Campus Wide Initiative to Rock the Vote

Members of the campus community delivered over 2,000 voter registration forms to county offices in Essex and Passaic counties yesterday.

Over the past few weeks,

Montclair State has been taking the initiative to get the 4,500 resident students on campus registered to vote. Heavily involved in the registration process is the Student Government Association, Residential Education, Femvolution and LASO.

“As of today, we have well over 2,000 residential students who have registered to vote in our local districts,” Mario Rapetti, Associate Director of Residential Education, said. “As with any election, we want to make sure that every vote counts. College stu-

dents are a prime population that can be overlooked when they live away from home and we want to make sure their vote is in on Election Day.” Registration efforts include speeches from the SGA to their legislature stressing the importance

of making sure students know about voter registration drives around campus. Organizations have held table hours in hopes of registering students. Additionally, the SGA and staff from Residential Education have gone door to door Vote Continued on Page 3

Students Come Out to Support Hungry Coming Out Week for Change Catherine Baxter News Editor

One of the biggest changes students saw this year was the new food options on campus. With the renovation of Freeman Dining Hall, the new crepe bar in the Rath and a new sushi vendor in the Student Center Cafeteria, students have many new choices from Sodexo Dining Services.

However, as the semester starts to shift into full gear, students are beginning to question if some of these changes are for the better.

One of the biggest changes students saw was the complete renovation of the Freeman Dining Hall. Along with an entire new interior, students can now order fresh food throughout the day.

Currently, three kiosks are located in the dining hall, and students are able to order food fresh. Students are then given beepers that alert them when their food is ready. The new addition of a large screen now shows how much longer students can expect to wait for their food.

National Coming Out Day is Oct. 11 and next week Montclair State will once again be hosting Coming Out Week.

Coming Out Week is hosted by the LGBT Center, located in CSI.

The LGBT Center seeks to create an open, accepting and affirming atmosphere for LGBT students, faculty, staff and their allies at MSU. Through education, programming and discussion groups, the LGBT Center allows for unique and important conver-

sations regarding LGBT issues.

In celebration of Coming Out Week, the LGBT center will kick off on Monday, Oct. 8 with a flag raising ceremony. Additionally, several guest speakers are scheduled to talk about the significance

Trick or Threat? Post Your Thoughts

The YouTube sensation Slenderman can be played in a game known as Slender.

Students in Blanton Hall are now under investigation, as threatening notes with the internet sensation “Slenderman” threatening to rape students appeared in the 5th floor of the building.

Slenderman is a character from your nightmares. An extremely tall, masculine figure wearing a suit with nothing but a white, featureless face lurks behind trees and in the backgrounds of photos.

Originally a joke on the Something Awful forum, Slenderman quickly spread all over social media sites. Users of Reddit created a Photoshop contest to see who could insert Slenderman into the eeriest of pictures. Members of Youtube created various channels with homemade videos of Slenderman coming after them. Now, anyone can run from Slenderman by playing a game known simply as Slender.

However, the game seems to have transcended from pixels to clear cut paper, as many Slenderman notes

were found on the 5th floor of Blanton on Sept. 25th at 10 a.m.

The CAs of the 5th floor removed the posters from the wall. They then proceeded to email their residents.

Calli Lowe, a 5th floor resident recalled the events, “I received an email from my CA. The email stated that someone put up a picture of the Slenderman with the words ‘I will rape you.’ I wasn’t really afraid, but then again I wasn’t sure what the Slenderman was, but it did put my CA into disarray.”

The investigation was held Wednesday, Sept. 27th in Blanton Hall. The images were removed from the walls before the police arrived. The posters were reported to be regular pictures of the Slenderman, with the exception of one.

One of the posters had his picture with the words “I’m going to rape you” printed on it. Though the pictures were posted along the halls and not addressed to anyone, the message was still disturbing to most residents.

Lieutenant Barrett of UPD stated, “Residents and students in general need to be mindful that postings of any sort may be considered offensive in one way or another to our fellow community members.

Free speech is an extraordinarily important right and we need to get in front of it, talk publicly and remember we have an obligation to not only the law but the Code of Student Conduct.”

Though the message was not addressed to anyone, officers believed that the message could be malicious in nature, it also broke the Student’s Code of Conduct, being it wasn’t approved to be posted.

A few residents of the floor were questioned about the situation, as well as any people who had Slenderman-related pictures posted in their rooms.

As of now, no leads have been found, but the matter is still being investigated. Any student or staff member with information on the incident are urged to alert the University Police Department at x5222.

Whether you are looking for a place to let off some steam or just have no one to talk to, the Student Center Annex is the place to be.

From now until Oct. 12, the Center for Student Involvement is hosting the Post Secret event in the Student Center Annex, across from the Commuter Lounge.

Students can come here to anonymously submit a note on a Post It to let out their feelings, stress, anxiety or whatever is holding them down.

According to the student email sent out by CSI, "This is a way for students to release their stress, thoughts, challenges and feelings anonymously on a Post It." "I think this is a fantastic idea," said Mary Boton, a commuter student. "Sometimes, you just have that one thing sitting on your chest that you just can't tell anyone else.

It's such a little thing, but at the same time it's also empowering."

Although students can submit anything they would like, it must be appropriate. Not all Post It notes

will be posted on the windows in the Annex.

However, this project is also about secrets. CSI would like students to know that religious views and suggestions will not be posted because it takes away from those who are expressing their personal beliefs.

Students are also reminded that anything submitted with a specific name or organization will not be posted. All notes will remain anonymous throughout the entire event.

This event has been done in the past, and every year students consider it such a success and a method of relief.

"I love when we can do the Post Secret," said Mark Shapito, junior.

"I love reading everybody else's secrets, especially since most of the time it makes my own problems seem really silly. People talk about being depressed or struggling in classes, and I realize I'm not alone."

“Residential Education and Services have been storming the halls working with our fantastic Community Assistant staff to talk to their residents about registering to vote in our districts. They have been a huge help in working on completing this important task,” Rapetti said.

The Office of Government Relations has assisted in the voter registration effort by filling out and highlighting voter registration forms for all resident students, making registering even simpler.

Last Thursday, Syrus Yarbrough of MTV’s "The Real World" spoke to students in Memorial Auditorium about the importance of getting out and voting.

Other campus events such as LASO’s “I Have A D.R.E.A.M” this afternoon in the Student Center Ballrooms and the first debate for the US senate race between Senators Bob Menendez and Joe Kyrillos at the John J. Cali School of Music’s Leshowitz Recital Hall tonight all promote the importance of being engaged in politics.

“So far it’s [registration] been going really, really well. We know we need to give a reason why to vote.

At our event, we’re going to talk about The Dream Act, talk about what’s happened throughout the past year and what’s going to happen in the future if we don’t vote,” Monica Pardo, Vice President of LASO said. “With the voting registration, it gives students not just a voice on campus, but in the United

States as well.”

Due to Montclair State’s expansion, resident students register in either Passaic or Essex counties.

Residents of Freeman and Russ register to vote in Essex County, while all other resident students in The Heights and the Clove Road residences register in Passaic County.

“I believe that students should be involved in the political process [...]

It is a crucial time for the masses to get to the voting booths, and that means the student body as well,” Student Government President George Juzdan said.

Now that most of the voter registration forms are turned in, the Superintendent of Elections and other county officials now decide how many polling stations will be placed on campus based on the volume of voter registration forms turned in.

Tentative polling sites are Sinatra Hall, Machuga Heights and Dinallo Heights for Passaic County and Russ Hall for students registered in Essex County.

“Our major goal is to support and educate our student population on having their voice heard and to be civically involved citizens,” Rapetti said.

On the ballot this November is the bond referendum for $750 million, which if passed, will grant higher education, including Montclair State, funding.

The School of Communication and Media will be producing an “Election Preview” webcast on Nov. 2 with information about New Jersey politics and the presidential races.

"Forgotten War" Remembered

Candelight vigil to be held in honor of lives lost in Afghan War

Of the many soldiers who have fought during the war, approximately 2,000 Americans have lost their lives.

Oct. 5th marks the 11th anniversary of our presence in Afghanistan, also known as the ‘’Forgotten War.” It’s been over a decade and still we see no signs of fallout. Regardless of how sheltered we may be, being that the war is indeed overseas, one way or another we are all affected.

As sheltered as we are, citizens should feel the need to be aware of how our country’s involvement in Afghanistan affect everyone here at home. The fact is, this war cannot even be considered an official war.

If we think back to the follow- up actions after the attack on the U.S. on Sept. 11th, 2001, we never saw an official declaration. Our involvement in Afghanistan has turned into one of the most controversial topics U.S. citizens could ever find themselves discussing.

