Unanswered Questions If faculty and staff cannot answer questions, who can we turn to?

W

e get it. Financial aid is a complicated process. We get it. Attendance is important.

But if after two weeks of researching how the new attendance tracker influences financial-aid students, and all we get is the run-around, unanswered emails and ignored voice mails, it leads us to believe that our so-called “experts” on campus do not get it.

Last semester St. Louis Community College instituted

a new attendance tracking system to be in compliance with the Federal Regulation for Financial Aid. Our previous attendance system did not account for students who stopped attending class after they enrolled. The tracker records all students’ attendance, but those with financial aid are the focus because if students with financial aid stop attending classes, they might have to eventually pay the college back.

Sounds simple, right? Not so much.

NEWS BRIEFS: MERAMEC MORSELS Discounted tuition for undocumented persons deferred After media reports recently publicized that STLCC was offering undocumented students local tuition rates versus international or out-of-state rates, Interim Chancellor Dennis Michaelis, Ph.D., released a statement to the board of trustees at the Jan. 16 meeting.

According to Michaelis, “... it has become increasingly evident that the issue of tuition charged

to undocumented persons is a complicated matter and that many states have revised their policies and procedures to address this particular issue.”

Michaelis said he has become aware of efforts to develop a comprehensive policy for the state of Missouri in regards to charging of in-district or in-state tuition to undocumented persons. “As a result, I have decided to defer

St. Louis Community College’s administrative decision to grant in-district or in-state tuition to these students until such time that a comprehensive statewide policy is developed,” Michaelis said.

It is still unclear whether or not undocumented students registered for the spring 2014 semester received a discount before the interim chancellor deferred the policy.

Alternative spring break trip registration deadline Jan. 31 Twenty five students will have the opportunity to spend spring break giving back to the New Orleans community while representing STLCC-Meramec.

Students registered to participate in the alternative spring break service trip to New Orleans, sponsored by Campus Life and the Service Learning Office, will leave campus at 7 a.m. Sunday, March 9 and return Friday evening, March 14.

“We have done this every year for six or seven years – this will be my fourth year going on the trip,” said Debbie Corson, coordinator of Service Learning.

“It started out as a direct response to Hurricane Katrina.”

This year’s trip will include work with the International High School of New Orleans.

“They’re in a really old building in the Garden District in New Orleans, so we paint and do some dry walling, maybe a little bit of building,” Corson said. “We have helped them with some Katrina damage, but now we’re going back because we’ve formed a relationship with them.”

Students seeking service learning credit can earn 30 hours of service during the spring break trip alone, Corson said. “We have

a semester service program where students who would get 45 hours of service during one semester get two letters of recommendation that they can have sent to four-year colleges or use it for scholarship applications,” Corson said. “So, it’s a great opportunity to get 30 of the 45 hours of service that somebody would need.”

Fees include a $100 deposit due Jan. 31 and the remaining balance of $193 due Feb. 18.

Trip sponsors will host meetings at 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 29 and 6 p.m.

INTERIM CHANCELLOR DENNIS MICHAELIS

Interim chancellor appoints new administrator, eliminates Wildwood president position On Jan. 23, Interim Chancellor Dennis Michaelis, Ph.D., announced the appointment of Brad Bankhead to serve as administrator of strategic projects and student services beginning Feb. 3 on a temporary basis.

Bankhead will be responsible for assisting with review of the college’s admissions, registration and financial aid operations.

“This position is a step toward establishing the position of vice chancellor of student services and as a part-time temporary position will allow me the time and opportunity to evaluate the value of this position and structure to STLCC,” Michaelis noted in a STLCC press release.

“I would also point out that the longer term goal is to reduce the number of administrative positions over the course of the next 18 months.”

Michaelis said he has also recommend that the Wildwood campus president position be eliminated effective July 1, 2014.

The Wildwood vice president for academic affairs and director of student affairs would then report to Meramec President Pam McIntyre.

In an email to faculty and staff, Michaelis noted that change in any institution can be very difficult and that he feels “strongly that significant change in our college must occur if we are to move STLCC forward.”

