Montclair State University will be hosting the New Jersey premiere of 8 on Saturday.

The play is an unprecedented account of the court case, Perry vs. Schwarzenegger, that took place in California. The case was filed by the civil rights group,

American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER), who demanded an overturning of Proposition 8, a ballot initiative that terminated gay and lesbian couples’ right to marriage.

The plaintiffs in the court case were two California couples, Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo, and Kristin Perry and Sandra Stier, who sued the state of Cali-

fornia in attempt to get the same marriage rights as heterosexuals.

The play was written by Founding Board member and Academy Award-winning writer Dustin Lance Black, an active LGBT rights supporter. He based the play on the actual transcripts from the trial, along with firsthand observations of the courtroom and inter-

views with the plaintiffs and their families.

The play premiered at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on Broadway on Sept.

19, 2011. The cast included big-name actors, such as Morgan Freeman, Christine Lahti, John Lithgow and Bradley Whitford. The show made over $1 million in support of the gay marriage cause.

AFER decided to license the play out to colleges and community theatres nationwide in 2012 in order to spread awareness and share the powerful story of an important political shift in America.

Let Us Print for Free

Students continue to disagree with the print limit Haylee Lenkey Assistant News Editor

In an effort to stop printer-abusing patrons, open up accessibility on campus and help the environment, the University implemented changes to printing labs by introducing the PaperCut software program at the start of the semester.

Under the recent changes, students are given a $40 spending limit for printing, which amounts to 800 single pages or 1,142 double pages at the beginning of each fall and spring semester. This meter is placed on every student's account.

Indeed, the ability to print from anywhere on campus is beneficial.

Students can remotely access the PaperCut software by logging in at http://printit.montclair.edu:9191/ user.

However, some students have negative feelings regarding this new process.

“We shouldn’t have a limit; we already pay more than enough in tuition,” said Sabreen Taha, 18.

There are pros and cons to this new program. Students are now more aware, considering the impact of printing. However, some students worry that they may be unable to print out everything for their classes before reaching their limit.

“I really paid much more attention to my printing habits this semester because of that ominous red number keeping my tab,” said Ebony Vee. “I still have $37 left and have gotten all my assignments done, even accidentally printing extra. I appreciate the effort for green consciousness and budget, but this is coming from someone who doesn't need to print as much. Think of other majors, like teaching and law

and psych people who have to print out mad articles and such. They should also take into consideration the programs they're putting this restraint on.”

Tips for students to conserve their print count: -Take advantage of your double page prints! You can print more if you use both sides of the paper.

-Try decreasing font sizes to use fewer pages.

-Use personal printers to print those last-minute papers and save a trip to the printing lab!

In light of recent events in not only New Jersey but throughout the nation, this upcoming play will demonstrate the position of the gay population in America, and how that position is shifting into one more favorable for both the homosexual community and American society. “[Gay marriage] is like everything else. Although a lot of people might be moved by the play, some people will still be against it, but that’s what freedom is,” Allen said.

“I behaved so conservatively with my printing that I have something like $37 of my original $40 left,” said Jack Smith, 22, a broadcasting student. “When you know you can run out, you have to save, because the idea of being unable to print on campus is unacceptable. Students need free printing services. Nevertheless, I totally understand their need to cut back on superfluous printing. I always used to see hundreds of wasted pages somebody left behind.”

There is also concern for how helpful this new process truly is.

In an effort to remain environmentally friendly, the official university website announcement from Jan. 17 stated that students should “choose double-sided (duplex) printing whenever possible. It increases your printed page allowance by 43 percent!”

Most university printers are set to include duplex printing. However, many professors do not accept papers that are double-sided. In many cases, if a student does not produce a hard copy, a professor will not accept any other form of submission.

“Conserving paper is good,” said Celina Vibert, an art and design student, “but if you’d really like us to conserve paper, then allow us to email assignments and papers.”

Student and university representatives from Office of Information Technology declined to comment.

To start off the program, Cindy Meneghin, chair of the President’s Commission on Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity and diversity, welcomed the visitors.

Meneghin said, “We came together today to recognize the university’s historic and present dedication to affirmative action.”

One of the first and most prominent guest speakers included President Susan Cole, who read the Affirmative Action Day Proclamation and introduced the other guest speakers.

Cole addressed the audience regarding bullying and recent related legislation regarding the Clemente trial based on the past events that occurred on campus at Rutgers University.

The next guest speakers were New Jersey Senator Linda Greenstein, assistant majority leader of the 14th district, and New Jersey Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle of the 37th district. Greenstein and Huttle spoke regarding various legislations that have been passed in regards to bullying in both the workplace and in schools.

“Right now, there are ways for people who are bullied at work to get help,” said Greenstein. “The type of bill that I have in mind is one where anyone who has been a victim in the workplace will be able to sue, not necessarily just one specific type of person."

Greenstein states that workplace bullying is defined as “the malicious repeated and harmful treatment of an employee, has to cause physical or psychological harm, is done by

supervisors or co-workers and can be verbal or nonverbal.”

The act that Greenstein instated is known as the “Healthy Workplace Act,” designed to allow workers who are bullied or abused in any way to receive compensation for what happened to them.

Next, Huttle spoke regarding bullying in schools. She took a piece of paper in her hands, crumpled it up and showed the room the marks left on the paper. The crumpling was meant to symbolize bullying, the marks on the paper represented the scars left from the bullies.

The act that Huttle instated provides that a school district may implement bullying prevention programs and anti-bullying training programs at no cost through various entities.

Ultimately, the guest speakers

left an impact on students who attended the program.

“I was bullied throughout my school career, high school, middle school, grade school and even to this day,” said Andrew Lopez, freshman.

“If this bill is put through, it would have a huge impact in schools and workplaces everywhere. Less people would be affected by this treatment that is horrible to a human’s physical and mental health.”

Limited hours and services available leave students unsatisfied

The Health Center's weekends may not be all students had hoped for.

Students have mixed feelings about the addition of weekend hours to the University Health Center's schedule a month after the change was implemented.

The UHC, located in Blanton Hall, has been opened on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. since Feb. 18, allowing students to access urgent care, schedule appointments and receive immunization services.

However, the services offered by the UHC on weekends are limited.

The change to the UHC's hours was part of the University's attempt to keep residents on campus on the weekends in order to change the commuter school feeling of the campus, in addition to benefitting the students.

Donna Barry, director of the UHC, was one of the proponents of the addition of weekend hours to the schedule. “This has been a work in progress for the Health Center and I think the students are responding to it very well,” Barry said.

Many students, both commuters

and residents, have mixed feelings about the change. Some students feel the changes are pointless because the Health Center is not open on Sundays and Saturday's hours are short. However, some students responded well and felt that the change is positive.

Commuter student Raymon Barrett is only on campus a few days each week, but participates in a few weekend activities. “I felt that it is a good move for MSU, but I feel that it’s not enough. If a student needs medical attention on Sundays or af-

ter 3:00 in the afternoon, they still have to find somewhere else to go.”

Ashley Nieves, resident student and community assistant of Bohn Hall, thought differently. “I am so glad that the health center at MSU is open on weekends," she said.

"Students who do get sick and need quick consolations can go to the health center instead of finding a way to get to the emergency room at the nearest hospital. I have used it once or twice already on the weekends. It is very helpful and beneficial for students.”

The Center of Student Involvement, also known as CSI, is an important department on our campus because they link students with the resources to make the most of their college experience. Last week, we featured Fatima DeCarvalho and Julie Fleming of CSI. This week, we will get a behind the scenes look at the lives of Stephanie Wright and Jillian Ploskonka.

