1. What made you get into the Beauty Industry? I got into the beauty industry because i was tired of buying products at counters based on the recommendation of someone that had no clue what works for my skin tone. When i was growing up there weren’t many options for women of color, especially those of us with deeper skin. I wanted to learn what products were right for me on my own. Once i became comfortable doing that for myself i wanted to empower others to do the same.
2. What has been your biggest obstacle to surpass? My biggest obstacle was deciding to break into the beauty industry. After college I planned on getting a job that would pay the bills. I never imagined I could actually enjoy what I do for a living. In the beginning there was so much uncertainty. Is this really what I want to do? How will I find clients and make money? Am I good enough to make it? All these questions pushed me to keep going and I’m so glad I did!
3. What advice do you have for people who may want to follow in your footsteps? Have passion for what you do. It is not as easy or as glamorous as it seems. There is a lot of hard work, long days, sleepless nights, criticism, etc. Without passion you will get burned out really fast. Always be willing to grow and learn. The beauty of this industry is that things are constantly changing. Don’t be afraid to try new things and occasionally break “the rules"
6. What are some of your Beauty Must Haves? Right now I am loving the Cane and Austin 2/5% facial peel. It keeps my skin clear and radiant. Also cleansing tools, I use the Clarisonic, is another must have because it deeply cleans your skin, 11x better
than your hands alone. Falsies are another beauty must have. They instantly give you a sultry and glamorous effect. Try on a pair or stack two together next time you have a big night out. My favorite are the Ardell Demi Wispies.
7. What Valentine Beauty Tips do you have for ladies? and gents? For the ladies, get dolled up but don’t overdo it. Your man fell in love with you for you, not because your highlight is on fleek. Enhance your features and wear a nude lipstick. I’ve been told guys hate bright colors because they end up on their face at the end of the night. For the gents, appreciate how much time and effort your woman put into getting ready. Open doors, pull out chairs, and give her lots of compliments.
8. Do you believe in Men rocking makeup on a daily basis? Why should they? or shouldn’t? Absolutely, makeup is for everyone! Thats like having a problem with women wearing pants. What you do with your face is no one else business.
9. Anything else that you would like to share with us? Anyone that is following their passion and working towards their goals, keep on going! Trust and believe that your vision will come true. Don’t let anyone else’s negativity bring you down. If you need any advice, inspiration, or want to collaborate visit anikakaibeauty.com to get in contact with me.

Independent • Loving • Analytical A few words to describe this talent
Alex Phoenix
These words do not only express who Alex Phoenix is as a person but also as an artist. When we heard this beauty singing live at a New York event we had to introduce ourselves and find out more about her. She has the entire package, sound, style, musicality. If you haven't heard her music yet, just remember to say thank you to us after you read this interview and check out her sound.
Jace: What genre do you consider the music you make? A:Alternative Neo-Funk Jace: Do you have a favorite genre of music you listen to on a regular basis? A: Itʼs hard for me to say that I have one favorite but my three favorites are Jazz, Soul/Blues and Alternative Music. Jace: If you had to choose one song to listen to the rest of your life what song would that be? why? A: Oh god, I am so indecisive so I'd have to give you two answers. I would have to go with Superstar by The Carpenters or 1979 by The Smashing Pumpkins. Both of them make me feel like I'm a rebellious teenager in the movie "The Breakfast Club". Every time I listen to those songs I play out different scenarios in my head. It's like watching a movie through your ears. Jace: Where were you born and raised? A: I was born in Nyack, NY and I guess you can say I was raised in Yonkers, NY. I traveled a lot as a child so it's hard for me to claim one place. Jace: Do you feel like where your from contributes to your song writing? A: Yes but I feel like high school contributed the most to my songwriting. I was home schooled from 6th-8th grade because I went from Broadway to doing two Broadway National Tours (Oprah Winfrey's "The Color Purple" and Disney's National Cheetah Tour "The Lion King") so I was traveling a lot. When I finally came off tour I went from homeschooling and being around adults everyday for years to being thrown back into society with people my age and experiencing what it was to be a "normal kid in high school". I experienced my first heartbreaks, friendships, mean girls, etc. Jace: On the toughest day, what keeps you going musically? A: Listening to my favorite artists that inspire me and watching their interviews about their creative process. You also just have to come to terms with the fact that youʼre not going to write a hit song everyday of your life. Youʼre actually going to write a lot of crappy ones to the point where you ask yourself “Am I even good at this?” but you just have to keep pushing and going forward and challenging yourself and sooner or later you find those 5 songs out of the 20 that are gold. Jace: Do you remember your best performance experience and why was it your best?
A: I recently had a show at “Bowery Electric” in the East Village. That felt like one of my best performances because I just felt so comfortable on stage. Singing perfect isnʼt what I consider my best show. I consider my best show being comfortable and connecting with the people who come out to see and as I keep performing Iʼm becoming more comfortable with being myself on stage. Jace: Have you ever been dismissed or felt your art was disrespected? If so how did you handle it? A: I was working on my first project and recording with my friends who engineered and produced in this studio in Brooklyn. During the recording process my engineer kept telling me to sing the song in a way that just wasn’t comfortable for me. After trying it a couple times he got frustrated and told me how I was singing was not what the song called for and that I needed to sing like another person if I wanted to sound good. I stopped the session, went home to find some inspiration and came back with a new approach. Jace: If you were to work with a well-known producer who would it be? Why? A: I would love to work with Kanye. His beats are just so transcending especially on his project 808’s and Heartbreak’s. If I could make an album like that I would in a heartbeat. Jace: Where do you see yourself in a year? A: I see myself touring and hopefully with hard work performing at an award show even If it’s just the pre stage. I would love to do Summer Jam next year or Coachella. I love outdoor festivals. Jace: What's the ultimate goal? A: The ultimate goal is to be a well-respected house hold name in this industry. I want to be iconic. One of my biggest role models right now is Lady Gaga. If I could have a career it would be like hers. She has a background in musical theatre and she found a balance between being a pop icon and still staying true to her roots in Broadway and she just doesn’t give a fuck. She is who she is and you’ve got to accept it. Jace: Where can people find your music? A: You can go to my soundcloud which is www.soundcloud.com/alex_phoenix and you can look up some of my videos on youtube: “All I Do” with Wreckroom Records and my feature on Powers Pleasant single off his first project (The Powers Pleasant Experience) called “Risk”. Jace: Anything else you wanted to let us know? A: Just keep your eyes and ears open for Alex Phoenix because you will be seeing and hearing a lot more about me in the coming years ;)

