Students Leave La Quinta

Montclair State students that once resided in the LaQuinta Inn now have a home on campus starting this semester.

According to Jeanine Stroh, ­­­associate director of budget and residential services, administrators discovered enough space to house all of the La Quinta residents, enabling them to relocate. “We were very pleased to be able to accommodate the students back on campus,” she said.

“It is better for the residents because now they all can truly have an on-campus college experience, especially freshmen,” said Adenford Jean-Philippe, senior.

Jean-Philippe was a community assistant at the La Quinta Inn. It was his responsibility, along with fellow community assistants, service assistants and community directors, to talk to residents directly. Residents received letters, as well.

University Police issued warrants for the arrest of Romarick Hough of Boilingbrook, IL, in regards to the Nikki Minaj concert scam that occurred in September 2010. Hough is being charged with 3rd degree Theft by Deception, 3rd degree Impersonation, and 4th degree Securing Execution of Documents by Deception. The warrants were filed through Little Falls Municipal Court.

Snow

The campus community experienced a wintry mix creating icy and slushy paths and roads.

Though the University experienced a delayed opening with the university opening at 10 a.m., students felt preparations were not adequate.

Milana Ayers, Stone Hall resident said, “I had class at 10 a.m., which unfortunately was not cancelled. It literally took me 10 minutes to walk from Stone to University Hall. I mean I could have walked faster if I wanted to fall, but I took my time so I wouldn't be soaking wet going to my class.�

Dr. Timothy Carey, Assistant Vice President for Facilities Services, said, “The Grounds Services department utilizes a planned approach to address snow and ice events.�

"The Snow Plan, which we will be posting to our website in the near future, details the priority order of locations for removing snow/ice, the equipment and supplies that are utilized and

the contingencies that are in place in the event of equipment failures, extreme weather conditions, etc.,� said Dr. Carey.

And I didn't start to see people putting salt until after 2 p.m. when I was at my desk shif,� said Ayers. “It was so dangerous walking and I'm surprised

school was even open because it looked like they did absolutely nothing.

Dangerous and inconvenient was the feel of campus after the storm; particularly the puddle paths by the flagpoles near the student center.

Dr. Carey explained the path situation. “Although the overall goal is to remove snow/ice and treat all walkways, roads, steps, etc. to ensure that entire campus is as safe as possible, the first priority is to maintain the main roadways into and out of the campus so that emergency vehicles are accommodated, and shuttle buses are able to continue to maintain service to the student community,� said Dr. Carey. “Just because classes don't start until 10 a.m. doesn't mean they shouldn't try to clear the path beforehand,� expressed Ayers.

Tajh Miller had an 8:30 a.m. class that was cancelled; however said, “I was sliding the entire time when I was walking to the bookstore. It felt like

one false move and I was going to slip and fall."

Dr. Carey commented, “The storm on January 18th (the initial day of the current semester) was largely an ice event, which is the most challenging of all winter storms."

"It necessitated far more manual labor, rock salt and ice-melting products than storms that are exclusively snow events. Knowing that ice was in the forecast, plans were adjusted accordingly,� said Dr. Carey.

With another stowstorm around the corner on Thursday night, hopefully the plan will be more effective.

Hawk Crossings, The Village, Sinatra Hall, or the Children’s Center to experience the outage for themselves, were notified via text message and e-mail from Residential Education and Services and other administrators.

The New Jersey Transit Deck was also impacted by this shortage, as cars were unable to exit or enter the deck.

Michelle Agnone, Village resident, said, “I just walked into the bathroom and was about to use the mirror, but then when the lights went out and I couldn't even see myself.”

The power outage impacted all electrical units in the residence halls. “My roommate was cooking on the stove when the power went out, and of course the stove stopped working because it's electric,” said Agnone. “I was worried about my food in my refrigerator and freezer spoiling.”

Agnone felt that the campus administration left students in their residence halls out in the dark. “I was worried, because even though we got e-mails and texts from the school, they didn't say approximately when the power should be back up,” said Agnone.

Experiencing the power outage in Hawk crossings, Marvin Osselin said,

“I was laying down watching television and charging my phone and it all just went out. It flickered on, then back off, and didn't come back on until like an hour ago.”

“It didn't bother me because I went out, but when I came back I realized the heat was connected to the power and it got cold,” said Osselin.

Village resident Juliana Szutarski was concerned about the impact that the cold weather would have. She said, “I'm very concerned about the cold temperature and the notoriety of Village pipes bursting during the winter. I'll be very upset to come home to a flooded apartment and ruined belongings.”

Fortunately, power was restored around before residents became antsy for dinner as Residential Education and Services explained, “The power failure occurred off-campus, and was caused by conditions beyond the control of the University. The utility service provider responded promptly and was able to resolve the problem."

After informing the residents, administrators did not waste any time getting them into on-campus housing. Stroh said, “Students were placed immediately, and notified, as bed spaces became available.”

Residents were also offered “early arrival opportunities to move in,” she said.

Resident Anna McCabe, once a LaQuinta resider, was shifted to Blanton Hall this semester. "The school told us the hotel was closing through an e-mail the Saturday before finals week," said McCabe. "I remember thinking, 'I have to study, how am I going to pack up this whole room?'"

While enjoying the perks of now living

in Blanton Hall, McCabe said, "I really enjoyed the hotel, it was quiet, I had free parking, a queen sized bed, and a huge room. But living there made me feel very disassociated from MSU and as a transfer, that's the last thing I wanted."

"I've only lived in Blanton for a few days, but I think the positives of living on campus far outweigh the positives that LaQuinta had," said McCabe.

"Unfortunately the way the situation was handled by the administration made me arrive on a bad note," said McCabe.

No students were left displaced and have been housed for the semester.

