Student Center Cafe debuted a new look this semester.

Natalie Smyth Staff Writer The newest update in campus dining was revealed to the Montclair State University community last Thursday, Sept. 17. This marked the official opening of the newest dining venue at the university, the refurbished Student Center Cafe.

The Cafe is located on the second floor of the Student Center and is the first renovation of the venue since its initial construction in 1972. The design of the cafe mirrors the idea for the whole building, as a place for both faculty and students.

Along with the new design, the cafe has been given a significant amount of additional space. This allowed for an expansion of the area where food is sold while giving the students a more flexible seating arrangement.

Jenny Cajuste, an undeclared Freshman, said she ate at the Student Center Cafe before she started attending this school, when the renovations were still being planned out, and it wasn’t until the day of the reopening that she returned with some friends.

When asked about the quality of the food, Cajuste said, “I haven’t eaten the food here yet today because the line has been really long, but it looks so much better than it did when we were

here for orientation.”

Not only has the layout of the cafe dining area changed, but the variety has increased as well. The cafe now offers more types of food to choose from,

The cafe has food from a variety of different vendors, including California Tortilla, Panda Express, Grill Nation and Olo Sushi. Not only has California Tortilla been recognized for

Alex Gamboa | The Montclarion its vegetarian options, but each dining brand emphasizes giving the customer a lot of options in their meals, making it more accessible for the members of Montclair State community as a whole.

While the indoor portion of the Cafe has been completed, the same is not true for the outdoor patio. The school is currently in the process of building a Dunkin’ Donuts Express, an additional location to the coffee shop’s venue in Blanton Hall, and a sandwich shop called So Deli. These restaurant brands will be located on the patio connected to the Student Center Cafe.

Brian Pintimics, Business Administration major, and Kevin Burns, Business Management major, were eating lunch from California Tortilla. According to Pintimics, “We’re both transfer students, so we’ve never been here before today. But the quality of the food is much better than my school last year.”

Though the Student Center is not complete, it seemed to be exciting to many students, with crowds filling the dining hall past the entrance. Though the location of this dining area is not new, the refurbished Student Center Cafe will give students and employees more places to get their meals, their morning coffee and their midday snacks.

Montclair State Mourns Death of Yogi Berra

Jayna Gugliucci Managing Editor After 90 years of breaking down barriers, achieving his aspirations and making quite the name for himself, Yogi Berra unfortunately passed away Tuesday night. The Montclair community that he had once called his own took to remembering Berra’s tremendous feats as well as memorializing his inspirational career.

In response to the news Wednesday morning, Montclair State University, home to the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center and Yogi Berra Stadium, soon became filled with those paying their respects and simply taking the time to reflect on their personal connections to the former Yankee. Throughout the day, individuals could be seen placing their hands on the prints Yogi once made himself at the museum, laying flowers by his statue and even saying prayers in his honor.

While the museum waived the usual fee for visitors on such a historic day, news trucks from outlets across the area gathered outside. With balloons in the air and petals on the walkway, the memorialization of Berra was a remarkable sight.

Whether one looked up to him while playing Little League or simply passed the museum on the way to classes each day, Berra touched the lives of almost every Red Hawk.

“I was lucky enough to see him at the Yogi Berra Museum as a little kid and, ever since, he has changed my life for the better,” said Daniel Waffenfeld, a sophomore Television and Digital Media major. “He was someone that could connect to the people and make them believe in themselves more than they could. He was a veteran, Yankee, Met, World Series champion, role model, hero and most of all, a person that will be remembered for ever.”

Making his major league debut on Sept. 22, 1946, the 21-yearold Yankee may have had little knowledge of the incredible journey his career would take him on. During his 19-year run, Berra won a total of 10 World Series, earned the league’s Most Valuable Player award three times and retired with the most home runs as catcher. Later, he would also become manager to several teams in major league baseball, including the Yankees, and be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

“He’s one of the best baseball players ever - one of the greatest people ever,” said Dante Giannetta, a junior Television and Digital Media major. “It effects us mostly because we hold his museum. Go pay tribute to him, praise him and see his accolades. He’s won so many things, he’s had an amazing life, he’s an inspiration for so many people and his memory is just going to live on, honestly.”

TJ Hitchings, a freshman Television and Digital Media major, said,“He’s just one of those players who played the game the right way and treated people of all ages with equal opportunity.”

A local resident of Montclair for over 50 years, Berra was awarded with an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Montclair State in 1996. In addition, his oldest son graduated from the university. Alongside his late wife, Carmen, Berra had maintained his collegiate connections as a member of the College of the Arts Advisory Board as well as a frequenter and supporter of many campus events.

In honor of his dedication to the university itself, Yogi Berra Stadium has and will only continue to serve as a namesake and tribute to the former Yankee’s memory. Initially opening their doors in 1998, both the stadium and museum will continue to welcome those who wish to learn, as well as remember Berra and his cherished past.

“I may be a Dodgers fan, but I have nothing but respect for the man known as Yogi Berra,” said Kevin Rabanal, a junior Television and Digital Media major. “He was a true role model for baseball players and fans everywhere. Although his life here on Earth is over, I believe that he has placed a lasting legacy that will be remembered for generations to come.”

Anthony Festiggi, a freshman Justice Studies major, said, “His legacy is his dedication to the sport on and off the field [and] his dedication to his country.”

“Yogi was the one that really sparked my interest in baseball because, growing up, my dad would always tell stories about him,” said Bobby Serrani, a fifth-year English major. “He played a big role in my own appreciation of the sport and he’ll be greatly missed by myself and, I’m sure, all of the aspiring Yogis out there. He’s one of those legends that I know everyone will truly remember, be it here at Montclair State or any other school with a baseball field.”

Though the connection most Red Hawks felt to Berra stemmed from some of their earliest childhood memories and dedication to the university as a whole, several individuals from across the state came to Montclair with the simple hope of sharing their own experience.

“I’ve always admired Yogi,’’ said fan Erik DiNardo of Montville, N.J. “I met him once at a restaurant and he was just a class act. He was the same on the field as he was off the field.

He touched a lot of people. The things he said will always live on.”

“When I was seven years old, I decided I wanted to be a baseball catcher because of Yogi Berra,” said fan Scott Laiacona. “I’ve played baseball all

through my life and I followed in his footsteps, I guess. He was my idol when I was a kid. I always see [Yogi at Yankee Stadium] once in a while. Knowing that he’s gone, I’ll never get the chance again. It’s a sad day in baseball.”

With numerous fans coming to the Montclair State campus in just one day, the legacy the former Yankee leaves behind is one that will only continue to inspire the campus community.

“Our students are so fortunate to have the opportunity to learn about Yogi Berra and his outstanding contributions to baseball, through the Yogi Berra Museum, located on our campus,” said Dr. Karen Pennington, Vice President of Student Affairs and Campus Life.

“They can [still] actively participate in our American pastime by cheering on our baseball team at the great Yogi Berra Stadium.”

At the far end of campus, those who have dedicated their time to the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center are working to ensure that the words of advice and acts of encouragement that Berra left behind will forever be remembered.

“When you walk into the museum, you’ll see Yogi’s [personal life] really come out,” said Kevin Peters, Museum CEO. “You’ll see a big picture of the family. You’ll see his cooperation, his mentoring and you’ll see his dedication to the United States in service. He was so special in his wording and you can see just by the expressions of the folks you deal with at the museum, we were all touched by his life and saddened by his passing.”

“I’ve known [Yogi] a long time,” said Dave Kaplan, Museum Director. “He was involved with the museum and not only is he an idol and an icon, but he’s a dear, dear friend. Yogi had a wonderful relationship and association with the university. We have a wonderful partnership with the university [and] I think it’s only going to strengthen as the years go on.”

Montclair State Remembers Earth Science Professor Kristen Bryfogle Editor-in-Chief Dr. John V. Thiruvathukal, a professor in the Earth and Environmental Studies department at Montclair State University, passed away on Sept. 17, 2015.

He was 77 years old.

