PORCELAIN BUSTS

Roberto was born to Puerto Rican parents in 1961 just outside Philadelphia, and is no stranger to difficulties with substances and prison. He began his creative career as a graffiti artist. He is involved in social issues, holds conferences and helps to positively influence the lives of youth at risk. Lugo graduated in ceramics from the Kansas City Art Institute and now teaches at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture. He imprints his social message on his ceramics, seeing art as a response to social rehabilitation. His ceramics are traditional, vaguely Baroque, with classic painting that recalls the blues and whites of the Deflt style, with portraits of people of colour superimposed. The union of classic decoration and contemporary portraits exhibit his desire to establish an intimate relationship with differing foreign cultures. His work also narrates the need for racial integration.
