Montclair’s very own John J. Cali School of Music hosted the U.S. Senate debate on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012. The debate between Democratic incumbent

Sen. Robert Menendez and his opponent, Republican State Sen. Joe Kyrillos, was broadcast on several news aggregates including NJTV, WBGO, WNYC and C-SPAN. Moderated by Mike Sch-

neider of NJTV, the two candidates debated over several hot button topics, including Medicare, tax cuts, national debt, foreign policy and abortion.

Susan Cole, in her introduction to the debate, gave

a message to the student body: “I encourage students here and throughout the state to be actively engaged in considering the issues and the candidates and to participate in the electoral process.”

Kyrillos was the first to give his opening statement, painting himself as a product of the American Dream and a man who stands for progression in the Senate.

However, many students are claiming there were no notifications from the university that their cars would be towed.

According to Parking Services, a sign was placed in the lot letting students know that their cars would

be towed for the car show if they remained in the lot, but there was no campus wide e-mail sent. These students claimed they did not see the sign.

The morning of the car show, their cars were ticketed and towed from the lot.

Students then had to pay to get their cars out of the im-

pound lots they were being held in.

However, an even bigger shock came when students realized that the impound lots were closed over the weekend. As a result, students had to wait until Monday to get their cars.

The Red Hawk Diner has been the on-campus place to go for late night meals with friends for over a decade now. With their delicious shakes topped with mountains of whipped cream, and curly fries that make mouths drool, how could anyone resist? Their reasonably priced American cuisine has appealed to students since its opening, and to this day has seen a constant flow of business and hungry stomachs.

Who Else Can "Like" Your Status?

New study shows admissions offices can check your posts

Other peers aren't the only people who take a look at your Facebook Wall.

In today’s tech-savvy society it’s almost impossible to find a college student who doesn’t have at least one active account with a social-networking site. But the costs of having multiple accounts with these sites may soon outweigh the benefits.

Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are only some of the many sites that college admissions officers are scanning to see if the way a student presents his/herself on their college application matches their behavior on their private pages.

It may seem reasonable for employers to use social networking sites as a tool to decide whether a potential employee is qualified for the job, but is it right for college admissions officers to determine if you will be a good student by what’s

on your Facebook page?

A recent survey conducted by Kaplan Test Prep shows that every year schools are discovering more harmful material through Facebook and Google. This negatively portrays prospective students and decreases their chances of acceptance.

The results of the survey discovered that while the number of college admissions officers’ looking at these sites has only slightly increased, the amount of damaging information found on these pages has drastically increased from 12 to 35 percent this year.

Jeff Olson, Vice President of Data Science for Kaplan Test Prep, explains that a few years ago social media meant looking at just one or two major websites (Myspace, Facebook) but now students are able to socialize through various channels.

This increase in social media has

therefore increased the level of comfortability students have with sharing parts of their personal lives.

“We’re seeing a growing cultural ubiquity in social media use, plus a generation that’s grown up with a very fluid sense of privacy norms.

In the face of all these trends, the rise in discovery of digital dirty laundry is inevitable,” Olsen said.

While some students like junior Linda Ly believe that, like a prospective job, colleges “have a right to eliminate any applicant who is unqualified to represent their school,” others don’t think that their “dirty laundry” should be a determining factor in a university’s decision to accept or decline their application.

“It’s absolutely inappropriate!

You cannot tell what kind of student a person is by looking at their social networking page. A kid who is a party animal could be a great student on his/her way to becoming

a great doctor or lawyer. You really can’t judge a person by their page,” said senior Leslie Bretzger.

Olson, however, believes that sites like Facebook and Instagram simply provide a more raw, uncensored look at an applicant’s life.

“With regard to college admissions, the traditional application, the essays, the letters of recommendation, represent the polished version of an applicant, while often what’s found online is a rawer version of that applicant. Schools are philosophically divided on whether an applicant’s digital trail is fair game, and the majority of admissions officers do not look beyond the submitted application, but our advice to students is to think first, Tweet later,” he said.

Up until early September of this semester, on-campus transportation offered a shuttle stop in front of the diner. However, due to recent construction, this semester the shuttle stop has been relocated to University Hall, rendering the diner stop desolate.

Though manager Billy Ibrahimm and employees of the Red Hawk Diner have not noticed a severe lack of business, they have noticed a slight change in its customer base. With construction nearby, the diner has seen business from the construction workers each morning. Whether it be for a cup of coffee or a chocolate chip muffin, construction workers can be seen in the early hours of the morning at the Red Hawk Diner.

Andrew Pignataro, director of Auxiliary Services at MSU, commented about the shuttle stop service to the Diner and how it has affected sales. “Diner sales seem to be in line with budgeted numbers,” Pignataro says. “Since the shuttle service has only been unavailable for about a month now, it has not really affected our sales. How-

ever, due to the construction, we have seen sales increase due to the amount of workers that have come in throughout their day.”

When asked how the Red Hawk Diner compares to the new services expected in Blanton, Ibrahimm responded, “I think that students will naturally be inclined to try the new services over at Blanton. The difference is that once students try it the first time, the second time, and the third, they will eventually come back to the diner because, after all, our 24/7 hours of operation and seating capacity cannot compete with any other dining services found on campus. Our diner offers its customers unique, freshly made meals which are affordable and comforting.”

“I love the diner,” said Lenny Barria, junior. “I think it will still have the same business as it has right now. Most of the other dining services close early and the diner will always be open 24/7.”

It seems as though the Red Hawk Diner at Montclair State University is here to stay, shuttle stop or not.

Throughout the debate, Kyrillos described his opponent as a perpetrator of the pitfalls that have met New Jersey over the past several years.

“If you think things are just fine, that things are okay here in New Jersey and across the land, then you’ll choose my opponent again.

But if you think that unemployment doubling under his watch and the deficit quadrupling is unacceptable, then you’re going to make a change, and you’ll choose me,” said

Menendez, who has served in the U.S. Senate for nearly seven years, responded, “I find it interesting that my opponent would like to cast all the national ills on my doorstep, but he has been in Trenton for 24 years.”

This debate has shown an edgier side of both candidates, who let the bullets fly as they got into each

of the topics. Particularly pressing issues were that of abortion and equal rights among women. Kryillos identified himself as “restricted pro-choice,” meaning that after the second trimester he was against the act of abortion.

Menendez offered a biting ridicule of Kyrillos’ stance, said “We cannot afford [a candidate] who is multiple choice.”

In terms of equal health care for women, Menendez brought up a strident point. “When [Kyrillos] had an opportunity to vote for women in terms of their health care, he not once, not twice, but six times against women’s health care in our state.”

Schneider then prompted Menendez with a question regarding Menendez’s relationship with Gov. Chris Christie, describing it as “chilly.”

“Wouldn’t it be better with one enemy [this being a colleague of Menendez] and one friend [of the governor] in the senate,” said Menendez.

“If I was enemies with the governor, I wouldn’t have helped the governor get one of the best insurance pools under the new Affordable Care Act. His administration asked me to get a good deal from the Department of Human Services, I did.”

Kyrillos responded, “The things you cite with regard to your work with the governor and the state government, those are things that you should do. “ Ultimately, the sides were divided. Their ultimate stands were Kyrillos for change and a set of new policies and ideologies, and Menendez’s experience and purported, refined sense of judgment in U.S. Senate matters.