Thiruvathukal worked in the department for 45 years before retiring during the summer of 2015. He taught oceanography courses as well as the “Earth and the Environment” general education requirement to thousands of Montclair State undergraduates and also instructed graduate students in his “Marine Geology” course. He also co-authored a book, Elements of Oceanography, and was a member of the American Geophyiscal Union.

During his time at the university, he touched the lives of many of his students, who will remember him as a kind, funny and caring professor.

Although most of his students have already graduated, several alumni who work for the university had previously taken his classes and shared memories of him.

Adjunct professor Christine Valenti, ‘95, who was a Geology minor during her undergraduate career and pursued a M.S. in Geoscience at the university, said, “Words cannot express my sadness over the passing of Dr. T. As a student, I found him to be extremely caring, compassionate and knowledgeable.

Later, as a colleague, he was always very supportive and helpful. His passing is a tremendous loss and he will be sorely missed.”

Another of his students, Yoko Sato, who graduated with a degree in Geoscience in 1998, shared Thiruvathukal’s ability to make the classroom a lively and engaging space. “Teaching Geology was much more challenging then with very limited

Jessicca Bacher Contributing Writer The Department of Civic and Voter Engagement hosted an event on Wednesday afternoon to celebrate National Voter Registration Day for the very first time at Montclair State University. The goal was to encourage students to become involved in voting and making political decisions.

The event was held in the Student Center quad and included voter registration tables, music and a DJ, free ice cream and raffle prizes. Students also had the opportunity to participate in an election for what color Rocky the Red Hawk, Montclair State’s mascot, should be after witnessing a debate between the red and brown versions of Rocky.

Many students were attracted to the event. Some were interested in registering to vote and others were simply interested in getting a free ice cream cone.

“Students aren’t [civically] engaged and the national trend in voting is down among everyone,” said Brian McArdle, Coordinator of the Department of Civic and Voter Engagement about why they decided to host the event. “People don’t have time for it, which is not a good excuse, but it is the nature of our society.”

McArdle explains that due to the decreasing number of voters, National Voter Registration Day first started in 2012. It has expanded across many college campuses, now including Montclair State. “Students and people ages 18 to 29 are a big part of the population and it’s important to get them involved,” said McArdle.

“I think voting makes us responsible and prepares us for real life,” said freshman Emiliano Caballero, who has never voted before and registered for the first time at the event. He says he plans to vote in the up-

Nasrin Younus, a senior, said, “As college students, we need to vote because ultimately whoever the president is will affect our tuition, our available grants, etc.”

Amir Botros, a sophomore who works with the Department of Civic and Voter Engagement, said, “It is important for students at universities to vote to have an effect on the community as a whole. What you get used to when you’re young is what you will do when you grow up, so we need to get people involved now and that way, they will keep voting when they’re older.”

Montclair State has partnered with TurboVote this year to ease the process for students registering to vote. “In the past couple of weeks over 600 students have registered,” said McArdle. “We’re hoping for a huge turnout after the event.”

Thiruvathukal’s helpfulness to himself and other professors who entered the university around the same time as him, calling Thiruvathukal a “faculty mentor.”

Pope also remembered Thiruvathukal’s attention to faculty rights, making sure that professors in the department were being treated fairly and had the correct contracts. Additionally, he admired Thiruvathukal’s ability to make cross-departmental connections which helped the growing department make allies across campus.

Beyond offering professional advice and mentorship, however, Thiruvathukal was also a talented geologist who even enlightened his coworkers, who had experience in the field, according to Pope. “I regret not having more discussions with him, because the times we did talk about geology, I certainly learned new things,” said Pope. “He sent me some studies where he had attempted some geomagnetic survey at an archaeological site. I also remember talking about tsunamis and how they worked after the Indonesian disaster several years ago; just a few months ago, I learned that [he] was involved in the report of the great Alaska Earthquake of 1964 and he was with the National Academy of Science at the time.”

Demetrius Lutz, a graduate student who had Thiruvathukal as a professor in 2001, spoke about the legacy that Thiruvathukal left behind in the halls of Montclair State; “[Dr. Thiruvathukal] loved teaching and inspired his students to pursue their education and future careers with passion. His passing is a loss to the scientific community, the community of Montclair State University and to those who had the privilege to know him on a more personal level.”

The Feliciano Center for Entrepreneurship partnered with Push for Pizza earlier this month to hold a pizza scholarship contest, during which one Montclair State University student won a weekly stipend to buy pizza. Natalie Yavorski, a freshman Fine Arts major, was the grand-prize winner and she will receive a $20 credit to a local pizza shop every week for 16 weeks, extending just over the end of the fall semester.

The contest was held in the Student Center quad on Sept. 8, where participants were asked to write down their email addresses on slips of paper and place them into a sealed box.

Cyrus Summerlin, co-founder of Push for Pizza, selected the

program manager at the Feliciano Center. “This was a great opportunity for students to meet and chat with the founders of a cool startup while also getting a slice of pizza and a chance to enter the ‘Pizza Scholarship’ contest.”

Push for Pizza can be downloaded in the app store on any mobile device. Through the app, students can build their own pizza, select the pizza parlor and pay for the meal in full, including the delivery tip. The pizza is then delivered right to their door, on campus or not.

According to the company’s website, Push for Pizza was founded by five college students “with a simple dream: a world where you can push a button and get a pizza.”

The Feliciano Center holds 15 to 20 free events per year that

All MSU students were eligible to enter and had the ability to win, even if they were not present at the event.

Push for Pizza, a new pizza-ordering app, sponsored the prize. The company also brought a Lamborghini covered in a pizza-themed wrap to campus, giving students an opportunity to pose for pictures with the car. Push for Pizza gave away sunglasses and other small prizes while the Feliciano Center supplied free pizza.

“It’s fitting that we partnered with a pizza-related startup on this contest because we serve pizza at all of our free events,” said Sharon Waters,

Students of all majors are welcome to enroll in the Feliciano Center’s entrepreneurship classes and have the option of earning a Certificate of Entrepreneurship by doing so. The Center is also in the process of creating a new 3-D printing and design lab called the Innovation Center. The lab will be used for a new nine-credit certificate in Entrepreneurship, Lean Manufacturing and 3D Design. The first round of classes is currently being offered this semester.

Eating Seasonally This Fall licious are a popular choice for snacking and Macintosh is a good choice if you like a more tart flavor. You can also add peeled and shredded apples to a baked item such as muffins for a cinnamon-apple flavor.

Be sure not to use too many apples when baking. For example, usually one or two in a muffin recipe will suffice. Apples will add a lot of moisture to the batter, which could lead to the inside staying raw while the outside becomes well done.

For a really sweet way to use apples, make your own apple butter. Utilizing a crockpot (or mini-crockpot), put in peeled and chopped apples plus cinnamon to taste and a dash of vanilla. Let the apples sit for several hours, stirring every half an hour or so, and the apples will form a delicious consistency resembling applesauce. Use this spread on bread or crackers.

It may seem like the amount made is small compared to the amount of apples you use, but the spread is so sweet that you will only need a spoonful at a time.

Brussel sprouts are another item in season right now that may not be your favorite, but prepared well can be a delicious way to incorporate vitamin K, folate and iron into your diet.

Best picked from September to March, this veggie can be a good compliment to a pasta or rice dish or eaten on their own as a side. For a simple prepara-

tion, cut around a cup of brussel sprouts into halves or quarters.

Pour about a spoonful of extra virgin olive oil over them and mix well so that there is an even coating. Spread out on a baking sheet and cook until they start to brown and a fork can easily go through them entirely.

Pears are at their peak from August to February and can be a good snack instead of an apple or a delicious dessert. One medium pear will give you 6 grams of fiber and vitamin C. Try cutting pears in half and adding cinnamon and vanilla, then baking them for 30 minutes each side. Add to vanilla Greek yogurt for a more filling snack or enjoy on their own.

Sweet potatoes are another excellent choice from September to December and can give you an excellent source of vitamin A. There are endless ways to eat sweet potatoes, including cutting and baking them for baked “French fries” or drizzling with a little maple syrup before baking for a sweet side.

