that in his home in the States there would be more room to accommodate him. This was vetoed as it would take my father out of Eretz Yisroel where he had come to live and had made his home. The same for my other American sibling. So that left seven Israeli siblings. We decided to approach our father and ask him where he would prefer to live. “I am not moving” he stated adamantly. “I am perfectly capable of taking care of myself. A parent can take care of nine children, but nine children cannot take care of a parent!” We argued, we pleaded — and he won. We fell into a schedule of coming to visit my father at his home and trying to help out with the clean-

ing, cooking and odd shopping that he hadn’t done. My father was active for a man in his late seventies — attending and giving shiurim, participating in simchos, running errands and going to his doctor appointments. None of us lived in his neighborhood, and if one of us hadn’t spoken to him or seen him that day, we would check with our siblings if they had. It wasn’t a perfect system. None of us had cars, and we weren’t always privy to his full schedule. One evening we tried calling with no answer, and we were beside ourselves with worry. We called his across-the-hall neighbors, and they informed us that he had a wedding that evening. Another time we tried to reach him to no avail because the telephone wire had slipped out. Four years passed in this manner. We worried because when we visited we saw his diet consisted mostly of carbohydrates and that he was past plump and way into overweight. Without being enlightened of his doctor appointments, he went alone and we were in the dark as to his real state of health. THEN IT HAPPENED. It was Shabbos morning, and as gabai of his shul, he had left early to open the doors and ready the heichal for tefillah. The next person to arrive found my fa-

ther collapsed on the floor having had a heart attack. The ambulance was called and he was rushed off to Bikur Cholim hospital. My father survived the heart attack, but his emotional and physical makeup were compromised. And as for us, guilt consumed us. We hadn’t been attentive enough to his health and with our neglect, had brought this about. We hadn’t done our basic duties as children. The day of my father’s release from hospital was nearing and he was still talking about going home. We all knew that this wasn’t an option any longer, but how would we bring my father to agree to a new set of circumstances? I hesitatingly approached my father and broached the hot topic. “Pa,” I said, “the doctor wants you to have complete rest when you leave the hospital. If you go home you won’t be able to have the rest you need. And it would be very difficult for us to be with you all the time to help out. The best thing would be if you come to my home for a while until you get your strength back.” Silence. “How long do you think it will take?” he cautiously inquired. “I really don’t know. But, right now, this is the best option,” I an-

swered with a false bravado. More silence. “For a little while. But then I’m going back to my apartment.” One step at a time. I had managed to buy some time. My father settled into his new abode with little opposition as long as we remembered this would be temporary. He truly was weak and needed to sleep and eat healthily, with a modicum of exercise. Our children flocked about him, trying to be as quiet as rambunctious children can be. The doors of our home had always been busy letting in friends and family, but now it took on new proportions. My siblings wanted to visit and see their father and also try and alleviate some of the extra chores that had come along with my father’s presence. In actuality, it mostly added to the duties, but one sibling does not have greater rights over a parent than another. They all wanted daily updates of my father’s progress or lack thereof and each had his own ideas of how best to achieve it. Doctor visits became a permanent part of my schedule. There was the family doctor, the cardiologist, the eye doctor and all the tests that each one required. To my siblings’ credit, they offered

time and again to go with my father to doctors’ appointments. I inherently knew that this was not optimal, but after repeated offers and a direct statement — “We are also Pa’s children!” — I relented. My younger sister came to accompany my father to his cardiologist’s appointment. I briefed her as best I could about my father’s state of health. The cardiologist, a no-nonsense personality, asked my sister how my father was faring. She answered that she felt he was alright. “How is his balance recently?” he asked. “I think there isn’t anything unusual. I will ask my sister.” “What about his sleeping habits?” he continued. “Anything new or unusual?” “I don’t know of anything out of the ordinary, but I will ask my sister,” she replied. “Has he had trouble breathing after any activities?” was the next query. “I haven’t heard about it, but I will ask my sister.” The doctor proceeded to take my father’s blood pressure and examine him. As they were about to leave he looked at my sister and pointedly said, “Next time make sure your sis-