Know Your Candidates Robert Menendez was sworn into the U.S. Senate on Jan. 18, 2006. Menendez serves on the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance; Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; and Foreign Relations. He is also the Chairman of the Banking Subcommittee on Housing, Transportation and Community Development and the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Peace Corps and Global Narcotics Affairs. Menendez led the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, preserving a Democratic majority in the last election despite the most difficult political environment for Democrats in a generation.

Menendez earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Peter's College and his law degree from Rutgers University. He lives in North Bergen and has two adult children, Alicia and Robert.

Joe Kyrillos began his career of public service when he successfully ran for the New Jersey General Assembly. After two terms, he was elected to the State Senate where he has served since 1992. In 2009, Kyrillos served as chairman of Chris Christie’s campaign for Governor. Through his sponsorship of the State’s Business Incentive program and other economic incentives, he has helped to create thousands of jobs. Kyrillos graduated from Hobart College and holds a Master's Degree from Boston University. He has also had a career in the private sector, and his business experience has helped prepare him for his mission. He, his wife and their two children live in Middletown in Monmouth County.

Towed Continued From Page 1

At the request of Commuter Association Resources and Services (CARS), Parking Services authorized the closure of Lots 23 and 23N for a car show being held on Sept.

30.

According to Facilities Services, a sign was placed on Sept. 26 in Lot 23, indicating that the lot was going to be closed and all vehicles remaining would be towed. On the day of the event, 14 vehicles were towed due to the fact that they had not been relocated to a different lot.

Student Bella Milstein was one of those students whose car was towed. She arrived at the lot to find that all of the cars that were once there were now gone. A friend of Milstein’s informed her they towed everyone’s car because of the car show going on. When Milstein spoke to a police officer, the officer explained that there had been signs indicating there was a car show going on and that the lot would be closed. He then went on to explain barricades were put up closing off the lot.

This came as a shock to Milstein, because there were no barricades up when she parked her car Saturday night after running errands.

Milstein e-mailed Perry Eggleston, Director of Parking Services, in distress and told him that there were no barricades, she saw no signs and her car was towed. He told her that signage had been put up and apologized for not sending a mass e-mail.

Milstein’s car, as well at 13 others, were booted and towed. She had to pay a ticket of $50 and $197

to release her car from the impound lot.

“Not everyone goes to their car that frequently to notice a sign being put up. This is an awful situation and now that I, along with many other residents and commuters, do not have my/their car, tomorrow is going to be a disaster,” stated Milstein in an e-mail to Eggleston.

“Communication is key and I thought we agreed... email was the most efficient way of communicating to such a large community,” said Milstein. “This is not fair to anyone who has to pay these exorbitant fees to get their car back for a fault of parking services not being able to communicate.”

The officer that Milstein spoke with the day of the car show said that there was probably a “hooligan” that took the signs and barricades away. Unfortunately, Milstein and 13 others still had to suffer.

In hindsight, parking services believe they could have done more to alert students that they needed to move their vehicles to accommodate the car show.

“Accordingly, we have commenced contacting the 14 affected students to inform them that their towing fees will be refunded in full, and any tickets they received will be waived,” stated Dr. Timothy Carey, Associate Vice President of Facilities Services. “We are only interested in treating our customers fairly, and we believe that the action we are taking demonstrates this commitment.”

Every day is a great day to wear a sweater or sweatshirt. They have a laid back style, perfect for campus. Stripes are a great way to add style without having to think. There are so many colors, directions and widths to choose from — but how do you make the right choice for you?

First off, as I will always advise, always stay true to your own personal style. If it doesn’t fit you, then most likely you won’t feel comfortable wearing it.

Let’s tackle color options first. To be honest, it’s really up to you. Personally, I’m obsessed with stripes. I tend to lean towards black and charcoal stripes, as well as not so ordinary pairing of colors, such as neon orange and green. I love unexpected colors when it comes to stripes.

However, the color of your stripes is not as vital as choosing the style. For me, there are only two directions stripes can go that are acceptable: vertical and horizontal.

Horizontal stripes are dependent on their width to create a functioning outfit. I believe thick horizontal stripes work better and can be worn by any body type. The top can be loose or more tightly fitted, and still look great.

Vertical stripes are trickier. A lose fitting top with vertical stripes can add bulk. However, a more tightly fitted top can create the illusion of making you appear taller.

This style is effortless, so try to experiment. For example, a polka dotted blouse with a striped cardigan, or a striped shirt with a floral scarf, is a great way to add to this simple trend. Either way, keep trending.

A Professor’s Quest to Save Breasts

With every organization, from the NFL to your local bakery, doing something to support Breast Cancer Awareness month, it’s easy to get caught up in all the large-scale hype.

On a smaller scale, there’s plenty of awareness being raised right here on campus through events at Homecoming and various smaller efforts.

Professor Fernando Uribe, part of the Department of Political Science and Law at MSU, will continue his charity towards this cause again this year in a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

Since 2008, Uribe has hosted his annual “A Professor’s Quest to Save the Breasts” fundraiser, a non-conventional but highly successful effort at raising money and awareness for a worthy cause.

Each year, the fundraiser is held at a different venue, making for a new atmosphere and fun every time. In the past, the event has been held at Wicked Willy’s and Social in Manhattan and Bahama Mama’s and Liberty Lounge and Grill in Hoboken. “I make it a point to host the event at a venue accessible to mass transit, so guests don’t have to worry about driving after this fundraiser,” said Uribe.

Uribe has raised $10,000 to date for the American Cancer Society and Making Strides against Breast Cancer. His successes have landed him the title of Pacemaker in 2010 and 2011, and an invitation to the American Cancer Society kick-off breakfast to speak on behalf of the fundraiser.

Uribe shoots for the same successes this year.

This year, Uribe’s fundraiser will be held at Tonic in Times Square on Saturday, Oct. 20. The theme behind this year’s fundraiser is a date auction. “It’s been fun, harmless and entertaining to watch me host the auction live.” The auction will start at approximately 11:30 p.m. and all proceeds will go towards towards breast cancer research.

“Despite the critics, my form of philanthropy is fun and more importantly, it raises considerably more money than more conventional means,” Uribe said.

When I began to have the courage to speak up about the abusive marriage I was in, I was often asked by others, “Why don’t you just leave?” The truth is, I did, on three separate occasions, before I finally left for good.

There are a myriad of reasons why the abused stay in abusive relationships. The list on domesticviolenceroundtable.org/abuse-victims-stay.html outlines the motives for staying rather than leaving. For me, it was the attachment I had to this man who was also my children’s father. I came from a divorced home and did not want my son to grow up without his father. I also believed that he would change. After all his mother told me “Just turn the other cheek” when he would do something I felt was abusive.

As time went by, I thought if I did leave, where would I go? I had talked to my mother several times about my situation. She was unsupportive and unwilling to take my son and I in. Over and over again, she said, “You made your bed, now lie in it.” If I did not have my mother to turn to, where else were we going to go? It was not like I had a well-paying job that would have afforded me to find an apartment on my own. At the time, there were also few to no shelters available for people in my situation. I was a mother of a child with disabilities. With those odds against me, there was no way we would be allowed entry. Last but not least, I risked losing my surviving child to the state if there was any hint of domestic violence. Child protective services are mandated to remove children. Eventually, I just accepted that it was better to stay then fight what was bigger then me, but it did not stop me from trying.

We had just gotten a computer with Internet capabilities. The research skills I acquired as a reporter during high school came in handy. I began to search for help outside of my state. I hit upon a shelter run by the Sisters of Mercy for women and children. After speaking with the director of the program, I made plans to leave my job and within days I did just that.