“Overall, Residential Education did what they could to make the process as smooth as possible,” said Jean-Philippe.

Next year will not only mark the start of residents living in new a dorm complex, The Heights, but it will also be the first time that the housing application fee will be increased to $300.

Compared to last year's fee of $125, the figure has more than doubled.

“If anything, the fee should've gone down due to the fact that The Heights will be open and more people will be living on campus,” said sophomore resident Joseph Caldwell.

Dr. Kathleen Ragan explained, “All students requesting housing must pay a housing application fee in the amount of $300 and complete the on-line bed selection or application process. If a student is assigned to housing, the entire fee will be credited to the student’s University account.

“If a student is not assigned to University housing, or cancels within five days after notice is sent by the University to the student regarding his/her room assignment, a portion of the housing application fee in the amount of $175 will be returned to the student,” said Dr. Ragan.

While a bit more than half will be returned if housing is not given to a student, or a student cancels within five days, students are finding it difficult to come up with the $300 before March 3, the deadline for the application fee.

“This fee is ridiculous,” said resident Darlene Arias. “The increase is probably due to all of the new buildings.”

“I feel that this is too much money and I'm thinking of not even dorming next semester,” said Ana Puntiel, sophomore. “It's more than double the amount it usually is and many of us, especially me, don't have this type of money.”

Regulations dealing with housing cancellations have been tightened as

well.

In an e-mail sent by Residential Education and Services the policy states: “Cancellation requests will only be granted for one of the following three conditions: Mid-year graduation, study abroad or withdrawal from the University. Housing cancellation requests will no longer be granted for any other reason. Therefore, please sit down with your family to ensure you will be able to cover the financial obligation of living on campus for the entire academic year.

The contract is a year long obligation, and it is legally binding.”

“I didn't pay the fee yet. I don't think they should have increased it. I feel like we're paying for all of the construction going on and not improving what we have,” said resident Christine Leonardis.

"I don't know if I'm living on campus or not next year," said current Hawk Crossings resident Kasie Rosario.

"On top of all the money we pay at this school, we should not have the fee raised to $300," said Rosario, "especially because some of the apartments have mold or heat issues that still haven't been fixed."

Many students have decided to opt out of the housing fee all-together and plan on living off campus.

Current Blanton Hall resident David Chevestick said, "I'm going to try and get an apartment off campus, but if that falls through I [plan on] living in the Village."

"I just kind of want to get my own place away from campus," he said "it is a lot more money than it used to be [to live on campus]," said Chevestick.

While many students are not happy with the increase, Residental Education and Services remains adamant.

According to the e-mail: "The application fee will be due no later than Thursday, March 3, 2011, payable via cash, check or credit card at the College Hall Cashier's window, to be eligible for priority room selection."

American Idol comes to MSU

Last night, about 40 students turned out for the American Idol premier viewing party from 8 to 10 p.m., organized by C.S.I. Students lounged in the chairs and sofas, eating free popcorn and soda.

FOX News reporter Ann Craig made an appearance at 10 p.m. to interview students and get their feedback on the season premier.

SGA treasurer Arun Bhambri said, “This [turnout] is just from one day of advertising on campus. It's really great.” He explained that if they had more time to advertise the event, there probably would have been an even better turnout.

“I came here because I saw the popcorn and American Idol playing on the T.V” - Ivan Puente, a senior Puente observed, “There are more guys here than girls, it's pretty crazy!”

“It's a pretty good idea. We don't have anything else where people can watch something together. It's pretty awesome.”

This is such a common issue in so many relationships, especially ones that are long term, and there are many things that can be done to bring the excitement back into your love life, but it takes the willingness of both parties.

If your relationship is new and you are already having issues keeping things spicy, then you may need to reevaluate your connection.

Sometimes two people can be in love and happy with each other, but they just do not click physically. This may be fixable, though.

There is a good chance that either one or both of you is just a little shy or reserved and needs the other person to help you come out of your shell. Talking before, during and after sex, and sometimes just randomly mentioning things that you enjoy, can work this out.

Its sleek and stylish look was what first attracted me to it. The Fascinate has an all-touch screen with only four visible touch buttons located at the bottom of the screen. They are easily accessible and lock with the touch of a button.

With all new touch-screen phones comes a lock button. The Fascinate’s button is located on the side of the phone and locking it prevents pocket calls. You can easily lock and unlock the screen or set a lock mode on your

phone so it locks automatically after a few seconds.

One of the best parts of having the Fascinate is the Android Operating System. It’s fast and able to multitask, unlike other Smartphones. You can download apps, browse the web and text all at the same time.

App downloading is quick and easy and usually downloads in 30 seconds or less. You can download games, background pictures for your home screen, ringtones or email sync. A great app that I’ve discovered is “Advanced Task Killer,” which turns off all of your unused apps. This saves you battery life in the long run.

Another great thing about having the Fascinate is the four-inch screen. Other Smartphones force you to squint at the screen or zoom in. The bigger screen helps to view larger websites and see more e-mails in a single window.

The Swype function, which is available with the Fascinate, can be used to type out e-mails, text messages and other data faster than the normal keypad. Instead of tapping the screen with every letter, you can drag your finger across the touch keypad to spell out words faster.

This is my favorite function of the Fascinate. In one minute, I can Swype “Facebook.com” into the browser, update my status and check up on friends.

When you’re on the go, Swype makes life so much easier.

The camera comes equipped with an LED flash. Unlike some other Smartphones, the Fascinate is great for taking pictures. The 5.0 megapixel camera takes high-definition pictures and the big screen helps with clear picture taking as well.

I would rate this phone four out of five stars rather than the full five because of the GPS navigation. It’s not always accurate and sometimes it loses your signal or lags. Other than that, I would say this phone is perfect for any student looking to keep track of e-mails and their social life.