Stephanie Wright What position do you hold in the Center of Student Involvement?

My current position is the Leadership Coordinator for Fraternities and Sororities. I am charged with overseeing the Greek Letter Organization Community at MSU which requires me to provide Hazing Prevention education, expose students to leadership development opportunities through workshops and conferences.

What is your educational/work background?

I received my BA in Communication Arts/Public Relations from Ramapo College of NJ in 2003 and my MA in Administration and Supervision from Montclair State Uni-

FEature versity in 2007. I started my career in Higher Education as a Financial Aid Assistant and worked my way up to Financial Aid Counselor in 10 months. From Financial Aid, I transitioned into Student Involvement with a focus on Leadership Development and Commuter Student Services and eventually into Greek Life after studying under MSU’s former Greek Advisor.

What factors made you want to work in this field?

Knowing I had the ability to help change students’ lives.

What advice would you give to women entering the workforce in the near future?

To always follow your dream.

What position do you hold in the Center of Student Involvement?

My current position is Coordinator of Campus Connections and Leadership Programs. It requires me to create a wide range of leadership programs through offering different opportunities to expand students’ understanding of leadership and

involvement. The Leadership Institute Certificate Program is open to all current students where advanced leadership sessions are designed in a full day conference structure. The Student Leadership Team promotes peer to peer education through involvement tables, leadership programs and offers outreach to uninvolved students.

Monthly programs include personal leadership skills discovery, organizational development, team building, understanding who you really are, tools to "carpe futura" and much more. In collaboration with the Leadership minor, we will offer the first Elite Leadership Wilderness Camp at The NJ School of Conservation. Our leadership programs are ever-changing to meet the needs of our current students and prepare them for their future careers.

What is your educational/work background?

What factors made you want to work in this field?

After my experience as a Resident Assistant, it opened my eyes to pursuing a professional position in Student Affairs. Creating a community, helping others, and designing programs made me want to continue on to a Residence Director. In my current role, I've found a stronger passion for the field by helping students gain leadership experience through promoting involvement and designing programs based on our students needs.

What advice would you give to women entering the workforce in the near future?

My advice to any student is to take every beneficial opportunity you can in order to build up your resume before you graduate. Employers are currently ranking leadership experience as the second most important element on a resume.

Make sure you have well-rounded experience including volunteer work, leadership roles, internships, specialized trainings/certifications, and some professional work experience.

Feminist Fisticuffs: Roller Derby as Active(ism) Louixsie Doyle Staff Writer

Forty years ago, Title IX first gave women access to the same college athletics as their male classmates.

Though it received initial backlash from “old boys’ club”administrators, it has become one of feminism’s most recognizable achievements.

Alternatively, roller derby enthusiasts have fought aggressively since the 1930s in a female-dominated space to create a legitimate sport of their own. Within the past few decades, roller derby has come to resemble the ultimate feminist sport.

Derby’s lurid history is far from a deal breaker for its current fan base.

Roller derby is a contact sport comprised of two five-member teams racing around a track. A game is made up of short bursts of play called “jams,” with a “jammer” lapping opposing players for points; members of her own team may assist by “whipping” her (using their own momentum to propel her forward using their arms or legs), or defensively blocking the opposing jammer through a series of maneuvers typically in accordance with the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) rule book.

Although it began as a brutally competitive sport during the Great Depression, it shifted through the years into sports entertainment. The sight of women pulling each other off the rink entirely to break into fights in hiked up skirts was sensational for mainstream audiences, and although it was a popular past time, roller derby became more about violence and voyeurism than athleticism.

Recently, a new generation of feminists and punk degenerates picked up the sport for themselves and reinvented roller derby as a third-wave feminist playground. Many players continue to don ornate costumes for jams, called “boutfits.” Perhaps one of roller derby’s most recognizable quirks is its players’ affinity for short skirts, torn tights, flashes of skin, and confrontational style; the punk movement lent an aesthetic of brutal, ironic femininity over the standard short dresses, sweaters and fashion-

ably styled hair.

Although early derby featured women who could pass as recreational skaters with a distinct lack of padding, modern derby accounts for heavy contact and requires helmets, knee/elbow pads and wrist/ mouth guards. The choice to wear outrageous outfits underneath the padding is a badge of honor players receive after pushing their physical limits through practices; by wearing short skirts and flaunting their bare and bruised legs through glimpses of neon nylon, players are not only showcasing their bodies as vessels of power, but they juxtapose their newly sculpted athletic bodies (of all sizes) with vibrant sensuality. Many players choose to make their sport about athleticism and personal and sexual expression. Derby girls (and boys) reclaim the notions of what “sexy” can or cannot be, and do so with clumsy grace.

By day, modern derby girls may be anyone from students to teachers, nurses to lawyers, librarians to artists, and everything in between.

Women who conform to 9 to 5 jobs or strict minimum wage gigs let loose after hours with their secret derby lives. Their daytime positions of conformity or subservience may be shed in favor of warriors on eight-wheels.

The joy of the double life is shown clearly through players’ choice of alter egos. Players often choose derby names that represent a fiercer version of herself, with a kitschy spin. Some consciously channel feminist heroines while others subconsciously do so through feminized versions of pop or alternative culture icons. Names like Lucy Flawless, Gloria Grindem, Susan B. Agony and Killery Clinton reference famously strong or independent feminist women. More lightheartedly, there are monikers like A Fist Called Wanda, Adrenna Lynne, Amazon Assassin, Anita Riot, Bitch Cassidy and Chrissy Fit. Between the bloodshed on the track, the mutual hits during scrimmages and the strong attitudes derby girls are known to flaunt, teammates

bond fiercely and adopt a sisterhood.

One theory states that derby girls come from an alternative lifestyle more often than not, and through their shared experiences of isolation or individualism, players find their kindred spirits on the track. Another theory claims that through especially grueling or high-contact sports, players bond through sweat and blood — which derby players share a lot of.

Derby is notorious as a full contact sport, and players frame injury as a “when” rather than “if.” They frequently show off or take pictures of their injuries as a means of celebrating their physical testaments of dedication to the sport.

Although history hasn’t been kind to derby, even questioning its legitimacy today, derby is being considered for the 2020 Olympics, much to the exultation of its devoted athletes.

Title IX dismantled the long-held misogynistic notion that women may lose their femininity (more importantly, their reproductive capabilities) through “excessive” physical exertion. Roller skates first appeared on the feet of the gentler sex in the 1890s and gave young Victorian women an opportunity to autonomously move and mingle; from that point on, women in particular developed

rapidly as agile and capable skaters.

Modern roller derby has taken a few strong strides forward by granting women a space to deny movement to others, propel themselves forward with teammates’ help and jump over obstacles for themselves. Additionally, roller derby has become known as a predominantly female sport.

As Gotham Girls Roller Derby referee and former skater for the Garden State Roller Girls, Tiger Beatdown, puts it, “Roller derby is one of the only sports in which ‘men’s’ is the qualifier.” She compares the distinction of men’s or coed derby to the more typical usage of women’s basketball or women’s soccer. For women to be perceived as the dominant athlete in almost any sport is an anomaly. Tiger Beatdown comments directly on the subversion of traditional femininity of derby. “[Derby] celebrates female athleticism, bodies of all shapes and sizes and teamwork. So much of the cultural narrative is in direct contrast to those ideals... women should be thin, quiet, domicile, dainty and should hate each other.”

Curiously, with its spilt blood of sisterhood, split personalities and tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top sexuality, roller derby may be the ultimate feminist form of active(ism).