In 2001, the United States and its allies launched "Operation En-

during Freedom." What fuelled and continues to fuel our current presence in the Middle East is our goal to disassemble Al-Qaeda and its radical members. Allied with the current Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, which was overthrown by the Taliban in 1996, the U.S. hoped to stop Al-Qaeda and extremists alike.

The U.S. State Department estimates at least 919,967 casualties since the start of patrols in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Over 12,000 Afghani and approximately 2,000 U.S. civilians and military personnel have lost their lives thus far in Afghanistan alone.

At this point, the Obama administration has taken a more different approach than what President George W. Bush first had in mind.

Rather than try to "win" the war, President Obama puts an emphasis on simply ending it.

President Obama and his administration seek what they are calling a "leave Afghan in good terms" so-

lution. Doubt of the government’s intention to actually withdraw our troops grew when Obama failed to meet his deadline of Sept. 2012, the date where troops were to begin their journey back home.

To commemorate the 11th anniversary of the War in Afghanistan at MSU, Mark Ludas of the SGA and Leah Stone share the idea of holding a vigil on Oct. 4 to commemorate the war and its dedicated troops and veterans.

The event will take place on the Student Center Quad at 8:30 p.m. and is open to the public. Students and members of our community will gather towards the front of the Quad, near the stage, and listen to their fellow peers speak about the war and the vigil itself.

They will then follow up with a lighting of candles and experience a moment of silence as everyone gathers around. Ludas and Stone hope to have at least 140 candles lit, each one representing 100 Afghan civilian and military casualties. The

event was planned with the support of the Students for Democratic Society.

"I hope students can take away from this experience the feeling and awareness of what it truly means to be engaged in a long-term war in a distant land,” Ludas says.

Ludas continues to relay a new perspective of how the war is affecting our country.

"Above and beyond the financial costs, it is easy for us to forget that lives are being lost on a day to day basis, and that though protecting our American freedom is of great importance, the government can take advantage in its initiatives regarding war on other nations at the expense of our men and women in uniform,” said Ludas.

"It’s good to see young people be a part of commemorating the war and our troops’ efforts,” said Michelle Celestin, student and veteran. “It’s always a great thing to see people be aware of worldly issues.”

Students were excited when Freeman Dining Hall was renovated, until the wait time for food became impossibly long.

The renovations were considered great by students at first. The quality was great, the food was fast and tasted delicious. However, as time has gone on, the quality has depleted a bit and the wait sometimes becomes unbearable.

Occasionally, the kitchen will get backed up with orders during key times of the day, usually during dinner. This tends to lead to an extremely long wait time before students receive their food, making getting a bite to eat before class a bit of a hassle.

"The quality has definitely taken a hit," said Kevin Young, resident of Freeman Hall. "However, it hasn't gotten to a point where it's not enjoyable. It also kind of eliminated the wait time a bit, since less people

are coming here now. I also like how we have the option to make our own sandwiches now."

Some students seem to be understanding of the wait.

"Though everyone says that Freeman has become more of a hassle, I believe they just need time to master the new system before it becomes MSU's number one food attraction," said Andrew Lopez, resident of Freeman Hall.

"The new cafeteria was a great idea," said Madison Mazur, resident of Freeman Hall. "It was outdated and quite ugly. Unfortunately, it's only the physical appearance of the dining hall that was enhanced. In my opinion, the food and service quality has gotten worse since last year."

Even though Dining Services is receiving mixed reviews about the new dining hall, they are still listening to students' opinions and making adjustments as needed.

"Freeman is getting better and better each day," said Andrew Pignataro, Director of Auxiliary Services. "The three new ordering kiosks are in place and the order monitor was installed. The kitchen staff is preparing the food faster than ever.

As with all goods things, the food is worth waiting for. Students are loving the made to order items. Let's not forget, the items at Sam's are fresh and made to order too."

Aside from Freeman Hall, the rest of the changes to dining seem to be a huge hit.

dessert bar in the Rath, if you have not tried the s'more crepe yet, you should head over there right now.

Even the new sushi vendor in the cafeteria is getting great feedback, although at first students missed the old bar in the Rath.

Plans for The Plaza at Blanton are moving along as well.

"It is my goal to have the Sub Connection and Marketplace open on Oct. 13th," said Pignataro. "The GFOC will be right behind with an opening goal of 10/29. And last but not least, the goal date for Dunkin Donuts is 11/12."

Safety First: Crime Rates on Campus Catherine Baxter News Editor

In accordance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, colleges are required to report their annual crime and fire rates.

The information from 2011 was made available to students in an email on Oct. 1, 2012.

In the email, President Susan Cole stated, "The safety program at Montclair State University is a community effort for the general benefit of students, faculty, staff and visitors. We are partners in creating an environment that is safe and promotes learning, social interaction and leisure activities."

"A university community, like a residential community, reflects the society at large. As in other places, crime does occur on university campuses. Montclair State University has taken many steps to create a secure campus. This brochure contains important information on crime prevention and is intended to increase your safety awareness."

"Let us work together to increase awareness and deter crime in order to maintain a secure campus."

The information available includes fire statistics, crime rates and safety programs available to students on campus.

The following information listed comes directly from the websites given, which can be found online on the University Police or Fire Safety websites.

VOTER REGISTRATION & VOTING FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS

College students can register to vote in New Jersey by following the standard application process: every prospective voter must submit a voter registration application.

You can register to vote if: • You are a United States citizen • You will be 18 years of age by the next election • You will be a resident of the State and county 30 days before the election • You are NOT currently serving a sentence, probation or parole If you are in college, you have the option to register from your college address or your parent's address. There are good reasons for registering and voting at either residence, but keep in mind, the final choice is yours.

The registration deadline to vote is 21* days prior to Election Day. You will receive a sample ballot about 1 week before the election that will indicate where your polling place is. *Voter Registration closes on October 16, 2012. Starting Monday, Oct. 8th, the SGA and its executive branch SLAM will be organizing the annual Homecoming week.

On Friday, Oct.12, SLAM is hosting a foam party from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The foam party will be located in Lot 60. DJ Spinbad will be featured at this event.

Ticket sales start today, Oct. 4 in the Student Center Annex at 8 a.m., with the lineup starting at 4 a.m.

Students must have a ticket to attend this event, and tickets must be purchased in advance.

After this presale, tickets will be sold in the SGA office through Betty DeRose, the office administrator.

The tickets cost $10 for MSU students and $20 for non-MSU guests.

Michelle Pisarri, press secretary for the SGA and an organizer for the SLAM event said,“We did the dayglow party last year; this year it is dayglow, but instead of paint, it’s foam.”

Those attending the event must

be at least 18 years old and have a photo ID. There will be no food, drink or bags allowed. Intoxicated individuals will not be admitted or, if found, will be removed from the event.

Attendees are encouraged to wear anything that they do not mind getting soaked.

Parking for the event will be in the NJ Transit Deck. Lot 60 will be closed to traffic. There are no refunds for the event.

Another big change for this year is the addition of another performance.

"We wanted to do more than one big event in the fall semester," said George Juzdan, SGA President.

"We're planning the Foam Party for Homecoming, along with a concert in November."

The performer has not been announced as of yet, but will be released once the contract is signed.

The GLBTQ Safe Space Program classifies offices of MSU faculty, staff and students that are safe places for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Such offices are identified with the Safe Space decal. The LGBT Center will also be offering the Safe Space training during Coming Out Week.

The Safe Space Training from the LGBT Center goes over everything from terminology, the coming out process and the community. To identify those who mark themselves as a Safe Space, faculty doors will have pink triangles, as well as students wearing theirs on backpacks or clothing.

“The point of the pink triangle or pin is to represent visibility,” said Perez. “If a student ever has a problem and needs some assistance, they know who to approach.

Moreover, approachability is vital.

There is an Out and Ally list, which is simply faculty listed by their department who have requested to be on this list, saying they have a safe space and are a supporter of the center.”

On Tuesday, the Office of Greek Affairs and the LGBT Center will be co-sponsoring a panel discussion including members of the LGBT community and those who are of color called "Beyond Color LGBT Perspective."

On Wednesday, the LGBT Center

and Players are co-sponsoring an exciting event called "Diva Jeopardy." This version will be specifically related to all things diva, including female music artists.

“Diva Jeopardy sounds fun,” said Daniella Rodrigues. “I will come out to support the LGBT Community.”

Thursday will feature Coming Out Across Cultures, focusing on comparing and contrasting the coming out process throughout other cultures. Since Thursday is National Coming Out Day, there will be students and faculty walking around campus wearing their “Likes” t-shirts.

On Friday, there will be a showing of the critically acclaimed drama "Pariah" at the Student Recreation Center. "Pariah" tells the story of a Brooklyn teenager who juggles conflicting identities and risks friendship and heartbreak in a desperate search for sexual expression.

Lastly, on Sunday, Alex Horwitz, a member of SPECTRUMS and Alpha Phi Omega will be telling his journey of faith and spirituality as the guest preacher at the MSU Web of Life worship service.

