Recently, Montclair State University Professor John G. Stevens, 69, was served with a court summons for disorderly conduct. Stevens is an applied mathematics professor who teaches, “Contemporary Applied Math For Everyone.”

Stevens was in his office in Richardson Hall when he received the summons.

After reaching out to the professor about this incident there was no response on his part.

However, Lieutenant Kieran Barrett was able to give us some information about the incident.

“Mr. Stevens was then charged with disorderly conduct stemming from a police investigation which is not handled through physical arrest, rather it is a summons served upon him,” he stated.

Lieutenant Barrett assured that although the police department is not in charge of determining whether the professor will be returning to campus, the incident was handled as it would be with any other violator of the law.

Students aware of this situation have differing opinions on how this will reflect on the university.

An Afternoon with One Great Guy Catherine Baxter News Editor

As soon as Guy Fieri on Campus opened, it was clear that it was a hit on campus. Many students expressed their love for the loaded macaroni and cheese or Guy's Big Bite Burger. The only thing missing was students getting to see Fieri himself, aside from the cardboard cutouts of him all around campus.

On Wednesday, Dec. 5, Fieri visited the Monclair State campus to spend his day grilling up burgers, taking pictures and having a quick interview with The Montclarion.

Fieri gives students insight into Guy Fieri on Campus and his personal cooking career: What is your favorite thing on your Guy Fieri on Campus menu? Why? "Oh geez! I think it's gotta be the Guy's Big Bite Burger. It's not the most difficult thing to make, unlike other things on the menu.

I was just overall excited when I first made the burger. I mean, the chili's good, the Cuban sandwich and parmesan chicken...

It's like what happens when someone asks you what your favorite song is! I'd still say it's the

burger, though. Burgers are just so mishandled. People think they can just take a chunk of meat and add some lettuce and cheese and there you go. I like the Big Bite Burger because it is just the right combination of everything, right down to how thinly we slice the lettuce."

What made you decide to start a Guy Fieri on Campus chain?

"Well, I partnered up with the folks at Sodexo, and we started talking about it. I went to college, and I was not a fan of the college food that I had. I was thinking, 'What can we give them?' You're eating at these places at least a couple days a week, and we tried to figure out what it was that you guys wanted. Everything was pre-made when I went to school.

It came frozen and pre-packaged. I had a concept with good food and affordable prices where everything was hand-made."

What is your biggest goal to achieve for Guy Fieri on Campus?

"Well, the underlying factor of the whole thing is that a lot of these students are my fan-base.

The respect and relationship with them is what really matters. At the end of the day, it's the people that look to you and the people who respect what you do that should be taken care of.

I just want to see the smile on their faces. Food is a comfort zone, and I want to help make that comfort zone for people. It's a responsibility I have."

I saw that you attended an exchange program in France.

What did you learn while there?

"France was probably the biggest impact on my life. What it really was about was the origination of food, what food really is. Food is the common denominator of all people. Everybody likes food. When I was in France, I ate foods that were simple but amazing. Bread and cheese were so much more appreciated. You enjoy each part of your meals. It was an enlightenment that I had when I was in France."

Your donkey sauce is delicious, and of course has an interesting name. What's the story behind the donkey sauce (sauce on Guy's Big Bite Burgers)?

"I think I'm funny. But really, that concept of 'I can have it my way' is not something I want to do. I'm going to make it my way.

When you go to a Metallica concert, you don't say 'I'd like it with a little less guitar and no drums.' get everybody together.

Would you encourage students to study abroad?

"Take the time! You're at the perfect age in college. Take at least a semester and go study abroad.

One, you're going to have a great time. Two, you're going to experience a new culture. You're going to learn and see how big the world really is. I wish I would have taken more time and traveled more before I got out of college. If I could do it over again, I would take another year of school and study in Asia and France."

As a chef and restaurant owner, I'm sure you've received negative feedback during your career. How do you handle negative feedback? Do you have any advice for students who may also receive negative feedback throughout their lives?

"Evaluate the feedback. Don't ignore it; evaluate the legitimacy of it. Is it just a hater saying something mean to you? Don't even tune that in. If it's coming from someone you respect, get over the anger and disappointment of it. Look at the feedback objectively and take what you can from it and learn."

What is the most memorable place that you visited on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives?

"I've been to over 650 locations.

When you're in that moment of 'this is awesome,' that's what it's all about. They all had amazing people and great food, and I can't choose just one. I can't even choose one region of the country.

Chicago is probably one of my favorite places to go, but I travel a lot. It's impossible to say."

What is the first thing you noticed when you arrived on campus today?

"It's enormous! If it wasn't for the maintenance guys, I would be lost. You need those huge maps like Disneyland!"

Sodexo Puts Rumors to Rest Dining employees as quality as our food Jack Smith IV Staff Writer

It’s been a long established rumor at Montclair State University that Sodexo, the food and facilities management company that hires the dining services on campus, is hiring convicted felons. This rumor is, however, definitely false.

“Every employee has to go through a background check,” says Jim Robinson, who is the Coordinator of Dining Services for Montclair. “The New Jersey law says that based on the offense, you cannot be a part of the school system, and based on a background check, won’t be hired.”

Robinson has worked in management of food services companies similar to Sodexo. “As a GM in my previous accounts, we’d hire hundreds of people.”

Background checks, however, aren’t immediate affairs, and potential hires can provide false information. Paperwork is filled out, interviews are conducted

and new employees are brought to work.

Meanwhile, the background check can take months to reveal that an employee has submitted fraudulent information as part of their initial application.

But what happens to employees who may have lied in their paperwork? “They are terminated immediately,” said Robinson.

It’s difficult to trace the origins of the myth that Sodexo hires felons for its food and facilities staff. The New Jersey State Parole Board provides work programs for employers that offer close supervision and substantial tax credits, though Sodexo has no history at Montclair with such programs. Still, there are even Montclair alumni who can recall the rumor as matter-offact.

“Sodexo: A Great Place to Work," boasts a company slogan on their website. Sodexo is a monolithically large facilities company, employing over 400,000 people in 80 countries.

On this campus, they’re primarily responsible with managing Montclair’s residential dining, as well as maintaining the partnership that brings thirdparty dining retailers on campus.

Most of the hiring is workers who commute to Montclair, but occasionally Sodexo will hire students to supplement their staff. Meredith Gaito, a student in the film program at Montclair, works at Sam’s Place as part of their maintenance team. “The other workers are great,” Meredith said, “and I’ve never experienced anything at work that would make me think badly of the employees.”