I recently had a conversation about using water bottles, during which, over breakfast, a friend of mine leisurely said, “I think I’m going to start buying water bottles again” to which I responded, er, shrieked, “WHAT?! No, you CANNOT do that.” I’ll admit, it was way too early to be having that particular discussion, because it led to me going on about the destruction of impoverished communities, pristine habitats turned wastelands and the inability of plastic to be biodegradable (the nerve of some materials).

The conversation got real awkward real fast as I remembered that there was a time and place for everything and to save my soapbox for a more appropriate occasion.

However, it did get me thinking about a few things. One of them was my assumption that everyone knew these things were bad, which is clearly not the case, and that signals to me that the continuation of environmental education is extremely necessary in our society. Also, why would anyone pay loads of money for water bottles when you could buy a reusable one and call it a day?

Besides, water bottles are toxic, wasteful and expensive, duh. Billions of them are consumed every year despite all the facts instructing us otherwise and the alternatives that are provided, like Klean Kanteens for instance. So, what’s the hang up? I came to the semi-conclu-

sion that since we are a culture of consumers, it has become soft-wired (not hard-wired) in our brains that the easiest, cheapest and most effective method is consuming. This is totally not true.

However, the point is not to point fingers or force anyone to do something they don’t want to do. Using a reusable water bottle still requires one to go to the store and buy one.

Most environmental discussions involve blaming the human race for our over-consumption and waste, which makes us feel guilty and shameful, like my cat when she eats the dog food. If anything, it should be the other way around.

This doesn’t actually solve the problem. Mary Ann will still eat Ellie’s food even if we reprimand her, but what we should do is find out why this is happening. Maybe

Cancer, bad cholesterol, stroke, cardiovascular disease and aging are diseases that a person may encounter in his lifetime. However, the chances getting these diseases may be decreased by drinking green tea.

That’s right, green tea can halt cancer cells, prevent blood clots from forming and can reduce LDL, “bad” cholesterol, levels. This is because green tea contains powerful antioxidants called epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG. Antioxidants are substances found in our foods which can prevent or slow the production of free radicals. When an atom has an unpaired number of electrons a free radical may form. Most often, it occurs when oxygen interacts with certain molecules in the body. Free radicals are produced by the body and can come from the environment, such examples are radiation, pollution, smoking and alcohol.

When free radicals are produced they begin to react and break down DNA, proteins and the cell membrane. As a result, the cell is weakened and usually killed. This can be prevented, however, by drinking green tea.

Green tea contains the powerful antioxidant EGCG that can help stabilize the free radicals by providing them with an electron. This is crucial because reducing the amount of free radicals in the body make the body healthier. For example, a person gets wrinkles in the skin when there is a continuous exposure of free radicals.

Elastin and collagen are the two main proteins found inside the body.

These proteins are responsible for firm and smooth skin. When a person begins to age, the free radicals reduce the production of these proteins and cause the skin to wrinkle.

Thus, if antioxidants are present, this loss can be slowed or prevented.

As Dr. Lester Packer says, “Scientists now believe that free radicals are causal factors in nearly every known disease, from heart disease to arthritis to cancer to cataracts. In fact, free radicals are a major culprit in the aging process itself.”

Free radicals can be prevented by drinking green tea. Green tea is made using the leaves of a Chinese plant carnellia sinensis and has numerous beneficial factors. Green tea

we aren’t feeding her enough, maybe she doesn’t like Fancy Feast or perhaps she just prefers dog food.

The same goes for us; why don’t we find out why we keep doing things we know are bad, rather than blaming corporations, the government or the public for not taking action?

In Annie Leonard’s short yet powerful film, The Story of Stuff, she says, that “the average person now consumes more than they did twenty years ago” and that things are “designed to be as useless as quickly as possible so we will chuck it and go buy a new one.” She points out that this is evident not only in small things like coffee cups and plastic bags but with technology like computers which change at an everquickening pace, requiring you to go out and buy the latest gadget in

hopes that one new thing or several small and unnoticeable ones will have been added.

Perhaps, it is more relevant with those of you who are forced to spend hundreds of bucks on an eighth edition textbook, when the seventh is half the price and only missing one new piece of information. Our need to consume is consciously fed by producers of goods and even the government.

As Leonard quotes in her film, “That is why, after 9/11, when our country was in shock, President Bush could have suggested any number of appropriate things: to grieve, to pray, to hope. NO. He said to shop.”

This identity of consumers that we’ve been given is no coincidence, and not to sound like a conspiracy theorist or anything, but it is encouraged by our own government… and definitely aliens. I can write about our attachment to our “things” and the need to cut back and question that desire to consume until I’m blue in the face. Yet, the truth is that big and drastic changes most likely won’t be made, and believe me, the irony of me typing this on my laptop instead of writing it with a recycled pencil on recycled paper by candlelight does not escape me. So, for now, I encourage you to simply think about your daily habits, and try to cut back on things you don’t necessarily use or need. It will help our society, the environment and your wallet reach a better place in the long run.

lowers the risk of cancer, eases pain of rheumatoid arthritis, can prevent cardiovascular disease, stabilizes cholesterol levels, boosts the immune system, helps fight obesity, reduces tooth decay, slows the onset of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, fights the allergies in the body and shockingly helps prevent infections, including the HIV virus.

However, it is too early to say that green tea is the cure for HIV/AIDS. Therefore, it is vital that we drink green tea and eat fruits and vegetables that contain antioxidants.

Antioxidants can help decrease the amount of free radicals but cannot eliminate all of them. Furthermore, the body can produce its own antioxidants; however, since we are exposed to numerous free radicals, from the sun, stress and pollution our body needs a sufficient amount to decrease free radicals. In other words, the body cannot produce enough antioxidants to fight off all the free radicals, and hence it is necessary to drink green tea and provide the body with a large amount of antioxidants.

With further research and understanding of free radicals more people can live past 100 years and there might be less cases of cancer.

Because according to Dr. Richard Cutler, “The amount of antioxidants in your body is directly proportional to how long you will live.”

Coffee was said to be discovered in the Ethiopian highlands by a herd of goats! This created the legend of Kaldi, a man who noticed that his goats became energetic after eating berries from a certain tree.

After this discovery the berries were turned into a drink, which started the spread of coffee that eventually reached around the globe.

Caffeine works in an ingenious way. A chemical called Adenosine slows the interaction between nerve cells, helping prepare our bodies for sleep. The reason caffeine works is because the receptors on our brain cells cannot distinguish between caffeine and adenosine. When caffeine is consumed, it takes the place of many adenosine molecules, causing the brain activity to perk up instead of slow down. Caffeine also raises the level of dopamine in the brain, also known as the feel good chemical. This explains its addictive quality.

As you know coffee is not the only drink with caffeine; sodas, energy drinks and teas only name a few. Caffeine is the most popular drug in the world. Ninety percent of Americans consume it in some form every day.

There are pros and cons to everything in life, this includes drinking coffee. Starting with the pros, people who drink coffee on a regular basis have a lower risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. This disease starts out causing uncontrolled trembling and in severe cases can disable one’s ability to walk. The disease is caused by the loss of brain cells which caffeine is known to protect.

The dosage that works is 100 to 200 milligrams of caffeine a day, which equals one to two cups of coffee.

Regular coffee drinkers also have a 20 percent lower risk of developing Gallstones. The reason may be because caffeine induces contractions in the gallbladder, which empties it of stone forming agents like cholesterol more often.