Throughout the entire week, the LGBT Center is hosting the Messages of Hope Campaign. This is the first time MSU is hosting Messages of Hope. This is a box that will be left for students to leave anonymous and private messages through the coming out process.

center said he was inspired by the “It Gets Better” campaign. Boxes will be placed all along residential halls, on the front desks and in the center as well. After the “Messages of Hope,” the center came up with several other ideas of what to do with the messages. One thought is to make copies of all the messages and spread them around campus for inspiration.

“Since it is very personal, it would be nice to make them all into a collage on a board so people can see them at different locations on campus,” said Perez.

On campus, there are many means of support for members of the LGBT community. CAPS hosts Living Out Loud on Tuesdays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and is a support group for students who are in the process of coming out and would rather not live in silence anymore.

No Boundaries is a bi-weekly discussion group held on Mondays from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Drop-In Center. Students of all orientations and genders come together and discuss various topics surrounding sexuality. The Q17 meeting is every Wednesday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. and covers issues relevant to the LGBT community.

“The [amount of students who come] doesn’t matter,” said Perez.

“I don’t look at success by the number of people that come; you have to look at what they take away from it at the end of the day.”

The LGBT Center has many goals through Coming Out Week.

The center is there to support the developmental process, well-being, academic success and retention of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students. They also try to increase community awareness and knowledge about sexual orientation and gender identity.

“It’s how you get through those hard times that builds character and really how you get through it makes all the difference,” Perez said.

Many students are excited to show their support during coming out week.

“I am a big LGBT supporter,” said student Monica Adams. “My best friend is gay and I don’t ever wish him unequal rights because of it. I’ve even helped volunteer at Garden State Equality, who works towards more gay rights.”

“I did not know it was National Coming Out Day,” said student Kasey Simone. “I am a supporter of our LGBT community. Everyone should have the right to be themselves.”

For students who have any questions or concerns, or just need a place to talk, the LGBT Center is located in the Student Center Annex in the Center for Student Involvement.

Scarf This Up

Scarfs are a fashion staple for fall. They can jazz up an outfit, be used to protect your hair from the rain or provide a little added warmth. Out and about on campus I found a variety of scarfs in different colors and textures. I’d have to say my favorite scarfs have tassel details along the edges. There are so many ways to wear a scarf, as I saw walking around campus. However, I want to give you three step-by-step ways you can wear this trend.

1.

My first style is specifically for scarfs that are longer in length. Through my experiences, wearing a longer scarf draped over your neck can get in the way and can look a little sloppy. So, my quick fix is simply making each side of the scarf equal and then taking the ends and tying them into a knot! It’s easy and convenient.

2.

My second style is better for when it gets really cold outside. This works for any sized scarf. First, you want to fold the scarf in half, creating two equal sides.

The scarf is now half of its original size. One side is the ends of the scarf and the other side is the fold. Next, hang the scarf over your neck while keeping the scarf still folded in half. Again, the one side of the scarf that is now hung over your neck has just the ends of the scarf while the other side is the folded part of the scarf. Next, just pull the ends of the scarf through the folded part. This style works well when you’re wearing a bulky jacket.

My third style is for a medium-sized scarf. Hang the scarf over your neck.

Make sure each end of the scarf is even. This is my easiest style. Take one side and tie a knot on the one side and do the same for the other. This style takes a regular scarf into a more thought out style.

Making It Big : “West A Lifestyle” Jessica Czarnogursky Feature Editor

Making it big in any industry today takes more than just guts and talent. It takes brawn, brains and more than just a little determination. Looking around this campus, it’s easy to see the budding talent of our future generation. Look a little deeper though, and you’ll find talent that’s already started to bloom.

Meet Rasaki Adewumni, a junior here at Montclair and owner of his own clothing line/brand called West A Lifestyle. Through a brief interview with Rasaki, it’s easy to see that he has a passion and a dream, and he won’t stop until it’s fulfilled.

Q. Any fashion icons/inspirations for your collection?

A. My biggest inspiration for my collection is life in general. There’s so much to life that can inspire me, on any given day, to go and work hard on improving my collection. My fashion inspiration is Pharrell Williams. I like how his line, Billionaire Boys Club, is usually very simple and high quality. If you look at my collection you will notice the simplicity and how I value quality over quantity.

Q. What inspired you to start your clothing line?

Q. What about some background? How did this all begin?

A. The idea of actually creating the clothing company started in the late summer of 2008. I was on the PATH train coming from New York when two friends and I realized that we shared the same interest of creating a clothing company. We decided that we should actually work on the idea and make it come to fruition. We called the company “West A Lifestyle” only because we were all from West Africa.

That same night, I went home and created a blog for West A Lifestyle (WALS) that would showcase our art and lifestyle. After months of blogging, designing and gaining a huge fanbase, the first West A Lifestyle product was released in November 2009.

Q. How do you get yourself known to the public?

A. During this digital age, the internet and social media has served as a great tool to get the company known to the public. I also use promotional items like buttons and stickCreator Rasaki Adewumni ers to promote the company.

A. Yes, the clothing has been featured in several fashion shows, on several websites/blogs and we’ve also had a radio interview live on air.

A. I always dreamed of creating my own line, especially since I grew up during the era where artists like P.Diddy and Jay-Z had their own lines called Sean John and Roc-A-Wear respectively. I looked up to those guys. Then one day I decided to turn my dreams into reality with some friends.

Lessons from Meat Loaf on Love and Life Melanie Tolomeo Staff Writer

“Though it’s cold and lonely in the deep dark night/I can see paradise by the dashboard light” belts Meat Loaf and a soulful choir, harmonizing every note in “Paradise by the Dashboard Light.” Surely you know this song, but perhaps have not analyzed it as deeply as I am about to now. Here’s my thesis: The song is not just a karaoke staple; it teaches lessons about life, love and immediate gratification. To refresh your memory, the song goes back-and-forth between the points of view of a high school man and woman that are about to have their first sexual encounter. The woman is enjoying herself but reluctant about sliding “home,” as the baseball metaphor that is mentioned frequently in the song would symbolize. She asks the man if he loves her and be with her forever, and the man is reluctant to answer, with “paradise” just around the bend.

Ultimately he says, “Yes,” and vows to a life of misery. From this song, there are two central lessons: 1. Sleep on it

“Let me sleep on it/I’ll give you an answer in the morning” Meat Loaf sings slyly, postponing the answer to his girlfriend’s question to when he can better assess the situation. Taken out of context, this teaches a valuable lesson. For instance, let’s say someone has just returned from an amazing trip abroad to Zimbabwe. He met a woman there and found his passion in Zimbabwean economics. But before putting a down payment on a Zimbabwean house, he should probably prepare a bowl of soup and nap off his jet lag. People tend to assess their wants based on what makes them feel good in that moment. But after a few days, positive feelings often wear-off and plans may become outdated.

Don’t make a commitment until after that grace period, because it will often not be something easily reseverable. But if that longing is still there after a few months, I think you should follow that spark because it was not weathered by time or circumstance.

2. You Can’t Do Things Backwards

There is also a lesson to be learned from the female in the song. “Do you love me?/Will you love me forever?/Do you need me? Will you never leave me?” the woman prods. The man is at her mercy, because she is willing to stop the action if she doesn’t get an answer. But pillow talk is cheap. Perspectives can be different between two partners, and what is viewed as an extension of love by one partner (à la the woman in the song) is viewed as just plain sex by another (the man). Sex will not spark love, and the woman in the song seems to be holding sex over the man’s head to secure his love. Likewise, having children won’t secure love. Buying someone things won’t secure love. The only thing that will secure love is love. Just listen to the end of the song, during which they are both miserable, “waiting till the end of time” so they will not be attached anymore. Two 17 year-olds making a decision that affects the rest of their lives based on a distorted view of love, some endorphins and a stiff penis, makes no sense. Let love happen naturally.

Helicopter Parenting Jocelyn Choi Staff Writer

Do your parents call you on your cell phone to wake you up for class, or tell you to study for a particular test? Do they talk to your professors for you? If so, the cell phone is the world’s longest umbilical cord.

Your parents have good intentions, but they may not have the right ones.

In other words, it may be time to cut the cord.

This type of parent-child relationship may sound bizarre to most of us. We know that a normal adult probably would be less satisfied with their situation in life should they not be exercising their ability to make their own decisions such as those mentioned above. One may ask why this obviously unhappy child is not setting boundaries. Maybe it’s not the child’s fault. After all, they have to brave through college first in order to become financially independent.