For someone like me with eyebrows on the shorter and lighter side, I thought this would have to be one beauty trend I would sadly have to live without. Whether you have the same conundrum or know someone who does, Anastasia Soare has ever so graciously come up with a perfect solution.

How Can I Stick to My New Year’s Resolution After I Have Made One? He Said

If you haven’t broken your New Years Resolution already, consider yourself quite persistent. January 17, or the third Monday in January, many researchers have found, is statistically the most depressing day of the year.

This is partly caused by the massive amount of broken New Year’s resolutions, among many other factors. If you are sad because you broke a promise to yourself, don’t feel glum.

Others are going through the same thing. As if that’s supposed to make us feel better, right? Here are a few tips for those of you that really want to get back on track: 1. Take it slow. The one thing we all do have is time. If it’s a longterm goal like losing weight, meeting a significant other or improving your grades, treat it like a long-term

goal.

Doing all the little things that together move you toward a happier you.

Going ballistic because you gained a pound isn’t going to help. Exercise comes in many surprising forms as well. Playing ping-pong, taking walks or even playing new-generation type video games that require you to move your body help much more than you think it does. A half hour a day is much better than nothing.

2. Make lists. I find that whenever I want to be productive, making lists gives me more motivation. It also helps with time management. Make a list of anything you can that will help you achieve your goal. Remember: small steps first. A small reward upon completion of an entire list is not a bad idea either.

3. Safety in numbers. If you are having a lot of trouble staying the course, consider finding a person or people who have the same resolution. Try family or close friends. You can support each other or even make it a competition. When people do things together, it’s more likely that they won’t quit or give up as easily as doing it alone.

One could go on and on with other various tips, but the main point in all of them would be motivation. If these tips don’t help you, just think about the ways you can motivate yourself to achieve what you want. Motivation is key in almost every aspect of life.

The New Year sparks the desire to make New Year’s resolutions. Although many people decide what they would like their resolution to be, they often fail to make a commitment, so here are a few pointers to stay on the right track and kick off the New Year.

1. Be Realistic. While I’m sure we would all like to jump start the year by putting an end to all of our bad habits, some things are easier said than done.

By having multiple resolutions, a person may be less likely to succeed. So instead of attempting to give up smoking, drinking and losing weight all at once, try focusing on one resolution so you will be more likely to stick to it. It’s far more satisfying to succeed in one goal than it is to do poorly in a few. So pick the one that is most important to you.

2. Be Specific. When deciding on a goal for the New Year, make sure it’s clear. If you’re planning to lose weight,

establish exactly how much you would like to lose, when you would like to lose it by and why.

The amount of weight desired will also affect your schedule and the likelihood you’ll actually lose it. Trying to lose 30 pounds before a wedding in a month is not only unrealistic, but also unhealthy. Take into consideration the flexibility of your diet and schedule and pick a time line that is practical for you. Instead of saying what you would like to do, say what you’re going to do and how you plan to do it.

3. Grab a Friend. The New Year is the easiest time to find someone willing to join you in reaching your goal. Nearly everyone makes resolutions, so find a friend and be each other’s support system.

See if they are interested in dieting with you, or try to set up a joint schedule to work out, etc. With a friend, you are more likely to stick to your commitment.

Also, try to avoid situations that may tempt you to walk down the wrong path. If you’re trying to quit drinking, hanging out at bar is not the best choice, unless you can be satisfied with a glass of soda while your friends are taking shots.

It’s all about self control and will power. If you want something bad enough, following through should not be a problem.

recent study printed

by USA Today has proposed that students nationwide feel as though their first two years of college were a waste of time.

Three-thousand fulltime students were polled in the survey and the result of this sample was the foundation the article was built on.

At first glance, 3,000 students seems like a decent variation of experience, but this supposed ”random sample” was spread out over 29 campuses.

Basically, the claim that the article made was that students did not retain any information from their first years in college.

Instead, these young adults neglected their quest for knowledge and spent the majority of their time in college socializing.

In the article, college students spent 51 percent of their day “socializing, recreating, other.”

Aside from our general disagreement with the results of the survey, we would also like to dispute the implications associated with the claim that students did not learn anything from their first two years of college.

Sure, we have all been in class

with the students that clearly couldn’t care less for the subject matter.

We are all far too familiar with the student that sleeps during class and spends the entire lesson with their head tilted down, lightly tapping away on their phones.

But to use such a small amount of students as the ultimate support for an argument is a bit ridiculous.

We find it hard to believe that students did not learn anything from the first half of their college career.

We have factored in that most students try to get their Gen eds out of the way the first two years of college, but these are meant to stimu-

late a well-rounded foundation of knowledge.

There are few people that actually enjoy taking that mandatory computer class. Yet, it is hard to deny that all of the gen eds are a “waste of time.”

Various members of our staff have learned a lot about different cultures, weather patterns, basic human functions and new languages in these classes. They are meant to enrich your experience by necessity.

The simple question remains: If you aren’t in college for yourself then why are you here at all?

Mainstream cinema commonly glorifies college as a realm of par-

ties and irresponsibility, with a dash of comically terrible decisions.

We hate to rain on everyone’s obscure parade, but college is meant to stimulate your mind.

Don’t attend college if you just want to appease your parents.

The responsibility of self-expansion is what you make of your experience in college and there will always be those people that do care and those that don’t.

Which leads us back into the article published by the USA Today.

There are far too many factors involved in what students get out of their first few years in college.

What were the majors of the students polled? Were they participants in any sort of program? And most importantly, do they even care about their college education?

We suggest that a much larger scale survey is in order. This particular article has generated a fair amount of attention from a plethora of news outlets.

People are shocked by the claim that students roll their eyes at their college education.