Writing is therapeutic and keeping a journal allows release of emotions. The lives of your spouse and children have changed and they appreciate a spoken recognition of their challenges. If there is a simcha on the horizon, bring in extra help. This allows you to focus on the baal simcha and that your parent is not forgotten in the commotion. On the day of the simcha, assign someone to accompany your parent throughout the event. Strange places, loud noise, and crowds of unfamiliar people can make an older person uncomfortable and out of sorts. Whenever possible, give your parent the opportunity to make their own decisions. If physical and mental faculties decline and support systems are needed, they should be implemented with consideration and respect. Be kind to yourself. Make sure that you are not in

a continuous overload. It isn’t good for you, your family or your parent. Your parent may need your help, but they also need their privacy. Encourage them to be as independent and active as is feasible. If a parent moves in to live with you, designate activities for them which make them feel helpful. Ask their opinion about matters and situations. You get feedback on how they think and what they would like and they feel important and worthy of having an opinion. Even difficult things can be enjoyed. Look for the positive and emphasize it. If a change is necessary, implement it as temporary even if it will become permanent. This diminishes the quest for perfection and allows one the ability to explore alternatives more freely. Daven, daven and then daven some more.

ter who lives with him comes.” The weeks shuffled by and soon spring’s sweet promise of renewed life beckoned to one and all. Steadily, my father recouped some of his former strength and he began to venture outdoors accompanied by one of his offspring. His waking hours were more numerous and his ability to attend minyanim proved to him that soon he would once again be an independent being, living in his own apartment. He would be the arbiter of his day, able to choose when and what to eat, when to go out, where he would venture and how much to

crammed into a room to make a bedroom available for my father; one of our bathrooms had been designated solely for his use; we didn’t leave for Shabbosim so that my father was always taken care of; we gave up our privacy to host all the friends and family who came to call on my father; I cooked special foods according to his doctor’s orders; we made ourselves available to help him when he needed it — and my father wanted to go to his home! We weren’t good enough! My father had been renting his apartment in Bayit V’gan and the lease was up for renewal in the beginning of June. That was the catalyst for the next salvo. The end of May had my father going more and more often to his old stomping grounds. The last Friday of the month, my father passed by me as I was rushing around to get Shabbos ready and casually said, “I am going today to renew my lease on the apartment, and come next week, I am going home. I thank you for everything you did for me, but the time has come for me to move back home.” My hurt overwhelmed my fear at that moment and I whined, “Pa, weren’t we good enough to you? Didn’t we treat you well? Why do you want to leave us?” With the sadness of being misunderstood emanating from him, his eyes swept my face and said, “It is because of it that I need to go back home. You have done so much, your life and your husband’s life are not normal anymore. I can’t be a burden to you. It’s time for me to go home.” My heart wrenched inside of me and I felt humbled. How I had misunderstood his actions! “Pa, we want you to stay. You give so much to the children — they love your stories and your humor. I get to hear things about your childhood that you never told me when I was growing up. My children get to know their only living

Guilt consumed us. We hadn’t been attentive enough to his health and with our neglect, had brought this about. We hadn’t done our basic duties as children. carry. Purim was a riot of my husband’s talmidim, friends and family, singing, drinking and espousing divrei Torah. Relatives reveled in my father’s witty humor and they exchanged Torah tidbits, each applauding the other’s insights. Life was good. Next on the calendar was Pesach. I saw my father was getting itchy to be back in his neighborhood. He had taken the bus several times already, checking his mailbox in the post office and meeting friends who had enthusiastically greeted him and told him how much he was missed in shul and at the shiurim. I wasn’t too concerned; since my mother’s petira he had always been at our home for the sedarim, so it would be just a lengthened Pesach visit. With each mention of his eventual return home I was both nervous and hurt. We definitely didn’t want him to be living alone — severed from a newly formed cord whose other end formed tentacles around his children. We had morphed our lives — four of our children were

grandparent up close. We love you. Please stay!” The gruffness of his refusal I now knew hid his concern about being a burden too big to bear. He turned from me and headed out to sign the lease for the coming year on the apartment in Bayit V’gan. I had failed once again. Yes, it had taken a physical and emotional toll to have my father live with us, but the thought of his leaving felt like a crucial element of my being was being severed. I called one sibling after another just to displace some of the grief I felt caged inside of me. Hours passed and I awaited my father’s return. I first heard the key, and then the door open tentatively. My father entered, eyes downcast and a slow gait. “Pa, how are you? I was getting worried. It is so close to Shabbos and you need to get ready. Do you want to eat something?” “Shaynaleh, I tried,” he said, with decades of hardship and pain in those words. “I tried, but I can’t do it. I can’t go back. If you will still have me, I want to stay.” Tears of gratitude mixed with tears for my father’s pain trickled down my face. “Pa, nothing could make us happier!” And my father stayed with us for the next seven years until our house emptied out and became quiet. By then my father had become homebound and the lack of action in my home brought him little stimulation. He moved across the road to my brother’s home which was a whirlwind of activity and liveliness. There he stayed until he had a stroke and was hospitalized in a coma for six months. We davened and prayed that half year that Hashem restore my father to health, but we are not the rulers of the world. It is now eighteen years since my father’s petira. My children often speak of him and quote him. I know that there were times that I assumed the role of parent and most likely did not treat my father with the proper respect. For that I ask forgiveness every Yom Kippur. But for the gift of having had my father in my home I must give thanks every day.