My son and I stayed there for about a month with the hope I would find a job and an apartment. Unfortunately, finding a job was difficult as I needed a car (I do not drive) to get to most places out of the area and I did not have childcare.

Through the shelter staff, I was able to get a subsidized apartment that required some type of income. I had no choice but to apply for public assistance. When abuser found out I did this, I received a phone call from him pleading with me. “If you take me to court for child support, I will kill myself. Come back home now!” I believed him as he had an uncle who actually committed suicide some years before we were together. I waited a few days before I repacked our bags and boarded the bus back home.

Though he promised, things at home did not change as he had promised they would. Instead of finding a job, he suggested that we live on public assistance to support ourselves until one of us found employment. Somehow, he convinced me that I was better suited to find work when he said, “You’re the smarter one. The one with more experience.”

Once again, I believed him, and it was true. For years I was the one supporting us before I left. As for being the “smarter one,” I’ll let you decide.

I put up with this so-called “life” that was only getting worse as time went by. He was the decision-maker on everything in the house, from the time I woke up in the morning, to what was for dinner, or what clothes I could wear, to the bank account where my paychecks were deposited to, whether or not my son would receive therapy for his disabilities. The list goes on and on. I was becoming more and more miserable. My son was not faring any better.

Once again, I began to look for outside help. I found an agency that served victims of domestic violence. The Violence Against Women Act of 1994 (VAWA) passed which made it a little easier to find services. Though I did not let on, he decided to leave too, but did not go very far. His mother lived in the building right across from us. This was his way of isolating me because he had convinced her and his sister to move to the area a few years back. He never gave me his keys to our apartment, which under the law was still his residence. He came and went while I was at work moving out his belongings. However the fact that he lived so close allowed him and his family to literally spy on my movements.

I felt worse. One night he came by to talk about us getting a divorce. I did not entertain the conversation any further after he asked me to pay for it. After all, he did not have a job to pay for an attorney. I figured if he really wanted one, he would seek one and pay for it himself. Before he left, he made a threat.:“If you don’t [give me a divorce], I will do something to hurt your heart.”

This statement alone was enough for me to secure an order of protection against him. It may have not been so easy to prove before, but given my pleas and probable desperation in my eyes and words, the judge sided in my favor. However, in New York, restraining orders from either criminal or family court are not usually permanent. This meant going back and forth to court every two months to renew it.

After a few months, he managed to convince me yet again he was a changed man. He began coming over for dinner regularly, spending a little time with his son and then expected us to be intimate. I did not reject these advances as I missed him. I missed us. He was taking advantage of me, but I did not really see it as that right away. I began asking him for my needs to be filled: come back home, get a job, be there for our son, move away, let’s have another child.

As time went by, I started having suspicions he was not being faithful, which made me stop engaging in sexual acts with him. It did not stop him from trying. The final straw was the morning he came by under the guise of taking his son out for the day. He appeared to be belligerent or drunk. While my son was taking a bath and as I was getting some of his clothes ready, he raped me. He wanted me to “prove I wasn’t sleeping with that (expletive). You’re mine,” he yelled. As he had his hands around my neck, looking straight into my eyes he said, “I should have squeezed harder.”

As soon as he left, I called the police. They came by and took a report. With this report, I went to court the next day and was able to get criminal and family court orders of protection keeping him away. It worked and he followed the orders. I also begged my mother to come home. Within three days, my son and I were safe and out of harm’s way.

hat’s on your Facebook?” That’s the question on many admission offices’ minds. We all view Facebook as a digital oasis, where we scrapbook many precious memories, memories that are broadcasted for the world to see. We have statuses about literally everything we do.

It’s only natural that college admission offices would like to get to know more about their students, but Facebook being a deciding factor in picking their students is a bit of a stretch. It’s hard to argue with the typical “They have no right to be on my Facebook.”

Well, Facebook is public domain that allows millions of people to look at your Facebook.

What’s to stop admissions from doing the same?

Admission offices could look at your Facebook, but to go as far as making your profile a determining factor to be accepted to a university is absurd. Facebook is a place where we like to make jokes and chat with friends. Many of the pictures and statuses on Facebook can be taken way out of context and is not appropriate for admissions to see.

College is a place where students learn about professionalism and become serious students. To punish them for pictures plagued with past mistakes is ridiculous.

Facebook is a form of expression for teenagers. It’s a haven from our adult monitored world. Most parents aren’t tech-savvy enough

to stalk their child’s account, so why should we feel constricted by tyranny?

High school was in the past and we all know from personal experiences, college is much different.

Those who have struggled in the past with making the right choices will have an opportunity to strive throughout their college experience. The opposite can be said about those who strived in high school. They can underestimate the college work load.

We understand that admissions are curious about the students they admit into their school, but isn’t that what our college essays are for? They are the expression of true character. A university should admire the merit and words portrayed in a college essay. Facebook

is not a reliable source to learn more about students. When you reflect on what you wrote in your college essays, it was honesty.

There are secrets in college essays that someone would never admit to on Facebook. That is the true depiction of a student’s personality, not trivial websites.

It shouldn’t be the university’s concern as to what is on our Facebook accounts. What we post on there is for fun. Sometimes we may make mistakes and post something that was never meant for the internet to ogle at, but we have to learn from our mistakes.

College isn’t just about finding great students, but also students finding greatness within themselves. When students begin to take responsibility for themselves,

then they will realize what is appropriate to post online. It’s understandable for the employers to look into an applicant’s Facebook. They have a right to know who they are hiring, but only until an applicant has matured through their college experiences. In the words of Evander Holyfield, “It’s not the size of the man, but the size of his heart that matters.” Allow me to rephrase that, “It is not the Facebook of a man that matters, but the size of his heart.”

Heart and passion are the determining factors of a potential college student, not a Facebook picture of a kid holding a red Solo cup.

Drivers Seek Permission to Park Freely The positive changes promised to parking accommodations fail to deliver

S

oon after the end of last semester, Dr. Timothy Carey sent out an email to all students assuring us that Dylan Soltis “Positive columnist Changes Are Coming!” to student parking in the 20122013 academic year. Unfortunately, like many “positive changes” at Montclair State, this was only partially true.

While any reduction in the absurd cost of parking permits is graciously welcomed (even a modest reduction of $25), some of the other changes to student parking have been counterproductive.

Specifically, the new policy allowing residents with a standard resident parking permit to park in any residential lot is both unnecessary and dubious in nature. Instead of making

parking easier for residents, this policy has increased the difficulty of finding a spot in some locations.

Personally, I have found that it is almost impossible (without extraordinary luck) to find an open spot to park in any of the residential lots around the Clove Road Apartments except on Friday nights and Saturdays when everyone has presumably fled campus for the weekend.

Any logical system of parking permits would have separate permits for each residential lot so as not to overcrowd certain areas by selling too many passes to residents at those locations.

For instance, in a system where parking permits are restricted to certain locations, if there are 390 residents of the Clove Road Apartments but only 200 spots (a generous estimation), once those permits are sold out, that area’s capacity is filled and everyone has a spot in the vicinity of their residence.

However, in an unrestricted permit system like the one currently in place, there is the chance that more than 200 residents of Clove can purchase stan-

dard resident parking permits, leaving the unlucky students without spots come Sunday night when the residents are migrating back to campus for Monday morning classes. This is what I suspect has occurred this semester.

My theory is that this “positive change” is not really a positive for the students, but more likely, for Parking Services. By putting this policy into practice, they are broadening the base of students likely to purchase parking permits since the upperclassmen residents of Clove and the Village are more likely to have cars than the largely underclassmen residents of the Heights, even though the Clove and Village complexes most likely have fewer parking spaces in their vicinity than they have student demand for permits.