Initially, we fell prey to the results of the survey but after taking a second glance at the students at Montclair State we made our own conclusions: students do indeed absorb a fair amount during their first two years of college.

Members of our staff even began their major intensive courses the beginning of their second year at Montclair.

The question of what students gain from two years at college is based purely on personal experience.

We all learn something from our college classes but whether it is retained subconsciously or consciously makes little difference.

Just think back to what you knew in high school and what you know now. Whether you want to admit it or not, there is a vast difference in general awareness and intelligence.

College can expand your mind, but only if you let it.

What it shows is that now, more than ever, we need to stand together as a singular, unified people working towards a nation of progress and prosperity, not struggling for our own individual class advancement, money and power.

We have decided it is easier to live our lives in the turtle shells that we call class or property or assets and hold our paper money umbrellas over our heads hoping for the storm to pass, all the while turning a blind eye to social injustices that can be too easily labeled as “someone else’s problem.”

For too long we have focused our energy on keeping up with the Joneses when, in reality, we should be helping the Joneses and the Smiths, the Martinezes and the Garcias, the Fenstermachers, the Delmontes, and everyone in between to live happier and safer lives.

There can be no progress when we are only driven by personal gain and it takes acts of supreme violence to motivate us.

In Obama’s memorial speech for the Tucson shooting, he reminded us that we can never be politically, economically, or even morally strong when we are divided and that, if we want anything to change, we should communicate “in a way that heals; not in a way that wounds.”

A time for healing is far overdue.

King Tut Stars in Return of the Mummy The value of cultural exposure as King Tut nears the end of his visit to N.Y.

hen discussing ancient Egyptians, the first thought that springs to mind is their elaborate belief in the afterlife.

From early childhood, we have learned about the great pyramids and burial practic-

Upon burial, corpses would be prepared with a plethora of treasures and items that they thought would be useful in eternal afterlife.

They also believed that if your name lived on beyond your own passing, eternal life would be an absolute delight.

They believed in an association of fame as an everlasting entity.

With that being said, King Tutankhamen should be after-living quite wonderfully these days.

The 3,000 year old mummy, otherwise known by his more common name, King Tut, will be returning to his homeland after being in the United States for five and a half years.

He has toured eight different cities since his arrival in this country, and drawn nearly 8 million visitors and spectators.

King Tut is one of the most famous corpses, and has travelled more in death than most people do during their lifetime.

But what makes this defunct Pharaoh so noteworthy? Why is he the only ruler of Ancient Egypt with a household name? And face for that matter?

It probably has less to do with his ruling techniques than one might think.

King Tut’s fame can be largely attributed to the condition in which his remains were found.

The Pharaoh’s tomb was unearthed in 1922 by Howard Carter and George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon.

They found the tomb nearly completely

intact, a shocking discovery that received worldwide press coverage.

King Tut’s notability can also be partially attributed to his face. He has one of the most easily recognizable faces out there, plastered on posters and art history textbooks around the globe.

This is due to his nearly perfect anatomical proportions, according to the mask of his mummy.

Aside from his slightly elongated head, which was an anatomical tradition of ancient Pharaohs, and plausible partial cleft palette, he was thought to be one hunk of a ruler.

Though his youthfulness was certainly a factor, considering one of his most common nicknames is “the Boy King,” having died at the age of only 19.

Currently, King Tut’s exhibit can be found in Manhattan but it will only remain in this location for a few more days.

Then it’s off to his nation of origin, Egypt, where a special, recently completed museum has been constructed to house only the deceased Pharaoh and his accessories.

The museum is located in Giza, which is on the west bank of the Nile River, about 20 kilometers from Cairo.

It is the third largest city in Egypt and its population makes it the second largest suburb in the world.

It is also home to the most famous and easily recognized pyramids, the Pyramids of Giza, and the equally famous Great Sphinx.

All of which are pinnacles of Egypt’s rich history.

I would urge anyone and everyone to see this exhibit during its final days in the United States, before the opportunity is far less convenient.

I firmly believe in the value of multicultural experience. New York is only a short train ride away from Montclair — there is absolutely no reason why students should not take the initiative and view this manifestation of ancient history.

It is all too easy to let a once in a lifetime opportunity pass you by. Don’t let laziness prevail over a genuine spectacle.

Worrisome Winter Woes

hen coming back to school to start a new semester, you usually walk around with your mind set on keeping up with your classes and having a positive attitude this Jade Leach time around.

Columnist Of course, your first few days are full of professors handing out syllabi and friends asking the same questions when seeing you for the first time in a month, “How was your break?” or “What did you do during the winter break?”

Your answers may vary from, “Nothing, I just relaxed,” to “I worked most of the time,” or “I took a course during the break.”

These responses reflect how you chose to manage your time as a student during your vacation from school.

Should the three and half weeks that are known as “winter break” be a time of pure relaxation or do we as students feel the pressure to get something accomplished?

Accomplishments may include getting a part time job, working on a separate project, or taking on another class.

And if the time spent at home during your winter break includes relaxation, should students feel guilty for not getting anything accomplished?

Personally, people have asked me what I did over the break and my response included working most of the time and starting an internship.

But what about the students who don’t know how to respond because they didn’t do much of anything?

Should they feel guilty about taking time off to do absolutely nothing?

I don’t know what the typical response would be, but if you ask my opinion, then the answer is, “No. Of course not!”

As students, we bear a heavy burden throughout the semester.

It doesn’t matter whether this includes completing work as full time students, taking on internships, keeping a social life and possibly working a part-time job.

The pressures of doing well in college are enough to give any concerned student a fair amount of anxiety.

So what’s wrong with taking a vacation for a few weeks? We are coming back to school to do it all over again, right?