Other in-season options include turnips, pomegranates, dates, kiwi, grapefruit and tangerines. Every time you go to the store or market for your regular food shopping, challenge yourself to buy one produce item that you have not yet had. By the end of the season, you are sure to find at least one or two things you want to make a regular part of your meals.

Allison Faccenda Contributing Writer National Hazing Prevention Week has came to Montclair State University this past Monday and will continue through Friday. The schedule of events, structured by Amanda Riehl, the Graduate Assistant of Greek Affairs, has been educationally and strategically designed to eliminate the “H” word - hazing - locally and nationally.

With events ranging from hazing prevention workshops to a hazing prevention rally with an appearance by DJ Ridd, this week was jam-packed with various functions to make students on campus aware of the effects of hazing and why it is not tolerated on Montclair State’s campus.

Riehl did her best to incorporate events that would also involve other student organizations outside of Greek Life such as Montclair State’s sports teams. Contrary to popular belief, hazing, which is predominantly associated with Greek Life, actually occurs in other clubs and organizations on college campuses.

This usually makes items cheaper because they do not have to be transported from somewhere else where they are in season. This means that seasonal items vary depending on your location and what is in season here in Northern New Jersey may not be exactly the same as what is in season in Mexico. If foods do not have to travel as far, they can be sold much closer to the day they are picked, which will help them retain flavor and nutrients that may be lost over time. This can help explain why the items offered at a farmer’s market now are different than in June or why certain foods such as blueberries go on a very big sale for a few weeks.

Summer may seem like the biggest time for fruits and vegetables to be in season thanks to the warm weather, but fall has a few items of its own that are just getting ready to be harvested now. Apples are a huge one from August to November, making apple picking a great activity on a nice weekend. Take advantage by incorporating apples into your day in a few different ways. With around 95 calories in a medium apple (3” across) you will also get 4 grams of fiber and a good amount of vitamin C. Red De-

It takes an average teenage girl approximately an hour and a half to get ready for the day.

As she grows older, the statistics of her getting ready is subjective to her individually.

Every morning, I take about an hour and forty minutes getting ready. It’s the same routine.

Outfit, hair, face – all of this is just products and clothes. It should be a simple task to get ready in the morning, but somehow, I still take an average of two hours.

Why? Like many other twenty year old girls, I have fallen prey to the over-consumption of makeup products and seasonal fashion fads. I spend half my paycheck on that little tube of glitter highlighter for my cheekbones (contouring, oh the wonder of sculpting myself into a bronzed-up Greek goddess) and that cute messenger bag I had to have from Zara.

When trying to justify why I so desperately had to spend a whopping $200 on myself immediately, my loved ones ask me the same question.

“Does it make you feel better about yourself?” Almost always I quickly answer,“Yes. It does.”

Of course, my reply is soaking in my pride. As a young woman balancing school, internships and a job with demanding hours, it’s only right that I pride myself in spoiling myself. I work hard.

However, my own reasoning sets in and then the humiliation comes. A concluding moment of self-reflection hits me as I glance at my disintegrating bank account. The following questions instantly pang at me: 1. Why did you need this? Because it makes me pretty like Vanessa Hudgens.

2. Is it because you want to be like her? No, just look like her.

3. Why can’t you just stop comparing yourself to others? Is it wrong to want to look like someone so beautiful?

4. What will you do when you actually become broke? I would never let myself be broke.

5. What if you didn’t buy any of this? Would you be happy? I’ve got to think that one through.

6. Are you happy? Not yet.

7. Are you happy with yourself? No. 8. Why aren’t you happy with yourself? I don’t know.

And, there it is: the answer to my over-buying and my long mornings. I’ve grown to be extravagant because maybe I’m not too happy with myself.

Retail therapy, perhaps, is very real.

Initially, I believed my case of mistaking products for happiness was a rarity. However, statistics have shown that 1 in 4 women within their twenties become prone to spending at least one full paycheck a month on personal vanity. Could it be that we intensify our vanity from our pre-teens into college?

Why are college girls spending more money on makeup, clothes and such as opposed to books?

It’s all about having selfworth and being aware of our own self-worth. While I’ve become an expert at weighing the value of the different products by my room’s mirror, I have yet to weigh my own value. I’m sure many other young women on campus feel the same way about themselves. In the age of social media and a hypersensitive communications generation, women are not just filtering themselves on Instagram, but also in real life.

While makeup and clothes often successfully compensate for a crappy day, I myself am working on minimizing my need for material happiness. As opposed to needing something tangible to lighten up my day, I’m trying to focus on the production of my own character.

Morning routines have transitioned from makeup, hair and face to prepare, exercise and meditate.

With that said, it’s time for young women to separate themselves from a magnifying mirror and focus on magnifying their strengths along with their self worth.

Combating the ‘H’ Word campus organizations,” said Riehl. According to HazingPrevention.org, “74% of students participating in varsity athletics have experienced at least one hazing behavior.” Athletics is often not associated with the “H” word, however.

“We made it a point to team up with athletics this year to have their involvement on this,” said Riehl. “It’s great seeing their players getting involved and supporting.”

It took about four months for Riehl to get all of the events in motion, scheduling spaces and planning each night’s particular event. The most popular event of the week is taking place in the Student Center where any student is encouraged to fill out a hand cutout and take the pledge against hazing which will be going on until Friday, Sept. 25.

This year’s theme for National Hazing Prevention Week is “These hands don’t haze,” which is the national theme for all hazing prevention weeks that are occurring on college campuses. Several organizations have shown their pledge against hazing through the designing of banners, which can

be viewed hanging in the Student Center lobby.

Different organizations on campus, particularly Greek organizations, have been hosting individual events. Delta Phi Epsilon, a national sorority, holds an annual Anti-Hazing Candlelight Vigil, which they’ve been doing for four consecutive years.

Delta Phi Epsilon’s President, Amanda San Lucas, said, “Hazing is something that is not necessary to become a part of a brotherhood or sisterhood.

I truly hope that those inside and outside of the Greek Community understand this.”

Greek Life takes the largest hit when it comes to allegations against hazing. “I can see why people would automatically assume Greeks are the only ones guilty of hazing,” said Riehl, “mostly because we’re the ones being portrayed in the media, in movies and such. It’s unfortunate because we really have to up our efforts to combating that [image].”

“You can’t rely on the media’s depiction of us, because you really won’t get to know Greek Life for real,” said Riehl.

“People tend to take the me-

dia’s depiction of hazing in Greek Life and don’t always get to see what an actual big family Greek Life really is.”

Yogi Berra’s Legacy: It Ain’t Over

N

early 70 years after Yogi Berra made his major league debut, Montclair State University is left mourning his death. Although his passing is a tragedy to everyone whose lives he had touched, his legacy will forever live on at Montclair State University through the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center and Yogi Berra Stadium, home of the Jackals minor-league baseball team.

The Montclair State community has been extremely fortunate to have had been able to form bonds with such an amazing man.

Although many news outlets have noted Berra’s remarkable baseball achievements, our campus community has been lucky enough to have had a deeper understanding of who Berra really was. He was so much more outside the world

of baseball statistics and World Series rings.

The Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center, which was created in 1998, acts as a permanent memorial to Berra.

Kevin Peters, Trustee and Interim CEO of the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center, said in a press release that the museum “houses a remarkable collection of sports memorabilia illustrating the rich history of baseball and Yogi’s career. But the essence of the museum is not stuff; it’s the exemplary life of the man who inspired us.”

The Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center commits itself to teaching K-12 students respect, teamwork, perseverance and overall excellence, the traits which Berra exhibited in his lifetime.

Berra loved the Museum and Learning Center named in his honor. He even celebrated his

last birthday there. He enjoyed spending his time at the museum, telling his stories to those who yearned for more knowledge.

“Education was hugely important to Yogi. He was all about giving kids the best chance for success,” said Peters. Today, Berra’s spirt continues to live on as the Museum and Learning Center prepares to introduce their statistical and mathematical analysis on sports’ records program for STEM students as well as a program for younger individual to hone in on their leadership skills.

Lindsay Berra, Berra’s granddaughter, stated “I’ve been so lucky because he taught me so much about those things – about teamwork and respect and about being a good person. If everybody tried to be one one-hundredth of the person that [this man was], the

world would be a [much] better place.”