Archers host cancer awareness event Feb. 8 STLCC-Meramec will host the third annual Cancer Awareness Basketball Game at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8 in the Meramec gymnasium. The game is in memory of Mike Ethridge, father of Archers’ Womens’ Basketball Head Coach Shelly Ethridge. The event will raise proceeds for young cancer patients.

The Archers womens’ team will play Wentworth Military Academy at 1 p.m., followed by the men’s match against Wentworth at 3 p.m.

The event will feature a silent auction, raffles, giveaways and t-shirt sales.

Meramec Theatre hosts two upcoming plays Theater students are actively preparing for a production of “Tales of the Lost Formicans,” directed by Meramec Professor Keith Oliver, with performance dates set at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 1115 and 2 p.m. Feb. 16 in the Meramec Theatre.

After final production wraps, the STLCC-Meramec theater program will launch production of “Bye, Bye Birdie” with auditions slated for Tuesday, Feb. 18 and Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7

p.m. in the Meramec Theatre.

Students auditioning should prepare a one to two-minute comic monologue and prepare a one-minute song with sheet music in the correct key. The theatre departments encourages dress for a dance audition.

The performances of “Bye, Bye Birdie,” directed by Meramec Professor Michelle Rebollo, will be April 16-19 at 7:30 p.m. and April 20 at 2 p.m. in the Meramec Theatre.

Gone too soon

Meramec adjunct professor Alan Shiller, 63, dies over Winter Break SPENCER GLEASON EDITOR IN CHIEF Following Speech Communications Professor Alan Shiller’s two-and-a-half hour funeral ceremony, the majority of some-two hundred people came to his wife, Bonnie, to tell her how amazed they were with the magnitude of Alan’s interests—even their oldest son, Scott.

“I said to Scott,‘Did you learn anything about dad at the funeral?” Bonnie Shiller said.

“He said, ‘Yea, I didn’t know dad was a songwriter.’ I said, ‘Yes. The man who doesn’t have a voice and you don’t want him to sing.’

Shiller used to write Christian worship choruses.

Along with teaching more than 10,000 students in a career that spanned across 40 years, Shiller, an adjunct professor at STLCC-Meramec, enjoyed theatrical productions, checking out the newest restaurants and being a “family man.” Shiller, 63, died of complications while recovering from open-heart surgery on Dec. 28, 2013.

The open-heart surgery had been planned since October.

They replaced his heart valve and did a maze procedure, in which a series of incisions were made on the heart to make it beat in the right pattern, a minimally invasive procedure.

On the eighth day, following the procedure, Shiller was out of the intensive care unit (ICU) and in a private room, but for only 24 hours, before they took him back in.

Shiller, who taught at Meramec for 27 years, was also part-time at Webster University

and full-time at Southwest Illinois University-Edwardsville (SIUE). While most full-time professors teach four or five classes a semester, Shiller taught 10 to 14 per semester between three or four colleges.

“There are some faculty that are just supposed to be teaching. And that’s what he

was. He was somebody who was supposed to be teaching,” Acting Department Chair for Communications Susan Hunt Bradford said. “I’m sad for him that he’s not doing this here anymore. And I’m sad for future students; that they don’t get to experience him and for his coworkers and other faculty. We

There was no place Schiller would rather be than in a classroom.

Fellow adjunct Meramec instructor, Jill Dupy, only heard rumors of how much her friends enjoyed Shiller’s classes while attending SIUE in 2007.

“I had never had a class with him. I had heard so many good things about him,” Dupy said. “When I was a student, even then, students loved him.

Students talk. We know who’s good and who’s not. We talk about what we liked and what we didn’t like. I’ve never heard a student say a bad thing about him.”

The teaching gene was in the Shiller family. Bonnie Shiller is involved with the early childhood education program at both STLCC-Forest Park and St. Charles Community College.

Their two sons, Scott and Casey Shiller, also picked up on their father’s other passions as their careers. Scott Shiller, is a Broadway Producer and Casey Shiller is the head coordinator of baking and pastry STLCCForest Park. On the side, Casey works as the director of pastry at Jilly’s Cupcakes and has been featured three times on the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” winning twice — the

most recent victory coming last spring.

From the outside, looking in, Dupy could see the love shared between Bonnie Shiller and her husband of 39 years.