Some students, residents particularly, hold individuals from the food service staff close to their hearts as members of the everyday campus community. A few had colorful words for the rumor, which they saw as tinged in prejudice, or at the very least, slanderous.

The line poured out of the doors as students eagerly awaited finally purchasing Dunkin’ on campus.

Dunkin’ Donuts is serving their entire menu from 7 a.m. to midnight daily. This is later than the other two food stations in Blanton Hall, and one of the latest open dining services on campus.

Students are extremely happy with the late-night hours.

"It's great that Dunkin' opens right before finals and stays open so late. I'll need it,” said junior Asia Huey. “I live in Blanton Hall so it's convenient for me to go downstairs and get coffee before class.”

The Dunkin’ Donuts is set up like a typical store, with two lines to serve the expected influx of students rather than just one.

On opening day, the lines went well out the door, proving an instant hit with students.

Known for their inexpensive coffee and breakfast sandwiches, Dunkin’ Donuts is a college student's dream.

Senior Lizeth Torres believes it is the "greatest idea dining services ever had. This makes me wish I was a freshman again."

which offers a sub and a drink for one swipe, students can use Flex, Red Hawk Dollars, cash and credit cards.

The new Dunkin’ Donuts draws many people onto the main campus including those who live in Hawk Crossings, The Village, Sinatra Hall and commuters.

Sophomore Stephanie Lopez of Hawk Crossings said it’s “worth the walk.”

Some students heard rumors of construction issues, which led to the late arrival of the franchise.

Andrew Pignataro of Dining Services explained that SubConnection opened on Oct. 15 and Guy Fieri on Campus opened on Nov. 5 because construction was scheduled differently for each project so that they did not overlap each other.

Sodexo employees work at this particular Dunkin’ Donuts as opposed to local Dunkin’ Donuts employees because local, privately owned franchises employ the latter group.

When asked about future dining services plans, Pignataro commented, "Nothing on the immediate horizon, just to focus on the food and service at our current locations."

With all these new choices, it is certain that Red Hawks will always have full stomachs.

“It is almost unbelievable that something like that could happen to a professor, let alone on campus. It gives a bad image to both the school and to the professors that teach here. It is a shame that this had to happen and will probably not reflect well on MSU's reputation,” he said.

This isn’t the first incident involving a professor that has occurred on this campus. In March, a professor was arrested for physically assaulting another colleague after debating over a heated matter.

Policy on Final Examinations: 1. All final exams must be given during the regularly scheduled exam periods. The schedule of courses list days and times of final exams for each class period.

2. No final exam may be given during the last week of classes before the exam period.

3. If no formal exam is scheduled, the class must meet for one hour during the scheduled final exam time for a class evaluation session. Thus, all classes are required to meet during the exam period.

The interview began with a discussion of the sportscasting camp that Eagle and Beck have been running since 2001. Both agreed that they couldn’t do the camp without each other.

“I feel we are adopted sons of Montclair State. We’ve been here 11 years. It’s great to see how the school has grown,” Eagle began.

“The first year of sharing our stories and experiences was a little frightening. There’s no syllabus.”

Beck said, “We have a connection to Montclair. For me to be back here is awesome. When we began, we didn’t know what to expect, but we were both fathers. I think if you’re a good father, you can be a good teacher.

[The camp] has evolved and it’s been a fun run."

Beck’s mother is an alumni of Montclair, graduating in 1950.

She also donated $25,000 to the amphitheater.

Both Eagle and Beck have been interested in the broadcasting world since they were children. They shared their early childhood stories.

“This is all I ever wanted to do in life," said Eagle. "I said to my father at age eight, ‘I want to be a sportscaster’ and he said to me ‘You got to work on your lisp first then.’"

Beck had a similar story. “I was interested in broadcasting since seven or eight. I began doing impressions of my favorite sportscasters, calling games at summer camps and with my

friends.”

The topic of technology and how it has shaped reporting arose. “[The] introduction of social media has changed the business.

Now there’s so much information out there, it becomes overwhelming, but Bruce and I continue to have the same approach: go beyond the obvious,” said Eagle.

Beck continued, “Twitter becomes a vehicle where information is shared. There’s a plethora of people who want to be in the business.”

They offered words of inspiration and advice to the students in attendance. “It takes passion.

You can do it, even if you’re rejected. It’s not a straight drive to the top,” Beck said.

Eagle related, “I think Bruce and I are cut from a similar cloth…we’re both living the dream. You have to immerse yourself in your dream. Go full tilt, never go with a half-hearted effort.”

After the interview, the floor was open to questions from the students. Topics of cursing on air, how you make it to the top and what it takes to become a major broadcaster emerged.

Beck gave a great motto to live by, encouraging everyone to “follow your opportunities.”

After the discussion, the broadcasters were featured in a special episode of Carpe Diem where again Rosenweig interviewed them. Keep your eyes peeled for the episode with two of New Jersey’s premier broadcasters.

Confliction with Kicks

There is no better way to give off a cool but relaxed look than by sporting a pair of sneakers. Sneakers are great for campus life for students on the go and for all-around comfort.

By the looks of Montclair State’s campus, students are getting in on this laidback trend. However, when I tracked the campus for stylish sneakers I came to a crossroad.

There are many types of casual kicks out there, but the brands most frequently seen on campus are Vans and Converse. I decided to dig in on the confliction of kicks.

Converse is an American shoe company that originated in 1908

by Marquis Mills Converse. However, it wasn’t until 1917 when the Converse All-Star basketball shoe was introduced.

A basketball player by the name of Charles “Chuck” Taylor began promoting the shoes nationally, and in 1932 his signature was added to the All-Star patch on the classic high-top sneaker.

“I think Converse give off more of a punk image. The Ramones wore them, but I think now girls wear them to be edgy,” said Jeff Onorato.

For girls, personally, I like when sneakers are paired with leggings, skinny jeans or even skirts. The sneaker gives off a boyish look to any wardrobe. For guys, I believe it also gives off an edgy vibe.

“I’ve always worn Converses — they’re just comfortable,” said Naraly Vazquez.

In 1966, Paul Van Doren, James Van Doren and three other partners opened up their first store in California that sold what is known now as the “authentic” style of Vans.

Vans became popular through skaters in the early 1970s. They liked the rugged style and sticky sole. Tony Alva and Stacy Perata designed the Vans “95” in 1975, known today as the “Era.” With its padded collar and different color combinations, the Era became the shoe of choice for a generation of skateboarders due to the non-slip bottom being more conducive for a better grip.