According to a USA Today article released last week entitled “Do helicopter parents help or harm the kids?” They can be a positive — if they don’t overdo it. Some parents hover over their children and fail to value their children’s own decision-making processes. Unsurprisingly, this may cause their 18-33 year-old children to have psychological damage such as anxiety and depression. These parents believe that in order to “love” their children, they must worry or at least appear to worry, sometimes to the point where they do everything for them. Little do they seem to know that this kind of “obsessive loving” may backfire. The child may become dependent on them forever and for every minor thing, which is exasperating for anybody.

Children of helicopter parents, at first glance, seem highly driven because their parents forced them into every challenging and extra-curricular activity available. What’s interesting is that a study done of university students showed that students who had helicopter parents were actually less engaged in school. And, of course, if the parents see their children less engaged, the parents fly in like some superhero to “save” their children.

I’m beginning to wonder if some of my fellow classmates are actually suffering from this affliction. Sitting in the back rows of a lecture hall is an anomaly for me, but I sat there one day because I had arrived late.

And there, I found another world — many of my neighbors didn’t seem to have a clue why they were in that room. I could be wrong, but there they were — quietly typing away on Facebook, doing some fall online shopping, playing games, watching movies starring Matthew McConaughey, checking out restaurants, etc. Meanwhile, I’m amused when thinking how ironic this whole situation is — the professor is going on for two hours about baseless arguments…Haven’t we signed up for this elaborate four year payment plan to actually learn something? These students may as well have stuck a sign on their forehead that read “My academic advisor told me this class was required.” To me, it’s like that girl in the YouTube video who waited on line for hours in front of the store to get the new iPhone, but didn’t know any of the new features it had.

I’m not trying to debase anyone. I was among them during one of my semesters as an undergrad. Maturity levels take into account for this behavior; some students just aren’t ready for the responsibilities of college life. Also, the class may not be interesting enough for them but, honestly, that’s not anyone’s problem but their own.

Meanwhile, the rest of the world remains perplexed. If someone asked any college student why they were in college, what would you expect them to say? “I want to study blank so I can become a blank or something like.” “I don’t know. My parents made me come.” I implore my dear readers to investigate: how long is your umbilical cord?

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month Suzanne Joblonski Staff Writer

You know October is here when all the talk on campus is of Homecoming and dreaded midterms. However, something else is happening. It is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, also known as Intimate Partner Violence. For me, it has been my mission since leaving my abusive marriage, to inform, educate and empower folks who are being abused or know someone in such a relationship. To let you and them know, you are not alone and help is out there. This year, I created a Facebook page to serve this purpose: www.facebook.com/DomesticViolenceAffectsEvery1.

You may ask what domestic violence is. People often believe domestic violence is usually an isolated one-time incident that affects only poor and uneducated people, where abusers are only men who are also alcohol abusers and that it is the fault of the women for staying in these relationships.

The myths are far from true. Because of the way domestic violence laws were originally written, victims were females and batterers were males.

Make no mistake: women can be the abuser and men the abused. It also occurs in same-sex relationships, as well as where there are people living with disabilities in intimate relations. There is a great website that is filled with national and worldwide resources at : www.safe4all.org.

Getting help means acknowledging there is a problem. Assistance can be found in the United States by calling 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or 1-800787-3244 (TTY) for referrals for help in a given area. In New Jersey, one can call 1-800-572-SAFE (SAFE). There is also information on the Internet, but be careful, as web browsing on a computer you and your abuser share can be tracked. If you find yourself in this situation, find another computer to use, such as one belonging to a trusted friend or at the library. This holds true for your cell phone, too. Delete phone numbers or assign false names in the contact list.

This semester, the Center is conducting a series of conversations on this issue, such as Cycle Breakers. This is a conversation group aimed to combat domestic violence and discuss thoughts and feelings on this issue. It is held on Tuesdays from 2 to 3 p.m. in Student Center Room 421.

In addition, the newly formed Women’s and Gender Studies club will be hosting an event on Oct. 16 from 2:30 to 5:00 in UN 2010.

There will be a screening of the film Crime After Crime, followed by a discussion, and presentation by yours truly.

Sometimes we watch our loved ones who we suspect are experiencing domestic violence from afar and we wish and beg them to get out, but it is not always that easy, especially when there are children involved or their immigration status is dependent on the spouse or partner. However, there are steps you can take while encouraging empowering friends and loved ones in this difficult and emotional situation. Be supportive of whether they wish to stay or not, but if they are willing, help them develop a safety plan, sit with them as they call the hotline and offer to do Internet research. Most of all, though, remember it is their decision to make, not yours.

Once you are ready to take the steps to leave the abusive situation, you need a plan. The safety plan below comes from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. (NCADV)

During the planning stages of leaving, there is helpful but often over looked advice. The Coalition also suggests, “You should take important papers and documents with you to enable you to apply for benefits or take legal action. Important papers you should take include social security cards and birth certificates for you and your children, your marriage license, leases or deeds in your name or both yours and your partner’s names, your checkbook, your charge cards, bank statements and charge account statements, insurance policies, proof of income for you and your spouse (pay stubs or W-2’s) and any documentation of past incidents of abuse (photos, police reports, medical records, etc.).”

•Keep change with you at all times.

•Memorize all important numbers.

•Establish a “code word” or “sign” so that family, friends, teachers or co-workers know when to call for help.

•Think about what you will say to your partner if he or she becomes violent.

Coming Out and Cutting Out

oming Out Week is approaching and it seems the LGBT Center has already run out of free shirts. Hopefully, most students who had the opportunity to get a shirt will wear them and show their support on Oct. 11th. We all know that MSU is a school built on the principles of equality.

We have a huge LGBT community on campus, as well as other diverse clubs. We have clubs such as LASO, UAASO,

I

OSAU, Femvolution and many other political activist groups on campus.

Montclair State University is, in fact, a miniature melting pot of individuals.

I guess being 30 minutes from the biggest melting pot, New York City, as stressed on every campus tour, must have its influence on us. Although we all have different interests and point of views, MSU is a relatively peaceful university.

events such as Coming Out Week are. Our campus might be a safe place for individuals to express themselves, but beyond MSU is a whole other world, the world outside of college which is plagued with homophobia.

The people in our world will sometimes only see with their literal eye by shunning those of different genders and skin colors. One recent example was the IKEA fiasco earlier this week. IKEA has hundreds of stores all over the

world and an edition of their catalogs was shipped to Saudi Arabia, but with a minor adjustment. The catalog featured women in regular clothing, but IKEA decided to edit them out.

Saudi Arabia has always been a male dominated country, but women have been constantly pushing for equality.

Something as simple as driving rights is impossible for Saudi women to obtain.

When IKEA printed these catalogs, they squandered any hope for women to gain rights. Naturally, no Saudi newspapers had any complaints about the catalogs.

IKEA had taken their current culture into consideration, but not the current struggles of women in the country.

IKEA wasn’t let off the hook, though. Many newspapers in IKEA’s homeland of Sweden harshly criticized the company for the edits. IKEA apologized for their blunder, but the damage cannot be undone. This is a prime example of inequality in the world and there are many more, but for the sake of keeping this editorial short we won’t mention them.

Every country has some

form of bias, though a lot of times it is less apparent among more developed nations.

We may never be able to completely erase bias behaviors, but we, as students, have an obligation to uphold.

Our obligation is to help create a safe campus for all groups. That is why Coming Out Week is a very important time for us.

We have the opportunity to make every kind of student feel comfortable. Let’s not be like IKEA and crush people’s hopes and dreams.

When discrimination hits people all around the world, there needs to be a safe haven for those who suffer.

For MSU students, it is our campus. This is considered home to residents and commuters alike. When we think home we think about the old phrase, “Home is where the heart is.”

Coming Out Week is the perfect time to express the home and heart, maybe not so much with a home cooked meal, but with warm embraces and acceptance.

Resident Students Fed Up with Sub-Par Customer Service Professionalism a dish served cold on campus

I

‘ve always been underwhelmed with the customer service around campus, Lindsay RassmanN but recent Managing Editor exchanges, or lack thereof, in the dining facilities has made me lose whatever hope I was holding on to.

I’ll admit that sometimes, as students, we can be hard to deal with, due to the stress that we’re almost always under, and from working in retail for a number of years, I also understand how annoying customers can be.

However, any “real world” company would never allow the low level of customer service that’s consistently seen on Montclair’s campus.

Whether its Sam’s Place or the Student Center, there’s no avoiding the sighs, slow-paced and generally snarky service that defines the customer service around campus.

I consistently feel as if I’m inconveniencing the dining staff by my patronage. More often than not, I have “silent exchanges” with every person involved in my meal process.

From the person I give my order to, to the person who rings me up, it amazes me how little the staff appears to care about the very students whose money keeps Montclair State afloat and them employed.

The other day I bought a coffee from the C-Store and had a completely quiet transaction. The cashier didn’t tell me how much my total came to, didn’t ask how I wanted to pay and didn’t tell me hello or goodbye. Nothing. Complete silence.