“He doted on her. You could tell he adored her. I loved being around them because they had a great relationship and you could tell that they just got each other,” Dupy said. “They had this great sense of humor together. Just to sit and listen to them talk to each other was comical because they’d been married for a long time and you could just tell that they had a deep connection.”

For Bonnie Shiller, her sense of peace comes in a message from her husband many times before. In every birthday card, holiday card and thoughtful card ‘Looking toward tomorrow’ was the way Shiller would sign every one he gave to his wife.

“That was his signature on every card for me and he would sign his name. Since Alan’s loss, I have begun signing everything, ‘Looking toward tomorrow,’” Bonnie Shiller said. “Some days it’s hard to, but the bottom line is I do look toward tomorrow because with that incredible pain, look at the learning; look at the love that Alan and I shared within our life. We were really true in every sense of the form soul mates.”

Examining Bias With sunday night’s Super Bowl XLVIII around the corner, much of the talk has been centered around postgame comments of Seattle Seahawks cornerback, Richard Sherman.

After effectively ending the game with a great play in the end zone, Sherman had emotional, arrogant and insulting comments directed at the opposing receiver. While the egotism displayed by Sherman was almost universally unlikable, the responses to his comments were quite varied.

Richard Sherman, who has since apologized for his comments, addressed being called “thug” saying that it is “the accepted way of calling somebody the n-word.” Is the word “thug” a code meant as a racial slur, knowingly or not?

and potential biases, it is important that it is examined so that growth can occur.

Race, gender, sexuality, attire, age and numerous other traits play a role in how individuals perceive themselves and others.

It is not a stretch to say that had Sherman been white, he would not have received the same backlash, though there may have been a response, and would have almost certainly not been called a thug. (His actions weren’t thuggish, but sophomoric and immature.)

To illustrate this point, examine an incident that occurred in a MarlinsBraves game in September of 2013. Jose Fernandez, a Marlins pitcher, hit his first career home run. He flipped his bat, and strutted around the bases with all ego and swagger that you would expect from a 21-year-old rookie. Brian McCann, the Brave’s catcher proceeded to stand in the baseline and would not allow Fernandez to touch home plate. This act led to the benches clearing, though no punches were thrown. While reactions to this incident varied, there was no mainstream use of the word “thug” or similar terms in regards to McCann, who is white. Instead, he was regarded as an “old school” baseball guy ...

Whatever that means.

It happens frequently that someone’s outward appearance affects the way they are perceived by others. Most everyone has done this at some point in their life. But, by being honest with themselves and being aware of this tendency, people should attempt to view everybody through the same lens.

“Local media misleads thousands by means of ambiguous word choice”. All too often I find myself confused by unclear and generalized wording of headlines written by local news outlets such as KSDK and StlToday. It is painfully obvious that such headlines are purposefully ambiguous to target certain types of readers and sometimes even achieve some sort of emotional response. The term used to describe such editorial persuasion in what should be objective reporting is sensationalism. Sensationalist reporting aims to over-hype a topic in order to increase the amount of potential readers.

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of the sensationalist methods seen in local news is that it works. It does not take much time spent on the Facebook page of KSDK to find a host of outraged St. Louisans making strong claims about a topic based

Mars Settlers If you had a chance and opportunity to take a one-way trip to Mars, would you? To live on a planet where nobody has lived before with only three other people, growing your own food and having to make your own resources? Sounds scary, but not to 200,000 people who applied to take the risky trip. According to stltoday. com, out of 200,000 applicants, 1,058 candidates were chosen from part of a privately funded “Mars One” mission to be launched to the planet of Mars in 2024. Two St. Louisans (Maggie Duckworth,29 and Tim Gowan, 26) were chosen. Having to pass a “rigorous selection process” is a major obstacle to eventually become one of the four people to go within ten years. Of course, after the selection process comes learning to survive on the planet, having to “undergo solely off of a single post that provides virtually no facts about the topic itself.

Instead local journalists choose ambiguous terminology and only hinting toward the topic. For example, KSDK reports on Facebook, “The contractor says it’s no big deal; some county officials say it could be a very big deal. Read about some problems in the new county crime lab.” Some questions that come to my mind about this post are: What is “it”? Why is or isn’t it a big deal? A headline should not include all the details about a story, but such ambiguity insults the reader’s intelligence in a shallow attempt to lure them with the bait of omitted details.