Perhaps you know the story: An elderly parents falls, begins forgetting things, or suffers a dramatic, life-threatening event. Throughout the initial trauma or onset of illness, the hearts of all family members are thrown into turmoil. But even when the climatic moments have passed, these feelings may continue. Stress levels may reach an all-time high when the realization sets in that life may never be the same for you and your loved one again. You may have to take care of the person who has always taken care of you! While the family dynamics change, you may also find yourself needing to change the way your home looks and operates. In a better scenario, your parent may be able to retain independent function while still living at his or her own home, but may need various modifications to enable that sort of life. Baruch Hashem, we live in a time in which special needs are well-accommodated and independent living has never been as accessible for those whom age challenges. Here are some great devices that enable life to continue in the most comfortable way possible. Sponsored by:

WHEELCHAIR ACCOMMODATIONS

PORTABLE RAMPS While most of us are familiar with the stationary ramps that are able to be built onto one’s home, there are also portable ramps for vehicles and hard-to-access places.

SWING CLEAR HINGES Wheelchairs can be quite girthy, and it’s not always possible to widen a door frame to accommodate the chair. These Swing Clear Hinges are perfect for moving a door fully out of the way to access those precious extra centimeters for passing.

WHEELCHAIR MATS Likewise, wheelchair mats make small elevations not seem like giant mountains.

WATER WHEELS For the wheelchair-bound that yearn for the water, these special wheelchairs enable mobility in the pool! There have even been pool wheelchairs specially outfitted with underwater motors and dive gear for sea exploration!

MOBILITY ENHANCERS

STAIR LIFTS What is a person to do if they want to continue living in their own multi-story home but can no longer tackle the stairs? Stair lifts are a beautiful, elegant (and dare we say fun?) solution!

BED TRAPEZE Everyone knows that there is nothing like sleeping in your own bed. But sometimes, a person with mobility difficulties may find entering and exiting difficult. These bed trapezes fit over that good old comfy bed to enhance mobility.

GRAB BARS Grab bars come in several different varieties and can be installed anywhere around the home for extra support and stability.

SAFETY TUBS Elegant and awesome, these walk-in tubs enable easy access for those with limited mobility. Some versions include built-in seats.

HANDSTEADY CUP While there are many modified eating implements for various conditions, HandSteady drinking mugs are a must mention. There are rave reviews from those with tremors, Parkinsons, MS and other conditions that make drinking from a standard mug difficult. With its rotating handle that works with gravity to prevent spillage, these cups protect the dignity of its owners while drinking.

PORTABLE SHOWER Sometimes, a patient will be too weak or is attached to machinery which makes it hard to travel even a short distance to the shower. For these situations, there are portable showers that can be brought into any room.

ALZHEIMER’S DEVICES

MEMORY PICTURE PHONE If your loved one is suffering from memory loss but wants to remain connected with the people they care about, this memory picture phone is a precious invention. By pushing the button with the picture of the person they wish to speak to, connection is easily made.

GPS TRACKING WATCH Designed to function as a regular watch, this GPS tracking device can keeps tabs on your dear one.

STOVE GUARD Worried about your parent forgetting to shut off the stove after cooking? There are special stove guards that automatically shut off after a specific amount of time when motion is no longer detected near the stove.

IS IT 65? The Social Security retirement age keeps on increasing very gradually. Initially, the full benefit age was 65, and early retirement benefits began at age 62.

Currently, the full benefit age is 66 for people born in 1943–1954, and it will gradually rise to 67 for those born in 1960 or later. Early retirement benefits will continue to be available at age 62, but they will be reduced further.

There is a financial bonus for delayed retirement: an additional 8 percent benefit for each year one delays collecting benefits. If you delay taking benefits until age 70, the benefit will be 32 percent higher because of that delay.

The maximum retirement benefit for someone who waits until age 70 to collect benefits was $3,501 a month in 2015.

84% of retirees receive income from Social Security.

Every day for the next 18 years, another 8,000 baby boomers will turn 65. That’s roughly one person every 10 seconds.