Those who knew Berra agreed, describing him as a dedicated family-man, a life-long friend and a good-humored comedian, in his own right.

Throughout Berra’s long life, he has proven himself to be a role model to all within the Montclair State University community. Everything he stood for should be emulated in our everyday lives.

Although his Museum and Learning Center seeks to educate K-12 students, they teach lessons that everyone can take home with them. Everyone should respect each person they come into contact with, as Berra did. We should learn how to work in a team to produce positive outcomes and when times are tough, we should try just that much harder to do our best. Overall, we should all fol-

The Missing 43: One Year Later What does the Iguala mass kidnapping say about the current state of Mexico?

T

his Saturday will mark the one-year anniversary of the Iguala mass kidnapping, an inthat TIFFANY SAEZ cident has tested the PRODUCTION ability of the EDITOR Mexican government to dutifully enforce the rule of law following the disappearance of 43 students in the Mexican state of Guerrero.

With the whereabouts of their loved ones still unknown, the families of the missing students have not only lost their patience with the government but their confidence in them as well. Given the case’s excessive amount of tampering by authorities, there is still no clear explanation as to what occurred the night the students went missing.

After leaving to partake in a protest against the government’s education reform, more

than 100 students from the allmale Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers’ College planned to travel to Mexico City to raise money to participate in a march commemorating the 1968 student massacre by government forces in the Tlatelolco section of the Capital. While on their journey, the teachers-in-training were shot at by local policemen, who arrested them upon stepping out of their bus. Deeper investigation on the case, as well as eyewitness accounts from those who managed to flee from police custody, suggested that the students were later handed over to members of a local drug cartel who then murdered them and incinerated their bodies.

What was perhaps most disturbing about this case were the ages of the kidnapped students, all of whom were 19 to 20-something year old and could have been anyone’s classmates.

Given Mexico’s long-standing record of corruption, organized crime and disregard for the economically and socially margin-

alized, cases like the Sept. 26 mass kidnapping and the way in which they are handled are nothing new even if they do manage to spark outrage among the international community.

Despite President Enrique Peña Nieto’s pledge to “bring peace to Mexico,” the series of incidents that has occurred since his election victory in 2012 has only exposed the fragility of the country’s institutions and the corruption that further weakens them. Although they have a long history of hostility towards those matriculated at Ayotzinapa, a school known to instill left-wing values into its students, the Mexican security forces suspected of participating in this case have yet to be questioned fully.

As more and more revelations slowly began to surface, the world saw Mexico hit by seismic uproar of demonstrations that demanded answers, justice and even the resignation of Peña Nieto. Though it may not be a Syria, Somalia

or a South Sudan, there have been heightened concerns as to whether Mexico may become the next “failed state.” Of course, these fears may be overexaggerated, since the country is not as ideologically divided or as conflict-ridden as the aforementioned ones are.

Even so, the research institution Fund for Peace, known for its failed states index, placed Mexico on a “high warning” status of becoming a failed state, in light of its worsening security apparatus and its increasing trend of group grievances. Moreover, this past decade alone has brought about sporadic episodes of the Mexican State repeatedly failing to protect human rights and enforce the rule of law over its entire jurisdiction.

Drug cartels, such as those believed to be involved in the kidnapping, continue to operate more strongly than ever. Some are now even straying away from their traditional operations within the underground drug

trade and onto more blatant criminal activities like hijacking shipments of oil. In addition to the considerable amount of influence they have on Mexican politics, the growing strength and highly organized structure of these clandestine syndicates could put them on par with a shadow government.

Given the United States’ close proximity to Mexico, any kind of turbulence south of the border always poses the possibility of spilling over into the north. Thus, the situation in Mexico needs not only to be seen through a human rights perspective but through a national security one as well.

Rather than concentrating their efforts on quelling the turmoil in Europe’s backyard, the US government must pay more attention to the escalating tensions in its neighbor, Mexico.

Ahmed Mohamed and Hypersensitivity The media and public were overly sensitive about Mohamed and his clock

n modern day America, we have been so consumed by hypersensitivity that it has caused us to lose our NICHOLAS ability to use DA SILVA critical judgCOLUMNIST ment in serious situations. It has gotten so bad that, nowadays, a student can find themselves being taken out of class and put in handcuffs if they appear to be doing something suspicious.

This is not an exaggeration, but rather the unfortunate reality that a high school student from Irving, Texas had to endure on Monday, Sept. 13. The student, Ahmed Mohamed, found himself arrested after coming to school with a homemade clock that drew suspicion from his teacher.

The news of his arrest has led to an outpouring of sympathy and support for Mohamed across social media, with many accusing MacArthur High School and the local police department of mistreating the 14-year-old boy due to the fact that he is Muslim. Thanks to overreaction from both the school and the media, a situation that could have had a much simpler solution has ended up being blown out-of-proportion, leaving an innocent boy in a whirlwind of controversy he certainly did not deserve.

When looking back on the

turn of events, Mohamed created a clock that was comprised of a circuit board with wires leading to a red, digital display.

He brought the clock to his high school engineering class with the hopes of impressing his teacher. Mohamed claims that when he showed his engineering teacher the clock, the teacher was impressed but said that he should not let any other teachers see his homemade device. However, when the device went off during an English class, Mohamed had no choice but to reveal the clock to another teacher.

Later in the day, Mohamed was pulled out of class by his principal and five police officers and was taken to a room where he was questioned for about an hour and a half.

Recounting the experience in an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, Mohamed said he asked if he could call his parents. “They told me, ‘No, you can’t call your parents. You’re in the middle of an interrogation at the moment.’ They asked me a couple of times, ‘Is it a bomb?’ and I answered a couple of times, ‘It’s a clock.’ I felt like I was a criminal,” Mohamed said. “I felt like I was a terrorist.”

After the interrogation, Ahmed was taken to a juvenile detention center, where he was later released into the custody of his parents. No charges were pressed against him, but MacArthur High School has punished the boy for his alleged

misconduct by suspending him for two weeks. Mohamed and his family are currently looking for a new high school to which he could transfer.

When the news broke about Mohamed’s interrogation and arrest, many quickly jumped to the conclusion that the boy was targeted because of his Muslim heritage, especially given his last name. Mohamed’s father, Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed had much to say about the situation. “My son’s name is Mohamed—people just think Muslims are terrorists but we are peaceful. We are not that way,” his father said.

Hilary Clinton, no stranger to controversy herself, tweeted something that generalizes what most people feel about this situation; “Assumptions and fear don’t keep us safe— they hold us back…”

The problem with everyone blaming this arrest on racial profiling is that it goes back to what I said before; hypersensitivity in modern day society is clouding our ability to fairly assess a situation. Having seen the homemade clock through images posted on social media, I can say that I could understand the school’s teachers and administration being suspicious about the homemade device.

The clock, which is contained in a suitcase, looks like a ticking time bomb you would see in a typical spy, thriller or action film. You also have to consider the fact that almost every month we hear about an act of

mass violence occurring at a school or college campus. With that in mind, imagine being the teacher who saw his clock and heard it go off with a loud beeping sound. The teacher and the school have to be responsible for the safety and well-being of all their students and they had the right to check and make sure the clock was not a device intended to cause harm.

The real problem was not the fact that they were concerned about the clock, but how far they went in their treatment of Mohamed. All the teacher had to do was bring Mohamed to the principal’s office, ask him about the clock, have a police officer come to the school to make sure the device was safe and simply advise Mohamed that it was not appropriate to bring a suspicious-looking device like his clock into the school. There was no need for five police officers to interrogate the boy for an hour and a half, nor was there any need for him to be arrested and not be allowed to call his parents. The authorities let their concerns for safety take the investigation way too far, which has resulted in the school and the local police being accused of having prejudice towards Muslims.

If there is any silver lining to a situation overblown by hypersensitivity, it is that an aspiring engineer has gotten his work commended and recognized across the country. President Barack Obama invited Mohamed to the White House to

see his homemade device. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, wrote a post on his website commending Mohamed’s ambition and inviting him to the headquarters of the company. MIT astrophysicist Chanda Prescod-Weinstein sent a tweet to Mohamed inviting him to the university, which is especially meaningful for Mohamed as MIT is his ‘dream school.’