As an alternative, news outlets such as NPR and Associated Press tend to have less editorial bias in their reporting. Unlike the rhetoric infested writing of local media, such alternatives tend to get straight to facts letting readers form their own opinion.

Of the two, Tim Gowan seems to be the more excited one, and a little “obsessed” with the idea. His girlfriend of three years reportedly hates the fact that her boyfriend will be moving to a whole different planet with no return, although his parents have been more supportive thus far. Duckworth’s father, David, tells StlToday that his daughter is very intelligent, but he wishes that she would “focus her energy on something else” explaining that the whole one-way trip to Mars seems like a big game show to him.

When most people think space, they think NASA. Well, surprisingly NASA was “too risk-averse to send a group of humans on a one-way trip to Mars,” while other private organizations do not have such boundaries or restrictions. As the article states, sending people to Mars isn’t a hard task, it’s just that getting them back to Earth would definitely be more difficult and cost “10 times more than the initial journey.”

Having to get along with three other people and having to face the dangers on a completely new planet while providing your own resources is some risky business and seems completely terrifying to myself, but I guess everyone will see for themselves if this seemingly crazy idea can be pulled off.

The Montage sent out reporters to the financial aid office, admissions and academic affairs to see how students were affected by this new tracking system and how much it affected financial aid. The problem?

Reporters were sent in circles when asking what seemed like miniscule questions. A reporter would ask to talk to source A, source A would say to talk to source B, source B would say to talk to source A, and so on. Some sources would not even respond for days, after multiple phone calls and emails.

The real question is not all about the attendance; it is about how the attendance system, or user error or glitches in the system

can affect a student’s financial aid. Can a student lose financial aid if an instructor makes an error when inputting attendance?

Can a hybrid or online student be dropped from classes if he or she forgets to post an assignment?

We wanted these questions cleared up, but every source had a different answer. Where are the real experts and where is the professionalism we deserve?

If a determined reporter cannot get answers, how is a student who could be on the verge of getting dropped from classes get answers? Why should a student, someone who just wants to better his or her life, be sent on a wild goose chase while his or her academic future is hanging by a

thread? What a great way to get those retention numbers up.

We are transitioning to an online world, yes. But should the face-to-face assistance suffer because faculty and staff assume all students know how to navigate the STLCC website to find the necessary information?

A simple Google search revealed more details than any of the “experts” on campus. An attendance guideline, made for the new system, was found via luck. Where was this when we were asking questions? Is this a handout, or did we stumble upon something not meant for our eyes?

The guide found via a six-word Google search contradicts almost

every statement made by our salary-earning “professionals.”

A written guide carries a lot more weight than the person whose job it is to know his or her department.

Many of the interviews were filled with “I don’t know for sure … ” and “I believe it is supposed to … ” shortly followed by “You should talk to … ” This is where the run-around comes into play.

Students should not spend their days following voice mail leads and email chains; they should be focusing on their studies, in order to create a brighter future. They should not be asked to “take a number,” they should be asked what size graduation gown they want.

We have waited a semester, in fact six months, since the attendance tracker was put into place, and if STLCC still cannot figure its own stuff out, how are the students, who are supposed to be the real focus, going to put their trust and money in this institution?

Gone are the days we got to know our instructors better than the login page of Blackboard.

Gone are the in-class progress reports that were taken over by computer-generated grades. We are humans, not numbers. Put an end to this scavenger hunt and face the music. These issues cannot be put-off forever. A mess has been made, and someone has to clean it up.

Start off the week with eating light.

For example: a hearty chef salad with light dressing for dinner and drink lots of water.

Make the most out of the Monday blues. Energize with a fresh fruit smoothie. Meditate in the morning for at least twenty minutes.

Staying on target

Staying on track can be hard to do once the year gets into full swing.

Complications of school, work, family life and so much more tend to use free time that was set aside to get healthy and fit. However, maintaining good health all year is more achievable than one would think.

First, set short-term and long-term goals. How do you want to look and feel in the next week or about the next month? Or how about in the next year?