1. I love the fact that you are not placed in a box. If you had to choose a few words to describe your sound how would you describe it? I appreciate you guys for noticing that!! Thats always been the goal. I feel like my sound is just extremely relatable, motivational, transparent and God inspired for the most part. I hope I answered the question right. 2. The home base for us is Brooklyn so we love knowing you were born in Brooklyn, do you think it plays any part to your approach with your music? Not really to be honest. I moved upstate when I was 8, so I wasn’t at the appropriate age to understand the music that was around me while I was there in its entirety. I know around that time was the Golden era of hip-hop when Biggie, Jay-Z, Big L, and artist like that were super prevalent. Growing up I wasn’t even allowed to listen to rap music. My parents were really big on benevolence, positivity and religion so anything that didn’t reflect that was banned from the house. Lol So my influences actually came from living in the suburbs and getting into the culture of hip hop after I started college. 3. What are your goals ultimately in your career?
lived in an apartment with two other close friends and we had to choose between paying rent and the light bill, or pay for shows and studio time which ultimately resulted in our first eviction. Before that we were living with no lights for a little over a year and six months. It was pretty crazy. As of recent, history has repeated itself and we’re sleeping on studio floors and couches to get this music thing right. We were also just outstandingly negligent tenants so don’t feel bad for us. Haha. I’ve also been using my unemployment money to make the necessary moves to get to the next level. But God has been good regardless. 5. Are there any artist out right now that you would love to work with? If so who and why? I have a couple artist I would love to work with, or even sit in a session with and build with. Jay Electronica, Kendrick Lamar, Andre 3000, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, John Legend, Ceelo Green, the list goes on! These people have played a huge influence in the way I write and hear music. I would love to see how they create, their writing process, and just learn from them ultimately. I’m a student first and foremost. 6. Describe to us the process of creating Soon You'll Understand Vol. 1.
Honestly the goal has always been to spread a message of faith, hope, God, and positivity. I want people to hear the music and feel God the way I do when I’m writing those thoughts and lyrics down. I want people to realize that we are all royalty and its cool to be comfortable in the skin God has given us flaw and all you know? Like I’m perfectly fine with the fact that I wasn't getting ass in high school like the cool kids, I wasn’t the most popular and I wasn’t the most attractive guy, along with many other things but I own that shit and put it in the music because I know that I'm not the only one who’s ever felt like that, but most importantly I’m comfortable with being me. Even if the people don’t view me the way that God does. I’m fully aware of my worth and Ultimately I just want the world to be aware of theirs too. I can talk about this all day. Lol. Aside from that, I just want to be motivational, I want to be the voice, I want to change lives, I want to touch souls, and make a great living doing so, I want to be the 1, And I want to do it all while refraining from being anyone but me in the process
It was a really interesting process. My team and I have been paying homage to the early 2000 Roc-a-Fella era for a while now. The aesthetic of that time always stuck with me from the tall tees, to the 3x authentic jerseys and fitted with good patches. Those were great times for us and we create those times and that feeling as often as possible. In making Soon You’ll Understand, we picked 7 of the most pivotal songs to us that brought a certain feel out of us and we chose those beats to be recreated with my story on them and the reception has been amazing since then. I’m just paying homage to the culture.
4. What has been some adversities you have had to face thus far in your journey?
Honestly, I can’t picture myself being anything else but an artist or doing anything other than music. Later on in life maybe I’ll be a dad or something, but for now, I can’t see anything past music.
Oh man, Where do I start? Lol. Me and my manager have been homeless, jobless, hungry. You name it, we’ve been through it. There was a point where we
7. Aside from music, who is "Oswin Benjamin?” Oswin Benjamin is just a genuine person trying to find different ways to better himself and the people around him. I’m just a human being trying to figure this life shit out. 8. If you weren't an artist, what would you do?
9. What do you think is a hinderance to a lot of new artist coming into the industry? In your opinion what are some of those stumbling blocks? The biggest hindrance to most new artist (that I feel), is they lack a sense of self. A lot of newer artist don’t trust their own ideas or believe that their story is good enough or dramatic enough to be told without embellishment. I know because I was there too. I didn’t think that anyone wanted to hear my story because the closest I've ever been to prison was a fucking parking ticket. I was never on the block, shit, my mom didn’t let me cross the street alone until I was like 13 you know? And I’ve seen a lot of artist create a facade and sell such a fraudulent life style to a predominantly naive and desensitized demographic. Artist are replicating bars and cadences in attempts to be the next carbon copy of the bullshit already in circulation. If you really fuck “bad bitches” and move weight by the boat load then I would never downplay your reality. BUT, if you’re in school struggling to find a major, or you’re in place where your parents don’t understand your passion, or bills are piling up to the point where you don’t know where your next meal is coming from, matter of fact scratch all that struggle shit. If you’re in a place where life is good, you’re in love, your in tuned with God and doors are opening for you, then write about those things. Shed light on YOUR reality. Let your art be a reflection of you, not what you think is going to sell. OK I’m done Preaching. Lol 10. What is next on the agenda for you? Any new projects in the works? Hopefully if all goes well, Soon You’ll Understand Volume. 2 will be releasing very soon. No pun intended. Lol. And the EP “Protect Ya Soul” will be dropping this year as well as some dope visuals for the singles. I’m really excited for that. You guys are awesome!!! Thank you for allowing me to ramble with such freedom. Lol Twitter: @oswinbmusic Instagram: @oswinbenjamin Soundcloud: www.soundcloud.com/oswinbenjamin Facebook: Oswin Benjamin