The fact that things have worked out for Mohamed should not let us ignore the fact that the whole situation could have been avoided if the initial investigation of the homemade clock was handled with rational thinking instead of overbearing paranoia. The media themselves are not blameless either as they played a pivotal role in manipulating the fallout of this incident.

It is the responsibility of the media to always give a fair and balanced account of an event instead of twisting the narrative to ‘spice up’ the story.

That way, the public will not be coming to definite conclusions about a story without fully understanding all of the details of what actually happened. It is okay to be aware of the possible consequences our actions and inactions can have on others, but being too sensitive about those consequences can lead to a massive public outcry over a 14-year-old student being put in handcuffs.

Running of the Wieners Is ‘Dog-gone’ Great Dachshund race raises money for less fortune dachshunds

However, animal lovers in Melbourne, Australia were able to step

away from their computer screens long enough to have their beloved pet dachshunds take part in what is truly the cutest sport known to man: the Running of the Wieners.

On Sept. 19, 2015, over 50 dachshunds kicked off the country’s Oktoberfest activities by taking part in the Hophaus Southgate Inaugural Dachshund Running of the Wieners.

The Running of the Wieners sought to include every dog in the festivities with not only a main race, but races for mini, standard and old dachshunds as well as dachshunds with disabilities. Although not ev-

ery dachshund was quite ready for their racing debut, all dogs were invited to participate in the costume competition.

If wiener dog racing and costume competitions were not wonderful enough already, the event helped raise nearly $4,000 for Dachshund Rescue Australia, a nonprofit organization that rescues and helps find new homes for dachshund across Australia. The money raised can now go to the rescue’s great missions. At the same time, the organization can now further their efforts in helping ensure animal welfare, educating the general public of what a great

breed dachshunds are and providing foster homes as well as forever homes for dachshunds.

The Hophaus Southgate Inaugural Dachshund Running of the Wieners is nothing new, but it is truly a wonderful event for dogs and owners alike.

The event allows hundreds of dachshunds owners to create a community of those who love animals and the dachshund breed in particular. Also, with the help and support of the Dachshund Rescue Australia, the event promotes the adoption of the quirky breed by celebrating them and all their unique qualities. Beyond ev-

It’s Time to Meet the Muppets...Again

Kermit makes a primetime reappearance in The Muppets.

The new series takes a more modern approach to the classic comic troupe.

When ABC announced last year that The Muppets were returning to prime-time television, it wasn’t clear what form the new series, centering on the old, furry cast of friends, would take. Now that The Muppets has seen its premiere, it’s clear that, although some of the characters and personalities may be the same, the return of the Muppets is bringing an entirely new sense of humor to a new target audience.

The Muppets has been marketed as a more mature version of the classic Muppet humor that many know and love. No longer are the puppets mere peers of Elmo and Big Bird; they rival Tina Fey and Steve Carell in the mockumentary type of comedy television which has surged in popularity after the success of The Office, 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation.

The new series centers, classically, on Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy. Miss Piggy hosts her own late night show, similar to Jimmy Fallon or Seth Meyers, and Kermit is her executive producer. And, if you haven’t heard, Kermit and Piggy are no longer a couple, with Kermit dating a new pig, Denise, and Miss Piggy presumably playing the dating game.

The rest of the characters fall into their likely roles, with the Electric Mayhem taking the place of a band like The Roots, Fozzie Bear playing the MC and Scooter being the stage manager as usual. The best comedic moments of the show came from these characters and from what I would call ‘typical’ Muppet humor. Fozzie’s bad jokes, the jeers of Statler and Waldorf and the self-awareness of Gonzo, who claims that he hates confessionals on reality shows because they allow hypocrisy right before he says that he loves confessionals to the main camera, were some of the biggest laughs I had. When it came to these classic, goofy punchlines, the writers hit the mark with jokes that were for all viewers to enjoy.

Although critic Erik Adams claimed that the “emotions” and not the “humor” in The Muppets made it more than ever accessible for an adult audience, I disagree. As one who grew up watching innocuous re-runs

of The Muppet Show and who was delighted by the recent and child-friendly The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted films, I was really disappointed by how heavily the show relied on cartoon violence and sexual innuendo for the majority of laughs. Seeing Rizzo and a female rat prepare to take their dinner date to the ‘next level’ and listening to Kermit’s new girlfriend suggestively whisper into his ear definitely dispelled the magic of The Muppets that I grew up with.

The franchise survived nearly 40 years of show business without reverting to sexual humor. At the risk of sounding prudish, I wish I hadn’t seen the writers stoop down to these jokes which alienate younger viewers and make The Muppets suggestive enough that some parents might want to keep the series away from their kids, the exact opposite result intended for the new series, which hoped to reach a wider audience. I could have gone through life without hearing Kermit the Frog say he was “living in a bacon-wrapped Hell” or Miss Piggy talk about getting a butt-lift and I’m sure other viewers felt the same way.

With that being said, it wasn’t just the old jokes that stayed true to The Muppets of days past, but also the sentimentality that always accompanied the jokes and taught valuable life lessons to viewers. In the middle of the show, we saw a poignant moment where Miss Piggy vulnerably reveals to Kermit that she doesn’t want Elizabeth Banks to appear as a guest on the show because the celebrity reminds her of their break-up. In this moment, we saw Piggy and Kermit put their differences aside and cooperate.

That was really the golden moment of the series premiere. If we see more sentimental and touchingly realistic moments like this, I think the show has a chance to keep The Muppets in the spotlight.

The actual airtime of the show was relatively short, so it really only gave us a taste of the updated Muppets. As a long-time fan, I have hope that The Muppets will shape-up and redeem themselves as a family favorite for all ages.

Beirut’s ‘No No No’ is more like Ok Ok Ok Tiffany Saez Production Editor

Moving on, the three minute and thirty second “August Holland” sounds like something out of an older Belle and Sebastian disc, with its curt piano chords and strings and Condon repeating, “I want to be there now.”

Perhaps the Beirut frontman is alluding to a desire of wanting to go back to the state of happiness he felt after reaching substantial success with The Rip Tide.

Although it is not necessarily bad, No No No is Beirut’s least favorably reviewed album to date.

A common criticism seems to stem from the narrow choice of instrumentals in No No No compared to the very extravagant orchestra used in The Rip Tide.

Another weakness of the album may also be its brevity. Despite being four years in the making, No No No is a mere 29 minutes long.

Moreover, considering the fact that Condon knows how to play a wide range of unconventional musical instruments— from accordion to euphonium to ukulele— many fans are upset at the fact that almost none of these are being utilized in No No No. Nevertheless, I can understand why Condon chose to limit his instruments in this album. Maybe adding more would have jeopardized the cohesiveness of this disc or maybe he did not want it to sound like a sequel to The Rip Tide.

Sure, No No No is much different from what fans consider to be the quintessential Beirut.

Even so, Beirut’s latest disc still shares some similarities with the rest of the band’s discography, namely its lyrics are still as emotional and thoughtful as ever, making it an overall okay album.

In what is considered to be a step away from Beirut’s 2011 The Rip Tide, an album widely acclaimed for its distinctive orchestral melodies, the band now finds itself moving towards a more generic indie pop sound in their fourth studio album No No No. Owing to its blending of Balkan, French and Mexican elements, Beirut’s previous LPs defined the band as “world music.”

No No No, however, cannot be labeled as such, for it is not only more simplistic in terms of its composition but also somewhat more catchy than its predecessors.

One would normally think that an album recorded during one of the lowest points of an artist’s life would produce a rather gloomy sound. Yet No No No is actually quite light and upbeat in both its lyrics and melodies. The album manages to stay within the confines of its main theme, love, which seems to have pulled frontman Zach Condon out of rock bottom following his nervous breakdown and divorce. The lyrics of the title track and lead single “No No No,” for example, represent one’s excitement and wariness to take a chance when falling in love; “Don’t know the first thing about who you are/ My heart is waiting, taken in from the star/ If we don’t go now, we won’t get very far.”