When a goal is reached, do something for yourself. For example, those running shoes you have had your eye on, you can finally buy since the goal has been met. Goals do not have to be big in order to achieve good health and fitness. Even something as minuscule as getting off the couch everyday is a step in the right direction. Starting small can be the perfect way to get on target with that spring break body.

Next, make some switches in your diet. Instead of drinking soda with every meal, replace some of those sugary drinks with water or juice. Going cold turkey and ridding diets of soda altogether can be problematic, but drinking less sugary drinks can make a difference. Also, instead of eating lunch out all the time, start packing a healthy lunch at least once a week. This will save on not only junk and fast food but money as well.

Exercise is vital to not only a better body but a better mind. Working out or even being active can lead to happier moods especially in the chaos of life.

While regular workouts can become routine, they can also become boring.

Switch it up a bit and do something that you enjoy doing. Whether it is running or playing a sport, if you like what you are doing it will be less of a workout and more fun.

Under Pressure Meramec Art Gallery hosts contemporary printmaking exhibit The Meramec Art Gallery presents “Under Pressure: Contemporary Printmaking and Changing Landscapes.” Some of the work displayed includes relief prints and woodcuts to expanding and experimenting on unique surfaces and topics. One of the artists featured is Ken Wood, Meramec’s printmaking professor.

The gallery is located on the first floor of the Humanities East Building. The hours for the gallery are Monday-Thursday 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed on Sundays and holidays.

The exhibit will be open Jan. 23 through Feb. 14.

Meramec alumnus keeps it old school Dave Hinson, local guitar shop owner, sells to A-list DENNIS W. PARKS STAFF WRITER Former STLCC-Meramec student, Dave Hinson, has always had a passion for guitars. Since taking lessons from Mel Bay, local music teacher, in 1962, Hinson’s guitar knowledge has grown into a career.

In 1994, Hinson opened Killer Vintage, a guitar store that specializes in appraising, buying, selling and repairing of both electric and acoustic vintage guitars, and amplifiers. Along with local musicians, Hinson’s clientele includes Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones, Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top, Sheryl Crow and the Eagles, as well as other well-known artists.

Aside from doing business with rock stars, Hinson spends much of his time as an editor for “Vintage Guitar Price Guide” and is also a contributing editor and advisor of the “Blue Book of Guitars.” He also serves on the advisory board for Los Angeles’ Modern Guitar Museum, an

“I learn everyday,” Hinson said. “There is a lot of information on the Internet, but not a lot of knowledge.”

Hinson, who studied music at Meramec in 1971, started playing gigs at local high school dances when he was 15.

“Twenty dollars a night was a big gig back then,” Hinson said.

After a few years, Hinson began searching out other guitars.

He was continually playing music and therefore looking for a better instrument for himself. With each guitar he purchased or sold, he would gain more knowledge of each guitar’s characteristics and sound qualities.

“At that time these guitars were just ‘used,’” Hinson said.

“They had not gained that ‘vintage’ or ‘classic’ status, yet.”

After attending Meramec, a scholarship to play guitar for the jazz band lured Hinson to Southwest Baptist College. A semester later, he was a student at Southwest Missouri State University. One constant was that he was still playing guitar — along

After leaving college, Hinson worked as a freight train conductor for the Union Pacific Railroad. Traveling a lot, Hinson was able to search out and buy old guitars all across the country.

When back home in St. Louis, Hinson would take one of his new finds backstage at the Kiel Opera House or another local venue.

“In those days, if you were carrying a guitar case most anyone could go backstage,” Hinson said. “It would sure make an impression on your date if you sold a guitar to Jethro Tull, watched the concert from backstage and partied with the band after the show.”

Although nowadays Hinson does not play guitar as much as he used to, he still continues to play regular gigs with Whiskey Morning, a local country band.

For Hinson, music and guitars have been a way of life and he has no intention of retiring any time soon.

“It’s the thrill of the hunt,” Hinson said.

Many staff members hope to have students come in use their specific service. Many of those services consist of the college writing center, computer labs, library use, academic advising and many more. “I think it’s great.