As students, we should not feel the need to rush towards getting everything done immediately.

Before you know it this urgency will be a mandatory task as adults that we’re going to have to take on everyday.

Nonetheless, if you do decide to take an additional class, or start a part-time job during your break, then more power to you!

Taking the initiative to engage in an additional activity during your vacation time just shows that you’re eager to push yourself, which is always a good thing on your behalf.

It can also benefit you once you graduate, depending on what kind of additional activities you involve yourself in.

After all, you can only learn time management through trial and error.

Listen, whether or not we students take part in doing “something” during winter break doesn’t make that much of a difference.

We’re college students! We deserve a break.

Dealing with four or more professors constantly giving out multiple assignments at the same time, managers at part-time jobs, internships, midterms, finals, and additional stress from other factors ought to be a worthy enough justification to relax for three weeks.

Break was our time to take it easy and I say we take advantage and simply enjoy it, because once we graduate, we won’t be able to relax for an extended amount of time.

Comic creator Chris Eliopoulos’ most recent work, Avengers vs Pet Avengers, is currently tearing up the comic book world. He is everything you could ever hope for in a writer, and he is fantastically nice to a fault. He recently spoke to The Montclarion about the methods to his creative nature.

Q: You’re the author of the hugely successful Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius series of books. How did you decide to go with Franklin?

A: At the time, the current president of Marvel told me that he liked my work with Image [on Desperate Times] and he asked me to pitch a story to editorial. The Fantastic Four have always been one of my favorite teams in comics and I just love the idea of the parents flying off, saving the world and leaving all these fantastic hi-tech devices around for Franklin to “not touch.”

I pitched it to editorial, they liked it, and I think the rest of the story is history from there.

Q: Your characters are some of the most unique I’ve come across in a while. How do you go about creating them?

A: What I like to do is find a personality trait and then expand on it, similar to how sitcoms do it – there’s a character who hates spending money, a stupid character, things like that. Then I start playing them off each other to create the character interaction.

As far as the way they look, I just get out my sketchbook

and after 15 or so pages of sketches, something will start looking right to me and then I just go from there. There’s no moment of sudden revelation in this process, just work.

Q: You’ve been around for a while, a little over 20 years in the business. What were some of your influences?

A: When I was a kid, I read Charles Schulz constantly so Peanuts is a big influence on me. Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes, all those old 1950s Disney cartoons, and even the people I work with.

They’ve all got such amazing talents and I learn from each of them. I worked with Erik Larsen on Savage Dragon for a while and I learned a lot of stuff about storytelling, panel layout, and a lot of other stuff.

Q: How’d you get started at Marvel and in general?

A: I went to Fashion Institute of Technology and majored in graphic design. My parents and I made a pact that they wouldn’t pay for me to go to school just for cartooning, but that there was a better chance with graphic design. During this, I had a night class with Gene Cullen who took us on a field trip to Marvel, which led to me getting an internship where I spent half the week in production and half in editorial—I learned a lot there. After my internship, I got some freelance work from them and when I graduated I worked there for two and a half years. Then I moved up to lettering and found that I was making more money after I went home doing freelance lettering than I was during my day job at Marvel and I quit.

I worked doing a backup for Marvel Age magazine, a calendar that I wrote and drew for a while, then I moved on

to working with Erik Larsen on Savage Dragon, lettering and eventually doing a backup there. That led to my Image book [Desperate Times] which I made as a solo effort.

Q: In the back pages of Casanova, Matt Fraction wrote about how he would have to justify comics to his kids one day and how it’s affected him as a writer. What I want to know is how has having children and being a father affected you as a creator?

A: I started doing Franklin Richards for my kids, actually.

Back in the 1960s and early 1970s, comics were for everyone, and since then they’ve expanded to become more adult.

They cater a lot more to the hardcore fans, the ones who know all of the continuity and there’s a severe lack of comics for the younger set of readers.

I knew that and I wanted to

make something that I could share with my kids without having any of the mature themes, just innocent comics.

Q: What advice do you have for the young people that want to break into the comics industry?

A: Work day and night. Get an internship in one of the larger companies. Do a lot of samples of your work, if you’re an artist.

The best way to get your stuff noticed is to actually do a book with your own original characters and plot and give it to editors—at conventions, on the train, anywhere is fine. Most editors can’t read unsolicited text, but there’s nothing stopping them from reading a comic published by someone other than their company. Getting into this business is nothing more than a lot of hard work.

Exclusive Montclarion Q&A with Jonny Fairplay Notorious Sur vi vor Fo e Loves to be Hated Ken Macri Staff Writer

CBS’s Survivor has been one of the biggest reality shows on television for the past 10 years. There have been many great contestants on the show, some villains and some heroes. Jonny Fairplay is arguably the greatest villain, not only on Survivor, but in the history of reality television. It was my honor to interview Fairplay regarding his time on Survivor exclusively for The Montclarion.

Q: During your first tenure on Survivor: Pearl Islands, was it easier or harder than you thought it would be from a social standpoint?

A: I didn’t really see it as being hard before I went in, as I was a professional wrestler, which contained a lot of backstage politics, so I strongly felt that I was prepared for the show going in. I didn’t go into Survivor to win the million dollars, I went into the show to create the character of “Jonny Fairplay” and maintain control over that character while on the show. I wanted to make Jonny Fairplay the biggest bad guy in the history of reality TV, and I think I accomplished everything I set out to.

Q: In Survivor: Pearl Islands, what do you feel was your greatest move in the game besides the deceased grandmother lie, which helped you achieve your 3rd place finish?

A: The grandmother lie isn’t really my favorite part of the show. My favorite part and one of my greatest moves on the show was when I got rid of Rupert. To make an alliance with the Morgan Tribe after Rupert was voted out really changed the complexion of the game more than the dead grandmother lie did.