“Vans have been more traditionally skater-styled. I almost exclusively wear Vans. I think they have a nice clean look. They are more comfortable,” Onorato continued.

Both trends offer a flat-footed sole and a variety of patterns and colors. I would it find hard to believe that you couldn’t find one to fit your preferences. They are both American manufacturers and have original, classic and authentic styles that they have held onto throughout the years.

In the end, to college students, it all comes down to comfort.

There are a lot of gimmicks out there when it comes to Vans and Converse look-alikes. However, nothing is like these brands when it comes to the styles of casual and edgy.

Campus Rec Hosts Basketball Tournament Levon Syers Staff Writer

Families and friends gathered this past Saturday at the Student Recreation Center to enjoy the tournament hosted by Montclair State University Men’s Club Basketball team, an event that turned out to be a positive experience for those who attended and participated. The tournament featured club teams from both Montclair and Rutgers-Newark who were fierce competitors, particularly during the final game in which Montclair State won (Team A) 56-53. Competition was relentless until the final buzzer, which might not have been the case if the intramural officials from Campus Recreation had not provided the well-regulated atmosphere for such competition to thrive.

Billy Rooney, senior and one of the top players for Montclair during the tournament, commented on the sportsmanship and his overall experience. “[The] Rutgers players were really good sports. Nothing got out of hand because the officials did a really good job.” Rooney scored 20 points during the intense final game against Rutgers’s “A-Squad,” and commented on the most memorable moment of that game, “One of the players from Rutgers shot a three-pointer at the buzzer, which would have tied up the whole game. That was the most memorable moment for me during the whole weekend.” When asked whether or not he would participate in a tournament like this again, Rooney responded, “It was a lot of fun. I would definitely like to do it again, though next time I would love to see more people and teams participate.”

It is important to note that this was the first time Campus Recreation officials were able to call basketball since this past spring. With that being said, the tournament went as smoothly as it possibly could, at least according to senior official Ryan Hardin. Hardin, a senior at Montclair State, explained some of the circumstances and attitudes surrounding the event: “One of the teams didn’t show, so that was a downer for some of the other players, but they still ended up having a great time overall. As an official, there was a little dust to shake off from last season, and we wanted to make sure that there was no bias whatsoever in our calls, which I think we accomplished.” Hardin also commended the work of Rutgers-Newark’s teams. “Rutgers came with a ‘Team A’ and ‘Team B’, though they were without a coach at all. I thought that was impressive because Montclair has a coach, who would manage substitutions for players during the competition.”

During this particularly stressful time of the year, it is always important to maintain some healthy habits in order to manage that stress, which is why Campus Recreation prides themselves on their various events and activities for students. Being a college student is difficult. Students face many challenges such as rising tuition expenses, meeting new people, finding a job and juggling schoolwork with social life. What if students were pushed out of their comfort zone, into a sea of unknown creatures? What would it be like to face the difficulties of a college student in an unfamiliar place, without family, friends, a car or even the often taken for granted comfort of one’s own bed? What would it be like as an international student in America?

The United States brings more international students than any other country in the world. In 2008, the United States was ranked as a top destination for international students. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, international students contribute more than $21 billion to the U.S. economy as record numbers of foreigners enroll in U.S. colleges and universities.

International students face a huge difficulty: the desire to stay. Recently, a bill that proposed to keep a number of illegal science and math graduates from American universities failed to get the vote at the House of Representatives. The bill would have eliminated an annual lottery and in return distribute 55,000 visas to master or doctoral graduates of the STEM field: math, science, engineering or technology. Now there is another proposal, a little less broad in what the graduate retains, which will give new green cards to highly skilled foreigners.

For Thaimur Khalid, a 22 year-old business finance and economics major from Pakistan, the bill did not inhibit his plans. “My parents were offered green cards in 1989 and turned them down, so when we decided to come back, we were granted visas and the hope that we would someday get green cards. I’m no longer considered an international student here at Montclair because I will be gaining citizenship in just a few months. I’m very happy, as I know that the opportunities here in America are great, and the value of a degree is immeasurable.”

While some students try to stop time as they experience new adventures week by week, other students wish to return home, half a world away.

“I came here just three weeks ago,” said Roberto Fernandez, a 20 year-old advertising major from Madrid.

Fernandez explained that the opportunity to come as a Study Abroad student was granted by luck. The University of Antonio de Nebrija in Spain is affiliated with Montclair State University, and the program was only accepting one student to come to the U.S. in exchange for a student to go to Spain.

“The tuition is not so much the challenge. I pay Spain tuition, which is very little, so all that’s left to pay is my rent at the Village,” said Fernandez.

Though the prospect of coming to America may seem exciting at first, some students may experience the first stages of culture shock, including Young Eun, a 20 year-old business major. “It’s too expensive here. It’s hard to make friends. I don’t like that shopping here is so expensive. You need a car to get to places, [whereas] in Korea, public transportation is everywhere.”

However, both Fernandez and Charlotte Vangsnes, a 22 year-old hospitality major from Norway, are enjoying their time in America to the fullest extent. Vangsnes’s reason for coming to Montclair State University is “to be as far from Norway as I possibly could, while being close to New York City.”

Fernandez’s opinion on prices in America differs greatly from Eun’s. He thinks the clothing here is cheap in comparison to Spain. “Over the summer, I bought a shirt from Abercrombie that was $60; one shirt! Over here I went shopping and found a shirt that was very similar for just $10.”

“People are so critical about the United States, so I wanted to see what it was like for myself,” said Vangsnes.

“It’s not nearly as bad as people make it seem. I’m doing just fine,” said Vangsnes.

When asked about making friends, she responded, “It can be difficult at first, but living in the village helps. It is so diverse, and makes it easier to speak to people. I love learning about different cultures.”

Culture shock can be unsettling in every way, especially when there are language barriers.

“People might extol bilingualism and cultural awareness, but in reality the general attitude makes one feel less than appreciated,” says Jee Suen Chin, a former international student of Notre Dame.

“It is extremely frustrating when you have something to say in class but cannot express it or misrepresent it due to the language barrier. Your classmates often appear more intelligent because of their mastery of the language the class is taught in. You might be the sole contributor of an idea that isn’t received by anyone else because the reference is specific to your cultural upbringing.”

Visit Some A-“Credited” Websites

O

ur lives revolve around the internet.

It’s an undeniable truth. Every experience in our lives is documented on various platforms of social media. The people behind those random blogs we follow on Tumblr and Twitter soon become our online friends. To say that our entire lives could be integrated onto the internet is preposterous, right?