A few days before this, I went to the Student Center to grab dinner on my way back home.

Unfortunately for me, I wanted food an hour before they closed. I

stood waiting for someone to come to the Wok Stop for at least 15 minutes (there was no line) while the whole time multiple employees were standing around and others were cleaning up, obviously more concerned about leaving than taking care of the few customers milling around desperately trying to order food.

How no one would ask me and the other people waiting, what we wanted or if they could help us, boggles my mind. It’s simple customer service. I’m not asking for much, but prompt and professional service would be a good place to start.

A few friends and I once waited for 20 minutes at the Red Hawk Diner last semester waiting to give our drink order, or any order for that matter. Nobody came by, and we left without any of the staff even knowing we left.

These are just my feelings, although I have talked to friends who all have similar horror stories. No student should ever feel unwelcome,

especially at a place where they reside for nine months out of the year.

A “hi” here or “how are you doing” there would go a long way.

Personally, I’d like to not feel rushed and stressed immediately upon entering one of our campus dining facilities.

There are a few people around campus who have kept my faith in the sanctity of customer service alive, and I appreciate their efforts in trying to do the best job they can.

However, as a whole, dining services has room for improvement before they can boast about having good customer service.

As students we have a lot going on. Of all the things I could be doing right now, I shouldn’t have to be concerned about the customer service around campus so much that I feel it necessary to write this article.

Good service was something I took for granted, and now that it’s gone, I appreciate it all the more.

Roll Out Of Bed And Into The Voting Booths

Casting your ballot on campus both convenient and accessible

T

his is a very important year because of the upcoming Presidential elections.

The front runner Sekinah Brodie nominations columnist belong to Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney.

The polls have been pretty close so far, there is no telling what the outcome may be come November.

The most important thing is that as Americans, young or old, we need to exercise our right to vote.

The youth demographic (ages 1834) is notorious for being the most passive group in the country when it comes to politics.

Whether it is miseducation about the government, or just think-

ing our individual votes will not make a difference, we are known for not voting.

In the past two or three years, urgency amongst people in general has declined immensely.

People are more focused on the day-to-day rather than how their actions will affect themselves and others in the future. The time of sitting back and not taking initiative is over and this generation has to start stepping up.

The first step to making a difference is being registered to vote, and Montclair State University has made this more convenient than ever.

Residential Education and the corresponding Community Assistants in the residence halls have started a new initiative this year to encourage students to vote.

Being that we have upwards of 4,500 students living on campus, MSU has made it very convenient to vote right here on campus.

The university has been registering students on campus using their dorm/apartment addresses so that students will be able to vote using

the polling stations planned to come on campus—in Machuga Heights, Dinallo Heights, Russ Hall and Sinatra Hall.

This initiative is not only a groundbreaking feat for the university, but also very beneficial to students who live hours away.

Instead of going all the way home just to vote and risk potentially missing classes or wasting valuable study time, we can go to one of the nearest residence halls and cast our respective votes.

It is the perfect way to keep students involved and make them more likely to participate in the voting process, which is quickly approaching.

Students have until Oct. 6th to turn in their voter registration forms to Residential Education or their CAs. After that, the forms will be mailed off and students will receive their sample ballot in the mail that states which polling station they will be voting at.

Those of us who are 18 and older, it is imperative that we make this election count. If everybody walks

around complaining but does nothing to contribute to a solution, then we will continue to lack control over what happens in our country. At some point, it will be our responsibility to make decisions and lead the country, we really are the future.

Hopefully, this new voting initiative by MSU will start political conversations amongst students and maybe even spread to other universities and cause them to follow suit.

With the convenience of the polling locations and Res. Ed helping every step of the way, there is no real excuse as to why anyone should not be voting on Nov. 6th.

If you have personal reasons as to why you are not interested in voting, that is understandable, but if you have no real reason and are just being lazy, you cannot complain when things do not go your way.

Time is running out to register so stop procrastinating and get it done, and on Nov. 6th, make sure you get out there and vote!

Legal Issues with Bodily Tissues What really happens to what you leave behind at the doctor’s

n Wednesday night Montclair hosted a wonderful event in which Sonny and David Lacks, son Kristen Bryfogle and grandAssistant opinion son of editor recently famed Henrietta Lacks, addressed the student body. They spoke about the book, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” their family (especially Henrietta, the woman from whom the first immortal cell line was extracted), health care in America and the very interesting and controversial topic of tissue ownership and consent.

For those who haven’t read the book, the cell line, HeLa—extracted from Henrietta Lacks’ cancerous cervical cells—has thrived and multiplied to the point where it is still living today, though Henrietta died in

1951. Since then, HeLa cells have been used for many scientific advances, including the polio vaccine, and ongoing research for diseases like cancer and AIDS. But Henrietta’s family did not know about her cells’ immortality— now famous among biologists and American households alike—until the 1970s, because no one had thought to inform them.

Henrietta signed an operation permit before the cells were extracted.

Johns Hopkins Hospital claimed that they had the right to use her tissues for research without obligation to inform her family or compensate them with a portion of the millions of dollars made from selling her cells.

Today, tissue ownership is a debate still heavily discussed among scientists and patients.

Doctors can take tissue samples from a patient—as casual as a blood sample—and sell the tissues without the patient receiving any of the money or possibly even knowing about his or her tissue’s use in research.

In a country which borrows from the idea of John Locke’s “pursuit

of property,” is it right to say that citizens should own their own bodily tissues and fluids?

Many argue that citizens have a right to any profit made from a tissue taken from their body. If men and women have a right to copyright abstract ideas from their own minds, then how can actual, tangible, usable tissues not have the same copyright?

Those who oppose tissue ownership rights argue that if someone voluntarily allows a tissue or sample to be extracted from his or her body, then the autonomous decision to part the tissue from the body is enough to disband any sense of ownership.

Thus, those who have tissues extracted do not need consent, because they have already consented to have the tissue removed in the first place.

There has not been a major case as to whether patients should have ownership of their tissues, or at least if they should have the right to consent to their tissue’s use in research.

After all, society at large recognizes organ donation as a vastly important and personal decision which requires consent.

Concerning Editorials and Columns

Doesn’t the decision of allowing one’s tissues to be used for research require a similar form of consent?

If patients were asked to sign a consent form with every doctor’s visit, in order to permit any extracted tissues to be used in scientific research, much about medical practice would change.

Setting up a universal, efficient system for consent would present an initial difficulty, and many suspect that scientific progress would slow due to extended processing associated with the addition of consent forms.

Additionally, the medical field could expect to lose many viable samples due to patient resistance.

The United States has prided itself on its declarations of freedom since its birth as a nation—that each person deserves to make his or her own choices.

Should these choices include tissue ownership and consent to scientific research? The verdict is still out.

Silent Italian cinema in honor of Italian heritage month Emilia D’Albero Staff Writer

Amerigo Vespucci, after whom our continent was allegedly named, died 500 years ago. To celebrate this anniversary and discuss the topic of cultural origins, many events are being organized as part of the Italian Heritage and Culture Month.

On Thursday, Sept. 27th, students, faculty, family members and even New Jersey elected officials came together in Leshowitz Recital Hall for a unique event organized by the Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian-American Studies in collaboration with the John J. Cali School of Music and the Coccia Institute for the Italian Experience in America.

The event, “The Migrant Transatlantic Voyage in Italian Early Silent Films,” was a perfect combination of history, film and live music, and left everyone in the audience with an expanded knowledge of early Italian silent film.

Professor Teresa Fiore, who holds the Inserra Endowed Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies at Montclair State, led Thursday’s fantastic event.

Fiore shared a speech about her experience with planning the event.

This included tracking down a copy of Umberto Paradisi’s 1916 film adaptation of Edmondo De Amicis’ 1886 short story “Dagli Appennini alle Ande,” retrieving it from the prestigious Cineteca di Bologna in Italy. American subtitles substituted for the Italian spawned from a collaboration with Prof. Galoppe and Prof. Marisa Trubiano (Department of Spanish and Italian).

Foire also chose musicians Chris Opperman and Marco Cappelli to compose an original score to play live at the event. Professor Jacqueline Reich of Stony Brook University discussed the portrayal of the migrant transatlantic voyage in Italian cinema.

All of these elements came together to bring the Montclair community a culturally enriching experience that was enjoyed by all the participants.

Beginning with a lecture, Professor Jacqueline Reich provided the audience with some information on early Italian cinema and its development.

She began by showing two short video clips, one from the popular film The Godfather: Part II and

one from the lesser known Nuovomondo, an Italian film which translates out to Golden Door.

This set the tone for the night, helping to illustrate one of Professor Reich’s main points, which was that the emigrant voyage should be looked at from a transatlantic perspective instead of from the perspective of one country.