In this way, parking services can sell more parking permits even though residents may have a harder time making use of said permit.

This goes without noting, however, the amount of revenue this policy stands to generate in parking violations attributed to students who— when they cannot find parking in

residential lots—are forced to park in other nearby lots for which they do not have permits.

Admittedly, this is just a theory, but it certainly seems like a logical explanation to me. If this is the case, I certainly hope that Parking Services has the rationality and compassion to devise a more logical resident parking permit system so that my fellow residents and I can stop driving around in circles looking for an open parking space on Sunday night, eventually settling to take our chances in a nearby commuter lot or being forced to buy a permit for the NJ Transit Deck to supplement our essentially useless MSU permit.

While I would like to note that I think the other changes to MSU parking policy (Zipcar, weekend day passes, etc.) are truly positive, this standard residential parking permit system simply does not work and is exploitative of the students who purchase them.

Romney’s“Clean” Coal the Future Face of America The dark, dirty reality of Appalachian coal mining

he drive through West Virginia is breathtaking: beautiful, Kristen bryfogle towering Asst. Opinion Editor mountains thick with green, and rivers zigzagging with rapids. However, beyond the view of the major highways are mountains devoid of all majesty.

They’ve had their tops blown off by coal mining companies who want to get to their product as quickly as possible. They load up the mountain’s peaks with dynamite and blast off the top, gathering the coal inside before moving on to the next profit.

This is a system of mining called Mountaintop Removal Mining, or MTR, and it has been utilized by the United States since the 1970s in the Appalachian Mountains. This is just one of the prices paid for efficient mining, an industry recently bolstered by the support of presidential candi-

date Mitt Romney.

He claims that “clean coal” could perhaps remove the United States’ dependency on other countries for sources of energy, although the hidden issues with American coal mining are anything but clean.

For two summers in a row, I have spent a week in West Virginia with my church youth group to repair and rebuild homes for people living in one of the most impoverished states in the country. The state thrives on the coal mining industry, which is a dangerous occupation to say the least.

In talking to some residents of West Virginia over the years, I’ve been able to understand just part of what being a coal miner entails.

With recent media attention to trapped miners throughout the world, it comes as no surprise that coal mining is an incredibly dangerous job, not only while actually performing in the mines, but also due to the health concerns caused later in life from the actual process of mining.

For those in West Virginia who have grown up in or around poverty, coal mining offers an opportunity to escape financial insecurity. It offers a means to put food on the table, to buy

a stable house and to possibly move up the corporate ladder and live a relatively happy and successful life.

However, the United States Department of Labor released a study showing that in 2007, 33 miners lost their lives in fatalities related to work. The study shows similar numbers in recent years and thousands of work-related injuries. Is this the price workers have to pay in order to feel financially secure?

Maybe not, but citizens of West Virginia have shared wary stories of the alternative occupation for many who opt out of risking their lives: drug trafficking.

A study published by the Executive Branch reveals that West Virginia is in the top ten for drug-use in adults from 18 to 25, and that its death rate caused by drug use in the state is over the national percentage. Drugs are used by many citizens of West Virginia, including coal miners, to escape their worries—about money, family, and whether they will survive to see the next day.

Even citizens who are not part of the coal mining industry, or the drug trafficking scene, are at risk. Environmental effects of coal mining have

been known to cause higher mortality rates for those living in the coal mining districts of Appalachia. Not only that, but several have placed roadside crosses on highways where loved ones were killed by coal truck drivers, notorious for reckless driving. Coal truck drivers get paid in relation to the shortness of their deliveries, and many innocent lives have been put at risk by coal trucks pummeling over cars for the sake of a higher paycheck.

Additionally, educators within the state often do not encourage students to pursue higher education, because coal mining is such a highly valued industry within the state.

West Virginia does not have issues simply because it is an immensely impoverished state. Coal is the source of many serious issues and injustices for the people of West Virginia. Though politicians may change the future of this country, it’s a heinous crime to promote the industry of coal blindly, without understanding the role coal mining plays in the unhappiness of many citizens of our country.

The Process of Soul Searching And Loving What You Find Taking the time to focus on yourself rather then others

T

hroughout our lives, we constantly form new relationships: relatives, coworkers, Sherry Jeong friends, reliColumnist gious patrons and our peers. We seek approval, as it is human nature to do so. We want to be accepted for who we are and everything that we stand for.

I believe it is safe to say that all of us have struggled with chasing after the wrong sort of people to like and accept us. Fitting into a group at school or at work brings about a sense of comfort, a familiarity that comes with being welcomed.

I feel as though many of us even mold ourselves to be fit in and be accepted. It is only a natural want and need; to be a part of something, to understand your role and where you belong.

Although groups can be fun and definitely gratifying, I consider the most important relationship to be with you as an individual. Without believing in yourself and your own potential, no one can possibly succeed

in anything.

The struggles that come about throughout life are tough. Some people seem to roll with the punches while others appear to be blindfolded, taking hits hard with their hands behind their back.

Personally, I would like to say I can be both. Not too long ago, my teenage years were a cause for numerous amounts of conflicts on my part.

I went in and out of different social groups for years with no sense of real individualism.

Recently, I have come to the conclusion that recognizing who you are and your own self worth are two very crucial steps to success and ultimate happiness, no matter the situation or where you are in life, these are the only two things you need to have.

Without believing in yourself, as an individual, you are mentally crippled. You stop seeing the possibilities and are constantly unsure of the plans and goals that are made.

Self-actualization is key when it comes to living out your dreams and becoming the person you truly are meant to be.

As someone who has struggled with this throughout adolescence, I can speak from experience. Without

really loving yourself first, you lose what is real and beautiful about yourself as a living soul.

Not seeing the self-value and potential restricts us from growing and really living our lives. In the absence of this, we seek approval elsewhere from other people. When we do this, we let people have complete control over our emotions and you, no doubt, change into the person they want you to be.

You allow them to tell you what you want and who you are for fear of being alone and not being accepted.

Standing up for yourself can only be done by you.

I believe everyone has the potential to do what they set their mind to. The first step in accomplishing any goal is acceptance and self-love because without these things, we are empty shells.

We do not grow and see the possibilities that each and every life has to offer. The world passes by and we constantly wonder how to please other people instead of focusing on our own individual happiness and self-love. Big, small, ugly, pretty, we are all beautiful human beings in our own way. What makes us beautiful is staying true to ourselves and letting the inner beauty shine through. You

will miss so many experiences when you leave yourself behind.

Everyone has questioned their own self-value at some point. Whether we made a big mistake or because we feel unsure about ourselves when it comes to big accomplishments, we all have to remember that no one is perfect.

Though some people may appear to be on the outside, every single person is struggling to be who they are and what they think they should be.

We all need and want to fit in and be accepted by our companions. Everybody makes mistakes, and hey, life would be really boring in the absence of them.

Complications, and the messes we seem to bring about as human beings, are what make us real and beautiful.

Nothing is more valuable than selfworth and staying true to ourselves through the good and the bad.

Be proud of who you are and everything you have to offer, because not another single person in this world can be you. Everyone is special and beautiful in their own way.

A Lack Of Policy Is The Best Policy?

The presidential debate spins out of control

A

fter watching, listening and subsequently re-listening to the presidential debate held at the UniLevon Syers versity columnist of Denver, I was more or less stupefied by the lack of detail put forth by either candidate in addressing America’s domestic policies, namely education, military defense, healthcare and deficit reduction.