Step by step: I found this in a baking book, thought I should share it for a nice change on Valentines Day. A sweet for your sweet you can make with your own hands and it始s simple to do. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Place 12 paper cake cases in a muffin pan. Place the superfine sugar and butter in a bowl and cream together until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs. Stir in the milk, lavender and vanilla extract, then carefully fold in the flour. Divide the mixture between the paper cases and bake in the oven for 12 - 15 minutes, or until well risen and golden. The sponge should bounce back when pressed. A few minutes before the cakes are ready, sift the confectioners始 sugar into a bowl and stir in enough water to make a thick frosting. When the cakes are baked, transfer to a wire rack and place a blob of frosting in the center of each one, allowing it to run across the cake. Decorate with lavender flowers and silver dragees and serve as soon as the cakes are cool.

SAMANTHA COBOS
I knew when I first met Samantha Melanie Cobos, I knew that she would be a force to be reckoned with in the world of Fashion. I knew in my mind, it wasn't a matter of "if" she would be discovered but WHEN. Some would ask "why so sure?" The answer is simple; "she is an original in the myths of people who "think" they are "originals". From her personal aesthetic to her design aesthetic it's all authentically Samantha. She wants to be known for her street wear styles,I promise she will be. Street wear is not just simply T-shirts with quotes used a thousand times or childhood cartoons that we loved and enjoyed as a kids that have been turned into offensive meanings, and hats
with logos me and you could have doodled while bored taking a test. Samantha is here to bring a new wave of street wear. Her designs force you to not only look at the colors or accessories but the structure and fit of the clothing. Don't take my word for it ask Aya Kanai Fashion Director for Seventeen and Cosmopolitan Magazine who said and I quote on the Project Runway Juniors ."We know that this designer has a big future ahead of us in this competition". Samantha is so busy being a Senior in High School and being a strong contestant on Project Runway Juniors that she did not have time to meet up with her dear old classmate but she did want