Marshall McLuhan had said, “Is it not absurd for men to live involuntarily altered in their inmost lives by some mere technological extension of our inner senses?”

He theorized that human interaction with technology can be an extension of the human psyche. So it would make sense for colleges to provide online classes.

We know that MSU has some online or hybrid class options for students to take and many students appreciate them.

During winter break, when snow is piled high, it is convenient for students and professors alike to have

the option to take and teach classes online.

Online classes allow students to save gas, stay in bed and are more cost efficient.

Many don’t notice, but in our bookstore there are little vouchers with codes that allow you to have your textbooks on your computer.

These eBooks are usually cheaper and use less resources to be made than a normal text book. If we had online classes, we could promote the use of eBooks.

Other universities such as Harvard, Stanford, Duke and many others are teaming up with Coursera in order to promote free online classes to their students.

Coursera is a website that provides hundreds of free courses taught by prominent professors. The only issue with Coursera is that you will not receive credits. Instead, you will receive a certificate of completion. The certificate will state that you have completed a course online, which may show employers that you are well versed in a certain subject.

However, there is some concern because many are unsure if the certificate will suffice in comparison to a formal education, though it does provide knowledge in a field your university lacks in, for example, MSU’s lack of advertising classes within the Communication Department.

There are certain colleges that will accept free online courses as credits if a student provides the certificate as proof in addition to writing an essay about said course.

LearningCounts.org

provides a list of these universities, which means if you are a student enrolled in one of these colleges, you can potentially get credit for online classes.

This is also beneficial to universities because they are promoting free classes, which will hopefully boost their application and acceptance rates providing more revenue for the university.

In a strange way, it feels like a binding contract for students to stay in a certain college so that they do not lose credits for taking these online courses, which may have a negative effect for students who can no longer afford to go to a certain school.

Also, who is to say that online classes will be as efficient for students?

We pay to go to school so that we can receive a good education. A free class almost seems too good to be true. The one-on-one time

with professors is also a great advantage in the learning process. We can easily get in contact with them if we are struggling with our course work.

Also, developing a good relationship with professors may help you in the future, whether it be finding a job or having them as a reference. Professors are also there to keep you in check, whether you are struggling in their classes or just getting distracted by technology.

Many also prefer the classroom feel where you can socialize. Online courses could potentially change university life forever, which may threaten the belief that college is the “best time of your life.” No one wants to remember their glory days sitting behind a computer screen or going to school in their pajamas.

There is one inevitable fact; online classes are becoming more popular. Whether you believe sites such as Coursera are beneficial or not, it would be nice to have the option to choose.

Montclair State University should highly consider integrating these websites in their curriculum.

“The one purely online class that I did was really difficult to motivate yourself to get all the work done on time. It’s really hard because you can’t interact with the professor either.

The only comments you get back are written comments on your essay, and you can’t tell if they’re sarcastic or not at times.

I have a hybrid course and it’s much, much better because you have the in-person motivation and it’s very clear, like we’re going to blog on this day, like this day it’s due, have it done by our in-face class, so in general, I think I prefer the hybrid to the online.”

“They’re very easy and they’re convenient. You can do it at your own pace, and it’s definitely less work, but I only took one online class.”

“Well, I took a summer online class and then this semester I’m taking a hybrid class. I like the hybrid class better because you actually get to meet with your teacher and it’s not solely online. I feel like online classes are not as challenging because when you’re taking tests and stuff, you have the information in front of you and you don’t really need to memorize anything, so I think they’re easier than regular classes, but I guess they work schedule-wise because they’re obviously easier to do than having to come to campus.

Good Gravy! A Holiday Survival Guide America’s favorite dressing makes the holidays truly happy

he holidays are a beautiful time for many and they are made up of those w a r m evenings

spent with family and friends, eating copious amounts of victuals while sharing stories of life’s trials, triumphs and successes.

Conversely, it is also a time of turmoil, stress and despair for those who desperately seek to fulfill the “Hallmarked” ideal of the holidays, which the media in America relentlessly perpetuates.

While it may be your brother and father lamenting over their fantasy football league scores, or your mother and sister crying stories of survival at shopping malls, in which packs of frenzied adults scurry over and under one another like rodents or your mother and father gossiping over the Tillman neighbor’s son just being arrested for indecently exposing himself during a high school performance of “The Nutcracker,” it is you who will be the catalyst to yuletide ecstasy for

your family this holiday season.

This will be so because you will have read this article bestowed upon you ever so graciously by yours truly and will now possess the wherewithal to bring the true “holiday spirit” to your dinner table. I’m talking about gravy.

Not that a person should deliberate on whether or not to bring gravy to the holiday table (or any table for that matter), but the following points should help those that still have misgivings as to why eating gravy will alleviate tension, lower stress, provide the power of flight and possibly save you and your family members’ lives this holiday season. Gravy.

First and foremost, the only reason anything bad could happen in or around your home this year is because there is an obvious lack of gravy present.

Gravy is the greatest and most profound substance that humans have cultivated. It is harsher than molten lava and more refined than the finest diamond. It is at the top of Mount Everest and at the bottom of the Serpent Trench. It flows freer than the Nile and swifter than Niagara. I’m talking about gravy.

Eating gravy is also unquestionably good for your health and often resounds improvement in fascinating ways.

Food Nutritionists such

as Subway University’s Paul Frankincense have studied the long-term effects of gravy and have subsequently concluded that gravy has its natural place in our dietary systems, and should be applied as the very base of our food pyramid as the building block for a healthy life.

Frankincense observes in his 2008 report, “Practical Application and Benefits of Gravy,” said that “It is astonishing to see the effects which are displayed in our participants.”

From heart disease to anemia, gravy has had positive impacts on nearly all those who have integrated it into their diets for more than three weeks.

One participant in particular acquired the ability of flight during this “testing process.”

During these especially choleric and fattening times of the year, gravy seems to be a necessity.

Gravy can be made out of literally anything, providing an ease of access for any class that wishes to consume it. Turkey gravy, vegetable gravy, lemon gravy, grape gravy, pork gravy, beef gravy, goose gravy; the list can infinitely continue.

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, so they say, unless you are using the goose in order to make the gravy.

Moreover, gravy goes with anything. Turkey and mashed potatoes, biscuits, gravy, peanut butter

and jelly sandwiches, apples, corn, cornbread, America, the United Nations, the Middle East and other parts of the orient. The only thing gravy doesn’t go well with is segregation. It really should be included in everything.