Not one original plan of action for domestic policy was proposed and explained thoroughly, and both candidates failed to bring up deep seeded issues, such as the current U.S. prison system.

The moderator Jim Lehrer— who has done a decent job in past debates—failed to notice this. Lehrer was constantly put on hold by both candidates to further elaborate on their own ambiguous views, including anecdotes regarding the American “middle class,” a demographic neither can relate to at this point.

What viewers were left with was an hour and a half of regurgitated, equivocal speeches given by both candidates about their own “new” views on convenient domestic policies, while domestic policies that actually affect the American people were ignored all together.

It is amazing to hear people denigrate current issues regarding healthcare policies and the unemployment rate one week, only to be up in arms with one another the next week defending those same pernicious policies because of some misplaced devotion they have to a political party and figurehead, both of which they do not fully understand. I’ll be the first to admit that I do not understand all of the details involving politics, but at least I do recognize the day-to-day ironies that politics invoke.

Most American people have neither the time nor patience to locate, read and understand the political world that surrounds them. This is not their fault; the government, turning what is meant to be news into propaganda, easily influences our media coverage outlets. I’m convinced that if Americans did have the time to deconstruct what was happening outside of their homes, they would come to the conclusion that while some domestic policies featured in the debate show slight differences in opinion between the two sides, the more important and ignored domestic policies not discussed in the first debate are essentially supporting the same exact plans of action.

This point was emphasized in an

article by Glenn Greenwald entitled, “The US Presidential Debates’ Illusion of Political Choice.” In it, Greenwald says, “A long list of highly debatable and profoundly significant policies will be similarly excluded due to bipartisan agreement.

The list includes a rapidly growing domestic surveillance state that now monitors and records even the most innocuous activities of all Americans, job-killing free trade agreements, climate change policies, and the Obama justice department’s refusal to prosecute the Wall Street criminals who precipitated the 2008 financial crisis.”

Regarding our current educational system, President Obama and Romney both agreed that it is imperative that we improve it. President Obama frequently referred to “Race to the Top,” which is basically a continuation of the “No Child Left Behind” program established during the Bush administration. The program, more or less running since the start of the Obama administration, gives out aid in the form of grants, which schools apply for nationally.

The program is also supposed to be a way of ensuring “better” performance out of teachers and administrative staff. It is an attempt to establish nationalized standards of education.

Though it might sound altruistic to someone who heard this information during the debate for the first time, for many younger teachers the mentioning of this program only reminds them of the trials that they’ve been forced to face during the past four years. In a 2009 article entitled, “Educator: ‘Race to the Top’s’ 10 False Assumptions,” Valerie Strauss features a series of arguments written by Marion Brady that focuses on the fallacies this program is based on. “‘Race to the Top?’ National standards for math, science, and other school subjects? The high-powered push to put them in place makes it clear that the politicians, business leaders, and wealthy philanthropists who’ve run America’s education show for the last two decades are as clueless about educating as they’ve always been. If they weren’t, they’d know that adopting national standards will be counterproductive, and that the ‘Race to the Top’ will fail for the same reason ‘No Child Left Behind’ failed— because it’s based on false assumptions.”

What false assumptions? It is the implied notion that teachers are responsible for the educational system’s sub-par performances, as also noted by Marion Brady. As a result, teachers face unwarranted scrutiny from all sides -often times resulting in termination- for following the plans which were approved by the Department of Education in the first place.

Public schools and universities now treat teachers as highly expendable

commodities, “leasing” them for a few years, only to terminate their employment when their time for tenure has arrived.

President Obama stated he wanted to lower educational costs for students nationwide. Yes, he might “want” to lower the costs, but if any students and parents have been paying attention to their tuition costs over the past four years, they would have noticed the steady increase.

In an article written by Stacy Proebstle this past August entitled, “Tuition Increases for NJ’s Public Colleges in 2012,” she notes, “On average, it will cost $12,000 in tuition and fees to attend a state public college this fall, or about $400 more than last year.” She also claims that this was a 3 percent increase in tuition costs since 2011.

Regarding Romney, it is absolutely astounding that anyone still takes him seriously. During the tax section of the debate, Romney made it quite clear to denounce Obama’s claim that he was not going to cut taxes by $5 trillion. As a matter of fact, he made it quite clear as to what he was not going to do, and that was more or less his whole argument. In “What Mitt Romney Really Believes,” Peter Suderman elaborated on Romney’s elementary approach.

“Yet while Romney’s answers were chock-full-o-facts, they remained light on the sort of policy specifics that his campaign has consistently refused to provide. Talking taxes at the beginning of the night, for example, Romney stuck mostly to what he wouldn’t do. ‘I don’t have a $5 trillion tax cut,’ he said in response to an accusation by the president. ‘I don’t have a tax cut of a scale that you’re talking about... I’m not going to reduce the share of taxes paid by high-income people.’ But then, rather than offer a clear framework for tax reform, Romney pivoted to an attack on the president’s record.

“Under the president’s policies,” he said, “middle-income Americans have been buried. They’re just being crushed.”

Mitt Romney cares about middleclass Americans. As a matter of fact, Mitt Romney cares so much about middle-income Americans that he made this following statement in a leaked video at a $50,000-a-plate fundraising dinner in Florida: “... These are people who pay no income tax...[M]y job is not to worry about those people.

I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.” “These people,” according to Mitt Romney, constitute 47 percent of the Americans, when in reality it is only 8 percent of people that do not pay income tax in America.

Furthermore, Teresa Ghilarducci and Rick McGahey in a CNN special opinion report, “Americans Are Not Moochers,” made this observation in response to Romney’s quote. “What is missing from all this talk about tax

is the fact that although the rich pay higher taxes than the poor, middleclass people actually pay a higher percentage of their income in total taxes.”

The point is one way or another, every American is going to annually be taxed by the government. We will see little to no difference in the way we are taxed in the next four years, yet a significant amount of time is wasted on this topic in the debate because it is one of the acceptable issues to broadcast nationwide.

There is an interesting realization one comes to when considering the demographic both candidates constantly try to appeal to.

My friend made this observation the other day, which I thought was pretty relevant to my own experiences when talking with friends and family about the debate: “There are statistics that show the overwhelming majority of people, like 90 percent, view themselves as members of the middle class, so when politicians say they want to help the middle class, they’re playing the numbers game because they’re trying to appeal to the broadest base possible. They both have said that the rich are doing fine and don’t need ‘help.’

They both know that the poor don’t pay taxes because of the low rates and tax credits and loopholes. They have Medicaid and other social programs to help them.”

This debate was interesting in the same way I found reading “The Encomium of Helen” by Gorgias interesting. There were absolutely no true or concrete details given about a plan of action on either side, but detailed thought went into rhetorical technique which included throwing out idealistic statements about helping the “middle class” people.

This was coupled with criticisms made by both on each other’s policies, which, if anyone wants to go through the trouble of finding and reading them, are for the most part the same.

Where U.S. domestic policies would only slightly differ between the parties, it will be interesting to see what both candidates say during the foreign policy debate: an area in which both parties are in full accordance with each other.

If it takes a person weeks of reading only to vaguely grasp what is happening in the political arena regarding domestic policy, there is a blatant indication of misguidance on the media’s end. I care about America and my freedoms, which is why I think the American citizens, you and I, deserve better than what is being currently offered by our government.