Most college students get coffee or some caffeinated drink early in the morning to wake up. This action is backed up by evidence that caf-

feine improves mental alertness as well as reaction time. Caffeine can also relieve minor headaches and temporarily raise a person’s metabolism and can help a person burn, on average, an extra 100 calories a day.

One does not normally lose weight by drinking coffee because as a person builds up tolerance to caffeine the long-term effects wear off.

Some negative effects of caffeine can be seen in the effect of caffeine on mental alertness. Although shortterm effects of caffeine are positive for mental performance, long term effects of caffeine on memory and reasoning are non-existent.

Although caffeine’s ability to reverse the effects of alcohol may be seen as a good thing, the mixing of caffeine and alcohol makes people think they are fine when in reality their reaction time is still just as bad.

Caffeine is also very addictive, after a week of consuming caffeine everyday most people will experience headaches, fatigue and decreased alertness if they stop abruptly. If you want to prevent these symptoms and cut back coffee, you can gradually decrease the amount of coffee you drink.

Coffee and caffeine are very bad in regards to osteoporosis. For every six ounces of coffee you drink you have the potential to loose five milligrams of calcium from your bones.

Adding two tablespoons of milk to coffee can solve this problem.

Caffeine also increases the symptoms of PMS and should not be taken during a female’s menstrual cycle. Caffeine is also very bad for couples trying to conceive because it reduces the chance of conception. A 16 oz coffee a day can decrease the chance of conception by 27 percent, but should never be used as a form of birth control. Caffeine can also increase blood pressure while consumption lasts.

Most experts agree that moderate consumption of caffeine is the key. Listening to your body is a great way to see what is too much. Caffeine should never be the crutch that lets you stay up all night. Getting a good night’s sleep is very important.

To get the benefits and also steer clear of the negative consequences of caffeine, moderation is the only way.

And Justice for Some...

e don’t know whether there has been a significant increase in bullying in America or if it just has just received quite a lot of press over the recent months, but one thing’s for sure: We’re hungry for blood.

The verdict is in on Dharun Ravi, the 20-year-old Rutgers student who was charged with invasion of privacy and tampering with evidence after secretly filming one of his freshman roommate’s romantic encounters and hosting a private live screening for some of his fellow classmates. Well, Ravi, it doesn’t look hopeful.

Ravi’s actions were deplorable, the authenticity of his theft-prevention motives still questionable and the timing of what he claims to be a lapse of judgment terribly unlucky.

There is no excuse that could justify the clandestine voyeurism that took place in September of 2010 and certainly not the later exploitation of its content, but Dharun Ravi, sentenced on Friday to 10 or more years in prison and possible deportation to his birthplace of India, may have gotten himself caught up in something bigger than any one criminal offense.

Every once in a while, stories like the one of Tyler Clementi come along to remind us that bullying is not a lost art and bullies did not go extinct after we graduate from high school.

Barely out of high school, still adjusting to a new environment and newfound freedom, vulnerable and scared as he searches for new friends. We all know the feeling.

Now add to the equation that Mr. Clementi was gay and what was once a simple invasion of privacy charge becomes a bias incident. This case also happened on the coattails of a string of suicides of other young teenagers around the country who were bullied because they were gay or perceived to be gay.

The actions of Mr. Ravi and their unforeseeable effects are unforgiveable but to turn a 20-year-old with no previous criminal record into a scapegoat for the bullied LGBTQ community seems like a punishment unfit for the crime.

These hate crime laws have been put in place to protect vulnerable communities from predators and other individuals with violent intentions not as a vantage point from which to increase the punishment on mean-spirited deeds.

Our culture has become hyper-sensitive to the bullying problem but that vigilance should not be attributed to the pursuit of condemnation but rather to the continued safety and security of those silenced minorities.

This is a case of unintended, misdirected, immature homophobia with a terrible outcome but cyber-crime and punishment are still generally new and there is still much to understand about the difference between physical and virtual crime.

Needless to say there will be plenty more good kids with stupid ideas committing online crimes before these kinks get worked out and we must be careful not to throw away their lives as the result of our own misunderstanding.

The First in a Long Series of Complaints Is the movie industry creating franchises out of thin air?

I

f Jerry Seinfeld were still a performing comedian, I’m sure one of his current jokes would start, “But seriously, what’s the deal with Travis Lancaster these movie franchises?” columnist So, let me ask you, readers: Seriously, what is the deal with movie franchises?

Now I’m sure more than half of you — and this may be an understatement — are thinking, “Hey, Travis, what’s your problem? I loved the Harry Potter series!”

And I’m sure you all read the books first, okay, I get it; look at the developing trend of successful book series being made into movie franchises.

In the past decade, we’ve seen the release of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Harry Potter octalogy, the pentalogical Twilight and now, the latest book series to be formatted for the big screen, The Hunger Games.

Personally, I haven’t read The Hunger

Games and if I’m being honest, I’m not that interested in doing so, either. To me, it’s just the latest craze to take the literary world — and I suppose at midnight on March 23, the film world — by storm.

But this isn’t a criticism of the quality of an adult fiction series or its potential for film adaptation. It’s the ever-increasingly apparent superficiality of forcing the creation of a franchise that makes me uneasy — a sobering glimpse into the flash in the pan future of our culture.

Movie franchises are becoming more and more prevalent in society these days, and it’s no surprise why: The Harry Potter movies brought in $900 million per movie worldwide (almost $8 billion overall), Lord of the Rings followed close by with almost $1 billion per movie and Twilight around $500 million.

Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people worldwide — whether they have the money or not — pay top dollar to see the films and then in turn buy the commemorative T-shirt, soft drink cup and visit the amusement park.

For individuals who don’t exactly buy into these “crazes,” such as myself, it just raises questions about the integrity of the modern film industry.

Take the Lord of the Rings trilogy, for

instance: the three novels were published over the course of a year, from 1954 to 1955.

It wasn’t until 2001 that this masterful trilogy was turned into one of the most ambitious film projects ever undertaken.

Before that — save for a 133-minute animated film made in 1978 — no one had even considered turning the third bestselling novel ever written into a movie franchise. Classic directors didn’t even dream of making movie franchises.

Maybe it’s just the sign of our times that we need to constantly stimulate ourselves with new chapters, add-ons, bonus content and spin-offs following characters that we just can’t let go of.

For me, it raises questions about the authors and directors of the future.

With these high-grossing movie franchises to contend with, what will it mean for the individual futures of the literature and film worlds?

Will all of the authors and directors of the future sacrifice genuine auteurial intent for tried and true stories just to be able to write the next most popular book/ movie franchise of the year?

Will the integrity of the novel, or of the film, suffer even more than it already has in recent times now that it has become

painfully clear that obeying supply and demand in the fiction world produces far more capital than the limited release indie?

I certainly hope not, but it’s difficult to be sure of in these uncertain times; everything is truly about money these days.

With the recent announcement of the Hunger Games movie franchise, I just begin to wonder about the motives of the film industry; are they just trying to milk another cash cow of a series?

To me, it appears that way, although I’m sure there are several Hollywood bigwigs who truly believe it will make a great movie franchise.

I really shouldn’t sit here lambasting the successful efforts of the film industry suits who are just trying to make money that will then go back into the production of more movies. After all, isn’t the entire point of the film industry to make money?

I just worry — as I’m sure many true cinephiles and bibliophiles do — about the future of these once beautiful and creative industries.

Trayvon Martin’s Death Unecessary and Shameful Racially-charged hate crimes are still a disturbing reality

E

arly last week a very devastating headline flashed across news websites, newspapers and televisions all over the country.

