PROJECT PORTFOLIO

Project Portfolio Mercury Marine

Automation Solutions of America was contracted to provide this V-6 and V-8 Engine Assembly System to a prominent engine manufacturer. The need for a system like this was a result of the customer’s desire to bring the manufacture of these engines back into their facility, rather than purchasing the assembled engine from outside sources. Because the production was mostly manual and semi-automatic assembly, the project presented some unique challenges. The conveyance system height was to be no more than 8.5” above the floor, and needed to have decking for walkaround access to all sides of the transport pallet. ASA worked on the conveyor system design with our conveyor partner to achieve this goal, as a standard conveyor product was not available on the market at the time. The transport pallet was also required to have the ability to manipulate the engine to multiple positions. The engine can be raised up or down depending on operator height, rolled about the horizontal axis for assembly access to the top and bottom of the engine, and the pallet can also rotate around the vertical axis so both sides of the engine could be presented to the assembly automation on the outside of the line. The system was provided with a rail-guided vehicle to allow fork truck access to the inside of the conveyor system for line-side material delivery. ASA designed, built, and tested the system at our Beloit, WI facility, and installed it at the customer’s facility while providing start-up production support after factory acceptance. Services Provided: • Project Management

• Mechanical Design

• Controls Design

• Controls Programming

• System Build and Debug

• Turnkey Installation

Project Facts: 3 This manufacturing system is a “one of a kind” in the world of engine assembly manufacturing. 15

PROJECT PORTFOLIO

Project Portfolio Elgin Community College

Morse Electric Inc. (a Morse Group subsidiary) installed a 12.47kV underground, Smart Grid, distribution system for Elgin Community College. This followed a separately bid and awarded engineering contract by another Morse Group company, Industrial Electrical Engineers, Inc., for the same project. These two contracts follow a number of other successful projects with ECC and demonstrate a strong partnership with the college that began in 2000. The combined effort of the design/engineering project and now the construction of that project are made possible by The Morse Group’s collective experience and knowledge. The new Smart Grid system at Elgin Community College will utilize state-of-the-art technologies to improve reliability of the campus’ electrical distribution system. This will be accomplished by creating automated, self-healing zones that allow electricity to be automatically dispatched within the distribution system from multiple utility sources in the event of a utility outage or a faulted underground cable. The Smart Grid system is monitored in real time with automated notices delivered electronically to campus maintenance staff alerting them to system anomalies. Data collected by the smart grid system will also allow the college to better understand its energy use profile; thereby providing opportunities for the college to manage and direct its energy costs more closely. As the college grows in size and enrollment in the coming years and electrical demand with it, the new Smart Grid system will be scalable; easily adjusting to the task of extending its inherent reliability and monitoring capabilities to expanded building loads. ECC’s new Smart Grid distribution system provides the college with a long-term ability to achieve its goal of extending enrollment opportunities to an ever-increasing student population base within its community. Services Provided: • Electrical Engineering

• Equipment Specification

• Site Power Distribution & Design

• Emergency Generation

• Low Voltage Systems

• Power Distribution & Lighting

• Testing & Verification 16

PROJECT PORTFOLIO

Project Portfolio Nippon Sharyo

Nippon Sharyo is expanding its nearly 500,000 square feet of space with an additional 330,000 square foot expansion in Rochelle, Illinois and contracted The Morse Group for its electrical needs. In the new facility, major parts and components for the car body will be manufactured using U.S.-made raw material. Continuous lean production process from raw material to the complete car body under the strict production and quality control is expected to lower the overall cost. The $54 million expansion was generated from recent contracts from Metra for new cars for its commuter service, and a Federal Railroad Administration deal to build 130 cars for use on 110-mph service on Metra in the Midwest and in California. Nippon Sharyo manufactures components for the commuter and high-speed passenger rail cars, Chicagoland’s Metra commuter rail network, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the Illinois Department of Transportation. The company is also making passenger rail cars for the states of Missouri and Michigan. Services Provided: • Power Distribution