It puts most of the campus services in one spot so they can at least meet someone to see what’s out there, “ Hooker said. “The goal is hopefully to have students come in to actually visit us in person.”

Lady Archers strive to win games DAVID KLOECKENER PHOTO EDITOR With a win over Metropolitan Community College Penn Valley on Jan. 22 and North Central Missouri College Jan. 25, the Lady Archers move to a record of 14-4. The Lady Archers have won their last five games.

Now in the second half of the season, the Lady Archers credit some of their success to team bonding.

“I feel everyone has improved a lot and we’re finally getting chemistry,” Sophomore Guard Kalah Martin said. “We’re just fine tuning a little things on defense.”

With the Lady Archers having one returning player, newer players have looked to Martin as the sole leader of the team.

According to Freshman Guard Abby Hutson, the team has improved as a whole.

“None of us really knew each other coming in here so it was a lot harder to get used to the way everybody played since Kalah was the only one there,” Hutson said.

“We finally started to understand how each other plays and we’re finally playing better together. I still think we can pick it up. It’s a lot better than it was at the beginning.”

With a commanding 79-59 win over North Central Missouri College on Saturday, the coaches said they are happy with how the team is handling themselves but are taking the season day by day

to make sure postseason play will be in reach.

“It was our best game so far.

It was a total team effort and best defensive game we’ve had.

It’s definitely a step in the right direction. We’re taking it one game at a time,” Head Coach Shelly Ethridge said. “The kids have their goals and that’s to get back to the National Tournament.

We’re not looking ahead of tomorrow. We’re focusing in on each and every game.”

The Lady Archers and coaching staff are preparing for their next game against Mineral Area College. Games that will count for an overall division ranking are few and far between but with coaches and players taking one game at a time, every game is a stepping stone to getting ready for the postseason.

“We play Mineral Area on Wednesday. Mineral Area is a conference game and they’re a Division 1 school. So these conference games aren’t of importance to us but we want to win it. The region games are more important than any game we play,” Ethridge said.

Even with a 14-4 record during the second half of the season, the players know they still have challenges ahead.

“We just need to pick it up, keep playing together and working hard,” Hutson said.

Start of a new era for new coaching staff Goodrich becomes new head coach JASON JAMISON STAFF WRITER When head coach Tony Dattoli stepped down Nov. 11, 2013 as the Archers baseball coach, Scott Goodrich stepped up to take on a new role with the team.

“I’m up for the challenge,” Goodrich said.

After 11 years as an assistant coach for the Archers, Goodrich said that he is most looking forward to leading by example and that his coaching philosophy is straight-forward.

“Let players play. We want to play hard, smart, aggressive baseball,” Goodrich said. “We’ll run freshman out there and give them a chance to be successful, and at the same time it allows them a chance to deal with adversity.”

Goodrich said his players will compete against each other in practice and that playing time will be earned.

Goodrich has lived and breathed since his childhood. He wanted the game to be a part of his career.

Sports are a part of Goodrich’s family life, as well. His wife was a collegiate softball player; he has two daughters, ages 14 and 10,

and a 5-year-old son, all of whom are involved in competitive sports.

“The game was always part of me. Everyone’s playing days are numbered. I knew that, so I wanted to find a way to keep from separating from the game

altogether,” Goodrich said. “I always wanted to transition to coaching; it made it easier when my playing days came to an end.”

Since many sophomore players are familiar with Goodrich as assistant coach, the transition

has been smoother than expected, according to Sophomore Catcher Kyle Nuetzel. “The biggest difference is that communication used to be with coach Dattoli and now it’s with coach Goodrich,” Nuetzel said.

Nuetzel said Goodrich is a players’ coach, not just on the field but off the field as well.

“He has first-hand life experience, so outside of home I would definitely go to coach for advice,” Nuetzel said.

Goodrich said that he wants to instill in his players preparation and adaptation, not just in the game of baseball, but preparation and adaptation in all walks of life.

Goodrich said he is a coach who wants to endow his team with sportsmanship, respect for the game and baseball fundamentals, but he also wants to build with them, a foundation on which they can be successful long after their Archers careers are over.

Some players new to the program have taken notice.

“He wants to make us men first,” Freshman Pitcher Austin Meiny said. “Baseball players second.”