She then went on to describe the origins of Italian silent films, which were community-oriented events; with the films being shown in vaudeville houses, fairgrounds, and even churches, with live improvised music accompanying the film. Understanding the beginnings of such a historic and time-tested activity

helped to create a sense of authenticity. As the lights went down and the musicians began to play, it seemed as if the audience was transported back in time to a vaudeville house in Italy to watch this classic film.

The night ended with resounding applause from every attendee and a Q&A with the musicians and professors. MSU student Jaime Pisauro shared, “The music played throughout the performance was absolutely phenomenal…Being able to watch such talented people help convey a message to viewers is something I was truly happy to be a part of.”

Whether you’re at the gym, travelling in a car, at a music festival or simply doing homework, the indescribable feeling you get as an electronic song climaxes, and the bass drops, will have your heart racing. Electronic fans all over the world come together to experience pure ecstasy watching their favorite artists perform.

Electronic music has become extremely popular worldwide, ranging from disco music, house music, techno, dubstep and trance. This past May, Electric Daisy Carnival came to the east coast for the first time.

The festival originally began in Las Vegas, circling the globe to Puerto Rico, Florida, Nevada, Colorado, Texas and finally in 2012, it reached New York. Uniting thousands of fans from all over the world to experience the greatest music high of all time, the festival had four stages, 80 artists performing and had multiple rides.

To end the night, there were live fireworks, which added to the electric vibe.

The three day, 12-hour festival was filled with diversity and pure bliss. The amount of preparation each artist put into their set was apparent. To end Summer 2012 with an electric bang, Electric Zoo took place on Randall’s Island in New York.

The music festival had over 90,000 fans raving all day and all night. The east coast EDM lovers experienced one of the greatest summers by far.

Though they are well known, there are many aspiring EDM artists that are becoming well known.

Recent news that Sweedish House Mafia, a trio of Swedish EDM artists, Axwell Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso will be separating has been devastating for many fans.

This was a major turn of events for fans.

Lupe Fiasco: Food & Liquor II; The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1

Mumford & Sons: Babel

Although Fiasco’s latest album is full of societal criticisms and political judgements, many of his fans have been waiting for something fresh since his previous release in early March 2011 titled “Lasers.”

For some fans, this album may signify his comeback from a rather weak performance on “Lasers,” but for others it may mean the end of his musical career (if you believe what he says on his Twitter account).

Nonetheless, Fiasco produces 16 tracks on this album and does so with extreme emotion and honest lyrics.

Listeners may not be able to compare this album to the first, “Food & Liquor” but part two produces enough talent and sing-along tunes to earn a three-star rating from Rolling Stone.

Three years ago, Mumford & Sons stunned listeners with their debut album “Sigh No More,” which went double platinum and skyrocketed to success. In this sophomore LP, fans will not be disappointed, instead, they’ll be pleased to hear a smoother, more refined band even better than the first time people heard them.

The band is more confident in their playing style and keep true to the qualities that made them successful their first time around.

Billboard.com describes the album as “...not the wheel reinvented; it’s the wheel in HD.” Mumord’s originality and modern folk-rock savviness gave this new release the #1 spot on iTunes’ top albums list and will surely charm fans and first time listeners alike.

As Muse’s sixth studio release “The 2nd Law” is the perfect combination of sounds on one album.

Green Day: ¡Uno!

In Green Day’s latest release, the band returns to their roots of good old traditional punk-rock and holds back on the political agenda they’ve mopped along their past few albums. “¡Uno!” is refreshing and touches on the topics that rock was born from: love, sex and old school rock and roll.

The album may not be as serious and hard-hitting as some of Green Day’s previous albums, but it does succeed in transporting the listener back to a younger Green Day whose classic sound still remains cool and fun.

Rock for Charity!

Highlights from Global Citizen Festival 2012 In between each memorable set, a different charity or pillar of the overall cause was represented. One such charity movement that held a presence at the festival was the Half the Sky Movement, specifically targeted at ending oppression of women and girls worldwide.

Actress Olivia Wilde, an advocator and a part of the Half the Sky Movement not only spoke in earnest about the importance of keeping our women safe and educated, but in contributing to the cause.

Partnered with the movement is New Life Foundation, based in Kolkata, India, foundress Urmi Basu felt so strongly about equal rights for women, especially those who are not privileged enough to know those rights “The most important tool we have is education: every single girl has to go to school. She has to know her body is hers, not a material that other people can trade in.”

In the red light district and impoverished sections of India, girls are forced into prostitution mainly because they have no other way to make money and support their families. Basu believes that every person, and more specifically every woman, has four basic choices that should never be denied: “education, linking them to job training, independent and safe housing and legal protection” Basu’s mission and the mission of all charities present at the event is to change laws and social norms that allow our current world to live in conditions inhumane and unthinkable. It is unjust and immoral that there are parts of our world that live off of just $1.25 a day, and it was the mission of the show to raise awareness and funding to reverse just that.

Global Citizen Danielle Romano had this to say about the show, and the causes supported there: “Just simply attending the Global Citizen Festival made me feel like I made a difference. Sometimes I feel like it’s difficult to make a difference, but attending the concert made me feel like my voice was really heard. I believe that the way to truly speak to anyone is through music because it is a universal and unifying thing. The festival encouraged me to get involved and help end global poverty and I’m proud to say that by attending, I’ve taken the first steps to do so.”

Charity, in any form, is one of those parts of life that are humbling and inspiring, giving even the smallest person a chance at making a huge difference. Taking part in a charity benefit concert targeted at ending global poverty now that can be almost awe inspiring.

On Sept. 29, over 60,000 people gathered on Central Park’s Great Lawn to raise awareness to one of the largest overlooked crises our world is going through.

To partake in this once in a lifetime opportunity, eager and enthusiastic world-changers and band enthusiasts logged on to globalcitizen.org to sign petitions, read articles, and ultimately earn points to be entered into a lottery drawing.

Global Festival 2012 featured bands K’naan, Band of Horses, the Black Keys, the Foo Fighters, and Neil Young featuring Crazy Horse all playing for change.

Each band volunteered their time and their charity to the venue in conjunction with multiple celebrities – including Olivia Wilde and Katie Couric – and charity organizations to raise awareness about global poverty.

As far as the concert aspect goes, no band disappointed any set of fans, both new and old.

Opening the event was artist K’naan, a native of Somalia who brought a tribal-rock mix to the event, humbling the crowd and bringing them back to exactly why they were there. Reconnecting with his most famous song “Wavin’ Flag,” K’naan appropriately closed his powerful but short set with the message that “It can be bleak. Accept no defeat, surrender, retreat.”

With the crowd vibrant and filled with a new batch of hope and initiative, Band of Horses was well received for their four song set. Though a dose of melancholy sadness was induced in

their singing of “Funeral,” reminders of the causes we were there to support and the reason the show was going on in the first place kept spirits alive nonetheless.

Headliners Black Keys and Foo Fighters were obviously received by each and every member of the crowd belting along to their favorite song. The Black Keys plowed through a set containing 14 songs including the crowd pleasers “Howlin’ for You,” “Little Black Submarines,” “Gold on the Ceiling” and “Lonely Boy.” Guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney had no problem at all keeping their energy alive and the crowd more than pleased.

Veteran of the stage Dave Grohl, front man of the Foo Fighters, opened the set with the all appropriate “Times Like These,” giving a nod to the causes, but also to the band themselves. Though his statement has been interpreted more than a presidential debate, its safe to say the Foo Fighters are merely taking a break, not breaking up.

Never failing to connect with the crowd, and both their loyal and newer fans, the mix of songs such as “Wasting Lights,” “Arlandria” and “Walk” with the classic “Best of You” and “My Hero” made the Foo

Fighters steal the show. As attendee Nick Verhagen said, “I’ve never felt more manly screaming like a teenage girl when the Foo Fighters were on.

The entire experience (the concert, the crowd, the city) is something I will never forget.” Closing their set 50 minute set with “Everlong,” the crowd was brought to new heights.

Ending the night was Neil Young featuring Crazy Horse. An icon to every generation represented at the concert, the five hour concert concluded with members of each act joining Young for “Keep on Rockin in the Free World.”

Red Hawks Soar Past Opposition Women’s soccer in second place with 4-0 NJAC record Matt Pollock Staff Writer

The MSU women’s soccer team continued their dominant season by improving to 10-0-1 and a perfect 5-0 on the road this past Saturday with a 3-0 win over Rutgers-Camden.

The Red Hawks, who have won eight straight games, now have an impressive 4-0 record in the NJAC with the victory, while RutgersCamden dropped to 2-8-1, 0-4-1 in the league. Montclair State is now number 18 in national polls and now owns a 14-0-1 record in its all-time series against the Scarlet Raptors.