There are also certainly more electronic instruments used in this album, especially in tracks like “No No No,” whose intro goes from sounding like a cheesy ringtone to the eclectic keyboard in a rhythmic bossa nova. Meanwhile, the first track “Gibraltar” opens up with some very energetic bongos that are then followed by piano and hands clap-

Scream Queens: A Show to Die For Rizzlyn Melo Assistant News Editor

It seems a bit unusual to start a horror-mystery show with a woman staring at her blood-covered hands. This has to be the ending; she is literally caught red-handed!

However, for Fox’s highly anticipated new series, Scream Queens, this is just the beginning of what can only be described as the worst Hell Week in Greek Life history.

Scream Queens revolves around the secrets and murders that plague the sisters of the fictional Kappa Kappa Tau sorority. Leading this elite group is Chanel Oberlin, played by Emma Roberts, who would basically be Regina George in college had Cady Heron never intervened in high school. With a condescending tone and a smug smile, Roberts aces being the coldhearted, totally unsympathetic so-

rority president. Challenging her iron fist is Jamie Lee Curtis as Dean Cathy Munsch, who proclaims that the sorority must accept any and all pledges, a condition that brings about an interesting array of applicants.

Standing out from the crowd of candle bloggers and Taylor Swift fanatics is freshman Grace, played

by Skyler Samuels. She dreams of following in her late mother’s footsteps by pledging in her former sorority. Her situation becomes complicated, however, with the emergence of the Red Devil serial killer who may be connected to a sorority sister’s mysterious death 20 years prior.

Created by Glee and American Horror Story producers, Ryan Murphy, Brad Flachuk and Ian Bren-

nan, it comes as no surprise that Scream Queens is like a testament to both shows. There is the overarching mystery that is typical of AHS, but there’s also a Glee-like humor in the dialogue. The comedy seems to outshine the horror.

The plot really isn’t anything viewers haven’t seen before. An unknown killer parades around terrorizing people. The Scream movies all revolve around this plot and even today’s Pretty Little Liars draws some similarities.

What spices this age-old storyline is the dark humor that accompanies it. At times, the show tries to humorously make light of the perils that are sometimes associated with the modern generation. For instance, the importance of social media to today’s youth is exagger-

ated in the scene where Chanel #2, played by Ariana Grande, tweets about her attacker rather than reporting him or her to the police.

Even the first scenes of the show played on the many real-life accounts of parties raging on while one partygoer lays dying. The sisters happily sing along to TLC’s “Waterfall” while another sister aches for medical attention.

Horror lovers may not be completely satisfied with Scream Queens, but from the two-hour premiere, it is evident that this may only be one small aspect of the show. Yes, it’s a mystery thriller, but it may also be a biting portrayal of Millennials and their perceived flaws. Either way, there is a charisma to the show and a captivating quality about it that makes it worth the watch.

‘Everest’ Goes Big with Emotions and Visual Effects Julia Siegel Contributing Writer Everest is the latest film to showcase the extreme adventure of attempting to climb Mt. Everest. Similar to most of its predecessors, Everest is based on a true story, following the events of the 1996 climbing season tragedy.

The story follows two rival adventure climbing groups that team up in an attempt to bring their clients up and down Mt. Everest safely. However, as the weather takes a turn for the worse, everyone is in danger of being stranded on the icy terrain.

The film is packed with an A-list cast, emotional highs and lows and stunning visual effects that make you feel like you are on the mountain, too. The visual effects are arguably the best part of the film. IMAX teamed up with Universal Studios to give Everest a one-week special-engagement early release in IMAX 3D. Universal was smart to make this deal because it allows Everest to get better word-of-mouth publicity ahead of the standard and RealD 3D release on Friday, Sept.

For anyone who is unaware of what IMAX is, I suggest you go and experience it for yourself. To be brief, it is a massive floor-toon-ceiling, wall-to-wall screen with surround sound to make you feel like you are a part of the movie, not just watching it. IMAX also has the best visual effects around. The 3D is absolutely stunning, making you duck out of the way as an avalanche plummets towards you. The cinematography on the scenery shots is also amazing, which made me think back to the old IMAX days of standard museum documentaries. Some films are now made for a premium screening experience, Everest certainly being one. This is exemplified in the scene where a helicopter goes up to one of the base camps on a rescue mission.

As the helicopter swerves in, out and around icebergs, you feel as though you are along for the ride and may crash.

The second enjoyable feature of Everest is the deep emotion running throughout the en-

tire film. The emotion of the film is the same as a typical climb: ascending to the peak then quickly descending until you hit rock bottom. This is where the screenwriting was absolutely perfect. The beginning scenes draw you in and make you emotionally attached to several characters. Towards the middle, you feel their accomplishments and failures as if they are your own. By the end, you are left with the same tragic, broken feelings as the survivors.

One aspect of the film that I thought added to the intense emotions was the up-close shots of the climbers’ faces. Some of the reviews that came out a month ago stated that these shots were “too personal and uncomfortable” for IMAX. I feel the exact opposite.

It is brilliant directing to have up-close shots of the climbers because it makes the audience uncomfortable. The entire first half of the film is full of little quips about how climbing is dangerous and people may not make it and so on. Adding the close-ups helps the audience to feel the true seriousness of the adventure. You are supposed to be uncomfortable watching the film because you do not know whether the climbers can make it up and down Mt. Everest alive.

Besides the visual effects, thick emotions and well-written script, the cast also had good performances. The cast includes Jason Clarke, Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightly, Emily Watson, John Hawkes, Michael Kelly and Robin Wright. Clarke and Knightly, who play husband and wife, perhaps share the best scene towards the end of the film. Their performances enhance the emotional phone call they share.

All in all, Everest is an all-around winner.

For anyone considering seeing it this weekend, I highly recommend spending the few extra dollars to see it in IMAX 3D. I cannot imagine it would be the same movie in 2D.

Over the past several years, Johnny Depp has been criticized time and time again for his lack of a star performance. All of that changed this past weekend with the release of his latest film, Black Mass.

The film opened second in the box office to sequel hit Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials and is based on the true story of South Boston’s most notorious gangster, James “Whitey” Bulger. Even though Black Mass did not come in first, it had a stronger earning than its initial predictions. This is the best news for Depp, considering his last few films, Mortdecai, Transcendence and The Lone Ranger, flopped. The actor has seemed to finally hit a homerun with his performance as Bulger, which will most likely lead to Depp’s fourth Academy Award nomination.

Depp’s new success cannot only be accredited to his stellar acting.

The rest of the cast of highly regarded actors includes Joel Edgerton, Kevin Bacon, Benedict Cumberbatch and Peter Sarsgaard.

Maybe Depp should thank the casting department for giving him a strong supporting cast to help

make the film a major success.

Depp is a perfect choice to play the legendary gangster psychopath because he normally portrays psychotic characters. His performance was so good that, at times, I sat in the theater wondering if Bulger was even a bad person. Depp was so convincing his role as a family man in scenes with Bulger’s son, mother and brother that I honestly thought that he could not truly be bad man. Following these softer scenes were brutal murders by Bulger and his henchmen. I could not understand why Bulger went back and forth from being semi-redeemable to a ruthless killer. This led me to wonder what the real Bulger was like.

The film left me with many more questions. Why was Bulger sentenced to Alcatraz? We never learn the answer because the film starts in 1975, years after Bulger’s sentence. How was Bulger’s brother, Billy Bulger (Cumberbatch), able to hold office as State Senator when his brother was a wanted fugitive?

Why did the deaths of Bulger’s son and mother set him on a deeper path to crime? How did Bulger go

from being a small gangster to Boston kingpin in such a short amount of time?

Unfortunately, the film did not get into what I felt to be the more interesting parts of Bulger’s crime spree. Instead, it focused on the “alliance” between Bulger and corrupt FBI agent John Connolly (Edgerton). The alliance was explained as Connolly wanting to take down the Irish Mafia and needing information from his childhood friend, Bulger. With the deal of being an informant, Bulger and his gang were free to do whatever they pleased. Edgerton played the corrupt agent so well that I wondered at times who the real criminal in the film was.