A look at Swedish DJ and EDM innovator Avicii Jessica Weinberg Staff Writer

Tim Berling, a Swedish Electronic DJ and producer better known as Avicii, has become extremely popular after the release of “Levels” (also spelled as Le7els) last year. The song samples the vocals of Etta James’ 1962 gospel ballad, “Something’s Got a Hold on Me.” The iconic DJ received great feedback and gained millions of fans around the globe after “Levels” became one of the top summer anthems in rotation. The song is played at music festivals and clubs all around the world.

Avicii has transformed from Swedish DJ to a house music god, and was the first House DJ to perform at Radio City Music Hall. He is now being looked upon as a breakout star. “My Feelings For You” is another single that became a hit.

It was first produced in 1999 by a French Electronic music band named Cassius. In December of 2010 it was released and remade by Avicii and Sebastien Drums.

Avicii has become an icon within the fashion industry after Ralph Lauren sponsored him. Currently, he is performing around the United States. 2012 looks like an amazing year for Avicii!

Since Frank Ocean’s “coming out,” the state of homosexuality in music has been the topic of discussion in and out of the press.

With music legends constantly being asked to share their thoughts on the perceived issue, there is a pack of openly gay artists making their own moves in music without a pass from the mainstream.

At the forefront of this pack is Le1f, a fast-rapping water nymph from New York City. Le1f received loads of press after releasing the video for this single “Wut” from his Dark York mixtape a few months ago.

The video soon became infamous when the urban media outlet Worldstarhiphop shared it with the headline, “This Is What Happens When Rappers Start Admitting They’re Gay?”

School Daze is a 1988 Spike Lee classic and musical-drama that deals with the college experience inspired

by Lee’s enrollment in historically black institutions.

The film follows the lives of active members of the student body during the exciting and eventful homecoming weekend at Mission College. The film also dabbles in the many ups and downs that college students go through: pledging, relationships, friendships and fun are all strong topics depicted with 1980s flair thanks to Lee’s signature style, a style that make him a cinematic heavyweight.

Vaughn “Dap” Dunlap (Laurence Fishburne) is a conscious AfricanAmerican student who is the films protagonist. Throughout the film, we watch his deep-rooted power struggle with Julian Eaves (Giancarlo Esposito) also known as Dean Big Brother Almighty of Gamma Phi Gamma Fraternity, Incorporated.

Their feud is played out through Dunlap’s cousin, Half Pint, (Spike Lee) who is pledging Gamma Phi Gamma.

Written and directed by Lee,

School Daze is his second full-length feature that touches on issues within the African American community that are still prominent today.

The most moving is Lee’s portrayal of colorism, which is the driving force behind the feud with Dunlap and Eaves. There is the topic of what exactly is “good hair” that is fought out between the fraternities’ sweethearts. The Gamma Rays, are a pack of fair-skinned beauties who wear contacts and hair extensions while the other female crew, are pro-black students who have chosen to reject the influence of white America on their identity as AfricanAmericans. The film is definitely a powerful perspective on college that we rarely see in films.

Volleyball Continues to Dominate Rich Efrus Staff Writer

It was a busy week for the Montclair State University Women’s Volleyball team. The Red Hawks are now 20-8 on the season and 3-3 in the NJAC. Highlights of the week were when Kaitlyn Irwin named the NJAC Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week and when the team picked up its 20th win of the season.

In the first match of the week, the Red Hawks were up against the tough Baruch College squad that came into the match with a 14-6 overall record. Baruch College came out with a purpose and were determined to leave Montclair with the win.

Baruch won the match in three straight sets at the Panzer Athletic Center last Tuesday evening. Marta Topor was a standout for the Red Hawks, registering 10 kills and nine digs. Alyssa Batiste, Nicole Wojtowicz and Sara Girgus all had five kills each in the match for the Red Hawks. Angela Campo finished with 23 assists and Irwin recorded a team-high 23 digs.

To pick up their 18th win of the season, the Red Hawks played a good team match at home to sweep the William Paterson University Pioneers. Prior to the match, members of the Montclair State Volleyball NJAC Championships teams from 1997 and 2007 were honored on the court.

Campo registered 36 assists and Dana Mcnish had 10 kills. Batiste and Topor also got involved in the win by contributing eight kills each while Daniella Salemo had six kills and two aces.

Over the weekend, the Red Hawks participated in the Tom Hay Invitational at Blake Arena in Springfield, Massachusetts. They lost in straight sets to the host, Springfield College 25-13, 25-13 and 25-12. Topor had six kills and five digs in the loss.

The Red Hawks seemed to struggle the whole match with just a .021 hitting percentage. Salemo added

four kills and Irwin shined defensively, leading the team with 15 digs and Campo added 13 assists.

In the final matches of the Invitational, the Red Hawks won one and lost one. In the first match, MSU took on Colby-Sawyer College in a match that lasted five sets. The Red Hawks came up short, despite a good team effort, and lost the match 3-2. Salemo, Topor and Batiste had 13 kills, 12 kills and 10 kills respectively and Salemo added 20 digs along with Irwin’s 24.

Kimberly Butrico and Elise Brackett also combined for 28

digs while Campo registered 42 assists in the five set match.

In the second game, the Red Hawks picked up their 19th win of the season in a match where they swept Westfield State College in straight sets 25-20, 25-12 and 25-18.

Westfield State struggled and the Red Hawks took full advantage.

Topor led the team in kills with 12 and Campo led the team in assists with 29. Irwin posted 12 digs and Brackett registered nine. After the Invitational, the Red Hawks improved their overall record to 19-8.

Field Hockey Remains Unstoppable Mike Panepinto Staff Writer

The MSU Women’s Field Hockey team has looked nothing short of amazing through roughly the first two months of the season. The Lady Red Hawks have been able to pull out wins in close games and dominate their opponents in blowouts.

This week was no different for MSU as they held on for a win against an independent opponent, and easily took care of business against the defending Division III Women’s Field Hockey National Champion.

The Montclair State Women’s Field Hockey team is currently ranked tenth in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll, and the new rankings are slated to come out today after press time of this article.

This past Wednesday, Oct. 3rd, the Lady Red Hawks made the short commute to Hoboken to match up against the Lady Ducks from Stevens Institute of Technology.

MSU registered the first action on the scoreboard when junior midfielder Jennifer Tafro took an assist from junior forward/midfielder Brooke Hullings and buried a shot in the lower left corner of the goal at the 21:45 mark to give the Lady Red Hawks an early 1-0 lead.

The score would remain 1-0 until halftime, but in the second half, the action really picked up. The game was not even a full minute into the new half when senior midfielder/forward Frances Schaefer was able to sneak in a goal from the top of the circle to give MSU a 2-0 lead.

Then about 15 minutes later at the 51:55 point of the game, junior midfielder Allison Jillions connected her shot into the back of the cage to put the Lady Red Hawks up 3-0. The assists for both the second and the third goals came from Jennifer Tafro.

There were still 20 minutes left, and the Lady Ducks were not going to go away quietly.

Kate Norgard is currently second on the team in both goals and assists with nine and seven respectively. Norgard is also tied for the team lead with 25 points. hands and scored the Lady Ducks’ first goal off a rebound at the 60:15 mark to make it a 3-1 game. Only four minutes later, Fiebel came right back down the field and deftly avoided a group of MSU defenders as her shot deflected into the top corner of the cage to make it a 3-2 game.

The Lady Ducks’ last chance to tie the game was thwarted on a saved penalty corner, as the Lady Red Hawks pulled out the 3-2 victory. Senior goalkeeper Megan Bosland collected her 56th career victory and moved into first place in all-time wins, passing Trisha Winkle’s total of 55 victories from 2000-2003.