The grandmother lie secured me as the greatest bad guy on TV, and for that I’m thankful as that was my goal going in. Getting rid of Rupert and Burton coming back were the two biggest things to happen in the game. The next day Burton and I talked and he asked, “Why did you get rid of me?” and I said, “Because you were too nice of a guy,” but then we started to talk and formed a great alliance.

Q: You said on Survivor: Fans vs. Favorites that you were learning to be a better person and support your baby, Piper. So have you changed at all from your first term on Survivor when you were simply out to be a villain?

A: That was all a lie, none of that was true. The week before I left for Fans vs. Favorites I had 15 hours of dental surgery and I was on a ton of vicodin.

On the show, they don’t give you any drugs – which I don’t think they should – so I was in a ton of pain, and said to myself, “I have to quit.” My plan was to lie and say I was quitting for my daughter, and the same idiots who believed

the “dead grandmother” lie would believe this lie as well.

You never got the true reveal on Fans vs. Favorites.

Q: Although you were allegedly banned from appearing on Survivor again after quitting Fans vs. Favorites, would you ever consider participating in the show again if asked?

A: Jeff Probst actually put the ban on me before Fans vs. Favorites, so obviously the ban can’t mean too much. I was actually called for Heroes vs. Villains, flew to Los Angeles, got my shots and did all my testing, and a few weeks before I was about to leave I got a call saying that Richard Hatch had not received his passport yet. Richard Hatch. So I guess that puts a hold on me appearing on the show again until Richard Hatch gets his passport.

Q: What was the main life lesson you learned from your time on Survivor?

A: I don’t think I learned any life lessons, as I went on the show simply to become a great villain. Many people go on Survivor to become a better person, but the “bad guy” persona I displayed on TV is my real self, turned up to a higher power for the viewers. So as far as life lessons go, none.

Garfunkel and Oates to Shoot Pilot for HBO Mark Gould Arts & Entertainment Editor

Flight of the what-chords? HBO may have found the next great folk comedy duo. Garfunkel and Oates, composed of female comedians Kate Micucci and Riki Lindhome, have signed a deal to shoot a pilot episode for the popular cable network.

Garfunkel and Oates gained prestige over the past few years by playing charming, quirky folk comedy songs.

Lindhome plays acoustic guitar and takes the role of a composed songstress, while Micucci rocks a ukulele, and often a disarmingly confused facial expression. Lindhome has appeared in various television shows and movies, including a brief stint in Gilmore Girls. You may remember Micucci from her reoccurring role in Scrubs’ eighth season as Stephanie Gooch, love interest of incompetent lawyer Ted Buckland. The show featured a version of Garfunkel and Oates’ “F*ck You,” affectionately reworked to “Screw You.” Micucci has also appeared on the HBO comedy Bored to Death. She was named the #1 woman in comedy in 2009 by G4TV and currently stars

on the FOX TV show Raising Hope.

The pair met during music camp in the fifth grade, and reunited years later in LA’s Upright Citizens Brigade, although they both hail from the tristate area. They have been crafting adorably crude songs ever since, such as “Pregnant Women Are Smug” and “Gay Boyfriend.” The subject material is often sexual, awkward and downright delightful, and their song “Sex With Ducks” has been used in support of gay marriage. Micucci and Lindhome have performed live as a pair several times on The Tonight Show, and are steadily rising in all-important YouTube fame. The new series will be co-written with Richie Keen, who has worked on Important Things with Demetri Martin. They list a previous HBO show about a ditsy rock duo, Flight of the Conchords, as an influence, so expect a similar formula including a healthy dose of awkward conversations and ridiculous plot turns. With any luck, it will soon be business time.

In the upcoming year, Garfunkel and Oates will also release a comedy album titled All Over Your Face. A web component in addition to the show is also in the works.

MSU Students Rank High in National Theater Festival

The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, or the KCACTF, was held at Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland from January 11-15. It offers students the chance to compete, participate in workshops and meet different designers in their respective fields in both amateur and professional circuits.

The festival recognizes talents in all theatrical disciplines including acting, directing, playwriting, dramaturgy, stage management, scenic design, costume design, lighting design, and tech craft.

The KCACTF divides the nation into eight regions, MSU being in Region II among other colleges in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia. According to Lauren Pennington, an MSU junior earning her BFA in production design, MSU is very well known in Region II for not only our actors but our production, design and management programs.

Pennington placed first in Region II in the stage management competition for her work in last semester’s “The Seagull” by Anton Checkov, directed by Julie Lawerence.

“I was given an exhibit space where I posted pictures and left my stage management kit, which holds all of my supplies for rehearsal, and my prompt book, which is essentially the Bible for the show,” Pennington said. “It holds all of the important paperwork including blocking, schedules, lighting and sound cues, and all other information.”

D.C. “The interview was very similar to a job interview regarding the way I work as well as my strengths and weaknesses. There were four other respondents in lighting design, scenic design, props and costumes, who then reviewed my presentation and gave me amazing feedback.” Pennington will move on to compete at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. this April.

Carla Ramos, another junior and BFA production design major, won the Regional award for excellence in scenic design. When asked about her experience in the competition, Ramos said, “There were 16 other entries in my field. I had to set up a display with my entire process for my scenic design for “The Seagull” that was produced at Montclair in the fall. It included a scale model, draftings, paint eleva-

tions, concept paintings and sketches.

In the judging process, we had to do an interview portion and also our display and design were judged on their own.”

The MSU students that participated in this year’s festival emphatically described it as much more than a theater competition. “It is a great learning experience to go to the festival and see what other schools are up to,” said Ramos.

The Montclair State Women’s Basketball team pulled off a surprise 64-41 victory over the previously 13-3 Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark Wednesday night at the Panzer Athletic Center.