It had been Sekinah Brodie reported that columnist a 17-year-old from Florida, named Trayvon Martin had been shot and killed in a gated community, by the “selfappointed” neighborhood watch captain, George Zimmerman.

Following the initial surprise of reading the headline, anybody’s immediate reaction would be “why?”

What could this boy have possibly done to this 28-year-old man? According to Zimmerman, Trayvon looked suspicious.

Now you may be wondering, is George Zimmerman a detective, FBI agent or retired police officer? No. In fact, he comes off as an overzealous resident with too much time on his hands.

This just gives more fuel to the fact

that Trayvon was unfairly and unjustly targeted by someone who has no authority whatsoever.

Here you have a kid, visiting his father in the neighborhood, walking back from the store with a pack of skittles and an iced tea, and the next thing you know he is being followed, chased, confronted and shot dead.

The worst part of it all is that Zimmerman was instructed by police NOT to follow or confront Trayvon, and against their wishes he did just the opposite.

Multiple witnesses made 9-1-1 calls after a scuffle ensued between the young boy and the older man. In the chilling 9-1-1 calls, you could hear screams of “Help!” said to be Trayvon yelling for assistance.

The natural inclination of any sane person reading or hearing about this unfortunate event would be to conclude that this was a racially charged hate crime.

Honestly, it’s hard to argue against that when everything Zimmerman did and said shows that he was not pinpointing Trayvon for any real reason. He was walking down the street with a hooded sweatshirt on his head, so I guess that would make him a suspicious criminal.

Zimmerman claims he shot Trayvon out of self-defense, which sounds like a cop out for somebody that had absolutely

no right to go after an innocent teenager who was simply minding his business.

In Zimmerman’s mind, Trayvon did not belong. But if he was visiting his father in the neighborhood, a gated neighborhood, isn’t it only obvious that someone had to let him into the community?

The biggest question at hand is why was Trayvon’s murderer not immediately arrested after authorities found out what had occurred? Is the Sanford Police Department trying to protect or hide something from the public? Maybe, the case is not at the top of their priority list because the victim is black.

It is unfortunate that race is always the matter behind these situations but the proof is in the pudding. African Americans are seemingly always targeted before any other race.

“Driving while black” is a very real thing, along with the stop and frisk policy that seems to leave minorities with the short end of the stick. These two examples show how much race relations have taken steps back over the past decades.

Though we have made strides, discrimination, prejudice and racism will still be around for all groups, not just African Americans.

This case will be a very pivotal race relations case now that Trayvon’s family

has garnered so much support from the community and civil rights activists to gain justice for the untimely death of their young son.

No matter how many times you review the facts, Zimmerman was wrong for assuming, following and confronting Trayvon without any probable cause that he was a threat. And for that, he should be punished and sentenced just like any other criminal.

The police department also dismisses the fact that Zimmerman has a record with a charge of assaulting a police officer, yet he is permitted to wield a firearm carelessly throughout the neighborhood, shooting at the first person who he felt was not supposed to be there.

A sad ending to what should have been a bright future for a young kid. In time, I hope that Trayvon’s parents, family and friends receive justice and peace of mind, and George Zimmerman is charged appropriately. We are not given the right to decide who lives or dies, and to see someone begging for their life and still shoot them in the chest is the most devastating part. A change has to happen but will not happen until we change ourselves.

A New Search for the Famous Lost Aviator Amelia Earhart’s 75-year legacy will not soon be forgotten

M

ost of us are at least vaguely familiar with the tragic tale of Amelia Earhart, the noteworthy pioneer in aviation and a model for equality amongst the Alexa coppola ASst. Opinion Editor sexes.

She was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean without accompaniment, and received a Distinguished Flying Cross for this accomplishment.

In addition to this, she set a number of aviation records and published a myriad of books concerning the subject of flight.

For a woman of the early twentieth century, she really made herself stand out in a dominantly male environment.

This stellar career came to an abrupt

end when Earhart mysteriously disappeared during a flight that was supposed to circumnavigate the globe.

However, recently, experts have been able to closely examine some photographs of Earhart’s plane, and believe that they may be able to determine where her plane went down.

This sparked an interest by explorers to begin a new search for Earhart or remnants of her Electra.

She was attempting to circle the Earth with Fred Noonan, a fellow aviation expert, navigator and sea captain. In July of 1937, their plane vanished somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. Her last radio transmission was logged in at 8:43 a.m. while they were approaching Howland Island, and that was the last evidence of Earhart and Noonan.

The two were attempting to land on the island and in radio transmissions had claimed that they identified the flat bit of land lying in the Pacific, but these last few messages are considered questionable con-

sidering the fact that the pair never made it successfully.

Efforts to find the two aviators began one hour after her last radio signals, and the area being searched was based on the location of the radio signals that Earhart and Noonan were sending. The search was conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard and they were soon joined by the U.S. Navy.

Searches for the aviators were conducted throughout the area north and westward of Howard Island, which it was presumed that they were flying through, and then expanded to areas south and east, both on surrounding islands and under the sea.

Since this tragic event in 1937, more searches have been conducted and theories speculated upon, but nothing has proven to explain the very odd disappearance of Amelia Earhart.

The search will begin in July and will be conducted around the island of Nikumaroro, a part of the island nation of

Kiribati. The evidence to support this new search is viewed by experts as circumstantial but strong, giving fans and admirers of the heroine new hope.

I’m sure that there isn’t a great deal of anticipation for any significant artifacts from the expedition to be uncovered but July will also mark the 75th year since Earhart’s disappearance. This is practically a lifetime of optimism with pretty much zero motive.

Though, there are some key factors to consider about this new search. For one, advising the team of explorers is Robert Ballard, the oceanographer who discovered the remnants of the Titanic.

He also believes that the photographs make it possible for the search to be reduced from tens of thousands of miles to a much smaller area. The evidence is mildly encouraging but is certainly accompanied by doubt from spectators.

Don’t criticize journalism until you actually do it yourself

It’s there where web editor you have a fascination of trying to tell other people how to do their job. Just how I copied and pasted this piece because that’s the sort of journalist I am, but wait until the end to comment.

Don’t shoot the middleman.

After attending a College Media Association conference in New York City the last few days listening to journalists, photographers, advertisers, poets and fiction writers speak to their fields, that was the only thing I could think about.

One more thing – courtship and romance is no harder now than it was 50 years ago. Being cheated on or regretting sex isn’t learning lessons the hard way – it’s life. It

It’s an odd paranoia as I’ve started working that seems to resonate into everyone’s head as a manifested malice — journalists are out to get you. This theory is spoon-fed and bred in the same way as the theory it criticizes.

There isn’t a press release for a town council meeting, although I wish there was one because they are dreadfully boring.

I say again, don’t shoot the middleman.

It’s easy to yell into the void about how we copy and paste but we all have a face just like you. We don’t just create but cover creation. It is not our job to make the news but report the news — hence reporters.

And I do not advocate blind faith following of any news because there are always instances of irresponsible issues.

Journalists have taken the social role of lawyers — we now have our own place in hell.

I wouldn’t tell a doctor my theory for a technique on open bi-pass surgery. So why do people think they can tell journalist how to do their jobs?

Question everything but read something or do something.

Don’t just yell into the void. I hate to break it to you, but everything you write, as common complaints is just as subjective as your counterpart’s.

Educate yourselves on what you are talking about because even if you have valid points you sound like whiney children no matter how old you are.

Write one article then you can comment on this and see if every journalist just copies and pastes.