Sophomore forward Francesca Gibson got the scoring started with her team leading ninth goal, coming early off a cross from the right side by junior midfielder Jessica Kiniery in the 3rd minute. That goal also contributed to Gibson’s fourth game winner. Gibson also added to her game-winning performance with an

assist on a goal late in the second half.

Freshman Stefanie Gomes provided some insurance to their lead with two late goals. Gomes headed in a cross by Gibson in the 79th minute for her seventh goal of the year. She added her second goal and eighth in total with under a minute remaining after sophomore back Jessica Bonjione chipped a ball into the box near the goal line for an assist.

MSU looked dominant outshooting Rutgers-Camden 32-1. Despite an 11-1 advantage in shots in the opening half and a 4-0 lead in corner kicks, the game remained just 1-0 at the break. Rutgers-Camden junior goalkeeper Leighanna Milby finished with a school-record 17 saves, showing that MSU’s offense threatened early, and threatened often.

Their defense looked to be dominant and in sync, as Rutgers-Camden only managed to record one total shot. Sophomore goalkeeper Gina Policastro did not have to make a save, earning her seventh shutout.

The Red Hawks still have a chance at winning the NJAC as long as they keep winning their conference games. They have their work cut out for them with the Rowan Professors as their next opponent. ing in the half to make the score 20-0 at halftime. The Red Hawk defense held strong in the second half, but 20 points would prove to be enough for the Red Dragons, as they would hold on for the win.

The Red Hawks were held to just 190 yards of total offense. Junior running back A.J. Scoppa, last weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s NJAC Offensive Player of the Week, ran for

47 yards on seven carries before leaving the game early due to an injury.

Senior quarterback Drew Cathey went 19-38, throwing for 155 yards and was sacked four times. Freshman wideout Rashad White was the leading receiver for the Red Hawks, making four receptions for 58 yards.

Sophomore defensive back Bill Shimko and junior linebacker Adnan Sakiri led the defensive effort with 14 and 11 tackles respectively.

The Montclair State Red Hawks football team suffered its first conference loss of the season on the road against the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons. The Red Hawks were held to just 190 yards of total offense as they were shutout for the first time since 1998. The loss resulted in the Red Hawks falling to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the NJAC. After forcing the Red Hawks to go three-and-out on the opening drive, the Red Dragons drove down to the Montclair State 7-yard line before settling for a field goal to take an early 3-0 lead. On the ensuing possession, the Red Hawks drove 68 yards down to the Cortland 7-yard line. Unfortunately, a missed 24-yard field goal attempt kept that zero on the scoreboard.

The defense forced a fumble on the following Cortland possession, but the offense was unable to capitalize on the good field position, and was forced to punt after a three-andout. The Red Dragons took possession on their own 14, and drove 86 yards down the field on a 10-play touchdown drive that concluded with a 1-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Chris Rose to senior tight end Sean Obanhein. The first quarter ended with the Red Dragons leading by a score of 10-0.

Cortland extended their lead early in the second quarter with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Rose to sophomore wide receiver Kordel McInnis to cap a two-play, 66-yard drive.

Volleyball Continues Strong Run Rich Efrus Staff Writer

Last weekend, the Montclair State Women’s Volleyball team played in three matches.

On Thursday night, the MSU Red Hawks travelled to Galloway Township and saw their two-match winning streak snapped by Richard Stockton College in an NJAC match.

MSU fell in straight sets with the scores being 25-13, 25-21, and 25-15.

They are now 1-3 in NJAC matches.

The Ospreys were in control for much of the match behind the strong play from key players Kasey Hennecke and Nicole Serekian. Serekian registered three kills and Hennecke with four to help Stockton win the first set 25-13.

In the second set, the Red Hawks picked up their play, and behind the play of Marta Topor and Daniella Salemo, MSU had a comfortable 19-13 lead. However, their lead was shortlived. After a Stockton timeout, the Ospreys came together and rallied back with a 12-2 run resulting in a second set win by a final score of 2521. In the third set, which would wind up being the final set of the match, Richard Stockton built on their second set rally and came out to win the set and match with a 25-15 win.

The Richard Stockton Ospreys improved to an 11-4 overall record with the win and a 4-0 NJAC record.

Serekian had a match-high 14 kills in the final set and led all players with 10 digs in the match. Mayan Alvarado also contributed 19 assists. For the Red Hawks, Topor led the squad with eight kills and Angela Campo continued solid play with 19 assists, which was tied for match-high honors.

After suffering a tough loss at Richard Stockton, the Red Hawks made the trip back home for two matches against Mount St. Mary and King’s College in a home tri-match.

The Red Hawks would win both matches to improve to a 17-5 overall record. The team showed their ability to come back even after the tough loss they suffered against the Ospreys.

In the match against Mount St. Mary, the Red Hawks came out looking to avoid consecutive losses. With a 19-3 advantage in the first set, the

Red Hawks showed confidence and would go on to win the set 2514 and gain a 1-0 advantage in the match. The second set saw a different script where the Red Hawks found themselves down 13-7 before they bounced back on a 12-4 run and took a 19-17 lead in the set.

The Blue Knights kept fighting to win the set, but in the end it would be the Red Hawks who came out on top with the 25-22 victory. The decisive third set was almost a mirror image of the first two sets, with MSU controlling play and never really giving the Blue Knights much of a chance. They won the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.

The Red Hawks finished their day against King’s College. King’s College came into the match as the underdogs with a 3-13 record but the Red Hawks knew better than to take them lightly. The Red Hawks came out with the same fire and intensity that they have shown all season long and they were resilient on King’s College.

In the first set of the match against King’s College, the Red Hawks had a 13-10 advantage. They never looked back, as they went on to score five of the next seven points to take an 18-12 lead in the set.

Nicole Wojtowicz and Daniella Salemo both added kills to extend the lead to a score of 23-17 in favor of MSU. Kimberly Butrico served up an ace followed by a kill from Dana Mcnish to close out the set by a final score of 25-18. In the second set, the Red Hawks almost let up and saw their 1-0 advantage in the match slip away, but they battled on and came out with the 26-24 win over the Lady Monarchs.

The score was tied 24-24, but a service error and attack error from King’s College gave MSU the set and the 2-0 lead in the match. Junior Sara Girgus and fellow outside hitter Daniella Salemo combined for 11 of Montclair’s 15 kills in the final set, which they won 25-21 for a second straight sweep.

Salemo had seven kills and 13 digs for MSU in the win over King’s College. Angela Campo registered 34 assists and Kaitlyn Irwin led the team with 15 digs. Sara Girgus had 10 kills in the match.

The Red Hawks, now 17-5 overall, are back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 2 as they play host to Baruch College. The match is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start time as they look to improve to 18-5 on the season.

Bosland Leads Red Hawks to 3-0 Mike Panepinto Staff Writer

This past week, the Montclair State Women’s Field Hockey team pushed their winning streak to eight games by taking care of business against Susquehanna University and SUNY Cortland.

The Lady Red Hawks are now ranked number 10 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll. MSU Field Hockey’s overall record is 10-1 and inside the New Jersey Athletic Conference, the Lady Red Hawks are a perfect 3-0.

On Wednesday, Sept. 26th, the MSU Field Hockey squad played host to Susquehanna University.

The Lady Red Hawks dominated from start to finish and won 5-0 over the Lady Crusaders. Senior midfielder Frances Schafer put in the only goal of the tightly contested first half at the 11:44 mark.

When the second half opened, the Lady Red Hawks put the pedal to the metal scoring four more goals.

Frances Schafer knocked in MSU’s second goal of the game just three minutes into the half to put the Lady Red Hawks up 2-0.

Freshman forward Maura Johnston found the back of the net at the 61:27 mark to put MSU up 3-0. Junior midfielder Jennifer Tafro netted a goal with roughly six minutes to go to make the score 4-0 for the Lady Red Hawks. Montclair State’s last goal came from sophomore midfielder Emily Burd at the 66-minute mark in the game for a final score of 5-0.

Jennifer Tafro assisted on two goals and Frances Schafer had one as-

sist. Senior goalkeeper Kate Bosland made three saves and recorded her fourth shutout of the season. Bosland has 54 career wins and is number four all-time for most career shutouts.

On Saturday, Sept. 29th at noon, the MSU women’s field hockey Team made the trip up to Cortland, New York to take on SUNY Cortland. Both teams pulled out all the stops, but the Lady Red Hawks squeaked out a gritty, nail-biting 1-0 victory over the Lady Red Dragons.

The first half was a defensive struggle, and after the smoke cleared, the score was deadlocked at 0-0. The battle for supremacy continued into the second half until Montclair State junior forward/midfielder Brooke Hullings scored the game-winning goal with 18:31 remaining in the contest to give MSU a 1-0 victory. Senior goalkeeper Kate Bosland notched six saves in the game and recorded the fifteenth shutout of her career.

Bosland also tied Trisha Winkle for most victories by a goalkeeper in MSU history, en route to securing her 55th career win.