On Saturday, Oct. 6th, Montclair State faced arguably their toughest opponent of the season when they made the trip down to Ewing, NJ to take on the undefeated TCNJ Lady Lions, who are also the defending Division III Women’s Field Hockey Champions.

and solidified their presence in the conference and all of Division III Field Hockey with an impressive 5-1 win over TCNJ. For most of the first half, the game was scoreless, until one minute left in the half, when Jennifer Tafro gave Frances Schaefer a great pass, and Schaefer did the rest scoring the goal, and giving MSU a 1-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Lady Red Hawks amped up the pressure on the Lady Lions, which led to more goals for MSU. Three minutes into the second half, Schaefer notched her second goal, this time off of a pass from freshman forward Maura Johnston.

Johnston would pick up her second assist on the third goal at the 43:09 mark, this time connecting with senior forward Kate Norgard, and Norgard found the back of the cage to put the Lady Red Hawks up 3-0.

Three minutes later, Norgard scored her second goal of the day to give MSU a 4-0 lead. TCNJ be-

lieved they had some life and a rally on hand when sophomore midfielder Erin Waller scored at the 58:18 mark. That hope was dashed just eight minutes later when Schaefer knocked in her third goal of the day, giving her a hat-trick and giving the Lady Red Hawks the 5-1 win over the Lady Lions. The assist for the final goal came from Kate Norgard.

MSU only plays one game this week, but they finally return home after a successful 3-0 road trip. The game is Wednesday, Oct. 10th against the FDU-Florham Devils. Senior forward Frances Schaefer and sophomore defender Abby Erier received NJAC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week Honors respectively.

Both athletes have played a key role on this team during the Lady Red Hawks ten game-winning streak.

Montclair State’s overall record is 12-1, while their NJAC record is 4-0, which is good enough for sole possession of first place in the conference.

Red Hawks Fall to .500 in NJAC Play Nick Patriarca Assistant Sports Editor

The Montclair Red Hawks football team suffered a heavy defeat last Saturday at home to the visiting Rowan Professors by a score of 33-7.

This marks their first loss to the now 22nd ranked Profs since 2005, and their most lopsided defeat since their NCAA playoff loss to Wesley in 2010.

The Profs were fueled by an offensive eruption in the 2nd quarter in which they scored 27 unanswered points.

Rowan drew first blood in the opening quarter with a 38-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Louie Bianchini to sophomore wideout Ed Eisenhart on just their second offensive drive.

The Red Hawks responded later on in the quarter with a four play, 44 yard drive capped off by a 10-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Drew Cathey to senior wide receiver Vin Fischer. The quarter ended with the Red Hawks leading 7-6.

The Rowan offense exploded in the second quarter, scoring on three out of four offensive possessions.

Senior running back Keith Corcoran scored the go-ahead touchdown on a one-yard run just over a minute into the second quarter.

The Profs extended their lead on the following drive when Bianchini connected with senior wide receiver Anthony Barone for a 27-yard touchdown. The Red Hawk offense went three-and-out on the following drive, and a 21-yard punt return by senior wide receiver Dan Reed took the Profs down to the Red Hawks’ 15 yard line.

Rowan would continue to pour it on offensively, adding one more score before the half.

A 54-yard pass from Bianchini to freshman running back Withler Marcelin brought the Profs to the Red Hawks one-yard line. A penalty pushed them back to the seven, but it made no difference as Bianchini hit Corcoran for his fourth touchdown pass as time expired to make the score, 33-7, at the half.

Despite entering the red zone on two occasions in the second half, the Red Hawk offense wasn’t able to put anything on the scoreboard, as the Profs held on for a dominating 33-7 victory. The Red Hawks were held to just 223 yards of total offense and were forced to go threeand-out five times in the struggle.

Rowan quarterback Bianchini lit up the stat sheet, completing 14 of 19 passes, throwing for 268 yards and four touchdowns. Junior running back Bill Roman, who was filling in for the injured A.J. Scoppa, rushed for

122 yards on 24 carries. Cathey went 15 for 31, throwing for 115 yards.

With the win, the now 22nd ranked Rowan Profs improve to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the NJAC. The Red Hawks fall to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the NJAC. The Red Hawks will be at home again on Saturday, Oct. 14 for the annual homecoming showdown against NJAC rival The College of New Jersey Lions. This will be the 80th meeting between these two teams in a historic New Jersey college football rivalry.

MLB Playoffs Underway Taylor Zuppa Staff Writer

With the MLB playoffs underway, and nearly every series split between teams, it has no doubt become an entertaining, if not nerve-wracking, post season so far. All of the series have required at least game four, and no team is going down without a solid fight.

After a 5-1 victory over the favored Texas Rangers in the American League Wild Card game, the Baltimore Orioles went on to face the AL East division winners, the New York Yankees.

The Yankees readily handled the Orioles in the first game of the series, winning 7-2. Yankees ace CC Sabathia pitched 8 2/3 innings, giving up eight hits and striking out seven. Catcher Russell Martin came through in the clutch, first ending the tie game in the ninth inning with a homerun, and then driving in another run with an RBI single into left field.

The Orioles powered through in the next game, with rookie pitcher Wei-Yin Chen keeping the Yankees to seven hits and besting veteran Andy Pettitte. Yankee star Alex Rodriguez gave another disappointing postseason performance, unable to come through when his team needed him and struck out to end the game, making that his fourth game-ending postseason strikeout, more than any player in history, according to ESPN. The split in the series is not all that surprising, considering they’ve split their 18 games in the regular season as well. The series will return to the Bronx, where the Orioles have won all three of the regular season series.

In the other series, the Oakland Athletics kept it interesting by preventing a sweep to the Detroit Tigers late Tuesday night, winning 2-0. Post-season rookie pitcher Brett Anderson led the defensive shut-out of the Tigers, allowing only two hits and striking out six.

game two of the series, bounced back Tuesday, robbing Tigers slugger Prince Fielder of a homerun in the second inning. A’s shortstop Stephen Drew and outfielder Yoenis Cespedes both contributed great defensive plays as well to keep the Tigers scoreless.

As if the postseason didn’t already have you on the edge of your seat, the San Francisco Giants also narrowly avoided a sweep to the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday night in a pitching duel that went into extra innings.

The Giants were barely able to get one hit within the past two games, but they capitalized on an error made

by Reds third baseman, Golden Glove winner Scott Rolen, getting one run in and ending the game 2-1 in the 10th.

Reds starter Homer Bailey allowed only one hit in his seven innings pitched and struck out 10. There were only five hits between the two teams, and despite 16 total strikeouts for the Giants, a lucky (or unlucky) bobble

gave them the opportunity for a win.

The young Washington Nationals and the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals are upholding the promise of an exciting postseason as well, with the series tied at 1-1.

The Nationals had the best record in their division, while the Cardinals snuck in on a messy wildcard victory over the Atlanta Braves.

The Nationals, who have only four players on their roster with postseason experience, proved that experience means little after their 3-2 victory in game one of the series.

Shortstop Ian Desmond went 3-4 with a run, tying the franchise postseason record for hits in a single game.

However, the victory goes to the Nationals pitching staff. Gio Gonzalez, who went 21-8 in the regular season, kept the Cardinals to just one hit in his five innings pitched.

Three Nationals bullpen pitchers, Ryan Mattheus, Tyler Clippard and

Drew Storen, then split the remaining four innings, giving the Cardinals only two hits and one more run.