Gravy also inspires reverence for those who have patronized its savories. Figures such as Abraham Lincoln and Santa Claus love gravy with an undying passion.

Daniel Day-Lewis, during the pre-production period of his newest film “Lincoln” was reported having a strictly gravy-based diet in order to more directly relate our late president to the audience.

If he wins an Oscar for his role, you will now know why: gravy.

If these reasons alone are not enough to compel you to go out and buy as much gravy as possible right now, then be sure to keep reading.

The next few articles will highlight specifically the dayto-day applications of gravy, such as its use in cuisine, in relationship building, in studying, and in quantifying overall human experience on Earth. In the meantime, stay wise and eat gravy. It is “all gravy,” so they say.

And Survey Says: Too Vague Online evaluation surveys fail to give adjunct professors the credit they deserve

D

u ring this past week, the office of the Provost sent out an email for Kristen Bryfogle students Asst. opinions to take editor online surveys evaluating courses taught by adjuncts. The surveys provided an outlet for students to evaluate the positive and negative aspects of their courses in both quantitative and qualitative systems of review.

As I was filling out the surveys for each of my professors and their courses, I noticed some questions on the form which I did not expect.

The office of the Provost wrote in the body of the email, “Your feedback is essential!

Faculty use student evaluations to improve their courses, and Depart-

ments use evaluations to make decisions regarding reappointment.

Your views count!” Considering the importance of these surveys to the school and individual departments within the school, I became more confused by their questions.

Evaluating how much I learned in the class based on a preselected list of choices, and then being prompted to type an open response to the conclusions I drew from the class specifically troubled me.

For example, I took an introductory Classical mythology course this semester which was taught by an adjunct professor. I enjoyed many aspects of the class, and the instructor earns my highest praise, but I learned Classical mythology all throughout high school.

Therefore, the amount of new information I learned in that class differed greatly from my classmates who had never taken a mythology class before. But, the variance in the amount of learning had little to nothing to do with my professor’s skill and performance.

I took the additional comments section at the end of the survey to

explain this situation, but what if I hadn’t? It would have been easier for me to mark “some” or “little” when asked how much I learned, and without an opportunity to explain this rating through writing, this could have negatively affected my professor’s evaluation.

Furthermore, the survey asked what conclusions we had drawn from the course and its instruction. This question seems entirely too vague to address all of my evaluated classes.

Were these conclusions about the instructor supposed to evaluate their skills inside of the classroom, their choice of assignments or their grading system? Wasn’t that what the above numerical ranking system of the quality of class was for? Was this a mandatory question? If I chose to leave it blank, would it lead to the result that I learned nothing from the class or the professor? I was overall baffled and gave very cursory, probably useless commentary because I could not decipher what the question sought.

It is important for students to be able to evaluate their professors in a serious, professional setting, but with these sections of the survey, I found myself asking, “Is this really what is valued when deciding if a professor has done a good job?”

The overall system appeared muddled to me, and I wished there had been more opportunities to give written, qualitative responses accompanying the numerical evaluations.

If there had been places to comment and explain why I had given my professors the rating I had, then I feel that I could have evaluated my professors effectively, with the thoroughness they deserve.

However, I did not feel as if this was possible in the structure of the surveys offered. I hope that some of these issues are cleared up next semester, so that students can give more accurate responses in the future.

I don’t know what possessed the interviewer to ask DMX if he knew the lyrics, but I’m glad she did because he firmly stated, “Oh, I know the lyrics,” and delivered what could be the best video of the year. Of course, the rapper added his signature bark, giving the classic Ruff Ryder edge. This, along with his deep, raspy voice was a formula that went viral. Legendary Jazz Musician Dave Brubeck passes away at 91.

To leave behind a legacy is considered an understatement for Dave Brubeck. The 91-yearold jazz pianist legend passed away yesterday from heart failure and leaves us with easily recognizable jazz standards such as “Take Five” and “Blue Rondo à la Turk.” Both are songs with odd time signatures that were trademarks of Dave Brubeck’s songwriting technique. With time signatures of 5/4 and 9/8 respectively, Brubeck and his quartet toured college campuses during the 1950s and accumulated the beginnings of an following that would grow into a recognition that only acclaimed artists could maintain over a lifetime of work.

DMX is one of those iconic figures in hip-hop history that doesn’t need a new album or a multi-million dollar video to gain some press. The rapper, who has gained international fame for his hyper-masculine rhymes and signature bark in the mid 1990s helped establish the mold for hardcore rap and put his crew, the Ruff Ryders, on the map.

In September, his much-anticipated seventh studio album Undisputed was released and received positive reviews, proving that the seasoned veteran still had a place in the current scene of bubblegum rap.

With some sticky run-ins with the law, a couple stints in jail and his dramatic appearance on VH1’s “Couples Therapy” this year, DMX is now finding himself once again in the spotlight when a video of the rapper surfaced singing the classic holiday carol “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

Some actors are ruined by films that tank in the box office. Other actors suffer the fatal fall simply because their role was absurd. And then there are those few actors that are immune to bad reputations.

In this case, I’m defining bad reputation based on the assumption that the person casting the judgment is someone that is vaguely versed in contemporary film. The actor that I am speaking of is none other than Nicolas Cage.

Nicolas Cage changed his name early in his career in order to distinguish himself from his family. Famed director Francis Ford Coppola is his uncle and his cousins are Sophia Coppola, Jason Schwartzman and Roman Coppola.

This family of Hollywood heavy-hitters was not responsible for Cage’s early success; rather, Cage’s quirky notoriety spoke for itself.

I’ve lost count of how many YouTube compilations I have seen of “Cage’s Freak-outs.”

Cage has the uncanny ability to psyche himself out so intensely before a scene that he bursts into screaming dialogue, spilling pent-up rage.

such as Vampire’s Kiss (1988), Honeymoon in Vegas (1992) and most recently Ghost Rider (2007).

Cage has maintained respect among his colleagues. One simply cannot ignore Cage’s myriad of other brilliant performances.

Cage stars in Charlie Kaufman’s masterpiece, Adaptation. This postmodernist film required Cage to play Charlie Kaufman writing about himself and his twin brother. Cage takes on the dual role of playing two vastly opposite twin brothers.

Not only was the performance based on character nuances, but also the subject matter required a deep understanding of the Hollywood system.

man’s previous hit, Being John Malkovich, while Kaufman struggles to adapt a novel about orchids into the next big hit.