Being Prepared for Retirement: 38% of retirees worldwide claimed to have been unprepared for retirement. SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER: Living arrangements

Financial stability

Health coverage

BY THE NUMBER 38% of retirees worldwide claimed to have been unprepared for retirement.

44% of Americans ages 65 and older live alone.

Retirees who do move most often move within their state and even county.

Only 5.7 percent of Americans age 65 and older moved to a new residence between 2009 and 2013.

Only 1% of retirees moved to a new state.

A study conducted by the Center for Retirement Research at Boston showed that 46% of people rate the retirement they are getting, or expect to get, not to be sufficient, while 17% say it is satisfactory. 98 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 15, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Time: How to spend it? (Hobbies, relationships, volunteering). Seniors spend about 7.5 hours a day on leisure activities.

Just 0.3% went overseas.

18% of US population believes they will never be able to afford to retire.

Investing to be able to afford retirement is wise. 40% of baby boomers plan to “work until they drop,” according to an AARP survey. AMERICANS INVEST FOR RETIREMENT:

401K A retirement savings plan sponsored by an employer. You can invest parts of your paycheck before taxes are deducted.

Pension A given amount of monthly income during retirement.

Roth IRA A retirement plan that is not taxed.

ESOP An employee stock ownership plan. It’s an employee benefit where one can invest in a stock of the sponsoring employer.

Traditional IRA A type of retirement plan.

403B A retirement savings plan for employees of public schools and other tax exempt organizations.

General Savings Account

HOW MUCH DO WE CONTRIBUTE?

Employees: 6.2% of their earnings.

Employers match 6.2% for a total of 12.4%

Self-employed people pay that whole amount on their own!

Earnings above $118,500 are exempt from Social Security contributions.

Most Americans value social security and would rather pay more than have the payout reduced! In 1955, there were more than 8 people paying into the system for each beneficiary. Today there are about 3. In 2031, projections show it will be down to two.

Ernest Ackerman was the first person to receive a Social Security benefit. In March 1937. It was a one-time, lump-sum payment of 17¢.

Centenarians: in 1980 there were 15,000 of them. Today there are over 72,000. And 80% are women.

Organize while you clean

On every Yiddishe mother’s mind is surely the same thing: Pesach cleaning! How can I organize my schedule to pave the way for doable and calm Pesach prep? That’s an excellent question, and since Pesach is closer than we dare to think, we’ll be starting with an overall plan. The first thing to do is exactly as you said: Organize your schedule. Create a calendar from Tu B’shvat until bedikas chometz night, and in each day’s square, fill in exactly what you want to and can accomplish on that day. Breaking up the Pesach cleaning into days’ amount of work makes the task seem so much more doable, and you might even manage it without outside cleaning help. Then, focus on one day at a time.

CREATING THE CALENDAR 1. Start backward. First figure out what needs to be done in the days and weeks leading to Pesach. How much time would you like to allot for cooking? If and when would you like to kasher the kitchen? Then, work backward from there. 2. Leave an empty slot weekly, like Motzei Shabbos, to finish up the work that wasn’t completed during the week. 3. Keep in mind that you can be done with most “non-food areas” by Purim, like bedroom drawers and closets, the linen closet, laundry room, coat closet — and even the top kitchen cabinets. 4. If you have extras, like toys, that are not mandatory to clean but can still use your attention, leave them for the nights when you’ll have completed the day’s scheduled tasks. 5. Divide the days wisely; it’s always rather to lightly reclean a room, than to leave the entire job for a later date. Keep in mind: Things often take longer than you think! Designate an amount of time to spend on your job without interruptions. (Talk-

ing on the phone often slows down your pace. However, music will make the task more pleasurable. ) Anything that needs to be placed in a different room, leave at the entrance to be distributed to different rooms when your job is done. Otherwise, you will get stuck doing different things elsewhere.

LAUNDRY ROOM: • Sort everything into categories as much as possible. It will help you find items faster. • *Batteries *light bulbs and flashlights *shoe polish and shoe strings *first aid *baby accessories *home improvement *creams • You can either divide laundry and cleaning detergents in separate bins or keep them all lined up on different sides of the shelf. • Long bins for small sprays are a neat solution and can be pulled out to access back items. • A cloth shopping bag or cloth bin is very handy for clean rags. • Turning on a ceiling fan works very well to dry laundry fast. • A metal towel rod can be screwed under a cabinet to keep spare hangers or short hanging items.

COAT CLOSET: • Sort the items you remove from the closet; either kids and adult stuff separately in two baskets, or by category: shawls, gloves, etc., each in a separate bin. Store things that are currently not in use higher than the ones in use. • Have separate bins for reflectors and rain bonnets. • Keep coats and jackets that are not in use in a different closet.