FASHIONSPOTLIGHT
“I am my own muse when it comes to designing, and everything I make is 100% my personal style -Samantha Cobos
1. If you could describe to me who you are in three words, what would they be? optimistic, ambitious, independent 2. What is your aesthetic as a designer? My design aesthetic as a designer is Streetwear, inspired by menswear, doesn't matter which gender I'm designing for! Nowadays, there's a lot of upcoming designers who are typically specializing in womenswear, which I respect, however, not only do I want to stand out from the rest as a designer, but I'm not much of a girly girl.
4. When did you fall in love with fashion, particularly design? When I was little, I used to watch "That's So Raven" and there was a particular episode where the character Raven was designing, while at her fashion internship for "Donna Gabana" I remember watching this episode and thinking to myself "I would love to design/create clothes one day" Just the concept of someone coming up with new designs every now and then for people to wear, amazed/inspired me. 5. Who are some people you look up to in the Fashion Industry? Juun J, Stella Ishii and Paula Gerbase, Alexander Wang, basically any designer who is inspired by menswear, and that whole androgynous look.
6. How did the opportunity to become a contestant on Project Runway Junior arise? The producers contacted the school asking for their top fashion major designers from the age of 13-17 who would like to audition for the new 3. Does your personal aesthetic match your spin off of Project Runway called Project designers aesthetic? Runway Junior. At the time, my teacher was Yes! In fact, the whole reason why I wanted to Ms.David and I was nervous at first, but she start making clothes was because I wanted to pushed me and encouraged me to not only create pieces that I personally would wear. I am represent fashion industries, but to try my own muse when it comes to designing, and something new and show off my modern style. everything I make is 100% my personal style Without her, I wouldn't have auditioned for the that I want to share with others! show on my own. Very grateful for her!

off the bat that this is Samantha's look" which was amazing feedback to receive. 9. The cast this season seems to be pretty tight knit , who would you say you have grown the closest to this far? All of the contestants are so sweet and funny, I love them! But I would have to say that the one that I related to or bonded with the most were Ysabel, Matt and Jesse.
7. How did it feel to win the first challenge? Winning the first challenge was not only such a relief, but also a wake up. At the beginning of the first challenge I got anxiety due to how fast everything was happening and the cameras, and I had began to feel as if I got myself into something that is 100% out of my comfort zone, which caused the anxiety. However, I decided to go with my gut with my design and the judges loved it. Winning the first challenge showed me that as long as you go with your gut, and NOT get influenced by your other designer and just being yourself, you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. I felt as if I actually belonged on the show and my confidence began to shine through. 8. Watching the show , you seem to be one of your judges favorite, would you agree? I can agree that I was beginning to be one of the judges favorites. Don't get me wrong, the other contestants are amazingly talented, however, I feel as if I was bringing something new to the table and the judges recognized that whenever they saw my pieces walking down the runway. They would always mention "We could tell right
10. How has this experience changed the people around you? Most importantly how has it changed you ? People began to finally realize that I want to be known as someone who wants to bring out more menswear inspired looks and bring something new to the table. Before this, everyone used to think that I specialize in dresses. Dresses are nice and all, but there are so many designers who do that already! So it was nice knowing that my design aesthetic was finally clear to everyone else. This experience has changed me in a way that it showed me how much you have to be yourself if you really want to stand out from the rest and make an impact by bringing something new to the table. It also made me more confident with myself in a way that I can finally feel comfortable taking risks when it comes to designing designing. I can finally be myself, without caring if someone is judging me! 11. What advice would you give to young designers such as yourself? Take risks, think outside of the box and go with your gut! Try not to be influenced too much by other designers, try to be as original as possible and come up with your own unique designs! 12. How do your parents feel when they see their child on television? My mom gets so happy and proud whenever she sees an episode or a commercial for the show. It has gotten to the point where she even watches the episodes over and over online, after watching it every Thursday. She has such unconditional love for me and I appreciate her so much for encouraging me to be myself and try something new.