Cage commits to the character and convincingly portrays a struggling screenwriter in the throes of self-loathing. Adaptation lacks the famous Nicolas Cage freak-out but makes up for the spectacle in its commentary on the Hollywood formula.

Adaptation is not the only film that Cage has showcased his acting talents. Weather Man (2005), in which Cage stars, is the type of film that leaves you with the feeling of utter despair.

Why do people always hate the weatherman? Cage’s character suffers unconventionally.

His daughter is overweight

and is acutely aware of the repercussions of an obese childhood. Cage’s acting talents shine through in the most bleak circumstances. We do not hate Cage’s character for being occasionally insufferable in this film. Rather, Cage moves us to understand that everyone has their own reasons.

Let’s not forget his roles in Raising Arizona (1987), Lord of War (2005) or The Wicker Man (2006). Who could forget “Not the bees! Not the beeeeeees!”? There are those films that Cage commits to not for acting credentials but for the simple reason that they are fun films to star in.

Cage stars in the National Treasure franchise as well as the converted graphic novel Kick Ass (2010). At times in Cage’s career, he seemed to have starred in films simply because it was a way to fill time. An actor always wants to act and Cage is no exception.

As a rule, I will always watch a Cage film simply for the spectacle and the hope that he will throw the audience a quotable line. Nicolas Cage has the rare ability to retain respect and fall into films that, at times, seem ridiculous.

Watch out for the next Cage film. It might be another Adaptation, or, for the more entertainment minded cinephiles, a second Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

Storytelling Through Movement Review of Insula

Insula, a Kari Margolis project with contributions by its student ensemble, delivers a brilliant piece about humanity, the flaws of which is told through minimum sinister dialogue but maximum movement sequences.

It will be playing at the L. Howard Fox Theatre until Dec. 8.

A recent newsbreak informs us that a foreign island has been discovered and that discoveries of life on this island are in the works. During the play, we see various forms of human interaction, some very juvenile and some quite violent.

The country declares war on this island, invades it and brings back its inhabitants for study, only to realize that they are human just like us. The play ends with the question: Would it not be great if we could coexist on one island, planet Earth, accept differences and come together?

The story is not told chronologically but rather told through moments with lighting, music and on-screen background as added effects. These moments are scattered to portray different time periods and situations to either mock where humanity has gone wrong or to just simply portray how humans are not treated with respect.

“I thought for a long time as to what theme I felt would be inspirational for both the students and myself,” says Margolis. “I originally thought about juxtaposing a primitive island with the way we create islands for ourselves in the modern world. Islands are provocative. They can be places of

exotic enjoyment or places of extreme isolation. I wanted to find a theme that would give the students a lot to create about, but in a way that would go beyond just telling personal stories. As with all work created on its feet in the studio, the original idea expanded to encompass mythological islands, literary islands and islands inside our imaginations.

Dr. Trauth thought it would be important for the students to have the opportunity to experience a different way of creating theatre, one that is actor-centered and developed in the studio.

Dr. Trauth went to great lengths

to help make this project a reality and Insula certainly would not exist without her support.

A great part, which to me represents birth and death, shows the male cast members rolling onto the stage in the fetal position, then dancing with junior Brittany Sambogna to symbolize life. They then roll offstage to the other end to represent their deaths. The female cast members involved in this scene are dressed as surgical doctors and the male members in the fetal position stumble across stage when they are “born” and then again when they “die,” further empha-

sizing the meaning of the scene.

Now I am going to do something in this theater review that I have never done before: critique the audience. For some reason, audience members feel the need to applaud on cue when a scene finishes, especially on a strong note and when the stage goes black. Do not do this when watching Insula. Hold off until the end. Applauding between scenes in a play like this interrupts the magic of such an intense and invigorating piece.

There’s a Soldier in All of Us A look at Black Ops II

It’s easy to become disillusioned with the Call of Duty series when a new entry is released year after year, but Black Ops II makes some smart changes to keep itself fresh in the oversaturated genre of shooters.

The campaign follows the events of the first Black Ops, but the story jumps between two distinctive periods. You play as Alex Mason, the protagonist of the prior game in the 1980s, and as his son David in the year 2025.

Both are after the same man, Raul Menendez, who turns from a drug kingpin to the leader of an Anonymous terrorist organization.

It’s more of a personal story on how these characters have wronged each other than an entire “World War III” scenario, although there is a little bit of world-ending chaos towards the finale. The characters have weight and respond differently to the choices you make throughout the campaign. Sometimes, the choice is as black and white as, “This guy needs to die, will you kill him?” Other choices can be affected by having the right intel which could have been gathered beforehand through certain levels and cutscenes.

Only blood can quench your thirst.

There are also “Strike Force” missions which are optional, but not doing them can affect the story.

Depending on the choices you make in the main campaign, you may not even get to see all the missions. In the missions, you move different squads of soldiers, or mechs, as you try to capture or defend an objective from a top-down, tactical view.

There is also the option of controlling any unit on the battlefield and playing the mission out like any other level, and with the bad teammate A.I. who sometimes don’t move when you command them, this is absolutely necessary.

The biggest change to multiplayer is its pick-10 class system where any gun, perk or grenade

is equal to one point and you have a limited amount of slots to assign these to. This leads to crazy loadouts such as having an assault rifle with three attachments and no grenades or giving yourself six perks and only a knife. This system makes creating classes extremely flexible without breaking the game.

Other than that, the multiplayer is still as smooth and fun as it has always been. Whether you want anymore of it is your choice because the multiplayer remains largely unchanged from past iterations.

The “Zombies” co-op mode returns where four players must survive zombie waves through boarding up windows and killing as many as possible. A new mechanic for the mode is finding

scrap parts in the environment which can be combined to create riot shields, traps or nonlethal tools. It’s still the same Zombies mode you either love or hate, depending on if you have friends to play it with because working with non-communicating strangers can be frustrating.

Grief mode puts two teams of four players on a small map as each team tries to outlast the other against waves of zombies.

If neither team survives the round, the round restarts. This mode sounds fun on paper, but the matches run longer than they should when no team survives a round and it is more tedious than fun.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II is available now for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PC and Wii U.

Jiu-Jitsu Takes Montclair State by Storm Jason Burns Contributing Writer

Cearyan Whang may come off as any small, innocent girl at Montclair State University, but what isn’t immediately apparent is that she is a force to be reckoned with in a fight, thanks to her Jiujitsu training at the Student Recreational Center.

“If a guy did try to do something, like hurt me or take advantage of me, I would probably surprise him,” Whang said with a grin.