If the Nationals can keep it together, their bullpen is going to be what saves them, especially after the shutdown of their ace Stephen Strasburg.

The Cardinals did not take the loss lightly, and fought back with a stunning 12-4 win in St. Louis. Outfielder Carlos Beltran hit two of the four St. Louis home runs, roughing up the Nationals pitching staff that did so well the day before.

Adding to those hits were infielders Daniel Descalso and Allen Craig, who each had a home run and accounted for seven of the Cardinals’ runs, respectively. The Nationals’ hotheaded teenage outfielder Bryce Harper struggled on offense, going 1 for 5, four of which were strikeouts, and was also picked off at third shortly after doubling to center field. He is 1-10 in the playoffs so far.

Frances Schaefer Midfielder/Forward — Field Hockey Schaefer was named NJAC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring a goal in the Red Hawks 3-2 win over Stevens. Jets, Shot Down

Doesn’t it feel like it was just yesterday when ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio interviewed New York Jets linebacker Bart Scott, right after the team went on to beat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in taking one step further into the playoffs?

Paolantonio ends the conversation by congratulating Scott and how he looks forward to seeing them play the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship. Scott emphatically responds with one of sports’ most famous lines by saying, “Can’t Wait.”

Well, unfortunately, Jets fans probably can’t wait until this season is over, thanks to the debacle they have to endure.

Although their record stands at 2-3, on paper, the roster has been depleted with major injuries. Cornerback Darrelle Revis, who’s one of the best corners in the league, went down with a torn ACL. It’s a player’s and fan’s worst nightmare when they hear or see a torn ACL. One week later, wide receiver Santonio Holmes suffered a season ending Lisfranc injury in his left foot. These two players are, hands down, the Jets’ top playmakers on both sides of the field.

Their solution in helping out the secondary was very questionable. They decided to move running back Joe McKnight to cornerback and he didn’t seem pleased when he heard the news. “I was drafted as a running back. The way I took

it is that I wasn’t good enough to play running back, that’s what I took it as. I don’t know if that’s the case or not,” said McKnight. McKnight certainly excelled on special teams this past Monday night against the Houston Texans by returning a kickoff for a 100-yard touchdown.

The reciever corps is now in dire need after the loss of Holmes. Before the season started, CB Antonio Cromartie spoke out on “ESPN First Take,” saying that, although not having played WR in the past five years, he still considers himself to be the second best WR on the team due to his raw talent.

What I think the Jets should do is either sign former WR Plaxico Burress, who was able to catch eight touchdowns last season, or pick up free agent Terrell Owens. Owens actually tweeted this week, “Hey JETS!!!

I’m available! I’m ready, willing & able! Call my agent & let’s make it happen.” Paging Mike Tannenbaum, you ought to sign “TO,” considering the offense is just short of mediocre.

How can we forget about the quarterback controversy? It was already off to a lousy start in training camp when QB Mark Sanchez was interviewed. One of the reporters asked him a question by calling him “Tim” (QB Tim Tebow). Sanchez seemed to have taken light of the mistake, by consulting, “I’m Mark” while laughing it off. Sanchez hasn’t played horribly this year, but he definitely hasn’t lived up to expectations like he did his first two seasons.

Another move the Jets made this offseason was hiring former Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano as their offensive coordinator.

One of the purposes of hiring Sparano was to specialize in the “Wildcat” formation. This was meant to incorporate Tim Tebow in making the offense unpredictable at any given time during the game. So far, this formation hasn’t been able to throw off any of the opposing teams’ game plans, while Tebow has a total of only 66 yards in the first five games.

The Jets’ focal point last season was when they went headto-head with their city rivals, the New York Giants, on Christmas Eve. Both teams went into the game with a record at 7-7. It was a highstakes game with the role of “New York’s team” on the line. Most importantly, this game was a makeor-break moment with both teams

in pursuit of a spot in the playoffs.

Despite this game happening last season, it doesn’t seem like the Jets have fully recovered from such a devastating loss. The team’s morale certainly took a big hit, and this season has seemed to make things even more complicated.

On a positive note, at least head coach Rex Ryan has slimmed down to, what looks to be, a much healthier physique. All joking aside, the AFC doesn’t look to be all that competitive this season, giving the Jets a little more hope in potentially fighting for a Wild Card berth.

Plus, they get to play the NFC West that, for years, has been the NFC’s weakest division despite having seen much improvement this year.

That’s all pending on whether or not this team can start to figure things out by playing inspired football and turning it into wins.

Top 5 Fantasy Flubs Mike Pendleton Staff Writer

In the internet phenomena that we call Fantasy Football, there are always under-performing guys that we like to call busts. It’s been a crazy NFL season through Week five (anyone else have the Cardinals at 4-1?).

With Fantasy Football becoming a much more serious game than it ever has been, it’s also made fans around the world become haters of under-performing studs.

While injuries are always part of game, there comes a point in time when NFL players need to step up for their team and their respective fantasy owners. That being said, here are your Top 5 Fantasy Football Busts through Week five.

1) Matthew Stafford, QB, Detroit Lions: He’s coming off his “breakout” season which everyone expected him to improve off this year. He was in an elite 5,000 passing yard club last season which also featured Drew Brees and Tom Brady. With Calvin Johnson being his go-to guy, it almost seemed that there was no way they could be stopped. Reality hit and, through five weeks, Stafford has thrown for 1,182 yards, three touchdowns and

four interceptions. If the Lions want to be taken seriously, their quarterback must seriously get it together.

2) Darren McFadden, RB, Oakland Raiders: I know it sounds crazy to have McFadden over Chris Johnson here, but if you still have Chris Johnson, you should question your football knowledge. Things had been looking down for CJ2K since last season, while Darren McFadden came in with healthy hope. While Oakland has struggled as a whole on offense, nobody more than McFadden has carried the ball 57 times for a lousy 201 yards and one touchdown. His best game came against Pittsburgh’s injured defense, showing it may be a fluke. McFadden hasn’t lived up to hype since entering the NFL and still can’t help his fantasy owners.

3) Dez Bryant, WR, Dallas Cowboys: It’s sad to see a first-round pick have more security guards than touchdowns through four games of the season. While the Cowboys have put Dez Bryant on a more restricted life schedule, there almost seems to be nothing more than work ethic holding him back. He could be a top-five receiver in the NFL and in fantasy if he got his attitude straight.

Until then, he’s nothing more than a fantasy afterthought with only 21 receptions and 269 yards.

4) Jordy Nelson, WR, Green Bay Packers: Normally when a player goes down, opportunity knocks for the next in line. The problem with Jordy Nelson is he’s still stuck trying to answer the door. With only 23 receptions, 289 yards and one touchdown, Nelson is only slightly better than Dez Bryant. The good part about Nelson is he’s been consistently bad with his numbers on the road and home. With Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, there should be no reason for failure, minus the horrible Green Bay offensive line. Owners can only hope Greg Jennings’ return will help Nelson come back to life.

5) Cam Newton, QB, Carolina Panthers: This pick is a painful one.

Newton is coming off an incredible, never-believed, rookie season where

he broke Peyton Manning’s rookie passing yard record while setting a record for the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. Newton has all the skills, players and tools to make big things happen but his lack of effort has really shown during his sophomore slump. I highly recommend that you bench him until he has three good weeks in a row. So far he has 1,154 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions, clearly showing a lack of determination compared to last year. This might have seemed like a harsh list, but stats are law in Fantasy Football. None of these five guys should hold a significant spot in your heart or on your starting roster until they produce.