Kate Bosland, the senior goalkeeper of the Lady Red Hawks, won her second straight NJAC Defensive Player of the Week Honors. Bosland recorded nine saves this week and currently leads the NJAC in shutouts with five. She is also ranked second in goals against average (0.75) and fifth in saves (45).

This upcoming week, the MSU Women’s Field Hockey team travels to Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ on Wednesday, Oct. 3rd to face off with the Lady Ducks at 8:00 p.m. This Saturday, Oct. 6th, the Lady Red Hawks take a trip down south to Ewing, NJ to take on the TCNJ Lady Lions at 7:00 p.m.

Lucas Terci Midfielder — Soccer Terci played a huge role in the Red Hawks, improving their record to 11-1, thanks to his two goals and three assists in their three games last week. His highlight goal came 21 seconds into overtime when he scored the winning goal against Rutgers-Camden.

Megan Bosland Goalkeeper — Field Hockey Bosland tied the school record for wins as she helped lead the Red Hawks to two victories last week for their current 10-1 record. Bosland was named NJAC Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week, recording two shutouts and nine saves last week.

NFL Quarterly Rankings Corey Aron Staff Writer

Believe it or not, we’re already a quarter into the NFL season. Now that the original referees are finally back officiating games, we can solely focus on football. That being said, let’s take a look at whether or not each team is performing up to expectations.

32.) Cleveland Browns (0-4): They actually gave the Ravens a run for their money in last Thursday night’s game in Baltimore. Rookie running back Trent Richardson looks like he’s going to be a special running back in this league for years to come. The only other thing this team can look forward to is that their best corner back Joe Haden will be completing his four game suspension this week due to violating the NFL’s drug policy.

31.) Oakland Raiders (1-3): Since 2006, the Raiders have had five different head coaches. The franchise has been unstable for some time now.

Their rowdy fan base is the only thing that has stayed loyal to their team.

30.) Tennessee Titans (1-3): The Titans have the league’s worst scoring differential by being outscored by 70 points in their first four games.

Quarterback Jake Locker hasn’t lived up to his 1st round selection in 2011, and RB Chris Johnson had only 45 rushing yards in his first three games. He finally woke up on Sunday, by producing 141 yards against a tough Texans defense.

29.) Miami Dolphins (1-3): They nearly pulled off the upset out in Arizona this past week, and so far this year’s HBO Hard Knocks team has given their all under new head coach Joe Philbin. Rookie QB Ryan Tannehill is showing he can potentially lead this squad to wins, but they have to learn how to finish their games.

28.) Jacksonville Jaguars (1-3): QB Blaine Gabbert looks to be a little more comfortable in his second season, but it still isn’t enough to rejuvenate this franchise. Rookie wide receiver Justin Blackmon has yet to live up to his hype, but at least star RB Maurice Jones-Drew ended his holdout to play this season.

27.) New York Jets (2-2): While their record isn’t awful, their morale has hit rock bottom, especially after getting shutout at home this past Sunday against the 49ers, 34-0. Hands down, the NFL’s best CB Darrelle Revis is out for the year with a torn ACL. Their best WR Santonio Holmes is speculated to be out for a while, which leaves absolutely zero play-makers left on the squad. QB controversy has been stirring ever since acquiring Tim Tebow. Head coach Rex Ryan is the ringleader in the middle of this giant circus.

26.) New Orleans (0-4): Despite the scandals during the offseason, nobody pictured the Saints starting off

winless. Their fans shouldn’t put paper bags over their heads just yet, like they did back in the 1970s, but they need to start piling some wins if they want become relevant again this year. At least Drew Brees has been his stellar self. He needs one more game to pass all-time great Johny Unitas in most consecutive games while throwing for a TD.

25.) Kansas City Chiefs (1-3): With a lot of talent on this team, I had much higher expectations for them going into this season. However, RB Jamaal Charles looks to have fully recovered from his ACL tear last season.

However, they will need more effort from both sides of the ball if they want to contend in the AFC West.

17.) Washington Redskins (2-2): Robert Griffin III leads all QBs in fantasy points. He is the real deal, but unfortunately for Washington they lost Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Orakpo for the season. Another interesting story has been 6th round draftee RB Alfred Morris, who got off to a fantastic start.

24.) Indianapolis Colts (1-2): First off, my condolences go out to their first year head coach Chuck Pagano, who has been diagnosed with treatable leukemia. As for this year’s 1st round pick, QB Andrew Luck will make this team into a contender in the future.

23.) Detroit Lions (1-3): After an impressive season last year that put Detroit back on the map, they have gotten off to a dismal start this go around. I blame the Madden video game curse, in which WR Calvin Johnson and QB Matthew Stafford have only hooked up for one TD

18.) Seattle Seahawks (2-2): They paid QB Matt Flynn for almost $9 million a year to have him sit backup to rookie QB Russell Wilson. They have a great defense, and a hard nose RB in Marshawn Lynch, but their loss to St. Louis could be detrimental going forward.

16.) St. Louis Rams (2-2): Head coach Jeff Fisher is starting to bring in a winning atmosphere back in St. Louis. Their addition in signing CB Cortland Finnegan has also paid off very well by giving them a much tougher secondary to face.

15.) Denver Broncos (2-2): Peyton Manning is looking very sharp so far this season. If he and the team start getting comfortable as a unit, they could be one of the best teams in the AFC. 14.) Pittsburgh Steelers (1-2): They had a bye week at the perfect time.

10.) Chicago Bears (3-1): The Bears have one of the best defenses in the NFL. If Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall can keep in sync with each other, this team could make a serious run into the playoffs.

9.) Cincinnati Bengals (3-1): WR AJ Green has gotten off to as good of a start that one could imagine in their first 20 games in the NFL. QB Andy Dalton has also transitioned extremely well into the NFL. Head coach Marvin Lewis has actually had the third longest active coaching tenure in the league.

8.) Philadelphia Eagles (3-1): The Eagles still haven’t seamed it all together with such a talented squad on paper.

They’ve definitely been lucky, but their last performance against the Giants was by far their most dominant.

7.) Green Bay Packers (2-2): They probably should be 3-1, due to the botched call that took place in Seattle.

Aaron Rodgers is getting back into his own and that could be scary for the rest of the league.

6.) New England Patriots (2-2): Their defense could be more consistent, but this team has an offensive squad that can easily lead them to another division title.

5.) Arizona Cardinals (4-0): They are easily the biggest surprise in the NFL this year. They had QB controversy going into the season with Kevin Kolb and John Skelton, but its been their defense that’s taken the league by storm.

22.) Carolina Panthers (1-3): They look like their in rebuilding mode.

After one of the finest rookie campaigns last season, the expectations for QB Cam Newton and this team is through the roof.

21.) Buffalo Bills (2-2): At one point, they were up 21-7 against New England on Sunday. They ended up giving up 52 points while Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 4 interceptions. I will say that if both RBs Fred Jackson and CJ Spiller are healthy, they have one of the best RB tandems in the league.

20.) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-3): They’ve played very hard for former Rutgers head coach Mike Schiano, but they’ve fallen short on their three losses. The team has a bright future, however, they do play in one of the most competitive divisions in the NFL. 19.) Dallas Cowboys (2-2): QB Tony Romo threw for 5 interceptions during Monday night’s game against the Bears. If they play the way they did in

Troy Polamalu an extra week to get healthy again. With these two back and RB Rashard Mendenhall, Pittsburgh could easily climb up the power rankings within a couple of weeks.

13.) Minnesota Vikings (3-1): A head scratcher in last year’s draft was the first round selection of QB Christian Ponder. This guy seems to have all the makings of becoming an efficient QB in this league. Another positive is RB Adrian Peterson who is getting back up to speed from a remarkably quick ACL recovery due to last season.

12.) New York Giants (2-2): Sunday night’s game was an absolute heartbreaker. The Giants haven’t started 0-2 in the NFC East since 1996, so they can’t afford to lose many more to their division rivals because their schedule gets ridiculously more difficult down the road.

11.) San Diego Chargers (3-1): The Chargers’ wins have come off of mediocre teams of the past. The good news is that RB Ryan Mathews has returned from injury, but they need to prove that they can beat the elite teams in the

2.) San Francisco 49ers (3-1): Their loss in Minnesota took them by surprise, but this might be the most complete team in the NFL. Head Coach Jim Harbaugh has made this team believe in themselves and it’s completely changed the way this team plays, considering how bad they were two seasons ago.

1.) Houston Texans (4-0): Sorry Dallas, but Houston is not only the best team in the state of Texas, but also the NFL. Anything short in making it to the AFC Championship will make this year disappointing, pending on if their key players stay healthy.

There we have it, folks. It will be interesting to see which teams can bounce back from a slow start and which fall behind due to starts that are too good to be true.