• If you’re short on shelf space, you can hang a shoe rack on the closet door for accessories, or use a long-hanging shoe holder.

UMBRELLA STORAGE IDEAS: 1. Bathroom size garbage can 2. In a bin on shelf 3. On hooks

BATHROOM AND VANITY: • Medicine chest: Place a long, narrow bin on each shelf. Categorize the toothbrushes, toothpaste, nail clippers etc. in them. Remember: After midnight, you work much more slowly. Rather get your rest then, and you’ll have more energy, time, head space and patience for the next day’s work. Sufficient sleep and a healthy breakfast will truly boost your energy and allow the day to run smoothly with optimum results. Make it your Number One priority! Feel free to ask your questions! Leave a voicemail at 845-274-3133 or send an email to comments@themonseyview.com, and keep an eye out for the answers.

ACROSS

He arrived in Damascus, his final stop before Eretz Yisroel.

Where is that sweet voice coming from?

A rich man, Rav Shaul Farchi, lives here. In one of the wings of his home he has Talmud Beis El, a yeshivah for mekubalim.

From where are those sounds of learning? Is there a yeshivah here?

He supports them and their families so they can learn without worries.

How badly I want to be near these holy mekubalim!

17 CHAPTER

Recap: Shalom courageously sets out on the journey to Eretz Yisroel, often stopping to do odd jobs to pay for his trip. February 15, 2017 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 117 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Real Estate Recent Changes in Mortgage Guidelines THERE HAVE BEEN MANY CHANGES IN THE MORTgage industry beginning a few short months ago. New regulations, new guidelines, some uncertainty and some disappointments. A few such changes that can affect the homebuyer are new qualification guidelines regarding self-employed borrowers, new guidelines affecting the FHA purchaser and new guidelines regarding a person who has a second job for less than two years. Self-employed borrowers: It is getting more complicated to verify for mortgage purposes the use of business funds for the purpose of purchasing a home. The home buyer says, “This is my company and it is my money, so who cares?” The mortgage industry, on the other hand, wants to make sure that by using these funds the sustainability and the operating of the business won’t be affected. The school of thought is that if the business owner uses all the funds in his business account, the business may not be able to make payroll or pay for new goods and services. We want to establish, through an analysis of the transactions in the business account, as to whether the business can function after the withdrawal of the funds. Additionally, if a business owner receives income on his K1 form, but he actually didn’t pay himself this money, but invested it in the business, and the distribution amount is lower than the income amount, we have to use the lower amount. These changes are just some that are affecting self-employed borrowers, making it more difficult than before to qualify for a mortgage loan. Another huge impact is that the AUS (Automated Underwriting Systems) algorithms are changing — meaning, borrowers that would have gotten approved two months ago may not get the same approvals today. Examples are a self-employed borrower using only one year of business tax returns to qualify for the loan or a lower or shallow credit score borrower. In the past we would have gotten an approval; now we are seeing “ineligible” or “caution.”

As always, the mortgage industry keeps us on our toes.

FHA has seen a teaser. Prior to Obama leaving office, he signed an executive order reducing the monthly mortgage insurance required for an FHA borrower, to go into effect January 27. We actually had people hold off on their closings in order to take advantage of this. As soon as Trump got elected, on Day One of his presidency, he undid this executive order along with all the other 1,500 or so that Obama had signed in the last two weeks of his presidency. As of now, the chatter from HUD is that this will be reviewed sometime in the future. So FHA premiums have remained the same. Another new guideline change is that if a person has two jobs, and if the viability of the second job makes sense to an underwriter, we would be able to use that in-

come. Only one program at this point has made that change, going into effect in late February. This is huge. There is a client of mine who is a nurse. He called me in August. He has two jobs, both 20 hours each. He was a recent graduate of school, so he had only one year on both jobs. Back then, he needed a cosigner to qualify because we could only use the income from one job, since the guideline hitherto had required without exception a two-year history of maintaining two jobs. He did not buy a home yet. We spoke last week again and now we can actually use both jobs’ income. It makes sense. So many fields, especially medical- and education-related ones, have part-time opportunities, and recent graduates or even people with experience will leave a 40-hour-per-week job and take two solid 20-hour-aweek jobs. Now there is a way to use that income before two years has elapsed. As always, the mortgage industry keeps us on our toes. Whoever has not been pre-approved for a mortgage since November 2016 and is still in the market to purchase a home, must reach out to an experienced mortgage originator to make sure that nothing has changed.