Whang participates in the Jiu-jitsu classes taught by senior and purple belt in Brazilian Jiujitsu Brian Procel. The class is offered to all students for free Monday and Thursday nights at the Student Recreation Center. Along with other guys and girls in the class, Whang trains to learn how to effectively defend herself under Procel’s guidance while also working out and having fun.

“When I first started out I saw it as a self defense thing. Now I keep going because it’s a great workout,” said Whang.

Jiu-jitsu has traditionally been a male-dominated sport due to the fact that it’s physically demanding at first glance. However, while there are mostly men in this class, there are also three consistent female participants.

“I would love to see even more women try this class,” said Whang. “Girls may not have the same muscle power that men sometimes have, but they are more practical and rely more on technique.

Different body types have their pros and cons in this sport.”

It wasn’t the male dominance that Whang was worried about at first. It was her interpretation of the sport.

“It looked like wrestling at first, so I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it,” said Whang. “You have to try it out to really understand what it’s all about. I think when people just look at it, it turns them off.”

While the class has certainly helped Whang become a stronger contender, there are men out there who wish to have more skill and

confidence in self-defense. Chris Schilmoeller is one of the many male students who take Procel’s class regularly. Schilmoeller is also new to the sport and decided to try it out.

“One of the reasons I like it is because it’s really challenging for me and something that was outside of my comfort zone at first,” said Schilmoeller. “I’m smaller than everybody so it can be hard sometimes, but this class doesn’t just teach self-defense. It teaches you how to learn, grow and keep your perseverance.”

It is said that good students like Whang and Schilmoeller can only be the result of a wise and patient master. Luckily under Procel’s guidance, help and support he is insuring that everybody is learning and having a good time.

“It’s a martial art based on the ground that helps you utilize your body to your advantage,” said Procel. “I would tell a girl that if they wanted to learn how to kick a guy’s butt, then this is the class for them.”

Procel really believes that his class can be for everyone who has the right mind set.

“You use your hips and body movement to your advantage. It’s not focusing so much on strength, it’s more about proper technique. I feel everyone can learn how to do it if they are determined.”

Whang sees herself as evidence of Procel’s words of encouragement, especially when it comes to women succeeding in this sport.

This is made clear in the last half of the Jiu-jitsu class which consists of “rolling,” or testing your skills against an opponent while trying to get him or her to tap out from a well-applied submission. During this “rolling” time, Whang goes toe to toe with mostly men who are bigger than her. Yet, that does not stop her from holding her own, and even making some of the other guys tap out.

“I think we [girls] have this inner strength and aggressions that can be unleashed. When we’re younger, we may be steered away from that sort of thing. Now that we’re [old] though, we should embrace our potential,” said Whang.

The Jiu-jitsu class has

reached an all-time high in popularity and is continuing to grow. A Jiu-jitsu club is even in the works due to its success. Procel remains enthusiastic about the future of the class and the new people who will try it out.

“Of all the different exercise programs we have here at the Rec

Center, Jiu-jitsu is the polar opposite of what people are used to expect,” said Procel. “Once people actually try it and start to understand that they actually could do it, and that it’s not meant for a specific type of person, they’ll want to do it again and get even better. It’s a good feeling.”

Swim Teams Start at 2-2 Mike Panepinto Staff Writer

This year has been filled with some incredible highlights for both the men’s and women’s swimming teams at Montclair State University. Although the men’s team only has three seniors and the women’s team has only five seniors, both squads have had solid showings so far to give both the men’s and women’s groups a chance at some postseason swimming opportunities.

So far, both the men and lady Red Hawks have taken part in four meets, one relay race and one invitational. Both teams are 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the NJAC Conference. At the Union College Relays, the men’s team took second place while the women’s team captured fourth place.

The Golden Bear Invitational also provided more positive results for MSU as the guys collected first place and the girls got second place.

Some of the accomplishments for this season’s men squad include senior Zak Westerberg as he won both the 50m freestyle and the 100m butterfly with times of 22:08 and 54:68 seconds respectively against Seton Hall.

Westerberg had another strong showing in the second

meet as he tallied first place in the 100m freestyle with a time of 48:91 seconds when the Red Hawks faced off with TCNJ.

Senior diver Anthony Cacella won the 1m diving event, besting his sophomore teammate Tommy Dreisbach by a score of 190.58 to 188.33. At the Union College Relays, the team of Westerberg, senior Thomas Long, junior Joseph Berry and junior Michael Smith won the 500m freestyle event with a time of 4.18:63 and the 400m freestyle event with a time of 3.15:89.

In a dual meet against Adelphi and Drew, Smith won the 1000m freestyle with a time of 11.07:60, the 200m freestyle with a time of 1.48:57, and the 500m freestyle in a time of 5.06:81. Westerberg also had a strong performance as he claimed first in the 100m butterfly in 53:90 seconds, the 200m butterfly at 2.10:05 and the 100 mfreestyle with a time of 49:28.

Against Drew the next day, Westerberg claimed the 200m medley individual championship in a time of 2.04:82 and Smith won the 50m freestyle with a time of 23:36.

Berry took the title of 1600m freestyle champion and freshman Robert Becker won first in the 200m freestyle at a time of 1.51:78. At the two-day Golden Bear Invitational, Montclair State took first winning

15 events and accumulating a grand total of 626 points over the weekend.

The women have also had some solid performances this season including the shattering of a 36-year-old MSU women’s swimming record. At Seton Hall, junior Kelsie Donahue claimed the 1000m freestyle title in a time of 11.27:02.

In the next match against TCNJ, freshman Katherine LaCava made her way into the Lady Red Hawks record books by posting a time of 2.12:97 in the 200m butterfly.

At the Union College Relays, the MSU women’s team of senior Ashley Vallone, senior Maria Vira and sophomore Christine Werner tallied a time of 3.37:37 and won first place in the 300m breaststroke relay. At Adelphi, Vallone claimed the 100 freestyle and the 100m breaststroke in times of 56:67 and 1.11:46 respectively.

Vallone then swam with Donahue, Vira and freshman Gabriella Bosa in the 200m relay to tie for first place with a time of 1.57:05.

Donahue also won the 100m backstroke in 1.04:88 and the 200m individual medley with a time of 2.25:69.

Against Drew the next day, Vallone took the 200m freestyle title in a time of 2.07:48 and the 100 backstroke with a time of 1.06:39.

At Drew University, the

relay team of Vallone, Donahue, Werner and Bosa took the 200m championship in a time of 1.59:23.