After coming off a heartbreaking 2 point loss away to Rowan on Saturday, the Red Hawks were lookMSU 64 ing to bounce back RU-Newark 41 with a win against a tough opponent.

Arguably their best performance of the season to date, they stifled a Rutgers-

Newark team that is at the top of the NJAC. The first half was a good indicator of how the rest of the game would go. MSU’s defense limited the Scarlet Raiders offense with relentless defensive pressure, resulting in several turnovers and miscues against Rutgers-Netwark. It got to a point where Rutgers-Newark was even committing the most basic of errors via double dribbles and travels.

Star guard Jaleesa Coleman was limited to a total of seven points in the first half, and even with countless timeouts being taken by Rutgers-Newark head coach Kevin Morris, they were nothing more than vain attempts to alter matters when it ultimately was never going to turn out that way. Montclair State took

care of business in the opening frame, playing opportunistic offense and timely defense to head into halftime with a 27-18 lead.

As the second half began, one could not help but wonder if Montclair State was susceptible to a letdown. It did not happen. If anything, the opposite took place. Montclair State got stronger as the second half went along. On the other side of the spectrum, Rutgers-Newark pretty much fell apart in the final frame.

As Montclair State’s lead grew more and more, so did the timeouts from the Scarlet Raiders. If those breaks in the action were supposed to lead to a fightback from Rutgers-Newark, it failed and failed miserably, as such an act never really seemed to form.

Montclair State’s act was the same in the second half: They simply outworked, outhustled, and outplayed RutgersNewark. Montclair State had three players in double figures (Jamie Ericson with 15 points, Kisandra Ayanbeku with 10 points, and Colleen Kelly with 11). Only Jaleesa Coleman could reach the doublefigure plateau for the Scarlet Knights, with 16 points.

For Montclair State, Wednesday night’s victory represented the zenith of their season in all aspects. Whether this game becomes a springboard for the rest of their 2010-2011 campaign remains to be seen. Montclair State women’s basketball continues their run on Saturday as they host the Lions of TCNJ. Game time is 1 p.m. at the Panzer Athletic Center.

Ice Hockey Wins First Game After Break Jon Fazio Staff Writer

Montclair State hockey came back to the ice after a month off on Winter Break and returned in splendid fashion. Freshman forward Nick Lieback led the way for the Red Hawks, collecting two goals and two assists as they went on to defeat Central Connecticut State University 6-1.

Senior goalie MSU 6 Kevin Fox returned CCSU 1 to play for the Red Hawks after injuring his ankle off the ice in mid-October.

Fox had only missed five games after the injury last semester, but was excited to suit up and get back on the ice with the team.

“Having just three days of practice before CCSU I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to play or not,” Fox said.

“I felt great throughout the week and told the coaches I was ready to go after Thursday’s practice. I settled in real quick after CCSU came out hard against us and after the first period, I was just happy to be back playing with the guys and my ankle felt strong.”

Head Coach Frank Barone was glad to see Fox back in the net as the team came back from break. He knew that Fox was ready to return to his goalie duties after watching him during practices, and after only giving up one goal for the entire game, Coach Barone was more than satisfied with Fox’s performance.

“Having Fox back is big for us,” Coach Barone said. “Watching him play against William Paterson, injured, was gutwrenching. Seeing him play this weekend was a clear indication that he is back and healthy.”

After a week of hard-hitting trash talk, New York-style, the Jets got the last laugh with a 28-21 victory over their division rival, the New England Patriots.

If you missed last Sunday’s nail biter, you must have been living under a rock.

Easily the second most anticipated game of the season (second to the Super Bowl, of course), the Jets returned to Foxboro with a vengeance after their embarrassing loss on Monday Night Football (45-3) just over a month ago.

Jets fans across the tri-state area have been waiting patiently for their time to shine. Making skeptics into believers with their unexpected victory on Sunday, the Jets have talked the talk and walked the walk, proving they are fully prepared to go all the way.

Broadcasting student and loyal Giants fan Kenny Spooner said, “As much as I want to hate on the Jets, you have to give them credit. What they did on Sunday was something to be respected and admired. I wouldn’t mind seeing them go all the way and do it for New York.”

It is safe to say the Jets’ fan base has grown tremendously over the last few months with the hype surrounding their entire season. One fan who has been through good times and bad with this team said it was “no fluke” they won on Sunday in Foxboro. “Rex Ryan wanted to beat this team and Belichick ... he did everything in his power to prepare his team and they showed up to win,” communications major John Trieu said.

“Sanchez stepped up to lead his team to victory in the most meaningful match up of the year.”

New York Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan has been the catalyst for the franchise’s newfound confidence and winning attitude.

The New York Jets are talking themselves up to be huge, and have proved it against two of the league’s best quarterbacks. The Jets took back-to-back wins on the road in the playoffs to advance to the AFC championship game for the second straight season, but the first ended in a loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Rex Ryan and the Jets thought they were the better of the two teams and should have

gone to the Super Bowl, and maybe he was right. The Colts lost to the Saints in an embarrassing move to lose the Super Bowl. He took a personal vendetta to the AFC wild card playoff game against Manning and the Colts this season and shut down the hall-of-fame quarterback for a decisive win.

This only led to an even better AFC Division playoff game — round three of what was thought to be a brawl.

A few weeks earlier the New England Patriots embarrassed the New York Jets 45-3, making the gap between the two seem wider than it really was. Rex Ryan

took another personal vendetta to this game with Tom Brady and the Patriots team as a whole. His players latched on and unleashed a whirlwind of trash talk towards New England. Everyone thought this swagger would only fuel Bill Belichick and Tom Brady’s animosity towards the Jets and have them scheme up another precise game plan that would lead to another humiliating defeat for the Jets. Everyone couldn’t have been more wrong.