Underground Radio Keeps Rockin’ or Rollin’ WMSC is Montclair’s hidden musical treasure

Deep within the Student Center not only lie places to buy textbooks and sushi but the home of our own college radio station, WMSC at 90.3 FM. The organization is one of the last student-run college radio stations, but don’t be fooled!

The professional and innovative minds underground deliver a vibrant wave of music that encompasses an abundance of genres to satisfy a variety of musical interests. The driven folks at WMSC run a professional yet laid back station that runs like a well-oiled machine and the refreshing combination of music along with the work of our talent-

ed DJs are what make Montclair State’s radio station something to be proud of.

Although all are welcome to sign up for the program, aspiring DJs must first follow in the footsteps of one of the current members of the station as a baby DJ. Baby DJs learn all of the ins and outs of working at the radio station in hopes of someday having their own show on the station, creating their own playlists and sharing their musical perspectives with their fellow MSU listeners.

Matt Komar, musical director and DJ of his own radio station, has been working for the radio since his freshman year at MSU and is now in charge of finding new music for the rotation of all of the station’s shows.

The radio station primarily plays music from bands who are signed to independent record labels, helping to unearth undiscovered talent and to expand the tastes of the student population.

Komar’s show, which airs on Thursday, blasts electro-indie pop from 4 to 7 p.m. Other DJs with music and talk shows on the station include DJ Dell, on Tuesdays from 1 to 4 p.m with “Mind the Gap Radio,” DJ Rich Liptak’s Peep Show on Thursday nights from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m, and the master mixes of DJ Dee on Tuesday nights from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Perhaps the oldest member of the WMSC is Bird Holmes, or DJ Bird, whose soulful 60s and 70s mixes entertain listeners on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1p.m.,

Mondays from 7 am to 10 a.m. and Wednesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. DJ Bird loves his work and thoroughly enjoys bestowing listeners with his “romantically, ridiculously funky, make-you-wet-andsquishy 70s music stuff.”

Bird brings a laid-back, effortless attitude with his smooth, deep voice, colorful collection of tunes and entertaining banter that can only be described with one word: cool. With his extensive experience in the music industry, Bird shares his incredible stories and life experiences in such vivid and accurate detail with a comfortable tone that makes you feel like you could have been there with him.

A former NFL athlete, Holmes went from tossing the pigskin with the Browns, Jets and Steelers to tackling the music industry full force as a producer and manager for acts like Gil Scott-Heron, Musique and Push Push in the Bush.

He eventually moved on to work for Def Jam records, working with such notable artists as Earth Wind and Fire, Luther Vandross, The O’Jays and Phyliss Hyman.

Holmes was even able to use his connections to help many MSU students who were aspiring young musicians, producers and DJs find jobs and paid internships. When asked if he had any advice for the baby DJs or other hopefuls wishing to make it in the music in-

dustry, Bird says, “Go for it.

And don’t listen to folks that tell you that you have no place to be. This is the only industry I know of that fills a void. But you don’t want to be like Whitney Houston or James Brown, filling that void with things that are no good for you and ruin your opportunities. But there’s room for everyone in the music industry, as long as you play smart and always think about how to figure out what the industry wants.”

DJ Bird, along with the other DJs at WMSC create a vivid array of thoughts and sounds which broadcast culture and creativity to listeners all over MSU. Our station, however, does not get the recognition it deserves.

With all of the effort that goes into running this station, WMSC should have listeners around the clock.

So whenever you’re feeling bored or could just use some new music as you plow through a day of essay writing or equation solving, why not tune into channel 90.3 and see what new sounds and ideas are

Classic Crime Drama Gets Comedic Facelift 21 Jump Street delivers laughs and cops David Acosta Staff Writer

21 Jump Street began as an 80s crime drama television series which brought actor Johnny Depp to the public eye so when a comedic modern day film based on the classic series starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum was announced, it just seemed a bit, well, odd. However, skeptics and fans were pleasantly surprised by the end result.

21 Jump Street is about two young rookie police officers, Morton Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Greg Jenko (Channing Tatum). They attended high school together and are now partners who are being transferred to a “revival of an old 80’s program” after failing to read a suspect his Miranda rights. The old program takes officers who look young and plant them in high schools to investigate and bring down crimes. Schmidt and Jenko’s assignment is to investigate a new synthetic drug that a student had recently overdosed on. In the last month of the school year, the two rookie cops are forced to infiltrate the dealers and bring down the supplier of the drug under the watch of their boss, Captain Dickson (Ice Cube).

Hill and Tatum may not seem like a typical on-screenduo, but their performances

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum keep the laughs coming. and chemistry are executed perfectly thanks to a well written script, good direction and the antics and acting of the two themselves.

The scenes in the beginning of the film have what seem to be sudden transitions and some rushing to get to the main plot, but once it arrives, it is smooth sailing and laughs until the very end. Ice Cube’s performance as the intimidating and extremely angry Captain Dickson was

one of the finest performances in the film. The ensemble of the film, which includes The Office’s Ellie Kemper, Comedian Rob Riggle, James Franco’s younger brother Dave and United States of Tara’s Brie Larson, all put in one thousand percent to their roles, presenting likeable and well-crafted characters.

Although at first glance, it may seem just a goofy comedy, the film is actually incredibly smart by adding

little details that may not be initially noticeable such as gym teacher, Mr. Walters (Rob Riggle) and his constant eating of Doritos.

Fans of the original series will not leave disappointed because there are many references to the show (and even a couple of cameos).

I had an incredibly great time watching this film and laughed harder during this than any other comedy I’ve seen in a while. 21 Jump

Street blends action, comedy consisting of intelligent meta-humor, smart dialogue and goofy jokes, an enjoyable story, likeable characters, great performances and pure fun in a well-executed film.

Top Poets to Slam California in April

MSU’s slam poetry team will go on to compete in California next month.

The five members of MSU’s slam poetry team were chosen Thursday night.

The poetry team will be competing in CUPSI (College and University Poetry Slam Invitational) from April 18-22, in Laverne, California.

There have been four Sacrificial Poetry events since September, all coming down to the Grand Slam event. The top two winners from each of the Sacrificial Poetry events battled it out on stage in the Student Center ballrooms.

The top eight poets who competed were Timothy DuWhite, Tylik Railey, Imani Shaw, Lamar Washington, Elle Musiwa, Sherlita McCann, Christopher Rodriguez and Liz Hammonds.

The Poetry Grand Slam was Speaking Through Silence’s biggest event of the year.

Symone Bailey, a senior and the publicity chair for STS, said, “We’re expecting a pretty big crowd tonight. We usually get about 100 at the other events, and we’re definitely expecting more than that.”

Bailey said, to publicize the event, the main form of advertising was word of mouth.

They

also used a Facebook event, mass messaging and flyers on campus.

The Grand Slam consisted of three rounds of slam poetry. After the second round one contestant was eliminated, and after the third round the top five were announced.

Poem topics consisted of family, disease, religion, reflection, poetry itself, slavery, love, dreams, nightmares, sin, school and friends.

The winners of the event, granting them a place on the MSU team, were Timothy DuWhite (who earned himself a perfect score after the three rounds), Tylik Railey, Elle Musiwa, Christopher Rodriguez and Liz Hammonds.

Softball Starts Off Season with a Bang

The Red Hawks are off to an outstanding start so far after going a perfect 9-0 at the Rebel Spring Games down in Kissimmee, Fla. last week.

The softball team couldn’t have asked for a better start to their season. In the nine games that have been played, the Red Hawks have outscored their opponents 38-11.

After having their games against Endicott College and Wheaton College postponed, the Red Hawks started the week against McDaniel College on March 12. The Red Hawks won 4-1 after eight innings in what would end up being largely a defense battle between sophomore pitcher Alex Hill and McDaniel pitcher Caroline Brehm.