n the news the other day, like quite a few news programs lately there have been quite a few stories about women being attacked. Females of all ages are being attacked of late. I know this is for lack of a better term, nothing new. It just seems to me that there is a flood of individuals let loose upon our neighborhoods, who are lacking in morals, self control and may just be mentally indifferent toward woman. Weather it be a a chemical imbalance naturally or, the chemicals they choose to self medicate these individuals are a societal stalkers and they pray on women. On Thursday, September 3, 2015 abc.3 news reported that a group of men save a woman being attacked with a flashlight by her husband, in Oklahoma because she wanted something to eat. He faces domestic violence charges the husband is a former deputy. fifty-six year old Douglas Beckham refused to stop to buy his wife something to eat. She had several lacerations to her legs. “We donʼt advocate to the level that it went”, Oklahoma City police Captain, Paco Balderrama said, “Call the police, let us handle it”... Closer to home, while exiting the train station in Brooklyn, there was a poster that called for a community meeting regarding the placement of fifty (50) sex offenders in the nearby shelter which is run by the Doe Foundation. An area that is residential, an area with at least three schools within walking distance of the shelter. In addition, the local police department are going door to door passing out fliers prompting residence to lock their doors due to the increase in brake ins in the neighborhood.
You are your sisters keeper, take care of yourself and each other!

The decision makers are clearly not taking the people of this neighborhood into consideration. Are they dispersible? Are they the preverbal mice that are fed to the snakes. Milwaukee - a woman was beaten violently by two people outside a gas station, while others watch and film but do nothing. “To see that actually all go down made me feel sorry. This is a human issue.” said community activist, Tony Lowe. Lafayette - police, arrested 33 year old Jerome McCray of Marion, after receiving a report that he had slipped into a womanʼs home. “Sucker punched her and held her captive over night.” Brooklyn- Three men caught on video attacking woman, on October 20, 2014. This incident took place at 2:30am on Franklin Avenue near Prospect Place in Crown Heights. “They just rushed me, so the first thing I thought of - is this really happening?” She said, victim - Gwendolyn Reyes, 21 no arrest have been made since this research was done. NYPD has released new video showing suspects in a vicious attack that left a transgender woman who is now fighting for her life in Bushwick, Brooklyn, Wednesday, October 15, 2014. So many people are more interested in getting footage for social media than the crimes against the woman around them which is running rampant through social media. A woman being dragged by a car, gets so much attention than the crime itself. a young woman being beaten up gets more attention than the crime itself. Is this where we have come to. Getting hits on social media is more important than getting help for a victim. According to the US Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics, Female Victims of Violence, in 2008, female age 12 or older experienced about 552,000 non fatal violent victimizations (rape/sexual assault, robbery, or aggravated or simple assault) by an intimate partner. About 1 in 100 of all victims were stalked by a stranger, and nearly 3 in 4 of all victims knew their offender in some capacity. Ladies, learn to defend yourself. Do not travel alone if you can help it. Do not be afraid to report abuse perpetuated against you by anyone. Be alert, be aware of what is going on around you. Our authorities are focused on the bigger happenings in the world. Take care of yourself and each other.

THE
HUMAN
LieDETECTOR By Charity Barksdale
First and foremost I want to apologize to all the sweet Men out there in advance. Please, believe me when I say I'm not declaring war on you all, ladies welcome to the first of my many segments. The time of detective work hiding in the shadows while in an unmarked car, coercing your best friend to go on Co-op top secret mission days are over. Not that those days aren't entertaining, but it is time to evolve I'm going to share my trade secrets that have allowed me to uncover the sticky truth. If you care to take this journey know and understand this is your choice, and if you do choose to continue reading you are opening a door that can allow you to finally see the world for what it is. Whether it be a happy one or upsetting venture these are merely tips to assist you with what you may very well already know. This is the olive branch you've been waiting for and ignorance is bliss but, this is Pandora box. Naturally woman have an instinct, an intuitive nature by right to uncover the truth that lies ahead. Should you end friendship, family ties or marriages for the truth you seek and may likely get the answer to? The answer is no, but you have the tools to allow you to get some of the answers you seek. Let's start off with something easy, unlike the language of love, liars too have a language of www.interestingtopics.net their own. For example how many times has your significant other or child forgotten to do something and they repeat their question back or respond with the emphasis "huh" or "uh"? I'm sure that 80% if not all would raise their hand. Liars have a tendency to repeat the question verbatim. For example "Have you ever cheated on me?" response, "What do you mean have I ever cheated on you?", Repeating a question in full is a common stalling tactic used by people looking for an extra moment to prepare their deceptive reply. In natural conversation, people will sometimes repeat part of a question, but restating the entire question is highly awkward and unnecessary—they clearly heard you the first time.Theres always the benefit of the doubt but this is a likely lying gesture. You can test this theory if you like. Ask a person you wish to seek the truth from to do you a favor that they are most likely going to forget to do. I’m interested to see how this exercise with your person of choosing goes. It'll work for some, possibly not for all but tell me your not curious? "The most difficult thing to get people to do is accept the obvious" -Dick Gregory