Donahue was able to win the 1650m freestyle at a time of 18.52:63. Bosa won the 200m individual medley at Drew with a time of 2.30:73.

At the two-day Golden Bear Invitational at Kutztown University, the Lady Red Hawks claimed 516 points and finished second to only East Stroudsburg University.

Both the men and women of Montclair State University’s swim team take on St. Peter’s College and Manhattan College on Dec. 7 at 5 p.m. at the Panzer Athletic Center. Manhattan College’s men enter with a record of 6-1 and St. Peter’s College men’s swim team comes in with a record of 2-2.

The Lady Jaspers come to MSU at a record of 5-2 and the Lady Peacocks enter the meet at 0-4.

He ran the third leg on the 4x400 relay team that finished third overall, posting a time of 3:34.39. He then ran the second leg of the 4x800 relay team that placed fourth as that group clocked in at 8:26.57.

NFL Loses Player to Tragic Suicide Mike Pendleton Staff Writer

In one of the most tragic domestic violence cases the NFL has ever seen, Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend Kassandra Perkins while his own mother was in their house, then proceeded to get in his car, drive to Arrowhead Stadium (home of the Chiefs) and when confronted by general manager Scott Pioloi, head coach Romeo Crennell and position coach Dwayne Wilmot, he thanked them for all they had done, and according to reports “kneeled behind a car, made the sign of the cross, and put a single bullet into his head.”

Following this occurrence, NBC’s Bob Costas took his halftime segment to voice his opinion on gun control and how that this all may have been avoided if Jovan Belcher didn’t have possession of any guns.

That leads to raise the question, should journalists use tragedy in sports to voice their own opinions?

The answer is a firm no. Was Jovan Belcher wrong to legally own guns? Once again, the answer is no. Obviously, it goes without saying that Belcher was in the wrong by committing this senseless act that will leave the couple’s three-

month-old child without parents.

Chiefs’ quarterback Brady Quinn said it best, “When you ask someone how they’re doing, do you mean it?

When you answer that question, do you really mean your answer?” While not everyone will be a football fan or sports fan in general, that question should awaken the thoughts of all of us. It’s a more serious thing than just a football player who just snapped.

Did Jovan Belcher’s internal struggle with his emotions lead to this tragedy?

While the answers to all questions will be revealed within the coming days and weeks, how can Jovan Belcher’s story connect to all of our personal lives? Just because his workplace was a high-paying job that had national interest doesn’t mean he was different than you or I.

Jovan Belcher like any NFL player, like any other person, had a personal life. Most of his life will now come out in eerie detail.

There will be people who hate Jovan Belcher for what he did. We’ve seen the outcry on gun control and the dirty way the media has covered him, marking him as a murderer. A sick, disgusting NFL player who just snapped, that’s how Jovan Belcher has been portrayed.

The word “portray” is where the problem lies, not only in this case, but could also relate to most any people out here in the world.

How are we portrayed? Since

Wrong. Emotions, depression, anger, we all feel that emotion.

Whether your name is Tom Brady, Jovan Belcher or John Smith, we are all human. If you are a person who struggles with emotions and likes to hold things in, talk to someone. No matter what the situation, no matter the emotion, someone wants to listen and someone wants to help.

Believe it or not, you are never alone. If you are a person who knows someone who keeps their emotions to themselves and are suffering from anxiety, depression or any illness, do the right thing and talk to them.

As Quinn said, do you really mean the question when you ask it?

Do you truly care about the well-being of oth-

ers, or yourself for that matter?

There is no question that Jovan Belcher should have never let his life get to the point of a tragic end. His girlfriend Kassandra Perkins should have never had to suffer their unfortunate fate.

The Kansas City Chiefs had counseling for the couple, and their staff of Scott Pioli, Romeo Crennell and Wilmot should have never had to witness one of their own take his own life.

Suicide is a very serious matter.

Depression and anger, which can lead one to the choice of suicide, are very serious emotions that must have attention paid to them.

Domestic violence happens every day, as do the emotions of depression and anger, with suicide being the ugly ending. No matter anyone’s opinion, no matter your stance on legal matters, what truly matters is emotions and the help that some may need.

Montclair State off to 6-0 Start Nick Verhagen Sports Editor

Last week, the Montclair State women’s basketball team continued their flawless season with two more wins, extending their winning streak to five games.

The Red Hawks are now 5-0 overall with a 3-0 record in NJAC play.

The week started with an away game against conference rival William Paterson. The game was evenly contested through the first few minutes but, following a 12-11 lead by the Pioneers, the Red Hawks went on a 10-0 run to bring the score to 21-12 with nine minutes left. After that run, the Red Hawks held at least a five-point lead throughout the remaining nine minutes to go into the half up 29-22.

After halftime, the Red Hawks hit the ground running with a layup by sophomore forward Melissa Tobie 15 seconds into the half.

The Pioneers managed to pull the game within five in the second minute but a 23-2 run sparked by freshman guard Shalette Brown ended any hopes of a Pioneer comeback.

Several factors greatly attributed to the MSU victory. On offense, it was their ability to get the ball and force the Pioneers to run back on their heels. The Red Hawks turned 21 turnovers into 24 points while the Pioneers only

MSU also played excellent defense, shutting down the William Paterson reserves by not allowing a single point by its bench players.

Leading the team to the 6241 victory was Brown, Tobie, junior guard Nicosia Henry and sophomore guard Janitza Aquino. The four combined for 46 points and 25 rebounds with Tobie leading the charge with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Following the win over the Pioneers, the Red Hawks hosted the 4-2 Raiders of Rutgers-Newark. There really isn’t much to say about their game against the Raid-

ers other than they dominated.

Other than having one less block, the Red Hawks bested the Raiders in every statistical category.

After jumping to an 11-0 lead, MSU only dropped to a single-digit lead four times. For the whole game, the Raiders only saw the heels of the Red Hawks and an orange blur flying around as the teams came onto the court for the second half with MSU up 38-21.

The Red Hawks didn’t just beat the Raiders, they made it look like a game between the New York Knicks and a high school team. Not only did the Red Hawks out-rebound

them, capitalizing on offensive rebounds for 30 points, but they also turned 32 turnovers into 34 points.

Once again, the team was lead by Henry and Tobie with their combined 25 points and 16 rebounds, but the whole team contributed to this one as 10 different players put points on the board.

The Red Hawks are next scheduled to visit Rutgers-Camden on Dec. 8 followed by a home game against Stevens. After five games, Tobie currently leads the team with an impressive 16.8 points per game while Henry leads the team with in rebounds with 6.6 per game.