Rex Ryan gives the Jets such bravado that they feel they can beat any team they face. Some see this as arrogant and

brash, but it’s really turning out to be superb. Ryan lets his team boast, taunt, brag, celebrate and do almost anything they please because he has a team of players that shine under the New York spotlight. And when the Jets win like they have been, against who they have been beating, it makes them that much harder to beat, because their “we’re better than you and we know it” attitude is that much harder to break.

Ryan has brought a wide range of attention that was never on the Jets before. This attention has the Jets stealing the city away from the New York Giants, and has Empire State Building shining green in support of the Jets rather than the blue that looked to be there earlier in the season. Confidence beat discipline. The Jets topped uptight Giants’ Head Coach Tom Coughlin for the city, and beat apathetic New England’s Head Coach Bill Belichick to reiterate it.

But what goes up must come down.

The Jets need to ride the wave Ryan has them on for as long as they can. Reaching the AFC Championship Game — on the road — with a rookie head coach and a rookie quarterback is amazing, but if the Jets catch an unlucky break and miss the playoffs a few times, there is going to be heavy scrutiny. If the swagger breaks, so does the team. And with the string of negative media attention Ryan has been getting over the course of his two years, he needs to win. Another big slip and a coach with a losing record would have been gone if they supplied the same amount of negative attention that Ryan has brought towards team owner Woody Johnson and the New York Jets.

The Jets are one win away from the Super Bowl and could have the city in an uproar if they were to win. Rex Ryan plays his game and he plays it well; many might not like it, but he accomplishes what he says he’s going to do, no matter how rough it may be.

Brown Reaches NCAA Mark at Gotham Cup Mike Monostra Sports Editor

During his preliminary heat in the 60m hurdles last Friday at the Gotham Cup, MSU runner Will Brown came up two-tenths of a second short of hitting the NCAA provisional qualifier mark.

However, this wouldn’t deter him, as the three-time All-American turned in a time of 8.34 seconds in the 60m hurdles finals, hitting the NCAA provisional qualifying mark and putting him on track to return to the national championships.

Success in the hurdles is nothing new for Brown. In 2009, he was the indoor 55m hurdle national champion, turning in a time of 7.39 seconds. Last year, Brown returned to nationals to defend his title, finishing in second place in the finals.

Brown’s mark of 8.34 seconds does not

automatically qualify him for the NCAA championships. For an automatic qualification to nationals, he must post a time equivalent to 7.55 seconds in the 55m.

Brown’s time on Friday was equivalent to 7.75 seconds.

Still, Brown sits in an elite group, as he is one of just four Division III hurdlers to make the NCAA’s provisional mark this season. He joins Kyle Gilroy of TCNJ, Kevon Brown of Rutgers-Newark and Tyler Jackson of Washington University.

Brown will have more chances to reach the NCAA automatic qualifying mark before nationals. The Red Hawks are slated to have six more meets this season before the indoor championships on March 11 and 12 at Capital University.

The Red Hawks’ women’s team also had some success at the Gotham Cup. Montclair’s 4x4000 relay team reached the ECAC Championship qualifying mark

with a time of 4:07.58.

The team consists of sophomore Ashadaya Patterson, freshman Michelle McNulty, freshman Krystal Ellis and sophomore Heather Gearity. With the exception of Patterson, it will be the first time at the ECAC championships for the group. They are the fifth relay team to qualify for ECACs, joining Ramapo, Williams, TCNJ, and Bridgewater State.

The mark set by the team at the Gotham Cup is their best so far this season. They are about eight seconds off of the NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:59.50.

The Red Hawks’ men’s and women’s teams hope to set more qualifying marks this week. The men’s team will be competing in the Great Dane Classic at The Armory in New York City on Friday; meanwhile, the women’s team will travel to Ursinus College on Friday to compete in the Collegeville Classic.

Red Hawks Leap Past RU-Newark MSU 82 RU-Newark 72

Junior Andrew August led the way with 24 points as Montclair State men’s basketball team came up with a crucial 82-72 win over division rival RutgersNewark last night at the Panzer Athletic Center.

The win propelled MSU to a 4-2 record in the NJAC, allowing them to pass Rutgers-Newark for second place in the North Division. The Scarlet Raiders fell to 4-3 with their loss to the Red Hawks.

The game was a battle between teams that play different styles of basketball.

Averaging over 81 points per game this season, RutgersNewark had been shooting very well from the perimeter heading into last night’s contest.

“We had to try and get out on them and make sure that every shot was an uncomfortable shot,” MSU head coach Ted Fiore said.

MSU countered offensively with a physical, inside attack led by August and senior Tyrone Prewitt. Against a smaller Rutgers-Newark lineup, the duo outmuscled the Scarlet Raiders on the insides. August put up 10 points and four rebounds in the first half while Prewitt

chipped in seven points and six rebounds.

The Scarlet Raiders did not have an answer for the aggressive Red Hawk offense in the first half, as MSU baited Rutgers-Newark into foul trouble early. This helped spark a 10-1 Montclair run in the first half to give them a 19-5 lead.

In the first half alone, Montclair had 16 points in the paint compared to just eight from the Scarlet Raiders. The solid rebounding by the Red Hawks also kept RutgersNewark from getting too many second chance opportunities.

These factors contributed to a 43-30 MSU lead at halftime.

The Red Hawks continued to control the flow of the game early in the second half, pushing their lead to as much as 20 points with six minutes to go.

The final six minutes, however, saw Rutgers-Newark make a late comeback attempt. The Scarlet Raiders went on an 11-1 run to get back within ten points of MSU. “We got a little sloppy,” Fiore said. “We gave them turnovers that created baskets.”