The two combined for an unprecedented three hits, four walks and 26 strikeouts. These two pitching powerhouses did not allow a single hit until the eighth inning. What would end up being Brehm’s downfall is that the four walks all belonged to her. In the top of the eighth, with junior infielder Jamie Paulino on second, Hill grounded out, advancing Paulino to third.

Following the walk, junior catcher Heather Bergman was walked, followed by a ground out by sophmore infielder Katie Muglia, advancing Bergman to second while Paulino stayed on third. Brehm then walked senior outfielder Stephanie Szeliga to make the bases loaded.

Brehm put McDaniel in a tough spot when she walked in the first run of the game right before giving up a three-run RBI double to sophomore infielder Alisha Cum-

berton to make it a 4-0 game.

After McDaniel finially left the field, they were only able to record one run on a sacrifice fly before Hill ended the game with her tenth strikeout.

Their next game was against Washington College. The Red Hawks won a 2-0 contest, thanks to smart batting and equally consistent pitching. Junior Pitcher picked up the win with three strikeouts while Hill came in and closed out the game for the save with two strikeouts.

With the game tied at 0-0 going into the bottom of the sixth, the Red Hawks knew that they were running out of time to win the game. With one out, Bergman got to first on a single to right field. Junior Kelli O’Brien got on base due to a fielder’s choice and advanced to Bergman to second before sophomore infielder Dana Amato walked to make the bases loaded.

Paulino broke the tie and made it 1-0 thanks to a sacrifice fly to deep right field. Muglie then drove in O’Brien with a single to right center. After another clutch performance in the batter’s box, Hill closed out the game with two strikouts to give Montclair State a 2-0 record.

Their third game against Utica College was their most productive offense game out of the three.

The team totaled 10 hits while Hill dominated the mound for her second win after striking out eight batters and allowing only three hits.

Bergman, Amato, Paulino and freshman infielder Tara Petrucelli drove in the five runs that lead the Red Hawks to their third straight win.

MSU continued to shine in its game against Roger Williams University. Although the Red Hawks recorded eight hits, they only won 2-0.

Hill, once again, made batters shake

in their cleats by throwing another 12 strikeouts while Petrucelli and Paulino both drove in one run each.

Where many teams would start to tire, the Red Hawks did the exact opposite. MSU came off the win over Roger Williams and routed Daniel Webster College in a five-inning, 11-0 shutout.

Miller recorded her second win of the season after striking out six batters and allowing four hits in 4.1 innings.

On the other side of the ball, the entire team helped. Seniors Shannon Mozek and Priscilla Camacho along with Cumberton, Petrucelli, Szeliga and Amato drove in the 11 runs, nine of which came in the third inning.

The biggest play came with the Red Hawks up 1-0 in the top of the third. With Petrucelli, Cumberton and Mozek all on base, Amato blasted a grand slam over the left field wall to give the Red Hawks all the momentum they would need to finish the game.

Following the offensive extravaganza, MSU went up against Illinois’ Wesleyan University. Hill picked up her fourth win of the season with four strikeouts and six hits. Amato almost immediately gave the Red Hawks an advantage by driving a two-run blast over the wall in right center. The Red Hawks were able to hold the lead for the remainder of the game and walked off the field with their sixth straight win of the season for a 6-0 start.

After going several games without much stress, the Red Hawks couldn’t have had a more stressful final three games of the week. MSU won all three of its last three games by only one run.

Their next two games against Defiance College and Millikin University were not as exciting as their previous few. In the game against Defiance, both teams combined for only seven hits and one run while both pitch-

ers only recorded two strikeouts.

The game’s only run came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Muglia was on first base when Camacho was walked to advance her into scoring position. With two outs, Mozek hit a double down the left field line to drive in Muglia and send Camacho to third. Unfortunately for MSU, Paulino hit a fly ball to right field for the third out and ended the inning with two possible runs left on base. Thankfully, a solid defense would help MSU hold on to that one run lead and win the game.

Just like the game before, the game against Millikin was all defense. Once again, Hill only allowed three hits while striking out nine batters for her fifth win of the year.

The game look as though it was going to be more exciting in the first inning. The Red Hawks got off to a quick lead thanks to an RBI single

In their last game of the week, the offense got back into rhythm, but so did Saint Norbert College.

Eight different players from MSU and six players from St. Norbert touched home plate in a 9-8 win for the Red Hawks. Miller pitched five innings but sophomore pitcher Briana Rossi recorded the win.

The Red Hawks’ next seven games will be at home, starting with a game against DeSales University on March 22 at 3 p.m.

Peyton Manning Officially a Bronco But what about Tim Tebow?

Peyton Manning purges the Denver Broncos of their biggest problem, Tim Tebow.

The future Hall of Fame quarterback recently finished the biggest free agent circus since Joe Montana signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1994 and is already being hailed as the newest savior for the franchise, but Manning might not be durable enough to keep those wings around his neck. If Tebow was able to produce miracles, then he is certainly capable of cursing the Broncos franchise for years to come.

Tebow sells tickets, generates positive energy within the organization and, most importantly for the Broncos business, he makes money. The problem is that Tebow is not a good quarterback.

John Elway, former quarterback-turned-executive vice president of the Broncos, wanted to get rid of Tebow in the worst possible way. He knew the unconventional quarterback wasn’t what he was looking for when he envisioned the franchise being rebuilt, even when he declared Tebow the starting quarterback heading into next season after the Broncos were eliminated from the playoffs. He had to say all the right things because he didn’t want the fans to revolt.

A legend in his own right, Elway is the name that comes to mind when one mentions the Broncos, but fans adored Tebow and would have gone crazy if Elway gave up on him for any reason other than this one. The only thing that could have made Tebow’s departure a smooth process was a stellar, Hall

of Fame-caliber quarterback. Peyton Manning is the perfect excuse.

I haven’t heard one complaint about Manning signing in Denver. Some people claim his contract is absurd, but what should be pointed out is that only the first year of his contract is guaranteed.

If the Broncos wish to cut Manning at any point this season or in the off-season, they would only be accountable for $18 million and not the $96 million he’s due to receive over the course of his five-year contract.

It’s a lot of money on a quarterback who might be injured for the entire season or may not live up to expectations since his arm isn’t at full strength, but the amount of money and positive media attention the Broncos will be receiving for getting Manning are more than enough reasons to sign Peyton to such a wealthy contract.

Tebow brought attention to the Broncos, but some, if not most of it was for reasons other than football and, although he is considered to be a righteous person, he creates such a controversy and is a distraction for the team.

If Manning can play close to his old form, Denver will be an instant favorite to go deep in the playoffs, partially because their division, the AFC West, is atrocious and partly because the Broncos are a solid team that now has a once-in-a-generation quarterback. This is a very good move for the Broncos, although I’m not so sure it’s the same for Manning. Denver can have some pretty cold springs and possibly unbearable winters. Maybe he wanted to ensure there was a Manning in each conference, though in reality, Peyton inferred that he

Are you surprised Andy Pettitte is back with the Yankees?

I am very surprised to see Petitte back with the Yanks. He is a great pitcher, but whether or not he still has what it takes to pitch in this division remains to be seen. Many players in all sports have returned from retirement in the past and we have seen some reputations take a hit following an unsuccessful return, so Petitte will be under some pressure. Nobody knows Petitte as well as he knows himself, so if he feels that he is ready to compete in the majors once again, he is making the right decision.