Edgerton’s strong supporting role may land him an Academy Award nomination, too.

Overall, the story was very interesting and captivating. Bulger is a huge individual in crime history that has always been a black mass of mystery. I may never know if the film is the complete, full story, but I sure am nervous if it is.

One Direction Finally Reaches the ‘A.M.’ Jayna Gugliucci Managing Editor

Photo courtesy of Wikipedia.org To the surprise of fans everywhere, One Direction took to the band’s offical social media accounts early Tuesday afternoon to make a few announcements about their upcoming projects. The flurry of information surrounding their next album sent listeners across the country and around the globe into an anticipated state of excitement.

According to the boys themselves, their next album, entitled Made in the A.M., is set to be released on Nov. 13. Within a matter of minutes, the record was made available for pre-order on the iTunes store, where eager listeners were able to instantly download the first single off the album, “Infinity.”

Rushing to listen, I immediately clicked play and sat back waiting for the song to begin. With the first few notes and Niall Horan’s accented vocals coming through the speakers, I could not help but smile. Though I have been a fan of theirs for as long as I can remember, the single actually lived up to expectation.

Even still, I honestly did not think the melody or message would be as catching as it is. Frankly, I have never instantly liked the first song to be released off one of their albums since their change in sound. When “Best Song Ever” was released

with the band’s third album, I could do nothing but simply stare at the computer screen in front of me. It was definitely not what older fans were expecting. The following year, in anticipation of Four, the boys released “Fireproof,” which only continued to disappoint.

However, the long-awaited first single from shortly after their X Factor days, “What Makes You Beautiful,” truly touched my heart with its bouncy and pop-inspired melody. In fact, it was the only song fans of five years such as myself had when the boys first strayed from covers and started making their own music. The next year proved to be much of the same as the they continued with their well-received second album’s single, “Live While We’re Young.”

Of course, following all of the boys’ album announcements and releases, there is a huge amount of success; more often than not, the setlist proves to be one worth buying and listening to on repeat.

In fact, each album One Direction has released has sold over three million copies around the globe.

With that being said, despite losing Zayn Malik along the way, the album ahead is only expected to have the same reception due to the support of their fans.

In addition to 16 new songs, Made in the A.M. features the band’s hit track from the summer as well. “Drag Me Down,” the first song to exclusively feature Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Horan and Harry Styles, sets the boys among the runways of the NASA Space Center in Houston, Texas where “nobody can drag [them] down” to the earth below. Much different from their past sound, One Direction has certainly made a new name for themselves in the world of pop and will only hope to solidify such through their new album.

With the boys following the same release schedule for the past four years, fans could have expected the first single, “Drag Me Down,” in August and the second, “Infinity,” in September. In turn, the next tracks from the album will be released in October or November and even more are sure to follow leading up to the final release date in midNovember. Until then, eager listeners can tune into Spotify, log onto iTunes or search for their daily dose of One Direction’s Made in the A.M.

Glimpse of Hope for Manchester United

Manchester United has started the season 4-1-1 and are just two points behind second-place Manchester City.

English giant Manchester United has been undergoing constant scrutiny ever since Sir Alexander “Alex” Chapman Ferguson retired from coaching after giving the club their 20th Premier League title back in 2013. After the legendary run by Ferguson, Man. U. entered a stage very similar to the Dark Ages. David Moyes from Everton was chosen to be successor for the great Ferguson and, although Moyes seemed to have the talent to fill Ferguson’s shoes, it was quickly revealed that he couldn’t deal with the pressure from the fans. Moyes lasted 10 months before being sacked after not being able to make Man. U. either win the league title or qualify to a European championship.

Following Moyes’ disastrous season, Manchester United announced that they were hiring the Netherlands National Team manager Louis van Gaal after his run with the Dutch national team at the 2014 World Cup. Not only did van Gaal attract attention due to his legacy, but he also attracted attention by hiring huge players such as Ander Herrera, Luke

Shaw, Radamel Falcao and former Madrid player Angel Di Maria.

Although his first season started with a shaky start due to the injuries of many of his new players, van Gaal managed to end in fourth place, which was three places higher and six points higher than the former season under Moyes’ management.

This season, van Gaal also started to stir up the press due to many transfer rumors. United goalkeeper David de Gea was put under the spotlight after it became publicly known that Spanish superpower Real Madrid was interested in him. De Gea had a consistent run with Manchester United and was seen by many as a suitable replacement for Spanish national Iker Casillas. This negotiation was an absolute nail-biter because the transfer was being deliberated during the last hours of the transfer deadline.

Fortunately for van Gaal, Man. U. was able to keep de Gea after the negotiation did not to come into completion.

It was also learned soon after that de Gea signed a four-year deal due to the fact that Spanish manager Vicente del Bosque stated that it would be difficult

to keep de Gea as a starter for the Spanish side if he did not start for Manchester United.

Amidst all the controversy with de Gea, Man. U. did manage to obtain incredible talent such as former PSV champion Memphis Depay and 19-year-old French international Anthony Martial. Depay was crucial for PSV when he won the Dutch league title.

Anthony Martial was brought aboard by a whopping £36 million, the highest fee ever paid for a teenager. He has since showed his worth with his performance for Man. U. after coming on as a substitute against Liverpool and Southhampton.

In both games, Martial showed his ability while scoring a brace against Southhampton and a lone goal in his debut with a combined 80 minutes of gameplay.

Although the Champions league fixture resulted in a loss and gruesome injury of Luke Shaw, Manchester United fans around the world are hoping that, with the recent transfers, we might finally have what it takes to be a superpower this season.

This goal seemed to give Haverford life, as the ‘fords came out pressing high after the halftime break. Haverford soon tied the game at 2 a piece, when Tejan Walcott jumped on a poor Montclair State clearance and slotted home from 10 yards. John Starner had done an excellent job man-marking Walcott for the duration of the game until this point.

Quickly after the restart, Taranto played a sublime through ball from deep in midfield that split two defenders and sent L. Terci clear on goal.

He was taken down from behind in a last ditch effort by Haverford center-back Reiss Berger at the top of the 18 yard box. The foul could have justified a red card, as Berger denied L. Terci a clear goal scoring opportunity, but the referee saw otherwise and only gave him a yellow.

The next 15 minutes of the game were very scrappy and physical, with both teams committing fouls and fighting for the ball. The Red Hawks dominated possession but were denied any clear chances until the 70th minute. A Montclair State cross was cleared to the top of the 18, where Taranto trapped it, feinted a shot, took a touch to give himself space and blasted a rising shot from about 20 yards into the top left corner of the goal. This marked Taranto’s first goal for the Red Hawks, having missed his first two seasons due to injury, and what a way to open up his account. The shot was pure class.

Lifted by the goal, Montclair was able to buckle down and maintain possession, earning a decisive non-conference victory and improving to 6-0 on the season.

Mike Olla Injured But Not Defeated A look into this soccer star’s lifelong career and hopes for the future

There were 73 seconds left in the match before Montclair State’s men’s soccer team extended its six-game undefeated streak to seven. However, before the final whistle could alleviate the tension that naturally builds during a 1-1 game, Anthony Passiatore, an Oneonta midfielder, scored the winning goal.

The bleachers at Pittser Field resounded with a communal groan. On the other side of the artificial turf, an injured Mike Olla, the team’s leading goal scorer at the time, could only sit and watch.

Olla, 21, of Bloomfield, suffered a hamstring injury in MSU’s 2-1 win against Hunter College on Sept. 9. Two days earlier, the athletic department had singled him out as the fall semester’s first Athlete of the Week, but instead of focusing on his individual triumphs, Olla promoted the success of the team.

“I feel like this year will be a really good year,” Olla said, remaining positive after the loss to Oneonta. “This is a special team and we haven’t had a feeling like this in a while.”

Olla emphasized the efforts of the team, but, wearing a gray t-shirt and red Nike shorts, the 6-foot-tall forward stood out

from his teammates in white, who were shuffling off of the field.

On Sept. 15, Olla, who scored five goals in the opening five games, was again named Athlete of the Week.

