Lost at Sea: Senior Graduate in Trip Fails to Excite Four Years Director of Academic Success Appointed

will sail out of New York City and dock in Wharf, Bermuda. With four and a half days at sea and two and a half days in Bermuda, the trip will cost $650 per person. A $300 non-refundable

Construction Begins on Einstein Bros. Bagels in College Hall Joseph Lisnow Assistant News Editor
The coffee and snack bar inside College Hall will be replaced to make way for the newest eatery on campus, Einstein Bros. Bagels, adding a new dining option for students and faculty. “Students, faculty, staff and visitors are going to love the new Einstein Bros. Bagels concept,” said Andrew Pignataro, director of auxiliary services. “The students that spend time on the north end of campus will really love the convenience. The folks
that spend time in athletics, Russ, Freeman, Kasser, College Hall and the Cali School of Music will now have more choices than simply Café Diem or the Freeman Dining Hall. The Einstein Bros. Bagels concept will be impressive to prospective students too.” The coffee and snack bar has been relocated to room 217 in College Hall until Einstein Bros. Bagels is complete. Once opened, the coffee and snack bar will be permanently closed. Construction began Feb. 14 and completion is scheduled for late spring accord-

ing to Pignataro. The exact date depends on several factors including the approval from the Department of Community Affairs and inspections from the health department. Pignataro hopes to have it opened by the end of the current spring semester. Several reasons led to the decision to add an Einstein Bros. Bagels, according to Pignataro. As of the Spring 2010 semester, 34 percent of students at Montclair State graduate within four years, while almost 62 percent take six years to graduate. In response to this, the university has created a new position: the director of academic success. Tara Morlando-Zurlo has been hired for this position, which aims to help students establish and complete clear four-year paths to graduation. Available to every student, the director of academic success wants to make sure students have a full comprehension of the policies and procedures of their respective academic programs, with the ultimate goal that students will complete their degrees as efficiently and quickly as pos-

sible. “Our intention is for [the director of academic success] to be convenient by ensuring that there is one centralized place students can go to obtain answers, get recommendations and/or just receive support,” Vice President Dr. Karen Pennington said. “[This is] the university’s formal commitment to maintaining and improving students’ academic progress towards graduation,” said Pennington. “Student success has always been our priority and now we are moving that commitment front and center with an office that is designed to help students achieve success.” Pennington also said that the new advisor will be used to help students evaluate personal plans for academic success, surGraduation Continued on Page 5