I am very surprised that he is back. I tend to assume that when players retire, they plan on staying retired. That’s the difference between retiring and taking a break. I am, however, glad that he is back. Pettitte has always been a great pitcher and, hopefully, has not lost any of his presence on the mound. Whether I am happy or sad or surprised or not about his decision to come back, all I hope is that the Yankees don’t go through the same drama and trouble that the Vikings, Jets and Packers had to go through for Brett Favre.

Yes and no. I’m shocked that he’s back in spring training as a player. Once he retired I thought that was the last we would have seen or heard from Pettitte for a long time. But when baseball (or anything) is all you have ever done in your life, it’s hard to just give it up, especially when you still have the skills to continue. Once he’s too old, he won’t have a chance to come back at all. If someone is willing to give him a chance and he is still able to play, then why not go for it? You only live once.

Who’s Hot This Week Sean Hille Starting pitcher — Baseball Hille led the Red Hawks to 4-0 victory against firstranked Marietta in the Snowbird Classic. He threw a three-hit shutout for MSU’s first win against the Pioneers since 2006. Hille had nine strikeouts to accompany with five walks in MSU’s most complete and dominant pitching performance this season.

Hill’s ERA so far this season is 0.00. She recorded a save in the Red Hawks’ second game of the season against Washington (MD).

Hawks Fly South for Snowbird Classic MSU look to extend win streak to four games Jeff Onorato Staff Writer

The first in the seven-game stretch saw the Montclair State take on Baldwin-Wallace College. Kevin Bond and Matt Moreno each drove in an RBI in the bottom of the first, but that would be all the Red Hawks delivered in the 9-2 loss to begin the trip to Florida.

Pitcher Sean Hille went five innings, giving up three runs in his first loss of the season, evening his record to 1-1.

The game remained a close one until Baldwin-Wallace stung the Red Hawks with five runs in the top of the eighth, setting MSU back at 2-2 for the season.

Looking to bounce back from the defeat, game two against Heidelberg did not end in victory for MSU. Pitcher Dylan Papa took the loss in the 8-6 defeat, but the offense showed signs of a comeback in a game that by the seventh inning was 8-1. Catcher Scott Glozzy was four for four on the day, driving in three runs, with teammates Moreno, Jason Chesterman and Connor Abreu each getting an RBI as MSU fell short of winning their first game in Port Charlotte.

Ohio Wesleyan University handed MSU their third consecutive loss the next day in a 14-10 upset, with reliever Matt Canales receiving the L for his record. MSU held a lead from the first inning, putting up three runs when Stephen Nappe doubled in two and scored after Moreno drove him in. Nappe continued to deliver in the bottom of the fifth when he hit a three-run homer giving him five RBIs for the day.

The Red Hawks gave up the lead late in the game, as Wesleyan put up seven runs to make the score 12-6. MSU answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, but it wasn’t enough to let them begin to enjoy the sunshine.

The bad news continued as MSU fell to 2-5 on the season after a 12-2 defeat

Pitcher Travis Della Volpe had a rough outing, giving up 11 runs in only four innings, amounting to his second loss this season. Bond had an RBI double in the seventh, but that is all MSU’s bats had to offer.

Florida wasn’t looking so great by the fifth game on the trip, but the Red Hawks finally had something to smile about when they snapped a four-game losing streak in their 8-5 win over The College of Wooster.

Zach Brown pitched seven innings, earning his first win this year. The game was tied at 5 until the top of the seventh, when Glozzy singled in Moreno to give them the lead. Moreno drove in two runs the next inning, giving him four RBIs in his three-for-four day at the plate.

Senior Jake Campbell pitched the last two innings, securing the victory in his first save this season.

In their second matchup against top-ranked Marietta College in the Snowbird Classic, the Red Hawks evened things up as Hille threw a shutout in their second straight win. MSU scored three runs in the bottom of the second, but that was plenty for Hille, who allowed only three hits and struck out and impressive nine from the Pioneer offense. Sophomore second-baseman Juan Perdomo Jr. had two hits and a RBI in MSU’s fourth win of 2012.

In the final game of the Snowbird Classic, MSU ended on a high note as they took the victory over Denison University, 6-5. The Red Hawks were down by a run in the bottom of

the ninth as senior outfielder Mickey McGraw tripled in the tying run.

Tied at five, the game went to extra innings, where McGraw had yet another shot to win it for Montclair.

In the eleventh inning, runners were on first and second when McGraw singled to right center, giving the Red Hawks something to celebrate. In the sixth inning, junior outfielder Anthony Bowens and Perdomo were both hit by pitches with the bases loaded, which put MSU closer to their comeback at 5-4.

Senior Jack McDonough pitched two scoreless in the extras, getting the victory. The walk-off win brought MSU even to 5-5 on the season. The Red Hawks next game will be against Muskingum College on Friday, March 23.

Rocky Start for Men’s Lacrosse

MSU drops to 1-5 after loss to Stevens Nick Patriarca Assistant Sports Editor

The Montclair State men’s lacrosse team fell to 0-4 with an 8-7 loss to St. Lawrence University on March 10, but rebounded with a 15-7 win over Manhattanville College on March 17. This marks the Red Hawks’ first victory of the season, and Chris Kivlen’s first as head coach.

Senior Tyler Meth led the effort in the loss to St. Lawrence, scoring four goals, three of which came in the second quarter, sending the Red Hawks into halftime with a 5-4 lead. Meth gave the Red Hawks a two-goal lead with his fourth goal early in the third quarter, but the Saints countered with goals from Pierson Fowler and Dave Schoettler.

Jack Skeels restored the Red Hawk lead 2:45 into the fourth quarter with a well placed man-up goal from a tough angle. However, the Saints rebounded with two goals 11 seconds apart from Fowler and Mac Johnson with six minutes left to play. They would hold on for the win, dropping the Red Hawks to 0-4.

The Red Hawks earned their first win of the season on St. Patrick’s Day with a 15-7 win over Manhattanville College at Walt Whitman High School. Meth was the star once again, scoring five goals and contributing one assist in the winning effort.

Matt Prongay and Skeels also played key roles in the win, each contributing two goals. Mark Glander made eight saves to earn his first win of the season. The Red Hawks dominated in every category to get the win, outshooting the Manhattanville Valiants 53-24, picking up 30 ground

balls to Manhattanville’s 18, winning 16 of 25 face-offs, and converting on two of four man-up opportunities.

The Red Hawk offense came out firing, scoring the first five goals in the opening eight minutes of the contest.

Meth and Prongay each scored two goals in this run.

The third quarter saw production from all over the field as the Red Hawks saw six goals coming from five different players. The offense never let up and the defense held strong, as they never let the opponent come within three goals for the entire game.

Meth’s tremendous offensive efforts in these games led him to being named Skyline Conference Player of the Week. Meth had back-to-back four goal games, bringing his career total of games with at least four goals to eleven. The senior is the reigning Skyline Conference tournament MVP and a three-time All-Conference selection.

The Red Hawks fell to 1-5 for the season, losing to seventh-ranked Stevens this Wednesday by a score of 15-7 at Sprague Field. Despite outshooting the Ducks, the Red Hawks never came close as Stevens jumped out to an early 5-1 lead after one quarter and never looked back. The Ducks were led by Andrew Scrutchfield, who netted five goals in a dominating offensive performance.

John Barney led the Red Hawks with three goals and two assists in the losing effort. The Red Hawks will open Skyline Conference play this Saturday when they host Farmingdale State at 4 p.m. at Sprague Field. The Red Hawks enter conference play as the defending conference champions and preseason favorites to take the title again.