“Mike Olla’s a good player,” head coach Todd Tumelty said.

“He’s super athletic. He does a good job for us.”

Olla, who has played soccer on two continents, helped his high school to a national championship and the Red Hawks to last year’s New Jersey Athletics Conference championship. Olla turned 21 on Sept. 23, but has been playing soccer since he learned how to walk.

“My dad put a ball at my feet and I’ve just been playing ever since,” Olla said in a low voice that masked his fading English accent.

Born in east London to Nigerian parents, Olla played in the Leyton Orient F.C. youth academy before moving to Bloomfield in 2007.

Before becoming a Red Hawk, Olla was a St. Benedict’s Gray Bee. In his final season at St. Benedict’s Prep, Olla made 16 goals and four assists. He finished the season as the team’s leading scorer and helped St. Benedict’s collect its eighth national championship.

That season, Olla also scored his most memorable goal, which he netted against Pennington School from 35 yards out.

“I just ripped it. It was all power,” Olla said, scratching his beard as he recollected his memory of the goal.

Originally, Olla was to attend Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y., but he didn’t really want to play Division I soccer.

“I liked Montclair,” Olla said, explaining how he ended up at a Division III school. “When I came here, I liked the coach, the staff and the players.”

Again turning attention to his teammates, Olla said, “They just made me feel at home.”

The men’s soccer team prides itself on its “family feel.” After every home game, players can be seen sitting around the field, eating a homemade dinner provided by several parents of the athletes.

“This is a longstanding tradition,” said Sylvia Gonzalez, mother of goalkeeper Michael Gonzalez, as two women on her left ladled pasta pepperoni onto paper plates and distributed them to player after player.

Soccer has also influenced Olla’s family at home. His father played as a young man and his brother Phillip, a freshman at New Jersey City University, plays soccer for the Gothic Knights. Montclair State defeated the Gothic Knights 4-0 on Sept. 23.

Despite playing for competing schools, Olla said that soccer has brought them closer together. “It’s something we’ll always have in common.”

After the Oneonta game, teammate Kazari Trought,

walked over and threw an arm around Olla’s shoulders. “He’s the star player on the team,” Trought said as both players laughed.

Olla tried to deny the claim and explain the praise by saying, “this is actually my best friend.”

Still, Olla knows what it means to be a top goal scorer on the team; “It’s very important because you do what everybody wants to see,” said Olla.

“Apart from the attention, you feel like you did something for your team.”

Olla, who prays before every match, hopes to play professional soccer at a lower-league team in England after graduating, if that’s “God’s plan” for him.

“I don’t want to not try and say, ‘what if.’ I want to try and see what happens,” Olla said.

After missing four games, Olla hopes to return to the lineup in the home game against Stockton University on Saturday.

“If he continues to work hard, then he’ll have a real successful season here,” Tumelty said.

Olla just wants fans to come out and support the team and “to see the greatness that will happen this season.”

Stuck in a Rut

Montclair State football drops to 0-2 on the season

If the week one loss against Delaware Valley College wasn’t enough heartbreak for the Montclair State University Red Hawks, the 46-14 blowout against Salisbury University would certainly crush all emotions heading into the following week.

Salisbury quarterback Ryan Jones amassed for 14 rushes, 313 total yards on offense while tossing four touchdowns and Jerome Johnson was good for 96 yards and was responsible for the first 29 points of the Sea Gulls’ offense.

After a series of back-andforth possessions, Montclair State special teams forced Salisbury to begin at their own 7-yard line. Tailback Johnson would rush for seven yards, followed by quarterback Jones hitting wideout Aaron Moore for an 86-yard bomb, running after the catch and scoring, placing the score 7-0 Salisbury with 5:57 left in the first quarter. On the following possession, Salisbury compiled a 70-yard march within four plays for another touchdown via quarterback draw, which extended the score to 16-0 with 6:46 left in the first half. In the next series, Jones hit receiver Isaiah Taylor

for a 39-yard pass before rushing into the end zone to draw the score up to 23-0 Salisbury at the end of the half.

In the first drive in the second half, the Red Hawks were picked off at their own 19-yard line, which eventually gave way to another Johnson touchdown.

Following up Salisbury’s fourth score of the game, Montclair State Ryan Davies connected with freshman wide receiver Julianee Prince for a 78-yard touchdown with 11:01 remaining in the third quarter to give Montclair the touchdown.

The happiness was short-

lived as the Sea Gulls scored once again with 8:45 left on the clock, leaving the scoreboard reading 36-7.

Montclair State did find a way to rebound through a 75-yard drive that included a 43-yard deep ball to freshman wideout Nick Soravilla. A Zach Ligouri one-handed grab sealed the score difference for Montcliar State at 36-14 with 6:48 left in the third.

The Sea Gulls offense did not slow, as they were once again successful in scoring using a 30-yard run as well as a 28-yard field goal with 6:05 left in the fourth quarter.

Davies was 20 of 36 and threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns. This victory against the Montclair State Red Hawks marks the first time since 1986 that Salisbury beat MSU. The Red Hawks’ next contest is away in Glassboro where they will play Rowan University on Saturday, Sept. 26. at 7 p.m.

The women’s soccer team added two wins to their sixgame winning streak with wins over Farleigh Dickinson University-Florham (3-3-0) and New Jersey City University (34-0) this past week. The Red Hawks earned their first conference victory against New Jersey City University and they moved up to being ranked 25th in the country for NCAA Division III Soccer.

The team outscored their opponents by a combined total of 9-0 this past week as they improved their record to 6-1. Freshman forward Sophie Calverley contributed a pair of goals to the team’s 5-0 victory over FDU-Florham on Sept. 16.

The women scored three goals in the first half of their 4-0 victory and outshot their opponents 24-1. They used their superior depth, using nine substitutes over the course of the game, as they earned their sixth consecutive win.

Junior forward Jennie Hornstra scored two goals for the Red Hawks and has now scored in three straight games.

Madison and Senior Martina Landeka also recorded goals in the contest.

New Jersey City University goalkeeper Cassie Lubonski made two impressive fingertip saves, but ultimately her efforts weren’t enough. Erinne Finlayson and Amanda Vietri combined to give the Red Hawks their third shutout of the year.

Men’s Soccer Keeps on Rolling

The Red Hawks men’s soccer team won a hotly contested game against Haverford College 3-2 after junior midfielder Mike Taranto broke the tie late in the game.

Montclair State (5-0) lined up in its usual 4-2-3-1 formation, with Tyler Daly, John Starner, Joey Barajo and Kyle Goodwin making up the back four.

Taranto and Kevin Simek started in the midfield, while,

from right to left, Damian Bziukiewicz, Rafael Terci and Matt Hendrickson made up the attacking 3, while Lucas Terci played up top as the lone striker.

The game was back and forth early, with both teams playing very fast and looking to break when they won the ball back.

Montclair State was able to grab an early goal when Bziukiewicz played L. Terci down the right.

L. Terci took a touch and then crossed low and hard, finding Bziukiewicz. He poked the ball

from 6 yards out off the keeper, then bouncing again off of a defender and into the back of the net.

Quickly after that, Haverford captain Peter Garosh was played through centrally and found himself one-on-one with Mike Salfraank, who came quickly off his line and smothered Garosh’s first time effort from 15 yards.

Montclair State was able to seize control of the game after about 15 minutes, using its speed and physicality to insti-

tute a high press and to continue to pin Haverford in its own half.

In the 18th minute, R. Terci slipped in his brother with a lovely weighted pass, but his shot went inches wide of the left post from about 12 yards.

A minute later, L. Terci was able to make up for his spurned chance, as Montclair State had earned a penalty kick when Matt Hendrickson was taken down in the box. Terci stepped up and slotted the ball hard and low to the right side, beating the

After Montclair State went up 2-0, they seemed a little complacent, perhaps thinking they would waltz to victory. After a physical, yet uneventful next 10 minutes, an errant backpass from substitute midfielder Brendan Guzman was picked up by Ryan Hill of Haverford at the top of the box, who took a touch and curled a brilliant finish into the side netting from Men’s Soccer continued on page 17
